Our front cover image this month is “The Skelpies” which pays homage to the shipbuilders of Port Glasgow, photo taken by Murdo McLeod. There is more detail about the sculpture on page 11. We are sad to see the Cross Cafe closing its doors after almost 100 years in business. In their ﬁnal month of September there will be a sale of confectionery and greeting cards as an expression of their deep appreciation. The Advertizer team wishes Alda and Johanna a happy retirement! You can ﬁnd some history on the Cross Cafe on page 30. Another business in Kilmacolm, Sole Solution, has outgrown its current shop and is moving its location to the old Co-Op spot. We have an interview with the owner, Laura Kelly, on page 31. This month’s walk covers “The Craigie” at Duncarnock Fort, Neilston (page 40). There’s all this and more in our September issue!

Afflu󰇪n󰇹 C󰈣󰈩mu󰇳󰇮󰇺y F󰇼󰇳󰈨 Local Bridge of Weir professional services company, Affluent Financial Group has awarded Elderslie based Rays of Hope cancer support group a generous grant from the Affluent Community Fund. The Affluent Community Fund exists to support local charities and community groups seeking funds for development and support projects. The Affluent community fund has awarded more than £25,000 to local groups over the last 5 years Rays of Hope (https://www.raysofhopecancersupport.com/) provides a supportive environment for those dealing with cancer and offers a range of services to improve physical and emotional wellbeing such as exercise classes, a walking group, social activities, therapy, and counselling.

The grant from Affluent will be used to pay for two additional support workers for the next year and will allow Rays of Hope to offer evening sessions for those unable to access services during business hours. Linda O’Malley and her team at Rays of Hope are thrilled with the support from The Affluent Community Fund. Kitty Stirling, Practice Manager at Affluent stated “We are delighted to assist such an important local community group, and to enable local people affected by cancer to have greater access to the support available from Rays of Hope”

St 󰈕in󰈝ent’s Hos󰇵ice To󰇴 󰈓eam Renfrewshire charity St Vincent’s Hospice has completed its top team with the appointment of Gillian Green as its new Director of Fundraising and Supporter Relations. Gillian’s appointment completes the new line-up at St Vincent’s after the appointment of a new Chief Executive in April 2021 and the appointment of a new Director of Care and Quality in October 2021 when Susan McCallum joined the team after 17 years at Ayrshire Hospice. With over 23 years of experience in the charity sector, Gillian began her fundraising career at Children’s Hospice Association Scotland (CHAS) in 1999 and during her time at CHAS developed her strategic and leadership skills, rising to the role of Head of Fundraising Operations. In 2019 she joined Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) where, as Assistant Director of Fundraising, she used innovative ideas to maximise fundraising opportunities.

Sma’ Shot 󰈉otta󰇫es The Sma’ Shot Cottages are a major attraction in the Renfrewshire area, providing visitors with an insight into two distinct periods of Paisley’s weaving history!

Wednesday & Saturday 12noon - 4pm / Fridays 1pm - 5pm Sma Shot Cottages, 2 Sma’ Shot Lane, Paisley, PA1 2HG Free but donations welcome! On entering from Shuttle Street, visitors immediately step back into the 18th century into the typical weaver’s cottage which was originally built in the 1750s. The cottage has been matched to written descriptions in histories of the town and has only been altered slightly from original dimensions in the 19th century. On crossing the yard, you will visit a small row of three cottages, dated 70 years ahead in the 1820s - 1840s, where you can immerse yourself in history as you experience life as a weaver in this historical town during the 19th century. Come along and join us in our tea room, where we serve beverages and homemade goods and share stories of the past. We are open April - September, every Wednesday & Saturday 12noon - 4pm and Fridays 1pm - 5pm. Sma Shot Cottages are owned and run by the Old Paisley Society, a registered charity. Admission is free, however, all donations towards the upkeep of the cottages are gratefully accepted. The Weavers Cottage is wheelchair accessible, as are the ground ﬂoor, garden and the tea room.

Beat the Street game is coming to Paisley for the first time! Beat the Street is a real-life physical activity game that aims to get whole communities moving together by making exercise into a fun competition where participants of all ages can win points and prizes for taking part. Paisley residents can join in the fun with a game that takes place from Wednesday 31st August to Wednesday 12th October. Prior to the game, residents will see special sensors called Beat Boxes appearing on lampposts around these areas. Once the game starts, players will hover their card over the Beat Box to start their journey, before walking, cycling or wheeling to the next one to score points. There will be 69 Beat Boxes placed around the town and players can then clock up active travel miles for their team. The game is free and open to anyone of any age. Primary school children will be provided with cards and maps via their school and the wider community is invited to collect a free card from a distribution point listed at www.beatthestreet.me/paisley Players can join a school team, a workplace team, charity team or community and the further that participants walk, cycle or wheel, the more points they will win for their team. The teams that top the leaderboards will be in with a chance of winning vouchers for books and sports equipment at the end of the six-week game, with prizes for average points too, so smaller teams are also in with a chance of winning prizes. Councillor Michelle Campbell, Convener for the Economy and Regeneration Policy Board at Renfrewshire Council, said: “We’re delighted to have been able to bring the competition to the town and look forward to seeing how far everyone can walk, cycle, and wheel in the six-week game. “Previous games nearby have shown that Beat the Street is a great way of getting children, families and our communities active. The first speaker will be Alison Cathcart and her subject will be “”Scots of the Southwest and the Plantations in Ulster”. This I think will be an interesting evening so we look forward to a good attendance of members and visitors. The Museum has continued to open over the summer manned as always by volunteers. This sometimes proved difficult to get cover for people going on holiday. Calling all Railway Enthusiasts

In 2016 the 86% of local population of Port Glasgow voted in the Port Glasgow Sculpture Competition. In first place was a proposal by the sculpture John McKenna to build two 9-meter-high stainless steel shipbuilding figures at work. It stands today in Coronation Park in Port Glasgow. A truly iconic sight.

If you are interested in the railways of Renfrewshire and the Gryffe area you may be interested in joining the Glasgow and South Western Railway Association. The G&SWRA is a Scottish charity dedicated to historical research into the history of one of the five railway companies which grew in the mid 19th century and many of whose lines are still in use today.

John McKenna was born in Manchester. He studied in Worcester and London then taught in Stafford College. Later he returned to Worcester where he began to make many public art commissions including two for the crown estate. In 2002 was commissioned to create the main artwork on the Cunard Transatlantic Liner the Queen Mary 2. Having run out of space for this large commission, he decided to relocate to Scotland where found a suitable base in South Ayrshire where he was able to create larger public art pieces for which he was to become known.

