THIS month
obviously couldn’t let the month pass without mentioning September 18th. By our next issue in October, we will know whether Scotland will be a country in its own right or will remain a part of the UK. It’s certainly not for me to sway your judgement - all I would say is that this is a once in a lifetime decision and not to be taken lightly. Whether you are a definite ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ or still undecided, I urge you to make the effort on that day to exercise your right and cast your vote. I would hate to think the future of Scotland was in any way resultant from apathy. You have to be registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday 2nd September. There is still time to register and you can download a form at www.aboutmyvote.co.uk Not quite as momentous as September 18th, but our September issue, no 240, marks 19 years of publishing the Gryffe Advertizer. We’ll need to have something special planned for our 20th anniversary next year - whether it be in Scotland.co.uk or Scotland.com. Hope you like our front page picture taken by one of our readers. This was the Red Arrows on their fly-past for the Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony. Once they had flown over the stadium they then headed over Houston, Bridge of Weir, Quarriers and Kilmacolm and ultimately to their landing destination of Prestwick. I was gutted I missed the fly-past, but I’ve seen lots of photos and it is just aweinspiring. And carrying on that theme, anyone who was around Kilmacolm on 14th August might have seen the Spitfire buzzing around that afternoon. Again, I was in work and missed it but my hubby, who was on the garage roof working that day, said it was f-f-f-f-fantastic (grrr)! Finally, did anyone spot our Linda from the office who was in both Opening and Closing ceremonies? She said the experience was wonderful and, again, a once in a lifetime opportunity!

Travel blog
by Maureen Horton of Travel a la Carte
Fifty Shades of Purple
As summer comes slowly to an end we can all reflect on warm days and balmy nights enjoyed whether home or away. On our annual pilgrimage to Provence, we took a drive through the Lavender fields on the Valensole Plateau and were awe struck at the intensity and vibrancy of colour.... Mile after mile of purple as far as the eye could see, interspersed with fields of golden wheat - their shafts swaying gently on the breeze. The lavender grows in rich red fertile soil and is at its absolute best between mid June until mid July when it is then harvested. On stopping for a photo opportunity, we were amazed by the constant droning sound of the busy bees going about their work of pollination, thankfully leaving us well alone. We meandered up to the picture perfect village of Moustier St Marie in Haut Provence, one of France’s most beautiful villages perched in an exceptional setting, surrounded by the awesome Gorges of Verdon and the stunning Opal coloured Lake St Croix. The village is famous for its rich history of ceramic craftsmanship and the faience is renowned for its fine decoration. After a stroll round the village, we spent a special moment in the beautiful Bastides du Moustiers an Alan Ducasse hotel, where the ambience was peaceful and refined and the cuisine superb. Ahhhh I can feel the sun and the heat!

Red Arrows over Ayr
And this one was taken by Mo Ferrington as the Red Arrows flew back to Prestwick following the Commonwealth Games Ceremony.
Memorial - Bridge of Weir & 1st World War - 100 years ago this month James Miller Stirling Smellie , Royal Navy and Thomas James Spink, 1st South Wales Borderers James Miller Smellie was born in Falkirk in 1892, the only son of James Smellie and Annie Salmond Miller. By the time James was born, his father had died. Annie married William Forsyth in 1896 but he died in 1900. Annie Forsyth became the post mistress at Bridge of Weir after 1911. In 1912, James joined the Royal Navy. On 30th July 1914, he was posted to HMS Cressy as an engine room artificer. The armoured cruiser HMS Cressy. With the equally slow and elderly cruisers Aboukir and Hogue, was on patrol off the Dutch coast on 23rd September 1914. HMS Aboukir was first to be torpedoed by the German submarine U9 at 0620 hrs. Her sister ships attempted to pick up survivors, believing she had struck a PHOTO: HMS Cressy mine, presenting easy targets. Hogue was sunk at 0655 hrs. Then, at 0720 hrs U9 fired two torpedoes at Cressy. One just missed but the other hit her on the starboard side. The damage was not fatal until a third torpedo ruptured the boilers in the engine room. She sank within thirty minutes. 1459 men were lost from the three ships including the 22 year old James. Thomas James Spink was born in 1888 in Walsall, the youngest son of John William Spink and Sarah Pricee. In 1903, John William Spink, journeyman currier, now in 4 Windsor Place, Bridge of Weir, married Sarah McDade. By 1911 Thomas had joined the British Army and was in South Africa with the South Wales Borderers. He arrived in France on 13th August 1914, nine days after the war began and was involved in the rapid retreat from Mons, and the Battle of the Marne before the two opposing armies fought each other to a standstill at the Aisne and dug in to trenches that lasted for the duration. The battalion War Diary for 26th September reads: “The most ghastly day of my life and yet one of the proudest because my Regiment did its job and held on against heavy odds. At 4.15am Germans attacked. D and A Companies in the trenches. B and C hustled up to support, and soon the whole place alive with bullets.” 86 men and four officers of the 1st battalion were killed in the engagement, including 26 year old Thomas Spink. When the going gets tough Renfrewshire Mums get selling! Over 400 Renfrewshire mums and families last month took part selling and saving in their local Paisley Jack & Jill nearlynew baby & kids market, and many more will be getting ready for more smart savings at this month’s Jack & Jill Market on Saturday 20th September, 10.30am-1pm, at Paisley Lagoon Leisure Centre.
Local Mum of 3, Claire McNaughton, is the newly appointed Marketing & Events Manager running the monthly community market in Renfrewshire to help local mums and families reduce the cost of raising children. “I have always been a dedicated Jack & Jill shopper and have saved a fortune on buggies, toys, cots, and clothes over the past few years. When my youngest daughter Ruby-Mae was born prematurely at 28 weeks it was important to me to be able to get quality preemie clothes for her, as they are expensive new and not widely available in high street shops. It is so rewarding now to be able to help other mums to save on quality items for their kids just as I do.” Thrift has become the new cool as research shows that it now costs £90,000 to raise a child up to 11 years, an increase of 15% over the past 5 years. It’s no wonder mums have beefed up their selling and bartering skills in a bid to make and save money. Stalls can be booked at Jack & Jill Markets across Scotland at: www.jackandjillmarket.co.uk Contact: Claire McNaughton, Marketing & Events Manager, The Jack & Jill Market Email: renfrewshire@jackandjillmarket.co.uk, Tel: 07804 200426, Facebook: www.facebook.com/jackandjillmarket
Renfrewshire Carers Centre
Renfrewshire Carers Centre is a charity which supports all unpaid carers throughout Renfrewshire. We depend upon fundraising to help top up our income. On Saturday 26th July we had a fun day and balloon race at the Carers Centre. We are one of the Provost’s 4 nominated charities and she came along to release the balloons. The balloon that travels the furthest will not only get it’s owner a prize but a prize will also be going to the person that finds it and phones it in.

Business as usual at Glasgow Airport
Following on from the games I was invited along to Glasgow Airport to have a catch up with the management team and also see the new terminal building. Staff at the airport were still buzzing from the success during the tournament and I was reassured, following the recent announcement that Glasgow Airport is for sale, that jobs at the Airport were secure. Amanda McMillian, Managing Director at the Airport was keen to share that they had experienced growth over the period of the games and also that another airline was expanding their existing flights from the airport.
Diageo, Shield hall
The Diageo plant at Shieldhall is going through a period of sustained change. Following the announcement that there was to be a review of the logistics on site, and an impact on jobs, I met with Adam Mair, Operations Director to discuss my concerns. I am reassured that there are investment and growth plans in place and the interests of all staff are being considered. I still expect a positive outcome to the operations consultation.
Construction Skills Visit – Inchinnan
I visited Construction Skills College in Inchinnan to hear of the future plans. I remain convinced that having control of skills, employment and training in Scotland is the best way forward to meet our needs. Trade and apprenticeships skills are vital for the workforce of the future.

BUSINESS news iT blog
with Colin Fyfe of Colcom Microsoft made Update 1 for Windows 8.1 a mandatory update last month. What this means is that Windows 8.1 based PCs will need to have a further ‘1’, ‘Update 1’, installed before they will receive any further updates from now on. If you have not made the jump to 8.1 yet (that’s just the first ‘1’), and many have not, now may be the time to put four or five hours aside, (broadband speed depending) and do so. Pop the kettle on. The process starts with a visit to Updates in the Control Panel, and allowing or forcing any outstanding updates to install. On completing all the available updates and restarting the computer, you can visit the green ‘Store’ tile in the start screen. You should notice that the first download says Windows 8.1. Go ahead; you are probably a third of the way now. Once you have 8.1 proper, you may notice the beginnings of old familiarity with a ‘Start button’ of sorts. Right click it to find Control Panel again and click on updates to find 8.1, update 1. More waiting awaits you. Windows 8.1 Update 1 makes the Metro interface a little more palatable although you will probably still find yourself on the Desktop, using a thirdparty app such as Classic Shell, to bring back the Windows 7-style Start menu. Still, on the rare occasion that you find yourself thrust into the new Metro interface, Update 1 makes the whole experience feel a little less you’re being brutally plucked out of one operating system and unceremoniously dumped in another. So that’s good.
One thing for those looking for a new computer just now, I would recommend that you double check that 8.1 is installed. I notice a lot of Sony kit on the shelf is frozen back in time on Windows 8 and as you can see, updating is no scoosh. I am in the Kilmacolm Community Centre on Monday 1st September from 9.30am til 12noon offering advice and help with your tech. Come along and say hi.
Gryffe Camera Club We are looking forward to starting our 2014-2015 syllabus on Wednesday 10th September, meeting in the Carrick Centre, Houston at 7.30pm. Any new members will be made most welcome, and have the fantastic opportunity to learn all sorts of hints and tips to improve their photography whether you are a complete beginner through to the more advanced. Please don’t think that you must have a top of the range DSLR and a full set of lenses to join us; any camera will take a photograph! If you are interested in learning more about photography then you can gain many skills from our members who have many years of experience in all subjects, from Macro to Landscape, Studio to Street photography and much more! We have guest speakers on some nights, who give us inspiration as well as sharing their secret techniques. In addition to our varied syllabus, members have the opportunity to join specialist workshops which meet to learn more specific aspects of photography from basic techniques and camera settings, particular interests such as Wildlife photography, right through to editing your images using computer software. For the more advanced photographer we have the opportunity to team up and compete against other clubs in various competitions throughout the season, as well as taking part in our club league, competing against each other in either the beginners or advanced sections. We firmly believe we have something for everyone! Winning images from last season include Knapps by Bill Crookston, Manfred’s Snack by Tony McNamara and Hidden Within by Helen Teese.

