this month Our cover shot this month is to promote the ‘Classics at Castle Semple’ Car show which will return to the shores of Lochwinnoch for its 9th year on Sunday 20th October, with proceeds going towards supporting St. Vincent’s Hospice. There will be lots of interesting motors to view.

There’s big funding news this month! £50,000 has been allocated to purchase new play equipment at Howwood Public Park and £75,000 for the upgrading of Kilbarchan Public Park. Also, plans are being discussed for a £7.5 million transformation of Renfrewshire’s sport facilities. This would include investment in the On-X at Linwood, expansion and upgrading to Ferguslie Sports Centre and major upgrading to the St James Playing Fields in Paisley. Castle Semple Visitor Centre is also to receive £38,000 from Renfrewshire Council to upgrade the café and car park and to finance a new oral history project.

The 30mph limit leaving Bridge of Weir for Brookfield has now been extended out to St Mary’s Church. I’ve noticed the difference already as the speed of traffic is much reduced approaching the Prieston Road junction.

And it’s great to see that the rumble strip approaching Brookfield, just at the cemetery road, has been smoothed out at long last!

I’m delighted to hear that the Bridge of Weir Gala Day will be going ahead in 2020. There is a meeting in the Cargill Hall on Tuesday 8th October at 7.30pm for anyone interested in joining the Festival Committee. There were so many people who voiced their sadness at the event not happening in 2019, so hopefully there will be a good turnout of volunteers to make the 2020 event a big success.

Carrick Nights makes a welcome comeback, starting with ‘Vocalise’ on 26th October. KDS will be presenting ‘The Wizard of Oz’ at the Kidston Hall in November - make sure you get your tickets in plenty of time! The Paisley Spree takes place in October, and Paisley’s Halloween Festival takes place on 25th & 26th October. Details inside.

An exciting new film festival is coming to Paisley this year. Organised by award-winning independent filmmaker and former Paisley Grammar pupil Gary Hewitt, the HB Film Festival is an independent film festival showcasing local, national and international films in the heart of Paisley in the West of Scotland. More details inside.

All the regular firework events are being held as follows: Saturday 2nd November - The Bishopton Scout Group Fireworks display, Barrangary Road, Bishopton, gates open 7pm, and Kilmacolm Bonfire and Fireworks at Knapps, gates open at 4.30pm, bonfire lit 6pm. And on Friday 8th November, Kilbarchan’s Fireworks Display at Kilbarchan Park from 7.30pm.

We didn’t have confirmation going to print, but hopefully the Paisley Fireworks Spectacular will take place on Saturday 3rd November. Check on the Renfrewshire website at http://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk.

Gala Day Raises ££££s for Hospice St. Vincent’s Hospice have raised more than £600 at the Johnstone Gala Day, thanks to the fantastic support of the community, Johnstone Community Council and an extremely generous donation of bikes from the KibbleWorks.

Fundraising Manager for St. Vincent’s Hospice, Carol-Anne Lamont, said: “Thank you so much to everyone who came along to or donated to our tea tent at the Johnstone Gala Day! It was a fantastic day out, and was great to meet so many kind hearted families from our local area.

“We also owe a massive thank you to KibbleWorks for their amazing donation of children’s and adult bikes, completely free of charge, which we were able to sell on the day. These made such a difference to our stall, and raised more than £300 through their sale alone, which goes directly towards our caring services!”

Mark Robertson, depute Head Teacher at KibbleWorks said: “We are delighted to work with St. Vincent Hospice to help a fantastic cause.

Supporting charities such as these allows our young people to see the positive impact of their work, and gives them an opportunity to demonstrate the skills they have learned through the Kibble Bikes programme.”

St. Vincent’s Hospice is a specialist provider of care for people and families in Renfrewshire affected by life limiting conditions. Every year, they have to generate more than £1.5 million in voluntary donations and fundraising efforts from the community.

Carol-Anne added: “We are absolutely delighted with how well our partnership with the KibbleWorks has come together for this event, not only supporting people in the local community through our care, but by giving the opportunity for families and individuals to get more active and healthy with these good as new, affordable, bikes. Thank you again to everyone for all your support, and of course to Johnstone Community Council for organising the day and inviting us to be part of it!”

Coffee Morning Aims to Help “Repay” Hospice A coffee “morning” in aid of St. Vincent’s Hospice will be taking place on Sunday 29th September in Habbies Bar and Grill in Kilbarchan as part of their Ambassador, Victoria Hamilton’s, efforts to raise £10,000 for the charity.

Victoria, who is also running the Loch Ness Marathon in October, has been working tirelessly for several months to raise this incredible sum of money in memory of her father, who was cared for by the Hospice before sadly passing away in November last year.

Victoria said: “The days and weeks leading up to Dad’s admission were dark. His illness had taken grip and spread to his brain. Every day he seemed to deteriorate further. We were close to breaking point, and simply didn’t know where else to turn.

“From the moment he was admitted to St. Vincent’s, we felt rescued. I had always naively thought a hospice was a place you went to die; but now I know that a hospice is a place you go to live. Where you need not suffer any pain. A place where emotional support is available around the clock for the family and a patient’s last breath is made as dignified and as comfortable as possible.

“For the 27 days my dad was under their care, I estimate that it would have taken approximately £10,000 of charity funding to provide his care alone.

It is my mission to repay these costs as a small gesture for my family’s gratitude for being our salvation when we needed it most.

“This coffee morning has been organised by one of my wonderful friends, Alyson Scott, who wants to do as much as she can to support this fundraising goal. She has held these events in the past and they have been incredibly successful, and when she heard that I am around £3,000 away from my target, she decided to host the event to support this amazing Hospice.”

Hundreds Take Time Out To Explore Renfrewshire’s Hidden Architectural Gems At Doors Open Days Venues all over Renfrewshire invited people of all ages to delve deeper into their history over the weekend.

At Doors Open Days – Scotland’s largest free festival that celebrates heritage and the built environment, old and new – more than 50 buildings across Renfrewshire welcomed visitors through their doors, and provided information on what goes on behind the scenes.

Activities took place across Paisley, Renfrew, Linwood, Johnstone, Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Erskine and Inchinnan.

New venues introduced across Renfrewshire this year included - Brediland Allotments, Grow in Glenburn, Fountain Gardens, PACE, Paisley Florist Society Gardening Club, Renfrewshire Witch Hunt Experience, Wellmeadow Bowling Club, Renfrew Association of Growers & Gardeners, Renfrew Police Station, Renfrew North Parish Church and Johnstone Credit Union.

The Big Conversation

A group of intrepid individuals also travelled underground on a tour of Paisley’s medieval Abbey Drain.

This year marked the 30th anniversary of Doors Open Day nationally, with more than 1,000 buildings set to open across the country.

An informal meeting on 16th October to encourage open, supportive conversations about death, dying and bereavement. Organised by St. Vincent’s Hospice, this positive event will provide a safe place to discuss these sensitive topics. Information will be available to help with practical planning for the future. The event is open to any adult in Renfrewshire, but may not be appropriate for people bereaved recently. Free refreshments.

Renfrewshire Provost Lorraine Cameron met visitors at the Council Chambers in Renfrewshire House, at Renfrew Police Station, and at Paisley’s Fountain Gardens.

Provost Cameron said: “It was great to see so many people taking part in Doors Open Days this year.

“We have a fantastic array of venues and buildings across Renfrewshire and events like this help us to appreciate and celebrate where we live. Finding out more about our past informs our future.

“A big thank you to everyone who got involved and who supported local businesses across the weekend.”

Doors Open Days is co-ordinated nationally by the Scottish Civic Trust and is part of European Heritage Days supported by Historic Environment Scotland.

The next big event in Renfrewshire will be The Spree festival.

From 11th to 19th October, acts including Glasvegas, Gruff Rhys, PP Arnold, Karine Polwart and Hayseed Dixie will play the Spiegeltent in Paisley’s County Square.

Member pioneers The Co-op is looking for Member Pioneers in communities across the country to take up part time roles of 16 hours per month and make a huge difference within their local communities.

Member Pioneers will be the catalyst for new ideas, initiatives and projects within each of our 1,500 communities. Our focus is bringing people together - talking to customers, Coop members, colleagues and the community groups we support. Member Pioneers are involved in various local causes: supporting village halls, community spaces, skills initiatives and neighbourhood watch schemes.

One of the projects we are involved with is the Belville Community Garden Trust in Greenock.

This local space, where 3 blocks of flats were demolished, now provides practical training courses designed to help people develop their skill sets and confidence and boost job opportunities for those struggling to find employment.

The trust is in the process of building and landscaping a memorial garden, planting a wide range of fruit and vegetables which will then be used in their training kitchen.

Shawl Pattern Story at Paisley & District U3A Guest speaker, Valerie Reilly will reveal the story behind the Paisley shawl at Paisley & District U3A’s next monthly meeting on Thursday 3rd October.

Her presentation includes looking at the pattern weaving on shawls supplied by the audience. Anyone semi or fully retired is welcome to this free presentation at 2pm in the Salvation Army Hall, Mill Street, Paisley, with tea/coffee served from 1.30pm.

U3A chair, Kathleen O’Donnell said: “We are excited to be learning more about the history of the Paisley shawl and how it got its name. I’m sure Valerie Reilly has uncovered lots of interesting facts to share with us. We might have our own ‘Antiques Roadshow’ if members bring along their old Paisley patterned shawls to be examined.”

Glasgow Kiltwalk Raises Thousands for Local Hospice Supporters of St. Vincent’s Hospice have raised more than £15,000 for the local charity by taking part on the Glasgow Kiltwalk.

The Hospice was represented by teams from teams from Café Nero, Laurie Ross Insurance, the Hospice Walking group, as well as several individual supporters and staff who took up the challenge. Together, they raised an incredible total of £15,666 for patient care and services at St. Vincent’s.

Fundraising manager at St. Vincent’s Hospice, Carol-Ann Lamont, said: “We are absolutely overwhelmed by the amount raised by the Kiltwalk, and owe a huge thank you to every single person who took part and donated.

“As a charity, we have to raise nearly £1.5 million every year to allow us to provide specialist care and support for those in the community who are impacted by life limiting conditions. This is only possible thanks to the time and selfless efforts of so many people, taking time out of their busy lives to do incredible things, just like this, on our behalf.

Working with Social Work, Barbados Threads, the Star Project and the Food Bank, Renfrewshire Christmas Toy Bank provides Christmas gifts for youngsters from ages 0-18 in Renfrewshire. The charity has a number of donation points set up at various businesses and leisure locations which will go live in late October/ early November.