The G&SWR operated with a triangle loosed formed between Glasgow St Enoch station to Carlisle including Kilmarnock and Dumfries, to Stranraer and back to Glasgow including Ayr, Ardrossan, Largs and Greenock Princes Pier. The line was incorporated into the LMS in 1923, into British Rail upon nationalisation in 1948 and into ScotRail when privatised.

The Skelpies – as it has been affectionally christened by locals - stand in Coronation Park in Port Glasgow between the two lighthouses in an area once known as Devil’s Point. Next door is Ferguson’s Marine – the last shipbuilding company on the lower Clyde. In its industrial heyday, Port Glasgow was home to many shipbuilders, including: Lithgows, John Wood, Cairds, Hamiltons, Duncans, Lamonts and Fergusons. Europe’s first steam powered boat, The Commet, was built here. Other vessels built here included Tea Clippers, Merchantmen and eventually the Super Tanker – a ship so big it was built in two parts, launched and then joined together once aﬂoat.

We produce an annual Journal and four Newsletters a year for members. We have arranged for the production of model kits in the past as well as arranging field trips – these have included Bo’ness to see progress on the restoration of several preserved G&SWR carriages and rolling stock, Hunterson coal terminal and tour of coal ship, and walks along former lines of the G&SWR including Girvan Harbour, Maidens and Dunure, Johnstone loop line and Ayrshire valley lines.

However, this sculpture is not about the rich shipbuilding families. It is about the riveters, welders and others who put the nuts and bots together and built by hand these immense vessels that were to sail all over the world. The dynamism of this sculpture perfectly encapsulates the energy of these shipbuilders. Significantly, after the first world war, forged in docklands like these throughout the Clyde grew a radical left wing labour movement that was to transform politics in Scotland. The demise of shipbuilding along the Clyde drove many into poverty. Despite attempts at regeneration, Port Glasgow is still beset with high levels of unemployment and deprivation. People from all over Scotland are making trips to see this towering structure. The hope is that it will increase much-needed tourism in the area, as the Falkirk Kelpies have done. This incredible monument is an impressive tribute to the area’s shipbuilding past and conveys a real sense of pride in Inverclyde’s working-class heritage.

11t󰇬 Ers󰈫ine Wal󰈫 of Hope Over the years I have received great support from the community in my efforts to raise awareness and funds for Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA). You will therefore not be surprised to learn that we will again do a sponsored Walk of Hope along the banks of the Clyde in Erskine. This will take place this year on Saturday 8th October at 11am from the Riverside car park - please join us. As the walk was designed to suit people with HD the aim is to walk as much or as little as you wish As you may know, HD is a devastating neurological condition which renders the sufferer increasingly dependent on care over the course of 15 to 25 years. In many cases this care is provided by the immediate family. The condition has been described as a combination of motor neuron disease,Parkinson’s and elements of Alzheimer’s. Sadly,it is genetic and every child of a person with the condition has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. There are now real hopes of a treatment but it will be many years before these drugs are available. In the meantime, families and children who are affected by HD will continue to need the support of SHA. We seek to raise funds for SHA to enable them to continue to provide a comprehensive support and advisory service to families who are affected by HD. Scotland’s largest autism-speciﬁc charity is looking for people to sign up to its guided walk up Scotland’s 10th highest mountain on Saturday 10th September to fundraise for the charity Two qualified mountain leaders have been arranged to lead a small group of fundraisers up Ben Lawers in Highland Perthshire as part of the ‘Autism Ascent’ fundraising challenge. To join the walk fundraisers pay a £50 registration fee with a sponsorship target of £150 and they will receive a free Scottish Autism fundraising t-shirt for taking part in the challenge. Alternatively, fundraisers can do their own mountain-related challenge, including organising their own hillwalk or walking up stairs in their local area or park equivalent to the height of a Munro! Stella joined Soroptimist International of Paisley in 1970 and held the post of President in 1982/83. She continued to be actively involved in Club activities until deteriorating health meant she had to move into Elderslie Care Home. A Paisley ‘buddy’ through and through, Stella held posts as Deputy Medical Officer of Health and Public Health Medical Consultant for the area. She had many interests which included travelling extensively, but she was always interested in what was happening locally. Members hope that visitors to the garden will enjoy the peace and tranquillity whilst sitting on the bench.

Spree for All - programme returns across Renfrewshire Music fans can enjoy a bumper line-up of gigs across Renfrewshire from 1st – 11th September The packed programme will feature a mix of indoor and outdoor shows, fantastic gigs and open nights across 11 days, with something to suit everyone’s tastes. Paisley venues include The Bungalow, The Cave, The Keg, The Old Swan and Rocknrolla’s. There’s an afternoon of performances to enjoy at Johnstone Band Stand on Saturday 3rd before live music at The Trust Inn and Habbies Bar and Grill in Kilbarchan that evening. Lochwinnoch’s Lochbarr Centre will host a Village Live night on Friday 9th, while Lochwinnoch Golf Club, The Three Churches, The Brown Bull and The Corner Bar will stage a variety of shows on Saturday 10th. There’s a packed weekend of live entertainment in Renfrew at the Victoria Bar on Saturday 10th with performances from top local acts in Robertson Park on Sunday 11th from 12noon – 5pm. This year’s Spree for All has been programmed by Tommy McGrory of local music charity Loud ‘n’ Proud and Alan McEwan, director of Brick Lane Studios. Alan McEwan said: “I am absolutely delighted to be involved with what is going to be a fantastic Spree for All again this September. It’s great to be back working with artists in venues across Renfrewshire. “We have great acts such as Spiders on Mars, The M65s, Berry Tweed and The Chasers and North to Abeline to name a few – and also the wonderful Village Live youth project at our partner venues. “I would like to thank Morag (Lochwinnoch Arts), Danny (Raptor Studios) and Ali and Jason (Erskine Arts) for helping make this happen.” Pauline Allan, Events Manager at Renfrewshire Council, said: “We’re really looking forward to welcoming back the Spree for All, which will once again provide a great accompaniment to The Spree festival in Paisley. FARA - Saturday 10th September at Lochwinnoch Golf Club Doors open at 7pm Having grown up together in Orkney, we formed FARA in 2014 with the aim of celebrating the music we cut our teeth on whilst creating innovative new music incorporating the influences and experiences we had each absorbed as individuals in the intervening time. We use our three fiddles and piano to develop new instrumental music drawing on the energetic, driving traditional music we grew up on, alongside songs in four-part harmony. We compose all of our music ourselves, and Orcadian art is at the heart of all our work. The majority of the songs we write use words by Orcadian writers, providing important artistic inspiration and imagery for our music. Our aim is to develop further the cannon of Orkney folk music, making git relevant for the young people with whom it is increasingly popular. cllr james maclaren Perseverance pays off. It took a while but the council has done a good job with cutting back the bushes and clearing the drains in the Livery Walk carpark in Bridge of Weir. A big improvement. Something I had been pushing for a while. The closure of part of Station Road in Langbank has caused confusion it would seem for the council bin collections. It looks like they have realised that they need to do something rather than ignore the issue. Smaller vehicles should be collecting the rubbish over the next few days. In the meantime, BT extend their closure time for their duct and box installation works. Hopefully it won’t last much longer. Just a pity that it’s not fibre for the whole village they are putting in. It’s nice to see local organisations receiving grants from the council, but it always seems to be a fight to get the cheques. ‘Bonnie Bishopton’ are looking for their grant money for Christmas lighting - the grant meeting was a couple of months ago and yet no sign of even part of the money required. Fingers crossed that they get all the money required to complete the project in time to order and erect the lights. At least they can go ahead with some amazing looking benches for the village with other grant money. A reminder that I have set up a blog page and this can be found on www.cllrjmaclaren.blogspot.com where I will post my reports to community councils and other relevant material. I am delighted that Provost Cameron recently took time out of her busy schedule to join me at the opening of the new green gym at Ardgryffe Park. This means a lot to Houston Community Council who worked tirelessly to raise £7,000 to add to the £35,000 grant from the Council’s Green Spaces Fund. This total of £42,000 has made possible this new state of the art green gym. This green gym really shows how public parks are developing into real community spaces and not just spaces primarily for children to play, although that is obviously still really important. Ardgryffe, and parks like it across Renfrewshire, can offer a real gym experience for grandparents and parents when they take kids to the park.

