EXPERT JET-WASHING With Summer now here, this is the time of year we are busiest cleaning driveways, patios etc. If you are thinking of having your driveway cleaned then it is crucial it’s done correctly to prevent problems in future. If there are a lot of weeds these should be treated before jet-washing and after a high-pressure industrial clean that removes dirt, moss and a little sand it is critical to re-sand with kiln-dried sand, a Biocidal treatment will then resist future growths. Give us a call for free friendly information on this service or for a free quotation. 01505 863 863 www. nutechcleaning.co.uk

This 250th issue
Month
Who’d have thought! We’ve reached a quarter millennium with our 250th issue of The Advertizer. Starting back in 1995 as a wee four page black & white news-sheet delivered to 2000 homes in Kilmacolm, the magazine has now grown to a full colour, glossy publication with over 13,500 copies distributed every month covering the Gryffe area of West Renfrewshire.
ROADS There has been a flurry of activity on the A761 Bridge of Weir to Kilmacolm section as new drainage and verge works are carried out. This is to help prevent the flooding that regularly causes water to lie across the road at the low section, below Scart Farm. Once finished, the road should be resurfaced all the way from Kilmacolm to Bridge of Weir.
EVENTS Of all the days for a weather front to hit Scotland, it was the Saturday of the Houston Show and Kilbarchan’s Lilias Day. Both events ended up cancelled due to the high winds and rain that were forecast. It was hoped that Lilias Day could be rescheduled, but this will not now happen. However, the committee are rallying well and are hopeful of a bigger and even better event for next year. Lochwinnoch Gala Day did go ahead the following weekend with better weather. Although it was sad to see a last minute appeal through Facebook, still requesting volunteers. We all enjoy attending these events, but it takes volunteers to make them happen. So if you think you could give a little time, please get in touch with your local event team and get your name down for next year! Bridge of Weir’s Gala Day was a great success - the parade through the village was spectacular and visitors to Houston Road Park said it was one of the best shows they had been to. All this despite the main man, Gordon Lethorn, being in hospital prior to the event. Our thoughts and best wishes to Gordon, his family and the committee members.
WARNING! We heard of rogue traders going around knocking doors in Langbank offering to check roofs. Please be aware and look out for elderly neighbours who are always a prime target. If you see or hear of anything like this, please contact the police on 101.

And another thing to be wary of is email and social media postings. We’ve recently been in receipt of the rogue email that advises that your friend is stuck in another country with no funds to get home. Please send money! No, please get in touch with your friend and confirm that he/she is safe & sound. Then junk the email address and delete from your inbox. On Facebook recently, we’ve had a number of interesting looking posts saying things like “Oh, I never thought I’d see this...” with a link to open. Again, please don’t! If you are really intrigued, why not Google the item and see what comes up. Invariably, you’ll see straight away that these are scams and hacks and to be avoided at all costs.
PLANNING There is still no update on the Lintwhite Gate proposal in Bridge of Weir. The Community Council has checked with the developer’s agent regarding a date for the public consultation and exhibition on proposals, but as yet no date has been set by the developer and no indication given as to when it might happen. The only restriction on the developer is that he must give a minimum of seven days notice and advertise the event in the press. The CC will advertise the date on Facebook as soon as they receive notice and will also arrange for posters around the village. Again, there is no news about the former Bull’s Garage site, and in Kilmacolm the Institute building is in limbo as we go to press as demolition has been suspended due to a work related accident resulting in serious injury to one of the workers.
FUNNY And a wee funny to finish on: apparently Tripadvisor has received a negative review of Ben Nevis - apparently it is too high! I’m speechless!

Ally opens ‘Tranquil Space’ Garden at St Vincent’s Hospice Former Rangers manager, Ally McCoist recently formally opened the new ‘Tranquil Space’ Garden to the community at St Vincent’s Hospice in Howwood, Renfrewshire. Mr McCoist said, “I feel honoured to be asked to open the Garden. The care provided by St Vincent’s Hospice touches the lives and hearts of so many local families – it is a privilege to be able to offer my support. I know this wonderful garden will become a much-loved place where the whole community can enjoy the peace and beauty of nature.” Mr McCoist, who had braved the wild weather on Saturday to cycle round Arran as part of St Vincent’s Arran Challenge weekend, planted a rhododendron as part of the garden’s opening ceremony. The new garden has been a labour of love for staff and volunteers at the Hospice. Over the past few months the rural landscape around the Hospice building in Howwood has gradually been transformed into a beautiful garden which is now accessible to the whole community. A paved pathway meanders through five different sections of the garden, from the Rose Garden, past St Vincent’s Tree and the Retreat, through Forget-me-not and into the Sensory Garden. At the bottom of the gentle slope, Rest-a-while offers a quiet and reflective space beside a pond.
Maggie’s Centres, which are supported by players of People’s Postcode Lottery, are located in the grounds of NHS cancer treatment centres throughout the UK and offer a programme of support to people with cancer, their family and friends, which includes benefits advice and relaxation classes as well as nutrition advice. For more information about Maggie’s Glasgow visit: www.maggiescentres.org/our-centres/maggiesglasgow
Lochwinnoch Bluebell Walk Despite a bad start to the weather, the sun finally came through and the children enjoyed searching for bluebells and raced their plastic ducks.
The Garden is a long-held dream of the charity’s Chief Executive, Kate Lennon and her staff and volunteers. “We hope that the whole community will enjoy the new garden and see it as a shared space which is accessible to anyone who wants to use it.” said Ms Lennon. “Of course, the garden will also benefit all those who currently use the Hospice; in time it will become an extension of the care and support that our patients and their families receive within the building itself”. Construction of the Garden was very generously funded by donations and support from the Landfill Community Fund, the Malcolm Group, National Lottery Awards for All and Helping Hands Association. The garden design work was undertaken by students from SRUC College in Ayr. Planting is already well under way, and local people have already dedicated a number of trees and shrubs in celebration of their loved ones. The Garden is large and there is still space to fill – as well as rabbit-proof fences to buy. If you would like to make a contribution toward the further development of the Garden, or to make a dedication of your own, please call St Vincent’s Hospice on 01505 705635 or email info@svh.co.uk

Helen Teese and Helen Ostrycharz will be moving from the “B” to “A” section for next season, because of the high standard of their work. Congratulations !!! Paisley High Street to re-open in July Paisley’s pedestrianised High Street is to open to cars and taxis in the evenings and overnight from the end of July. Renfrewshire Council has announced the start date for what is believed to be the first such pilot in Scotland. The first car in almost 20 years will be allowed back into County Place, Gilmour Street and the High Street from 6.30pm – 6.30am.
Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan said: “It has been something of a long and winding road dating back to 2013 to be allowed to make this change with a public hearing followed by discussions with Scottish Ministers, but we have remained committed to our plan which has had strong support from local businesses. Now we have received confirmation from Transport Scotland and are looking forward to seeing the benefits in action. Improving vehicle access is a key part of our plans to bring people – whether residents or visitors – back into Paisley town centre to boost the developing night-time economy. “Renfrewshire Council has made the regeneration of our traditional town centres one of our key priorities. There is a strong sense that Paisley is making progress and this change can help continue that positive change.”

Dental Blog by Sheila Macintyre, Practice Owner, Kilbarchan Dental Practice
NOT SO “HEALTHY” OPTIONS FOR YOUR TEETH The BBC recently ran a story revealing that many “healthy” snacks and drinks are not as good for your family as you would imagine. According to campaign group, Action on Sugar, out of the 94 products they looked at almost nine out of ten were more sugary than jelly sweets like Haribo. Some of the biggest offenders were treats like fruit juices, coated raisins and other dried fruit products. It’s not just the high calories that are the problem either, processed dried fruits coat your teeth and, because most of the water has been removed, the sugar and acids are much less diluted. As we all know sugar can cause tooth decay so the more we can do to reduce the amount we consume and minimise the impact, the better. Try eating fresh fruit and vegetables instead of processed snacks – they retain far higher levels of vitamins, minerals, water and fibre - a child would have to eat an entire pack of fresh strawberries to take in the same amount of sugar as in some processed fruit snacks! We would always recommend drinking water immediately after eating as this can help neutralize acids and help wash them away along with some of the sugar. Finally, follow a regular dental hygiene regime brushing at least twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste. If you have any queries regarding oral health don’t hesitate to visit us at the practice, call us on 01505 704969 or click www.kilbarchandental.co.uk where you will find lost more tips and advice.

Heart Start
Food Train Renfrewshire
Lochwinnoch Automated External Defibrillator AED installed
It’s National Volunteers’ Week, and we’d like to say a big thank you to our 38 superstar volunteers, who give up their time to keep Food Train Renfrewshire on track.
With the generous support of the Lochwinnoch Community Council, British Heart Foundation and Renfrewshire Council the local BHF Heart Start has installed an automated external defibrillator (AED). It is installed behind the McKillop hall beside the car charging point for the LEAP cars. Councillor Chris Gilmour was supported the purchase and installation of the AED. There is also CCTV to monitor the position of both. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses lifethreatening cardiac arrhythmias and is able to treat them through defibrillation which is the application of electrical therapy which stops the arrhythmia thus allowing the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. An AED used in conjunction with cardio pulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can save lives. The Lochwinnoch and Howwood heart start group has no over 120 people through the 2 hour course where the participants have learned CPR.

Andrea McLean supports BHF Scotland Furniture & Electrical stores I am writing to you and your readers to encourage everyone in Scotland to have a clear-out and donate any unwanted items to their local British Heart Foundation (BHF) Scotland Furniture & Electrical store.
So far this year, our volunteers have collectively donated 852 hours of their time, making 4,876 deliveries to over 150 local older people. And it’s only the beginning of July! They collect orders, they shop, they deliver. But it goes way beyond that… From opening jars and bottle tops, prompting with grocery orders, suggesting different food choices, highlighting any offers and savings, posting letters, taking out bins, pointing out trip hazards, signposting to other services, sharing recipes and gardening tips, listening, blethering, prompting a memory, I’m sure you will all agree our volunteers deliver much more than a shopping service. And our customers think so too. Please enjoy Thank You For Being A Friend – a montage of our customers this week giving our volunteers the big thumbs up! Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f89BGEGO1pQ&feature=youtu.be We’re delighted to have two new additional retail partners in Renfrewshire, so from July our customers will have the choice of Tesco and Asda in addition to Morrison’s. Referrals for our vital grocery shopping and delivery service flow in on an almost daily basis, so we are absolutely delighted to have been awarded £9k from all 5 of Renfrewshire’s Local Area Committees for the purchase of an additional van. This will allow us to reach even more local older people in 2015/16. A massive thank you to each LAC for this invaluable support. Stephen McGinty takes over as Regional Manager from 15th June. Stephen has a wealth of experience in the voluntary sector and in working with older people, and our Administrator Hayley and all our volunteers are looking forward to showing Stephen the ropes! I’m delighted to have worked with such fantastic volunteers, and colleagues throughout all the networks in Renfrewshire, over the last 2 years, and hope to be as fortunate in the development of the new North Ayrshire branch this summer.
Classic Cars at Come along and join in the excitement of Erskine’s annual Classic Car Show.
I have been an advocate of BHF Scotland Furniture & Electrical stores for a long time and think their free collection service for donations is fab! Like everyone, I love buying new things for my home but I also love adding a piece of recycled furniture into the mix because not only does it tend to be more unique but it can also help a great cause.
After another successful year, the Erskine Classic Car show will return and with a fantastic array of over 500 cars to admire as well as food, entertainment and stalls, it’s not to be missed.
As an interiors columnist, I like to source furniture from a wide variety of places, including BHF Scotland Furniture & Electrical stores. It’s amazing to think that by doing up your home with items from BHF Scotland stores, you are also helping to fund lifesaving research into heart disease, which affects people of all ages.
Please note that the venue of this years Classic Car Show has changed to Ingliston Country Club, Bishopton.
The BHF now has over 170 dedicated Furniture & Electrical stores, selling a range of items, from sofas, beds and dining tables to wardrobes, TVs and toasters. The stores are ideal for anyone looking for unique, good quality items on a budget, with sofas priced from £95, beds from £65 and washing machines from £60.
Once again there will be many classic car clubs in attendance to support Erskine. Caring for ex-Service men and women.
Saturday 11th July, 11am until 4pm Entry: £4 per adult, kids go free Location: Ingliston Country Club, Bishopton If you or your club would like to show your vehicle(s) at the Erskine Classic Car Show please 0141 814 4625 or download a registration form at http://www.erskine.org.uk/events/classic-cars-erskine
BHF Scotland stores are always looking for donations of unwanted household goods – anything from sofas, beds, wardrobes, TVs and small electricals. You can even book a free collection for your items online at bhf.org.uk/free or call 0800 915 3000. Visit bhf.org.uk/shops to find your local store. For those who are unable to donate, but would like to help in some other way, BHF Scotland Furniture & Electrical stores are always in need of volunteers. The day helps celebrate the town’s proud textile history by marking the victory of Paisley’s weavers over the town’s mill owners in the 19th century. The owners refused to pay their staff for the Sma’ (small) Shot thread, which was unseen but held together the famous Paisley-patterned cashmere shawls. A long fight and political battle ensued which the weavers eventually won and renamed the traditional July holiday Sma’ Shot Day. Expect family fun throughout the day in the town centre, kicking off with a parade led by the beating of the Charleston Drum, with the day ending with a bang during the spectacular Burning of the Cork. There will also be an appearance from the Slug in a Bottle market with an exciting mix of vintage items and contemporary/traditional craft and design, including silversmith jewellery, up-cycled and recycled accessories, vintage/ retro homewares and handcrafted products.

