Henderson’s Flowers
Set up in 1919 when William Henderson Snr returned from the 1st World War, Henderson the Fruiterer and Florist was set up. Using a horse and cart, William sold his produce throughout the Gryffe area. In 1929 Henderson’s moved to 3 High Street, Johnstone, where it still trades today. William’s son Bill Henderson returned from the 2nd World War and went into partnership with his father in 1947. Henderson’s Flowers joined Interflora in 1948 and is still the local Interflora member for the Gryffe area. Bill was trained by Constance Spry in London, at the famous Royal London College, and went on to win the National Flower Competition run by Interflora. He also appeared on STV. William Henderson retired in 1960 and his son Bill stopped selling fruit and vegetables from that date and became solely a florist. In 1970 Bill Henderson became President of Interflora Scotland and 2 years later his son Allan joined the business. Allan was trained by his father and, apart from 8 years in London, has been with the business since the age of 17. Bill Henderson retired in 1989, but his son Allan still runs the business today.

imilar to 2013, another stupendous year and what a Summer - the BBQ has never seen such action. Although, now with a distinct sting in the air, Autumn is upon us, which brings with it a mandatory bowl of porridge in the morning – you can’t beat it! However, I understand there’s been a bumper Juniper harvest and, given a choice, I’d say forget the porridge for now, mine’s a G&T - bottoms up!
Never mind bottoms, what about Buttons? Panto season is coming – Oh no its not! ... Oh yes it is! And we have our very own thespian in the office, an active member of KDS... Oh no she’s not, Oh yes she is! ... enough already! The KDS Panto is Jack & the Beanstalk, while Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group are playing Mother Goose. Get your tickets early, these brilliant shows are well worth a visit. The old saying, “Spring forward, Fall back” reminds us all of which way to turn our clocks in the Autumn. So, as Summer falls behind us, British Summer Time will end on 26th October at 2am when the clocks go back to 1am. And it seems we’re rushing headlong towards Christmas with a number of fundraising events in this issue with a festive theme. Who could believe that it was one year ago that we reported on the closure of Bull’s Garage in Bridge of Weir. One year on and still no obvious signs of progress, but if we hear anything we will be letting our readers know. CACI - the Ultimate non-surgical facelift With rumours that the Hollywood celebs have been tapping in to this latest skin rejuvenation secret, we wanted to find out more about the CACI Ultimate Facelift. CACI is designed to stimulate the 32 muscles in your face with a series of electrical pulses, giving a plumped-out, youthful appearance to your skin. During each 1 hour treatment session, the therapist will carry out a series of precise movements running soft cotton tipped wands over the skin to stimulate the facial muscles to restore tone and elasticity. Results are visible after the very first treatment but a course of twelve treatments is generally recommended. After a course of CACI facial toning treatments facial contours will look lifted and toned. A monthly top up treatment is recommended to maintain results. I was delighted to try CACI at local accredited salon, Decorus of Kilmacolm. The experience starts with a short interview to determine your skin type and skin care regime. Lying back in the comfort and tranquillity of the salon, my skin was first cleansed and buffed to rejuvenate the skin. Then followed the ‘wrinkle comb’ which emits a very mild tingling sensation on the skin. This is concentrated on the areas where fine lines would form, usually around the mouth and eyes. A soothing cream is used during this treatment to help plump the skin and stimulate collagen growth. LED light is then placed over the areas which have been treated, to stimulate repair on a cellular level, repairing damage such as scarring, acne and sun damage. To finish, the cotton wands are worked over the face, lifting and toning the muscles around the jawline, eyes and frownline. The results were immediately noticeable. Although the skin appears slightly reddened initially, this fades quickly to reveal a younger, brighter you. Within a very short time my skin was softer, fuller and clearer. A Little Birthday Gem I can not believe my beautiful daughter is about to be 40, and I decided instead of buying her a piece of jewellery, to take her on a special holiday away from the demands of life and the rearing of 3 lovely children. SO..... we flew to the magnificent vibrant Italian city of Venice where we stayed in a swell hotel on the Grand canal. Venice is itself a jewel, like no other city on the planet, steeped in history, folklore and fables and most famous for its historic buildings, Gondolas and singing Gondoliers. We strolled through the labyrinth of alleyways, watching the gondolas negotiate the narrow canals before arriving into St Mark’s square for a coffee at the famous Florian cafe and listened to the beautiful music played by it’s mini orchestra. After our short stay we embarked onto the majestic Royal Clipper, the world’s largest true fully rigged 5 masted sailing ship, and big brother to the Star Flyer and Star Clipper, all privately owned by a charming Swedish gentleman whose passion in life is yachts and who had the good fortune to have made enough money to indulge in his hobby. We set sail as the sun began to set and, as the sails unfurled, we slowly glided past the magnificent sights of Venice and St Mark’s square serenaded by the emotive Vangelis music from the film 1492 ....... a magical and unique moment. It was a short itinerary of just 3 nights, sailing down the Adriatic sea and visiting 2 ports, Rovinj in Croatia and Piran in Slovenia before returning to Venice and then home. This was a true little gem of a holiday that will hopefully last in her memory box forever. Star Clippers have a few short duration taster cruises in 2015, but if you are adventurous, why not cross the Atlantic under sail. If you would like to know more about these or other itineraries... Sma Shot Cottage in Paisley Craft Fayre A fabulous day out at the Sma Shot Craft Fayre in Paisley. People came in their droves to see the volunteers in costume working the wheels and serving in the tea room.

The Trust, which was established in tribute to Emma who died in August 2013 aged 27, has raised over £4,500 from donations, fund raising events including a Kilbarchan Singers Concert and the proceeds of a calendar of photographs taken by Emma. The Trustees would like to thank Bobbins, staff, parents and children at Kilbarchan Community Nursery and Primary School and everyone who has assisted in any way. As a result of your help the Trust has contributed funds to three organisations Nordoff Robbins Scotland who will be providing music therapy to children in 3 Renfrewshire schools, Common Wheel’s project providing music workshops for people with dementia in care homes in Glasgow and Live Music Now who will be organising interactive concerts for children and young people in Aberdeenshire and at the same time providing opportunities for young musicians. Friends and football fanatics Kevin McLaughlin and William Milroy held a CFC v RFC ex-pros football match at Keanie Park, Johnstone in September raising over £5,000 for St Vincent’s Hospice. Kevin, an avid Celtic supporter, and William, a Rangers fan were thrilled with the amount raised, St Vincent’s Hospice Andrew Cassidy said “it was great to see such a good turnout and some childhood heroes back on the field. It was a superb total raised and all for local patient care, our thanks go to Kevin, William and their support team.”

Charity Night - Trust Inn, Kilbarchan On Saturday 22nd November a charity night, in aid of Cancer Research UK and the Little Princess Trust (who provide real hair wigs free of charge, to children suffering hair loss), will take place in the Trust Inn, Kilbarchan from 9pm. Carolyn Kerr, a Kilbarchan resident, is donating her ponytail to the Little Princess Trust and will then have her head shaved to raise funds for Cancer Research UK. Other willing victims, sorry, volunteers have also offered to have parts of their bodies waxed in aid of Cancer Research! Carolyn would like to thank Divah Salon, Houston and Susanne Gray of Paris Hair & Beauty Co, Renfrew for giving their time to the evening’s festivities. Friends of Johnstone Day Centre The Friends of Johnstone Day Centre is a group of people who have recently come together in a quest to raise some much needed funds to benefit the needs of the people who use the services of Johnstone Day Centre by providing the means with which to run some extra projects etc. The most recent requirement for funding is a project to ‘energise’ by a programme of health, fitness and vitality, running in conjunction with healthy eating ‘maximised’ by the feel good factor of Reiki. These programmes are costly, but the benefit of all users of the day centre will be massive and the small group - ‘The Friends of Johnstone Day Centre’ are extremely proud that “Awards For All Scotland” have given their backing and funding for this project.

SSAFA - Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association As one of the country’s leading Forces charities, SSAFA assists some 50,000 serving personnel, veterans and their families every single year. Formerly known as the Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen & Families Association, we have been looking after the Forces family for almost 130 years and was the only national military charity supporting servicemen and their families when World War One broke out in 1914. SSAFA’s trained volunteers continue to provide vital practical, emotional and financial support to thousands of people across the country. Last year (2013), Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire & Inverclyde Branch (the Lieutenancy of Renfrewshire) supported 197 veterans and their families in our local community to the value of £143,984 and administered a further £42,676 paid to Annuitants. From 6th-12th October, SSAFA will be holding its annual ‘Big Brew Up’, encouraging people to get together with friends, family and colleagues for a cup of tea and a cake to raise funds for SSAFA. I would like to urge readers to get involved in this fun campaign and support SSAFA’s work. Every Big Brew Up held will enable us to support more people. Paisley & Gryffe Transport Forum Progress Report as at 13th September 2014
The last Progress Report by this action group dedicated to improving public transport in Renfrewshire was in November 2013, and we feel it is now perhaps time to make another statement asserting actions, chiefly behind the scenes, to further this cause. Firstly, however, let us express our regret at the passing of George Davidson who, along with other members of the old and long defunct “Strathgryffe Transport Action Group” (acronym “STAG”), worked to keep the railway to Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm open and who eventually had to settle for its conversion to a SUSTRANS cycle path. It is now largely forgotten that one of the original aims of SUSTRANS was, in addition to providing a nation-wide cycle path network, to preserve the arteries which old railway lines provided, for possible re-use as railway lines again in a future more “railway-enlightened age”. Now this age has become a reality and there are many examples of where railway lines have been and are being restored without sacrificing that ideal of the cycle-path provision. Alas, SUSTRANS has not always lived up to its obligations, and twice within Bridge of Weir alone, they attempted to sell off railway land for profit, which would have made restoration of the railway impossible. Only by constant vigilance and determined action on the part of activists, who are prepared to look ahead to future public transport needs, were these plans thwarted. Now that this more enlightened approach to rail is with us, and car use is becoming more expensive, it is only right that we should take a fresh look at the question of re-opening the line to Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm, this time with a station at Linwood. Although the Paisley and Gryffe Transport Forum (PGTF) was originally set up to pursue the case for the re-opening of the railway line to Bridge of Weir and Kilmacolm, we have always recognised that the number-one railway project for Renfrewshire should be the link to Glasgow Airport, but we also recognised, as many do not, that the re-opening of the Kilmacolm line could advantageously be linked to that Airport Project.

