From the Headmaster The ancient Greek playwright Sophocles once wrote, “You have to wait for the sunset to see how good the day was.”

As the 2012-13 academic year comes to a close, I think it safe to say that it has been a very good one for Gill St. Bernard’s School.

From the arts and athletics to clubs and service activities, our students have experienced a great deal of success over the past 10 months. The college matriculation list is again a strong one and our graduates are well-prepared to take on the academic rigors of the next level of their education. While 2012-13 was not without its challenges, the more difficult events only served to bring us closer and strengthen the bonds of our school community.

Though this year has concluded, work has already begun on the next. The new turf field project is underway and planning is in the advanced stages for all of our programs beginning in late August.

Enrollment is strong—in fact our Primary classes are already at full capacity—and I am very pleased in the quality of our new students.

I wish to thank the faculty and staff, as well as the members of our board of trustees, for their

tireless efforts this school year on behalf of Gill St. Bernard's. In addition, I am grateful for the many contributions made by parents and alumni to benefit the school. I am proud of the Class of 2013 and confident that it will achieve even greater success in the coming years.

Summer is here, and though the rain seems to have become a constant feature in our lives, the skies will soon clear. I wish all a safe and restful summer.

Parents’ Association Pays Tribute to Volunteers at Annual Breakfast More than 80 parent-volunteers gathered for a year-end breakfast in Founders Hall on May 8, where they celebrated the success and accomplishments of Gill throughout 2012-13.

An event hosted each year by the Parents' Association, the annual breakfast serves to show heartfelt appreciation for the many efforts of families who volunteer their time to benefit the school. Whether chairing a committee, acting as class parent or volunteering to bring snacks the day of a game, every effort plays a huge part in bettering GSB and its students.

While expressing his gratitude along with Lori Taylor P '14, president of the Parents' Association, Headmaster Sid Rowell noted the importance of supporting one another as a community, qualities that make Gill St. Bernard's a truly special place for all.

Debora Miller Retires After 25 Years of Service The Lower School division officially declared May 15, 2013 as Mrs. Miller Day, a special date to recognize retiring faculty member Debora Miller.

Throughout her 25-year tenure as a second grade teacher with the school, Miller has shown constant love and support toward both faculty members and students.

In addition, Miller has played a significant role in enhancing the many unique and exciting educational opportunities offered to students throughout the Lower School since 1988. “She has been a leader in the development of the curriculum, in particular strengthening reading and writing programs as well as introducing the Singapore math program,” Headmaster Sid Rowell told faculty, staff and board of trustees members at an annual year-end reception held May 10 at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J.

Miller, who holds a Master of Arts from The College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, V.A., and teaching certificates across five states, also relies on skills developed during annual workshops, through college coursework and at conferences to provide fellow colleagues with encouragement and advice. “Mrs. Miller took me under her wing when I started at GSB 12 years ago and I’ve learned so much from her,” second grade teacher Mary Tuohy told students.

To show their appreciation for all that Miller has given for the benefit of the school and its community, and to announce the commemoration of Mrs. Miller Day, Lower School faculty and students across all divisions held a surprise assembly in Evans Hall on May 15. Presented during the two-part gathering were musical performances from primary through fourth grade students who sang “We Appreciate You,” a congratulatory video produced by Tuohy in honor of Miller, and numerous farewell gifts such as a hand-made quilt, floral bouquet, books of remembrance, collection of cards and a signed copy of Dr. Seuss’ Oh the Places You’ ll Go, provided by students and faculty campus wide.

“I loved coming to school every day because of students and teachers like you,” Miller said while thanking the group. “I feel very fortunate to have been surrounded by such caring and supportive colleagues, families and wonderful students for the past 25 years.”

A proud parent of two Gill St. Bernard’s alumnae, Lauren ’98 and Corinne ’00, Miller speaks on behalf of both herself and her husband David in saying, “We are grateful for the wonderful education and experiences our daughters had while at GSB. Gill St. Bernard’s will always be a part of our lives; a deep connection that neither time nor distance can break.”

Lower School Students Celebrate Special Day with Grandparents Primary through fourth grade students entertained more than 220 guests during the Lower School’s Grandparents Day event on May 24. Throughout the biennial celebration, meant to recognize all grandparents for the significant role they play in the growth and development of GSB’s youngest students, each visitor attended specially-planned programs and activities, as well as an afternoon concert and luncheon.

