ADMINISTRATIVE FELLOWS FOR RESEARCH The College of Science and Mathematics is looking to add two new administrative fellow positions that are being created to assist with the strategic operations of the College. The administrative fellow positions will be part-time administrative appointments with a 20% administrative assignment compensated with a one course release (3-hr) per semester (two total on the academic year), and $5000 of summer salary. For a faculty member starting on a 3/3 teaching load, the assignment would be 20% admin, 30% research, 40% teaching, and 10% service. The positions will start immediately as renewable one-year appointments, based on mutual interest and available funding.

The two administrative fellows have unique assignments where they will work with the COSM leadership, academic departments, and faculty to address strategic priorities as well as manage specific aspects of the College operations. These positions are open to all faculty, and the ideal candidate is someone seeking the opportunity to gain administrative insight and experience. The table below provides more details of the work assignment for the two position.

All interested faculty should discuss the opportunity with their department chair to determine potential modifications of teaching assignments for the spring and any potential impact of this assignment on upcoming promotion, tenure and/or post-tenure reviews.

NEW ENDOWED SCHOLARSHIP IN SEES It is with great pleasure that we announce a new endowed scholarship for Geography students in SEES! The Derek and Donna Alderman Family Endowed Scholarship is a $1,000 award with the following purpose and eligibility criteria: Purpose. The Donor’s first preference is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geoscience with a concentration in Human Geography. The second preference is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geoscience with a concentration in any area of Geography. The third preference is to provide scholarships to students pursuing a Master of Science in Applied Geography. The fourth preference is to provide scholarships to students minoring in Geography. The fifth preference is to provide scholarships to students taking geography courses.

Criteria. The recipient(s) may be freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, or graduate level students and must have and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. The scholarship may be awarded as a renewable scholarship and may be valid for 8 terms/4 years. The scholarship will be awarded by a committee consisting of the Office of Admissions and the College of Science and Mathematics in consultation with the Foundation.

Finally, although this is a new endowed scholarship we did have a recipient this academic year! MSAG student, Oluwaseun Ipede, received the award so be sure to congratulate Oluwaseun.

Dr. Derek Alderman is a 1990 graduate of Georgia Southern with a BA in History and Minor in Geography. He is currently a Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Geography and Sustainability at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with specialties in cultural and historical geography; geographies of memory, race, tourism; politics of place naming and critical cartography. Scholarships are generally advertised by the Foundation and open for applications October through the end of January. Scholarship applicants are reviewed and awards made usually by the end of February.

THE MCNAIR SCHOLARS PROGRAM The McNair Scholars Program (available on the Statesboro and Armstrong campuses) is expanding and soliciting potential scholars who are first generation and/or underrepresented in their graduate programs, with a preference given to STEM students. Students must be sophomores, juniors or nongraduating seniors (graduating May 2025, Summer 2025 or December of 2025). One of the goals of the McNair Scholars program is to make sure that participants are interested in pursuing graduate education and earning a Ph.D/Ed.D. The McNair Program is not open to students pursuing professional degrees (e.g., veterinary, medical or law degrees).

Faculty who have current, or potential undergraduate research students meeting this criteria should contact Ana Nuñez (an09815@georgiasouthern.edu). A few highlights about the program are below: Benefits of joining McNair: Faculty mentors are on hand to help students formulate research interests, develop research skills, and prepare for doctoral study Individualized assistance to help students address academic needs and enhance efforts to gain admission into graduate programs Scholars will have cutting edge research experiences Scholars will travel to national symposiums and conferences to present Summer incentives: Extensive work with a faculty mentor A stipend will be paid to the scholar Faculty who serve as mentors also receive a $1,500 stipend during the summer research experience.

EAGLEMED MCAT PREP COURSE As part of the EagleMed program, we are offering 18 free Blueprint MCAT Prep Courses which include 40 hours of live instruction (value ~$2000/course).

If you have students who are Juniors, Seniors, or Post-bac and planning to take the MCAT in 2025, please encourage them to apply.

Eligibility requires an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher, proof of taking the Blueprint diagnostic test, and completing the other questions on the application by October 11th.

CCRL UPDATES The COSM Core Research Laboratory (CCRL) appointment system has been updated. If you have an old link saved, it may no longer work. To book an appointment, visit the CCRL webpage and select the instrument you wish to use. This will take you to the appointments page (see photo one). After choosing your desired time slot, a confirmation screen will appear (see photo two). Enter your details to secure your booking, which will automatically add the appointment to your Google Calendar. You can also check the instrument status on the CCRL website. WHAT’S HAPPENING IN COSM!?

Last week, Dr. John Allen, a 2007 alumnus, gave a talk to pre-med students in the EagleMed program on the Statesboro Campus.

Dr. John Allen is a general and bariatric surgeon with East Georgia Medical and Surgical Associates and Cedar Surgical Associates. He is a board-certified surgeon by the American Board of Surgery and a member of the medical staff at East Georgia Regional Medical Center, having joined both the medical group and the hospital in late August.

Dr. Allen completed his fellowship in advanced gastroenterology, minimally invasive, and bariatric surgery at the University of South Carolina in Greenville, SC, and his general surgery residency at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah. He earned his medical degree from Mercer University School of Medicine in Savannah and graduated magna cum laude from Georgia Southern University in Statesboro.

Gather & Grow - John Abbot, The Naturalist

Thursday, September 26, 2024 5:30 PM- 6:30 PM John Abbot was a renowned naturalist who produced exquisite watercolors of Georgia's flora and fauna. His work, which predates John James Audubon's, is now prized worldwide. Abbot documented the region's butterfly and moth faunas and their interactions with native plants. Two species of moths, Oiketicus abbotii and Sphecodina abbottii, bear his name in recognition of his contributions.