Kilmacolm Camera Club It’s nearly time for a new season of the Camera Club. We start up again on Tuesday 30th September, with a bumper bundle of goodies for our 201415 Syllabus. Members have been digging out their Canons, Nikons, smart phones and Box Brownies (no – they’re not a biscuit!) in anticipation. Club members have not been idle during the summer months. Some of us have been out and about with our cameras. Our opening night traditionally includes a section where members (and new members, we hope!) can share images taken on holiday, or just pictures that they feel proud of. Shown here are some shots taken during the summer months.
So please update your diaries with (1) the date – Tuesday 30th September; (2) the time – 7.30pm; (3) the venue – Room 101, KNCC. Come along and enjoy the chat (and the tea and biscuits!). Contacts: Billy Blair, Tel: 873383; Janice Stevenson, Tel 873595.
Caring for Your Smile We all know that brushing your teeth is good for them, but do you know why? Brushing your teeth for 2 minutes at least twice a day prevents plaque building up on your teeth. Plaque is a film of bacteria that can coat your teeth and is a major cause of gum disease, tooth decay and cavities. Regular brushing and flossing also helps to prevent bad breath. Last month we highlighted that your choice of toothbrush is important, but so is a good toothpaste. Most of the leading brands offer a range of toothpastes and we recommend that you read the packaging and choose one with the right concentration of fluoride. For adults that would be at least 1,350ppm fluoride. Specially formulated toothpastes in a range of child-friendly flavours are also widely available, just make sure you use one that is appropriate to your child’s age. In some cases your dentist will recommend a higher concentration if they think you need it. Make sure you brush all the surfaces of all your teeth using small circular movements. After brushing, spit out any excess toothpaste, but don’t rinse your mouth with water or mouthwash. Children up to the age of at least 7 should be supervised when brushing. A pea size amount of toothpaste is sufficient for children aged 3-6 with just a smear of toothpaste for the under 3’s. In addition to your toothbrushing regime, using a mouthwash that contains fluoride can help avoid tooth decay. For maximum effectiveness do this at a different time from brushing, such as after lunch and don’t eat or drink for 30 minutes afterwards. In general we don’t recommend mouthwash for children under the age of 12. If you have any queries regarding oral health or tooth brushing specifically don’t hesitate to visit us at Kilbarchan Dental Practice, call us on 01505 704969 or click www.kilbarchandental.co.uk where you’ll find lots more free tips and advice.

The first open meeting of association took place in The Bridge on the 10th June. The committee were able to report good feed back from the mail shot to all residents. Members present raised further areas of concern regarding the state and maintenance of the roads, pavements and grass area in the estate. A further newsletter has been emailed to all who responded with an email address to the secretary, Alison Ross. (alisonross256@btinternet.com) Facebook page www.facebook.com/DERA1044 At the next meeting, the committee will report on progress from the meeting with the roads department. Date for your diary: Open Meeting - Tuesday 7th October at 7.30pm in The Bridge, Bridge of Weir.
Personnel are at The Bridge from 1pm to 2pm on the third Friday of every month for the issue of hearing aid batteries and hearing aid checks.
Bridge of Weir Community Council Trust everyone enjoyed the delightful summer weather, it was wonderful to see so many residents make use of the village parks. Members of the Community Council have been busy throughout the summer planning the enhancement of our Christmas Lighting display working alongside engineers from Renfrewshire Council and representatives from the supply company and we hope to provide a much improved display. The Chairman and Vice-Chairman visited the War Memorial to survey the improvement works. They identified a number of outstanding issues ranging from railings not replaced where the wall coping was renewed, lettering missing from the Memorial itself and railings detached from frames, these and a few other matters were passed onto Councillor MacLaren to forward to the appropriate Council Officer. The Community Council has objected to a planning application for a dwelling house in the garden ground adjacent to 30 Houston Road, the objection is based on this building would deprive tenants of the flats use of the garden ground, the close proximity to the primary school, crossing point and bus stop. If approved this development would create a precedent allowing owners of flatted tenement properties to build in gardens causing areas to be over developed. Two delegates are to attend the Living Streets Community Street Audit Training Conference, their remit will be to identify resources that would enable possible improvements to many of the private pavements and access routes within the village. We fully support LEAP in their bid for further funding from the Climate Challenge Fund. This would allow them to continue the excellent service they have brought to the village and surrounding areas. Many residents commented on the local press coverage of the Queens Baton Relay not including pictures of Bridge of Weir. The Community Council website is currently displaying photographs of the day and can be visited on www.bridgeofweir.org The next meeting of the Community Council will take place on Tuesday 2nd September at 7pm in the Cargill Hall.

Andy Girvan “It was a great honour and a day that will live long in the memory” is how Queen’s Baton Bearer, Andy Girvan, summed up his experience. A “cheerie-whatever-theweather” postman for over 30 years, he was nominated in recognition of his huge contribution to the community. We wish him a long and very happy retirement. Andy went on to pass the baton to Lynne Gordon (a resident of Warlock Road, who continued with the baton through Bridge of Weir.

Erskine Farmers Market Bringing the best of Scottish produce to Erskine. Fresh from the wilds and ready to be selected by you, feast on a wonderful array of meats, game and fish. With delicious cheeses, preserves, gluten free baking and more, there is something to suit all tastes. Located at the Erskine Garden Centre on the third Saturday of every month, free parking is also available.
BoW Senior Citizens’ Association Our session commences on Wednesday 24th September in the Cargill Gall, Bridge of Weir at 7.15pm with entertainment. Our meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and a warm welcome is extended to anyone who is over 55. Some parents in Bridge of Weir have asked if there are any plans to change the catchment area for Gryffe High School. I don’t know how this rumour started but I am more than happy to quash this. There are no plans to review the catchment area now or anytime in the foreseeable future. Bridge of Weir Gardens and Allotments Society has done an absolutely fantastic job transforming the overgrown patch of land at the rear of The Bridge on Main Street into a demonstration garden – with all of the work done by volunteers. Brighter Bridge of Weir, again a group of willing, able and hardworking volunteers also do a fantastic job and had the village looking beautiful for Gala Day and the Commonwealth Baton Relay. Work to improve and restore the War Memorial is now complete. I was humbled to attend the multi-faith service to mark the centenary of the start of World War 1 in St Mirin’s Cathedral with Bishop Keenan, Mgr. Tormey and Rev Kenneth Gray from Freeland Church. It has taken some time but I am pleased the overhanging tree in Churchill Drive in Bishopton has now been cut back and high vehicles can pass safely. I have asked the council to cut back the growth on the pathway along Ferry Road to make it safer for pedestrians and to help with sightlines for traffic. Over 800 S1 pupils have taken advantage of the Council’s offer to open a new iSave Credit Union Account with a £10 credit. To help combat the scourge of payday lenders and to promote ethical saving the council has offered all S1 pupils a credit union account with a £10 deposit. Getting young people involved with credit unions can develop good savings habits that will hopefully last a lifetime. If you are a pupil in S1 and have not taken up the offer, please do so. We are a friendly group who meet on Tuesday evenings from September to April in the Lower Hall of St Columba Church, Kilmacolm and we always welcome new members. We usually stop for a ‘cuppa’ and a chat half way through practises as the social side is as important to us as the singing!. This year an exciting programme of music is planned which includes something for everyone. The December concert will range from Bach’s Magnificat to ever popular Christmas songs and carols, while favourite opera choruses from famous composers such as Verdi and Bizet and a performance of Karl Jenkins “The Armed Man” are promised for April. In May this year, members of the choir had the honour of performing in a joint concert with the prestigious Westminster Chamber singers from the University of Westminster, Salt Lake City USA. Our musical director is Christopher Barr who in 2012 was awarded the National Youth Choir of Scotland Student conductor Bursary which allowed him to study under Christopher Bell as the Assistant conductor of the National Boys Choir of Scotland. Recent achievements include conducting the world premiere of Ken Johnston’s “Flodden 1513” with Stirling Schools Choirs and NYCoS Stirling Area Choir as part of the Cappella Nova Stirling 500 festival; directing choral workshops for Glasgow Spring Sing and the amaSing Festival and off stage conducting for Scottish Opera’s production of Gareth Williams “Elephant Angel”. During the Commonwealth games he was chorus master for the Glasgow UNESCO City of Music Nicola Benedetti Secret Flashmob project and workshop leader at the ‘Jump, Swim, Run’ family session as part of the BigBigBig Sing at Glasgow Green. In October, Christopher will be the assistant conductor for the London Festival of Male Voice Choirs at the Royal Albert Hall, London. If you are interested in joining us, please just come along to St Columba Church, Kilmacolm at 7.30pm on 2nd September or contact our president, Alison McAuslane on 01475 520280. And so summer time nears to an end and the children have returned to school and families look back over a great season of summer weather. Was it the fact of schools starting back or Hurricane Bertha that brought a change in the weather?
In Dargavel Village, Bishopton there is some confusion about the ‘shared surface’ roads. I still remain to be fully convinced but apparently, shared surfaces are a long established international road use system, which has been growing in popularity in this country for many years. It means that pedestrians, including children on bikes etc., have priority over vehicles on these roads. The proposed signage which will warn road users in Dargavel will be triangular with a picture of an adult holding a child’s hand and the words “Pedestrians in Road Ahead”. A traffic order is also being sought to make the 20mph speed limit signs circled red (compulsory) rather than green (advisory). On another roads related issue, the extension of the footpath to connect Dargavel to Ingliston Country Club via the bridal path, has been agreed by Roads officers. They will investigate possible sources of funding and will keep me advised. The Railtrack work on the fencing on Middlepenny Road has me puzzled. I note that the crash barrier has been ‘refreshed’ but the new fencing behind it seems very flimsy. I have been trying to find out why that particular type of fencing was erected. In the meantime congratulations to the local landscapers, who are making a great effort to improve the appearance of the area, which also makes it at least feel safer.
Lots of good work has been going on in the villages. Thanks to all the community councils, residents associations and other groups for all their good works to make our environment so much brighter. I am also pleased with the hedge cutting on the A761 between Bridge of Weir and Brookfield. Hopefully something the same can be done on the A8, but we need the dirt scrapped from the pavements so grass and weeds cannot get a hold. Dog Fouling is still high up in the Top Ten list of complaints. Please note that many “No Dog Fouling” signs on lamp posts display an old phone number. If you try phoning this number you will be told the correct number to call. The correct number for the Community Safety wardens is 03003000380. Hopefully it won’t be too long before the old signs are replaced with new ones. By the way, 0300 numbers are charged at the same rate as 01 and 02 telephone numbers, so you are not charged any more than when we had 0141 numbering. The council does not generate revenue from having these telephone numbers. As always, I appreciate all your suggestions on how to improve our lot. Some good ones in recently include revised lining on the roads to keep traffic moving.

