this month So The Advertizer has hit the big 300! When I started the magazine as a four page flyer, just around Kilmacolm, I never dreamed it would become as popular and as far reaching as it has. This was supposed to be a wee part-time job to see me through the early years of bringing up the family.

And now the family is grown up and working in the office!

The Advertizer flourishes thanks to the many advertising clients who support the magazine, the contributors who provide the news and events each month, and the readers who give us such good feedback each month.

September is the month of Doors Open Days and there are plenty of interesting buildings to have a look around. We’ve got some listings in the magazine but for a full and comprehensive list and details of how to get entry, please visit the website at http://www.doorsopendays.org.uk/ and enter the region you are interested in.

There is an article on p10 about the coming of the railway to our community, which ran through the villages of Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm. Sadly, the railway was closed in 1983 and although there is a growing surge of support for the reinstatement of many lines around the country, this cannot happen if councils allow building development on and around the still existing pathways that the lines lay on. This was brought to the fore recently as yet another developer submitted a proposed planning application for the land next to the old station building in Bridge of Weir. Hopefully our local councillors will encourage the council to look at the long term goals rather than the short term situation.

We’re delighted to hear that local music events will be returning to the Carrick Centre with their wonderful Carrick Nights. We hope to bring you news of events in the coming months. We are very lucky with our local music and drama scene, as we already have a number of events held in various venues in the local villages, and this will enhance our music experience in Houston as well.

There were impressive exam results across all the local schools this year.

Plenty of news on that in our schools section. To everyone leaving school and branching out into the big world of work or further education, good luck.

To pinch some great advice from a good friend, no matter what your results were, you still have options. And it’s what you do next that matters.

On a personal note, I would like to congratulate former Advertizer delivery girl, Heather Gould for winning her dream job at Inverclyde’s “The Recruit” programme. I’m sure this is only the beginning of a sparkling career!

And finally, I can’t really believe it but I was asked the other day if I knew the date for the Knapps Bonfire. Just for info, it will be held on Saturday 2nd November! We like to keep you all up to date!

St. Vincent’s Hospice regret to announce that due to unforeseen circumstances, they have taken the decision to cancel their “Step Up” sponsored walk event which was scheduled to take place on Sunday 1st September at Castle Semple, Lochwinnoch.

Commenting on the cancellation, Fundraising Manager for St. Vincent’s, Carol-Anne Lamont, said: “For the last two years, Step Up has been one of our most popular events, and we were once again looking forward to welcoming you all to join us for a beautiful walk in a couple of weeks’ time.

“Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of our Fundraising team and some wonderful supporters, there simply hasn’t been the public interest or signups for this event to make it possible to go ahead.

“Events like Step Up, not only require time and effort from our staff and volunteers, but we also have to consider the costs of running this event. As a local charity, we have a responsibility to make sure that every penny is used to ensure we are offering the highest possible standard of care to our patients and their families. Sadly, in this instance, this event is not able to go ahead.

“We know some of you will be very disappointed, and want to thank everyone who had already signed up. Members of the Fundraising Department will be in touch shortly, or alternatively you can contact us directly on 01505 705635.”

Not to be disheartened, the Hospice are keeping the spirit of the event going, with their new Step Up Challenge! Can you walk 30 miles in September?

By walking just one mile every day from Sunday 1st until Monday 30th September, St. Vincent’s are challenging the community to Step Up all through next month, encourage people to sponsor you and support the Hospice.

Carol-Anne added: “While we know some of you will be disappointed that the traditional Step Up event will not be going ahead, we are really excited at this opportunity to try something new, to capture the energy and enthusiasm we know that so many of you have for our Hospice!

Renfrewshire launches new Respectful Funeral Service Communities in Renfrewshire will be supported with the cost of a loved one’s funeral thanks to a new service offered by Renfrewshire Council.

The council is working closely with local funeral directors to provide a ‘Respectful Funeral Service’, which enables families to access a tailored funeral package that is dignified, professional and affordable.

Designed to remove any unnecessary pressures after the loss of a loved one, the package will offer savings of up to 63% on the Scottish average cost of a funeral.

The Respectful Funeral Service package would include: ● collection of the deceased from within Renfrewshire or any NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde property ● care and preparation of the deceased ● a choice of coffin ranging from light or dark wood effect, or environmental. ● a place of rest and viewing facilities ● a hearse and one family car ● arrangements on the day of the funeral Additional services can also be provided and can be discussed with the funeral director directly.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “Losing a loved one is an extremely difficult time and we want to remove the pressures for people, such as cost, as best we possibly can.”

Seven partners have agreed to be part of the new service and will offer a Respectful Funeral Service to Renfrewshire residents.

Groups invited to join Spooktacular parade for Paisley Halloween Fest Friday 25th & Saturday 26th October 2019 - PAISLEY The award-winning festival – the biggest of its kind in Scotland and one of the UK’s must-see Halloween events – will take over Paisley town centre on Friday 25th and Saturday 26th October.

Last year’s festival was the biggest yet – with 34,000 visitors to Paisley and worth more than £1.9m to the local economy.

This year’s event will have a theme of ‘dark circus’ – with the parade coordinated by internationally-acclaimed performance specialists Cirque Bijou, who want school and community groups to work with them in the run-up to the event and take part in the parade on the day.

They are looking for people to take part in carnival workshops and street theatre, dance and musical performances. Any interested groups should contact events@renfrewshire.gov.uk Julian Bracey, artistic director of Cirque Bijou, said: “We are really excited to be part of this year’s celebrations. We have some amazing workshop leaders and are looking for local schools, groups and individuals to work with to make this years festival the spookiest yet.”

Louisa Mahon, Renfrewshire Council’s head of marketing, communications and events, said: “We are proud of how our Halloween Festival has grown to become the biggest of its kind in Scotland and an event with UK-wide profile.

“But we are also proud of the way it allows the many talented community and youth groups in Renfrewshire to work with and be inspired by artists of national standing. Our local groups will love working with the talented team at Cirque Bijou and help make this year’s parade as colourful and lively a spectacle as ever.”

The full programme for this year’s festival is currently being finalised and will be announced in August – along with changes to the event site for this year.

The Halloween Festival is one of the top dates within Renfrewshire’s major events programme, which brought 160,000 attendees and a £4.7m economic impact into the area in 2018 alone.

Presbyopia comes to us all!

by Kerry Taher, New Vision Opticians Presbyopia is part of the natural ageing process of our eyes and starts to affect most of us in our early forties.

The crystalline lens in the middle of each eye, responsible for focusing on things close-up, becomes progressively less flexible and unable to focus properly. This usually first presents as a difficulty in reading small print, holding the print further away to focus (“arms aren’t long enough” syndrome) or the need for brighter light when reading.

There is no cure for presbyopia, but there are solutions! Simple reading glasses can be prescribed. Care should be taken with over the counter readers though - the prescription will be the same for each eye, astigmatism won’t be corrected and the centre of the lens may not match the eyes perfectly. Prescribed glasses are made-to-measure so the frames and lenses will be fitted professionally. Bifocals or varifocals can be better options if a distance correction is also required. Bifocals have a visible line on the lens, separating the distance and near powers. Varifocals are the most popular option nowadays due to the fact they have many powers to allow focusing at many different distances but with no visible line. Trifocals are rarely used they have 2 lines separating three powers.

Contact lenses are another popular choice with options available for daily, two weekly or monthly disposables. Monovision, where one eye is corrected for distance and the other for reading, is another option and although it sounds strange it can be surprisingly effective. With all options, whether it’s glasses or contact lenses, it may take a few weeks for the brain to adapt.

As always, if you notice any changes in your vision, you should have an eye examination to identify the exact cause.

Coming of the Railway to Kilmacolm Little did the small village community of some three hundred souls in 1830 realise what an impact George Stevenson’s first railway from Stockton to Darlington would have on Kilmacolm.

This historical event marked the beginning of the second industrial revolution, which transformed the British and World economy. Thirty-nine years later, in 1869, the railway came to Kilmacolm.

At about that time, the number of routes offered by steamship companies on the Clyde steadily expanded. The connection offered by the Caledonian Railway in Greenock to the quayside was not particularly commercial as the railway station in Greenock was in the middle of the town. The Glasgow and South Western Railway Company saw an opportunity to provide a route with better connections to the Clyde Steamships by building a branch line through Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm right up to the quay in Greenock.

This was the commercial reason why the railway came to Kilmacolm.

The result was that the village greatly benefited and was transformed beyond recognition. It also gained something of a reputation as a holiday resort with its bracing air and easy access to the city. Within thirty years, the population doubled as merchants and businessmen from Glasgow rushed to compete for the most valuable places to build their grand villas.

It also meant that wealthy incomers ensured that public services made use of the new technology at the earliest possible time.

For the locals, the railway afforded easy access to work opportunities in Glasgow, Paisley and elsewhere. It was said that the early train was for the “strivers”. The second train, which would arrive in time to reach city centre offices by about 9am, was for the “thrivers”. The third train for the company directors, senior stockbrokers, etc. – the “drivers”.

However with the increase in use of the motorcar and the decline in passenger use on the railway, it became uneconomic to operate and it was closed on the 8th of January 1983. A copy of a ticket bought by a passenger for the last journey from Kilmacolm to Bridge of Weir in 1983 is shown. The railway line was then converted into a cycle path and is now part of the Clyde to Forth cycle route (National Cycle Route 75).

James Caldwell (1818-1909) James Caldwell erected a grave stone in Kilbarchan Parish Church, beside the now blocked Beltrees Door, in memory of his parents and siblings. His father was a silk handloom weaver in Kilbarchan. Although James was born into a Kilbarchan weaving family James did not follow the weaving trade. He became a writer (lawyer) in Paisley and lived with his wife, Janet, and their large family in Craigielea Place in Paisley.

