Having been unable to hold any live events for the past two years, we eagerly anticipated the Kilmacolm and Port Glasgow Agricultural show at the Knapps Kilmacolm. The weather was glorious, the classes were all filled, the tents were up, and the crowds came!

The Kilbarchan Linen Merchants, 4 John How, another Kilbarchan Linen Merchant John How’s forebears had lived at Dampton in Kilbarchan Parish since the middle of the seventeenth century. They were renowned as surgeons, with eight family members in succession Ruins of Thomas How’s cotton spinning mill at Ballynure, Co. Antrim having practised medicine. John How, however, bucked the trend and set himself up as a linen merchant in the village. He married Mary Barbour, the daughter of Baillie John Barbour, on the 14th February 1767. They had five sons James, John, William, Thomas and Humphrey and two daughters, Janet and Mary. John How was an influential man in the parish and beyond. He owned numerous pieces of land in and around Kilbarchan village and, as a heritor, he had the right to vote in Renfrewshire parliamentary elections and was a founding member of Kilbarchan General Society in 1765. He was also a founding member of Glasgow Chamber of Commerce in 1783 and is said to have been ‘much esteemed all over the county’. The minutes of the Chamber of Commerce refer to a letter he sent to them in 1785 concerning the manufacture of silk and linen in Renfrewshire. This indicates that his weavers in Kilbarchan were working in both silk and linen in the 1780s. Like the Speirs, and Barbour families, John How exported his finished textiles to Dublin where he had established premises in the late 1770s. In the early 1780s John How’s business had been in financial difficulties. In 1781 he sold part of his lands in Kilbarchan to the trustees of Milliken Estate and borrowed £200 in a bond from the Millikens. This appears to have saved his business which continued to operate for the next twenty years.

John How’s manufactury was a family concern, with his sons learning the textile trade. Three of his sons settled in Ulster where they prospered. James was a bleacher, John became a manufacturer in Belfast and Thomas built a large cotton spinning mill in Ballynure, County Antrim, in 1822 and provided accommodation for his workers. The mill operated until 1863 when the American Civil War made cotton unobtainable in Ireland. The imposing ruins of Thomas How’s cotton mill still stand on the outskirts of Ballynure today. Open day at the Health Hub was a big success with over 60 visitors who viewed our all new facilities and chatted to our practitioners and happy patients. Our recently completed Dance, Yoga, Activities and Seminar Studio was ideal for hosting the event. We introduced our CRYO therapy unit which does an amazing job on soothing inflammation and pain reduction, in just a few minutes. It can also be used to improve facial skin conditions and improve collagen levels using a special face mask. Allyson Ross generated a lot of interest in her Semi-permanent makeup therapies. Resident DDP Yoga instructor Laura Kiani announced new evening sessions. Massage therapies by Lilian McMillan also attracted a lot of interest. Queen’s Platinum Jubilee 2022 In June 2022, Her Majesty the Queen will become the first monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee after 70 years of service. Members of the public, schools and community groups can get involved by marking the occasion in a number of ways. Renfrewshire’s Beacon Lighting Service will take place outside Paisley Abbey on Thursday 2nd June at 9.30pm. Over 2,000 beacons are expected to be lit throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands, Isle of Man and UK Overseas Territories, and one in each of the capital cities of Commonwealth countries in recognition of The Queen’s long and selfless service. The beacons will enable local communities, individuals and organisations to pay tribute to her as part of the official Platinum Jubilee Weekend of celebrations from 2nd to 5th June. In Renfrewshire, the service will begin with a piper playing ‘Dui Regnare’, a unique tune composed for the occasion, at 9.35pm. At 9.40pm a bugler will announce the lighting with a specially written bugle call, entitled ‘Majesty’. The Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire will light the beacon at exactly 9.45pm to tie in with beacon lightings in other towns and cities across the UK. As the beacon is lit the Paisley Abbey Choir will sing ‘A Song for the Commonwealth’. As part of the Jubilee year, individuals and community groups can get involved in The Queen’s Green Canopy, a unique tree planting initiative encouraging communities to enhance our environment by planting trees during the official planting season from October 2022 until the end of the year. With a focus on planting sustainably, the campaign will encourage planting of trees to create a legacy in honour of The Queen’s leadership of the Nation, which will benefit future generations. A National Champion from Bridge of Weir Primary School Following on from last month’s report of success in the West of Scotland District Young Writer Competition, which saw entries from Jennifer G (Gryffe High School) and Lana F (Bridge of Weir Primary School) progress to the RGB&I National Final we are delighted to report that Lana has now been declared overall winner (in Great Britain and Ireland!) of the Junior age category. This is a tremendous achievement given the many thousands of entries for the competition from 1,700 Rotary clubs all around Britain and Ireland. In the Gryffe Valley competition alone there were several hundred participants. Her work, on an environment theme, and that of our other top entries will be posted on the Club website www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=1803 Congratulations to Lana and Bridge of Weir Primary School! Lana will receive the National trophy and prize to add to the Club and District awards already received.

Speakers On April 20th, Dr Goutham Ray Consultant Physician at the Royal Alexandra hospital spoke to the club about medical emergencies, focusing on strokes and TIA’s, stressing the importance of prompt medical attention and the greatly improved chances of recovery if attention is prompt. On 4th May Susan Morrison radio presenter gave an entertaining talk on Pastor John Harper from Houston and the sinking of the Titanic on which he perished. On 18th May Dr Rhona Morrison spoke on her career in Forensic Psychiatry and her artistic interests and on 25th May Janice Watt from the Health Board spoke about the Modern Pharmacy. Future speakers include on 1st June Diarmid McArthur – Optician, Musician & Author.