All donations must be new. They also take cash donations to buy gift cards for teenagers and specialised toys for children with additional support needs.

New toys help ensure a safety standard and the charity works closely with trading standards at Renfrewshire Council to help assist with this.

Gift packages are given out on a referral basis and the aim is to have all gift packages out a week before Christmas so that receivers have peace of mind that the gifts are there. This also allows time for the organisations to distribute gifts.

Last year, close to 1,000 gifts were given out to children and young people in Renfrewshire.

Driving in the Dark

by Kerry Taher, New Vision Opticians Struggling when driving in the dark is one of the more common problems experienced by drivers. Glare and reflections from street lights and car headlights, especially the ultra-bright xenon bulbs, can reduce your ability to see the road markings and this (as well as being dangerous) can result in quite a significant loss of confidence.

The problem is that our eyes are designed to work in brighter conditions, so when it gets dark our pupils become larger to let more light into the eyes, making it easier for us to see. This works well until a light suddenly shines out of the darkness (eg oncoming headlights). The eyes are in “dark mode” and the enlarged pupils scatter the light, making it seem extra-bright and dazzling - this is what we call glare. Added to this, as we get older the lenses inside our eyes gradually become less clear, also scattering the light and making the glare worse. Dirt and scratches on your windscreen (or spectacles) exaggerate the glare even more.

Good advice is to keep your windscreen clean. Ensure your spectacles are in good condition, up to date (sometimes a small change can make quite a difference in the dark) and clean. Anti-glare coatings on your glasses are recommended because they allow more light into the eye and minimise reflections. Finally, try not to look directly at the lights!

The DVLA instructor checks your eyesight when you first sit your driving test and then never again! Even the self-certification renewal forms at age 70 don’t ask for a vision report. Cars are lethal weapons in the wrong hands so we must all take responsibility every time we get behind the wheel. This obviously means meeting the minimum requirements, but also a genuine self-assessment as to how safe we are as drivers.

Local libraries launch free Discover IT courses People who are dazzled by downloads and at a loss with logins are being invited to Discover IT through a range of free courses available from Inverclyde Council’s Library Service.

The courses start on Monday 16th September and run until Friday 22nd November. Leaflets are available at local libraries detailing when and where the courses are being held. They’re also available by clicking on the link on the left-hand-side of this page.

Places are allocated on a first come first served basis.

Kilmacolm – Modern Times The arrival of the railway in Kilmacolm in 1869 marked a significant turning point in the village’s history and lead to its expansion on a grand scale.

Prior to this development, the village consisted of a small collection of mainly thatched cottages located close to the parish church.

Over the next forty years, the village expanded at an unprecedented speed.

Public services such as gas, water, sewage and electricity, banking and post office services were developed to support the expanding population.

This was accompanied by an extensive house-building programme of large Victorian and Edwardian villas, which still characterise the village today. In addition, the first Parish Council School was built in the village In 1858, which was subsequently replaced with a much larger school in 1888. A Hydropathic Hotel was established in 1902.

In 1921, the Parish Council became the owners the former Buchanan Arms building at the cross, turning it into a Village Institute or Community Centre, which it continued to be until the development of the Cargill Centre in 2009-10.

A local referendum was held in the village under the Temperance (Scotland) Act 1913, which was indicative of the many social changes which took place in the 1920’s. This resulted in it becoming a dry parish where the sale of alcohol was illegal. Kilmacolm was to have no public houses from this time until the 1990’s.

The modern village retains the character of its Victorian and Edwardian boom. Kilmacolm railway station was closed in 1983, when the track was converted into a recreational cycle path.

Despite an increase in new housing in the village during the latter half of the 20th century and a corresponding increase in population particularly in the 1960’s and 70’s, Kilmacolm has remained reasonably static in size since 2000.

Houston Historical Society As many readers will realise, the village of Houston is steeped in history.

For example, evidence was found near the village centre of a Bronze Age burial site and Barochan Hill was the site of a Roman Fort (and of the Barochan Cross, until moved to Paisley Abbey in 1981).

The conservation village centre built in 1781, comprising of North Street and South Street, is a fine example of the 18th century Planned Village Movement. Some two hundred and sixty years later the village “survived” New Town proposals, with objections lead by Parish Minister, Rev Andrew Herron. This is just a small snippet of an interesting Houston history – bringing me nicely on to my topic, “Houston Historical Society”.

At one time this was flourishing, but unfortunately it would seem that the group is no longer active – while similar groups continue to meet in Paisley, Johnstone, Lochwinnoch and Inchinnan.

Paisley Abbey Drain The medieval drain Abbey Drain at Paisley was rediscovered in 1990. This stone-built drain is a tunnel-like structure with a high arched roof. After the discovery, a deep layer of compacted mud and silt was removed and numerous artefacts, including an almost intact large pottery chamber pot, buckles, coins, a knife handle, a tuning peg, pieces of slate inscribed with polyphonic music and thousands of pottery sherds were discovered.

Since 2010, members of Renfrewshire Local History Forum have participated as volunteers in the numerous GUARD Archaeology excavations at Paisley Abbey Drain.

This year ‘The Big Dig’ surpassed all expectations. Two trenches were dug on the site. In Trench 1, the intact arch covering the outlet from the drain into the river was revealed.

In Trench 2, the outer top stones covering the internal arched roof of the drain were uncovered. The most Arched outlet from the Drain into the interesting find was a number of White Cart fragments of a glass wine bottle with the seal intact. The seal, considered to be the seal of the Cochranes of Paisley, shows a coronet and a horse and dates from the late 17th century to early 18th century.

The Forum’s involvement with the Abbey Drain began in 1999 when it organised the Abbey and Drain Conference held in Paisley Town Hall. The resounding success of the conference led to the Forum’s publication of The Monastery and Abbey of Paisley, edited by John Maldon, in 2000. The book includes the lectures from the conference with additional papers. Our interest in the Outer Top Stones on Roof of the Drain continued and, in August 2009, Drain volunteers from the Forum assisted at Glasgow University in washing and sorting the pottery recovered from the Drain in 1990. Since then Forum members have volunteered over the years at all of the six excavations led by GUARD Archaeology at Paisley Abbey Drain. In the earlier digs the Victorian remains of Abbey Close, which had been built directly on top of the drain site and, at a deeper level a medieval wall beside some cobbled paving and an enigmatic circular feature. Johnstone History Society Our next meeting will be on the 8th October in the Masonic Halls Collier Street at 7.30pm. Our speaker for October is Bruce Keith and his subject will be “Bridgescapes”. This is the title of a book he has written which is a history of Scottish bridges.

A good attendance is hoped for and all will be made welcome. Our first meeting about “Alexander “Greek” Thomson“ was well attended with there being many new faces which we were very pleased to see. I think everyone enjoyed the talk and although we were late to start due to unforeseen circumstances our Chairman did a very good job of entertaining every one with a picture talk on Johnstone.

The Museum continues to open Wednesday Friday and Saturday from 10.30am till 4pm. We were open Saturday and Sunday for Doors Open Days and had quite a number of visitors, among them some children who were able to take part in our quiz and were rewarded with sweets, crisps and drinks kindly provided by “Morrisons“. Quite a few books and maps were sold on these days. We have a good selection of books, maps and other leaflets on sale any of our open days although these can also be purchased online at johnstonehistory.org and can be paid for via PayPal.

Dentaphobia

Even more worrying, it highlighted that a third haven’t had their teeth checked for at least two years.

This backs up previous research that showed that over 10 million Brits admitted to suffering from dental anxiety with the reasons given ranging from previous bad experiences and fear of pain to cost.

As one of the few practices in Renfrewshire that specialises in dental anxiety and sedation we have an excellent understanding of “dentaphobia” and how to deal with it. Former Paisley Grammar pupil brings film festival to town An exciting new film festival is coming to Paisley this year, organised by award-winning independent filmmaker and former Paisley Grammar pupil Gary Hewitt, showcasing local, national and international films in the heart of Paisley in the West of Scotland.

The event aims to bring independent film to the local community, showcasing films by Scottish, UK and international filmmakers from genres including comedy, animation and horror. In addition to a variety of film screenings, the festival will also feature live comedy from local comedian Chris Thorburn and music from Paisley singer Lisa Kowalski.

Standing up on their hind hooves they danced in the low mid-summer sun. Using this striking image as inspiration, the rituals of horse, land and sea inspire the visual poetry of Sea Hames, its choreography responding to the power and permanence of Scotland’s natural heritage and folkloric identity.

Sea Hames is a celebration of Orkney’s Festival of the House, ancient traditions of ploughing contests and arcane rural ritual. This innovative multi-disciplinary performance fuses eclectic sonic composition, compelling performance and intricate costume to explore the mythology and iconography of the equine traditions of Scotland. Nominated for a Critics Award For Theatre In Scotland 2018: Best Music and Sound.

Plans are being made for Gryffe Valley Rotary to run several competitions for young people, including Young Chef, Youth Speaks, Young Writer, and the Primary School Quiz.

Olive Tree Scotland Friday October 18th, Freeland Church, 7pm for 7.30pm Talk by Philippa aoneua recently returned from Palestine and Israel Olive Tree is a small voluntary group based in the West of Scotland. We are not-for-profit, non-sectarian and non-political. We aim to promote a wider understanding of the situation in the Holy land today including Israel - Palestine issues by buying, selling and telling. The Palestinian crafts we buy help to provide employment and we donate any profit from our sales to alleviate the deprivation suffered by many especially women and children in the current situation.

Philippa Bonella who is from Edinburgh has had a varied career in the charity sector and now works freelance as a consultant supporting charities to improve what they do (mostly in the international development and equalities fields). last year she spent 3 months as an Ecumenical Accompanier in Israel Palestine. This programme was created in 2002 by the World Council of Churches to provide a presence in Palestine and Israel offering a protective presence, and witness to everyday lite. She was based in a small village outside of Nablus and will tell of her experience. There will be time from 7pm and after her talk to browse and buy from the lovely Olive Tree goods. Roads I am sure most of you in Bridge of Weir will now have noticed that the 30mph limit has been extended to just past St. Mary’s church. This has been a long process but I am just glad to see that this has now been finalised and hopefully it will have the desired effect of slowing drivers down upon exiting and entering Bridge of Weir.

BoW Gala Day 2020 I know many people were sad that there was no Gala Day in Bridge of Weir this summer however organising a Gala Day is a big task so if Gala Day 2020 is to happen, the Festival Committee need volunteers to get involved and help out. The next Committee meeting is on Tuesday the 8th October at 7.30pm in the Cargill Hall. I would urge people to consider going along to find out more about what is involved. After all, the more people who help out, the more responsibility can be shared out and support will be available for anyone who needs it. Hopefully we will see the Gala Day back up and running next year.

