rrrrrrrrrrr, it’s suddenly got cold and wet! Well, we do live in Scotland after all - the land of four seasons in one day. The sudden rain after months of relatively dry weather caused some slippery conditions and on the A761 between the Knapps and the Quarriers road end we saw two bad accidents in one weekend, with cars skidding off the road into the field. Please take care out there, and remember that conditions can catch out even the most careful drivers.
The rain and frost causes difficult road conditions. Please report road faults ASAP; you will save others a great deal of grief and might even save a life. You can report a road fault or pothole by phone or online. We prepare again for Christmas and look forward to the regular event which is the Gibb Stuart’s (Home Hardware) windows. Every year without fail, Sandy and his team go to great efforts to create a colourful and dynamic display - a visual extravaganza to brighten up the dark winter evenings. For those with hectic schedules and unable to make the shops during normal hours, Gibb Stuart is staying open on Thursday evenings in the run up to Christmas. The shop will be open until 8pm on Thursdays 20th and 27th November, 4th and 11th December, with special offers in-store on those nights. Last chance to get tickets for the local pantos. “Oh no it’s not” you say, “Oh yes it is!” And we are so excited at The Advertizer this year as, once again, one of our very own team is taking part in ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’ - we’ll leave it to our eagle-eyed readers out there to go along to the show and find out who! “The BIG Dinner” Charity aims to hold largest ever online dinner party A Scottish charity set up by quadruple amputee, Olivia Giles, is inviting people to sit down to dinner on 7th March 2015, so that people in Africa can walk. Olivia’s charity 500 miles which supports amputees and others with mobility difficulties in Sub-Saharan Africa, is organising the BIG dinner – a one off event involving hundreds of separate dinners across the UK and the rest of the world - all of which will be linked by social media and a web streamed celebrity BIG dinner. Hosted by Fred MacAulay, the programme will feature a host of stars, some of whom will be available to bid for in a live, online dinner date auction. Launching the event with the BIG dinner’s resident chef, Nick Nairn, Olivia said: “The NHS provided my prosthetics for free and they have given me a second chance at life but people in many parts of Africa are not so fortunate. Even though an average artificial limb or limb support costs as little as £175, many people will unnecessarily spend their lives in a wheelchair or worse, on the ground. By hosting or attending a dinner for the BIG dinner on 7th March, people will be helping to transform lives forever. “We hope that hosts will be creative about the dinner they organise but it doesn’t matter what they do as long as fun is the main ingredient. They can throw a ritzy dinner party or treat their friends to a takeaway curry, we don’t mind, we just want people to get involved. “We hope to raise £500,000 from the event. I realise that’s a lot of dinners but most people enjoy dinner with friends and family anyway and March 7th next year offers the chance to be part of this unique event, while offering lifechanging help to people who are fighting to maintain their independence and make a fresh start.” Nick Nairn said: “This is a brilliant project, mainly for the difference the money raised will make but also in encouraging people to cook for others. UP, UP and AWAY.... Glasgow airport has announced several new routes for summer 2015. Some of which are:- The Canadian airline, Westjet will fly daily direct to Halifax in Nova Scotia using a Boeing 737-700 aircraft with only 136 seats on board. The service will commence on 30th May with flight number of WS30 to commemorate St Andrew’s day and will continue until 24th October 2015. This service opens up great possibilties to explore the East Coast of Canada and in particular the UNESCO heritage charming coastal town of Lunenburg, established in 1753, which is famous for its wooden architecture and beautiful location. Another new long haul route will be from Thomas Cook airlines DIRECT to Las Vegas weekly. I am sure this will not be a quiet flight!! Jet2 airlines and holidays continues its growth in 2015 and will include Antalya (Turkey), Larnaca (Cyprus), Malta and the city of Prague from Glasgow. Easyjet is now flying to the colourful and exotic city of Marrakech in Morocco, the Greek island of Kos, and Split in Croatia. I musn’t forget the airline we all love to hate... Ryanair, who are commencing flights from Glasgow International airport in 2015. East Renfrewshire-based community choir, Sounds International, has been singing to raise funds for Quarriers in the run-up to Christmas for several years. This year, instead of taking part in the annual Princes Square fundraiser in Glasgow, the choir is staging a full evening of music in a Christmas Concert. Tickets cost £5 (from Quarriers and at the door on the night) for what promises to be a very special night with Sounds International singers and appearances by 17-year-old jazz saxophonist Richard Scholfield. There will also be a raffle and all proceeds from the event will go to Quarriers.

The 4th August 2014 marked the 100th anniversary of the day Britain entered one of the costliest conflicts in history – the First World War – with fighting continuing until the 11th of November 1918, Armistice Day. The Royal British Legion was founded by veterans of the First World War who adopted the poppy as their symbol of Remembrance and hope. Today the Legion is at the forefront of Centenary commemorations. As we come together in Remembrance of events a century ago, we are reminded of the important welfare work the Legion continues to provide today and will need to provide in the future.

Jillian Craig’s Gap Year in Cambodia with Project Trust Next August I will be embarking on a journey that will change my life. I am fortunate to have been selected by Project Trust to work in a 12-month social care project. My most likely destination is Cambodia, but could possibly be Malaysia or Thailand. Project Trust is the longest-established organiser of gap year projects in Africa, Asia and the Americas, providing volunteer placements for up to 300 school leavers aged 17-19 each year. Project Trust is a highly-regarded Scottish registered charity based on the Isle of Coll. To be selected I had to attend a selection course on Coll for four days. The course included teambuilding exercises, planning and presenting two presentations and tasks involving helping the community. The volunteering work I will do will include teaching English to orphaned children, planning arts and crafts activities and helping them with their daily routines. I am also planning to start a local choir. Rural poverty affects a large percentage of the population in Cambodia and this results in limited educational opportunities. While my work will contribute something valuable to these under-privileged children’s lives, I anticipate that the experience will be lifechanging for me too. As a contribution towards the cost of running the projects, Project Trust requires every volunteer to raise £5,900. While I see this as quite a challenge, I am determined to rise to it and know that it will be a valuable learning experience. I have recently set up a virgin money giving account in which people can donate money to support me towards my goal of £5900. Stand Up To Cancer Photos taken at the Greenock Cancer Research shop for the Stand Up To Cancer campaign. Westminster MP Iain McKenzie came along to show support for this local charity and stayed to talk to some of the families and the children. The children also loved posing with the princesses and there were whoops of delight from the kids. Tommy the town clown also turned up.
Alzheimer’s Memory walk Greenock
Greenock was the place to be in September for the Alzheimer’s Scotland fun walk/ memory walk. Lots of people participated in this walk from Greenock’s esplanade to the Battery Park. The Clydeside Singers also came along and sang a variety of songs, and were there again to sing the winners in. Greenock’s councillor Vaughan Jones came along and participated, and said that she took a keen interest in this charity. Vaughan can be found in image two. Everyone celebrated at the end with a cheer.
Paisley and Gryffe Transport Forum Residents will be aware that in November 2013, McGill’s withdrew their X7A bus service serving the whole of the core of the village and “upper” Bridge of Weir. The SPT (government subsidised) replacement was totally unsatisfactory, and later, in the wake of public protest, they modified this to the service which now exists. This also is unsatisfactory, but represents the best they felt they could do to cater for all areas which suffered from the cuts. We, along with Renfrewshire Council, are currently reasoning with them to get this situation improved. Residents should recognise that the present X7A service, although still operated by McGill’s buses is, as is the X6A evening and weekend service, a SPT directed and subsidised service.

It is a fact that throughout the last few years, daytime patronage of McGill’s unsubsidised service to upper Bridge of Weir was extremely poor, and those of us who cared, took every opportunity to preach the need for residents to leave their cars behind whenever possible, and “catch the bus” instead - a sure case of an impending “use it or lose it” scenario. Well, in the main, they didn’t use it, and now in the new service, the capability of practicable return shopping trips to the village, and to the popular destinations of Braehead and Glasgow has been lost, much to the chagrin of the few that did use it. Nevertheless, we feel that with a properly organised revision of the whole approach to bus services in the area, there is a strong case for it to be restored in a way which would be acceptable to both potential bus users and people who MUST use their cars. We are working on this.

The sad fact is that McGill’s have appeared to have lost little and gained much from the withdrawal of this service, because most of the rush-hour commuters who used to use this service, now use McGill’s remaining X7 service, driving their cars down to the village car park, leaving them there all day (thereby preventing local shoppers from making use of that facility), or parking all day in Houston Road adding to the congestion there, and now even driving to Linwood to park there, again adding to the congestion in the streets and car parks of that town. In the latter case, they have the advantage of being eligible for McGill’s cheaper “Zone Card” fares. One might say “Can you blame them?”, but it certainly does not help the case for providing for the young people, the elderly and the infirm who might otherwise benefit from the use of a non rush-hour all-day bus service from the core of Bridge of Weir, not to mention affecting the road-related issues of Bridge of Weir and surrounding towns and villages. Thus, without pressure from the authorities, McGill’s have little incentive to restore a realistic X7A service.

