It was this time last year that I reported on an application for the former Bull’s Garage site in Bridge of Weir. Plans for a retail outlet with cafe and parking along with retirement flats have been approved, so all we’re waiting for now is for work to commence. It’s very sad that the village lost the only local fuel station, but it will be good to see the transformation of the site in the coming months.

I’m delighted to report that Inverclyde Council have refused the application

by Gladman for the site at Knapps, Kilmacolm. The grounds the plans were refused on will be ammunition for the other proposed sites around the village, namely that greenbelt should be protected and that with a falling population in Inverclyde, there is little evidence that further housing is required in the area.

With applications for West of Quarry Drive and Planetreeyetts expected soon we hope the Council will keep these objections in mind. Kilmacolm Community Council report that Taylor-Wimpey will be holding a second public meeting on 23rd August in the Community Centre between 3pm and 8pm to present a further plan following the feedback from the first consultation.

And as we went to print, I saw a report that Inverclyde Planning Board were considering plans for a development of almost 50 houses at the Balrossie House site in Kilmacolm. The existing building to be converted into apartments, retaining some of the historic structure’s facades, and a further 49 houses in the grounds.

Cllr Derek Bibby reports that Renfrewshire Council has received notice from AWG Properties regarding a possible future planning application for a residential development at Barrhill Crescent, Kilbarchan. This event will take place at the Steeple Hall between 2pm and 7pm on Thursday 23rd August and Cllr Bibby encourages villagers to attend.

An application in principle has been lodged by Gladman for the land at Carsemeadow, Quarriers Village for less than 50 houses, reference no.

18/0190/IC. This is not the old children’s nursery, but instead is the area of land off the main road, opposite Peace Avenue. Due to the small quantity of houses proposed it is unlikely that there will be a consultation meeting and the decision will be made at the monthly planning board meeting in due course.

Roads: The bollards on the traffic island leaving Bridge of Weir for Kilmacolm have once again been flattened and have been temporarily replaced with traffic cones. These in turn have been thumped a couple of times and look rather sorry for themselves. It seems that the island is simply not obvious enough so perhaps something more robust could be considered when it’s being replaced.

Or maybe it should just be removed altogether?

There are to be more roadworks at Deafhillock, from the roundabout to the junction to the A737, and will take place from 28th July to 13th August, with the road closing from 8pm to 6am. While drivers are pretty fed up now with roadworks, at least these take place through the night to help minimise disruption to commuters.

Paisley’s weavers’ holiday celebrated at annual Sma’ Shot Day and Weave Festival Thousands turned out to take a trip ‘doon the watter’ to mark Paisley’s radical weavers at the annual Sma’ Shot Day and Weave Festival celebrations at the weekend.

The event attracted more than 12,000 people to the town to enjoy a diverse range of cultural performances and events including one of the world’s oldest workers’ festivals – Sma’ Shot Day. This year’s theme marked the weavers’ annual holiday where they would traditionally go on a trip to the coast and it proved to be particularly apt as the sun shone on Paisley giving a real holiday atmosphere.

Paisley’s radical history began as a result of the famous dispute between the local shawl weavers and manufacturers in the 19th century. The sma’ shot was a fine weft yarn, woven into Paisley shawls by the weavers, which they were not paid for. An agreement was finally reached to pay for the sma’ shot in 1856.

More than 450 costumed performers, artists, community groups and families took part in the Sma’ Shot parade led by the Charleston Drum – the traditional way of calling out the weavers for the annual festival.

Celebrating Inverclyde’s Community Champions People in Inverclyde are being urged to nominate deserving community groups to be honoured with the Queen’s Awards for Voluntary Service.

Lord-Lieutenant Guy Clark - the Queen’s representative in Inverclyde, East Renfrewshire and Renfrewshire - is calling for local people to put forward voluntary groups who deserve recognition for their outstanding work in their community.

“I know there must be many local organisations that would be worthy winners of this very special award.

“Voluntary groups make such a difference in their communities and make such a massive contribution to people’s lives. They do it selflessly and they deserve some public recognition.

“If you know of any deserving groups please get your nomination in by Friday 14th September 2018.”

The Award was introduced by the Queen in 2002 in celebration of her Golden Jubilee and ranks with the MBE for volunteer groups.

It recognises exceptional contributions made by voluntary groups who give up their time for their local communities.

Inverclyde Provost Martin Brennan said: “There are many groups in Inverclyde doing a sterling job in their communities, and this is the chance to show them that they are truly appreciated.

“Volunteering takes time and energy and although they don’t do it for the recognition, this award allows us to say a huge thank you to those who deserve it.

“If you can think of any voluntary group in Inverclyde worthy of this prestigious award, make sure you nominate them today.”

As part of the day’s events a Youth Poetry Slam took place at the Dooslan Stane stage where a number of young people shared their experiences through spoken word performances – carrying on the town’s rich heritage of activism.

This element of the day was tied into the wider Year of Young People 2018 programme which aims to give young people a stronger voice on issues which affect their lives, showcase their ideas and talents, and ultimately, create a more positive perception of them in society.

Osama Nadeem from Renfrewshire Youth Voice, said: “Being part of the parade helps to showcase young people’s involvement in the community and also highlight the many youth groups out there in the area.”

The fun-packed afternoon featured around 30 shows in Paisley’s historic town centre.

New Initiative Will Clean up Renfrewshire’s Roadsides Roadside litter is set to be tackled as the latest element of Renfrewshire’s growing Team Up to Clean Up campaign.

The latest strand of the campaign aims to deter drivers from throwing litter out their windows onto the roadside and pedestrians from failing to use litter bins.

A dedicated Rapid Response Team (RRT) has been set up to tackle the problem and will work to clear verges and pavements across the area of discarded litter.

Residents will be able to report areas of concern and issues will be assigned to the new RRT as part of their ongoing programme of work.

The new team will work in tandem with the current RRT who were expanded at the beginning of the campaign and carry out daily patrols across Renfrewshire, tackle issues of flytipping and work with local businesses to ensure they are disposing of their waste correctly.

Grant Roderickson, Roadside Litter RRT, said: “Unfortunately people tend to throw all sorts out of their car windows and we have to go out to clean up after them.

“We put out signs to warn motorists we are there but often drivers don’t slow down enough which can be one of the main dangers of this role.

“We’re working hard to pick up all the litter that is thrown out of cars, tackle flytipping on rural roads and really trying our best to keep Renfrewshire clean.”

Renfrewshire Council recently supported national environment charity Keep Scotland Beautiful’s Week of Action on roadside litter which asked motorists to ‘give their litter a lift’ and consider the local environment.

Councillor Cathy McEwan, Convener of Infrastructure, Land and Environment Policy Board, said: “Roadside litter has been a key issue I have wanted to tackle

as part of the campaign as it is damaging to the environment and a blight on the beautiful scenery we have in Renfrewshire.

“Drivers need to recognise the damage they are causing and that what might just be one piece of litter to them is actually causing a much bigger problem.

“Working at the side of a busy road can be dangerous and our new team have to undergo training to ensure their safety as they clear the roadsides of litter.

“Please take the time to think before you throw litter away incorrectly and instead keep it with you until you get home or until you make it to the nearest bin.

“Small changes can make a big difference and that is at the heart of our Team Up to Clean Up campaign.” £2.5million has been allocated to Renfrewshire’s Team Up to Clean Up campaign over the next five years to allow the continuation of an enhanced programme of gully cleaning, increased mechanical road sweeping, the replacement or removal of out of date street signage and an additional six community litter pickers.

The campaign also challenges the community to play their part and this has proved extremely successful with more than 120 community clean ups taking place throughout the area and more than 2100 volunteers taking part.

A number of high-profile businesses, including ThermoFisher, McDonalds and Diageo, have also engaged with the campaign and have undertaken litter picks of the local area with their staff.

Local heroes honoured

by Renfrewshire’s Provost Renfrewshire’s hidden stars have been given civic recognition for their work in the community by Renfrewshire’s Provost Lorraine Cameron.

Eight inspiring community members were rewarded with a Provost’s Distinction Certificate at a special ceremony in Paisley Town Hall.

The Distinction Certificates provide the Provost the opportunity to recognise community members who have came to her attention for the positive difference they have made to Renfrewshire.

Provost Cameron said: “One of the most satisfying parts of my role as Provost is being able to recognise those who make a real difference to the lives of those around them and make Renfrewshire a better place for us all to live.

“Every one of the award winners is deserving of the accolade for the positive work they do and I’m delighted to be able to give them the recognition they deserve.

The Distinction Certificate award winners are: Anne and John Bellshaw – What started as a one-off charity event in memory of Anne’s brother has turned into 22 years of daredevil challenges, race nights and raffles. Fundraising for MND Scotland and ACCORD Hospice, and with the support of family and friends, they have raised more than £132,000 for these two great causes.

Peter Stewart – A youthful 90 years old Peter is still raising money for charity, culminating in his latest exploit, a 165ft abseil off the Forth Road Bridge.

Following the loss of his wife, Peter has dedicated himself to a variety of different causes and challenges to make a difference to the lives of others.

Stephen Torrance – A long-time supporter of the Choose Life and SOBS group in Renfrewshire, Stephen has fundraised in the memory of his brother Vinny who took his own life in 2009. Hosting an annual golf tournament, Stephen has managed to raise not only money but much-needed awareness of the issue of male suicide.

Howwood Emergency Amateur Response Team (HEART) – This inspiring group of volunteers worked diligently within the local Howwood community during the severe weather earlier this year. They cleared local roads, visited elderly neighbours to ensure they were safe and well and ensured local school routes were safe for parents and children.

Rekz Afzal – A well-known community figure, Rekz has created a community fridge which allows people to buy essentials for those who may be in need.

He has also organised local music events with the proceeds going to the One Giant Leap programme which supports young adults with disabilities through music and art.

Brian McClure – Taxi driver Brian has been honoured for his quick thinking that saved the life of a elderly woman. Spotting that a car had crashed into a stationary car, Brian performed emergency CPR on the driver who had suffered a heart attack which helped save her life.

Margaret Beacom – A true community hero, Margaret has been looking after her neighbour through a long-term illness to ensure they are coping, have the essentials in the fridge and are able to make all appointments they need to, which has gone a long way to improving their quality of life.

Alongside the Distinction Certificates, community members can be rewarded through the Provost’s Community Awards in a variety of categories.

Nominations can be made for anyone who lives or works in Renfrewshire and the nomination period will open later in the year.

Hospice Worker Blazes Trail ACCORD Hospice is asking people to brave the heat and bare their soles to raise money by taking part in a firewalk on Saturday 29th September.

The event is being run by leading firewalk experts – Firewalk Scotland!

Eileen Brown, a member of the Housekeeping Team at ACCORD, is doing the firewalk in memory of her mum, Jean Pickett. Eileen, who has been at the Hospice for 18 months, admits that she was a little scared before she started working there: “I thought at first it would be all doom and gloom, but it is far from what I imagined. It is upbeat and there is a lot of laughter and cheer - I actually look forward to going to work. It’s a great place and I see first-hand how wonderful the Hospice is with patients and their families. Staff help to make patients feel at ease and give their families peace of mind” ACCORD Hospice is an independent charity giving free Specialist Palliative Medical and Nursing Care and support to people whose illness is causing physical pain and emotional distress and for whom curative treatment may no longer be appropriate. The Hospice cares for around 1,200 patients each year and needs to raise around £1.8 million annually.

There are already over 30 people signed up to do the Firewalk which takes place in the Hospice grounds at Morton Avenue, just off Hawkhead Road on Saturday 29th September. David McFadden, Senior Fundraiser at ACCORD is delighted with the response so far: “It’s fantastic to see so many people already signed up for our first ever firewalk!