Bishopton Cemetery Following the removal of the boundary trees in Bishopton cemetery, I can confirm that I am chasing the progress of the next stage of works which aims to soften the look of the perimeter fence. As I have previously mentioned, the trees were removed to increase capacity within the cemetery itself however I think we can all agree that the way this was not handled in the best way. After I raised my concerns during the summer months, I was advised that the council would be planting a combination of shrubs and climbers this autumn to soften the look of the fence line. Now that we are well into autumn, I can confirm I am chasing this with the council to ensure that this is carried out and the original feel of the cemetery is re-instated.

Langbank Village Survey Langbank Community Council have prepared a survey for local residents to complete. The survey will be distributed around the village with handy post boxes placed in key locations, for ease of returning and the survey will also be available to complete on-line. This is all with the aim of determining what matters most to residents in Langbank, what are the main issues, concerns and ambitions for the area. This is a great way to gauge the opinion of local residents and direct some of the focus of the Community Council for the coming months. They are looking for as many people in the village to get involved as possible so I would encourage everyone who is able, to get involved and have your say on what matters most to you.

BAE Systems has donated £50,000 to the Bishopton Community Development Trust to help fund and support local community initiatives.

The focus for the Development Trust is to develop community-wide sports facilities at the Holmpark Playing Fields for tennis, football and rugby. The Trust has already invested in upgrading facilities including new goal posts, and equipment to maintain the grounds.

Bridge of Weir SWI On Thursday 3rd October we will be tasting various wartime foods and looking at recipes from 80 years ago when our ‘rural’ began in the village. We will be meeting at Old Ranfurly Golf Club at 7.15pm. New members and existing members will be made very welcome.

BAE Systems is in the process of redeveloping the former Royal Ordnance Factory site in Bishopton.

Dargavel Village is one of the largest brownfield developments in the UK, providing Bishopton with new housing, community and development facilities, improved road and motorway linkage and public amenity. The development was recognised at a national level recently having won the 2019 RTPI award for excellence in planning homes.

Langbank Church of Scotland Here at Langbank Church of Scotland we have been sponsoring three children through the Christian charity Compassion UK - for a modest donation each month, we support the education and well being of our three chosen children: Javier in El Salvador; Desy in Kenya; and Gemechu in Ethiopia. We write to each other regularly, and the children of our Sunday Club use it to learn more about the challenges of living and growing up in these countries.

Recently, Carrie Lasley gave the congregation an update about each of the sponsored children - Carrie also received an award for her excellent attendance at Sunday Club during 2018/2019. Carrie’s update was as follows: Hello everyone, we’ve had some news from all three of our Compassion UK friends that we’d like to share. Thanks to your generosity not only can we support the children with regular payments, we had some left over to send them an extra gift for their Summer holidays.

Javier in El Salvador tells us he has been getting regular medical checks from Doctor Dina at the Compassion Sunday School – he’s been told to cut down on junk food and eat more healthily, and he’s getting medical treatment for a tummy problem. Otherwise he’s in good health. We sent him a small extra gift recently, which he used to buy rice, cereal, chicken, milk, sugar, cooking oil, shampoo, and pasta.

He thanks us for our letter, and says that he and his family will be praying for all the families in Langbank, that God always keeps us healthy. He asks us to pray for his father that God watches over him while he works.

Meanwhile Desy in Kenya used our extra gift to buy clothes, rice, flour, and tea, as well as special treats like body oil and some sweets! She tells us that she and her family are doing very well, thanks us for our support, and says that her family pray that we are all in good health.

You can see that being healthy is very important to the children we support.

Letters from Ethiopia take much longer to reach us, so it was still early in the year when Gemechu wrote to us. He’d just gone back to school after Christmas, which he said is his favourite school holiday because it’s nice and sunny then – not something we can usually say about Scotland.

Bridge of Weir Community Council The September meeting of the Community Council was the final one of our 4 year term in office. The Chair thanked all members for the work undertaken on behalf of the village. He also thanked our Local Renfrewshire Councillors and Community Police for the work they had carried out during the period on our behalf.

A presentation was made to four long serving members who had announced they will not be standing for re-election, Vice-Chair and Planning Convener Tom Fulton, Minute Secretary Pat Allan, and members Helen Martin and Sandra Lafferty. The chair thanked them for having volunteered to serve to improve the village over many years.

Anyway, thank you for the amazing support you help us to give our three far away friends – I’m sure you can tell how much it means to them.

The meeting was only to complete outstanding business prior to the arrival of a new Community Council in October. Matters discussed included a report by the Traffic Calming Convener, she had earlier in the summer been informed that a contractor had been instructed to install new Traffic Calming measures at the Kilmacolm entrance to the village, however no work has taken place and she has had no response to emails sent to Renfrewshire Council as to why.

No progress has been made regarding a request for the Community Council to support a project for the upgrading of the private pavement on Clevans Road, we still await information from the owners.

We are waiting a response from a Council Official regarding the unsightly condition of the open space site at the Lintwhite Main Street Junction.

The Community Council welcomed the new play equipment at Houston Road Park and the repair to the wall at Gryffe Grove.

Tom Fulton After a considerable number of years of voluntary service Bridge of Weir Community Council’s Vice-Chairman and Convener of Planning Tom Fulton announced he was standing down at the forthcoming election.

Chairman Sandy Clark thanked Tom for his support in his role as ViceChair, however it was Tom’s role as Planning Convener where he excelled, he guided the Community Council through the planning process lodging numerous objections and comments to planning applications, responding to Local Development Plan consultations, attended hearings at both Renfrewshire Council Headquarters and with Scottish Parliament Reporters during the appeals process.

Tom developed a professional working relationship for Bridge of Weir Community Council with Renfrewshire Council Planners enabling us to get the fullest information when required.

Members of the public who attended the Community Council with individual Planning issues left the meeting at ease after Tom had given guidance as to their concerns.

Tom played a major role in protecting a number of greenbelt sites from development.

Bins: If you are having difficulty getting the council to replace a damaged wheelie bin or having the damaged wheelie bin removed then let me know and I may be able to help. I recently collected 2 damaged ones and found new homes for them after a small repair. Chasing the council to collect your rubbish is frustratingly monotonous. The number of assisted bin uplifts that are being missed is reaching an unprecedented amount. Council says that this will improve when they go digital but the process seems to be dragging on.

Langbank Survey: The Langbank Community Council survey forms will be delivered shortly, perhaps even with this magazine. The feedback from the community will help focus the LCC on what needs to be done in the village, so please complete your form and drop it into one of the many collection boxes around the village.

Healthcare: Official statistics show that there are now fewer beds in Scottish hospitals than there were a decade ago, at a time when hospital admissions are rising. In 2018-19 there were 13,105 available beds compared to over 1.2 million admissions. The SNP Government have been warned for years about Scotland’s expanding and ageing population, and the impact that would have on our NHS. On more of a local issue I understand that the Bishopton GP practice is at near capacity and yet plans to start building the new Health Centre are still some way off.

Roads: At last the new 30mph signs are going up close to St Marys Church in Bridge of Weir on the A761. I hope that drivers will respect these and the congregation of the church will feel a little safer when crossing the road.

Bishopton Art Group’s Christmas Art and Crafts Fair Saturday 16th November 2019 between 10am and 3pm at Bishopton Community Centre, Gledstane Road, Bishopton, Bishopton Art Group will host their annual Christmas Art and Crafts Fair. Who among you is wise?

As I write this mid-September and as you read this at the beginning of October we’re still not clear if, how and when Brexit will happen. I will steer clear of sharing my opinion on the matter itself, but I’m sure most of us can unite in the desire that our political leaders would be wise.

We need and want leaders who are wise, rather than just clever, cunning, skilled, knowledgeable, passionate, articulate and so on. These are useful and necessary skills and attributes for a politician, but without wisdom can be used to harm, damage and divide our nation.

But what is wisdom? Who is wise? The Bible places great stock on ‘wisdom’; it is seen as something that comes from God and can be found both through general reflection on life and through specific revelation from God. The book of Proverbs is full of such reflections – a lot of it makes sense even today, 2500 years after these were put to paper. For example, Proverbs 16 verse 18 says: ‘Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall.’ This is where we get our ‘pride comes before a fall’ from.

The apostle James writes in his letter (3:13-18): ‘Who is wise and understanding among you? Let them show it by their good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. But if you harbour bitter envy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast about it or deny the truth.

Such “wisdom” does not come down from heaven but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For where you have envy and selfish ambition, there you find disorder and every evil practice. But the wisdom that comes from heaven is first of all pure; then peace-loving, considerate, submissive, full of mercy and good fruit, impartial and sincere. Peacemakers who sow in peace reap a harvest of righteousness.’

Well there is something to aspire to! Wisdom is not just needed by and for politicians, but by each one of us, to be applied to our daily living, speaking, working, parenting and so on. The way to find wisdom is to begin by admitting we don’t know it all and then search for greater understanding.

This requires humility rather than pride. Happy searching!

Transport: The No 1/1A bus will commence on the 30th September from Quarry Drive /Finlaystone Road between 10am and 4pm. I am aware of how important this service is to folks in upper Kilmacolm. Thanks are due to Elaine Provan (Inverclyde Roads), Kenny Hutton (SPT) and James Easdale (McGills Buses) for their expertise in solving the problem that caused cessation of what is a lifeline service.

I have an assurance that the Scottish Water sewage works will finish in Finlaystone Road by the 29th.

Planning: Gladman are going to the Court of Session to challenge the Reporter’s decision to refuse the Carsemeadow Planning Application in Quarriers village. The Planetreeyetts application public hearing will be in October and the appeal to the Reporter by Gladman with regards our refusal of housing at North Dennistoun is expected any day now. No news on the West of Quarry Drive site, which was planning officers original preferred site for some 70 houses within the village. We now have no preferred site and will robustly defend the green belt.

Kilmacolm Civic Trust Autumn Talk

The Haven: I attended the 30th anniversary of the Haven, a refuge outside the village for young men suffering from addiction. The folks at the Haven do a wonderful job and have had some 900 addicts pass through their healing process, built on abstinence and faith. There have been many successes with young men returned to make a useful contribution to society.

RBS Service: Constituents are rather concerned about the RBS bus. Bill Drummond reports that when the driver is ill there is no replacement and the bus does not run. The current driver provides a good service but I shall seek assurances that the service is permanent.

