This month

It’s the time of year when the plants and flowers are brilliantly bright. It’s a wonderful sight when everything is fresh and new. We are very lucky to have a group in each village who take exceptional pride in keeping our flowerbeds and planters looking beautiful. They are out in all sorts of weather so that we can enjoy the display of flowers around the villages.

So imagine my anger when I saw, not for the first time, that someone has decided to help themselves to one of these lovely plants! Brighter Bridge of Weir made an appeal on facebook following the theft of a Forest Flame Pieris plant (like the one pictured) from the flowerbed beside the Prieston Road junction. The garden groups have suffered vandalism and theft from time to time over the years and I can’t believe that there is anyone in our vicinity who can possibly think this is acceptable.

These groups rely on donations of funds, plants and equipment to carry out their wonderful work. There is no ‘cooncil’ funding for this. So whoever pinched the plant, I hope you’re pleased with the new addition to your garden..... hmmm.

With good weather comes busy gardeners. However, gardeners beware. It’s still nesting season and some chicks and young birds haven’t left home yet.

Please be wary when pruning and trimming hedges, trees and large shrubs.

Have a quick look in the branches before beginning just in case there’s a nest there. Nesting season is nearing an end for most local bird species, so a short delay in the gardening schedule is all that’s needed.

It’s your last chance to make a comment on the Renfrewshire Local Development Plan. The deadline for comments is 5pm on Monday 10th June 2019. There is more detail on p7. The Plan affects the entire council area and outlines the Council’s policy on housing and preferred sites to meet the apparent housing shortfall over the next 10 years.

Anyone wanting more information on the proposals can access the plans via Renfrewshire Council’s web site at www.renfrewshire.gov.uk. In the search box, enter ‘Proposed Local Development Plan 2019’. This will take you to the plan and associated background papers and maps, as well as the consultation response form.

There is an application to amend the planning for the former Bull’s Garage site. This replaces the previous application for retail units, making more retirement accommodation available instead. You can view the details on the Renfrewshire Council planning website under application number 19/0112/PP. On Monday 13 May, 2019, Renfrewshire Council launched its “Our Renfrewshire” Community Survey. The survey is designed to start a conversation about the values that are most important to local people and the values and behaviours that you expect from your Council. History of Houston and Crosslee

CarFest Returns to Paisley

John Anderson, a former teacher, community worker, tourist guide, noted local historian and author of the recently published book “Old Houston and Crosslee” was the speaker at Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley on 17th April.

The cars will be on show at locations including The Cenotaph, High Street, County Square and Gilmour Street from 10 am until 4 pm on Saturday 15th June.

He delivered a very interesting account of the history of the two villages.

John explained how the name Houston was derived from Hugh’s Town, how there were strong connections with Houston, Texas which took its name from General Sam Houston. He reminded members that Sir William Arrol (famous for the Forth Bridge and Tower Bridge) was born in Houston in 1839; that Rev John Harper, who went down on the Titanic on his way to a church in Illinois, was born in Houston in 1872.

Houston was a noted weaving village in the late 18th Century – producing embroidery for Queen Victoria and the House of Lords.

St. Vincent’s Hospice is bringing its hugely popular CarFest to Paisley again this summer. There will be classic, vintage and specialist custom cars on show, as well as muscle cars, supercars and emergency vehicles, not to mention motorbikes and Remote Control cars!

As well as treats for motor enthusiasts, there will be plenty of family-friendly fun with fairground rides, children’s entertainment, live music, stalls, tombola and a prize raffle…

This is the sixth year of St. Vincent’s CarFest and its third visit to the town centre with all funds raised on the day supporting St. Vincent’s Hospice in Howwood.

Kate Lennon, Chief Executive of St. Vincent’s Hospice, said: “CarFest is one of the absolute highlights of our calendar, and we are always absolutely blown away by the amount of work and passion that people put in to making it happen.

The event is organised by MaxSafe and sponsored by Paisley First.

The Haven Open Day The Haven at Kilmacolm will be hosting an Open Day from 11am to 3pm, on Saturday 8th June 2019 at Horsecraigs, Kilmacolm PA13 4TH. Admission is free!

Euroscola Project - Shaun at Strasbourg Shaun Sweeney, a sixth-year student at Gryffe High School, attended the 24th April meeting of Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley to give a report on his visit to Strasbourg at the end of January as part of the Euroscola Project. He had been selected by a three-man panel from the Youth Service Committee after submitting a CV and an essay on Europe and attending an interview.

Along with 23 other students sponsored by Rotary Clubs from across Scotland he participated in a variety of activities, including a treasure hunt and street survey, which involved interaction with the people of Strasbourg, all conducted in French.

The highlight of the week was a visit to the European Parliament where Shaun was asked to introduce the group to the officials and 650 other students from all over Europe. This was followed by various committees, debates and feedback covering a wide range of topics.

Shaun ended his presentation by thanking the School and the Rotary Club for giving him an “amazing opportunity” and “a once in a lifetime experience”.

Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley The Power of Coal At our Speaker Meetings, held at the River Inn, each member takes responsibility for finding a speaker one night a year or chooses to fill the slot themselves.

In recent weeks, the club had the pleasure of hearing Ian Beaton and his son William on “Facts about Coal”.

After Ian had explained the history of the Bridge of Weir Coal Yard which has been taken over by Beaton Bros, William, by far the youngest speaker ever at the club, gave a very polished presentation, with excellent Powerpoint slides he had prepared himself, on the properties and use of coal .

by Kerry Taher, New Vision Opticians Some of you will be shuddering at the very thought of putting something on your eye. Believe it or not though, as long as your eyes are suitable and you can handle/take care of the contact lenses properly, anyone can wear contact lenses (CLs).

The choice of CLs is now greater than ever. Lots of different materials and huge ranges of prescriptions mean that everyone has an option, even varifocal wearers. From the part-time wearers (once or twice a year) to the full-time wearers (1 month without removing the CLs) and everything inbetween, there are CLs for you.

The average age to start CLs is 12-15 years of age but fitting a child of 7 is not out of the question. As long as there is understanding of risks/hygiene and competence in handling then there is no minimum (or maximum!) age.

CLs can even have a positive impact on a child’s social behaviour, helping them to feel more confident.

Probably the best question to ask yourself is “are there any occasions where I wish I didn’t need glasses to see?” This can be anything from glasses feeling uncomfortable, steaming up, sports, vanity etc. If the answer is yes, then you should give them a try.

Most opticians offer free trials which involve an initial assessment and fitting based on a current eye examination, so just ask. You will then be taught all you need to know to safely handle and care for your CLs before the 1-2 week trial begins. After this, you have a check-up and this is when you decide if you wish to continue wearing CLs. All being well, different wearing schedules can then be discussed.

Rotary Charity Car Wash - 13th April The Rotary Club of Gryffe Valley charity car wash held at Beaton Bros. was a great success and example of Rotary in Action! More than a hundred cars were washed and £800 raised for the charity account.

Renfrewshire’s Slave Legacy: The Cunninghams of Craigends For several centuries the Cunninghams were among the top landowners in Renfrewshire. Their core estate was at Craigends, and they had further property in Kilbarchan village. The Cunninghams also owned many other lands in the parish. These included along the Black Cart (around Over Johnstone), along the Locher (Kaimhill, Clippens and Windyhill) and, also, up the Gryfe to Bridge of Weir, Thriplee, and Craigends Denniston, then across into Erskine parish. All of these lands were managed and improved with slave money. Along with the Millikens’ coat of arms the Cunninghams’ coat of arms graced Kilbarchan parish church.

The Cunningham’s neighbour, James Milliken, returned from the Caribbean in 1729. Two years later, Cunningham acquired the 3,500 acre Grandville plantation in Westmoreland, Jamaica, and used it to fund improvements at home. When the 11th heir, Alexander Cunningham inherited Grandville in the 1780s from his father, he also used the income to improve his lands. He abandoned his old garden and built a new three acre walled garden, with orchard, hotwall, and melon and peach houses.

The Cunninghams were not ‘absent’ landlords who managed their slaves from the Scottish side of the Atlantic. Like fellow landowners such as the McDowalls and Millikens, they preferred to have a family member in control.

William, the second son of the 8th laird, (b.1693) went to Jamaica in the 1730s. Others followed, right through to the 12th Laird, William, (b.1757) who lived and died on Jamaica. His brother John, the next heir, has a large epitaph inside Kilbarchan old kirk. This remembers John as ‘kind, candid, sincere and firm, walking humbly with his God’. There is a deep conflict between the church connections of Renfrewshire’s landed elite and their ownership of Africans.

William Cargill 1883 - 1962 William Cargill, who died in March 1962 at the age of 79, was a member of a wealthy Glasgow shipping family. He lived in Carruth House just off the Kilmacolm Lochwinnoch Road.

William was the son of David Syme Cargill, a founder member of the Burma Oil Company and the half brother of Sir John Cargill one time Chairman of the Company. He was educated at Glasgow Academy.

Mr. Cargill who inherited a fortune of some £2million many years ago was a keen sportsman in his younger days and reached the finals of the Scottish Amateur Golf Championship one year.

One of his many pleasures was in his art collection, which was one of the finest private collections in the world. It included exceptionally fine works

by Degas, Gauguin, Monet and Renoir, which were regarded as being considerably superior to many of these artists’ works in national galleries.

Later in life, William was regarded as something of a recluse and spent much of his time tending the gardens of his manor at Carruth House where up to six gardeners were employed. He also had a collection of old cars, including a pre-war Talbot, a Riley, a Morris and an Austin, which were garaged in the stables at the back of Carruth House.

After his death, Williams’s art collection was auctioned at Sotheby’s in London on 11th June 1962 and drew collectors from all over the world.

The proceeds of the sale went to the W.A. Cargill Fund set up by him for charitable purposes.

By the 1770s, lists of chattels owned by the Cunninghams give details of nearly 300 enslaved Africans working 377 acres of sugar cane. They were captured on the west coast of Africa and carried in deplorable condition across the Atlantic. When Cunningham purchased the Africans off the slave ships, he gave them new names, including ‘Kilbarchan’, ‘Craigends’ and ‘Paisley’.

The Kilmacolm community is due a huge debt of gratitude to the W.A. Cargill Fund for its donations to a range of local organisations. In particular in 2002, a community-led campaign was launched to establish a refurbished Community Centre and Library. The Fund helped kick-start the £2.3m project by making a £1m donation to Kilmacolm New Community Centre Co. (K.N.C.C.). It also made a grant towards the setting up of this Heritage Gallery.