GRYFFE VALLEY ROTARY Much of the “Fun and Fellowship” of being member of Gryffe Valley Rotary comes from the weekly meetings at the River Inn, Houston when the bonhomie generated over a nice meal is normally enhanced by an informed talk on a seemingly random topic of some interest. Again, over recent weeks, members have enjoyed some outstanding talks. Karen Milne is a fundraiser with Recovery Across Mental Health (RAMH), an independent voluntary sector organisation operating across Renfrewshire. Karen said that their aim is to enable people to recover from mental ill health and to promote their wellbeing – apart from providing support to thousands of patients and their families another key aim is to raise awareness of a complex issue which affects 1 in 4 of us.

Spray Tanning It’s that time of year again when we start to get excited about the prospect of packing away our winter clothes and wearing some of those nice little summer favourites. So in order to look and feel our best, many of us opt for a spray tan. To get the best result consider the following tips..... Do - Exfoliate and wax or shave 24hrs before your treatment. Don’t - Wear make-up, deodorant or perfume when you attend your treatment as this can result in uneven tone if they react with the tanning solution. Do - Wear loose dark trousers and a dark top and underwear. Don’t - Get caught in the rain or immerse your hands in water while the colour is developing. Do - Wait until the recommended time before showering in order to let the full depth of the colour develop. When showering a bronze layer will wash off which is normal (This is only the indicator pigment washing away). Do not scrub your skin and remember to pat gently with a towel. Don’t - Exercise until the next day and in any case after you’ve had a shower. Anytime before and you’ll risk being streaky and patchy. Do - Moisturise daily, and your tan will fade gradually over three to five days. If you are keeping up with the moisturising routine it will still look good as it fades. Follow these tips and your tanning experience will be a more natural looking and longer lasting one. Laura x

Lesley King was an erstwhile colleague of Past President Mike Farley at Doosan Babcock where they were both involved in the generation of electricity. Mike had invited Lesley along to talk about the emerging new technology of generating electricity from fuel cells. Potential applications included cars, homes, and individual hospitals. Most years, Gryffe Valley sponsors local students in a Rotary organised visit to the European Parliament in Strasbourg along with others from across Europe. Our Euroscholars this year were Jan Catto from St Colombo’s and Lauren Stevenson from Gryffe High, and they came along to talk about their experience. In an amusing double act, they described their activities and the difficulties they faced in having to speak French most of the time and in trying to understand the local dialects. Some talks are delivered by members themselves. President Angus Matheson, resplendent in his dhoti, talked about his exchange trip to India with other Rotarians. He talked about his travels through the Golden Triangle region and he gave some fascinating facts and figures on the histories and cultures of the area. Member Chris Butlin supplemented his talk on a trip up the Duoro River in Portugal with a glass of the local port. Apart from the sights and experiences from his river cruise, including some impressive high-rise locks, Chris explained that he had the opportunity to visit a local vineyard owned by the McMillen family from these parts and to oversee the whole port production process. This included the barefooted crushing of grapes by some local ladies - and indeed Chris was himself p r e s s e d into service! Before inviting members to sample the excellent Late Bottled Vintage, Chris was at pains to explain the rigorous hygiene and cleanliness procedures implemented by the bare foot brigade – apparently the temperature of the human treading helps the fermentation process!

Appeal for Information
Small businesses battle to protect their ideas
The Bridge of Weir Memorial Society is making good progress with its plan to publish a book in next year telling the story of Bridge of Weir’s part in the Great War. Many families have been in contact already but the Society is appealing for anyone with a connection, memorabilia, letters, souvenirs, or simply memories and stories of relatives or descendants of those killed. New research from the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) suggests small firms are struggling to protect the identity and ideas at the heart of their businesses. Time and money spent on protecting intellectual property such as patents, branding and product designs takes valuable resources away from business development, potentially putting growth and innovation at risk.
For details of the men killed, the Bridge of Weir Memorial website is at http://www.bridgeofweirmemorial. co.uk

Protecting intellectual property is critical for the UK’s increasingly knowledge-based economy. Yet a quarter of the businesses surveyed by the FSB with intellectual property rights (25%) suffered some sort of violation or wrongdoing within the last five years. With almost one in three small businesses (30%) who own some form of intellectual property rights reliant on it for 75 to 100 per cent of their revenue, infringements of these rights can be incredibly damaging to small businesses. There are a number of tools and services in place that have been developed by the Intellectual Property Office to help secure and protect intellectual property rights, helped by recent reforms, but this research shows that small firms continue to find it difficult to use them. The FSB is calling for ongoing efforts to improve signposting and simplification to encourage take-up of the available support.
options of each. In a nutshell, my preference here is to go for Intel as they generally run cooler. A recent Which magazine ran a comparison on some of these devices, they offered a surprise victory to Dell’s £1000 effort but the more reasonably priced Acer and Lenovo models do it for me.
The ‘All in One’ type of computer has become quite popular over the last few years. These are the desktop computers that have the screen integrated with the computer itself so clutter and trailing wires are minimised. They have been around for a while now, with the Apple iMac leading the charge plenty of PC manufacturers have followed suit but most fail to meet the legendary Apple product quality. I have seen many of these devices try to make use of touch screen technology to little avail. Any time your hand reaches up to touch the screen on one of these devices it’s hard not to feel like a gorilla performing some simian intelligence test. These ‘All in One’ machines have improved a lot in recent times as performance improves with price point. Where the first models came with touch as a necessity, now most of them are saving in costs by avoiding the touch screen features and putting the money to better use in the processor. I’d actively dissuade anyone from buying a touch screen laptop or desktop in the £400 - £600 price category. This would only come at the cost of performance and I know which I would prefer. The choice of processor is still largely limited to AMD or Intel, with a multitude of

Memorial - Bridge of Weir and the First World War 100 years ago this month – July 1915 Alister Duff, 7th Cameronians (Scottish Rifles) The Gallipoli campaign had begun in April 1915 but it was July before news of the first fatality from Bridge of Weir reached home. The victim was Second Lieutenant Alister Duff the son of James Duff and Mary Deans. Alister was born in Corrievreck, Montrose Terrace. His father owned MacLeay Duff & Co, spirit merchants in Glasgow. The business was successful, and Alister was sent to the High School of Glasgow. Both father and son had easy commutes to Glasgow by rail. In its heyday, a sea of bowler hats could be seen descending Prieston Road bound for the morning train. Sometime after 1901 the family moved to Kelvinside (employing three domestic servants) and by 1911 Alister was 23, and established in the family business as an export clerk. He was also a Territorial in the 7th Scottish Rifles (later known as The Cameronians) and was mobilised within a week of war being declared. The battalion formed part of the 156th Brigade in the 52nd (Lowland) Division and was billeted in Falkirk. By law, Territorials could only be used for home defence, so complete units were asked to volunteer for service overseas, and the majority of men duly did. By May 1915, the Gallipoli campaign already needed reinforcements and the battalion sailed from Liverpool landing at Cape Helles, Gallipoli on 14 June. Alister Duff died on 28 June, just two weeks later, in the Battle of Gully Ravine. ‘When the command to attack rang out, away dashed the first line over perfectly open grass and moorland, right in the full blast of a tempest of fire from front and flank’. Despite this, the brigade was ordered to press the attack and the support and reserve lines were sent in. By the time the attack was halted, 800 had been killed, 475 wounded and 156th Brigade was at half strength -eleven months’ training for a few hours of slaughter. Most of the officers of the 7th and 8th Cameronians were killed and losses in other ranks were so high that the two battalions had to be merged into one. After the war, James and his two daughters Nelly and Moira kept their seven businesses, including Macleay Duff & Co., trading until 1933, when they wound them up. Nelly and Moira never married. James worked on till he was 84. Read more about Alister’s life and untimely death at http://www. bridgeofweirmemorial.co.uk

The Game of Bullets A long-forgotten, ancient game played throughout Renfrewshire as early as the seventeenth century was the game of bullets. Two opposing teams each had an iron ball with a maximum weight of two pounds. The object of the game was to throw this ‘bullet’ in as few shots as possible over a measured distance. The ‘bullet’ was thrown underhand and allowed to roll after it fell to the ground. A second ran ahead advising the player where to aim his ‘bullet’. The game seems to have included elements of bowling, curling and golf - games which later became popular in the county. Wagers were placed on the outcome of bullet matches. In 1674 William Cunninghame recorded among the expenses in his Diary a sum of four shillings ‘lost at Bullets among our servants’. Bullets was a highly dangerous ball game, especially as it was played along public roads. A Lochwinnoch bulleteer named Ramsey met his death playing bullets in 1683. However, despite the danger, this traditional sport continued in Renfrewshire until the mid-nineteenth century. In 1902 some older residents in Kilbarchan remembered bullet matches being played in their youth. Bullets was also a popular game with the Paisley weavers. Duncan McNeil who had worked as a drawboy for a shawl weaver in Charleston, near Paisley, in the early 1840s mentions weavers playing bullets in his poem, ‘When I was a Drawboy’ ‘They were a’ their ain masters - they hadna a boss Some played at the bullets, some played pitch-and-toss. Some had great cock-battles, an’ some foucht their dogs;…. When I was a drawboy.’ Crowds of spectators gathered to support their local team and placed wagers on the outcome of a bullet match. One venue was on Gleniffer Road leading from Paisley to Caldwell. The old Peesweep Inn, built some time after 1810, stood near where the road from Johnstone meets Gleniffer Road and it was no doubt a place of refreshment for the bulleteers and spectators from Paisley. By 1922 the old inn had closed but an old lady who still lived there had fond memories of the game. She had in her possession some of the iron balls, or ‘bullets’ which had been used in the local matches and proudly displayed them to visitors. What was possibly the last bulleting match in Renfrewshire took place in 1846 on the Beith Road, from where the four roads met at Damside Cottage (the old toll cottage) towards Quarrelton. The opposing teams were from Kilbarchan and Paisley. Four famous bulleteers John Hunter, a silk handloom weaver in Stirling Street, William Brown, a silk handloom weaver in Ewing Street, Alexander Meikle, a silk handloom weaver in Barholm and James Houston made up the Missed something or fancy Kilbarchan team. Soon after this taking a look back over the match early health and safety last 8 years? considerations prevailed and visit www.advertizer.co.uk the traditional game of bullets was banned. Descendants of or Alexander Meikle still live in Klbarchan today. A game similar to bullets, but known as Kyles, http://free.yudu.com/library/18833/Gryffe-Advertizer-issues was also played in Fife. ©2015 Helen Calcluth, Renfrewshire Local History Forum

Erskine Bridge road markings Scotland TranServ’s contractor, Highway Barrier Solutions have carried out the reinstatement of road markings on the A898 Erskine Bridge. This project comes as part of an overall £4m investment from Transport Scotland in the maintenance of the A898 Erskine Bridge, over the next 12 months, to improve the long term resilience of this structure for generations to come. Gordon Wilson, contract director, Scotland TranServ said: “It is essential that we reinstate the white line markings on the A898 Erskine Bridge to ensure the safety of over 42,000 motorists using this route each day. “We understand the importance of this route and its links between Glasgow and Loch Lomond and the Trossachs therefore we have done everything we can to programme the works overnight when traffic flows are lighter; therefore ensuring delays are minimal.” Motorists can keep up to date with real time traffic information by visiting the Traffic Scotland website and following their Twitter feed.
licence counterpart abolished Drivers need to plan ahead if hiring a car at home or abroad The paper counterpart to the photocard driving licence was abolished on 8 June 2015 and information about penalty points will now only be held on DVLA’s online driver record. This change does not affect paper driving licences issued before the photocard was introduced in 1998, nor does it affect licences issued by DVA in Northern Ireland where the counterpart remains a valid and legal part of the licence. More than a third of drivers who have hired a car abroad in the past five years have been asked to show their photocard driving licence paper counterpart. The document showed a driver’s record, including offences and endorsements, but has now been abolished.
Belt and braces Although the paper counterpart has been rendered invalid, the AA is advising its members not to tear up their counterparts just yet, but to take them abroad as a ‘belt and braces’ measure if they intend to hire a vehicle. It is possible that hirers overseas, who have been used to checking a British driver’s paper record in the past, may not know of the change and still ask to see the counterpart.
AA advice Anticipating that some car hire companies overseas may not immediately be aware of this change, the AA recommends that you retain your paper counterpart if you intend hiring a car abroad.
Additionally you should: Print your own driving licence record from DVLA’s website - you’ll need to know your driving licence number, national insurance number and your home address post code. Obtain a code from the DVLA’s ‘share driving licence’ service that you can pass to a third party (employer, hire car company). The code will only be valid for 72 hours and will give them one-off access to your online driving licence record to verify the printed copy. Make a note of your national insurance number if intending to hire a car more than 72 hours into an overseas holiday. For advice on all aspects of motoring, please visit www.theaa.com