Gryffe Valley Way The signposting of the Gryffe Valley Way is complete. We are grateful to Inverclyde Council, Renfrewshire Council, Clyde Muirshiel Park, Sustrans and private landowners for permission to erect signs. Temporary signs are in place where permission for permanent posts is awaited. Efforts have started to publicise this long distance footpath which runs almost 21 miles from near the source of the River Gryffe along most of the length of the Gryffe Valley. The route follows existing tracks, lanes, cycle paths and footpaths across moorland, alongside lochs and the river, through woodlands and farmland. It is suitable for walking and for much of its length for cycling. It is classed as easy walking with generally only moderate gradients but some of the paths can be muddy. With some care, at road crossings and alongside farmland, it is suitable for walking dogs. Kilmacolm Dramatic Society Our Spring Production of Habeas Corpus turned out to be a resounding success. The cast rose admirably to the challenge of a very demanding play and the local community rewarded our efforts with large and appreciative audiences at each performance. We are so grateful for your continued support. No sooner is one production closed than plans for next begin. Our November production this year will be King Arthur - the Panto. The Spree festival returns for 2022 Paisley’s popular music, comedy and arts festival is back for its 10th year with a thrilling line-up. Live events will take place in the iconic Salon Perdu Speigeltent at Bridge Street from Thursday 1st - Saturday 10th September, promising a fantastic 10-day programme for gig-goers. The festival kicks off with Scottish folk rock favourites Tide Lines with a rousing opening night show packed with soaring anthems. Also performing during the festival is Simon and Oscar of Ocean Colour Scene, ModStuff celebrations, featuring Mod and Northern Soul acts, Tinariwen, Norman Blake, Bernard Butler & James Grant, Barbara Dickson and Rab Noakes, Altered Images to name but a few.

Meanwhile, we are always keen to welcome new members, whether on stage, back stage or front of house. Every production involves a huge support team - and it’s fun! Paisley Colour Photographic Club On Thursday 14th April Rod Davis of Ayr Photographic Society judged the Club’s final and prestigious internal competition of the 2021/22 season: the Henderson Competition. For it, photographers have to submit 3 images to be judged as set. Awards are given for the top placed set in the Introductory (uncontested this year), Intermediate and Advanced Sections, with one image selected as the best overall photograph of the competition. This year’s winning set in the Advanced Section was by Neill Ross for his action based “Focussed”, “Landing Gear Down” and “On The Wire”. In second position was Eddie Middleton with his “Eigg 3 Last Light”, “Eigg 2 Sea Thrift” and “Eigg 1 First Light”. Mark Harris was in third place with “The Organist 2”, “COP26 Red Rebel Brigade” and “Stoneymollan Stag 3”. Eddie and Mark are new and very talented members to the Club. In fourth position was Charles Hamilton with his trademark street portraits “Taif, Trongate”, “John, The Barras” and “The Taxi Driver, Paisley”. Top set in the Intermediate Section was Douglas Forrest with his beautiful landscapes “And Then Came The Rain”, “Golden Marram 2” and “Low Tide at Luskentyre”. Douglas’s win combined with his performance throughout the year in internal and external competitions results in a well earned promotion into the Advanced Section for 2022/23. The best overall image in the competition didn’t come from one of the placed sets. It is the impeccably timed and keenly observed “Grey Heron With Stickleback” by Jim Murdoch. On 17th March Gill Williamson, a past president of Eastwood Photographic Club, judged the third and final bimonthly league competition. The final placings over Jim Murdoch “Grey Heron With Stickleback” the three rounds of the competition resulted in Mark Harris taking the honours in first place, myself in second and Mike Cruise in third. In the Intermediate Section, first place went to Fiona McFetridge. Ollie Desforges was second and with David Scott and Douglas Forrest tying in third place. Fiona’s win combined with her performance through the 2021/22 season sees her also being promoted to the advanced section. Winner of the Introductory Section was Andy Kerr.

In a final bit of news from the Club, recommencement of face to face meetings was finally able to take place from the start of March following almost 2 years on Zoom as a result of the Pandemic restrictions. Home for the Club is now at its new venue in Renfrew Bowling Club on Sandy Road, having relocated there from Renfrew’s McMaster Centre, where it had formerly been based for many years.

Self-isolation support grants As of 1st May 2022, if someone tests positive for Covid-19 and are employed or self-employed and expect to lose income because they are not able to work they may be eligible for a Self-Isolation Support Grant of £225 to cover loss of earnings. Changes to the national stay at home guidance restricts the grant to those who have tested positive for coronavirus on a PCR test or are the parent or primary carer of a child or adult who needs to self-isolate as a result of positive PCR test result and will experience a loss of earnings as a result of their requirement to stay at home.

Paisley Colour Photographic Club At Paisley Colour Photographic Club’s AGM and Prize Giving evening on 21st April the membership had the pleasure of awarding the richly deserved title of Honorary President to Duncan McEwan. Bridge of Weir resident, Duncan, has dedicated much of his life to the Scottish amateur photography scene, having first becoming a member of the Club in 1971. More than half of Duncan’s 5 decades as a Club member has seen him serve in one formal capacity or another, including being President 9 times, Vice President 6 times, a Council member 12 times, External Competition Secretary 16 times, Internal Competition Secretary once, Chairman of the Nature Division of the former Paisley International Exhibition for 8 years and its Overall Chairman for 4 years. At national level, Duncan has previously been added to the Scottish Photographic Federation’s Roll of Honour for meritorious service to club photography in Scotland as a speaker, judge and for his work with the former Paisley International Exhibition. His legendary talent as a photographer has also been recognised by Sony (one of the world’s pre-eminent camera and lens manufacturers) with whom he has served as an ambassador. Duncan was delighted to receive his honorary title, with outgoing President Ken Dow presenting him with a framed certificate and a Scottish Photographic Federation silver medal inscribed with his new title.

Fantastic first Scotland on Tour Event We were delighted to host Louis Rive supported by ‘Archie’ as our first event as part of this year long project to get musicians, venues, sound engineers and others who are part of the Scottish music scene back to performing and earning after the dreadful pandemic. The Lochwinnoch Golf Club provided the beautiful location for the event and the audience were treated to a wonderful evening of musical talent. The next SOT event is on Saturday 16th July with the Sandy Brechin Band a wonderful evening of Scottish music. The full years event list is now complete for 2022 for Lochwinnoch Arts Festival with more to come in 2023!

