Heather Hughes didn’t set out to change the world. In 2011, she helped start a Girl Scout troop at Rio del Mar Elementary School for a group of 5-, 6- and 7year-old girls. Her volunteer efforts over the next 13 years brought an unexpected positive impact to the community.
In the early years, the troop collected teddy bears for children in need, assembled and distributed kits with socks and toothbrushes for people experiencing homelessness, and shared Thanksgiving meals together. When the girls reached sixth grade, Carol-Anne Byck joined Hughes, and the two women shared leadership responsibilities. Read the full article online here.

The BRAVE curriculum teaches kids that it’s normal to feel anxious about telling an adult about abuse. We explain what happens after a disclosure and share strategies to manage those fears. Being brave doesn’t mean having no fear — it means facing hard or unknown situations even while feeling afraid.

My Girl Scout journey began when I was in second grade, the first year that you could be a brownie then. There were no daisies. I stayed in Girl Scouts until after I received my First Class Award. During that time, I was a PA for our local day camp in Livermore, CA. When my daughter, Casey, was in first grade, in 1994, she joined a brownie troop. I did not know about Daisies, or she would have joined in kindergarten. By her second-grade year I was a co-leader for her troop. I remained as one of her leaders until after she received her Gold Award in 2005. I was lucky to have many other parents that helped with our troop.
I was service unit manager for several years; went on a Wider Op with a group of Girl Scouts to the British Isles; organized the council cookie rally one year; assisted my troop with their Silver Award and two girls with their Gold Awards; and worked at Henry Cowell Day Camp every summer.
My daughter started day camp in 1995. I started as a unit leader in 1996 and have been going ever since. In 2006 I became a co-Director and continue to be a director now in 2026. We skipped camp from 2020 to 2022 because of COVID but started back strong in 2023. Our camp is set in the beautiful redwoods of Henry Cowell State Park. We usually have about 200 campers in grades 1-7, 50+ PAs and close to 50 adults. The girls are divided into units. Each unit has around 20 girls, 3-4 PAs, and 2-3 leaders. We have crafts, songs, hiking, creek-walking, cooking, and much more. The camp is the last full week in June from 9:00-3:30. On Thursday, the older girls stay until 9:00 PM. Before COVID, they would spend the night and enjoy a evening stargazing!
I am most proud about how our Program Aids become strong leaders at camp. They take their responsibilities very seriously and every year amaze me with their competency. I am proud that they return to camp every year, even after they become adults. This year I have 16 adults working at camp that are past PAs. Right now, our camp roster is complete. We can use volunteers for helping with the Thursday night dinner and the Friday lunch. Everyone that helps must have a current Food Handlers permit. You can email me at hcgsdaycamp@gmail.com if you would like to help. For next year’s camp, we will need unit leaders and possibly other positions. Too early to tell for 2027. Please check our website https://www.henrycowellgscamp.org for more information.
I keep thinking that I will retire from this position but somehow, I keep going. Now my granddaughter attends camp as a PeeWee, so who knows how long I will continue!

For Service Units, approved accounts created through the council-issued signup link also receive council-covered credit card processing fees. Questions? Contact info@girlscoutsccc.org for assistance or to request the Service Unit signup link.
Cheddar Up – A flexible, council-approved option that allows Service Units to manage event registration, customize questions, and control fund transfers.

Congratulations to Jade Yakel on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouting, with her impactful project, Sick Box Survival Kits!
Recognizing that many students leave home for college without the knowledge or supplies needed to care for common illnesses, Jade developed a project focused on improving health literacy and preparedness for students transitioning to independent living. She partnered with a professor at CSU Channel Islands to lead health education workshops, distributed 100 College Sick Boxes filled with essential health items, and taught students how to safely use over-the-counter medications, recognize symptoms, and know when to seek medical care. She also presented at her high school, encouraging future college students to prepare their own personalized sick boxes before leaving home.

Through her leadership, Jade empowered students with the knowledge and confidence to care for themselves while living independently, creating a lasting impact that extends well beyond her workshops.
Congratulations, Jade, on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award! Your leadership, compassion, and commitment to helping others prepare for a healthier future are an inspiration. We are incredibly proud of all you have accomplished and can't wait to see where your journey takes you next
Jade’s Future Plans after High School Graduation:
Jade plans to major in Biochemistry and pursue a career in the biotechnology or pharmaceutical industry, where she hopes to contribute to research that improves lives and advances healthcare.

Congratulations to Zoe and Madison of Troop 15525 on earning the Girl Scout Silver Award with their inspiring project, Felton Rocks Nest!
After recognizing that many elementary students were unfamiliar with the programs and opportunities available at their local library, Zoe and Madison partnered with their community to create a colorful public art project that connected first-grade students with the library through creativity, collaboration, and fun.
The girls organized a community rock-painting project with local first graders, creating a permanent "rock nest" installation while introducing students to the library as a place for learning, creativity, and community engagement. By working closely with school staff, library representatives, and local businesses, they demonstrated outstanding leadership, communication, and teamwork throughout the project.
Their project will continue to inspire young readers, artists, and families to visit the library and participate in community activities for years to come.

Congratulations to the amazing Girl Scouts of Troop 66036 on earning the Girl Scout Bronze Award with their inspiring Menstrual Health Support Project! Recognizing that many students experience period product insecurity, these 13 dedicated Juniors led a community-wide effort to assemble 216 menstrual hygiene kits for the CVUSD Conejo Closet. The kits will be distributed to elementary school nurses, ensuring students have access to essential supplies when they need them most. The troop also collected shampoo and conditioner for families in need and created a sustainable template so future troops and community organizations can continue replenishing the kits.
Throughout their project, the girls demonstrated outstanding leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while helping reduce the stigma surrounding menstrual health and ensuring students feel supported, prepared, and confident.
Thank you for making a lasting difference in the lives of students throughout the Conejo Valley. We are so proud of you!

The 58th National Council Session (NCS) is Girl Scouts’ highest governing body, where elected delegates from across the country gather to shape our Movement’s future. Held every three years, the 58th NCS in July 2026 will focus on strategic discussion topics and proposals aligned to Vision 2030. Delegates influence national priorities, vote on proposals, and provide guidance to the National Board through a transparent, collaborative agenda process. The NCS reflects our democratic tradition, ensuring members have a voice in strengthening Girl Scouting nationwide.

The following three proposals have been placed on the agenda for delegate deliberation and vote at the 58th National Council Session. More information will be coming, but stay tuned to ensure we hear your voice.

Submitted by: Girl Scouts of Eastern Pennsylvania
This proposal would allow Girl Scouts working toward the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards to solicit philanthropic donations for their projects (with council approval), expanding current policy that limits solicitation primarily to Seniors and Ambassadors pursuing the Gold Award.
Submitted by: Girl Scouts of Greater Chicago and Northwest Indiana
This proposal would reduce the threshold requiring National Council approval for dues increases from 25% to 15% within a triennium, increasing delegate oversight on national membership dues adjustments

Submitted by: Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland
This proposal seeks to limit GSUSA licensing of Girl Scout cookie-related food products during council entrepreneurship program sales periods