I called a public meeting in conjunction with Houston Community Council at the Carrick Centre on Wednesday 24th August, in response to the many constituents who have contacted me regarding the potential Stewart Milne housing development west of Barochan Road, Houston.

The openness and accessibility of the green gym means that, at a time when we are all worried about the cost of living crisis, (and for many that might mean the gym membership has to go) then green gyms can fill that health gap at absolutely no additional cost to families. As a former leisure health professional I really think this is the way to go.

All councillors are required to maintain a neutral position on planning applications, to ensure a process that’s free from any conﬂict of interest that would remove their ability to vote on the planning application should it be called in for a full council vote. Therefore, I won’t give a view on the proposed Stewart Milne development west of Barochan Road, but I have carefully noted the feedback and concerns that constituents have raised with me.

I would also like to stress that the Ardgryffe Park green gym is a testimony to the vision of this current administration which, in the last term of office and in this, will continue to maintain and promote the very important Village Improvement/Green Spaces Fund. This has put money into countless public parks across Renfrewshire which were left fallow for decades.

I invited a Stewart Milne representative and council planning officials to provide information and answer questions from the public. My aim in holding the public meeting is to make sure constituents have all the information they need to enable them to respond effectively to the planning application proposal when it’s submitted, should they wish to submit their views.

Constituents have raised concerns about building on greenbelt land, particularly land that is still in productive farming use such as the west of Barochan Road site. Concerns about the impact on local infrastructure such as schools, GP services and roads of another housing development in Houston have also been raised. Residents have also asked questions regarding the impact on Houston’s conservation village status, particularly how the village centre will cope with significant increases in traffic. I have campaigned for a number of traffic safety improvements in the area, including to address concerns about speeding cars using Main Street in Houston. I look forward to seeing detailed proposals as to how these safety concerns will be addressed with additional traffic ﬂows routinely using the local roads.

Ukraine Project Following an appeal from the Kyiv Rotary District, the club agreed a donation to a project to rebuild Moshchum Village, north of Kyiv in the Ukraine. Work has started to provide as much accommodation as possible before winter sets in.

Musical Lunch This is taking place on Sunday 2nd October to raise funds for 500 miles - the charity run by Olivia Giles to provide prosthetic limbs to disabled people in Malawi and Zambia. The venue is St Columba’s School, Kilmacolm (one of our corporate members) and thanks to them and their caterers for their help. I hope everyone has had a good summer. I have recently had some concerns raised with me regarding the road markings and lack of cats eyes on the road between Brookfield and Bridge of Weir. With the nights soon to be drawing in, residents rightly want this road to be as safe as possible. I am pleased to confirm that officers have confirmed that work to replace the white lines and cats eyes has been scheduled for September. I am glad this work is being carried out soon and I will be monitoring this to ensure the work progresses. Our local parks were greatly utilised over the summer months. I received some safety concerns from residents of Crosslee regarding the entrance to Whirlie Road Park. I’m happy to report that officers have confirmed to me that slow markings will be implemented at the junction of Brierie Hill Road and Whirlie Road to increase road safety in the area. I also recently had the pleasure of visiting Gryffe High School and meeting with Mr Christie the Head Teacher. I was by no means a star pupil when I was at high school, but as a former pupil at Gryffe High myself almost 20 years ago, it was amazing to see how much has changed in that time. The school is doing really impressive work, I was particularly impressed by the emphasis that is put on school pupils and staff wellbeing. The pandemic has been hard on all of us, but the adjustments and sacrifices that young people at school have had to make have been tough and it is vital that this support is in place for them going forward. cllr David McGonigle I was delighted to be elected in the recent Council election and am hugely grateful to everyone that voted for me and for all the notes of congratulations. I will endeavour to work hard on my election priorities. My priorities are:- Saving greenbelt areas from development, ensuring proper services and infrastructure for new housing developments are in place, investment in improving road surfaces, opposing increases in council tax and tackling antisocial behaviour. This month a number of constituents have contacted me about antisocial behaviour. This includes increased levels of graffiti, quad bikes on the cycle paths, ﬂy-tipping and vandalism of life belt stations. I have been working closely with community safety officers at the council and local police officers on these issues. It was great to attend Brookfield Gala day on Saturday 20th August, thankfully the weather cleared up just in time for the festivities to commence.

cllr andy doig This has been not only a long hot summer weather wise, but also a summer recess has seen rising temperatures amongst local residents due to potential planning decisions coming down the pipeline. The Carsewood House planning application in Howwood has caused great local concern there, as has an application by the Bowfield Country Club for an extension. In the case of Carsewood, I have had to get planning officials directly involved to stop the applicant proceeding without approval. I do not look favourably on such tactics. The Barrhill Crescent site in Kilbarchan is once again the subject of another planning application and key planning considerations there, as with Carsewood, would be the traffic congestion caused at various pinch points, in Kilbarchan and Howwood respectively, if the respective applications get approved. And last, but not least, there has been the appearance of a planning application from Euro Garages to build a filling station and associated services on the land behind the Roadhead roundabout. In the case of the Carsewood House and the Roadhead roundabout application, I liaised with other ward Cllrs to call both applications in to the Board to allow for the fullest scrutiny.