James Caldwell was a prominent gentleman in the Paisley area and had a plethora of varied interests. He was a member of Paisley Burns Club and of the Society of Antiquaries of Scotland.

In 1874 he was one of eleven members of Paisley Burns Club who attended a meeting held in the Mason’s Arms in Kilbarchan to celebrate the hundredth anniversary of the birth of the Kilbarchan poet, Robert Allan. He acted as lawyer for Kilbarchan General Society and is likely to have been a member. He also had a keen interest in local history and collected and transcribed old manuscripts. Four handwritten letters from the correspondence of the Paisley poet, Robert Tannahill (1774-1810) were in his collection.

He maintained his long-term interest in the history of Kilbarchan. He had in his possession The Rental Mrs Napier’s Estate, 1785. This document detailed the names and feu duty paid by the hundred and nine residents who lived in houses in Kilbarchan built on Milliken lands. James Caldwell gave this document to Rev. Robert MacKenzie who included it in the appendix of his Kilbarchan, A Parish History. James had also in his possession the Kilbarchan register of baptisms and marriages. Three years after his death in 1909, this document was edited by Francis Grant of the Scottish Record Society and published as The Index to the Register of Marriages and Baptisms in the Parish of Kilbarchan, 1649-1772. These valuable resources are still of considerable relevance in family history research today.

A less academic interest was wood turning. In 1873 James acquired wood from the last fir tree cut down in Craigielea Woods and turned sixty cups from the solid wood to gift to his friends. He inscribed two verses of Tannahill’s song, ‘The Bonnie Woods of Craigielea’ on one side and the words ‘This caup, made from part of the Bonnie Wood of Craigielea’ on the reverse.

Johnstone History Society This is just a short reminder that our meetings start again on the Tuesday 10th September and as usual it will be in the Masonic Hall Collier Street at 7.30pm. Our first speaker of the session will be Iain McGillivery and his subject is Alexander “Greek” Thomson who was well known for the many Glasgow buildings he designed. We look forward to welcoming as many as possible both members and visitors alike .

The Museum has been open throughout the summer and has seen a fairly steady flow of visitors. Keeping the Museum open despite volunteers going on holiday has only been possible due to the small band of dedicated volunteers we have, however new volunteers would be welcome so if you have any free time Wednesday Friday or Saturday come in and speak to any of our volunteers on duty. Doors Open day this year is the weekend of the 7th and 8th of September and the Museum will be will be open from 10am till 4pm both days. The children who come along will be able to have their books stamped and take part in our quiz with or without their parents help. We looked forward to seeing as many people as possible on these days.

Free parking in Paisley town centre pilot underway Visitors to Paisley can now take advantage of three hours free parking in the town centre as part of a pilot to test the impact on local businesses and encourage people to spend their money locally.

Brought forward by the Paisley Town Centre Car Parking Working Group, the six-month pilot will identify if a period of free parking will increase footfall in the town centre and entice people to stay local.

Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson, Chair of the Working Group, said: “Paisley town centre has so much to offer and we want to make it as easy as possible for people to visit and spend their money locally.

“We’ve been working closely with local businesses and partners to identify how the council can best provide its support and they’ve identified that a period of three hours parking could boost footfall in the town and increase trade within their businesses.”

The Paisley Town Centre Car Parking Working Group is made up of elected members and officers from Renfrewshire Council, Paisley First, local public transport operators and local private car parking operators – and the pilot is the product of regular meetings to discuss positive plans for Paisley town centre.

New parking meters are being installed in each of the six car parks which will accept both coin and contactless payment. Every vehicle will still need to display a ticket, but free parking will be available for their first three hours after 10am, Monday to Saturday - after which charges will apply.

Charges are being reintroduced on a Saturday in all council-owned car parks, with the six pilot car parks having the first three hours free, as analysis has shown a lack of availability of spaces in the town centre with people using it as a park and ride facility.

Parking will remain free all day on a Sunday in all council-owned spaces.

There is no change to on-street parking charges, with evening and weekend parking remaining free, and the car park at Renfrewshire House will remain available for free on evenings and weekends.

The six car parks involved in the pilot are Orchard Street, Weighhouse Close, Hunter Street (upper and lower), Oakshaw and School Wynd, a total of 186 spaces and approximately 20% of the council’s off-street parking spaces.

This is particularly true when it comes to health and beauty advice with celebrities and “influencers” extolling the virtues of the latest products.

The problem with this is knowing what information to trust as some of the beauty trends can be harmful to your teeth!

Natural toothpastes have become popular but often contain little, if any, fluoride – to prevent tooth decay The British Dental Association (BDA) recommends toothpaste containing 1350-1500 parts per million (ppm) fluoride.

Charcoal toothpaste is one of the more recent products said to have teeth whitening properties, however there is no evidence to support the claims and dental experts are wary about the abrasiveness which could erode the enamel that protects teeth.

Other celebrity-led fads include drinking apple cider vinegar and swishing with ayurvedic oils – again there is little evidence to support any health benefits and, whilst oils are unlikely to cause much harm, vinegar is an acid and is damaging to enamel.

Teeth whitening is now part of the mainstream but access to online products means that there are much higher risks associated with this trend.

The maximum concentration of hydrogen peroxide allowed in a consumer whitening product in the UK is 0.1 per cent whilst dentists are allowed 6 per cent. Online kits can often contain much higher amounts than this which is why it is important to go to a qualified dental professional for any of the more effective teeth whitening treatments.

Classics at Castle Semple Returns in October ‘Classics at Castle Semple’ Car show will return to the shores of Lochwinnoch for its 9th year this Sunday 20th October, with proceeds going towards supporting St. Vincent’s Hospice.

An essential for any car lover and a fun day out for the whole family, the event will run from 11am until 3pm, with special attractions, extremely rare models and prizes to be won.

Chosen charity for the event, St. Vincent’s Hospice, is a specialist provider of palliative and hospice care for people and families affected by life limiting conditions from all across Renfrewshire.

Event Organiser and Visitor Centre Assistant at Castle Semple, Jane Fawcett, said: “It’s not all about Jags and Mercs – it’s the less obvious classics which people think fondly of. The one their Granddad had, their first car, the factory they worked in or the first car they ever saw. Last year, we had some superb entries – a stunning Mark 1 Granada, a beautiful Austin Devon, a Morris 1000 that has been in the same family from new and an incredibly rare Fordson 1946 van.”

“It’s a very friendly show with a relaxed feel for seasoned car rally attendees.

I think that’s what makes it special – oh, and the view, of course. The visitors love it!”

Last year, the show raised over £1,600 for the Hospice in Howwood, a charity very close to Jane’s heart. Her dad is currently under their care and the hospice team are helping her family with the many situations a life changing illness brings.

“By donating to enter the show, throwing some money in the buckets and spending some time at the St. Vincent’s volunteer’s stalls, we can help raise funds for this incredible charity. They need to raise nearly £1.5 million every year through voluntary donations and fundraising events to support families like mine. St. Vincent’s aren’t all about end of life, they help people live with difficult conditions. Quite simply, they are incredible and we are so lucky to have them in our locality.”

This year the re-enactment group Swords of Dalriada will be in the Viking Village with Viking traders from Germany, Sweden and Ireland. Come and see how the Vikings lived in our living history 13th Century Viking Village.

Entry fee of £5 Adults, £3 children, students and Concessions (over 60s) with Under 5s FREE gives admission throughout the day of purchase.

The Village opens at 11am every day with last admission at 4.30pm. Please note that the Village closes on the Opening Day, 31st August, from 12.30pm to 1.45pm to enable the Vikings to participate in the Opening Parade and as required to facilitate Viking Skirmishes.

Rehoming Pets Cashew 8+ y/o male JRT Cashew isn’t a little lap dog so we are looking for an owner who will respect this and be hands off. He would prefer his new home to be a quiet environment with children no younger than 16 years old and few stairs due to his age.

He gets on with other dogs and could be left for a few hours at a time. Cashew is not housetrained and will need his new owners to help him work on this. Positive reward based training is essential.

Cashew will need a secure garden, this will make housetraining easier and give him somewhere to potter around.

Icarus male Cockatiel Icarus arrived in our care after he was found as a stray and is now looking for his forever home.

Icarus is a sweet little bird who enjoys the sound of his own voice. He likes to sit on his perch and sing away to the other little birds in his company. He is still very shy of hands and his new owner will need to be very patient with him and help him build up confidence.

Icarus will need a large cage in which he has plenty of space to spread his wings. Once he has built up trust with you, he will also need time outwith his cage to fly around.

Milly 5 y/o female Domestic short-hair Milly is a very independent lady who likes to do her own thing.

She likes to stroll outside often but not for very long so please make sure you have a garden away from a busy road.

She has a lovely deep purr and likes to rub around your legs in the morning, very happy to see you.

She is not a lap cat but on the odd occasion she does like being petted.

She would be happy staying in a home with no other pets and no children.

Puppy Socialisation Socialisation is a term often used when discussing introduction of a new puppy, but what does it actually mean?

Puppies are not born with the social skills that they require to live with their family, be that a dog family or a human one. Socialisation means the learning process that a puppy must undergo in order to learn key life skills to ensure that it is happy and confident in its environment, and can communicate effectively.

Socialising your pup means ensuring they have pleasant social interactions with adults, children, dogs, other animals and of course vets! They should also have careful exposure to different situations in the environment like traffic, crowds, travelling in the car, vacuum cleaners and any sights and sounds they will have to cope with in life.

It is very important that this is done when your puppy is still young enough to happily accept new things. The main socialisation period in pups is from birth up until 16 weeks of age. After the age of 16 weeks pups are more likely to approach new events or experiences with caution or even fear rather than curiosity.

In order to become a good family pet it is also important that you teach your puppy to understand right from wrong.