Activities that took place in the Cox Lower School included family tree-making sessions in second grade classrooms and arts and crafts projects with Primary pupils in the Early Childhood wing. The Kindergarten Class of 2025 also performed Sergei Prokofiev’s Peter and the Wolf, while third grade students dressed in wigs and hats to present biography book reports before family and friends. Also available to grandparents was an informational bird-watching display completed by first grade students, and a school history timeline developed by the Class of 2021.

The day’s events concluded with a special concert in the Old Gym, led by music teachers Jill Fedon and Leigh Seibert, followed by a luncheon and family portrait session in the Athletic Center.

St. Bernard’s School and Gill School Alumni Celebrate Golden Anniversary on GSB Campus Alumni from the SBS Class of 1963, as well as Gill School graduates from the ’60s, traveled from as far away as London, England to gather at a special reunion held June 1 and 2 on campus. Event-goers reunited with old friends and classmates, toured the grounds, heard from Headmaster Sid Rowell and had the opportunity to meet current students and faculty. The two-day event came to a close when more than 50 alumni and guests gathered for dinner in Founders Hall.

Members from the 50th anniversary classes of both St. Bernard’s School and The Gill School also joined in this year’s Commencement exercises, during which they were presented with inscribed medals representative of the role each school has played in the success of GSB today.

Third Annual Relay for Life at GSB Raises Funds for Cancer Research Nearly 200 GSB community members gathered around the varsity track June 4, as they pitched their tents and laced up their walking shoes to prepare for an all-night fight against cancer at the third annual Relay for Life.

A phenomenon that originated with one man’s vision for a cure nearly 30 years ago, Relay for Life raises more than $4.5 billion through 5,200 events across the United States each year, and includes more than four million citizens in 20 countries around the globe. GSB’s relay was first organized by former students Kathryn Corcoran ’11, Jaclyn Fleurant ’11 and Gina Richardella ’11, as well as current student Caragh Corcoran ’13 and faculty member Peter Schmidt, in 2011. Since then, the school has donated more than $100,000 to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Nineteen teams comprised of approximately 175 students, faculty, alumni, family and friends took part in the GSB relay this June, coming together for a night-long walk that began at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday and concluded 6:00 a.m. on Wednesday. The 2013 event, which has raised more than $31,000 in funds thus far, was led by founders C. Corcoran and Schmidt along with senior Stark Kirby and Upper School librarian Emilia Giordano. Additional online contributions in support of Gill St. Bernard’s third annual Relay for Life campaign will be accepted until August 1. GSB Players Earn Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards

The GSB Players’ spring production, Little Women, was honored June 4 at the 18th annual Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards. Announced in late April, Gill St. Bernard’s received seven Final Nominations as well as three Honorable Mentions in this year’s competition, which annually encourages and rewards exceptional accomplishments in the production of high school musicals throughout New Jersey. A top-five nominee among nearly 100 public, independent and parochial schools statewide at the 2013 awards ceremony, Gill was recognized for excellence in the following two areas: Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role, Jana Bernard ’13 Outstanding Costuming Achievement, Paul H. Canada This most-recent accomplishment joins five Rising Star Awards in 2012, including Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical with The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

Bernard, also honored last spring for her outstanding performance as an actress in a supporting role, won this year’s Outstanding Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role category in recognition of her part as “Margaret ‘Marme’ March” in Little Women. She, along with Matthew Lynn in Westfield High School’s Bat Boy: The Musical, will compete at The National High School Musical Theater Awards in New York City on July 1. An actress and performer in eight productions throughout her tenure with the Players and member of the GSB community since third grade, Bernard will pursue a double major in theater and neuroscience at American University this fall.

worthy of Rising Star recognition,” said Canada who, along with his team, has received the Rising Star Award for Outstanding Costuming Achievement six times since 2007.

Since joining the theater department at GSB in 1990, Canada has overseen more than four dozen comedies, dramas, mysteries and musicals as performing arts chair. Under his leadership, and through the dedicated work of his team of theatre professionals, students and countless volunteers, the GSB Players has earned more than 40 nominations and 16 Rising Star Awards.