The results of the local election were of a huge relief to me. I am enormously grateful to those who gave me their ﬁrst preference vote and just as grateful to those who gave me their second and third votes. All the messages of congratulations have been very moving. I will endeavour to continue the work I am known for. By the time this magazine drops onto your mat, Bonnie Bishopton will have brought out a number of colourful planters throughout Bishopton. This is a group which I started and it is wonderful to see how they have progressed. In a similar vein Brighter Bridge of Weir continues their good work and much of what Bonnie Bishopton do will be modelled on them. The council is investing in a number of parks. I am aware of issues with many of the parks in my Ward and what the council won’t sort I am looking for other means to do this. The Horsewood Rd Park in BoW is one of these and the biggest problem is that the council does not own the footpath from the park down The Glen to Main Street. One of my immediate tasks will be to carry out improvements to the path, particularly removing trip hazards. I am keen to form groups of volunteers that will look after the needs of the parks, either hands-on or hands-off. Calling themselves “Friends of….”, they may even be in a position to apply for grants for improvements. If you are interested then please contact me. As well as newsletters, articles for the Gryffe Advertizer and other newspapers, my Facebook page, I have been looking to start a website for posting my news, however it looks like a blog is the way to go initially. Watch this space as they say.

During coronavirus lockdowns, films at The Bridge were suspended and we only resumed film shows at the end of last year. Sadly audiences have been very small since our return and that leaves us with a problem. The Bridge needs an annual licence from Filmbank Media to show films at a cost of £149 and we can only justify the licence fee with a larger audience.

We ended our spring meetings in April with a mini show and a talk and activity session of exercises we can work on at home. It was a well attended evening and the show had a good range of entries, mainly on a wartime theme. The points prize winners were Mabel MacPherson, Joyce Bennie and Brenda Lindsay. Joyce was also awarded the Duncan Cup for her Easter Bonnet and the Muirhead Cup for the best clootie dumpling. Pat Allan was winner of the Woodrow Cup for her ﬂower arrangement.

I was delighted to be re-elected in the recent Council Elections. I heartily thank everyone who voted for me and promise to continue to work hard and do my best to represent our local communities. I also offer my congratulations to my fellow ward Councillors on their electoral success. I will be continuing to campaign for local bus services to come into public ownership, so we can improve services in our rural communities. We need bus services that puts people first and I will be pushing hard for a publicly owned municipal bus company to be set up to improve services across the county. We must also explore ways of expanding the rail network, restoring the Kilmacolm to Glasgow rail line would help alleviate much of the commuter congestion on the overloaded A737 and M8 each day. I will also be working on trying to keep any Council Tax rises as low as possible, as the cost-of-living crisis will spare no households as all our bills soar. The money raised locally should be spent as efficiently as possible. For example, I will be pushing for a review on road surface repairs; one sensibly priced repair is surely better than numerous temporary cheap fixes that end up costing more in the long run. Active travel is an issue that interests me and I am keen to encourage people to make their journeys as sustainable as possible. The more commuters using buses, trains and bicycles mean fewer car journeys, reducing congestion and our carbon footprint. All new cycle lanes installed must be fit for purpose, ensuring safe access for cyclists and minimal disruption to road users. Together we must all start taking the bold steps to face down climate change in any way we can. As always, please do get in touch if I can be of any assistance on any issues important to you.

ward 10 cllr alison Ann-dowling I’m delighted to be re-elected as your councillor, I’m truly honoured. I intend to work hard over the next five years on measures to tackle the cost of living crisis and the local issues you’ve told me matter to you and your families. My priorities include continuing to apply pressure on the council to implement a more efficient approach to road and footpath maintenance, in particular fighting for higher quality patch repairs on our roads and footpaths and faster resurfacing of roads deemed beyond repair. It’s unacceptable for cyclists and drivers that our roads are given patch repairs that seem to crumble in a matter of months. These temporary repairs are a false economy and do little to relieve pothole problems in Houston, Crosslee and in Brookfield. Speed reduction and road safety measures across key travel corridors also remain a key focus. I welcome the announcement of a pedestrian crossing on Houston Road and Neuk Avenue, Houston. A Proposal of Application Notice has been submitted on behalf of Stewart Milne Homes for the proposed development at land to the west of Barochan Road, Houston. Further proposed housing development in the ward has raised concerns from local people around how roads, schools, GP and other NHS services will cope. My view is that planning permissions to build new developments should be contingent on a commitment to the council to fully assess and address the impact on these services. Additionally, we need to see developers building homes to meet the needs of downsizing elderly populations and starter homes for younger generations who struggle to afford large new builds in villages they’ve called home all their life. An online consultation process for the proposed Stewart Milne development will be conducted over a period of three weeks, I await your feedback and views with interest.

ward 10 cllr audrey doig I have to express my most heartfelt thanks to the people of Linwood, Houston, and Crosslee Ward, who gave me such a resounding vote of confidence at the recent Council elections. I have had the pleasure of representing my ward now for the last fifteen years and in all that time I have always tried to fight for the interests of my ward and all its residents. I pledge to you all that I will continue to do that to the best of my ability in the coming Council term. Elections always bring changes and I am delighted to welcome my newly elected running mate, Cllr Robert Innes, to the ward. Over the coming months we will both be visiting the Community Councils in Houston, Linwood, and Brookfield together, so I can introduce him to all office bearers and promote our new advice surgery schedules for us both. At the last full council meeting, just prior to the elections, there was a major report tabled on the state of local bus services and the various options open to Renfrewshire Council under the Transport Act 2019, including the municipal re-regulation of buses as a possibility. This will be a major issue going forward for myself and Cllr Innes to take up, to ensure that we can get a superior service not only for Linwood, Houston, and Crosslee Ward but also for Renfrewshire as a whole. As soon as Cllr Innes and I have reconfigured our advice surgery schedules over the next few months we will publish them as soon as possible.

I have to express my most heartfelt thanks to the people of Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch, who gave me such a resounding vote of confidence at the recent Council elections. I have had the pleasure of representing Johnstone, Kilbarchan, and Lochwinnoch now for the last ten years and Howwood for the last five years In all that time I have always tried to fight for the interests of my ward and all its residents and I pledge to you all that I will continue to do that to the best of my ability in the coming Council term. The Council elections have left Renfrewshire still as a Council of Minorities. At the time of writing this the first Council meeting in the new term is yet to be held, but it looks very much like a minority SNP administration yet again. However to temper that, if all the opposition members vote in unison, they would outvote the SNP by one vote. At the last full council meeting, prior to the elections, I managed to get a motion approved calling on Renfrewshire Council to investigate the options for increasing the powers of Community Wardens to deal with anti social behaviour. It is not acceptable that anyone should have to suffer this in 2022 so I am determined to give our Community Wardens the increased powers they need to help the police stamp it out.

