01 REUNION DJERBA

MENZEL REVIVAL STRATEGY IN DJERBA Location: Djerba, Tunisia Academic work, Teamwork, 2020/09 - 2018/12 Teammate: Xianghui Kong; Chaos Chang Instructor: Ziad Jamaleddine PROJECT : Djerba Island, with its Ibadi Muslim minority community, evolved for centuries without a Friday congregation mosque and, consequently, without an urban center. Small scale rural mosques dotted the island’s flat landscape; tightly embedded in the ground, these structures were integrated into Djerba’s compact, rural Menzel settlements. The Menzel, or state, provided a hub around which religious, social, and agricultural components were organized. It was composed of the houche (extended family courtyard house), the ghaba (olive grove fed by a local well), the cistern (including a rain water harvesting basin), and the olive press workshop. This peoject aims at reunting the leocal people of Djerba, attracting the youth back from cities and remodeling the function of mosques and menzels.

AFFORDABLE HOUSING FOR HABRBOR POINT, UTICA Size: 207,000SF, Location: Utica, New York, U.S. Academic work, Teamwork, 2021/01 - 2020/04 Teammate: Spyro Jacobson Instructor: Kate Ascher, Christoph a. Kumpusch, Victor Body-Lawson PROJECT : The Utica Harbor Point Project aims to link the historic inner harbor along the Mohawk River and Erie Canal to the greater ecosystem of Utica, NY. In a three phased approach, the Team will begin Phase A with the development of a Park, Phase B a mixed-use development, and Phase C a residential component. In a joint effort between the public and private worlds, a revitalized Harbor Point will add the wonderful history of Utica, NY. Today, our Development Team is focusing on Phase B, a proposal of 75 affordable housing units, 75 market rate units, and 24,000 SF of pure commercial and residential space. Due to high levels of demand resulting from anticipated growth in population and employment, and planned new developments in the area, the site projects to fulfill a housing need as well as embark on a new urban dimension for Utica’s historic Harbor Point. Through low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC), equity, and debt, the Development Team will look to revitalize the area by developing a new state of the art facility for community members to live, work, and play.

PROTECTION OF JAGUARS' TRANSMISSION ROUTE Location: Santa Cruz River, U.S. & Mexico Academic work, Individual Design, 2021/05 - 2021/08 Instructor: Ersela Kripa, Stephen Mueller PROJECT : ‘Sky islands’S is a project to explore how to create a safe and comfortable migration route for jaguars and try to restore the ecological environment of their habitat.

Before the 1960s, jaguars had perished in the United States. Most leopards lived in the sky islands mountains on the borderland between the United States and Mexico. It was not until recent years that jaguars gradually migrated from Mexico to the United States. In 2014, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service also defined the critical habitat of jaguars in Arizona and New Mexico. But even so, jaguars’ migration still faces many threats. On one hand, we found that jaguars’ migration is mainly concentrated in the Santa Cruz River area, and there are a large number of ranches along the river. Jaguars’ eating cattle will bring them ranchers' revenge. On the other hand, overgrazing has led to the deterioration of jaguars’ habitat environment. Therefore, this project uses a new ‘sky islands’ system to connect the river at the bending area to form an island. In this way, the river itself can protect the cattle from jaguars and stop the ranchers killing them again. On the other hand, on this island, we can use scientific grazing methods and modern technology to reduce the damage to the environment caused by grazing and gradually restore the environment.

Jaguars have been extinct before 1960s in the U.S. However, In 1996, an Arizona hunter encountered something unexpected near the Arizona-New Mexico border.He found himself gazing at a jaguar (Panthera onca). His was the first publicly reported sighting of a jaguar north of the U.S.-Mexico border in over a decade.This sighting came as an ongoing debate was emerging about conservation and protection of jaguar habitat in the United States. Until 2014, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service stipulated a sanctuary for jaguars. But even so, the jaguars still face many threats in these areas. What this project wants to study is what threats the jaguars will face after the delimitation of the critica habitats and how to create a safe and ecological migration route for the jaguars.

1st. Block the Water

The river meet every requirements Jaguars need, which is the Healthy ecosystem and Access to water, but what is unfortunate is that another role in this district also want the same resources, which is the cattle. So how to give jaguars a habitat of rich and free survival become a problem for us. We can start from the two threatens which is Rancher’s Revenge and Environmental damage. Aimed at these two threatens, we can raise the two measures. Firstly to Separate cattle from jaguars and and give jaguars enough space, second is to Protect pasture and water resources. but you will find the ranchers which should be the executors will not help jaguars, they even want to kill jaguars. So if we have to give the ranchers a reason, it should be our binational policy.