Retiring and New Board Members Announced Gill St. Bernard’s is pleased to announce the addition of four new board members—John Raymonds P ’21, Rose Kirk P ’18, Preston Pinkett III, and Linda Moore—for the 2013-14 academic year. Additional information on this newest group of trustees will be featured in the summer edition of GSB News and in the fall issue of GSB Magazine. The school also bids farewell to two retiring trustees, whose steadfast leadership and commitment will be dearly missed: Maureen Stefanick P ’13 was appointed to the board of trustees in 2007. A dedicated member of the board’s finance committee, Stefanick has played an integral part in promoting the Gill St. Bernard’s Annual Fund and other capital campaigns throughout her tenure.

Prior to accepting her longstanding position on the board, additional leadership functions held by Stefanick at GSB included co-chair of the annual Dinner Dance & Auction for two years (2005-06), co-chair of the Silent Auction and Live Auction committees between 2000 and 2003, and co-chair of the auction’s decorating committee in 2004. Stefanick was also co-chair of the “Pandora’s Box” committee at the annual GSB Parents’ Association Fashion Show in 2003, and fulfilled the role of vice president to the Parents’ Association throughout the 2006-07 academic year.

Day and volunteered as chair of the Fashion Show’s Luxury Raffle committee during the 2009-10 academic year.

Beyond her involvement as both a parent and trustee at Gill, Kirby also works with Preschool Advantage (formerly known as Project Acorn), a not-for-profit organization offering quality preschool education to Morris County families in need. In addition to her longstanding role as a member of the board at Preschool Advantage, Kirby also served as chair of the 2011 Turning Leaves gala and as honorary chair at the event the following year. Along with her husband Dillard, president and director of the F.M. Kirby Foundation, Inc., the Kirbys have helped Preschool Advantage offer financial assistance to more than 650 Morris County children since 1995.

Both the Kirby family and F.M. Kirby Foundation proudly support the Gill St. Bernard’s School general fund, as well as other education-based organizations. Kirby, who graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Fairfield University in 1981, currently resides in Mendham, N.J., with her husband and two children, Elizabeth ’09 and Stark ’13. Despite her son’s graduation from GSB this spring, Kirby looks forward to continuing her service as a member of the school’s capital campaign committee, and also hopes to frequent athletic and theatrical events on campus in the future.

Outside the GSB community, Stefanick has been treasurer of the Meadow Lane Property Owners’ Association for the past eight years and has served on the finance council for the Church of Christ the King in New Vernon, N.J., since 2012.

A graduate from St. John’s University and a Certified Public Accountant in the state of New York, Stefanick spent the early part of her professional career as an accountant with Price Waterhouse (now PwC) before also working for several years in recruitment for the finance industry. Early Childhood Program "Makes Music" at Annual Spring Concert The Lower School held its annual Early Childhood spring concert, "We Are the Music Makers" for family and friends in Evans Hall on May 9.

Directed by music teacher Jill Fedon, the concert featured musical performances from Primary 3/4 through Kindergarten students who sang while playing various handheld instruments including the maracas, triangle and drums. "The students brought pure joy to the stage both at rehearsals and during the show," Fedon said.

Also accompanying the group during classic songs such as "Do-Re-Mi" by Oscar Hammerstein II and Richard Rogers, and the well-known "Lamb Chop" theme, "The Song That Doesn't End," were Lower School teacher Kathleen Burke on piano and percussionist Joe DeVico.

"I could not be more proud to have been given the opportunity to share in this experience with each family," added Fedon.

Middle School Honors Chorus Ends School Year on a “High Note” Just three days prior to presenting a spring concert for family and friends in the Chapel, 25 Middle School students as well as director of the honors chorus, Amy Southerland, attended the High Note Music Festival. A fun-filled, one-day learning event that challenges its participants to showcase their skills for 20 minutes or less before a panel of judges, the High Note Music Festival also provides aspiring singers with tips and techniques for improving overall performance.

Ranked “superior” among the eight teams featured at this year’s annual festival at the Holy Family School, GSB scored an average 94.5 out of 100 possible points. “All of us should be proud of their musicianship. Our students were great representatives of Gill St. Bernard’s School,” said Southerland, who noted that one judge described the students as beautiful young musicians while another applauded their cooperation and self-sufficiency.

In honor of its hard work and success, the group received a trophy and invitation to spend the afternoon at Six Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, N.J.

Spring 2013 Unit Broadens Students’ Experiences Gill’s 10-day spring Unit began May 20, as Upper School students took part in various programs designed to incorporate learning through practical work or field trips.

