EXPERT JET-WASHING With Spring now here this is the time of year we are busiest cleaning driveways, patios etc’ ready for Summer. If you are thinking of having your driveway cleaned then it is crucial it’s done correctly to prevent problems in future. If there are a lot of weeds these should be treated before jet-washing and after a high-pressure industrial clean that removes dirt, moss and a little sand it is critical to re-sand with kilndried sand, a Biocidal treatment will then resist future growths. Give us a call for free friendly information on this service or for a free quotation. 01505 863 863 www. Before After nutechcleaning.co.uk

This
Month
Major changes in Kilmacolm
A significant amount of activity is now in progress at the old Institute building at the Cross. Although scaffolding has been erected, which might look like the building is being preserved, the plan is still to demolish it. A new build will be erected with two retail units on the ground floor and thirteen residential flats, over three levels above; the basement will accommodate residential parking and also allow for deliveries and storage for the two shops. The larger of the two shops will house a much improved Co-Operative store, relocated from Lyle Buildings. There will clearly be some time of disruption whilst works are in progress, but hopefully the completed build and improvement to the village environs will be well worth it.
On the roads The A761, Kilmacolm to Bridge of Weir road, is yet again receiving surface repairs. The traffic lights which were in situ towards the latter part of May have allowed for drainage improvement works in preparation for resurfacing. Hopefully this will see an end to the flooding at the Scart Farm entrance and the many serious accidents which appear to have been caused by aquaplaning. Staying on roads, the new “Gotter Bridge” is now open in Quarriers village, ahead of schedule. The temporary bailey bridge has been in place over Gotter Water, on Craigbet Road, for 10 years. This had restricted access to the buses and larger vehicles, but normal service should now be resumed.
Fantastic turnout

Despite poor weather forecasts earlier in the week, the Knapps Show turned out to be one of the best for many years. The glorious sunshine was equally matched by the beaming smiles of the crowds who were there to enjoy the day. Let’s hope the other local events scheduled for June are just as lucky with the weather.
Advertizer Anniversary I’m always commending others for their years of service to the community, but forgot to give myself a mention earlier this year. It was 20 years ago in February 1995 that I first started publishing The Advertizer, then just a black and white four page newssheet, delivered around Kilmacolm. Like many startups, I worked from a spare room in the house and did everything relating to the business myself, including the first few month’s deliveries to 2,000 homes, prior to taking on some delivery help. The enthusiasm and energy of youth, or was I just plain bonkers back then? I have to say I’m very proud of how the publication has evolved, and extend a huge thank you to my co-workers in the office, our dozens of loyal advertisers who make the community magazine financially viable and the many contributors who help us with the editorial and photographic content. The Advertizer is the ideal platform to communicate with your community as we reach over 13,500 homes and businesses in the Gryffe area. Send your news and photos to info@advertizer.co.uk or by post to The Gryffe Advertizer, 1st floor, Neva Place, Bridge of Weir, PA11 3PN.

Greenock Branch and West of Scotland Branch Argylls

Building Bridges between Charity and Construction Renfrewshire charity, Finding Your Feet, has received a donation of £500 from Pacific Building, a leading construction firm based in Hillington.
These will eventually be exhibited and auctioned off to raise funds for the charity.
Finding Your Feet is the latest charity to benefit from Pacific Building’s philanthropic programme, set up to mark the company’s tenth anniversary and which has seen the construction firm donate £500 to ten charities in the area.
Pacific Building is an innovative fit-out and construction company delivering high quality projects throughout the UK and Ireland, working across a variety of sectors, including commercial, leisure and retail.
Corinne Hutton, quadruple amputee and founder of Finding Your Feet, visited Pacific’s headquarters in Hillington to accept the donation from Managing Director Brian Gallacher (pictured).
On receipt of the cheque, Corinne commented: “We were really surprised to get the call from Pacific Building to say they would be donating £500 to Finding Your Feet as we’re aware we are still a relatively new charity that many people haven’t yet heard of. This money will make a huge difference and help people facing life-changing physical trauma to get back on their feet again. We are extremely grateful to Pacific Building and hope this is the start of a long-term relationship with them.”
Corinne, a single mum-of-one from Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire, had her hands and feet amputated in June 2013 after contracting septicaemia. Soon after, she started the charity Finding Your Feet to help others who find themselves in her situation. She is due to be the first person in the UK to undergo a double hand transplant later this year, a pioneering operation to be performed at Leeds General Infirmary, led by Professor Simon Kay. Kay carried out the UK’s first successful single hand transplant on Mark Cahill in December 2012. Finding Your Feet offers a support network to those who find themselves facing life-changing trauma, by means of financial assistance, advice and emotional support. The charity has already received the backing of celebrity A-listers including Mel Gibson, Robert Carlyle, Gerard Butler, Vinnie Jones, Andy Murray, Lorraine Kelly and Ford Kiernan – all of whom have donated their signed handprints to highlight the cause.
08-13 LOCAL NEWS_249_JUNE15.ind.indd 10
Managing Director Brian Gallacher presented the cheque to Corinne and commented: “What an inspiring person Corinne is – and so deserving of our cheque. We know she’ll put the money to good use to help people who are facing overwhelming odds overcome adversity and lead full and exciting lives. “We are only too happy to show our social conscience in this significant year for us, and to help such a well known charity as Finding Your Feet is an honour.” Anyone wishing to donate to Finding Your Feet, can do so at www.findingyourfeet.net.

Quarriers’ Edinburgh Night Ride SSAFA Forces 20th - 21st June 2015 50 miles, one night. See the city in a new light.
The Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire & Inverclyde Branch of SSAFA Forces Help, the Armed Forces Charity founded in 1885, reported another successful year at its well attended AGM held recently at the Old Library, Kilbarchan with the Branch President HM Lord Lieutenant Guy WNH Clark FSI JP in the chair. The Branch, one of twenty-two in Scotland, supports those who serve in our Armed Forces, those who used to serve and the families of both.
Take part in this unique charity challenge that takes place when the rest of the city sleeps. Hundreds of cyclists will take to the streets of Edinburgh, taking in the iconic sights of the beautiful capital city. The route includes The Royal Mile, Castle, Scott Monument, Arthur’s Seat, and great views from the Royal Observatory plus many more attractions. This will be the second year this event will take place after the huge success last year. Sign up now to take part in this great cycle event! During the last year to December 31st, 2015 the Branch had sourced and distributed goods and services to 162 veterans and their families in our local community to the value of £138,677 and administered a further £23,255 paid to Annuitants. The qualifying criterion for assistance in time of need is to have received one day’s pay in the Armed Forces (including National Service) or in the Merchant Navy if the ship had been contracted to the MoD. SSAFA welcomes enquiries from those who have served, or who are serving, in our Forces and the families of both who are in need and require practical assistance. In addition SSAFA represent most other Military and Merchant Navy Charities. Volunteering with SSAFA is a very satisfying experience and right now the Branch, which has no paid staff, is looking for volunteers to help with Case Working, Administration, IT and Publicity & Fundraising. Full training is given and expenses paid; it is appreciated that time is the most precious commodity that a volunteer can give.

Sma’ Shots Day Saturday 4 July at Abbey Close and Paisley town centre One of the oldest workers’ festivals in the world is back for 2015 - and this year’s event is going to be bigger and better than ever. The day helps celebrate the town’s proud textile history by marking the victory of Paisley’s weavers over the town’s mill owners in the 19th century. The owners refused to pay their staff for the Sma’ (small) Shot thread, which was unseen but held together the famous Paisley-patterned cashmere shawls. A long fight and political battle ensued which the weavers eventually won and renamed the traditional July holiday Sma’ Shot Day. Expect family fun throughout the day in the town centre, kicking off with a parade led by the beating of the Charleston Drum, with the day ending with a bang during the spectacular Burning of the Cork. There will also be an appearance from the Slug in a Bottle market with an exciting mix of vintage items and contemporary/traditional craft and design, including silversmith jewellery, up-cycled and recycled accessories, vintage/ retro homewares and handcrafted products.
Renfrew Gala Day Sunday 7 June, 1pm - 4pm at Robertson Park, Renfrew Admission Free Enjoy an afternoon of fun-filled activities fit for a superstar at Renfrew Gala Day 2015. Family Activities - Enjoy a tale or two in our storytelling tent, explore Renfrewshire Libraries’ new ‘Skoobs Mobile’, make your very own green screen Superstar Photo in our art tent or catch a glimpse of the Superstars of tomorrow in our new Youth Culture tent, Or you can celebrate the International Year of Light with a trip to the Caravan Obscura, a unique light installation packed inside a caravan! On Site Activities and Entertainment - There are plenty other activities to keep you busy during the day including: 30 Acres Skateboard Competition; Teen Tent; Petting Zoo; Free Inflatable Fun for all the family; Strathclyde Fire and Rescue; Preservation Group; Renfrewshire Development Trust; Farmers market; Stalls; Fairground Rides; Tea Room

Dental Blog
by Sheila Macintyre, Practice Owner, Kilbarchan Dental Practice
National Smile Month runs until June 18 and is a UK-wide campaign to promote oral health.
Dentists and other Health Professionals, Schools, Community and Workplace Groups across the country are all encouraged to get involved in whatever way they can by running events, promotions and activities. Here at Kilbarchan Practice we will be supporting this worthwhile initiative in a number of ways. To tie in with Kilbarchan’s Lilias Day on Saturday 6 June, we are delighted to be a sponsor of the event. We will also be running a stall on the day with lots of goodie bags and members of our team on hand to give you information about dental health and to answer any queries about the practice. Kids up to the age of seven can also take part in our Lilias Day Toothbrush Exchange – drop off your old toothbrush at our practice in the morning or at our Lilias Day stall in the afternoon and we’ll replace it with a new one absolutely free! Remember toothbrushes should be replaced every 3 months anyway! You can also enter our Facebook competition to think of a local place or street that has a dental link – no matter how tenuous (i.e.. “Smile Street”). Our favourite suggestion will receive a goodie bag. If your group or organisation would like to get involved in National Smile Month visit the website at www. nationalsmilemonth.org If you would like to find out more about dental health and hygiene, come and see us at Kilbarchan Dental Practice or at our stall on Lilias Day, call us on 01505 704969 or click www. kilbarchandental.co.uk

The West End Festival 5th - 28th June The West End Festival is Glasgow’s largest cultural event and every June takes over this popular area of Glasgow with a wide variety of events and performances. Last year over 400 events took place in 80 venues. In 2015 it celebrates its 20th year. Over 100 Glasgow-based organisations, arts groups and local and international artists deliver a mixture of activities and projects, overseen by a small festival team. The WEF brings all of these activities together in the festival programme and includes events, exhibitions, performances, talks, tours, workshops and screenings, and many are free of charge to allow accessibility. The WEF’s ethos is to include participants and venues that can complement the already diverse programme. More than 1 million visitors have attended the event since it started and last year the festival encompassed over 400 events in 80 venues across the west end. The festival is supported with funding from Creative Scotland. Glasgow City Council also helps fund the festival.