Art Display and Sale In the Bridge, Bridge of Weir Fundraising for the Beatson Cancer Charity In February and March this year, the Advertizer reported on Bridge of Weir girls Katie and Judith Beattie, and the very successful art exhibition they organised at the Skypark centre in Glasgow. At the start of her final year as an art student, Judith had been diagnosed with Leukaemia, and had to defer her studies, to undergo an intensive programme of chemotherapy. Through this time when Judith was so ill, the treatment and support she received inspired the family to put something back. Their first campaign raised £1,500 for the leukaemia charity The Anthony Nolan Trust. This was followed by the Art Exhibition. The inspiration came from local artist and Gryffe High pupil Ferran Hart, who organised a sale of his own works in a Glasgow gallery and generated a considerable sum of money for Teenage Cancer Trust. Judith called upon her Art Student classmates to each donate an artwork to the cause. At this time, Judith was still very ill, and was an in patient at the Beatson in Glasgow. Twin sister Katie acted as event organiser, and media coordinator. The exhibition raised in excess of £13,000. The incredible support provided by Teenage Cancer Trust, Skyparks, the media, the volunteers, the generosity of the art students, local and internationally acclaimed artists who contributed their work, meant that the event had no overhead costs. Every last penny was donated to Teenage Cancer Trust. If you missed all of this excitement, there is another chance to view some of the works and even take home your very own art treasure. From Monday 8th September until the beginning of October, works will be on display and for sale in the Bridge. Contributions will include works by local artists, Alan Black, Ferran Hart, and Judith Beattie. Entry is free. Please feel free to come along and have a look. All proceeds will be donated the Beatson Cancer Charity. Opening hours: 9am–5pm Monday & Saturday, 1pm–5pm Tuesday & Friday, 10am–2pm Wednesday & Thursday

Cross Café 90th Birthday Celebration Saturday 13th September
Please come along and help us celebrate our special day. We are running a children’s treasure hunt throughout the day. Come into the Cross Café on the day and collect an entry form. There will be two age groups, 4 years to 7 years and 8 years to 11 years. A correct winning entry from each age group will be drawn at 4pm with each lucky winner receiving a gift. We are also holding a raffle in aid of the MS Society, a great charity close to our hearts. We have loads of fantastic prizes, star prize being a Sony 32” TV donated by WJ Fillshill Ltd!! Raffle tickets can be bought from the Cross Café at any time. The draw will take place after the children’s prize draw. We will also be holding competitions through out the day, guess the amount of sweeties in the jar & guess the weight of our special celebration cake. To help our celebrations along we are very lucky to have entertainment provided throughout the day by the Riverside Youth Bank, St Colomba’s Pipe band and of course our Juke Box, come and put on a tune. Look out for our sweetie cart and ice cream cart, lots of sweet treats to be had!
Thank you Douglas and Adrienne Rae of Owlcroft, would like to sincerely thank all relatives, friends and many warm hearted residents of Kilmacolm, Greenock and beyond who sent us cards, letters or flowers following our horrific experience of having our house totally gutted by fire. Happily we were not at home at the time which was very fortunate indeed. However we were unfortunate that all keepsakes gathered over the years were destroyed in the fire. It is at times like this that one is thankful for concerned family and friends who are all sharing our burden. The devastation caused by the fire we are told will take around one year before the house will be habitable again. To all who have contacted us over the last two weeks, many, many thanks. I never knew that we had so many friends!! God Bless you all.

The Cross Café is having its 90th birthday bash on the 13th September in the Piazza. Alda and Johanna are the beating heart of the village and provide an alternative meeting place to the Cargill Centre. If I wish to know what is going on in the village and collect concerns for me to action, I make for the Café! The Lights Out ceremony on the 4th August at the Wellpark Mid Kirk, the town Kirk, was a full house. The service started at 10.30pm with the hymn “Onward Christian Soldiers” and finished at exactly 11pm with us extinguishing our candles. There was a both rousing and melancholic medley of songs performed by Inverclyde Voices and further readings and songs. As a commemoration of the centenary of the start of the First World War it was most poignant and reverent. The twinning signs with the French village of Merignies have now been positioned at the main entrances to the village. Thanks are due to Inverclyde Council roads department for their alacrity in calling in favours to have them competed . We have seen major carriage way improvements on roads throughout the village including Lochwinnoch, Churchill, the A761, Auchentiber and West Glen Roads. I am often asked about white lining and can confirm that this is done by contractors, who are in great demand in the West of Scotland, and we collect jobs and have the white lining completed when there is sufficient for several days work. I attended the Official Opening of the £10.5m upgrade of the International Arrivals at the Terminal Building at Glasgow Airport. Under the management of BAA and its Chief Executive Amanda MacMillan the Airport is going from strength to strength, in spite of competition from Edinburgh and Prestwick, though it has more or less seen off the latter. Glasgow Airport and its environs is one of the top ten employers in Inverclyde and it concerns me that the Scottish Government withdrew support for the Glasgow Airport Rail Link but is now putting £15m support into Prestwick. Security at Glasgow is one of the very best in the country, as regular customers will endorse, 99.6% of passengers wait less than 10 minutes in the queue. I understand from local residents that the contractor who delivered the human waste on a nearby field has been given 21 days to remove it from the field. Where the offending substance is going, I do not know, though I suspect it will have trouble finding a good home. Surgeries: 29th September - Cargill Centre 11-12noon. Clubhouse Turns To Church In a day when we see many churches being turned into furniture showrooms, bingo halls and dance studios, it’s a remarkable thing to see a clubhouse being turned into a Church. This bucks the trend. Yet it is what has happened in Quarriers Village, Inverclyde, this year! Twelve months ago Morton FC announced that they were moving their training facility out of Quarriers Village. For several years the footballers had been a familiar sight in the village, running up the main street or practising on the field near Hattrick Farm. Meanwhile, for the last ten years, the congregation who had moved out of the former Mount Zion Church were as good as invisible. After the closure of the Church in 2004 the congregation continued meeting to praise God and pray in “temporary accommodation” in Bethesda’s training rooms, which were used during the week by Quarriers Staff. In those years not a Sunday went by without the ‘real’ church, that is, the people, gathering together. However their accommodation had the disadvantage of not looking like a Church, and it was unavailable on weekdays. Morton’s clubhouse, on the other hand, had the advantage of looking like a church! The minister of Mount Zion, Pastor Andy Lunn, often walked around it thinking “This would make a great wee Church”. He even asked Quarriers for the use of the building, but was told that Morton had the prior claim.