An annual program established in 1973, more than 100 Gill St. Bernard’s students spent this year’s Unit traveling to remote destinations, from Puerto Rico to Panama. During such visits, students learned to salsa, hiked through El Yunque National Forest, explored ancient caves and volunteered their time toward performing community service. Another Unit, “Houses to Homes: Guatemala,” emphasized the value of hard work as students collaborated with the nonprofit organization De Casas A Hogares, to help build and paint cinderblock homes for three impoverished families inhabiting the country’s Highlands. “Going to the worksite every day, getting to know these families and playing with their kids were integral parts of the process. Just seeing how appreciative and thankful they were despite their living conditions truly demonstrates that there are many ways of life that can bring great happiness,” said Carlson Brown ’14. The 17 students who visited Antigua, Guatemala, also broke into smaller groups of four or five individuals to live with native host families. “Being around the Guatemalan families provided us with a new perspective and allowed us to learn about a different and intriguing culture,” Emily Buynak ’14 said.

Meanwhile, students and faculty visiting Paris encountered art, history, architecture and French culture while exploring The Louvre, the Palace of Versailles and Eiffel Tower. Relying on the metro as a means of transportation, the group of student-tourists also made time for sampling Parisian delicacies such as crêpes and macaroons.

Just miles away from campus, 13 students participating in the “Evolution of Hip Hop” Unit attended dance classes at the world-renowned Alvin Ailey School of Dance, as well as a live performance entitled RHAW (Rennie Harris Awe-Inspiring Works) at the New Victory Theater in New York City.

Throughout the in-depth study, which covered dance, art, fashion and music, and how each relates to society, students also joined filmmaker and activist Byron Hurt in a discussion about the negative stereotypes associated with hip hop lyrics today. Other Unit groups went boating in the Merrill Creek Reservoir and on the Delaware—from French Town to Byram (“Canoeing and Kayaking”), trained for FEMA’s Community Emergency Response Teams program (“Somebody Call 9-1-1”), learned yoga among other fitness routines, (“Fun with Fitness”), and attended a lecture by a licensed massage therapist (“Healthy Living”). Each program concluded with a formal presentation, beginning June 3.

Middle School Unit Offers Wide Range of Topics Following final exams, Middle School students enjoyed various programs and trips as part of the spring 2013 Unit between May 28 and June 4.

Led by faculty and staff, activities for fifth and sixth grade classes included a trip to the Da Vinci Science Center in Allentown, Penn., and beach day at Sandy Hook National Park. For seventh and eighth grade students, programs included an in-depth tour of the state judicial system—complete with visits to the Somerset County Police Academy and Warren County Court House (“Order in the Court”), an on-campus “Cooking Unit” which culminated in a field trip to Delicious Heights restaurant in Bedminster, four yoga classes led by instructors from The School of Royal Yoga in Chester (“Balance from Inside Out”), a “Sailing Unit” with lessons held at the New Jersey Sailing School in Bricktown, and a painting course which allowed participants to transfer real-life scenery from campus to canvas with the simple stroke of a brush (“En Plein Air”).

Another part of this year’s Middle School Unit was the chance to perform in a musical co-directed by Performing Arts Chair Paul H. Canada and music teacher Amy Southerland. After five days of rehearsing in the GSB theater, eight student-actors shared the musical with students and parents, as well as a special group of visitors from the Plainfield Senior Center on June 3. An honorary luncheon with the visiting senior citizens also followed the performance.

STUDENT LIFE RECAP

Applying Real-Life Architecture to Interactive Design Since joining GSB as a Middle School computer teacher in 2010, Carrie Petkiewich has assigned a year-end project requiring eighth grade students to design a digital blueprint of a building using the complimentary architecture program known as “Floorplanner”—the easiest and most realistic way to create and share interactive floor plans online. “Students have enjoyed constructing houses and venues with the program, which gives you both a 2-D and 3-D view of your building, as well as a variety of options for decorating the interior with furniture and exterior with landscaping and more,” said Petkiewich.

Along with Middle School math teacher Frank Corrado, Petkiewich also introduced the innovative website to sixth grade students in 2012, challenging each to design a performing arts center for GSB. Since then, this same project has expanded to include eighth grade math classes.

With interest in architecture on the rise, Director of Operations Stephen Graham assisted Petkiewich in arranging a visit from professional architect Shyam Perangur with the Class of Eighth grade students view a presentation by 2017 on May 1. Up, Up and Away

Kites Take Flight in the Lower School The culmination of world language lessons containing a brief background on the history of and culture behind kites, third grade students tested their own hand-made kites during numerous “flight” sessions this May. New to the Lower School division in 2012-13, the innovative kite-making project combined arts, mathematics, poetry and world language into what resulted in a fun and exciting experience for all.