Langbank Camera Club
It was our last meeting for this session. We started with a report on the audiovisual day 4 members had attended at Bothwell with guest speaker Tony Collinson from Leeds. He had demonstrated how to use of some of the programmes now available and looked at producing both good images and sound then combining these to make sequences with both spoken words and sound effects. We came back with loads of great tips and ideas. We then held our AGM - this was completed in record time! so we could get onto our annual competition with 10 entries!!. Hugh (with his wife) did a show on Dolly Parton’s song ‘9 - 5’. This was followed by ‘Glasgow Cats’ by Fiona. She had heard the song and made a superb
Our May club meeting was the last of the current 2014/2015 session and what a good night was had by all with plenty of discussion, nibbles and refreshments. The club is thriving at the moment as we continue to attract new members. Hopefully this trend will be carried forward into the new session beginning September 2015.
AV with very appropriate images of cats. David used a calendar to produce ‘ Anchors Aweigh’. We went to Spain with Gerry to visit the Carnival El Saucejo. Our newest member Ronnie did ‘Extra Life’ featuring life 100 years ago and was shot in Dumbarton. In contrast Val showed this year’s Kilmacolm show held 2 days before. We visited outer space with Bill for ‘Lighthouse’ 1978. Kate covered the Gryffe Camera Club outing to Millport in 2013 with a lot of well-known faces. Adrian showed a sequence in the making about Chi-chi the Panda’s travels. We finished with Colin’s ‘Bike Ride’ - the annual nudist cycle ride round a London park - very funny with appropriately positioned handle bars!! They were all great sequences but David (chair) chose Fiona’s as the best so she won the prize! It was a great way to finish the session. We will all now be out and about taking images and planning our next sequences. We will be back in September for our new session.
Kilmacolm Camera Club The “official” Camera Club season is over for another year. However, this doesn’t mean that members enter a state of photographic “torpor” until September! We have various Club outings planned over the summer months. Last month we took a small trip to Port Glasgow and Greenock, on a rather wet and windy evening. Despite the unfriendly weather, there were still opportunities for some good images. Four of them are shown here.
The print competition for May was ‘Macro Photography’ - larger than life-size images. The prints submitted ranged from a jokey image of a Makro warehouse store, a computer circuit board which looked like a cityscape, flowers and insects. As always the standard of the entries submitted was very high. First place was awarded to Derrick McPherson for his image of a widow spider spinning a deadly web. Second place was awarded to James Goodall for his bee collecting nectar and third place was awarded to Campbell Watson for image of the inside of a tulip. The theme for the April meeting of the Projected Digital Image (PDI) evening was ‘Cityscapes’ which provided a glimpse of the wonderful skylines of the UK and around the globe. As mentioned last month we will showcase some of the images from our PDI evenings in the July and August editions of the Advertizer. Our next meeting will be held on Monday 14 September. More details will be provide nearer the time in the Gryffe Advertizer and our website. Membership of the club is only £10 for the first year. If you wish to find out more about Langbank Camera Club please visit our website: www. langbankcameraclub.weebly.com or contact Derrick McPherson at langbankcc1@gmail.com with your enquiries.
21 June. This is a chance to savour some of Scotland’s most dramatic scenery – but remember to wear your most substantial hiking boots!
Other outings planned for the summer include the Forth and Clyde Canal at Maryhill (9 June), Irvine Harbour (14 July), Ardrossan/Troon (11 August) and Greenock Cut (8 September). If you’re interested in joining us on any of these jollies, we set off from the Cross at 7.00 – you’ll be very welcome, whether beginners or experts. We also plan to take a longer excursion to Glencoe and Glen Etive on Sunday

As we have reported on many occasions we are a small club who are interested in sharing our collective experience and also learning about all things pertaining to photography. Increasingly this involves learning new skills with digital devices, including computers, since that has become an essential element of many photographic techniques. Remember taking a memorable photograph is not all about the equipment you own. Please come along if you wish to join a photographic club where the meetings are informal and give plenty of opportunity for discussion. Johnstone Town Hall Opening Ceilidh A fabulous evening was had by all at the opening of the magnificent new Johnstone Town Hall on Saturday 16th May. The large audience were entertained by locally based Ceilidh Band, Clamjamfrie who were exceptionally proud to have been asked to play at the new venue. They were welcomed by Johnstone guitarist, Joe Logue, and put through their paces by Jane Fawcett, a well known face for her work at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park and “Classic at Castle Semple” car show. Everyone was delighted during the break with a rendition of “Ye Canny Shove Yer Granny aff a Bus” ably sang by local school children Ellie and Eva. There was also a gentleman there who had played at the opening of the old Town Hall who found the night an emotional one.

with Colin Fyfe of Colcom I have recently been hearing more frequently of people getting caught up in online computer repair transactions. The repair company advertises on the user’s computer a number to call for a computer cleanup, this can appear as an internet browser pop-up window, probably on the back of a toolbar, or it may present in an actual program window that has come from a dodgy download. The user could also be getting a cold call on the matter of a computer repair.
was so badly corrupted by whatever software they used, that the machine needs reformatted. I am all for progress and remote support applications have been a boon for technicians like me but any domestic repair via this medium is always limited in depth and scope, the charge should reflect that. More importantly, someone accessing your computer must have your complete trust in the matter; there are too many crooks in cyberland.
These dubious online services are quite successful in duping us in to willingly parting with our cash and are a lot more common than you may believe. They will often present themselves as credible ‘Microsoft Certified’ support technicians and will use quite sophisticated images and graphics in their branding to lure in paying customers. The problem I have with these remote service vendors is that they primarily remove aspects of the very software that produced the advert in the first place. There will invariably be an increase in performance as a result but the charge for a remote repair can be north of £100; my accountant would love for me to charge half that, and I have to pay for my petrol! I recently had to pick up the pieces of one of these repairs and the machine

Canals and Tunnels: Draining Barr Loch The final big drainage scheme was to drain Barr Loch, but keep Castle Semple Loch full of water. This scheme was the inspiration of another local landowner. In 1813, Adam of Barr purchased the whole of Barr Loch, plus about 100 acres of Castle Semple Loch. The first part of his plan was to dig a circular ditch, or canal, right round Barr Loch, to prevent the water from the burns pouring in, and carry their water into Castle Semple Loch.
Johnstone History Society Johnstone History Society has just had the last meeting of this session. This was a Beetle Drive our first and proved to be very successful and everyone present enjoyed themselves. Our meetings restart on Tuesday 8th September in the Masonic Hall Collier Street at 7.30pm, any new members or visitors will be made very welcome. Our speaker that evening will be Allan Driver his subject will be “From Cottage to Castle, from Meeting Place to Cathedral” this being the story of the Coats family. The Museum situated in Morrison’s at the Collier Street end will be open as usual all through the summer on Wednesday Friday and Saturday from 10.30am till 4pm. Our website at www.johnstonehistorymuseum.org is already attracting attention.
The second plan was to carry the water away from Barr Loch to the Black Cart down a canal which would bypass Castle Semple loch. Adam started the lower end of his drain at the Black Cart near Elliston Bridge, where the outfall can still be seen. The next 800 metres were in full view of Castle Semple House and had to be buried in a stone-lined tunnel. The tunnel then changed to the open canal which can still be seen following the south side of Castle Semple Loch. The canal connected to Barr Loch via a tunnel under the causeway which crossed the lochs. The scheme was carried out in 1814 by masons and Irish navvies. The water at the lowest point of Barr Loch, which was too low to drain away naturally, was raised from the loch bed up into the canal by a pump driven by a water wheel at Hole of Barr. Although the works cost £10,000, the annual profit generated from oats and hay grown in the former loch bed, was about £1,500 a year, and the scheme paid for itself in a few years. Barr Loch had become ‘Barr Meadows’ and Adam’s scheme kept 170 acres of former loch bed dry and under crop for more than 131 years. One morning in 1946, locals were astonished to wake up and find that what had for generations been green meadows, was now a loch again. A lack of maintenance had led to the failure of the sluices and the turning of Barr Meadows back into Barr Loch.
In future, the lochs are likely to remain safe from the whims of wealthy landowners, thanks to the establishment of the nature reserve and country park. However, when visiting Castle Semple Loch, it is worth remembering that at various times in the past it was possible in a dry summer, to walk across the loch. © 2015, Stuart Nisbet, Renfrewshire Local History Forum

Be Careful On The Road Stay hydrated Take plenty of water with you as there may not be an easy place to purchase or top-up your water.
Take breaks Get some fresh air and take a break of 20 minutes at least once on a 3 hour journey or every 2 hours on longer journeys.
Feeling tired Short naps of 15 minutes can help to overcome tiredness.
Hayfever Hayfever can be particularly bad in summer, follow these steps to reduce its impact. Wear sunglasses to reduce the impact of bright sunlight and keep the car clear of dirt and dust. Don’t take medication that causes drowsiness and remember to keep tissues in your car.
Loose chippings Chippings can become loose from the road during summer and cause damage to headlights and windscreens, as well as bodywork. Keep your distance and reduce your speed to minimise damage.
Fires Be aware of fires that may be caused by dry verges and embankments being ignited by a heat source such as a cigarette.
Slow vehicles Summer time is a haven for motorists travelling with large loads and agricultural machinery using the roads between fields and farms. Ensure that you overtake in a clear spot with dashed white lines in the centre of the road. Be aware that tractor drivers may be wearing ear protectors so may not hear you approaching and tractors do not have to be fitted with brake lights so may change direction or brake suddenly.
Glare Use a clean and unscratched pair of sunglasses, however, very dark glasses may cause visual difficulties, especially when the light changes. Keep your windscreen clean and ensure the wiper blades are not worn or damaged. Information source:- http://www.mitsubishi-cars.co.uk/owners/summer-driving.aspx

Well Done Everybody
RagBag Recycle Bin Langbank
Memorial - Bridge of Weir and the First World War 100 years ago this month – June 1915 Peter Houston, Mercantile Marine and James Reston, 6th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders
There is now a permanent RagBag Recycle bin sited in the school car park of Langbank Primary School for any of your unwanted textiles (no duvets or pillows). Any money raised from this will go to Langbank Playgroup. If anyone has any items and is unable to get to the recycle bin please call Jacqueline on 01475 540728. Thank you in advance.
On Saturday 25th April members of St Machar’s Ranfurly Church entertained the community with a play, skits and songs, all of which were thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present. Money raised went to both St Vincent’s Hospice and church funds.
Bridge of Weir had no fatalities in May 1915 but June brought more bad news. Peter Houston was the youngest of six born to James Houston, a master joiner in Burngill, Bridge of Weir and Jane Whitehill. But James died young and the family moved to Gryffe View and took in lodgers to make ends meet. By 1901 there were five wage-earners in the family, including Peter, an apprentice tanner. By 1911, Peter (26) was a student marine engineer, improving his prospects in life, and was living in Morton Terrace with a brother and sister. In 1915 Peter was third engineer on the SS Strathnairn, in the Burrell & Son line. It was en route from Penarth to Archangel with a cargo of coal for our Russian allies. By then, Germany had declared the seas around Britain a war zone and that allied ships would be sunk without warning. It was no empty threat. The Lusitania had been torpedoed in May. Unescorted merchant ships were highly vulnerable, but supplies had to be transported. The Strathnairn was spotted by U-boat U22 on 15th June and torpedoed off the Scilly Isles. Peter got into a lifeboat but it was swamped as the ship went down. He was 30 years old. James Reston was born in Buenos Aires. Argentina had close economic links with Great Britain then. By 1911 the Reston family of eight had moved to 1 Windsor Place, Bridge of Weir and James (20) was an iron moulder. He volunteered for the 6th Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, a popular Renfrewshire battalion, with at least seven others from Bridge of Weir. The 6th Argylls arrived in France on 1st May, and was sent to the front line near Festubert. Aside from occasional raiding parties, the battalion was engaged in repairing and strengthening the trenches. James was promoted to lance sergeant, standing out from his colleagues as a leader.
A great deal of hard work, many rehearsals and much fun & laughter went into the production. This is the third year the Masqueraders have been on show and we fully intend to be back next year so keep your eyes open in the New Year for information. We thank everyone who helped behind the scenes and all who attended. See you next year.
The process of relieving 1,000 strong battalions was high risk, with the clustering and movement of men presenting a tempting target if the enemy knew. James Reston was killed by a sniper on 20th June as he was leaving the firing lines, barely seven weeks after he arrived in France. A poem by a comrade appeared in the Gazette soon after, beginning; Swift as a lightning flash the bullet sped, A treacherous shot, it pierced his head; We mourn his loss, yet soon may meet, For death is stalking in our beat. bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir ..................................................... Bridge of Weir Community Council
The Community Council welcomed Chief Inspector Simon Wright, Area Commander responsible for policing 92 square miles that covers Hillington to Renfrew the neighbouring villages from Johnstone to south Ayrshire. He stated that Bridge of Weir is not a high crime area and is a safe place to live and work, however we should not be complacent and reminded everyone to keep their premises secure. The Police have produced guidelines on basic tips for keeping your house safe and for preventing doorstep crime. These can be accessed on our web site at www.bridgeofweir.org The previous month’s crime figures include 1 serious assault in the street, 1 domestic common assault, house breaking where car keys were taken, 2 acts of vandalism at school play areas and 2 road traffic offences. The Chief Inspector reported that the procedures established by the Police for the Community Council were in place. Visitors attending the meeting had an interest in the Whitelint Gate proposals and there was lengthy discussion, however there is little the Community Council can do at this stage until we receive notice of the pre planning consultation date.