The event attracted 45 attendees and we were treated to two interesting speakers and some stimulating discussion around the presentations. Dementia Friendly Lochwinnoch We had a lovely outing to the Burns Centre in Alloway on Friday 29th April, we were blessed with beautiful weather and the Spring countryside was breathtaking. The group of over 30 were treated to a superb afternoon tea at the centre and a good number also took in the museum and the gardens of the beautiful centre. A special thank you to Jim in the Wee shop for the donation of lovely sweeties for us to eat on the coach trip! We are having our ﬁrst Tea Dance on Friday 13th of May at Lochwinnoch Golf Club at 2pm and a ﬁlm show ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ on Friday 24th June in the Calder church. The group are so happy to be meeting up again and enjoying renewing old friendships.

Howwood Parish Church Hello to all in Howwood and round about. Heading now into summer - hopefully a better year than last year. We are having a service on Sunday June 5th to celebrate the 70th Anniversary of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth. It would be very good for as many people as possible from the village to join us. Our service and Sunday school both start at 10am each Sunday with a cup of tea or coffee and a chance to talk to old friends after the service. Please join us and bring some friends. solas bereavement group The Solas bereavement drop-in group will be meeting in the Lounge of the Kidston Hall, Kilmacolm on Thursday 9th June at 2pm. Bridge of Weir Choral Society is back!

Bridge of Weir Choral Society performed its ﬁrst concert for over two years at the end of April in St Columba Church, Kilmacolm. It was a source of great joy to the choir, delighted to be back singing with friends after the long break and hopefully also enjoyed by our loyal and supportive local audience.

In January of 2020, preparations were well advanced for a performance of Brahms’ Requiem, in collaboration with Strathaven Choral Society, our conductor Christopher Barr’s other choir, but we all know what happened next and sadly this performance was not to be. As with so much else over the last couple of years, hopes of a restart were raised and dashed a number of times, but in November 2021 we held a tentative few rehearsals, masked and distanced initially and interrupted by the omicron variant until the beginning of 2022, when we made tentative plans for a concert. We chose Vivaldi’s Gloria and Faure’s Requiem, both pieces relatively well known to most of the choir, as we had been unable to rehearse as fully as we normally do – this was no time to be giving ourselves a big challenge! Fortunately no new variants wrecked the plans this time, and the concert was able to go ahead. Unused to performing, there was a car crash of a dress rehearsal on the afternoon of the concert which spooked everyone, but on the night everyone rose to the occasion and delivered the performance, supported by organist Gordon Cree and soloists Emily Mitchell, Lynn Bellamy and Timothy Edmundson. Our next event will be the ever popular Christmas Concert, with the usual mix of well-loved carols combining with longer pieces, followed by a classical piece for our Spring 2023 concert. Rehearsals start in September, with a new time and venue – we will be in Kidston Hall, Kilmacolm on Wednesday evenings, with a provisional start date of September 7th at 7pm. The choir is not yet back at full strength, and we are very keen to recruit new members. There is no audition process, so if you’d like to have a go, please come along. You will be made most welcome. Music is supplied, and there are numerous rehearsal aids available, both online and in CD form, for those who don’t sight read (like most of the existing choir), to allow practice at home between rehearsals. It is hard to convey the satisfaction of having a ﬁrst look at some big scary piece of music, thinking “Oh Lord, I’ll never manage this” and then ﬁnding, six months later, that you do. The dust has now settled on the local elections. I know many of you were disappointed you didn’t have a vote and I share that disappointment. This election was the first election since I turned 18 that I didn’t vote as I live in this ward. It was not the fault of the three candidates however as we had no influence over the decision not to have an election as that is set out in legislation. In the recent election nine Labour candidates were elected along with eight SNP, two Conservatives and three Independents, making 22 Councillors in total. I have been re-appointed as the Leader of the Labour Group and at the time of writing this article I was in negotiations with the other political groups over who is appointed to the various positions in the Council at the statutory meeting on 19th May. I will update you in my next column. Work has been completed on the £80,000 renewal of the surface of the Multi-Use Games area (MUGA) in Birkmyre Park. The previous painted macadam surface has been replaced by a short pile multi-sport 2G artificial turf, which is more suitable for a wider range of sports, including netball, basketball, tennis and football. This new investment by the Council and the Birkmyre Trust complements other recent investment in the park with improved drainage on the rugby pitches, a new small grass football pitch and the re-establishment of the putting green. I have received representations from residents in Leperstone Avenue about the problems caused by dog walkers parking in the vicinity of the access to the trail up to Knockmountain. I have asked Council officers to explore options for visitor parking for this local amenity. In the meantime I would appeal to people who use this trail to park further away so as not to inconvenience local residents or leave the car at home if you live nearby.

Kilmacolm Civic Trust Kilmacolm Civic Trust has been gathering recordings for their AudioVisual Oral Reminiscences Project. Although recordings had to be postponed due to Covid restrictions, to date there have been 27 recording sessions with another nine in the editing process. All the recordings capture the essence of the village as it was in times gone by and there are now 19 videos available to view in the KCT online library at https://www.kilmacolmcivictrust.org/ about-kilmacolm/search-our-videos.html The KCT also holds an extensive archive of material relating to the villages of Kilmacolm, Quarriers and the surrounding countryside. The items have been donated to the Trust over many years by individuals and families past and present who have lived here. It includes postcards, photographs, personal written reﬂections, press cuttings, books and other publications collection. This will allow Civic Trust members and others, in the UK and worldwide, to search for and access many items online. The aim is to open up the collection in a way that has not been possible before. The Archive is stored in 20 – 30 large

ward 1 cllr david wilson Kilmacolm Primary School had a well attended parent council. Results of attainment levels at P1, P4 and P7 were shared with the parents and results in Writing, Reading and Numeracy were consistently in the 91% to 99% range. There is, at last, recognition at Scottish Government level that Literacy and Numeracy are prerequisites of a successful education. I hope to see the dumping of the ineffective Curriculum For Excellence in Secondary schools which has caused our decline in International Education league tables. St Columba’s Pipe Band competed at the Gourock Highland Games and will contend at the major Pipe Band Championships this year, ﬁrst at the British in Gourock on 21st May. This event is sponsored by Inverclyde Council. All Grade1 bands will be present. The Scottish Strategic Transport Projects Review has reached its National Report stage. Some 9 new lines and 16 new Railway Stations were submitted for review, but concentration will be on city connections. This will be a disappointment to those wishing to reinstate the line to Kilmacolm.