With the help and support of the community, the individuals we look after are given the first class care they deserve. Do it for ACCORD and sign up to the Firewalk!”

Annual Art Exhibition This year our annual Art Exhibition is taking place in the Cedar suite, kindly donated by the Normandy Hotel. We are delighted to have over 60 artists exhibiting this year with a whole range of originals for you to buy from. The exhibition is running from Friday 31st August to Thursday 6th September inclusive and is open Monday to Friday from 12noon – 8pm daily, 12noon – 4pm Saturday and Sunday. Entry is free but there will be a collecting can available should you wish to make a donation. 50% of all sales made will come to ACCORD Hospice.

Each year the Art Exhibition raises thousands of pounds for the Hospice. ACCORD Hospice provides specialist Palliative care to those in Renfrewshire and parts of East Renfrewshire. We hope you will come along and have a look.

Our tremendous team that completed the Kiltwalk raised £5,700 with the generous match funding of the Hunter Foundation. These funds will help provide additional support to our referred families who receive individually tailored weekly home visits from one of our trained volunteers.

Families are referred usually by health visitors or social workers or self-referrals for reasons which include isolation, addiction, domestic abuse, mental health issues, disability, illness, lack of family support, bereavement and post-natal depression – or a combination of such issues.

Whilst the benefits to the family are clear and well documented, we should not underestimate the benefits to the volunteers too. We are the stepping stone for many of our previously unemployed volunteers to go on and find work or enter education. There are also instances of families that have been supported going on to become volunteers themselves – giving that support back providing a continuous strengthening of their community.

“Volunteering is at the very core of being a human. No one has made it through life without someone else’s help.”

Our next 8 session volunteer training course starts Tuesday 21st August and will run Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 10am - 1pm in our office in Paisley.

The course, whilst it covers everything you need to know, is very friendly and informal. There is no written work - and there is no exam at the end of it!!

Another option is to join us as a Trustee to help shape the future of our work with families. The minimum commitment as a Trustee is a few hours each month, to attend meetings or to engage in Board discussions via email and online forums. Further opportunities to get involved are possible too, so we can be flexible to suit individual motivations to volunteer.

Dancing through the Decades On Saturday the 15th of September at Pollokshaws Burgh Hall, Glasgow, G43 1NE, we are holding a Night of nostalgia with ‘Dancing through the Decades’ to help raise funds for people impacted by Huntington’s disease (HD). We expect the night to be a sell out, so to avoid disappointment, please purchase tickets £10 per person online.

From the groovy tunes of the swinging 60s to the funkadelic disco boogies of the 70s through to the motown sounds of the 80s, we will have something for everyone…. So, come along and have a night of dancing to some of your favourite yesteryear tunes. There will be a licensed bar, raffle and prizes for the best fancy dress costumes – so look out your flares, your ‘Peace and Love’ medallion, or your Day-Glo ankle warmers.

The funds raised on the night will go towards the work of Scottish Huntington’s Association, helping to support families living with HD through a network of specialist services.

S.I.Paisley - the Gift of Sight

Being able to see is something most of us take for granted, but in many countries of the world people suffer from eye conditions which are easily resolved if access is made available to the correct treatment.

Members of S.I.Paisley heard recently from Dr. Sadhu Gupta, a Consultant Ophthalmic Surgeon in Inverclyde, the husband of one of our members and a well known member of Gourock Rotary Club. Dr. Gupta has been involved in charitable work in this area since 1994 when he held his first overseas eye camp in Bangladesh. There he operated on the eyes of hundreds of many under-privileged and poor patients who otherwise would be unable to have such an operation. Subsequently he has carried out 18 or so such eye camps, operating on many thousands of people in the most remote and poor areas of the world including Ethiopia, India, Burma, Pakistan etc...

In this work he has been ably supported by Danny Chundoo, a fellow Rotarian.

Danny has worked as an alcohol addiction nurse and a clinical nurse manager in Greenock, and has been involved in organising and managing host country teams for many years.

Both men have received awards in recognition of their work in this field.

Live and learn certificate for new Paisley & District U3A After nine months of planning and hard work, Paisley & District’s U3A (University of the Third Age) representatives have now received a Certificate of Membership from Pam Jones, Chair of the Third Age Trust. The Renfrewshire-wide U3A is a newly established member and joins 26 other U3As in Scotland.

Proudly displaying the certificate, Paisley & District U3A Chair Kathleen O’Donnell said: “Approaching or reaching retirement gives people a chance to try new things. Our hardworking steering group decided to establish a Paisley & District U3A. We know that when you get older you’re more likely to have the free time to enjoy learning new skills. It’s also a great way to meet people who share similar interests.

“We offer later life education groups - all run by local volunteers. Our members choose the topics they want to learn more about. These sessions can range from conversational Spanish and art appreciation to architecture and local history.

We also have a programme of guest speakers who share their knowledge and expertise at our monthly meetings. These are held on the first Thursday of that month, from 2pm - 3.30pm, and members and friends can come and enjoy a tea or coffee beforehand.”

As well as the certificate presentations at the U3A All Scotland Assembly & AGM in East Kilbride Art Centre, delegates heard about Scottish Government research into social isolation and loneliness. Its 2018 consultation paper, ‘A Connected Scotland’, quotes the late Jo Cox, Member of Parliament as saying: “Young or old, loneliness doesn’t discriminate … it is something many of us could easily help with.” Paisley & District U3A may play its part to assist social connections among semi or retired individuals living in the Renfrewshire area.

So what is changing with the bins in Renfrewshire?

Approximately 30,000 properties, which includes tenements, maisonettes and high flats, will see no change to their general waste collection but the service will be tailored to allow these properties access to the new service if they require.

The BLUE bin will now be for paper and cardboard only and will be collected every four weeks (alternate fortnightly with the green bin).

There is no change to the BROWN food and garden waste bin, if you have one, which is still collected fortnightly

Impact resistant materials, initially used for astronaut helmet visors and space shuttle windshields, are now widely used as lightweight but durable spectacle lenses, and are particularly effective for eye protection in sport. Polycarbonate lenses, for example, are up to 10 times more impact resistant than standard plastic or glass lenses and they also offer further protection from UV light.

Eye protection should also be considered by all sports people, especially in certain high-risk sports. Thousands of children and adults suffer sports-related eye injuries each year, with squash and paintball accounting for a very large part of this group. Nearly all of these injuries could have been prevented if the proper protective eyewear had been worn. Years ago, there was some resistance by children to “looking funny” when they wore protective eyewear but today, sports goggles are an accepted part of everyday life, similar to the way bike helmets have

With an increased focus on natural and home treatments you might be surprised at some of the more popular teeth-whitening suggestions out there!

Strawberries, for instance, contain an enzyme called malic acid which it is claimed is a natural tooth whitener. Numerous natural health websites recommend mashing up a few strawberries, rubbing them on your teeth and leaving for 5 minutes before rinsing and brushing as usual.

Charcoal is a really popular ingredient in a variety of health and beauty uses at the moment and activated charcoal powder is said by some to absorb stains and bacteria, making teeth whiter. There are even charcoal toothpastes that are now widely available.

Baking Soda is also an ingredient in several whitening toothpastes due to its lightly abrasive qualities and brushing your teeth with baking soda is undoubtedly a good alternative if you do ever find yourself without any toothpaste.

Finally, Oil Pulling (the ancient Indian practice of swishing a tablespoon of coconut oil through your teeth) is another trend that has done the rounds and people who practice it today claim that it helps whiten their teeth.

I’m afraid, however, there is no real evidence to support the teeth-whitening properties of these natural treatments although some will certainly help to clean teeth - I have long been extolling the virtues of fibrous foods such as celery and apples and plain popping corn as “natural toothbrushes”.

The treatments are probably harmless enough used in moderation but the truth is they are unlikely to do much to whiten your teeth. As the Oral Health Foundation’s states: “It is important to understand that, in the long-term, the only way to get the white teeth many people desire is through professional whiting services provided by a dental professional.”

How to avoid Pension Scams Opportunities for Modern Apprentices

Young people hoping to join Inverclyde Council’s successful Modern Apprentice scheme have until Sunday 5th August to apply.

So, what should you look out for?

An alarming number of pension scams are being reported with some people losing their entire pension pots to fraudsters. The Pension Regulator, Action Fraud and others are urging you to beware of the risks of losing your retirement fund to pension fraud.

The Council is looking for committed young people to fill eight vacancies in business and administration.

Environment and Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for any young person to learn real skills and gain invaluable experience - and opportunity is everything in today’s job market.

“Modern Apprenticeships really can offer a head-start when it comes to employability and I hope as many young people as possible put themselves forward.”

As a Modern Apprentice, the young person holds ‘employed trainee status’, which means they are paid the appropriate MA rate for the job – earning while they are learning.

Inverclyde Council is one of the largest employers in the area and is inviting applications for a number of Modern Apprenticeship training opportunities, which will be advertised within the local press.

Young people aged between 16 and 19 and who live in Inverclyde are eligible to apply.

Check out your adviser – Check the FCA register to make sure your adviser is regulated. Google your adviser to see if there are any negative comments or concerns about scams and google maps to see the adviser’s office.

Temporary move for library Paisley Central Library will be moving to a temporary home in the town centre - ahead of a new state-of-the-art facility opening on the High Street.

The library has to leave its current home next to Paisley Museum in September when the building closes for a £42m revamp to turn the museum into an international-class destination.

Library provision will move to a new learning and cultural hub at 22 High Street by 2021, with a temporary library to be built next to the Lagoon leisure centre and due to open in January 2019.

The modular building will take over part of the facility’s south car park currently used by council staff - and will house the most popular books and services, plus some public access PCs. In the meantime, library users will be able to access the same services at Foxbar, Glenburn, Ferguslie and Ralston libraries, as well as a wide range of e-books.

A number of public-access PCs will be made available from September at 5 High Street to ensure jobseekers and others requiring internet access can continue to get online. The hugely-popular Bookbug sessions will move to the main Lagoon building until the end of the year until the temporary library is ready.

The heritage centre - where the public can access family and local history records - is set to decamp to a new home in Mile End Mill in Seedhill Road over the winter and will stay for four years until moving back into the museum when it reopens in 2022.

PAISLEY AND RENFREWSHIRE NORTH WASPI: I recently raised a Parliamentary Question to the DWP to find out whether the Secretary of State Esther McVey has met with the Women Against State Pension Inequality campaigners during her six months in office.

Disappointingly, the answer confirmed that she has not met with anyone from the WASPI campaign. This campaign affects approximately 3.8 million women across the UK who’ve had their state pension age changed without notice.

The Scottish Government has been raising this issue time and time again and has fought for the UK Government to rectify this and give the WASPI women the pension they rightfully deserve. This is a time sensitive issue and it’s time that the Minister hears their concerns for herself as well.

HELMS: Through a written parliamentary question I have learned that Paisley and Renfrewshire North had more solar panel installations from the discredited green energy company HELMS than any other constituency in Scotland.

HELMS went into liquidation in 2016 and since then, people throughout Scotland have complained that HELMS mis-sold them on the savings that they would make through having solar panels installed.

Affected households have been left with higher energy bills and not being able to sell their properties due to the fact that in some cases households were tied into a 25-year credit agreement with their energy suppliers – despite being told their solar panels were free.

I am currently investigating what recourse may be available for affected constituents. Anyone who has been mis-sold should get in touch with my office and we’ll try to help as much as possible.

The end of June and beginning of July marks the end of the old Rotary year and the start of the new with a handover to a new President, Officers and Convenors at the meeting on July 11th.