The Planning Convener reported on the recent Planning Democracy Conference he attended along with the Chairman, it was a worthwhile day and of considerable benefit for Community Councillors involved in the planning process. The Community Council has learned Greenlight Renewables UK Ltd has lodged four planning applications within Ward 10 for screening opinions to establish if environmental assessments are required for possible solar farms. Screening opinions are not full planning applications, merely an applicant seeking advice on the process. Livery Walk Car park is to undergo resurfacing works, it has not been determined whether the full area will be included or the driveway only. A large pile of building rubble has accumulated at the rear of Livery Walk shops believed from works undertaken on the communal stairway we have demanded this be removed. Further updates can be viewed on our Community Council Facebook page.
The council has received a notice that developers intend to submit a planning application for retail and housing development at Whitelint Gate in Bridge of Weir. The proposal is likely to be for 200 houses, a retail development and a petrol station. If the application is submitted it is likely to be considered by the full council and not the Planning Committee. Planning rules mean that individual councillors cannot express a view – for or against – until the meeting (if they do they cannot then vote on the application). That said, I would welcome your views on this matter. Volunteers from across Bridge of Weir came together to participate in a community clean-up over the weekend of 9th and 10th May. Despite a soaking (the weather was unkind), it was amazing to collect so much rubbish in a few hours by a team of dedicated individuals. Well done and thank you to all involved. There are ongoing problems with parking in the streets around Bishopton Train Station. There will be a consultation with residents on possible measures to improve the situation. The growth of Dargavel means this problem is likely to get worse in the short term – the additional 150 car park spaces are not likely to be in place for another year or so. I was delighted to attend service to mark the 200th Anniversary of Bishopton Parish Church and to share in their celebrations. The parish has produced a book outlining the history of the church and the role it has played in the community. Well worth a read and available from Woodrow’s or from Cornerstone. Well done to local residents and to Langbank Community Council who are in discussions with Transport Scotland over safety concerns with the A8 roundabout. Their perseverance with this issue looks like it could bear fruit – after years of ‘nothing much can be done’ it seems we have the possibility of action being taken. The month of May was an interesting and busy one for politicians! The high general election turnout was good for democracy. Thanks to all who voted and particularly to those who supported my preferred candidates and helped to ring the changes. I am sure our new MP’s will work hard to justify the faith you have put in them. Bridge of Weir Gala Day has as usual taken huge amounts of planning and organisation and I wish to extend my congratulations and best wishes to Gordon Lethorn and the Gala Day Committee. There has been a problem at Houston Road Park with the security gates being forced open leaving the park vulnerable to vehicular vandalism. This restricts the useable area for the youngsters who use it for football and leaves the council with the expense of re-instating the churned-up ground. The council is considering a long-term solution to this problem. There has been agreement that the ditches on either side of Slateford Road, the main southern access road to Dargavel, are not satisfactory and arrangements are going ahead for these to be filled in. The developer has obtained signs to warn of the unusual shared surface road configuration. However, following tests they have reported that the lighting columns are not strong enough to support these, so additional posts will be installed. The other traffic matter to the fore in Bishopton at present is the issue of parking, both near the school at drop-off and pick-up times and at the station where commuter parking is causing inconvenience to local residents. I spoke to Roads Department officers who arranged to visit both locations. A second crossing patrol warden on Old Greenock Road has been recommended and parking restriction options are being considered in Poplar Avenue and Gledstane Road. Meantime, I would urge drivers to park responsibly before leaving their cars and to avoid causing restrictions for delivery vehicles and the collection of refuse. Have a lovely summer! Recently there have been litter picking exercises in all three ward villages. Keen volunteers and myself collected many bags of rubbish that people had discarded. It is a great shame that some people think it is alright to toss their litter. Another pile of waste has appeared in a field near Formakin for the poor farmer to deal with. Council is on the look out to stop fly tipping of waste and I will do what I can to have these people caught and fined. I have also been out on my bike checking up on some of the potholes you have kindly reported, and making sure they have been filled in. Plenty more holes have been reported now. If you know of a road default, then send me the details and I will do what I can to get it repaired. Japanese Knotweed is an invasive non-native species, but there is no risk to public health associated with it. SEPA, SNH and the Forestry Commission are Relevant Bodies in terms of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 which provides them with powers to deal with such non-native species of plants, though it is not illegal to have it in your garden. Council does not have any powers to deal with this vegetation on private land but may treat it if it is on their own land. It usually takes at least three to four seasons to eradicate Japanese knotweed using glyphosate. Thanks to various donations and the community council, Bishopton now has some nice new benches. They should be around for a good few years. As I mentioned in a recent issue of The Advertizer, partial resurfacing of roads within Houston was agreed and included Piper Road, Magnus Road and Fulton Drive. Renfrewshire’s Roads Department has informed me that at a meeting to look at the programming of works the resurfacing of Piper Road will commence on 25th May and should be completed within the week. The resurfacing works on Fulton Drive and Magnus Road will be carried out in the weeks following the completion of Piper Road. Following concerns regarding missing spars on the approach to the footbridge over the river Gryffe between Ardgryffe Crescent and the Oilfields I have been advised that the damaged area has been made safe by Renfrewshire Councils Contract Services. An ownership search has advised that the footbridge and the land either side appears to be owned by Taylor Wimpey Ltd. I had an on-site meeting with Community Services regarding the litter problem off Whirlie Road and on both sides of the footpath leading from Whirlie Road through the underpass to the local shops. I have been assured that litter picking at both areas has been arranged. A Planning Application for the erection of 32 houses and associated works bordering Burnlea Crescent was granted subject to conditions at the recent Planning and Property Board. Please note that there will be no surgeries in June and that my next surgeries will be held on the second Tuesday of July in Brookfield Village Hall from 6pm to 6.30pm then in Houston Village Hall from 7pm to 7.45pm. Planning Decision
I was very disappointed that the Planning Board has now given approval to the application to build thirty two houses at the land ‘East of Fleming Road’, next to the tennis club. As the only one of our four local councillors who formally objected to this development, I believe strongly that whilst development and new housing can be positive, it must be responsibly undertaken and on brownfield sites first. The Scottish Government approved this land for housing and made clear to Renfrewshire Council that more sites should be available. We now have a pre-application notice for land between Brookfield and Houston. I worry about the rapid expansion of our villages without the infra-structure to properly cope. Tesco Linwood

kilmacolm ..................................................... & quarriers The Local Government Boundary Commission for Scotland recently consulted the Council on its proposals for new Council wards in Inverclyde on the back of its recommendation to increase the number of Councillors in Inverclyde from 20 to 22 to take account of the level of deprivation in the area. Although the Council previously argued against this increase on cost grounds the Commission decided to press ahead to the next stage of developing new ward proposals. Under the Commission’s plans the number of wards would increase from 6 to 7 and there would be changes to a number of the existing wards. The current Ward 1 (Inverclyde East), which incorporates Kilmacolm and Quarrier’s Village, would be reduced from a four member ward to a three member ward with a significant area of Port Glasgow moving into Ward 2. At a meeting of the Policy & Resources Executive Sub-Committee on 14 May Councillors decided to maintain the Council’s objection to the increase in the number of Councillors and to make comment on the new ward proposals. Once it has considered the Council’s representations the Commission will put its proposals out to public consultation. Following the withdrawal of two short-listed candidates the post of Kilmacolm Primary School Head Teacher was re-advertised to try to ensure that the selection panel had a number of candidates to choose from. Hopefully the new Head Teacher will be appointed before the end of this term. We are both pleased to have been invited by the Twinning Society to Kilmacolm’s French Day on Saturday 6 June, which kicks off at 10.30 a.m. In the Cargill Centre. There will be a pipe band, choirs and speeches from the Provost, Twinning Society Chair Gerry Boyle and pupils from St Columba’s School and their French visitors. A French Waiters’ Race will then take place in Birkmyre Park and we return to the Cargill Centre for prize giving, wine, cheese, etc. Other French themed activities will be taking place throughout the village during that day. Councillor McColgan - My surgeries this month are on Thursday 18 June, 6.00 – 7.00 p.m., in St Francis’ Primary School and Tuesday 30 June, 6.00 – 7.00 p.m., in Boglestone Community Centre. Unfortunately, I have been unable to write a column for the Advertizer for the past few editions as I was in hospital for three months. I would like to thank everyone who sent cards and get well messages. Now that I have been discharged from hospital any constituents requiring my assistance please contact me. Last month voters in Inverclyde elected my colleague Ronnie Cowan as the district’s new MP. He is hard working and will do his best for his constituents and for Inverclyde. I congratulate Ronnie in becoming our new Member of Parliament. There have been several thefts reported in Kilmacolm recently. I would urge all residents to ensure their garages and garden sheds are locked securely and that constituents seeing anyone acting suspiciously please contact the police. The Kilmacolm Twinning Society have organised a number of activities on Saturday 6 June as part of the French Gala Day for when the guests from the twin village of Merignies are visiting. I am sure it will be a fun packed weekend which the organisers, French guests and local residents will enjoy immensely. This year is the 40th anniversary of the paddle steamer Waverley sailing in preservation. The sailing season is now underway. I have enjoyed sailing doon the Clyde a few times over the years. It is always a good day out on the Waverley and a day’s sail is something that people should consider over the summer. On a slightly larger sailing scale. The new cruise season has now began and it is expected this year that 100,000 passengers will arrive at Greenock’s Ocean Terminal. It is great to see that even more cruise ships and passengers are arriving this year which should help give a further boost to Inverclyde’s local economy. It would be good if we saw more ships starting their cruises from Greenock as I am sure it would be an opportunity to attract more people to our district. This was a suggestion I put to the Ocean Terminal General Manager Andrew Hemphill a few years ago. With plans agreed to now extend berthing opportunities at the Ocean Terminal hopefully this may entice more companies to consider set sailing and finishing their cruises in Greenock. My next surgeries in June will be advertised in the local newspaper and through my surgery posters. Anyone wanting to contact me in between surgeries can do so by phoning me through my office on 01475 712727 or on my mobile number 07747 765 839 or by emailing me at jim.macleod@inverclyde.gov.uk or writing to me at Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Greenock, PA15 1LY.
Save The Children Week On Saturday 2nd May a bucket collection was held in Kilmacolm in aid of Save The Children. The money raised will contribute to disaster relief in Nepal, following the earthquake. Further, during April, many of the village shops collected money on behalf of Save The Children and that will go also towards that disaster relief. Overall, a total of £368.35 was raised. Thank you so much to all who donated to this cause and to our shops for helping. If, in future, anyone in the Advertizer distribution area would like to help the local committee of Save The Children, please contact Liz Finney (01505 873778) who will be pleased to explain what is involved. Kilmacolm Civic Trust “Our Village” Heritage Project “Our Village” is a project by Kilmacolm Civic Trust to engage local children in the built environment of Kilmacolm, by creating an exhibition of local streets, as seen through their eyes. At two architect-led workshops, students of P6 and Transitus of KPS and St Columba’s learned about the role of architects, and the different types of architectural drawings, before producing building elevation drawings, which together created continuous streetscapes.
Each participant received a bespoke certificate and personalised invitation to the “Our Village” exhibition at the Kilmacolm Civic Trust tent at the Agricultural Show, where all the drawings were displayed, including a selection transferred colour or laser-etched slates.
A Big Thankyou Kilmacolm Friends of Ardgowan Hospice thank everyone who supported their Stall at the Agricultural Show on 9th May. The committee is most grateful for the generous donations of baking and bottles. The excellent total of £1,417 was raised.