Speaker: John Pelan, Director of the Scottish Council on Archives, will give an illustrated talk on how Scotland’s Archives not only provide the bedrock of society, but offer an incredible source of material for use in a wide range of situations and environments. They tell our stories, enrich our lives, connect us with the past and give us a sense of identity.

Garden Waste: From March 2020 we are introducing a charge of £30 per brown bin. This is designed to raise £289k per annum. Over the next two years we are having to make £7m in savings and shed 58 jobs.

All Welcome: Members of the Civic Trust, and all non-members who are interested in hearing the talk, are very welcome to attend. Wine/soft drinks will be available on arrival.

Policing: We receive on a monthly basis recorded crime in the village. The average is 14 crimes per month with a significant number being related to motor vehicles. We have excellent community policing and they can be often seen on patrol by foot, bike or van.

Schools: St Columba’s have excelled in the Highers with 26 fifth year pupils attaining 5 As. This is the highest figure I can remember and is a credit to staff, pupils and parents. Many parents of children at St Columba’s save hard to send their offspring to the school. They feel that the financial sacrifice is worth it.

Knapps Bonfire & Fireworks: The Bonfire and Fireworks will take place at Knapps, courtesy of Lord Mclay on Saturday 2nd November. Doors open 4.30pm, Bonfire lit sharp 6pm. Great traditional village event adults £5 youngsters £2. Greenock and Paisley displays cancelled last year, with us, the show must go on.

On Sunday 29th September - Dr Callum Henderson spoke about the work of Comfort International and brought samples of honey produced by the Nduba Community Bee-hive Project in Rwanda, a project set up by donations from our members.

Sacrament of Holy Communion will take place on Sunday 6th October at 11am.

Edith Forrest and her sister Marion Robertson will begin an 8-week, Bibleinformed course entitled ‘Christianity: A Practical Guide.’ Topics covered include fear/worry; integrity; the battlefield of the mind; the power of the mouth, and many more.

Each evening begins with a 25minute DVD followed by discussion and a time of fellowship. The course begins on Thursday 3rd October at 7pm in the Large Hall.

Kilmacolm Old Kirk: Old Kirk News The minister, Rev Dr. Peter McEnhill left to take up his new charge after the service on September 22nd. The Rev Gary Noonan, minister of Houston and Killellan, has been appointed Interim Moderator and a locum will be appointed in due course.

Rehearsals are continuing apace for Kilmacolm Dramatic Society’s production of The Wizard of Oz – for many years a great favourite with young and old alike.

‘OUTLOOK’ is a social community group, formulated for friendship and fellowship. It is led by the Community Issues team of Kilmacolm Old Kirk.

The group meets In Kidston Hall, 2pm - 4pm. Everyone is most welcome.

The play, directed by Heather Morrison, includes several songs and the cast are thoroughly enjoying learning and singing them. We’re delighted to have six children taking part in our production and they’re all looking forward to performing on stage in the Kidston Hall.

Parks: Since Renfrewshire Council’s Budget earlier this year crucial Green Spaces funding has been available to community groups in Renfrewshire who want to work with the Council to regenerate local green spaces such as public parks. I am therefore delighted that in the recent round of awards Kilbarchan Community Council has been awarded £75,000 for the upgrade of Kilbarchan Public Park, and the Howwood Public Park Committee has been awarded £50,000 for the upgrade of Howwood Public Park.

Flooding: Over the whole of our three villages, in Lochwinnoch, Howwood, and Kilbarchan, there have been episodes of flooding in recent months due largely to blocked gullies. I have therefore tabled a motion for the next Full Council meeting calling on a review of the current cleaning programme, as it simply is not delivering on the quality of environmental safety which my constituents deserve. In my next column I will update readers on the progress of the motion which I hope wins wide support from all sides in the Chamber.

Funding: After a sustained campaign I am delighted that Renfrewshire Council has cleaned up the fabric of Lochwinnoch War Memorial and also re-embossed the names on the Memorial, I would like to thank many village residents for their support to me in lobbying the Council on this sensitive matter. I am also pleased to inform my Lochwinnoch constituents that Castle Semple Visitor Centre is to receive significant investment of £38,000 from Renfrewshire Council both to upgrade the café and car park, and also to finance a new oral history project.

Greenbelt: On a less positive note I was the only ward Councillor to move an amendment against the re-zoning of Burnfoot Road in Lochwinnoch from Greenbelt to Housing Land Supply at the last meeting of the Housing and Planning Board. I am resolutely for public safety and against inappropriate large scale development on flood plain areas when there are many suitable brown field sites available. The Local Development Plan now goes to Holyrood for approval but I am not finished fighting yet on this issue.

Longest serving paperboy We’re sad to be saying goodbye to one of the longest serving members of our delivery team.

Ronnie has been delivering 1350 magazines to Lochwinnoch since our December issue back in 2009, and helped with the Boys Brigade to deliver before that from December 2007 until Ronnie took over.

Parks: I am pleased to report that there are ongoing discussions between Renfrewshire Council and the community in Kilbarchan and Howwood, in regard to improvements in the local parks. These proposed improvements to the infrastructure and play equipment are as a result of a £250,000 investment to five parks, which as part of the previous administration I helped to deliver.

In Kilbarchan drainage and path repairs were undertaken in July, with further work around the toddler play area due to take place following local consultation. Similar work in Howwood Park is planned with drainage and path repair work, and a new fence.

Renfrewshire’s newest baby class, Baby Mindful, aims to address that.

Baby Mindful classes are unique, peaceful, slow-paced classes very different to anything else out there. They follow a seven-step approach: move, play, stretch, feel, breathe, believe, relax which takes both parent and baby gently into a state of relaxation. Many parents say that their babies sleep much better after a session (and so do the adults)! Each step is beneficial for both parent and baby and helps to encourage baby’s social, cognitive, emotional, communicative and physical development while also allowing a wonderful, peaceful space for parent and baby to connect and enjoy being with each other. Parents leave a class with practical techniques to deal with their own stress levels, which can be used throughout their parenthood journey.

Classes are currently available for babies of 0-6 months but watch this space for further classes coming soon: 6-12 months, 12-18 months and pregnancy. One to one sessions are also available.

Transport: The Transport Scotland Bill published by the Scottish Government proposes changes to the powers available to local transport authorities to enable them to provide and regulate bus services. These include allowing councils to consider providing local bus services, bus service improvement partnerships, local service franchises, and information relating to services. As a bus user I have long argued for local control and regulation of services.

Since deregulation in 1986, rural bus services in particular have seen a slow and continuous decline, and have been starved of investment. 74% of all public transport journeys across Scotland are made by bus, compared to 19% by rail, however investment in the rail network is twenty times that for bus services, and this needs to change. These proposals are currently being considered by the Scottish Parliament, and I will urge that these options and changes be confirmed.

Continues on Mondays from 9.15am - 11.30am in the hall. The cost remains at £1 per adult and there are lots of toys for the small children to enjoy. The club will be open during the school holiday week. The Hallowe’en Party will be held on Monday 28th at 9.45am when the tots will show off their costumes.

Contacting the Council: I have received a number of complaints from constituents who have been experiencing difficulty in communicating with Renfrewshire Council. Contact with the council’s customer service section has over recent months, been exceptionally high, largely as a result of problems with the new arrangements for bin collections. In addressing this issue the council needs to recognise that despite the development of social media and digital communication platforms, a significant number of people wish to speak to someone directly, and delays and inability to do so is a source of frustration, Resources to improve this situation need to be provided, and I will monitor this over the coming months.

Community Councils: Finally the newly elected community councils will be meeting over the coming weeks. Many thanks to all those members in Kilbarchan, Howwood, Lochwinnoch and Johnstone who have served on their respective councils over the last 4 years, and have worked hard to improve their communities. For those who are remaining or joining, I look forward to working with you in the future.

Halloween Festival: I have very fond memories as a wee girl going door to door ‘guising’, as we called it then, during Halloween which is fast approaching. Renfrewshire Council via its Events Team is putting a fantastic Halloween Festival on this year for the weekend of Friday 25th Oct/Sat 26th October in Paisley, and I would urge all families in my ward to take advantage of what is on offer.

This year’s festival will be the biggest and best yet as the whole town centre will be transformed into a sinister outdoor circus with street theatre and death-defying aerial performers taking over the streets. On the Saturday evening, come and see the spectacular carnival-style Dark Circus parade with more than 300 performers, led by a sinister Svengali ringleader and choreographed by internationally acclaimed outdoor performance specialists Cirque Bijou. See magnificent floats, giant puppets, voodoo acrobats, ferocious fire performers and curious creatures all parading along to thrilling live music.

Houston and Killellan Kirk Gardening Club Success

“We Will Remember Them”

Some of our Church youngsters are members of Houston Primary School Gardening Club. They achieved much success recently with their entries of fruit and vegetables in the Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society Flower Show. Well done to everyone involved.

“JOIN UP THE DOTS”. The next meeting will be on the. 15th October when the Rev.Barbara Ann Sweetin will give us The Good, The Bad and The Ugly. Martin Cassidy will be our speaker on October 29th and he will talk to us about “Being a Male Midwife.”

Remembrance Sunday is, of course, the nearest Sunday to 11th November. So this year’s Remembrance Day Service will be held at Houston & Killellan Kirk on Sunday 10th November commencing at 10.45 am. As is the tradition, a retiring collection will be taken at this Service, to be divided evenly between Erskine Home and SSAFA. The Service will be followed by a short service and the laying of wreaths at the village War Memorial.

Foodbank Continuing Needs

After the tremendous response at the Harvest Thanksgiving, uplifted by the Foodbank van, the generous congregation at Houston & Killellan Kirk are not resting on their laurels but continuing to support Renfrewshire Foodbank www.renfrewshire.foodbank.org.uk every Sunday with a tin at a time. Every other Monday, and sometimes weekly, a large car load is delivered to Paisley. Those who operate the centre advise that donations are not held very long in the centre and that the greatest current needs are for tinned potatoes, tins of meat, tins of fish e.g. Tuna or pilchards, tins of fruit, custard, rice pudding, diluting juice, cartons of juice (not chilled), shampoo, bars of soap, toilet paper (ideally in packs of two or four), shower gel, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes. There is a particular urgent need for men’s toiletries.

In addition to supporting the Renfrewshire Foodbank, members of Houston & Killellan Kirk congregation and their friends, through Retiral Offerings, support a number of chosen charities. On Remembrance Sunday the offerings are split between Erskine Home and SSAFA, while at Communions, Easter and Christmas the collections are divided between the baby milk project in Mwandi, St Vincent’s Hospice and Riverbrae Additional Support Needs (ASN) School.