Sole Solution Podiatry clinic has now been open in Kilmacolm for 6 months - and what a 6 months it’s been! The opening hours have had to double to accommodate the demand and they now sell a large and varied selection of footcare products from the clinic. Laura quotes “It’s been fantastic meeting the residents of Kilmacolm and the surrounding villages and providing them with the highest quality of podiatry care and advice. The loyalty and repeat custom has really been second to none and allowed this service to exist” Laura, owner/podiatrist at Sole Soltuion, would like to thank all her existing clients and looks forward to welcoming new customers also. Imagine Andy’s joy, therefore, on hearing that the football club were moving out. In January the Church Council signed the lease and Andy received the keys. He, with others from the congregation, spent much of the next few months restoring the building to its former glory. They turned the wet room into a classroom, demolished a partition wall, replaced floors, installed more panelling, painted, varnished and waxed all the walls and woodwork, and finally moved in in April. It was still ‘work in progress’ until the official dedication weekend in June and now the building is a fully functioning church much to the joy of the very faithful congregation. To see what’s been done, feel free to drop in anytime you see the door open. Sunday morning services are at 10.30am, and anyone is welcome
Kilmacolm-Mérignies Twinning: Road-Signs Go Up!
It’s official, Kilmacolm is now proudly twinned with the village of Mérignies near Lille in northern France! A big thank you must go to Inverclyde Council for being so prompt in putting up the twinning signs at the entry to the village on the Bridge of Weir and Port Glasgow Roads. The period following the signing of the twinning agreement in France on 12th July has been a busy one for the twinning committee. We held our debriefing meeting on 5th August and will meet again on 9th September to finalise the twinning calendar for 2014-2015. Our aim is to reach and engage all sections of the local community in what is clearly a fantastic opportunity to enrich the cultural, social and economic life of Kilmacolm and the surrounding area. We are equally aware of the importance of maintaining and reinforcing our links with our French friends through regular communication and to this end we have set up monthly skype meetings with the twinning team in Mérignies! We’ll be in touch again very soon !

also very such a social gathering. Most of the choir stay on for lunch after rehearsals in the Community Centre Café.” Whilst many of the members hail from Kilmacolm, Bridge of Weir, Brookfield and Houston some travel from Lochwinnoch, Dalry, Beith and Elderslie for their weekly get together. The last 9 months have been very busy for the choir with events and performances, most of which raise money for local charities. Members of the Kilmacolm Rock Choir have performed at a range of community events including the Inverclyde Sports Personality Awards, they have performed to raise money for ‘HappyDayz’ Charity in Dunoon, the Elderslie Parish Church, and at the Lochwinnoch Arts Festival raising money for SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilspey). Larger scale performances took place at Murrayfield Stadium in Edinburgh where 700 Rock Choir members performed a surprise flashmob at half-time during the Scotland vs Japan match. In June this year ‘The Choir That Rocks’ Summer Concert was a sell-out at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall with 500 members singing together. Jennifer who leads the choir, helped to organise a trip for members to Abbey Road studios in London this year. “This was the most fantastic experience and everyone who came along made the most of their time in London. Recording at the world famous studios was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.” The trip also raised over £800 for McMillan Cancer Care. Rock Choir also took part in some filming for the BBC 3 musical drama ‘Glasgow Girls’. “It was a real honour to be asked to take part in this film and although the producers only needed a very small choir for 2 scenes, the members were given the opportunity to become ‘extra’s on set which was very exciting for everyone!”

Kilmacolm Village Art Class Come September, we are about to start our 6th year and the class continues to go from strength to strength. Our 18 enthusiastic members, from various surrounding villages, meet during the winter months on a Friday morning in the Kilmacolm Village Centre, and with the aid of our excellent tutor/adviser are all making good progress. We incorporate “workshops” with visiting artists; as a group/ and independently visit other local Art Exhibitions and on the social side have an annual lunch plus our bi-annual inhouse exhibition for family and friends. At this point in time the class is full, but we do run a waiting list. Secretary RUTH LAMONT, tel. 872368.
St Columba’s Bridge Class 2014-2015 Starting Tuesday 9th September at 7pm. This class will be suitable for beginners and for those who have played a little and who wish to return to the starting point. The first lessons will be very basic but soon progress to a level suitable for everyone and for those who wish to revise and reach a good standard by the end of the course . There will be an initial 10 week course followed in early 2015 by a further 8 weeks and possibly another 5 weeks after Easter. This should be sufficient to allow players to be able to play more in order to make further progress. For further information call 01505 872238 or 01505 872345.
Last month I attended the service at Greenock’s Wellpark Mid Kirk Church to commemorate the start of the First World War. During the poignant ecumenical service I don’t mind admitting shedding a few tears. A list of 1,800 unfortunate souls from Inverclyde who lost their lives in WWI was shown on a large screen in the church, though it is thought there could have been more who died as not all names were known. The night came to a close with us processing outside with lit candles to remember those who died, were injured and the families who were affected in their loss. My wife and I were able to go to Glasgow twice during the 11 days of Commonwealth Games events, once attending an evening athletics session at Hampden and another day just to visit, have a meal and soak up the atmosphere of it all. Team Scotland were fantastic with the country ending up a very credible fourth place on the medal table with a record bursting 53 medals. Really well done to all our athletes and those who support them. The Games were a fantastic advert for Glasgow and Scotland and was due to superb organisation by the Games committee, Glasgow City, the Scottish Government and everyone involved in supporting the games. We will also never forget the Clydesiders, those 15,000 volunteers who carried out an array of jobs to ensure everything ran smoothly. I know I was glad of their help as they helped guide us in the right direction around the city. Much revenue and prestige was raised from the Games and I am convinced a long lasting legacy will have been gained from them being held in Glasgow and Scotland. Recently I have again received complaints of speeding motorists on Port Glasgow Road in Kilmacolm. Can I please urge drivers to stay within speed limits. Surgeries: Friday 5th September at Boglestone Community Centre from 5pm to 6pm and Monday 15th at Clune Park Resource Centre from 1pm to 2pm. The Old Library Centre After the volunteers enjoyed a month’s holiday in the glorious summer weather The Old Library Centre has re-opened. The classes in Yoga and Pilates have already started. Some places are available in classes for Pilates on Monday morning and on Wednesday afternoon. The Yoga on Wednesday morning also has a few spaces and a new evening class will be held on Wednesday evenings. Computer classes will be held on Tuesday afternoons and Thursday mornings starting in the first week of September. These classes are limited to l2 places. If you are interested in attending any of these classes please contact the Centre our details are below. Brookfield Knights and KIPCo have an exciting programme of musical events arranged for the Autumn. The hobby interest groups such as Bridge, Craft, Family History and Book Club are starting their Autumn sessions and would welcome new members. The Centre’s website gives information on these and all our activities. The Board wish to express their grateful thanks to all the supporters who so generously give the Centre an annual donation. Donation letters are sent out, on request, to people who wish to keep the Centre functioning. Our thanks also go to the many people who contribute by attending the variety of events which take place in the Centre. The team of volunteers who give of their time to help is absolutely invaluable and essential to the viability of the Centre. One of the less obvious activities of the Centre is the ‘drop in’ reading room. This room is a pleasant place to meet others, to have a comfortable seat, a chat and a cup of tea or coffee. The Centre is open to everyone. After over l0 years of being open, it is still a surprise to find that some people do not know what activities are on offer within the Kilbarchan Facility. This summer our visitors have been from as near as Elderslie and as far away as America and Australia. Do visit the Centre, you will be made welcome. Hello Campers! Kilbarchan East Church Drama group rehearsals are now underway for November’s production of - yes, you’ve guessed, Hi de Hi, the well-loved comedy, which will be a family show complete with fun competitions!! More details about tickets to follow in October. Since being elected to Renfrewshire Council in 2012, one of the main priorities identified by villagers has been the need to resurface the main road through Kilbarchan and I have consistently advocated for this to be done. Following work on sections of the road over the last two summers, I can now report that work should be completed by the end of October on Shuttle Street between Church Street and the Meadside Avenue junction and from Low Barholm to Burnside Terrace. At the time of writing, work on Easwald Bank between Tandlehill Road and St Barchans Road is imminent. I am delighted that despite limits on funding these major works on the main road in Kilbarchan are being delivered. I know many Kilbarchan constituents will recall that last summer, a theft of copper cables from the Glentyan power sub station caused a power surge and consequently damage to household appliances in nearby homes. Recently I was dismayed to hear of a similar theft in the Tandlehill/Kibblestone Road area which resulted in a loss of power to some homes. I have therefore written to Scottish Power to demand that they review safety and security issues at the sites for which they are responsible I have also contacted the Police to ask that they also investigate and monitor the situation to prevent the individuals responsible from repeating such reckless behaviour. Like many people, I can’t say I’m the biggest fan of the multinational banks that created the last financial crisis. I therefore understand that many residents are rightly angry about the decision of RBS to close its Lochwinnoch branch. A bank which was bailed out by UK taxpayers in 2009 who now own 82% of it, has a social responsibility and should reconsider its decision. Given the many representations from all quarters including my own I hope that by the time the Advertizer goes to press RBS will have done so. Surgeries: Saturday 6th September and Saturday 4th October at 9am in the McKillop Institute, Lochwinnoch and 10am in the Steeple Hall, Kilbarchan. Lochwinnoch SWRI
We hope everyone has had a summer filled with sun, fun and games, with the success of the Gala Day, the Baton relay through the village and the amazing “Games” in the city. To keep the momentum going, Lochwinnoch SWRI cordially invites the ladies of the village to come along and join “The Rural” on the third Wednesday of each month at 7.30pm in the McKillop Hall. A varied syllabus of talks and demos has been arranged for the coming months. If you are not too sure exactly what the Scottish Women’s Rural Institute is and does, please go to http://www.swri.org.uk/ and all will be explained. Our first meeting is on Wednesday 17th September, 7.30pm, McKillop Hall, when Hayley Douglas of Castle Semple Visitors Centre will be giving us a glimpse through “Windows on Wild Life”, to keep us up-to-date with what is happening with the wonderful birds, animals and wild flowers right on our doorstep. The competitions are: 1 - Jar of Orange Curd; 2 - Arrangement using; 3 - fresh flowers. The competitions are all just a bit of fun and certainly not compulsory!! We look forward to welcoming old and new members. For further information contact Elma Richmond at richmond32@tiscali.co.uk or phone 01505 843193.