The design and business model that was finally approved and funded was for a major upgrade and refurbishment of two of the four former community facilities that are situated in the centre of the village main street.

By 1834 the Cunninghams had profited from Grandville plantation for This magnificent campus comprises: a century. In the Government compensation records at the abolition of • A 3-storey new Kilmacolm Community Centre • A new village square plantation slavery that year, William Cunningham, 14th of Craigends, was • A single storey Library • A 2-storey commercial space awarded £3,278 for the loss of 185 enslaved Africans at Grandville (more than £200,000 at today’s value). Their overseer, Taylor Cathcart, was also compensated for loss of slaves on a plantation of his own.

Next door to the Cunninghams, Lochwinnoch Having had our final meeting for this session we will not have another till 10th September. However, the Parish was dominated by the McDowall family. Museum will continue to open as usual Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10.30am till 4pm.

GasMan Energy Donate Engineers to Charity On the 1st of May GasMan donated 6 engineers to St Vincent’s hospice in Howwood. The company advised that St Vincent’s could use the engineers in whatever way they wanted.

Local plumbing merchant Wolseley based in Paisley also donated over three thousand pounds worth of sanitary products that GasMan fitted during the day in the day centre and bathrooms. The engineers also built and painted new outdoor furniture for the gardens, painted, weeded and fitted new water heaters in the Johnstone charity shop.

Healthy Food & Drinks ... or Not?

by Sheila Macintyre, Practice Owner at Kilbarchan Dental Practice Nearly half of foods and drinks marketed at UK children are far less healthy than they claim, a recent study has revealed.

A team at Glasgow University examined more than 300 products including many items with healthy messages on them such as fruit snacks, fruit drinks, cereal bars and cereals.

A number of concerns about the products themselves and the way they were presented as healthy natural alternatives were highlighted. For example, the packaging on 80 fruit-based drinks and snacks claimed to contain no added sugar however more than 40 had concentrated fruit juice or fruit puree as added ingredients which contain “free” sugars (“healthy” kid’s yoghurts often contain fruit puree too).

The report also found that many “100% Fruit” snacks contained an average of 48g of sugar per 100g and often contained highly processed fruit (eg. puree) or “concentrated fruit juice” that could contribute to tooth damage.

Likewise “healthy” unsweetened fruit juice which, when juiced, releases the sugar in the fruit, that can damage teeth and may cause tooth decay.

Researcher Dr Ada Garcia said: “Some people will see processed fruits as a healthy alternative snack but the sugars in highly processed fruit and fruit juice...This means children may become hungrier more quickly and these free sugars also contribute to tooth damage and tooth decay.”

Scientists and doctors say that more stringent regulation and clearer information on packaging is needed. For now, don’t just assume that because products look or sound healthy that they are. Check all the ingredients and quantities and recommended daily intakes to make a more informed decision.

Rabbit Flystrike

Equine Rescue and Education SCIO

What is flystrike?

You may have previously known us as Animal Support and Rescue Rescue. For various reasons we were advised to set up a new charity which we did and have called it “Equine Rescue and Education SCIO.” It’s the same horses and mainly the same people.

Flystrike is a devastating condition caused by the green bottle fly, which is attracted to lay its eggs in areas with damp fur soiled with urine or soft faeces. Each fly can lay up to 200 eggs which then hatch into maggots within hours and grow by feeding on flesh. The maggots can very quickly eat away large areas of tissue around the bottom, tail, belly and back.

What are flystrike?

Initially your pet may just look quiet, so it’s important to check your rabbits’ fur daily for any signs of maggots or skin lesions.

As the maggots grow they eat away more of the skin surface area. This can lead to the development of shock and eventually to collapse and death.

If you find maggots crawling in your rabbit’s fur, it is an emergency and you should contact your vet immediately.

How is flystrike treated?

It is important to seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible to give your rabbit the best chance of survival. Treatment comprises of removing the maggots, clipping and cleaning the fur, providing pain relief, topical soothing products and antibiotics. In more severe cases hospitalisation for fluid therapy, treatment of complications and syringe feeding may be required.

In some cases where extensive tissue loss has occurred a rabbit may need to be euthanized to relieve suffering.

What can I do to prevent flystrike?

Rabbits who cannot groom themselves effectively due to long fur, obesity, arthritis or painful teeth are at greater risk of flystrike, therefore ensuring your rabbit remains fit and healthy reduces the risk.

We recommend to check your rabbits’ bottom at least twice a day during the high risk summer period to detect any infestation early.

You can also apply treatments to rabbits during the risk period that prevent eggs from hatching into maggots, protecting your rabbit from flystrike.

Volunteers Required PREVIOUSLY We are looking for volunteers that can commit to time on the yard or to help with fundraising. We were selected

by Pets at Home, Abbotsinch as their Charity of the Year and during their summer campaign which runs from 17 May to 13 June we need to complete 8 hours per week in store, can collecting or anything else to raise awareness and support the store with their campaign.

Gringo Gringo was part of a rescue of 60 cobs in 2015, who were all due to go to slaughter.

The Charity were notified and asked if they could take any of them.

We travelled down to England for 2 cobs, when we arrived there were only 4 cobs left, Gringo, Bajo, Nellie and Finlay, and we brought them all home. Nellie and Finlay were very lucky and secured new homes within a few months. Gringo and Bajo were with the Charity for a couple of years and were rehomed together in October 2018.

Unfortunately, Gringo recently came back to the charity through no fault of his own. One of our current livery clients has adopted Gringo for her young sister. The girls are going to work together with Gringo to bring him on.

Hopefully in 2020 we will see Gringo out at some local shows.

The Charity would like to thank Georgia and Grace for taking Gringo on and we wish them both the very best for the future.

Re-homing Pets Avril was not very hand tame when she arrived in our care, however she is coming along well.

Avril will need a large cage and lots of things for her to do so that she does not get bored. An outdoor run would also be beneficial.

Bishopton Art Group Summer Exhibition Between Saturday 8th June and Thursday 27th June

Bishopton Library, 11 Greenock Road, Bishopton, PA7 5JW, during normal opening hours Bishopton Art Group will host their summer art exhibition with a variety of styles of paintings for sale and on display by members of the Art Group. As part of the Bishopton Day festivities, local village fete, visitors will also have the opportunity to take part in a free competition that will test their powers of observation.

After viewing the paintings, from Tuesday 11th June, visitors of all ages can take part in a free to enter competition with a chance to win a gift voucher.

Their powers of observation along with local knowledge will be tested and all correct entries will be entered in a draw to win a gift voucher. The prize will be awarded to the first all correct answer drawn after the closing date, with the winner announced after the exhibition closes..

Financial Ombudsman Service.… higher compensation limits now apply

by Carl Melvin, Affluent Financial Planning Ltd When a person has received poor financial advice that has resulted in a loss, they can seek redress from the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS).

Previously, the FOS was limited to awarding compensation to a maximum of £150,000 but the Financial Conduct Authority as part of its plans to expand the ombudsman’s services to small and medium enterprises (SMEs) has increased the compensation limit to £350,000.

• Bob Armstrong, Past President spoke movingly about his very sobering visit to “Warsaw and Auschwitz” • Alan Bowie, Past President spoke to the club about his former colleague and friend Alastair Dunne whom he described as a “genius”, a “madman”, a “giant”, the “funniest person he ever met” and a “great salesman”.

Alastair joined Alan and Alan’s father in their business in 1970 as Sales Director. He was multitalented - using his humour to great effect in building relationships with customers, playing with a dance band, and winning a formidable reputation as being one of the best after-dinner speakers in the country. He retired three times and passed away in 2012.

• Margaret Brook spoke to the club on 8th May on “Street Pastors”.

Margaret is a widow with a family of two sons and a daughter, who has lived Houston since 1988. Along with a team of fellow volunteers she works as a Street Pastor in Paisley patrolling central Paisley’s nightclubs and pubs from around 11.00pm until 3.00 or 4.00am on Friday nights, helping anyone who may need a blanket, gloves or socks or just a friendly chat, often young girls who are the worse for wear and may be disorientated. Margaret explained that Street Pastors were founded in Jamaica by Les Isaac with the first in the UK starting in Brixton in 2003. They now have twenty thousand volunteers in in 300 town/cities throughout the world. Their motto is “Caring, Listening, Helping”.

After many questions, President Andrew expressed admiration for Margaret’s selfless commitment to help others and thanked her for a most interesting talk.

The changes mean that from 1 April 2019 individuals and SMEs will be able to complain to the FOS and, if the incident complained about took place on or after this date, they will be able to claim up to £350,000. If it took place before 1 April 2019 the compensation limit will be £160,000. Both limits will be increased by consumer prices inflation every year to make sure consumers and small businesses receive adequate compensation.

The regulator said the higher limit was needed because the existing one was too low for SMEs. The increase in limit follows a review of the protections available to small businesses following the Royal Bank of Scotland global restructuring unit scandal, which was accused of artificially distressing otherwise viable businesses.

The changes mean that businesses with an annual turnover below £6.5m and fewer than 50 employees, or an annual balance sheet below £5m will be able to refer unresolved complaints to the ombudsman service. Extinction Rebellion Are Coming!

International eco-awareness group Extinction Rebellion (XR) are looking to set up a Renfrewshire Branch. The organisation - known for their bold brand of eco-activism - are expanding their Scottish operations in the hope of getting more people involved at a local level. The Renfrewshire expansion project entitled ‘Into the Shire’, will feature a series of eight talks run by local XR volunteers and held in venues across the local area throughout May and June. Event Organizer David Carruth, from Elderslie, had this to say about the expansion, “The aim of this is to make XR more accessible for people living outside Glasgow as well as to create a space for the extended environmental community to come together and mobilise. There is already an incredibly committed and dedicated environmental community living across Renfrewshire and with so many people to engage with we are really excited to see where this project will lead.”

Following the talk series, the group are hoping to set up weekly meetings where local members can meet up and discuss the changing environment and plan future events and action in the local area and beyond. Mary, an XR member from Houston had this to say, “I am really excited about rolling out XR into Renfrewshire. It is crucial to build on the energy already generated and the progress made. The more people who are engaged; the louder our voice, the harder it will be for local and national governments to ignore our demands. Compensation for psychological injuries caused by accidents Can innocent victims of disasters such as the recent Glasgow Bin Lorry and Clutha Helicopter tragedies claim compensation (from the negligent party causing the disaster) for psychological injuries caused by involvement in such tragedies?

