Message from the Head of School Dear Alumni and Friends, Among the many challenges of the last fourteen months, staying connected with friends and family has been high on the list. How many of us put off visiting grandparents, grandchildren, and other relatives last summer? How often did we experience frustration at the inability to gather in groups for a sporting event or birthday party? Even with the Zoom calls, we all learned first-hand that there is no substitute for faceto-face interactions with the people we hold most dear.

At Grymes we have been fortunate that our campus has been in continuous operation since our opening day on September 8. Even with various health and safety measures in place, students and teachers have gone about the business of teaching and learning in a joyful way. Morning meetings in homerooms, interactive classes, field trips, recess on the playgrounds, trips to the library, SLC, volunteer work, PE and sports practices, bus rides, Ice Cream Fridays, Partner Days, Declamation Days, and other special traditions have made the life of a Grymes student remarkably familiar this year. Teachers and students have stayed connected.

The greater challenge has been keeping up with our alumni and other friends of Grymes. Visits to campus were limited. Our Christmas party could not be held, and our bi-annual gala became a virtual event. We have sorely missed the many occasions when our friends and families come to campus for special events or simply to stop by and connect with teachers and students.

As you will see in this edition of The Grapevine, our alumni have remained undaunted even in the face of a global pandemic. Jenna Faulconer ’14 tells an inspiring story about her time in Australia, and just as we have been creative in adapting to the crisis here in Orange, you will find updates from other alumni who have shown resilience and determination over the past year.

Grymes has been a launching pad for these students, a place where they were nurtured and encouraged to develop the character, skills, and growth mindset needed for challenging situations.

We continue to be proud of you, our Grizzly alumni, and our hope is that you will continue to join us in keeping the Grymes connection strong.

HIGHLIGHTS & HAPPENINGS ADAPTING TO THE TIMES This school year really put Grymes and it’s families, faculty, and staff to the test. Building renovations were made, ionizers were installed, schedules were redesigned, outdoor learning spaces were enhanced, and events were modified. As we approach June with a full year of continuous in-person learning under our belts, it is clear that our hard work paid off. Thanks to teamwork and dedication on all fronts, our students experienced tremendous growth – and a good bit of normalcy, too. There are many highlights to share from the 2020-2021 school year!

SHAKESPEARE Just like many of our Grymes traditional events this year, the annual springtime eighth-grade Shakespeare production was slightly revised.

Instead of a stage performance, the students had the opportunity to work with the talented Mr. Bruce Yauger to make a modern-day Romeo & Juliet film (written by Bruce). Bruce is a Grymes parent and husband to Julie, our seventh-grade homeroom and English teacher.

This was a unique and enjoyable experience for the students. Not only did they receive the honor to work with a film professional, but they had the opportunity for one-on-one direction, flexibility with their character portrayal, and experience with film making. Their production will be something they can keep forever.

Bruce is a professional sound designer and composer with many years of experience in film and theater under his belt. His career has taken him all over the country, a majority of the time landing him in New York theaters. During the filming of Romeo & Juliet, whether he was lying on 100 degree pavement or running at full speed with the students, he did what it took to catch the perfect shot. Bruce is your ultimate “can do” man, and we are so fortunate to have worked with him this spring!

The Split

By Gigi Wiley I wanted her.

I wanted to be her.

I wanted to be with her all the time.

And then we were done.

I can’t do this anymore - she sobs at 3 am No, no, there is nothing you can do- frantic at 6 am And at 9 am we break to refuel We talk little and shovel piles of cheesy eggs and bacon down our throats.

We choke that meal down like it was our feelings.

The clatter of the forks and knives reminds me I am so alone.

A chubby waitress places a glass of juice down and we both reach out.

I knock it off the table and watch a river of orange wind its way down her shirt.

I raise my head to the blue chill of her eyes and ask for the check.

We’re done.

Presentation of Thoughts

by Mason Tallman I trek through the field of thoughts in my brain in search of the speech I wrote the night before.

I push through the rows of math facts growing by my address climb the steps of baking chocolate chip cookies and walk into the presentation of how to do the disappearing coin trick.

I follow the toy that I lost last Christmas into the basement of Grandma’s flooded house where I see Hello leading my speech into the lake where I caught my first catfish and Goodbye following with the life vest I dropped on the boat motor last month.

I dive in the lake and join Luke Skywalker who duals Darth Vader And look, there’s Ms. Frizzle driving the magic school bus.

At last I reach the speech.

I snag it in my net and float back to the current time.

And this is how you start a successful business.

PROFILE PIECES The 8th-grade students studied the profile genre in English class.

Each of them chose a figure to interview and wrote a profile.

Here are three profile pieces. Nora Butterfield interviews Maria Pace, an alum from the class of ’95, Joseph Blundin interviews his grandfather, and Gigi Wiley interviews a local shop owner.