“Students loved the project and learned so much while participating in this event,” said Joanne Bodnar, a Lower School art teacher.

Beginning in art class, the Class of 2022 used division and multiplication to section-off a sheet of DuPont™ Tyvek® Housewrap, and later cut it into the shape of a kite. Following the application of individual designs, the addition of structural reinforcements and the attachment of approximately 150 feet of string, students were ready to take flight!

Meanwhile in Hope Napolitan’s world language classroom, third grade students discussed the history and cultural significance of kites in many countries across the globe. They also created Diamante poems, a form of written expression that uses carefully selected nouns, adjectives and verbs to format text in the shape of a diamond. Each poem referenced the history and cultural connection linking kites to numerous destinations worldwide, as well as applied descriptive language about flight in general.

Sophomores Take Spirit Cup

Annual Contest Benefits Local Community A friendly competition that began with orientation activities in early October, the annual Upper School Spirit Cup contest resulted in a come-from-behind victory by the Class of 2015 this May. Trailing by four spirit points overall after numerous events throughout the school year, the sophomores stormed back to capture the 2012-13 Spirit Cup crown with a first place finish in the can drive competition and last-second find by Kenneth “Casey” Meyer ’15 in the end-of-year GSB Knight Hunt.

Established to promote pride among the division’s four individual classes, the Spirit Cup contest has become a major highlight of the year. “The Spirit Cup has helped classes raise money, has served as a fun diversion through the cold winter months and, as witnessed this spring, enabled a local food shelter to restock its shelves,” said Michael Wendell, assistant dean of students to the Upper School. “It’s a win-win situation for everyone.”

Through combined efforts, the Upper School was able to deliver close to 600 lbs. of canned goods to the Interfaith Food Pantry in Morris Plains, N.J. last month. “You are ‘neighbors helping neighbors’ and we deeply appreciate your support,” Doug McMahon, volunteer coordinator at the Interfaith Food Pantry told Director of Academic Technology Michael Chimes.

Science Students Raise Quail in the Classroom this Spring Sixth grade students became the proud parents of 30 Bobwhite quail this spring, after incubating and brooding 120 eggs delivered April 2 by the New Jersey Outdoor Alliance (NJOA). An interactive opportunity for children to learn about the habitat requirements for and life-cycle of the Bobwhite, the NJOA’s “Quail in the Classroom” program requires that each hatched and healthy chick be returned to the outdoor alliance for rearing and eventual release into approved areas across Gloucester, Salem and Cumberland Counties.

Before returning their offspring to the NJOA for the summer, the Class of 2019 also introduced the Bobwhite to fourth and first grade students on May 22 and 23, explaining its life-cycle, the “Quail in the Classroom” program, and reasons why this elusive bird’s presence has steadily declined since the ’50s. According to the sixth grade “scientists,” the statewide quail population has diminished due to habitat loss and natural succession. Throughout the presentation, students learned that species of quail primarily inhabit small fields interspersed with weeds, grasses and shrubs, and that after four to 15 years, natural succession—a change in land over time— transforms these fields into pine-covered habitats unsuitable for the Bobwhite.

Strings Ensemble Concludes School Year with Spring Recital The Gill St. Bernard’s School Strings Ensemble, made up of advanced, intermediate and beginner student-musicians, proudly presented its 2013 spring recital on May 30, performing traditional folk songs such as “This Old Man” and classical works including Bach’s “Minuet No.1” on the violin, viola and cello.

The 11-member ensemble, open to students grades one through nine, first developed in 2012 when the Judith G. Wharton Music Center in Berkley Heights, N.J. introduced Director of Studies Peter Schmidt to conductor Kimberly McCrann. McCrann, who holds a B.M. in violin performance from the Peabody Conservatory of Music and a two-year post-baccalaureate Artist’s Diploma from Montclair State University, has also directed youth symphonies at Montclair’s John J. Cali School of Music since 2006. “We’re very excited to have Kimberly here with us at Gill,” says Schmidt.

“Thus far, we’ve seen the program grow significantly and have every confidence it will continue to grow under her leadership in the future. Her work has been the epitome of diligence and devotion.”