Kirk Young Singers Group The young folk in Houston & Killellan Kirk have the exciting opportunity to develop their singing skills under the leadership of the talented Laura McKee. They don’t need to have the X Factor initially, but who knows where it will lead. This is open to all Primary and Secondary school children, meeting in the Kirk on Thursdays (except school holidays) 7pm – 8 pm. There are no fees – so kids, why not come and give it a try?

Erskine provides support to Armed Forces veterans of all ages in Scotland, through care homes and a Veterans’ Village, including an Activity Centre, and is currently constructing 24 Single Living Apartments.

SSAFA is the UK’s oldest national tri-service charity, existing for over 130 years to relieve need, suffering and distress amongst Armed Forces veterans and their families, in order to support their independence and dignity.

St Vincent’s Hospice will be known to many as providing in-patient care to those with life limiting conditions, but also a day care service offering emotional and other support. About 70% of the running costs have to be achieved through fundraising. Riverbrae ASN School is based in Linwood, providing an appropriate learning environment for nursery, primary and secondary pupils with individual special needs. With many of the pupils requiring a sensory curriculum, the school needs additional financial support through fundraising.

The Mwandi Baby Milk Project has been supported for a number of years by sending funds through the Kirk’s Missionary Partners based in Zambia.

The money is used to purchase baby milk for children where mothers are unable to provide this. The Retiral Offerings from the three Communion Services on 6th October will go to St Vincent’s, Riverbrae and Mwandi.

Fireworks Phobias Many pets find Bonfire night a very frightening, stressful experience.

Signs of anxiety and fear can include: • Cowering or hiding

• Trying to run away or escape

• Passing urine or faeces in the house

• Dogs barking

• Restlessness e.g. Pacing and panting There are many products designed to help pets cope with scary situations, including diffusers which release calming pheromones, oral products to reduce anxiety and in some severe cases mild sedatives may be useful.

There are a number of things you can do to help your pet cope.

Before the fireworks begin: •

Walk dogs before it gets dark. indoors.

Keep cats

Feed your pet. A high carbohydrate meal may help make dogs sleepy and calmer.

Ensure the house and garden are secure. A very frightened animal may try to escape.

•

Settle your pet down. Animals will cope better if they are in safe, familiar surroundings.

•

Provide a safe hiding place for your pet.

Cats will often prefer to hide in an elevated position.

•

Turn on the TV or radio to provide some background noise and close the curtains.

The West Renfrewshire fundraising team recently visited Johnstone History Museum, located within the Morrison’s Johnstone store, as part of the open doors weekend. The store continually support Guide Dogs for the Blind with donations from the life size dog and counter top collection boxes and are well on their way to naming a second guide dog puppy. Their first guide dog puppy MOJO visited the store where staff got to meet him.

The flu vaccination is recommended to all our patients over 65 and who are in the at risk categories which include: •

St. Anthony’s having been previous winners of the UKLA Literacy School of the Year Award are excited to announce they have been asked to be judges at this years UKLA Book Awards. They will judge the non-fiction section aimed at 3 - 14 year olds. Submissions were received in June, whittled down to a long list by September and by March will become a shortlist that will produce a winner to be announced in Oxford in June 2020.

The Media Team had a great afternoon making the news at Sky Academy Skills Studio in Livingston in September. All 16 pupils worked very hard taking on their various roles as presenters, editors, experts, reporters or working with cameras. They left school at 10pm on Thursday 5th September and dropped off at the Horse Guards Parade. They walked up the Mall to Trafalgar Square and had a quick stop for breakfast. They met Lord Melvyn Bragg who was kind enough to stop for a picture. The pupils then went on to have a tour of Parliament and take part in a workshop.

After lunch it was time for a visit to the Imperial War Museum where all pupils visited the Holocaust section. All 43 pupils were amazing.

They answered lots of questions, asked some of their own and were incredibly respectful in the museum - all on very little sleep! We are very proud of them and loved the day. What a week to visit Westminster.

The UKLA Book Awards seek to celebrate children’s books in order to encourage teachers to increase their professional and personal knowledge of recently published high quality children’s books. It promotes the place of books for young people in all educational settings from nursery through to key stage 4. Selection committees and teacher judges are asked to look, first and foremost, for well-written, engaging ‘reads’ and, where appropriate, outstanding illustration and design. The unique UKLA Book Awards are the only awards to be judged entirely by teachers who are looking for texts that can “enhance all aspects of literacy learning”. The process ensures they are able to share the books with their classes and discover what genuinely works with young readers in each of the three age categories and so their judgements are soundly based on pupil response. The fact that the teacher judges reflect on their students’ responses to the books gives these Awards huge credibility and trust so that schools know the books will be in turn loved by their own pupils. The awards are equally valuable for parents looking to support the school environment and further encourage a love of reading at home.’

Mrs McBurnie and the whole school community are delighted to be a part of such a unique award, taking the opportunity to celebrate the love of reading.

Houston Toddlers We have had very busy month, lots of new children, mummies, grans and carers, hopefully enjoying the fun we have on a Thursday morning in the West Halls, Main Street, Houston. There is a wide selection of toys and games (we are currently looking for suggestions for new toys and activities).

St Benedict’s Exam Results

Its been lovely returning to Playgroup and welcoming all our new children who have settled well. Our first week back saw us looking at our numbers topic, the children enjoyed tracing numbers in shaving foam in our sensory play section. Pirates made a return to Playgroup and we enjoyed lots of fun crafts, digging for buried gold coins and finding precious jewels in ice. A week of the classic story of The Gingerbread Man was enjoyed by the children, having their very own bakery, lots of messy fun with flour, ginger and mixing bowls. We decorated our own gingerbread biscuits as a treat for the parents too. Lots of fun and learning through play.

SQA Exam Success

St Benedict’s High school has been celebrating very positive SQA results, across a number of measures, this year. Outstanding results in S4 saw 45% of the year group achieving 5 or more National 5 awards while in S5, 19% of pupils achieved 5 or more Highers - an 11% point increase from 2017.

St Columba’s School The Summer months are typically quieter for most, but not at St Columba’s.

Over the Summer we were delighted to learn of a number of achievements for pupils both on, and off, the sports field. The start of the new term has brought with it news of elite rugby training for a select few of our talented athletes as well as the Extended Project Qualification for three ambitious senior pupils.

The Extended Project Qualification or EPQ is an English and Welsh qualification held in high regard by many universities. It allows each pupil who undertakes it to embark on a self-directed project. Currently St Columba’s School is one of the only schools in Scotland who offer this qualification where pupils are required to produce a 5,000 word dissertation or a physical outcome such as a design, artefact or performance on a topic of their choice following 90 hours of research and taught skills. They are also required to present their topic to an audience of non-subject specialists.

As part of the research pupils were given an induction and passes to Glasgow University library. Along with this, pupils were taught referencing systems, planning, research and critical thinking skills.

Topics this year included the relevance of economist Adam Smith in the present financial climate, 1970s Cuban economic theory and the impact of drinks targeted at children on milk teeth.

The qualification is considered excellent preparation for university. It also helps guide wider reading and distinguishes candidates in their UCAS application. Many English universities lower their grade offer if an EPQ is achieved to a high standard.

This is St Columba’s first year of entry and an excellent start to this blossoming programme.

Meanwhile, a number of our rugby players were selected to train with Scottish Rugby Union’s Glasgow & the West Fosroc performance Rugby Academy.

Congratulations to Angus R (SVI), Aidan H (SVI), Fraser C (SV), Ben S (SIV) and Finlay M (SIV) who represented the school in the U18, U17 and U16 age groups respectively.

Selection for the Academy saw the boys participate in a tailored weekly training programme at the National Rugby Centre in Motherwell and take part in a series of fixtures around the country against their counterparts in Caledonia, Edinburgh and Lothian & the Borders. Ben S being selected to Captain the U16 team at all 4 games.

The fixtures provided a great opportunity for the boys to experience a more intensified, competitive environment and an opportunity to promote themselves for selection into SRU Academy and Age Grade Programmes.

The boys rose to the challenge with great results:Ben S and Finlay M have been selected for the Glasgow Warriors U16 Squad as well as the Glasgow & the West U16 Performance Development Programme.

Angus R has been selected for the Glasgow & the West U18 Performance Development Programme.

Aidan H and Fraser C have been selected to train with the Glasgow & the West U18 and U17 Long Term Development Programme.

Messy play on the way for every nursery in Renfrewshire

St. Fillan’s Primary School Skills Development Academy – ‘BUDS’ Afternoons: After a long and relaxing Summer holiday, we have all settled well into a new school session and our Primary one children already feel at home and part of our family! Their Primary seven Buddies have been keen to support them as they settle into their new school routines.

This session, we are keen to ensure that our children develop skills for learning, life and work progressively across the school from Primary one to seven.

We have planned afternoons which focus on skills development through a variety of interesting and varied learning contexts including coding, health and well being and financial education.

Our children have been super excited and enthusiastic to participate in these afternoon sessions which are based on enhancing our children’s understanding of our school aims.

Already, Primary one have taken part in a ‘Construction Workshop’ and we hope to share further news of our progress as the session continues.

House Captains & Leadership: Our new House Captains and Vice Captains have been elected to serve their ‘House Family’ within one of the four houses in our school.

Brand-new mud kitchens designed to inspire imagination and creativity through messy play are on their way to every council nursery in Renfrewshire thanks to an inspiring volunteer.

Renfrewshire Council’s Senior Warden Gail Scoular came up with the idea to provide the kitchens and fundraised in her own time to ensure there was no cost to the thirty-four nurseries, with the council’s Unpaid Work Team carrying out the work to create them.

Made from recycled pallets, they provide an immersive, multi-sensory experience for children to get their hands dirty making mud pies and soil smoothies while interacting with their peers.

The kitchens aim to encourage little green fingers to flourish by helping children discover the benefits of outdoor play and encourages them to use their imaginations to create culinary inventions.

The young children will see the benefits of working together and find enjoyment in the great outdoors, ensuring they appreciate their local environment which is a key tie with Renfrewshire’s Team Up to Clean Up campaign.

Donations were made by UNITE, GMB Union and enva which facilitated the purchase of tools for use in the mud kitchens.

They have publicly taken their pledge to commit to upholding our school vision, aims and values and leading by example by their words, actions and behaviour.