Another by-product of this unsatisfactory situation is that the existing X7 peak-time service buses are often overcrowded, and people have been known to have been left behind because buses are full. This is a totally unsatisfactory situation, and we are working on this too, in collaboration with both Renfrewshire Council and the SPT. We will report back when we have something positive to report. ON the road
Here’s what you need to do this winter to reduce the risk of a breakdown and make sure that you are equipped to deal with the conditions. Check your car Antifreeze – check coolant level regularly and, if required, top-up with a mixture of the correct type of antifreeze. Your garage should check concentration to ensure adequate cold temperature protection. Battery – the most common cause of winter breakdowns. A battery more than five years old may struggle in the cold - get it checked and replaced if necessary to avoid the inconvenience of an unplanned failure. Fuel – keep at least a quarter of a tank in case of unexpected delay. Lights – check and clean all lights regularly to make sure you can see and be seen clearly. Carry spare bulbs. Tyres – should have at least 3mm of tread for winter motoring. Consider winter tyres for improved safety. Check pressures at least every fortnight. Windscreen – reduce dazzle from the low sun by keeping the screen clean inside and out. Now is a good time to renew worn wiper blades. Screen wash – use a 50% mix of a good quality screen wash to reduce the chance of freezing in frosty weather. Locks and door seals – stop doors freezing shut with a thin coat of polish or Vaseline on rubber door seals. A squirt of water dispersant (WD-40) in locks will help stop them freezing. Mod Fever comes to Paisley It was a fabulous day and families and kids came in their hundreds to enjoy the fun. The Mod bikes all congregated at the County Square, and left together to go for a ride around the one way system. They all returned to an afternoon of music and fun with many bands playing. Scooters were all colours and sizes.

Our first two concerts of the season have been wonderful: the first with the super-talented Taylor Wilson and her marvellous accompanying piano and cello players transported us by their music to another time and place, and it was very pleasing to be there! The October concert was very popular too with our audience, who know a good jazz quartet when they hear one. The group is called Quattro MacJazz, and they plied us with hot Dixieland jazz and Gospel Songs - and a few surprises in between. They were new to us, but I don`t think they`ll remain strangers for long. So our first two concerts of the season have set the very high standard that we hope to retain through all the concerts still to come. The next will be on Sunday 30th November - the last concert until January. The visiting quartet is called McFall`s Chamber, and they play a very wide range of music “from tango to jazz to rock, to contemporary classical” and making many stops along the way. This ensemble of violin, viola, cello and double bass has been much praised by the music critics: The Times described their performance as “engaging, witty, relaxed, sophisticated, exquisitely played and just plain fun”! So do join us for their first concert for us in Beith Community Centre, Kings Road, Beith KA15 2BQ at 2.30pm on 30th November. Our concerts last about two hours, with an interval of twenty minutes when refreshments are available. Prices are as follows: Adult £11, Concessions £9, Students and children £3 each. There is easy wheelchair access, and guide dogs are welcome. Do please come to see what it`s like: quite apart from the music, it is a welcoming, social afternoon, where you might well meet friends old and new, and there is a warm, easy atmosphere. Speaking To Rotary It’s a Dog’s Life
Heston was undoubtedly the star speaker at recent meetings of Gryffe Valley Rotary. Technically, as Heston is in fact a cross-bred Labrador dog, Danny Gallagher of Canine Partners was the actual speaker as Heston was far too busy demonstrating his range of skills. Danny explained that Canine Partners have “puppy parents” who provide training over a 12 month period in the skills necessary to enable the dog to provide practical assistance with tasks which some people can find difficult, painful or impossible to perform themselves. Tasks include: • Opening and closing doors and cupboards • Retrieving items e.g. picking up a fallen credit card! • Helping someone get dressed/undressed • Pressing buttons and switches e.g. lights, raising the alarm • Loading/unloading washing machines • Etc, etc Any sceptics in the audience were very quickly hugely impressed as Heston effortlessly ran through his repertoire with Danny. The photo shows Heston “tugging” – great for opening doors or pulling someone upright from a chair. It costs around £10K to train up a dog and Canine Partners receives no government funding even though 9 out of 10 people who have a canine partner can have a carer freed up. A truly amazing and hugely worthwhile cause which really can change lives.
“Diabetes - From Ancient Curse to Modern Epidemic”
This was the title of the talk delivered by Professor Martin Maclay, a consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology and a former colleague of member Sai Kumar. Martin started with the first written reference to the condition in 1550 BC, and summarised reports and treatments chronicled over the centuries until 1910 when a lack of insulin was identified as the root cause of diabetes. From that point, the life expectancy of those affected started to increase dramatically and he went on to outline current treatments and ongoing research into a possible cure. Unfortunately, it is now projected that the global numbers suffering from diabetes will increase from 150million in 2000 to 500 million by 2030. The new term in the USA is “diabesity” reflecting the impact of lifestyle and overeating on the incidence of diabetes. It was noted that not all of the delicious puds provided by the River Inn were completed that evening!

Other recent speakers included member Andrew Macleman talking about whisky (based on a lifetime of selfless study and tasting), an update on the activities of Brighter Bridge of Weir from Alice Johnson and Margaret Greenlees, and a further talk from regular contributor Graham McLachlan (this time on how the railways in this country were a powerful driver for technology in the last century). If variety is the spice of life, then Gryffe Valley members have been enjoying a very varied and tasty menu!

BUSINESS news Kilmacolm Camera Club We hit the ground running with an eclectic selection of worldwide images in our first three meetings of the new season. We started with an evening in which members gave us a taste of where they had spent their summers this year – quite a feast of holiday images! We then had a fascinating talk on “Russian Photography” from Shamil Khairov. Shamil took us through a history of photography in Russia, and gave us a really enlightening insight into the history and development of the country itself. Something different and very informative. Our third evening was one of our “20/20” nights where members present a sequence of 20 images and explain the story behind them. We saw a selection of sailing pictures, shots around the world, flowers, not to mention our old friends, the Falkirk Kelpies. Some are shown here, “Beach Huts, Southend” by Janice Stevenson, “Machu Picchu” by Jane Robertson and “Three Yachts” by Bill Ham. All in all, three very entertaining evenings to start the season. iT blog with Colin Fyfe of Colcom BT‘s mail platform has moved across from Yahoo! in what has been the most protracted saga since Y2K. Many customers have been unceremoniously dumped out of their familiar Yahoo! mail page and have been asked to remember a password they have not used for five years to access their mail. Others who remember this – or who correctly guessed ‘london12’, are now presented with an even more squashed environment to compose their mail where adverts want to take centre stage. Anyone accessing their @btinternet mail on their iPhone or using a mail client will need to change their settings. This is easily done but a nuisance none the less. Needless to say that in the last month I have created more Gmail accounts than ever before for my customers. This recent debacle again for me underlines the point that we are all better served as email users from dedicated email providers such as Google or Hotmail rather than using the email address provided to us by our broadband supplier. Change to these is a short term nuisance with slight learning curve that is controlled and in your own time and for me is greatly preferable to the whims of our ISP, where anything goes it seems.

Paisley Colour Photographic Club Competition for the Bowie Trophies
After the summer break Paisley Colour Photographic Club’s syllabus for 20142015 of lectures and competitions is well under way. Held at the McMaster Centre in Renfrew recently, the club’s first competition of the session was for the Bowie Trophies. Entry for this competition consisted of two images, one botanical and one zoological, judged as set by Robert Quigg DAPGB from Kilmaurs. Robert gave very careful consideration to each of over 70 images, pointing out the strengths of each image and also giving suggestions as to how an image could be improved. Robert had researched interesting details about the plants, insects or animals in the images and shared this knowledge with the members. This year the winner of the Ila Bowie Trophy ,awarded to the best non-advanced member, was Alison Smart for her beautiful images “Dandelion Seed Head” and “Waxwing”. In the advanced competition for the Bowie Trophy, Robert explained his great difficulty in choosing a winner between the top sets of images as all were of such high quality. He awarded Third Place to James Black for his images “Teasel Detail” and “Orange Tips and Egg”. Second Place was awarded to Mike Cruise for his images “Foxglove” and “Black Grouse Displaying”. With his second set of stunning images “Dryad’s Saddle Fungus” and “Kingfisher” in first place and the winner of the Bowie Trophy 2014 was Mike Cruise. Mike’s images “Foxglove” and “Kingfisher” were judged to be the top botanical and top zoological images in the competition. Club meetings continue on Thursday evenings in Renfrew with a series of lectures in November featuring images taken in various spectacular locations around the world. Langbank Camera Club This month’s club competition topic was the ‘Commonwealth Games’ which provided a variety of shots from the different sporting events, the Queen’s baton relay and symbols of the games, including ‘Clyde’ the games mascot. The winning entry was awarded to Derrick McPherson for his photograph of the “Women’s 1500m T54” race which was taken during the athletics heats at Hampden Park. The leading two women in the photograph are Jade Jones (Eng) and Diane Roy (Can) who went on to win the bronze and silver medals at the finals a few days later. Gary Ramanathan was runner up with his photograph of Mauritius fighting it out with New Zealand in the boxing ring. David Robb took third spot for his photograph of broadcaster Sheeren Nanjiani with the baton in Erskine. All the photographs submitted for the competition were of a very high standard. Club members were treated to a DVD presentation of the Glasgow and District Photographic Union (GDPU) Projected Image Exhibition 2014, which showcased many excellent and award winning images from this group. Langbank club recently joined the GDPU which should bring benefits to the club and expand our horizons. The GDPU presentation was very apt as the club will be hosting its very own Projected Digital Image (PDI) competition night on the 27th of October. The PDI evenings will concentrate on projected images, including exploring the technology and techniques to produce them, rather than printed photographs, thus challenging the members to look at the ‘bigger picture’ of image making for the 21st century. The November meeting will convene as usual on the second Monday of the month 10th of November with the PDI meeting on 24th November. The competition topic for November 10th is “A Shot at Dawn or Dusk”. PDI competition topics will be announced on the Club’s web site. To end the night Bill Crookston gave us an excellent workshop on image processing; explaining the technology behind the files and a very helpful step by step guide on how to get the best from our images. The quiz night on 15th October was good fun, with questions ranging from basic right through to bamboozle, covering topics including knowing acronyms, classic cameras, photography history (crikey, this one was tough but fascinating!), and using your camera. Coming up in November we have the second round of our league competitions which will be judged externally by the talented Fiona Oldfield, who will be scrutinising our images right down to the pixels, so no pressure! Fiona will present her results to us on 5th, and we nervously look forward to hearing her critique on all of our images. On 12th we have two visiting speakers; James Dunlop to present his take on “Sunday Outings” and Charles Hamilton showing us his “Street Photography”. We are really looking forward to enjoying their images and getting inspiration and tips! On 19th the club presents “Cash in the Carrick”, a bring and buy sale to raise funds for the club. On 26th we compete at home against Queens Park in the GDPU Digital competition where images from both clubs will be judged by Dr Robert Brown; guaranteed electric atmosphere for this one! We still have some places available for new members, and welcome everyone from complete beginners through to experienced level. Somerled and the Battle of Renfrew Conference
Somerled and the Battle of Renfrew Conference, run by Renfrewshire Local History Forum, took place in Renfrew Town Hall on the 4th of October, 2014. This excellent conference commemorated the Battle of Renfrew which took place 850 years ago in 1164. An old poem written in Latin tells how Somerled with a huge fleet of 150 ships sailed up the Clyde, opposed by only a small force of locals. This small force employed the devious and ingenious strategy of setting fire to vegetation to create a moving, smoking barrier which forced the invading enemy to retreat through the water back to their ships. Many were slaughtered before reaching the safety of their ships. The invading force was soundly defeated and Somerled himself was slain in the battle. A highlight of the conference was Alan Steel’s dramatic rendering of this old poem. Derek Alexander, a member of the Forum and Archaeologist for the National Trust of Scotland, very ably chaired the conference. Professor Ted Cowan was the main speaker. Denis Rixson gave a most interesting and informative talk on medieval shipping in the Hebrides and David Caldwell gave an excellent presentation on Somerled and his place in the history of the Isles. Two of our Forum members, Alan Steel and Derek Alexander, gave most informative talks on the battle and its archaeology. An additional item was an excellent performance by a team from the Renfrewshire Youth Music Initiative, led by Morag Currie. The group composed an original piece of music based on 12th century plainchant, rhythms and texts. It was a really professional piece with a terrific Scottish atmosphere rendered by fiddles and harp, and a great battle sequence with riffs, beatbox and, would you believe, a battle horn. This innovative musical item, unusual in a history conference, was extremely well received by the audience. The conference was sponsored by Renfrewshire Council, and received exceptional support from Renfrew Councillor Bill Brown who joined Forum members in a search for the site of the battle field. In all the conference was a huge success - with excellent speakers, the innovative musical item and an audience of one hundred and twenty attendees. It certainly put Renfrew on the map.
Johnstone History Society The Society meets on the second Tuesday of every month in the Masonic Hall Collier Street Johnstone at 7.30pm. Our next meeting will be on 11th November, when the speaker will be Douglas Breingan who will speak about the island of St Kilda. The Johnstone History Museum which is situated in Morrison’s at the Collier Street end is open Wednesday, Friday and Saturday from 10.30am - 4pm and is staffed by volunteers from the History Society. We recently received a grant from the Flight Path Fund to purchase IT equipment for this we are very grateful.