Everyone in the household should agree to a set of rules which everyone must follow consistently. You should take every opportunity to praise your puppy for good manners and divert it from undesirable behaviour. Attending a good training class can also be very beneficial both for socialisation with new people and dogs and for teaching good manners and basic commands.

Putting in the time and effort with socialisation and training in the first few weeks with your new pup can help him grow into a happy, confident dog.

Animal Rescue Abroad Many Advertizer readers will have been to Ibiza and Greece on holiday. While there, they will have noticed stray cats. Some of them are looked after by local residents, but most of them have an awful existence.

Care 4 Cats Ibiza is one organisation that works hard to help feral cats on Ibiza. The cats are trapped, neutered, vaccinated and put back in a safe place. Vet students and volunteers from ALL walks of life spend their holidays

trapping and neutering. They have no rescue shelter, so they have to go back where they were found, unless a cat friendly location can be discovered somewhere else. Greek Cat Welfare does the same for street cats in Greece. They have no rescue shelter either.

Bridge of Weir Choral Society Our new season begins on Tuesday 3rd September. We meet from 7.30pm - 9.30pm in the small hall of St Columba Church, Kilmacolm. We sing a variety of music from classical to modern and hold a concert at Christmas and in the Spring. Our conductor Christopher Barr also conducts Strathaven Choral Society. This year sees us join forces with Strathaven for our Spring Concert to perform Brahms’ Requiem (sung in German) and Vaughan William’s Five Mystical Songs.

Business thanks locals for support Joyce, Ian and Alan Beaton, who run Beaton Brothers Funeral Directors and the nearby Coal Merchants, would like to thank all the locals who have given their support in objecting to the proposed planning application submitted to Renfrewshire Council by L&S Homes.

The proposal is for the building of 39 three or four bedroom houses on land currently owned by Sustrans, next to Station Road in Bridge of Weir. The border of the plot will reach to Bridge of Weir Road and Moss Road Park.

This area of the village has previously been subjected to proposed housing plans which were refused by the Council following public objections.

The proposed entry road to the development passes directly by the coal yard which is a busy, active business supplying various fuels to a large number of clients in the area. The funeral director business also has direct access onto Station Road, which would become very busy with residential traffic, and opens onto an already difficult junction with Lintwhite Crescent.

Life giving routines I always rather like September. When I was younger this was probably because it is my birthday month, but these days because it’s a month for getting back into routines. Kids back to school, new diary at the ready, a new (and usually short-lived!) sense of order and control. Not unlike January, but with still a lot more light in the day and autumn to look forward to.

I am a routine person – and I know not everyone likes routine. Routines can be dull and too predictable, mind numbing and wearing. We can get into a rut that makes us wonder if we are just running around in a hamster wheel, and going nowhere purposeful. Some routines are bad for us, because we may just continually make the same bad choices or we’re stuck in unhelpful habits regarding diet, exercise, work or relationships.

But good routines can be life giving and life saving. We can all agree of the need for structure and routine when raising kids or having pets. They tend to thrive on positive predictability of getting what they need; sleep, food, learning and play. And as adults it is hugely helpful to have a healthy routine for our own days and weeks: it saves us a lot of stress if we know what is happening and if our routine is balanced and doable.

The Bible in the book of Exodus describes that the Jewish people were told by God to observe a Sabbath, a day of rest each week. This was to apply to everyone, servants and animals included. It structured their week and helped them remember who they were (no longer slaves in Egypt who didn’t get a break ever!). Christians have different views on whether Sabbath keeping is still a requirement for them, but however you look at that, it is good to remember that God invites us into life giving routines.

Regular rest and a time to let go and remember who we are. Time to come off the hamster wheel and remember that our life has purpose.

So as you get back to your September routines I hope that they will be life giving for you!

I think everyone in Bishopton will agree that it is great to have Greenock Road open again and much improved. I am pleased to confirm that further improvements are on the way and following enquiries made by Derek Mackay MSP and myself, a filter light is to be installed at the traffic lights on Greenock Road at the junction with Ferry Road in Bishopton. This is for traffic turning right onto Ferry Road, and will be followed by a dedicated right filter lane in the future. The work will be carried out by BAE and disruption will be kept to a minimum. This has been a problem junction for a while, with vehicles queuing back on Greenock Road behind cars turning onto Ferry Road, so I am pleased BAE have stepped in to help.

September will also see road improvements in Stuart Road, Bishopton, which is due to be closed from Monday the 9th September to Friday the 13th September. A diversionary route will be in place but as always, local and emergency access will be maintained.

Nominations are open for Community Council elections and will remain open until the 13th September. I would encourage anyone in Bishopton, Bridge of Weir or Langbank who is interested in their local area to submit an application and get involved. To be eligible, you must be aged 16 or over, live in the Community Council area and be registered to vote.

Our Community Council’s do a fantastic job and they have an important role to play but it is no secret that volunteers are low in numbers and members are always sought after. This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference to your area. Whether you are interested in fundraising, event management, community engagement, planning or making improvements to the local area, there is something for everyone to get involved in.

This year we have some regular faces stepping down from Bridge of Weir and Bishopton Community Council’s and I just want to say a huge thank you to these members for their years of service and dedication.

In the last year some our Rainbows and Brownies have raised money for charity, made some crazy science experiments and visited a chocolate factory! Guides and Rangers have had adventures and camped in the UK as well as Norway, South Africa, Switzerland, Amsterdam, Iceland, America and Canada! We really are an International Family!

Inverclyde to mark VE Day and May Day in 2020 In what is believed to be the first council in the UK, councillors have agreed that in Inverclyde the May Day holiday will be retained and the Friday will be marked with council offices and facilities closed to allow staff, service users, residents and school pupils to commemorate VE Day 75 in addition to May Day.

75 years ago Kilmacolm Dramatic Society staged their very first production, consisting of three short plays, in Kilmacolm. The Society is proud to boast that they have been providing live entertainment in the Kidston Hall ever since.

Sadly the August barbecue had to be cancelled due to bad weather, but KDS will be holding some special celebrations over the next 12 months. Look out for details in future issues of The Advertizer.

The cast of their November production of The Wizard of Oz start rehearsals on 19th August, initially in the New Community Centre and later in the Kidston Hall, under the direction of Heather Morrison.

The play will be in the Kidston Hall on 21st, 22nd and 23rd November, with a matinee on the Saturday afternoon in addition to the three evening shows.

Following the decision to mark both occasions in May 2020, the council will require to report to its education committee and seek approval from the Scottish Government to change the school year to accommodate an additional day to commemorate VE Day in 2020.

The council also committed to marking the weekend of VE Day 75 by encouraging a range of local organisations and businesses to join the national celebrations led by the Pageantmaster’s office across the UK and the Commonwealth on the weekend of 8-10 May 2020.

What does the Kilmacolm Community Council do?

We are a statutory body that acts as a voice for our community. Public organisations such as Inverclyde Council, Police Scotland and the Health Board consult us over changes they wish to make to the way they provide and run their services.

Kilmacolm Art Class The Kilmacolm Art Class is starting their new session on Thursday 3rd October.

This popular class has been running for over 50 years has a short waiting list but it is always worth putting your name down if you are interested in joining. The class meets in St. Fillan’s Church hall on Thursdays, one group from 10am till 12.30m and the other from 1.30pm till 4pm. We have ten weeks before Christmas and ten after, culminating in our ever popular exhibition in March.

Kilmacolm Village Art Class Our class is getting ready to start up, end of September, for our eleventh year. It’s going to be quite an exciting one, we hope, with our new tutor. For our first 10 years we’ve been delighted to have as our tutor, a well known Kilmacolm resident, Mr David Craig. However times move on and David has decided to take a back seat and enjoy his real retirement. We wish him many happy days, but to come and see us from time to time.

So, there may be some changes afoot! Our new tutor will be made most welcome.

Class meets during Winter/Spring months on Friday mornings in Kilmacolm Village Centre. For the last number of years class has been full, however this year we do have a vacancy, so if you’re interested, please get in touch.

Through practice and tuition, we’ve become quite a talented group tackling a very wide variety of topics. There’s Hazel’s wonderful chickens, birds and ducks, Eileen’s beautiful portraits, Irene’s lovely woodland studies, Alison’s fabulous hellebores, Richie’s sea scenes, Bob’s holiday corners, Lesley’s varied subjects. I could go on. So no matter what your favourite topic, it’s tackled in class, with (most times!) amazing success.

This year during our Autumn session we look forward to a demonstration by a professional artist, while another artist will come and do a workshop with us, in the Spring 2020 session.

Workshops we’ve had in the past have proved great fun.

We end each year, end March, with our mini AGM then our class lunch, always a success.

Villagers have in general been quite complimentary about the communications by SW, less so with the necessary disruption to vital bus services and timetable. McGills Buses laid on a shuttle bus which had to negotiate narrow rural roads. Utility works play havoc throughout the West of Scotland with bus timetables, often occurring with little notice and guilty of over runs. At a succession of Planning Hearings I hear criticism of public transport in the village. I can assure readers that with bus Nos 1, X7, 531 and a Park and Ride at PG Station where there are 4 trains per hour to Glasgow we are better served than most villages that I know.

I have had confirmation from SPT route planners and McGills Board Members that the No 1 Bus from Wateryetts to Woodrow Avenue via Quarry Drive and Finlaystone Road will return with a daytime timetable.

Great news from Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park that Ospreys have fledged chicks. I know that the nest is well protected. There are only 300 breeding pairs in the UK and this news helps to compensate for the lack, now, of nesting Hen Harriers in the Park who have been decimated, mainly by foxes.

The path from West Glen Road to Barrs Brae will be resurfaced by the Council inspite of a lack of clarity of ownership. It is currently unsuitable for a motorised scooter.