Summing up the 2017/18 Rotary year, Past President Peter Dickie commented that a particularly good session had been enjoyed by old members and new. There had been six big fundraising events – the BBQ and Disco, the Curry Night, the Burns Supper, the Musical Lunch, the 10K Run and the Charity Car Wash. Major donations totalling almost £8,000 had been made to Polio Plus, Funding Neuro, Water Aid, Rise Against Hunger, and 500 miles. Locally, £5,000 has been spent in support of Youth Services projects, support for Young Carers, the purchase of a mobility scooter and donations to community projects, including the village gardening groups.

Peter thanked Iain Robertson and Allan Watt who were standing down from their positions and all other officers and convenors for their work. He handed over the President’s chain of office to Andrew Macleman and welcomed him to the role of President for 2018/19.

Club Services/Membership David Fairbairn SPEAKER MEETINGS AT THE RIVER INN Wednesday 20th May – Roisin Eadie “My Journey to Mary’s Meals” Roisin Eadie, who is Head of Communications for Mary’s Meals UK, described her earlier career and how it had prepared her for what she regards as the ideal job. She went to Gryffe High School and started in journalism with the Paisley and Renfrewshire Gazette in 1991 covering Houston and Bridge of Weir. When moved to the Eastwood Mercury she had an exclusive faceto-face interview with Margaret Thatcher the day after she stepped down.

At the Greenock Telegraph Roisin found herself covering the busy Sheriff Court and enjoying the wit of the sheriffs. She held promoted posts at the Sunday Mail and then the Daily Record before moving to the Corporate Communications team at Glasgow Caledonian University where she found herself specialising in trying to keep negative stories out of the press. She stayed five years, latterly as Head of Communications, and whilst there met a team from Mary’s Meals. It was this meeting that focused Roisin’s mind on what she really wanted to do and she joined Mary’s Meals two years ago.

Wednesday 27th June – Jim Dorward “Railway issues” Every year the club looks forward to Jim’s latest talk on railway related topics.

Originally billed as a presentation on “The Scottish Sleepers”, this year Jim was somewhat “derailed” by the interest of members in a whole series of other current railway issues, all handled with great expertise and frankness: Caledonian Sleepers are due to get new rolling stock -70 new coaches with the first due to be delivered in October. The service is heavily subsidised by the Scottish Government - fares covering less than half of the real cost.

HS2 will bring benefits to Glasgow to London trains which will run at 220mph from Rugeley to Euston on the new HS2 line.

Driver controlled operation (without traditional guards) has become feasible with modern signalling and is widely used around the railway network but bitterly opposed in some regions.

The handing back of the East Coast Mainline franchise by Virgin/Stagecoach was, in Jim’s view, inevitable because of the poor performance of Network Rail Network Rail’s performance was also at fault in the more recent timetable debacle.

It is now very late on into the summer and the wildlife is as busy as ever on the reserve. We have been seeing lots of wonderful insects such as damselflies, butterflies, bees and ladybirds flying around. As well as these daytime flying insects, we are finding lots of moths in our moth trap.

It is a great time to get your camera out and take to some wildlife photography. If you fancy learning how to take your very own wildlife photographs, why not come along to our Wildlife Photography Workshop: Beginner Level on Saturday 11th August (10am – 1.30pm) and you will get some great shots in no time under the expert guidance of renowned wildlife photographer David Palmar.

Although they are small, bats are voracious in their appetite for moths, midges and mosquitoes! So instead of reaching for the insect repellent, perhaps put up a bat box! It has been known for a single pipistrelle to be able to consume up to 3,000 insects in a single night!

Local Woodland Creation Opportunity Regardless of your views on windfarm developments in Scotland, which often can be polarised, one thing is for sure - ongoing developments in the south of Scotland offer a huge potential funding stream for woodland creation.

This comes about due to the fact that many new windfarm developments are within existing upland forests and the planning system obliges developers to offset any losses in forest cover by undertaking “compensatory planting”.

This ensures that the Scottish Government’s forest expansion targets will not be undermined.

Eadha sees this as a great opportunity to divert some of this planting to Renfrewshire where it can be designed to deliver social, economic and environmental benefits, meeting both the needs of landowners and the wider community.

This could include some productive woodland but could also be a catalyst for native woodland expansion. We have already successfully delivered two woodland creation projects through this mechanism, including the planting of 10,000 native

trees in our Wardlaw C o m m u n i t y Woodland project near Dalry.

We are currently working with two major windfarm developers to help them secure planting sites and we would like to connect them to local landowners who may be interested. This could provide an attractive alternative to the forestry grant route, with no cost or liability to the landowner and a greater flexibility in design.

Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society Members visited Parklea Association Branching Out on the outskirts of Port Glasgow. This is a 3 acre garden on a site donated by the Finlaystone Estate.

Here there are herbaceous borders, an orchard, a picnic area and a woven willow wind break. A bridge crosses the lily pond and, beyond the perimeter, there is a walkway along the River Clyde. Raised borders grow leeks and root vegetables, and tomatoes, courgettes, melons and salad crops are ripened under glass. The produce is used in the cafe for soup and snacks for the staff, clients, volunteers and visitors.

There are several greenhouses in which thousands of plants are brought on in the Spring. Parklea is open Monday-Friday plus 4 Saturdays [end May/early June] for the sale of bedding and other plants. The money generated supports the charity’s programmes. Parklea is a project offering adults or children with special needs, or the long-term unemployed, a different experience in their art room or their garden. If people enjoy their time there, it can help find them a supported role in a similar environment.

During this warm and sunny period gardeners have been busy in their own gardens, and none more so than Clare Kennedy who supported Barnardo’s at Gardening Scotland. Here the charity won a Silver Gilt award for their pop-up garden. Clare then joined Angela Smith of the RHS at Hampton Court Flower Show and worked on The Entertaining Garden in the Lifestyle Garden category which won a Silver medal.

Our own Flower Show is scheduled for Saturday 25th August. Further information will be confirmed to members shortly. Non-members should look out for posters in local shops and around the village about the venue.

Spinal Injuries Scotland Parasport Celebration: Clients from SIS came down to Castle Semple on Wednesday 27th June for a fantastic day of accessible sport.

Project News Well this lovely dry hot spell has been fantastic, hasn’t it? It has however had an effect on our gulls’ chicks with many of them not making it. We only have two left on the Greenock Police Station roof, who have both now been colour ringed. Four of our other gulls have started their migration with two in the Republic of Ireland, one in Northern Ireland and one in Dumfries and Galloway. We have managed to get the rest of the tags out and had a few surprises with them.

One bird we caught in someone’s house where he goes every day to enjoy a dish of catfood! We still have some of our gulls returning to their nesting sites but the rest seem to have given up this year.

One gull, 15V:C, who was caught at Castle Semple, has decided to move to Strathclyde Country Park and we spotted him there on the 8th of July when we were out with the Clyde Ringing Group.

On another sad note unfortunately I have to report that we have lost Flyback. It looks like he hit the powerlines at the back of Lochwinnoch near Kaims Dam. We went up to look for him and found some of his remains and his colour ring but no sign of his tag so if anyone walking up there finds it please give us a shout. It has stopped transmitting otherwise it would be easy to find. It’s a shame that a bird that made it all the way to Morocco and back was killed by power lines a mile or so from his tagging site, but it goes to show the many dangers facing our birds. On a happier note our Barn Owl nestbox ringing has begun with seven chicks being ringed so far. We have a few more sites to do over the coming weeks but it looks like they are getting plenty of food.

Event News We have two free events planned for August. The first is ‘Gallivanting with Gulls’ on Saturday 11th August from 1pm - 2.30pm. This is a free guided walk down at Lunderston Bay where we will be looking out for gulls and other birds on the Clyde. The second is Sunday 12th August at Fairlie Bay entitled ‘Gulls, Glorious Gulls’ and we will be keeping an eye out for colour ringed gulls and other species. Pop down any time between 11am & 3pm.

Gull adoptions. Looking for that something different or are you interested in supporting our gull project? Gull adoption packs are £25, include sponsorship of one of the gulls, an adoption certificate, factsheet, monthly email updates, your name on our website and a fluffy gull to call your own. Volunteer with TnT: One of the project’s aims is to train volunteers in the use of our camera traps. We are looking for volunteers to use and monitor our camera traps for 3 month periods. All training will be provided and it is something that only requires a couple of hours a week to collect and go through the footage. Fancy it? Get in touch.

Colourful Kilmacolm

What’s On at Finlaystone in August Come and visit Finlaystone Country Estate, enjoy our woodland walks, play areas and gardens. Join our Rangers for fun events throughout the summer.

Gardens The walled garden in August can put on a spectacular display of colour and this year is no exception with the roses in particular putting on the best display in many years. Not to be forgotten are the hebe, hydrangea and buddleia in the café borders, which are also in full bloom.

Gardeners are often encouraged to sit back and admire their garden from time to time, and not feel obliged to rush about, dead-heading, pruning, weeding etc. We hope that as far as Colourful Kilmacolm displays are concerned, you will do likewise. Please take a moment to look about you when you are in the village and admire our containers and borders.

So this month, rather than report on our activities, which have mainly been watering, here are a few photos of our efforts. Check them out for real!

Also in the walled garden the espalier apples trained along the walls are heavily loaded with apples at this time of year, with harvesting beginning towards the end of next month. In the kitchen garden the soft fruit including raspberries, gooseberries and blueberries also look like cropping well this year.

Entering the “Smelly Garden” the visitor will see a mass of roses occupying the island bed. These produce a fantastic scent throughout the summer months, and growing underneath these are oregano, lavender and the strongly scented curry plant, all adding to the bewildering mix of scents in this small garden.

As always the gardener is happy to have volunteers helping in the garden particularly during the busy summer months.

Brighter Bridge Of Weir Summertime, And The Living Is Easy That particular song hasn’t been on the lips of Brighter Bridge of Weir’s volunteers so far this summer. Much as everyone has enjoyed the prolonged good weather, it has meant a lot more work for our wee group of stalwarts, regularly getting water to all of our street planters and barrier baskets. They’ve also had to water the various garden areas such as Torr Road and the Woodland Garden, which could usually get by on rainfall.

As well as all that, the team completed the fencing along the Woodland Garden on Main Street and freshened up the painted “stones and tyres” artwork in the Garden. It’s been worth it though - nice to see the flowers blooming in the sunshine and the freshly painted works, too.

To be fair, it hasn’t all been hard work. Some of our group recently met up with some of the newly-formed Bee Happy Houston, for coffee and a blether. They passed a pleasant couple of hours relaxing in the sunshine on Main Street, exchanging views and ideas. It’s encouraging for us to see that, since Brighter Bridge of Weir was formed eight years ago, similar groups are flourishing in many of the neighbouring towns and villages. So, all together now: “Summertime…”

history New Summer Heritage Walks for Paisley The Knapps Homestead

As ‘The Urban Historian’ Stephen Clancy has been successfully leading heritage walks around Paisley once or twice a month throughout the year looking at topics from Paisley’s Church Heritage to the textile heritage of the town.

An important relic from prehistoric times is located on a small plateau overlooking the loch at The Knapps, immediately to the east of Kilmacolm. It was extensively excavated in 1961-1962 by a team led by Frank Newall, the Renfrewshire County Archaeologist, who established a fascinating multi-stage history of settlement there.

Around 4800 years ago, during the Neolithic era of the Stone Age, settlers established a small homestead. The site was well-chosen having fresh water springs at each side making it an ideal location for a significant farm for settlers, animals and crops.

A circular defensive palisade about 23 metres in diameter surrounded the homestead and two smaller huts with a gated access. The main building was a well-built timber frame house. Despite this, its occupation lasted for only a few decades. It contained several hearths, so the house may have been destroyed by fire. Whether this was caused by an attack or accident, we shall never know!