Christian Aid Week record collection! Thank you, Bridge of Weir! The annual Christian Aid Week house-to-house collection took place from 10–16 May. Three churches working together (St Machar’s Ranfurly, Freeland and St Mary’s); 60 volunteers collectors; 16 volunteer counters; and, crucially, over 900 generous households in Bridge of Weir ready and willing to help those in need. A record amount of £6,077 was collected. This amount, surpassing even last year’s record and nearly 60% of this total was supported by Gift Aid declarations, which will generate a further £860. Christian Aid tackles poverty by responding to emergencies, funding long term development and challenging the unjust systems that make people poor and keep people poor. Christian Aid helps people of all faiths or none. It is a signatory to the Code of Conduct for Red Cross and NGO’s in Disaster Relief which sets international ethical standards for aid work and, among other things, promises that aid will not be used to further a particular political or religious standpoint. Thank you again. Your support is helping to rebuild people’s lives.
Bridge of Weir Community Council Whitelint Gate The Community Council held their final meeting prior to the summer recess with the overhanging issue of the awaited pre-planning public exhibition for the major development at the Whitelint Gate site. Having heard from the developer’s agent no date has yet been set and no indication as to when this might happen. The only restriction the developer has is they must give a minimum of seven days’ prior notice and advertise the event in the press. This will be advertised on the Community Council Facebook page as soon as it is known and we will arrange for posters around the Village.
Shillingworth Place The Shillingworth planning application for 43 houses by Persimmon Homes has not yet completed its journey through the planning system.
Thankfully Bridge of Weir Gala Day was mostly dry and everyone seemed to have a good day. Not so for Lilias Day and the Houston Show the previous weekend and I sympathise with their treasurers. The village is looking marvellous at the moment what with all the work from Brighter Bridge of Weir but also the tree works at St Machar’s Ranfurly Church. At a recent Audit, Scrutiny and Petitions Board meeting, members considered which issues the Board would consider for inclusion in its next annual programme of reviews. I am pleased to say that the Board agreed to include all my suggestions which included a review of the new Brookfield speed limit. Some of my other suggestions requested reviews on dealing with fly tipping and with Japanese knotweed. We will also be looking at the effectiveness of Fair Trade. Lead officers will be appointed to consider all of the topics and prepare reports outlining the possible scope and terms of reference of specific investigations and suggest individuals, agencies and organisations who might be invited to contribute to the investigations. GIRLS OUTDOORS!
Kilmacolm Dramatics 'Mother Goose' With the controversy & great success of ‘Allo Allo' behind us now, we are about to leap into action on our pantomime which will take place in the Kidston Hall, Kilmacolm on 26th, 27th & 28th November. We have chosen ‘Mother Goose’, and by the time you read this, auditions will have taken place, the show should be cast and we should be heading into rehearsal. I started by mentioning ‘Allo Allo' and thanks to the incredible generosity of our audiences and some handsome programme sponsorship from Gill & Mark at Durham Professional Services, we were able to present a cheque for £800 to Erskine, which we hope will make life a little sweeter for the residents. Community Spirit and hard work have gone a long way in providing Girlguiding in Kilmacolm with a great outdoor space. The Kilmacolm Guide Hut Committee are absolutely delighted with the results so far which will enable the girls to enjoy a large lawn garden and colourful attractive camp fire immediately outside their hut.
Again, thanks to everyone who contributed to raising the money. I look forward to seeing you all in November. Angus
Huge thanks are due to many for maintaining a low budget for the work, firstly the council kindly cleared the area last Easter when the weeds were higher than the Rainbows! During last year weed killing was done by John Watt from Glenmoss Landscapes, several times as we unfortunately had some persistent blighters. From Easter of this year a large thank you to many for some back breaking efforts to turn the soil over and prepare for grass seed with the help of Inverclyde Duke of Edinburgh Volunteers and it’s support group and the Families Cowling, Cumming, McMinn, Robertson and Sayers. Alex Peebles Landscape Contractors were very generous with their time helping us move the clothes bin, lay a patio and set up pillars for the benches. Thanks also to Neil Wilson of Boundaries we have a fence to contain the girls whilst playing. Also to our delight we have had hedge plants donated by the Woodland Trust, an apple tree donated by Fiona Clarke and hundreds of bulbs from “colourful Kilmacolm”. Last but by no means least we issue a huge thank you to Neil and Joanne Wright and John Smith Turf, Midhouse, Kilbarchan who have provided us with turf for a significant area and will grass seed the rest if the summer ever comes. Our thanks also to the brownies and guides and their parents who have turned out at various times to do some gardening. This has all been helped with grants from Youth Scotland’s “Grow Wild” and Inverclyde Council as well as our own fundraising with a coffee morning and afternoon tea in the last six months. Thank you to all those who supported this venture in so many ways……Now we just need the weather to get out and use it!

London to Barcelona... in 10 days! Local lass, Lorna Carson and 4 others are attempting to cycle from London to Barcelona in 10 days. This is a challenge of a lifetime, covering a distance of over 1665km (1040 miles), averaging over 150km each day on road bikes and taking in two of the toughest mountain stages of the Tour de France, Mont Ventoux (1912 m) in the French Alps and the Col du Tourmalet (2115m) in the Pyrenees.
kilmacolm ..................................................... & quarriers Thankfully I was able to attend some council and community events/meetings in June following my recent discharge from hospital. It was great to return to council duties, though, I had been warned to ease my way back and so sadly I had to curtail what I was able to attend. In June there are always a number of school shows and events to attend and while I was pleased that I was able to attend a few, sadly I had to miss others. It is always a joy to attend school and community events. Indeed I find it one of the most enjoyable parts of being a councillor. Recently I received another complaint about speeding vehicles on Port Glasgow Road in Kilmacolm which I again passed on to the police and the council roads services to look into. The 30mph speed sign was recently put back up, though, one constituent has suggested to me that there are alternative road signs which show the speed motorists are driving at and are used very successfully elsewhere. I have asked the council roads services to consider this proposal as this type of road sign could be more effective in reducing speeding on Port Glasgow Road. Sadly again, I received a complaint concerning some St Columba’s School parents parking over residents driveways on Park Road. This is a matter that has been raised with me before and which I highlighted in a previous edition of the Advertizer. I would urge any parents who are parking their cars on Park Road or indeed beside any school, not to park over residents driveways. I know none of us would like this to happen to ourselves. Last month I had the pleasure of attending an employability event at Greenock cinema which was organised by the local organisation Reach for Autism. The presentation at the cinema highlighted the extremely low percentage of people with autism of working age who are in employment, less than 15%. A film was screened at the event showing some of the barriers that people with autism face in trying to secure employment and a number of disabled people spoke of their own personal experiences of looking for work and several of being in employment. It highlighted that more must be done to assist disabled people into work by government, local authorities and employers. Now that the schools have closed for the holidays I would like to wish everyone a nice summer and hope that those of you who are managing to get away for a week or two that you have a great break and for those staying closer to home that we have warm and sunny weather. My next surgeries in July will be advertised in the local press and on my surgery posters. Alternatively constituents can also contact me by emailing me at jim.macleod@ inverclyde.gov.uk, phoning me at my office on 01475712727 or on my mobile 07747 765 839 or writing to me at the Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, PA15 1LZ.

Lorna told The Advertizer, “This is a monumentous challenge for me as up until two years ago I was 16 stone and in the year following lost 6 1/2 stone through healthy eating and training in the gym.” Lorna completed the West Highland Way last year over 2 days on a mountain bike, having not been on a bike since she was a child! She continued, “In November last year I bought a road bike and committed to taking part in this challenge, which up until a year ago would never have been physically possible.” “The charity I’m raising money for is Yorkhill hospital as it is an extremely worthy charity close to everyone’s heart. We all know family, friends or loved ones who have benefited from and rely on the wonderful work they do helping sick children not only in Glasgow and the West but throughout Scotland.” If you would like to help Lorna’s London to Barcelona challenge, the facebook page is Cycle London to Barcelona 2015 and the just giving link is https://www.justgiving.com/CycleLondon2Barcelona2015
Council Leads the Way for Recycle Week Inverclyde Council is helping residents take up the recycling challenge as part of this year’s Recycle Week campaign. The Council will be holding information sessions where people can pick up useful promotional items and learn about the many recycling options available in Inverclyde. Environment & Regeneration Convener Councillor Michael McCormick said: “Inverclyde’s kerbside recycling service is widely acknowledged as one of the best in the UK and we also offer an excellent range of facilities at our recycling centres making it easy to support this year’s theme of ‘Recycling Around the Home’. Councillor McCormick dropped in to meet local mum-of-three Kirsty Madden and her children Josh aged 11, Jamie aged 8 and 6 year old Karis who are all enthusiastic recyclers. Kirsty said: “The children enjoy learning about recycling at school and are happy to keep me right regarding which bins I should be using.” Councillor McCormick a d d e d : “ Tr a d i t i o n a l l y this is the time of year when people start to think about doing some work around the home and garden so it’s great to see Kirsty and the children making good use of their recycling containers. I am hoping Recycle Week will encourage everyone to recycle all their unwanted household materials.”
Recycling information sessions take place on Thursday 25 June at Kilmacolm Library, Kilmacolm: 2.30pm to 4pm and on Friday 26 June at Port Glasgow Library, Port Glasgow: 10am to 12pm. The Recycling Helpline Number is 01475 715901.

Thanks go to Ruby, Eleanor, Ranald, Leon, Jaden and Ali from P5 at KPS who with the Jannie accompanied me on a litter pick in Duchal Woods. Over the years litter had blown from the rear playground through the fence into the woods. Lord McLay is very generous in the use of his land for the benefit of villagers and the least we could do was the litter pick. The pupils worked very hard and did a super job. I was rather concerned about the amount of dog poo in the woods. I would point out that nurseries and schools use the Avenues for educational and outdoor activities for youngsters and there is a bin at the entrance which is regularly emptied by the Council. In my role as Depute Provost I attended the opening ceremony of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, the 100th birthday celebrations of Mrs Doreen Lang and the 70th anniversary of the Waverley. All venerable institutions in their own right. The Rev John Chalmers the outgoing Moderator gave a heartfelt report on his busy year, including a Civic reception in his honour at the Municipal Buildings in Greenock, as part of his visit to the Presbytery of Greenock and Paisley. The Waverley is only just older than me and it was a delight to be part of her Ruby Anniversary celebrations. It took me years to work out as a small boy what it meant “ that the dads were off to see the engines” on whatever Clyde Steamer we were travelling on! The bar was always in the depths of the ship. Mrs Doreen Lang was surrounded with her family, and Colin Brown did the presentation of the card from her Majesty and I flowers and a card from the Provost. A happy day. With my colleague Councillor James McLaren from Renfrewshire we attended the Licensing of the Reverend Heller Gonzalez as Associate Priest for St Mary’s Bridge of Weir, St Fillan’s Kilmacolm and St Mary’s Port Glasgow , the Heartlands Episcopal churches in our area. The Bishop of Glasgow and Galloway conducted the special service at a busy St Mary’s in Port Glasgow with representatives and clergy from many congregations. I was able to meet many constituents from both Port Glasgow and Kilmacolm at the buffet lunch following the ceremony. I attended the Port Glasgow High School annual music concert and also their presentation of the musical 'Singing in the Rain'. Both were quite excellent and further enhanced the school’s fine reputation for music. The two male leads in the latter, both ex KPS, Reiss Armstrong and Adam Docherty, danced, tapped and sang to a high standard and the whole cast received a massive ovation from a full house. My surgeries are 18th July Cargil 10-11am and July 27th The Kafay Dubbs Road 10-11am. I can be contacted on david.wilson@inverclyde.gov.uk and 01475 741969 and 712727 and 07766 992294
Kilmacolm Parking Reprieve
Following meetings with the public and traders and a 700 named petition, Inverclyde Council has agreed to make alterations to the parking restrictions in Kilmacolm. 95% of shopkeepers had reported a drop in takings since Inverclyde Council took over the policing of parking in the village from Police Scotland last autumn. The main change, amongst others, will be to extend the 30 minute waiting period to 2 hours. The village has a butcher, fishmonger/fruit and vegetable, hardware, baker, post office, newsagent, flower, electrician, gift, hairdresser, alterations, dry cleaning, ladies clothes, bridal, chemist, beautician and travel shops, plus a bank and seven coffee parlours. 30 minutes was simply not enough time to enjoy the retail offer. Many small towns do not have the range that Kilmacolm has and we have a duty to help not hinder our traders. Cllr David Wilson said, "I am happy to have instigated the petition, and thank all who signed, including a significant number from our neighbouring Renfrewshire Villages. The village is very different from Port Glasgow, Greenock and Gourock and needs to be treated as such."