During our first ‘Meet the Teacher’ event, they performed their duties well by welcoming our families and visitors and organising consultations with our parents and carers around the launch of our ‘Curriculum Rationale’ and our ‘Nurturing Schools’ work around transition and change.

We wish them well in their journey to drive forward school improvement!

Three of our Primary seven children were successful at interview to facilitate our ‘Credit Union’ in partnership with the Johnstone Credit Union and one of our Parent helpers.

They have been keen to encourage their peers to save their pennies for a rainy day and we wish them well with their mission!

We look forward to the new school year ahead and to sharing our progress with you.

Kilbarchan Community Nursery All the children have now settled back into the familiar routines and have been planning what they would like to learn. In the outside area, the children have been interested in making their own pirate ship, complete with sails, flag and cannons. The children worked well together using the community blocks and one of the boys said ‘‘we need a cannon to shoot the other pirate ship, that’s on the pirate film I saw at grandpa’s house, it was Blackbeard.”

As part of our improvement plan we are developing a link with a local care home. This project is beneficial to both children and the older adults as the children develop confidence as well as respect and understanding for older adults. While they were there, they created playdough models and played threading games.

Bridge of Weir Primary Written by the P5b News Team; Alexander, Rhys, Daisy, Anya and Lewis This month we’ve seen new lessons and new teachers. However, what’s most important is…. the new pupils. The P1s have been settling in well with the help of their P7 buddies. James from P1 says his buddy, Jack Cook, has been very nice and they’re enjoying playing together.

We’ve been enjoying lots of the new additions to the school programme including events, lessons, and sport clubs. In addition to this, we’re getting branches over our classroom with owls representing different achievements. Well done to P3/4 who got the first ever owl in the school.

In other news, the P7s are very excited for the responsibilities which come with being the oldest pupils in the school. Sofia and Andrea from P7 said they can’t wait for the opportunities.

When interviewed, Amy said she’s loving being House Captain and Connie told us she loves the buddy system. It’s a great privilege for us that all the P7s are now learning how to play the guitar.

We also had success at Bridge of Weir’s annual Horticultural Society’s show!

Anya from P5b won the prize for the best exhibit in the children’s show – she made a miniature garden showing an alien crash-landing on a farm. We also had great success with the huge pumpkins and broad beans grown in our very own allotments. We will now be using these for cooking.

And finally, we are proud of the efforts of all the pupils, parents, and teachers who took part in the Paisley 10k and Fun Run. It was a great event and raised money for Erskine Hospital and our school funds.

Houston Primary School Welcome Back The pupils from Houston Primary School have returned after the summer holidays and have clearly grown over the past six weeks. We welcome our new Nursery and Primary 1 pupils and also very many other pupils who have joined us in other stages of the school.

We also welcome Mrs Campbell back from her secondment and Miss Tait to our staff team.

We look forward to a fun filled year of learning for all of our pupils.

Scottish Maths Week 30th September - 6th October This is a our third year of promoting maths as part of Scottish Maths Week. The aim is to give pupils the opportunity to experience the benefits, joy and beauty of maths in exciting new ways during this week, whilst making links to real life experiences.

This year we will be making posters and writing stories with a mathematical theme.

Gardening Club Our school gardening club has resumed and they have already harvested a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. Our inter-generational club, picked juicy black currants and then made them into delicious jelly.

Diabetes Care Award Mr & Mrs Moore were so impressed with the level of diabetes care their son Dylan was receiving that they nominated our support staff team to receive a Good Diabetes Care in School Award. Mrs McPherson was delighted to receive the award and especially proud of the dedicated support team who provide a high level of care throughout the school day to very many pupils.

Duchal Nursery School It feels like we are really in the swing of the new term at Duchal with all of our new children settling so well and already feel like well established members of our Duchal family.

Our rainforest theme is proving to be very popular and children have been making tribal necklaces to add to their animal and insect art work. We have also been busy with some STEM experiments with physics, chemistry and maths all playing a prominent role in our day.

As a specialist pre school nursery our teachers are dedicated to giving the children the best start in life and preparing them for their school years. With an experienced team of staff our children really do benefit with low pupil to staff ratio and our separate rooms allowing quiet study areas, away from the hustle and bustle of our busy creative areas.

SPORT news Lochwinnoch Athlete Leon Drynan (16) Named In GB Team Park+Pipe Squad 19/20 The official line up for the GB Teams snowboard squad for 2019/20 was recently announced, and we are delighted to note that local athlete Leon Drynan (16) from Lochwinnoch has made the grade.

Leon has only been snowboarding for around 5 years, so to be selected to the squad is a great achievement.

This is not the first time Leon has been selected to represent his country though.

In February he was out in Sarajevo at the European Youth Olympics competing in both Big Air and Slopestyle disciplines. He said ‘the experience was amazing! The opening ceremony was attended by thousands of people. It was an awesome feeling walking out with all the team behind the Union Jack’.

Last season saw Leon take home the titles of Overall British Indoor Champion, Overall Scottish Champion, U16 Big Air Champion in Laax, Switzerland. So, what does this season hold for Leon?

‘Being promoted to the squad is going to involve lots more travel and accessing international training facilities to ensure progression continues at a pace.

So far there are trips planned to Austria and Italy. I’m really excited to see what I can achieve this season’.

Leon currently trains 4 times a week and with the international trips scheduled for this season, there is a big financial commitment required.

‘Currently there is no real funding for an athlete at my stage, so each season is wholly funded by my parents. They’ve never done any fundraising as yet, but I think with the training costs required this season we’ll need to look at doing some. Hopefully the community will get behind it as I’d love nothing more than to bring an Olympic medal back home one day!’

Ranfurly Castle Ladies The weather recently has been playing havoc with end of season golf games, no one enjoys getting soaked, despite the saying ‘It never rains on a golf course’!

At the start of August Jan Macnab and Sheila Biggart represented the club at the Coronation Foursomes area final played at West Linton. Sadly they failed to make it into the Grand Final but finished a very creditable 4th out of 66 pairs on the day.

On 21st August 24 ladies enjoyed the annual Ladies Outing to Hilton Park Golf Club. The competition was a fun tri-am and although the day started dry it sadly deteriorated and the last groups got rather wet! Despite that, everyone enjoyed the day and the winning team, with 52 points, was Jan Macnab, Rosemary Ogilvie and Cynthia Keanie. Runners up team, with 49 points, was Agnes Williamson, Joy McLeod and Pamela MacKenzie.

The Ladies Invitation Day was rearranged for 23rd August when members and guests enjoyed a dry day and a greensomes format of golf. Winners on the day were Sheila Biggart and her guest Nicky Stirrup from Kilmacolm with 36 points. The runners up were Anne Judge and guest Margaret Gray from Old Ranfurly with 35 points.

Club Championship Finals day on Saturday 24th August had the sun shining and was beautiful for golf. A good crowd turned out to support the various finals being played during the day and Captain David Stewart was on hand to present the Trophies later in the afternoon.

Ladies Championship Final was between Jan Macnab and Denise Cowan, with Denise winning at the 17th hole after a very closely fought match.

The Worplesdon Mixed Foursomes Final was played between Stuart and Marion Munro and Stephen Thomson with partner Marissa Barr. Stephen and Marissa managed to take the Trophy having only managed to play their semi final match the night before almost finishing in the dark!

The Ladies would like to wish Professional Tom Eckford all the very best when he leaves the club at the end of September.

Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club Ladies Past Captains The annual competition of Lady Captains took place on Sunday 25th August.

Strathgryffe Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club Strathgryffe Tennis, Squash and Fitness Club recently held their annual club championships on a glorious late summer’s day. The highlight of the day was a gripping men’s final with Scott Docherty securing a maiden triumph, beating Lee Wishart in 3 closely fought sets.

With the ladies final being played at a later date, there were plenty of other closely contested matches.

The leading performing female player on finals day was Joanne Thompson, who won 3 of her 4 finals, most notably the Ladies Doubles Final with partner Sophie Dunlop.

The junior matches were equally impressive with the 18 and under boys doubles being the highlight as Kyle McKay and Andrew Wilson defeated Sam Goulding and Liam O’Brien in a high quality final. Kyle secured a second title of the day, defeating Andrew in the boys under 18 singles final.

Approximately 40 lady members joined with other local clubs to share in this prestigious event and support Team Europe on ‘Tartan’ themed Friday. An exciting, fun-filled day was had by all.

Kilmacolm Golf Club Congratulations to our Club Champions 2019 On Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th August our finalists battled it out over several rounds on an immaculately presenter golf course at Kilmacolm Golf Club. The competition was fierce, the weather was brutal and the standard of golf on display was nothing short of spectacular. With many matches going the full distance, it made a great spectacle of our sport. With the numbers whittled down, Sunday saw the final matches of the year’s tournament being bravely contested.

In the men’s final we had our Vice Captain Andy Farmer playing Gus Burns. This was an engrossing match that went all the way to the 18th where this year’s Champion Andy Farmer, emerged victorious. Well done Andy on your 12th Championship victory and well done Gus for getting to the final.

Our Ladies matches were just as keenly contested. In the semi-finals we had Megan Briggs against Anabel Kane and our Vice Captain Jackie Sayers against Romy Erskine.

These were both very close games but Megan and Romy won through to the final.

Sunday proved to be a fantastic match between Megan and Romy. The quality of golf was of an exceptionally high standard. Megan managed to emerge victorious this time and is again our Club Champion for 2019. Romy played beautifully and is definitely one to watch in the next few years. Well done Megan on your 16th Club Championship victory and to being Captain for the Scottish under 18’s team this year too!

Our Junior matches were as exciting to watch as the senior matches.

Congratulations to Mackenzie Holmes on his third successive year as Junior Champion. A very close match against Timmy Erskine produced some superb golf. Many thanks to both caddies, Harry and Murray and to our junior conveners, Lynda and Jim for all their hard work throughout the year.

Thank you to everyone who helped organise and support the finals. Special thanks to the Greens staff for presenting the course in good condition, the bar & catering team for keeping everyone fed and watered and the office staff for pulling everything together. Our events wouldn’t be a success if not for the selfless support of many members and a massive thanks is owed to the volunteers that helped make it such a fantastic weekend. Here’s to 2020 !

The Urban Historian launches new Heritage Walks in Paisley Stephen Clancy, The Urban Historian, runs Heritage Walks around Paisley, looking at aspects of Paisley’s history as you walk through the town. Heritage Walks are being run on a fortnightly basis on Saturday afternoons, while there are also frequent Sunday afternoon walks.

