Party in the Park After 2 years of no Lilias day, the Lilias day committee are absolutely delighted to bring you Party in the Park on Saturday 11th June! The event will bring all the fun of Lilias day with a few new additions to help us party. There will be music from Samba Ya Bamba, ceilidh dancing and lots of new entertainment for the kids. We’ll also have our Lilias day favourites; the epic tug of war, the music tent showcasing up and coming bands, the food village, stalls and, of course, our favourite Lilias day characters. The only downside is that we won’t be able to hold the parade this year due to more challenging logistics. Local history The Kilbarchan Linen Merchants, 2 The Barbour Family in Kilbarchan The first Barbour manufacturer and linen merchant in Kilbarchan was Baillie John Barbour (1701-c1770). He married Janet Fulton in 1726 and had three sons and four daughters. Their first house was in Church Street. As a Baillie (judicial officer of a Barony) John Barbour was a man of importance and influence in the village. John’s brothers, William and Robert were partners in the family concern. John was also an entrepreneurial businessman and his linen manufactory was not his only commercial enterprise in Kilbarchan. In the 1740s he owned a candle factory in the village which exported large batches of candles to the West Indies. By 1739 Baillie John Barbour had built a weaving manufactory in the village, originally for the manufacture of thick linen and soon after built a bleaching factory. He engaged local weavers, who worked looms in their own homes, and business prospered. The Barbours, like the Speirs, exported their fine linen goods to dublin and London. In the late 1750s Robert Barbour, John’s brother, was responsible for the export trade. As a packman or commercial traveller, Robert conducted business, not only for the Barbours, but also for other Kilbarchan and some Paisley manufacturers. Baillie John’s sons, John, William and Humphrey, joined the family business and after the death of their father, the three brothers expanded the family business. The Barbours, like the Speirs, had established premises in dublin. Both Baillie John’s eldest son, known locally as John of Law, and the youngest son Humphrey, divided their interests between Kilbarchan and Ireland. William, the second son, attended to the weaving and bleaching business at home. Although the Barbours’ main exports were finished textiles, from the 1770s Humphrey Barbour was also a thread (as opposed to textile) manufacturer in Kilbarchan. Humphrey used superior linen yarn imported from Ulster and the Barbours exported the finished thread back to Ireland. One large consignment of 276 lbs of unrated Scotch thread and 12 lbs of filler thread, along with 4,848 yards of plain lawns, leno, cambric and catgut, 152 yards ornamented with cotton, was shipped to dublin by the Barbours in november, 1784. By the 1780s, with the gradual demise of the linen trade in Scotland, the Barbours continued to concentrate their main interests in Ireland and a third generation John Barbour moved to Lisburn where he set up a factory settlement for spinning thread on Plantation Stream in 1784. A dam was built on the stream, and his twisting mill, driven by animal powered machinery, was a large circular building 33 ft in diameter and seven to eight feet high. Two factory buildings, two factory houses and two blocks of workmen’s houses completed the site. The Barbours’ commercial interests in Kilbarchan had ended by 1800. Humphrey had moved to glasgow as a wine merchant; John died in 1794; and William’s bleaching business in Kilbarchan failed in 1799. However, that is by no means the end of the Kilbarchan Barbour story! Johnstone History Society We will be holding our April meeting on Tuesday the 12th April at 7.30pm in the Masonic Hall, Collier Street, Johnstone. Our speaker will be graham Fulton his subject is The Paisley Civil War, The Town of Paisley and its connections to the American Civil War. Our March meeting was our AgM, as there were no nominations for any of the positions the office bearers were re-elected. This was followed by a talk on the history of garden gnomes delivered by our secretary valerie Reilly. The Museum continues to open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10.30am till 4pm. At the moment COvId restrictions are still in place. There is a wide selection of books pamphlets and maps for sale and as we now have a card machine in place it makes purchasing much easier. These items can all be purchased online and for via PayPal.