View from the South Many years later during the Medieval Period of 14-15 century AD, a new homestead was built upon the remnants of the Stone Age original. The location remained ideal for a small farming community, containing a cattle yard, a byre, a flour store and a barn.

Finally around 400 years ago, new occupants of The Knapps were living inside a much-fortified stone enclosure. The homestead was around 27 metres in diameter and sustained a farm based on husbandry and stock rearing.

This could have been a perfect rural retreat but the solidity of the defensive boundaries suggests otherwise!

For the summer of 2018 two new regular Tuesday walks have been introduced to tell Paisley’s history to visitors and locals alike. Walks take place at either 10.30am or 1.30pm on alternate Tuesdays, all leaving from the front of Paisley Abbey, on Abbey Close.

Explore Paisley’s amazing history - from a hermit monk to the third richest pre-reformation Abbey in Scotland or from a small village to Scotland’s largest town, resting place of all the High Stewards of Scotland and birth place of the Royal Stewart Dynasty – Paisley has an unrivalled history to explore.

The two new walks have been titled Hidden Paisley and Hidden Paisley: The Textile Heritage. Hidden Paisley tells the story of the town from the arrival of Mirin in the 6th Century through to the development of the town we know today. Hidden Paisley: The Textile Heritage is an introduction to the range of textiles produced in Paisley and the surviving/ long forgotten buildings related to the industry.

Kilbarchan August 1918 Private David Brodie served in the 11th, 14th and finally, the 7th Argylls.

He had attested in Paisley on 3rd September 1914, and served in the 11th Argylls, 45 Brigade, 15th (Scottish) Division. Wounded in December 1915, he transferred to 14th Argylls, 120 Brigade, 40th Division. Probably drafted to 7th Argylls in April 1918. Wounded on 1st August at the Third Battle of Ypres, he died of wounds to the head, legs and right arm at Rouen, and is buried at St Sever Cemetery Extension, Rouen. Before the war he worked at Beardmore’s and was an athlete and member of the YMCA. Private Jack Buchanan served in the 11th, then 10th Argylls, 32nd Division.

Before he was called up, he worked at Cartside paper works. His record of service states that he was a fireman and unmarried. He was a member of the Rechabite Society. The family home was at 22 New Street. He was killed on 23rd August 1918, and probably buried where he fell. Records indicate that he was exhumed and reburied at Reference VH.1, Heath Cemetery, Harbonnieres, east of Villers-Bretonneux.

Private Duncan MacArthur served in the 9th (Glasgow Highlanders) Battalion Highland Light Infantry, 100th Brigade, 33rd Division. In 1901, at the age of 15, he worked a paper calendar machine, and in 1911 he was a packer in a paper mill. He had been born in Govan, but his father came from Kilbarchan, and his younger siblings were born there too. He was 33 years old when he was killed on 25th August 1918. He has no known grave and his name is on Panels 9 and 10 on the Vis-en-Artois Memorial, south-east of Arras.

Supreme Sacrifice Bridge of Weir and the Great War 100 years ago this month – August 1918 Private Robert Millar, 5th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders Corporal William Smart Kerr, 1/7th Black Watch Lieutenant John Ritchie Johnstone, 244 Squadron, Royal Air Force August marked the start of the major Allied counter-attack on a German Army weakened and over-extended after its narrow failure to win the war through its Spring Offensive. The series of Allied counterattacks and the push towards and through the Hindenburg Line was to become known as “The Hundred Days Offensive”, an aggressive strategy promoted strongly

by Haig despite Lloyd George preferring to wait till 1919 when US forces could play a bigger part.

The ‘100 Days’ is usually reckoned to begin on 8th August 1918, but before that the successes of France’s General Mangin in pushing back German forces in the Marne Salient were a taste of successes to come. Helping him were several British Divisions deployed by the Unified Command under Foch, including the 34th, in which Robert Millar, 5th Argylls, was serving.

On 1st August, an attack on Hill 158 near Beugneux was launched, the hill being taken at the second attempt. It was described as a “good day” in official histories. Not so good for the battalion’s 4 officers and 33 other ranks, including Robert Millar, who were killed. Robert, 24, had worked for his father John’s carting business, the only son in a family of seven living in Broomward near the Clydesdale leather works.

Further north a few weeks later, British forces were attacking another German salient near Arras. William Kerr had been one of Bridge of Weir’s postmen Robert Millar since 1913. He volunteered early, serving in France from July 1915. By 1918 he was a Corporal in the 1/7th Black Watch attached to 51st (Highland) Division. On 24th August his battalion formed the right flank of a successful attack on Pippin Trench a step towards the objective of capturing Greenland Hill. The Germans were now retreating and fired off as much stockpiled artillery as they could. The Black Watch history says, “The area round Greenland Hill was heavily shelled by day and night with “mustard gas” shells, which caused a good many casualties.” William Kerr was one of those gassed, dying a few days later in a Casualty Clearing Station.

Ritchie Johnstone was one of many young men enthralled by the prospect of flying and when the war began he abandoned his law studies in Glasgow and became a cadet in the Royal Flying Corps, Farnborough. He qualified as a pilot in February 1918, upgrading to lieutenant (at 19 years old) when the RAF was formed on 1st April 1918. In July he was sent to Bangor to fly U-boat patrols in Airco DH6 aircraft, a biplane nicknamed the ‘flying coffin’ by some (due to its shape, not its reliability). He flew just four sorties, about 7 or 8 flying hours, and on 14th August his solo dawn patrol was his last. It was assumed he ditched somewhere off the coast of Wales. Ritchie’s parents had moved to Rocklea, Bridge of Weir in 1918, becoming members of Ranfurly United Free Church, whose memorial tablet records Ritchie as a ‘son of the congregation’.

Kilmacolm Camera Club During the closed season, members have enjoyed some excellent outings to the Edinburgh Butterfly and Insect World, and the Isle of May, in the Firth of Forth.

At Butterfly World, once we, and the camera lenses, had stopped perspiring in the tropical 40 degree heat, there were wonderful opportunities to shoot butterflies, moths and pupae. Some of the colours were amazing.

The Isle of May gave us a chance to get close up to the puffins, razorbills and guillemots. The feathered inhabitants have probably met more photographers than we have! I’m sure one puffin shook its head in disbelief at my choice of shutter speed and aperture! Later, after a world-class fish supper at Anstruther, we explored the attractive harbours along the Fife coast. A very rewarding trip!

Unique Garments in Church Exhibition

A special exhibition called “Gethsemane Garments” will be staged at St Mary’s Scottish Episcopal Church, Bridge of Weir, - the Little White Church in the Wood - as part of St Mary’s Annual Festival of Faith and the Arts, from Sunday 9th till Sunday 16th September.

The Gethsemane Garments are a series of four unique robes exploring hope, and suffering in the world.

Cllr James MacLaren As we continue to enjoy good weather, sooner or later the weather will break and we will have some heavy rainfall. The number of blocked gullies throughout my ward concerns me. Because of potholes and poor surfaces, grit at the side of the road will find its way into the drains and gullies which will block even more gullies.

Blocked gullies cause issues of flooding, erosion of roads and pavements, and hazards for cyclists and pedestrians.

From 16th July 2018 vans, pickups, mini buses and cars towing a trailer will require to apply for a permit to use the house hold waste recycling centres. Go to the website www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/hwrc the day before you visit the centre. I think we will see an increase in fly tipping in the countryside because of this.

Changes are planned for your bin collections later this year. Residents will get a new green wheelie bin, for plastics, cans and glass and the blue bin will then be for paper and cardboard only. The grey general waste bin will then be collected every three weeks. There is no change to the brown food and garden bin. I will bring you an update on this but it looks confused at present.

I have been researching my Bridge of Weir family for about 18 years now. I visited Bridge of Weir in 2004; however, I was only there for about 3 hours on a Sunday.

Here we are in August nearing the start of another school year. Exam results will shortly be announced - send one of our Congratulation Cards to show your delight.

I went to St. Fillan’s church yard but I wasn’t able to find any headstones of family members. While we were there my husband and I met a very nice gentleman. He went home,and came back with a booklet of St. Fillan’s 150th anniversary for me. My great-great-grandfather Thomas McKenna is listed in the booklet. The booklet also has a photo of my grandmother Margaret’s cousin, Jean Higgins.

I have been able to obtain photos of some of my family’s baptismal records. So happy to have them. Unfortunately, my search has now come to a standstill.

Coming soon to The Bridge - this is the time of year we start to order our goods for Christmas and New Year! We are again indebted to the invaluable assistance of Paisley Colour Photographic Club as we await the first draft from the printer of our 2019 Local Calendar. The A4 sized calendar incorporates twelve colourful photographs of scenes and landmarks around Bridge of Weir and district along with a diary section to note all your important dates. The calendar will be available for sale in The Bridge from mid September.

I’m looking to find photos of my grandmother’s family. And, possibly family stories that I can share with my daughter, my grand-daughters and great-granddaughter when she is old enough. By writing this I am hoping one of my distant cousins will recognize one of the photos shown, or one of the surnames below.

Similarly, The Bridge’s very own packs of Christmas cards designed by local artist, Alison Bannerman, are also at the printing stage. These will be available for purchase in October. We shall also have a selection of other Christmas cards on sale, including the popular ‘Greetings from Bridge of Weir’ cards.

Interested in films - pick up our printed programme of films to be shown in The Bridge on a fortnightly basis from August to December.

As always we wish to thank our dedicated team of staff and volunteers who, through their commitment, enable The Post Office and Bridge Community Centre to serve the village.

Bridge of Weir Senior Citizens Association The Senior Citizens had a very successful trip to Dundee and Broughty Ferry in May. The weather was fair and everyone enjoyed it. We held an Afternoon Tea during Gala Week as part of the festival celebrations. It was well attended and we raised the sum of £151. We were given vouchers for £50 for the Co-op from the Festival Committee and the first prize of £30 was won by Mrs. Rena McAllister. The second prize of £20 was won by Mrs. Agnes McKechan. Thanks to all who supported us.

We restart our meetings on the Wednesday 26th September in the Cargill Hall at 7.15pm. An interesting syllabus is being prepared at the moment and we look forward to welcoming members and friends. Membershp fee is £7.

My grandmother Margaret McKenna was born in Bridge of Weir in 1882. Her parents were John Mckenna and Catherine Higgins. My understanding is that she lived on Main Street in Bridge of Weir. She attended school and church at St. Fillan’s RC Church. I believe the two stained glass windows in the church dedicated to Peter and John Higgins, are my grandmother’s cousins.

Grandma Margaret married Hugh Cameron in 1902. He lived at Bridge End Cottage in Kilbarchan. Hugh made golf clubs for a living. Margaret and Hugh had a daughter Catherine (Kate) Cameron in 1903.

Margaret and Hugh both went to Canada in 1904; however, they went separately. Baby Kate was left behind. She was raised first by Margaret’s parents and then by her Aunt Catherine McKenna (photo shown) and Catherine’s husband John Timoney.

Catherine (McKenna) Timoney died in 1963 at Bendal Cottages, Bridge of Weir.

Baby Kate married James Beattie.

Kate (Cameron) Beattie (photo shown) passed away in 1969 at 16 Lock Road, Bridge of Weir.

Margaret and Hugh’s family surnames are: Beattie, Bradley, Cameron, Gallacher, Higgins, McCambridge, McKenna, Noon, Timoney, Trainor.

I do have a photo of Peter Trainor born 1837 that I would be happy to share with anyone who is interested.

If you have any information regarding my family that you would like to share, it would be most welcomed.

I presented the conclusions of the Hearing held in Greenock Town Hall with regard to the Gladman housing application at Knapps and North Dennistoun to the full Inverclyde Council.