Our higher results in Inverclyde have bucked a national trend and have been excellent. PGHS had 5 pupils with 5As and St Stephens 3 similarly, both super performances. I am aware of the contribution from the staff at PGHS and their contribution to supported study and after school classes. I am not a fan of Curriculum for Excellence which in my opinion, has been instrumental in our decline as a nation in international education league tables. There is no doubt that in the past decade Scottish education has gone backward. There is no substitute for knowledge when it comes to exams with literacy and numeracy being the foundation.

The defects period for the drainage works at Birkmyre Park ends on the 14th September. We should insist that all parts are returned to their previous condition including the putting green.

The Carsemeadow, Quarriers, planning appeal was turned down by the Scottish Government Reporter. The Reporter considered that there was a shortfall in housing land supply, the council through our LDP disagrees and defending the green belt around Kilmacolm has not been made any easier.

Currently there is no news on a North Dennistoun appeal. Planetreeyetts public pre- determination hearing, which will be held in the village, has been delayed due to a bat survey.

Kilmacolm Old Kirk OLD KIRK NEWS The last service to be conducted at the Old Kirk by the Rev. Dr. Peter McEnhill will be on Sunday 22nd September. Thereafter he will be moving to St Andrews Church of Scotland in Rome where he will be inducted on Friday 27th September. A small group will go from the church to attend the induction and offer our congregation’s support. We bid him a fond farewell and wish him all the luck in the world at his new charge.

The periods of torrential rain and thunderstorms which were a major feature of the early part of August, have highlighted the state of the drains and gullies in our villages. Parts of Kilbarchan and Howwood that have been particularly affected include Low and High Barholm, and Easwald Bank in Kilbarchan, and the junction of Midton and Bowfield Road in Howwood, where there was also damage to the road. Following pressure on the council, repairs to the road have been undertaken.

Having personally verified that many of the drains in these areas were severely blocked, it is unsurprising that flooding occurred and that we have had such problems. The council has reported a significant increase in the number of drains cleaned, however recent events beg questions in regard to the extent and sufficiency of the work in areas in Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch prone to flooding, and the work of the Rapid Response Team.

It is the view of those affected that the present standard and frequency of cleaning drains and gullies, and the technical efficiency of the cleaning is not sufficient, nor adequate preparation to deal with the kind of weather events encountered this summer. As such and as a priority the council needs to review its current programme.

The problem of hedges and branches overhanging pavements is frequently brought to my attention by pedestrians who in extreme cases are forced to walk on the road. Currently two cases in point are Branscroft Kilbarchan, and Bowfield Road, both of which are busy roads. I have written to the council on the matter and have received an assurance that action will be taken.

I have to thank the many stalwarts that it has been a privilege to work with in the four Community Councils within my Ward. May the good work continue and that we see many new people clambering to be a part of the action.

The weather of the past few weeks caused havoc in Howwood. Blocked gullies in Bowfield Road lead to tarmac and paving blocks being lifted and holes appearing at the junction of Midton Road and Bowfield Road. Not only that but a heavy branch from a tree over shadowing Midton Road broke off and blocked the road. The fallen timber was quickly dealt with by Community Councillors Bill David and Roger Brown. With regard to the road situation, Scottish Water and Renfrewshire Council workers collaborated over a four day period in repairing the damage. The Council have been accused of claiming to having cleared gullies up Bowfield but on inspection by myself and others it is clear this has not been the case! Urgent action is now required to carry out this work before we have another downpour with repeat consequences.

Congratulations are in order for a Johnstone High School pupil after winning the British Rowing Championships. Daniel Shankland from Lochwinnoch was picked to represent his country at international level. Together with his rowing partner, Josephe Barton, the two athletes from Castle Semple and Strathclyde rowing clubs became the British National Junior under 18 pairs champions as they took the 2000 metres title. Lets hope that many others from our locality will follow in their footsteps.

It is always encouraging to hear of residents, who wish for change in their communities, taking the initiative and doing something about it. Such is the case with the formation of the Tenants & Residents Association (TARA) for the Sandyflats area. Kilbarchan Parish Church Tots’ Club Resumes on Monday 2nd September from 9.15am - 11.30am in the hall off Steeple Square. The club is for babies - 3 years of age accompanied by an adult, and is organised by a group of volunteers from the church. Each adult pays £1, children free. There is a large variety of toys and a bouncy castle and of course, refreshments are available.

You will find a large selection of paintings to suit all tastes and prices, in a variety of mediums and sizes. A painting is something unique to give as a special gift, or just to give yourself pleasure for years to come !

As always, we have our tearoom providing delicious, home baked cakes and scones and a welcome cup of tea or coffee. There will also be a tombola with fantastic prizes to be won, and also a raffle for a dramatic painting by Ken Rose which has been valued at £100 by a reputable art organisation.

Gryffe Scottish Dancing Club Summer is almost over and the autumn/winter activities are ready to start up again. At the Kilbarchan Guide Centre, Thursdays from 8pm to 10pm we shall be holding our Scottish Country Dancing evening, starting 19th September.

The object is to have fun whilst enjoying good company, music and exercise.

Whether experienced or a new dancer, all will be most welcome to come along and join in. Tuition is given for beginners, but we don’t go overboard and it is a very relaxed atmosphere.

Leisure Classes in Kilbarchan Guide Centre Leisure classes have started back after the summer break. If you have always wanted to try a FITNESS, YOGA or ART class then you can be assured of a friendly welcome from our members.

On Tuesday mornings Jane leads a TONE AND SHAPE class from 9.30am till 10.30am followed by a slower paced class to improve the balance and flexibility of the more mature mover – from 10.40am till 11.40am Our Thursday morning our HATHA YOGA class with Jacqueline meets from 10am – 11am.

ART CLASSES are held on Monday afternoon and then on both Friday morning and afternoon.

These relaxed and informal classes, for amateurs, are led by Ian Richardson (B.A.Hons) who will provide support and encouragement to help develop skills in your own chosen subject and medium.

Beginners can follow a set 9 week course introducing them to the basics of drawing and painting.

Howwood Park Improvements Howwood Community Council are in discussions with Renfrewshire Council to take over the pavilion in Howwood Park, for use by the community. As part of the transfer, we plan to set up a sub-group: ‘Friends of Howwood Park’

CLIMATE EMERGENCY DECLARATION. As the impacts of Global Climate

change become evermore crucial, LIA is shifting the focus of its donations more towards helping people around the world to prepare for the effects of Global Warming. These are already impacting on many countries and are due to get worse in the coming years. We note that the Scottish Government is among a growing number of organisations that have declared ‘A Climate Change Emergency’.

We have given money to Practical Action to help purchase solar powered water pumps and drip irrigation pipes. This will enable small scale farmers in Zimbabwe to access water without spending hours working a treadle pump; the drip irrigation pipes will ensure crops get sufficient water which will increase the yield. Wednesday 17th July – President Hamid introduced past president Neil McAllister who spoke about his recent experiences as a patient of the NHS

as a result of a heart attack one evening a few weeks ago.

When Neil suffered acute chest pain his wife Margaret called the emergency services. Apart from a worrying delay in the arrival of an ambulance, he received immediate life-saving treatment, first from the ambulance team and then the paramedics and was quickly taken to the RAH Paisley where a heart attack rather than angina was confirmed.

Neil went on to describe the treatment he received in hospital, and after discharge, was fulsome in his praise of the NHS and the staff involved in his recovery.

After many questions Hamid thanked Neil for a most interesting and helpful talk.

Wednesday 31st July - President Hamid called on John King to introduce Jennifer Eadie his grand-daughter!

Jennifer, despite being a Type 1 Diabetic, has had a remarkably successful hockey career, gaining over 50 caps for Scotland and visiting many countries including China and South Africa. She is studying Physiology and Sports Science at Glasgow University.

In the first half of her talk, Jennifer focussed on the history of hockey, going back as far as 1861. It was introduced in the Olympics in 1908 and the Commonwealth Games in 1998. Top countries were currently The Netherlands (Women) and Australia (Men). The pitch is slightly smaller than a football pitch at 100 yards x 60 yards and each match squad totals 18 with 11 players on each side on the pitch at the one time. Great advancements have been made in the astroturf surfaces and in player’s protective equipment in recent years. Also match periods had been revised to 4 x 17.5 minutes.

Jennifer went on to give a detailed and interesting account of her own experiences, after taking up hockey at age 7. She had two PE teachers, who were Olympians and who encouraged her. She joined Clydesdale and Clydesdale Western Hockey Club and at the same time she was also a member of Kilbarchan AAC, until diagnosed with diabetes. Jennifer felt she had to concentrate on her hockey and has subsequently made great progress. She has been capped at U16s, U18s and U21s, gaining her first senior cap in 2014. Jennifer suffered a stress fracture in her foot in 2017, resulting in a layoff of 5 months. Jennifer indicated that a new coach for 2018/19 has helped her greatly, she is involved in GB Development Training and was representing Scotland at the EuroHockey Championships in Glasgow.

Meanwhile, Jennifer has an extremely busy schedule – continuing her degree studies, training, playing, coaching, and umpiring at school.

After a very polished presentation and a few questions ably fielded, President Hamid asked the Members to thank Jennifer in the traditional way & also Grandpa John for bringing her along!

Wednesday 7th August - Hamid Khatib introduced his speaker Robert Ferguson.

Robert, a Paisley Buddy, was educated at Paisley Grammar School between 1959/66. He worked with Diageo but soon became interested in arts and joined the National Trust Scotland where he managed 14 properties including the Weavers Cottage in Kilbarchan.

He became an independent adviser in paintings.

Robert spoke of his work on the National Art collection and also of his work with the Lorimer Society and the need to protect art treasures from leaving the country.

Robert happily answered many questions from the audience and was thanked by President Hamid for his presentation.