Help feed hungry children with Mary’s Meals People in Renfrewshire can help to feed hungry children living in the world’s poorest countries by becoming a Mary’s Meals volunteer. The charity, which feeds more than two million children every school day, is looking for volunteers to join its Paisley group and help raise awareness of its work in the local community. This could include giving talks in schools and churches; holding screening events for Mary’s Meals’ inspiring films; or helping to organise fundraising events. Emma Hutton, head of grassroots engagement at Mary’s Meals, said: “We simply couldn’t feed two million children every school day without our wonderful volunteers – including the members of our Paisley group. “We would love to welcome more volunteers from Renfrewshire into our Mary’s Meals family, so that we can keep reaching the little ones who rely on our life-changing meals. We have lots of exciting opportunities and provide training and support throughout.” Mary’s Meals serves a daily meal to children every school day in 20 of the world’s poorest countries, including Ethiopia, Haiti, Malawi, Liberia, South Sudan, Zambia and Yemen. The promise of a nutritious meal attracts hungry children into the classroom, where they can gain an education and hope for a brighter future. The charity’s work is only possible because of many dedicated volunteers across the globe – from the people in the UK who raise awareness, to those who cook Mary’s Meals for the children in their community. Bertha, 11, loves learning. The nutritious mug of porridge she receives at her school in Zambia allows her to concentrate in class and work towards her dream of becoming a teacher. Bertha says: “I get to school at 9am and wait for the porridge. Renfrewshire’s Big Spring Clean is back! Thousands of dedicated volunteers are set to head out on litter picks this April as they support Renfrewshire’s Big Spring Clean, part of the award-winning Team Up to Clean Up campaign. The annual event was postponed last year due to the pandemic with Renfrewshire supporting Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Summer Clean event instead, but the popular event is back for 2022 and excitement is building already. Previous events have seen thousands take part in litter picks across the month of action, with the campaign’s sister event Spotless September seeing almost 1,500 people take part in 430 litter picks – which is more than 14 every day. Linda Kerr and Kathreen Cannon are avid volunteers and can’t wait to take part in the Big Spring Clean again this year. Linda said:” Team Up to Clean Up is a wonderful way of getting out in the fresh air and doing some good to make your community look better. “It’s great for meeting new people too, passers-by stop you just to thank you, and there is a great community of lovely volunteers who are always supportive. “The Big Spring Clean would be an ideal time to join the Team, new members are always welcome.” Renfrewshire Council will provide litter pickers, hoops, bibs and bags for anyone or any group wishing to take part in a litter pick, and the StreetScene team will collect the bags of litter afterwards too. The event forms part of the Council’s £2.5million investment in the Team Up to Clean Up campaign which supports volunteers, but also invests more in roads sweeping, gully clearing, fly tipping prevention and litter picking. I enjoy a cycle round our quiet lanes but recent cycle lane issues in Johnstone highlight the need for cycle lanes to be swept. Debris is just one reason why cyclists may not use them. Houston & Killellan Kirk A real moment in time - A Houston Community Creative Writing Project for Book Week Scotland 2021 In November 2021, thanks to a grant from the Scottish Book Trust for Book Week Scotland 2021, we hosted a Houston Community Creative Writing Workshop “A Real Moment in Time” in the Killellan Halls. The theme was “Celebration”, and some people from the Houston community came together to explore different ways to reflect on why we celebrate Houston. The workshop was facilitated by writer and author Lorna E Hill, and we had a wonderful morning sharing our stories of Houston through different styles of creative writing. We created a Houston Haiku, and described our favourite walk around Houston and wrote a personal letter to Houston, that began with the line: Dear Houston, I celebrate you because….. Finally we gave one sentence that summed up what Houston meant to us, and Lorna created a pantoum poem using the sentences. We would like to thank The Scottish Book Trust for awarding us the grant, Lorna E Hill for her wonderful facilitation and to Sugar Fairy Cakes for the wonderful cupcakes that kept us going!

ward 10 Cllr Audrey Doig I was delighted to vote through the recent proposals at the 2022/23 Budget meeting of Renfrewshire Council, last month, on the basis that it 07768 130 935 incorporated significant investment cllr.audrey.doig@ for my ward. renfrewshire.gov.uk One key commitment that will be very much welcomed by the whole school community at Gryffe High School is the £1.2 million to carry out refurbishment of the synthetic pitches, to cover four schools, including Gryffe High. There has been much interest in recent years in Gryffe High having the benefit of such a state of the art amenity, so I am very proud to be able to deliver that. At these challenging times we need to do all we can to support our small businesses. So I used my vote wisely at the Council Budget to increase the money in the Retail Improvement Scheme to £150,000, a £50,000 increase on the levels given last year. This gives grants to small businesses to renovate their shop fronts, and will help to give village businesses in Houston, Crosslee, and Brookfield the edge they need to remain competitive. For our villages I also very much welcome, a new Conservation and Heritage Grants Scheme of £250,000 for property owners, and a new £200,000 increase for the Villages Investment Fund, which has been so successful in supporting, for example, various village and green spaces projects over the last four years in Houston, Crosslee and Brookfield.

Since the Russian invasion of Ukraine, potentially one of the most significant events in our lifetime , I raised an emergency motion at the most recent meeting of Renfrewshire Council 0300 300 1274 condemning utterly the action by Russia, 07534 156 007 and calling on the Council to do everything cllr.derek.bibby@ possible to assist the people of Ukraine and renfrewshire.gov.uk provide support to the international and local charities who are actively involved in the relief effort.

Midweek Fellowship. This short informal service is in the small hall on Wednesday mornings, starting with coffee/tea from 10.30am.

It is a matter of pride that Scotland has opened its arms to those people who are fleeing for their lives. Renfrewshire has a fine tradition of welcoming refugees and I am sure that this will continue.

Against this background Renfrewshire Council set its 2021/22 budget on the 3rd March. Among the proposals approved were further investment in village community halls, town centres, the school estate and child mental health provision.

We will resume on Monday 9th May from 9.15am -11.30am in the hall, off Steeple Square when we look forward to welcoming tots aged 3 and under along with their Mums, Grans, Grandpas to enjoy time with all the toys and of course the bouncy castle. The cost will remain £1 per family and this includes juice/tea/coffee and biscuits. We are so looking forward to resuming after more than 2 years’ break due to Covid. Easter Extravaganza This Coffee Morning takes place on Saturday 2nd April in Kilbarchan Parish Church halls and grounds, off Steeple Square, with an egg hunt, decorated egg and bonnet competition. There will be the opportunity to buy Easter novelties and gifts as well as delicious home baking. Entrance is £3, children £1 and includes hot cross buns with coffee.

The rise in council tax will be unwelcome for all who are seriously affected by the current cost of living crisis. I will be urging the council to look at ways in which it can support those in our communities who are being hardest hit. Finally an update on some issues locally: Following concerns raised with me, I have asked the council to undertake a safety assessment in regard to trafﬁc issues at Lochwinnoch Primary School. A site visit is planned with the members of the community council in the village which will identify any necessary improvements. The four Ward 9 councillors met with representatives of One Ren (formerly Renfrewshire Leisure) and Renfrewshire Council in Howwood Village Hall to raise the community’s concerns in regard to the condition of the hall and accessibility. One Ren and the Council have been urged to clarify the current availability of our community halls for the use of various organisations, the picture at present being somewhat confused.