Signiﬁcant works are happening on the A8 between Woodhall and Langbank from 8th May to 9th June which may mean diversions at certain times through the village on the 761. I was delighted to obtain grants through SPT transport for Ardgowan Hospice and Port Glasgow Voluntary Transport Group. Both volunteer groups provide an invaluable service to the community.

schools & Sports Kilmacolm Playgroup The children of Kilmacolm Playgroup have had a fun and very busy time over the last 6 months. We provide a wide range of activities to promote physical, creative, imaginative and social development while inspiring confidence and building friendships. Each week we follow a new theme where the children are encouraged to play, sing and do age-appropriate crafts whilst interacting with children their own age. As part of our varied program the children loved having a visit from some calves that were brought to us by Moovin’ Milk. We enjoyed seeing the animals and got to sit in the big tractor. One of our parents, who is a GP, also came to give us all a ‘Health check’. We had a great fun day looking at x-rays, dressing up as surgeons and trying out various bandages, plasters and stethoscopes. Kilmacolm Playgroup operates during school term time on Monday, Tuesday & Thursday from 9.30am -11.30am for children aged 2 years and 4 months to 5 years old. We also have our Toddler group on a Wednesday morning 10am 11.30am, this is a dropin session that you can attend with your children from birth onwards. Houston Primary News Glasgow Science Centre Primary 6 pupils thoroughly enjoyed their trip to the Glasgow Science Centre. In class they have been studying the human body and put their knowledge to good use in very many practical activities whilst they were there. They also attended an informative presentation on the Human Body where they learned about digestion and watched some fascinating experiments. It was a wonderful experience for our pupils, as they have not been on a school trip since before COVID.

Kilbarchan Primary Kilbarchan Primary Wins Euroquiz Regional Final in Renfrewshire The Euroquiz Regional Final in Renfrewshire took place on Wednesday 27th April. The quiz consisted of 4 rounds, focusing on different specialisations. Kilbarchan Primary were victorious after a hard-fought tie break. Team Kilbarchan are now turning their focus to the Euroquiz National Final in Edinburgh on Monday 13th June. The final will take place in the debating chamber of the Scottish Parliament.

Spring Planters Primary 7 pupils up cycled this planter by painting and personalising it with our HPS logo. They then planted some spring bulbs and now some of them are in bloom. Spring is here!

Diabetes Fundraiser Primary 5 pupils raised an amazing £552 for people who have Type 1 Diabetes. The pupils had to run 100 laps of the playground each day for a whole week. Thank you to all those who donated so generously and supported our very fit pupils.

Deﬁbrillator Houston Primary School now has its very own life saving defibrillator. It is attached to the fence at the back of the school.

The Queen’s Green Canopy The Eco Representatives and Mr Patterson have been busy planting young saplings in our school grounds. The trees were provided by the Woodland Trust and it is part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations. Plant a tree for the Jubilee!

Primary 7 Football Team Our P7 mixed team is going from strength to strength. They beat Thorn Primary 1 - 0 and East Fulton 1 - 0 in their most recent matches. The all girl team will play for the first time this session at the end of April.

Digital Well-being Award We have been awarded our Digital Wellbeing award. The validator was so impressed with the whole team and especially enjoyed speaking with our pupils. We shared all the work that goes into keeping our pupils safe online, informing parents and the nurturing ethos of the school.

They have an intuitive knowledge and understanding of the world and issues around them not just within our own community, but further afield.” Team Kilbarchan expressed eagerly, “It was an amazing experience and we are elated to have won. It was such a wonderful surprise! We are grateful we were able to compete and enjoyed seeing pupils from other schools. We are looking forward to the final. The experience of visiting the Scottish Parliament is an honour.” Mrs Doyle (DHT) and Miss Montgomery (CT) added, “The work pupils have put into the quiz has been extraordinary. They have poured hours of hard work both at home and at school into broadening their knowledge and understanding of the history, culture and societal changes in Europe over the past few centuries. This has been such a positive experience for both staff and pupils. We cannot wait to visit the Scottish Parliament on 13th June.”

Wedding Day Bliss One of our class teachers, Miss Schoolar, got married at the Brig o’Doon House Hotel on 9th April. She said it was a beautiful day and that everything went really well. She now loves being called Mrs MacPhee and said that her Primary 1 pupils are all already excellent at remembering her new name.

Primary 1-7 Learn More About Autism On 22nd April, pupils in Primaries 1-7 learned more about Autism at their online whole school assembly. Some children spoke about their experiences of being friends with children who have Autism and others spoke about having family members with Autism. Our assembly ended with one of our pupils reading ‘I am an Aspie Girl’. The pupils in P1-7 enjoyed listening to the information in the book and learning about Autism from other pupils.

Duchal Nursery St Columba’s Green Blazers and Green Fingers Given our rural surroundings, it is unsurprising that the Great Outdoors has a significant inﬂuence on the learning and teaching in our school. For example, when the Early Years children found a slightly exhausted bumblebee outside, our fantastic Early Year Practitioners were able to turn it into a valuable learning experience. Seeing the bumblebee up close sparked so many questions for the children. As the bee looked “tired”, it made them wonder if bees could yawn. They also wanted to know what bees liked to eat and why we have bees. With so many amazing questions to answer, they are going to do a ‘Bee’ topic to try and find out more.