The appointment of a Head Teacher to the sad and unfortunate vacancy at KPS has taken an inordinate amount of time. I do not believe that the Education HQ has covered itself in glory. Most recently three applicants were due to be interviewed for the position but two pulled out at the last minute. Given that all three must have been qualified to do the job then commonsense says "appoint the one who remains”. No! We are going through the process once again. The Parent Council are well aware of who I would appoint and as I am not part of the selection panel I have expressed my views to the Director. I attended the Kilmacolm Dramatic Society’s presentation of ‘Allo ‘Allo which coincided with the 70th anniversary of the Society. The comedy was superbly acted by the cast and a quite hilarious final scene saw six Hitlers in full regalia on the stage being ridiculed. I wonder what the Daily Record would have made of this if you recollect my May comments. A number of the Victorian style streetlights in Quarriers have been damaged in the recent strong winds; these will be replaced with “ standard “ units until appropriate replacements are secured. Complaints have been made about dog mess around the container beside the football pitch. I was alarmed to discover that there were dog poo bags scattered about and a number slung onto the roof of the container. A combi bin has now been installed by the council next to the container . Thanks to the concerned residents who drew my attention to this anti social behaviour which is particularly concerning as youngsters are involved around the container. I am regularly getting complaints throughout my Ward about these dog poo bags being left on the ground and even hanging on tree branches. I know this is very much a minority of dog walkers who do not dispose of these properly and increasingly there are more bins close to dog walking spots which are regularly emptied by the council. A WW1 memorial bench has been placed at the hard standing at the entrance to the Kilmacolm War Memorial. With the removal of the trees the Memorial is now visible from the village the way it was intended. The demolition of the Institute has commenced and our Building Standards department are monitoring the process. There will be some inconvenience to residents and it should be remembered that a receipt from the sale of the Institute was a necessary contribution to the quite excellent Cargill Centre. Complaints about broken glass and debris on Smithy Brae have been handled. My surgeries are the Cargill 10-11am, 20th and Boglestone Community Centre 6-7pm 25th June. I can be contacted on 01475 712727 and 741969 and 07766 992294 and david.wilson@inverclyde.gov.uk

kilbarchan & lochwinnoch ..................................................... At the April meeting of Kilbarchan Community Council, representatives from Scottish Water were present where they were rigorously questioned on the long standing problem of the discharge of the CSO in the village Habbies will be well aware that this is a problem which has affected parts of the village for decades and while Scottish Water noted that many other areas have a similar issue, it is undoubtedly the case that there are much more frequent episodes with the Kilbarchan CSO which require special attention.

Summer Concert - 30 May
Consequently all the agencies involved from the Scottish Government, Renfrewshire Council, SEPA and Scottish Water all need to redouble their efforts to identify, fund, and deliver a solution I will continue to push them to do so it is now nearly 6 months since the price of oil fell by a half, and I wrote to the bus companies asking them to pass on the benefits to passengers by reducing fares. Their reason for not doing at the time was that they buy their fuel in advance Given that this is the case I have contacted them again to ask if, and when they intend to reduce fares. We can but hope. I have also asked the bus companies to review their service provision on general public holidays .at Easter, on the May holidays, and the September weekend. At present on these public holidays there is a much reduced service from weekdays There are many local people who work on public holidays and families who enjoy a day out and this puts pressure on the reduced service and on drivers. Train companies operate a near normal service, and I a am sure an enhanced bus service on public holidays would be welcomed by passengers At the most recent meeting of Renfrewshire Councils Procurement Sub Committee, I was delighted to support and approve a report which will result in the installation of solar panels at Lochwinnoch Primary School. This is the latest investment by the administration in the school, following the 423 000 spent on the provision of additional classrooms and electrical work The work to install the panels will begin at the end of June and will be completed by the end of the summer holidays. It will help reduce the councils carbon footprint. My next surgeries will be on Saturday 6 June at 9am at the McKillop Institute and 10am at the Steeple Hall. The 6th June is of course Lilias Day in Kilbarchan and Saturday 13th Lochwinnoch Gala Day Thanks as always to the hard work of the respective committees. The Scottish Lion has roared at the Westminster elections and I congratulate Ms Mhairi Black MP, the new MP for Lochwinnoch and Kilbarchan, who is I am certain the youngest member of the Commons in modern terms. I also commiserate with Douglas Alexander, who I think will be remembered for his contribution to international affairs during his term of office. I am very pleased that Kilbarchan now has new Fairtrade village signs, no one was very clear as to why Kilbarchan was originally designated a Fairtrade zone, rather than a Fairtrade village, but myself, and the Kilbarchan Community Council were quick to put Renfrewshire Council right. Over the last month the Kilbarchan Fairtrade Group had a coffee morning which I was delighted to support. My wife and I are active churchgoers and it is a tribute to the long years of campaigning by many in the Church that Fairtrade as a movement has moved from the margins, to the mainstream of society, so that we can all buy their products in our high street stores. Habbies are very proud of their weaving heritage and woven into the rich social tartan of Kilbarchan is concern for others less fortunate and I am sure social reformers which the village is rightly proud of, like Robert Allan, and Mary Barbour, would have said yes to Fairtrade. Along with many other hardy souls I braved the rain on Sunday 26th April to take part in the cycling sportive, Pedal in the Park, which was a fantastic festival of all things cycling at Castle Semple and sponsored by the Clydemuirshiel Park Authority, of which I am proud to be a member. The day had a family, hill climb, and time trial event, as well as stalls and other cycling related activities. Like many others I ended the day damp but happy. My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7.45pm, and my advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm. But I am also always available to constituents who can call me on 07534 148224, tweet me on CllrAndy4Ward8 or e-mail me at cllr.andy.doig@renfrewshire.gov.uk.

Kilbarchan - June 1915 Joseph Wylie’s family lived at 40 High Barholm. In 1908 he emigrated to Canada and lived in Dundas Ontario with his sister. He was a painter and paperhanger. When the war began he enlisted in the 20th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force (Ontario Regiment). He died of spinal meningitis on 2nd May 1915 at the age of 29 and is buried at Dundas Vale Cemetery, Ontario. The following three men died on 28th June 1915, at Gallipoli, fighting the Turks. A major battle took place at Gully Ravine, and also on the Australian front. There was insufficient artillery support and several attacks were made at the point of the bayonet, against machine-gun and rifle fire. Robert Davie served in the 1st King’s Own Scottish Borders, 29th Division. He was 24 when he was killed. Before the war he worked as an engineer. His family lived at Wallaceton, Albert Road, Brookfield. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial. (Photo) William Dunning served in the 8th Cameronians, 52nd (Lowland) Division. The 8th Cameronians headquarters were at 149 Cathedral St, Glasgow. He is buried at Twelve Tree Copse Cemetery, Gallipoli. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission and Soldiers Died each state that he killed and that he was born in Kilbarchan. His medal records state that he died: many died at Gallipoli from water borne illnesses. William Clark Wilson, originally of Priorscroft, Brookfield, emigrated to Australia in 1912. He was learning to farm in the Brisbane area when the war broke out. As he had served in the Yeomanry in Paisley he joined the 5th Australian Light Horse. The Light Horse served as infantry at Gallipoli and 5th Light Horse was holding the line on 28th June. Whether he was killed by shelling or rifle fire is unknown. He is buried at Shell Green Cemetery.
Kilbarchan East Church Open Days As in the last few years, Kilbarchan East Church, Steeple Square, will be open to visit on Tuesdays from 2pm-4pm during the months of June, Jul and August for those who wish a quiet time and to enjoy the grounds of the 230 year old building.
The volunteer help is invaluable to the running of the Centre. Our volunteers have made our garden very beautiful and our reading room a welcoming space. They have helped on numerous occasions to set up tables and chairs and to clear down for a variety of activities. We are always extremely grateful to the number of loyal supporters who give us an annual donation. A number of meetings from small groups and business training seminars have been held in the Community Room. We can supply a cold buffet, tea, coffee and biscuits. Parking is available behind the houses on Ewing Street off Barn Green. The Centre is closing for the month of July and re-opening on Tuesday, 4th August. www.kipcokil.com

Kilbarchan all set for Lilias Day Festival! One of Scotland’s oldest and most historic village events is all set for Saturday 6 June culminating in a spectacular sky-dive. WALKING HISTORY Kilbarchan’s Lilias Day celebrations date back to the 1700s when the village was a centre of the weaving trade in Renfrewshire Today it is firmly established as a highlight of the Renfrewshire events calendar. A historic parade featuring groups of characters in full period costume still leads the celebrations and is followed through the village by a stream of decorated floats, pipe and brass bands and groups taking part in the day’s festivities. In the parade this year look out for new characters representing notable people from Kilbarchan’s past such as Mary Barbour, Robert Semple and even the Statue of Liberty. The parade finishes in Kilbarchan Park where a host of stalls, activities and events take place to raise thousands of pounds for good causes. Along the way the statue of Kilbarchan’s famous piper, “Habbie Simpson” on the steeple in the village square is brought to life and joins the parade. VIVA LILIAS DAY!
some of their skills in the park. The hugely popular “Wish Upon a Star” entertainers be making another special appearance with some popular princesses and heroes that festival-goes will recognise from the big screen animations. There will also once again be the opportunity for families to try their hand at archery following successful “have a go” sessions last year. Local residents and businesses will dress the outside of their premises with prizes for best the decorated house and business as well as for best decorated float. A youth challenge, tug of war competition, intervillage football match between Kilbarchan and Bridge of Weir and a dog show also form part of this fabulous day with Radio Clyde DJ George Bowie lined up to compere on the day. LILIAS DAY ESSENTIALS The organising committee are delighted with the way the day has shaped up and chairman, Graeme Stockton, says: “We are sticking with the earlier start time of 1pm to allow longer for festivalgoers to enjoy the range of events and activities in Kilbarchan Park climaxing at 4.30pm with the skydive finale and the drawing of our £1000 raffle winner by Miss Lilias herself!
Organisers have continued developing new themes, activities and events to build a “festival” theme with a food village, entertainment zone and new park layout launched last year together with an events arena and music tent. In a new addition medieval re-enactment group Britannia XIV will set up camp for the day to show off their combat skills and crafts. Also making their debut this year will be Big Top Circus Skills who will add some animation to the parade before passing on