New hope for this Glasgow Airport access link has been offered by a very recent report commissioned by our present-day transport overlords, “Transport Scotland”. This report also happens to use that old acronym “STAG”, in this case the initials referring to “Strathclyde Transport Appraisal Guidance”. This report is currently being examined optimistically by interested parties which includes Renfrewshire Council. More can be said later about this to those that may be interested. As far as Bridge of Weir is concerned, however, it is recognised that, although the provision of a railway link is essentially a cause for the future, the “here-and-now” issue is the appalling state of the bus services serving the village, and we have turned our attention to this and are actively pursuing possible solutions. More about this will be said in the November issue of The Advertizer.

Charity Art Show celebrates 30th Birthday! Glasgow’s Macmillan Cancer Support Art Show this year celebrates its 30th Anniversary and hopes to mark the milestone by breaking all previous records. Over the past three decades the annual and ever popular event has raised around £2.8million and is one of Macmillan’s biggest single fund raisers in the UK. The Show is run solely by volunteers from the Glasgow ’84 Committee, who work tirelessly, throughout the year, to bring together an eclectic range of Scottish Contemporary Art which reflects the rich seam of artistic talent which stretches the length and breadth of Scotland. Nearly 300 artists submit over 800 pieces of sculptures, ceramics, jewellery and of course paintings…..all generously donate 50% of their sales to Macmillan. But this year, to mark the Show’s 30th Birthday, 50 artists have gone the extra mile and are donating a painting each as a 100% donation, in an effort to boost funds for this worthwhile charity. Glasgow’s renowned artist, Jennifer Irvine, has gifted a vibrant painting as this year’s Raffle Prize. Entitled ‘Restaurant Gigondas, Provence’ this typically dappled depiction of a leafy Provence square is instantly recognisable as an Irvine, whose innate ability to bring sunshine and shade in equal measure to her paintings is much envied. This year’s nine day Show, which will be officially opened by BBC personality Jackie Bird, is open to the public from November 2nd to 9th and promises to deliver several other ‘firsts’ in an effort to keep the event evolving. Scottish Huntington’s Association (SHA) is the only Scottish charity dedicated to helping people a¬ffected by Huntington’s disease (HD). HD is a devastating neurological condition which renders the sufferer increasingly dependent on care, usually by their family, over the course of 15 to 25 years. Each child of a person with the condition has a 50% chance of inheriting the disease.
Because of you and the funds you raise, you will make a huge difference to families affected by Huntington’s disease. So, whether you raise £50, £500 or £1000, every penny and pound will be put to good use and this is the difference your savings will make… * Saving £3 on a bag of chips on the way home would pay for a 5 minute call that can change a life * Saving £16 on a round of drinks would provide One to One counselling to a young person affected by HD * Saving £30 on your taxi home would pay for a home visit to someone affected by HD

ON the road Classic Cars Show A Classic Car Show will be held at Castle Semple Country Park, Lochwinnoch on Sunday 19th October, 11am- 3pm. There is space for 80 cars to display and event organiser (and Clyde Muirshiel Visitor Centre Assistant) Jane Fawcett is looking for local cars owners to join her: “Last year we had lots of unusual cars enter into the show. Many classic and custom car owners don’t attend the Classic car show scene, but last year we had many unseen-for-many-years cars as owners were enticed to come down due to the scenic location and the hard standing used. As classic car owners, we usually get punted into a mudbath of a field, so the car park location is fantastic for keeping our much loved motors clean and shiny for the public to ogle! Just 30 minutes from Glasgow, the location makes this show very accessible to everyone in west-central Scotland. Last year we had a tank recovery vehicle, a small fire truck and everything from Hillmans to Hotrods, Triumphs to Jags, Mustangs to Morris, Austin to Astons, Fords to Frogeyed sprites... I’d love to see as many local cars there as possible. It’s free to enter, but please book your car into this popular show as soon as possible.” A collection will be made on the day for the charity ‘Finding your Feet’ which was set up by friends and family of Corinne Hutton, (44) of Lochwinnoch in Renfrewshire who, in June 2013, had her hands and feet amputated after contracting septicaemia. From her hospital bed, Corinne vowed that after
getting herself fixed, she would help others who find themselves faced with such life-changing trauma. Having already raised tens of thousands of pounds, Corinne is devoting her life, to showing not only how an amputee - and single working mum - can adapt their life to embrace new opportunities, but to provide those facing life-changing trauma with a ready-made support network. The charity offers support via counselling, therapy, assistance at home, financial support or treatment that the NHS cannot otherwise provide. Prior to her illness Corinne had herself completed countless marathons and physical challenges for charity. Now walking on prosthetic legs and fitted with a bionic hand, Corinne has become something of a celebrity, earning herself the nickname “The Bionic Mum”. Since her illness, Corinne has walked a mile through Glasgow city centre, has regular skiing lessons, has run the Rocky steps in Philadelphia, rides a bike, drives her own car and is about to start flying lessons. It was recently announced that Corinne will be the first person in the UK to receive a double hand transplant, an operation likely to take place this Autumn. KDS - Panto Time!
Preparations are now well under way for this years KDS Pantomime - ‘Jack & the Beanstalk’ - with boys dressed as girls, girls dressed as boys, singing, dancing, various farmyard animals & a nine foot Giant - not to mention a generous portion of participation from you, the audience. Everyone is rehearsing furiously to bring you the best of entertainment under the watchful eye of our Directive, Mandy. Pantofacts: Pantomime has its origins in medieval morality plays & developed via Commedia dell’Arte, or Italian Street Performers, Harlequinades, & British Music Hall into the institution that it is today. The essence of pantomime is its topicality & its ability to change with the times whilst retaining the traditional storyline & characterisation. Once girls were played by girls & boys by boys but in Victorian times when, remember, even piano legs were covered “for decency’s sake”, the male members of the audience got a kick out of seeing a boy played by a girl in tights, a tradition that endures to this day, along with the Dame being played by a man. The Dame, although a grotesque caricature, is basically a sympathetic character & although she may transgress, she always turns out all right in the end. This is the last bulletin before the November issue so, please, make it all worthwhile & set aside the 27th, 28th & 29th November to come along & give us your support. Beith Arts - 50th Anniversary Year
We at Beith Arts are so excited about our GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY that we have determined that the entire 2014/15 programme of events should be as special as we can make it. The concert on the 19th October is indeed very special. Our artistes are a first-class Dixieland jazz quartet, called Quattro MacJazz. The leader of this group is Forrie Cairns (clarinet) who has made an international reputation especially in the USA and Europe. He is accompanied by Alistair McDonald (banjo/vocal), Lennie Herd (trumpet) and Roy Percy (double bass), who have all achieved fame as both solo performers and as a group. A full repertoire of Dixie jazz, hot gospel, spirituals and Scottish songs will add up to a concert to remember. Electric Vehicle Charger Destruction
We got up on Saturday 6th September to find that the EV Charger had been totally destroyed. As you can imagine, we were totally gutted. The charger had only just been switched on that day and we were waiting for the go ahead to start using it after a final test. The Police suggested that the culprit thought there might have been money in the charger, and that’s why it was targeted. We would like to confirm there is no money in the EV charger.
LEAP Car Club – Electric Vehicle
The car, a Nissan Leaf, has a range of approximately 90 miles, ideal for shopping trips, hospital appointments and visiting friends. With a network of charging points being installed in Renfrewshire and all over Scotland, the car can be taken much further afield. Parking in Glasgow is free for electric cars at designated spaces whilst they are charging. The Car Club, which has been successfully running in Lochwinnoch since May 2012, receives funding from Carplus and the Scottish Government’s Climate Challenge Fund. The Club was expanded to Bridge of Weir in January 2013 and the provision of the Nissan Leaf has allowed the Club to move into Kilbarchan, where there is a list of members waiting to join! EP! Logo Competition for 11 – 18 year olds
LEAP have a new Youth Education Programme, and to celebrate we are running a competition to design a logo for the programme, YEP! The programme offers a range of projects which aim to give young people green skills, a greater understanding of the ecology of our planet and the confidence to drive the YEP! programme themselves. The top prize will be an opportunity to spend a day with designer Niki Taylor of The Top Project in her studio, creating your own made to measure garment. This is a rare opportunity, not only to get your own logo design used by an innovative organisation but one to work with a highly experienced designer who runs an environmentally responsible business, and to walk away wearing a one off designer garment of your own. All 11 to 18 year olds who live in; Kilbarchan, Bridge of Weir, Howwood or Lochwinnoch or who attend either Johnstone, Gryffe, Linwood or St Benedict’s High Schools are warmly invited to submit a design. All applicants must register in order to receive the logo design brief and to submit an entry. Car Club Launch Kilbarchan
We will be bringing the Car Club to Kilbarchan. We will have a Ford Fusion parked in the car park at Ewing Street for Car Club members to use. The first 15 members who sign up get their annual membership for £15, a saving of £45! We will be holding a launch event on 11th October between 12 – 2pm outside the Old Library Centre. Langbank Camera Club
The club’s competition subject for the first meeting of the new session was “Sculptures”. All the photographs submitted were of a very high standard. It was interesting to note the different materials used in the making of the sculptures from sand, wood and metal. The winning entry was awarded to Gary Ramanathan for his night shot of The Kelpies, designed by Andy Scott, which were illuminated by multicoloured laser projections of flags and synchronised with bursts of gas flames and fireworks.
Somerled & the Battle of Renfrew
In the summer of 1164 Somerled, King of The Isles, brought an enormous fleet into the Firth of Clyde. The ensuing battle at the Ness of Renfrew was a major turning point in the history of the Clyde, the Inner Hebrides, and Glasgow. Somerled was killed, his kingdom was divided and the Clyde coast was gradually absorbed into the kingdom of the Scots.
Second place was awarded to David Robb for his photograph of a sand sculpture of the Last Supper. Third place was awarded to Derrick McPherson for monochrome photo of the Statue of Liberty. We opened the 2014/15 session with David Robb providing an excellent presentation of his award winning photographs, which had been taken with his film camera, showing what great results could be achieved without the use of photo editing or digital manipulation techniques. In October the club will meet as usual on the second Monday of the month but we will be introducing a second meeting which will be held on the last Monday of the month. This new date was added to facilitate Digital Projection Imaging where we will judge and discuss the techniques and creative thinking behind the digital images on the big screen. More details about DPI will be provided at the first meeting in October and on the club’s website. The next meeting will be held on Monday the 13th October at 7.30pm in Langbank Church halls. The competition topic for October is “Commonweath Games”. If you are looking for a photographic club to join please come along to our meetings where you will be made most welcome. iT blog with Colin Fyfe of Colcom The recent iCloud hacking scandal, in which hundreds of celebrity’s personal pictures and files were accessed and distributed online, highlights again the need for rock solid security throughout our online lives. To be clear, the only ‘scandal’ that came about was the way in which the pictures and the story were used by the press in my opinion. The cynic in me would believe they had a hand in it from the outset. Further to this, another story broke recently that as many as 5 million Gmail accounts had been hacked, with corresponding passwords posted on some forums. As it turns out, yes, an alarming number had been hacked into successfully although Google insiders say 2% of that number. These reportedly were as a direct result of malware on the client computers and not a direct hack of the Gmail servers. This could have been a keylogger installed on the machine of the Gmail user but another whisper out there was that these hacked accounts could have been as a result of password sharing. By this I mean users like you and me using the exact same details to log into say – ‘smallandnotverysecurewebsite.com’ that we use for our Gmail or iCloud accounts.