LEAP Community Consultation 2014 LEAP would like to say a big thank you to everyone who took part in our recent Community Consultation. We had 263 responses in total to our survey which is a fantastic response. Overall your feedback was very positive: 95% of you said you would support the continuation of LEAP and 94% said you would recommend LEAP to friends and family. You asked us for more communication, more follow up advice and visits, and more information on local services. We will address these issues and the survey feedback will shape our future direction and application for further funding. We have published a full report of the consultation findings on our LEAP website: www.myleapproject.org/community-development/communitysurvey-2014-result/ or you can obtain a paper copy from any of our LEAP offices. We are also following up contacting anyone who indicated they would be interested in one of our services. Our lucky winners of a Fairtrade Hamper are: Clare Hipkiss (Kilbarchan), Sandy McKenzie (Bridge of Weir) and Anne Braekkan (Lochwinnoch). Enjoy your hampers!
I am pushing Renfrewshire Council to try and help resolve the historic problem of the Kilbarchan overflow, which means that under certain conditions residents in Station Road and Churchill Place, in particular, end up with raw sewage coming up through their drains. Habbies have suffered this for too many years and its high time the infrastructure was brought up to standard. Its goodbye to Eilish of Sheridan’s Stores in New Street, who has served Kilbarchan for many years and who is moving on. I always found Eilish very friendly and helpful, especially to the pensioners of the village, and I wish her all the best for the future. I also welcome the new owners and hope the Store thrives under their stewardship.
1. Highly Durable. Unlike hardwood flooring, they don’t scratch, score, dent, or fade in sunlight. With some ranges giving up to a 15 year guarantee you can be assured it’s going to last. No fading, cracks or re-sanding to worry about. 2. Waterproof. Both are perfect for kitchens and bathrooms and are less slippy than ceramic tiles. 3. Easily Maintained. Spills are easy to mop up, general cleaning is as simple as a soft brush now and then and a damp mop. Dog hair is easy to manage. 4. Warm Underfoot. One of Karndean’s slogans is ‘warm in winter, cool in summer’. Unlike ceramic tiles they are not as cold underfoot. 5. Unique. You can easily design your own floor. With borders and motifs you can be creative and suit your chosen decor. With a home sampling service and advice on picking the floor to suit your home, why not give us a call and be on your way to a fabulous floor from Orchard Flooring. Lochwinnoch residents are asking valid questions about what the shape of postal services will be in the village if the service moves into the Spar Shop at the Cross. Questions about access and space are top of the list, so at the last meeting of Lochwinnoch Community Council I gave them a contact for Spar at Scottish level so that we can get definite answers and maintain a Post Office service in the village worthy of the name. Although I am in favour of renewables in principle it’s a NO from me to the current wind turbine application at Castle Hill, Lochwinnoch. This is in the Regional Park and I believe this would undermine the amenity of the Park so I have lodged an objection to this. My advice surgery in Kilbarchan is on the 2nd Wednesday of the month in the Steeple Hall at 7.45pm, and my advice surgery in Lochwinnoch is on the 4th Wednesday of the month in the McKillop at 7.30pm, excluding July. I am also available to constituents who can call me on 07534 148224, or e-mail me at cllr.andy.doig@ renfrewshire.gov.uk.

Weaver’s Cottage The Commonwealth Games brought many extra visitors to the National Trust for Scotland’s Weaver’s Cottage in Kilbarchan. In exceptional weather these two couples from England had a friendly discussion over the likely uses to which the stone object in front of them might be put. If you would like to see it and find out what it is and witness the famous loom in action, take the opportunity in September, as the Weaver’s Cottage closes for the winter on Tuesday 30th September. The Bannockburn Commemorative tartan rugs, scarfs and ties have been selling well - they will make unique presents and are available in the shop in the Weaver’s Cottage.
Electric Bike Fancy an alternative to driving, but think cycling is too much effort? Just need a bit of extra oomph when you’re cycling? LEAP have a new electric bike for members of the community to try out to see if this could be an option for you. Our new electric bike will be at the Electric Vehicle launch in Lochwinnoch on 20th September, and if you would like to try this for yourself, please bring proof of your address and we’ll let you take it for a short spin. We will also be taking names for those who want a longer hire of the electric bike to try it out for a bit longer.

Gryffe Valley Rotary Speakers The variety of topics addressed by speakers at Gryffe Valley Rotary never ceases to amaze! Over recent weeks members have heard a topical talk about WW1 graves in France, the inspirational story of a severely injured athlete who became an international para-triathlete, something of the work undertaken by the Prince’s Trust to support young people, some insights into the murky workings of the energy supply industry in the UK, the problems arising from a wide range of different addictions, and some unfortunate tunnel incidents arising from our inherited Victorian railway infrastructure. Two topics highlighted the current pressures on local government funding. Firstly Fiona Catterson (Head of School) and Suzanne Green (Classroom Assistant) from Corseford School. Fiona gave an update on the great work being undertaken to help children with spina bifida to achieve their full potential. Suzanne covered her work in the after-school club and during the summer breaks. Pictures and videos showed the range of facilities at the school (including a “magic carpet” and a new multi media room) with the specialist staff working with the children to their obvious delight and enjoyment. They also thanked Gryffe Valley for the equipment provided for disabled sailing at Castle Semple which the children had hugely enjoyed and benefited from. A truly inspirational story of dedicated specialist staff with first class facilities and equipment – what a crying shame that it seems that they have spare capacity for more children but there is insufficient funding to allow them to attend. Secondly, founder Peter McKerrell from Colourful Kilmacolm came along to thank the club for their donation and to give a progress report on their work around the village. Planters have been planted in the new Piazza and at Birkmyre Park and provide a colourful spectacle thanks to the willing effort from a band of volunteers. Colourful Kilmacolm followed on from Brighter Bridge of Weir in helping to protect and enhance our local environment – one wonders what will be the next alliterative village nametag. Halcyon Houston, Brilliant Brookfield, Lovely Lochwinnoch? The mind boggles!
New name for Johnstone street Councillor for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, and Lochwinnoch Ward, Cllr Andy Doig, has successfully persuaded Renfrewshire Council that a new street in Johnstone town centre, created as a consequence of the new Johnstone Town Hall project, be named Parker’s Way after the late Derek Parker, former journalist, folklorist, and historian, who died a few months ago. The proposed street will be very close to the new Johnstone Library which is part of the exciting Town Hall development. The old Library, which was a second home for Derek as he spent hours there researching his articles and books, was also on the same site, so it seems appropriate that a street is named after him very close to where he penned some of his most memorable work. Cllr Doig told The Advertizer: “Parker’s Way was the name of his newspaper column so, for a street or lane which acts as a passage way between Church Street and the historic Houston Square, that name seems to resonate with me as one which his friends and family across Johnstone and the Villages would easily recognise as being associated with the late Derek Parker and his memory.”

howwood & elderslie I heard the Commonwealth baton going through the village was a great success. I missed it as I was on holiday but through the wonders of Facebook I saw how busy the streets were so, well done Howwood. It seems we won’t be getting a new Post Office any time soon. The Post Office management wrote to me recently basically saying as there was nowhere to base one they were putting any plans on hold for the time being. That is a pity as I feel this is yet another service being withdrawn from the village. We are no further forward with an increase in bus services through Howwood but we will continue to argue the case. Some good news though, the new car park at the sports centre based at Johnstone High School is now open and will now make a big difference for users of the facility. The council recently agreed to take part in the City Deal. This is a partnership between the UK government, the Scottish government and local councils. £1 billion pounds have been committed to the improving infrastructure, creating thousands of jobs including additional help for young people and transport links. This is a long term project but I am sure many people from Howwood will benefit. As I write this the weather is pretty miserable and with the kids back at school, the summer is coming to an end. With the referendum in September it will bring to a close a very long campaign. I have spoken to many people in the village about this and have heard a variety of views. I am sure the people of the village will turn up in huge numbers on 18th September to have their say in this momentous decision but, whatever the result, I do hope we all as Scots work together to improve our country. Surgeries: 4th Thursday of the month at 6pm in the Village Hall.