A NEW CHAPTER Congratulations to the Class of 2013 Eighty-four seniors received high school diplomas at Gill St. Bernard’s 2013 Commencement on June 2. Joining in the annual celebration were students, alumni, faculty, family, trustees and friends of GSB, who applauded the success had by this year’s graduating class.

Among those individuals recognized throughout the ceremony were 19 “GSB Lifers” who have devoted 12-plus years to the school, and 18 award recipients who were honored for excellence in science, history, math, athletics and more. Four seniors also received Honor Awards, while 17 graduated Cum Laude or within the top-20 percent of their class. ATHLETICS Two Seniors Named Somerset County “Scholar-Athlete of the Year ” Emily Iannaconi ’13 and Jae-Chiang Wong ’13 joined 30 area high school seniors at the 30th annual Somerset County Scholar-Athlete Dinner on May 15, where they earned distinction for both academic and athletic excellence and were presented with a silver bowl and engraved plaque in recognition of this honor.

Sponsored each year by the Somerset County High School Principals’ Association, the 2013 awards ceremony paid tribute to one male and one female “scholar-athlete” from 16 high schools throughout the county.

A prolific distance runner and three-sport athlete with varsity letters in cross country, indoor track and spring track and field, Iannaconi led the Knights to several conference, prep and state championships, and also qualified for the NJSIAA Meet of Champions in early June. She will continue her athletic career at the College of Somerset County Scholar-Athlete Award the Holy Cross this fall. Off the track, Iannaconi is a Cum Laude graduate and lifetime recipients (l. to r.) Jae-Chiang Wong ’13 and Emily Iannaconi ’13. member of both the Spanish Honor Society and Quill and Scroll Honor Society.

She served as editor of The Fourth Estate, the Upper School student newspaper, and was a contributor to The Unknown Muse, an annual literary magazine containing poetry, fiction, essays and art work.

Honors received by Iannaconi during her tenure at GSB include The Elizabeth Gill Girl Award (2013), an annual distinction given to one female candidate who best exemplifies characteristics of faith, honor and consideration, the C. Elliott Knoke Award (2012) in recognition of her citizenship and scholarship, and the Margaret D. Jefferson Cup (2010), established to honor the strong will, determination, fierce pride and sense of right and wrong found in women.

Wong, a three-year starter on the varsity boys’ soccer team, has won back-to-back sectional titles as well as one Prep B Championship. A leading scorer throughout his tenure with the Knights, Wong has also attained all-conference and all-county recognition. Inside the classroom, he has achieved excellence in advanced placement courses including: chemistry, biology, environmental science, physics, psychology, microeconomics and calculus AB. In addition to pursuing a degree in biology, Wong will continue his soccer career at Marist College in the fall.

Robert Berman ’15 scattered four hits and struck out five in his third pitching victory of the season. In addition, Brendan Dougher ’14 and Matthew Taylor ’16 added two hits apiece.

Success continued with a 4-3 victory over Bishop George Ahr High School on May 22. Trailing 3-2 at the start of the seventh, D. Spear led off with his second double of the day, went to third on a single by Amoroso and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mark Leonhard ’13 to tie up the game. An RBI single from Beveridge (3-for-3) sealed the 4-3 victory.

Leading the Knights was Napolitano with two hits, three RBIs, two runs and a two-run homerun. She was backed by Amanda Greenberg ’13 and Corbett with two hits apiece. Margaret “Meg” Donlin ’15 also drove in three runs, Paige Knichel ’15, Caroline Roch ’14 and Kennedy Whitehead ’16 scored one run each, and Elizabeth “Sally” Gordon ’14 added a run-scoring single.

The season continued with an 11-0 thrashing of Bernards High School on May 10. In addition to tossing a three-hitter with nine strikeouts, Corbett also joined Greenberg, Whitehead and Eliza Brookman ’15 with two hits apiece. Napolitano went 4-for-5 with five RBIs to give the team its third straight win, a 19-3 triumph over South Hunterdon High School on May 13. Gordon had two hits, while Roch added two hits and two RBIs. Gill advanced to the Prep B finals for the third time in three seasons after securing a semifinal win at Wardlaw-Hartridge School on May 14. Corbett tossed a four-hitter with five strikeouts, Knichel had two hits, and Brookman added one hit and one walk to clinch the 2-0 victory over the tournament’s #1-seed. Despite three homeruns from Knichel, Donlin and Whitehead, as well as two hits apiece by Napolitano, Corbett and Greenberg, GSB fell to Newark Academy in the Prep B Championship on May 16. This was followed by a 5-0 loss to Bridgewater-Raritan High School on May 20.