The guest speaker for the evening was Sharon Marklow, Assistant Manager Policy Renfrewshire Council. Sharon informed the meeting of the complex procedures in producing the finalised Renfrewshire Local Development Plan ranging from the start of the process in November 2010 till the adoption in August 2014. She spoke of the Housing sites identified for Bridge of Weir they were Shillingworth, Lawnmarnock Road, Fetlar Road, Maxwell Place and Bracken Place. Reference was made to the former Bull’s Garage site. She informed us that consultants were taking an interest in the site however, no formal proposals have been submitted to Renfrewshire Council. A member of the Public raised the issue that traffic calming measurers were urgently required on the Lintwhite Crescent stretch of road. This matter will be pursued by the Community Council. The Ordinary meeting of the Community Council heard of further problems at the Livery Walk Recycle Centre once again heavy household goods had been dumped in the bins and surrounding area, not for the first time this has occurred. We have heard from Gerard Hannah, Consumer Protection Manager Community Resources, that special uplifts were carried out over the offending weekend and Renfrewshire Council are looking at alternative locations for the siting of the bins to ensure residents are able to use the bins for recycling, meanwhile their supervisors will monitor the location to ensure that it is being used appropriately and any fly tipping material will be removed as quickly as possible. Coming close to Christmas, a date for your Diary, Bridge of Weir Christmas Lights Switch-On is Thursday 4th December - more information to follow. Tickets will go on sale later this month for Bridge of Weir Choral Society’s annual Christmas concert on Sunday 14th December at St Columba Church, Kilmacolm. Under the directorship of their conductor, Christopher Barr, the choir will perform a programme of traditional Christmas music. The concert will consist of choruses from Bach’s Magnificat in D interspersed with a selection of Christmas carols both new and old. Our guests this year will be the Renfrew Burgh band, conductor Mark Good, with an exciting programme of Christmas favourites. There will also be lots of opportunities for the audience to join us in the singing, both with the band and with Mark Browne, our organist for the evening. BoW TARA The latest meeting of Bridge of Weir TARA was a lively affair with a number of local issues discussed and our thanks go to councillors Maria Brown and James McLaren, Drew McNab from Environmental Services and the Police for their attendance. The police report showed nine crimes were committed within the village over the past month. Different types of theft accounted for most of the figures, two from cars, a yard broken into and a trailer stolen and a shoplifting. More worrying is the three housebreakings which have occurred and residents are asked to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious to the police. The Kilmacolm Road is to receive a Driver Feedback Sign on a permanent basis to hopefully help reduce traffic speed. Wheelie bins are still being left out along the Main Street, could residents and businesses please remove them from public areas after they’ve been emptied. The building housing the Co-op is being auctioned off but at present this will not affect anyone’s shopping as the present lease runs till 2024. TARA members, local Councillors and Council officials will in the near future be having a village Walkabout to look at streetlights, pathways, etc. The next meeting of the Association will be on the 18th November in the Pirie Centre at Freeland Church and starts at 7.30pm.

Christmas Art Show
Opens Monday 17th November
It’s a colourful Christmas Show at The Bridge - it’s not only a Post Office, it’s a card shop and it’s a venue for so many activities - this month is no exception! From Monday 17th November, local artists are presenting a Christmas Painting Exhibition in the Bridge Gallery. Alison Bannerman, a well known artist, has once again designed a Christmas card for the village. Last year some people were disappointed because it had sold out so quickly, so get your skates on and avoid disappointment! Alison also has a selection of local scenes and flower paintings, with maybe a few surprises in store. Colourful artist Phyllis Mulligan has a selection of original oils, not all paintings of children, a few scenes along with a range of small prints from only £10. Throughout the year many artists have exhibited in The Bridge Gallery, donating a percentage to support The Bridge and keep it open. All the volunteers are keen to welcome you, you can have a cup of tea or coffee, or just browse, there are shelves of ‘nearly new books’ for only 50p. Why not give an ‘original’ gift this Christmas. Some good patching of Houston Road, by Formakin, has taken place and this is a big improvement. Still time to let me know your wishes. New drains in Langbank seem to be keeping the floods at bay. New traffic calming on Kilmacolm Rd, Bridge of Weir should be in place when you read this. The works will consist of new bollards, countdown markers and beefed up lining. I hope it makes a difference. I am hoping to have the West Ferry car park improved so it is a pleasure to visit. At present it is a disgusting mess. It is intended to apply to Zero Waste Scotland for a grant to help to discourage future fly tipping whilst improving the area for local residents. I attended a site meeting to decide upon a package of measures that will improve the area whilst meeting the criteria of the Fly tipping/Littering Fund available. Other projects I am working on include adopting roads and pavements and building a cycle track from Bridge of Weir to Gryffe High School. kilmacolm & quarriers I attended the annual prize giving at St Stephens High School and Port Glasgow High School at the Port Glasgow Community Campus. It is really quite progressive to have both these fine schools under the one roof. It was sad to hear of the death of Jill Jones the Head Teacher at Kilmacolm Primary School. Jill had been ill for sometime and will be missed by the KPS community and the people of Kilmacolm. She was proud to know that the Dux and Runner up to the Dux at the Port Glasgow High School award ceremony were both ex KPS pupils, Reiss Armstrong and Luthais Arthur respectively. Ex KPS pupils figured prominently at the PGHS prize giving. Final brown bin collections will take place on resident’s regular recycling day during weeks commencing 10th or 17th November. Green waste can still be taken after these dates to our facility at Pottery Street. There will be steps taken to ensure that residents are aware of the change. No better place to hear about it than the Advertizer. Inverclyde Council is one of only nine local authorities to meet the 2013 target performance of 50% household recycling-and in the second quarter of 2014 it has achieved the new 60% recycling target for 2020. As Chair of the Council’s Green Charter Committee for 2 years I am well aware of the effort that has been put in the achieve this superb performance. We have recruited traffic wardens and am aware that they have visited the shops to confirm that they will in particular be enforcing the 30 minute waiting and various yellow lines. I hope they realise that they are dealing with a village and use a doze of common sense. The Christian Aid and Horticultural coffee mornings were well attended; the latter is celebrating its 135th Anniversary with a number of presentations and visits planned throughout the year. Weedkilling throughout the village has been completed and the wrought iron near the Village Bakery has been painted. It is important that the village is shown off to its best, to this end the winter planting by Colourful Kilmacolm looks much better and is managing to conceal the stark greyness of the large planters. I was disappointed that Scottish Water felt it necessary to again disrupt the smooth flow of traffic by doing works in Market Place. I sometimes wonder if they realise the effect on our traders. The Bonfire and Fireworks are on the 1st November at Knapps. Doors open 4.30pm, as there is food available, and the Bonfire is at 6pm with the fireworks at 6.15pm. £3 for adults and £2 for kids. This is our first report for a number of months as we were both heavily involved in the independence referendum campaign. With life now returning to a degree of normality we hope to report monthly in future. As part of the consultation process for the upcoming refurbishment of Kilmacolm Primary School, Council officers recently held two information sessions for parents and carers of pupils at the school. There are three possible options during refurbishment. 1) For staff and pupils to remain onsite; 2) Decanting the entire school to the former St Stephen’s High School building in Port Glasgow; and 3) Decanting primary pupils to the St Stephen’s building and maintaining the nursery class onsite at Kilmacolm Primary in temporary accommodation. The results of the consultation will be reported to the Education & Communities Committee on 4th November for a decision to be made. Sadly the school’s Head Teacher, Jill Jones, will not be here to lead it through this exciting period following her untimely death. Jill was an inspirational and highly respected Head Teacher and a great friend to many. She will be sorely missed by everyone. Our deepest condolences go to her family. Enforcement of the Council’s Decriminalised Parking Scheme has begun across Inverclyde. Parking discs to display your arrival time in a parking bay are only being used in Greenock Town Centre and they can be collected from public offices or businesses in the Town Centre. While a lot of work went into designing the scheme it is impossible to anticipate in advance how motorists will respond to it. Don’t be surprised therefore if changes are made to the scheme in Greenock to ensure that it achieves its objectives of making the town centre work better for businesses and residents. Flooding in the Market Place area in Kilmacolm has been an issue for some time and we were disappointed that the Scottish Government turned down the Council’s bid for funding to address it. We are pleased however that the Council and Kilmacolm Community Council will be working in partnership to try and access funding from the Climate Challenge Fund Ideas Bank Scheme to improve the water course and resolve this problem. The Remembrance Sunday Service in Kilmacolm is on 9th November. Cllr McColgan will have the honour of laying a wreath on behalf of the Council. Kilmacolm Heritage Centre Following the formation of the Village Centre Forum in 2002 comprehensive and extensive village-wide surveys were conducted to identify the community Library and other facility needs which might support the setting up of a New Community Centre. Establishing a Heritage Centre was found to be one of the most popular proposals. With this in mind the Forum undertook discussions with Inverclyde Council and Kilmacolm Civic Trust who both agreed with the Forum that proposals for such a centre should be taken forward recognising the educational, tourist and community benefits which could ensue. For a variety of reasons the project has never been launched despite some initial donations being made towards its set up. Kilmacolm’s twining with Merignies in France; the recent outstanding “Who Do You Think You Are” event in the SECC; and the developing world wide interest in Charles Rennie MacIntosh who had strong links and project involvement in Kilmacolm provide serious encouragement to set up a Kilmacolm Heritage Centre. Of course there are many issues to be resolved, not least the provision of compact and secure space within the village. Overall however I consider there is a wonderful opportunity here, which the Community should grasp with both hands. It could prove to be an outstanding and unique local project. I suggest that Kilmacolm Community Council and Kilmacolm Civic Trust set up a joint working group to take this potentially rewarding task forward to a successful conclusion.