Gryffe Valley Rotary
Gryffe Valley’s first major fundraising event of the year is the annual BBQ, which was held recently in Brookfield Village Hall. Some 200 members and guests enjoyed a splendid repast prepared primarily by the Rotary Ladies, with fine steaks etc skilfully BBQed once again by Kilbarchan Scouts. The enthusiastic and indefatigable DJ Archie (a wow on the air guitar!) then ensured that everyone burnt off any excess calories on the dance floor! A most successful evening which raised some £2,300 for good causes – many thanks to all who came along and contributed.
Gryffe Camera Club We had a great first night back on 10th September with a good attendance from current members and it was lovely to see some new faces too! Our opening night gave us the opportunity to show off our new Canon WUX 5000 projector and review last year’s winning images in
high definition, giving us inspiration and sparking a competitive spirit for this season! On 1st October, images for the first round of our league competition will be judged, and the fight for this year’s trophies will begin. On 8th we have a workshop on image processing and view
images taken by budding photographers from the local schools. We have a photography quiz night on the 15th, and then our very own Pat Allan will be giving a presentation on “Slovenia and the Canadian Rockies” on 22nd. To complete the month on 29th the visiting speaker will be Peter Ribbeck, who will be delivering a presentation on “Scottish Landscapes”. Peter is an extremely talented landscape photographer and you can view some of his images online www.flickr.com/photos/peterribbeck. We can’t wait to learn more about the techniques he uses and get some pointers on how to attempt to produce some similar images ourselves! Some images which inspired us from last year are Meadow and Mountain by Pat Allan, Glenfinnan by Andy Stark and Cheeky Moth by Robert Milne.
Breathing Bad Apparently 1 in 4 of us suffer from bad breath on a regular basis and it can be a real problem for some people. Bad breath (halitosis) can make you seem unprofessional at work or unappealing socially. The problem is that most people are too embarrassed to say anything so you may not even be aware that you have a problem. If in any doubt, lick your wrist, leave to dry and then smell, if your wrist smells unpleasant chances are your breath does too. There are numerous causes of halitosis ranging from bad oral health, smoking and the types of food you eat to dehydration and health conditions. The most common cause is a build up of bacteria that breaks down any bits of food stuck between your teeth and gums releasing an unpleasant smelling gas.

In addition to the projects which members actively pursue (including several in support of local young people), Gryffe Valley also makes a number of donations to local and international causes which it identifies or which are drawn to its attention. Locally these have recently included: The Ardgowan, Accord and St Vincent’s Hospices; Dyslexia Action and Alzheimer Scotland; Colourful Kilmacolm and Brighter Bridge of Weir; Friends of Glasgow Necropolis; Kilbarchan Scouts. Internationally, recent contributions have been made to: Freedom from Fistula; Water Aid – which attracted matching funding from central Rotary resources & Mary’s Meals. Wheelchairs On Water (WOW!) is Gryffe Valleys biggest project to date (the specially adapted boat will cost around £25,000) and already more than half that sum has been raised. Recently President Angus Matheson with Adam McCartney visited the new Tesco store in Linwood, when store manager Colin Caldow handed over a cheque for £500 towards WOW! Colin explained that they were delighted to extend their opening celebrations to support this major project in support of the local community.
To avoid halitosis brush your teeth at least twice a day with a good toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste, floss and use a tongue scraper. Chewing sugar-free gum after meals and snacks will help rinse off and neutralize the acids released by the bacteria in plaque. Drink lots of water and don’t eat between meals. If you have dentures, remove them and soak overnight. A good mouthwash can help too and, if you are looking for a recommendation, CB12 has been scientifically proven to neutralise the gases that cause bad breath for 12 hours. If none of this works it might be a sign of a health problem such as a sinus infection, bronchitis, stomach problems or diabetes so check in with your doctor. William Hair, Kilbarchan emigrant to Ulster and America The History Spot By Renfrewshire Local History Forum
William Hair was one of the earliest Kilbarchan men known to have settled in America. He was born in Kilbarchan 1694, the youngest of the four sons of William Hair and Margaret Gardiner. His father was a tenant farmer in Birdland who paid a total of one pound and three shillings in Poll Tax in 1695. Previously the family had lived in Weitlands (Wheatlands). At this time both settlements were fermtouns, small farming settlements usually tenanted by more than one family. Wheatlands still exists today, but Birdland (variously spelled Boreland and Boarland) is long gone. Detail from Roy’s map, 1755, showing Birdland and Wheatlands As a young man William Hair, like many Scots, moved to Ulster where he worked as a farm labourer. This move was not as successful as he had hoped and William became disillusioned. He and a companion John Paterson, who may have been a John Paterson born at Locherside in Kilbarchan Parish in 1693, set sail from Londonderry on a ship bound for Boston, America, captained by a Captain Dennis. In 1719 William and John are recorded as single farmers from Ireland who had recently arrived in the town. However, Boston did not want to support jobless new arrivals. William Hair, now in his mid-twenties, and John Paterson were chased out of town because they were single and jobless. From there, they made their way to Providence and then inland to Brookfield, still in Massechusetts, where new arrivals were made more welcome. In 1720 they were granted a sixty acre lot of land in the north of Brookfield beside Five Mile River, where they set up a Fulling Mill. William built his house on the site. In his youth William may have had some knowledge or experience in this early-mechanised industry in one of the two fulling mills (known as waulkmills in Scotland) on the Black Cart near Kilbarchan.
William Hair was married three times and, between 1725 and 1755, fathered a large family of seven sons and seven daughters. When he married his first wife Elizabeth Owen in 1725, he was designated ‘a clothier, and first of the name in Brookfield’. Elizabeth was only fourteen years old when they married. Sadly, in the same year their first child Jane died in infancy. John Paterson and his wife Mary had a son John, born in 1724, and a daughter, Margaret born in 1726. Both men still resided in Brookfield in 1748 when sixty-six tax-payers signed a petition to the Town Clerk of Brookfield asking for a second precinct with Parish privileges and a meeting house to be set up in the north of the town. Among the signatories were William Hair, John Paterson, sen., and John Paterson, jun. The proposal in the petition was rejected and after continued pressure the matter went to the House of Representatives, on March 25th, 1750. Eventually in 1754 an Act was passed, establishing the new Precinct. A congregational Meeting House was built and a Mr Forbush was appointed as minister. William’s large family and their descendants, like most eighteenth century Americans, volunteered in the various American conflicts and wars which ravaged the country. Some family members were active in the frontier wars against the native Indians. William’s three eldest sons, Abraham, John and William fought for the British troops in the wars against the French in the 1750s. Twenty years later Abraham Hair fought against the British in the American War of Independence. John Paterson, jun. Also fought for independence as a volunteer from Brookfield in Captain Nathan Hamilton’s company stationed at Ticonderoga Mills in 1776-7. In 1786, after Independence had been won, Hair family members supported local Brookfield man, Daniel Shay, in an insurrection by Massachusetts veterans and farmers to address economic grievances. This was known as Shay’s Rebellion. Despite ancient wars and conflicts, descendants of William Hair from Kilbarchan still live in New England almost 300 years after William Hair arrived in Boston. Research into the family was inspired by an enquiry, to Renfrewshire Local History Forum from a descendant, Richard Hare of New York who, perhaps following the family tradition, was a USAF Captain in Vietnam.

Royal British Legion Bridge of Weir Branch
Bishopton Art Group Christmas Art And Crafts Fair Between 10am and 3pm on Saturday 22nd November at Bishopton Community Centre, Gledstane Road, Bishopton, Bishopton Art Group will host their annual Christmas Art and Crafts Fair. Local amateur artists and crafts people will offer a variety of products for sale that will make ideal Christmas presents. The venue has free parking and is a 5-minute walk from Bishopton railway station.
During the afternoon the branch secretary Leslie MacDonald presented Erskine hospital veterans with 2 Ipads and a couple of paintings. The paintings were the work of artist Raymond Moore, a recently deceased branch member. Raymond was a keen artist and sold much of his work in aid of the Royal British Legion Scotland.
Admission to the Christmas Art and Craft fair is free. Tea, Coffee and delicious home baking will be available.

In August, the Royal British Legion Scotland, Bridge of Weir branch, hosted an afternoon of entertainment for a contingent of veterans from Erskine Hospital. With music, drinks, food and bingo being supplied by the branch, all those attending had a very convivial afternoon.

World War 1 Remembrance Concert On Thursday 23rd October at 7.30pm in the Royal British Legion Clubhouse, Bridge of Weir we are holding a small concert to remember the start of WW1.In attendance will be the Steadfast Silver Band from Port Glasgow, also a choir from Bridge of Weir Primary who will sing songs from that era. Also pupils from Gryffe High School. We hope that this will be well attended. The evening will be free and we hope to finish at 9.30pm -10pm.