Wednesday 14th August – Tom Langley introduced Alison Turnbull, Marion Grieg and Ann Wood from the Houston Bee Happy group. Marion explained that Bee Happy had been set up as a community group to tidy up the village of Houston by planting flowers. The group worked with the support of Renfrewshire Council and Houston Community Council, who provided some financial support and insurance, and had support from local businesses, individuals and Rotary. Membership had grown from an initial group of 6 to 20 current volunteers. They had also received help in kind from volunteers refurbishing and painting seats and goalposts etc.

As the name implies, they aim is to minimise the use of chemicals and encourage the local insect population.

Marion then showed pictures and described the various areas worked on by the group including the Post Office and Houston Inn carparks, the Houston Burn, Community Orchard and wild flower planting. Himalayan Balsam is a problem and they are digging it up before it flowers and leaving it to rot. However they leave Japanese Knot Weed to be eradicated professionally.

After a lively discussion, President Hamid proposed a vote of thanks on behalf of the club.

Houston & Killellan Kirk Doors Open Days “All are Welcome in This Place” We believe that we are always an open and welcoming Church, but we are making a special effort to coincide with Doors Open Days in Renfrewshire on Saturday 7th and Sunday 8th September.

Here is what is planned: Saturday 7th September - 10am – 4pm Guided tours of the Kirk with the beautiful Pulpit Falls on display, accompanied by recorded organ music by the Kirk’s Organist & Choirmaster, Peter McKerrell.

The children will have a challenge to find the Kirk mice & complete the message relayed by them. Biscuits with tea or coffee or juice will be provided.

Community Car Treasure Hunt - From 4pm A fun Car Treasure Hunt open to the whole community to raise money for Solar lamps for school students in Mwandi.

Houston & Killellan Kirk Charity Work On Sunday 14th July, John G. Fleming Bowling Club in Houston hosted their Annual Charity Day and Ladies bowls competition. Thank you to the 64 ladies who took part in the competition, an even bigger thank you to everyone who very generously donated raffle prizes and home baking, and an equally big thank you to all those who purchased raffle tickets and home baking items.

At a 2nd fundraising event on July 27th - a cabaret evening in John G. Fleming Bowling Club in Houston - we managed to raise a further £850 bringing the 2019 total to the magnificent sum of £3,350 - with as usual all proceeds going to the very worthy cause of The St.Vincent’s Hospice.

We are starting a young singers group, for primary and secondary school age, on a Thursday night from 7pm until 8pm with rehearsals in the church.

We know that singing is good for our development socially and our mental health, come along and give it a try. We are delighted that the group will be led by the very talented Laura McKee. The Cameo Club Remember that the first meeting will be held on Wednesday 11th September at 2pm in the West Halls, Main Street, Houston. The Elderberries will be entertaining us on that day. The appeal to support Renfrewshire Foodbank www.renfrewshire.foodbank. org.uk with a tin at a time is being very well responded to, which is not surprising from the generous congregation at Houston & Killellan Kirk.

Every other Monday a large car load is delivered to Paisley. Those who operate the centre say that donations are held for little time in the centre before being passed to those in need and advise that the greatest current needs are for tinned potatoes, tins of meat, tins of fish e.g. tuna or pilchards, tins of fruit, custard, rice pudding, diluting juice, cartons of juice (not chilled), shampoo, bars of soap, toilet paper, shower gel, deodorant, toothpaste and toothbrushes.

The next big Foodbank Appeal at Houston & Killellan Kirk will be Harvest Thanksgiving, which is on Sunday 15th September, and when traditionally the congregation support the Foodbank with a wide range of goods. The Foodbank would be grateful for any of the above, and indeed anything that would be included in a family shop – excepting fresh fruit or vegetables, or other such time-limited perishables.

As well as supporting the Foodbank, posies of flowers and fruit baskets are delivered to the elderly and those in care homes. Any members of the congregation, who would like to gift flowers or fruit, are asked to bring these to the Kirk on Friday 13th September between 6pm and 8pm or Saturday 14th September between 10am and 12noon. Donations to the Harvest Thanksgiving Foodbank may be brought to the Kirk up to the morning of 15th September.

Anyone willing to help decorate the Kirk, preparing posies or delivering those or fruit baskets is asked to let Moira Dunlop know on 331309.

Brookfield News BROOKFIELD GALA DAY - SATURDAY 17th AUGUST Despite the fact that we had already experienced above average rainfall for August before we were even half way through the month, Brookfield surprisingly managed, on the whole, to have a dry, sunny afternoon for its annual Gala Day! The event was once again held in the Village Hall car park which definitely provided better conditions underfoot than would have been the case in the park! However, strong gusts of wind did prove challenging for the gazebos!

The proceedings kicked off with the children’s fancy dress parade along Woodside Road, ably led by four young pipers from St Columba’s School Pipe Band. Gala Day was then officially opened by Innis Keith, Chairperson of Brookfield Village Council.

Entertainment on the stage was provided by the very talented local singer/ songwriter, Sasha Kaloheris and our very own Brookfield Brass Necks.

There was also a dance demonstration from Stewart & Jane Wilson from Ballroom Basics who run the weekly ballroom dancing classes in the Village Hall.

The talented home bakers in the village did us proud providing a wonderful array of tasty treats for both the Tearoom in the Village Hall and the SWI’s Cake & Candy stall.

Our Gala Day could not happen without the efforts of a great many volunteers from the village. We would like to thank everyone who played a part in any way - we acknowledge your input and thank you all for your hard work. Thanks also to all our residents whose generous donations to the various stalls contributed enormously to a successful day.

We would also like to thank local businesses Beaton Bros and Jrs Hairdressers, Bridge of Weir, Butcher’s Steak & Grill, Elderslie and Pets at Home for their kind donations.

Gryffe High School World Challenge Bolivia 2019 – The Expedition

Port Glasgow High School Exam Success at PGHS Pupils and staff in Port Glasgow High School are celebrating significant success in this year’s exam results. Following their best ever results last year, the pupils of PGHS have attained even higher levels of success in the 2019 exam diet.

Wednesday the 12th June was the day a group of 20 Gryffe High School pupils had been waiting for. Accompanied by four teachers and two Expedition Leaders, they split into their two teams and headed for Bolivia for a World Challenge Expedition of a lifetime. Twenty months in planning, it would not disappoint.

The school’s % of pupils achieving 5 Highers is at its highest ever level, increasing from 4% in 2017, to 9% in 2018 to now 17%. A number of pupils achieved straight As in their Higher Awards and some pupils in S5 achieved As in Advanced Higher a year early. Head Teacher Stuart Clark commented on the pupils’ success, saying: “Our whole school community should be incredibly proud of the young people of Port Glasgow High School. They have worked very hard, often coming in for additional study and ensuring they remained focused on success throughout the year. Our teachers are so committed, and really go the extra mile to help each child succeed.”

The school also maintained significant improvement at National 5 level having increased from 16% of S4 pupils attaining 5 National 5s to then 26% and now surpassing the 30% mark. The school was invited to Inverclyde Council HQ to celebrate the positive results and was represented by five girls who achieved straight As in their S5 Highers.

The teams spent three weeks in Bolivia, covering an itinerary that they had planned themselves. This consisted of four main components Acclimatisation, Community Project, Main Trek and finally Rest and Relaxation. Their responsibilities did not end with the planning. Each and every detail on expedition was decided and carried out by the pupils. From the responsibility of Day Leader to the efficiency of the Finance team. It was as the name suggests a challenge, but one that was overcome by working as a team.

The Community project was hugely rewarding. Working alongside the charity Habitat for Humanity, the groups help to build a new home for a local family that was in dire need. Two treks were completed including an acclimatisation trek through the The Yungas (forest terrain) and the main trek through the Andes, eventually attempting the summit of Pico Austria at 5350m. In between times, the group enjoyed the fantastic city of La Paz and visited Salar de Uyuni salt flats.

Overall, this truly was a life changing experience for the pupils. To overcome the various challenges set in front of them with such grit and determination was fantastic to see. Skills were developed, friendships were made but the memories created will certainly last a lifetime.

St Columba’s Exam Results 2019 - bucking national trends, creating solid foundations and aiming high.

This year, St Columba’s again produced an outstanding set of examination results; at Higher, the results were particularly impressive with 26 pupils (42% of the cohort) achieving five A grades and the pass rate was a strong 94.3%. These are our second highest results on record and an increase of over 10% on the last 2 years. We were also delighted that our pupils bucked the national trend where Higher results fell by two percentage points to 74.8%.

Meanwhile, at Advanced Higher, the results were superb with 92.4% pass rate and an outstanding 59.5% A grades (again, the second best we have on record). At National 5, the 97% pass rate was excellent, providing pupils with a solid foundation from which they will progress their studies to Higher level.

Andrea Angus, Rector at St Columba’s School said: “We were absolutely delighted to learn that our pupils delivered such an excellent set of results which reflect a great deal of hard work from many people. They also highlight our open policy towards examination presentations. We encourage pupils to enter subjects they are inspired by. That freedom of choice is a vital part of our School’s ethos and means that the results are a genuine reflection of the work of all involved.”

West Region Scouts in Malaysia

Langbank Playgroup We had great fun last term.

Some of our highlights included our sponsored ‘teddy bears toddle’, supported by our local community police. Everyone had a great day and although it rained, this just added to the fun!

We also enjoyed a summer trip to Finlaystone Country Park, this was a nice opportunity to say goodbye to our boys and girls leaving for school. We wish them all the best of luck with their new adventure.

A group of West Region Scouts have just returned from 16 days in Orang Ali in the Belum Rainforest, Malaysia where they took part in various projects to enhance the lives of the villagers there.