In addition to the walks, Stephen will be running a series of Genealogy Talks, aimed at the beginner, wanting to start researching their ancestry. Talks will include sessions on Scotland’s Old Parish Registers, Birth Marriage & Death records from 1855 and other major sources of information.

Stephen is Vice-chair of Paisley Thread Mill Museum, and a member of the Renfrewshire Local History Forum. In addition to this the Urban Historian is also advising the Renfrewshire Tapestry Group on historical aspects of the old County of Renfrew.

Ladies Open - 22nd August We welcomed over 100 ladies from far and wide to Kilmacolm. It was a huge success and despite the deteriorating weather there was some impressive golf.

Congratulations to our first prize winners Ann Mckenzie and Sandra Bell from the Old Course Ranfurly who were our worthy winners, playing in the worst conditions, with 34 points.

It was great to see so many ladies enjoying our course, catering and clubhouse facilities. Thank you for your continued support for our Open Day and for the compliments on the course condition. We hope to see you all again next year.

Renfrewshire Ladies County Golf Many congratulations go to Stella Bowie (Kilmacolm) and Brenda Duthie (Barthcart Castle) who won the County Greensomes Stableford Centenary Trophy over Cowglen Golf Course. They won with a fantastic score of 42 Stableford points. Extremely well played Ladies!

Before you Start your Fitness Journey…

You’ve made the first huge step. You want to be the best version of yourself and you possibly can be.

Here are 4 tips to help you on your health and fitness journey.

1. Patience. We all know the phrase ‘Rome wasn’t built in a day, and it couldn’t be truer. Results take time, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, 12 weeks… there is no real set amount of time. You just have to be patient. This is being made increasingly hard when we live in a society that we can get just about anything delivered to our door the next day with just a click of a button. This means we are becoming more impatient and that does not work when it comes to health and fitness and reaching your goals.

2. Consistency. Consistently doing the right things; moving every day, staying hydrated, sleeping well eating the right foods. All these things are going to help you achieve your goals. Eating what you want, drinking too much alcohol or skipping the gym whenever you want is going to stall your results and not get you to where you want to be.

3. Don’t compare yourself with others. In the world of social media this is something we seem to be doing more and more, but something we need to get out of the habit of doing. We are all on our own separate journey and we all get results at different times. We come from different backgrounds, with different jobs, different genetics, different injuries etc.

You are on your own journey so concentrate on yourself.

4. Enjoy it. Enjoy your journey, enjoy the highs and lows, enjoy the challenges and enjoy the results. Because if you enjoy what you are doing you are going to stick with it, and you are going to get the results.

Plans for £7.5m Renfrewshire sports facility transformation New plans for a £7.5m transformation of Renfrewshire’s sport facilities - including a new international-standard hockey pitch and cycling track - are set to go before councillors. Revised plans have now been prepared which could see investment in Ferguslie Sport Centre and the On-X in Linwood, while still delivering major improvements at St James.

The proposed plans would provide £3.25m for St James Playing Fields to include the complete replacement of the current outdated pavilion with new modern changing facilities, with four goodquality grass football pitches to be maintained, road repairs and resurfacing, with a new hardstanding area for parking, and at the suggestion of the local community, a new gravel path for walkers and dog walkers around the edge of the park, linking the access road with the local footpath network.

Another £3m for Linwood On-X to upgrade the existing sand-based hockey pitch to an international-standard water-based surface, which Renfrewshire does not have - potentially allowing 18-time men’s Scottish champions Kelburne Hockey Club, who currently play in Glasgow, to return to their home area, a new closed road circuit for cycling and running, creating a new community facility which would also allow the On-X to host multi-sports events such as triathlons, and with work due to start for Kilbarchan Athletics Club to build an indoor sprint track and gym at the On-X athletics track, the

proposed developments would bring new use for existing facilities and see the On-X become the area’s centre of sporting excellence; Councillors are also being asked to approve a loan of £200,000 to Kilbarchan Athletics Club to help them make up an unexpected shortfall in their funding for that project. And £1m for Ferguslie Sports Centre for a revamp and expansion of the existing and outdated changing rooms, plus upgrades to the two existing grass pitches. £250,000 of the overall £7.5m budget for this programme has already been spent on a new 4G artificial football pitch at this site, which opened last year and has already proved popular; The timeline for the proposed projects would see all work complete by end 2021.

The £7.5m budget for sports facilities is part of the £100m investment being made in Paisley’s cultural venues and outdoor spaces over the next few years. That includes a transformation of Paisley Museum into an international-class destination, and work to preserve Paisley’s Town Hall’s place at the heart of the town as a landmark entertainment venue.

£3m make-over for West Blackhall Street, Greenock Inverclyde Council and Sustrans, the walking and cycling charity, are each contributing £1.5million towards the project.

Councillor Jim Clocherty, Chair of the Greenock Town Centre Regeneration Forum, “Improving the environment at West Blackhall Street is a priority project for the council and for the Greenock Town Centre Regeneration Forum. There are many reasons why traditional town centres across Scotland and, in fact, the whole of the UK are in decline. This isn’t a problem that is confined to Inverclyde.

“Our goal, in the current difficult retail environment, is to make West Blackhall Street as attractive as possible to visitors, shoppers and diners alike with a view to increasing footfall and enticing people to stay in the area for longer. This will encourage them to spend more money at local shops, bars and food outlets, benefiting local businesses.”

The West Blackhall Street project is also designed to ‘future proof’ the area so that it will be compatible with more sustainable forms of transport and zero-carbon targets. The proposals will see the road being completely resurfaced and the drainage being improved to address long running issues with surface water and the condition of the carriageway.

Other key proposals include reducing the dominance of cars in the area by widening the pavements to create space for pedestrians and outdoor seating, reducing the number of car parking spaces by 29 (this will be offset by the creation of new parking on Jamaica Street), installing a 2m wide segregated cycle lane and planting trees down one side of the street to improve the street’s appearance and improve air quality.

The trustees are very disappointed to announce that the LEAP was unsuccessful in securing funding from the Scottish government’s Climate Challenge Fund. This has led to the closure of our energy saving and education projects and, sadly, a number of redundancies. We would like to thank the LEAP managers and staff - Scott, Jen, Susie, Lesley, Alistair, Ruth, Ingrid and Paul - for their outstanding work. They were a dedicated, conscientious, hard-working team. The energy saving and education work of LEAP was acknowledged to be a leader in local action to combat climate breakdown: innovative and effective it saved the equivalent of around 1,000 tonnes CO2 a year over the life of the project. We wish all our employees the best of luck for the future.

In amongst this gloom there is GOOD NEWS. The LEAP car club continues with separate funding and the trustees are aiming for it to go from strength to strength in the hands of Mike, who continues as the car club’s co-ordinator and Regine who joined us in July as the community engagement officer. Grants to kick start regeneration at industrial estate Inverclyde Council is offering companies on the Port Glasgow Industrial Estate grants of up to £75,000 to demolish derelict buildings that are blocking the area’s redevelopment and being targeted by vandals.

The aim is to stimulate regeneration and create jobs at the industrial estate, which is home to some of Inverclyde’s key local employers. Recent business closures have left a number of buildings on the site empty and vulnerable.

The scheme was first introduced in 2018/19 but generated little interest from local firms. The amount of help on offer has now been more than doubled from £30,000 to £75,000.

To qualify for the grant property owners need to show that their building has been empty for at least 12 months and that they have been actively marketing it for six months without any success. Grants are paid after the work has been done and can represent up to 50% of the demolition contract’s value.

Port Glasgow Industrial Estate is in the Dubbs Road area of upper Port Glasgow. The estate was built after the Second World War and was home to a number of major employers in the 1960s and 70s. It is estimated that the estate currently has a total floor area of approximately 803,000ft2.

Approximately 324,000ft2 of this is empty.

Car parking charges for Kilmacolm Inverclyde Council has drawn up plans to press ahead with charging for parking at six more local car parks.

The car parks involved are: • Kempock Street East and Kempock Street West, Gourock • Shore Street, Port Glasgow

• Fore Street, Port Glasgow

• Princes Street, Port Glasgow

• Lochwinnoch Road, Kilmacolm

Vehicles would still be permitted to park for up to three hours free of charge.

Staying longer than three hours will lead to a £2 charge. The charges will only be in place from Monday to Friday.

Where car parks are in residential areas and residents have no other parking available they will be able to apply for a permit. Currently these are free and allow the holder to park for longer than the time restrictions and free of charge in charged car parks.

Rotary Club ANNUAL CHARITY BBQ and DISCO This annual fund-raising event was held, once again, in the very pleasant venue of the Brookfield Village Hall, on Friday 30th August, with around 90 members and friends present. Steaks, salmon and sausages were excellently BBQ’d by a group of “Celebrity Chefs” from Bridge of Weir Scouts and served with a superb selection of salads and desserts, many provided by Rotary Ladies. Archie provided the disco music and as usual found just the right tunes to get those present onto the dance floor and in the groove. The charity raffle was generously supported and contributed to a total sum raised of around £1,700 for good causes. Thanks were conveyed to the Scouts, the Rotary Ladies and all the members and friends present.

Rotary Club SPEAKER MEETINGS Wednesday 21st August – Hugh Kerr introduced Tony van Breughal to speak on the topic “In praise of Scotland”. Tony was born in the Netherlands but has lived in Scotland for 50 years and for 20 years has had a house and studio on Arran. He worked as a graphic designer but then took up illustrating children’s books and, following the old traditions of Dutch map-makers, he has produced beautifully illustrated maps of various areas of Scotland, including Arran and Burn’s Country. Tony explained his love of Scotland and the contrast with his native land and showed examples of his work. Members purchased some books, maps and greetings cards and Tony generously donated the proceeds (£161) to Rotary charities. This money will be used to support an evening out for Young Carers.

Wednesday 28th August – Mike Farley, a past President of the club spoke on the topic “The Energy Trilemma and impact of Climate Change policies”.

Mike has been interested in the government’s energy policies since his time as Director of Technology and Technology Liaison at Doosan Babcock. The “energy trilemma” is the three-way conflict between cost, security and environmental impact. Mike described how policies have moved from carefully balancing the three to reducing environmental impact as governments have put increasing emphasis on reducing carbon dioxide emissions. The electricity system has seen a major shift to renewables and coal has been almost completely replaced by gas. On cold windless days the system can only just meet demand and is much more susceptible to any failures of generating plant.

Future plans, just passed into law, for “net zero emissions” by 2050 (2045 in Scotland) will require a reduction in the use of natural gas for heating, a switch to electric and hydrogen vehicles, and require carbon capture and storage to net off any remaining use of fossil fuels.