Kilbarchan Eco Community Event

On a wider point the delay in refurbishment to the Steeple Hall in Kilbarchan continues 3 years after investment improvements were approved.

The discovery of rot during the work on the McKillop institute has resulted in further unintended work on that building with a knock on effect for the commencement of work on the Steeple Hall.

As part of our response to tackling local environmental issues, the Kilbarchan Parish Church Eco Group has arranged a meeting and you’re all invited. We’re very keen to bring together everyone in the local area who has an interest in helping to make Kilbarchan a more environmentally friendly village to live in. We’ve been fortunate enough to secure time from a couple of external speakers who will give us an overview of how best we can make a difference to the health and wellbeing of our community - both at present and for the future. Fraser Millar, who until recently worked for Zero Waste Scotland, will speak about some of the ways that we are currently taking forward the Eco Agenda at a Scottish level and Fiona Catterson, who lives in and who brought up her family in Kilbarchan, will talk to us about the successful journey that Oakfield Trinity Ecumenical Church in Paisley have recently had in achieving the Eco-Congregation Scotland Silver Award for churches. I’m sure we all have lots to learn to help put Kilbarchan on the Eco map There will be an opportunity over a cup of tea or coffee to ask questions and to make suggestions as to how best we can all work together to make Kilbarchan an even better place to stay. You can also put forward your own thoughts, ideas and experiences and maybe even take the chance to get involved and do your bit! Come along and bring a friend, you can be sure of a warm welcome and an interesting evening.

I also recently met with council officials to look at progress made in regard to the problem of temporary street furniture, such as road closed signs and A boards, which often make pavements difficult to navigate for visually impaired and disabled people, and which at the moment with a number of roadworks being undertaken is particularly problematic. I raised this issue at a council meeting last year and it was met with cross party support. The council is currently consulting on what can be done to alleviate the problem.

Howwood Parish Church Hasn’t this year gone quickly. Soon be April and Easter. We have arranged joint Easter services with St Pauls, Johnstone. Please note dates and times. It would be great if as many as possible manage to attend.

For your diaries, the Howwood Village Fete will take place on Saturday 18th June and the annual Litter Pick will take place on Saturday 9th April. How important is having a Community Council within your ward? I attended Johnstone Community Council Meeting in February where Tracey and Mhairi of the Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group asked for help in obtaining permission to return and being allowed to use the facilities at the Town Hall as they have done over many, many years. Since the pandemic and the Hall being used for inoculation’s etc, they had concerns about their future. I took up their plea for help and contacted our Environment Services. They subsequently have now confirmed that they have spoken to Phoenix and that the group’s pantomime will be going ahead this year and discussions will take place for their requirements for the rest of the year and the future. Johnstone Community Council, like Howwood, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch, are all in urgent need for more people to come and give one evening a month of their time to further help their own communities for the better. Please give becoming a member some thought and volunteer. This report in the Advertizer will be my very last one as I am not seeking re-selection to Renfrewshire Council at the coming election and will be retiring after a ﬁfty-year stint in local politics. I have been privileged to meet so many lovely people within Ward 9 both as members of the four community councils and as constituents requiring my services. Christian Aid Week 15th-21st May Kilbarchan & Brookfield Last year’s Christian Aid Week was again disrupted by the pandemic, so we delivered envelopes throughout Kilbarchan and Brookﬁeld, but asked folks to return their envelopes to the church hall, or to donate electronically via the JustGiving page on our website. We were humbled by the generosity of our local community, who donated more than £4,700 which, with gift-aid, added a further £800+ to Christian Aid’s funds. For 2022, we still need to be mindful of Corona virus, so intend to follow last year’s format and deliver donation envelopes to as many households in the local area as we can, asking folk to return their donations to a central point at the end of Christian Aid Week. For this, we require volunteers to deliver envelopes to a street or group of houses in their area during that week. There will be no need to call to collect or re-visit houses. This work is vital if we are to provide support to those in need in some of the poorest communities in the world, amongst them are those worst affected by Climate Change.

Howwood Community Council

specifically raise the issue of the dilapidated condition of Howwood Hall together with its management and ongoing use.

As part of the of the overall wellbeing of the residents of Howwood there are perhaps two main issues which effect a lot of us in and around the village.

Understandably, ALL of the Councillors fully supported our aims and together approached Renfrewshire Council with our concerns.

1. Speeding and Traffic Management 2. The upgrading, maintenance & management of Howwood Hall After many years of pressure from Howwood Community Council regarding speeding and traffic and more recently with The Howwood Hall, both of these important points of concern seem to be now moving in the right direction. With support from our local elected Renfrewshire Councillors, there is perhaps light at the end of the tunnel.

Speeding and Traffic Management

The current results are that there have been inspection visits to the hall and further meetings to plan a way forward for its reinvigoration, making it once again a vibrant hub for the people of Howwood. With the right vision, it can be re-made into an attractive and welcoming place for us all - now and for the future. Two of our elected Renfrewshire Councillors, Bill Binks and Derek Bibby, have decided to stand down and we would like to thank them for the work they have done over the past few years. Both have worked in their own different and undoubtedly patient ways helping to give Howwood a voice and we wish them well for their plans ahead.

