welcome back everyone! it's been a while .....

I am delighted to be able to bring you the Advertizer again. I certainly didn’t think that we’d be away for so long. I am overwhelmed with the huge support for the Gryffe Advertizer as we return to some kind of normal.

So many local events were cancelled and sadly, our local theatre groups and music venues are some of those worst affected by all this. They are still closed with little sign of being able to perform live for some time. It’s doubtful that the regular Panto season will take place either.

It hasn’t been without its casualties here either. When lockdown came, I had to send the staff home. Now we are on the other side, I have not been able to bring everyone back. This has been such a difficult decision to make and not one taken lightly.

However, some good things did come from all this - our wonderful community became very inventive. The Knapps Show, Kilbarchan’s Lilias Day and the Houston Agricultural Show all became virtual events with live footage online on their websites and Facebook.

You can watch and participate in events that normally involve long distance travel.

Our eyes were opened to the number of wonderful events that were streamed online.

Imagine being able to watch a concert, theatre show, opera or ballet, anywhere in the world, from your own home!

Due to the number of local online events, I was able to produce an online only issue of the magazine, working from my little desk at home. If you missed out on seeing it then you’ll find the link on our website www.advertizer.co.uk - it’s worth a read!

One thing I think we all learned from lockdown was that if we live in a village with local shops, then we should be very grateful for them. Certainly in Kilmacolm, the local businesses were what kept many people who were isolating supplied with fresh food. Even just a friendly face at the window checking up on people made all the difference to many.

It would be all too easy to return to our old ways, not giving consideration to our neighbours, our local area, our local shops and businesses, and our much cherished key workers. If you are having a ‘bad day’, please just think back to these times and consider how lucky we are to be here and living in such an amazing place.

We all know the community spirit is strong here, but the imagination, care and consideration that has been shown is amazing.

We do indeed live in a wonderful part of the world! And remember...

It’s well worth the climb up the hill from the foot of Beinn Lora for the stunning panorama of coast, islands and mountains.

Picnic tables at wonderful vantage points give you a chance to catch your breath and take in the scenery and the Eagle’s Eyrie viewpoint is an ideal photo opportunity.

Whilst Beinn Lora may only be 308 metres high, its fine position ensures that the magnificent views from its summit match those from many a Munro. The approach uses waymarked forestry walks but the section before the final pull up to the top is very wet.

Six months ago many local businesses put up signs that read “Closed until further notice”. Tradesmen were not allowed in our houses. Businesses that continued to open had to put strict social distancing measures in place allowing for far fewer footfall. Life changed almost overnight.

We became anxious shoppers. In many cases the local store, G butchers and fishmongers became a more appealing prospect YO U ONN C than mixing with lots of others in the supermarkets. At a time when face-to-face contact was minimal, the local fishmonger, butcher or store owner was still there for a socially distanced chat and a smile. Those connections were important. Those connections ARE important.

The Bridge of Weir Hillwalkers enjoyed a wonderful weekend of weather back in October 2019 when they ascended Beinn Lora, a small hill but with bags of character and one with magnificent views to Mull and the west coast and inland to mighty Ben Cruachan and the snow clad summits of Glen Etive and Glen Coe.

One of the more positive developments arising from this pandemic is that more people have discovered the fantastic produce available in their local shops. Scotland Loves Local** is a nationwide campaign set up, as we come out of lockdown, to remind people to continue to support shops and businesses in their local areas. And with the prospect of recession looming at the time of writing, quite simply if we don’t support them, we are likely to lose them.

Scotland’s food and drink industry is worth £15 million. It is the nation’s biggest manufacturing sector. Throughout the crisis, Scotland’s band of butchers has continued to work, providing customers with high quality fresh meat and importantly supporting local farmers.

New research* has revealed that over three quarters of respondents agree that it is important to continue to support local suppliers as restrictions lessen. The research also revealed that two thirds of people intend to buy more from local suppliers going forward and that a third of people have increased their consumption from local supplier since lockdown began. All of which is encouraging. People seem more concerned with traceability since lockdown began with 62% of those surveyed saying they have become more aware where their food has come from.

The move to use the local supply chain not only benefits us locally, but also globally.

Reducing food miles and buying from more sustainable producers is a shift that can reduce our carbon footprint. Despite the pandemic taking up every news channel, the climate emergency still must be addressed.

But it’s not just the statistics that matter. Local business owners provided countless stories of community togetherness and innovative and inspiring ideas during lockdown. Many restaurants quickly converted their business to enable takeaway and/or delivery services.

Butchers, fishmongers, pharmacy workers and others often went above and beyond delivering orders to shielding customers. A local Airbnb business in Bridge of Weir opened their house to NHS staff free of charge. The Advertizer printed hundreds of “Are You SelfIsolating? I Can Help.” slips for local community groups to use.

All of this goes to show that our high streets and local places of business are not just made up of bricks and mortar, they are comprised of people, relationships and compassion. To put it simply, when we needed them, they were there for us. Now, more than ever, they need us. Kilbarchan Park set for £50,000 investment

Young and old alike are set to benefit from a £50,000 investment in Kilbarchan Park as new outdoor gym equipment and upgraded play equipment was approved by councillors.

The fitness equipment will allow the park to be used for outdoor fitness classes, while new seating and picnic areas will encourage families to use the park more often.

For younger parkgoers, the zip wire is set to be renewed and play areas resurfaced, and young people will be further consulted on new equipment to be added to the park.

The investment has been secured from Renfrewshire Council’s Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas and Villages Investment Fund following an application by Kilbarchan Community Council.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to support Kilbarchan Community Council in their plans to upgrade the local park as it will make such a difference to the local community, both young and old.

“If this has inspired you, or you feel like your area has missed out, please get in touch with us and we’ll work with you to create an application for your local green space, park or play area.”

The Community Council will now advance their plans for improvement and hope to start work later this year.

Fiona Stewart, Chair of Kilbarchan Community Council, said: “After much consultation with the residents of Kilbarchan, proposals for improving Kilbarchan Park were pulled together by the Community Council and it has taken just under two years to take the proposals from the planning stage to implementation.

“Working with Renfrewshire Council on a limited budget, the play area has undergone several improvements and the necessary work to reinstate drainage in the park has also taken place.

The £1.87million fund is available to all communities who have an idea as to how they can improve a green space, park or play area in their area and anyone interested is encouraged to contact the council for an initial discussion and support.

The Villages Investment Fund has £370,000 ringfenced specifically for investment in Renfrewshire's villages and applications are welcomed that strengthen the character, identity and heritage of the local community.

Talking heads connecting Paisley & District U3A If you’re retired and want to keep your mind alert just take a peek at the Talking head film clips on Paisley & District U3A’s website.

Local U3A chair, Kathleen O’Donnell said: “Our volunteers wanted to find ways to keep their groups going during the pandemic. It was highly likely that our most vulnerable members were in social isolation or shielding and couldn’t attend face to face meetings. So several groups had a go at using digital technology to help people stay connected and keep on learning in fun ways. We’ve asked leaders to reveal the plus points and the challenges of using social platforms to keep in touch. You can also see and hear for yourself how members have adapted to this and what goes on in the different groups.

“So, if you want to enjoy a new hobby or take up a new skill, this is a golden opportunity. You can be a fly on the wall and listen in before you take part in a session. People are welcome to try one or two classes for free and can then pay an annual membership fee at the start of the new session.