Lilias Day Artwork - created by Local Artist A Kilbarchan artist has created artwork especially for this years Lilias Day. My Moon Garden artist, Kay Nicholson, has created a wonderful Kilbarchaninspired composition that will be used on Lilias Day merchandise to be sold to raise money for the event. Given the challenge of using a single colour, Kay came up with the idea of designing a willow pattern of Kilbarchan. She included some of the well-known buildings, a few friends’ houses and some imagination to create the Lilias Day artwork. She wanted to make the theme of family important as Kilbarchan is such a family orientated village and also wanted to include some of the old with some of the new. The rainbow that is featured brings the promise that the troubles of today will surely come to pass, hold strong in your vision and the rainbow will bring fresh beginnings and new prosperity. The end of the rainbow signifies a pot of gold and the magic that surrounds dreams coming true. A range of “Lilias Day” merchandise will feature the lovely design including bags, cards and limited edition prints. Merchandise will be available from the Lilias Day stall on the day or on request via Facebook, Twitter or via email info@ liliasday.co.uk Artwork ‘Lilias Day’ copyright Kay Nicolson, My Moon Garden Find Kilbarchan Lilias Day on facebook Follow on twitter: @LiliasDay Email: info@liliasday.co.uk

Some good news as the new Broadband service is now available for Howwood. This has taken a long time and a thanks to everyone involved in bringing this to the village. There is still no sign of a formal planning application for housing at the former St Cuthberts school site. A number of people from Howwood have expressed an interest in this and I will let readers know of any future developments. The planning appeal made by Bowfield as I write this is still to be determined by the Scottish Government again I will update you as soon as possible. Remember I can be contacted on cllr.iain.mcmillan@renfrewshire.gov.uk

Beach Safety for Dogs Summer is on the way and we can look forward to spending some more time in the great outdoors with our furry companions. Many dogs thoroughly enjoy a good day at the beach but there are some important safety considerations to ensure your beach visit doesn’t result in a vet visit! Important points to remember include : • Check the tide times before you go. • Take plenty of poo bags. • Make sure your dog has a collar, ID tag and preferably a microchip. • Don’t assume your dog can swim. All dogs have to learn to swim just like us. If your dog is not used to swimming then the sea is not the best place to start so make sure he doesn’t get out of his depth. • Dogs will drink salt water, but it can make them vomit, or worse lead to potentially fatal salt poisoning. Ensure you have plenty of fresh water to keep you both hydrated. • Consider a life vest if you are planning to swim, sail or surf with your dog. Waves and currents can quickly exhaust your dog, especially in cold water. • Consider a doggie sunscreen – especially for dogs with thin or pale fur and apply to areas such as the nose and ears. • Don’t overdo it. Running on sand is more tiring than on grass, so don’t expect your dog to be able to run and play for as long as he might on his normal walk. • Make sure your dog has a shady area to rest in and remember that sand can be scorching on paws on a hot day. • Be careful to avoid heat stroke – watch for signs of overheating such as excessive panting, drooling, coordination problems, vomiting and/or diarrhoea and collapse. • At the end of the day check your dog over thoroughly for cuts and scrapes, rinse him thoroughly to remove salt and sand from his coat and paws and dry him to ensure he does not get chilled. Most importantly, have fun!

Bridge of Weir Hort. Society This month the Society welcomed David Menzies formerly Assistant Curator, Glasgow Botanic Gardens. David’s topic was “A Plantsman in Costa Rica”. This country is located between Nicaragua and Panama and similar in size to Scotland - but that’s where the similarity ends! Growing in Costa Rica’s tropical climate are 1500 native Orchids. The forest floors are dense with plants, such as Tree Ferns and Bamboo; the Orchids grow up tree trunks, along with Ferns, Lichens and Mosses. Climbers we recognise as indoor plants such as Petrea volubilis and Passion Flower break through the tree canopy and, in sunnier spots, Bromeliads, Busy Lizzies, Begonias and Dahlias may be seen. To make the most of this trip of discovery, David took the “Skywalks” through the trees. These are lengthy, suspended walkways which stretch across ravines and valleys. A cool nerve is required but the sights from above the tree canopies are stunning. Another form of transport for the eco-tourist is the “Aerial Tramway” with cable cars which glide silently through the forests. As it is so quiet, this is the best way to see the wonderful bird life. Farming is a way of life in Costa Rica with the verdant slopes being cleared for dairy cattle,

crops and sugar cane. The volcanic ash on the slopes of Mt Irazu is so fertile and mineral-rich, farmers work the soil, despite their proximity to the dormant volcano. There has been no eruption since the day in 1963 when President Kennedy visited the Island but the potential is there. On Costa Rica there are numerous botanic gardens including the Lankester Botanical Garden established in 1917 by an English coffee grower, Charles Lankester West who had a passion for Orchids. The Wilson Botanical Garden is a must for photographers being home to a mammoth collection of palms, as well as diverse plantings of beautiful tropical and subtropical ornamentals and rare and endangered plants from Costa Rica. The five acre garden of Bali Rica is well worth a trip, if only to arrive by sea and step on to a beach fringed with palm trees. The coconuts are washed into the Pacific and taken to other islands in the Caribbean. The garden is being landscaped by the owners, Mac and Sharon McIver who have settled at Bali Rica from America. This is a new, evolving botanical garden planted with indigenous plants and trees, including fragrant Ylang Ylang and Mango and mighty stands of Bamboo. At ground level there are Heliconias, Orchids and Ginger and up in the trees a colourful array of Toucans, scarlet Macaws, Parrots and Hummingbirds. Meanwhile, back on the Costa del Clyde, we gardeners wait for the Jet Stream to move north and the cool, damp weather to leave us so that our own gardens can progress. The Society plans an outing to Ardarden on Saturday 20th June and any member who wishes transport should contact one of the Committee if they would like a lift. Meanwhile, good gardening!

Gardening in June Looking for long-lasting colour in your garden? Then put on a dazzling display of the hardy perennial Anemone Japonica, flowering from August right through to late October with masses of blooms in various colours [illustrated.] Plant in well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Mulch around plants each year, and be prepared to lift and divide clumps if they spread beyond their bounds. Divide plants March/April. Konigan Charlotte previously known as ‘Queen Charlotte’, is a handsome variety of Japanese anemone brightening up the autumn garden with its soft pink, semi-double flowers which have dark purple shading on the reverse.
Honorine Jobert is a particularly choice variety with white, single flowers tinged with pink on the underside of the petals.
September Charm has masses of large, rosy pink, cup-shaped flowers on tall wiry stems. One of the most reliable and free-flowering of the Japanese anemones.

Kilbarchan Beekeepers Alliums, cornflowers, foxgloves, globe thistles, geums, lavenders and flowering herbs all plants that sustain the growing colonies of honey bees at this time of year. To do your part in supporting wildlife, leave areas of you garden to allow the growth of wildflowers, maybe an area of lawn free from mowing, so clover, daisies and dandelions can grow and feed honeybees and other pollinating insects. In June beekeepers continue to monitor the hives for signs from the bees that may be looking to swarm and take appropriate action to manage / prevent this. The colonies are growing substantially and honey production begins, weather and nectar sources permitting.
Apiary Visit - The Kilbarchan Beekeepers 1st Apiary Visit took place Sunday 10th May. This was an opportunity for all Beekeepers, experienced and novice alike to go through some hive management techniques with one of Scotland’s most experienced beekeepers. There was a good turnout, even with the changeable weather, but lady luck was with us and the rain stopped and clouds broke to allow the inspection to continue. The group consisted of adults of all ages and children, experienced and people new to beekeeping, hoping to gain knowledge and the possibility of having their own bees during the season. We have another visit planned in June, if you are interested in attending, the details are below. Interested? - If you are interested in beekeeping for yourself or the whole family, anyone is welcome. Contact Ian Craig, the Kilbarchan and District Beekeepers Association Secretary on 01505 322684 or via e-mail beekeeper30@ btinternet.com if you would like to know more! You could maybe join us over the spring and summer months at one of the Apiary Visits as shown above. The Club has spare suits for most sizes and can be arranged if notified in advance. Daytime Programme 2015/16 7th June - Apiary Visit 2 - Donal Giltinan; 26th July - Apiary Visit 3 - Ian Craig KBA hold evening meetings during Autumn & Winter months in The Steeple Halls, Kilbarchan between 7.30–10pm. You can come along and find out more about Honeybee husbandry and related topics. Evening Programme 2015/16 8th September - Local Nectar and Pollen Sources & identification of Honey - Ian Craig; 13th October - How Beekeeping is Affected by Chemicals & Farming Practices - Mark Ballingall; 10th November - Honey Show Judge: Claud Wilson; 8th December - AGM; 12th January - Beekeeping DVD’s - Peter Stromberg; 9th February - Basic Bee Anatomy - Alan Riach; 8th March - A to Z of Swarm Control - Phil McAnespie

Colourful Kilmacolm We hope that by the time you read this you will be able to see the fruits of our labours during May. It was a very busy month. As members will know, the planters in the Piazza had to be replaced because of a manufacturing fault, giving us the chance to amend the size and colour to reflect the feedback we had received earlier. Teams of members spent three mornings emptying the planters and another morning putting the new ones in place and refilling them. A lot of hard work, so if you preferred the previous ones please just keep it to yourself! A visit to our favourite nursery then took place, and plants were chosen for all our sites – Piazza, Birkmyre Park, Market Place, Time Capsule border and half-barrels. This was obviously a sizeable order, and only possible with the financial support of Inverclyde Council, Awards for All and Keep Scotland Beautiful. With the plants delivered, it was then time for our gardeners to get planting, one of the more enjoyable aspects of our work. Now we just have to hope for a summer of good weather. Members indulged in a bit of gentle mountaineering as they planted up the sloping bank at the Pullman Diner, cleared of assorted debris in April. Some of the plants had previously been part of our winter displays, but many were garden surplus donated by members and local supporters. Our grateful thanks to all who helped us in this way. Have a look at the site for yourself and if you have something in your garden which is surplus to requirements and which you think would fit in well, let us know. We would like to have a fair proportion of plants that have some winter interest, although herbaceous plants will also have a place. Our 3rd AGM was held on 11th May and maintained our pattern of ‘short and sweet’ meetings. There was an excellent turnout and everyone took the opportunity to socialise at the end.