After comments, I moved refusal and this was unanimously agreed. Gladman have now been advised of this decision and we have as yet had no indication of an appeal. Any appeal would be to the Scottish Government and would be robustly defended by Inverclyde Council with hopefully contributions from the professional Kilmacolm Civic Trust and Community Council. The final decision then moves out of our hands.

The Planning Application by Gladman for Quarriers Village was lodged on the 3rd July. With it being less than 50 houses it is likely that a hearing may not be necessary and given the anticipated objections the determination will be by the monthly Planning Board. I cannot comment on the merits or otherwise of the application but acknowledge the professionalism of the residents action group, Protect Quarriers Village. The applications for West of Quarry Drive and Planetreeyetts are expected soon.

I was delighted to sponsor Colourful Kilmacolm’s successful application for grant funding through the Council. The volunteers do a superb job all over the village and are a lesson to the small minority who only moan and do nothing. The bank at the Pullman is a delight of colour.

The partial surfacing and lining of Lochwinnoch Road has been completed and we await the completion of the building at the Institute to complete the particularly poor section at the Cross. Many have complained about the disturbance and lack of alacrity in the completion of the flats and the larger CO-OP. Planning law dictates that as long as a project is started within 3 years there is then no time limit on its completion. Something worth looking at.

We have purchased a brand new fleet of 5 snow ploughs. Great to see them arriving in the sunshine! This is vital for the village as the A761 and B788 (high road) are priority routes. Unless you have Canadian style snow blowing equipment nothing could have coped with the snow on the high road caused by drifting this winter. I hope we will continue to use local farmers for snow clearing as you can guarantee they will be out early.

I serve as a director of the Kilmacolm Heritage Gallery and am delighted with its outcome. Thanks to Chairman Jim Wood for concept and product and Helen Calvert, Chair of the Cargill, for facilitating the exhibition space. The Cargill goes from strength to strength and again we see volunteers in the village giving of their time to serve on the Board.

The St Columba’s prize givings had two contrasting but quite inspirational guests of honour. Ewan Aitken CEO of the Cyrenians and former Edinburgh Councillor and Minister, dramatically demonstrated the merits of acknowledging those less well off and disadvantaged in society. His message on rough sleepers was a lesson for all. Chris Van der Kuyl the Chairman of Entrepreneurial Scotland and of 4J Studios the video game developer, emphasised that failing was not the end of the world and that you had to pick yourself up and go again. I now know what Minecraft is.

We receive a monthly report from the quite excellent Community Policeman, Constable Jamieson. The latest saw 3 crimes in the village in May and continued monitoring by Traffic Police of speeding.

Kilmacolm Bridge Club

Kilmacolm Bridge Club resumes play on Monday 3rd September. We meet in the New Community Centre and play commences at 7.10pm. The Club is a member of the Scottish Bridge Union with a team playing in the Renfrewshire Bridge League. We welcome new members to the Club and during the first three weeks of September you are invited to come along as playing guests and check out the competitive but friendly play of duplicate bridge together. Kilmacolm Community Council Kilmacolm Community Council Meeting 26th June Crime: PC Jamieson introduced PC Kirsty Dominic as his new partner meaning that the village had its full quota of beat officers. He reported that there had been 3 crimes committed in the previous month which included 2 thefts – one of which was a domestic theft within the home; and a dangerous driving offence. In answer to a question he stated that the monitoring of speed through the village would continue.

Planning Applications: There were 8 planning applications considered and an objection was raised regarding one of them. The chair would write to the planning officer regarding this application.

Pre-determination Meeting: The chair stated that the outcome of the predetermination was that the planning board unanimously rejected the Gladman Planning Application for the Knapps and North Denniston and that it was expected that the full council would reject it at a council meeting on 28th June.

(This subsequently did happen).

Planetreeyetts: The chair informed the meeting that Taylor-Wimpey had held a public consultation meeting for a proposed residential development at Planetreeyetts in Kilmacolm on Thursday 21st June where some outline plans were put to the public. They will hold a second public meeting on 23rd August in the Community Centre between 3pm and 8pm to present a further plan following the feedback from the first consultation.

Council Vacancy: The chair stated that there was a vacancy on the council following the resignation of one member. A separate notice has been submitted to The Advertizer for inclusion in the August edition.

Heart Stroke Training: Two sessions of training were held in the community centre on 19th June. Over thirty people attended and a second set of training has been set up for September.

Kilmacolm Twinning Society: The Kilmacolm Twinning Society requested some financial assistance from the Community Council to send some delegates to Merignies to attend a celebration on the weekend of 8th September. The chair pointed out that the community council did not have the funds to do this but would ascertain whether any funds could be forthcoming from Inverclyde Council. kilmacolm & quarriers

Kilmacolm Community Council Vacancy Due to the resignation of a councillor on the Kilmacolm Community Council there exists a vacancy which we would like to fill.

The general purpose of the Community Council is to act as a voice for their local area. This will involve them in articulating the views and concerns of local people in their area on a wide range of issues of public concern and make representation to Inverclyde Council, other public bodies and private agencies on matters within their sphere of interest. Community Councils have a statutory right to be consulted on planning applications; licensing matters and any other matters that have been agreed jointly between the community council, Inverclyde Council and other public sector and private agencies.

The minimum age to stand for election as a councillor is 16 years and qualification for membership is by residency within the Kilmacolm Community Council area which includes Kilmacolm and Quarriers Villages and surrounds. Candidates must also be named on the electoral register for Kilmacolm and Quarriers.

Angel Voices 5th Year Celebration!

In June the Choir held a Grand Concert to celebrate five years of singing together.

The Rt Rev Dr Gregor Duncan, Bishop of Glasgow & Galloway was guest of honour as he blessed the new choir at its inauguration in 2013 and has kept in touch ever since.

The Choir is taught by professional musicians and sings all kinds of music.

Rehearsals start again at the beginning of September in St Fillan’s Church Hall, Moss Road, Kilmacolm on Fridays at 6pm for Junior Choir (5-7years) and 6.30pm7.30pm rehearsal for Senior Choir - Voices+ New members of all ages are very welcome to come along for a couple of taster sessions.

Kilmacolm Physiotherapy Clinic Changes Hands After 30 years of helping other bodies and minds recover from injury or illness, it’s time to let my own recover.

As from 1st September 2018 I am handing over the reins of my Clinic to daughter Nicola and Son-in-Law Graeme Watson.

Nicola is no stranger to Kilmacolm Physiotherapy Clinic having stepped in, on her return from working in New Zealand 12 years ago, to run the clinic for 1 year as I recovered from cancer treatment. Graeme has worked in the Clinic as a locum for the past 3 years. Between them they have a wide range of skills and specialities, and I have no doubt they will be a formidable team as they continue the work I started all those years ago.

I thank you for the loyalty you have shown over the past 30 years, and if I have given relief from pain, hope in recovery and strength in adversity to any of you, then my job has been done.

Our new season begins on Tuesday 4th September.

We meet from 7.30pm - 9.30pm in the small hall of St Columba Church, Kilmacolm. We sing a variety of music from classical to modern and hold a concert at Christmas and in the Spring. There are no auditions for our choir but is does help if you can hold a note! Our conductor and director is Christopher Barr, who also conducts Strathaven Choral Society. Our programme for this season includes Faure’s Requiem and the Vivaldi Gloria. We will be singing some Chilcott songs at the OK Fest in Kilmacolm in September.

We would welcome new members in the choir. If you enjoy singing and would like to give it a try please come along. Tuesday 11th September will be an OPEN NIGHT and all are welcome.

New funds to the fore at Kilbarchan visit Residents in Renfrewshire’s villages have a unique opportunity to shape their own place, according to Renfrewshire Council Leader Iain Nicolson.

Kilmacolm Bridge Club Summer Duplicate

If you would like to play Bridge during the summer months why not come along to the Kilmacolm Community Centre on Monday evenings? Starting on 7th May at 7pm for a 7.15pm start

They discussed a range of new funds set out in the Council’s 2018 budget which will give local communities the opportunity to lead projects that matter most to them.

A £1.5million Community Empowerment Fund is now open, supporting community members to take ownership of assets such as a community hub or sports facility in their area.

And a £370,000 Villages Investment Fund and £1.5million Green Spaces, Parks and Play Areas Fund are being rolled out later this year.

Local groups are also benefiting from changes behind the scenes to create a single point of contact for information and assistance.

“We have committed dedicated funds to give residents in our villages and towns the chance to make things happen within their local communities,” said Councillor Nicolson. “These funds can act as the catalyst for our talented thriving community groups to drive positive action on their doorstep. We want to encourage groups to lead grass roots activity and are here to support smaller projects too.

“There was a positive response from members of Kilbarchan Community Council to these new opportunities and they agreed with our approach to develop a partnership approach with community groups.

“It can sometimes be difficult to know who to contact at the Council and that’s why we’ve simplified the process ensuring people can access the support we offer as easily as possible.”

There was further discussion on the review of Local Area Committees, restructuring them to give community delegates a greater say, and on possible traffic calming measures for the village.

The visit to Kilbarchan follows meetings with Inchinnan, Bishopton and Paisley North Community Councils in recent months.

Councillor Nicolson added: “I have always said that I want to meet community groups and organisations who share in our ambition to make Renfrewshire a great place to live, visit, work and invest in.

“These community council visits give me an important opportunity to hear firsthand about what’s happening across Renfrewshire, to share best practise and highlight new opportunities. We are listening to what our communities have to say and want to help them to achieve our shared goals.

Damon Scott, Chair, Kilbarchan Community Council, said: “Iain’s interest and attendance at the Kilbarchan Community Council was much appreciated. We were excited to hear of plans to provide more support to local communities via community empowerment.

“We very much believe an identity and pride in place is at the heart of every successful community and this was also highlighted as a focus for the partnership approach in the future. We look forward to working with the council and other partners to continue to make Kilbarchan an even better place to live, work and visit.”

Would you know what to do in an Emergency?

One of the most enjoyable things about being a local Councillor is attending the various gala days and fetes in my ward, and one of these happens to be the annual Kilbarchan Agricultural Show. I think Renfrewshire Council do some things well but one of the things they really struggle with is realising that Paisley is not the centre of the universe, important as it is. Therefore I always try and attend the Agricultural Show to show support for my farming constituents, who like the rest of us are facing challenging times. For anyone who is in farming, or who wishes to enter this important industry I would advise them that the Scottish Government provides grants such as the Small Farms Grant Scheme which can provide up to £25,000 over two years for items such as new buildings. Attending Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch, and Howwood Community Councils over the months there has been a recognition that the battle by Johnstone Community Council and the Johnstone Business Consortium to stop the controversial plan

by Renfrewshire Council to introduce car parking charges in Johnstone will not just have implications for the town alone. Increasingly as the High Street banks such as RBS are deserting town centres the point has been well made to me by my village constituents that parking charges in Johnstone may reduce bank footfall for the existing branches, and therefore also penalise villagers who have small businesses or who simply prefer to deal face to face, as I do myself to be honest.

Therefore, at the last full council meeting I moved a motion calling on the Council to take the final decision on this ill judged policy at a full council meeting rather than the Environment Board, on a technicality I needed two thirds of all Cllrs support, and received 24 votes for my motion, a simple majority but 5 less than I required. My fight will go on as car parking charges killed Paisley and will do the same to Johnstone if left unchallenged.

My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7.30pm, and my advice surgery in Howwood is at 6.30pm on the 4th Wednesday of the month, and then in Lochwinnoch on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm, all excluding July and December. Renfrewshire Council has received notice from AWG properties in regard to a possible future planning application for a residential development at Barrhill Crescent Kilbarchan. This notice is not a formal planning application, and there is a requirement for the applicant to hold a public consultation event to enable members of the public to hear and see the proposals, and to ask questions, and raise issues and concerns. This event will take place at the Steeple Hall between 2pm and 7pm on Thursday 23rd August. I will be going along to the event and would urge villagers to attend.