We plan to offer Talking heads clips about architecture, books, conversational Spanish, gardens, meditation, and opera appreciation for starters. Regular events cancelled Renfrewshire Council is sorry to announce that as part of ongoing measures to help manage the coronavirus pandemic, the following events will not go ahead in 2020: Johnstone Fire Engine Rally; Renfrewshire Doors Open Days; The Spree festival; Paisley Halloween Festival; Paisley Fireworks Display; Paisley Christmas Lights Switch-On; Renfrew Christmas Lights Switch-On and Johnstone Christmas Lights Switch-On. Currently a ban on mass gatherings is in place across Scotland and when lifted it is expected that restrictions will remain in place for some time, including physical distancing measures and advice to avoid crowded places. The decision not to run our events programme also takes into account the lengthy planning time required to safely organise major events.

We hope everyone will understand that we must put public health first. We are continuing to plan our major events programme in Renfrewshire for next year, working closely with national bodies and following public health advice.

Reaching out to support the Foodbank The Houston & Killellan Kirk’s initiative in collecting food and toiletries for the Renfrewshire Foodbank has been truly embraced by the whole Houston Community during Lockdown. Donations every Tuesday average 60-70 shopping bags. A few weeks in and the Foodbank were reporting on Facebook “this week it was half a ton of food delivered – WOW!” In the first 14 weeks of receiving donations at the West Halls, Houston on Tuesdays, the Foodbank advised that 4.5 tons providing 11,000 meals had been delivered.

Now, after 21 weeks, around 16,000 meals have probably been provided for, as well as many bags of toiletries, made up of contributions from individuals, groups and businesses including:

Gryffe Valley Rotary continues to meet weekly on Wednesday using ZOOM. Once a fortnight we have a speaker and in between we have an informal Chat meeting.

So, what was very well supported by those attending the Kirk on Sunday mornings before Lockdown has grown into an initiative enthusiastically supported by the wider Houston Community at the West Halls every Tuesday during these difficult times. In the current climate, those depending on the Foodbank, will have even greater needs than before. So it will be terrific if those in the Houston Community can continue to support, not only in donating, but also in spreading the word to the wider community.

Rotaract clubs bring together people aged 18-30+ to exchange ideas with leaders in the community, develop leadership and professional skills and have fun through enterprising activities. There are already Rotaract Clubs in Glasgow and Renfrew and the speaker Mariela Gaitan will undoubtedly encourage Gryffe Valley to consider setting up one here.

SCOTLAND LOVES LOCAL IS LOOKING FOR NOMINATIONS FOR THEIR HIGH STREET HEROES AWARDS. Members of the public can nominate a local person, business or organisation which they feel has made a difference – from helping vulnerable neighbours to keeping town centres welcoming and safe as restrictions have eased.

The awards are being organised as part of the Scotland Loves Local campaign, which encourages shoppers across the country to think local first and back businesses in their own town centre or high street before travelling further afield or turning to online retail giants.

Nominations for the High Street Heroes Awards can be made at https://lovelocal.scot/high-street-heroes/. There, you can briefly share the details of the person, local business or organisation you would like to see rewarded and why.

Nominations will close at 5pm on Friday, September 11th.

Walk of Hope for SHA Erskine Town Centre.

Walk of Hope for Scottish Huntington’s Association This is a difficult time for fundraising but Charities still need our help. As in previous years, Margaret Moncrieff will do a sponsored Walk of Hope along the banks of the Clyde in Erskine to raise funds for Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA). This will take place this year on Saturday 12th September. The walk is at the most 5 miles. In order to maintain social distancing, she will be accompanied by just a few friends.

HD is a devastating neurological condition which renders the sufferer increasingly dependent on care over the course of 15 to 25 years. In layman’s terms it is like having motor neuron disease, Parkinson’s and elements of Alzheimer’s – all at the same time. Sadly, it is genetic and every child of a person with the condition has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease. There are now real hopes of a treatment but it will be many years before these drugs are available. In the meantime, families and children who are affected by HD will continue to need the support of SHA. SHA is the only Scottish charity dedicated to helping people affected by Huntington’s disease (HD).

There are lots of local charities that need your help, particularly at this difficult time for everyone. If you think you can do your bit, please choose your favourite charity, and go VIRTUAL to raise funds in September.

I am a photographer with my Studio in the same building as the Advertizer offices. As of the end of March like many other people my job became impossible to do – I mainly shoot nurseries and schools and family groups in the studio.

All gone -overnight. What to do?

I still had all my cameras, and fortunately myself and my family all remained healthy throughout lockdown. I was fit and I loved walking so that was what I did. I just made sure I took my camera with me often. I walked round Kilbarchan, Bridge of Weir, Johnstone, Brookfield etc and photographed what I saw. Newborn lambs, bees, butterflies, flowers, trees, interesting skies and even some stars.

I spent several cold dark hours trying to catch the Starlink Satellite chains to no avail.

When the weather would not play nice, I set up a mini studio in my attic office and photographed water droplets, dandelion heads, whatever I could find.

I organised an Alphabet Challenge for a local ZOOM group where kids were encouraged to try to find and photograph letters of the alphabet in their houses, gardens, surrounding area and post them on a Facebook page. A few weeks later we organised a “What am I” Challenge – you had to photograph part of a common item or close up at an odd angle and people had to guess what the items were.

As the local Lilias Day was cancelled in its usual format they held a Virtual Lilias Day and the villagers still decorated their houses and I spent a few hours recording the results to post on Facebook.

I nipped down to the airport to record the planes parked in lines at the end of the runway – very visual reminder of the situation.

When restrictions started to lift a little I was in a difficult situation. I couldn’t open the Studio but I needed to work. I offered outdoor, socially distanced photo shoots in peoples gardens or local parks. I also did graduation shoots for adults and kids who missed their end of nursery events.

These proved very popular and kept my business ticking over.

The Studio is now open but only for passports, headshots and individual portraiture. Hopefully by September we will be fully open, but in the meantime I am still doing outdoor shoots.

Communities set to decide on local biodiversity areas Comments Deadline: Sunday 13th September 2020

PXLS Paisley Logo Design Competition!

Deadline extended! 30th September!

Paisley Community Trust are launching a new competition to design the Logo and Brand for their proposed Community Cinema to be called ‘PXLS’.

The story behind the name is vital. We had to develop a multigenerational brand to appeal to both young and old. The ‘PX’ represents the location – Paisley Cross Paisley X PX. Whilst this appeals to a younger generation, it has no link to Paisley’s proud cinema past. The ‘LS’ represents “La Scala”, a cinema from Paisley’s past which stood at the site of the proposed new cinema. This has huge appeal to the older members of our community.

We are looking for a new logo and brand including colours and typeface to match our amazing new name and bold community cinema plans!

The Competition is open NOW and we can’t wait to see what you come up with! Good Luck!

Local people will be asked whether nature should be encouraged in parks, road verges, roundabouts and within their neighbourhoods, as part of a drive to encourage residents to shape the communities they live in.

The Council has already identified potential areas for biodiversity in Renfrewshire, with a maximum of ten chosen in each community, and residents will be asked to decide whether they believe they are suitable.