Kilmacolm French Day resounding success...despite the rain! Both of us had the pleasure of attending the French Day in Kilmacolm on Saturday 6 June - a very apt date - organised by the Twinning Society. Apart from the Waiters’ Race having to be cancelled due to the poor weather, it was a great way to welcome the young people and their teachers from Mérignies. With a good turnout of residents and the presence of a number of groups and organisations the event showed the strong sense of community within the village. It was a pleasure to speak to the young people and teachers from Mérignies who were very complementary about the warm welcome and hospitality given by locals around the village. In the last few weeks the Council has been carrying out major improvements to the A761 Kilmacolm to Bridge of Weir Road at a cost of over £300,000. The first phase of the project involved extensive drainage improvements on the north side of the A761 to reduce the damage being caused to the carriageway each year due to heavy rainfall. The second phase was complete carriageway reconstruction from the B788 Milton Road at the Knapps to the boundary with Renfrewshire. Well done to Kilmacolm’s Guides and Brownies on the work they and their helpers have carried out to transform the land adjacent to the Guide Hut into recreational space suitable for camping, BBQ’s and many other activities. The Council supported the initiative by granting permission to use the land and by undertaking an initial clear up to allow the project to get underway. These sorts of projects wouldn’t happen if it wasn’t for the sheer commitment and determination of many people in the community and they must be commended for their great work.
The Kilmacolm French Day was a resounding success despite the driving rain and wind that caused the cancellation of other fetes and galas across the region. Over 300 spectators gathered in the Cargill Centre to watch St Columbas Pipe Band kick off the festivities with a rousing set that had our French visitors on their feet! Provost Moran offered a warm speech of welcome (including some lines in French!) to the S4 pupils from Mérignies accompanied by our local councillors. Speeches of welcome were followed by a wonderful performance in French by the children’s choir, “Angel Voices”. Teachers accompanying the French group were visibly moved by a repertoire that included age-old French children’s songs. Meanwhile the village was abuzz with children taking part in the French quiz in which objects relating to France were hidden in the beautifullydecorated shop windows. The cafés and restaurants were also French for a day with French onion soup, crepes, snails and croques monsieurs all on the menus. A big thank-you goes to Glasgow Airport Flightpath Trust who granted major financial support for the day. The Trust recognised that the French Day and our vision for the twinning process promotes initiatives in key areas such as, enhancing youth employment prospects through linguistic development and work experience exchanges between our French and Scottish communities. The Kilmacolm- Mérignies Twinning Society has created the “Glasgow Airport Flightpath Trophy” to commemorate the support offered by the Trust
QE2 to Greenock?
Similarly school shows don’t happen without a lot of effort from a lot of people. We had the pleasure of attending the shows at Kilmacolm Primary and both local high schools during June and were delighted by the quality of the talent on display. Again well done to the pupils and all of those who helped them put on such great shows.
Reports online say that the QE2, which was built on the Clyde and fitted out in Greenock, is languishing in a dock in Dubai and could be up for sale.
We hope you have a fantastic summer!
Inverclyde Council’s Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe is calling for national support to explore bringing the QE2 home to the Clyde and Greenock.

Inverclyde Council Leader, Councillor Stephen McCabe, said: “The QE2 is an important piece of maritime history for the Clyde and Greenock. She was known as the most famous and grandest liner in the world. To see this once magnificent flagship of the Cunard line languishing in a dock in Dubai is simply heart-breaking.
Bonjour from java minute
The staff at Java Minute in Kilmacolm embracing the occasion of the recent French day and having fun. Lorna Mcgarrity and Olivia Mosin in the picture.
“Given the reception just a few short weeks ago to the Queen Mary 2 on the 175th anniversary of Cunard on the Clyde, it is clear that the QE2 could be a major draw for visitors to Inverclyde and Scotland. That could be a major boost to the growing reputation we have for cruise ships and for tourism. It could also boost the promotion of the Clyde and Inverclyde’s proud maritime history to a national and, potentially, international audience. “Bringing the QE2 home is a herculean task, but it is one that requires national support in Scotland and perhaps across the UK, if it has any chance of happening. Officers will make contact with the Dubai Government to find out the exact position, to find out if the reports on her condition are accurate and if she is actually for sale. “I will be writing to the First Minister, The Minister for Business, Energy and Tourism at the Scottish Government, and our MP and MSPs serving the Inverclyde area to call on them to use their influence through parliamentary motions in both parliaments to secure support and sources of national funding to bring the QE2 home.”

The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland is intending to conduct a public consultation between July and October 2015 on their proposals for changes to Renfrewshire’s Local Government Ward areas. The proposal is to increase the number of Council Wards in Renfrewshire from 11 to 13 thus requiring changes to the current boundaries. At present Ward 9 comprises the villages of Houston, Crosslee, Brookfield and Linwood, however the draft proposal would split Houston with only Craigends estate and Linwood in a separate Ward (11) represented by 3 Councillors, Brookfield would move into another Ward (10) including Bridge of Weir, Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch, and Howwood.and the remainder of Houston and Crosslee in a new Ward (12) along with Bishopton, Langbank and a section of Erskine represented by 3 Councillors. The Commission want public responses to these draft proposals to allow them to submit their final recommendations to Scottish Ministers by May 2016. Please e mail to comments@scottishboundaries.gov.uk. At the recent Local Area Board a grant of £10,000 was approved for additional equipment and renewal of existing resources so that young people from our area can engage in the local Duke of Edinburgh programme. £6000 was agreed for access improvements to Crosslee Park to provide all weather access to the play equipment from a safe access point on Whirlie Road. Two other Houston groups were granted a total of £3000 however Brookfield Community Council’s application for a grant of £2000 to purchase a Defibrillator and storage box was continued to allow further investigation of alternative funding sources. Seven Linwood groups received grants totalling over £28,000

..................................................... Brookfield Village Council Brookfield’s Summer Social was held in the field in relatively clement weather on Sunday 14th June. A good time was had by all who attended and it was lovely to see both new and old faces attending. The stars of the show were A Close Shave, a wonderful group of barber shop singers who serenaded us with a great number of songs, including Build me up Buttercup and There is Nothing like a Dame. More events like this are to follow, so please keep an eye on all our usual advertising spaces, www.brookfieldvillage.org, Facebook, Brookfield Village and Twitter @BrookfieldVPA. We are now gearing up for our Gala Day on the new date of 22nd August and will be trying out a few new and different ideas this year, so please come along.
Houston Carnival Day Success The Houston Kirk Carnival for 2015 gloried in a fine sunny day, which brought crowds in great numbers and helped raise a wonderful sum towards the Kirk Extension Project. Our latest figure is £13,541.53 – a huge tribute to the efforts of the many volunteers who worked hard and gave their time and the members of the Kirk Carnival Committee’s months of planning and organising the day!

Carnival Queen Emily Robb, and her attendants Jennifer Boyd and Sarah Kelly were perfect in their roles, from the parade to the West Hall in open topped vintage car, to the crowning ceremony and their presence throughout the afternoon. Those who wore fancy dress so creatively on the day helped project our Grand Designs theme and the Boys and Girls Brigade Pipe Band led the parade with their usual verve. So many people had a role and the many who attended all contributed to the huge total raised. Our thanks go to all involved, as The Kirk Extension comes into use and increasingly demonstrates its importance for the Church and the Community.
Dentist of the Year 2015 Samuel Barry Lemon, won Dentist of the Year 2015 at the Scottish Dental Awards on Friday 29th May and is over the moon. The ceremony took place at the Thistle Hotel and was presented by Tam Cowan. Samuel runs a practice in Lochwinnoch called Bluewater Dental and has done since July 2014. Samuel, 30, graduated in 2008 from Dundee University and spent the following four years at Kirriemuir Dental Practice. It was during this time that his natural approach to treating nervous patients and children shone through. Most recently, Samuel practised closer to his home town in Bangor at Clandeboye Dental Practice where his ability to rebuild confidence in patients while delivering an extremely high standard of dental care was continued. In August 2014 Barry and Francesca were delighted to take ownership of Bluewater Dental and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of our new patients. In his spare time, Barry enjoys rugby, skiing and is a keen martial artist. On winning the award, Samuel said the following : “I am so amazed and chuffed to win this award. Moving to Scotland and starting up a practice before the age of 30 was scary but my patients and amazing team of nurses have made this year the best ever and to win this award is just amazing!”

kilbarchan ..................................................... & lochwinnoch Members of Kilbarchan community council have been monitoring the activity at Kilbarchan quarry, and have been instrumental in setting up and attending a liaison group with the operators Ceemex, Renfrewshire councils planning department, and local councillors. I attended the liaison meeting in May, where the issues of noise, traffic and operating times which have been concerns for some time were among the items discussed. This dialogue will help to keep the interests of the village and in particular those residents of Branscroft, Park Gardens, and Park View at the top of the agenda, while allowing operations to be undertaken. Particular thanks are due to David Blair, Jim Curran, and Ken Ives for their continued vigilance. Thanks is also due to Gail Scoular Renfrewshire wardens for arranging the painting of the old gasworks wall, the state of which was raised me, and is now looking vastly improved. Kilbarchan is a great place to live, but we do have an issue with litter. At the May meeting of the community council I suggested that a litter pick /clean up day might be considered Renfrewshire council cannot always respond to entirely alleviate the problems, I know that the scouts and others have been active in doing this over the years and it would be good to have more people involved. The council will provide whatever is needed bags etc. Please let me have your views. Parking signs have now been erected to highlight the car park at the rear Ewing Street. It is to be hoped that this will encourage visitors to use it. At the time of writing work is due to start in Lochwinnoch to resurface Lochlip Road which is the beginning of this years programme of repairs in Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan.

Kilbarchan Fair Trade At the June meeting it was agreed that a donation of £100 should be made to Rainbow Turtle, Paisley, to facilitate their work with fair trade suppliers. The next meeting of the group will be at 8pm on Tuesday September 8th, in the Ladies’ Room at the Steeple. If you are interested in helping create work and opportunities for people in the developing world, and in ensuring that they achieve a fair price for their labour, please feel free to come along and meet the group. Like all the village organisations the group’s plans for a stall on Lilias Day were put on hold.
Lochwinnoch footpath reopens after upgrading A popular footpath linking the village of Lochwinnoch to its railway station and the nearby RSPB nature reserve has been reopened after extensive improvements. The footpath which runs alongside the A760 is part of the well-established Castle Semple Trail. It is well used by train passengers, walkers and birdwatchers but in the past has been liable to flooding from nearby Castle Semple Loch and Barr Loch. By raising the level of the footpath by almost one metre in some places, the new path will now be less likely to flood. Councillor Eddie Devine, convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment Policy Board, said: “We are pleased that significant improvements have been made to the path and that the work has been completed. “Once again local residents and visitors have a convenient route between the village and the railway station and the RSPB’s visitor centre.”
Finally at the most recent Johnstone and villages local area committee I was pleased to support grants to a number of local organisations including Kilbarchan singers Kilbarchan guides and Lochwinnoch arts festival and art group. I was also pleased to support the funding for the Mary Barbour cairn which Kilbarchan readers will know has been long in the planning. I will not be holding surgeries in July My next surgeries will be on Saturday 1 August at 9am in the McKillop Institute and 10am at the Steeple Hall Kilbarchan I will however be continuing to work over the summer so please do get in touch at cllr.derek. bibby@renfrewshire.gov.uk or phone 0300 300 1274 or 07534156007 I hope that all Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch folk have a good summer.