The group of 55 consisting Explorer Scouts and leaders including Explorer Scouts from Houston, Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm travelled for 24hrs to reach their base camp in the Belum rainforest from there they commuted to the Orang Asli village daily along jungle trails.

The group worked in four teams taking turns to build a village swing/play park, clearing waste ground, renovating a school classroom, turning it into bright educational learning area and planting fruit trees, herbs and vegetables for the whole village benefit from. The group where so efficient with the way the worked as a team that they had time to do an extra project and built a table for the head of the local tribe Chief Samad that he can use to hold meetings with the village elders.

Many of the young people in the group donated clothes, books, toys, make-up and other items to villagers which were all gratefully received.

The group had only met previously a hand full of times in preparation but they bonded very well as a team and they threw themselves into the work wholeheartedly.

They and the leaders can be very proud of what they had achieved.

The whole experience was an incredible journey and a chance to move outside their comfort zones.

We are looking forward to another fun packed year at playgroup and welcome any new children. The group runs every Friday morning during term time from 9.45am - 11.45am. We offers lots of fun for pre-schoolers (2.5 - 5 years old) including regular sessions from Mini Morton and the skoobmobile library bus.

Cargill Hall Parent and Toddler Group For nearly 40 years, Cargill Hall Parent and Toddler Group has been providing opportunities for babies and toddlers to learn valuable life and social skills, explore their world and enjoy playing with toys that aren’t their own (toys are always more exciting when they belong to someone else). We have a designated baby corner for our youngest members, although they very quickly want to explore beyond here when they see the fun the bigger kids are having.

Being a parent is the most rewarding thing ever. However, even the best of us need a chance to breathe and have some adult human contact. At Cargill Hall Parent and Toddler Group we think that it’s equally important that parents/ grandparents/carers have a chance to relax with a cup of tea and get to know others at a similar stage. We even have parents coming along before they have their wee ones to get to build up a support network.

School Children learn Money skills from Education Champions How do children learn about money? don’t!

Money skills are not part of the school curriculum but understanding money is an essential life skill like learning to cook or drive. Many young people leave school without really understanding how money works and understandably make bad choices that can cost them dearly.

According to Financial Capability UK “Over 20 million of us can’t manage our money. 11.5 Million have less than £100 in savings and nearly 9 million of us are in serous debt” (https://www.fincap.org.uk/) – so the need for financial education is an urgent issue.

This bleak view is echoed in the 2018 ‘Financial Lives’ survey, which was conducted by the Financial Conduct Authority financial regulator and highlighted the need for financial education at schools, alongside the core personal, social, health and economic (PSHE) subjects. Last year The Personal Finance Society (the professional body for financial planning professionals) launched a nationwide financial education programme in schools and colleges. The ‘Education Champions’ initiative, delivered by volunteer financial professionals, is designed to provide important and complementary financial education for the next generation, and it is hoped that it will ultimately become a key part of the national curriculum. The scheme aims to establish an active link with every secondary school and college of further education in the country.

Houston Primary School St. Vincent’s Hospice Toadstool The winning team of pupils from Primary 6 went for a visit to see their finished toadstool in position at the beautiful community garden at St. Vincent’s Hospice. They were delighted with their achievements, whilst supporting a very good cause.

This initiative provides important financial education for tomorrow’s generation and to help raise the profile of a career as a personal finance professional to rank alongside other professionals such as accountants and solicitors. Education Champions will be a key contact point for schools to provide guidance on financial matters and support teachers more broadly.

Maths Week Pupils will participate in Maths Week Scotland from 30th September - 6th October. This is the third year of this initiative to raise the profile of maths and its importance in all aspects of our lives. There will also be Sumdog online challenges for participating classes.

Houston Toddlers Summer is over and toddlers is back on every Thursday. We are ready to welcome new faces with open arms as some of our older children have moved on to nursery or P1.

We have lots of fun things planned over the next few months with Halloween crafts and a Halloween party on the horizon. Please come along to our friendly group for a chat, a cuppa and of course a play.

We have also changed from using disposable cups for tea/coffee and we are now asking for you to bring a reusable cup for tea/coffee and toddler drink. This is cutting down on washing up and of course more importantly waste.

We welcome all children age between 0 - 4 years old, together with their parents, grandparents or carers to join in with the games, crafts and play on offer every Thursday. The children can enjoy playing, making friends and of course snack time while the adults can catch up with a cuppa.

CMPR Bog Stop - Runners leave the start line at Greenock Cut Visitor Centre

Kilmacolm Golf Club Ladies Our Greenlees Team have been playing well and they won there final match against Ayr Bellisle 51/2 - 31/2 in some very wet conditions. Well played Ladies and huge thanks to Marion Stewart for organising everything so well.

Kilmacolm Ladies section once again participated in the West Renfrewshire Evening League. This allows lady members who prefer to play in the evenings a chance of participating in the exciting format of team golf, each fixture consisting of 6 individual matches played with full handicap allowance.

KGC were promoted to the Second Division last year and this season played 3 fixtures, our first narrowly losing to Gleddoch away on a sunny May evening, a fortnight later we beat Gourock at Kilmacolm on another gloriously sunny evening. Our final match was on 7th June at Paisley in slightly damper conditions, where we lost overall but with four of the six games finishing on the 18!! We are waiting to hear whether we have managed to avoid relegation, it will be down to the number of points won, nail biting stuff!

Our Bronze Friendly matches have been fun and played over the Summer months. They have had a most enjoyable season and thanks to those who participated. They won 3 matches ,lost 1 and drew 1 and the weather was mainly kind to us. Many thanks to Ann Tanner for all her organising skills.

Junior Day Another fantastic Junior’s Day was held on 1st August with over 40 youngsters ranging from 7 - 17 years taking part in a variety of competitions and we were very lucky with sunshine throughout before the rain arrived. Whether they played 2 holes, 5, 7, 10 or 18 they all enjoyed great company and had good fun. Some very impressive talent was on show, especially on the putting green!

Whilst there were lots of prize winners, congratulations go to Harry Kellock who shot an excellent score of a net 67 to win the Centenary Trophy for the third time in a row with Alexander Farmer hot on his heels!!

Wonderful to see the future of the club enjoying themselves on the course well played all. A huge thank you to our Vice Captain Jackie Sayers and her many helpers for making the day such a success.

Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club The annual Ladies Day event took place on 1st June. A total of 102 players took part in what was a fantastic, funfilled day, helped by the fair weather conditions. The phenomenal amount of £2,445 was raised on the day from both raffle ticket sales and the charity auction. Thank you to all who participated and donated. All funds are to be given to MND Scotland and RNLI, the chosen charities for this year.

the Ladies Section annual Lady Captain’s outing destined for Helensburgh this year, had to be cancelled. However the ladies were not to be prevented from having a fun-filled day and held the alternative Solheim Cup in the Clubhouse instead. The morning Trivial Pursuit & beetle drive were followed by the putting competition (with exploding balls!) and a quiz testing general knowledge as well as Golf rules. Congratulations to Team USA who enjoyed a narrow victory over Team Europe. Thanks to the catering and bar staff who provided a hearty meal & refreshments at short notice.

Another hugely busy and exciting month at Old Ranfurly. We saw the Junior Open taking place with over 40 competitors from 5 different clubs. A fantastic show of the future talent that golf has to offer. Adam McNaughton from Gourock won the handicap competition whilst Johnny Greig from Old Ran won the scratch prize.

The competition winners were mother & son partnership, Frances and Grant Miller, with Charmaine Morton and David Haggerty taking 2nd place & Jenny Scott and Hugh Booth coming 3rd. Congratulations to all.

Leap of Faith On 22nd June, Lady Captain Jen Owen, Danny McGarvey, Paula Adam and Andy Watson took a Leap of Faith from the Finnieston Crane over the River Clyde. The impressive amount of £2,514.81, raised through sponsorship of the team, is going to MND Scotland.

Thanks go to all club members, friends and family for their tremendous support in helping the team successfully achieve their goal.

On Saturday 10th August the club hosted the Championship Finals Day. A huge crowd of supporters – members and guests turned out to cheer on the finalist in great weather – which wasn’t forecast!

Ladies Introduction to Golf The very popular ladies “Introduction to Golf” classes, started again on Wednesday 21st August from 6.30pm to 7.30pm, running for 5 weeks.

The Satterford Trophy was won by Mairi Milne (4 in a row!).

In the Jubilee Trophy, Adam Bogle and Andrew Fogarty were triumphant, with David & Hazel Kirkland winning the mixed doubles event.

The ladies Bronze Shield was won by Susan McFall on the 4th extra hole – an exhausting, but fantastic win.

The course was in spectacular condition despite the horrendous weather experienced recently – well done to all involved in the organisation of the event.

CMRP Bog Stomp for Erskine The Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park Bog Stomp 2019 is now nearly upon us, however there is still time to sign up and do a little training. The event is a 10k(ish) off road trail run which leaves the Greenock Cut Visitor Centre at 10am on Sunday 1st September.

Entry is only £20 and includes a finishers’ medal, an event buff and a £5 donation to our chosen charity Erskine. We also have a charity entry rate where if you raise a minimum sponsorship of £50 for Erskine you can enter at £10.

Contact fundraising@erskine.org.uk for the exclusive entry promo code and they can also provide information and ideas on how to collect sponsorship money.

The route covers a mixture of terrain in the hills of Inverclyde, affording beautiful views down the River Clyde. The initial ascent is steep, climbing Dunrod Hill, it then gently undulates across tufted and grassy moorland with the odd trail and reservoir track until the home stretch which follows a gravelly and tarmac track alongside the Compensation Reservoir back to the Visitor Centre.

All games were played in challenging weather conditions, although the threatened thunder storms did not arrive, and in very good spirit.

The course is in excellent condition and both Captains, Graham Barr and Margaret Adams commented on the high standard of golf played.