Kilmacolm Friends of Ardgowan Hospice will be holding their coffee morning and Christmas fayre. In addition to the Christmas Fayre, there will be home baking, cards and gift stalls. It was with great sadness that Jill Jones, Head Teacher of Kilmacolm Primary School, passed away on 7th October after a long illness. Jill was a lovely person and a great head teacher. Her service at Greenock’s Westburn Parish Church was led by the Rev Karen Harbison and Jennie Buchan and was a celebration of Jill’s life. Jill will be sorely missed by everyone. From the nursery and school, parent partnership, council, her colleagues and the wider community. Our thoughts are with Jill’s family and friends. Recently I attended both St Stephen’s and Port Glasgow High Schools Awards ceremonies in the new Port Glasgow Community Campus. Both nights were splendid occasions and were a celebration of just how well both schools students are performing. The young people are a great credit to their schools, teachers, families and most of all to themselves. From Monday 24th November there will be no more garden waste collections over the winter. For final garden waste collections for 2014 residents should present their brown bins by 7am on their regular recycling collection day during the week starting the 10th or 17th of November. However, residents will still be able to recycle any garden waste by depositing this at either of the council depots at Pottery Street in Greenock or Kirn Drive in Gourock between 8am - 6pm. Brown bin collections re-commence in march 2015.

In the next few weeks council officers will be presenting councillors with lists of potential financial savings. Sadly due to continuing UK government austerity measures, Scotland’s Block Grant will again be cut even further. In turn this means that although local authorities throughout Scotland will receive a similar percentage of overall funding, i.e. about a third of the annual Scottish budget, it still means that sadly large savings will need to be made. In Inverclyde Council’s case this amounts to just over £15 million. These will be hard times and very difficult decisions will need to be taken that will undoubtedly impact on our communities. The council has decided in the face of these cuts that the budget will go out for consultation to the Inverclyde community. My next surgeries in November will take place on Wednesday 5th in Newark Primary School 5.30pm - 6.30pm and Tuesday 18th in Kilmacolm Community Centre 6.30pm - 7.30pm. kilmacolm & quarriers Well Done WeeLou By getting 11 inches cut off her hair, WeeLou of Ashes Hair & Beauty in Kilmacolm raised over £300 for The Little Princess Trust, MacMillan Cancer Support and Alzheimer Scotland. WeeLou then donated her cut hair to The Little Princess Trust to make wigs for young children battling cancer. All three charities are close to her heart.

Twinning Update: Cultural and Linguistic exchange begins..... Our twinning activities with our friends in Mérignies continue to gain momentum and we are very pleased to report that there has been considerable enthusiasm on the part the young people in Kilmacolm who have extended the hand of friendship to their contemporaries in France. 26 SIV pupils at St Columba’s now have e-pals from the Collège Immaculée Conception in Seclin. There is no secondary school in Mérignies and many of the young people who live there attend this private College. Pupils from each school were excited to participate in a Skype lesson recently and there are plans for further Skype exchanges in the future. The pupils were intrigued and enlivened by the each other and we envisage that this will prove to be a very fruitful cultural and language exchange, enhancing the curriculum both here and in France. To that end we are delighted that a member of staff from the French school will visit St Columba’s in October to discuss the future of the school-twinning and explore opportunities for possible exchange visits.

Equally, pupils from Kilmacolm Primary School have begun forming friendships with children in Mérignies and have written letters to their French friends describing themselves, their school and the village. They are excited about learning all about Mérignies from their new pen pals. Again it is hoped that this will be the beginning of a firmly rooted friendship between the children of the two villages. In a further bid to cement friendships and strengthen links with the people of Mérignies the Twinning society has put together a proposed trip to France, the details of which are outlined in the article below. OUTLOOK OUTLOOK, the social community group in Kilmacolm, is led by the Community Issues team of the Old Kirk, and meets in the Kidston Hall on 1st and 3rd Thursdays monthly from 2pm - 4pm. On Thursday 6th November the Topic of Interest will be ‘Understanding Alzheimer’s’, a counsellor from Alzheimer’s Scotland will share their professional insight with us and help us to understand how to help others in difficulty. Sounds International - East Renfrewshire Community Choir East Renfrewshire-based community choir, Sounds International, has been singing to raise funds for Quarriers in the run-up to Christmas for several years. Kilbarchan East Church Christmas Fayre
An early intimation that the Fayre will take place on Saturday 6th December from 10am-12 noon in the church halls-keep the morning free as Santa will be in attendance for the children. In June, I reported that concerns had been raised with me in regard to the safety of children crossing Meadside Avenue at Kilbarchan Primary School. Following discussion with members of the parent council, staff at the school and council officers, it was agreed that two informal crossing points should be created. I was therefore delighted to attend the opening of the two crossings which had been completed in the week prior to the October holiday. There is no higher priority than the safety of our children and many thanks go the parent council and staff for helping to take this forward There has been a recent and very regrettable rise in incidents of vandalism and anti social behaviour in Lochwinnoch. I can report that Police Scotland have confirmed that in an attempt to catch the culprits they have increased patrols in the village. At times I have been rightly critical of the major utilities, so I am pleased to commend Scottish Water on their latest initiative to protect people against conmen posing as workmen . Bogus callers often target the elderly and most vulnerable in our villages, therefore the Card Check and Call advice is welcome. Checking the ID card through the peephole of the door, or asking the caller to put the card through the letterbox, and if worried calling the police is sound advice . I can report that the overhanging branches at the foot of Branscroft in Kilbarchan have now been cut back by the landowner. I know that these branches have exacerbated the problems for drivers and pedestrians at this location so this is a welcome development. Finally back to the annual brain teaser that is the Kilbarchan pipe band annual quiz [this year Towns and Cities of the British Isles) the draw for which will take place at the bands Annual Ceilidh on 1st November - One of these days I will get more than half of the quiz right! Tribute to Derek Parker from the Unknown Athlete Each November, which in some Christian traditions is known as the Month of the Dead, we commemorate those who have fallen in combat at the Annual Remembrance Day parades. Following the Great War, which began one hundred years ago this year, the very identity of those who had fallen was sometimes unknown. This meant that tributes were often paid worldwide to the Unknown Soldier, as a representative of all who had died. Recently a constituent of mine contacted me regarding my initiative to call a new street in Johnstone Parker’s Way, after the late Derek Parker. He was contacting me on behalf of his daughter, who had now graduated from university and lived elsewhere in the British Isles. She had been able to attend Derek’s funeral some months ago but has been reflecting on all that Derek had did for her, as her coach and as a friend, and wanted to record a tribute to him. She always remembered the encouraging chats with Derek over coffee, a process which obviously worked as she, as a member of the Kilbarchan Harriers, had ran in two Commonwealth Games and at the Seoul Olympic Games. But the young woman in question was clear that she did not want to be named. So this tribute to the late Derek Parker comes from the Unknown Athlete, who represents all those athletes whom Derek nurtured and encouraged. Cllr Andy Doig

kilbarchan & lochwinnoch School Reunion A special Kilbarchan Primary School reunion took place at the Lynnhurst Hotel, Johnstone on 2nd October. The 7 ex pupils were all 80 this year. The photograph (right) shows the girls in their class when they were 12 years old. Unfortunately some of the former pupils have passed away and a few we were unable to contact. St. Fillan’s Catchment Review
Having pushed for changes to be made to the St. Fillan’s Primary School catchment since my election two years ago I am delighted that we are now within a consultation period on this. I am conscious that other Local Councillors for the area have also desired for this to happen for some time and I am delighted that I have been able to push for delivery on this as part of the newly elected administration. The omission of Craigends from the St. Fillan’s boundary causes confusion and inequality and I have always felt this must be remedied. As Depute Convener of Education I look forward to completing the consultation process and I hope to confirm that these changes are in line with the desires of local parents.