Detailed assessments have been carried out on each proposed area to identify the current biodiversity and the potential for animals, plants and natural flowers to flourish.

Community members can see the proposals and the assessments online and are encouraged to submit their views on the proposed sites, and any other areas in Renfrewshire that they believe would benefit from biodiversity, before the consultation closes on Sunday 13 September.

Those without internet access can call 0300 300 0330 to for support to submit their views.

The proposals are designed to improve the local environment as part of ongoing plans to tackle climate change in Renfrewshire, with the council taking the lead in putting it at the forefront of all decision making for the future.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “As we continue to look for every opportunity to tackle climate change, the creation of biodiversity areas across Renfrewshire would help improve the local environment and allow nature to flourish in our communities.

“We want to know where you think biodiversity would flourish and help us improve our local environment, whether that’s in your local park, a grassed area near your home or a road verge in your area.

“This isn’t about not cutting grass and leaving it to grow wild though. We’ve cut more than 97% of Renfrewshire grassed areas in recent months so the areas we have proposed have been specifically identified for this purpose.

“Each area would be maintained and added to if required to ensure that natural plants and insects can develop, and their progress would be monitored continually.

“This consultation gives local people the chance to have an informed look into biodiversity, as well as each proposed area and its potential benefits, before making their decision, so I would encourage everyone to take part before the deadline.”

local news BRIDGE OF WEIR Cllr Natalie Don It is great to be writing my column again and it is nice that things are now returning to what we deem as a sense of normality.

One of the things I will never forget from lockdown was the level of community spirit I saw in each of the areas I represent.

We saw Facebook groups pop up to help residents who were shielding or vulnerable, we saw communities coming together to make fun activities whether that was hunting for stones or creating stone snakes together, people making and sharing face coverings and all in all, just looking out for one another. In the small villages, I believe our communities are already close but this has undoubtedly brought people closer and I truly hope that we don’t lose sight of this as time passes by.

I also want to take this opportunity to thank all the key workers and everyone who helped to keep our country going during those months of lockdown.

NHS staff, carers, supermarket workers, key businesses, emergency services, there are too many to name, we owe you a great debt.

One of the main things I have been working on in recent months is cycle links between our villages. Enabling and promoting active travel has always been a priority of mine but this became even more relevant during and since lockdown. In the past few months we have seen more people than ever out exercising and with social distancing measures in place in public transport, more people choosing to walk or cycle. In Bishopton, my focus has been on a link along Greenock Road between the village and the Red Smiddy roundabout. Following a site visit I carried out last year at the request of a Bishopton resident, I was pleased to confirm recently that a shared cycle and walkway would be created for this link.

In Bridge of Weir, a focus has been safe passage for children walking to and from Gryffe High School on Houston Road. I asked that consideration was made for a cycle route on this road and an application has been made to the Scottish Government’s Spaces for People fund for temporary infrastructure along this route to help with social distancing.

Finally in Langbank, I am currently making enquiries in relation to a cycle link along part of the A8 between Bishopton and Langbank.

It is so good to see the strength of communities and people coming together over the last few months and that must continue as we loosen the restrictions on day to day life.

Hopefully those that deserve recognition for helping others through the lockdown will receive it in some form or other.

I am pleased to be back after an extended 4 month visit to Australia. Video conferencing has been my new norm, working practice will be different now for many. Many popular and long running village events have had to be cancelled. Unfortunately this applies to the bonfire and fireworks. Health and insurance advice has been taken and until there is a vaccine it would be irresponsible to have several thousand villagers closely packed even in a field.

Could all the invaluable team please stand down, hopefully for just one year.

While the council has managed to continue with refuse and recycling collection through the lockdown, it is now becoming extremely frustrating to me and some local residents who find that their bins are continually missed. Council was supposed to have introduced a digital system in the lorry cabs last Christmas that was going to resolve such problems but it is now becoming scandalous just how often the same bins get missed.

For the majority of us, collection of the bin rubbish was not an issue but the closure of the amenity sites has seen a lot more litter and fly tipping in the countryside. I would like to thank each and every one of you who has joined me in picking up litter and continue to do so. I still have a number of litter pickers that I am giving away to people who would like to assist with this, and I can also provide the necessary green bags, should you wish to leave them for collection at the side of the road.

It’s been a long wait but slowly the council is getting the grass cut.

Thanks must be expressed to those of you, like myself, who got hold of strimmers and lawn mowers and went out and cut the communal areas around their neighbourhood. It was wonderful to see this local spirit in the circumstances. Alas, the council is planning on leaving some areas to grow wild. They have tried this before and the areas just became a mess.

I will be doing my best to ensure that if wild flowers are to flourish that the necessary maintenance takes place.

The lockdown has meant that construction work in the Dargavel area has set things back for the new primary and nursery schools. If this concerns you then please drop me a line and I can update you on when this work should be complete. Refurbishment of the Bishopton PS has also been a casualty and the work is now carried forward to 2021-22.

On the issue of roads, speeding in the villages has been a big problem. The Chief Inspector Jim Cast of Police Scotland is now on the case so beware. It is worrying to see the number of blocked gullies across the council. Hardly surprising that we have flooding issues when it rains. With the council only owning one gully slurper, the problem isn’t going away soon.

There has been much planning activity. The Court of Session has supported an appeal by Gladman with regard to the reporters handling of the Carsemeadow development.

A new reporter has been appointed by the Scottish Government. The Council will again oppose.

The appeal by Gladman regarding our decision to refuse North Dennistoun has been refused. And we hear of no further appeal to the Court of Session. St Columba’s Church hall has been assessed under Covid 19 regulations, to determine its suitability for the public hearing on the Plannetreeyetts housing application.

The appeal to the Court of Session by Mactaggart and Mickel and others, against the reporters handling of our Local Development Plan was successful in the Housing section.

The salmon ladder on the Gryffe is doing its job of making available some 10km of spawning tributaries. The ospreys have fledged one youngster but there is much concern regarding the effect of eight 100 metre turbines of the Greenock Windfarm currently being constructed. Another example of local democracy being overturned on appeal by the Scottish Government.

McGills Buses have changed the terminus of the 530 from the Retail Park to Port Glasgow bus station. Bus occupancy is 80% down due to Covid 19 and bus services throughout the West of Scotland have been curtailed. I have appealed the 530 decision.

Speeding is a problem in the village, not just on the main routes, but on what should be quiet residential roads. It is the role of the Police to enforce speed limits but they are proving to be unsatisfactory in conducting this duty. I have asked for a detailed study and report from roads officers.

Cllr Andy Doig I am delighted that following extensive lobbying of Renfrewshire Council I have persuaded them to issue a new traffic order changing the speed limits on the Beith Road into Howwood from 60mph to 40mph. The victory comes on the back of complaints both in the village and in the Spateston and Corseford areas of Johnstone. This should reduce the flow of traffic between both communities, and the reduction has been welcomed by Howwood Community Council.

Another positive change is that Sustrans has given Renfrewshire Council funding to introduce temporary cycle lane, one of which is the Beith Rd to Howwood route. Cycling has become so popular, both for leisure and commuting during the Lockdown, that I am hoping that if uptake is high then council officers may make this cycle lane a permanent feature. Cycling is both good for our health and for the environment and hopefully will see a resurgence in decades to come.