A person physically injured in an accident can also claim compensation for psychological injury. If not injured physically, however, to claim he/she must have suffered an identifiable psychological/psychiatric condition (not simply fear, anxiety or distress).

The court then must be satisfied that the claimant is a “primary” or “secondary” victim:a) “Primary victims” These are immediate accident “participants” and persons “within range of foreseeable injury”. Successful claims have included emergency services personnel and also members of the public who assisted at the scene.

“Primary” victims also include those close enough to the disaster to have

reasonably feared suffering direct physical injury. In a case heard last month, a pedestrian witnessed the Glasgow Bin Lorry tragedy, hearing the lorry crash into a taxi. She suffered serious psychological injury by her involvement. The court however refused her claim. She was not a “primary” victim. There had been insufficient likelihood of physical injury. She had not assisted those directly injured: the crash happened 40 metres away and neither vehicle had veered towards her. b) “Secondary” victims Those not sufficiently closely involved to be “primary” victims, but who have either seen/heard the accident, attended the immediate aftermath or (perhaps) visited victims at hospital. Additional hurdles: such “secondary” victims must have had “close ties of love and affection” with a primary victim of the incident. They also must have been in sufficient proximity in time/ space to the accident. This requirement for “proximity” is narrowly defined: for example, claimants suffering injury watching TV news reports about disasters involving relatives will probably fail with a claim.

Lollipops for Langbank - by the Chamber Pots The Chamber Pots quartet has been playing together for about ten years, having met when they all played in the Glasgow Chamber Orchestra. On Sunday, 9th June they will present a selection of their favourite lollipops in Langbank Church from 2.30pm – 3.30pm. The music will range from Pirates of the Caribbean to a medley from the Sound of Music. Admission is £5. Why not come along and enjoy an afternoon of light musical entertainment.

Bridge of Weir Barbers - New Staff Claire at Bridge of Weir Barbers would like to welcome new staff member Tricia.

An additional member of staff means that the team of three is able to provide much more flexibility for clients to drop in - no need for an appointment - without the prospect of having to sit waiting in a queue; although clients should still feel free to ask for the Barber of their choice.

The long-established Barbers is located at the foot of Livery Walk in Bridge of Weir and is open Monday, (closed Tuesday), Wednesday, Thursday and Friday 9am to 5pm, and Saturday 9am to 1pm.

Bridge of Weir Community Council Maintenance: At the May meeting the Community Council discussed the general condition at Gryffe Grove/ Main Street where the boundary wall was severely damaged and left in a state of disrepair. The open space opposite has also not been maintained as was the similar case last year. The Community Council will write to the Heads of the appropriate departments asking when these areas will be attended to.

Traffic Calming:. It was reported that the survey of the Junction at Prieston Road has been undertaken and await the Council Official’s findings.

Hopefully soon the 30mph signs at St Mary’s church will be installed, and the traffic calming measures at Kilmacolm Road and other entrances to the village.

Elections: The Community Council is quickly approaching the end of its 4 year term, although an interim election was held in 2018, the full Community Council is due to stand down and the election for the new council will be held during September.

Over the summer months take a good look around your village and see what you think needs to be done and how you could help make improvements by considering joining the new Council.

Next Meeting: to be held before the summer recess, takes place on Tuesday 4th June at 7.00pm in the Cargill Hall.

Freelands church are holding a free holiday club for children P1P6 (ie.those who will have already completed P1-P6). Lots of fun to be had! The Family Finale takes place Friday 26th July at 8.30pm.

Over the last month, I had the pleasure of attending various litter picks and clean up days across Bishopton, Bridge of Weir and Langbank in aid of Renfrewshire’s Big Spring Clean. In Bishopton, I had a great time helping Bishopton Community Council across their weekend of litter picks. In Bridge of Weir I organised my very own village clean up and was very thankful to all the volunteers who helped out on the day. Following that, I joined the Bridge of Weir TARA to clean up the back of Houston Road Park. I could not believe the amount of rubbish and fly tipping we found up there so I hope that it never gets to that stage again. Finally, I was pleased to help Langbank Community with their annual clean-up day. All the clean-ups were well attended although it was a shame that none of my other ward councillors could come along to help support the community.

In relation to ward issues, I have been working on various matters across Bishopton, Bridge of Weir and Langbank and will do my best to give a brief rundown.

In Bishopton, the Driver Feedback Signs have now been installed on Kingston Road. I am also working on safety concerns in relation to crossing Greenock Road for Bishopton Primary School. Improvement works have now taken place in Bishopton cemetery with just some minor works still to take place. In Bridge of Weir, the traffic survey at the Main Street/Prieston Road junction has now been carried out and I am awaiting the results of that.

Improvement works are due for Kilbarchan cemetery and I am just awaiting the finalised programme and timescales. The new play park equipment in Houston Road Park is hoped to be complete in July. Finally, I previously reported the proposed measures for Livery Walk Car Park and the traffic regulation order for these is now being drafted with consultation expected to take place during the summer. I would stress that timescales are always subject to change but you can be sure that I will keep you updated.

Preparation of the next Local Development Plan is now underway and the proposed plan is currently out for consultation until the 10th June. The plan sets out the land use planning framework for Renfrewshire. Three Sisters Bake Open ‘Cake Bar’ It is amazing what we can learn about other parts of the world from Google and the like. Newspapers and books also help to broaden the mind. So it is with interest that I read in the Daily Telegraph about the recycling issues that Kirklees Council in West Yorkshire face. Council have taken to confiscating peoples’ green bins if they find contaminating recyclable items. Contaminated recycle bins is a problem for Renfrewshire Council too. We haven’t got to the stage of confiscating bins but the council has taken the action to refuse to empty a bin. If this happens then there should be a tag put on the bin to advise you of the reason for non-uplift.

Many people think that opposition councillors are just there to make life difficult for the administering group, but we are not always out for political point scoring. While we might try to do things differently if we were in power, we also make constructive suggestions. Many of these suggestions will come from our constituents and we are very grateful for them. So if you think something should be changed for the better then please drop me a line to say so.

I am particularly concerned about the lack of safety at Greenock Road in Bishopton following an incident where a pupil was struck and had to be taken away in an ambulance. I attended a site visit the other day and although there will a part time 20 mph restriction at school time introduced, I am not convinced that this will be enough. Other issues that I am involved with are calling on Renfrewshire Council to ensure the park at Anderson Road in Bishopton is properly maintained.

The covered walkway plans are a welcome investment for Langbank Primary School, but they must be carried out with due diligence. The project now seems to have been hit with delays and it is concerning if Renfrewshire Council are now looking at cheaper options in order to finalise the works.

Also, the school had received £4,000 in year one and £3,500 in year two of what was supposed to be a three year initiative surrounding pupil equity funding, but now funding has been axed. This funding was a vital source and it is hugely disappointing that it has been removed without forewarning. I am calling on Renfrewshire Council to make up a shortfall in funding for the School.

Kilmacolm Camera Club For more than ten years now, the Camera Club has provided the Advertizer with snippets of news and associated images. Sadly, this will be the last item of Club news, as it is in the process of winding up after nearly 67 years.

Back in the 1950s, members’ social lives revolved around the Club activities – no distractions such as television, computers or mobile phones! Every week, hours were spent in the darkroom, mixing chemicals and watching a new image evolve in a developing dish.

The new millennium brought us into the world of digital photography, and the Club successfully managed this momentous transition. However, falling membership made it impossible to continue.

Nevertheless, this doesn’t mean that we will be trading in our cameras for the latest mobile phone, complete with selfie stick! Eagle-eyed readers can still glimpse the occasional sighting of a lesser-spotted Club member at the Agricultural Show, Duchal Wood, floral exhibitions or a Birkmyre rugby match.

We may even continue our legendary photographic outings and, subject to Advertizer approval, publish a selection of images from time to time.

Kilmacolm Rock Choir The Kilmacolm Rock Choir is celebrating being in its 9th year with over 50 members coming to weekly rehearsals from Kilmacolm and the surrounding area. Led by enthusiastic Rock Choir Leader Jennifer Sim the choir meets on Tuesday mornings at the Kilmacolm Community Centre and rehearse for 1.5hours during term-time.

“So many of the choir have been coming along for years not only because they enjoy singing but also because they have made such good friends” explains Jennifer. At Rock Choir there is no requirement to audition or read music and with over 30,000 members now singing with Rock Choir its the largest contemporary choir in the UK. Rock Choir recently had the honour of opening The Proms in the Park at Hyde Park in September last year, performing to a crowd of 40,000 people. ‘It was such an exhilarating experience singing on stage with 70 of my talented Rock Choir colleagues and having the BBC Orchestra playing for us. We got everyone in the Park singing and dancing along with us and we are absolutely thrilled to have been asked back to do the same again this year.”

The Kilmacolm Rock Choir get involved in a range of performances and events, many of which raise money for charity. Recently the sang at the KILTWALK for Beatson Cancer Charity and in May they have been invited to sing at the Ideal Home Show at the SECC. “No two performances are ever the same” remarks Jennifer. Jennifer, who went to school in Kilmacolm, loved singing in her school choir and it was this love of singing that got her joining Rock Choir and starting up a choir in Kilmacolm. “ I also run choirs in Largs, Bothwell, Milngavie and Glasgow City Centre and there are over 350 members coming to sing with me each week. Its very rewarding as i can see how much everyone enjoys singing and being part of something special. I’m very lucky to have such a fun job.”

The Kilmacolm Rock Choir would like to invite people from the community to join them on Saturday 22nd June at 2pm they will be performing a selection of feel-good upbeat songs at St.Columba Church with donations at the door going to the Church & Ardgowan Hospice. Refreshments will also be provided.

Every 4th Monday the local neighbourhood officer, will hold a surgery in the Community Centre between 10.30am 11.30am.

I met with 14 residents of Quarry Drive and others regarding the no1 bus which was withdrawn 6 months ago due to inconsiderate parking. I was accompanied by two senior bus route schedulers from SPT and a roads engineer from Inverclyde Council. It is essential that we reinstate this lifeline service for many of our residents, and those present made their point very clearly! Officers will use their expertise to develop a compromise solution. I am also meeting with the Chief Executive of McGills Buses to discuss similarly.

P5, P6 and P7 of KPS in conjunction with Scottish Opera performed the “Year 1719”. The pupils were transformed into Spaniards, Hanoverians and Jacobites. In actions and song they performed the story of the battle of Sherriffmuir and its repercussions in that year. There was a standing ovation and credit must go to the head, her staff and in particular the pupils who learned their actions on the day. Super show.