Alongside the community council I have previous called for BT to look seriously at the broadband speeds currently serving the village. It is simply unfair that many areas enjoy speeds which allow access to services such as reliable internet based digital television and yet Houston’s speeds often fall well short of this. With central government funding and an on-going national roll out of improvements I believe we must demonstrate a desire within the area to take advantage of the potential for change. To this end, I have established a petition and I will be arranging for this to be circulated within the village. Please do send back the petition slips and add your voice to this push for a better service in the area.

Commitment to a Fairer, More Prosperous Scotland The Scottish Government remains committed to the NHS and creating a fairer, more prosperous Scotland – after John Swinney’s draft budget pledged a further £288m increase in the NHS budget as well as a share of £70m to allow local Councils who continue with the council tax freeze and a number of measures to mitigate the impact of Westminster’s unfair welfare cuts.
We’ve always been clear that Westminster’s welfare cuts are utterly misguided. The fact that we have to pay to mitigate the unfair policies of government Scotland didn’t vote for shows exactly why powers over welfare should be in Scotland’s hands. This budget perfectly demonstrates the vastly different priorities of Scotland and Westminster. The Westminster parties must now deliver the substantial economic and welfare powers we need to make Scotland an even more prosperous and fairer country. The people of Scotland will accept nothing less.
Fracking in Scotland
The UK Government will remove the rights of householders to object to oil and gas drilling and hydraulic fracturing beneath their homes. This will include householders in Scotland, and comes despite 99 per cent of respondents to the UK Government consultation on the proposals objecting to them. Whatever your view on the issue of unconventional oil and gas – and it is clear that there are both opportunities and concerns - there is only one way that the people of Scotland can determine the approach in Scotland – including beneath their homes and land. That is with the devolution of the necessary powers to Scotland and the current devolution process for the “extensive new powers” promised in the vow should include these powers.

As some of you might know, the Remembrance Day Service in the Village is at the war memorial on 9th November at 12.45pm. I am laying the wreath this year on behalf of the community and it is something I take great pride in. The new town hall in Johnstone centre is coming on well and although based in Johnstone Town centre, I am sure the users of the various services that will be based in the new building from the village areas will be delighted with it. I was at the Howwood Community Council AGM recently and when you hear the reports of their activities during the year it is amazing the amount of the work they do for Howwood. The village is lucky to have them. I also recently attended the St Benedict’s High School prize giving. The youngsters put on a good show and I have no doubt St Benedict’s is a school that is doing well. Remember my surgery in Howwood is on the fourth Thursday of the month between 6pm and 7pm in the Village hall.

Diaporama Five members had been to an Audio Visual day in Bothwell so we had a report about the sequences seen and ‘hints & tips’ we had heard. The main event was “Colin’s Spectacular” and it definitely lived up to its title! Beautiful images were combined with well-chosen music that enhanced the sequences. There was a great variety from Art of the Dance (ballet), Colour of Carnival to the British Grand Prix, HMS Victory to name but a few. He showed a poignant and thought provoking sequence about the ‘demolition’ of old ships - it really made you think of the dangers and conditions faced by the workers. Body Art (wow!!) showed a new technique - watch this space! We ended the evening with a cycle ride along the Leeds Liverpool canal and the Tour de France in Yorkshire. A superb evening! Our next meeting is David’s “ Tail o’ the Bank” at 7.30pm, Carrick Centre, Houston on Monday 10th November. Visitors are always welcome!

OUTDOORS news General Beekeeping Due to the warm end to summer and start of Autumn, the Honeybees were still bringing in pollen and nectar later than usual and producing brood into early October. Local Beekeepers have spent October getting their colonies prepared for winter, ensuring they have enough stores to see them through as the beekeeping season starts to slow down. Working with the colonies includes reducing the hive entrances and fitting Mouse Guards where necessary. In October and November only a few of the garden plants are still flowering and are beneficial to bees. Examples are Ivy (see below – many people are not aware that Ivy flowers and can cut it back before it does – please don’t), Sedum, and Asters. October and into November is the time to plant wood anemones, crocus and snowdrops, the flowers of which the honeybee depends on for pollen in the spring to enable them to start to raise their first brood of the year.

The Garden in November Winter Jasmine
Few winter shrubs can match the Winter Jasmine for the sheer exuberance of its display, or for its hardiness, for though it flowers best on a sunny wall, it will also thrive against a bleak, north facing one. Cheerful yellow flowers appear on bright green stems and brighten up dull winter days. Apart from being trained against a wall, winter-flowering jasmine can be allowed to cascade down banks or old tree stumps. Plant at any time of the year in almost any soil. Prune back old or dead wood immediately after flowering. The Helleborus argutifolius makes a good companion plant to the winter jasmine. Crisp and entirely in keeping with winter are the cool, clear sprays of apple-green flowers, up to two inches across, bursting from the clusters of buds in mid-winter. The delicate shades are nicely matched by the deep green foliage. Plant in autumn in partial shade and in deep, well-drained but moist soil. Once planted, do not disturb. Propagate by division.

October’s KBA meeting focused on an introduction to Practical Microscopy, which showed beekeepers how to analyze a sample of bees for common Honeybee diseases and conditions. This was a very interesting hand on look in minuscule detail at the anatomy of bees and an opportunity to test our own colonies. Attending the session were members of KBA which include active Beekeepers The Flowers of the Ivy Plant. and also people interested in the pastime of beekeeping – so you do not have to be a beekeeper to join us! The Kilbarchan Beekeeping Association meets during Autumn & Winter months in the Kilbarchan Steeple hall at 7.30pm - 10pm. RSPB Lochwinnoch As we move into the colder months, many of our winter migrants are starting to make an appearance, with recent counts of water birds on the Barr Loch having reached over one thousand! At this time of year, keep an eye out for a variety of waterfowl – including some of our regular visitors to the reserve, such as golden eye, teal, wigeon, tufted ducks and goosander. Whooper swans, our winter visitors from Iceland, are also beginning to arrive and can be seen across the waters of the Aird Meadow and Barr Loch.

We will be offering the opportunity to explore the RSPB Lochwinnoch Reserve by night as part of our candlelight winter guided walk on Saturday 6th December at 5-7pm. Visitors will be able to make and decorate their own lantern to take out on the trails, and then use these to light the way as they are guided through the reserve whilst hearing stories about the reserve and viewing wildlife in a new and unique way! Brighter Bridge of Weir Viva Bridge of Weir!
It may not have been Las Vegas, but Brighter Bridge of Weir’s Fun Casino night in the British Legion club last month had enough razzmatazz to keep everyone happy! It was a full house and all of the punters seemed to be having a ball. Pink Cocktails, Fun Casino, had four croupiers at the event and the tables were buzzing from beginning to end. The Brighter Bridge of Weir group say that the support was hugely encouraging. They had approached most of the local businesses asking for support in the way of donations for prizes. As treasurer, Margaret Greenlees said, “Everyone we asked provided us with something, from bottles of wine to gift vouchers. It was a fantastic response. And the local residents, too, were very supportive. As well as buying tickets and spending money on the night, many also donated prizes.” Too many to mention here, but more details can be found on the website www. brighterbridgeofweir.org and the beauty of it is, every penny raised will be spent on enhancing Bridge of Weir. The group also wish to express their thanks to the committee and staff of the British Legion club for their help and support. Although we’re now heading into the depths of winter, the group’s outdoor work hasn’t stopped. The spring and summer displays have gone now, of course, but the planters and baskets are being stocked with bulbs for next spring’s showing. And they are also aiming to enhance the Christmas decorative displays in the village. We can expect to see an enhanced lighting display this year as Brighter Bridge of Weir’s volunteers augment the display provided by the Community Council. Never a dull moment!

