BRONX COLLECTIVE HOUSING // // // //

HOUSING, BRONX, NY FALL 2019 CRITIC: ERIC BUNGE COLLABORATE WITH : HAO CHANG

This housing project intends to create a more direct and intimate relationship between units and collective spaces.

The whole configuration is organized by five courtyards that house five different collective spaces, gallery, senior garden, theater, shared offices and playground.

A variety of unit layouts correspond with and attach to each courtyard, through various interfaces encourage dynamic social interactions among residents.

SOLID & VOID // PUBLIC LIBRARY, CHINATOWN, NYC // SPRING 2019 // CRITIC: EMMETT ZEIFMAN SOLID & VOID is created through a process of stacking found objects. The project explores the spatial qualities and embraces both the process and its consequences.

The intriguing relationships between solid and void, as well as openness and enclosure are embeded in the “unit” I choose to stack. Through the process, both open and enclosed spaces are duplicated, repositioned and rearranged. Consequently, connections are created through a mix of indoor and outdoor spaces which are adapted for library use.

The assembly of the units is accommodated to various library programs. While a Sloped surface of the unit complies with the program of an audi-torium,at the same time, the other surface could form an intriging moment of entrance. Through assembly, the ambiguity embeded in the unit itself could also be translated in the floor plans, and become a series of “rooms” which are not always connected.

03 LIBRARY PROTOTYPE STUDY // GSAPP CORE II // SPRING 2019 // CRITIC: EMMETT ZEIFMAN Library prototype study is a new way of generating architectural forms by building scaleless models of an architectural detail. In this study, I chose a joint detail from the project Musashino Library by Sou Fujimoto, and transformed the detail drawing into a scaleless prototype model. The scaleless model helps us to embrace unexpected architectural forms and explore innovative spatial qualities.

MODEL STUDY // ADR I // FALL 2018 // CRITIC: DANIL NAGY This physical model of Zeitz Mocaa museum explores the creative use of various modeling materials. The structure is made out of uline shipping tubes and the concrete texture is mimicked by sanded foam sheets.

DISASSEMBLY REQUIRED // MANUAL (DESIGN RESEARCH PROJECT) // FALL 2020 // CRITIC: LAURA KURGAN Based on Amazon’s exploitative business model, our project is a manual that guides its warehouse workers to take apart their job site and to rebuild their community with warehouse components.

The story starts in amazon warehouses during covid.

Regardless of the surging death toll in the U.S, Amazon refused to shut down its facilities or to acknowledge the full impact of COVID-19 on its workers; instead, it speeded up its operation, taking advantage of the economic desperation caused by COVID-19 to increase its market power and dominance.

The manual consists of four chapters.

The first chapter explains why the workers should say no to Amazon. We use GIS tools to explain Amazon’s warehouse site selection strategy. By overlapping the warehouse locations with the Social Vulnerability Index, we examine Amazon’s impact on them. The second chapter describes the components of a warehouse and the third chapter provides disassembly instructions.

Lastly, we use the stories of counties to illustrate how to rebuild local communities.

MOBILE RETREAT // RETREAT, TOMKINS COVE, NY // SPRING 2020 // CRITIC: LINDY ROY This quarry operates with several interconnected systems, where an ecological effect produces a unique experience during residents’ stay, while they actively participate in restoring and stabilizing the quarry’s environment. In this retreat project, residency programs include farming, gardening, meditation, hiking, and living. The consequence of each activity helps to restore the site in a different way. Units are a series of deployable structures that are paired with landslide mitigation infrastructures, they can be taken off and reinstalled around the site, in order to gradually populate and restore the entire quarry.

GREENPOINT THEATER // GSAPP TECH IV // FALL 2019 // CRITIC: SARRAH KHAN In this project, we designed and integrated the building systems for a large, versatile theater space in Brooklyn.

We proposed two shifted volumes which contain natually ventilated flexible public spaces, at the same time, create an extension of the park near the site, and optimize views to the river.

TEXTILE WETLAND PARK // GSAPP ATV // SPRING 2020 // CRITIC: EMILY BAUER The project proposes a research and commercial campus which is developed around textile recycling. The site has a deep rooted relationship with the textile industry since the 1920s when garment manufacturers moved from the Manhattan Garment District to this area. Nowadays, many small garment and clothing manufacturers and businesses remain a crucial part of the neighborhood.

Taking advantage of its unique geographic, infrastructural, and economic conditions, this project proposes to integrate the issue of textile recycling and natural wetlands restoration. It proposes to collect, process, and recycle the pre-consumer textile waste from garment manufacturers and the rising fashion industry, as well as post-consumer products collected through existing corporate and non-profit programs.

09 BROADWAY STORIES // GSAPP CORE I // FALL 2018 // CRITIC: EMMETT ZEIFMAN “Courtyards” of 1920s resi-dential blocks are aggregatedspaces divided by property lines and elevation changes.

These spaces can be seen as “the interior” of the city and provided an opportnity to propose cohesive, accessible programmed spaces that would be connected to a larger network of local amenities.

THE WAY THINGS GO // CORE I // FAL 2018 // CRITIC: EMMETT ZEIFMAN This set of drawings captured both ordered and disordered system. Ordered system is when these ordinary objects are carefully and delicately set up,with perfect balance and accuracy.The disordered state drawings expresse when the correlation collapses, and system loses its “meaning”.

In order to show the corelation among objects, a series of reference points are selected from each object, and situated in a coordinate system. While movements being represented by notation, the position of each object is being tracked in the coordinate system.

RIKOLTO HQ // NGO HQ, HANOI, VIETNAM // SPRING 2021 // CRITIC: GALIA SOLOMONOFF The chosen NGO is Rikolto, an international NGO that focuses on agriculture and family farms. The proposed NGO HQ is located within the agricultural area in the red river delta, Hanoi, Vietnam. My proposal is to replace a local cement mill which has been polluting the irrigation water of the neighboring farmland with the new Rikolto headquarter. The project will go through two phases. Phase I requires a phytoremediation process to clean up the site before it’s being put into agricultural use, and phase II of the project will include a bamboo farm and some experimental farmland.

Experimental farmland supports the NGO’s research activities and the bamboo farm will generate revenue covering the NGO’s operation costs and supporting local family farmers.

Cement Waste salinize and alkalize soil. Crops and plants have specific soil PH ranges they prefer.

If the soil pH is outside the plant’s preferred range, it can’t take up nutrient. Depending on the lacking nutrient, the plant can suffer stunted growth, foliage discoloration, or in very extreme cases, death.