As we move slowly out of the Lockdown situation from phase to phase I am pushing Renfrewshire Council to re-focus its attention to flooding and drainage issues, particularly as the pattern of humid wet summers will be with us for the foreseeable future. I am especially concerned about areas such as Low Barholm in Kilbarchan and Lochlip Road in Lochwinnoch. To be fair the Council has increased funding for drainage in recent years but the Covid 19 crisis has wrecked havoc with the Council’s agreed Budget decided last March. If the administration put forward a revised Budget I am determined that my constituents will not suffer for decisions taken in both Holyrood and Westminster.

Since March we have been enjoying twice weekly Zoom meetings with a variety of topics covered-mostly light-hearted. We are having our first speaker meeting shortly. We have also kept the “little grey cells” going with quizzes set by our members. We keep in touch daily by Whatsapp - whatever would we have done without modern technology. The National Organiser has arranged a wide selection of speakers, also on Zoom and some quizzes - we in Kilbarchan won the first one out of 120 people and were equal second in the next, so keeping Kilbarchan NWR well and truly on the map. The annual AGM and conference weekend will now take place virtually over 11 days with a series of speakers and a final evening quiz. Our meetings will continue on Zoom for the foreseeable future until we are allowed to meet once more in our homes. If you would like more info about our group please contact Fiona on 01505 348627 .

Who could have predicted how our lives were to change over the last few months. It would be remiss of me not to say a huge thank you to key workers, who have worked throughout the pandemic to keep us all safe and well. We should never forget what they have done for us.

As readers will know during lockdown council buildings have remained closed, but are now beginning to reopen. Despite the major impact of Covid 19 many of the issues that I have been working on over the summer are familiar.

Problems with speeding in Kilbarchan and Howwood, inconsiderate parking, fly tipping and the backlog in grass and hedge cutting have been prominent. Work such as external house repairs and refurbishments have also been on hold, and it is important that this recommences before the winter.

On a wider note the financial implications of the pandemic are becoming increasingly clear, and the council may well have to reorder its priorities with possibly an Autumn budget. I will keep readers informed of developments on this front and will work to ensure the impact on the communities of Kilbarchan, Howwood, and Lochwinnoch is minimal.

Council Boards and meetings which have been suspended since March have now resumed by video link, and while this is not the same as public face to face meetings, they do provide some opportunity for scrutiny and collective decision making.

Kilbarchan Parish Church We have not been able to meet as a church since 15th March but each Sunday, we can enjoy a Reflection led by Stephen and Dorothy, with music by Myra and George, bible readings by a series of volunteers and piano music by Ian and Rosie - all put together

We have now registered as an Eco-Congregation and a small committee is working to check how we can improve our use of resources and manage waste effectively. Hopefully, we shall be able to worship as a church family before too long, but this is not easy when there can be a limited number, no singing and no coffee after the service.

Brookfield Brookfield News In keeping with other areas across the country, life in the village has been quite different over the last few months, especially during the period of lockdown. No regular classes or groups have met in the Village Hall since mid-March although several managed to take place online via Zoom. The restrictions also put paid to the start of the usual Tennis and Bowling Club season. The annual Art Club show and Village Council AGM were also casualties. However, work which had already been planned for refurbishment of the Hall floor still managed to go ahead in April and other maintenance jobs have also been carried out.

Brookfield Wedding Another event which could not take place as a result of Covid 19 was the proposed wedding in June of Melissa Meighan (Woodside Lane) and Gareth Williams. However, the couple decided to go ahead anyway and tied the knot at a scaled down event in the garden on Friday 31st July. After a warm and sunny start to the day, the subsequent thunderstorms did not dampen spirits! Best wishes go to the happy couple for their future!

In collaboration with Barnhill Farm, we were delighted to be able to offer residents a no-contact drive through collection scheme for pre-packed boxes of fruit, veg and other essentials in the Hall car park. Many folk from the surrounding area also took advantage of this service and we know from the feedback received how much this was appreciated at such a difficult time. This was operated by a number of volunteers in the village and we extend our thanks to them for all their efforts. Thanks must also go to the team of volunteers who regularly undertook the cutting of the grass and weeding the flowerbeds in the Millennium Garden. We also provided the opportunity for people to donate items to Renfrewshire Foodbank resulting in total donations of 571.43kg.

HOUSTON Cllr Audrey Doig I would echo the comments of other council colleagues from Bridge of Weir that the new cycle path, between Houston and Bridge of Weir, which Houston Community Council and Sustrans have been working on, will undoubtedly provide a green and health dividend for all members of the two communities as well as school pupils at Gryffe High. And as the mother of a former Gryffe High Head Boy, I know that the staff will be as likely to welcome this new cycle path as much as the pupils as this would allow more staff to cycle to Gryffe High too.

I was first contacted by parents who were constituents of mine in the Houston area, who have all been cycling as families during the lockdown, who wanted a new cycle path to allow their children to continue to cycle safely to Gryffe High and beyond to Bridge of Weir. I gave this idea 100% support and I would like to congratulate Houston Community Council for their successful campaign to get this cycle path introduced.

Although it is only six months since my last Advertizer column it seems like light years ago due to the massive challenges we have all had to face due to the Covid 19 crisis. I would like to commend Renfrewshire Council for focussing on key matters such as delivering food parcels, every week, to those shielding, and continuing to keep our bin service in place. Things are slowly getting back to normal and one of the challenges we face are the differing views that exist on grass-cutting and re-wilding. Many would like to see grass cutting maintained as it traditionally was by the Council, whilst many would like to see the re-wilding of certain areas to benefit the environment and local wildlife.

This is a key debate and I would urge constituents to make their views on this known on the Houston Community Webpage to help Councillors assess the mind of the village on this.

Local Outreach Plans Throughout Lockdown, the congregation of Houston & Killellan Kirk & the wider Houston Community have been enthusiastically supporting the Renfrewshire Foodbank and we plan to add to this by accepting clothes donations too.

It has become traditional to have a Warm Clothes Collection in November for the homeless, or perhaps no longer homeless, but in need of some warmth in the winter months.

Generally the NEW clothes donated are passed to organisations such as the Simon Community for the vulnerable they support.

The Simon Community, who are short-listed in this year’s Scottish Charity Awards, has been working since 1963 to alleviate the isolation of people sleeping rough, by providing a space where they can gain a sense of belonging and foster the skills they need to move towards independent living.

The plan is to accept donations without social contact at the West Halls, Houston (Rear Fire Exit door facing the Manse), when open for the Foodbank on Tuesdays during the month of November i.e. 3rd, 10th, 17th & 24th November – between 10am & 12noon & between 7pm & 8pm.

Another tradition has been to have a Christmas Gift Service early in December to accept donations for vulnerable children. This year the plan is to accept these also at the West Halls, again when they are open for the Foodbank but on the first two Tuesdays of December i.e. 1st & 8th December. Lochwinnoch Community Council

Lochwinnoch International Aid As the lockdown has continued we’ve been unable to resume any of our planned fundraising events. However, one of our members had the bright idea of offering up plants in return for donations. This raised £150. A repeat is planned so if you are walking down Calder Street towards Bridgend, look out for plants on offer on the left just before you get to the bridge.