Flu Vaccination Clinics at Houston and Bridge of Weir Surgeries Flu season is approaching so it is time to consider contacting your GP practice to arrange a flu jab. Flu can be a serious illness. Most people only catch flu once or twice in a lifetime and are often significantly unwell for a few weeks. The flu vaccine will not stop the coughs and colds we all get every winter. Anyone who suffers from a health condition, who is pregnant or who is 65 or over should be immunised. If you have a health condition, flu can hit you hardest. The vaccine is the safest and most effective way of protecting yourself. Conditions and diseases which can make flu much more dangerous include: asthma, chronic lung disease, chronic heart disease, chronic kidney failure and diabetes.
Brighter Bridge of Weir - Gambling On A Successful Fund-raiser A wee burst of late summer weather has meant that the village’s planters and barrier baskets are still looking good. And September’s been so dry our volunteers had to go out and about watering everything twice in a fortnight (and maybe again since the time of writing). However, between now and the end of October, the flowers will be removed and replaced with several thousand daffodil bulbs, which will flower in early spring. Meantime, don’t forget about our Fun Casino Night on 4th October at the British Legion Club in Bridge of Weir. If you have any of the above conditions or any other serious health condition, even if you feel fit and healthy, please speak to your GP practice to find out if you should have the flu vaccine. Flu can seriously affect you, so it is worthwhile being immunised to avoid unnecessary worry for you and those close to you. If you have children who suffer from any of the conditions above, they should be vaccinated too. Also this year, pre-school children over the age of two are being offered immunisation, in the form of a simple nasal spray, at their GP practice. Primary school pupils will be immunised in school with the consent of their parents. If you are pregnant, you are at greater risk of complications from flu. Having the vaccine now could help you avoid catching flu and protect your baby. Unpaid carers of any age, including young carers, are also eligible for the flu vaccine. The vaccine takes around ten days to work and should protect you from flu for around a year. You have to be immunised annually because the virus changes constantly and your immunity reduces over time. Last year’s vaccine will not necessarily protect you from this year’s flu viruses. The flu vaccine can’t give you flu, but it can stop you catching it.

The latest meeting of the Tenants and Residents Association was well attended. Our thanks to Councillor Mclaren, the Police and the Renfrewshire Wardens Service for their attendance. As the Police were unable to attend last month’s meeting the crime figures presented covered both July and August. Over this period there were fifteen crimes reported in the village, these included the wilful fire-raising of wheelie bins, attempted shed breakins, smashed windows and a number of sneak thefts from unlocked houses. To date only three of the crimes have been detected but the Police are following definite lines of enquiry on others. With the nights drawing in and winter almost upon us various dud streetlights throughout the village have been reported for attention. It is also hoped that owners will insure that any trees or shrubbery emanating from their properties are maintained so that they don’t interfere with street lighting. Wheelie bins are causing obstructions in many areas of the village. Businesses and households must remove their wheelie bins from pavements and public areas after they have been emptied, failure to do so could see a charge for the council to remove them. Footfall at the village’s library situated at the Cargill Hall has been reported as being very low. This is a facility we do not wish to lose from the village but it has to be used more often. Given its small size, Renfrewshire Library Service allow books to be ordered free of charge. The library also offers free internet access and a printing service for a nominal fee. The Association would like to thank the gentleman who has been cutting the grass near Burndale Kitchens at the bottom of Jock’s Brae and therefore alleviating the problem of drivers being unable to see oncoming traffic and pedestrians. The next meeting of the Tenants and Residents Association will be held in the Pirie Centre at Freeland Church on the 21st October at 7.30pm.

Which roads and pavements need resurfaced? Crime stoppers are dedicated to fighting crime across the country, and are there as an anonymous route to pass on information about crime. There is no excuse for leaving bags hanging on railings or trees, and you could incur a hefty fine. Find a bin and put them in. Drop into your library and get access to free information resources for work, study, homework and pleasure. Mobile libraries visit Langbank and not so far away is the Bishopton library where you will find a wider selection of books. The Bridge of Weir library is small, but books can be ordered free of charge and there is no limit to the number you can order. You can borrow up to 15 books. They also have Bookbug, a Book Group, free use of the computers, free Wi-Fi, and you can also get tuition for using your tablet and for PCs. If you do then you should know of the locally organised coach service which leaves Kilmacolm at 7.45am, outside the former community centre, passing through Bridge of Weir, stopping on Main St outside the Co-op at 7.49am and Lintwhite Crescent at 7.51am, then stopping in Brookfield at 7.55am. The coach arrives in Glasgow at approximately 8.30am, depending on traffic, making the following stops:• Bothwell Street (outside the former Habitat shop) • Bothwell Street (outside the Clydesdale Bank before Hope Street) • Hope Street (after St Vincent Street) This is a direct service from Kilmacolm through Bridge of Weir and Brookfield to Glasgow via the A737 and M8 and vice versa in the evening. OUTLOOK OUTLOOK is a social community group in Kilmacolm, meetings are held in Kidston Hall from 2pm-4pm and are led by the Community Issues team of the Old Kirk. On Thursday 2nd October the group will enjoy Keep Fit Aerobics led by Eleanor - this is a fun afternoon with exercises designed to be as gentle or as strenuous as you wish. On Thursday 16th October the group will hear from three Charities Ardgowan Hospice, Save the Children, and Christian Aid. There will be stalls to raise funds for the three charities, and we would appreciate any contributions of unwanted but new small gifts for the Tombola stall. Topics each afternoon are followed by tea and refreshments, plus the chance to speak on community issues. kilmacolm & quarriers An introduction to the community of Mérignies - twinned, since July 12th 2014, with Kilmacolm Mérignies is in the département Nord. The population was 2,533 in 2011, and the mayor, Francis Melon, has just been re-elected. The village is around 20km south of Lille, and just a few kilometres from the Belgian border. It is 90 minutes’ drive by motorway from Calais, 60 minutes’ drive from Dunkirk, 90 minutes from Paris by car, and 60 minutes via Lille to Paris via high speed TGV train. This area is served by the A25 motorway from Dunkirk/Dunkerque which permits access to motorway routes both to the east and south east, e.g. Luxemburg, Germany, Alsace, the Vosges and Switzerland and further east and south. The countryside is dotted with attractive dormitory villages, with the airport of Lille/Lesquin (mostly domestic flights) 10km away. Brussels (Charleroi) airport is 60 minutes away by car and served by Ryanair out of Edinburgh. Many World War 1 and some World War 2 sites of interest are in close proximity. The area is 45 minutes away from Ypres to the north, Mons is 35 minutes to the east and 25 minutes away to Vimy to the south. Many thousands of Scottish soldiers served (and died) near Mérignies in both WW1 and WW2. The cemetery in Mérignies is designated as a Commonwealth War Graves cemetery with nine British soldiers buried there, killed during a rear-guard action defending the retreat to Dunkirk in 1940. The village has excellent municipal sports and social facilities, a handful of shops, but a number of large supermarkets within easy driving distance. Some 10 km away is a branch of Auchan- apparently the largest hypermarket in France. It is huge - and a great place to buy wine. Mérignies resembles Kilmacolm in a number of ways, with leafy roads, attractive countryside surrounding the village, a cycle track, mostly attractive detached housing with large gardens, two fishing ponds and a large municipal pond with park and fishing too. There is a small municipal campsite. There are two golf courses in close proximity, one next to Mérignies. As regards cycling there is a major annual road-race held in July, and this year the Tour de France came through Mérignies. There are a number of cycle routes marked. The population of Mérignies, and the north in general, are well-known for their friendly, fun-loving and welcoming manner, and speak a dialect known as “Chti”, and are known by that name. Many speak either good or very good English, but tend to be rather modest about their proficiency in English. The community has an excellent orchestra and choir, and many, many other associations and clubs, including a very large seniors club. With this is mind, the steering committee has been cordially invited to send a party to Merignies and would like to establish if there would be sufficient interest to fill a coach travelling in June 2015. We propose a 6 day/5 night trip by luxury coach with 2 nights’ dinner, bed and breakfast on the overnight Newcastle-Amsterdam ferry. As I write this piece I have just returned from the Referendum count. Inverclyde was more or less a draw, but the massive turnout in Kilmacolm provided a significant contribution to the result. I was delighted with the outcome of the National decision, but either way I was content for “life to go on”, echoing the sentiments of all our Churches. There is a new ‘dug’ at the Old Kirk Manse. A Dalmation pup called Mungo, now seen regularly in the village. Its name derives from the 6th century meeting of Columba, Mirrin and Mungo, all future Saints, on the banks of the Gill Burn adjacent to the current Old Kirk. I spoke at the Inverclyde Macular Society and was accompanied by officers from SPT who gave information on MyBus. This service is well used by constituents in Kilmacolm and Quarriers, it provides a door to door free service for passengers with mobility difficulties. For enquiries or new registrations call 0845 128 4025. There are over 500,000 MyBus journeys per annum, with some 40,000 passenger trips by clients in wheelchairs. I sponsored Colourful Kilmacolm’s successful application to Inverclyde Councils Grants Committee, chaired by my colleague Councillor McColgan, which will provide financial support for the next 3 years. The lead, given by Bridge of Weir, has encouraged volunteers to brighten up our village centre and Birkmyre Park. In my Depute Provost role, I have attended the Installation of the new Sherriff at the Court in Greenock. I am pleased to say it is the first time I have been inside the building. I must report a failure. The dead bird in Hugh Rose’s shop window is still there in spite of my efforts to have the new owner remove it. Can I recommend that those offended by this gruesome sight avert their eyes when passing! I do hope to have greater success by having the benches presented by the Guides and Scouts on Her Majesty’s Coronation in 1953, removed before the demolition of the Institute. Ardgowan Hospice Thank You The recent house to house and street collection for Ardgowan Hospice amounted to the excellent total of £3,027. Many thanks to everyone for their generous support. This is much appreciated by the Hospice. September was a very busy month with much of my time taken up with the Referendum campaign. In amongst campaigning I had the enjoyable pleasure to attend the 135th Kilmacolm Flower Show in the community centre. The show was awash with vibrant colours and beautiful smells from the numerous floral arrangements. There were also pot plants, planters, vegetables and children’s art works on display, the exhibitors competing for the various trophies. It was a wonderful show. In my column in last month’s edition of The Advertizer, as I have written in previous editions, I warned of still too many speeding motorists driving through Kilmcolm and called on these drivers to abide by speed limits. Sadly following me writing my column there was a car accident on Port Glasgow Road. Thankfully I believe no one was seriously hurt, but it is a reminder that it is important that drivers stay within speed limits. At the recent council Environment and Regeneration committee meeting under an item on capital spending I asked for an update on what was happening about the work to repair the drainage on the rugby pitches at Birkmyre Park. As Advertizer readers may remember, myself and my SNP council group colleagues had committed money to be spent on repairing the drainage on the pitches within our budget plans last February. The council had also agreed funding and in partnership with Birkmyre rugby club and St Columba’s School were to take repairs forward. I was informed that negotiations are still ongoing. As we know, the pitches are often unplayable in winter due to poor drainage and so hopefully the council will commence with the work as soon as possible. My next surgeries in October will be advertised in the local newspaper and through my surgery posters. kilbarchan & lochwinnoch Sempill Clan Gather In Lochwinnoch Homeland
Members of the Sempill Clan have just visited Clyde Muirshiel’s Castle Semple Centre to remember and honour their homeland. The current Lord Jamie Sempill, the 22nd in a historic lineage, was welcomed by fellows Sempills or descendants, staff, local historians and other interested parties. The group of 20, made up of Sempills and Semples (the more recent spelling) alike, made good use of the recently established Semple Trail Heritage Path. There was a symbolic raising of the family flag outside Castle Semple Visitor Centre. Some had come from as far afield as America, the Netherlands, Denmark and just across the water in Ireland. Their first destination was the Collegiate Church where the first Lord Sempill, John, lies buried having fallen at the battle of Flodden in 1513. They then went to the Castle Semple Grotto in Parkhill Woods to further tour their ancestral homeland. The Grotto, albeit it a recreation of the original, was used as a sort of hunting lodge and is one of the only remnants still visible of the Castle’s then hunting e s t a t e . The Castle S e m p l e itself was knocked down when the land was sold to the MacDowell family in the 18th century. Local Semple enthusiast and retired Countryside Ranger at Clyde Muirshiel, Len Howcutt, was there to greet and accompany the guests, some of them exploring the area for the first time. Back at the Visitor Centre Len joined the group to look at the ‘Estate Map of 1785’, family history panels and discuss the area’s history and folklore surrounding their ancestors. They also participated in the medieval sport of archery, replicating the recreation of the time while enjoying afternoon tea provided by Regional Park staff. The Semple Trail Heritage Project aims to improve access and interpretation of the 12km route, passing landmarks and gives spectacular views of the area. Following an approach from members of the Scottish Youth Parliament seeking help for young carers, I fully supported their request to the Scottish Government for a Scotland wide free travel card scheme for this remarkable group of young people. The job they do in caring for family members cannot be over estimated. By the same token, Renfrewshire’s young carers need to have the same opportunities for contact with friends and for social and leisure pursuits, which can often be restricted by their caring responsibilities. It is therefore bitterly disappointing that this request has been rejected and I urge the Scottish Government to reconsider its decision. On a happier note, Renfrewshire Council’s local area committee provides support to many organisations in Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch who do so much to enrich village life. At the summer meetings of the committee, Kilbarchan Singers, Kilbarchan Community Nursery, Lochwinnoch Art Group and Calder Drama Club, were among the organisations to receive grants, all of which I fully supported. At the September meeting of Lochwinnoch Community Council, there was a lengthy discussion on the proposed transfer of the post office to the Spar. The meeting was attended by a regional representative from the post office, who was questioned vigorously on the issue of the public consultation and on many of the potential consequences of the proposed move. The village hopes to have these answers soon. Finally, thank you to those constituents who have contacted me welcoming the improvements from the A737 exit to Kilbarchan. Some residents were initially sceptical about the work undertaken, but have been kind enough to write to me acknowledging the improvements to the visual appearance and their contribution to traffic safety. A little bit of rural history In early September the field between Glentyan Avenue and Mountpleasant, Kilbarchan, was ploughed, harrowed and fertilised. It is locally reported that this is the first time this has happened since 1950. It’s good to see some care being taken of the land.