We always love a visitor to Duchal, but recently we had an extra special visit from a new born lamb who was just a few days old. The children were absolutely mesmerized by her and enjoyed getting such a close up view, hearing about how to keep her safe and well in her early days. It is so important for the children to learn in a variety of ways, not just in a classroom. We are looking forward to our summer trip to Fruin Farm to learn more about farm life. As the end of year approaches fast, our older children are ready for that next step on to primary school, it has been lovely to welcome teachers from the local primary schools in Kilmacolm, Bridge of Weir and Houston where our children will be progressing to in August. Before that we have plenty to squeeze in – Sports Day, the Summer Concert and our Teddy Bears’ Picnic as well as the usual fitness sessions with Colin Cox, French with Madame, our topic work and plenty of time outside in the garden and park! New Entries to Duchal: We now offer free pre school education for 3 – 5yr olds every day (during term time) through the funded nursery scheme in conjunction with Inverclyde Council, ensuring Duchal is available to all children in the local area (including those living in Renfrewshire). This all ties in with the work that the Early Years class have been doing about how to look after the planet. They have been creating their own compost, recycling and planting bee friendly ﬂowers. Further up the school, Junior 5 spent the day at Whitelee Windfarm recently, touring the site and taking part in STEM workshops to understand how renewable energy, such as wind power, works. This was a great experience for all our pupils, who all thoroughly enjoyed their visit. It’s not just Junior School who are enjoying their time in nature. Mr McLaughlin and his band of dedicated helpers in the Gardening Club have been working hard making sure that grounds at Senior School are looking their best. They’ve been prepping beds, weeding, pruning, and planting and we’re now able to appreciate all the effort that they put in throughout the year. Hopefully we will get good weather for the remainder of the summer term, as our pupils spend even more time outdoors on Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, John Muir Award activities and much, much more. Abbey Nursery We have kicked off the return of our sports coaching sessions with our new hosts - Superstar Sporty Tots! The children develop a variety of skills across the weekly themed sessions with both jungle and space being some of the children’s favourite themes so far. They are able to use their imagination as they are taken on different journeys under the sea, through the rainforest and even into prehistoric environments as they explored the land of Dinosaurs igniting lots of conversation between staff, children and their parents.

Bridge of Weir Primary Getting Back to ‘Normal’...

As restrictions in schools have lifted it has been brilliant to get back to the following:

Clubs: It has been great to be able to restart after school clubs, and what a selection we have on offer: football, athletics, cooking, craft, gardening, Bikeability, STEM, netball, and choir to name but a few. Thank you to all the pupils who enthusiastically attend, with extra thanks to the school staff and volunteers who help out. Trips: It has been amazing, once again, to finally ‘get out’! Pupils have already been to Kelvingrove Museum, Glasgow Science Centre, Lunderston Bay, and even along to Houston Road park! P6 swimming lessons have made a come back, as have competitive football games return for girls and boys. And what a fantastic time the Primary 7s had at Ardentinny Outdoor Education Centre. They enjoyed a wide range of activities from gorge walking and rock hopping, to search and rescue. The great outdoors is a wonderful classroom!

Visitors: We are very much enjoying having visitors back into school. Strathgryffe Tennis Club is offering squash lessons to P5 and we are looking forward to taster sessions in Tae Kwon Do for the whole school. Our Open Doors event was on Thursday 19th May when parents and carers came in and reminded themselves what the school looked like! (It was even a time for us to tidy up!) This month’s book recommendation ... As we near the time for our submission to the Scottish Book Trust Reading Schools award here is another book recommendation. This month the classroom assistants would like to recommend the author Paul Jennings. They attended a course recently and loved hearing his short stories being read. Check out his work as you will love it too!

Congratulations to Alexander Farmer who is the 2022 Renfrewshire County Boys stroke play champion. Alexander won the Caven Trophy played at Cochrane Castle with a fantastic display of golf and has now qualified for the Freedman Trophy (the County Boys Match Play Championship) to be played at Kilmacolm later in the year.

Our Junior section is showing great strength and depth as our junior team embark on this year’s Newton Shield matchplay league and our younger members, who are just starting out in golf, are playing in the Golf Sixes junior league – which is a fun, team-based competition, designed to give young golfers an early experience of playing for their club and giving them the buzz to want to play more. The future is bright at Kilmacolm Golf Club. We are delighted with the success of our 2nd Ladies Academy with another group of ladies enjoying an introduction to golf. With group lessons and practice sessions over 3 months the golf bug is definitely spreading around the local ladies, we look forward to seeing their progress over the summer. Kilmacolm hosted the Renfrewshire Seniors Championship and the Ladies West Vets Spring Meeting in May. The weather made golf a stern test, however the course was looking splendid thanks to the Greens team after a challenging dry spell. Gardeners and greenkeepers were the happy ones when the rains finally arrived!! This month once again the ladies of Old Ranfurly have been thoroughly enjoying their golf, keenly participating in a range of competitions in spite of some horrendous weather. These have included Stablefords and the Monthly Medal. The inclement weather has in no way dampened ladies’ spirits and we have had excellent turnouts. On Saturday 7th May the Jean Aitken Memorial Trophy was won by Lesley Dardis with a score of 65 and Lilias Lamont with a score of 68. Well done and congratulations to both. After their golf ladies can relax in the recently refurbished club house and enjoy refreshments and food courtesy of our excellent caterers Stewart Catering. Up and coming events include Ladies Day on Saturday 4th June, the Rosebowl Competition on Sunday 12th June and our own Ladies Open on Thursday 7th July cost £18 per couple. It’s a Greensomes competition and all ladies are welcome. You can book through Golf Empire. Places fill up quickly so best to book early to get your preferred time. Ranfurly Castle Ladies

Strathgryffe Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club

April was a busy month at the Castle with Competitions in full swing. 12 couples took part in the Coronation Foursomes on 20th April. Rosemary Ogilvie and Evelyn McDermid were the winners with an excellent score of 42 Stableford points. They will now go forward to represent the club in the National event and we wish them luck.

The outdoor tennis season has started with the Dunlop West of Scotland Summer Season 2022. Strathgryffe entered 8 men’s teams and 8 women’s teams offering some great competitive tennis. Dallas McMillan Solicitors, the main club sponsor, are supporting the Men’s 3rd and 4th Teams, and the Women’s 2nd and 4th Teams. Tactuum are sponsoring the Men’s 8th Team.

