VERSATILE LIVING

(Winner of 2019 Buell Paris Prize) -Housing Design as “In-Between“ (Archived in the 2019 GSAPP “Abstract“ Yearbook) Columbia 2018 Autumn ARCH4002 Architectural Design Core III Location: New York Program: Housing Instructor: Ilias Papageorgiou Group mate: Qi Yang

Fixed Service & Flowing Living The project inverted the traditional method of designing the housing project. Instead of designing several prescriptive units and aggregate them to the architecture, the four fixed housing elements were deisgned first. They are: courtyards as lightwells that bring in the light and view; circulation cores that bring in accessibility; service cores that offer water and electricity; and structural shear walls. Then the space flowing in between this landscape of elements can be divided to become our possible units. The elements are carefully placed in the site with a rhythm so that the circulation cores and service cores can also work as space divider for the interior layout. Through designing this way, every unit is unique and have abundant natural light, service and cross ventilation. Because all the space is with good quality and has necessary service, they are friendly to myriad activities. In that way, the architecture is versatile.

Domestic Scale Pubic Space

Fixed Service & Flowing Living

Large area of public space in the city is facing problems of vandalism and wasting of space. Because of the lack of authority of these large public spaces, people lack of incentive to take care of them. In this project, large public spaces are broken down to smaller communal courtyard spaces that are shared within 4-8 families. People have their own discretion to use the space. The each courtyeards thus have their individual personalities. Some may be used as fruit garden, barbecue park, food growing land, exsercise land etc. Giving authority of the public spaces back to the residents would result better maintainess of the space.

Expanding & Contracting Unit The residents’ need will change over time, we propose the resilient and versatile architecture. The boundary of rooms and units is not fixed, the use of space could achieve its best efficiency. In our proposal, space has no fixed function. All the living space is flowing in between four necessary housing elements: Courtyards as light wells, circulation cores, service cores, and shear walls. The design approach opens myriad possibilities of usage so that we could achieve the best efficiency of the built structure. There is also no prescriptive identical unit in the project, each unit is unique and area of the units can expand or shrink based on 14 changing the family structure.

Optimize Operational Energy Consumption We think the idea of sustainability not only lies in the statistics of the building itself but also in the lifestyle people live. Facing the prevailing culture of consumerism in the US and increasing obesity rate coming with it, we propose the selfsustainable attitude towards living: A lot of things you consume in the architecture comes from the architectural system itself: light, wind, water and food. We encourage people to live close to nature and make use of energy directly from nature, and realize they are limited. We encourage people to walk and to free themselves from the air conditioning. We encourage them to farm and to recycle the waste they produce. We believe through careful architecture design, we can introduce a more sustainable way of living. In that way, the carbon footprint in the community can be reduced by 80%.

Urban Pocket Space The vertical walls create great scale of pocket space for urban environment. The urban circulation interweave with the architecture itself. The architecture is blended into the urban fabric.

Space of Verticality Different from the pancake model, the narrow and high vertical space let people experience the space in its full height. Different thickness of the wall accommodate various activities.

Language as Spatial Experience The notion of “language” is experienced in space through children’s navigation. If the syntax of the space is its physical structure, the semantics of the space is constructed in children’s mind through connecting previous memories when physically moving inside/outside the architecture.

Creating Illusion of interior Distorting spaces create fake perspectives, creating illusion of the interior space

Multiple Usage of Space Spaces of different scale may generate multiple usage of a certain space.

Creating Illusion of Exterior By applying reflective material on the exterior facade, the building is disappearing into the landscape.

64

Blending with Nature The inside and outside is merged to blend nature into the building. A illusion of living outside

Introducing Accidental Light The “Glitch“ effect of the building introduced accidental light into the spaces, day and night is confused.

Sequence of living Spatial sequence is related with the normal habits of space arrangement. By changing the sequence, new living experience is created.

Architecture of Autonomy

The Kaleidoscope

Different methods of creating an alter state through space is generated. These are perspective, scale, glitch(shift), distortion, spatial sequence, and inside&outside relationship. All of them have certain spatial implications that could create effect of sensitization.

The reflected panels reflected the surrounding environment, the building seems like disappearing in certain angles, thus creating confusion looking from the exteriors. Looking at the building, you’ll get an impression of every sides of its surroundings, the building is a kaleidoscope of the site. The building also creates some excitement to the people in Wyoming experiencing routine live.

RUIN TWO FLANKED Program: Bench Objects: Existing Furnitures The ruin is located in the north west of centre Isabel. The owner had left Vieques when one tornado hit the house, destroyed the roof and furniture. Surprisingly, all destroyed mattress, sofa, and other objects and their fragments remained in the building and the broken facade becomes the portal to the history. The facade is changed to street bench for local people.

RUIN FIVE STONE Program: Community Farm Objects: Tool The ruin is located in the south west of center Isabel. The house is made of concrete blocks. The concrete looks like stone after the wash of time. The nature has taken over and blossoms prosper here. Large area of soil besides the house is suitable for a community- size field to grow spice and vegetable for daily need. Accordingly, tools are displayed here.

RUIN SIX SINGULAR Program: Cinema&XR Museum Objects: Toys The ruin is the smallest among the seven ruins. The roof has fell during the hurricane and one of the four walls has been missing, which creates the cinematic effect in the ruin. The surrounding is pretty empty so it has potential to extend and server as more interesting purposes for the community, such as open-air cinema.