houston, crosslee & brookfield Houston Play Park Houston Play Park Improvement Group are delighted to be one of 4 charities selected for the Bank of Scotland Community Fund. Residents can vote for HPPIG in BOS, Bridge of Weir and other Inverclyde branches, by SMS text, twitter or FB. The winning charity will receive £3000. If we were lucky enough to win we would use the funding to purchase equipment for Phase 2. The equipment planned for phase 2 will be unique with some pieces being the first to be installed in Renfrewshire Parks. We wish our park to be All Inclusive allowing children with disabilities to join in the fun and have a safe place to play. We hope any equipment installed in Phase 2 will give children in Houston a fabulous play area and encourage children from other villages to visit Houston and enjoy the facilities. Voting starts on 2nd September 2014 at 9am. We will be advertising throughout Houston via FB and posters in local amenities. Please vote for us to help Houston children get a fun play park. City Deal - A special meeting of the full council was recently held to approve a major investment programme in the Clyde Valley, known as the City Deal. This has involved Renfrewshire Council working alongside our colleagues in surrounding local authorities and alongside the UK Government to thrash out a huge investment programme which the Scottish Government have now also signed up to support. In total over £1billion of investment to support economic growth will be earmarked for the region and it is estimated that 29,000 jobs could be created. This is fantastic news for the area and demonstrates what can be achieved when all layers of government work together on priorities such as economic development. Sport and pitches strategy - As Depute Convener of Sport, Leisure & Culture I am delighted to be working hard on the development of Renfrewshire’s Sport Strategy and alongside this our plan to invest £5million in upgrading pitches in the area. Details will be announced this month. Traffic Issues - Traffic safety concerns in Crosslee have existed for some time and myself, the Community Council and others have raised these a number of times. I was pleased to secure the continued placement of the driver feedback sign on Houston Road, however, there have been two accidents on the bridge and it seems this is becoming a regular occurrence. Furthermore, I have been contacted by a number of parents who remain very concerned about the lack of a complete pavement on Whirlie Road - a popular route for taking children to school and also to access the fantastic new play park. I requested senior officials consider what could be done to remedy this and I am pleased that they will resource the completion of this pavement and they will now consult on the specifics of their plans. Planning - Many villagers will be aware of a series of planning applications which have been submitted following the Scottish Government’s approval of the Local Development Plan and it’s associated zoning of green belt land as suitable for housing. An exhibition by the developer Stewart Milne Homes will be held in the Carrick Centre on 2nd September between 12.30 and 8pm relating to an application for a significant housing development on the land adjacent to Strathgryffe Tennis Club. Readers may be aware I objected. Both to this aspect of the Local Development Plan and also to the application to build at Lonend. To keep up to date with local issues and my work for the area, feel free to ‘like’ my Facebook page at: Www Facebook.com/CouncillorStuartClark Surgeries: Thursday 4th September, 7pm, Linwood High School, Tuesday 16th September, 7pm, Tweedie Hall, Linwood, Wednesday, 17th September, 6.30pm, Carrick Centre, Houston.

Hopefully this will have created good photo opportunities that will be made into AVs for our coming session. We start back on Monday 8th September at 7.30pm in the Carrick Centre, Houston. Our first meeting is a get-together to catch up on what has been happening over the summer and to check the programme for next session. Visitors and new members are always welcome.

Summer must be almost over! Yes all the signs are there at Houston and Killellan Kirk as the BB have already enrolled Anchor, Junior and Company Section members.
Annual Coffee Morning - Saturday 6th September, 10am till 12noon in the Church Hall.
Tea, coffee and home-baking are to be anticipated and breakfast rolls will also be on sale. You will be able to enjoy such varied attractions as tombola, games of many kinds including console games, and the bottle stall among many other attractions. In fact, all the Kirk’s many organisations are stirring for a busy season ahead. Details of opening meetings and plans will follow next month!
Public Exhibition of Houston Housing Proposals
The Harvest Thanksgiving Service will take place on Sunday 21st September, although let’s hope there will be plenty of fine late summer weather to enjoy before then. We are already alerting artists to be ready for the Art Exhibition and Sale, to be held on Saturday 1st November. Up to 4 paintings are invited from local artists. We look forward to another fine display of local artistic talent!
A public exhibition about proposals for housing on land to the north and east of Fleming Road in Houston is to be held in the village’s Carrick Centre on Tuesday 2nd September. The site is already allocated for housing in the Renfrewshire Local Development Plan (LDP) which is expected to be adopted soon. The development will plug the gap between the rear of houses on Burnlea Crescent and the access to the tennis and squash club further to the west. Now the developer behind the proposal, Stewart Milne Homes, is preparing detailed plans for the site and the exhibition will provide the opportunity for local people to view and comment on these before any planning application is formally submitted to Renfrewshire Council. As well as viewing the detailed proposals people will be able to speak with representatives of the company and the design team. The Carrick Centre is conveniently located on Main Street in Houston and the exhibition will be open from 12.30pm until 8pm on the day. It is hoped that people will come along and find out more about what is proposed. There will be an opportunity to leave written comments at the exhibition or to submit these at a later date. Renfrewshire Council’s summer recess is now over and the normal cycle of meetings commenced on the 18th August. A report seeking approval to consult on a proposal to revise the current catchment arrangements between St Fillan’s and Our Lady of Peace Primary Schools was discussed at the Education Board on the 21st August. If approved, after full consultation, this would now allow all denominational pupils living in Houston to attend their local denominational school (St Fillan’s PS) and eliminates an anomaly that has been present for many years since the realigning of the catchment area for Gryffe High and Houston PS to include all Houston pupils. I was invited along to the official opening of the new Tweedie Hall and Linwood library on Thursday 14th August and this new facility along with the Tesco store and ancillary shops has transformed this area of Linwood. Have you registered to vote in the Referendum on 18th September? If not you have to be registered to vote by midnight on Tuesday 2nd September. A registration form can be downloaded from www.aboutmyvote.co.uk The next meeting of the Houston,Crosslee, Linwood, Riverside and Erskine Local Area Committee is scheduled for Tuesday 2nd September. Surgeries: 2nd Tuesday of the month in Brookfield Village Hall from 6pm to 6.30pm then in Houston Village Hall from 7pm to 7.45pm. Contact: phone 01505 610018, email: cllr.allan.noon@renfrewshire.gov.uk or call Renfrewshire Council on 0300 300 1265.
Art Sale & Exhibition Sat 1st November, 11am- 4pm Houston & Killellan Kirk

OUTDOORS news It’s the Bee’s Knees Part of Brighter Bridge of Weir’s philosophy is to encourage the diversity of wildlife in the area and, as well as brightening our village, selecting the right types of plants and flowers can help us with that. We’ve noticed a considerably increased amount of bee activity around some of our projects recently and this is good news. Bees are responsible for pollinating more than a third of Britain’s food crops. But last year experts estimated that 30% of the UK’s bees did not survive the winter. And that continued a worrying trend of annual decline since evidence was first gathered in 2006. It is believed that there are various causes including use of pesticides, large-scale agricultural practices, habitat erosion, and weather. Steps are being taken by various agencies to address these matters, but we can all help. All of the keen gardeners among our volunteers are using fewer pesticides and organic, species-directed weed killers. Many are planting known bee-friendly plants in their own gardens. Bees are now a protected species, but right now they need more than protection - they need encouragement, too. And now for something completely different. On October 4th, Brighter Bridge of Weir is holding a Fun Casino Night in the British Legion Club. They held one last year and it was declared a great success - so much so that this year’s event will be even bigger. The event is run by the professional croupiers of Pink Cocktails Fun Casino, and they really are Fun with a capital ‘F’! Tickets are on sale soon at £5 per head (or can be purchased at the door on the night), and that gets each entrant £5 worth of Fun Casino chips for the Blackjack and Roulette tables, and all money raised goes to Brighter Bridge of Weir. Now that’s a win win, surely? More chips can be purchased on the night. There is no cash involved (other than the purchase of Fun Money to buy additional chips). At the end of the night prizes will be awarded to those with the highest value of chips. By the time this issue of the Advertizer is distributed, more details will be available throughout the village and on Brighter Bridge of Weir’s website and Facebook page. See you there! As we look back on a wonderful July and August, the weather brought visitors in large numbers to the estate. Our children’s play areas were certainly put through their paces, especially the pirate ship and our new under 6 playarea. Our gardens have shot into bloom with visitors coming from far and near to spend a relaxing few hours strolling through the gardens and enjoying refreshments in our tea room. Opening times for the tea room are weekends 10am to 5pm David, our Head Gardner, has been hard at work ensuring the plants and shrubs receive plenty of water in the hot July and August sun. The Rangers have been delivering a host of entertaining and educational events to nurseries and school children attending the estate and our Mini Beast hunt, Den building, Scavenger hunt and first Nature walks have been enjoyed not only by school parties, but also those having birthday parties at the estate. Beowulf have been a fantastic addition to our various events especially our Pirate Day.
Volunteering in the garden
We are constantly recruiting volunteers to help in the maintenance of the garden, propagation of plants, and watering duties. Our volunteers have many different reasons for volunteering: to gain experience and training in horticulture, to gain general work experience; (improving job prospects and employability), to improve communicational, organisational, and people skills, to de-stress, or simply because they have a love of plants, gardening and fresh air. All age groups can apply to become volunteers, if you would like to join our team on a regular or casual basis, then please approach me in the estate or call reception for more details. Many thanks go to all our present and previous volunteers; your help is greatly appreciated.