Roisin retained her Championship Trophy this year, and played some lovely golf shots to beat first time finalist Trixie Brown.

The course was in beautiful condition and the spectators today watched the match during sunshine and showers.After a good start from Trixie, Roisin edged forward and with some fine driving and approach shots, she won the match to retain the Championship Trophy.

Change is Good From the moment we are born, our bodies begin to change, and these changes continue throughout life. Whilst changing is inevitable, how and when we ‘age’ is highly influenced by our lifestyle, and much of what we call ‘aging’ can very much be an accumulation of lifestyle habits.

The Scottish Youth U18 Fly Fishing team finished second in the 2019 Home International which was held on the 31st July at Lake of Menteith. The 14 strong team were competing against their counterparts from England, Ireland and Wales in the annual even which dates back to 1986.

Scotland had won the event for the last 3 years and it was their turn to host. The boys and girls, aged from 13 - 17 set off at 9.45am and returned to the boathouse at 5pm for the count & weigh in. All fishing took place on boats on the 800 acre water with each angler drawn against a competitor from another country. The winners being decided on total weigh of fish caught. Local interest came in the form of David Cruickshank (15) who lives in Lochwinnoch and attends St. Columba’s school in Kilmacolm. David was winning his 2nd International cap and landed fish weighing nearly 10lbs.

At the final count, Ireland won the Gold medals weighing in an impressive total of 177lbs & 2.6oz. Scotland were second on 152lbs, 7.2oz, Wales 3rd on 123lbs, 15.5oz and England were narrowly 4th on 121lbs, 13.3 oz. Top basket went to Chris Fehilly from Ireland with 31lbs, 7.8oz and top Scottish Rod was Captain Greg Picken with 24lbs, 10.8oz. Heaviest fish went to Ireland’s Connor Mooney at 4lbs, 3.1oz narrowly ahead of Scotland’s Brad Gair with 4lbs, 2.6oz.

Scottish qualification for the event in Ireland next year will take place during August & September at Lake of Menteith and Carron Valley. Entry is open to boys and girls aged 13 - 17 and an entry form can be found and be found on the home page of the Scottish Anglers National Association website:http://www.sana.org.uk/ Thanks go out to all the anglers, coaches, parents and sponsors who make the event possible each year.

Common changes in older age include: Energy and bone strength – can be weakened due to sedentary lifestyle, hormonal changes and nutrient deficiencies.

Metabolism – can have a reduced appetite, nutrient absorption and blood sugar control.

Mobility – Loss of strength, muscle mass and flexibility due to reduced activity.

Hormones – changes in mood, energy and body composition due to decreased oestrogen and progesterone in women and reduced testosterone in men.

As much as some of these are inevitable there are some simple habits that can help you live a healthier, more enjoyable and fitter life for longer.

1. Keep Moving! Exercise is one of the most impactful things we can do for our health. It not only improves fitness, strength, flexibility and mobility but it can improve mood and well-being as well as keeping you sociable.

2. Eat Healthy Meals! All nutrients are important but as we age 2 become slightly more important. Protein – this helps to preserve valuable lean tissue (muscle and bone). Antioxidants – these are like the body’s defence team, the more you consume the more nutrients you are getting - so keep eating your fruit and veg!

3. Moderate Alcohol! – Research on alcohol consumption is mixed. The body can’t store alcohol, so it prioritises clearing it out. As the liver metabolises alcohol it may delay or neglect other tasks – such as digesting and absorbing other nutrients! As we age, continuing to absorb things like proteins, fats, carbs, vitamins and minerals is essential. So, give your body the best chance to do so.

The earlier you start implementing these simple habits as much as you can in your life the better. They can make a difference to you even regardless of your age.

Ranfurly Castle Golf Club Tom Eckford Testimonial Pro-Am The club were proud to host the Tom Eckford Testimonial Pro-Am on Friday 28th June; the event was the showpiece of Toms’ Testimonial year and was well supported – certainly, there could be no complaints about the weather or the condition of the golf course. Both were exceptional and as ever, huge thanks must go to Craig and the greenstaff for all their efforts.

The scoring was good on the day – a special mention must go to Ranfurly Castles Claire Provan who scored a Hole in One on the 14th hole! Well done Claire on such a brilliant achievement!

Earle Donaghy, Alastair Howe and Brian Glover recorded the best team score alongside PGA Professional Chris McQueen from Trump Turnberry. Many congratulations to all the prize winners and thanks to all who took part.

Thanks are also due to the Testimonial Committee, Stewart Catering and various sponsors/supporters for making the day such a success.

Congratulations to our ladies at Kilmacolm Bowling Club who won the Greenock & District Ladies League this year.

We also express our gratitude to our sponsors, Sole Solution Podiatry Clinic, Kilmacolm and abc Taxis, for supporting the purchase of our new club shirts.

Three of our teams reached the Scottish District finals with 2 teams winning and going on to represent the club in the National Scottish Finals in Ayr. We have also held the Edith Crawford & Kate Nairn club competitions both followed by Strawberry cream teas.

Our Ladies Open Invitation triples day will be held on Sunday 18th August, this is always well supported by local teams and a most enjoyable day.

August is a busy month with club finals, and Greenock & District finals being played, before the season ends at the beginning of October.

During July and early August the Club has been holding family/ social Saturday Sailing days.

These initiatives have been well supported. They have enabled people who may not be regular sailors to come along and enjoy the experience of being out on the water but without the pressure of our normal racing events.

We will most likely be running more days like this and open days for the public. Check our website for upcoming events.

Squash Success For Strathgryffe Junior The 2018/19 squash season proved to be a very good one for Gryffe High School student John Meehan of Strathgryffe Tennis, Squash & Fitness Club.

The season stated with John competing in the U17 age group where he achieved a 3rd place finish in the Welsh Open and followed this up by winning the Nordic Junior Open in Malmo.

John’s final tournament as a 16 year old saw him finish 7th in the British Junior Open.

Turning 17 in December and moving into the U19 age group, John achieved a 9th place finish in the Scottish junior Open and then won the National U19 title.

Community Empowerment Fund At the time of going to press, four community groups in Renfrewshire have discovered they have been awarded a share of over £45,000 in the next wave of funding from Renfrewshire Council’s Community Empowerment Fund.

The STAR Project - an award winning community support organisation has been awarded £20,000 to create a new labyrinth in Fountains Gardens, Paisley. A community asset transfer for the labyrinth site is currently underway.

Paisley Opera will recieve £6,700 to carry out a community consultation and develop a business plan to create a rehearsal space and Community Hub in the East End of Paisley.

The 18th Paisley & District (Coats) Scout Group have been awarded £10,000 to carry out a feasibility study to find a suitable location for a new purpose-built Scout group and community facility in Foxbar.

Foxbar Community Garden & Environmental Projects Group has also been successful in their bid for £10,000 to support the development of a business plan to create a community garden and local hub facilities on the site of the demolished St Paul’s Primary in Foxbar.

Councillor Marie McGurk, convener of the Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: “Renfrewshire is a thriving place, full of creative, passionate and innovative people and these projects showcase that.

The £1.5million Community Empowerment Fund provides grants to community groups that want to take over ownership and the running of a publicly owned building or piece of land in their local area through Community Asset Transfer.

Nationalisation of Ferguson Marine Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, said: “We fully welcome the news that the workers at Ferguson Marine will have some job security. We also fully welcome the commitment from the Scottish Government to deliver on the existing ferry contracts.

“Questions will rightly be asked about how it came to this after the successful outcome from the task force in 2014 when Clyde Blowers became the preferred bidder for the Ferguson yard. The yard then and now has enormous potential. That potential has only partly been realised to date.”

“The highly skilled and experienced workforce, as well as the yard itself, should be viewed as a national asset. The Scottish Government has our support over bringing the yard under public control if it is committed to ensuring the continued success of the business not just in an Inverclyde context or to deliver the current ferry contracts but as a long term part of our country’s industrial and marine strategies.”

Avoiding the Taper Trap – and a 60% income tax charge

by Carl Melvin, Affluent Financial Planning Ltd The additional rate of income tax in Scotland is 46% for individuals earning more than £150,000 per year. However, there is a category of taxpayer who earns less but pays proportionately more than the super high earners.

Some people pay an effective rate of income tax of up to, and over, 60% on part of their earnings. It could be you.

This tax trap revolves around what is known as the “taper trap”. This is where your income exceeds an income threshold that results in you losing certain entitlements. The net result is that you pay more tax.

Two categories of taxpayer fall into the taper trap; Higher earners claiming child benefit Individuals earning over £100,000 per year Example 1 – Child Benefit claimant For couples where one partner earns over £50,000 p.a., a high-income child benefit tax charge of 1% applies for every £100 of child benefit awarded.

A family with two children where one partner earns £50,000, would be awarded child benefit of £1,788 per year. But, should the higher earner receive a pay rise of £1,000, the 1% tax charge on the child benefit would amount to £178. Income tax of £410 (in Scotland) would also be payable.

The tax of £588 on the £1,000 pay increase is equivalent to a 58.8% tax charge.

Example 2 – Earnings over £100,000 per year Those who have an adjusted net income of over £100,000 p.a. Start to lose the tax-free personal allowance of £12,500 ( tax year 2019/20). For every £2 of earnings above £100,000 they lose £1 of tax-free personal allowance meaning that someone who earns £125,000 p.a. has no personal allowance left.

Let us assume you have earnings of £100,000 and you are ‘lucky’ enough to get a £1,000 p.a. pay rise. As above, income tax at 41% will apply, costing you £410, but you will also lose £500 of your personal allowance.

This means that the £500 personal allowance that was tax free before is now taxable at 41%, which equates to £205. The total tax due of £615 on your £1,000 pay rise is an equivalent income tax rate of 61.5%.

Can this be reduced?