The prospect of residents from Kilbarchan, Howwood and Lochwinnoch paying parking charges when visiting Johnstone still looms large, despite almost universal opposition to the proposals. A presentation of the findings of the impact assessment by officers of the council was made to the public at the end of June, however it was clear that the anger at these proposals remains unabated, particularly as the assessment costing over £40,000 told us nothing new .

This public mood will not have been helped by the refusal of the current administration to allow these proposals to be reconsidered by all 43 councillors at a full council meeting, rather than at the Infrastructure and Environment Board, which will meet at the end of August. As far as I am concerned given the level of anger and opposition, the proposals should be taken off the table forthwith.

I was dismayed to learn that the last bus from Johnstone to Howwood and Lochwinnoch has been withdrawn by McGills on weeknights Monday to Thursday.

This is yet another example of the needs of the transport needs in the villages being overlooked. I will continue to make the point in the strongest possible terms to McGills and SPT, that Howwood and Lochwinnoch should have an increase in bus services, and not further reductions.

I hope that readers have been enjoying the wonderful weather we have been having during the summer, and that this will be the case for Johnstone Gala Day which will be held on Sunday 26th August.

Kilbarchan Old Library Centre Like many of our village facilities, the Old Library Centre has provided a meaningful source of meeting place since it opened it’s doors for business in 2003.

We now find that a new group of volunteers is required to form a committee to run the business.

The Chairman, Ann Grieve, retired at the end of June. Ann has been involved – along with her late husband Ian – since its inception and the work she has done in this capacity is immeasurable, An active committee is required to keep the Centre in existence, If you are interested and can help in any way you are invited to attend a meeting in the Centre on Thursday 23rd August at 7.30pm. Leisure Classes in Kilbarchan Guide Centre will start back during the week beginning 20th August after the summer break. If you have always wanted to try a fitness, yoga or art class then you can be assured of a friendly welcome from our members.

On Tuesday mornings Jane leads a tone and shape fitness class from 9.30am till 10.30am followed by a slower paced class to improve the balance and flexibility of the more mature mover – from 10.40am till 11.40am.

Our Thursday morning Hatha Yoga class with Jacqueline meets from 10am – 11am.

Art Classes are held on Monday afternoon and then on both Friday morning and afternoon.

These relaxed and informal classes, for amateurs, are led by Ian Richardson (B.A.Hons) who will provide support and encouragement to help develop skills in your own chosen subject and medium. Beginners can follow a set 12-week course introducing them to the basics of drawing and painting. More experienced artists can further develop their skills with instruction from Ian. Cllr Bill Binks Despite this being the recess month (July) there are still many issues that keep raising their heads.

Lochwinnoch – Trees and hedges overgrowing the footpath along the A760 from Lochwinnoch to the Roundhead Roundabout on the A737 is an annual problem with walkers having to step into the dangerous road to avoid being slapped in the face by branches. Having raised this issue, I am assured that the Roads Inspector from Renfrewshire Council will ensure a full assessment is carried out in accordance with the Roads (Scotland) Act 1984. If the vegetation requires attention, a notice will be served on the land owner for this to be cut back to the property edge. The same Inspector will also carry out a survey on the overgrown trees in Speirs Road which are obscuring the street lights. I have raised concerns, pointed out to me from residents, about the condition of some pavements in Lochwinnoch. The condition is such that elderly people that use mechanical walkers cannot navigate around the potholes etc. An inspection is to be carried out in the next few weeks to assess the hotspots.

Kilbarchan – Concern has been raised by a number of residents about the proposal (Planning Application 18/0466/PP) to build two dwelling houses with detached garages on the Meadowbank site on New Street. At this point in time elected members have no say in the matter but we will be keeping an eye on the situation and passing on your concerns. Further concerns were raised about speeding in Troubridge Avenue, where two cats have been run over, leading to Troubridge Crescent. I have put in a request for action with the possibility of erecting ‘20 is Plenty’ signs and replacing the ‘20 is Plenty’ sign in Dalhousie Road. An immediate inspection has been promised.

Howwood – I know it has been a long time, but I have just received an apologetic response, from the Land Services Manager, to my query about the treatment of the boundary fence on the Park side of the Midton Meadows Development site.

I am assured that a meeting will be arranged with his contacts to discuss the boundary treatment between the park and the development after Monday 23rd July (because of holidays).

Eilidh Grant Album Launch Multi award winning, international folk singer, Eilidh Grant, is all set to launch her latest solo album ‘Charms of Nature’ on the 22nd of September at the Carrick Centre in Houston at 7pm.

Charms of Nature follows the award winning album Masks and Smiles, and this time Eilidh has chosen to release an album that embraces her passion for traditional Scottish song, in particular Robert Burns. Classics such as Ae Fond Kiss, My Love is Like a Red Red Rose and Westlin Winds are beautifully accompanied by many of Scotland’s traditional songs.

This albums journey began a few years ago in the picturesque area of the Yarrow Valley in the Scottish Borders, however, since moving to Houston a year ago Eilidh was keen to keep things local for the album launch. Eilidh says “Getting to work with such great musicians has been a privilege and I am looking forward to touring Scotland and Europe with this album.”

Gleniffer Singers in concert at Houston Kirk Friday 28th September Founded in 1967, the Gleniffer Singers is a Paisley-based ladies choir that sing a wide range of different styles from traditional, folk and classical to modern, musicals and gospel. The group has performed in many concerts, competitions and national and international festivals through the years. With musical director Dr Roger McLean and accompanist David Stewart, the choir currently has around 35 active members, of which two are founder members. Last year, the choir celebrated their 50th anniversary with a number of events including civic reception in Paisley Town Hall and a special concert in May 2018. Brookfield News Brookfield Gala Day: Saturday 18th August from 2pm Brookfield’s annual Gala Day is almost here once again and fingers are well and truly crossed that the spell of fine weather continues - or at least reappears if there’s a temporary break! The event will feature a variety of stalls and activities for all the family including Tombola, Inflatable fun, Face painting, CD/DVD’s, Cake & Candy, Pig Racing, Prize Raffle, Coconut Shy, Beer Tent/Bar - and plenty more! together with the ever-popular Bike Swap to be run in conjunction with LEAP from Bridge of Weir. Village Trust AGM: Thursday 30th August at 7.30pm – Brookfield Village Hall Brookfield Village Trust was set up several years ago to acquire the Merchiston Field, which lies between the Victoria Road houses and the former Merchiston Hospital and thereby preserve our Village envelope.

We are very lucky in the Houston, Brookfield, and Crosslee area to have easy access to clean and green recreational areas so that both individuals and families can walk, ramble, cycle, and generally enjoy the areas on our doorstep. Recently I have received complaints from constituents about quad bike riders using open park areas, both in the Oilfields and at Ardgryffe Park.

Now, I love sport and have been involved in sports development for many decades in my professional life, but safety must come first, quad bikes are simply not suitable for residential areas and I would urge those who want to use them to find an appropriate site.

My advice surgery in Brookfield is on the 2nd Thursday of the month at 6.30pm in Brookfield Village Hall, and my advice surgery in Houston is on the 4th Thursday of the month in Houston Village Hall, at 7.15pm, excluding July and December.

Respect for each other is also at the heart of two complaints I received recently about etiquette on the cycle path for both walkers and cyclists. One constituent nearly got her dog run down by a speeding cyclist while one cyclist was nearly knocked off his bike by an enthusiastic canine. Our cycle path system in Renfrewshire is terrific for relaxation, especially in this weather, but please can users be respectful to each other. When cyclists are approaching can families put their dogs on a leash and can cyclists please fit and utilise a bell to alert walkers of their approach.

Scottish Country Dancing

The Scottish Country Dancing Group restarts on Wednesday 5th September in Houston and Killellan Kirk, West Halls, Main Street, Houston at 8pm. Early Years Expansion Plans Agreed Inverclyde Council’s programme to deliver double the number of nursery hours by 2020 has the potential to help close attainment and inequality gaps.

The expansion of early years learning and childcare will be achieved with three new Council nurseries and five refurbished facilities.

Lochwinnoch Primary School As the school year draws to a close we have celebrated all things AMAZING at Lochwinnoch Primary School. Primary 2 to Primary 6 took part in our Rocky Monster Show which was a roaring success. Children sang their hearts out to a full crowd both nights and staff and parents alike were so proud of how confident and enthusiastic they all were!

Primary 7’s leaver’s service was a very emotional affair. The service was based on the theme of The Greatest Showman and the children reflected on their best memories of their time at school, as well as their fondest memories of their trip to Ardentinny. They also sang “This is me” and “You’ve got a friend in me” from Toy Story.

Primary 5 and 6 hosted a fantastic Spanish cafe where parents were invited and treated to Spanish cuisine such as paella and patatas bravas.

The children helped to prepare all of the food and decorated the hall with wonderful bunting and Spanish pictures.

More outdoor learning places will be set up and private nursery places – including childminders – increased to meet the 1140 hours target by 2020.

“Early years learning is fundamental to giving all children the best possible start in life and I am confident the quality of care we already provide will be continued.”

The Scottish Government is fully funding the early learning expansion – Inverclyde Council will receive over £21million by 2022.

An additional 200 early years officers, associated managers and support staff will also be recruited by the Council.

Councillor Clocherty added: “All of this has been planned with parental choice at the forefront of every decision.

“It is a mammoth undertaking and I would like to thank everyone who has been involved for their work so far and for the effort that is now needed to implement the plan successfully.”

Primary 7 also had their annual Leaver’s Dance which had a circus theme this year.

It was lovely to see everyone dressed up for the occasion. The girls all looked gorgeous and the boys were extremely handsome too. We had a popcorn bar and a hotdog stand, as well as games, dancing and a photo booth. It was a fantastic night to wave them off and wish them well on their way to high school.

We would like to take this opportunity to say thank you to all parents and carers for their support and help this year; you have been invaluable as usual! We would also like to wish a wonderful farewell and good luck to all staff that are moving on to new ventures. You will be missed but will always be considered part of the team at LPS.

Get involved in free summer fun with Street Stuff Schools may be out but the ever-popular Street Stuff activities don’t stop with our packed summer programme.

Football, dance, gaming, DJ workshops and much more will be available for young people aged 8 to16 to take part in for free this summer.

Houston Primary School P7 School Dance The festivities started at the River Inn with a social gathering, followed by pipers leading the procession up to the school.

The pupils engaged in the Canadian Barn Dance, Strip the Willow and the Military Two Step to name but a few, followed by a disco. Parents joined in the celebrations for a final dance before going home. A great night was had by all.

Farewell to P7

With no school to look forward to each day, all young people are being invited to take part in the summer clubs at a range of venues across Renfrewshire.

Afternoon clubs will take place in Renfrew, Johnstone, Paisley and Linwood until 11th August, with core evening sessions on each day except Sundays.

Young people attending an afternoon session will also receive a free healthy lunch as they’re sure to work up an appetite at whichever activity they take part in.

Those who attend will also get the chance to have their say on what they would like to see as part of the 10 year Street Stuff birthday celebration next year.

Councillor Marie McGurk, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Communities, Housing and Planning Policy Board, said: “With bundles of energy to spare with no schoolwork over the summer, Street Stuff provides the perfect opportunity to tire them out each day.

On the 22nd June we officially said farewell to our wonderful P7 pupils at the Valedictory Service in Houston and Killellan Church. Parents of P7 pupils were invited to attend to share in this very special moment. Max Donaghey played the pipes on arrival of our pupils of P4-7 and invited guests. We thank Rev Ian Bell, Carol Rankin and Derek Whittle for making the service run so smoothly.