The pandemic has highlighted that we live in an interconnected world and global responses are often needed to address the issues that face us. The LIA raises money through donations and fundraising and periodically we meet and agree where best to give. This is sometimes to a well-known charity like Practical Action which works on projects to improve the lives of communities in a number of countries but also to smaller charities where individual members have established a connection.

One such small charity is called EMFERD to which we recently donated £550. The charity was founded in Tanzania by Josephine Bahkita following the death in 2003 of her disabled son. The Erick Memorial Fund for the Education and Rehabilitation of Disabled lives up to its name, supporting children with disabilities as well as supporting their families with advice on practical things such as food and medication. She runs a day centre and workshops for parents and teachers and also helps secondary girls from poor families access education.

The money we sent helped to purchase Maize during a period of food shortages caused by drought. Funds were also allocated towards running costs and medical costs including liquid soaps and masks for C19 management.

The little boy in the photo with Josephine is a young Masai boy with severe cerebral palsy who would have died had she not taken him into care.

We continue to raise money from our monthly subscription scheme and are always ready to welcome new members.

The CC has been using Zoom for our monthly meetings which have been quorate but unfortunately has excluded some members who do not use Zoom. We have been posting video recordings of these meetings on our website but this is not entirely satisfactory and we will resume making written minutes. Under these circumstances we have not made any controversial decisions on behalf of village, we remain open to contact from anybody with a matter to raise. By using email and zoom we have in effect been working continuously rather than on the monthly basis.

The main issue we have been dealing with is the greenbelt change proposals for Burnfoot Road and the associated housing application

by Stewart Milne Homes. We have already strongly objected to the change of Greenbelt boundary proposed by Renfrewshire Council; that matter now is with the Scottish Government to assess. Whether or not the Greenbelt boundary changes the housing application may still be pursued by SMH. Our planning group has prepared a full and thorough report detailing the objections to the housing application of ourselves and of the many village objectors, including the Burnfoot Action Group. When finalised, the report will be published on our website. The next stage is to lobby Renfrewshire councillors, with the support of the village, with the aim of getting this housing application firmly rejected.

We have been pleased to be able to help the local groups set up to respond to the C19 Crisis. We congratulate all those who responded to this situation is such energy and skill, these activities are a great credit to the village stop we have agreed to support a new application or a community project based in the primary school. You can read more about this on the various Facebook pages.

Other activities include trying to get a proper crossing of the main road at the Roadhead roundabout; getting something done about the very narrow footpath from the railway bridge to roadhead roundabout, signage along the cycle path emphasising that it is a shared path and all users should be mindful of the need to act responsibly and carefully, including but not exclusively the high-speed cyclists.

The next monthly meeting of the CC will be on Tuesday 6th of October which will be an AGM. It is most likely that these meetings will not be normal open public meetings, but Zoom meetings. At the AGM there will be a full published report, our activities in the past year (the new CC was only established February); and the office bearers Chairperson, Secretary and Treasurer will be up for election. Due to a recent resignation from the CC and the 3 existing vacancies there is the opportunity for anyone with an active interest in community matters to apply for co-option to the CC, especially anyone who can contribute under the current circumstances of digital working. We would especially like help to develop our public communications abilities.

Community organisations receive more than £47,000 Five groups will share more than £47,000 following successful applications to Renfrewshire Council’s Community Empowerment Fund.

£8,500 for local charity Finding Your Feet to carry out a feasibility study into the creation of a charity hub which would give the charity a permanent home in Renfrewshire; £9,450 for Erskine Music and Media to investigate the development of an activity hub within Erskine Sports Centre; £9,650 to Spateston Tenants and Residents Association to develop a business plan in partnership with Klas Care for a community hub at the former Spateston Nursery; £9,625 for national disability organisation Values into Action Scotland to create a business case for a new HQ at the old nursery site on Mill Street in Linwood. £10,000 to Friends of Howwood Park to carry out surveys and feasibility work on the pavilion in Howwood Park following a number of upgrades to park already.

Council officers will continue to work with each organisation to assist in the development of their plans moving forward.

Corinne Hutton, Founder of Finding Your Feet, said: ““The feasibility study is the first step towards a project we believe could be truly ground-breaking for the third sector in the area.

“Our goal is to have a charity hub where Finding Your Feet and the amputees we support can gather, as well as providing space to other local charities who are committed to helping the community.

“We’re here for the local community, and to know the local community is here for us too is a great motivation.”

The £1.5million fund supports community asset transfers by providing up-front investment in the condition of assets prior to transfer, while putting the community at the heart of the design, delivery and sustainability of the projects.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: “It’s great to see so many local organisations applying successfully to the Community Empowerment Fund and looking to take control of buildings in the local area.

“We want to empower our communities wherever we can, and this fund gives groups the financial support they need to create business plans - with the aim of taking over and then managing an asset.

“I’d encourage anyone who has an idea to get in touch with us and we’ll support them to create an application.”

Cooking with Corbin During lockdown Corbin Harris, age 10, took part in regular cooking videos, even setting up his own YouTube channel and having Jamie Oliver comment on his posts.

Fdf Scotland lockdown lunch challenged kids to get cooking, using locally sourced ingredients and devise their own recipes.

Corbin created delicious lamb Koftas, homemade flatbreads and a red cabbage salad. Over 200 entries were submitted.

Like Minds and Come Zoom with Me All of us have mental health that we all need to take care of whether we have a mental health illness or not. The current pandemic has highlighted the need for this more than ever. Yet there is still a stigma that stops many of us talking openly about our mental health. Many people are often desperate to speak to others about what they are going through but are unsure what they might think.

When we do begin to talk about our own mental health journey, we soon realise that many of those we meet every day are experiencing or have experienced similar things. Many of us feel relieved when we realise that we are not the only one that has been struggling!

Towards the end of 2019, two brave women from the Houston community decided to tackle that stigma head on and start sharing their own stories. They set up a local peer support group called “Like Minds” where people could come and freely talk about and share their mental health stories with others who have had similar experiences.

In early 2020 Houston and Killellan Kirk drew alongside and partnered with “Like Minds”, which, prior to the coronavirus (Covid19) pandemic was meeting fortnightly in the Killellan Halls. The group now find other ways to keep in touch either via zoom or go for a socially distanced cuppa or walk.

Like Minds does not offer professional mental health advice or counselling and is not there to “fix” a problem or situation. It is not intended to replace any medical or professional help that you might need. It is instead a space to bring people together, where new friends can be made as we share experiences and have conversations with others who may have similar experiences. It is a place to realise that we are not alone.

Old Ranfurly Golf Club News Friday 24th July saw the golf club’s ladies section enjoying the annual lady captain’s outing with a difference. This year’s lady captain Suzanne Smith was determined the ladies section didn’t miss out entirely on their annual fun day. Due to the Coronavirus restrictions the usual away day had to take place at our own club.

This did not deter the ladies from having a great day and all within the current safety restrictions. It was an excellent turn out and the sun shone for us. We formed 11 teams of 4 to play an 18 hole Stableford Competition. The team winners were Sandra Bell, Maureen Mitchell, Fay Storey and Charmaine Morton. The overall winner was Margo Maxwell scoring 40 points. This years lady captain Suzanne Smith thanked all the ladies who came along and was delighted by the large turn out. It really was an away day with a difference!!

Although golf in Scotland has only commenced since 28th May the ladies section is well into their competitions and club championships.