The Old Library, Kilbarchan It is said that lightening doesn’t strike twice. The voluntary team at The Old Library Centre feel as if it does. Twice in two weeks the lead has been stripped off the roof. Nobody heard the thieves or saw anything, not even the blue bin being removed. The bin rubbish was emptied onto the grass beside The Guide Centre. It is thought it had been used to carry the stolen lead. The empty bin was eventually found on the Sustran track at Barrhill Crescent. That is the bad news. The good news is that computer classes are being offered on Wednesday and Thursday mornings. Starting at 10am until 12noon these classes are under the tuition of David Crawford and Rosemary Doyle who are tutors from West College Scotland. Places are limited to 12 for each class. Kilbarchan Pipe Band Kilbarchan Pipe Band originally formed from the Local Home Guard in WW11 and it folded in the Mid Seventies. The present band restarted in 2002 after an advert in the local paper attracted several pipers and drummers. Initially, we cut our teeth at local gala days and fetes and have now become regular competitors at highland gatherings across Scotland. We have a complement of over 40 playing members many of them children and young adults and we continue to attract new members. 2014 has seen Kilbarchan Pipe Band grow in numbers and confidence. From our first outing at ADG Solos and Full Band Indoor competition in Sanquhar to the World Pipe Band Championships at Glasgow Green. We have qualified at Grade 4B for the British and European championship finals, gained 3rd place at Helensburgh Games with Best Corps of Drums and 2 trophies at Cowal Games. We have played in Grade 4 MSR and Grade 3 for the first time. Unthinkable 12 months ago! The Band continues to work within the local community supplying instruments and a tutor to the local primary school and we also teach child and adult learners on band nights to help nurture a vibrant traditional music culture within the village. We provide bands and mini bands for a range of community galas and fetes with Lilias Day being our biggest day of the year. We played at gala days and for 9 cruise ships at Clydeport, Greenock this summer and look forward to our winter duties at Remembrance Day, The Tree of Hope at Erskine Hospital and the switch on of the Christmas lights in Kilbarchan. In 2011 the band were invited to Albert, France for the 95th commemoration of the first day of the Battle of the Somme. We now have the honour of being invited back and are currently fundraising in order to take the full band to France in 2016 for the centennial remembrance. As one part of this fundraising exercise we are holding a Coffee Morning (with stalls) on Saturday 29th November in the Guiding Centre, Kilbarchan from 10am – 12noon, entry £2.50. Please come along and support us.
howwood & elderslie The three main Unionist parties have promised extra powers for the Scottish Parliament and I hope that some of that power is passed on to local councils. What was great about the campaign was the number of people who got involved in politics particularly young people. I would expect that all 16/17 year olds get the vote in all future elections. It is at this time of year that councillors start looking at the council budget for next year. I know there will have to be some difficult decisions but as ever we will be making the protection of front line services our priority.
I would like to pay tribute to the way in which the independence referendum process has rejuvenated Scottish democracy by encouraging a popular interest in politics. This bodes well for the health of Scottish politics in the future. Following months of negotiation with council officers and discussion with local residents, I am very pleased that the new Driver Feedback Sign at the top of Shuttle Street has now been installed. This is permanent and will replace the former sign which was nearly at Kilbarchan Cross and too far down Shuttle Street to be an effective deterrent to speeding vehicles. I have also had very positive comment from Habbies in Loom Walk and Taylor Avenue as well regarding the introduction of the sign. To me this should not be the end, but only the beginning of measures to slow down traffic in Kilbarchan.
The issue of speeding through Howwood has arisen again. The police have assured the community they will be monitoring the situation. I would hope some action will be taken as some drivers do drive through the village as excessive speeds. Meet in Howwood Village Hall at 7.30pm

My petition against the closure of the Royal Bank of Scotland in Lochwinnoch has gathered several hundred signatures and is still gaining support. It is available in most village shops and businesses and I would urge villagers to sign as it will show RBS management the strength of opposition and real anger that truly exists in Lochwinnoch to the closure of their branch. I have written to RBS management and proposed that as they were not keen to come to the last community council meeting that they meet the three Lochwinnoch Cllrs, and a small delegation from the Community Council, that is the very least they should do to explain themselves. My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7.45pm, and my advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm, excluding July. houston, crosslee & brookfield 1st Houston Boys’ Brigade On Saturday 6th September, 1st Houston BB Parents & Friends Association held their annual coffee morning in the church halls. The event was very successful with folks enjoying a wonderful array of homebaking in the tearoom as well as delicious breakfast rolls & sausage. Thanks to McHargs Bakery for donating rolls, to Robert Alexander Butchers for donating the sausage and to Houston Paper Shop for tuck shop items. The small hall had a variety of craft and fun stalls to suit all tastes. The lucky winners on the day were Rachel Baird on the 100 square game and Kathryn McCartney won the birthday bear. The spectacular sum of over £2,100 was raised and our thanks are extended to all who volunteered their time and baking skills. Thanks must also go to those who attended and to the very smartly turned out BB boys who capably manned the stalls and the tearoom.
Commonwealth Games Volunteers I had the pleasure of working with Alan Marshall from Houston, for four weeks during the Commonwealth Games. We both worked with Team Scotland in ‘the village’ (coincidently we were both Baton Bearers in Renfrewshire on the same day as well, Alan in Houston and myself in Lochwinnoch). We also were given the opportunity to lead Team Scotland through the village and up into the tunnel at Parkhead for their appearance at the Opening Ceremony (see photo right). What a night! I’d just like to say thanks to Alan and to his wife who, on a couple of occasions, gave me a run home to Lochwinnoch during the games.