“Our brilliant team of coaches and volunteers will help engage them in different activities each day whether they’re a dancer, footballer or gamer.

Poly Tunnel

Street Stuff is a diversionary project run in partnership between Renfrewshire Council, Police Scotland, Scottish Fire and Rescue Service, Engage Renfrewshire and St Mirren Football Club.

Our school Gardening Club have been very busy planting a wide variety of fruits and vegetables in their own poly tunnel. With all this lovely weather, I’m sure we will have a bumper crop! We thank our very dedicated team of grandparents and parents who support this club throughout the year.

“With the added addition of a healthy lunch to keep them going during the day, I’m sure it’ll be a struggle to get them home from each activity.

“All young people are free to come along, make friends and have a fantastic summer.”

The programme began in 2009 in Renfrewshire contributing to a reduction in youth disorder and anti-social behaviour by 75% over the first five years with a sustained reduction of 65%.

Kilmacolm Toddlers and Playgroup With the summer holidays well under way the children and playgroup leaders are enjoying a well-deserved rest after last term’s fun. We are now looking forward to next term and the agenda is already packed. Term starts back on the week of 20th August and there are still places available at all sessions.

Both playgroup and toddlers runs from St Columba Church Small Hall in Kilmacolm.

Toddlers runs on Wednesdays from 10am until 11.30am, join other parents/ guardians in a safe and friendly environment for babies and toddlers. You don’t need to register – just turn up on the day, sessions cost £3. Tea, coffee and snacks are provided and a large selection of toys, games and books are available.

The Wizard of Oz What a spectacular performance!!

The school theatre was packed for two nights, as audiences were treated to watching a year of tireless work by the Drama group unfold before them in the ‘Wizard of Oz’. The show also had an amazing live orchestra. Congratulations and a huge thank you all of the pupils and staff involved – including backstage - with a particular thank you to Mrs Carter for bringing the show together. Playgroup runs on a Monday, Tuesday and Thursday from 9.30am until 11.30am. This is for children aged 2 years, 4 months to 5 years.

Registration is required and you can register for one, two or three sessions per week, sessions cost £9.50. You will leave your children in the very capable hands of our experienced playleaders (all PVG checked and first aid trained). Activities include messy play, physical activities, story time and crafts. Each week is based around a theme such as, pirates/numbers/the zoo and the activities are picked according to the theme. Some weeks we have visiting helpers who run football, gymnastics or musicland sessions (at no extra cost). There is plenty to keep your little ones fully involved and entertained.

Houston Toddler Group Before we finished up for summer break we enjoyed our annual teddy bear’s picnic/sports day at Houston Village Park.

The weather did not disappoint and everyone enjoyed a fun morning in the sun. We played with friends, chilled in the sun and took part in a few running events.

We hope everyone has enjoyed the summer break and we look forward to seeing old and new faces again on Thursday 16th August, same place same time!

We welcome all children age between 0-4 years old, together with their parents, grandparents or carers to join in with the games, crafts and play on offer every Thursday. The children can enjoy playing, making friends and of course snack time while the adults can catch up with a cuppa.

St Columba’s School, Kilmacolm Prizegiving 2018 Prizegiving provided a wonderful way to celebrate success and round off a fulfilling year at both Junior and Senior School.

Mr Ewan Aitken, CEO of Cyrenians and a supporter of the Social Bite Village, gave a truly inspiring speech on social justice and presented Lukas Kong with the award of Junior School Dux and Lucia Gizzi as Proxime Accessit. Mr Chris Van der Kuyl, founding Chairman of Entrepreneurial Scotland and founder, co-owner and chairman of 4J Studios responsible for Minecraft console editions, delivered a wonderfully motivating speech before presenting Jamie Beverstock and Anna Hendry with the award of Joint Dux of St Columba’s School 2018.

Profound speeches, musical delights and heartfelt goodbyes contributed to the mixed emotions that we felt as we wished the Class of 2018 every success for the next chapter in their lives.

Beating the Retreat An outstanding spectacle of pipes and drums pageantry took place in the grounds of the Junior School on the evening of Monday 25th June involving 65 pupils from Junior 5 to Senior VI. Activities Week As part of activities week a number of pupils throughout Senior School enjoyed travelling all over the globe to further their learning from throughout the year. 46 Senior III pupils enjoyed a trip to France and Belgium to visit various WWI cemeteries, memorials and sites to further their understanding of the tragedy of war. Senior II pupils travelled to Ardeonaig in Perthshire for a week filled with plenty of fun outdoor activities, one of these included going on an overnight sailing trip and wild camping on the shores of Loch Tay. Senior IV ventured to Lagganlia, near Aviemore, for a week of some really fantastic team building activities. Our Senior I pupils stayed a little closer to home as they enjoyed their week in the glorious sunshine at Loch Lomond and the Trossachs as part of their John Muir Award, where they enjoyed creative writing inspired by their beautiful surroundings and participated in a number of activities to develop their skills and knowledge of geography, history, biology, language and conservation.

After an exceptionally busy last couple of weeks of term, we are sure all pupils are thoroughly enjoying their summer break!

Community Summer Fete We are holding our community Summer Fete at Birkmyre Park on Saturday 8th September from 2pm - 4pm. There will be a food and drink marquee, novelty crufts, family rounders, mini-mudder, tennis, rugby, community stalls, Pipe Band performance and more. All welcome.

Alexis is the latest (and because of BREXIT possibly the last) of more than ten senior pupils of Gryffe High and St Columba’s to be sponsored by Gryffe Valley Rotary Club to attend the annual “Euroscolar” event in Strasbourg. Euroscola offers an immersive experience in the Chamber of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, allowing high-school students to learn about European integration by experiencing it first hand.

Students from the EU Member States are selected to become Members of the European Parliament for one day. They take the floor in plenary and committee sessions to debate and vote on resolutions on current affairs, all the while practising their language skills and making friends with fellow students from across Europe.

Strawberry Field Out of School Care Children enjoyed a delicious barbeque on the last day of the school term in the gorgeous sunshine as well as lots off fun on the bouncy castle.

So far we have visited a number of parks and enjoyed having our lunch on the picnic tables. We have also had a couple of trips to the beach where the children had amazing fun collecting a number of items from shells to sea weed. Our visits also allowed us to talk to the children about the pollution that is happening on our beaches.

We have been making the most of the good weather by enjoying a variety of outdoor activities with lots of football games to coincide with the world cup.

The children have also been doing lots of activities for the world cup with some of the boys making an excellent football pitch with odds and ends.

Alexis a final year student at St Columba’s School told members how her trip had started with a flight delay which was used positively, allowing time for the party to get to know each other. Once in Strasbourg the Scottish Euroscolars were set the usual tasks of interviewing the residents and reporting findings in documentary form. Perhaps the highlight was being in the chamber - all 540 delegates from 21 countries. Apparently ‘BREXIT’ was largely ignored but sadly it may be that 2018 will be the final time UK will be able to attend.

Alexis thanked the Club for this opportunity, which she had found both challenging and enjoyable. She will soon become an undergraduate at Dundee, studying accountancy.

St Columba’s Senior “Youth Speaks” team – repeat performance Rotarians and their partners along with Andrea Angus (Rector) and Antonia Berry (Junior Depurty Rector), parents and grandparents enjoyed a rerun of the award-winning St Columba’s team speaking on the the power of music. John Douglas introduced Finlay Cooper as Chairman, Mark Connolly as Speaker and Eilidh McCruddon to give the Vote of Thanks. He reminded everyone that the team had reached the final of the Rotary Youth Speaks competition after winning three earlier rounds, and then had to fly to Exmouth in the West Country for the final on a Saturday the day after their exams. They emerged worthy winners of the Great Britain and Ireland team competition and Mark won the award for best speaker.

1st Houston Girl’s Brigade 1st Houston Girls’ Brigade is a lively, vibrant organisation for girls and young women. We are a volunteer led uniformed organisation which offers a safe place for girls and young women from Primary 1 right through to S6 in Secondary School.

We are a modern, progressive organisation open to girls of all faiths or none.

Our company offers a safe place for girls and young women to meet, a place for fun, a place for learning, a place for challenge, a place for personal development and a place where every girl is valued irrespective of her background.

We welcome those with educational or other special needs and it is our policy, wherever possible, to include those who are challenged by physical or mental disability as we seek to be inclusive at all times.

All sections follow a balanced, age-appropriate programme offering educational, service, spiritual and physical elements, recognising our holistic approach.

In his very well-crafted and superbly presented speech Mark explained how music has the power to change moods, calm patients, focus concentration and unite people.

David Fairbairn thanked the team and congratulated them on their success and Andrea Angus thanked Rotary for its support.

The award scheme provides the opportunity for girls to learn new skills at a level appropriate to their ability in a fun, safe and secure environment.

To enable us to continue to grow we require more volunteers to join us. If you would like to come along on a Monday night as a Leader or as a helper we would love to hear from you (this could be on a weekly, monthly or even a couple of weeks throughout our year).

Jane Fawcett the Event Organiser and Visitor Centre Assistant at Castle Semple said: “It’s the location at Castle Semple Loch in Lochwinnoch which makes this car show even more special. It’s simply stunning. The cars are packed in, on display in the car park. So dry feet, clean cars and happy visitors and owners.

So many grinning faces to be seen as they ogle the cars – remembering their first car, that time it broke down or a first kiss in it!”

Once again, Jane will be supporting her local hospice, St Vincents in Howwood.

Last year the show raised over £1,150 from entrants fees and stalls provided

by Laura McDade and the all-important volunteers from the hospice: “It was the first time I’d run the show for charity and owners were more than happy to pay to display their cars. I love the hospice and all they do. This year I dedicate the show to Campbell who was in the hospices care for a short time in July. ” Last year’s show had 80 vehicles - everything from a Beardmore Paramount Taxi, Rover P6, Austin 14 Goodwood, Hillman Husky, Ford Falcon and Skoda Rapid (whoever thought that would be a classic) and a variety of Hotrods and American beasts alongside some tasty motorbikes.

Scotland’s biggest family event returns to Ayr to provide the best weekend of the year with more air displays, more food, more craft fairs, more trade, and more fun! Oh, and hopefully - more sun! This is Scotland though, so bring your umbrella and your shorts!

The Scottish International Airshow is FREE to attend, and hopefully always will be. We only charge for certain creature comforts on the site so we can continue to bring you the biggest and best event we can! 2018 is all about the airshow, so we are moving away from having huge structures on the site and making everything more open and visible so we can bring more to you on the ground, and everyone can see everything in the sky.

There will be no ticket box office on the site this year, so please purchase your tickets in advance to avoid disappointment.

Aircraft Tour Some of the most iconic fighter planes from the past 100 years are to go on display in Glasgow this summer as part of celebrations marking the centenary of the Royal Air Force (RAF).

The RAF 100 Aircraft Tour, taking place at the Glasgow Science Centre (from Friday 31st July - Sunday 2nd August) will allow families and enthusiasts alike to get up close with a selection of full-size aircraft from throughout the RAF’s illustrious history.

From the First World War to the present day, visitors will have the chance to see aircraft including the Sopwith Snipe, historic Spitfire, Harrier ‘jump jet’ and the latest F35 Lightning, complete with crews in period uniform.

The free event will be supported by an interactive Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) exhibition, with a focus on aviation and aerospace activities, aimed at engaging young people. Otitis Externa in Dogs

Helping Hedgehogs

Otitis externa is inammation of the external ear canal.

It occurs when a change in the normal environment of the ear canal causes the glands lining the canal to enlarge and produce excessive wax. It is often a secondary symptom of another underlying disease.