The Old Library Centre, Kilbarchan How cruel can the weather be? Our sympathy goes out to the Lilias Day Committee and to the majority of the Village who were involved in any way. The Committee made the right decision but it must have been very hard to make. The Old Library Centre Team have taken down the window decoration but we are looking forward to the Lilias Day Committee decision about the next date. The Centre team are looking forward to our holiday. The Centre is closed for the month of July and will re-open on Tuesday, 4th August. We hope to have our events timetable available in August. We will have yoga, pilates, bridge, solving your computing problems, family history, craft group, book group, hire of rooms and our usual drop in for a chat and a cuppa. We hope to run classes in Computing and are awaiting information from West College Scotland. Our www.kipcokil.com will give you details as soon as we have them. Following Sally Buxton's sell-out evening on the18th June, we are asking if she is willing to come again to satisfy the waiting list which we have. If we arrange a date it will be posted on our web. The Team hope that our regular visitors have a good summer holiday and that we will see them and perhaps you in August. My thanks go to the Board members, our staff, all our volunteers, our supporters. Attendees at groups and classes and drop-in visitors without these people the Centre would not function.
Kilbarchan NWR During the months of July and August the group members are taking a break with the new session beginning on Wednesday 26th August. The National Conference in June was a great success, attended by 260 delegates from groups all over Britain.
e: info@advertizer.co.uk The two gala days that serve both Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch are central to the life of both historic communities and serve both as a major fundraiser for community groups, and also give both villages a positive sense of themselves and a collective sense of self worth. Therefore, it is with great sadness that Lilias Day had to be cancelled due to inclement weather. The Organisers obviously had to put the safety of the public first and that is only right and proper.
The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland are in the process of publicising their draft proposals for new council ward boundaries across the country, including here in Renfrewshire. Currently villages such as Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch are connected to the Johnstone town centre area called Johnstone North, which has three Councillors. Other such as Howwood and Elderslie are connected to the peripheral areas around Johnstone town centre known as Johnstone South, which has four Councillors. Now it is proposed to put the whole of Johnstone in one multi member ward with four Cllrs, and create a new separate ward which has Bridge of Weir, Kilbarchan, Lochwinnoch, Howwood, and Brookfield in it, also with four Cllrs. The Commission want public responses to these draft idea between July and October 2015, please e mail comments@scottishboundaries. gov.uk. Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park is one of the great assets in the West of Scotland, and it is a privilege to serve as a Park Authority member. At the last Park Authority meeting I proposed two ideas for the diversification of the Park which were accepted in principle, firstly, to look at the idea of promoting Clyde Muirshiel as a Centre for spiritual retreats for those of all faiths and none, and secondly, to look at hosting the opening stage of the Tour de France to promote both the beauty of the park and of the Lochwinnoch area. Nothing stands still and we need to be ambitious for the future. My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7.45pm, and my advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm, excluding July. But I am also always available to constituents who can call me on 07534 148224, tweet me on CllrAndy4Ward8 or e-mail me at cllr.andy.doig@ renfrewshire.gov.uk.
Village Rallies Lilias Day Support Kilbarchan continued to show its support for Lilias Day after the historic parade and festival had to be called off in response to adverse weather conditions. The organisers have been inundated with messages of goodwill following the difficult decision not to go ahead with the event after concerns about public safety due to high winds. After the decision was announced on Facebook, the post was seen by more than 50,000 people and the page had more than 400 new likes in a single day.
Weaver’s Cottage The Weaver’s Cottage (National Trust for Scotland) was busy throughout June. More local people than usual have dropped in and there have been visitors from the Netherlands, the U.S.A., Australia and New Zealand. Photographed enjoying the June sunshine and investigating the 18th century cheese press were
Festivities continued throughout the village with barbecues and parties taking place as planned. One of the village pubs, The Trust Inn, organised a last minute beach party which proved very popular and a campaign has been set up by a Kilbarchan resident to raise funds to help cover the financial losses on the day. The organising committee was also keen that the day was still celebrated in some way and a crowd of well-wishers turned out for the traditional visit to Steeple Square in the evening. Kilbarchan Pipe band led the procession and the new Miss Lilias, Victoria Thomson carried out her first duty by crowning the school queen, Millie Spence. Victoria also drew the £1000 prize raffle which was won by young Kilbarchan couple, Alan Docherty and Katie Gallagher who, along with their two children, had their prize presented by the school queen - the couple plan to get married next year and may use the money to put towards the wedding. School Queen - Millie Spence Miss Lilias - Victoria Thomson
Chairman, Graeme Stockton, commented: “We were truly overwhelmed by the messages and support we’ve had. It was such a hard decision not to go ahead but we had to put the safety of the public first. There was still a great atmosphere around the village as the people of Kilbarchan found other ways to celebrate the day and continued with their social plans regardless. It shows a real sense of community spirit which is really what Lilias Day is all about. It’s given us a real boost to make the next Lilias Day even bigger and better!”

kilbarchan & lochwinnoch ..................................................... Kilbarchan - July 1915 Acting Corporal Archibald Crawford, died on 9th July 1915 at Leith Fort, serving with the 2/6th Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, which was a training and garrison battalion. Archie was 20 and before the war had worked as a stockbroker’s clerk. In 1911 the family lived at 5 Easwald Bank. He is buried in Kilbarchan cemetery. Two men fell at Gallipoli on 12th July, 1915. Private Herbert Sandbach, aged 19, was killed in action with the 6th Highland Light Infantry, 52nd (Lowland) Division. In 1901 Herbert was 5 and lived with parents in the Gardener’s House at Penwold, where his father was a domestic coachman. In 1905 the family appear to have been at 20 Easwald Bank. Herbert has no record of army service. Robert Struthers was a private in the 7th Cameronians, 52nd (Lowland) Division. In 1911 he was working as an office boy in Govanhill, Glasgow. The only direct evidence of a Kilbarchan association is in the 1891 census when his father Robert, a farm servant, was living at Burntshields Cottage. His wife and their first son were born in Kilbarchan. A day later, on 13th July 1915, Major David Easson, 6th Highland Light Infantry, 52nd (Lowland) Division was killed. The family lived at Meadside House in 1895 but was in Restenneth on the Branscroft in 1915. (Opposite the quarry road) Major Easson worked for the family business in King St, Mile End, Bridgeton. None of these men have graves, but are remembered on the Helles Memorial. (photo by Stark Images)
Kilbarchan East Church Open Days As in the last few years, Kilbarchan East Church, Steeple Square, will be open to visit on Tuesdays from 2pm-4pm during the months of July and August for those who wish a quiet time and to enjoy the grounds of the 230 year old building.
Summer Songs in Kilbarchan Kilbarchan’s Ladies Choir, ‘Village Voices ‘and’ Kilbarchan East Church Junior Choir’ presented their summer programme to an enthusiastic audience during their summer concert on Saturday 30 May in Kilbarchan East Church. A most enjoyable evening was had by all. The repertoire included light classics, spiritual and show songs. Both choirs are now in recess for the summer but new members are most welcome to come along in August to join us. The Kilbarchan East Church Junior Choir is happy to welcome choristers from Kilbarchan or any of the surrounding villages. Currently the ages of the children range from 5 - 14 years of age. The Choir meets on a Monday evening from 6pm to 7.15pm in Kilbarchan East Church Hall in Steeple Square. All children are welcome regardless of skill level or perceived potential. There are no fees charged. The Choir will resume rehearsals on Monday 17 August. Village Voices has been performing successfully since May 2013. We have around 35 choristers, currently, and we have members ranging in age from 20 - 60+ years of age. Anyone who is interested in singing and fun, regardless of age or choral experience, is welcome. The main aims of the choir are: to make music, to enjoy singing and each other’s company. There is no requirement to read music. The group are a very friendly bunch of ladies who like to laugh and are very welcoming to new members. Many of our ladies come from surrounding areas such as Bridge of Weir, Houston, Howwood, Johnstone and Paisley Rehearsals take place on Tuesday Evenings in Kilbarchan East Church from 7.30pm - 9.30pm. Currently choristers pay £30 twice a year to cover the cost of hall hire and the purchase of sheet music. There are no other charges. Village Voices resumes rehearsals on Tuesday 18 August. Lilias Day Organisers Start Planning For 2016 Following the cancellation of this years festival due to adverse weather, the Lilias Day organising committee will focus their attention on the 2016 event to ensure its long term future. Graeme Stockton, chair of the Lilias Day Committee, said: “After a careful assessment of both financial and human resources it became clear that we don’t have the time, manpower or funds to re-organise the event again this year. We will therefore refocus our efforts on ensuring we are in a financially stable position and operationally prepared to ensure an even bigger and better event next year. We have been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and understanding we’ve been lucky enough to receive and would like to thank the community, groups, businesses and organisations for this” He added: “We know that a huge amount of effort goes into the preparation for the day, especially those who had prepared to decorate floats and houses and to those who had a special role for the day. We greatly appreciate those efforts and hope you they will be able join us with the same dedication next year”.
Brighter Bridge of Weir
Despite the conditions, the traditional visit to Steeple Square in the evening went ahead. Kilbarchan Pipe band led the procession and the new Miss Lilias, Victoria T h o m s o n carried out her first duty by Crowning School Queen, Millie Spence crowning the school queen, Millie Spence. Victoria also drew the £1000 prize raffle which was won by a young Kilbarchan couple.
Fortunately, Bridge of Weir Gala Day was dry and even, occasionally, sunny. Brighter Bridge of Weir has a load of people to thank for their help that day, which is always a big part of our fund-raising activities. Special thanks are due to Beaton Brothers and Donald Blair of Alexander Barr who, as usual, sponsored our Strawberries and Cream stall. And to the ‘weel-kent’ Sandy Clark, not a member of Brighter Bridge of Weir, but a regular at our Clean-Up days and our Tattie-Bogle family stall too.
Never A Dull Moment By the time this edition of the Advertizer is out, Midsummer’s Day will have been and gone, and as we put this piece together, the day before the Advertizer’s July deadline, it’s dull, damp and positively cool outside.
Miss Lilias and the School Queen and their attendants have also been lined up to take part in the Kilbarchan Show on Saturday 27th June where they will present the prizes on the day. A campaign has been set up by a Kilbarchan resident to raise funds to help cover the financial losses on the day. If you would like to donate go to Seona Hart’s crowdfunding page on Justgiving.com and search for “Lilias Day”: https://crowdfunding.justgiving.com/seona-hart-1 Report also on page 40
Speaking of the Tattie-Bogles, the name of Gryffe’s new wee sister is Violet. It’s probably not surprising that so many flowers names featured in the loads of suggestions we had. At the time of writing it’s too early to say how much was raised over the Day and in the lead-up, but we’ll publish details on our Facebook page and website as soon as we have them. Thanks to everyone who took part in our competitions. Meantime, work goes on and our volunteers will be seen regularly throughout the village, topping up the water, clearing the weeds and all the other things that they do just for the love of it. We hope readers will agree that Brighter Bridge of Weir really does make Bridge of Weir brighter, whatever the weather.

Ex-NASA astronaut touches down for free public events Renfrewshire residents are gearing up for a special week of space-themed events – with a NASA astronaut dropping in to help residents separate science from fiction. The free programme of film screenings and public talks is being laid on to mark the arrival of the week-long Mission Discovery space school for local pupils in Paisley Town Hall. The highlight will be Gravity: Reality vs Hollywood, which will see ex-astronaut Steve Bowen and former NASA assistant division chief Sarah Murray discuss the Oscar-winning film starring Sandra Bullock. The free-to-attend event – in Paisley Town Hall at 7.30pm on Tuesday 30 June – will see Steve and Sarah talk the crowd through scenes from the film and how they relate to their own experience of space. There will also be a programme of film screenings, with Monday 29 June seeing a one-off cinema marquee set up in Abbey Close for a showing of Matthew McConaughey’s 2014 blockbuster Interstellar. Wednesday 1 July will see a double bill at Paisley Arts Centre, with a solar viewing outside the building at 6pm, followed by a screening of Danny Boyle 2007 sci-fi thriller Sunshine inside the arts centre at 8pm. And on Friday 3 July there will be a full showing of the film Gravity in Paisley Town Hall, starting at 7.30pm. All the film and talk events are free to attend, but visitors should reserve a ticket in advance, either in person at Paisley Arts Centre or by calling 0300 300 1210. There is no need to reserve a ticket for the solar viewing, just turn up on the night. Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan said: “Mission Discovery is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for our young people to learn more about science from people who have been literally out of this world. “We wanted to celebrate the fact we are hosting an event of this scale and quality by laying on something space-themed the wider public could attend. “The opportunity to hear a Hollywood sci-fi blockbuster dissected by people who have actually been in space is one not to be missed, and I would encourage people to turn out and enjoy the week’s events. “We hope to be hosting many more unique and interesting events like this as we work towards Paisley’s bid for UK City of Culture 2021.” Mission Discovery will see almost 200 youngsters work with NASA astronauts and scientists to design their own experiments, with the winning entry to be launched aboard the International Space Station. The space school is returning to Renfrewshire for a second year, and is hosted by Renfrewshire Council as a way of encouraging interest in science and technology. It is run by International Space School Educational Trust (ISSET), gives young people the chance to learn NASA leadership, team building and personal development skills. All events are free but you will be required to book for most of them. Tickets are available in person at Paisley Arts Centre, or by calling 0300 300 1210. Mission Discovery Renfrewshire 2015 is sponsored by University of the West of Scotland, West College Scotland, Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, Clyde Marine Training, Fission Creative, Muir Slicer Associates Ltd, PM Information Solutions Ltd, Scottish Leather Group Ltd, The Experience – Kibble, Peak Scientific, Thermo Fisher and 29 Studios.
howwood ..................................................... & elderslie Hi there, June is always a busy time for schools as they approach the summer holidays. I was lucky enough to be at the St Anthony s end of year show. All the kids from the school took us on a musical journey around the world . The pupils were great and it was a teriffic show. So well done everybody at St Anthony's. Police Scotland have recently announced a service specifically aimed at rural areas. This involves officers paying special attention to areas like Howwood. I welcome this initiative and I'm sure it will be well received by the people of Howwood. A recent accident on the A737 caused traffic problems through the village. The issue was raised at the last meeting of the Howwood CC. As a result I have asked the Councils Civil Contingencies team to look at how these situations can be managed better particularly looking at how we can improve traffic movement through the village. At the recent meeting of the areas Local Area Committee, two Howwood Groups were granted funds one was to the Howwood Sports and Hobbies Group. The grant will allow them to continue their good work for young people in the Village hall on Thursday nights. The other was to the Howwood Community Council to help them site a defibrillator in the village. More and more areas and facilities are getting this potentially life saving apparatus fitted. Lets hope it is never needed but it is good to know it is available. As you might know a planning application has been submitted to the council for 49 houses to be built on Midton Road near Kilnknowe Cottages. As you can imagine this has sparked a lot of interest and objection locally. I will keep you up to date with developments. Just a reminder I do not have a surgery in the village in July.