After a game members can now enjoy meals and refreshments in the club house. During the lockdown the club house has under gone a major refurbishment and is now open to members who need to book in advance to ensure numbers in the club house are within the guidelines.

At all times members are advised to follow all the health and safety rules. Hand sanitizers are available and it’s table service only. Although recent times have been challenging for all it is hoped that we are looking forward to safely enjoying the rest of our golf season.

Leo’s Dynamite!

Dynamite gymnastics takes competing to a whole new level. Aware of the impending lockdown, the Club were quick off the mark to seek out other avenues for gymnasts missing out on the British championships.

Up against time, routines were recorded and passed on to be judged, creating a first ever virtual competition. Leo Harris Downes submitted routines and anxiously waited the results. Over 300 gymnasts across the U.K took part.

The results were in. 1st place in DMT and 6th in Trampolining. A bonus overall was coming 3rd as the highest scoring gymnast. Leo said, “The time has been hard with no training for months. I can’t wait to get back to training and focus on the next championships.”

Howwood Primary School Basketball & Netball teams Our pupils excelled in basketball and netball, winning the NBA West of Scotland final in basketball and Johnstone and Linwood tournament in netball.

Unfortunately, the Scottish finals for basketball and Renfrewshire finals for netball were cancelled due to Covid-19.

This was extremely disappointing for our young people who had shown such dedication and skill in getting to such a prestigious position, especially for a small village school. However, their determination and passion for success has been fostered at Howwood and I’m sure many of them will go on to succeed through sports in high school and beyond.

Football The football team continued to have success at their tournaments, and we are very proud of one our pupils who was accepted to both the SFA school and St Ninian’s football academy, a very skilled young man!

Derek Reaches Finals of National Awards

Competitions are back too with Club Captain, Andy Farmer, sinking a 25-foot putt on the 36th hole to win the Redcliffe Rosebowl. 29 players also took part in the inaugural Seniors Championship qualifier playing for the Iain Nicholson Trophy. Sara Bishop captained Norah Adams and Shelagh Palmer to a stunning victory with a net 59 in the recent Tri-Am and junior member Lucie Barclay played her first ladies competition scoring a fantastic 19 points in the 9-hole stableford and qualifying for the Ladies Bronze Championships.

Strathgryffe Tennis, Squash & Fitness Club had reason for cheer as head tennis coach Derek Brown was a finalist at the recent Lawn Tennis Association Coach of the Year awards 2020. Derek, awarded Tennis Scotland’s Coach of the Year award for 2020 was pitted against other regional winners in England and Wales.

The juniors were on form during the recent summer coaching sessions with 78 taking part over the two weeks, practising their driving, chipping and bunker shots. It was fantastic to see so many young up and coming players enjoying our game.

Our new pro, Stuart Roberts, has also been helping others to make improvements to their game, through his club fitting service and coaching sessions. Houston United FC Training for the GIRLS teams has resumed and new girls interested in football and keeping fit are welcome. We currently have teams at Under 13, Under 11 and Under 9. Due to the coach player ratios we are also keen to recruit Coaches.

Following the relaxation of government guidelines on Covid and the club completing the necessary risk assessments, we have resumed training at Ardgryffe Park. Parents receive a “Return to Training” document based in our site Risk Assessment. We also have a one way system, temperature checking as well as track and trace processes. St Columba's School This August, we were delighted to welcome back to school our cherished staff and pupils for the start of a very different academic session.

Words like ‘community’ and ‘family’ are used by many independent schools, but at St Columba’s, most of our pupils have been part of the school since their infancy. Those who join us later are warmly welcomed and given the individual support they need in order to settle in with ease. Every Columban is known not just by name, but by their interests, their strengths and their hopes. During lockdown, we stayed true to this ethos, ensuring that pupils were offered the same care and attention we are proud to offer at any other time.

St Columba’s inspirational standard of education, which puts pupils’ wellbeing and future aspirations at the centre of all staff do, was maintained during lockdown by our highly successful ‘Virtual School’. Using state-of-the-art technology, staff were able to continue to tailor the curriculum and learning journey to suit each child’s individual needs, to help pupils develop their unique talents and to ensure that each child become the very best version of themselves they can be.

Houston Primary School P7 Transition Our Primary 7 pupils, engaged in their transition programme to their chosen secondary school. They met their new teachers online and engaged in very many learning opportunities. They also had the opportunity to come back to Houston Primary at the end of June for a final farewell. Due to COVID-19 safety guidelines, we were unable to have our ‘normal’ end of term valedictory, so we had a virtual one instead, so our pupils and families didn’t miss out on the final celebration. Awards were delivered to pupil’s doors, our choir individually recorded their chosen song, ‘Dignity’, Rev. Noonan and Mrs Murray recorded a special message and the teachers created memorable videos of our pupils time at Houston Primary School.

Something very special to keep forever.

Sumdog Challenge We have a long standing history of success in the Renfrewshire Sumdog Challenge and this time was no different, with Aidan Smith gaining second place and Macy James gaining 4th place in Renfrewshire. This is an amazing achievement. Well done! Our Primary 7 pupils gained an overall 4th place in Renfrewshire.

Dunelm Prize A former pupil, nominated our school to be entered into Dunelm’s Lucky Prize Draw and we won an amazing box of outdoor toys.

Cheryl Logan from our Parent Council collected the prize and brought it to school with the special help of her son, Primary 6 pupil Ben. He even put on his uniform for the photograph!

The pupils who were attending Houston Primary School Hub, were delighted to receive the toys and enjoyed playing with them.

Excellent news for Gryffe...

Gryffe High School has become the first secondary school in Scotland to receive an ‘excellent’ grade under the government’s short model inspection format.

A team from Education Scotland visited the Houston school earlier this year to speak to staff, pupils and parents – and have just issued a glowing report over the standard of the work they found.

The school was rated as ‘very good’ for learning, teaching and assessment, and as ‘excellent’ for ‘raising attainment and achievement’ – the highest grade on the six-point scale.

The school was extremely well represented at the Renfrewshire Inspired art competition with nine pupils having their artwork displayed in the final exhibition. The work was of an extremely high standard with P6/5 showing their artistic talents in their pencil drawings. We had a fun day out at the exhibition and a lovely lunch! (although we missed out on the chicken nuggets!)

That is the first time the top grade has been given out to a secondary school under Education Scotland’s short model inspection format, which judges schools on two quality indicators as opposed to four under the full inspection model.

Gryffe High School head teacher Colin Johnson said: “To say I am proud of our pupils and staff is a complete understatement. To be the head teacher of a school where the pupils, day in day out, impress with their enthusiasm, drive and persistence is an absolute pleasure and privilege.

Even over the very difficult last few months our pupils remained positive, thoughtful and supportive of one another and I have been amazed at the lengths they have gone to in supporting others. That has included delivering packs and resources to other pupils houses, and taking additional packs to the local church as a collection point for other pupils.

Our pupils efforts and achievements are outstanding, supported by dedicated staff, supportive parents/carers and close links with a wide range of external partners.”

We also had some success in local MP design competitions where Grace was the lucky winner in the Mairi Black Christmas card competition.

During this year the pupils have been focusing on their Kindness value and the Spring term brought further opportunities for charity events with P3 taking on the mammoth task of providing smoothies every morning break for a week. P4 also offered some tattooing for a price and everyone was walking around school covered in tattoos for several days to support their good cause.

