Head of School Dear Alumni and Friends, It was a year of celebrating at Grymes. For anyone who has been a Grizzly, you know there is a lot to cherish and celebrate from our 75 year history – from the first gathering of students in the home of Mrs. Grymes and the breaking of ground for our first building on Spicer’s Mill Road to the development of loved traditions, the many graduations, and the many ways people have generously contributed their talents and treasure to developing and sustaining this special school. In our first assembly of the year, I impressed upon students how extraordinary it is that Grymes has reached seventy-five years by pointing out that our little school is older than McDonalds, Dunkin Donuts, Holiday Inn, Walt Disney Studios, Nike, and the Super Bowl. For more than a few students, it was enlightening to learn that Grymes is even older than Apple, Amazon, and the internet! Even more extraordinary is that Grymes has not just survived over its history. It has thrived, and its impact has been remarkable. One needs only to flip through these pages to see the many ways Grymes students benefit from the broadening and inspiring education they receive in our sheltering halls. And you, our alumni, as you have gone on to follow your dreams in a wide range of pursuits, are proof of the value of a Grymes education, and we could not be more proud. What explains the longevity and success of Grymes? For me, the answer goes back to the school’s beginning. The founders of Grymes launched the school with high ideals and ambitious goals. In Mrs. Norfleet’s famous words, “Every child deserves the best when he is learning to learn.” From the beginning, Grymes teachers and administrators, backed by supportive parents, trustees, and donors, have striven to give our students the best – the best joyful learning, the best character development, the best nurturing, the best support and space that foster creativity, growth, and flourishing. The pictures and stories in this issue of The Grapevine provide a glimpse of the ideals that have brought Grymes through to this historic year. We are grateful to the many people who contributed so much to helping us mark our 75th anniversary, and we hope that you will be as inspired by reading about this important milestone as we have been in celebrating it. The Grymes story continues with great promise for the next seventy-five years. Thank you for your ongoing interest and commitment to your alma mater here in Orange. This year, our engineering club undertook extensive study into the world of drone technology! Guided by science teacher Mrs. Julie Sherman, with help from her husband, Mr. Benjamin Sherman (of 75th aerial photograph fame), students learned about the many roles drones play and the variety of occupations that make use of them. To solidify the point, students worked to construct their own drones and pilot them, beginning outdoors on the soccer field and culminating in the first-ever “Great Grymes Drone Race” held in our gymnasium.
