Lainie’s Angels at Hi-Hills
Campers Face Off Against Staff in Charity Game This Thursday Hi-Hills Day Camp hosted its second annual campers-versuscounselors charity basketball game. All proceeds benefited Lainie’s Angels, a national nonprofit organization dedicated to providing counseling and support services to the families of children diagnosed with cancer and blood disorders. The game began with a stunning rendition of “The Star Spangled Banner” performed on the trumpet by our very own archery instructor, Eliott Cohen. Although the staff team earned an early lead, the campers– coached by Lainie’s Angels founder Stathi Afendoulis–came back in the second half to secure the win. Participants and spectators were
given some great prizes provided by the Lainie’s Angels organization. The spectators showed great spirit and sportsmanship, and the game raised money for an important cause. DJ Nicole Spiotta volunteered her services and supplied some exciting game-day music that really got the crowd going. The game is quickly becoming a favorite camp tradition. We finished off the week with a superhero dress-up day at Friday’s morning assembly. Finally, at Council Ring, we heard another round of great bunk cheers and skits.

Dear Hi-Hills,
YIKES–I can’t believe it’s the end of week seven already! Monday began with an overflow of enthusiasm from last week’s sportsmanship theme. The spirit and rivalry that still hung in the air between the Peapack Penguins and the Gladstone Gladiators made for fun banter during morning assemblies. The friendly rivalry between campers was soon forged into an alliance against the staff in preparation for the second annual Lainie’s Angels campers-versus-counselors charity basketball game. The game was not only a nail-biter, but it was tremendous fun as well. I can still hear the cheering from all the fans in the stands. The campers came out on top, but everyone played like a champion. Please check out our Facebook page as well as our website’s photo gallery for more details and pictures from the game. Thursday was also our second Parent Luncheon of the summer. I love the look on campers’ faces when they proudly introduce their new friends and counselors to their parents. We know it’s difficult for parents, grandparents and special friends to take time out of their day to join us–thank you for making the day so special! Friday was a whirlwind of activity, with many campers traveling off campus for special trips including fishing, ice skating and rock climbing. They returned to camp for Council Ring and amazed us with talented skits and cheers. Thank you for another great week with your children!

Bunk 1: Miss Kathleen’s and Miss Monica’s F ishies The children are having so much fun! Avery swam beautifully but still wanted to stay in the low end of the pool to interact with his bunkmates. Ellie was awesome in martial arts–she has great kicking technique. Logan improved his tennis game. Fiona painted everything she could in pottery. She is a natural artist! Isabella was a new addition to our bunk this week; she did a great job learning dance moves for our skit, which we will perform next week at Council Ring. We can’t wait to see all the children again next week!
Bunk 2: Miss Stefanie’s and Miss Erin’s Leopards This week we asked each of our campers to share their favorite activity. Jack and Alex’s favorite activity was swimming because they liked playing with the lifeguards. Finnley’s favorite activity was dance because he learned new moves. Arianna, Anthony and Daniel’s favorite activity was martial arts because they learned new kicks. Neil’s favorite activity was tennis because he liked hitting the ball with the racket. Cece’s favorite activity was cooking. Zach’s favorite activity was nature because he got to pet snakes and other critters. Caleb’s favorite activity was athletics, because he ran around with his friends. Our favorite part of camp was seeing the children’s bright smiling faces each and every day!
Bunk Upda tes Bunk 9: T igersharks The Tigersharks had a lot of fun during week seven. At nature, we played with airplanes and whirly-birds to learn about lift and drag. As always, we had a blast in the pool. During athletics, we enjoyed playing “capture the flag” against Bunk 11. Bunk 9 is learning and growing more than ever. Next week is the last week of camp, and we’re all excited to make the most of it! -Pat
Bunk 10: T he Rockin’ Chatterboxes This week the girls enjoyed keeping themselves balanced and in harmony with one another while learning new yoga skills in Mr. Mark’s class. As always the Nature Club remained the most popular activity at camp. The girls had a great time cheering for the teams participating in the campers-versus-counselors charity basketball game for Lainie’s Angels. Also this week was Photo Day and the Parent Luncheon! -Beryl and Emily
Bunk 11: T he Grumpy Giants It was another great week for the Grumpy Giants. Tyler T. kept a positive attitude about all of our activities this week. Bradley continued to try new foods to eat during lunch period. Jake was full of energy, and showed off his skills in the “Gaga” pit. Nick was very committed to Nature Club, his favorite camp activity. We all enjoyed watching the charity basketball game this past Thursday, as well as the Parent Luncheon. -Taylor and Paul
Bunk Upda tes Bunk 12: Beautiful Brave Butterflies What a fun filled week for the Brave Beautiful Butterflies! We started the week with the Leagues playoffs. Caitlin and Amanda will face each other’s teams next week in the finals. We all enjoyed our bunk pajama party. The girls played hot potato, chubby bunny and enjoyed manicures and popcorn. All week the girls practiced hard for our bunk skit. Anna had the giggles while she practiced her part–she made us laugh all week! The girls did an amazing job and we couldn’t be more proud! -Jen and Jamie
Bunk 13: T he Fantastic Fury We started off week seven with our fishing trip to Chester, NJ where we caught 15 fish. This week was also Picture Day and the Parent Luncheon, which was a blast for all the campers. On Thursday the campers enjoyed watching the charity basketball game for Lainie’s Angels. It was an entertaining game and we raised money for a great cause. Leagues fever was at an all-time high–the Ducks and the Orangutans even made it to next week’s finals! -Cory
Bunk 14: T he Sugar Rush Pottery Club was a big hit this week for the Sugar Rush. Some of the campers have even advanced to making piggy banks. We broke out the Spin Art machine (with glitter!) and we had a blast using it. We had a great time watching the campersversus-counselors basketball game right after the Parent Luncheon on Thursday. Friday was our last fishing trip, and we tried very hard to break our summer record of 36 fish! -Nancy and Megan
Bunk Upda tes Bunk 17: T he Chicken F ingers The Chicken Fingers had another great week at Hi-Hills. On Monday, Tuesday and Thursday we played hard on the athletic fields for Leagues playoffs. We enjoyed the Parent Luncheon on Thursday, as well as the campers-versus-counselors charity basketball game. Three of our kids played for the campers’ team, which they helped lead to victory. We also received fun prizes and helped raise money for a good cause. -RJ
Bunk 18: Powerpuff Girls The Powerpuff Girls have been busy this week with many exciting events including Leagues playoffs, the Lainie’s Angels charity basketball game and the Parent Luncheon. It’s hard to believe that camp is almost over for the summer. The Bunk 18 girls have done such a great job in everything, and we are very proud of them. They all work hard as a team and are looking forward to next summer at Hi-Hills. We welcomed Callie and Sophia to the bunk this week. -Maria and Dylan