St Vincent’s Hospice, which supports people across Renfrewshire and in neighbouring areas of North Ayrshire, officially launched its new corporate identity this month. Chief Executive, Kirsteen Murray, said “We had incredibly positive feedback from supporters and team members who saw the new logo and strapline during their development who felt that the new branding exactly reﬂects what we are as an organisation – the little hospice with the big heart!”. Despite poor weather, we managed to distribute a large number of ﬂyers and bookmarks and engaged people in conversation about eco issues. There seemed to be interest in better ways to recycle, and saving scarce resources in general. We hope to have a bigger presence at next year’s stall. Building on the success of our Eco Forum Event in May, we have set a date for our follow up event on Wednesday 26th October and have been in touch with a couple of speakers who have indicated their willingness to support future Eco Forum events - please put the date in your diary and watch this space for further updates. In the meantime, please continue to support our highly successful “Blister Pack” initiative by bringing your discarded prescription foils along to church. Illegally parked vehicles, abandoned vehicles, speeding through built up areas and antisocial behaviour have been just some of the subjects of communication received recently. Taking that into account, I feel it might be worth including these useful numbers in the article, the Police can be contacted by telephoning 101. Renfrewshire Council Antisocial Behaviour Team can be contacted Monday to Thursday 8.45am until 4.45pm and Friday 8.45am until 3.55pm - Tel: 07768 988186. Outwith these times the wardens can be contacted on 0300 300 0380. On a more positive note I was able to get a preview of the refurbished McKillop Hall in Lochwinnoch and I must say it looked fantastic!!! It now boasts WIFI and a new sound system, plus all the side rooms have been completed to a good standard - suffice to say new bookings have already been taken. I was also invited by Kilbarchan Community Council to join them in a visit with ofﬁcers to the Steeple Hall in Kilbarchan during which I was able to climb the steeple and visit all the rooms in the building. I think this reinforced the view that this iconic building really does need significant investment to bring it up to the standard it deserves. This is not the only Hall in Ward 9 which requires signiﬁcant investment, Howwood Village Hall also requires a lot of work. Finally, congratulations are in order to Kilbarchan Pipe Band who achieved 3rd place in the world at grade 4b and still in Ward 9, Johnstone Pipe Band World Champions at Grade 3A. Well Done All!

We had a wonderful day on Saturday 13th August which was our Garden Open Day. The sun shone and we had over 60 visitors to the garden. Everyone was very impressed at the transformation and how the garden looked. There was an optional collection and £100 was raised for St Vincent’s Hospice. Remember you can come into the garden any time the Centre is open and enjoy the surroundings, have a seat, read a book, have a tea/coffee. You will be made most welcome.

cllr gillian graham I’d like to start by congratulating our high school pupils and teachers on excellent exam results this year. Despite the challenges of COVID recovery, pupils and education staff have shown dedication and resilience and the results are thoroughly deserved. For pupils who may be disappointed with their results, remember help is out there. In addition to guidance from teachers, the SQA offers several resources to assist you, these can be found at www.sqa.org.uk”www.sqa.org.uk. Although the Council has been in recess, ward work continues. I have been dealing with several concerns raised by constituents including various site visits. I visited Branscroft in Kilbarchan and Bridge of Weir Road to see the state of hedges which restrict sight lines for drivers and cover much of the pavement, making walking between Kilbarchan, Bridge of Weir or Brookfield treacherous. I’ve raised this with officers and an inspection is now being carried out and hedgerows cut back to improve matters. Illegal and inconsiderate parking is an ongoing problem, particularly at MacDowall Street, Johnstone affecting pedestrians and local commuters. I’ve advised the Council’s Wardens of this resulting in an increased presence. Parking on pavements is a Police matter and I’m discussing this with them in relation to consistent hazardous parking in Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch and Howwood which impacts upon residents with physical disabilities or prams/buggies. I’m pleased to see the road surface has been improved at Tandlehill Road and Kibbleston Road. However, the road surface entering Howwood needs serious attention - I’ll be seeking an urgent solution from ‘Roads’. Finally, congratulations to all involved in the Cycle Arts Festival Renfrewshire and the improvements made through their colourful art work.

cllr david wilson St Columba Pipe band came third in the World Championships in Glasgow to add to their ﬁrst places at the UK and European Championships. A credit to the school and the village. Further success was achieved in the Highers with 20 pupils attaining 5As . Some 30% of the role in the year. As I write results from PGHS and St Stephens have not been forthcoming and I just hope that all pupils achieve the results they need. As newly appointed Chair of the local Police and Fire and Rescue scrutiny committee, I have held meetings with senior officers. There is a determination to make our streets and communities safe from crime and to apprehend those involved in drugs and violence. The Police and our community warden service work closely together and have an operations meeting every morning to exchange intel. As councillors we have our specific liaison Sergeant who confidentially handles concerns from constituents via ourselves. We receive briefings on being physically safe ourselves and can also refer any libel or slander directed at us, particularly on social media. I was given wrong information regarding the St James pavement replacement. I reported that the Scottish Government allocated the money in connection with the Quarry Drive housing application. It was the former, but the monies come from their Towns and Villages Fund. We will now be able to get rid of the puddle outside the butchers shop and it is also intended to renew as far as Elphinstone. Concerns have been raised regarding the frequency of the food bins uplift, it is felt that the biodegradable bags have not been lasting the course. Officers are investigating. We are consulting on the delisting of Overton Road from the list of public roads. I am supportive of this action and please contact me if you require any further information. Officers are investigating the feasibility of a skate park for children in the Wee Park at West Glen Road.

cllr Stephen Mccabe Last month I attended the “One Planet Picnic” at the Parklea Branching Out charity in Port Glasgow as part of the Council’s Meliora Festival. It was a great community event with people of all ages enjoying themselves in the sunshine. Parklea is a fantastic local charity that supports adults with additional support needs through training and work experience and I am pleased the Council has been able to secure funding of £1.1m for them so they can expand their activities. I was also pleased to represent the Council on 13th August at the Butterfly Remembrance service organised by the baby loss charity SiMBA at Gourock Park to honour babies that have been lost by local families during pregnancy. The Council has worked closely with SiMBA to establish a tree of tranquility in the park, which is a beautiful memorial to the babies we have lost. It is there to provide a place of peace and thoughtfulness for parents and families to remember their loved ones. Work is due to start this month to build a reservoir in Glen Moss, Kilmacolm to reduce the risk of flooding in the centre of Kilmacolm at Market Place. The Council is also tendering for flood prevention measures at Gotter Water in Quarrier’s Village. The Council’s Environment and Regeneration Committee has approved further funding of £100,000 towards the upgrading of footpaths in Kilmacolm Village Centre. This brings total funding to £175,000. I don’t have a date yet for when this work will start. At the time of writing part of the main road through Quarrier’s Village – Craigbet Road – was due for resurfacing during the week beginning 22 August. I have been lobbying for this work to be carried out for some time so I am pleased it now has been.

