Innovative Teaching - Issue 27

The College of Science and Mathematics seeks proposals for innovative and collaborative approaches for offering lecture and/or laboratory courses across multiple campuses and multiple modes of delivery. With a particular focus on developing approaches that provide engaged, active learning student learning strategies, COSM will provide financial support for faculty teams to develop new strategies (new to the department or course). Of particular interest are approaches that improve upon the site-sync model of teaching courses across multiple campuses. Examples could include:

  • Team teaching a course on two campuses where the lecture is shared between multiple faculty members, but the labs are taught by a single faculty member on a specific campus. For example, BIOL Biomedical Science would be offered with a single lecture course via hybrid or site-sync, but lab sections are offered F2F on each campus.

  • Redesign of an existing course(s) where the newly designed course can be taught more efficiently across campuses. Such as, a team works to create a new course that will replace CHEM XXXX Synthetic Organic Chemistry taught on the Statesboro campus and CHEM XXXX Synthetic Medicinal Chemistry that is taught on the Armstrong campus with a new course that will be offered on both campuses.

  • An example of a newly designed course includes an online synchronous lecture with F2F laboratory courses on each campus.

To support these projects, faculty should propose a course and provide justification for associated costs, such as necessary equipment and supply purchases required for delivery of the revised or new course. For team-taught lecture/lab courses, faculty should outline how lecture material will be co-delivered and coordination of lab material and activities. Incentives may include stipends of up to $1,000. Additionally, team taught courses may be allowed to double count load for a limited time (each person counting the course as a full load).