Passion Project

by Nora B. (Grymes 8th Grade)

“I can remember taking our paper and soaking it in the big sink then dipping it into the colors and watching them bleed everywhere, dotting the canvas with autumn leaves.” Even as a young child, Maria Pace was drawn to the poetry of visual images.

Mrs. Emerson, her fourth-grade art teacher, inspired Pace to begin her journey as an artist. She started off the class with watercolors which soon captivated Pace. “In fifth grade Mrs. Emerson allowed us to come to her home on Saturdays to paint and we would do that all through high school. That was the backbone of art for me.”

In her high school, Pace met another wonderful art teacher named Mr. Nickson who taught her perspective painting and a foundation of drawing anatomy; these were concepts that Mrs. Emerson didn’t touch on in her class. That was the extent of Pace’s formal training, along with one other course in college.

Pace reflects, “I wanted to be a writer, that’s why I went to graduate school. While I was in Ireland working on my master’s degree, in my free time I would paint, and that was something I would always come back to.” When you’re a writer it could take months to years to invent a story, then in the middle, you might suddenly hate it and stop. With art though, Pace could draw, look back the next day, and instantly know whether she liked it or not — and inspiration was everywhere.

Maria Pace’s inspiration, then and now, comes mainly from nature, which you can see reflected in her artwork. She explains, “Say you go on a walk and encounter a feather or a butterfly wing along the way. It gives you a little spark of happiness and you would like to capture it in some way so you can spend more time with that beauty. Sometimes it falls flat, but other times, painting it gives you the same sense of happiness as the object itself. Then you can share that feeling by giving it as a card or hanging it up on your fridge.

That is what inspires me to draw.”

Pace knew that she loved creating and making things. She soon realized that art was the path that she wanted to walk down in a professional sense. Pace rented an area to open a shop where she could sell her creations. She sold cards, cloth, pillowcases, sachets, and she put out new merchandise to entice customers. She confides, “In my experience, if a person has an interest in something and they have a little love for it in their heart, then they don’t really need much more than that passion to achieve their goals.”

Although Maria Pace has closed her shop for the time being to care for her young children, she has hopes to reopen soon with the help of her sister. The little ones take up much of her time but they have also inspired her to take new and different approaches to her artwork. “If you think about life, and Mt. Everest’s summit is your goal, all you focus on is getting there. But when you think about all the experiences and people you meet along the way, that’s the beauty of life because once you reach your end goal you realize it’s those little moments that make victory all the better.”

The Life of a Doctor

by Joseph B. (Grymes 8th Grade)

Dr. Ashley Futral has enjoyed an impressive career in medicine. He notes, “When you’re a doctor, you might get tired but you will never get bored.” He says that you have to be organized, and if you’re not already a hard worker, you will have to learn to develop a good work ethic. In his opinion, those are the two main ingredients to becoming a successful doctor.

Futral’s background prepared him for the rigors of the medical field. When he was a young boy, his father pushed him to be a better person, however, his father wasn’t always around. One day, December 7, 1941, his father who was an army officer, was chopping wood in his backyard. While he was chopping wood he was listening to the radio. Everything was going well until a siren blared on the radio; a serious voice announced the bombing of Pearl Harbor. Ashley’s father listened, put down his ax, packed some clothes, and left for World War II. Futral confides that his father didn’t believe in his ability to become a doctor. He thought he wasn’t smart enough. Futral had considered other options; when he was a young boy, he had wanted to become a wild cowboy of the west, or maybe a brave soldier like his father. In retrospect, he realizes that “I did always want to become a doctor but most of all I wanted to prove my father wrong.” Like a typical parent of that era, his father had challenged him as a child. He didn’t mean harm, he just wanted him to become the best man he could be.

One of the main reasons Futral became a doctor was because he wanted to give back to the community and help others.

Becoming a doctor also meant good pay, but he said, “Money hasn’t been hugely important to me.”

Futral explained that one of the hardest things about medical school was the curriculum. Becoming a doctor wasn’t just learning about medicine, he had to concentrate hard and retain a lot of knowledge in his head. The pressure to make excellent grades all the time and retain knowledge was a big obstacle. He had to give up a lot of things too. “I didn’t have much of a social life,” says Futral.

When he started medical school, many of his classmates were veterans of the Korean War and were more mature. That meant that Futral who was only twenty had to mature faster than everybody else.

Before he graduated, Futral had the good luck to meet a nurse named Betty. “Marrying Betty was one of the best decisions I have ever made,” Futral says. They raised four children and enjoyed a good life in Winchester, Virginia. “Practicing medicine was never a true negative, except for all the time it consumed,” Futral remembered and having a wife who understood was a blessing.

“Medicine was a lot simpler back in the old days,” he reflects. There was not a lot they could work with, for example, there were no cat scans and not a wide span of drugs to treat different illnesses like we have today. But that also meant that there were better relationships between the community and doctors. If you were poor you likely had to deal with more issues than other people, so having a good relationship with your doctor was key. Being a doctor in the 1950s was depressing at times, so they relied on humor to get through the days and to help patients deal with tough medical situations.