Win󰈧󰈠 󰈍ill A󰈦t Clu󰇩 Windy Hill Art Club (the former St Columba’s Art evening class) is now a club rather than a class for like minded artists to meet on a Tuesday evening 6pm till 8.30pm at the Cargill Centre in Kilmacolm. Since last summer we have already achieved many aims including forging links with the local community. We exhibited ﬂower paintings at the Horticultural Society AGM. Sales of our paintings raised over £200 for their chosen charity, the Ardgowan Hospice.

Dear Patrons, After almost 100 years in business, the Cross Cafe in Kilmacolm will close its doors. Sadly, Alda and Johanna are now retiring and with no-one to take over “the family business” they have come to the end of an era.

Our club is striving to be multi - dimensional. Primarily creating artwork in a relaxed and friendly environment, we are now adding interest by inviting professional artists to demonstrate. Open to all members and those non members wishing to pay on the evening. Next term we are welcoming award winning local artists, Rosemary Beaton and Denise Findlay to share their skills as part of our events calendar for 2022/23.

A Brief History of the Cross Cafe Bernedetto Pignatelli came to Scotland as a boy in 1902. Later he met Carmela Rossi in Glasgow whom he married. When their family came long they decided they wanted the children to be brought up in the country. The family came to Kilmacolm in 1924, took over an empty shop which had been a fruit shop and confectioners, which became the Cross Cafe. Bernedetto and Camela had two boys and three girls, one of the girls being Mafalda, also known as Mabel (Alda and Johanna’s mother). In 1948, Mabel met Giovanni Jannetta, known as Johnny. They married in 1950 and took over the Cross Cafe from Mabel’s parents Bernedetto and Carmela, who wanted to go back home to Casino in Italy to retire. Mabel and Johnny went on to have two daughters, Alda and Johanna. Both Johnny and Mabel have now sadly passed away. Alda and Johanna have carried on running the family business and the rest, as they say, is history! At The Advertizer, we are sure we can speak for everyone who frequented the cafe, and say that they will be sadly missed.

Outloo󰈬 OUTLOOK is a social community group led by the Community Issues team of Kilmacolm Old Kirk, offering fellowship and friendship, meeting in Kidston Hall on ﬁrst and third Thursdays monthly at 2pm. Interesting speakers covering a variety of informal topics, followed by homemade baking, teas/coffees and chat. Tea money is donated to a monthly charity. Our first meeting, on 15th September, will welcome Audrey Ward, from Visibility Scotland. Welcome back to our loyal friends, and we extend a very warm welcome to anyone new to the work of OUTLOOK.

Sam M󰈛󰈽inn The McGinn family are so sad to announce the passing of our wonderful Samuel McGinn. Sam slipped away peacefully on the morning of Sunday 14th August at the RAH Paisley surrounded by his family. Despite a number of health issues during his life Sam had surpassed his 90th birthday on 1st August two weeks earlier. The family would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for their kind words, cards and support.

Sole Solution Is On The Move

Kilmacolm has been privy to excellent foot care since 2016 when Laura Kelly and her mum opened their first Podiatry Clinic and shoe shop – now known as Sole Solutions. Laura has built up a loyal customer base and the clinic and shop is wellloved by Kilmacolmians and those from surrounding areas. Having outgrown their premises, they are moving to the old CO-OP spot. I caught up with Laura to ask her a few questions about the move and find out if the village is in for any exciting new experiences. 1. Why did you decide to go into podiatry? Not everyone loves feet?! I get asked this a lot and it’s not really a straight answer – when I left school I went to university and studied Social Work for two years, however, I didn’t enjoy the course and felt there were too many restrictions on how we could help people, so I made the decision to change course to something hands on and patient focused. I chose, in the end, to do a Podiatry degree as it seemed likely I would be able to get a job in the field afterwards - either in the NHS or at a private practise. I found it fascinating. Being an expert in one area really grew my interests in anatomy as a whole and movement of the body. I put everything I had into my studies and qualified with a 1st Class Honours Degree in 2011. 2. What is the best part of your job? Having had my own business for 8+ years I’ve made so many friends and helped so many people with more than just their foot health, but the real reward is seeing people leave my clinic pain free whether this has been a problem nail or a biomechanical issue. Being able to help someone stay comfortable, fit, active and mobile gives me unmatched job satisfaction. 3. Why are you moving premises? Starting off in 2016 it was just me and the premises were ample, however we are now a clinic with three Podiatrists and one Foot Health Practitioner and we are very limited in space. We are struggling to meet the demand of the service we provide leading to long waiting times. There are also steps into our current clinic and it has been an issue for our elderly patients which has meant a few now need home visits. 4. You mentioned to me previously that there will be four new treatment rooms, what kind of treatments are you offering? Podiatry has many aspects. Our treatments range from basic nail cutting and hard skin removal to nail surgery and verruca needling. We treat those who