Rabbit Flystrike What is flystrike? Flystrike is a devastating condition caused by the green bottle fly, which is attracted to lay its eggs in areas with damp fur soiled with urine or soft faeces. Each fly can lay up to 200 eggs which then hatch into maggots within hours and grow by feeding on flesh. The maggots can very quickly eat away large areas of tissue around the bottom, tail, belly and back.
What are the symptoms of flystrike?
Rescue Centres Dogs Trust Glasgow: 0141-773-5130 - www.dogstrust.org.uk Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue: 01505-502415 - www.hessilhead.org.uk Johnstone Cat Rescue: 01505 337321 Cat Protection: 0141-779-3341 -www.cats.org.uk/glasgowac/adopt-a-cat Scottish SPCA: 0141-882-1688 - www.scottishspca.org These centres are always on the lookout for donations and fundraising. If you can help, please get in touch with any of the centres above.
Initially your pet may just look quiet, so it’s important to check your rabbits’ fur daily for any signs of maggots or skin lesions. As the maggots grow they eat away more of the skin surface area. This can lead to the development of shock and eventually to collapse and death. If you find maggots crawling in your rabbit’s fur, it is an emergency and you should contact your vet immediately.
How is flystrike treated? It is important to seek veterinary treatment as soon as possible to give your rabbit the best chance of survival. Treatment comprises of removing the maggots, clipping and cleaning the fur, providing pain relief, topical soothing products and antibiotics. In more severe cases hospitalisation for fluid therapy, treatment of complications and syringe feeding may be required. In some cases where extensive tissue loss has occurred a rabbit may need to be euthenased to relieve suffering.
What can I do to prevent flystrike? Rabbits who cannot groom themselves effectively due to long fur, obesity, arthritis or painful teeth are at greater risk of flystrike, therefore ensuring your rabbit remains fit and healthy reduces the risk. We recommend to check your rabbits’ bottom at least twice a day during the high risk summer period to detect any infestation early. You can also apply treatments to rabbits during the risk period that prevent eggs from hatching into maggots, protecting your rabbit from flystrike.

Windows on Wildlife Update The Windows on Wildlife Project aims to bring people closer to wildlife, gaining a unique insight to the furry & feathered inhabitants of Castle Semple Country Park. Project Officer Hayley Douglas gives us an update.
Wildlife News Finally, as I write, we have some nice weather in the Park. The cold and wet has certainly affected some of the wildlife, with delays in nesting attempts seen amongst the Barn Owls and small birds that frequent the Park’s nest boxes. I opened up one Barn Owl box the other day expecting to find some fat fluffy chicks to ring. Instead I was greeted by 5 pearly white eggs and 1 day old chick with Mum in attendance. Hopefully all the eggs will hatch and I will check again in 3 - 4 weeks time. Our big Mute swan and his female have successfully hatched out 3 cygnets and it won’t be long until he chases all the other swans away so his young get priority over the daily handouts from the public!
The Plant Sale took place on 23rd May a sunny, warm day; just the kind of weather to encourage everyone into this year’s gardening projects. The tables were soon filled with members’ home grown perennials, such as Lavender, Buddleia, Fuchsias, Cannas, Dahlias, grasses and Geraniums, along with vegetables, such as tomatoes and herbs, and a selection of houseplants, succulents and cacti. A wide range of bedding plants was available, promising a colourful display in the months ahead. The variety of plants already in colour, such as the plumes of French Lavender, soon caught the eye of interested folk, young and old. The young are always encouraged by members so usually take away something, along with a word or two of advice on growing, to grow on, for example, a tomato plant or a succulent. Members are also on hand to help those laden with shopping and carry their plant purchases over to cars.
It hasn’t however, affected the badger cubs, Salt and Pepper, who have came on leaps and bounds in the last month. The wet weather has meant that there has been plenty of food around for them and their family. It is actually long periods of hot, dry weather that can cause problems to the badgers as their main food source, the earthworm, is harder to locate in dry soil due to the worms moving down deeper to stay moist. The schools have all finished now and wow did we have some good photographers in the 12 classes I taught! Hopefully they will put the skills they have learned into practice in the future.
More Info… Details can be found on the Park’s website www.clydemuirshiel.co.uk or by emailing wow@clydemuirshiel.co.uk. Footage can be viewed on the Park’s Youtube channel or on the WoW Facebook page. Talks to groups can be arranged.
Everything home-grown has a good chance of growing in another local garden. This means established plants, divided when preparing borders for a new season, are brought along and, of course, gardeners everywhere are keen to share their successful plants with others. The Society’s evening meetings are now over for the summer. However, there is the Flower Show to look forward to at the end of August. Start planning now for next month’s Show on Saturday 29th August! This is where the fruit from those tomato plants can be displayed! If you do not have a Show Schedule, call the Show Secretary on 612898 or the Chairperson on 614895 for more information. Meanwhile, members have an outing to Ardarden and a report on this will appear in next month’s issue.

Gryffeside Charity Fun Show Well we certainly picked a good name in calling our fundraising event the Gryffeside Charity Fun Show as there was bucket loads of fun. We had a record number of horses who enjoyed both the fun ride and jumping. The homebaking and BBQ are always winners. Then for the first time we ventured in to the world of dog showing and agility and I think it is safe to say it was a huge success. For me the smiles in the photos some up the day perfectly. Most importantly we raised in the region of £3,000 and every single penny of that goes to Cancer Research UK. This is taking us ever closer to our goal of raising £25,000 since we started fundraising just two years ago. We would need a whole page of this magazine to thank everyone who made our show possible! Thank you to all the Gryffeside Gems (our livery clients) and their families who without a shadow of a doubt not only make the show in terms of running it but also in the warm welcome they offer to everyone who comes. Thank you to our main sponsors Abbey Veterinary Group, MBM Veterinary Group, Inspire Catering, 3663 Catering and to all the local businesses who so generously donated raffle prizes. So grab yourself a coffee and sit down and look through all the fabulous photos from the day taken by Kris Clay Photography at www.photoboxgallery. com/topgearphotos/ I guarantee you won’t stop smiling from start to finish.
Bridge of Weir Allotments and Gardens Society Members of the Bridge of Weir Allotments and Gardens Society have been working on the vegetable garden behind the Bridge Post Office and Community Centre. By July there should be a good display of food crops which anyone can grow locally. Last summer we added extra raised beds, and two of these will be used this summer by a group of young people led by the LEAP project. Our garden is aimed at encouraging people to grow their own food and we are delighted that children will be participating this year. The garden has a variety of well established herbs and several fruit bushes. We have stabilised the sloping ground behind the garden and laid wild flower turf. During June we are planting a selection of salad and vegetable crops, so there will be plenty to see in July.
Please visit www.justgiving.com/buckoffcancer and keep an eye on how we are getting on with our fundraising and if you would like to make a donation that’s even better!

You can visit the garden when the Bridge is open - just ask the volunteer on duty. If it is a wet day take a look through the window. We welcome anyone interested in food growing to join us. Contact Janet Birch, secretary of our group by leaving your details at the Bridge.

There’s more to Birds than just Feathers! Here’s an idea for an amazing day out during the summer holidays - something very unusual and certainly not off the shelf…. although perhaps off the perch! Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre is located within the boundaries of the first National Park in Scotland, Loch Lomond & the Trossachs National Park, just 30 minute drive from Glasgow. If you are looking for a Bird of Prey encounter, why not come along and spend a few hours in the company of these remarkable creatures. The Centre is located in the woodland on the left of the walkway leading to the Gateway Centre at Loch Lomond Shores, when entering the Lomond Shores area, follow the signs for the red car park and you’ll find the centre located on the left, adjacent to the cycle crossing. There are over thirty birds of prey, representing more than twenty species. Birds of all sizes, the Little Owl, Kestrels, Buzzards, Hawks, Falcons and Eagles, including “Orla”, our Golden Eagle. So why not come in and meet our feathered companions. Visitors always leave enlightened, having learned a great deal more about birds of prey. Most are surprised at the number of species there are. All visitors comment on how close they can get to the birds, and appreciate their size and power. Above all, visitors recognise the passion of those who care for the birds.
Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre is open every day, except Christmas Day & New Years Day. During the summer months, opening hours are MONDAY TO SUNDAY : 9.30 - 18.00 (Last entry 17.30). Entrance Fees: •

It’s just 3 sessions in a small group, learning about social anxiety, emotions, reactions and setting goals.” The course is open to all who experience ‘severe shyness’, anxiety or nerves in social situations and begins on Tuesday 7th July from 2-5pm at Stow Brae on Causeyside Street, Paisley. Lochwinnoch Gala Day We were so lucky with the weather and what a great day we had!! If anyone has not seen them, the official photographs taken by Lesley Adam are all on our Facebook page.
The Gala Day Queen, Lucy Hailstones, her Attendants and Ladies in Waiting all looked lovely in the open topped cars supplied and driven by Davy Hutton and Gordon Rigby, and our thanks to them. The theme this year was Frozen and the photographs show that the children had great costumes!! The 1st prizes for best costume were won by Ian Dingwall and Erin McAllen and 2nd prizes went to Archie Guditis and Molly Jean Bell. Well done to the mums!! Frozen characters Anna and Elsa lead the parade, hand in hand with the Parade King and Queen, Finlay Colligridge-Watt and Molly O’Halloran. They put on a great performance and their costumes were two of the best on the day. Well done you two!! The Gala Day was opened by the Depute Provost John Caldwell and the Gala Queen was crowned by Anna and Elsa. Special attractions during the afternoon were the Wrestling and the Gunge machine, which proceeded to ‘gunge’ several members of Primary School staff, the Gala Queen and tag team members of the wrestling team, in green slime!! Great fun was had by all. The inflatable 6 a-side table soccer was also a big hit!!
In addition to the credits on the program, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the workers backstage, (several of whom put in an 11 hour day), who helped erect marquees, collected litter, sold programs and marshalled. Without you, Gala Day would not exist. Thank you. Particular thanks to: • Willie Gamble for organising the Music. • The Parish Church for the use of tables and chairs. • Kate Lilley for bringing the parade through the village. • Sammy Simpson for running the 6 a-side inflatable. • W.H. Malcolm for kindly supplying the cherry-picker for the bunting. See you next year!!!! Photos by Lesley Adam: 01505842408 or 07595398502. Email: lesleyadam@me.com

GP14 Scottish Area Championship 23/24 May’15
Castle Semple Sailing Club near Glasgow was pleased to welcome boats from Chelmarsh, Derwent Reservoir, Bassenthwaite and a strong contingent from South Staffs to the Scottish Area Championship. Great weather conditions prevailed, with steady winds and sunshine on Saturday, changing to strong winds and some shifts on Sunday. This resulted in a broach by the eventual winners, and various capsizes and breakages, including a broken boom for Peter Collings and Lindsay McCosh, probably denying them the chance of any silverware, and proving that you can have too much kicker. The extensive Bronze fleet enjoyed the challenging conditions and had close racing. In the Gold fleet some people thought that it was all over after the first three races, with Dave Young and Annette Fitzpatrick winning two and getting a second. Mark Fleming and Seonaid Young were not going down without a fight, and the duel continued between Dave and Mark for the final three races on Sunday. Mark won races four and five, but it wasn’t looking good for him after the broach and being slightly behind Dave during the last race. However, in the final lap of the last race Mark and Seonaid got past Dave to secure their first Scottish Area win. In the middle of the fleet Alan Jones and Sue Watson, and Peter and Lindsay were well placed by Saturday evening, along with several others still in with a chance of securing at least third place. Close competition resulted in the final beat to the finish line being very hard work on the legs, and two photo finishes. Every place counted. By the end of six races, it was only on count back that Third place went to the local boat of Arthur Logan and Iain Hardy. Ross McGlennon won the Youth Helm prize, crewed by Mark Simmonds, and Ann Penny won Lady’s Helm, crewed by Lisa Carpenter.
The Castle Semple hospitality was once again superb, the warm welcome being boosted by a piper, goodie bags and free beer. An excellent dinner for over thirty people was followed by some not so light refreshments, meaning that the five minute gun on Sunday morning was a struggle for some. The variety of courses set by the experienced race officer Craig Evans were appreciated. Sincere thanks are also given to the Grand Prix sponsors Craftinsure, and local sponsors O’Neill Services, Gael Force, Tunnocks, and Heritage Meats. The crews appreciated that the free raffle prizes went to the crews and not to the helms. A weekend of good competition amongst good friends.