Overall the school has raised an amazing amount this year for charities such as Macmillan, the local foodbank, St Vincent’s and the shoe box appeal.

Now we are back at school, there will be timetabled places for pupils and school will be different for a while, but we go into this with the knowledge that our Howwood kids are all stars and will do what they need to until we can all be together again.

young people encouraged to apply for share of £150K celebrating renfrewshire fund URGENT! Deadline is 13th September 2020.

Young people are set to create, design and deliver projects in Renfrewshire thanks to a £150,000 fund which aims to make the area a better place to live for young people.

Applications for the Celebrating Renfrewshire Fund - by young people, for young people – opened on 24th August and aim to give young adults and teenagers a voice in their community and a chance to shape how life in Renfrewshire will be for them.

Last year, there were 43 successful projects and these included a new changing facility for St Mirren YFC to support local young people into football, a music library for Erskine Music and Media to aid tuition and support their commissions, and funding for Lamont Farm Project to continue to provide a wildlife experience in Erskine.

Also successful were Renfrewshire Carers Centre as they continue to support local young carers, Braehead Junior Ice Hockey Club to ensure young people can try and take up the sport and Linwood, Johnstone and Gryffe Community Sports Hub to ensure improve access to sport and exercise for young people in the area.

Renfrewshire Youth Voice Vice Chair, Gavin Stewart said: “This is an incredible opportunity to get involved and get funding to make a real change to your local community. If you have any ideas, please be sure to apply!”

Anyone aged 12-25 can apply to a maximum of three Local Partnerships for up to £2,000, ensuring they meet at least one of five priorities set out by local youth group Renfrewshire Youth Voice.

These include youth involvement & participation, sport & physical activity, promoting positive mental health & wellbeing, employability & youth development, and new projects in response to Covid-19.

Applicants can also be a group that works with young people aged 12-25 and this includes schools - if they can show that the project will benefit the whole community.

Support sessions provided by Renfrewshire’s Youth Services team will be available online for young people who need assistance with their application and can be accessed via the council website.

Once applications close, young people will be able to vote via the Young Scot platform for their favourite projects and these will be awarded funding as part of the participatory budgeting process.

out & about Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society What will the weather conditions be this month? Gardeners have been bamboozled by the changing weather patterns this summer but not our garden plants – they decided in mid-July it was time to head into Autumn. What would this have meant for our Flower Show, normally held at the end of last month? Many Summer plants and annuals would have been over but Grasses, Hydrangeas and Hypericums and other late Summer shrubs would have been burgeoning. Vegetables, tended carefully during Lockdown, would have been thriving and larger than normal and exhibited with pride.

We have been busy in our gardens and have had some seriously good weather early on to keep us cheerful, so it’s sad we could not display our achievements for all to enjoy. We plan to reflect on this gardening year when the new-normal starts again and we can share photos of what has been growing in our gardens and allotments, so keep taking those photos! We have also been nourishing our Chilli Peppers and will review results in our autumn programme.

Hopefully everyone has had a good crop of colourful peppers on their window ledges.

However, the month ahead is expected to be “changeable” with cooler conditions, cloudy skies and outbreaks of windy and wet weather, interspersed with brighter spells. That, reader, is the forecast provided by the Meteorological Office for our area! So, as ever, we don’t really know but be prepared to spend time in the potting shed cleaning pots and tools rather than enjoying “Seasons of mists and mellow fruitfulness...”

The Committee held a Garden Committee Meeting in mid-August where we compared growing experiences over the summer season and discussed ideas for the Winter Programme, hopefully starting soon. However, as we know, Government Guidelines will dictate the way forward for us all.

RSPB update

With many people on furlough, they have used the available time to explore their local area and in doing so, discover the wildlife around them. Many anecdotal reports describe wildlife exploiting lockdown in a variety of ways, with birds nesting in new places, wildflowers sprouting among normally mown verges or parks, and typically shy and elusive mammals wandering through urban streets.

Here too on the reserve we have seen wildlife take advantage of opportunities that arose. We have had wrens nesting in the long vegetation that has grown around the pond at the visitor centre, sedge warblers nesting extremely close to the Channel hide, wasps building bykes in sheds and several mammals, including weasels and roe deer, being seen on our CCTV close to the visitor centre.

I’m pleased to say that our trails are now fully open again as is the children’s natural play area, viewing screen and Channel hide. The main hide remains closed and we advise checking our website for updates on the shop and visitor centre.

We are currently working on creating a new pool that, if weather conditions permit, should be in place for September. This new pool is designed to attract waterbirds such as water rail and snipe, and dabbling ducks such as teal, but should also be beneficial for all sorts of wildlife from amphibians to dragonflies and damselflies. It will be located near to the Aird meadow trail, providing potentially easy viewing.

The feeders at the viewing screen also provide easy viewing of an array of smaller birds such as blue tit, goldfinch and the occasional siskin and as you wander along the path, keep an eye out for great spotted woodpecker and nuthatch.

Waterfowl are beginning their annual increase in diversity and numbers on both the Barr Loch and Aird Meadow Loch with good views of great crested grebe possible from the end of the Dubbs trail. For anyone using the Dubbs trail or Barr Loch trail, we would like to remind you that these paths can be narrow in places. If using these paths please be prepared to slow down or stop if needed to help maintain the necessary distance from others. If you meet other people, please pass quickly but courteously and try to leave as much space as possible.

Please also note that from September 1st we will be reinstating entry fees for non-members. The money we raise from entry fees is crucial in allowing us to continue with our vital conservation work at RSPB Lochwinnoch as well as keeping it a safe and enjoyable place for all.

the rocking stone

Local history Rocking Stone The Clochoderick Stone is a logan stone (or rocking stone), large stones that are so finely balanced that the application of just a small force causes them to rock. They are found throughout the world. Some are manmade megaliths, but others are natural erratics, often left by glaciers.

Logan Stones are known in Scotland sometimes as clach-bràth. They marked locations where Scottish open-air courts would take place. A clach-bràth is sometimes known as a judgment stone.

The Clochoderick Stone near Howwood and Kilbarchan in Renfrewshire used to rock and it is said that the Druids used it to judge people. The accused was made to sit on the stone and by the way it moved the Druids judged the innocence or guilt of the individual. The rock is named after the king of the Picts Rhydderch Hael (ancient Welsh for Roderick the Generous). He lived around 580 AD and was King of the country known as Alt Clut - from where we get the name for our river here Clyde - capital Dumbarton Rock.

It is also said to be the burial place of Rhydderch Hael, King of Strathclyde who was the victor at the Battle of Arderydd near Arthuret in the Borders.

His victory brought Christianity to Strathclyde.

We know that Rhydderch was a contemporary of St Finnian - the saint after whom Kilwinning Abbey was dedicated. Another name associated with that saint and the abbey is St Brigid (Bride). We also know that this area was about the most westerly reach of the the lands belonging to the Abbey - hence St Brides well.

The Witches and Warlocks of Renfrewshire Renfrewshire was late in taking up the challenge of eradicating Witches and nearly one hundred years passed before it raised its ugly head in the Shire. The year 1664 saw John Hamilton minister of Inverkip charged with taking a bribe of 50 merks from an alleged witch he was protecting. He was discharged and the poor woman in question died in prison before her trial.