The team quickly recovered, as it began the NJSIAA Non Public B State Tournament with a win over Benedictine Academy on May 22.

Corbett combined with Napolitano for a complete game one-hitter from the mound, and joined Brookman with two hits and two runs apiece in the 10-0 victory. Napolitano and Roch doubled for the

Knights, while Gordon, Knichel and Greenberg added singles to help their team advance to the quarterfinal round. The girls’ season ended with an 11-7 loss to Wardlaw-Hartridge in the Sectional semifinals on May 29.

Golf: Record: 10-7 Season at a Glance: Despite falling 223-229 to Morristown-Beard School at the Twin Oaks Country Club on May 7, medalist honors were earned by Nicholas Baker ’13 with a 39. John William Murphy ’13 (44), Cole Moriarty ’14 (47), Peter Stone ’13 (48) and Carson Ingersoll ’13 (51) also posted scores.

Post-season play began with the NJSIAA State Tournament on May 14, and continued with the Skyland Conference Championships on May 15, the latter of which led the team to its third division crown since 2010.

Taking first with medalist honors at the 18-hole Royce Brook Country Club in Hillsborough, N.J., was Murphy with a 76. Baker finished second with a 78, followed by top-10 scores from Moriarty in sixth (88) and Ingersoll in ninth (97).

Gill ended its season with a third place finish at the Prep B Championships in Hightstown, N.J., on May 16, as Campbell Wentworth-Ping ’13 shot a 77 to tie for fifth in the field of 50.

Varsity Boys’ Tennis: Record: 9-8 Season at a Glance: Hoping to defend its 2012 Non Public B South Sectional title, the varsity boys’ tennis team began the tournament with a 5-0 win over Ranney School in the NJSIAA quarterfinals on May 14. The second doubles squad of Bryce Neville ’14 and William Conlan ’16 led the way with a 6-2, 6-1 VARSITY BOYS’ TENNIS William Conlan ’16. victory over the Panthers.

Gill advanced to the sectional finals with a 3-2 win over the tournament’s top seed, Moorestown Friends School, on May 16. Crucial points were earned by singles players Carlson Brown ’14 (6-0, 6-2) and Alexander Rowe ’13 (6-3, 6-2), as well as by Kyle Williams ’14 and Ryan Osterman ’13 at first doubles (6-2, 6-1).

The boys claimed the 2013 Sectional Championship with a 3-2 win over Rutgers Prep on May 20. Both Rowe (6-2, 6-2) and Marc Orazietti ’16 (6-1, 6-4) triumphed at second and third singles. Meanwhile, Osterman and Williams were victorious at second doubles as they finished 6-2, 6-1 to give the Knights their second consecutive title.

Varsity Track & Field: Season at a Glance: The girls’ squad had a fine showing at the Somerset County Track and Field Championships on May 8. Leading her team to an overall 10th place finish was Dana Klein ’14, who took runner-up and set a new school record (5:00) in the 1600m. Alexandria Benoit ’14 earned third in the 800m (2:24), followed by Emily Iannaconi ’13 who took 12th with a time of 2:30.

Stellar performances were also seen by Emily Quinn ’13 (7th/3200m/11:16) and the 4x400 relay squad of Benoit, Iannaconi, Quinn and Klein (9th/4:22). In the field, Armani Comick ’15 posted top-20 marks in three

events—the shot put (28’7”), discus (77’11”) and long jump (13’10”)—while Ludi Zhu ’16 finished one spot away from scoring in the long jump (14’10”).

Brian Steck ’13 and Patrik Andersen ’15 led the boys to an overall 11th place finish as they took fourth (4:27) and fifth (4:30) in the 1600m. Both Steck and Andersen joined Thomas Troxell ’13 and Svetozar Brankov ’13 for eighth (3:35) in the 4x400 relay as well. Also posting top-20 results in the 400m hurdles (1:01) and javelin (121’2”) were Troxell and Michael Tafaro ’14.

Additional contributors throughout the meet at Hillsborough High School included Michael Iannaconi ’16 (1600m/5:13), Gregory Niccolai ’16 (javelin/112’3”), Andrew Provines ’13 (discus/97’6”), Andrew Wible ’15 (400m/1:01) and Brian Williamson ’13 (shot put/37’7.5”; discus/88’8”).