To support our work you can join Colourful Kilmacolm, with the option of becoming one of our volunteer gardeners. Membership forms can be downloaded from our website www.colourfulkilmacolm.org.uk or you can phone Peter (01505 872448) or Diane (01505 872611). Our website also has lots of photographs of what we have been up to so far.
We can but hope. Beginning during the last week in May, the Group set about clearing the spring flowers from the street planters and barrier baskets to make way for the summer plants. Our Clean Up Weekend on 9-10 May was quite successful, up to a point: the weather on Sunday wasn’t nice, so we cut that short. And on the Saturday, one of regular volunteers broke her wrist picking up a discarded soft drinks can! (There’s a bit more detail about this on our Facebook page, if you’re curious.) Still, we filled about 100 giant bin-bags with assorted rubbish dropped by the ‘couldn’t-care-less-brigade’, as well as a tyre, a door, a chest of drawers, a kitchen unit and a couple of old rugs. All of this within a few metres of Main Street! Apparently the Council cleansing people, who collect the rubbish that we gather from pre-arranged points after our Clean-Up Weekends, had to go back to base and get a bigger lorry. Thanks are due to Clean Up Scotland and Greggs, who teamed up to provide us with safety tabards and cakes for our helpers on the weekend. Anyway, we have already ordered most of our summer plants, and should have received them by the time the Advertizer goes to print. We made a few last-minute purchases during the week after Clean-Up, and our picture shows some of the Group on that trip to a Renfrewshire nursery. The person on the left of the picture is Eileen, the volunteer who broke her wrist on Saturday, back in at the deep end. Ah, that irrepressible Bridge of Weir spirit! As we move in to summer, we hope that residents and visitors to Bridge of Weir will enjoy a glorious floral display throughout our village. And remember, you can support us by visiting our Strawberries and Cream stall in Houston Road Park on Gala Day, June 13th. www.brighterbridgeofweir.org facebook.com/brighterbridgeofweir

Windows on Wildlife The Windows on Wildlife Project aims to bring people closer to wildlife, gaining a unique insight to the furry & feathered inhabitants of Castle Semple Country Park. Project Officer Hayley Douglas gives us an update. Wildlife News - The last few weeks have been busy for the WoW Project. The school photography workshops have started up again and the pupils are getting to grips with macro photography. I haven’t been able to check the trail cameras as regularly but everything seems to be going well with both the otter and badger families. One piece of footage caught on the otter camera shows the female playing with the two cubs only for Rob, the dog otter to appear. He is probably the Father of the cubs and would have come over to investigate the noise. He didn’t get a friendly reception though and was quickly attacked and chased off by the female. The cubs are looking incredibly healthy and will be 9 months old at the start of June. After asking viewers of The Riverside Show on STV Glasgow to suggest names for the two new badger cubs, their names were picked from a shortlist and they will now be known as Salt and Pepper. This has led to me receiving various messages which includes the link to Salt ‘N’ Peppa’s hit ‘Push it’ so it’s great to see people approve! The cubs’ first meeting with their big sister and brother, Rough and Tumble, was captured on camera and all seems to be well with the family. A wee surprise recently took place at Muirshiel. I had my mist nets out as part of a ringing demonstration and the last bird I caught was a ringed blue tit. I took it out the net thinking it was one I had done earlier in the day but upon reading the ring I realised it had been ringed in my garden as a breeding female, in Lochwinnoch the previous summer. It’s amazing that it was now, a year later, visiting the feeders at Muirshiel. What is unusual about this is that it’s rare for blue tits to travel more than a few miles from where they were initially ringed and this one was 5 miles away. I wonder if she will come back to my garden to breed this year. If you see a ringed bird, including the swans and geese at Castle Semple, make a note of their ring number and enter it into the British Trust for Ornithology’s website to find out more about that particular bird - www.bto.org. Events - I will be attending Hessilhead Wildlife Rescue’s Open Day demonstrating bird ringing which takes place on Sun 14 June between 12.00 and 16.00 hrs. It’s a great opportunity for everyone to find out how the wildlife hospital runs and to see the patients that are in being cared for. Come along and say hello. More Info… Details can be found on the Park’s website www.clydemuirshiel. co.uk or by emailing wow@clydemuirshiel.co.uk. Footage can be viewed on the Park’s Youtube channel or on the WoW Facebook page. Illustrated talks to groups can be arranged. Gryffe Valley Rotary Running For The Community Over the past few years, Gryffe Valley Rotary has progressed a number of projects in support of the local community. The first was to acquire a special hoist which could lift disabled sailors from a wheelchair into a specially adapted dinghy at Castle Semple Loch. This cost some £2K and helped Clyde Muirshiel Country Park to be the first place in Scotland to achieve Centre of Excellence status under the RYA Sailability scheme. The next project was more ambitious – to acquire for around £7K a further specially adapted dinghy at Castle Semple. To help kick-start fund raising for this, the first 10K Run was organised around Houston/Bridge of Weir. The well supported run, together with generous sponsorship from Bridge of Weir Leather and others, raised the necessary cash, and everyone was thrilled when The Princess Royal came along to Castle Semple to make the formal handover. The dinghy subsequently featured in the Race2theGames sail up the River Clyde in the lead up to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Even before the Wheelyboat handover, Gryffe Valley had already identified another project in our local community. This is to provide Therapeutic and Sensory toys for a new resource library facility at Corseford school, working in collaboration with Capability Scotland. These specialist and expensive resources will help to meet the developmental, therapeutic and cognitive needs of disabled children from across the West of Scotland. At least £10K is required, and once again the recent 10K Run was used to start the fundraising process. A great field of some 80 runners, from as far afield as Edinburgh and Ayr and aged from 17 to the 70’s, raced round the course in record time. With individual sponsorship, and donations for Rotary Ladies post event purvy, some £2K was raised towards the new project. Hopefully it wont be too long before we can report that another community project has been fully funded!
Last years 10K Run started fund raising for an even more challenging project. This was to find some £31K for a special Wheelyboat – a roll on/roll off flat bottomed boat which enables those who are unable to leave their wheelchair to get onboard with their carers and enjoy the thrill of powered sailing on the water at Castle Semple. Again the 10K Run set the ball rolling, and with contributions from a good number of local businesses and trusts, and from the Wheelyboat Trust and some of it’s sponsors, the funds were raised and the special boat was manufactured. Following a naming competition, the “DISCOVERY” was formally launched and named at a well attended event at Castle Semple in May. Double Olympic Gold Medal winner Shirley Robertson came along to perform the ceremony – the photos show her out in the boat with David Hill from Clyde Muirshiel Country Park and Gryffe Valley President Angus Matheson.

Kilmacolm & Port Glasgow Agricultural Show The Show was blessed with the sunniest, driest day of the month, & for many years, resulting in the highest turnout for ages. The new hard track which was laid down to cope with muddy conditions was, fortunately, not needed.
The Light Horse Section experienced a record turnout of competitors old & new from across the Central Belt, Ayrshire & Argyll, the Showjumping, Hunter & Pony classes particularly delighting the spectators, whilst the new Wobblies Cross-country course & the Horse & Hound Jumping class, where the first half of the course was tackled by horse & rider & the second half by rider & dog, were particularly well received by competitors.
In an age of falling entries there was nevertheless a good showing in the Cattle & Sheep classes. The Clydesdale horses proved popular, with the addition of a ridden class, as did the Highland cattle, with a growing number of high class entries from across the West.
The Industrial Section suffered from falling entries but maintained a high standard with great support from Kilmacolm Primary & Nursery Schools, & Duchal Nursery School.

The children’s’ Pet Show gave the youngsters a chance to show off their favourites, all the exhibitors receiving a rosette & some sweeties, & the Dog Show experienced record entries, giving handlers of all ages the chance to show off their pets in a variety of classes. Entertainment was provided by Country Capers, music & dance were provided by the talented St Columba’s School Pipe Band & the May Hughes School of Dance, exhibitions of Milking, Vintage tractors, & Hawking involving some lucky spectators, complemented activities in the Main Ring & over by the dam the Drystane Dykers demonstrated the skills necessary to build the perfect wall. The show had great support again this year from a huge team of volunteers, committee members, sponsors, advertisers, judges, stewards, trade stand holders and visitors (human and hairy) who donate their time, effort and money to make the show a success. A huge thanks must be given to the extremely generous sponsors and supporters of this year’s show; we had a record amount of sponsorship for which we are very grateful. Dorrian is Champion of Champions The junior club champions of the Renfrewshire Golf Union were again in action at Paisley Golf Club with the semi finals producing good quality matches despite the conditions. In the first match, Paul Dorrian from Greenock Golf Club was all square after fourteen holes in his battle with Fereneze’s Lewis Breslin. However, Lewis missed the green at the par three fifteenth and could not get down in two. Paul then birdied the sixteenth and a half at seventeen saw him through to the final. Many thought when he was four down in the quarter final that he was on his way out but he proved them wrong. In the second s e m i final, sixteen year old J a c k Crawford from Mearns Castle could not compete with a series of solid pars from Calum Elliot after the turn and the Whitecraigs champion made it to the final with a six and four victory. It was Bob Hope who coined the “four seasons in one day” phrase and this was an accurate description of the conditions which faced the finalists as they fought it out to be the Greenlaw Garage Junior Champion of Champions. There was sunshine, then rain, then sleet and a hint of snow accompanied by a fierce wind. Despite those factors, at the turn, both players were level par and all square – a great display of golf from the youngsters. At the very tough tenth, Paul got his par four which put him one up and a soaring six iron to fifteen feet at the thirteenth hole doubled that lead. Calum had a chance to pull one back at the fifteenth but three putts resulted in a half. Paul closed the match off with a great up and down at the sixteenth for a three and two victory.

Fed up with doom and gloom? Would you really like more fun and laughter? Why not join a line dancing club and learn a skill that keeps you mentally and physically fit without getting bored? Yes, line dancing is a learned skill some people think they can just get up and do it, but discover that it’s not quite as easy as that and others say I’d love to be able to do that, where some believe they have 3 left feet. Well EVERYONE can line dance!
Neil Scott, was awarded the Scottish Volunteer Coach of the Year by the Scottish Archery Association, and he is seen here receiving his award from his fellow team players.

Sugar has become one of the most demonised foods these days, with many health organisations blaming it for the rapid increase in obesity. While the current recommendations suggest we eat no more than 12 teaspoons of sugar a day, the World Health Organisation are looking to drive this down to no more than 6 teaspoons per day.
www.linwoodkarate.co.uk
As a nation we are consuming approximately 1 million tonnes of sugar a year, this is roughly 15 teaspoons of sugar per day per person! 1 gram of sugar contains 4 calories, and a teaspoon is approximately 4 grams. Therefore on average we are consuming 240 calories per day from sugar alone. Sugar provides a lot of energy and if it is not burnt off by the body quickly, it is turned into fatty acids by the liver and stored as fat. So if you consume more than you should and don’t burn it off – it can make you fat fairly quickly. It is estimated that 6 teaspoons of sugar extra every day that is not burnt off, could potentially lead to as much as 4.5 kg of excess fat per year.

I decided to put it to the test to see how much sugar can influence body weight. Luckily for me a family member has volunteered. I will not mention names or which family member it is, but lets’ just say they consume a fair amount of extra sugar. I looked at how to easily reduce their sugar intake, and targeted one of the most common drinks that many people add sugar too. My volunteer adds 2tsps of sugar to every cup of tea and coffee they have per day. (I think they are actually just fed up with me nagging them that they said they would participate in this experiment!). On average they can have around 6 cups of tea or coffee a day, so this equates to approximately 200 calories a day coming from this extra sugar. 1400 calories a week! So my challenge to them was to cut it ALL out. I decided to not even let them half the intake, I have said have none! We have taken a starting bodyweight and we will reweigh in 2 weeks then 4 weeks to see the results! So far while writing this blog they have lasted 3 days and still going strong! I will keep you updated next month on the results so far!