Kilmacolm Old Kirk Social Events A group of 13, led by the minister, visited Geneva on May 2nd - 5th. The group visited the World Council of Churches, the International Museum of the Reformation, St Peter’s Cathedral and the Reformation Wall Monument, a 100m long wall built in 1909 and featuring statues and figures in bas -relief of many of the main individuals, events and documents of the Protestant Reformation.

We attended the Sunday service at The Auditoire de Calvin, now the Church of Scotland in Geneva, where John Calvin preached and debated with John Knox. Some of the group who are choir members at the Old Kirk were invited to join the choir for the morning. We were made very welcome at the service and at coffee afterwards.

In addition to the religious sites, the group had time to take a short lake trip, visit a French market, go on the tourist bus to see the many international HQs of Geneva and try the delicious fondue.

OUTLOOK There is no Outlook programme until September 5th when there is a coach outing to Paisley Abbey.

The Civic Trust and Community Council held a meeting with regard to the Gladman application for housing in greenbelt at North Denniston, this was well attended. I am hoping that the planning hearing will be held this time in the village similarly to the one regarding the application at Planetreeyetts for 100 houses which will be heard in the village on the 21st August . I recommend attending, to witness the objectivity, technicality and democracy of the planning process. The Carsemeadow application in Quarriers is currently on appeal with the Scottish Government following refusal by Inverclyde Council.

These planning applications are coming thick and fast and given the recent Sunday Times study that says that the village is among the top ten places to stay in Scotland, I am not surprised.

The Kilmacolm and Port Glasgow Agricultural Show was a real success, aided by the wonderful weather. This is a serious show and ranks highly in Scotland.

Appreciation is due to Andrew Laird his Directors and various convenors for giving us an event that is a credit to the village. The St Columba’s Pipe Band performed with an amazing 55 musicians , pipers and drummers. The following day at the Gourock Highland Games they competed for the first time and won the Grade 4. Renfrewshire Schools and St Columba’s pipe bands competed at the major British Championship at Paisley and came 3rd and 2nd respectively in Grade 4. This is serious competitive piping.

Scottish Water have consulted on major sewer repairs within the village, mainly around Port Glasgow Road and Woodrow Avenue. This will cause major inconvenience but I am sure we are supportive of the disruption to make sure that certain houses are not experiencing nasty sewer issues when there is heavy rain.

Birkmyre Rugby Club finished 4th in the West of Scotland league three. A creditable performance and given the younger members now on board, it bodes well for next season. I will not elaborate on how Jocky was bested by the lady speaker at the dinner! The big prize goes to the under 15’s who won the West of Scotland Championship against Whitecraigs at Parklea. The Birkmyre Minis and Midis number some 200 and thanks must go to the many parents who support with coaching.

I do not know when the pub will open, but I hear it will be worth waiting for.

I am delighted that at the recent English local elections there was a surge in support for Independent Councillors who were elected, and re-elected, in significant numbers.

This is not only a sign of disenchantment with party politics but a realisation that strong independent voices in the civic chamber benefits communities. Independents have a direct link to their constituents and can fight for their interests 100%, whereas Party Councillors have to serve the Party Whip as well and have to fight for their constituents with one hand tied behind their back.

At the last meeting of Kilbarchan Community Council there was much positive discussion about the route map forward to deliver a package of funding to upgrade the historic and much loved Steeple Hall. For my part I have had a sustained dialogue with Historic Environment Scotland over many months about grants which they have which may be appropriate in terms of renovating the Steeple Hall. These HES grants could be match funded to council investment which was passed at this year’s budget meeting and I have passed all this information onto the Kilbarchan Community Council for their consideration.

In my opinion local government can often be very bureaucratic, and a sad example of this was an erroneous decision to oppose the Howwood Community Council having a drinks license at the Annual Fete this month, which they depend upon to fund future Fetes. This caused a crisis with only a few days to the deadline but I intervened with the Convener of Education and the matter was satisfactorily resolved with the Fete fully legal.

I recently supported the Lochwinnoch Community Council Litter Pick and also on the same day I was pleased to attend the end of the celebrations at the War Memorial to commemorate a century of the Boys Brigade in the village, and was in fact the only Ward Cllr to attend either event. I am constantly bemoaning the lack of investment in my ward compared to Paisley so I am pleased that Calder Drive, Braehead Avenue, and Calderpark Street are all being resurfaced by the Council.

Elderslie Summer Fayre

Saturday 22nd June from 12noon at Elderslie Village Hall Building on the success of last year’s first event in 35 years, Elderslie Community Council are very pleased to say they are having another Summer Fayre this year. We are planning a fun-filled event that is sure to appeal to all the family, with indoor and outdoor activities and a raffle to raise further funds for the Queens Road play park fund.

Last year we had well over 500 attendees so we would like to invite everyone to come along, hopefully enjoy the good weather again! We got so much positive feedback from last years event, it felt as though the whole village came along and had nothing but positive things to say so it definitely brought a sense of community to the village.

It is the time of year when our three villages and the town of Johnstone start preparations for summer events. By the time you read this some of these events will have occurred.

On the first of June Kilbarchan will be celebrating Lilias Day, 8th June Lochwinnoch Gala, 15th June Howwood Fete and 25th August Johnstone Gala. Lets hope that all events are a resounding success.

Kilbarchan Smile LITTER PICK Volunteers turned out on the 28th of May to join in the Kilbarchan Community Spring Clean, in association with Renfrewshire Council’s ‘Team Up to Clean Up’ campaign. The burn in Bog Park was tackled for the first time, enhancing the environment and making it safer for wildlife. 30 sacks were filled, with additional clearing carried out by our team of ‘doorstep litter pickers’, who work regularly on problem areas. Thanks go to everyone who participated, everyone who avoids dropping litter in the first place and to Habbies and Greggs for providing well earned refreshments.

A site visit was arranged by the Planning Department to Lochwinnoch as a result of the proposed Planning Application to install a Hydro Electric scheme within touching distance of the Lochwinnoch Cemetery, and to construct a building to house the generator. Several residents attended the site as well as local householders within the site area, together with Councillors and members of the Planning Board. It is expected that a decision will be made at the next Planning Board Meeting.

I mentioned, in the May edition of the Advertizer, details about the A737 Action Group. I wrote to the various government bodies associated with roads, transport and infrastructure as well as MSP’s, inviting them to attend a meeting on the 7th June at 2.00pm in the Boarding House in Howwood. It is hoped that a positive discussion will take place. I am pleased to say that at present we are expecting five MSP’s to be present also representatives from the Police, Transport Police, several Community Councils and Government officials. Hopefully something worthwhile will come out of it.

RESPONSIBLE DOG OWNERSHIP Kilbarchan Smile promotes responsible dog ownership and keeping our village free from dog waste. Most dog owners in the village are responsible dog owners. We met lots on them on our dog walk around Kilbarchan on Sunday 28th April. All the folks we talked to agree that dog mess can be a problem. If you have a problem area email Kilbarchan Smile and we can mark the pavement nearby with a temporary ‘stencil’ that reminds people to pick up their dog mess. Alternatively contact Renfrewshire Wardens.

I attended the recent Parent Council Liaison Meeting, which I understand is a rarity for an elected member to do. However, I learned that new guidelines from a Scottish government review will change some of the current school meal arrangements. It will see changes to fat, salt and sugar content in various meal options. The Council are considering the removal of the Grabn-Go option and replacing it with a substantial meal, while providing a variety of meal options through the week. A new Catering Manager has been appointed to oversee the implementation of this new approach. For me it is a sort of de ja vue as this is something I was used to back in my school days!

The informal crossing at Kilbarchan Primary School has been in operation for around 5 years. Since its introduction issues associated with inconsiderate parking and volume of traffic in the area have occasionally been raised with me. In view of recent concerns, and the anticipated increased numbers of places at Kilbarchan Community Nursery arising from the expansion of child care and early learning provision, I have asked the Council to arrange a site visit to review the impact of the crossing and consider any additional traffic calming measures that may be necessary.

On a related matter, at its most recent meeting Renfrewshire Council called on the Scottish Government to allow councils to decide where to impose 20 mph speed limits in their residential areas, an action I have long supported.

This seems eminently sensible, as the council and our communities have the knowledge as to which locations are most appropriate for such a measure.

At the same council meeting it was agreed to inspect and review schools red blaes football pitches with a view to future investment, a plan that I have previously advocated. I will keep readers updated on these issues.

The problem of rubbish, litter and general waste being dumped in the large blue recycling bins at the McKillop has been causing an eyesore and health hazard in what is the centre of the village. Given that as recently as December villagers were provided with an additional green bin for recycling glass, tins and plastics at a total cost across Renfrewshire of 1.3 million, along with the fact that the McKillop has its own lockable bins, these additional bins were unnecessary and misused. I asked the council to remove them and am pleased to report that they have now been taken away. Thanks are due to members of Lochwinnoch Community Council for their persistence in raising this matter, which brought this about.

There are still a number of environmental issues outstanding in Howwood that were identified in a walkabout earlier in the spring. These include work on the footpath and hedges in Midton Road, blocked gullies in Bowfield Road and street light columns at Kilknowe cottages. I am pressing the council to complete this work.

The council introduced what it describes as a refreshed complaints procedure at the beginning of April. Details can be found on the council web site. This will be of particular interest to those constituents who have told me of their increasing frustrations, and the difficulty in getting in touch with the councils customer service section.

June is the month of Gala Days and village fetes. I hope that villagers enjoy Lilias Day in Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch and Howwood Gala Days and of course hope that the weather is kind. Many thanks go to all those who arrange and help bring about these special occasions.

It was with great pleasure that I recently attended the Gryffe High awards ceremony and it was truly inspiring to see so many young people being awarded not only academic awards, but sporting awards too. Mr Johnston and his staff team are to be commended for encouraging a culture of excellence at the school. The awards ceremony was particularly poignant for me as I was very aware these school students are at the beginning of their academic career, and my own son, a former Head Boy of Gryffe High School, graduates in medicine from Aberdeen University later this year.

Recently I attended the Renfrewshire Fairtrade Meeting in Gryffe High, and it was very interesting to listen to the activities of the Fairtrade movement locally. There has recently been much justified publicity about the challenges of climate change but part of that challenge is helping to make farming sustainable across the globe, and local churches and schools are to be especially commended for supporting Fairtrade for many years.