Dr Jennifer Miller gave a fascinating talk on Bio - Archaeology, “Plants, People, Places”. Head of Forensic and Environmental Archaeology Services for York Archaeological Trust, an environmental charity, Dr Miller explained that her work at the Northlight Heritage Dickson Laboratory in Glasgow involves human osteology, forensic archaeology and environmental archaeology. The latter is defined as the study of the past environment where soils plants and animal remains from archaeological sites are analysed. Focusing on Archaeobotany, Dr Miller described the pollen, diatoms and macro plant remains that are found, either waterlogged or carbonised. Different information can be gleaned about the site depending on whether the remains are carbonised or come from waterlogged soils. The plant remains can tell us how the people used and changed the land yielding information about habitat, climate and nutrient levels. Diatoms are flood indicators in soil and water oxygen levels, depth and whether water is flowing can be determined. Pollen is preserved in anoxic wet ground - bogs - and is found, for example, in cesspits and latrines. Dr Miller told us that carbonised remains give a different picture. These result from cooking fires and accidental or ritual house burning. The wood used for fuel can be discovered from the wood anatomy of the remains, oak and hazel being relatively easy to Identify but birch and alder presenting greater difficulty. The people who built Crannogs and other early dwellings had a good understanding of wood and its varying properties depending on tree species. Our speaker gave Alder as an example; it was used for piers and also for clogs because it withstands alternating wet/dry conditions. Oak, by contrast, is strong but only if it is kept dry. Jennifer Miller illustrated her talk with examples of sites that have been excavated. One of these is Oakbank Crannog on Loch Tay. There were 18 crannogs there and they were first excavated underwater. The divers were limited by the water temperature; it was very cold. Over 150 plant taxa were identified indicating that the inhabitants were well fed and that they traded. There were different phases of construction; this was determined from the pile points where debris had fallen in. The buildings were made of wattle (willow) panels, moss and bracken. There was evidence of animals having been in the Crannog and barley too. Although barley predominated, both Emmer and Spelt wheat were found. The presence of Cloudberries may indicate transhumance since these are montane. Dr Miller also mentioned work undertaken at Dumbreck Crannog, Dunbarton; Claish Timber Hall, Callander; Stirling Tollbooth; Medieval Burghal Plots, Ayr and Ben Lawers Flax Retting Pit. There was too much to mention in this wee piece but what an interesting lecture! French Xchange Scotland Group Depart
A group of 12 French students visited and volunteered for the Park during the first fortnight of October. Amongst their tasks were rhododendron clearance, sitka spruce removal, sampling the local cuisine (haggis!) and Scottish dancing with the Ranger Service! The group also achieved their John Muir Discovery Level Award as well as certificates of appreciation from the Park itself for all their hard work.

The long spell of settled weather which we all enjoyed this year kept our displays looking quite presentable well into October, and so it was with some reluctance that teams of our active gardeners recently cleared away all the summerflowering plants and replaced them with ones which will give interest throughout the winter, as well as with bulbs to delight us in the spring. We have also replanted the Birkmyre Park containers and prepared one or two other little surprises for you around the village.
Over the weekend of 11th-12th Oct, Clyde Muirshiel helped over 100 children experience sailing in free taster sessions at the annual Scottish Boat Show, Inverkip. Our attendance was in partnership with RYA Scotland and as members of the Discover Inverclyde tourist group. Let’s hope we got some potential sailing stars of the future interested in the sport!
Sourcing funding is an on-going process and so it was very encouraging that our application for a grant from Inverclyde Council for each of the next three years was successful. This three year grant – a welcome innovation – will greatly help in our planning and will reduce the dreaded form-filling. Once again we are very grateful to the Council and to Councillor David Wilson for so willingly supporting our application.

Grow Kilbarchan We have been making good progress with our growing space behind The Trust in Kilbarchan. Planting areas have been marked out and we are sourcing materials to construct our first raised beds. The plan is to get onions and garlic in during November, but to do that we need your help! We need as many volunteers as possible to help clear the area of dock. Bring a fork, enthusiasm and perhaps a flask of tea! We will be in the garden behind The Trust from 2pm on the 9th November. We will be having our AGM on 2nd November at 2pm in the Old Library Centre in Kilbarchan. We will be reviewing our first year of action and making arrangements for our second. PETS news Fireworks Phobias
Many pets find Bonfire night a very frightening, stressful experience. In one study 61% of pet owners reported that their pets were afraid of fireworks. Signs of anxiety and fear can include: •Cowering or hiding •Trying to run away or escape (including digging behaviour) •Passing urine or faeces in the house •Restlessness panting

•Dogs barking incessantly If you think your pet may have a problem with fireworks, it is important to visit your vet well in advance of the event. There are many products on the market designed to help pets cope with scary situations. These include Adaptil diffusers and collars for dogs, and Feliway diffusers for cats, which release calming pheromones. Products such as Zylkene and Calmex help reduce anxiety. As a pet owner there are a number of things you can do to help your pet cope. Before the fireworks begin: •Walk dogs before it gets dark. Keep cats indoors and provide them with a litter tray. •Feed your pet before the fireworks begin. Once the noise starts they may be too distressed to eat. A high carbohydrate meal for dogs may help make them sleepy and calmer.

Pets Fun Day This was a fun day that Pets at Home Abbotsinch put on early October. It was a competition to find the cutest best dressed pet, and there was many competitors. The winner was the little dog in the hat who is part of an on line fund raising project called Barking Fun For Fundraising. You can enter many competitions and win many prizes on line. Pets at Home also raised more money for two charities, the Staffordshire Rescue Scotland and the local Royalheart Greyhound Rescue who both got over £400 to help with helping the dogs.
Luna is a gorgeous girl who loves attention and meeting new people. She loves a run around the paddocks for 5 minutes and then after loves some attention and cuddles! SCHOOLS news Houston Primary School and Nursery Macmillan Cancer Coffee Morning On Thursday 25th September Houston Primary School and Nursery held a very busy and successful coffee morning in aid of Macmillan Cancer. The pupils and staff wore green to mark this special event, made a variety of cakes and biscuits and some even chose to enter ‘The Big Bake Off’ challenge! The judges were representatives from Houston and Kilallan church and Mr. Edge from the Houston Cake Company. They had a very difficult task tasting cakes ALL morning! The overall winner of the competition was Marcus Hewitson from Primary 7 who entered an amazing cake in the shape of a coffee cup with accompanying biscuits and crumbs. The judges were delighted with the presentation and the number of Fairtrade ingredients that had been used. G u e s s i n g games were won by Summer Pinkerton-Lamb from Primary 2 who guessed the number of gummy bears on the cake and Eva Graham from Primary 3 who guessed accurately the number of chocolate buttons on the cake. Both were delighted to be the winners and enjoyed sharing and eating their cakes at home with their families. The Enterprise Team also had a Fairtrade stall which sold a variety of items, raising an amazing £431.78 towards our grand total of £1690.23. Thank you to all those who supported this event. Nursery Sponsored Hike On Tuesday 30th September the pupils of Houston Primary School Nursery went on a sponsored hike to the estate grounds beside Woodlands Nursery. This was a very big hike for little legs! The children explored the woods where they found a variety of plants, animals, streams, bridges and even a waterfall. On return to nursery the children were exhausted and some even had a little snooze. The money raised will go towards the purchase of new outdoor equipment for our very own forest garden development.
Youth Engagement Programme LEAP’s Youth Engagement Programme, YEP! has got off to a great start. We’ve had a bunch of very creative young people making new clothes from old, making films, doing animation and doing woodwork in the woods. Come and see some of what they’ve been up to at the Craft Fair in the McKillop Institute in Lochwinnoch on the 8th November between 11am and 2pm.

THINK ECO Competition
LEAP have launched their inter school THINK ECO competition. They are challenging each class in Bridge of Weir, Howwood, Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch Primary Schools to enter a visual display, for example, a film clip, comic strip or wall mural, with an eco theme. Bridge of Weir Primary If you’re near the nursery, listen out for cries of “Ooh-ar!” and “Shiver me timbers!”, and a glimpse of the odd stripy jumper, as the children practise their best pirate voices as part of this term’s topic. Meanwhile, our P1s are very excited about getting their first reading books home after the October holiday. Just before the holiday P2 pupils were thrilled to share their learning about the Celts. Sophie has loved the topic, but on reflection wasn’t too impressed with the Celts’ sleeping provisions, “They didn’t have sheets, and your cover was an animal skin!”

Making good choices about diet, exercise and a healthy lifestyle is central to our Health and Wellbeing programme. All our P6 pupils have been attending weekly swimming lessons at the On-X Sports Centre in Linwood – some learning from scratch, while others developed their technique or had a go at new strokes. Our various lunchtime and after-school clubs continue to provide extra-curricular sporting opportunities. A recent addition to these is our “Happy Feet” walking club for P3 pupils which Mrs Kent, Miss Toole and the children have been out and about in their hi-vis vests, getting some exercise and enjoying exploring new and hidden corners of our village.
It was a wild and windy day outside but cosy in the Playgroup Hall when we made our Autumn Tree picture. This was a group art project involving a great deal of brown paint, glue and the leaves which everybody brought in and it was a great team effort which the children enjoyed admiring with their families afterwards. Even if you don’t like getting messy, there’s always something to do at Playgroup and in November and December, we look forward to our old friend, Jo James, coming in to deliver Musicland sessions - a chance to enjoy music and rhythm. We are very proud of the commitment and achievement of our P7 pupils who have completed their Playmakers training, a six-week programme focussing on the development of leadership, organisational skills, communication and teamwork.

Finally, many thanks to everyone who sent in donations for the Renfrewshire Foodbank as part of our harvest celebrations. The tables at our harvest assembly were groaning under the weight of 10 boxes of food, which will be distributed to families in Renfrewshire who may be experiencing financial hardship.
We are just putting the finishing touches to our 2015 calendar which will include pictures created by children from both groups, look out for it going on sale soon.
Duchal Nursery School The children all had a wonderful time at Pollock Park enjoying the fantastic dray ride through the park, spotting highland cows and singing along in the Autumn sunshine – a great addition to our transport topic! We’ve also been to the Riverside Museum where we saw all sorts of modes of transport from across the years bringing our topic to life!

Gryffe High School Friday 3rd October marked an annual event on the Gryffe High school calendar where staff enjoyed a coffee and some home baking all for a very good cause – the Macmillan nurses. The morning was organised by the Newly Qualified teaching staff with help from Mrs McAleavy and other staff from the Science Department. Many lovely raffle prizes had been collected by staff in previous weeks and this added to the atmosphere and money raised. £343 was raised from the Coffee Morning and Raffle.