As you may have noticed, there is currently a traffic survey underway within Howwood, Houston and Kilbarchan and there has been an online “notice board” where, if possible, we all could make our concerns and suggestions known. It was pretty well supported with lots of contributions which hopefully will make a difference. Once this has all been taken into account, ideas will be presented to Renfrewshire Council by approximately June of this year. Howwood Community Council will continue to press for solutions beyond that point. Meanwhile, as you drive through and around Howwood, please just slow down. Take care. It’s easy!.... And these days just think of the fuel and money you will save!

I think there is a strong case for a direct bus link between Port Glasgow and Johnstone railway stations that can serve as a ‘backbone’ service for other connecting buses.

There has been a resolution to the long running affair of the caravan parked in Churchill Road outside Kilmacolm Primary School. This has taken a significant amount of negotiation and the Council has agreed to sell a parcel of land to the janitor to allow him to park No surgery in April his caravan off road. This was a legacy issue, but was not the fault of the 07766 992 294 school or the janitor. A £300m refurbishment, including driverless trains, is approaching completion, with new trains being delivered. The National Transport Trust has recognised the importance of the “clockwork orange” by awarding a Red Wheel Heritage Plaque which will be mounted at the original iconic St Enoch Station Ticket office. The application for 100 houses at Planetreeyetts has been refused on appeal by the Scottish Government. The reporter indicated that there was a shortfall in the 5 year housing land supply, but this was outweighed by landscape adverse impact and sustainability. The West of Quarry Drive appeal by McTaggart and Mickel is awaited. Our Covid 19 Partnership Recovery Board sits monthly. Recently cases of Covid have peaked again in Inverclyde, it is difficult to completely get on top of this infection. We are continuing with our schools being open and are taking significant economic measures to aid the recovery. We received a presentation on Inverclyde’s Historic Links to Slavery. It was an important briefing and identified place names and family names including James Watt our best known historical character. The authors were tasked on Inverclyde’s connections to slavery and they felt it was best told through education. We cannot undo the past, but should be aware of it. The pavement out to the War Memorial will now not be resurfaced until next year, but the hedge has been cut back. Complaints about anti-social behaviour and dog fouling have increased, unfortunately the latter at Birkmyre Park. Please let me know. Police and Wardens can concentrate on specific areas or individuals. The dog fouling in the Avenues is quite bad and there is also no excuse for hanging dog poo bags on branches. The estate is doing its best to plant rhododendrons to enhance the walk. I was disappointed not to have the Bonfire and Fireworks in 2021, but having had a conversation with Lord McLay, the owner of Knapps, we may manage a fireworks display in November this year. Lawrie Campbell, responsible for Ordnance, is recruiting his team! The Cargill Centre and its Café are up and running again. It is on farmers market Saturdays that you realise what a fine village centre we now have.

Cllr Stephen McCabe The Council’s budget and Council Tax for 2022/23 was set on 24th February, which was after the deadline for my March column. Agreement was reached between five of the six political groups for the Council’s remaining £6m budget gap to be closed through the use of £4m of reserves, savings and budget adjustments totalling just under £1.4m and a below inflation No surgery this month council tax increase of 1.95%, which 01475 712 020 (ofﬁce hours) will raise just over £620,000. The Stephen.McCabe@ budget tries to strike a balance Inverclyde.gov.uk between cuts to services and jobs, 10 Victoria Gardens, increases in charges for services and Kilmacolm, PA13 4HL a rise in council tax. Without the use of £4m of reserves these would have been significantly greater. While those who pay full council tax will face a small increase in their charge, over 32,000 or 81% of households in Inverclyde will actually pay less in council tax than they did in the current financial year due to the Government’s £150 rebate scheme. For those in the higher banded properties that don’t qualify for the rebate weekly increases will range from 66p to £1.22. Inverclyde’s Council Tax increase is the second lowest in Scotland with most Councils increasing council tax by 3% or above. For 10,000 low income households that are either in receipt of council tax reduction or exempt from council tax the budget makes provision for a one-off payment of £300 to each at a cost of £3m to the council. Most of these households will also receive the Government rebate of £150 meaning that in total they will receive support of £450 to help them with the rising cost of fuel bills and other household essentials. At the time of writing, tenders had been returned for the £80,000 upgrade of the Multi-Use Games area (MUGA) in Birkmyre Park, with work due to start before the end of March. The Council has also allocated £75,000 for the first phase of footpath improvements in Kilmacolm village centre. A number of local projects have been included in the roads investment programme for 2022/23:

Lochwinnoch Arts Festival Lochwinnoch is one of Hundreds of Venues across Scotland to give the live music industry a welcome boost, supporting the creation of hundreds of concerts and performances at much-loved arts centres and community venues across Scotland. Lochwinnoch Arts Festival is part of this exciting initiative, with more than 120 artists set to perform at 100 venues across the country. The project, which has been created and managed by Active Events, was made possible by £750,000 of Scottish Government backing and will focus on increasing the number of opportunities to showcase and enjoy live music, while bringing exciting acts to the doorstep of city, towns, villages and rural communities. Genre-spanning acts will appear across the width and breadth of the country, with rock, pop, jazz, classical, folk, trad and acoustic genres all being showcased. The first two events in Lochwinnoch are in Lochwinnoch Golf Club: Saturday 23rd April - Louis Rive and Archie

Louis plays music like Tom Waits and Judy Collins, Michael Marra, Liz Lochhead, and Hamish Imlach. Louis has been on the BBC as part of ‘Upload’, a BBC Introducing Programme. The success of this led to a show during the 2021 Fringe Festival as part of the BBC Radio Scotland Stage. “Archie” is a young musician from Lochwinnoch who has performed in venues from Glasgow’s iconic King Tut’s to the Royal Albert Hall. St. Fillan’s Primary School Children’s Mental Health Week During the month of February, we have been engaging in learning around good mental health and wellbeing. Each class has been exploring key themes from our Health and Wellbeing programmes and we know that we all have the right to experience good mental health. In PE, we have been using fitness as a way of helping us to feel good. The younger children have been promoting good mental health within our school ground by chalking happy pictures to share with our families and friends.