One of the major impacts Futral made on medicine was the creation of Code Blue at the University of Virginia and Winchester Memorial Hospitals. Code Blue is a trained response for the medical staff when a patient experiences a cardiac arrest which is a serious medical emergency. Code Blue was a huge turnaround for medicine. Medical teams all over the United States adopted it because it was a quick response to a life-threatening situation. It saved countless patient lives. Ashley also has a serious and humble manner. “I tried using my own behavior to influence younger practitioners,” he relays. “Concentrate on the care of the patient and it will all work out.”

Futral said that being a good doctor also means “You must never put your ego in front of saving lives, nor must you think you will be perfect at being a doctor because there is always room to improve,” Futral stated. “You also need to learn humility as well as kindness. Being a doctor is a tremendous responsibility and if you are not happy while practicing, you need to find another job.”

Ashley Futral worked hard to become an excellent doctor. He loved the challenge of it all and relished the journey. Futral reminisces, “I loved every aspect of my practice from start to finish, but I do wish I could have studied cardiology a little bit longer.”

Other than that, he has no regrets. “You have to realize that God has created a remarkable human body. The idea that it can heal itself is fascinating. The only thing doctors should do is help the process in which the human body heals itself.”

When Every Day is a “Holladay”

The door to Laurie Holladay’s Shop opens and a new customer wanders in for a treat. Her tentative expression becomes enthused as she surveys the quirky but sophisticated offerings. Lamps of all different shapes and sizes spread a cheery glow in every corner and illuminate animal bookends, whimsical pillows, unique pins, and perfect gifts. There is only one thing that rivals the cheeriness of this store and that is the owner herself.

It’s nine o’clock on this particular Thursday morning as customers flood into the shop, each one on the heels of the next. Some come for lamp repairs, others want PJs and pillows. Rain holds over the shop, heavy and still. The raindrops splatter on the wet sidewalk, a counterpoint to the staccato bursts of conversation in the cozy shop.

Holladay’s face lights up as she admires her wrapping job on a newly bought gift. Holladay’s brunette hair is held loosely by a bumblebee clip. Her tortoiseshell glasses sit high on her nose as she proceeds with her business.“Oh my! How exquisite! The beige will go perfectly with my new floors!” exclaims a customer. Holladay beams and clears wrapping paper off her register to greet more customers. “So glad it worked out. It’s going to look great Francis!” The rain outside may have been responsible for some of the extra traffic, but it’s the sunshine in the store that keeps them shopping.

“What I love about Laurie is how excited she gets when showing you items in her store. She has thought about the items in such a way that just makes you want to buy them,” states a loyal customer. Big-ticket items or small gifts, the size of the sale doesn’t matter as Holladay always gets joy out of what she does.

She and her mom had always liked the design and the art world. Holladay grew up in Princeton often helping with the seventyfive year old family business. Her father owned and ran a high-end interior design shop. By working in the shop on weekends, she picked up on the ins and outs of dealing with customers.

While in high school she worked in New York City for an importing business that specialized in Chinese porcelain and antiques.

“Opportunities just have a way of presenting themselves,” states Holladay. During the first two years of college, she minored in art history and fine arts. Other stops along the way included stints at a Monticello gift shop and a framing shop. All of these jobs eventually led to her interior design shop in Gordonsville.

The shop in Gordonsville continues the tradition of the family business. She works with her husband Jim Holladay who takes care of the finances, bookkeeping, and also handles lamp repair and design in his workshop. For her part Holladay designs the shop, picks out the merchandise and, of course, helps the customers. As one could imagine, Holladay’s job has many different aspects. The trips to N.Y, Atlanta, and High Point, NC every year to pick out merchandise are a favorite part of her work year.

Holladay never has a set schedule, rather each day dictates what needs to be done. There is no “typical day” as each day is different. “ I love doing this, and I love working with people,” she states. Holiday asserts she has no bad days; she only encounters small mishaps that she doesn’t let ruin the day.

Another secret to the shop’s success may be offering an everyday service along with items for sale. Imagine your lamp is broken...

You head into Holladay’s shop for a repair; turns out when you walk in you decide upon a whole new design for the lampshade.

This is a smart and successful way to draw in more customers. Holladay’s shop offers a combination of different services for each individual person.

“I give it my best all the time, it’s my thing,” she states. Holladay not only has a strong work ethic but is a very positive person.

Nothing strikes her as something she can’t do, it’s all just a fun challenge. Holladay is quick to adapt and can multitask without a thought. Whether it’s a personally wrapped gift or an individually picked out lampshade, customers are her biggest priority. And no matter what the problem, Holladay always knows how to handle it.

One busy day a couple of years ago Holladay’s shop was packed with employees and customers. Every which way was wrapping and boxing and the phone ringing. An elderly lady had come up to the counter in front of everyone and wondered aloud, “How can you stand this?” A soft smile crosses Holladay’s face, as she shares this story. I told her, “I love this, it’s so exciting.”