cannot reach their feet to those who are competing in athletic competitions at the highest level. As Podiatrists, we are trained in all aspects of foot health, and this can be the removal of a corn to a bespoke insole and exercise programme for abnormal foot mechanics. We have patients from birth (youngest was 3 weeks old) to old age (our eldest customer is 103 years old). A lot of people suffer with foot problems and are too embarrassed to come to see a Podiatrist, but we can honestly guarantee we have always seen worse! I have worked at a drop-in clinic for the homeless so nothing can shock me now. Our biomechanical assessments are for those with foot pain, and we look at how your feet and legs work and determine where and why you’re in pain, then we can come up with a treatment plan including things like stretches, insoles, acupuncture, strapping and footwear advice. We offer warm wax treatment which is very popular as an ‘add on’ to a routine treatment of hard skin removal as this deeply hydrates the skin leaving them soft and subtle. We also have Judi Holmes - Sports Massage Therapist and Leigh Sullivan - Beauty Therapist joining us who are both already well known in the area and are excellent at what they do – so that is exciting for us and the village. 5. How long will the move/shop fitting take? Do you anticipate a period of closure while you make the move? We are very excited about this move and the fit out is well under way. It will take three months to get to the point of being able to move as the premises required a complete strip back to brick and full renovation. We are aiming to move over one weekend and reopen the new premises without any delay or closures – wish us luck! 6. Are you keeping the shoe shop? Yes – we are going to be increasing our range of footwear and footcare products/accessories as we now have more space to display and store stock. The shoes and accessories are a nice addition to our clinic services. Our shoes and products are chosen by the podiatrists from brands such as Skechers, Rieker, Caprice, Padders and DB, with all the aspects of a good shoe in mind, but also fashion – no one wants ugly shoes! 7. You mentioned that you are pregnant. How does the timing of the new shop opening coincide with your pregnancy? Who will look after your feet?! My timing is impeccable as everyone keeps telling me (or I’m mad say some – ha ha!). I’m meant to be going on maternity leave the week after we open, but I’m not sure I’ll be able to stay away as I don’t want to miss out on the fun. The bigger I get, the harder it is to treat my patients, but I can always make everyone tea and coffee and do the cleaning up… or maybe I’ll be the one getting my feet done, followed by a warm wax treatment, massage and a facial!

The children experienced a wide variety of learning opportunities and activities across the Summer months including Beach week where they had pool parties, beach themed snacks and of course explored our sandpits collecting shells and investigating real starfish! Disney week was a hit - we saw some fantastic STEM skills including a fantastic model of Elsa’s Castle in Arendelle built by one of the Grasshopper Children. Nature week where the babies explored nature and had the opportunity to nap in nature and many other themes across the nursery. Over the past 25 years Keep Scotland Beautiful has supported educators and young people in every local authority area across Scotland through the international Eco-Schools programme, with many of them proudly flying the Green Flag to share and celebrate their achievements. The programme aims to take action to tackle climate change and environmental awareness an intrinsic part of the life and ethos of schools. It provides a framework to engage the wider school community in climate action aligned with the purposes of Curriculum for Excellence and Learning for Sustainability. To complete the Green Flag journey each school has a choice of ten topics to engage with, from climate action, to food and the environment, to litter, to energy. The schools also choose one of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals to link their Eco-Schools work to. In September, as part of Scotland’s Climate Week, the charity will host a Climate Action Week packed full of live lessons and activities. Schools will be invited to pledge to join a Climate Action Schools network to help Scotland reach Net Zero by 2045. Bri󰈧󰈪e of We󰇮󰇶 󰈑rima󰇶󰈠 Fantastic Fundraisers and Good Times Ahead We are so proud of our pupils who continue to impress us over and over again with their kindness and compassion. During the summer holidays Primary 4 pupils Alexis and Poppy have been fundraising for charity. Poppy has been busy making loom bands to sell, while Alexis organised a fabulous raffle to raise money for the children’s charity CHAS. Thank you to all the local people and businesses who donated prizes allowing her to sell tickets and raise a fantastic £260. It’s amazing what can be done when we have the heart to get out there and do our bit. Well done girls! We are also proud to add to our Reading Schools Gold award, with another Gold award from LGBT Scotland for excellent work in promoting equality and inclusion. We hope we can continue to add to our reputation as a caring and welcoming school. It was fantastic to welcome over 20 new pupils from different schools in August, as well as all our new P1s. They are settling in well. This year we look forward to the return of our house system, and the election of P7 house captains and vice captains. Assemblies are back, and we hope to have visits out and visitors in to school. After school clubs will soon get going, hopefully concerts will return, and the choir has been invited back to perform in Princes Square in December. In our learning we look forward to joining other schools in Renfrewshire to focus on writing through the Talk for Writing programme. There is so much to look forward to as we anticipate an exciting year ahead!

Renfrewshire Golf Union Stuart Dickson wins Freedman Trophy - Renfrewshire Boys Match Play Championship The final of the competition was played at Kilmacolm Golf Club on Sunday 14th August and conditions on the day were good for golf with a light wind and a continuation of the recent warm weather with hard running ground. The final matched Alexander Farmer – Kilmacolm, the holder, against Stuart Dickson – Fereneze and this turned out to be a classic encounter by 2 of the finest boys within the RGU. On the 18th both hit their tee shots left with Dickson finding a poor lie in the semi rough and his second shot went through the green. Farmer was safely on the green in 2 and when Dickson hit a poor pitch and failed to hole his next shot, 2 putts by Farmer was enough to take the match to extra holes. The 19th was halved in par with Farmer having the better opportunity for birdie after Dickson missed from distance. On the short 20th both players found the rear left hand bunker with their tee shots, but Farmer took 2 shots to recover while Dickson only just got out, but from about 15 feet holed his putt for par and victory. A tense and thrilling final played in a great spirit by both players with some very fine golf.

In the morning semi-final Alexander Farmer beat his club mate Struan Brooksbank 4/3, while Stuart Dickson beat Ashton McKechan – Paisley by 5/4 both boys conceding 2 and 3 years to their opponents. Quarter Final losers were Hugh Shiels jnr – East Renfrewshire, Ryan Jackson – Elderslie and Ross Anderson -Williamwood.

With a school roll of around 600, our school’s size is its strength.

Renfrewshire Golf Union thanks Kilmacolm Golf Club for their continued support of the event and the Freedman family though Alison Murray for attendance and in presenting the trophy.

Boys Champion of Champions

Our results once again prove the invaluable benefit of small class sizes, with subjects such as Music, Latin and Art enjoying 100% A grades at National 5. Indeed, pupils studying Music achieved 100% A Band 1 grades across all levels – National 5, Higher and Advanced Higher – in the 2022 exam diet.

Played at Paisley Golf Club in July and once again generously sponsored by Greenlaw Garage, Paisley, on a day when the weather was blustery and damp, the final of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys Champion of Champions took place.

There is a similar picture in core subjects, with 67% of pupils achieving an A in Higher English and 60% in Higher Maths.

In the Final Rhys McIlroy – Elderslie faced Stuart Dickson - Fereneze. In the semi-finals Dickson beat Alexander Farmer – Kilmacolm by 2/1 and McIlroy beat Neil Rainey – Erskine 7/6 In the previous round Stuart defeated Tom Hepburn – Williamwood 2/1 while Rhys defeated Toby Mathers – East Renfrewshire 4/3. Rhys left in early August to take up a golf scholarship in the USA in Tennessee and we wish him the good luck in this.