Not so very long ago I believed that it was fair that local bus services should have an element of competition, but given the virtual private monopoly that McGills Buses has had in Renfrewshire for the best part of a decade, I am now coming around to the view that we would be as well to have a public monopoly of bus services, to ensure a better service for all. I have had once again reports of missing buses and a reduction in service to the villages in my ward and this is simply not good enough.

Houston Community Council Meeting held on the 17th April 2019 Policing: The attending Community Police Officers reported a total of 9 recorded crimes for the period.

The crimes included 4 accounts of theft, 1 account of serious assault, 3 accounts of anti social behaviour and 1 road traffic offence.

Planning: Local residents attended the meeting to state their objection to the proposed change of use of the land adjacent to Manse Crescent. In Renfrewshire Councils recently published proposal for the new Local Development Plan, Renfrewshire Council has proposed to allow the building of 10 self-build homes on the land.

Prior to Renfrewshire Council including this land in the proposed Local Development Plan, HCC had already applied to Renfrewshire Council to have the land ‘ Asset Transferred’ to the community as it is seen as valuable public open space for the long-term benefit of Houston and Crosslee residents. Situated on the land currently, is the newly planted community orchard that Bee Happy and the local primary schools collaborated on. This project was funded by Renfrewshire Council. The land

Crafty Friends is used for a wide variety of local recreational purposes, including children’s play, dog walking as well as a variety of established wildlife.

HCC is opposed to any scaled developments in the village on the basis of the cumulative impact on the local infrastructure (schools, roads, drainage, amenities etc.), which require significant investment to cope with additional residents. There is also significant brownfield land currently available in Renfrewshire that requires regeneration. This land should be prioritised before further greenbelt, the green network or useable green spaces are lost. HCC has until the 10th June to respond to the Proposed Local Development Plan. Views are sought from local residents prior to submission.

Houston Pathways: A project is underway to look at developing a network of pathways linking Houston and Crosslee with neighbouring villages. Safe walking and cycling routes connecting to existing pathway infrastructures would enhance the local area creating a healthier and happier community. HCC are applying for funding to complete a feasibility study.

Superday With Superheroes At Houston And Killellan Kirk Carnival What a wonderful success Houston and Killellan Kirk Carnival was, the sun was shining and a large crowd of people came along and had a fantastic day. The carnival Queen Jenna McKenzie and her attendant Beth Callaghan along with the King Jude Steele and his attendant Harris Clark all looked resplendent as they arrived at the Church Hall. After the crowning ceremony all stalls were kept extremely busy, hotdogs, beef burgers, tearoom all keeping the hunger at bay. The stalls in The Carrick Centre and the Church Hall were kept busy all afternoon as were the sideshows and the various bouncy castles etc. The total so far is £13,000 a fantastic amount to raise. The Conveners of the Carnival would like to thank everyone involved in making the day such a success.

Houston & Killellan Kirk Kirk at Houston Show As part of our venture out into the community, some members of Houston & Killellan Kirk will be manning (perhaps not politically correct in the 21st century?) a stall at the Show to specifically publicise what goes on in and around the Kirk. In particular, we can provide details of what is available in organisations for the young folk – and, indeed, the not so young folk. We may not be as cute as some of the other exhibits, but we do not bite! So do drop by and say “Hello”, or else we will be very lonely!

Foodbank Ongoing Need The Trussell Trust, operating in our area as Renfrewshire Foodbank www. renfrewshire.foodbank.org.uk depends on general public donations for 90% of the food they distribute – and the need is ongoing. Traditionally, Houston & Killellan Kirk has focused the appeal on two specific Sundays each year. However, hardly a Sunday has gone by without a member of the generous congregation bringing a food donation. Now, as part of the Kirk congregation’s outreach in the local community, the Kirk would like to encourage this by asking members to consider donating a tin at a time, whenever they feel able to do so.

Brookfield News SUMMER SOCIAL - SUNDAY 2nd JUNE Brookfield Village Council cordially invites residents, their family and friends to come along to the annual Summer Social which will take place in the Park on SUNDAY 2nd JUNE from 2pm - 5.30pm. Once again, this will be an opportunity to get together with fellow villagers and enjoy some summer refreshments from the bar. Strawberries & cream will also be available. This will be the fifth year of this event and so far, we have been lucky enough to enjoy pleasant weather conditions so fingers are well and truly crossed that the trend will continue this year! GALA DAY - SATURDAY 17th AUGUST Planning is underway for our annual Gala Day which will take place on SATURDAY 17th AUGUST. This event is very much ‘for the community by the community’ and relies on the efforts of residents to make it a success.

It is an important fundraising event for the village and monies raised on the day are all reinvested back into our community, primarily supporting the upkeep of the Village Hall. A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes and Brookfield Village Council would be delighted to hear from any residents who would like to join the planning committee this year. Johnstone Johnstone is a town of surprises. With a wide variety of shops, plenty of parking and, what is nowadays a rarity, three banks!

Its two elegant central civic squares, Houstoun Square and Ludovic Square, date back to the 18th century. Houstoun Square is adorned with the wonderful bandstand and fountain gifted to the town by the Laird George Ludivoc Houston in 1891. We now hold a successful Christmas market each year in the square.

The shopkeepers of Johnstone set up the Johnstone Business Consortium in 2014 to promote and encourage local business in the town. The Consortium organises a number of events throughout the year and meets every 3rd Wednesday of every second month at 6.00pm in room 2 of Johnstone Town Hall. No membership fees required, new members welcome to attend.

Come and visit Finlaystone Country Estate, enjoy our beautiful bluebell woods, play areas and gardens. Join our Rangers for fun events at weekends.

Late May and June is undoubtedly the most colourful period in the garden here at Finlaystone and this year has been particularly good.

Must sees in the garden in June include a number of small trees: Embothrium coccineum (the Chilean firetree), Laburnum anagyroides (Golden rain tree), Enkianthus campanulatus, and the rarely seen and very beautiful Halesia carolina.

Jobs to be getting on with this month include putting in supports for herbaceous plants that are susceptible to wind and rain such as thalictrum, oriental poppies and of course dahlias with their large heavy flower heads. Many early spring flowering plants should be pruned now. Forsythia and weigela are examples and remember with Forsythia to cut out a proportion of the older thicker stems to prevent the plant from becoming too congested. In the veg plot an important job is to put supports in place for peas and beans. It’s important to do this early as it will greatly reduce the damage from slugs and snails.

Here at Finlaystone we are always happy to welcome volunteers into the garden where the gardener will always be able to find work for those interested in getting their hands dirty.

In addition to public events we also organise various activities for children’s parties, scout & guide groups or corporate events. Colourful Kilmacolm

Colourful Kilmacolm committee and members have just passed their busiest time of the year. In early May we had a well-attended AGM, when a review of the year showed us to be in a healthy position both financially and in terms of membership and enthusiasm. Then came the local Agricultural Show where, as you can see, some of our committee set up a stall to publicise our activities, and this resulted in a number of donations and new members.

Thank you to all who paid us a visit. A day or two later we visited the nursery and purchased a large selection of plants which, once the finished bulbs had been removed, were planted up to give colourful summer displays. Big lottery funding: We are delighted we have £5,507 for the following activities: A sensory Dementia Friendly Garden and a Community that Supports Nature. We will be developing many containers in the garden and around the village that has nature friendly plants and encouraging wild flowers planting in the village.

Lochwinnoch Wildlife Corridor: It is the intention of the group to create a wildlife corridor through the village. Flowers will be planted for birds, bees, butterflies and other wildlife. Everyone can take part and do their bit for wildlife in their garden. As part of this Lochwinnoch Primary will be visiting the golf course on the 7th June where they will be planting wild flowers in the rough. These include Ox-eye Daises, Yarrow, Knapweed, Bird’s-foot Trefoil and many others. In return the golf course will provide the pupils with a free golf lesson.

SGS Garden Opening CANCELLED Scotland’s Gardens Scheme - please note that the Ardgowan garden opening on Sunday 2nd June has been CANCELLED.

Bridge of Weir Hillwalkers The BoW Hillwalkers have another busy month coming up in June.

June 10th will see an outing to the West Luss hills by Loch Lomond and the 16th. sees an outing to the Brack. This is a rugged Corbett near Arrochar.

On the 24th. we intend to go “trainspotting” to Corrour station in the middle of Rannoch Moor. This involves an access by train only. The outing may ascend Leum Uilleam, another Corbett or can follow the Road to the Isles back to Rannoch.

Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society Alan Crawford regularly wins prizes for his vegetables.

He highly recommends growing your own as the ‘history’ is known and preparing and eating immediately after cutting retains freshness and nutrition. Amongst Alan’s recommendations for novices are Radishes, Beetroots, Courgettes and French or Runner Beans.

With the right conditions, vegetables will grow well in tubs and grow bags. Use vegetable compost containing higher levels of Nitrogen. Before adding to tubs, which have good drainage, break up compost in the bag to remove lumps. Similarly, soften lumps in grow bags before opening.

Traditionally, preparation starts in late autumn when vegetable beds are cleared, then covered with well-rotted manure and compost from old grow bags. Leave legume roots behind and the tiny Nitrogenous nodules will be absorbed back into the soil. In Spring, after the worms have done their bit, work over to get a fine tilth. A dressing of Lime will enhance acidic soil.

There’s loads on so make sure you bring lots of pennies to spend on the many attractions, which include: Tombola, Face Painting, Pick a Straw, Raffle, Home Baking, Ice Creams, Bouncy Castle, Fairground attractions, Snack Van, ‘Nearly New’ stall, Candles, Children’s Clothing, Toys, Sweets, Treats, Slushies and much more…..

If you don’t have a designated vegetable plot, build a rectangular, raised border using scaffolding boards. Make sure you can stretch from side to middle or retain a board to place across the border. Crop rotation is vital for growing vegetables. Alan rotates 4 crops: Legumes, Alliums, Tuberous Crops and Brassicas, in that order. Confuse Carrot Fly by planting Marigolds around the edges, or grow carrots in tubs to avoid these low-flying pests. The strong perfume disguises carrot aromas.

At our meetings, Alan is always available to answer gardening queries and he finished his talk with a lively vegetable Q&A session.

For fun, home-grown Pumpkin plants were handed out at the recent Plant Sale. Everyone is invited to ‘have a go’ and grow the biggest one for Hallowe’en!

The outing on the 8th June will be to Brian Young’s renowned gardens at Holmes Farm, Irvine. Please contact a Committee Member for details.