Sunday 25th April was a beautiful day and a team of ladies travelled to Elderslie Golf Club for a friendly match. Despite the hosts having a depleted team, due to Covid, they were able to change the format of play and Ranfurly came out the winners. A lovely day was had by all. The Marie Curie competition was played over 2 days - Saturday 23rd and Wednesday 27th April - 38 ladies competed between the 2 days in very good conditions. The overall winner was Kate Scott (29 handicap) 41 points, runner-up was Loretta Campbell (53 Handicap) 40 points. A big thank you to all who helped raise £151 for the charity. The May Medals began on Wednesday 4th May. Silver winner was Anne Robinson (14) net 73, Bronze winner Rosemary Ogilvie (23) net 69. 7th May Silver winner Allison Murray (12) net 75, Bronze winner Kate Scott (27) net 70. Renfrewshire County Ladies Golf Association held the County Championships at Erskine Golf Club on 4th May with 54 ladies taking part. Lesley Robertson of Ranfurly Castle had the best gross score of 75 and best net score of 72 winning the Peggy Clark Trophy. Lesley was also a member of the Renfrewshire Team competing in the West of Scotland Championships held at Glasgow Gales GC on 8th May. The team won the Senior Trophy beating the team from Lanarkshire by 2 strokes. Congratulations to Lesley on her excellent golf.

The Greenlees Team began their campaign on Monday 9th May when they were at home to the team from Loudon Gowf. Unfortunately the winner on the day was the weather, with the match having to be abandoned due to exceptionally heavy rain and strong winds. It has now been rescheduled for later in the summer. The club is planning a fun tri-am stableford competition to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on 25th May. It seems that a piece of string will be an important piece of equipment and some of the holes will be renamed! All will be revealed on the day. The golf will be followed by a Right Royal Spread and we are keeping fingers crossed for good weather on the day.

out & about Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society Gardening Club This month, members have a special visit arranged to a local garden before it opens to the public. Details of the visit to Wraes have been forwarded to members and plans are underway. Those who have been before are looking forward to this ‘return visit’ and to seeing again the magnificent shrubs and interesting layout and features in this large garden. If it’s a good day, there will be the bonus of panoramic views over Renfrewshire. In May the Club held their annual Plant Sale (after a Covid gap) and enjoyed a warm and pleasant morning chatting and selling to passersby. A wide selection of herbaceous, general shrubs and young plants, nurtured by local gardeners, were on sale along with bedding plants brought on by the community support group at Parklea Nurseries near Port Glasgow. Also available were free pots of Forget-Me-Nots which were handed out to children. This is an easy and reliable plant for gardeners and hopefully growing one will encourage beginners to give gardening a go.

Brighter Bridge of Weir

is entering its busiest time of the year and the Group could do with some help. If you are a resident who likes what the Group does, why not give them a hand? You don’t need any special skills, just a willingness to muck in for an hour or two now and then. You won’t get paid - none of the Group does - but you will get fresh air, exercise and a blether. And it is very rewarding work in other ways. The Group meets once or twice a week, usually on a Monday morning at 10.30am, and will spend a few hours doing what’s required. During the summer they may go out more often, but there’s no obligation on anyone to attend or to stay for a specific length of time.

At the May meeting members learnt more about local recycling undertaken by “Enva” - specifically the conversion of our brown bin contents into brown gold for our gardens. Currently recycled ‘green compost’ is available for collection or delivery from Enva’s depot in South Lanarkshire but the company is actively looking for sites here in Renfrewshire where this product can be stored and made available to the community. Meanwhile, all our gardens benefitted in May from the earlier mild and drier Spring conditions. We’ve seen clouds of Cherry and Apple blossom along with luxuriant Camellias and Magnolias or jewel-bright Rhododendrons and Azaleas all looking blooming great. After a benign Winter and a warm Spring, dare we hope for a hot and sunny Summer? To this end, keep your water butts topped up!

The Point of Resolution

Clyde Muirshiel Spring is well underway and the Ranger Service are continuing our seasonal wildlife surveying work around the Park, such as butterfly and breeding bird surveys. We have also been busy re-painting the benches and fences at Muirshiel and edging the car parks across the Park. We continue to deal with abandoned campfires and large amounts of dumped litter; we always ask visitors to remember the Scottish Outdoor Access Code, which means be respectful of other Park users, the landscape and wildlife, and to leave no trace. At this time of year we would like to ask dog walkers visiting the Park to keep their dogs on lead or under close control in order to protect lambs and sensitive wildlife. Recently, both the Castle Semple Conservation volunteers and the Duke of Edinburgh group volunteers have been hard at work on a wide range of tasks. At Muirshiel they have been removing old tree tubes and cutting down sitka spruce saplings along the trails, plus they gave the area around the visitor centre a tidy up. At Castle Semple both groups have been controlling the growth of invasive plants such as pontic rhododendron and few-flowered garlic (see photo below). The Conservation Volunteers also gave the bins and planters around the Castle Semple car park a fresh paint job.

As part of Renfrewshire Council’s commitment to improve biodiversity in the area, a portion of the playing field at the Lochwinnoch Annexe have been given over to growing native wildflowers. The ground near the River Calder has had some turf scraped - hence the embankments. Wildflower seed from a wet meadow mix was sown and firmed into the scraped areas, with the help from the Primary 5 pupils from Lochwinnoch Primary School.

Bridge of Weir Hill Walkers The BoW hill walkers were back in the borders in late April trekking on one of Scotland’s oldest drove roads up from Traquair - the Minch Moor. This way has existed for over 1,000 years and was used by Edward I as he marched north. It was also used by Montrose on his retreat from Philipshaugh and by monks from Kelso Abbey in getting between monasteries. Generations of drovers have passed this way with their cattle on the way to market. Now it is part of the Southern Upland way. It was a fine day albeit with a cold Spring wind but the views soon opened up. En route we passed the Cheese Well where the wee folk expect contributions of cheese morsels (or in these days coins) to be offered at the spring which emerges by the path between two small standing stones. The route also features the Point of Resolution. Ovals carved into the heather which change shape depending on the perspective. Finally we reached the flat heathery dome of Minch Moor with views all round the Border hills. A friendly fir tree offered shelter for lunch. After the walk we met up at Kailzie Gardens for coffee and cake. Hopefully May will see some better weather after the first outing had to be cancelled due to rain and high winds. Planned walks include tow in Perthshire.