Wider Achievement: In St Fillan’s Primary, we have been exploring the importance of wider achievement and how we can celebrate our achievements and successes out with school. We have created our own display board and children have been bringing in their medals, trophies and certificates to share with the wider school community. Through acknowledging and celebrating our achievements, we have discussed the development of our skills in terms of learning, life and work. It has been lovely to share the rich learning that is also taking place out with school.

World Book Day: As part of our mission to foster a love of reading and books within our school community, we are looking forward to taking part in the ‘World Book Day’ celebrations on Thursday 3rd March. We will come to school dressed as our favourite characters, take part in a class ‘Book Swap’ and enjoy reading and listening to stories from a variety of authors. We will also take part in online Assemblies and enjoy bedtime stories with cookies and milk. New Play Area For Howwood Pupils The pupils at Howwood Primary are delighted with the new addition to the playground. Two years ago they made a plea in the Gazette for help and, despite the turbulent times, they now have a new play area with a pirate ship and house to keep them busy at playtime. The new play equipment would not have been possible however without the generous donation from one of our Grandas, along with further support from the school Parent Council and Funds R Us committee. Robert Keay, director at Caledonian Tyres Ltd and SSH Recycling Ltd, donated a large sum of money to support the school where his three grandchildren attend. He visited on completion and the children were thrilled to show their Granda their new area. The Parent Council have also been fundraising tirelessly with an online Christmas Fair, fun runs, craft packs and scratch cards all helping towards the cause. It is a great addition to the playground. We are now planning to renovate an unused area in to a vegetable growing area. Please let us know if you can help.

Abbey Nursery, Houston

Duchal Nursery Our fabulous Nursery Chef Lindsay has been busy offering baking sessions with our Grasshopper children in the playroom.

The children across the nursery have had a large baking focus during February and March learning a variety of new skills such as: following instructions both verbal and written using a recipe, a range of mathematical skills including measurement, weight and estimation and health and wellbeing skills when learning to share, turn take and the importance of infection control measures during food handling.

With the arrival of spring there has been plenty of outdoor activity at Duchal Nursery, planting of seeds, football coaching and personal training in the park, as well as campfires and play at the mud kitchen. We are busily preparing for the Kilmacolm Show and are delighted that this will be going ahead again, it has been missed over the past couple of years. The children will have their entries in the industrial tent and we will be hosting a stand, so please come along and visit. There is great excitement as we learn about the lifecycles of butterflies and frogs, safe to say there will be plenty of tadpoles and caterpillars being carefully surveyed as they make their transformations. No doubt with a great level of anticipation as the children arrive each day. There is still time to apply for a funded place for those children turning 3 from August 2022. Bridge of Weir Primary What a busy time we’ve been having as a little bit of normality returns.

Clanranald Trust Clanranald Trust visited P5 and P6/5 to carry out a workshop on their topic, The Scottish Wars of Independence. What a lot of fun they had while learning so much about this period of history. Rose from P5 explained they’d got to see the armour from that time including helmets, swords, and chain mail. Everyone got a chance to see how heavy it was. Rose even got to try on the armour from a Scottish warrior. They even had a ‘fake battle’ in the formation of a hedgehog with the spears sticking out as the spikes. “We made such cool poses,” said Rose. They were shown a very sharp axe – no-one got to touch that one! Tyler said “It was really good fun,” and he learned a lot about how they would stand and he enjoyed holding the sword. The people were really nice. Clanranald leaders have told us that our children were very well behaved, interested in what they had to say, and a pleasure to work with.

Girls’ Football Tournament After 20 years, on March 16th we were delighted to send an all-girls football team to the Active Schools competition. The girls won all 7 games and did not even concede a goal. Everyone in school is delighted and Mr Barrett is one proud coach! This Month’s Book Recommendation Rory from P2 says he loves reading and so a favourite book is really hard to decide, but he finally settled on The Great Eggscape. It is a very funny story by Jory John and illustrated by Pete Oswald. It is about an egg called Fred chilling in a carton while his egg friends go on an eggscape. No spoilers - but Rory says you will love this book if you are age 4-12!

Pupils celebrate the official opening of Dargavel Primary Schoolon 4th March

Langbank Primary School Cyber Week Scotland In order to raise awareness in staying safe online, the digital leaders of Langbank created lots of activities for the boys and girls in our school as part of Cyber Week Scotland. One of these activities included reading some traditional stories which had a digital twist and some very important messages about staying safe online. Our P6 leaders were fantastic at leading stories and discussion in P2/3. The digital leaders are looking forward to visiting each class very soon and delivering master classes in areas such as coding, digital literacy and learning to use digital media tools. Recently, they worked with p1 to create short stories using the tool book creator. They are great digital role models within Langbank and continue to demonstrate fantastic leadership skills.