Brookﬁeld Bowling Club Annual Charity Day Saturday 6th August The format was a balloted mixed triples competition for the Cole Hamilton Salver. In a lovely sunny day the winning team of David Dobson, Marion Stromberg and Alistair Forsyth prevailed. We then all enjoyed an afternoon tea, provided by the members. The Charity this year was Erskine Hospital and over £500 was raised on the day. Ol󰈧 Ranfu󰇶ly La󰈧ies On Friday 22nd July we held the Captain’s Outing. This year and last we have held our ‘away day’ at home. This did not in any way detracted from the enjoyment!! A good number of ladies took to the field in teams of 3, a tri-am Stableford competition and ladies played for the Captain’s Outing Shield. The weather was fair and most ladies managed to get round dry. There were 2 awards for this competition and the outright winner was Lana Wilson with an amazing 42 Stableford points. The team award went to: Roberta McTaggart, Lana Wilson, Georgie Pollock Congratulations to our winners. The trophy and prizes were presented by Fiona McFee our current lady captain. Fiona and her team were given a huge vote of thanks for all their efforts and hard work in making the day so successful. Finals Day was held on 13th August. Fortunately the sun shone all day. The Bronze Shield finalists were Chantal Robertson and Hazel Kirkland. Both ladies gave

it their very best, but as always someone has to win. This year it was Hazel Kirkland congratulations and well done Hazel!! The Ladies Championship finalists were Fiona McPhee and Jen Owen. It was a very exciting game and went right to the 18th hole!!

We are currently in the process of getting a Houston United football team started for the year group entering Primary 2 in August 2022 (born January 2016 and after). The Club is not restricted to Houston residents or children who go to Houston schools, we are open to all who want to play. It is a Club for both boys and girls and we are really keen to invite any budding Lioness’s along.

Ranfurly Castle Ladies

It’s been a busy time out on the golf course in Kilmacolm. With our youngest members enjoying a summer of golf camps led by our team of Professionals, inter club matches for our Seniors, Ladies and Gents teams, fun friendly competitions, open events and our club championship qualifiers, as well as social golf!

July and August are always busy months at the Castle and 14th July saw 96 entries in the Ladies Open Day. The winning team were all members of Old Ranfurly with a score of 61 points and consisted of Lilias Lamont, Fiona Daly and Georgie Pollock with a better inward half over the second team, consisting of Margaret Gray, Linda Anderson and Lana Wilson - also from Old Ranfurly! The raffle was well supported and £510 was raised for Alzheimer Scotland.

A huge congratulations to our Men’s Newton Shield Team who were the overall winners after some hard fought matches in particular the final against Ralston. It was a great achievement, well played to all involved throughout the season. Our ladies Greenlees team is also enjoying success on the course and are in the perfect position to be promoted to division 2 next year after some dominant wins, with 2 more matches to go. The Ladies Open once again was a popular event for our visiting ladies, a large field enjoyed the course in glorious sunshine, and posted some impressive scores. Congratulations to Linda Jack and Fiona Allison both from Dumfries & County Golf Club who took first prize, just ahead of Janet Harkness and Elspeth Howie both from Skelmorlie. Well done to all the players we hope you enjoyed the course and the hospitality at KGC and look forward to seeing you again next year. Alexander Farmer and Matt Clark both had a fantastic run in the Men’s Scottish Amateur Championship, both qualifying to the match play stage getting to the last 16 and last 8 respectively, another great achievement. Meanwhile Mackenzie Holmes, during his return from America, just missed out on winning the U21 Men’s Faldo Series Championship, losing after a sudden death play off, however he is rewarded with a trip to Abu Dhabi for the Europe Grand Final later in the year. Well played and good luck in the finals. Our Club Championship Weekend is all set to be a great showcase of golf, with our Men, Ladies, Seniors and Juniors all battling out to become Champions, good luck to all those in the finals stages.

The 12th of August was the Ladies Invitation day and this was played in the most amazing hot weather. The invited guests enjoyed both the golf and the beautiful views from the course. 3 pairs finished with 44 points so the prizes were decided by looking at the better inward scores. 1st pair Helen Abram and Nicky Stirrup, 2nd pair - Julie Will and Angela Ferguson, 3rd pair - Joy McLeod and Shirley Morran. The West Renfrewshire League team played their final match at Renfrew Golf Club on the evening of 28th July. The weather was a bit mixed and unfortunately the team lost to the home club. This means that Ranfurly have won 2 matches and lost 2, so await to hear whether they will remain in the same division for next year. The Gillies Trophy was played on August 10th with Rosemary Ogilvie the winner on 42 stableford points. The Vets Trophy was played on 17th August with Vivien Howe the winner also having 42 points. On both occasions Alison Templeton was the runner up with 39 and 37 points! The Bronze Champion for the year is Gillian Donaghy having beaten Kate Scott in the final. Congratulations. The David Reid Memorial Mixed Open was held on Sunday 7th August with a full entry. 1st couple were Angela and Hunter Patterson, 2nd were Captain Stevie Scott and Chris Minto and 3rd prize went to Jim and Rosemary Ogilvie. All three couples are Ranfurly Castle members - home advantage playing a part! The raffle on the day was supporting Brain Research UK and raised the wonderful sum of £4,530. A very big thank you to everyone who supported this by donating prizes and buying tickets.

Our recent GQT evening was a light-hearted, productive hour when members aimed to bamboozle the learned panelists with their queries. Whilst we save water and store rainwater in butts, the wily gardener will use tap water on his tomatoes and avoid airborne spores spreading to his greenhouse. Leaves with mildew should be picked off, or picked up, and placed in the recycling bin for general waste - not garden waste where it will spread further. We donated our heavy trestle tables to Galgael Trust in Govan. This charity aims to rehabilitate people through projects working with wood. The trestle tables may not be turned into boats, a recent venture, but their long history and value is not yet over. The Society was contacted by Emma, the Early Learning & Childcare Officer at BoW Primary. Plans are underway there to develop a smallscale sensory garden and Emma requested guidance on how best the children can create a beautiful flower garden. Their aim is to build stronger relationships within the community whilst deepening children’s learning and understanding of their place in the world. We visited the site, had an informal chat with Emma and ran through the basics, reflecting the layout and aspect of the site, and will keep in touch. We meet on the 8th September in Freeland Church Hall at 8pm. We will review the vicissitudes of this year’s growing season and plan the Group’s next programme.