Welcome to Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park Countryside Ranger Bulletin

Pedal the Park 2019: a 113km challenging cycle took place, good weather resulted in over 200 riders taking part. Money was raised for CLIC Sargent and Ride 63 Community Cycle Club.

Schools: Our Rangers have been working with several schools on their John Muir and Duke of Edinburgh awards. With the weather warming we have managed to start the butterfly and bumblebee transect. The highlight so far has been spotting the lovely Green Hairstreak butterflies at Muirshiel.

Wheels to Water: The Para Sport event takes place on 8th June Castle Semple. This is a large event of assorted water sports aimed at people with disabilities from throughout Scotland. This will be a busy day, with limited space in the café and the car park.

Walking and Cycling Festival: The Park is hosting a cycling and walking festival 6-14 July. This includes a sign posted mountain bike trail on the old water board tracks on the hills by the Greenock Cut Centre.

Semple Stories: The Park has been awarded grants from Heritage Lottery Fund and Greater Renfrewshire & Inverclyde LEADER for a history project – Semple Stories and Lochwinnoch Glories, details to follow.

Finally we say a fond farewell to two long serving members of staff Michael Corrigan & David Hicks who are retiring at the end of June. David has been in The Park for nearly 20 years and Michael, who is the longest serving Countryside Ranger in Scotland, 45 years.

Tag-n-Track Update We have had a spate of arrivals since our update last month. Eric Flapton has returned to Pladda and Happy Gullmore has returned to Little Cumbrae and is making daily trips to Castle Semple. Using the Animal Tracker app we can see he likes to visit us in the afternoons so keep an eye out for him. Ollie is still continuing his migration. He has spent most of the last month in Spain at Isla Cristina, but is now in Olonne-sur-mer in France. As he has not yet found a mate he might spend some time in the colonies trying his luck!

We had been slightly worried about Stuart as his tag stopped transmitting in Newquay on the 20th of April.

However, we are happy to report that Stuart is alive and well. He was spotted for the first time this year at Castle Semple on the 10th of May. If you are down at the Loch it’s worth reading the ring numbers on the birds and seeing where they are from by reporting at www.bto.org. Our members of Team Gull can be identified by their colour rings on their left leg which are white with red writing. You can keep up to date with our gull movements in a number of ways: check out their web pages, follow us on Facebook or download the free “Animal Tracker” app on your tablet or phone.

Do you know your frogs from your toads? What about newts? We are lucky enough to have all of these on the reserve. All amphibians start their lives as eggs in water before adotping the tadpole form before transforming into adults.

The order: Anura holds both frogs (family: Ranidae) and toads (family: Bufonidae). They are both grouped together in the same order as they do not have tails as adults. We have two native species of frogs (Rana) in the UK (common frog and pool frog) and can be distinguished from their close cousins by their smooth wet skin and spend a lot of their time in the water and tend to hop. There are also two native species of toads (Bufo) (common and Natterjack). They have dryer, warty skin and spend more time on the land than frogs and tend to waddle rather than jump.

The other grouping of amphibians that we have in the UK are newts which come from the order: Urodela and are family: Salamandridae.

Newts retain their tails as adults. There are three different native species of newt in the UK, palmate, smooth and great crested.

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society

At his time of year, eggs have hatched, the tadpoles are developing further and starting to grow their legs. Newt tadpoles will have external gills up until late August when they will absorb them and fully become newtlets. All of the frogs, toads and newts lay great numbers of eggs so our ponds are teaming with them. There is also lots of things that could eat them. Why not try to find some in our pond at our Open Day for Nature on Sunday 16 June (11am - 3pm)?

If you develop a greater love for nature from your visit, then come along to our Family Volunteering Day on Saturday 22 June (1pm – 3:30pm).

Here Comes Summer At the time of writing, Brighter Bridge of Weir is anticipating the arrival of this summer’s plants. In fact, by the time you read this, they may already be in place in the planters and baskets along Main Street and Houston Road. The arrival of the new season’s plants is always hectic time or our wee Group. Not that we weren’t busy during the spring, but it’s generally a bit more leisurely than the usual flurry at the end of May and early June.

We’re always hoping for a colourful display from our summer planting, but sometimes it just comes down to luck – the health of the plants and the weather being the two major factors.

The garden project that we have undertaken for the Historical Society was put on the back burner by Renfrewshire Council, due to absences of key liaison players in the departments involved. But it looks as though some progress will be made in the near future.

Meanwhile, just to show that we’ve not been idle, here’s a picture of some of the Group recently. (Yes, they look as though they’re taking it easy, but it was just a break for lunch. Honest.)

Thank you to all who supported the fundraising Coffee Morning and plant sale in May, raising funds in preparation for the annual Flower Show on Saturday 7th September in the community centre, Kilmacolm.

Exhibitors are ever hopeful of a splendid crop of flowers and vegetables for entry in the Show for a schedule or membership of the Society please contact Jill Russell, show secretary, on 01505 872393.

The Garden at the Cross, Kilmacolm, is once more under the care of K.H.S. The central feature is a ‘Carpet Bed’ designed for the 140th anniversary of the Society. More features are planned throughout the year.

The Summer Outing on 26th June will be visiting Drummond Castle Gardens, Crieff, and Kilbryde Castle gardens near Dunblane. The two gardens will contrast the formal 19th century traditions with the more natural flowing contours of Scotland’s country house style.

We have been having lots of fun at toddlers recently.

St Anthonys this month have been playing host to pupils from a variety of local primaries. Children from Glencoats, St Catherines, East Fulton, Auchenlodment and our very own St Anthonys are all taking part in a Maths Camp. Local teaching staff have undertaken additional training in the US at Stanford University. The staff will be teaching lessons using the very latest research collated from neuroscience and the way our brains process mathematics.

Creative and innovative techniques combined with a growth mindset will encourage problem solving and deep thinking which can be used by pupils for more than just maths lessons. Steven Quinn, Interim Director of Children’s Services at Renfrewshire Council and a qualified Maths teacher reiterated this when he said, “Inspiring our pupils to enjoy learning maths is really important not just for improving their maths understanding and achievement, but improving their overall confidence in problem solving and investigation. It also improves learning in a wide range of other subjects”.

We only have 6 weeks left before we finish up for summer break. So some key dates for the diary - Father’s day crafts on 13th June and our teddy bear’s picnic on 27th June.

On the 27th June @ 9.30am we all meet at the village park for some outdoor play and sports. We will provide a snack for adults and children. Please bring water, juice, tea etc with you along with sun cream, hat and picnic blanket/teddy.

Kilmacolm Childminders’ Pebblehunt Kilmacolm Registered Childminders got together to organise an fantastic Easter pebble hunt for the children of the village. All the childminding kids were involved in designing, painting and decorating each pebble, which were then hidden around the village for the children to find on Easter Sunday.

Also this month Mrs McBurnie our Head Teacher and a small group from our parent council were able to take advantage of the fantastic opportunity to learn with Dr A huge congratulations to the Harvey family (Luca Temple Grandin. Kilmacolm Primary Miss Barr and the Primary 2 pupils organised a fantastic MUGA mile where our parents and friends joined us to raise funds for our partner school Phinda primary in Malawi. An amazing £300 was raised and this money will be used to provide new books for the pupils and to complete repairs to the school.

This month we were delighted to welcome Scottish Opera to the school. The primary 5-7 pupils had a morning workshop with the Scottish Opera cast and in the afternoon they performed to their parents. The opera entitled 1719, retold the story of the Spaniards, the Jacobites and the Hanovarians. The afternoon performance to parents lifted the roof with powerful singing, wonderful narrating and fabulous costumes, what a wonderful afternoon of arts.

During Kilmacolm STEM World of Work Week parents and invited guests shared their love of working in a STEM profession with the pupils. Pupils discovered what was involved in various careers including architecture, pharmacy, bioengineering, civil engineering and gas engineering to name but a few. It was a jam packed week of exciting presentations where pupils learned about different routes into work and the variety of skills that are required when working in STEM careers. Primary 1-3 parents joined in the fun by coming along to complete STEM challenges alongside their children. Everyone had a great creative afternoon.

Kilmacolm Nursery Class have been having fun exploring our wonderful outdoors. They have enjoyed working with their friends to go on bug hunts and have been investigating in the mud kitchen. It will soon be time to say goodbye to our older nursery pupils who are busy preparing to start Primary 1 in August. They have been visiting the primary 1 class for joint play sessions we can’t wait till they start school in August!

We have some fantastic prizes and all the money raised is used within the school to benefit your children. The draw for the raffle will take place this year at our next very exciting event, so read on…….

The PTA are organising a Treasure Hunt & BBQ to take place on Friday 14th June 2019.

The event will start at the school from 6.30pm and teams will follow clues which will lead them round Houston, collecting puzzle pieces and scavenger items along the way. If your team successfully negotiates all the clues you will finish at the Carrick Centre where burgers, hotdogs & drinks (including a PTA licensed bar) will be waiting for you.

Whilst you are enjoying the refreshments there will be activities and games to keep you amused before the prizewinning teams are announced at the evenings close at 10pm. The draw for our Annual Raffle will also take place at this time.

This event has been planned to coincide with the end of the P7 induction week and we hope as many families as possible will come along to support this new and exciting event whilst welcoming our newest pupils to Gryffe High School.

Tickets cost £5 per person and include treasure hunt sheet and food.

Additional drinks and snacks will be available to buy at the Carrick Centre.

A preregistration and food order form will be sent home in the next few days and we would appreciate a prompt return, no later than Fri 31May, in order to help with planning and catering for this event. The form is also available on the school website and ShowMyHomework App.

Health and Wellbeing Week Health and Wellbeing week is soon approaching in Johnstone High School.

This is a week where pupils and teachers will be focusing on improving all aspects of health and wellbeing I our school We are looking forward to a pupil versus staff softball game, extra activities in PE and opening up the conversation about mental health issues amongst our young people, as well as many more exciting events. The week should be purposeful and productive for everyone in school.

Kiltwalk We are incredibly proud of a group of teachers that recently took part in The Kilt Walk in order to raise money for Lisa’s Gift. They walked over 20 miles and were smiling the whole way. Well Done!

Moving On This was the final month in Johnstone High School for our wonderful S6. We can honestly say that this year group have been a pleasure to teach and pleasure to know. We are incredibly proud of the respect, determination and kindness that they have shown throughout the year and they can leave Johnstone High School knowing that they made it a better place. The Graduation was an emotional but happy event and the Headteacher’s Award went to the very deserving Zoe Tait. We wish each of them the best of luck in the future.