Free Support Event In Glasgow For People With Type 2 Diabetes Diabetes UK will run one of a national series of free educational events to provide expert advice and information for people recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in Glasgow in October. The ‘Living with Diabetes Day’ will be held at the Glasgow Hilton on 6th October. The events are being held at 80 locations across the UK and it is expected that 10,000 people with Type 2 diabetes will attend them over the next two years. The one-day events are aimed at helping people who have been diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes in the last few years and to provide them with essential information they need to live well with condition. People who have been living with Type 2 diabetes for longer but need to brush up on their knowledge of the condition are also welcome to attend. Type 2 diabetes is a serious, lifelong condition which can be treated with diet, exercise, medication and/or insulin. Healthcare professionals will provide information on local healthcare and the services available to people with Type 2 diabetes in the area. They will also advise on avoiding health complications associated with diabetes, such as heart disease, kidney failure, stroke, amputation and blindness, through good management of the condition. Experts will give workshops on the practical elements of living with Type 2 diabetes, such as diet, exercise, medication, travel and driving. Diaporama It’s great to be back. Our first session was sorting out the winter programme which looks varied and exciting. We then spent the rest of the evening looking at shows in progress. We visited Alhambra Granada with its beautiful gardens, Paris by Night and the Commonwealth Games with ‘ Rhythmic Gymnastics’. We had a sequence of the ‘Red Arrows’ and the air show at Waddington. We looked at a beautiful ‘Nature Notebook’ with images of flowers, birds, butterflies all presented as a book with animated page turning. Technology has changed so much since photography began and now we have ‘wide screen’ so David documented the changes in ‘New Size’ - a bit of nostalgia for a lot of us!. Hugh demonstrated the interesting possibilities available of using video in AV - to be continued... Bridge Of Weir Horticultural Soc.
The Horticultural Society’s Flower Show was held on the last Saturday in August. After early clouds cleared, it became a sunny day with a brisk wind. As the heavy showers on the Friday had been predicted in earlier forecasts, gardeners had been able to cut show items before any damage could be done. The herbaceous borders provided a wonderful range of colours, shapes and sizes and the perfume from the sweet peas wafted deliciously around the hall. As we saw, it has been a very good year for sweet peas. After the wonderful summer, many fruits and vegetables were worthy not just of the village show but a bench at Chelsea, so it was no surprise that the Neil Ferrier Cup for the overall Best Exhibit in the Show was awarded to Mr Alec Inglis for his magnificent onions and other equally impressive vegetables. The Society Trophy for the Best Exhibit in the Show for the Children’s Section was won by Miss Abigail Sandham for her ambitious interpretation of a Person or Animal made from flowers, fruit or veg. Mr George Meikle, Chairman of the Royal British Legion in Bridge of Weir, was the guest of honour. He welcomed everyone to the Legion and pointed out that the hall is a great venue for all community events. His committee are pleased that the Horticultural Society is a frequent user of the Legion’s facilities and reminded everyone that it is there for villagers to use for functions and gatherings. He had also observed, first hand, just how much work is put in by members of the Society to get the Show ready before the doors open to the public. September is expected to give us another burst of warm and sunny weather, but there is a packed winter syllabus ready for the autumn meetings when we meet again at the British Legion. We will meet on Thursday 9th October at 8pm when the first speaker for the new season will be Dr Jennifer Miller. We look forward with great interest to her forensic glimpse of “Plants, People, Places”.

Off The Wall
Well it’s been a very busy summer for the West of Scotland Drystone Wallers following our successful visit to the Gardening Scotland Show. Two beginners training courses at Kilbarchan in June & September introduced 35 new members of the public to the art & fun of drystone walling. For once the weather was kind and stayed dry. In fact the September course was almost too warm! The courses lead to 4 new members joining the Association to take their skills to a higher level. Following on from Gardening Scotland, the award winning memorial garden was rebuilt at Erskine Hospital. The size of the garden was increased to allow easy access for wheelchairs around the central water feature which also meant a change in the planting scheme. The whole project was finished early in August and the Garden was formally opened on 18th August by actress Juliette Mills and her husband Max Caulfield who were appearing in “Stars on Parade” in support of Erskine Hospital. Also appearing at the opening were Pony Major Corporal Mark Wilkinson and the mascot of the Royal Regiment of Scotland “Lance Corporal Cruachan III”. While Max & Juliette chatted to the many visitors and hospital veterans, L/C Cruachan availed himself of the facilities in the garden with a well earned nibble of the turf and a drink from the water feature. The Memorial Garden will join the Scottish Thistle walls constructed a few years ago as part of the Remembrance Walk being constructed in the Hospital grounds. In addition to this major project, the Wallers also constructed a stone wildlife & “Bug Hotel” for the RSPB in the grounds of the Glasgow Botanic Gardens, and are working with the Dalmally community council to build a stone seat in the new Community Wildlife Garden on the banks of the river Orchy. Further projects will include another golf course drystone bridge, this time at Kirkintilloch. These are becoming very popular now; maybe a local golf course would be interested in a collaboration? In between all this hard work 3 of our members successfully passed their Intermediate Assessment tests for professional wallers at our test site in Kilsyth. Ideas are now being canvassed for projects for 2015. The Windows on Wildlife Project aims to bring people closer to wildlife, gaining a unique insight to the furry & feathered inhabitants of Castle Semple Country Park. Project Officer Hayley Douglas gives us an update.
Project updates
The Windows on Wildlife Project celebrates its second birthday in October. I can’t quite believe it. Since the start of the project I have worked with over 1500 school children, delivered talks and events to over 2100 people and collected over 500 hours of footage of the badgers, otters, foxes and many other animals that inhabit the local area. WoW indeed! So thank you to all who have attended events, asked questions and watched the footage. Watch this space to see what the future brings.
Wildlife News
Well there has been a bit of a baby boom since the last issue. We have a set of roe deer twins on camera and a trio of otter cubs. The roe deer twins have been named Bracken and Foxglove by Isabel Wylie Robinson who took part in a poll on ‘The Riverside Show’. They are growing well and have started to lose their spots which keeps them camouflaged. The appearance of the otter cubs is great news as there haven’t been any cubs in the areas since 2012. Again can I please remind drivers to watch out for otters on the road between the village and RSPB and if you see any otters on the road or out and about on the lochs can you please let me know. Have you seen the Windows on Wildlife Project on STV Glasgow? As well as showing the footage collected by the project I have been discussing issues such as deer poaching and hedgehog decline. Kilmacolm Horticultural Society
The Winter Lecture on 15th October will be very special indeed to mark the 135th anniversary of the Society. Jane Gordon a highly respected member of the Scottish Association of Flower Arrangers is coming to the New Community Centre, Kilmacolm at 7.30pm to demonstrate her artistic skills for which she has received gold medals at Chelsea, Harrogate and Ayr. Her talk is entitled ‘A Spirit of Adventure’. We will hold a raffle to defray expenses, and hope you will join us for refreshments after the flower demonstration. At the Kilmacolm Flower Show, children from Kilmacolm Primary School entered the Picture Gallery entitled ‘Party Time in the Garden’. PETS news Pet Fit Club Unfortunately obesity is an increasing problem we see in pets which has significant health implications including poor quality of life and reduced life expectancy. It occurs when the energy intake is greater than the energy expenditure. • Animals with a bodyweight 10-20% greater than their ideal weight are classified as overweight. • Animals with a bodyweight greater than 20% above their ideal weight are classified as obese. Factors contributing to weight gain, include overfeeding, feeding an inappropriate diet for e.g., feeding human foods or excessive treats, and insufficient exercise. Neutering can also be a factor in weight gain as animals that have been neutered require around 30% less calories than those that have not been neutered.
Pets At Home Fun Day Pets at home in Abbotsinch paisley recently had a fun day, when kids could come along and meet a new furry friend. It was a fabulous day, and kids came in their droves to meet new friends. They got to hear about how to look after a new pet and learned how to handle them.
The store manager Martin Senior said “It was a great opportunity and the kids loved it. The Royalheart Greyhound Rescue based in Langbank came along with some of the hounds, and kids also got to meet a hound and enjoy a cuddle”. Parents could also donate to the Greyhound rescue and they raised over £300 in donations to help these wonderful dogs.
Some health problems can be directly linked to obesity or have a higher incidence in obese animals including, respiratory problems, arthritis and diabetes. For an animal to lose weight it is necessary to increase the energy expenditure and decrease the energy intake. Increasing the energy expenditure is achieved by increasing the amount of exercise. In dogs this can be done by increasing the number and/ or the length of walks. In obese dogs, especially those with other associated health problems such as arthritis, this can be difficult initially as they are less willing and able to exercise. It can be achieved by giving multiple short, regular walks rather than a small number of long walks. In cats increasing exercise is achieved mainly through play. Decreasing energy intake is achieved by reducing the number of calories the animal is consuming. This means sticking to a recommended diet and not feeding human food leftovers or treats. If owners are unable to cut out treats completely they can be replaced with healthier alternatives for example small slices of apple or carrot which are lower in calories. SCHOOLS news Bridge of Weir Primary This term we have welcomed 60 bright-eyed P1s into the fold, with most fully into the swing of things. According to Lily, “In P1 you’re quite lucky because you just have to say ‘Please can you say that slower?’ to your teacher and they do!” For many, starting school has been a much-anticipated event, “…it took me a long time to get here!” exclaimed Cormac. Lily and Cormac were very enthusiastic about their trip to the RSPB in Lochwinnoch to see mini-beasts up close. Topic work has also been set in context for P3, who enjoyed all things Ancient Egypt on a recent trip to Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. As part of their work on WW1, P6 pupils headed off to the People’s Palace. “The fighting didn’t just happen overseas,” said Erin, “it happened at home too.” Meanwhile P7 students explored renewable energy and windpower at Whitelee Windfarm. Gregor particularly enjoyed “doing experiments in the lab and seeing the turbines up close – they’re actually very big! “ Threaded through everything the school is doing is our new Health & Wellbeing programme “BounceBack!”, designed to enhance young people’s sense of wellbeing and resilience. “Friday Fun”, our new take on Golden Time, has already been very well received. We are delighted to celebrate the sporting achievements of Cameron, Erin, Jessica, Aimee, Andrew, Rory, Ruari and Murray, who came first in the hockey tournament at the Renfrewshire Primary Games in June, and to Grant who was the Renfrewshire runner-up in the Badminton Tournament. Our friendly Parent Council is next due to meet upstairs in Amaretto at 7pm on Wednesday, 1st October, and new faces are very welcome. Kilbarchan Primary Many congratulations to Mrs Littleson who won the National Kelpies Book Prize! Her book “The Mixed Up Summer of Lily McLean” will now be published and in book shops soon. We are all very proud of her at Kilbarchan Primary, and are also very excited to have a real author as a teacher in our school! Anti Bullying Week To start the new school session, we had an anti-bullying focus week with activities for staff and pupils at all stages. The aims of this focus week were to raise awareness about bullying and to work together to develop assertiveness skills to create a safe and secure learning environment for all pupils. In addition to the special focus week, other activities will take place in school throughout the year. This will help to raise awareness of bullying and help pupils to communicate effectively in conflict situations. The Circle Time approach, used weekly, is one method which is used to discuss anxieties/problems in a secure environment. Eco Drama - Worm Inspectors On Wednesday 27th August the “Magic Van” with a team from Eco Drama group, supported by LEAP, came to our school. We saw the eco-friendly show “Worm Inspectors”. The show inspires people to “make less waste in the first place”. They gave us our very own wormery food bin for lunch times. Andrew in P3 said, “I learned that the biggest worms live in the desert and the show was very good.” Poppy and Lydia in P7 said, “It was educational and the whole upper school enjoyed it!” The younger pupils saw a show called “The Worm” earlier in the week, all about worms and composting. Kilbarchan Community Nursery On 19th September the nursery marked it’s 30th anniversary with a ‘Birthday bash’. There was an impressive turnout of friends old and new, former parents, staff and committee as well as present day parents, children and staff. Everyone enjoyed looking round the nursery, seeing the old photographs, having a catch up and enjoying a buffet kindly provided by Mairi’s mum. We were privileged to have one of the nursery’s founders, Joyce McCallum as guest of honour, who told us all about starting the nursery 30 years ago to fill a need in the village. Joyce then cut the cake, made by new parent and committee member Victoria. Thanks again to all who attended and to the committee who decorated the nursery and helped to make it a memorable evening.
Abbey Nursery Beth Morris and her team at Abbey Nursery have been celebrating recently when the nursery received an Award from Daynurseries. This organisation provides a valuable service for parents when researching childcare options and Abbey was voted 10th out of 707 nurseries in Scotland and this recognition will now be recognised on the Daynurseries website. The Award is based on personal recommendations and we are very proud that Parents took the time to pass on their thoughts – thank you for this vote of confidence. Meanwhile, with our feet firmly on the ground, it has been business as usual with lots of exciting activities for the children. The Busy Bunnies have been saying goodbye to the butterflies they gave a home to in the playroom and were delighted so many of them lived to fly off in the warmer weather. In the Little Ladybirds playroom the children are still captivated with the new sensory room and enjoy the intimacy of the smaller space to play together. The projector provides moving backdrops from ‘at the farm’ to ‘under the sea’ and children take great delight on trying to ‘catch’ these images. Citizenship is high on the agenda for our Grasshoppers who have been preparing for our second Eco Schools Green Flag inspection as well as collecting clothes to recycle for Mary’s Meals charity. The fine weather has also helped with regular outings to the local woods and a great deal of exploring and gathering of such a variety of ‘treasures’ to bring back to the nursery.
Commemorating the First World War at St Benedict’s Commemorations to mark the centenary of the First World War kicked off with a bang at St Benedict’s High School on Thursday 4th September, when young historians and students of English were lucky enough to watch a production by the Quantum Theatre group, aptly named “Your Country Needs You.” The theatre group used primary sources from the period of The Great War, including songs such as “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary”, prose pieces and poetry to create a realistic, evocative and poignant tribute to the First World War. During the event, the school raised over £300 for Erskine Hospital a fund which is very close to the school’s heart, as in the previous years’ commemorations of Armistice Day, St Benedict’s has been lucky enough to have veterans from the hospital visit the school to work with the pupils, sharing their experiences of war.