At lunchtime, Mr Johnson had been persuaded (by science staff!!) to take part in the Ice Bucket Challenge with the money going to Macmillan nurses. This event was a great success and raised £175 which was an amazing total. In all, staff and pupils were able to hand over the sum of £518 for this excellent cause. Howwood Primary School In term 1 Howwood PS has been focussing on Outdoor Learning. This is an approach to learning which incorporates all curriculum areas. Activities range from reading to art and design, model making and the sciences. P1 has been learning about the primary colours in art. By using puddles as mixing palettes they were able to experiment with all the different colours they could create from red, yellow and blue. They have also experienced the wonder of looking at the vastness of the sky. They can recognise the sun, moon and stars and can link them to daily patterns of life.
They have explored how the position of the sun changes in the sky as the day goes on. P2 have been designing and building Scarecrows as part of their Farm topic. They have had to solve many challenging problems along the way. P3 have been studying the Rainforest. They have been comparing homes in Howwood to those you may find in the Amazon. They have been able to use what they have learned to construct their own dens which give shelter from rain and protection from the sun and the wind.

Kilbarchan Community Nursery The children recently took part in Eco schools Scotland ‘Big picnic’ day to promote locally grown produce. A group of children went to Kristin’s garden to pick brambles and apples to eat at the picnic. Other parents and children also brought in their own home grown fruit and vegetables for the children to learn all about healthy eating. The children had a picnic at nursery and enjoyed, tomatoes, cucumber, carrots and apples, as well as delicious home-made bramble and apple jelly in sandwiches. The following week they learned about using k i t c h e n utensils safely when they used some more fruit to make apple crumble to take home and eat for tea. Ellis said ‘It was good with some cream to cool it down!’
Abbey Nursery
World renowned early year’s lecturer Alice Sharp passed on her expertise to staff recently when she joined the team for the day to explore Next Steps in Literacy at the nursery. Understanding how to engage and inspire children is fundamental for their learning and Alice works on the principle that things need to be kept simple and creativity must be allowed to flourish. Having ‘played like children’ the day was voted a great success and the team couldn’t wait to take some of these strategies into the playroom.
P4 are investigating the different forms water can take and have been relating their findings to everyday experiences. By using guttering they have been able to experiment with the transportation of water and the effects that elevation and gravity have on it. In Art they plan to make lovely colourful Ice Balloon sculptures which can be used to decorate the school grounds during the Winter months. P4/5 are using the outdoors for their Maths Trail which lends itself to challenges in number work, measurement, 2D/3D shapes and problem solving. They are using the car park and the vehicles, the fabric of the building and the open spaces to develop critical thinking skills and problem solving strategies.
P7 are using the school grounds to illustrate lines of symmetry for a range of 2D shapes and to apply their understanding to create and complete symmetrical pictures and patterns. They are using many natural resources from the outdoors to create their shapes and patterns. They are recording their findings in the playground by using chalk and drawing their own Venn and Tree diagrams. These findings are then recorded using digital cameras and video recording equipment. P7 are also developing their Literacy Circles outside and are creating their own Literacy spaces in the school’s Secret Garden. Children have said that they enjoy working outdoors because it helps to keep them calm and focussed. They have said that Outdoor Learning helps them to concentrate and expand on their ideas because of the physical freedom and space they have around them. Some pupils commented that noise levels were reduced and the outdoors were no longer a distraction because they were outside enjoying the spaces instead of being inside.

Our curriculum Evening for parents in October continued the theme of ‘Literacy through Play’ and was very well attended, giving staff and speakers the opportunity to look at how to encourage this within the nursery and through home learning links. Meanwhile in the Grasshoppers and Busy Bunny playrooms, Grandparents week has been another great success with more ‘special visitors’ than ever coming to share experiences with the children. Thank you to the 30 plus Grandparents who came along and also contributed to the ‘Compliments Tree’ with their personal feelings about their grandchildren. Other activities the children have enjoyed recently has been the creation of a wormery using recycled materials; visiting St Fillans for a structured PE lesson and making the most of the autumn weather playing in the mud kitchen and making leaf prints.

Woodlands Day Nursery
We are well and truly into Autumn and our children of all ages are having lots of fun participating in a whole range of activities surrounding our Autumn theme. Our children have been out in the woods enjoying kicking and scrunching through the dry fallen leaves from the trees, listening to various sounds of the birds, branches crackling under their feet and spotting planes flying in the sky. They had lots of fun throwing ‘Pooh Sticks’ into the river and watch them float downstream. Whilst on their walks they collected pine cones, chestnuts and a host of different size, shapes and coloured leaves to add to their interest tables for which they became very creative in their artwork using natural resources as well as making wonderful Autumn discovery bottles. Some Rising 5’s children are planning a visit to Paisley Museum for the Lego exhibition following the Lego Movie topic which we are looking forward to. In November, our children will be learning about the history of Guy Fawkes including the safety issues and Tweenies are hoping to organise a visit from our local fire department to come to the nursery. We will also be celebrating St Andrews Day by learning some Scottish dancing and songs. Rising 5’s will commence rehearsals for their Nativity Show and look forward to a Pantomime which we will keep you updated in their progress.

The children are enjoying our new topic ‘animals’. So far we are learning about pets and have brought in photos of our own pets. We are also having fun pretending to look after animals in our ‘vets’ in the house corner. The children are becoming familiar with our story of the month, “Jack and the Beanstalk” and have enjoyed pretending to stamp around like giants. Bright Stars Building (3-5 years) The children have been looking at the changes all around us as we move into autumn, and we have collected leaves, conkers and other autumn treasures from the garden and the woods. Our new topic is “Room on the Broom”, which will have a strong literacy focus through story, rhyme and drama. We are also setting up a witches’ den so that the children can explore mixing different materials as they make a range of magical potions!

St Columba Jazz Joins Youth Parliament
Jazz Catto (SVI) has been elected as the Member of the Scottish Youth Parliament for Inverclyde. The remit includes acting as a liaison between the young people of the area and local politicians. The Youth Parliament meets four times annually and debates a wide range of issues. Most recently this included improving support for young carers. Bills passed by the Youth Parliament are then discussed at Holyrood and used to inform the debate at national level.

David Telfer from Kilmacolm is delighted to have won not just one but three curling awards in the last year. In the Scottish Wheelchair Championships in March, David with his team members Alex Harvey (skip), Eddie Fleming and David Bain, won the prestigious Rhona Martin Trophy. This is the second time David has won this prize. He was in the winning team back in 2003 along with Alex Harvey (skip), Michael McCreadie and Paul Webster.

Old Course Ranfurly Golf Club, Bridge of Weir The 2014 season has again been a busy one with increased numbers of members playing in competitions encouraged, possibly, by the general good weather we have enjoyed over the summer. Early in the season we co-hosted the Scottish Golf Union Area Team Championships with our neighbours at Ranfurly Castle and a successful weekend was concluded with a win for the Renfrewshire Team after a gruelling 6 rounds in 3 days. Our 3 man team of Stuart Watt, Stephen Renfrew and Ross Robertson won the County Championship in August and qualified to play in the Scottish final at Lundin Links in September. We also managed to retain the prestigious Muirhead Trophy for the 4th year in a row on the same day that the Ryder Cup was won, so a double cause for celebration. We have continued to attract new members who seem to have settled well into the golfing and social sides of the club and our 5 Clubgolf coaches, assisted by volunteer members, have run introductory courses for those with no golf experience, at minimum cost, for juniors at Easter and Summer and for ladies in September. All courses were very well attended with great feedback from those who took part. We will be running these courses of 4/5 lessons for £10 again next year, so if you are a beginner and are interested in trying golf, watch our website www.oldranfurly.com or call the club on 01505 613214. We are now embarking on our extensive winter and festive social programme which will take us through to Saint Valentine’s night in February with a new season just over the horizon. But before that we are advertising our Winter Try and Buy offer. If you are considering joining a golf club or would like to try our golf club then this is a good way to do it. Our course is rarely closed over the winter and we try to operate with a minimum of winter greens, so why not give us a call? It’s good value for the money. 1st Houston & Crosslee Scout Group The sections have all been busy since the start of the new session in August with the scouts recently completing a midnight hike from Kilmacolm back to Houston. Although the event was cancelled on 3 separate occasions last year due to bad weather, the scouts managed to complete the walk at the first attempt this year. The scouts also took part in a climbing wall activity over 2 sessions in September. The Beavers and Cubs took part in their investiture of new boys during October and November and all sections are now full with the exception of the explorers. The group recently introduced 5 new girls into the scout section which is a first for the group. The Halloween parties were due to take place during the last week in October and the beavers and cubs are due to attend the Christmas Panto at the Paisley Arts Centre on 13th December. The Annual Christmas Fayre will take place on Saturday 6th December from 10am - 1pm in the Scout Hall, South Street, Houston and will hopefully be as successful as last year. It is an important fund raiser for the group. Boys will be out selling tickets through Houston over the next few weeks. Donations for the bottle stall are welcome and can be dropped off over the coming weeks.