St Fillan’s Primary Eco Celebration and Family Picnic Recently, we welcomed our parents and partners to attend a whole school celebration to mark the achievement of maintaining our green flag status and achieving our third Eco flag.

Bridge of Weir Primary A huge thank-you to everyone who helped to make such a massive success of May Fayre. From individuals and businesses who donated prizes for the raffle, to the parents who put so much hard work into organising the event, and of course, to everyone who attended. The money raised will help us replace our aging interactive whiteboards.

It’s a busy time for our Primary 7s – they’re currently preparing for their visits to high school, and they’ve also been for the The Annual Trip to Ardentinny, as Ava Miller & Beth Robertson report: Last month P7 travelled to the Ardentinny Outdoor Education Centre, near Dunoon. They got the ferry from Gourock, before getting a bus to the centre.

Over the course of their stay, pupils were split into groups for activities – and what a range there were: abseiling, archery, canoeing, gorge walking, and certainly not forgetting, the disco on the last night.

After all the fun, P7 were certainly ready for home, but not before they’d tidied up. Everyone had a great time, and learned loads more than they would have done in a classroom.

Back at school, it was competition time.

Electric and Shoebox Car Competition By Amy Pitcairn and Lucy Daly In the P3 competition they had to make a shoebox car, which had to go down a ramp and travel as far as possible. The runners up were Imogen Jeffrey and Molly McClymont. The winners from P3b were Cara McClure and Natasha Lynch. They took their winning entry to the schools’ finals in Inchinnan - and won!

Primary 6 had to make an electric car, which would travel in a straight line. They then had to try and get it up a ramp. The runners up were Amy Pitcairn and Anna Carruth, and the winners where Lucy Daly and Lewis Hewitt (P6a). They also went to Inchinnan and won best communication. Well done both years for taking part!

The Eco Committee have worked very hard with the school community to lead and develop a wide range of eco initiatives. Their efforts were recognised by the assessors at ‘Eco Schools Scotland’ who were impressed with the partnership working which we have established with a number of partners including: the ‘Bee Happy’ community group, the local Co-op, Glasgow University and the Clyde River Foundation, RHS, RSPB and Clyde Muirshiel Park.

We celebrated in eco style by having a sustainable family eco picnic in our school grounds and we tried to use recyclable or sustainable packaging to ensure minimum waste.

Lochgoilhead Residential The boys and girls in our Primary 7 class have nearly recovered from their action packed residential excursion to Lochgoilhead.

The children enjoyed taking part in a range of fun activities including: abseiling, rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, Jacob’s ladder and a burn run through a fast running river.

It was great to see the children develop their leadership skills and ability to work as part of a team and they certainly lived by our school values of: trust, faith, teamwork and success.

They had to follow our school aim of ‘Being Brave’ as they encountered situations that were outwith their comfort zones and tested their resilience, character and grit!

The children were a credit to our school and local area and were commended by the instructors for their polite manners, approach to team work and their resilient mindset to overcome challenges and their willingness to support others to do the same.

Houston Primary Primary 7 pupils had an amazing five day trip away to Loch Insh. They have returned with a wealth of experience of water sports, with the favourite being wind surfing. On dry land the pupils enjoyed cycling, archery and wayfinding.

A great time was had by all. A huge thank you to the staff who accompanied the children.

Our poly tunnel has been recovered with polythene following vandalism and fire damage at New Year, with thanks to the generosity of our local community and of course Mrs Morrison, our wonderful ‘Gardening Granny’ and her team of volunteers. We look forward to growing tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers in our greenhouse in the Houston sun!

Duchal Nursery Parents, grandparents, aunties, uncles, cousins, siblings and former pupils all enjoyed a sun soaked Birkmyre Park watching the children enjoy every second of their sports day. Whether they have been at Duchal for 2 years or just a few weeks every child gave their all in a tremendous display. The obstacle race held no barriers, the sacks jumped, rolled and tumbled to the line, bean bags balanced and eggs remained in spoons as the children made their way to the finish line.

In true Duchal tradition the mummies and daddies races were highly competitive, the younger siblings basked in glory as they joined in and, a first for many years, the teachers joined in the fun, with a teachers race, proving that all the practice they had put in with the children had paid off for their training too!

St Columba’s Pipe Band have gone from strength to strength in recent years and May bore testament to just how far they have come. Pipe Major Gordon Bruce is extremely proud of his pipers and drummers, a group of young people whose dedication and hard work took them to the prestigious British Pipe Championships on the 18th of May. The band were thrilled to come 2nd Place and the drum corps took the coveted title of British Champions. St Columba’s also took 1st place in the Royal Scottish Pipe Band Association Competition, both as a band and as the best crops of drums.

Kilmacolm Playgroup A busy month at Playgroup saw the children looking at Health & Wellbeing, the children made their own fruit kebabs, fun fruit and vegetable crafts and tried lots of healthy yummy vegetables. They were very active with Morton Football sessions, trikes & bikes and the trampoline.

On the 18th of May, the School hosted an exhibition of the work of our community art evening class. Celebrated Scottish artist Robert Kelsey who opened the event, which gave artists from the community an opportunity to showcase and sell their work. A significant donation from every sale went to Orkidstudio, a charity which creates high quality, affordable buildings that significantly impact health and promote education, equality, and financial prosperity.

Our sincere thanks go Robert Kelsey and to very own art inspiration, Helen Mathie, who organised the exhibition and prepared her students for the novel experience of displaying and selling their artwork.

We moved onto The Farm topic with lots of fun on our tractors and in our farm shop, making lots of fantastic farm animals in craft. Space was our next topic and the children loved painting their own planets and making aliens in spaceships.

New Crossing Patroller Welcomed Following enquires from Bishopton parents to instate a school crossing patroller on Greenock Road, at the Lorimers Bar, MSP Derek Mackay and Cllr Natalie Don have been raising the issue with roads chiefs in Renfrewshire Council.

This is a busy spot for children crossing to access Bishopton Primary School and, following a visit to the location, the Council has now agreed to place a crossing patroller at the site. This should be in place within the next 2 weeks.

Bishopton Councillor Natalie Don said: “This part of the road has been something parents have been concerned about for a long time, I am pleased we have now managed to do something to help improve it.

“The Councillors who attended the visit with officials last week said they were in full agreement with the plans to install a crossing patroller, and I hope this cross-party support will continue.”

1st Houston & Crosslee Beavers Scouts The boys of the 1st Houston & Crosslee Beaver Colony decided to help support local vulnerable people by raising money to buy food for the Renfrewshire Foodbank. As part of the Community Involvement section of their ‘My World Challenge’ badge the boys collected 20p pieces in empty Smarties tubes and, including earlier fundraising projects, they raised the fantastic sum of over £325. The boys used the money to buy over 477kg of food for the foodbank which will provide the equivalent of 1,136 meals for vulnerable families in the area. During April 2018 to March 2019 Renfrewshire Foodbank provided 10,221 three-day emergency food parcels to local people, with 2,824 of these going to children so the boys’ efforts have made a significant contribution to the foodbank.

6 Reasons You’re Not Achieving Your Calorie Deficit Creating a calorie deficit is what it is ultimately all about for most people who are trying to lose weight and drop fat, either by eating a little less or exercising a bit more or doing both! But often, achieving a calorie deficit doesn’t always work every day. Here are 6 reasons that could be preventing you from staying in that deficit.

1. You think less is better. Too many people drop their calories too low for it to be sustainable long term. This short-term fix works, but only in the short term!

Dropping your calorie intake must be to a level that is sustainable long term!

2. You don’t do sustainable things. You try to sustain a non-realistic dietary and exercise regime. If you don’t think you can stick to a regime consistently then it probably isn’t right for you right now and you won’t enjoy it.

3. You give yourself binge days. You have cheat days and cheat meals. There is no need for this! You can still eat indulgent foods if you fit them into a diet plan, without feeling the need to take ‘days off’. Love your diet, don’t feel guilty about foods. If they fit your numbers, then it is working!

4. You ban foods that you enjoy. This will always result in failure. Cutting something completely out your diet that you enjoy is not sustainable!

5. Keep the foods you struggle with at arm’s length. Be aware of the foods that you tend to binge on. Don’t fill the cupboards with something you can’t stop yourself eating when opened. Keep a bit of distance from them – but remember point number 4!

6. You write things off when you make mistakes. Don’t give up if you have a bad couple of days! Get back on track and back onto your plan! Things will happen to take you off track, but it isn’t the end of the road! Tomorrow is another new day!

Their thanks also go to Bookers in Paisley who supported the boys by delivering the food straight to the foodbank and donating some drinks.

Funding for Community Sports The Aldi Scottish Sport Fund awards grants of up to £500 to eligible sports focused community groups based in the vicinity of an Aldi supermarket.

In 2017 the Fund awarded a total of £50,000 to 115 projects. The Fund operates on a regional basis in Scotland with each region having their own deadline. This call is for organisations in the west and south west regions of Scotland.

Organisations supported will be local community focused sports focused clubs, registered community amateur sports clubs, a school or educational organisation, a religious organisation, a Scout of Guide group, a charitable service fund of the Armed Forces or s Registered Community Interest Company.

Previous projects supported include the Glasgow Panthers Wheelchair Sports Club, which promotes Rugby 7’s to disabled and able-bodied players of all ages. With the help of the Aldi Scottish Sports Fund, the club were able to pay their hall hire fees for 10 weeks and set out a 5-year plan for the sport in Scotland. And also the Special Olympics Grampian Area Ski Group, which provides weekly ski instruction to athletes with learning disabilities. The club used their Aldi Scottish Sports Fund contribution to subsidise travel costs for the yearly regional skiing competition in Birmingham.

Rotary 10K run

Every Wednesday evening in June

It was a cool but sunny day on Sunday 19th May for the 156 starters (all abilities from serious runners to novices/joggers) who took part in the 2019 10K Run on hilly country lanes between Houston, Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm, starting at 1.00pm from Houston Public Park.

Johnstone Wheelers will shortly be introducing potential and new female members to bunch riding on the local roads around Renfrewshire. As this will be on the road, all riders should have a working road or hybrid type bike and be able to ride for at least 30 minutes without stopping. This is not a formally coached session. All riders are responsible for their own safety and for ensuring that their bike is in good working order. Don’t forget to bring a spare inner tube, pump and water bottle.

Remember to dress for the occasion!

Rides will be hosted on the evening of Wednesday 5th, 12th, 19th and 26th June. No need to register, just come along and meet us at the club room on Miller Street. From there we will head out for a 60-90 minute ride on local quiet roads, finishing at the club room with a cup of tea and a chat.