For the next thirty years Inverkip had the reputation as a centre of black magic. Other towns of note were Greenock with Kilmacolm and Inchinnan a close third.

Paisley was rather slow with its involvement in witchcraft, but they made up for that in 1676 when Sir John Maxwell of Pollock died. Five witches and a warlock were accused of procuring his death using a wax image, sticking pins in it, and melting the image at a fire. Five were found guilty and garrotted then burnt on the Gallowgreen on the 20th February 1677.

The most notorious witch trials that took place in Scotland relate to the bewitching of Christian Shaw, daughter of the Laird of Bargarran, a small estate on the road between Bishopton and Erskine Ferry. Christian’s father had paid a visit to America at the time of the Salem witch trials and it is thought Christian, having overheard a conversation, took revenge on a servant claiming that the servant bewitched her. The case was reported to the Privy Council in January, 1697.

Wholesale arrests were made throughout the county of Renfrew, the victims were handed over to the pricker, stripped naked and had their body checked for places that did not bleed when punctured with a large darning needle. If found, these blood-free spots were immediately declared to be the Devil’s mark. The accused victims’ fates were sealed. A total of twenty one men and women were put on trial. Of these, three men and four women were held to be involved in the bewitching of Christian Shaw and sentenced to death by throttling and burning on Gallowgreen on 10th June, 1697. One of the commissioned judges was William Cunningham of Craigends (see April Advertizer), who was later made an honorary burgess of Paisley. When the Bargarran witches had been disposed of, Christian Shaw made a remarkable recovery and went on to be a very successful business woman.

Third Successful Year for Inverclyde Ospreys Clyde Muirshiel is celebrating the breeding success of a pair of ospreys for the third year running. This year the pair saw one chick successfully reared and fledge from their Inverclyde home.

The rare bird of prey first bred in Clyde Muirshiel in 2018, raising 2 chicks. This success was repeated in 2019 with 3 chicks fledging the nest. They are a wonderful sight if you are lucky to spot them when visiting the Regional Park.

Now fully grown, the juvenile will be learning to hunt (feeding exclusively on fish) and fuelling up for its African migration. This is an amazing six thousand miles. They will then spend the next few years of their lives maturing before returning to Scotland to breed.

It is possible that if the young is a male bird, it will return to the same area in next year.

Adult ospreys will return to their breeding grounds in April and complete any housekeeping at the nest site before laying eggs and rearing chicks throughout May, June and July. They will leave Scotland soon and migrate to the warmer climes of Central Africa.

When in Africa the birds spend approximately 90% of their time perching, spending the rest of the time hunting and eating. This sounds like a very relaxing holiday indeed!

Park staff were unable to ring this year’s brood due to lockdown restrictions. Anyone approaching the nest to ring the birds must have a schedule one licence. When a site visit was possible the chicks were too old to approach. The good weather earlier in the year also meant nesting was earlier compared to previous years.

It is also possible a second pair of ospreys were trying to nest but may have been disturbed during nest building. We ask that everyone keep their distance if they are aware or even suspect any birds are trying to nest, disturbance is an offence under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981. The Ranger Service are now looking into placing more osprey platforms over the winter in preparation for next season.

Johnstone History Society We are very pleased to let everyone know we are reopening the Museum from the Wednesday 2nd of September and as usual we will be open Friday and Saturday also from 10am till 4pm. We are of course following Government guidelines about social distancing, the wearing of masks, hand sanitising and a one way system when going round the exhibits.

Our opening Society meeting, which should have been September, can sadly not go ahead because of the restrictions on meetings of large groups, but we will decide about October meeting depending on what the guidelines are by that time. We do hope as many as are able will pay the Museum a visit .

Walking on Eggshells It's been a surreal few months, but as some things are gradually beginning to function again, we hope to be able to start work on our Heritage Garden project at Livery Walk. With luck, it will have started by the time your copy of The Advertizer is out.

That is if things go according to plan, which is a big 'if', judging by the numbers of changes we've had to make since the concept emerged about 2 years ago!

Anyway, we hope to have it completed by the time of Brighter Bridge of Weir's 10th birthday in October.

Meantime, we're looking forward to being able to enjoy what the summer's done to our planting around the village. Hope you do, too. Stay safe.

Kilbarchan Beekeepers As summer moves towards a close it's giving a final flourish to ensure the autumn bees can continue to forage for pollen and nectar. There are still flowering plants like Japanese Anemone, Asters and the often-overlooked ivy, which is an important late source of food for all sorts of insects.

Honeybees are getting ready for winter and populations are dropping as the Queen reduces the numbers of eggs she lays every day during the height of the spring and summer. The honeybee workers she is laying now, are the bees that will see the colony through autumn and winter, lasting just over 6 months, unlike their summer siblings who work themselves to death, usually around 6 weeks old. For beekeepers it is also a time to start looking forward to the quieter months. Much of the honey crop has been removed and strained carefully into jars after being extracted from the hive frames.

Due to COVID19, like so much else in our lives, curtailing of the summer diary of events because of physical distancing has meant our gatherings and visits have been cancelled, including the honey shows. However, as we go into Autumn we will still be able to enjoy our usual monthly meetings on line with a season of talks and chat shared from our homes.

Beekeepers or those looking to start this fascinating hobby can join in if they have a suitable IT device, or just by old fashioned phone (audio only). Our meetings are the first Tuesday of each month September - March. During September and October, we will be running Q&A / ask the panel type meetings as beekeepers ready bees for winter, discussing treatments, feeding and insulation.

pets Hypertension in Cats Hypertension is the medical term for high blood pressure. It is a common condition in older cats. This can be a primary condition but is more commonly secondary to other underlying disease such as chronic kidney disease or an over active thyroid.

Persistent high blood pressure causes damage to sensitive organs. Organs affected include: •

Eyes: Bleeding inside the eyes and changes in the retina including retinal detachment which can lead to vision damage or blindness. This is often irreversible.

•

Brain and nervous system: Bleeding in these areas can cause neurological signs including odd behaviour, abnormal gait, seizures and dementia.

•

Heart: Thickening of the heart muscle which can lead to congestive heart failure in some cases.

•

Kidneys: Damage to the kidneys can lead to kidney failure and can make existing kidney disease significantly worse.

Cats with hypertension can be depressed, lethargic and withdrawn at times. This is possibly due to severe headaches similar to those suffered by humans with hypertension.

The most common reason for cats with hypertension being presented to a vet is sudden loss of vision.

Early recognition and treatment of hypertension is important to minimise damage to the sensitive organs.

Diagnosis is made by checking the cat’s blood pressure using a blood pressure monitor. Blood pressure should be checked regularly in cats with predisposing conditions such as chronic kidney disease, hyperthyroidism or heart disease. It should also be checked in cats with clinical signs consistent with damage to the sensitive organs e.g. Blindness or neurological signs.

Treatment of hypertension is with lifelong medication and regular monitoring to achieve a normal blood pressure. It is also important to test for underlying diseases, usually involving blood and urine tests, and to treat any conditions found.

As early detection minimises damage ideally all senior cats should have regular blood pressure checks. In cats over 10 years of age we would recommend annual checks and in cats over 15 years a check every 6 months would be beneficial.