Space Music Project

The event saw pupils in P3 signing a song in front of invited guests with special performances by the school’s dance group and choir. The purpose-built school ensures that children can benefit from having natural light and spacious learning environments through an open plan layout. The space is flexible to support many types of learning activities as well as having quieter areas for children when needed. With outdoor learning spaces, including a secure roof terrace area with planters for gardening and carrying out STEM lessons, covered canopies for outdoor learning, planted nature trails, and informal seating areas for children to eat their lunch and relax. There is also a multi-use games area that the community can use outside of the school day. Councillor Jim Paterson, education convener for Renfrewshire Council, unveiled the plaque commemorating the school’s official opening. Gerry Carlton, head teacher at the school, said: “The pupils did a fantastic job leading today’s ceremony and giving the guests a guided tour of the new school. Our performers showcased their many talents, ably supported by the Dargavel staff.”

Our Primary 4-7 pupils are working with musician Oliver Cox exploring the topic of space through music and images. The children are enjoying using classroom instruments, body percussion and other new instruments as part of the project. The children are creating musical sequences and we look forward to hearing them progress throughout the project

Primary 2/3 Play Friday afternoons are a great chance for us to develop a range of skills through play. Primary 2/3 have been working on a range of skills. They have created art from the puddles in our playground. Using STEAM skills, learners tried to build tall structures by cutting out heart shapes from card. The class are particularly interested in cutting recycled fabrics to create new items such as bunting or clothes for a toy or jewellery for their teacher. They have also explored more sustainable play and how we can transform cardboard into new ways to play.

World Book Day/Literacy Blurb At Langbank we harness any opportunity to spark joy around reading. This year our school aim was to make books and reading the main focus for World Book Day. The pupils enjoyed a number of engaging activities where they were able to read for enjoyment and discuss books with those around them. These included reading in dens by the campfire, identifying the school mystery masked reader and participating in live book reviews in our playground story chair. Pupils then enjoyed a bedtime story through our tuck in tales virtual story time event in the evening. It was a great success and all of our pupils were caught with their nose in a book throughout the events in the day.

St Columba’s Spring is finally in the air at St Columba’s, and the Early Years class have been out in the garden planting potatoes and tending to their flower beds. They have also been taking the time to learn all about the life cycle of chickens and frogs. And it’s not only the Early Years that have been learning about new life! Junior 4 took a lovely sunny walk down to the River Gryffe recently to release some trout that they had been caring for as part of the Clyde in the Classroom project. The children were incredibly excited to finally get to send the trout on their way to their new life in the river, and we were even able to share the experience with parents and grandparents. Spring in the school also means that we are starting to think about transitions. A key transitional phase for any child (and their parents!) is the move up to “big school”, from Nursery (or Prep as we call it) to Junior 1. This crucial developmental step is often fraught with worry about the unknown. At St Columba’s, we make it as easy as possible thanks to our Early Intervention Programme. A dedicated member of staff, one of our highly qualified Early Years Practitioners, is tasked with streamlining the journey for children by moving with them into Junior 1 from our Prep class. They are part of the team, which encompasses the Class Teacher, a Support for Learning Teacher and a dedicated Teaching Assistant, ensuring that no child can be missed, and every child encouraged and supported in these vital early stages of education. Our new Lady Captain, Fiona MacPhee, hosted the first Social event of her Captaincy on 10th March .

With Spring finally here, it’s time for those fair weather golfers to return to the golf course. Our Season Opener on 19th March has over 150 entries, Megan Briggs, Club Captain, has encouraged all sections of the club to get involved, with men, ladies and juniors all out on the course. There’s a “Beat the Pro” competition in the indoor studio with all proceeds going to our Club charity of the year – The Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice, and chef Neil is laying on a scrumptious buffet after the golf. With a sunny weekend forecast, it will be a fantastic start to the season.

Around 25 ladies enjoyed an evening of cheese and wine provided by our fabulous caterers , Stewart Catering.

In preparation for the new season, well respected long time member and previous Lady Captain, Maureen Mitchell (pictured accepting a token of thanks from Fiona MacPhee Lady Captain), treated the ladies to an update of the rules of the beautiful game. Maureen’s presentation was supported by diagrams and was enthusiastically received by new and experienced golfers alike. In fact it did become a bit more interactive than intended at times. This year the Ladies section will be raising money for Dystonia www. dystonia.org.uk. This charity is very close to Fiona’s heart as her husband has suffered from Dystonia for around 40 years. The fundraising kicked off with a raffle drawn on the evening .

Our team in the Pro shop have organised coaching for our juniors over the Easter holidays as well as some group coaching for our members to kick start the season. Get in touch with them to take part or book yourself a lesson to give your game a boost! In 1977 a group of Kilmacolm ladies decided to host a bridge afternoon in aid of Erskine Veterans Charity. This year we were delighted to welcome bridge players back to the clubhouse after last year’s virtual event and raised £886. This brings the total raised since 1977 by the Kilmacolm Golf Club bridge events the tremendous grand total of £22,732. Well done and thank you to all who have supported this event over the years, and especial thanks to Rosemary Hammond for organising the event so efficiently once again. The Ladies Section enjoyed a fabulous start of season social night with over 50 ladies attending, after a delicious meal provided by Neil they were thoroughly entertained by talented duo, Gordon Cree and Cheryl Forbes, with a feast of songs, music and laughter. We are looking forward to reporting on plenty of golfing stories and successes as the warmer weather appears and the season really takes off.

Bridge of weir Hillwalkers The early part of the year was marred by high winds and rain, but heading into March there are signs of improving walking conditions. Recently the BoWers have been stravaiging in the Glen Douglas Hills and had a superb day of weather at Dunkeld when they walked on a loop taking in the Loch of the Lowes. Future trips will see an ascent on Ben Chonzie (Ben-Y-Chon) and outings at Kenmore in Perthshire and at Traquair in the Borders. The Walk...