Wednesday 11th September – Andrew Macleman introduced Steve Newman, who is now a local farrier having served for 24 years in the Army. Steve spoke about Military Working Animals in the modern army, but started with a brief historical review of their use over the years, including horses, camels, mules, elephants, cats, mice, pigs, goats, bats, rats, sea-lions, dolphins, turkeys, chickens and, quite recently, bees! Currently the UK Army has some 600 horses in 3 regiments, though that compares with some 6 million deployed during WW1. He described the use of horses in ceremonial occasions, for protection duties and as pack horses in mountainous regions where there are no roads. Dogs are used for security purposes and for detecting explosives, drugs etc.

He mentioned that animals are awarded medals and he described the health care and holidays that they receive. A fascinating insight into a little known aspect of the current military scene.

Employer, Worker or Self-Employed? by Dallas McMillan, Solicitors An individual doing paid work is either self-employed, “a worker” or an “employee”. Determining which category applies to each individual can sometimes be difficult but is very important for the individual’s work rights.

“Employees” in contrast have all of the employment rights of “workers” plus important additional rights, including

Those self-employed work in their own business, at arms’ length for their clients/customers. They have no employment law rights but instead contractual rights under their work contracts, governed by contract law. It is vital therefore that these contracts contain proper protective clauses.

(b) statutory redundancy payment, maternity and paternity leave and pay,

“Workers” are not self-employed. They have some employment law rights, including rights to (a) be paid at least the national minimum wage, (b) be paid annual leave, and (c) rest breaks. Employers of “workers” also owe them important health and safety duties of care.

A “worker” is defined as “any individual who undertakes to perform personally any work or service for another party, whether under a contract of employment or any other contract.” The contract can be express or implied, verbal or written. What matters is that the work is performed personally, for someone who is not the individual’s client/customer.

An employee is “any individual who has entered into or works under…a contract of employment.”

In determining which category applies, Tribunals and Courts will analyse the true day-to-day working relationship between the individual and the employer, rather than focussing unduly on the wording of contracts often drafted in the interests of the employers.

If anyone is in any doubt regarding employment rights, they should seek urgent legal advice.

Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Society Our first meeting of the season is entitled “Profusions of Pumpkins”. At the recent Flower Show both Bridge of Weir and Houston Primaries entered fabulous specimens. We will celebrate the schools’ efforts, along with those grown by community-spirited locals, on Thursday 24th October and, to allow younger growers to attend, will start at 7pm.

The venue will be The Bridge.

This month, gardeners will be tidying and preparing for winter. Collect leaves to make leaf mould but dispose of any scabby ones in the grey bin to avoid transferring diseases. Keep leaf mould separate from your compost contents. Leaf mould involves fungal breakdown whereas compost is bacterial. Leaf mould makes a good mulch and compost a good soil conditioner. Fork the soil around roots and sprinkle with Blood, Fish & Bone - an organic slow release fertiliser which will boost roots and encourage bud formation, then cover with well-rotted leaf mould for a further boost.

The Flower Show took place at the Primary School and a colourful selection of plants, flowers, fruits and vegetables were on display. Despite the vagaries of our August weather [remember the hailstones and heavy showers and the hot and dry sunny days?] there was a terrific range of entries: lots of apples, tomatoes, rhubarb and pumpkins but not so many soft vegetables such as lettuces and cucumbers and fewer cabbages and cauliflowers. Robust entries came from herbaceous borders, bountiful pot plants - including a glorious white Gloxinia and a Fuchsia heavy with pink pendulous flowers - and exotic Cacti and Succulents, including one with a star-shaped, wine-coloured, hairy flower which gave off a stinky whiff but one irresistible to insects. The children’s entries included a multi-tongued monster made from a large marrow spouting long, green bean fangs and a dainty penny-farthing bicycle made from orange slices alongside carrot ‘bollards’.

Kilmacolm 140th Anniversary Flower Show The Kilmacolm Flower Show which was held in the Cargill Centre on 7th September held its tradition of being a time to admire the quality of entries in Flowers, Vegetables, Pot Plants, Tubs, Floral Art and Home baking, with a special section for Novices too. The wet and windy weather prior to the Show meant a shortfall of Cut Flowers from the gardens. It was pleasing to see several new exhibitors to the Show, and new faces winning the trophies too. Our thanks go to the loyalty of our members and visitors for supporting the Show, to the panel of experts who ran the Gardeners’ Question Time, and to the team who worked so hard to ensure a happy friendly day for everyone.

The first of our Winter Lectures will be held on Wednesday 16th October at 7.30pm in the Kilmacolm Community Centre, with refreshments following the lecture. We are delighted to be welcoming Mrs Nancy Stevens, the chairman of Baldernock Gardening Club, a journalist in her spare time, presenting her talk with pictures of ‘Delightful, Delovely, Deranged, aren’t plants wonderful?’ Everyone welcome, come along and join the K.H.S. - an annual subscription of £5 offers lectures, spring bulb competition, coffee morning, summer outing and free flower show entry.

Bridge of Weir Hillwalkers The BowHWers have had a couple of interesting outings recently in very mixed weather.

A walk along the West Highland Way from Victoria Bridge to the new King’s House Hotel was most enjoyable especially when the Monsoon went off. It was good to reach the King’s House and to enjoy the fully upgraded bar and other facilities.

October Events

September saw us at Tighnabruaich walking the Cowal Way to Loch Riddon via the Kyles of Bute. At first it was an easy track but then it became a temperate jungle walk with rocky scrambles, huge boulders, timber walkways, constantly running water and ubiquitous bogs. Then the rain went off and a Summer’s day arrived and the trek became very enjoyable and quite challenging.

We had coffee overlooking a sun-kissed Kyles of Bute and then a Clyde cruise back to Gourock in warm sunshine.

October will see us in the Pentlands, the Trossachs and Fairlie Glen.

Autumn at the reserve is easiest observed through the change in colour of the woodland trails. Many of the trees will now be a mixture of golden browns and reds with autumnal berries providing an extra splash of colour and food for hungry wildlife. Look out for flocks of thrushes feeding among the trees or bank voles nibbling on blackberries as you wander along the pathways.

A visit to our improved ‘Channel Hide’ with wheelchair accessible viewpoints, and only a short distance from the visitor centre is a great spot to look out for kingfishers. Whereas the more adventurous may wish to stroll the Aird Meadow trail and look for arriving migrant ducks such as teal, wigeon and goosander. If you are new to bird watching, or just want to develop your identification skills, check out our ‘birds for Beginners’ course running Sunday 20th October.

For younger visitors we have an exciting activity to keep them occupied during the October school break. Why not bring them along to take part in our ‘Squishy Squashy Trail’ which will be available daily from Saturday 12th till Friday 18th October or our ‘Halloween Pumpkin Hunt’ which is available from Saturday 19th October until Sunday 3rd November.

Tips for Bonfire Night

Both ranger teams have been busy with schools doing a variety of topics including owl talks, den building, bug hotels and river studies.

Always make your bonfire a good distance from the house, on soil rather than grass and away from any overgrown area of the garden. If your garden is small then best attend an organised bonfire. Keep the fire well clear of fences and trees and always keep a bucket of water handy just in case.

The volunteer groups in the park have been busy removing rotten benches at Muirshiel, finishing off the repairs at Downies bridge and installing a picnic bench in Parkhill Wood. At Greenock they have been carrying out wildlife surveys and digging drainage channels.

The main project at Muirshiel over the winter will be clearing the sitka spruce brashing piles so we are ready to plant trees in early 2020. If you fancy helping us then why not come along to one of the monthly practical conservation events on a Saturday, the next one is 11am – 3pm on November 9th.

The App That Could Save Your Life

Have you ever struggled to find a friend at a festival or event? Had a package taken to the wrong place or entrance? Or, more worryingly, managed to get lost when out walking? Most people will have experienced some type of situation where it has been difficult to explain their location or find the location of something or someone they are looking for. An app called what3words could put an end to these geography-based problems forever.

It is worth noting that even if you are without signal when you get into difficulty, but providing you have the app, one person in your group could go looking for help armed with the three word code.

What is it? How does it work?

Who thought of it?

What3words divides the world into 57 trillion squares, each measuring 3m x 3m and each with a unique threeword address, which means if you have a smartphone you can pinpoint to a few meters the position of someone or something. For example, 10 Downing Street is Slur. This. Shark. And Edinburgh Castle is Buck. Ears. Match.

The idea was borne from company founder Chris Sheldrick’s postal problems growing up in a rural Hertfordshire.

Chris had a discussion with a mathematician, and they discovered that there were enough combinations of three words for every location in the world.

Kicked.Converged.Soccer.

Mongolia uses it for its postal services; Lonely Planet uses it in its places of interest; Mercedes Benz has included its system in its cars; fire services are using it to tackle large bush fires. What3words is now being used in 35 languages. The app is free to download and police are urging everyone to download this simple, yet powerful app.

These three words saved a young girl, Jess Tinsley, and her friends when they got lost in a 4,900 acre wood in Co. Durham one wet night. After calling 999 the police call handler asked them to immediately download the app and within a minute the emergency services knew

e: info@advertizer.co.uk | t: 01505 613340 It’s almost a year since Brighter Bridge of Weir’s proposal for a ‘Memorial Garden’ was a winner of the Memorial Society’s award of £1,000 to develop the project. Our plan for original site at Livery Walk, at the gable end of the shops and flats by the car park, was stymied by potential land ownership issues, and Renfrewshire Council then offered us another site, just across Livery Walk. That involved a lot of legal work, but at the end of September we were given the go ahead, and a formal cheque hand-over took place at the new site.

Paisley Colour Photographic Club The series of Thursday evening meetings are packed with quality lectures and competitions and visitors and potential new members are welcome to come along and sample our passion for photography. The new site is quite a bit bigger and there’s a lot of work to be done, but as well as featuring a memorial to the sacrifice of the people of the village in The Great War, we’ll also include a celebration of Bridge of Weir’s heritage.

So, while we prepare the site, we’ll be looking for some more funding, and maybe for ideas too, about what local folk think best represents the heritage of Bridge of Weir from its origins to the present day. You can contact us through our Facebook page.

During the summer, the club has enjoyed some considerable success in national and international competitions. The stunning images above, “Boats In Mist” by Robert Fulton (awarded a FIAP Ribbon at the 2019 International Exhibition of Photography in Edinburgh) and Alison Smart’s “Evening Light On The Chateau Plains” (awarded top landscape projected image in the Scottish Photographic Federation’s Portfolio Competition) have been part of that success.