The Bears are bearing up! An excellent start to the season for the Senior XV winning on the road against Loch Lomond and Lanark and running in nine tries to pick up two valuable bonus points. Our home games have been less productive as we lost 0-17 to a strong Wigtownshire team, beat Mull 24-21, but lost 7-17 to Millbrae. The fine Autumnal weather has helped our young team perform well and play some expansive rugby with our pack winning good possession and our backs opening up defences with some well rehearsed moves. Experience overcomes Youth in County Golf Final The line up for the final of the Renfrewshire Golf Union Match Play Championship at Paisley Golf Club saw young Craig Pirie from Renfrew facing Greenock’s David Macfarlane who is coy about his age but seems to have been around for some time. Two Paisley members had made it to the semi finals but Craig saw off Chris Guthrie one up while David expended a bit more energy having been taken to the fourth extra hole by Brian Adam.
The quality of golf in the final came as no surprise. At the turn, Craig’s card showed nine straight pars but he was two down. David sank an outrageous putt for a birdie three at the third then knocked his second to “gimmie” range at the sixth. David then dropped a shot at the tenth to let Craig back into the game but bogies at twelve and thirteen had David three up and looking good. Craig responded at fifteen for his first birdie of the day to reduce the deficit but, having caught the rough, could not get home in two at the par five sixteenth. David got his four and won 3 and 2. A great performance. David Macfarlane becomes the most successful Renfrewshire golfer in terms of Match Play Championships having previously won at East Renfrewshire (2000), Fereneze (2004) and Eastwood (2007). He had previously shared the record of three wins with the late, great Barclay Howard. David is currently manager of the County A Team but one wonders if he should be back in the squad! Renfrewshire Team come from behind to keep Challenge Alive Renfrew Golf Club, half way through the match, was not the place to be for those supporting the RGU team as it continued on its run for thirteen championships in a row. The visitors were a strong side from Stirlingshire and, with seven holes played, only captain Ronnie Clark was ahead with two games level and five matches down. In the top game, two of the Scottish international squad – Kilmacolm’s Matt Clark and Graeme Robertson (Glenbervie) were involved in a great battle. Graeme went one up with an eagle two at the 315 yard twelfth hole but Matt fought back to win one up. Craig Pirie was one down at the turn but his opponent found water at the tenth and this was the start of a great recovery with Craig winning 3 and 2. Ronnie Clark held his lead for a convincing 4 and 3 victory. With three games left on the course, Renfrewshire need a win and a half for victory but as the players teed off at the seventeenth all were one down with two to play. Bonnyton’s David Dickson won seventeen and halved eighteen for a half and Stewart Watt from Old Ranfurly became the team hero as he came from behind to grab the all important win with a winning par at the seventeenth and a breaking left to right putt at the last which dropped in for a birdie. Renfrewshire are the only team to have won the first three matches and they travel next to Crow Wood to face Lanarkshire. Renfrewshire Golf Union NAIL BITING FINISH AS RENFREWSHIRE GOLFERS GO FOR THIRTEEN
Renfrewshire Golf Union’s quest for thirteen league titles in the West of Scotland Championship saw a weakened team – no Andrew Farmer, Matt Clark or Gordon Stevenson – travel to Bishopbriggs to meet Glasgow. There, they faced a side which was also without a couple of top players and a nervous day ensued for all. Team captain, Ronnie Clark, met an on form Barry Hume, a past Scottish Amateur Champion who made it to the semis in this year’s Championship. Barry recorded a 5 and 4 win for yet unbeaten Glasgow. Michael Daily and Craig Watson responded well with solid wins to put Renfrewshire ahead but Bonnyton’s Willie McMillan could not cope with a great display of golf from Blair Dalglish (Ralston) one of the winning team in this year’s Youth Championship. Again, Renfrewshire bounced back with wins from David Dickson and Craig Pirie but current Renfrewshire Champion, David Macfarlane lipped out at the eighteenth to lose one down to Haggs Castle’s John Brown. This left David Millar, three down after five holes to Craig Anderson (Sandyhills), with the challenge of fighting back for the half point required for victory and David did just that with a brave performance. So two wins for the Renfrewshire side which entertains the Stirlingshire team at Renfrew Golf Club on Sunday. If you do not get these fundamental points right from the off, you are onto a losing battle. Unfortunately plenty of common misconceptions are still out there. Scenario... “Diet starts Monday...” You start by swapping your breakfast to a piece of fruit. Then lunch time comes and you’ll have just half of your sandwich. Then you’ll start to crave a latte in the afternoon, you are so tired! You feel unable to resist this and give in... Then the guilt kicks in and you decide to just have cereal for tea. We have ALL experienced this one way or another and I still see it in food diaries! There are so many things wrong with this. Your body cannot be expected to run on tiny amounts of food. Don’t make the mistake of thinking that a calorie only has two options; to be either used for energy or stored as fat. That’s not true. Protein and fat have far more important things to do first; like producing hormones, repairing tissue, building new tissues, building your brain cells, insulating your brain cells and so much more. Problem is that when this energy is denied and intake drops too low your body just gets clever. The body’s main priority will always come down to survival, and when this happens it won’t think you are just trying to lose a bit of weight, it will think “starvation... famine... PANIC”. And then things will start to shift; it will hold on to your fat but let go of the ‘energy expensive’ and ‘metabolically active’ lean muscle. Your muscle burns fuel, fat doesn’t. So all this means it’s now lowered your metabolism, got rid of your muscle, and kept the fat. Entirely the opposite of what anyone seeking long term fat loss would want. Start by eating BETTER, not LESS. Stop being scared of food, it’s not there to harm you, it’s there to protect you. Strathgryffe Tennis Club Danish Junior Open 2014 The 1st weekend in October saw 6 Strathgryffe members join a contingent of Scottish players make the trip to Copenhagen for the 2014 Danish Junior Open, accompanied by Martin Woods the Head Squash Coach. This is the 2nd year running that Strathgryffe players have made the trip to Denmark. The team consisting of John Meehan, R u a d h r i McDougall, Jack Smillie, J a c k Chambers, Beth Moglia and Roisin Wright built on the previous y e a r ’ s experience to surpass all expectations. All the players won through their first round matches with notable results from Beth Moglia who came 5th and John Meehan who reached the final against Swiss player Miguel Mathis, the number 1 seed and No.3 in Europe. John played really well but was eventually beaten in 3 close games to finish a well deserved runner up in his first European tournament! Plans are already in motion for the trip next year. Strathgryffe is offering non members the opportunity of a FREE taster adult/ intermediate squash coaching session. These sessions will be suitable for beginners or players who have not played for a few years and further follow on coaching classes for non members will be available. Barts Bash Castle Semple Sailing Club was very proud to take part in “Barts Bash”, a global sailing race to commemorate the life of Andrew Simpson and to raise funds for the Andrew Simpson Foundation. The charity was set up in 2013 to honour the life and legacy of Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson MBE, Olympic Gold & Silver medalist and America’s Cup Sailor by using sailing to transform the lives of young people. On behalf of Castle Semple Sailing Club Committee a huge thank you to everyone who came along. A very special thank you to David Hill and all his instructors from the Centre and the people who sailed the Access boats bringing our total entries past the magic figure of 25 up to 29 - fingers crossed that once all our results are submitted along with the paper work and photographs confirming what we did we should get our names printed in the Guinness Book of Records. I know of several people who were unable to join us because of prior/ family commitments which cannot be avoided but a significant number of members with family and friends turned out to support a very worthy cause. Of course the fantastic weather helped; I don’t think we have had so many boats on the water since our 45th anniversary sail. BBQ Steve more than lived up to his name and fired up the barbecue well before 11am ably assisted by his friend Lesley. A huge amount of burgers, sausages, chicken and corn were devoured before Arthur summoned us to the pontoon for a photo call. Never had so many people been seen on the pontoon at any one time before when suddenly I had that sinking feeling........and wet feet - we had probably broken a H&S rule exceeding the maximum amount of people on the pontoon oops. The race started promptly at 2pm but unfortunately the wind had dropped to something less than 1 mph meaning that some of us only just made it back in under the 2 hours, in time for tea and cakes! Congratulations to Douglas and Pamela winning the race in an enterprise (beating the vortex and vago). Approximately £150 was raised on the day for the Andrew Simpson Foundation plus money from just giving. For a small club we did fantastically well.

Strathgryffe Girls are Best in the West Congratulations to Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash Club 12 & u Girls 1st Team. The girls concluded their fifth and final series of individual and doubles matches convincingly against Newlands on Saturday 11th October to finish unbeaten and top of the table in the 12 & u Girls Division 1 of the Aegon Team Tennis West of Scotland Competition 2014. The Strathgryffe team also defeated Whitecraigs, Western and Woodend and won over 95% of the sets they played, and over 88% of their games. Well done to Abbie Kerr, Molly Goulding, Eilidh McLaughlin, Lucy Bliss, Karina Dunlop and Julia Smith who showed great team work, friendship and most important had lots of fun! Castle Semple Sailing Club GP14/National 12 Racing and Ceilidh - 11th/12th Oct’14
I know I may be starting to sound repetitive but what a fantastic support from the club members during the GP14/National 12 racing weekend. Many members who are not often seen out in GP14s really entered into the spirit of the event (especially on Sunday morning I understand with the beers on board certain boats- didn’t help their sailing though!). Unfortunately some of the expected GP14s did not visit either because of illness or I suspect they read the weather forecast and decided that it was not worth the trek over to us to sail in what were extremely light winds again (although as Arthur said not as light as Bart’s Bash). However, we did have 4 National 12s (3 visitors and 1 CSSC) and 10 GP14s (2 visitors and 8 CSSC) competing. We managed 3 races on Saturday afternoon and 2 on Sunday morning (although the second was a shortened course). The overall GP14 winners were Peter Collins (CSSC) and Duncan Greenhalgh (Derwent) sailing together and Angus Beyts of the N12s. Many congratulations to all winners and well done to all those who took part. The visitors expressed their very grateful thanks for the warm welcome extended to them by the club and Angus Beyts declared Castle Semple to be the friendliest sailing club he had been to in Scotland . The Saturday ceilidh, I am sure resulted in some sore heads on Sunday morning. Although the star of the evening was young Logan Young for his expert comparing of the raffle - “pink to make the girls wink” (where does he get it from one wonders......) he made us all laugh and was not phased at all. Very many thanks to Kirsten and Logan for managing to extract over £100 out of you all for the raffle. Also very many thanks to all the helpers over the weekend we couldn’t have done it without you. Sadly, that was the last of our events for the season, although we do still have the work party on Sunday 2nd November and the AGM on Monday 24th November. Our winter social programme is now underway with badminton on Wednesday evenings in Johnstone or Linwood and we hope to arrange a 10 pin bowling evening one Friday and possibly curling one Sunday in January.