Due to the prolonged hot dry spell hedgehogs are ďŹ nding it hard to ďŹ nd their natural prey of slugs and snails, so if you have hedgehogs near you please try and help them out at this time.

Otitis externa aects dogs of any age and breed, but long-eared breeds, such as spaniels and retrievers, and dogs with hairy external canals, such as terriers and poodles, are more susceptible.

Wildlife experts advise that hedgehogs will eat cat/dog food and water, but under no circumstances feed them bread and or milk as their systems cannot digest this.

Diagnosis is based on clinical examination of the external ear canal.

Sometimes samples of ear discharge will be taken for cytology, examination for parasites or culture.

FAMILIES will join fundraisers and puppies on Sunday 2nd September from 12noon as the Canine Partners’ Bramble Ramble Fun Day comes to Glasgow.

In recurrent cases of otitis externa further investigations for underlying causes may be appropriate e.g. blood samples for allergy testing or a diet trial for food allergies/intolerances.

Treatment Where there is a lot of hair and/or discharge in the ear canal it is often beneďŹ cial for the ear to be plucked and ushed under sedation to remove obstruction and allow full examination and treatment.

Topical ear drops are the most common treatment. These contain a combination of antibiotic, antifungal and corticosteroid. Corticosteroid tablets may also be used to reduce pain and swelling.

In recurrent cases and those where an underlying cause has been identiďŹ ed longer term treatment and control measures may be required.

Persistent, untreated otitis externa causes chronic pain and can lead to rupture of the ear drum, deafness, nerve damage, otitis media, otitis interna, and (rarely) meningoencephalitis.

Kilmacolm Golf Club Huge congratulations to 14 year old Romy Erskine who won the Xact Scottish Girls Nett Championship Match Play over the world renowned links at Moray Golf Club.

The event is one of the season’s most eagerly anticipated fixtures for Scotland’s young golfers and saw over 180 boys and girls play 36 holes of stroke play over both Old and New Courses.

Only the top 32 girls reached the match play stages (16 each off Scratch and Nett). Romy has already proven herself as an accomplished match player in our Ladies Greenlees and Junior Newton Shield teams. She actually qualified 32nd and ended up finishing 1st in the Nett division! What an incredible achievement. Well done to Josh Greer too on reaching the semifinals of the Boys Amateur (Scratch) Championship, also at Moray.

Our Gents Newton Shield team, managed by past Captain Ian Kerr, also saw much success. Having come top of their division, they gained home advantage to win against rivals Old Ranfurly in the semifinals. This was the team’s eager return to a final since 2010 and were pipped to the title against Erskine, played at Cochrane Castle Golf Club. Well done to our team and to Erskine and thanks to John McCool and Ian McCosh from Cochrane Castle for their superb support and hospitality.

Finally, in perfect weather, 128 players teed it up for our 10th Annual Gents Open on Sunday 24th June. The course was in perfect condition after a long hot dry spell.

One of the conditions of our competition, is that players can only win one prize. It was a close run affair, with the winner having to be decided on a countback over the last 9 holes.

Lee Jenkins (Elderslie G.C.) and Kilmacolm’s Conar Campbell both had excellent rounds of 1 under par 68, however Lee Jenkins lifted the trophy and the first prize voucher of £160. Conar had the consolation however of picking up 1st place in the A Class Handicap event with his Net 63 earning him a voucher of £110. In 2nd place with a Net 65 was Jim Schiavone (Lundin Links), 3rd place was Frank Boyland (Kilmacolm) with a 66 edging out Norman Bowie (Machrahanish) on countback. On the same score of 66 was Kilmacolm’s Charles Conway who was unfortunate to miss out on the prizes due to countback.

Ladies Section The season is well underway with lots of great golf being played in this fabulous weather.

However, Lady Captain’s Day had to be postponed until September due to “Hurricane Hector” which was very disappointing.

A fun and successful Past Captain’s Putter competition was played. The winner of the 18 hole competition, on a very breezy day, was Lynda Bradley (BIH) with Morag Turner second. The winner of the putting competition was Lois Brown (BIH) with Sheila Rennie (pictured) coming second who also had an amazing two holes in one!

Our Rainbow Ramble will take place on Sunday 12th August 2018 Start the event in a pristine white t-shirt and see it take on the colours of the rainbow as you are showered in a kaleidoscope of powdered paints as you pass each colour station. These paints are non-toxic, environmentally friendly, biodegradable, safe and FDA Tested and more importantly easily washed off!!

The ramble will take place in the park at Ferguslie Gardens where you will do 4 loops round the park – a distance of approximately 3K. If you do want to take part but would rather not be covered in powdered paint then please come along in the brightest t-shirt you own (tie-dye is always a winner)!

Registration costs £10 (children are free with a registered adult) and this includes a fundraising pack containing sponsorship forms, t-shirt, and your own sunglasses. As a guide, we suggest a minimum sponsorship of £50 per person, but we are extremely grateful for any amount raised. Do it with colour for ACCORD!

Old Course Ranfurly On Sunday July 1st, Angus Bell and Kenny Barr completed 100 holes in a day raising nearly £1500 for SAMH. It was a very warm day which made the challenge all the harder for the boys. Thanks to the spectators and to all of those who donated. Thanks also go to Old Ranfurly and Kilmacolm Golf Club for their support.

Congratulations to Aidan O’Hagan who managed to make it to the Quarter finals of the Scottish Boys at Moray. He won Stroke-play with a total of 136 and then followed up with a great run in the knockouts. What an effort for our 14 year old member!

Over 80 l a d i e s competed in glorious sunshine at OCRGC in the Ladies Open. Over 30 clubs were represented with Merope Dunlop from Old Ran and Sandra MacDougall from Greenock winning with 42 points.

Second and third place also had 42 points but lost out on countback. A huge thanks to all the sponsors who allowed us to offer novelty prizes at every hole. Over £500 was raised for MND Scotland from the raffle. Thanks to all the ladies who took part and to the ladies committee for all their hard work and commitment making the day a fantastic success!

Strathgryffe Tennis Club recently hosted the Scottish Junior Closed Championships and there was success for home players Megan O’Brien and Kyle McKay.

Adult Ballet Class

The tournament, attracting players from throughout Scotland, had a strong representation from the host club with 24 players competing in the various competitions. There were some excellent performances as the players revelled playing in the magnificent weather with two home players achieving notable success.

In the 9 and Under Girls event, Megan O’Brien edged out fellow Strathgryffe player Elisa Gibson in an extremely close competition. The competition was a round robin event and it came down to a matter of points separating Megan and Elisa Meanwhile in the 12 and Under Boys competition, Kyle McKay was the victor in a strong field of 23 boys. In the final, Kyle fought off the challenge of another home player, Liam O’Brien, to win 6-2, 6-2.

6 Steps to Prevent & Fix a Stitch Most runners will at some point have suffered the dreaded stitch. The unmistakeable shooting pain that can force you to stop or even abandon your run. Unfortunately, the jury is still out when it comes to determining the true cause of the diaphragm and tummy muscles going into spasm, and therefore there are many theories relating to it.

However, here are some tips to try to prevent it happening or fix it if you tend to suffer: 1. EAT LIGHTER MEALS. We are all different and digest foods at different speeds, but try and eat foods that will fuel your run, avoiding ones high in fat or fibre before your run, as these take longer to break down and digest.

2. WARM UP. Research suggests that runners who warm up properly are less likely to develop a stitch. Increase pace gradually and use dynamic stretches to lubricate the joints and increase core temperature.

3. STRENGTHEN YOUR CORE. A stronger core improves your posture and can secure your diaphragm and reduce movement of it during your run. This could potentially prevent the muscle spasm that causes the pain. Many stitches happen when form drops as well… so a stronger core to keep good posture throughout should help.

4. BREATHE NATURALLY. Keep a rhythm. Keep it controlled and in tempo with your run. Sudden changes in your breathing pattern are known to upset your diaphragm and therefore trigger a stitch. Focus on your breathing.

5. GOOD FORM. This relates to point 3, but try and run tall with your shoulders back and the head held high. Stay light on your feet with a slight forward tilt. Keep this posture throughout as it takes any strain off your diaphragm.

6. WHEN A STITCH STRIKES – Tension and frustration will make it worse, so stay calm and relax. Sometimes breathing deeply will make it ease but if not, slow down and raise your arm high into the air above your head on the side where the pain is. This stretches the muscles out.

Hold this for 30-60 secs as you run/walk and it can often do the trick!

Ranfurly Castle Ladies News As usual at this time of year, the Ladies at Ranfurly Castle have been playing a lot of golf. What is unusual is that the golf has been played in lovely weather, giving good scoring conditions.

On 13th June the Ladies competed in the Grans Trophy with Anne Judge being the winner. The Vets Trophy was played on 27th June with Morag Cunningham the winner and the Gillies Trophy was played on 11th July with Anne Judge, once again, the winner.

Past Lady Captains day was held on Friday 6th July with 21 ladies playing in a tri-am format on a beautiful sunny morning.

A further 5 past Captains joined them for a splendid lunch and photo call on the clubhouse steps. The Trophy winning team were Anne Judge, Agnes Williamson and Eileen Walker.

The West Renfrewshire League team have finished the season with two wins and one loss so will retain their position in Division One next year.

On 19th July the club hosted the Ladies Open Day with 75 entries for the Tri-am format. Conditions were perfect and all enjoyed the day. The winning team came from Balfron Golf Club, 2nd team were from Milngavie Golf Club while 3rd place went to a team consisting of two ladies from Bothwell Castle and Chris Minto from Ranfurly Castle. A wide selection of novelty prizes were also awarded and a big ‘Thank You’ is due to all the sponsors of these prizes.

Gold DofE Award for Local Girls Young achievers from across the country, including 4 local girls, have received top awards at a ceremony in Edinburgh.

Former Gryffe High School pupils, Rachel Szuster, Rachael Anderson, Lucy McCabe and Lauren Newlands, received their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards at a ceremony at the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, in the presence of HRH The Earl of Wessex on Thursday 5th of July.

Council Cracks Down on Commercial Dumpers Renfrewshire Council is cracking down on businesses illegally dumping commercial waste - by bringing in a permit scheme at the area’s five Household Waste Recycling Centres.

In a move to stop commercial operators using the centres, anyone driving a van, pick-up, mini bus or towing a trailer must from 16th July register online for a free permit by 4.30pm the day before they plan to visit a facility.

Permit holders must ensure they bring photo identification and proof of residency to the centre when they visit.

The new system does not apply to residents using a car unless they are towing a trailer.

Residents can apply online for a free permit by filling out the application here http://www.renfrewshire.gov.uk/HWRCpermit.

You don’t have to pay vehicle tax on the following types of vehicle.

There is also detailed information and frequently asked questions to help residents familiarise themselves with the new permit system.

Vehicles used by a disabled person You can claim disability exemption when you apply for vehicle tax. Find out if you’re eligible and how to claim.

You can remove an exemption from a vehicle if it’s no longer being used by a disabled person.

Disabled passenger vehicles Vehicles (apart from ambulances) used by organisations providing transport for disabled people are exempt.

Mobility scooters, powered wheel chairs and invalid carriages They must have a maximum speed of 8mph on the road, and be fitted with a device limiting them to 4mph on footways to be exempt.

Historic vehicles Vehicles made before 1st January 1978 are exempt from 1st April 2018.

Electric vehicles The electricity must come from an external source or an electric storage battery not connected to any source of power when the vehicle is moving to be exempt.

Mowing machines The mower must be designed, constructed and used just for cutting grass to be exempt. It does not include tractors used to tow gang mowers.

Steam vehicles You don’t have to pay vehicle tax on any steam-powered vehicle.

Vehicles used just for agriculture, horticulture and forestry This includes tractors, agricultural engines and light agricultural vehicles used off-road.