The Walk... ‘The 󰈉raigie’ duncarnock fort walk

by Rona Simpson field. Head to the gate at the bottom of the field where areas of woodland meet. Go over or through the gate and head east towards a fisherman’s hut adjacent to Glanderston Dam. The Craigie will be ahead. Walk along the edge of the dam. Before you reach the road pass through a gate on the right which takes you to the embankment beside the dam. Continue along until you reach a footbridge over Aurs Burn. At the other side follow a path alongside a row of trees. They should be on your right hand side. At the end of the row cross a wooden stile and turn left and follow a path around the base of the Craigie. Follow the path up and take a right at a fork to ascend steeply to a the summit. You are now on top of what was once an iron age fort. Take a moment to think about all that happened here thousands of years ago and admire the views over Glasgow and towards the Campsies in the distance.

Difficulty: Mostly considered easy Starting Point: Neilston Train Station Distance: 5 miles Archaeological Interest - An Iron Age Fort is thought to have been constructed on top of the Craigie. Archaeologists believe it was probably occupied in later prehistory between 1200 BC and AD 400 and may have been reused between AD 400 and AD 700. Evidence of single earth and stone ramparts were found and it is thought that much more evidence will be preserved below ground. In 1958 prehistoric pottery was found along with a fragment of worked shale. There are also remains of a rig and furrow cultivation system which suggests the area was reused in early medieval times. (Historic Scotland) Geology Spot - The strange shaped Craigie is thought to be a volcanic plug which is when an object or hill is created when magma cools and hardens on a vent within an active volcano. The Route - From the Train Station walk towards High Street. Once on high street take the second street on the left (Kirkton Road). Wander along this quiet lane for about 1.5km. Continue post Loanfoot Farm and reach the Springhill Road junction. Cross the road and go through a gate into a

Descend the same way as you climbed until you get to the gate at the grassy embankment. Go through the gate and turn right onto a road then turn left to reach Glanderston Road. Walk along this road for about 450m until it meets Springhill Road. Go right along Springhill Road for 700m or so just passing the bridge over the railway line. Take as small road parallel to the railway which meets with Springhill Road again and continue for just over a kilometre until you meet a roundabout. Turn right onto Kirktonfield Road and at the end of the road turn left onto Main Street. Bees like the temperature in their hive to be a constant 35 degree Celsius and as long as they have access to water they can cool the hive down. On warm summer days bees would be out collecting pollen and nectar, but in extreme heat they turn their focus to gathering water and are well able to adapt. If the hive gets overheated, the bees will collect droplets of water and pass them on to bees in the hive. The moisture will then be spread over empty cells while the bees fan their wings hard and as it evaporates it cools the hive, almost like their own air conditioning.

We have been busy keeping the areas in the village that we look after well watered and weeded. The summer blooms are now beginning to fade making way to the promise of dazzling autumn colours as the nights start to draw in.

The fruit and vegetables have been harvested in the Gateway Community Garden with amazing crops of Winter preparations are also under way with bees receiving Fondant or sugar syrup to blackcurrants, raspberries, replace the honey stores we’ve taken from them, to enable them to survive colder months carrots, peas to name just a as a colony. Over the last few weeks, the Ranger team, the Estate team and our volunteer groups have been busy repairing the path up Windy Hill at Muirshiel Country Park. This has involved bringing in large quantities of pathing materials across the moorland by digger. The staff and volunteers have then been laying the materials and repairing the path drainage, often in sweltering weather conditions. The Ranger team would like to thank the visitors to the park for their patience while the work has been going on, and to those who thanked the staff and volunteers for their hard work. The Rangers have been seeing plenty of summer wildlife while out and about doing our wildlife surveys and patrols. Dragonflies have been very noticeable during the recent hot weather; we have been seeing plenty of the large and colourful Common Hawkers, and the smaller and subtle Black Darters. We were also pleased to see the family of Swallows nesting at the Muirshiel visitor centre successfully fledged 5 young. They have been giving great views hanging around the centre before they set off back to Africa for the winter. We continue to deal with fire damage from disposable BBQs and with litter: we always ask visitors to remember the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which means be respectful of other Park users, the landscape and wildlife, and to leave no trace. At this time of year, we would like to ask dog walkers visiting the Park to keep their dogs on lead or under close control in order to protect farm animals, ground nesting birds and other sensitive wildlife. Bridge of Weir Hillwalkers It has been a busy few weeks for the BoW group. Mid July saw eight of us in the Austrian Alps at Mayrhofen for a week of walking at altitude in searing heat under clear blue skies. The group managed six walking days and managed to party a bit at night in our best tradition. Upon return to home shores, a smaller party went back down to the Borders where the highest peak, in the Southern Uplands, The Merrick, was climbed on a day of fine views. Into August and a very large turnout walked from Loch Lomond to Arrochar and Loch Long via Glen Loin. That walk was a bit swampy in places and we wound up the day with refreshments in the front garden of one of our favourite howffs, the Village Inn in Arrochar. Good to see the new members joining in and new faces who wish to stretch their legs are most welcome. We are a pretty sociable bunch!

Lochwinnoch Community Garden The pandemic changed the emphasis to growing more vegetables and soft fruit for the community and individuals with their own raised beds. In March 2020 Lochwinnoch Food Committee was established - this was a grassroots group looking at local food provision. It included a Community Larder which delivered weekly food parcels for vulnerable and isolating households locally. The Community Garden and the Larder started to work together with the Garden supplying fresh seasonal vegetables including potatoes, brussel sprouts, kale, tomatoes, leeks, onions, cucumbers, courgettes, broccoli, beetroot, lettuce and more!! In September 2021 the Food Committee joined local charity LEAP and the Larder evolved in to a drop-in pantry for all. The aim of the Larder is to provide dignified food provision, tackling food insecurity in a rural village where the nearest food bank is ten miles away and reducing the shocking waste of food going to landfill that was still viable for consumption. A lot of the produce is surplus food from supermarkets which is otherwise being thrown out by supermarkets. But locally grown produce from the Community Garden is perfect as it is food provided without food miles or packaging or carbon emissions from industrial processes. The Larder and the garden continue to work together from their neighbouring spaces within the heart of the village. Later this year the Larder will launch a Community Fridge. The Larder now also has a Seed Library - this is part of Diggin’ It, another LEAP project which support people to grow their own food from their own homes. The initiative is about empowering people to grow their own food, but it is also a wellbeing project which focuses on the many benefits of gardening for better mental health. The idea being developed is to share skills for community seed saving which will allow local growers to stock the Library, and can cultivate locally grown crops which have evolved for the local climate. Seed could also be shared across a network of Scottish Seed Libraries as there are currently no commercial producers of vegetable seed in Scotland. The Community Garden and community members can freely access the Library for organic vegetable seeds. In 2022, the Library will also stock wildflower seeds which will help support biodiversity and pollinating insects.