Kilmacolm Primary School We have had a busy start to our new session where we welcomed 29 children into our P1 classes. We wish them every success as they begin their school career. Here is just a flavour of the learning taking place in our school. P1 and P1/2 are learning about people who help us and hoping to have lots of visits from the Emergency Services. Our P4 class embarked on a trip to the seaside. They discovered lots of treasures on Lunderston Bay. The sun shone beautifully and they are now ready to tackle their novel study – A Gift from Winklesea. We also celebrated Dahlicious Day by focusing on literacy, particularly Roald Dahl books and stories. The boys and girls dressed up as their favourite characters and as well as enjoying and learning about story writing they also raised funds for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. The imaginative and colourful costumes certainly brightened up our day! We are now looking forward to our Fairtrade coffee afternoon in aid of McMillan Cancer Care. P6 and 7 worked hard to organise the event which will took place on Friday 19th September. Parents, Pupils and the school community were challenged to enter our Fairtrade cake show stopper challenge.

St Columba’s School Pupils help Scotland win Gold at UK Games
Ellie Halliday (SVI), Chloe Hardy (SVI) and Maddie Cleat (SIV) were selected to play hockey for Scotland in the Sainsbury’s 2014 School Games, a multi-sport event which took place in Manchester. The Scottish team beat two of the English team to go through to the final with Ulster. They took Gold with a score of 4-3. Ellie who captained the Scottish team said, “As the underdogs it was especially exciting to win gold. The team really came together both on and off the pitch.” The Rector of St Columba’s, Mr David Girdwood, said, ”To have three out of sixteen players in the team is a reason to be very proud. I’d like to congratulate Ellie in particular on her captaining of the team.”
This year our P7 class demonstrated their responsible attitudes by holding an election to elect our House Captains. Following persuasive arguments and a vote, our House Captains are as follows: Mark Gammon, Gregor Hewitt, Laurie Struthers and Janie Poppy Stewart. P6 and 7 will be embarking on a magical secret journey aboard the ‘Unsinkable Ship’. This secretive project will be an adventure they will never forget. P3 and P3/2 are enjoying being back at school and are having great fun exploring their ECO weather topic. ‘I’m a P5 Get me Out of Here!’ has hit our screens. P5 will be exploring the Rainforest, undertaking many challenges along the way. P5 are also responsible for our Rag Bag initiative which encourages our school community to recycle.
Woodlands Day Nursery Our babies have had great fun out in our extensive gardens, searching for crisp Autumn leaves and pine cones to make very creative pictures. We have gone through lots of yellow, orange, red, brown and gold paint as we made leaf prints, string pictures and even a Woodlands tree from handprints for our wall. We have explored the leaves using our senses, listening to them crunch, feeling their rough textures and looking at all their wonderful colours. We are now patiently waiting on some rain for splashing in muddy puddles just like our favourite television character Peppa Pig. The Tweenies were learning about Harvest Time and have been baking their own bread, exploring textures of oats and barley and discovering how to change corn kernels into popcorn which they thoroughly enjoyed. We recently held a successful Information Evening for their parents who just wanted a little more insight into their children’s learning and daily routine. Mums and dads seemed amused by the wide range of activities available whilst the dads especially, enjoyed exploring some messy play such as Gloop and Moon Sand. Rising 5’s children have been covering topics such as Golden Rules, All About Me and continuing their learning outdoors as we approach Autumn The children are witnessing the change in their local environment as they explore the woods collecting an assortment of fallen leaves, chestnuts, acorns and pine cones which they use to express their creativity in collage pictures and also matching, counting and sorting activities. The Out of School Care children were also drawn into the major topic of Scotland last month by joining in on the Referendum by making a ballot box, voting and having a debate about Scottish Independence. The younger children were practicing new skills by knitting squares to make blankets for babies with the help of Christine and one of the children’s granny’s They have been learning about the changing environment due to the seasons and taking advantage the arrival of Autumn by creating wonderful Autumn collages using hand prints and leaf rubbings Eco School is in full swing with children discussing ideas for planting and recycling.

Following Kilmacolm’s twinning with Mériginies, a small village in France, the SIV French class are hoping to connect with pupils from a school in the region. They made posters detailing their personalities and hobbies to help find a compatible French ‘e-pal’ and look forward to hearing from them soon.

Strawberry Field Nursery Rainbow Building
The children are starting to learn about autumn and are enjoying playing in the leaves wearing our welly boots. We will be going on lots of walks to see how nature changes and collect some leaves to make pictures. Our outdoor area has been developed incorporating a mud garden and we are spending as much time as possible in our garden. The babies have been busy doing a variety of collage pictures and also enjoying playing outside.
Bright stars building
The 3-5 children have been planning for our new topic ‘’Bears’’. They found a set of muddy paw prints leading out to the garden, which sparked map making, letter writing and an exciting bear hunt! We are continuing to develop our outdoor facilities and have had a member of staff that has attended a 3 day course on forest kindergarten. The children have been enjoying our new rope swing and have now created an outdoor music making centre. As we move into autumn we will be making an outdoor bear cave as part of our topic, and looking at seasonal changes.

