Dear Gold Award Girl Scouts, There has never been a more remarkable way to exemplify the Girl Scout Law than by reaching the highest level of achievement in our Movement, the Girl Scout Gold Award. As a Gold Award Girl Scout, you have met, and in many ways exceeded, benchmarks for leadership, education, sustainability, and a connection to a global issue with your project.

At the start of your journey, you looked to your community with care and compassion and did not shy away from the challenges you saw there, even during the height of a global pandemic. While the world went virtual, you pivoted, making every effort to keep people safe without missing a beat.

From the moment you submitted your project proposal, you set an example in dedication, perseverance, and commitment to making the world a better place.

As you accept your Gold Award pin today, take deep pride in knowing the time, care, and effort it took to get here. Reflect on the obstacles you overcame, and the lasting impact your work will make. Celebrate among the family, friends, mentors and Girl Scout sisters who supported you along the way. Most importantly, continue on the path of leadership and service to your community. About the Girl Scout Gold Award Earning the Gold Award is a Girl Scout’s highest honor.

This prestigious award is earned by a select group of Girl Scouts who demonstrate a higher commitment to improving their communities and advocating for lasting change. Since January of 2020, 16 Girl Scouts from across the Delmarva Peninsula earned the Gold Award.

The road to the Gold Award begins with discovery.

Each girl uses her own values and skills to identify a community issue she is passionate about and then determines the topic and audience for her project. While working on her project, each Girl Scout dedicates herself to advancing her cause and accomplishing her goal.

All of the projects celebrated today will have a lasting and positive impact on our region and beyond. These Gold Award Girl Scouts have exhibited outstanding leadership, exceptional organizational skills and a sincere commitment to investing in their communities. Congratulations to all of our Gold Award Girl Scouts!

Class of 2021 Gold Award Girl Scouts Sarah Bock

Wilmington, DE • Educate! Don’t Domesticate!

Sarah focused on education around the wrongful purchase and illegal obtaining of exotic animals. She created brochures to be handed out at the Three Palms Zoo and Educational Center, helped repair and rebuild the Pelican House, and updated animal pen signs for visitors to gain more knowledge about the issue.

Sara Chapple

Cordova, MD • The Traveling Dragonfly Mosaic: Drugs and Alcohol Education Program The dragonfly is a symbol of positive change, and it inspired Sara to spread awareness about drug and alcohol addiction. The mosaic taught others about the struggles of addiction through artwork. Sara also set up a Reflection Nook at the Gratitude House with tools for residents to continue their journey with journals and self-help books.

Hockessin, DE • Environmental Education and Enhancement Annabelle educated her community about the quality of Delaware’s waterways, specifically the degredation of stream habitats. She created a mobile library with 15 signs that described the importance of native plants, and their effort to help erosion. They were placed in areas with signs of erosion or with nearby native plants. In addition, Annabelle planted new plants at sites prone to erosion.

White Amanda Dolle

Easton, MD • Autism Awareness Amanda addressed the issue of disability rights and raising awareness for detection of autism in girls. She met virtually with parents and teens to discuss autism, made a brochure with resources and created a video to be shared on Kinera Foundation’s page.

Krista Janaye Douglas

Salisbury, MD • Teaching English Through Technology Janaye updated the computer software program at Salisbury Christian School to encourage self-paced instruction and increased access for students with differentiated learning levels during third grade English Language Arts lessons. required around logo

Hailey Flory

Cape Charles, VA • Bags of Love Hailey wanted to take action when she found out that foster children often didn’t have proper bags or items to take to their new homes. She created 20 decorated duffle bags filled with security, comfort, and hygiene items for children in the foster care system.

White CyNai’ Jaynes

New Castle, DE • Stop the Spread CyNai’ was dedicated to teaching youth and their families how to prepare and stay safe during a pandemic. She created a Facebook page, taught classes to other Girl Scouts about sanitary practices, put together mask kits and a network to find people who needed additional resources like PPE during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Madison Johnson

Selbyville, DE • Blankets of Love Madison helped children enduring extended hospital stays with their anxiety by making comfort blankets. She delivered 55 blankets to local organizations.

Morgan LoCurcio

Newark, DE • Youth Environmental Education Trail Morgan noticed a lack of children’s environmental education in her area, specifically regarding local insects and how they impact our environment. She worked with Ashland Nature Center and local children to build bug “huts” that they could use in their backyards.

She also created 2 other bug “huts”, for bees and butterflies, that were placed around Ashland Nature Center.

Rebecca Merkel

Stevensville, MD • Rain Barrels for Water Collection and Stormwater Control Rebecca took action to address water conservation in Queen Anne’s County, along with flooding and erosion prevention, by creating rain barrels. She also replaced the water-logged sign at the local library with information about water run off. required around logo

Marguerite Mitchell

Rehoboth Beach, DE • Peer to Peer Mentoring Project Marguerite helped freshman at her high school get acclimated to their new surroundings by starting a peer group where students could get tips and advice about managing stress and anxiety.

Caitlin White Price

Centreville, MD • Partnering for Volunteers Caitlin worked with Partnering for Youth to ensure all children in Queen Anne’s County had access to well-staffed, high quality, affordable and educational after-school activities. Caitlin facilitated a campaign at her school to help recruit her peers to volunteer, increasing the programs ability to serve more children and lessening the workload on school staff.

Teresa Ryan

Wilmington, DE • Formal Dress Drive Teresa helped meet the needs of her peers who could not afford formal wear for high school dance’s by coordinated and hosted the first of a new annual school event providing students with gently used dresses.

Savanna Sykes

Millsboro, DE • Agricultural Education Savanna sought to increase the amount of students interested in pursuing careers in agriculture after high school by coordinating and hosting a career fair with over 11 stations showcasing agricultural fields. She also created a social media page to spread the word and promote her event.

Daniele Thomas

Middletown, DE • Fire Prevention and Awareness Daniele educated families in her community on house fire prevention and how to evacuate a residence safely, with all family and pets, in the event of a fire. She held fire safety events and created emergency bags with hygiene and care items for the fire department to distribute to families affected by a fire emergency.

Madison Washington

Newark, DE • Internal Happiness Madison addressed the issues of maintaining good mental health among her peers. She helped students at her high school find an outlet through art. The paintings created were hung in the bathrooms at the school to provide positivity and inspiration to students throughout the day.