Kilbarchan Beekeepers Assc
General Beekeeping - At this time of the year, the honey flow has come to an end and there is a smaller group of plants providing essential sustenance to the Honey Bees, and the colonies are starting to slow down their reproduction. Most beekeepers will have taken any surplus honey off the hive and extracted it. Plants flowering at this time of year beneficial to pollinators are Japanese Anemones, Asters, Michaelmas Daises, and Dahlias. Five Simple Steps To Help Bees - (source https://www.gov.uk/government/
news/bees-needs-public-urged-to-supportpollinators) The public are being urged by the Environment Department (Defra) to take five practical steps to protect all our bees and other pollinating insects. Defra’s Guidelines are: 1. Grow more flowers shrubs and trees; 2. Leave patches of land to grow wild; 3. Cut grass less often; 4. Avoid disturbing or destroying nesting or hibernating insects; 5. Think carefully about whether to use pesticides
New Beekeepers - By late summer those who have shown an interest in beekeeping have their first colonies of bees. Two of a few new KBA Beekeepers are shown the evening they received their own bees. Above right, Elaine Porteous, and right Susie Kennedy.
Interested? - KBA meet during the winter months in the Steeple hall at 7.30pm. If you are interested in beekeeping you will be more than welcome to join us. The programme is as follows: -
Colourful Kilmacolm We do hope you have been enjoying the flowering plants in the Piazza and at Birkmyre Park, but even as the good summer weather has helped the plants look their best, our committee is looking ahead and planning the next phase. As part of this preparation, we will be applying for further funding and to back up our bid we have to state how we measure our success. It would be easy to say ‘Lots of people have told us they like our displays’, but we felt we needed to have something more accurate than anecdotal comments, and so we recently conducted a survey of 100 people in the centre of the village. Reference has been made before in these pages to differing views held by local residents and so we tried to canvass a cross-section of the community. Of the 100 questioned, 4 disliked the Piazza displays (3 strongly) and 96 liked them (84 strongly). Some respondents mentioned that they had initially had reservations about the planters, but had been won round by our displays. Taste is of course a very subjective matter, but a 96% approval rate is surely a reasonable measure of success. Do remember that if you want to have a say in what we do, our membership is open to all and we will listen to your views. We were delighted recently to see wedding photographs being taken beside the planters by a party holding their reception in the Cargill Centre. Our latest photos and information can be viewed on our website, www. colourfulkilmacolm.org.uk. To find out more contact Peter (01505 872448) or Diane (01505 872611).

‘Walk About a Bit’
Since the first walk in 2003 hundreds of members and friends of the Health Walking Groups in Renfrewshire, East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde & North Ayrshire have taken part. The event showcases the year round partnerships between the Feeling Fitter Networks and the Regional Park. The route is 10 miles or 16 km long and follows the current cycle track route 7, the historic line of the Paisley Canal and provides stunning views of the local countryside. Registration for the walk is from 9.15am at Paisley Canal Station Restaurant and the walk starts at 10am, reaching Castle Semple for approximately 3pm. There will be qualified walk leaders accompanying the group from start to finish. There will be water stations and rest points every 2 miles, namely in Elderslie, Johnstone, Kilbarchan and Howwood. For those that feel a 10 mile walk is a bit much there are plenty of exit points along the way to get the bus or the train home. Once the walk reaches Clyde Muirshiel’s Castle Semple Centre there will be FREE refreshments plus a medal to celebrate your achievement.

Windows on Wildlife
The Windows on Wildlife Project aims to bring people closer to wildlife, gaining a unique insight to the furry & feathered inhabitants of Castle Semple Country Park. Project Officer Hayley Douglas gives us an update.
Event updates - September sees the return of the After Dark guided Walk. This was such a popular event last year that we have decided to hold two walks. The first will be on 13th September and the second on 20th September. Come along and join our nocturnal guided walk into the woods where we will see what mammals, birds and insects come out when we are heading to bed. Torch and stout footwear advised. The walk takes place between 7.30pm and 9.30pm, starting at Castle Semple Visitor Centre. Booking is FREE, but essential and you can do so by calling 01505 842 882 Ex 20. The final Big WoW Weekend takes place on Saturday 13th at RSPB Lochwinnoch and Sunday 14th at Castle Semple Visitor Centre. This is a drop in exhibition which allows you to have the chance to view unseen footage of the animals and birds found in Lochwinnoch as well as having a chance to see what equipment the project uses. It runs between 10am and 4pm, hope to see you there. Wildlife News - The badger cubs, Rough and Tumble, have all of a sudden appeared to have grown up. Isn’t it amazing how that happens! They are now about ¾ grown and their muzzles are no longer short and stubby. One also appears to have a bumpy bit on its muzzle which makes it easy to ID even when I can’t see its full face. Although they are growing up they will probably stay around the sett at least until Christmas and they still rely on their parents. There has been a bit of a flea outbreak at the sett, but badgers are very clean animals and know how to deal with this. They have been filmed removing the bedding from their main sett and have for the meantime moved up to their satellite sett. This move will interrupt the flea development cycle so they should be back at the main sett soon. It’s nothing to worry about though as fleas only become a problem for sick badgers. Barn Owls in the Regional Park seem to be having a fantastic season so far with 19 chicks at five nest sites. This is great news as numbers went down after the snowy winters of 2010 and 2011. If you see a Barn Owl you can report the sighting to The Barn Owl Trust who are conducting a nationwide survey www.barnowlsurvey.org.uk You may have noticed that the greylag goose goslings are getting really big and I have started to put their rings on. We also have our own wee swan family at Castle Semple with two little cygnets. The male has been busy chasing the other swans away and that’s why not many swans are being seen at Castle Semple at the moment, but don’t worry I’m sure they will be back.

If so, we’re looking for fundraising volunteers during Scottish Animal Week, which runs from 1st-6th September. We need people to shake a collection tin in their local area, either by carrying out door to door collections during the Monday and Friday or collecting on their nearest high street on Saturday 5 t h September. Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “As an animal welfare charity, we receive no government or lottery funding, which means we depend on public donations to continue our vital work.

Dental Disease
leads to inflammation of the gums, called gingivitis, and if left unchecked progresses to periodontal disease.
Dental disease is one of the most common medical conditions seen in veterinary practice, with over 80% of dogs and 70% of cats older than three years having some degree of dental disease.
Periodontal disease leads to formation of pockets around the tooth attachments and gum recession. It is a painful condition and can result in tooth loss. Infection in the mouth around the teeth can also enter the blood stream and spread to other organs, most commonly the heart and liver.
Signs that your pet has dental disease include bad breath, a painful mouth, difficulty eating, loose teeth, tooth loss, pawing or rubbing at the mouth, inflamed or bleeding gums, yellow or brown tartar on teeth, increased dribbling of saliva and teeth chattering. Your pet may display one or more of these signs.
The best way to prevent tartar build up and hence prevent periodontal disease is to brush your pets’ teeth, ideally on a daily basis. It is important to use a dog/cat toothpaste that is safe to be swallowed (human toothpaste contains fluoride and should not be used in pets). There are also special chews and treats which can help reduce plaque and tartar and some pet foods are specially formulated to assist in plaque removal. There are also additives available for food or water which can help reduce the build up of plaque.
The most common form of dental disease seen in dogs and cats is periodontal disease. This is inflammation and infection of the tissues surrounding the teeth. It is due to an accumulation of plaque and tartar on the teeth. Plaque is formed when bacteria present in the mouth multiply on the tooth surface forming a biofilm. If allowed to remain on the tooth surface the plaque thickens and becomes mineralised forming tartar. The accumulation of tartar
46-47 PETS_240_SEPT14.ind.indd 46
Once tartar has formed a scale and polish under general anaesthetic by a veterinary surgeon may be necessary to remove the plaque and tartar. A dental hygiene plan using one or more of the products described above should be instituted after a scale and polish to help prevent recurrence of the problem. SCHOOLS news Woodlands Day Nursery Woodlands would like to welcome all the new children and the return of those who have been off nursery during the summer holidays. Rising 5’s wished a fond farewell to their children moving onto school, both children and staff enjoyed when they revisited, looking very smart in their new school uniforms. Rising 5’s are now welcoming children moving from the Tweenie Room and as they continue to enjoy new experiences, they have also the opportunity to learn French with their very own French tutor Elspeth. To start this month, the children will be covering their chosen topic of ‘All About Me’ in which they will be talking about themselves, families, pets and where the live. The Tweenies have enjoyed their Summer programme during the holidays and this month’s topic is also ‘All About Me’ as they too welcome new friends to the room. The travelling Teds ‘Tommy’ and ‘Tilly’ might even visit their homes at weekends to share the children home life. The Babies have completed their summer programme and had a fantastic time during the active week. They had great fun during the nature week making beautiful mini beasts, yummy spider cakes and had lots of fun at the ‘Ugly Bug Ball’. The highlight was ‘Messy Week’ in which they participated in lots of colourful mess including body painting, rainbow slime and making magical colours using water guns. Everyone is now looking forward to continuing to explore the local woodland area and watching the transformation it changes into Autumn colours. The babies will also enjoying getting physical with Rachael from the Song and Dance Factory who has returned to the nursery with her toy dog named Rover who has taught the children how to sit, lie down and roll over. Kilbarchan Community Nursery The Nursery has enjoyed a well earned summer holiday and would like to use this opportunity to thank many local business for their support over the last year. As a community nursery we need to fundraise around £6000 each year just to make ends meet. We would like to say a massive thank you to Bobbins, The Glenleven, The Trust and Papa Macs who all donated several prizes to our fundraising events. Our thanks also go to E Williams Butchers, Twisted Willow Florist, Andy Stark Photography, Newfield Chemist, The Cutting Crew, Room 19, QT Fitness, Patricks - Johnstone, Robert Shaw Mortgages, The Bowfield Hotel and Sheridans Newsagents. They all donated some brilliant raffle prizes and helped us to raise nearly £6,500. A huge thanks also go to our parents who supported our fundraising events and had a lot of fun along the way. All our new children are settling in well and hopefully we’ll have lots of fun activities for all the family throughout this year too. 2014 sees Kilbarchan Community Nursery celebrate its 30th birthday! Started in 1984 by a group of parents in the village, the nursery was originally placed on the site of the old school and moved into their current home in June 1999. Thirty years on, the nursery is still going strong, still run by a committee of parents, and is a well-loved and valuable community resource that looks after so many of our youngest Habbies. At 6pm on the 19th September, we will be celebrating at the nursery and we’d like to invite you to join us for our birthday bash! We’re especially keen to share our birthday celebrations with those that have a special connection to the nursery. Are you a past parent, committee member, staff or pupil, or do you know someone that is? It might be time to dust off the old profiles, look out your nursery memorabilia and have a giggle at some old photos. Contact: admin@kilbarchancommunitynursery. org.uk, we’re looking forward to hearing from you!