Sailing’s Olympic Double Gold Medallist... ....Launches…..the ‘Discovery’ Wheelyboat! Sailing’s Olympic Double Gold Medallist, Dundee-born Shirley Robertson, caused a splash at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park’s Castle Semple Centre on Saturday 16 May 2015 when she launched Scotland’s first “Wheelyboat V20” for disabled sailors. The Wheelyboat V20 is a 20 foot long roll-on roll-off powered boat, specially designed for wheelchair users. Purpose-built to carry four wheelchair clients, it will provide the first opportunity for so many wheelchair users to access the stunning facilities of one of Scotland’s premier sail training lochs at the same time. The key to the boat’s success is in the custom-made water-tight bow door that lowers to form a ramp. This means that even those with the most complex needs can get in, and get out on the water. Shirley Robertson says she’s passionate to create opportunities for everyone to get on the water. “This launch is about so much more than just a boat for wheelchair users. With this wonderful initiative - to add to the accessible sailing dinghies already here – this brilliant new Wheelyboat will be providing lots of ‘Discovery’ experiences for all those with additional support needs who will now be able to access the water in greater numbers.” The project has been a joint venture
54-57 SPORTS_249_JUNE15.ind.indd 56
between Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park (CMRP), The Gryfe Valley Rotary and The Wheelyboat Trust who raised the money to buy the vessel. Cllr Chris Gilmour Chair of Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority said, “Thanks to the partnership working of Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park Staff, Gryfe Valley Rotary Club, The WheelyBoat Trust and their Sponsors, we are able to add to the Accessible Sport facilities provided at Castle Semple. Now up to four wheelchair users will have the exhilarating opportunity to get out onto the water and experience the challenges and benefits of boating on this fantastic loch. Not only that, this guarantees their access to the water for years to come!” Andy Beadsley, Director WheelyBoat Trust said “I’m delighted to see this Coulam Wheelyboat V20, powered by 90 hp Suzuki engine the first of its type in Scotland and only the second one in the UK to be launched, take to the water at Castle Semple. The facilities and the staff here are really fantastic and this boat will perfectly suit this place and augment all the accessible equipment already available at Castle Semple giving even more people the opportunity to get on the water.” Angus Matheson, President, Gryffe Valley Rotary said ”This has been the largest project Gryffe Valley Rotary have undertaken to date, we’d like to thank all the Rotarians and sponsors that have worked hard to raise the funds. We are delighted to present it to Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority, the staff at Castle Semple do an outstanding job, making outdoor activities accessible to all and I know they already have lots of groups lined up to use it. It has been fantastic to have Shirley Ann Robertson OBE here to official launch this stunning boat, those that took to the water certainly had an exhilarating time.”

Castle Semple Sailing Club Sunday 26 April - Cucina Minucci Cup Well the wind certainly couldn’t make up its mind for this - it was described by one seasoned sailor as “mental”. I do not actually recall hearing anyone say they enjoyed their sail, I think it was more question of survival. A total of 14 boats took part during the day. It wasn’t long into the first race i.e. before buoy 2 that trouble struck - 3 boats over - plus the N12 having a close encounter and ending up somewhat low in the water necessitating an extended picnic stopover to empty the boat, which I understand also happened to the Enterprise later on in the day. By Race 2 - two boats did not take part, Ross McGlennon had a lot of trouble with his laser and had dropped out of the first race. At lunch Ross Wilson decided he was wet enough inside his dry suit and Iain Hardy was quickly brought in as a replacement but it wasn’t long before he too was swimming with Jon Hasler. Only the Vortex was brave enough to risk a asymmetric. No spinnakers were seen. The 3 races after lunch were 1 lap each and more capsizes followed, with several retirements. Leo and Tom had a busy time in the safety boat. By the end of the afternoon everyone had been in the water (or very close to it) even those people not normally known for their exploration of the bottom of the loch. No doubt the Pedal the Park spectators enjoyed watching the entertainment. However, the winners were: 1st Angus Winchester - Vortex. 2nd Arthur Logan and crew - GP14. 3rd Brian Young and Alan Falconer RS Vision. Many thanks to everyone who came along today, to Tom and Leo in the safety boat, Jim and Jan and Jan for Race officer duties and all those who supplied food and helped in the kitchen. Kidston Kids Fun Day Out! On Saturday 25 April, twenty three families enjoyed a great day out to the Sea Life Centre in Balloch. This was the final outing to celebrate all the good times we had at Kidston Kids over the years. The sun shone, the children were very excited and in good voice. Fiona and staff would like to thank Committee past and present for all their hard work keeping the show on the road. We are all very sad to say goodbye to our little friends who helped make each day so special. Thank you for all the kind messages of support, cards and very generous gifts. It has been such a pleasure and a huge privilege to have been surrogate mummy to so many. Although the “Wheels on the Bus” have gone round for the very last time, we wish all our children a bright and happy future! With much love, Fiona, Sarah, Gail and Samantha.

Our children in nursery are learning all about farm animals this month. Rising 5’s and baby room were very lucky to be visited by a baby lamb called Simba in which they were given the opportunity meet him and some even manage to bottle feed him. Some of the children also enjoyed a walk through the woods where they saw a local farmer in his tractor going about his daily tasks in the nearby field. In preparation to Rising 5’s and Tweenie Room’s summer trip to Wellsfield farm, Rising 5’s have changed their imaginative area into a farm shop where they are planting potatoes and selling eggs and milk to their friends and riding in the tractor which the made. Tweenies are getting into the spirit of their trip by dressing up as their favourite farm animals and turning their home corner into a farm house where they are having lots of fun. This month the children in the Baby and Tweenie Room will be learning about minibeasts whilst exploring the surrounding woodland searching for a wide variety, Tweenies will documenting their finds to develop a greater understanding of their environment before they move onto learning about life cycles such as, butterflies. The Out of School Care have been busy planting strawberries, potatoes and poppies all of which are growing well and the children are looking forward to sampling them. Now the weather has been improving everyone is enjoying the outdoor facilities where they are having lots of fun with their new resources. The children are learning more about healthy lifestyles and looking into the importance of handwashing, toothbrushing, diet and exercise. The Holiday Club is running from 29th June until 12th August in which there will be a host of activities planned for their Summer Programme therefore, please book your places as soon as possible to avoid disappointment as places are limited.
Langbank Playgroup
At Langbank Playgroup we are discovering the joys of making our own playdough each session and it’s a real lesson in early maths, science and language - just one extra measure of water and you could be in a sticky mess! This week’s mix was described as “disgusting” at one point but some extra flour saved the day and it was fine in the end. Our remote control vehicles are also popular and encourage lots of lovely turn-taking and negotiation amongst the children. It will very soon be the summer holidays and we’d like to wish all our pre-school children the very best of luck at school and thank all their families for wonderful support this year. We will miss you all but look forward to hearing how you are doing - Playgroup will be quiet without you!

Kilmacolm Primary School “The Cool Corner” -The official opening of our outdoor classroom took place on Tuesday 31 March and it has already been used for exciting learning opportunities. A huge thank you to the Parent Council who have worked tirelessly to fundraise for this. “It’s really great and fun to use!”, said Alix and Ava, P3. Millie’s Tapestry - In November of last year, P7 did a project on renewable and non-renewable energy. Millie made a blanket showing all the different types of energy we use, and how they help us today. Her blanket was entered into and ECO competition and it won! Her art work was displayed at an ECO fair in Lochwinnoch. “Skipathon” - This year, our annual sponsored event will be a whole school ‘Skipathon’! Children will be given skipping training in the morning with the whole school taking part in the ‘Skipathon’ in the afternoon. Every child will be given skipping ropes to take home at the end of the day. The money raised will contribute, amongst other things, to subsidising class trips.
Summer School June 30th - August 6th

Houston Primary School Nursery! Forest Education Programme - This term the pupils will be going out to explore the local woodland environment as part of the Nursery’s Forest Education Programme led by Senior Nursery Officer, Mrs Lesley Laird. iPads - Our iPads have finally arrived, much to the delight of our pupils. The P7 Techno Team have been working in the nursery teaching the children how to play games on the iPads to enhance their learning of shape, number, rhyme and animals. Moving On - It is nearing time to say goodbye to a number of pupils, who are moving on to primary school in August. P6 pupils who are Nursery Ambassadors at present, who will be P1 Play Leaders have visited several times to play with the children at nursery and supported a number of events. The new entrants will also have the opportunity to join P1 for Purposeful Play, playground games and P.E. Sessions at the school before the end of June. Fun Days - We have a number of fun days planned before the end of session. Firstly a family night disco at Houston Bowling Club, a trip to Erskine Library to meet Bookbug, a visit to Gryffe High School Music Dept, Sports Day, Graduation and a fabulous day out to Blair Drummond Safari Park. Phew!!! Fundraising - We have been very busy fundraising for worthwhile causes. We supported Red Nose Day and raised £820. We also supported Lots of Socks Day to raise awareness and to support those who have Downs Syndrome and raised an amazing £488. Thank you to all the kind and giving friends and families who so generously donated. All of the staff at Houston Primary School Nursery would like to thank all those who have supported our nursery and pupils in so many different ways this session, especially our devoted team of parents and visiting specialists.
Jiggy Wrigglers fun in Howwood The children (and adults) at Howwood Baby and Toddler Group have been having a great time dancing and wriggling over the past 8 weeks at our special Jiggy Wrigglers sessions. We are delighted that Iona is coming back for another 5 weeks starting on Friday 29th May and running every Friday 10am to 12noon until 26th June at Howwood Parish Church Hall. The sessions are open to everyone, there is no charge (though donations are most welcome) and we provide drinks and snacks for the adults and children. Don’t forget our regular Monday group runs throughout the school holidays.

Bridge of Weir Primary School Pupils and staff alike took great delight in thanking a very special member of our school family at a recent assembly. Anne Matthews does a huge amount for the school over and above her classroom assistant duties. She runs our gardening club and gives an enormous amount of her own time to ensure our school grounds, gardens and planters always look their best. On receiving her special plaque, in recognition of the fantastic contribution she makes to the life of the school, Anne was heard to say, “It’s a bit like a BAFTA for gardening!” Mrs Kent has “cooked up” some special activities for P4 pupils this term (the kind where they think they’re having lots of fun, when actually it’s been a non-stop combo of maths, science, health & wellbeing, literacy and…well, you get the picture), with a different group of pupils preparing snacks for their classmates each week. Children shopped for ingredients before donning aprons to prepare such tasty offerings as pinwheel hummus and lettuce wraps, cream cheese and cucumber sandwiches, and fruit kebabs to share with their friends. Not only have these sessions been very popular, but also they shown the children just how easy it is to prepare simple and nutritious food. Several children have remarked that it’s just like Masterchef! We are very grateful to Ms Burry and Mrs Peters, who have helped each Wednesday, and to the many parents who have chaperoned the Tuesday shopping trips. Following the success of the Parent Council-funded trip to the Royal Concert Hall for P4-7, it is now our younger pupils’ turn. P3 saw an outstanding production of “Danny Champion of the World” at the Beacon Arts Centre in Greenock. At the time of writing P1 is heading off to the Scottish Mask and Puppet Centre in Glasgow to take part in a hands-on workshop, while P2 is eagerly anticipating a visit to the Paisley Arts Centre to see “The Edibles”, a highly acclaimed play by the Grinagog Theatre Company. We hope to see you all at our Mayfair, on Saturday, 30th May, 10am-12noon.