Valauable Away Point For Renfrewshire Junior Golfers Renfrewshire Golf Union’s junior team travelled to a cold and windy Cathcart Castle Golf Club to open the season’s battle to win the West League title. The younger members of the squad soon had team manager Graham McGee smiling as Euan English, a promising youngster from the Erskine Club, beat his home course rival 5 and 4. Not to be outdone, Tom Mackenzie from East Renfrewshire recorded a 7 and 6 win over Ralston’s Greg Murphy and Ranfurly Castle’s Angus Frood topped that in his game against local boy Innes Arnot winning 8 and 6 with a great performance.

This is in aid of the army Benevolent Fund. As of Saturday 12 June, they had travelled 120km.
Photo: Team left to right - Euan English, Ibrahim Hussain, Angus Frood, Ross Robertson, Jack Currie, Darragh Cuddihy, Tom MacKenzie and Lewis Breslin The smile began to fade as the more experienced members of the squad faltered in their task of providing a couple of wins out of the remaining games for a valuable away victory and with only one game left on the course and no more points on the board, it was left to Gourock’s Darragh Cuddihy to get a win for a drawn match. He was up to the task beating Luke McCartney (Cawder) 2 and 1. Full result: Tom MacKenzie (East Renfrewshire) beat Greg Murphy (Ralston) 7and 6. Ibrahim Hussain (Eastwood) lost to Cameron Dunn (Sandyhills) 1 hole. Angus Frood (Ranfurly Castle) beat Innes Arnot (Cathcart Castle) 8 and 6. Sign Up now for Paisley Road Race Renfrewshire Council are urging runners to sign up now for this year’s Paisley 10k Road Race and Fun Run which takes place in the town centre on Sunday 30 August. Renfrewshire Council Leader Mark Macmillan said: “Last year, there were over 1,900 competitors in the road race with another 900 in the fun run, so this race just keeps getting bigger and better. “The Road Race is popular with serious runners and first-time participants because it’s a flat, fast loop of the west of the town and the town centre. It’s also one of the more scenic routes for this type of race, taking in many of Paisley town centre’s architectural gems. The Fun Run is a 3km dash around the town centre, and even if you don’t fancy running, it’s perfect for a stroll round with family.” The popular event, sponsored for the fifth year by Hillington Park, will take place on Sunday 30 August. Runners can sign up online at the Paisley 10k and Fun Run website or pick up a race application form at their local sports centre or library. Every competitor receives a medal and trophies are awarded to the winner of each age category in the 10k. https://www.sportsystems.co.uk/ss/event/Paisley10KRoadRacewithFunRun

I was sitting at traffic lights driving to work the other day and a boy walked past me on his way to school; he looked 10/11, and was eating crisps and drinking a can of coke. It was 8am. As a parent, it is our job to educate our children to make the right choices in life. My son is 2, and at the moment he can’t make his own choices about what he eats. There is a lot he doesn’t know about; he doesn’t know about any other drink other than milk and water, nor about high fat/sugary cereal bars or even McDonalds. This is the choices I have made for him, for me it is all about educating him and driving him towards a healthy lifestyle. One fast food meal isn’t going to cause any lasting damage, but in today’s modern society of excess, where do we draw the line? Is junk food twice a week ok? Once a week? Once a month? As adults we influence our children’s lives and diet every day. It is estimated today that 1 in 5 children are overweight, where does this end? I look about today and it is becoming normality that as a nation we are eating worse and gaining weight. The impact on health is massive. I’m not going to dictate what is right or wrong, everyone has the freedom and choice to make their own decisions. However a child’s interpretation of the world is very different to adults. They are learning the foundations to absolutely everything, which will have a result on who they become as adults, physically and psychologically. Whilst a child may appear to be active and healthy, if they are not consuming sufficient nutrients to meet their growing needs, it will affect them. Childhood is the time when eating the right foods nutritionally couldn’t be more important. Kilbarchan Boy’s Brigade Kilbarchan Boy’s Brigade Bid Farewell to Captain Speirs At the end of session display the whole Company joined together to thank Captain Speirs, better known as Willie, for his efforts over the past twelve years as he presided over the display for the last time. Willie had announced that he was stepping down but we couldn’t let him slip away quietly. Everyone enjoyed the display as the boys from each of the sections demonstrated some of the activities they had been taking part in and skills they have developed over the session. The boys were determined to put on a show for those that had come to watch and were especially proud receiving their rewards at the end of the night. The big surprise of the night came later on during the gymnastics when, unknown to

Kilmacolm Tennis Club Celebrates 125 Years with Judy Murray Back in 1890, only 15 years after lawn tennis was first played on the hollowed turf of The All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club in South London, some Kilmacolm residents formed a tennis club on Castlehill Road. So this year Kilmacolm Tennis Club is proud to be celebrating its 125th Year Anniversary. We are holding a big open day and tennis marathon and fun day on Saturday 25th July. Britain’s Federation Cup Captain and Strictly Star Judy Murray is coming along, and we will have 125 hours of continuous tennis played on our three courts during the day.

most in the hall, we had special guests lined up in the form of exboys that Willie had seen pass through the Company return for a one off display of gymnastic “ability”. Seeing grown men with much larger frames than their youthful selves vaulting over the box was a sight to be seen. It is a great testament to the influence Willie and the BB had on the guys that some had travelled from as far afield as Aberdeen especially to attend.
The display also marked the end of the service for Elaine Jonstone and Stuart Geddes and everyone connected to Kilbarchan Boy’s Brigade is very grateful for the contributions they both made over the years.
Kilbarchan Boy’s Brigade plans for new session Kilbarchan Boy’s Brigade will return for the new session after the school holidays. Preparations are hard underway for the coming session with special activities planned such as overnight camps, sausage sizzles, cycle trips, panto and curling all in the pipeline. There are also the cross Paisley Old boys vaulting team battalion competitions that the boys can take part in such as swimming, basketball and badminton to name a few.
Kilmacolm Tennis Club have adopted Tennis for Free, a charity for which Judy Murray is one of the patrons, as the beneficiary for our anniversary year. So we will be hosting a fun packed day at the courts on Castlehill Road to raise money for this very worthwhile charity, to help to make tennis accessible to all. So please put 25 July in your diary to come along to Kilmacolm Tennis Club to have a fun day of tennis and to get the chance to meet Andy Murray’s first coach and to help support the future potential tennis talent. It is a fiver to play, or to spectate, with free refreshments. Everyone welcome whether you can hit a ball, dance a foxtrot, or neither! Kilmacolm Tennis Club Memberships are available at a special rate of £125 per adult, £300 for a family, £40 for a student and £25 to £40 for children depending on age. This is the only Championship which Renfrewshire has never won and the managers have selected a strong team comprising Jack Currie (Greenock), Lewis Breslin (Fereneze), Matthew Dalrymple (Old Course Ranfurly) and Jamie Stewart (Old Course Ranfurly). The first three are sixteen years old and Jamie is fifteen. Jamie has recently represented Scotland in an under sixteen international match against Wales, Ireland and Netherlands where he won all his matches and his confidence will be high. He will play with club mate Matthew in the morning foursomes. In the second pairing Jack Currie is a past Renfrewshire Champion and Lewis Breslin was his club’s junior champion at age fourteen so they should be hard to beat.
Football Training Tuesday & Thursday nights at Johnstone High School astro between 6pm and 9pm - football training for players of all age groups & abilities. For further details please contact Ali McMaster on 07775 578795, email Glentyanthistlefc@gmail. com or visit our website on www.glentyanthistle.co.uk
Line Dancing Why not join a line dancing club and learn a skill that keeps you mentally and physically fit without getting bored? EVERYONE can line dance! There are two line dance clubs in Bishop-ton - one with some experienced dancers and the other catering more for beginners and improvers. Why not give it a go? If you’re interested, please call 01505 341611 for further details.
The competition will be decided by the foursome’s scores being added to the best three of the four individual rounds played in the afternoon.
Home Win For Young Renfrewshire Golfers With a number of regular players involved in other tournaments, Renfrewshire Golf Union had to select four boys who had never represented the county previously for the home game at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club. The first of those, Jack Crawford from Mearns Castle was three down with three to play and showed great courage and skill to fight back for a halved game. Elderslie’s Jorg Irving then put points on the board with a solid two hole win and Fraser Lawrie (Lochwinnoch) showed no first time nerves as he overcame Strathendrick’s David Hood five and four. With one of the team not showing up due to travel problems giving a walk over to Stirlingshire, the performance of the new recruits eased the worries of the management team and these were further dispelled as the more regular team members did what was required. A special mention for Tom Mackenzie of East Renfrewshire who is unbeaten this season and for Darragh Cuddihy who beat Stirlingshire’s top player comfortably. With an away draw and a win already achieved, Renfrewshire is starting to have aspirations of the West of Scotland title and will entertain Ayrshire at Greenock on 5th July.
Full results Jack Crawford (Mearns Castle) tied with Tyler Morgan (Falkirk) Tom MacKenzie (East Renfrewshire) beat Gregor Johnston (Bridge of Allan) 4 and 3; Jorg Irving (Elderslie) beat Max Miller (Falkirk Tryst) 2 up; Fraser Lawrie (Lochwinnoch) beat David Hood (Strathendrick) 5 and 4; Alistair McNaughton (Caldwell) beat Fraser Laird (Glenbervie) 3 and 1; Cameron Jones (Greenock) lost to Stuart Murray (Falkirk) 4 and 2; Darragh Cuddihy (Gourock) beat Calun Bauchop (Glenbervie) 3 and 2. Renfrewshire 51/2 Stirlingshire 21/2 (including walk over)

St Columba School Archie Wins the Silver Tablet The annual Silver Tablet Concert, established in 1917 to celebrate outstanding musical talent from the Senior School, was held at St Columba church, with Senior I pupils Isla, Emily and Will performing a wonderful prelude to a large audience of parents, former pupils, former staff and friends of the school, which was followed by the main event. Congratulations to Archie on winning the award with an excellent performance on flute and to Jillian who delivered a beautiful vocal programme. Well done everyone. Thanks go to our adjudicator Ms Palma Allan MBE, who had to make a difficult decision, and to Cllr David Wilson for kindly presenting the award.

important part of his life both at school and afterwards at Bishopton RFC, his friends, many of whom are former pupils of the School, organised the match between St Columba’s ‘Old Boys’ and Bishopton to raise funds for the charity CRY UK (Cardiac Risk in the Young), which provides screening for young people in order to identify heart conditions. The School Pipe Band led proceedings and the big match kicked off at 3pm, resulting in a 50 – 17 win for St Columba’s. The event had a great turnout and raised more than £1500 for CRY UK.
Gardening Club To coincide with the RHS Chelsea Flower Show the Gardening Club held a competition for our very own budding garden designers of the future. The children planned and created a miniature garden using a variety of materials they had collected at home and in the School grounds. Two very prestigious guests, Mrs Lamont and Mrs Fergus from Colourful Kilmacolm, came along to judge the gardens and awarded Isla and Grace (J6) Best in Show for their joint effort. Emilia (J5) won the Silver–Gilt award as a runner up.