Later on that rainy day, two little boys come into the shop, one in the stroller and the other hiding behind his mother. The smaller one whimpers as the older one snoops around to find something to play with. Most shop owners would have been on high alert. Holladay quickly finishes her phone conversation. “I ordered the beige one from England. It should be here in a few weeks. Good to talk to you Nancy, hope the kids are well,” the cheery owner says. She puts her phone down and turns to her new customers. A huge smile comes across Holiday’s face as she sees the two boys. “Welcome to the Laurie Holladay Shop! So happy to see you! How can I help you?” Both of the little boys look up at her and grin. Even they can tell she means it.

WEATHERING THE PANDEMIC IN AUSTRALIA JENNA FAULCONER ‘14 Hey, Grapevine Readers!

I’m back from my travels abroad with a few stories up my sleeve.

First things first, the devastating Australian fires of early 2020 almost burned down the Brisbane airport I was scheduled to fly into from L.A. In the days leading up to my departure from Dulles International, my phone was pinging with emergency alerts from the Australian Government every six hours, and I figured it was only a matter of time before the UNCW Study Abroad Program pulled the plug on my trip. They never called me, though, and on February 10th I was hugging my parents goodbye in the wee hours of the morning with a suitcase, carry-on, and backpack in hand.

Aside from that, my time abroad started off smoothly. I liked my flat mates, all of whom were international like me, except for one lone Melbournian. Orientation Week involved lots of exciting and school-focused meet-and-greets during the day, and just as many fun-focused gatherings in the evenings. I joined the zoology club and went on night walks looking for bats, geckos, 24

and tree-hopping marsupials. I competed in an intramural swim meet, representing Rotary Hall.

Rotary’s three-girls-strong team placed SECOND overall against five other teams that were at least ten girls strong.

My favorite place to go to alone was Magnetic Island. The hiking trails were incredible. One trail took me on a tour through WWII ruins in a eucalyptus forest. I could see wild koalas napping in the trees if I was patient enough to look for them.

Another trail took me halfway across the island to Geoffrey Bay where rock wallabies hopped about and the Coral Sea turned into an ideal snorkeling cove.

All good things must come to an end, though, and the end came in the form of the COVID-19 global pandemic. Just four weeks into class, everything was switched to fully virtual. The city locked down.

Borders shut. Toilet paper disappeared from the store shelves. Restrictions wouldn’t allow more than two people in a single car and no one could leave a 40km radius from their residential address. continued on next page

I got an email from the Chancellor of UNCW on a Sunday afternoon saying that I had to be on American soil by the coming Thursday or else.

After the obligatory “panicked phone call home crying,” I shot an email back to UNCW explaining why I would not be entering an airport under any circumstances and would indeed stay in Townsville whether they liked it or not. Within twelve hours, I was signing virtual documents releasing UNCW of any and all responsibility for my well-being and potentially the rights to claim transfer credits towards my degree. It wasn’t long before my flat mate, Cass (the Melbournian), and I were waving goodbye to many of the other international students who weren’t as lucky as me as we sipped our morning coffees.

After firmly establishing my roots in Townsville soil for the beginning of the pandemic, I entered an intense period of personal recalibration.

Everything had changed. There weren’t going to be any more trips to Magnetic Island (that required getting on public transportation). No more budding friendships with classmates. No more future plans to go skiing down south with Cass and her mates. I didn’t even know if I was going to be able to return to Orange in July.

I sat down with my two flat mates and by then best friends in the whole country, Sandy and Cass, and we established a group routine to help each other maintain our sanity as we weathered the pandemic together. Our days revolved around communal meals, online classes, and movies every night. To release the pressures of cabin fever, Cass and I also began hiking the trails of nearby parks that didn’t violate our lockdown. We conquered

Castle Hill, which has an incredible view of the Ross River meandering through the entire city. We explored Alligator Creek, home to one “friendly” freshwater crocodile and several brumbies (wild horses). And we swam in the blue-green mineral pools of Cardwell, surrounded by pine forests.

Paluma Range National Park was probably my favorite. Exploring the jungles of the oldest rainforest on the face of the planet gave me the sense that around every bend and turn there was a very good chance a velociraptor could be lying in wait. The real danger was in territorial emus and venomous snakes, though. Cass and I had a close brush with a red-bellied black snake soaking up the sun in the middle of the trail between us and home, on our way back from eating lunch along the edge of a particularly majestic waterfall. Thankfully, the day was cool, the snake was lethargic, and we eventually made it home with life and limb firmly intact.

Online classes ended in mid-June, and I had (finally) secured a ticket home for early July. Cass and I eagerly planned a COVID-safe road trip to the Whitsundays to reward ourselves for a semester well-done. Events were temporarily delayed after an unexpected stay in the Townsville Hospital following finals, but we eventually pulled onto A1 South with high spirits, nonetheless.