Duchal Nursery School Thank You
Duchal Nursery School, in Kilmacolm, was established in 1968, and has been run as a parents’ co-operative ever since. Throughout its existence parents and friends of pupils have raised funds and made donations to give their children the best start in life with great facilities and opportunities. In November 2008, we were very privileged to move into our purpose built new nursery building at Birkmyre Park, Kilmacolm. We are delighted to announce that in August 2014 we paid off the bank loan arranged to fund the build, due to the generosity of all the friends of Duchal, who have contributed to all the fundraising activities over the years. A heartfelt “thank you” from all the Duchal children, past and present, to everyone who has helped over the years towards creating such an amazing nursery facility, it is a wonderful place to have fun and learn. After the long summer break it was wonderful to welcome all the boys and girls to the nursery, the big Blue Teddies are enjoying looking after the new younger Red Teddies and showing them around. We have been learning about colours and opposites including hot and cold using jelly to demonstrate and listening to different music that makes us happy and sad. With a visit from the road safety officer we are learning about safety in the home, the garden and outside in the park and near the roads. The older children had a fantastic trip to visit the real Peter’s Railway, courtesy of local author Christopher Vine, (www. petersrailway.com) where we saw how a steam engine worked, felt the steam that gradually got hotter the closer to the engine we got. The exhilaration on the children’s faces as they had rides on the miniature railway was wonderful to see. Langbank Playgroup Here’s something you might not like to try at home! Playgroup is a great opportunity to get messy and to try something different with shaving foam being an interesting change from playdough but still a great way to practise fine-motor skills by creating circles, smiley faces, spiky hair etc which all help with early writing and concentration skills. Plus we have a fantastic collection of jigsaws for those who like a challenge! We have lots of interesting activities and events lined up for this term including a trip to the fire station, our usual Gymnastic sessions plus of course meeting up with our friends at Langbank Primary so lots of adventures on a Friday morning. Chef’s Visit To Gryffe Health and Food Technology Department (HFT)
A fifth year HFT class recently had a special visit from professional chef Brian Maule. Mr Maule very kindly took time out of his busy schedule to visit Gryffe High. Mr Maule was visiting to teach the pupils culinary knife skills as part of the National 5 course. He demonstrated using a wide range of vegetables such as carrots, leeks and onions. The main focus of the class was to teach students specific cutting techniques. One was the Julienne, a way of cutting vegetables into very thin strips. Another was dicing the vegetables into minuscule squares, a method known as Brunoise. Cutting food into the shape of batons is known as Jardiniere. The Macédoine was dicing vegetables into slightly larger chunks than the Brunoise. Finally the Paysanne was a method for cutting vegetables into round, triangle and square shapes. Some pupils commented on how much they enjoyed the class, saying it was interesting and would be useful when preparing food. The HFT department were very grateful that Mr Maule gave up his time to give the demonstration, and were glad that the event was a success. Article - Molly Speir. SPORTS news End Of Season Approaches For Golf Orders Of Merit Renfrewshire Golf Union has announced the winners of the Junior Orders of Merit now that all the qualifying junior tournaments have been played. Colin Edgar from Cochrane Castle Golf Club has led the table since the beginning of the season when he collected double points at the Junior County Stroke Play at Caldwell with a two round aggregate of 145. Fereneze’s Josh Beatt put up a good fight, but Colin went on to win the open events at Renfrew (71), Port Glasgow (72), Caldwell (70), Elderslie (71) and a great round of 67 at the Paisley event. The final points were Colin Edgar 930 and Josh Beatt 776. A great season for Colin in Renfrewshire. In the under 15 category, Angus Frood of Ranfurly Castle dominated the table after a slow start with wins at Paisley (74), Gourock (77), Fereneze (74), Whinhill (76) and Greenock (74). This was a very consistent performance from the youngster and he amassed 887.5 points, a long way from his nearest rival Ciaran O’Brien (Old Course Ranfurly) on 425 points.
Craig Watson Does It Again
When Renfrewshire’s top golfers lined up at Renfrew Golf Club for the final event of the season, the Herbie Pirie Trophy, there was still a mathematical possibility that former British Amateur Champion, Craig Watson from the East Renfrewshire club, could be overtaken in the race for the top of the Order of Merit. Craig led the table with 622.5 points with Renfrew’s Craig Pirie a long way back on 482.5. However, with double points available at the event, Renfrewshire Golf Union President, Andrew Anderson, who does all the mathematical work, advised that Pirie, a relative youngster, still had an outside chance with 300 points on offer for the winner.

After the morning round, young Craig recorded a solid 74 with Watson three shots behind on 77. Could Pirie hold on for a win which would mean that Watson would have to be, at least, in sixth place to tie for the top spot? As it transpired, William MacMillan from Bonnyton intervened to halt Craig Pirie in his tracks. While Pirie repeated his morning round for an aggregate of 148, MacMillan pushed him into second place adding a great round of 67 to his morning effort of 76 for a 143 total.
With 250 points in the bag for second, Craig Pirie had to wait to see if Watson could make it to the top ten which he needed to clinch the Blake Clark Trophy. It came as no surprise when the experienced Watson handed in a second round 74 for a share of fourth spot and more than sufficient points to ensure that his name went on the trophy.

Ranfurly Castle Golf Club On 31st August it was Club Championship Finals day for Ranfurly Castle. The men’s final was competed for over 36 holes by Gregor Munro (pictured far left) and Conor Toal. Spinal Injuries Scotland Launch New Watersports Project Spinal Injuries Scotland (SIS) have been successful in securing funding from Celebrate at the Big Lottery, part of the funding to celebrate Glasgow 2014. The funds are to be used to design tailor-made coaching programmes in sailing and other outdoor activities for their clients at Clyde Muirshiel’s Castle Semple Centre in Lochwinnoch. The programme was launched by Paralympic Bronze Medallist in wheelchair curling Angie Malone on Friday 15th August at Castle Semple, Scotland’s first Centre of Excellence for disability sailing. Guests were treated to a variety of taster sessions in new adaptive equipment, given the opportunity to speak to our experienced Instructor Team and took part in some activities alongside the service users themselves. These included not just sailing, but also kayaking, canoeing and power boating. John Clark, Chair of Spinal Injuries Scotland, said: “Glasgow 2014 was a wonderful showcase of sport and inclusion with the integration of the ParaSport in the programme one of its defining successes. This funding means the people we support can have

Ranfurly Castle Ladies On Monday 8th September, 42 ladies gathered to celebrate 125 years of Ranfurly Castle Golf Club. A competition was organised by Jan MacNab and Lilias Snodgrass in which each of the 18 holes were reduced to 125 yards. With tees placed in unusual spots, a great deal of fun was had by all!

The overall winner was Anne Judge, (pictured above in black), but there were many more novelty winners with the prizes all having a link to 125. I’m sure the winner of 125 tees will remember the day for quite a long time!! Everyone enjoyed a celebration lunch in the Golf Club after the game.
This is the latest event in a line of successes for Clyde Muirshiel Park Authority and follows on from the pre commonwealth games Glasgow 2014 legacy event ‘Race 2 the games’ held on the River Clyde On July 2nd. This involved children from local special schools and adults from local disability organisations racing in accessible Hansa 303 sailing dinghies 33km from Greenock to Glasgow. It is hoped the legacy of this event and programmes of tuition associated with it will continue to inspire all of those involved and in time produce a Paralympic star competitor in the future.

Legacy activities coming up at Clyde Muirshiel include a Hansa 303 Class Sailing Academy in September and the Scottish Multiclass Sailing Regatta in June next year. Charity football match This friendly footie match was organised by William Milroy and Kevin McLaughlin, and all the proceeds were given to St Vincent’s Hospice in Howwood. It was a fabulous day, and so far the match has raised around £5000 for this wonderful hospice. The Just giving page remains open until 12th October for people to donate to this wonderful cause. Many ex-pro’s turned up to this match, and showed their talents on the footie ground. It was a wonderful day, with kids castles and many fun things. Kids also loved to meet the pro’s and have their photos taken.

Castle Semple Sailing Club Topper Team Racing Sunday 24th August was a great sunny afternoon. Many thanks to Peter for organising us all so well. The forecast for wind was not great and it certainly wasn’t worth starting at 12noon so we delayed for lunch and a light breeze did appear around 1pm. We managed to rustle up five teams of 2 and the competitive spirit certainly took over with plenty of shouts of “protest” and numerous penalties being taken with two people ending up in the water twice - Angus no less (seemingly handling a topper against enthusiastic young cadets was too much for him!) and Katy W. The cadets Niall, Hector and Ross Mc G, all in different teams, proved to be formidable opponents, obviously Duncan has been teaching them well. Arthur apparently had some sort of an encounter with a stray canoe at one point no doubt he will explain to any willing listener in due course. We even managed to have quite a number of spectators - ring side seats were at a premium due to the applauding from opposing teams on the pontoon and shouts from the water. Jon and Niall were the eventual winners, with Ross McG receiving a prize for being in the most teams (usual CSSC tactic - he’s learning young!) and Angus for the best capsize (off the pontoon ha ha!). Have to mention that even though he didn’t take part Crawford received a drenching not of his own volition either. I am sure there will be a retaliation at some point, someone had better watch out! Many thanks to Duncan and Alan F for starting us off on each race. It was mentioned that never had so many people been seen out in the rescue/ committee boat before - all vying for a birds eye view of the action. Hopefully we will repeat this event next year.

The fact is, building muscle is hard work, and it doesn’t come easy to a huge amount of people. Many men struggle for years to build solid muscular tissue and this struggle is compounded more so in females; as females’ have 10x less testosterone than men, (a key muscle building hormone). You also need a calorie surplus when looking to gain muscle, so you need to eat more than your body normally needs to stimulate new muscle growth. It is rare for a female to increase calories if they are health conscious and trying to improve their body composition.

Muscle creates shape and many women want more shape, firm legs, or toned arms, and to create the ideal body, weight training is actually an essential path to creating that ‘look’. Weights, often heavy weights, need to be lifted to condition the muscles under our fat, and then reduce our fat enough to be able to see it. The elderly are another population put off by the apparent negatives of weight training. Often there is a perception that there is a high injury risk with weight training in a gym, or perceived as being for the ‘young’. Strength in old age becomes important as the body naturally declines in overall function/condition, joint integrity, bone strength and muscle flexibility; lifting weights just once a week can protect against all these issues. Strong bones, muscles and joints will dramatically reduce the risk of injury and comes from being active and resisting your body against heavy objects, such as weight training or other activities.

The first City Team Tennis tournament took place at the Bridge of Allan Tennis Club and was won by Strathgryffe. The Strathgryffe team were Eleanor Cochran, Liam O’Brien, Brodie & Arran Kerr and Carla Ward. The side narrowly edged out Glasgow and Prestwick in the top group. Over 40 children from nine cities including Inverness, Glasgow, Dundee, Stirling, Aberdeen, Prestwick and Carlisle took part in a fantastic day of tennis and the added bonus was a warm up session conducted by Judy Murray, who said: ‘It was a fun day and brilliant to see so many children enjoying tennis.

Gold Medals for Rowing Partners Laura and Katy 16 year old Laura McDonald of Lochwinnoch had an outstanding season in both national and international rowing competition. Along with her partner Katy from Edinburgh they were unbeaten all season in the female under 16 double scull category. Along the way they picked up an impressive haul of gold medals starting off with victory at the Scottish championships in May followed up a few weeks later with a fantastic victory at their main target for the year where they beat 42 other crews through heats and final to win the British National Schools championship. During the course of the same regatta Laura also won a bronze medal in the single scull event which similarly had a field of over 30 competitors. This led to an invitation to trial for team GB which they duly won and then travelled to France on international duty where they won their match against the French national team. Success breeds success and they continued their season with a win at the British National Championship in July. In addition to victory in the under 16 double scull Laura was also part of the gold medal winning under 18 quadruple scull ! Laura on the right at Nantes, France To round out the season Laura and Katy won gold at the Home International championships in Cork, Ireland. This win was all the after victory in the GB-France match. more impressive as they competed up a category in the under 18 double scull. To mark her incredible season Laura was chosen to captain the Scottish Junior team for the Irish trip. Laura has been rowing since she was 10 years old and competing at this level demands a heavy training load with two training sessions per day, 6 days a week.