International exchanges between schools International exchanges between schools to be supported thanks to new fund. A new £30,000 fund has been established to support cultural exchanges for schools and pupils.

The Provost’s School Exchange Fund will offer the opportunity for schools in Renfrewshire to apply for a grant of up to £10,000 for an international exchange visit to schools in either of Renfrewshire Council’s twin towns of Gladsaxe in Denmark or Furth in Germany.

Renfrewshire Speakers Club Yes, you can speak in front of others!

International visits have already taken place to Renfrewshire and school pupils from Skovbrynet School in Gladsaxe visited Renfrew High School last month on a film-making visit.

Renfrewshire Speakers Club, a mixed, independent club based in Johnstone Town Hall, is the perfect way to learn how to speak in front of others and to gain the confidence to speak effectively. Whether a social occasion, a business presentation or an interview, the skills and experience you will gain will be of immense benefit to you.

Exchange trips will expose pupils to new cultures and languages, and pupils will improve their international awareness. As well as forming friendships, the exchanges contribute towards acceptance and understanding of different cultural traditions.

Today, as never before, the ability to stand up and speak with confidence is a skill which those who wish to progress and develop will need to acquire and we teach and practise these skills in a friendly and supportive manner in our independent, mixed gender speakers club.

Compensation Claims: Accidents on Private or Public Land A. Accidents on private property The “occupier” of private land has a statutory legal duty to take reasonable care to prevent persons entering onto their premises being injured by hazards due to the state of the premises/buildings. What “reasonable care” requires of the occupier depends on the precise circumstances.

The legal “occupier” is the person in sufficient day-to-day control of the premises to be in a position to make and keep the property and buildings on it safe. This can be the owner, tenant or even a contractor on a site.

B. Accidents on public roads/footpaths/pavements If adopted for maintenance, they are under the control of the local authority (Scottish Government for trunk roads). The authority has a duty to maintain them, using an inspection system, with hazards recorded being repaired promptly.

Local authorities can however effectively choose how regularly (or otherwise) they inspect each road/footpath/pavement. Most council systems will categorise the importance of each road or pavement: the highest-rated inspected more often than the less important.

2) Was the defect reported to the council by the public before the accident?

3) If not, did the council fail to follow its inspection system regarding the accident locus and thus fail to know of the hazard (assuming it existed at the time of the inspection)?

4) Alternatively, did the council carry out the required inspection before the accident, but fail to notice and repair the hazard (assuming it existed when the inspection was done)?

Craig Hepburn Memorial Garden The Craig Hepburn Memorial Garden and Outdoor Learning Centre is located in Linwood High School.

Our original garden with an outdoor classroom has been expanded to include community raised beds, an orchard, greenhouse and presentation area. We work with all years in the school reconnecting them to the natural world whether it is through growing in our organic garden, encouraging biodiversity or learning about sustainability.

Kilbarchan Smile volunteers have adopted, planted and maintain several neglected patches of ground around the village and, if you haven’t discovered them all yet, here is a guide to help you, so that you can visit them and enjoy the plants. Come along to our Bat Night on Friday 27th September (7pm – late) to discover more about these creatures. If the weather is dry, we will head outside onto the reserve with some bat detectors.

There is so much to see and do for all you nature lovers, so why not come and join us as for our Doors Open Day weekend on Saturday 7th & Sunday 8th September (10am - 4pm) where we will be looking at everything we have on the reserve, plant and animal alike.

140th KHS Anniversary Flower Show

At the time of writing, August will be one of the wettest months ever.

To aid recovery after a heavy shower, gently shake water off flowers and ease stems off the ground. Dead head herbaceous plants as quickly as possible to give new flowers a chance to develop.

Sprinkle fertiliser, such as blood, bone and fishmeal round the roots of spring flowering shrubs, such as rhododendrons. Camellias are also thinking about next year’s buds so give these a fortnightly feed with Liquid Seaweed until end-November.

The Cargill Centre Kilmacolm on Saturday 7th September Doors open at 11.30am, admission is free to members, £2 entry for non-members. Or join the Society for a small subscription of £5 to enjoy all the benefits of the range of activities that the K.H.S. offers through the year.

Kilbarchan Smile Open Garden Day Everyone braved the weather to attend Kilbarchan Smile’s Gateway Community Garden Annual Open Day. They had the opportunity to meet Badger the dog with his latest children’s books, pick up some plants, lunch on delicious freshly baked pizzas, enjoy afternoon tea with home baking and to shop for Fairtrade goods, in addition to learning about the hedgehogs brought along from Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue Centre.

With wet and windy weather, keep an eye on ripening fruits and, if branches are straining under the weight, support these and tie with string to a branch or the trunk above. Similarly, ripening tomatoes may need to be supported. Most leaves can now be removed to allow the air to circulate and the sun to get through!

Gardeners have noted lots of butterflies, e.g., Tortoiseshells, Peacocks and Red Admirals fluttering around their nectar-rich plants. Painted Ladies have been a welcome arrival too. Buddleias will attract butterflies and insects. For smaller gardens, plant Allium Sphaerocephalum. These are tall, thin-stalked bulbs with round purple, plum-sized flowers and they buzz with insect interest.

How is your pumpkin faring in this strange summer? Lots of yellow flowers will have opened by now and hopefully a few are developing into little round pumpkins. They like lots of water and being fed regularly. They also prefer constant warmth so, if possible, cover when the temperatures drop or heavy rain is forecast.

Things to do in the Vegetable Garden:- Bend over onion tops during the drying off prior to harvesting and take the chance of any dry days to harvest. Remove old flowers from courgettes, pumpkins and marrows to prevent rot setting in, particularly during wet weather.

Keep picking crops such as beans and peas to ensure continuity of cropping.

Welcome to Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park The Ranger teams have been busy with summer events including bee talks and walks, bird and bat box making and bushcraft.

West of Scotland walling association have been up at Muirshiel repairing a wall up the Fank Road - this will be an ongoing project.

Branching Out is a new course brought by the Murshiel Rangers in conjunction with mental health charity RAMH. Workshops in photography and bushcraft have already taken place with more planned.

We have been dodging showers throughout the summer to record the bumblebees and butterflies on the transects. We have seen many painted ladies, ringlets and one common blue.

The volunteer groups in the park have been busy helping us with various projects. At the Greenock Cut they have repaired the drystone dyke by Shielhill Farm, taken part in the Big Butterfly Count, done a Beach Clean at Lunderston Bay and continued putting on anti slip treads onto the boardwalk.

At Castle Semple they have cut back vegetation on the SRANI path, removed Himalayan balsam in the Johnshill field and repaired the bridge at Downies in Parkhill wood.

Both groups have kitted themselves out with logoed clothing so say hello if you see them out and about.

The Rangers will be scything the Johnshill Meadow in late September so please pick up after your dog and put it in the new litter bin in the car park.

Finally we say a fond farewell at the end of September to four long serving members of staff - Senior Ranger Judy McCready, Visitor Centre assistant Brian Irwin, Admin Staff Caroline Lockhart & Karen Fraser. Enjoy your retirement.

Osprey’s at Clyde Muirshiel The Rangers at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park are happy to announce that their resident Osprey pair have reared and fledged chicks for a second year in a row. The pair arrived back to their nest in April and after a few running repairs they were soon incubating eggs. The chicks hatched towards the end of May and the team got their first glimpse of the chicks through the telescope a few weeks later and were pleased to see not one, or two but three wee heads above the rim of the nest!

Ospreys are rarer in the UK than Golden Eagles and with an adult wingspan of between 5 - 6ft – they are also considered giants of the sky. It is wonderful to see such successful breeding in local areas. At approximately five weeks old the chicks looked fantastic and were the picture of health thanks to their parent’s hard work.

Ospreys survive solely on a diet of fish and during nesting it is only the males who hunt. They can dive for fish from heights of 100m. The chicks sat quietly as their measurements were taken and their identification rings were fitted. Names were given – Misty, Izzy and brother Otis.

Unfortunately a second breeding pair were disturbed by over-keen members of the public earlier in the summer and left the area, so it is worth remembering that if a bird flies from the nest, you are too close to it. They have the highest level of protection in the UK and it is an offense to injure or disturb any bird, nest or egg.

The Rangers have reported that the chicks are now flying, so it won’t be long before they head off for their first migration – an approximate 5,000 mile journey to Africa. How they navigate, and how young birds manage to make the journey on their own at a young age is still a mystery. The males often return to the same area in their second year so it is hoped that we will see Otis again. We wish all three bon, voyage!

Bridge of Weir Hill Walkers A band of eight BowHWers were in Saas Fee in Switzerland at the end of July till 7th August.

We managed nine walks in ten days and our treks included snow fields, glaciers, boulder fields and high Alpine trails at between 8,500 and 11,500 feet. Saas fee is a very high village and is surrounded by snow clad giants many of which are over the magic figure for the Alps of 4000+ metres.

At a social evening Stewart got a shot of the musician’s accordion and we treated the other guests to a Scottish sing song. Then came the dancing.

We have always been known as rent-a-party!

Each evening we assembled at the very exclusive Club 56 where drinks and music were the fare.

We also made a side trip to have a walk below the mighty Matterhorn at Zermatt.

September will see us in the Ochils, Tighnabruaich and Lochgilphead.

Some warmth, sunshine and rain is all it takes to keep plants happy, and we have had a fair amount of all three, with the result that our floral displays have come away beautifully. Choosing the best plants for summer is always a bit of a gamble, but over the years we have found that begonias and even pelargoniums stand up well to all weathers, even heavy rain, provided it stops from time to time. Wet weather is, of course, a mixed blessing: our maintenance teams don’t have to be out watering as often, but on the other hand plants put on a lot of growth and weeds grow profusely. Fortunately we had a great team of volunteers tidying up last month, as you can see.