Lochwinnoch Primary Thursday 11th June, saw Lochwinnoch Primary’s charity walk to raise funds for Yorkhill Childrens’ Charity and what a wonderful time we all had! It was a glorious day, the sun shone down on us from start to finish, and spirits were high as we completed our exciting challenge! All pupils in our school from P1 to P7 walked an impressive distance, raised money for an important cause, and also, showed great compassion for others and great team spirit as they helped each other to complete the course. Completing this hike was no mean feat for all involved, and we would like to thank all who sponsored us and helped us raise funds for such an important charity. I’d like to say a huge thank you to every child who participated, I am so very proud of each and every one of you. I would also like to thank the police and all of the helpers who gave of their own time to make the event possible. Finally, I would like to thank my staff too for helping to organise such a wonderful.
Gryffe High School Learning for Change Event – A nice finish to P7 Induction Week The sun shone for our ‘Learning for Change’ Eco Day. This was a fitting end to the P7 Induction week and gave them not only a chance to meet the new S2 pupils but also the opportunity to take part in around 20 informative and interactive workshops around Eco Issues. Thanks to the visitors and our own staff who made this possible. The P7 pupils who will be starting as S1 pupils at Gryffe High in August had a week of Induction. This included 2 days following their August timetable and allowing them to familiarise themselves with the school and what to expect. They seemed to enjoy the experience and we look forward to welcoming them for their new start in August.
Activities 2015 It has been a long tradition in Gryffe High that all S1, S2 and S3 pupils take part in an activity while the senior pupils are away on exam leave. Pupils have an extensive range of activities to choose from. These can be residential to eg. Barcelona, Noordwijk, Valencia or can be day trips including Scary Scotland, Edinburgh Zoo, Fishing Frenzy, Golf or Jewellery. With around 20 different activities to choose from the there is really something for everyone! It may have been warmer in Valencia than it was at the Kelpies and some emergency waterproofs had to be bought at M&Ds, but in general the weather was kind to us and the pupils all had a great variety of enjoyable and educational experiences.

Langbank Playgroup At Langbank Playgroup, we love the house corner and here we are enjoying some food and putting the world to right. It’s a wonderful role-play opportunity and a time to develop language and social skills with little adult intervention. Plus we get to practice those important tidying-up skills at the end of the day too! No matter whether you are one of the younger ones at 2.5yrs or just about to head off to school, there is a space for everybody in our warm and inclusive group. This year we have enjoyed a fantastic partnership with Langbank Primary which really does help all of the family when moving onto school. Please contact Jacqueline to enquire about a space from August on 01475 540728 and children from Langbank and the surrounding areas all welcome on a Friday morning in the Village Centre. Playgroup had a wonderful trip to the RSPB Centre at Lochwinnoch for an exciting outdoor trip at the end of May and it didn’t rain! We observed various birds feeding through the Centre windows then had an interesting walk outside along the paths to various hides, exploring the bug hotel and under logs for little creatures as we went. Then there was time for a treasure hunt and play on the Our babies have been having lots of swings before heading back indoors for fun learning about different animals a welcome snack. Our children in the Tweenies and Rising 5’s great fun at their Summer Outing to Wellsfield Farm Park even the weather didn’t stop their fun. The children, staff and parents had so much fun playing on the bouncy pillows, doughnut chute and racing cars. At times the parents and staff were more competitive than the children. During the Butterfly Group’s Graduation, the children were able to showcase their amazing singing and individual personalities to their parents as they said goodbye to nursery and everyone wished them good luck in starting school. The summer programmes for all the children have been devised and everyone is looking forward to six weeks full of summer, fun activities. The Tweenies will especially enjoy their Pool Party to celebrate their older children moving to Rising 5’s and introducing new children from the Baby Room. Our Out of School Care children have also been enjoying the good weather playing football, rounders and making dens to play in. They have enjoyed painting, making Viking ships and having fun with playdough and gloop. The older children have been putting their baking skills to good use by making delicious truffles. During the summer our Holiday Club will be visiting Funworld, Tollcross Children’s Farm, enjoying playing sports, balloon modelling workshop and lots, lots more. Limited spaces are still available, book now to avoid disappointment. Everyone is looking forward to Fun, Fun, Fun!

Duchal Nursery We were very lucky with our Sports Day at the end of May held on one of the few dry days we had. All the children thoroughly enjoyed themselves taking part in all sorts of races. Our annual summer trip this year was to the Dinosaur Exhibition at Kelvingrove Museum. It was a great adventure with the trip on the big bus and a morning out of the nursery. The children gain so much from these experiences. As the weather has improved we have been spending far more time in our “Outdoor Classroom” really making the most of our wonderful re-furbished garden. It is scary to think that by the time you are reading this, our year will be over and we will have said “au revoir” to our older children going off to school – we wish you all lots of luck, please come back and visit us!! Our end of term concert celebrates all that we have achieved throughout the year, learning through fun and play, and the children are having a great time rehearsing before the big performance! If you would like to see our great set up at Birkmyre Park and find out more about what we do at Duchal please come and visit us one morning - contact Head Teacher Jean McCarthy on 874358 to arrange a convenient time or keep up to date with all the latest news on our website duchal.com and FaceBook. Greenock and District Scouts Founders Day Parade The sun more or less shone on this year’s parade. As usual the turnout was impressive and the Leapmoor Pipe Band led the marching.
Cumbrae Fun’raiser for Quarriers Members of all sections of 45th Greenock and District Scouts got on their bikes (having first got on a boat) to join in a round-Cumbrae ride to raise funds for the Finding your Feet charity. Finding Your Feet was set up by Corinne Hutton, to help those faced with a life-changing trauma or injury to find their feet in life again. The weather held out and the Quarriers team raised more than £640 for the charity. Everyone managed the 10.25 mile ride without trouble and a great time was had by all.

10th Beavers’ Adventure 10 excited Beavers along with leaders and a parent helper went on an adventure to Tesco Port Glasgow. They boarded the train at Gourock, enjoyed a short ride through the tunnels to Port Glasgow before taking a short walk through the town to Tesco. Once in Tesco we were met by Dawn and Heather who took the Beavers through the Farm To Food workshop. They learned about where fruit and vegetables come from and how they grow. How to make bread and where in the shop you find the ingredients. They even got to smell some yeast which all the beavers thought smelled awful. Lastly, they learned all about fish before heading through the back to see the fridges and freezers. They enjoyed walking through the big fridge before tasting different cheeses, bread and having some juice. A great time was had by all before heading home on the train. A big thanks to Dawn and Heather from Tesco for providing an exciting workshop. We now look forward to presenting the Beavers with their Farm To Fork badges at the end of term.
Wild weather for Kilmacolm Scouts 16 brave Kilmacolm Scouts tackled the weather head-on at Auchengillan Activity Centre this weekend. They were lashed by wind and rain, but at least it wasn’t snowing like the last time!
Kilmacolm Beavers Go On A Hike
Scouts did very well in poor condition and, as always, the camp ended in bright sunshine. It was a fun camp with Sumo wrestling, equaliser tug o’ war and grass sledging along with a little orienteering thrown into the mix. We were pleased not to be cooking on open fires this time too. Thank you to all our helpers, especially pulling the trailer.
Kilmacolm Beavers had a great time at summer camp last weekend at Finlaystone Country Estate. They enjoyed den building, mini beast hunt and hiking adventures. A lot of new Beavers celebrated their first camp too. A big thanks to the rangers and parent helpers.
70th Beavers Learn Emergency Aid 70th Beavers did their Emergency Aid stage 1 with the help of Helen and Joe Heffernan. With the holidays coming up this could be useful skills to remember.

Everest Challenge Reaches New Heights The Everest Challenge Scouts and Explorers upped their game a bit in May, climbing two Munros back-to-back, and their first 1000m hill as well. They climbed Beinn an Dothaidh at Bridge of Orchy and Stob a Choire Odhair in the Black Mounts. Better than
that, fifteen of the group were awarded their Eiger neckies, and one Scout Franek - passed the 19,331ft milestone to earn the first Kilmanjaro neckie of the year. The group earned praise for putting up with a fairly miserable Sunday, but when the clouds cleared they did get some great views down Glen Orchy and North over Rannoch Moor and the Black Mounts. They are now looking forward to another weekend hillwalking in June. Greenock & District Scout Council is a registered Scottish Charity No. SC004127

Hundreds of young people take part in Renfrewshire sports spectacular Renfrewshire’s Primary and Secondary Games and the Primary and Secondary Special Games have been taking place at the On-X centre in Linwood. The popular annual event has again been organised by Renfrewshire Council’s Sports Services team with support from local sporting and community organisations. Over 200 pupils had the chance to try out a wide range of sports on an individual or team basis. Councillor Jim Harte, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Sport, Leisure and Culture Policy Board, said: “The Renfrewshire Games have become a well-established event on the local sporting calendar. Every year, hundreds of pupils take part to showcase their talents and try out different sports. “There’s always a great atmosphere and that has certainly been the case again this year. “I would like to thank everyone involved with the event for what has again proved to be an outstanding festival of sport.” Among the activities available were athletics, golf, football, boccia, bowls, dance, tennis and martial arts.

Sessions for those in P1 to P5 taking place Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from 11am until 2pm and sessions for those in P6 to S4 taking place Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2pm until 5pm. Saturday sessions also running throughout the year. For full details visit www.nomadmusicschool.co.uk.
The biannual show this year “Grease” - a ‘simpler’ time of young love and fast cars proved to be their biggest production yet. Over 100 pupils volunteered their time to participate, both on stage and off, nearly tripling the usual cast. Johnstone High bought the rights to “Grease” in August last year, held auditions in January and started rehearsals in February. So it’s fair to say that, with at least 1 rehearsal every week since, the cast and crew had been working extremely hard. Cast members Rachel Aird and Hana Watson stated they felt that the show was not only enjoyable but has provided them with a highly valuable learning experience.
Johnstone pupils scrapheap challenge Pupils in Johnstone have been giving scrap bikes a new lease of life as part of a green recycling scheme. The earn-a-bike project at Johnstone High School has been teaching young people how to fix and repair bikes that would have been recycled for scrap metal. Bikes were collected by the recycling operators at the Underwood Road Household Waste Recycling centre and 17 broken mountain, BMX and road bicycles were donated to the scheme, run by Youth Services. Pupils managed to fully rebuild 8 bikes, which they will get to take home as part of the project. Other pupils were shown how to perform minor repairs on their own bikes using spare parts from the donated bikes. Eight of the pupils will earn a Youth Achievement Award from Youth Scotland. Councillor Jacqueline Henry, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Education and Children Policy Board, said: “Most children grow up with a bike and learning how to repair them is not only an essential life-skill to have, but it is also a great deal of fun too. “Many bikes end up on the scrapheap because of minor faults that could easily be repaired. Pupils learned how to fix up their bikes as well as working on rebuilding broken bikes that can be used again. The end result is 8 rebuilt bikes and pupils who are geared up to take them home as their own.” Councillor Eddie Devine, Convener of Renfrewshire Council’s Environment Policy Board, said: “Recycling takes on many forms, it is not just about how we treat our waste but how we can prevent waste. The earn-a-bike scheme is an ideally way to upcycle in the local community and goes to show that there are some really useful stuff being thrown away. Turning this around and making use of these scrap bikes is not only helping the environment, but helping parents pockets too.” The earn-a-bike scheme is being run at schools across Renfrewshire. For more information, e-mail Youth Services or call 0141 889 1110.

Bridge of Weir Primary School The end-of-term hullabaloo always belies the bittersweetness of imminent goodbyes as we send the P7s we have nudged, nurtured and so enjoyed knowing onto the next stage of their life’s journey. Hearty good luck wishes to each and every one of you. This year we will also be waving goodbye to two much-loved pillars of our staff. Pillars who, if they don’t actually hold the school up, certainly contribute massively to holding things together. Mrs Breakey and Mrs Forbes have served the school, its staff, its pupils and their families for 20 and 22 years respectively. Their quiet wisdom and knowledge cannot be understated, and we will miss them very much. They may not miss their daily trips down the school corridors laden with forgotten lunches/homework/football boots and musical instruments…but, as they said themselves, simply, “We will miss the children.” Special congratulations to our school football team (and coach Mr Barratt), which has finished at the top of the league for the second year in a row. High-fives to Zygy, Calum, Fraser, Alfie and Callum, who have been selected for the Paisley and District team. Anyway, back to the hullabaloo. Sports days, Mayfair, church services, clubs, songs, drama, and games. We’ve had a few, but in our case far too many to mention! That said, none of these would be as happy or as comprehensively possible without the goodwill and generosity of all our volunteers and friends of the school. We extend our warm and very heartfelt thanks to everyone who has helped and supported us over this past year. We finished this term as we all hope to go on: in summer clothes and with an ice-cream in hand (from a proper ice-cream van - how seriously cool is that?!). Happy summer everyone and look forward to a safe return for all on Thursday 13 August at 9am.