Ardgowan woodland bluebell walk by Rona Simpson

Longer route about 5 or 6km – although shorter routes are possible

Getting there:

Park at the Marina then make your way to the beach to begin the walk

Easy Mostly flat, some road, some forest tracks & some coastal path

This walk is steeped in history and bathed in glorious Scottish views. If you are lucky enough to come in April/May, you will hopefully get a chance to see the bluebells which carpet the woodland floor each year. Start from the Beach path and follow the coastal path past the Laird’s Dyke towards Lunderston Bay. On a clear day the views across to Dunoon and the Argyle hills are spectacular on this part of the coastal path. Return the way you came for about a kilometre and then if there are no sheep with lambs, there is the opportunity to cross a field into the woodland area opposite via a gate. From here follow the trails in any way you please. On route you could choose to take in the 15th century castle tower originally part of Ardgowan Castle (see Map). Previous to this there was a wooden fortification on the same site, used to ward off Vikings. This was an important battleground for Robert the Bruce who fought the English here in 1314 and ended 10 years of their occupation. Keep heading west to return to Laird’s Dyke Cove and the beginning of your walk.

Laird’s Dyke Cove This cove was used by smugglers in the 18th century to save them paying the excise taxes just down the coast! The goods were then stored in the Sheilhill Glen caves. The Dyke was built by the Laird in the beginning of the 19th Century as a place to moor his yaugh. There was a bathing house here too, the remains of which can still be seen.

Ancient Trees There is a wide variety of trees to discover on this estate. Many of them are designated ‘Ancient of Semi-Natural origin’. From natives such as oak and beech (debatable, I know) to more exotic types such as Corsican Pine, Japanese Larch and American Sitka Spruce. There are many ornamentals including a variety of Rhododendrons.

Ardgowan House This was built by Robert Adams between 1797 and 1801. It is a grade A listed building and has been owned by the same family – The ShawStewarts - for over 600 years. They are direct descendants of King Robert III of Scotland. Within the precious items stored within its walls is a hat purportedly belonging to Napoleon!

We’ll be in Abbey Close / Bridge Street (if you’re visiting for first time – it’s a stunning part of town) on Friday evening from 4pm - 10pm, with a big day of foodie fun on Saturday from 12noon – 9pm. This is a free event.

Kilbarchan and District Beekeepers Association There’s a real sense that life is taking off at our hives. On warmer days bees can be seen out flying to collect nectar and pollen to boost new brood. It’s a welcome sight indicating that the Queen is building up to her maximum egg laying potential. For beekeepers there is always a temptation to open the hives up for inspection too early in the spring, but patience is crucial to ensuring that the bees don’t suffer an unnecessary chilling, which could be fatal to the colony. It’s also time to do some spring cleaning in the hives and misshapen or old combs or those clogged with old hard pollen or any damage not likely to be repaired by the bees, removed and replaced. Thanks to the blossom of blackthorn, flowering currant, gorse, willow and cherry there should be rapid build-up of bees in colonies. Though they might be an irritation to gardeners dandelion flowers are a good and plentiful source of pollen and on warm days, nectar too. Usually at a first inspection of the year beekeepers look to make sure the Queen is present. If she is new to the hive, she may well need to be marked with an appropriate dot of colour on the hard part of her thorax so she can be easily spotted in future. There’s a cycle of colours beekeepers may choose to use, that changes every year so it’s easy to tell the age of the Queen. Many keepers also clip the wings of a new Queen (something painless to the Queen), to stop her flying off with a great many bees in her wake, a loss to the beekeeper and a nuisance to the public. Over the last couple of years many new members have been welcomed into KDBA and this spring new members will be starting out on their beekeeping adventure and to open a hive of your own new bees is an exciting moment. The bee that we all keep is the European or Wester honeybee Apis Mellifera. It is the most widespread species of honeybee in the world due to its habit of building nests in cavities and hollows of trees. And it’s this habit that allows us to keep bees in hives – just as people have done for 5000 years. No wonder keeping your first bee hive is pretty special.

Pollen is the only source of protein for honeybees and it also provides minerals, lipids and vitamins. Like all animals’ bees need ten essential amino acids for building tissue which must come from pollen. So provided the temperature is at least around ten degrees bees will be out collecting. Meanwhile our beekeepers will be checking the hives to ensure that at the end of winter and at the start of another possible cruelly cold spring there are still enough stores or supplementary fondant or sugar to ensure their bees will make it through spring. Leaving it to chance or mythology isn’t an option these days.

Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society Gardening Club Environmental issues will be our subject on Thursday 14th April. We will be joined by a representative from Enva Recycling who will explain how the company tackles recycling garden waste - just one of the products they deal with on a daily basis. Enva convert as much waste as possible into new materials, eg. garden compost, biomass fuels, animal bedding and much more but there is an area dedicated to composting garden and green waste. This results in an organic compost which improves soil structure and nutrient content and is recommended as a soil enhancer to be mixed with top soil. Last month’s meeting launched our new gardening season, and was held in Freeland Church Hall. This is a more comfortable venue where members and visitors can mix and mingle and still retain space. We had a chat about seed germination and suitable seed composts followed by a demonstration on how to start off our seeds. Members were then able to select seeds, containers and soil and fill these with a flower or vegetable seed of their choice to then take home, gently water and put on a warm windowsill, or in a heated greenhouse. Sweet Peas are a firm favourite and Alan, our gardening guru, suggested tips guaranteed to enhance seed germination. For vegetables, the easiest seeds to germinate are Runner Beans which then produce a prolific crop. With a bit of luck and, quite literally, a fair wind we hope to have some of these on show at our Garden Festival later in the year. As always, everyone is welcome at our meetings – not just environmentalists and gardeners so, if you’d like to learn more about composting and recycling, come along to Freeland Church Hall on Thursday 14th April at 8pm.