Program News Archery
In archery this week, we continued to perfect our shooting skills. The campers each shot five arrows at the target one by one. So far, Bunk 17 leads the camp with 10 bull’s-eyes, four of which were scored by Phil Lockitt. I hope we finish camp with even more great archery– maybe we’ll even see a Robin Hood (a split arrow) or two before the end of the summer season! -Eliott
Volleyball
This week at volleyball the campers began to put together the skills they have been working on all summer. We practiced passing and setting techniques during games of “keep-it-up” and traditional volleyball. Everyone had fun getting involved and participating. It was great to see how much the campers have improved their skills since the start of the summer. -Jen
Program News Fishing
Friday of this week we concluded our second round of fishing for the summer. All bunks have gone on two trips, with the exception of Bunk 14, Bunk 17 and Bunk 18. Due to scheduling changes these bunks will be fishing next Tuesday and Thursday. The campers have really enjoyed their time at the lake. They all learned how to properly cast and how to follow fishing safety rules. The water was a bit muddy this week because of some recent rain, so the fish weren’t as hungry as they have been in other weeks. -Em
Yoga
In honor of art explosion week, we have all been working on several different partner poses during our time in yoga. Campers benefit from tapping into their creative sides while attempting the Double Dog, the Ladder, Open Heart, the Lizard and the Stone, among others. There were plenty of laughs as the campers worked with one another toward a common goal. -Marc
Tennis
Mild and beautiful weather was greeted by splendid, graceful tennis in week seven. We have been working on creating and sustaining rallies. We have also been perfecting our backhand and forehand shots, braving the net for volleys and learning the way tennis is scored. I am delighted that many kids have signed up for the week eight camper-counselor doubles tournament! -Marc
Program News Pottery
The glazing festivities continued in pottery this week as we approached the final days of the camp season. Kinder Camp has really done a great job with their glazes. They are always enthusiastic and their sculptures are looking fantastic. All campers should feel free to stop by the workshop–the kiln is hot and we’ll be finishing our projects up until the end of next week! -Brian
Nature
This week in nature the campers participated in a variety of fun activities. We went on sensory hikes around campus and we learned about lift and thrust by flying model airplanes and whirly-birds. Lower Bunk Nature Club continued to fill up its roster with enthusiastic participants anxious to meet the animals. Next week we will take our final trek of the summer into the Peapack Brook, by now familiar ground to the campers. -Mr. Nature
Martial Arts
This week in martial arts we got back to basics and focused on our kicks and punches. Kinder Camp astounded all the counselors with their strong moves and loud screams. They showed more focus and determination than they ever have before. Throughout all this week’s sessions, campers practiced kicking and punching targets in relay race and height challenge activities. Campers showed amazing sportsmanship this week as well. Every group activity was accompanied by cheers of support by fellow bunkmates. -Ben

Greetings from Kinder Camp This week we all took part in some great swimming. The weather was beautiful, and it was fun to be together in the pool. On Tuesday we met “farmer” Ted. He took us through the Gill garden and taught us how to care for many types of vegetables. He allowed us to take home fresh tomatoes and carrots. We had our pictures taken on Tuesday and everyone looked fabulous. Friday was superhero dress-up day–we all enjoyed clasping our towels to our necks and putting sunglasses on to look like our favorite heroes.
Athletics was in a “thieving” mood this week, as campers enjoyed playing an all-time favorite, “steal the bacon.” Next week, campers will have the opportunity to select which sport or game they want to play during their athletics session. The Leagues championship series will take place next Monday. The girls’ series will feature the firstplace Jumping Jellybeans taking on the second-seeded Mustache Mummies. On the boys’ side, the top-seeded Ducks will take on the third-seeded Orangutans in the finals. Good luck to all the teams!

Teen Travel
This week in Teen Travel, we kicked off the fun on Tuesday with a river tubing expedition on the Delaware River. We stopped by CBK Mountain Adventure in Tannersville, PA to do some rock climbing. We also returned to New York City for a trip to Citi Field to watch the New York Mets beat the Colorado Rockies 2-1. Next week we’re looking forward to checking out the Dutch Springs Water Park, and also to our annual camping trip! -Jim