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society The Plant Sale and Coffee Morning hosted by the Kilmacolm Horticultural Society in May was enjoyed by many members and friends, delicious home baking was provided by the committee and helpers - thank you to everyone who contributed. The raffle prizes were gift wrapped in hampers by the Cross Cafe girls - again many thanks for such generous help. Parklea Branching Out always provide the plants on a sale or return basis - their top quality plants are always a main attraction for the Society’s gardeners and members. Two years without a fundraising event during lockdown, we are so pleased that the day was a success, we raised £705 to help with the costs of putting on a Flower Show on 3rd September this year, and we hope that the Show will be as big a success as the Coffee Morning/Plant Sale. Colourful Kilmacolm Although our bulbs are now a distant memory, we hope that their bright colours helped you through the early months of the year. Inevitably there is always a fallow period between bulbs and summer flowers but for all of us at Colourful Kilmacolm there is still plenty to do, whether holding our AGM, organising our stall at the local Agricultural Show, or tidying up the gardens at Carriages, Market Place and Port Glasgow Road lay-by. Never a dull moment! Our photo shows some of those who recently weeded and cut back at Market Place. Probably the most obvious improvement was getting rid of the weeds and moss between the paving slabs. Late May or early June, depending on whether we have had a reasonably warm spring or not, is when we plant up for summer, so you can check if we have been able to do that yet. Kilbarchan and District Beekeepers It’s that time of the year when beekeepers concentrate their efforts on swarm control and prevention. Inevitably, as is natural for honeybees, some colonies will be in the process of planning or even actioning their intent. And while the Queen is ready to take off with a sizeable number of bees, a new Queen will hatch and take over the job of building up the remaining colony. Meanwhile, the bees who have gone with the old Queen will be looking for a new home, hence the swarms that can be spotted while scouts search. However, with various techniques and manoeuvres at the disposal of beekeepers a mass exodus can be avoided. To new members of KDBA this can seem a bit daunting, but a good mentor from the club will help with information and experience. In the coming weeks a lot of beginners will be getting hands on experience, though these fascinating creatures never lose the capacity to surprise even long-standing beekeepers. Signs of a build of honey will also be visible in the hive this month as numbers of foraging bees increase daily and provided the weather is good there will be the first honey to harvest. Hives will be on the increase as new Queens are established and moved to make new colonies with some of the existing nurse bees and foragers. A sharp lookout has to be kept for signs of disease and infestations of varroa mite building up.

Lochwinnoch Community Garden The community garden goes from strength to strength! The garden group are now doing more fruit and vegetables in the garden and supporting others in the village to grow their own! The group are increasing the number of containers and hanging baskets in and around the village and bringing on thousands of seeds and plug plants to fill them. Watch out for our theme of yellow and blue flowers in support of Ukraine! There will also be a plant stall at the Gala on the 11th of June for you to buy plants to help the garden group continue their work. In addition , we were delighted to get support of £2200 from the Community Council for containers plants and soil etc. We continue to keep the War Memorial flowers and containers along with Johnny Mair who keeps the grass beautiful too! (The small plants will become the yellow and blue flowers for Ukraine, the War Memorial and spring flowers in the garden)

KDBA get contacted quite a lot over the next few months with reported sightings of swarms, the majority of which do not turn out to be honeybees, but bumblebee colonies, especially Tree Bumblebees or white tailed bumble bees or mason bees, none of which we can help with. How to Identify and Deal with a Honeybee Swarm

Wasps and honeybees are about the same size, but wasps have alternating black and bright yellow body stripes. Honeybees are brown, with paler brown or dirty yellow bands on the body. Bumblebees are more rounded and ‘hairy’.

If you do think you have Honeybees, and the bees have only appeared within the last few days or are clustered in the open hanging from a branch of a tree or bush, then you have a newly arrived swarm.

Bumble bee While a local beekeeper will do their best to help, there are situations when they can’t - when it is difficult or unsafe. The removal of a free-hanging swarm in the open is usually much simpler. Please bear in mind that beekeepers are not a free pest control service and are giving up their own time to help. RSPB Lochwinnoch We are in June already and the school holidays will be soon. With warmer weather and light nights more folks are getting out and about and enjoying the benefits of the outdoors. The reserve is alive with bright green vegetation, beautiful wildflowers, and butterflies and bees an amazing time to visit the reserve. Our trails are full of life with youngsters all around with blue, coal and great tit, robin, house sparrow, goldfinch to name a few in our woodlands. Our lochs are bursting with chicks, ducklings, and cygnets - you never know what you might spot! In June we have the longest day of the year, it is called the summer solstice. The name comes from Latin and means ”when the sun stands still” because of how long the day is. Our shop continues to sell all your bird feeding requirements, binoculars, telescopes, and fancy goods. So why not pay us a wee visit, you can walk our beautiful trails or why not relax with a hot or cold drink in our seating area situated within the visitor centre? Our friendly staff will keep you updated about what’s around the reserve.

Kilbarchan Smile It’s been another busy month for Kilbarchan Smile. Vegetable planting is well underway at the Gateway Community Garden and everything is enjoying the mild, moist weather and the longer days. Unfortunately the grass and dandelions also love this weather, but thanks to the kindness of Robbie Gray of Cuillin Landscapes this has been tidied up in the productive part of the garden, leaving a wilderness area for the bees and wildlife to enjoy. Thanks also to W B Smith Trees and Turf Ltd who have donated two truckloads of wood chippings which we have used to create new pathways around the garden. The Mary Barbour Garden has now had the seated planters installed and the garden is gradually becoming a fitting tribute to this amazing Habbie. The Big Spring Clean this year was blessed with glorious sunshine and a good turnout of volunteers, collecting over twenty bags plus various larger items including wooden cladding, footstool and ride on unicorn. As you can imagine, we had a lot of fun while helping to keep the village beautiful. We are looking forward to meeting everyone at Lilias Day this year, where we will have a stall and hopefully sign up a few more volunteers to the group.