Brighter Bridge Of Weir - could april be more like may? At the time of writing this, the astronomical spring equinox is still a week away. The meteorological definition of spring is always the first of March, and although spring’s flowers have sprung, there’s been precious little sign of spring weather. Hopefully, that will have improved by the time you’re reading this. April used to be known for its showers of course and March used to be known for its winds, but this year most of those blew in February, then March was wet. Can we hope that this year, April will be more like May? Since we’re looking ahead, our order of summer plants is at the nursery. They won’t be delivered until the end of May or early June, but the order always has to be in around three months beforehand. It can be a bit hit and miss at times, but we always try to choose plants that have performed well before and in a wide complementary range of colours too. Still, let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves - will we have a pleasant, sunny April? Maybe.

Colourful Kilmacolm The committee of Colourful Kilmacolm recently met in person for the first time since January 2020, all meetings during the Covid years having been conducted by email or zoom. We are hopeful that the situation will continue to improve and will allow us to get back to being fully involved in brightening up our village. Not that we have been idle, but it is noticeable that fewer volunteers have been turning out than was previously the case, and so we are appealing to all who are able, to come and help when asked. If you are reading this but are not already involved and you enjoy gardening and a bit of social interaction, this is your chance. Do get in touch with us. The signs of spring are all around us at the moment. The two laybys on the outskirts of the village had a lovely show of snowdrops and crocuses, and daffodils are shooting up everywhere. Even the violas in our planters have (mostly) come through the winter and are adding a little colour. Keep an eye on the displays and remember to smell the hyacinths! It is our intention to hold a ‘real’ AGM this year, on the evening of 16th May and we look forward to seeing our members there. Details will be sent out beforehand. kilmacolm wildcard Artist

After watching Sky Arts Landscape Artist of the Year for many years I was delighted to be given a chance as a wildcard artist for the 2022 series. My wildcard day was at Compton Verney in Warwickshire. I painted two A1 size boards to make sure that I could include the wide expanse of the lake. In the end this paid off as all the judges, especially Kathleen thought that I had been quite courageous to tackle such a large diptych. At the end of the day, I felt like I had run a marathon, but I was pleased with my paintings, if the judges liked them, even better, so I was gobsmacked when I was told that I was the winner! It was a moment I will always remember. A couple of days later I received a phone call saying I was the overall winner of the Wildcard section of the show and was invited to take part in the semi-finals! Wow, I couldn’t believe it. The semi-final view was the Forth Rail Bridge. Being in a pod was a very different experience. There are so many interruptions which are fun and interesting but stop one’s concentration. I kept looking at the huge view in front of me with some trepidation. We were instructed to begin by Stephen Mangan and his joke about how long it takes to paint the Forth Rail Bridge. The day passed by so quickly. I was interviewed regularly by all the judges and Stephen and Joan. They were all lovely, especially Joan Bakewell. I was disappointed to not be chosen for the finals but as I had come much further than I ever expected, I left feeling a great sense of achievement and a determination to have another go.

A quick run down of some great events and camps on locally to keep the little darlings entertained over the choc-fest of Easter!

1. Dinosaur Egg Hunt

Lochwinnoch RSPB Nature Reserve: 1st – 30th April,10am - 4pm. £3 This looks lots of fun! Take part in an egg hunt, but with one key difference, you’re looking for dino eggs. If you manage to find them all, you can claim your reward. Enjoy the bird hide and the natural playground as you hunt!

2. Guided Pond Dipping & Bug Hunting Lochwinnoch RSPB Nature Reserve: 9th April, 10.30am - 12noon. Prices from £6.50 A great way to introduce aquatic species to eager kids and those bug loving adults too! Knowledgeable volunteers guide you through the session and will open up a world of water and land insects that you never knew was there.

3. Egg-stra Special Egg Roll Whitelee Wind Farm: 17th April, 12noon – 4pm A whole day of EGG FUN! Hunt them, decorate them, and smash them to bits on the Whitelee Wind Farm Mega Roll! A truly egg-sceptional day out for all the family! Also, the wind turbines are truly awe inspiring and kids can take bikes up here an explore the trails.

4. ONEREN Easter Camps

For those struggling with childcare there are many different camps on offer from OneRen Leisure. These camps are being held at On-X, Linwood and Park Mains in Erskine. There is a huge variety of activities planned from arts and crafts, to football and other popular games. Activity sessions for youngsters with additional support needs are also taking place at the Lagoon and On-X - these sessions are led by qualified coaches.

5. Inverclyde Libraries Crafternoons

If you have little ones and the weather is a bit dodgy over the Easter break, Inverclyde Libraries usually organise free afternoon craft sessions at various locations throughout Inverclyde. At the Gateway Community Garden we have welcomed several new volunteers who have adopted a raised bed to grow their own vegetables and sowing is well underway. Thanks to a community grant from Renfrewshire Council, we are in the process of celebrating the life of local lass, Mary Barbour, by installing seating, paving and planting with an interpretation panel focused around the commemorative cairn in the village. This inspirational lady was born in New Street in 1875 and deserves our