Bowling Club Annual Charity Day Sunday 14th July at John G. Fleming Bowling Club, Houston 64 ladies from across Renfrewshire will compete in a Ladies Rinks competition - however the bowls are secondary on the day and our primary focus is to raise as much money as possible for the St. Vincent’s Hospice.

As in previous years we will be having a large home baking sale and we would ask any members and friends who are skilled in this area to provide donations.

Our Junior Flag Challenge proved really popular and our junior coaching continues throughout June meaning our juniors are getting even more chance to enjoy practice and play more golf.

Talking of practice, our 300 yard long driving range has had a makeover with new targets and a defined short game area boasting complimentary balls.

Tuesday 23rd April was our Lady Captain v Vice Captain Day. It was a warm sunny day and was a Solheim Cup format. A fab day was had with many of the ladies getting dressed up in appropriate colours for their team. Our Vice Captain’s team (playing for USA) beat Lady Captains team (playing for Europe) by 51/2 to 41/2. We hope this is not an omen for September!

7th May was our Ladies Captain’s Charity day. There was an 18 hole Stableford competition run throughout the day and evening. Laura Hannah won the 18 hole competition with 42 points, followed by Nicky Stirrup with 37 points. Lesley Brown won the 9 hole with 18 points, closely followed by Anna Mercer with 17 points. Very well played Ladies ! We raised an amazing amount of £1336.00 for Rosemary’s chosen charity 50O miles. Grateful thanks to all who helped and contributed on the day.

Castle Semple Sailing Club On 11/12th May, Castle Semple Sailing Club was pleased to welcome back our friends sailing in the Scottish Sailability Challenger series.

We were lucky enough to have a lovely sunny weekend, but sadly not a lot of wind!

Since there were five visiting boats this year, one of our members needed a volunteer to sail his two Challengers back. I took up the ‘challenge’ and although having never sailed one before I can say, in all honesty, once there is a bit of wind they are great fun to sail.

Five races were planned over the two days. The first race proved interesting with the wind going from nothing to quite a good breeze and then totally changing direction, which resulted in a shortened course.

After a good lunch it was back to the ‘testing’ wind for a further two races, personally I enjoyed my investigation of the far side of the loch - making friends with the swans on a sunny afternoon. I had my picnic with me, luckily, and just took my time getting back!

With very little wind on Sunday the first two races started slowly and continued slowly although on the final race the wind did pick up and there was a decent race to the end. Thanks to Gillian Shearer for the photos and to everyone who helped to make this a successful weekend for the Club.

On the first week of our very popular coaching, 31 kids and 25 ladies battled the elements to master the art of chipping –some even in shorts! Our fantastic volunteer coaches work with both groups, so thanks go to Danny, Carolyn, Fiona, Marion and Suzanne and our own golfer extraordinaire – Wilma Leburn.

Another busy day at Old Ran with our junior medal competitions. Over 60 were out competing at various levels. Well done to them all and they were rewarded with some lovely sunshine too!

Over the bank holiday weekend Stewart Catering celebrated 10 years working in partnership with Old Ranfurly. Over 90 members and guests attended the first event which was a fun night with food and plenty of entertainment.

Following a quiz about the club staff everyone enjoyed a disco and raised over £600 for The Brightest Star Charity. Great friendship as well as great food, continued over the weekend with the final celebration of the new ‘pizza oven’ on Monday selling over 40 pizzas to a very full but happy membership.

Renfrewshire Golf Union Kilmacolm Golf Club On a beautiful sunny day once again the Renfrewshire Golf Union played their Seniors Championship on Wednesday 15th May at the picturesque Kilmacolm Golf Club.

Round of the day came from Donald Stewart of Bonnyton Golf Club with a net score of 64 playing off his 10 handicap which was enough to see Image: winner Donald Stewart with RGU Vice President – Lyall Campbell him crowned 2019 Seniors Champion.

With this score he won Division 1 by 3 shots from his nearest challenger. In division 2 - It was a close call with 3 players all scoring a net 66, Ron Peden – East Renfrewshire, Lachie Cunningham - Paisley and Colin McDowall – Port Glasgow with Ron winning on count back The best scratch score of the day came from Willie McMillan of Bonnyton G.C. with a score of 69 This is the fourth year that the RGU have successfully played this competition at “The Mini Gleneagles” in Renfrewshire and like the “Masters” in Augusta we hope we have found a permanent home for the event. The Renfrewshire Golf Union would like to thank Kilmacolm Golf Club for the use of their facilities to host this event, and to congratulate them on the condition of the course and the in house facilities provided.

East Renfrewshire Golf Club was the setting for the Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys Stroke Play Championship for 2019. The Caven Trophy was sponsored once again by Paisley based family run company Strathand Fire and Security and we thank them for their continued support of the event.

In the Boys Caven Trophy Roddy McAuley of Fereneze Golf Club was the winner of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Boys Stroke Play Championship with a Gross score of 73. Runner up was Rhys McIlroy of Elderslie Golf Club on 75. The lowest net score was won by Gregor Rawson – Ranfurly Castle with a net score of 68 playing of a handicap of 16. Birkmyre U15s Win West of Scotland Shield Cup Final The U15s saved one of their best performances of the year to the final day of the season, powering their way past a strong Whitecraigs side 61-26 to lift the trophy in the West Shield Cup Final.

Birkmyre were on top throughout the match and took an early lead after 5 minute when skipper, Rhu Hart, scored his first of what would prove to be a hat trick of tries from the young second row.

With only a further 3 minutes on the clock, centre Thomas McKeown powered home from inside the opposition 22. He then added a second try on 11 minutes with both scores converted by David Cruickshank giving the bears a 19-0 lead.

Next to score was Finlay Davidson. Having picked up the ball a few meters out from a ruck, he muscled his way over to score near the corner flag. Again, David Cruickshank added the extra points. Whitecraigs then got a score back however Birkmyre finished the half positively with a 5th try on the 25th minute. This time it was winger Adam Hannah, running over to touch down. The conversion was duly slotted over giving the home team a commanding 33-7 lead at the half.

Birkmyre came out of the traps flying again in the second half. Adam Hannah added his second try, a superb solo effort. Whitecraigs had been on the offensive and attempted a kick and chase. Adam chased back and secured a 22 drop out for the team. Thinking on his feet, he held onto the ball and took the 22 quickly himself. He chased his own kick, and having secured the ball, sprinted the length of the pitch to score under the posts. Having gained his breath back, he slotted over the conversion as well.

Whitecraigs did not let their heads go down and they responded with 2 tries deficit. However on 41 minutes, Rhu Hart pick up the ball at the base of a ruck, caught the defence napping and went over for his second try. On the 50th minute, he completed his hat trick with a similar, and equally impressive effort. Whitecraigs then scored again before Ali Dickson scored his only try of the game in the 56th minute with some typically direct & powerful running.

David Cruickshank slotted over all 3 of his conversions in the second half taking the final tally to 61-26.

It was a great way for the boys to sign off for the year and were very deserving Cup Final winners. Thanks go out to all the boys for their efforts, attitude, application & discipline all year as well as the coaches and parents for their support.

Ranfurly Castle Ladies The ladies friendly matches are under way and 6 ladies played a home game against Gourock on Sunday 5th May. The team consisted of several ladies who were playing in a match for the first time and they really enjoyed the friendly atmosphere of the event which resulted in a win for the Castle.

The Greenlees team sadly suffered a defeat in their first match at Douglas Park on 13th May. Two Charity Stableford events have been played recently raising funds for Marie Curie and Macmillan Cancer Care. A good turn out for both events and Jan Macnab was the victor on both occasions with Gillian Donaghy and Helen Abram runners up.

In the May Medal played on 1st May - Scratch winner Denise Cowan 81, Silver winner Helen Abram (21) 73, Bronze winner Joy McLeod (24) 76 On 3rd May there was a Fun Yellow ball team event. This is always an enjoyable stableford competition but playing with the yellow ball every 3rd hole can be a little stressful because if you loose the ball, you miss out on scoring double points for the rest of the round! The winning team consisted of Agnes Williamson, Gillian Donaghy and Morven Mcleod with a wonderful score of 72 points.

On 12th May the East Renfrewshire Golf Club hosted the Regional Medal Finals for the West of Scotland. The club representatives are selected from the 4 best medal scores in both Silver and Bronze Divisions during 2018 and Jan Macnab and Helen Abram represented Ranfurly Castle. They have both now qualified to play in the Grand Final which will be played over The Eden Course, St Andrews on Sunday 16th June. Congratulations to both and we wish them the very best of luck.

Birkmyre Rugby Club News Birkmyre U15s bring back a trophy from Holland [PHOTO: banner image on p45] The U15s returned home with silverware on Monday afternoon having finished 3rd in their age group at the Hilversum International Youth Festival in The Netherlands.

Having arrived on the Thursday, the tour party of 22 boys, 4 coaches and 14 parents enjoyed an evening then morning in Amsterdam.

Thereafter, preparations began for their first tour match on the Friday evening. The opposition, The Pickwick Players, based in the town of Deventer hosted the Kilmacolm based team and Birkmyre enjoyed a 56-7 victory.

On the Sunday, the squad headed to the nearby town of Hilversum to play in their annual festival which is in its 20th year. Birkmyre was the only Scottish side. The tournament attracted 85 participating teams from 7 to 18 year olds from 7 different countries from as far afield as South Africa Birkmyre played 4 x 20 minute matches winning two along the way. Their group was very competitive and due to a superior points’ difference, having won their first match against the hosts 26-0, they finished in 3rd spot. Wirral, who defeated Birkmyre in the group stage, made the final and played the winners of Pool A, Crosyceiliog from Wales, losing 19-0. After the match, two of the team, Sam Craig & Fin Gray, took to the stage with their bagpipes to entertain the players & crowd. Local Lads Win the Algarve Cup! Last month local lads, Alexander Smith (Bridge of Weir), Nicholas McCallum (Houston) and Sam McLachlan (Erskine) along with their team, Rangers Academy 2008s, won the Under 11s section of the prestigious Algarve Cup. This international tournament took place in Vila Real Santa Antonia in Portugal from 14th – 20th April.

Featured in the competition were teams from Europe, North America and Africa including, Benfica, Porto, Olympiakos and Lyon. The team won all their games, beating Porto in the semi-final and finally beating Dynamo Zagreb 7-5 in the final. Well done to the whole team. What a great result!