Gryffe High School Fifty S4 pupils progress with their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award and about twenty S5 and S6 pupils are also working towards a Silver Award. The pupils embarked on a teambuilding day at Erskine by the River Clyde. For their second walk, the pupils were on location at the Greenock Cut where they were developing their map reading, orienteering and teambuilding skills. The pupils worked hard in all kinds of weather, sun, rain and hail! Several Gryffe staff accompanied Duke of Edinburgh trainers and the pupils seemed to thoroughly enjoy the experience. The photo shows new S4 pupils enjoying a well deserved rest after getting to grip with putting up their tents. They were on Expedition Practice at Clyde Muirshiel Country. Photograph – Mrs M Stark
E: INFO@ADVERTIZER.CO.UK Dragons Den S3 Cinema
We are a group of S4 pupils who have been taking part in this social enterprise for the past 6 months and are planning to open a cinema in our school for the public to use with the funds we have recently just won in a National enterprise competition. Obviously there will be a small charge to customers however it will still be substantially cheaper than the local cinemas in this area. The cinema will be opening for its premier on Friday 19th September with a Robin Williams tribute night. We plan on showing Mrs Doubtfire and will be selling snacks, popcorn and juices throughout the night. The tickets will cost £2.50 and the sweets will work as a Tuck Shop. Because this will be our opening night there will be some special promotions on offer for snacks etc. Doors open at 3.30pm and the assigned movie will begin at 4pm. S4 Gryffe High, Dragons Den Team.
Bridge of Weir Messy Church
Strawberry Field Nursery
Bridge of Weir Messy Church returns on Sunday 7th September at the earlier time of 4pm until 6pm. We look forward to welcoming everyone back and would love to see some new faces.
We have all been enjoying the beautiful sunshine. All or vegetables and flowers that we planted earlier are all blossoming. To tie in with the common wealth games we took a walk up to the village to see the Queens torch. When we arrived back at nursery we drew pictures off Clyde and made flags to hang around the nursery. We have being doing a variety of races and obstacle courses that we completed over the games. When the new term starts 18-3yrs will being doing a topic about fruit and vegetables. The 3-5yrs will be developing our mud kitchen.
The theme will be Harvest and “The feeding of the 5000”. We look forward to feeding everyone that turns up!! Please just turn up but if you have any questions, contact Catherine Daly on 07980 649377
Renfrewshire Witch Hunt at Greenbank House On Saturday 27th July, RWH1697 helped to animate the wonderful Greenbank House and Gardens in Clarkston. A National Trust for Scotland initiative, the day involved Northlight Heritage, Renfrewshire Local History Forum, Glasgow Archaeological Society and community based organisations in an archaeology and heritage day. It was an appropriate event from a Commonwealth Games perspective as there can be few other properties or projects with links to the tobacco and slave trades (with all the uneasy implications and associated history). Glasgow Merchant Robert Allason built Greenbank House in the 1760’s. With one brother owning a tobacco plantation in Virginia and another based in Nigeria supplying slaves to work on the plantation, the three brothers had the perfect triangulation of merchant wealth built on the trafficking of people and drugs. In the 21st Century, we don’t tend to dwell on the dark side of Glasgow’s wealth but it is perhaps divine justice that Robert Allason and his wife died in the early 1800’s, bankrupt and penniless having been tricked out of money by the brothers. RWH1697 actors animated the dining room, parlour and conservatory inside the house, as well as the fabulous grounds complete with fountains and flower gardens.

Zoo lab came to visit us with some exotic creatures including a tree frog, snake, a giant snail and a tarantula! Now the holidays are over we are welcoming our children back with the addition of lots of new children. The nursery will have an open week from the 8th September and we would like to invite anyone to come along and see some of the activities that take place in the nursery.
Out-of-school care
We have just concluded our school holiday care program. The highlight for many of the children was cheering the Queens Commonwealth baton through Houston. The baton carriers, David Milligan and Tricia McKinnon, were enthusiastically welcomed by the boys and girls of both the Nursery and out-of-school School. With the schools now back the next holiday club will take place the 18th September. Both St Fillans primary and Bridge of Weir Primary are being used as polling stations for the independence referendum, so we will be open to accept children displaced on this historic day. Anyone needing ‘extra’ day care should phone Sam on 01505 615315.

Karate Club open for business! The Shotokan Karate Club has relocated into Woodlands Primary School in Linwood. Training nights will remain the same (Monday & Thursday), however we have brought forward the training times following your feedback, therefore training on both nights will commence at 7pm and conclude at 9pm. The school is at the centre of the Linwood community, and I would hope that this might encourage new students, given the accessibility of the venue, and perhaps bolster our younger age groups which have suffered somewhat last year. Look forward to seeing you there!

Birkmyre girl selected for Scotland U19 squad Birkmyre and Gryffe HS player Siobhan McMillan has been selected to represent Scotland in this years U19 7’s competition at the Sainsbury’s School’s games. This is the second year that a Birkmyre player has represented Scotland at the games and we hope that some of last year’s U15’s will step up to the mark next season. Siobhan’s younger sister Louise represented Scotland last year, but was deemed by the SRU to be too young to play this year. Hopefully Louise will be able to join Siobhan in the U20 squad later this year. The School games runs over three days this year and will be held in Manchester, more information at www.2014schoolgames.com
The Ladies Section have enjoyed lovely Summer golf. Our Ladies were not put off by the leaden skies and heavy rain. 39 ladies donned their waterproofs and all teams completed the course and came in with very damp score cards but very big smiles. First Prize went to Jen Owen and Jim Clark, 2nd were May and Billy Hunter and 3rd prize went to or lady Captain Moira Galletly and her partner Captain Jack Halkett . A great time was had by all! In sharp contrast, our Ladies Open was played in lovely weather. Fifty one couples played and our raffle for breakthrough cancer raised £576. The winners were Denise Cowan and Maureen Cook (Ranfurly Castle) who were first out and their score of 39 points remained in the lead for the whole day. Alison Thompson (Old Ranfurly) and Jane Cowan (Gourock) were runners up with 38 points. Well done to Birgit Clark and her team for organising a very successful day.

Sporting Blog
by Lesley Handley Get Out Strong, Commit July saw Glasgow host the Commonwealth Games and Scotland upped their performance to win a record 53 medals! Some people I spoke to or train with were not really taken in by the Games, whereas others watched every minute of it they could either on TV or in person. However, nearly everyone I spoke to appreciated the athleticism that was involved. Most of the athletes that walked out to perform had amazing physiques, a desire to do their best and had a 100% commitment level. Athletes don’t train or prepare for things for 4 weeks, 6 weeks or 12 weeks, they prepare their whole lives! They also centre their goals around athletic performance, not aesthetics. Their physique develops purely as a byproduct of them committing to their training and fuelling their bodies appropriately with nutritious foods. The highlight of the games for me was watching the 800m silver medallist Lynsey Sharp. The bold runner was in hospital till 5.30am the morning of her race, and emotionally told reporters at the finish line that the last year had been filled with hurdles, but she was determined to overcome them. Written on her hand was the phrase “GET OUT STRONG, COMMIT”. And that’s exactly what she did. You don’t have to be an athlete to have the same viewpoints and training principles. Fitness and nutrition shouldn’t be a 4, 6 or 12 week stint; it should become a permanent lifestyle change, as that is when you gain the most out of it. You shouldn’t always set aesthetic goals – set a performance one and let the weight loss and muscle gain happen regardless. GET OUT STRONG AND COMMIT can apply to you! You are going to face obstacles, they are going to test your resolve, and honestly, many people tend to give up and quit. Next time you feel that happening to you remember those 5 words, reset your goal and keep going! For any help or advice on nutrition or Personal Training contact me on 07512 355 877 or e-mail lesley_personal_trainer@hotmail.co.uk

Successful Summer for Strathgryffe Girls Two young Strathgryffe players have been in winning ways over the summer with an impressive tally of domestic singles and doubles titles between them at both their respective age groups and in the Ladies categories. Anna Daisley (15) has won Under 16 singles titles at the Newlands Open, Giffnock Open, Scottish Closed and West of Scotland Open adding three U18 titles from the same tournaments and winning a senior title at the Whitecraigs Easter tournament. She is now ranked in the top 30 in the UK at U16 level. Katherine McPhie (16) has also had a good summer winning an U18 title at the Giffnock Open and finishing runner up at the Newlands Open. Castle Semple Sailing Club Commodore’s Trophy A total of 11 boats, comprising 5 GPs, 2 enterprises, Vortex, Vago, N12 and the “mighty” RS Vision took part in the racing (plus the “Babe Magnet” hovering at the back of the fleet). We managed the obligatory 2 races before lunch although the first race was a shortened course as the wind more or less dropped away. The GPs had a tough competition between them with Peter, Paul and Arthur vying for lead position. Once most of us were enjoying soup made by the Commodore himself, no less, and very tasty it was too (Fiona is now relieved of her soup making duties!) and other goodies, there was a sudden cry from the pontoon that the “Golden Ticket” had inexplicably broken loose and was on a free ticket of its own down/ up the loch. Fortunately the “mighty” Vision was close at hand to perform rescue duties which was lucky as Paul’s disinterested comment was “oh someone will get it” . Since Paul was close to leading the racing he wasn’t quite sure if it was sabotage or not.