Howwood Primary School Residential Trip P7 had a fantastic time when they went on their recent residential school trip to the Scottish Outdoor Education Centre Dounans, Aberfoyle. The residential programme supports schools by providing an intensive experience over 5 days. Through a combination of high and low ropes, tasks and challenges, and trust and confidence games, children are encouraged to become more independent and raise their awareness of other people. This experience gives them the confidence to take change in their stride and carry their new skills into the classroom. SOEC’s environmental programmes enable children to experience the joys of the natural world through environmental challenges and structured play. At SOEC they aim to foster an awareness of, and empathy with, nature. Through immersion in the outdoors, pupils gain an increased understanding of natural cycles, ecosystems and biodiversity. These elements of eco-literacy, already introduced in the classroom, are enhanced by life real experiences. Pupils come away with a sense that Scotland’s natural environment is enjoyable, accessible and relevant to them. Both children and staff were treated to an action packed programme of activities including off-site activities such as hill climbing and on-site activities such as rope challenges, Tree climbing, Pole Climbing, Archery, Raft Building, Exploration, Orienteering, Problem Solving games & Living Outdoor Skills. A truly memorable experience was had by all and one which the children will remember for years to come.
Kilbarchan Community Nursery On 15th May, we held our Annual Eco schools day of action, Fruity Friday. The children all wore yellow and took part in a range of activities to promote healthy living. They enjoyed a mini sports day with an obstacle course, basketball and races, then were all presented with a medal to take home. This event is organised in conjunction with World Cancer research Fund to help raise funds for the charity. On 10th May families from the Nursery took part in a treasure trail round Kilbarchan where the clues lead to a password which unlocked the treasure chest full of gold and silver coins. Congratulations to the winning family, the Armstrongs who received vouchers for Pandemonium Soft Play in Erskine. All the pre-school children who are starting school at Kilbarchan Primary in August have now been partnered with a buddy from P6. The buddies have visited the nursery and also shared a playtime session with the nursery children to give them a helping hand in the playground.

St Columba Playgroup and Toddlers Many thanks to Andy of STARK IMAGES for coming along again and taking our annual group photo this year - don’t we look smart? Playgroup is great fun and offers a whole host of learning and play opportunities as well as the chance to develop social and friendship skills, plus is a vital meeting point for parents and carers. This term we are delighted to welcome back Jo James for a few Musicland sessions and also will be meeting with our colleagues in Early Years from the Kilmacolm nurseries which the Playgroup children may go on to. We will also fit in Sports Day plus take handprints for our wonderful souvenir tea-towel and enjoy an outdoor trip. Don’t forget our Open Days on Monday 1 and Tuesday 2 June if you are interested in a space from August 2015; children from 2yrs 4mths welcome for any combination of Monday, Tuesday or Thursday mornings. Houston Primary pupils get cooking at Gryffe The Health, Food and Technology Department welcomed sixty-six P6 and ninety P7 pupils from Houston Primary. The pupils, assisted by their teachers and helpers walked to the school in groups of twenty and eagerly participated in making a healthy snack for themselves as part of their Health Week Programme.
Houston P7 School Dance Following last year’s success, the P7s will again be starting their Leavers Dance on Tuesday 23rd June at the River Inn where they will receive a complimentary refreshment, kindly supplied by Jason Andrews and his staff, and have the opportunity for photos before leaving to be piped to Houston Primary School at 6.15pm. Last year, the well wishers who lined the route as the children paraded from the River Inn to the School really added to the sense of occasion. It would be great to see the same support this year.

Duchal Nursery School We are delighted to announce the grand opening of our wonderful re-furbished garden!!! Thanks to the work of the parent cooperative for the idea and fundraising, we are now proud owners of an outdoor space that will not get muddy and slippery during the adverse West of Scotland weather. With special artificial play grass we will be able to enjoy the fresh air and our outdoor learning area all year round!!! Duchal Nursery is now on Facebook – look us up to find out more a b o u t what goes on at our fabulous nursery at Birkmyre Park. June is a wonderful month in the nursery calendar and definitely one of the busiest. Our Rising 2’s joined the Busy Bumblebees for a spring trip to Lamont Farm and thoroughly enjoyed meeting the wonderful variety of animals from baby lambs to terrapins. The Grasshopper playroom also visited the Farm a few weeks beforehand and the nursery made a donation to pay for hay and feed for the animals as a thank you for this memorable experience. Children leaving for school this year have started their visits as part of their induction and are enjoying comparing playgrounds, classrooms and uniforms. This will be followed up by teacher visits to the nursery to meet the children in a familiar environment over the coming weeks and Houston Primary are hosting a Treasure Hunt which is sure to be good fun. Our Graduation this year on 11th June will take place at Houston Primary as we have so many children leaving and want all parents and family members to have the opportunity to come along and celebrate this event. We hope that the good weather returns for our annual BBQ this year with Movie Characters the theme and lots of fun activities for everyone to enjoy as well as our parents egg and spoon races which are always hilarious. Abbey continues to support the local community events with the children entering competitions at the Houston & Killearn Festival as well creating a colourful and imaginative Seaside collage for the Agricultural show. Blair Drummond is the children’s choice again this year for the summer trip for the older children on 18th June whilst there is lots of outdoor play planned for the younger children each day.

Gryffe High Awards Ceremony
Houston Primary School
The Awards Ceremony was brought forward this year to allow more of the S6 pupils to attend. Mr Raymond Kane who is a Development Officer in Skills for Learning, Life and Work with Renfrewshire Council was the Principal Guest. After introduction to the top table by Mr Scott Taylor, Rev Donald Campbell opened the ceremony with a prayer.
There was a warm ‘bienvenue’ and ‘bienvenida’ for our Continental cousins on May 9 when Houston Primary held a special Languages Day.
Mr Johnson warmly congratulated all of the pupils of Gryffe High and in particular those pupils who had achieved an award. Mr Kane gave an interesting and entertaining address before presenting more than 400 awards and prizes. Mrs Skillen had the task of ensuring that the Certificates, cups and trophies were all in perfect sequence allowing the smooth and swift running of the Presentations. Prizes included Certificates of Excellence and Merit, Mathematical awards, Young Enterprise and House Token Awards. These were followed by some really impressive achievement in a whole range of sports including almost 20 Scottish Internationalists and even an Internationalist at Great Britain level. Around 25 pupils received Special Category prizes. These highly acclaimed awards merit a range of fabulous silverware and glassware. These include academic excellence in particular subjects as well as outstanding endeavour in various categories. Many of these prizes are sponsored by local companies including the Gryffe Valley Rotary Club who are always represented at the Awards Ceremony and provide support in various ways to pupils. In keeping with Gryffe tradition, the Head Boy, Tom Lightbody and Head Girl, Gwen Gillham gave the Vote of Thanks. Tom and Gwen achieved a good balance of humour and genuine appreciation for their years in Gryffe. A night filled with great memories. Our congratulations go to the award winners but always with a reminder that they are representatives of ALL of the pupils at Gryffe High who ALL deserve our congratulations in recognition of their hard work and achievements.
P 1-3 experienced French culture while P4-7 learned about Spanish life during the day-long extravaganza. Staff, led by Principal Teacher Louise Dunn, organised five fun-packed sessions showcasing food, music, art, dancing and each nation’s impact around the world. Parents who had lived abroad shared their stories and Modern Languages staff from Gryffe High joined the fun as pupils tried out everything from croissants and artwork inspired by Rousseau and Picasso to Flamenco dancing! Live Long and Prosper could have been the motto in Houston Primary during Health Week (May 11-15) as a carnival of activities helped pupils stay fit in mind and body. Experts led sessions in sports including curling, rugby, zumba and football, pupils experienced healthy food during soup and smoothie-making sessions, and PC Kirsty Boyd advised pupils how to protect themselves in a range of situations, including Stranger Danger and internet safety. The highlight of the week was Sports Day. PE specialist Dave Milligan put on a rotation of fantastic activities and the children gave their all in class and individual races. Thanks to the parents who gave their time to lead sessions during the week and help at Sports Day. A huge well done to P5s Sally Campbell and Kirsty Langan, who helped St Mirren Basketball team head for the National Championships after winning the Under10s Regional Development League. Talented Sally has even been chosen to play for Scotland! “It’s been hard work but I really enjoy it,” she said.
Bridge of Weir Nursery children visit Gryffe Science Department
Congratulations also go to our P7 Netball team, who left empty-handed but filled with pride on May 12 after taking 2nd place in the top league of the Scottish Nationals. The girls won every game in their round-robin stage before being defeated in their final.
On Tuesday 5th May, the science department were delighted to welcome almost 80 young children from Bridge of Weir nursery. Each session was divided between 2 science labs and each child was given a pair of protective glasses to wear. The children were asked to listen carefully and they were given some basic safety information.
Our P7s have returned exhausted but exhilarated after their week-long activity holiday at Loch Insh outdoor centre near Aviemore. Teamwork and social skills were tested during activities including raft building, kayaking, orienteering and archery from May 18-22.
Firstly, the children were shown what to do with plastic rods, balloons and confetti to provide a fun introduction to Electrostatics. This literally made their hair stand on end! To emphasise that science is often a study of everyday life, the next experiment involved testing several everyday drinks using ‘special dye’ (actually Universal Indicator). This gave the pupils the opportunity to use test tubes and they were then absolutely delighted to see an array of colour once they had finished their experiment. This was then linked to the effects of acid on their teeth and health, as most of the drinks tested were acidic apart from milk and still water. The children then got a wee rest to watch a favourite demonstration of ‘Elephants Toothpaste’. This involves a fairly spectacular chemical reaction which produces a large ‘tube’ of foam. The final experiment involved watching flames change colour with different chemicals and ‘spark’ like fireworks. The young visitors seemed to thoroughly enjoy their first taste of science. Our thanks go to the nursery teachers, carers and helpers who brought the children and looked after them during their visit. A very special word of thanks to our Science Technician Mrs Moira Stark who spent a great deal of time preparing the equipment for the visits and also helped clear everything up afterwards!

Kilbarchan East Church Tots Club Kilbarchan East Church Tots’ Club finishes with a summer party on Monday 22nd June at 9.45am in the hall. It has been a very successful year with an average of 40 children and their accompanying adults each Monday morning. We shall resume at the end of August.
Young artists helped raise an amazing £500-plus for school funds at the end of March when they created wonderful works for our Art Exhibition. The gym hall look like a real gallery after their pieces were professionally mounted and framed before being snapped up by delighted parents. We were bursting with pride after pupils Kirsten and Carla Dinnie with Jessica and Emily Fallon raised around £1000 for Cancer Research UK. The girls organised a disco in the Carrick Centre on March 28 then were sponsored to take part in the Race for Life 5K in Glasgow on May 10. “Thanks to everyone who has donated,” said Jessica.

Scottish Schools Championships
Prep have been talking all about People Who Help Us and enjoyed dressing up and talking about emergency vehicles. We had a visit from our Community Police Officer this morning who let us try on his uniform and hat - we even spoke to the control room on his walkie talkie! Visit our Facebook page for regular updates at St Columba’s School Early Years.
Congratulations to the eleven pupils who represented St Columba’s in the first Scottish Schools Aquathlon Championships. The event took place on Tuesday 28th April at the Dollan Aqua Centre in East Kilbride with 250 school pupils from 47 schools across the country taking part in the aquathlon. Competitors raced over a variety of distances depending on their age group. Conditions were tough and the run section gruelling, with a leg sapping climb to the end of each kilometre circuit. All pupils produced excellent performances, with Iona Miller and Josh Hendry finishing 2nd and 3rd respectively in their individual events and Katrina Miller, Hamish Loudon, Iona Miller and Josh Hendry winning Bronze in the Mixed Team Relay. Well done to all. Early Years Learning We are delighted to receive so many positive comments about our new Early Years offering which will begin in August 2015. We are happy to arrange a taster visit at any point throughout the academic year so you and your child can experience what St Columba’s has to offer. For more information visit earlyyears.st-columbas.org or contact Mrs Gillian Mercer on 01505 872768.