I was personally determined to get on a boat to snorkel the Great Barrier Reef before I came home. Three previous bookings had already been cancelled due to inclement weather, so I wasn’t going to take “no” for an answer. As we were driving to the marina, excited to finally see The Reef, I got

a call. Storms were in the afternoon forecast and our boat would not be running that day. Unwilling to be crushed by the cancellation, I instructed Cass to keep driving and started making phone calls. I found a boat called the ThunderCat, and a woman on the phone happily told me there were still two seats available for the day tour to the GBR. We booked them and within the hour were getting fitted for wet suits in the marina parking lot. The surf was rough and we got rained on, but it was worth every second to be able to see the legendary coral of the Great Barrier Reef with my own eyes.

Other highlights of our trip included • Finding the best meat pies at Prossy Pies, an hour inland in the town of Proserpine • Spontaneously buying mud crabs from a man’s backyard and boiling them on a camp stove • Getting Thai massages • Running across wild boars on a trail and realizing neither of us had any experience protecting ourselves against feral animals • Camping on Lake Proserpine and waking up to a large cow ambling past our clothesline I had a great last week in Queensland, but I was also ready to come home. However, I couldn’t escape the pandemic, and traveling to the United States felt a lot like entering the belly of the beast.

A home in crisis was still a home worth returning to, though, and I was determined to see my family.

Once safely in Orange, I decided to continue with online classes and stay at home; however, one semester of being a fully virtual student was enough for me to realize that I prefer learning in person, so I’m now taking a gap semester from school and plan on returning to Wilmington in the fall of 2021.

In the meantime, I have taken the plunge on a childhood dream and bought a 16-foot pullbehind Scamp camper, which I intend to live out of once the weather gets a little warmer. I am also volunteering my time organizing online community events with the grassroots group Just Orange and have taken up birdwatching as well. I’m currently in the process of applying for several summer internships in the Chesapeake Bay related to coastal and oyster restoration.

Andrew Garnett ‘11 - After graduating from Woodberry Forest in 2015, Andrew attended The University of South Carolina and graduated magna cum laude in 2019. He is now working in New York City as a retail real estate associate with SCG-Retail, the Manhattan division of The Shopping Center Group, a commercial real estate firm. In Andrew’s words, “Grymes taught me to work hard to achieve my goals. I credit my Grymes experience, especially Marcy Wagner and Julie Sherman, for helping me develop the tools necessary for success.”

After graduating from Grymes in 2000, Mac attended EHS for high school, then the University of Georgia for college. Once he graduated in 2008, he traveled to China to teach English. While living in China, he not only learned about its culture, but he met his wife. He, his wife, and two daughters now live in Texas. We loved having Mac step in and teach a class based on his life experiences!

Lawrence recently visited the school to donate a generous amount of art supplies that belonged to his father.

Lawrence Altaffer ’96 is now living back in Richmond, Virginia, with his wife, Leslie, and first child, also named Lawrence (L5). He works for Capital One as a Design Director leading several digital product design teams.

Lawrence came back to Virginia after some time in Washington D.C. and Los Angeles, where he met his wife.

He was lucky enough to work with Bono’s non-profit organizations The One Campaign and Live 8 in 2005, as well as Saatchi & Saatchi LA, working on all of Toyota’s digital projects. His passion for art and design and technology were supported at Grymes, and he fondly remembers getting to play in the computer lab and express his artistic interests in art classes. He even won the photography contest in 1996. Lawrence loves to balance his time between his family, hunting and fishing, and exploring the edges of technology and design.

hen my godparents John and Lynelle Lawrence, owners of Mudhouse Coffee in Charlottesville, first told me about the coffee that sold for $1,000 a pound, my first question was, “What makes it worth that much?”

My second question was, “Y’all got any?”

They didn’t. But the first question didn’t have such a straight-forward answer. Why did Elida Geisha Natural ASD Torre, a 100-pound lot of unroasted Panamanian coffee from world-renowned producer Wilford Lamastus, net $102,900 at the 2019 Best of Panama coffee auction? Dozens of articles from the likes of Forbes and the BBC point to the “delicate floral” and “deeply complex” flavors of Geisha, the variety known as the “King of Coffee,” or to more emphatic reviewers, “God in a Cup,” but personally, I couldn’t grasp how “delicate florality” and other jargonized qualities could draw such unbelievable prices.

My name is Rhew Deigl. I’m an 18-yearold Orange County native, semi-professional barista, and fully un-professional newspaper columnist. I’ve come to Elida Estate, a 160-acre specialty coffee farm on Volcán Barú, in the province Chiriqí, Panamá to live and study with Wilford Lamastus and to find out what exactly goes into the production of his prized coffee.

