UPDATES FROM THE DEAN

Aswemaketheruntowardstheendofthesemester,Iwanttotakeafewminutestothankeveryoneforagreat year.Ithasbeenanotherchallengingyear,butwe’veaccomplishedalotinthepast9months.Belowareafew ofthehighlightswithsomeadditionalannouncements.

We’ve worked to strengthen shared governance in COSM via strengthening the Faculty Governance Committee and the Undergraduate Research Committee as well as establishing a new Faculty Research Council.Inaddition,weappointedtwofacultyfellowstoassistusintwoimportantareas-studentsuccess andundergraduateresearch.

TheDepartmentofBiochemistry,ChemistryandPhysics(BCP)hasreceivedapprovaltolaunchtheCenter forAdvancedMaterialsResearchstartingonJuly1.Thisisanessentialpartofthegrowthtowardstartinga PhDprograminMaterialScience.

Twonewdegreeprogramproposalshavebeensubmitted:

An interdisciplinary team from Biology and Biochemistry, Chemistry, & Physics developed the proposal fortheBSBiomedicalSciencesdegreeprogramledbyRobMansandBrianKoehler.

AteamfromBCPhavedevelopedtheproposalforthePhDprograminMaterialScienceledbyWillLynch andothers.

BrentFeskehasledtheeffortstodeploytheresourcesassociatedwiththegrantconsultantsfromHanover Research. This two-year contract will provide professional development and grant proposal reviews for facultypursuingexternalfunding.

COSM dominated the Georgia Southern Student Scholars Symposium (GS4) - we had by far the most presentersonbothcampuses!!

We launched the search for the inaugural director of the Center for Biomedical Research and Innovation (which technically does not currently exist). The director’s first task will be to establish this center as a hub forinterdisciplinaryresearchinthebiomedicalsciencesincludingcollaborationswiththeregionalmedical schools,hospitals,andotherexternalpartners.

Mitch Weiland is ready to launch the Eagle Med: the Future Doctoral Mentoring Academy with the goal of enhancing our efforts to prepare students for admission into medical, dental, veterinary, and other medicallyrelateddoctoralprograms.

TheMathDepartmentisworkinghardindevelopingplansforthefallvisitofDr.RobertSantos,Directorofthe U.S.CensusBureau.

SEES and Biology completed comprehensive program reviews for BS Geosciences and MS Biology, respectively,withoverallextremelypositiveresults.

Therearemultipleconstructionorrenovationprojectseitherunderwayorintheplanningstagesthataffect COSMbuildings-HVACfor2ndFloorofHertyBldg.andtheScienceCenter,labrenovationsfortheScience Center, Natural Sciences remodel and renovation, and lab renovations for COSM faculty in the Savannah ResearchComplex.

IcouldeasilygoonandonabouttheaccomplishmentsofCOSMfaculty,staff,andstudentsduringthe20232024academicyear.Thankyouforallyourhardworkandeffortinprovidingourstudentswiththebestpossible educationalexperiencesandcongratulationsforeverythingyouhaveaccomplishedthisyear!

As a reminder, the College of Science and Mathematics has contracted with Hanover Research, a grantdevelopmentfirmheadquarteredinArlington,VA,toprovidegrantconsultantservicestoCOSM faculty

Through their review process, Hanover grant consultants provide key insights into funding priorities and recommendations for improvement, increasing the competitiveness of grant proposals to federalagenciesandtoprivateandnon-profitfoundations

OurcontractprovidesaccesstotheHanoverHigherEducationGrantsQueue.Inthisprogram,weare provided access to the portfolio of available consulting services in a “linear” queue – meaning only one project is being worked on at a time. Using this queue, it will be essential that faculty have continual conversations with the Dean’s Office, specifically Dr. Brent Feske, Associate Dean for Research as Brent manages the COSM queue. If you have any upcoming grants submittals being planned,pleasecompletethefollowingGoogleFormwhichprovidesthekeyinformationtostartthe discussions.