Steck won the 1600m (4:18) at the Skyland Conference Championships held May 15. Close behind Steck, who also placed fifth in the 800m (1:58), was Andersen with third in the 1600 meter run (4:21). Klein, a runner-up in two events, also set a new school mark (2:17) in the 800 meter run and dropped her previous VARSITY TRACK & FIELD Sahara Ensley ’16.

and third place finishes were secured by Tafaro (2nd/javelin/127’0”) of the boys’ squad, as well as Iannaconi (2nd/1600m/5:28), Benoit (3rd/200m/28.57 seconds) and Comick (3rd/shot put/31’11.25”) of the girls’ squad. Other crucial points came from Benoit (400m/1:04) and Niccolai (javelin/113’4”), as each took fourth in their respective events, and from Zhu (200m/29 seconds; long jump/14’3”) and Provines (discus/101’1”; shot put/33’2”) who rounded-out scoring with fifth and sixth place finishes for the Knights.

Klein took first in both the 800m (2:18) and 1600m (5:02), as well as third in the 3200m (11:59) to help the girls secure a second place team finish at the Non Public B South Track and Field Sectional Championships in Toms River, N.J. Also earning gold throughout the two-day meet between May 24 and 25 was Quinn (3200m/11:18), who medaled with silver in the 1600m (5:12). Additional runners-up included Benoit (400m/1:03; 800m/2:23) and Sahara Ensley ’16 (3200m/11:59). Top-10 times from Iannaconi (800m/2:32; 1600m/5:39), Zhu (long jump/14’3.25”) and Comick (shot put/30’8.25”; discus/89’3”), along with a 20’3” throw from Zoe Quan-Shau ’16 in the shot put (14th), helped guide the girls to their third straight second place team finish.

The boys placed third overall behind two gold medals (800m/1:58; 1600m/4:29) and one fifth place finish (200m/23.7 seconds) from Steck at the Sectional Championships. Trailing just seconds behind with silver in the 800m (2:01) and 1600m (4:30) was Andersen, who also finished runner-up in the 3200m (10:05) and the 4x400 relay alongside Steck, Brankov and Troxell (3:38). Other top-10 contributors in the boys’ best-ever team finish were Troxell (400m hurdles/1:00; 400m/53.3), Brankov (800m /3:11), Provines (discus/30’1”), Jacob Kruger ’15 (3200m/11:29) and Williamson (shot put/34’0”; discus/85’06”). Fine performances were given by Iannaconi (12th/1600m), Wible (14th/400m), Tafaro (12th/javelin) and Niccolai (14th/javelin) as well.

performances at the Non Public B Group Championships held May 31 through June 1. The girls’ squad, which placed fourth overall, was led by Klein with gold medals in both the 800m (2:18) and 1600m (5:07), and a bronze medal in the 3200 meter run (11:33.1).

She was joined by Quinn, a runner-up in the day’s 1600m (5:15) and 3200m (11:33) events, and by Zhu (long jump/15’5.25”) and Benoit (800m/2:24) who finished sixth in each of their respective events. Benoit had a fine showing in the 400m (1:02) and 100m (13.3 seconds) as well, while Iannaconi placed eighth in the 1600m with a time of 5:39. Andersen and Steck earned runner-up in both the 1600m (4:22) and 800m (1:55) to help the boys secure an overall 10th place finish at the meet. Key contributions were also made by Troxell, Williamson and the 4x400 relay squad.

In addition, Olsen, Jenkins, Angelique Norwood ’16, Nita Diverio ’15 and Alexa Hait ’16 chipped in with ground balls, and Matthews made six saves on goal.

While at the MOC in South Plainfield on June 5, Klein finished sixth in the state and broke her own school record (4:53.69) in the 1600m to end the season.

Lacrosse: Season at a Glance: The JV girls’ lacrosse team concluded its inaugural season with games against Watchung Hills Regional High School and Immaculata in early May. The Knights were led on May 7 by Kaila Gong ’15 with all four goals in the 13-4 victory Watchung loss to over Watchung Hills. Goalie Catarina “Caty” Matthews ’16 also made four saves, Kensey Olsen ’14 had three draw controls, and Isabelle Demontigny ’15 and Claire Jenkins ’14 added four ground balls apiece.