My interest in coffee was sparked four years ago when I visited a small producer in Estelí, Nicaragua, and since then I’ve graduated from casual home brewer to Mudhouse barista to whatever you can call my job now. I don’t have a good name for it yet; I interact with coffee at every stage of its production. Upon my arrival at the farm around 6:45 a.m., I help load the previous day’s harvest for transportation (up to 14,000 pounds of red coffee fruits, called cherries, each morning), score coffees in the daily “cupping” (either the science or the art of evaluative coffee tasting, depending on who you ask), help with farm tours, and work the coffee bar. Wilford has generously embraced me as an apprentice; specialty coffee is his passion, and he takes every opportunity to share it with me.

“Specialty coffee” refers to a crop of beans that lacks physical damage, “presents in the cup free of faults and taints,

However, it’s often used loosely to describe any “good” or, more truthfully, expensive coffee. Elida Estate produces true specialty coffee of the highest order, as assessed by the Specialty Coffee Association’s international judges.

The estate was founded in 1918 by Kentuckian expatriate Robert Lamastus and his wife, Elida, but only through the work of his son, Thatcher, and grandsons, Wilford and Luito, did it explode to the forefront of Geisha coffee production.

There are many varieties of Coffea arabica, each with its own flavors, but only two are produced at Elida: Catuai and Geisha, the most coveted among coffee fanatics. While each variety carries certain flavor characteristics, the final taste is significantly affected by the plant’s growing conditions.

Wilford takes extreme pride in the weather of the Volcán Barú region. Every morning as we drive up to the farm, he teaches me what to look for. “See these clouds to the north? It must have snowed in your home-town… in Ver-hee-nee-a,” he’ll say, looking over at me with the fullfaced grin he always gets when talking about clouds. He largely attributes the quality of his coffee to the quirks in climate here.

This region is unique because it experiences the moderating effects of both the Caribbean Sea 30 miles due north and the Pacific Ocean 40 miles due south. The volcano and its surrounding ridgelines explode out of the southern costal flatlands like the Sierra Nevada out of Owens Valley, creating spastic weather patterns.

Temperatures rapidly drop as the elevation rises from 1,000 to 8,200 feet above sea level at the highest point of Elida Estate.

This chilly, cloudy climate benefits coffee quality by forcing the plants to fruit more slowly, resulting in a sweeter, more developed cup.

The estate is divided into nine lots based on elevation and variety, the most important being Torre and Aguacate, two Geisha lots that extend from 5,900 to 6,500 feet above sea level, the highest that coffee can be grown reliably. It was from Torre that the world-famous $1,029 per- pound lot came in the spring of 2019.

So what was it about that lot that allowed Wilford to shatter the record (his own, in fact) for most expensive coffee ever? While we can try to explain the origin of its flavor with its variety (Geisha), growing locale (Torre, 6,500 ft), and fermentation process (Anaerobic Slow Dry, basically sitting in a sealed barrel for a week), there is something missing from this explanation. $102,900 for 100 pounds of coffee. I often have to remind myself how ridiculous this figure is. Klatch Coffee in Los Angeles acquired 10 pounds and sold it for $75 a cup. That’s around 70 cents a bean. Why did people buy that? Is it in the science, the art, the culture? What about those things creates value? What creates quality? Over the next five months, that is what I’ll attempt to find out, and what I’ll attempt to relay through writing; though I fear the answer might overwhelm my ability to explain, or that it beggars explanation altogether. We’ll see.

Spencer Goodwin ‘12 – Spencer graduated from Virginia Tech this spring. During his senior year, he assisted in building a race car at school with his mechanical engineering team. He then had the opportunity to be one of the drivers for a 12-hour endurance race at the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

He has been practicing law for over forty years in Culpeper where he grew up and lives now. Bob has a wife, Ann, and two children, Bo and Anna. Bo also went to Woodberry.

Bob remembers his time at Grymes fondly. Even in just three years, he made lifelong friends that he still enjoys keeping in touch with. He remembers coming in as a sixth-grader, which could be a hard time to enter a school, but being completely accepted and welcomed.

He claims that while the experiences, friends, and academics were all spectacular, he particularly remembers the teachers and the love and commitment that they shared with their students. Bob was recently a valuable member of the Grymes Strategic Planning Committee. Grymes was thrilled to have him back on campus after too long!

Maggie Hill Butler ‘91 - After Grymes Maggie Hill Butler attended Madison County High school and then graduated from James Madison University. She moved to Hampstead, NC, and currently lives there with her husband, Zach Butler, and two daughters, Sadie and Colleen. Maggie works as an Environmental Compliance Supervisor for Wilmington’s public water and sewer company. This past year she adjusted to working some from home but managed to continue with some normal activities, such as watching her daughters play volleyball. She and her family love spending time at the beach, and Maggie really enjoys it when her sister, Sallie Hill Outten ‘94, and nephew Will come to visit.

Wilson Ruotolo ‘08 - Wilson successfully defended his Ph.D. thesis, entitled Design Principles for Manipulation with Astrictive Contact, which involved the creation of several different robotic hands through the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Stanford University. Funding was provided by the National Science Foundation and the Toyota Robotic Institute.

Farewell, Teresa!

Teresa Eick, our beloved reading specialist, is retiring at the end of the 2020-2021 school year.

Teresa’s gentle, reassuring teaching has helped numerous students at Grymes. She has given them the strategies and confidence to build their reading ability and then, in turn, the gift of a lifelong love of reading. She has done amazing work and has always done so in a quiet, reassuring manner.

As my son Aidan finished third grade, it became apparent that he was struggling with reading. Tim and I had him go through educational testing, and it was confirmed that he had dyslexia. As his parents, we were very concerned about what this might mean for him and his future at Grymes and beyond. Enter Teresa Eick into our lives! The first time that Aidan met Teresa she was wearing a T-shirt about dyslexia. From that very moment, she gained the trust of Aidan and helped him to build his confidence and overcome his anxiety about reading. I credit her and her gentle way of bringing Aidan to his full potential. She made him realize that dyslexia was just a different way of learning and it was okay to be different. I know that Teresa has done this same very thing for many students at Grymes. She treats all students as if they were her own children. Teresa creates a personal relationship with her students, and when a student is cared for at that level, the results are astounding!

Not only has Teresa brightened the days of her students, but she has been the driving force behind the Sunshine Committee. Whether it was a little treat in our faculty box or a well-stocked selection of coffee, Teresa has brought a smile to many faculty faces. She also started Secret Pals among the faculty and staff. We are all like a bunch of happy JKer’s looking forward to what our pals have brought us throughout the year.

Teresa’s classroom has been a welcoming and inviting space to unlock the potential of many of our students.

Teresa is a superhero in my book, and we have been blessed to have her a part of the Grymes family. When I told Aidan that Teresa was retiring, he said, “Mom, Mrs. Eick is such an amazing person, and I can never thank her enough for everything she helped me achieve.” I believe we all agree with that statement.

We all wish Teresa the best in her retirement and hope that she spends many days at the beach enjoying the surf and sand. — Tracey Stakem

Farewell, Polly!

I met Polly Johnson at the Grymes Auction the spring before she joined the faculty. I remember thinking that she had a warm smile and she laughed easily. In the fall of 2014, she became the fourth grade homeroom teacher and our children became third grade classmates.

As partner class pair teachers, we worked together throughout the year to support the relationships between her students, 4th graders, and my students, Junior Kindergarteners. I learned that Polly had rich experience teaching on the early end of early childhood education and became a rich resource for me as I worked to enhance the curriculum of my program.

In 2015, Polly became more than a colleague, she became my youngest daughter’s teacher. As a colleague, I knew I respected Polly as an educator, but having her teach my daughter showed me even more of her commitment to excellence for herself and her students. I appreciated her creativity, organization, clear and challenging expectations, and communication to families. Her binder full of emergency substitute plans became the gold standard for all teachers at Grymes to have on their shelf. Polly really has a gift for creating systems that work. My daughter and her friend wrote this poem (unprompted) for Polly and it still hangs in her classroom today: My respect for Polly grew even more when she and the second and third grade teachers took the summer to look at the social studies curriculum for each grade to make certain that they were not continuing to teach the same pieces of history year after year. This curriculum work and the curriculum guides they created also became the standard for teachers at Grymes.

Polly’s passion for geography is personal and professional. Her students not only read books about the Appalachian Trail, and studied it on a map, but they took a field trip to hike a part of it. This is one of the best examples I can think of to share the ways that Polly makes the learning real for her students.

We have benefited from having Polly as a part of our community and we will miss her easy laugh and her excellent teaching. Polly has made contributions to our school that will endure and we wish her all the best in her next endeavor. — Kimber Keating

Farewell, Marcy!

Marcy Wagner - How on earth can you capture in just a few sentences all the wonderful things that Marcy has done during her nineteen years at Grymes?

Marcy came to Grymes from Richmond during Ben Whitman’s headship to teach fourth grade. She quickly captured her students’ hearts. The first time I ever met Marcy, I was being interviewed as Tom Short’s successor as Head of School. The fourth grade play was part of my first day-long visit to Grymes. Marcy was dressed in denim overalls and a straw hat, about eight months pregnant with her daughter, Grace. Her face was full of the light, enthusiasm, and positive spirit that were her trademarks as she crouched in front of the stage, coaching her class through their class play that was full of awful puns and great word play . . . also one of her trademarks!

Over the years, Marcy’s energy and creativity never ceased to amaze me. After Grace’s birth, Marcy returned from maternity leave with Grace in tow and tackled a new challenge as Director of Development. She published the Grymes Times in a glossy, full color format for the first time, she spear-headed many successful annual fund drives, and she organized beautiful special events like the 60th Grymes Birthday celebration.

Soon, though, Grace was old enough to become a JK student, and Marcy was eager to return to the classroom.

She returned to fourth grade, bubbling with new ideas and energy. Her geography classes took the whole school outside for a “hike” through the states along the Appalachian Trail. They sold “Bluebells for School Bells,” raising money for a school in Africa by selling bluebell plants that the class had grown. Another year, her students planted hundreds of daffodil bulbs across the campus and in the spring picked and sold the daffodils to raise money for digging wells in African villages. She and I had the privilege of traveling with two students to the Galapagos Islands on a National Geographic expedition as she gathered first-hand experience for those geography classes. For many years, she led the Garden Club. Her love of gardening and her passion for environmental stewardship needed an outlet!

Next, she taught fifth grade, bringing the same passionate creativity to Ancient and Medieval History.

Then, she moved up to sixth grade, imparting her love of literature through language arts classes and also teaching seventh grade science. And did I mention tennis? An avid tennis player herself, she even taught the Wednesday after-school tennis club.

Marcy has that magical combination found in the very best teachers of great intellectual energy, the highest standards for both her students and herself, and, perhaps most importantly, a deep empathy and love for every single child she teaches.

Ever restless in her search for new challenges, Marcy is leaving Grymes and leaving behind some very large shoes to fill. She will be sorely missed. Good luck and Godspeed, dear Marcy! — Elisabeth P. Work

Farewell, Carolyn!

Carolyn Herndon – Almost 41 years ago, In the summer of 1980, a shy, flaxen-haired four-year-old cautiously held her mother’s hand as she made her way to the kindergarten classroom at Orange Elementary School to meet her teacher for the first time. That teacher was Carolyn Herndon. That student was me. That day transformed me from a child who had never been away from home into one who was eager to join the class in the fall. Dubbed “The Child Whisperer” by many, Carolyn’s calm and caring demeanor and gentle way of speaking provided instant reassurance that gave me the comfort to embark fearlessly into a lifetime of learning.

Fast-forward to 2004. I reunited with Carolyn, this time as a colleague, as the tables turned and I got to be HER teacher as a part of our technology faculty development program. It brought me great joy to see that things in the kindergarten building were just as I had remembered. The letter people welcomed me into her classroom as smells of finger-paint and happiness permeated the air. It was so much fun to be able to guide Carolyn through learning some new skills, just as she had done for me so many years before.

Fast forward to 2013. I had just finished my third year of working for Grymes when we received the news that Carolyn would be retiring from the public schools to join us as the new kindergarten teacher. Reunited again! I’ll never forget the birthday gift she presented to me after that school year began… a piece of my yarn artwork from 1980 she had found tucked away when emptying her old classroom of over 30 years of memories. Paired with a heartfelt note from Carolyn, it was a priceless gift that touched me greatly.

Over the past 8 years, you’ve hatched multiple groups of chicks. You’ve given your students amazing field trips. You’ve released beautiful butterflies. You’ve successfully produced beautiful class plays, debuted the declamation careers of countless students and awarded beautiful garden-themed tributes to your students each awards day. You’ve even re-learned handwriting, D’nealian style! You’ve touched so many lives in so many unforgettable ways.

Sharing recess duty this year has afforded me the opportunity to listen to stories about your early years as a young Navy wife, hear about the adventures of your sweet father, and appreciate your love for your daughter and her beautiful family, as well as enjoy anecdotes about your students past and present. One thing that is clear about you, Carolyn, is that you treasure the relationships and memories with the people you love more than anything. Everyone says this about you (and I know it is true…): “Carolyn Herndon never forgets a student” and, rest assured, your students will never forget you!

On behalf of Grymes and everyone who loves you, best wishes for a wonderful retirement filled with opportunities for memories yet to be made! In Memoriam Jennifer Thornburrow Hulsey (1971 - 2021) For seven years, Jennifer Hulsey brightened our days and contributed to Grymes in extraordinary ways. The mother of an alumnus and a current student, Jennifer loved our little school, and we will long be grateful for her service to Grymes.

Jennifer’s volunteer work at Grymes knew no bounds. Jennifer served as our GPTA President. She was a member of the Head of School Search Committee three years ago. She played a central role on the Steering Committee for our strategic planning last year. Most recently, she served as the Vice Chair of our Board of Trustees and chaired the Trusteeship Committee. As a volunteer, Jennifer could be counted on to be the first to show up and the last to leave, and there was no job too big or too small for her. Whether assisting with a class party or addressing a strategic issue at the board level, Jennifer served with devotion.

Jennifer, together with her husband, Byron, helped to strengthen the important relationship between Grymes and Woodberry Forest School. She graciously hosted Grymes events on the Woodberry campus, even sharing her family’s private home with us, and she served as a kind of ambassador to Woodberry on behalf of Grymes.

She recognized the mutual benefit that this relationship fostered and how our common goals could be advanced by working together.

Her warmth and authenticity came through even in brief or casual conversations, and she had a special way of making everyone feel comfortable in her presence. In all that she did, Jennifer exuded a quiet peace, abiding joy, and irrepressible cheerfulness.

Although her passing this spring after a long battle with cancer has filled us with deep sorrow, we are grateful to have known Jennifer and to be able to count her as a dear friend.
