THIS month
It’s been a busy few weeks around the area since the last issue. Surprising really, since so many people have been away on holiday. Anyone enjoying a ‘staycation’ this year must be delighted with this beautiful weather. Of course, the Queen’s Baton Relay travelling through the west coast of Scotland has brought out the crowds. Through East Renfrewshire, Inverclyde and West Renfrewshire, people turned out to wave their flags and cheer on the runners carrying the baton through each village and town. Inverclyde managed to get possibly the wettest day all month, but that didn’t deter the fans who were out cheering and waving. There were hundreds of runners covering various stretches - too many to name them all! But you all know who you are and well done for volunteering and carrying out your duties so well. Our office is in Bridge of Weir, above Bernie’s Cafe Deli, and we had a wonderful vantage point to watch the procession go by on Main Street. The lads and lassies of Brighter Bridge of Weir were out the night before sprucing up the baskets and planters before the cameras fell on the village for the Relay. And they did us proud - the flowers look wonderful and do indeed Brighten up the village. We’re sad to see that there are now four ‘for sale/let’ signs on Main Street though. Jackie Semple is retiring so his shoe shop is up for sale - hopefully as a going concern. The Weir is up for let again and there are two corner shops going to auction on 6th August. The former newsagent is still fitted out as a shop and comes with a basement flat, so could be a shop again or maybe converted to residential. The other property, prior to being an obvious commercial venture, was a discrete and attractive residential flat, with off street parking and private gardens. Hopefully some private buyer will see the opportunity and improve that wee corner of the village.

Finally, on the subject of shops and villages, in a recent research project completed for The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) about the value of a £1 spent locally, they discovered that for every £1 spent locally around 50p to 70p of that money recirculates back into the local economy. For the same £1 spent out of town or online only 5p trickles back to the local community. Think on this when choosing where to shop. Online is relatively easy and we’re all guilty of the big weekly shop at the supermarket, but if we don’t use our local shops, they will disappear. And, in my experience, the service you get from a local retailer far outweighs the impersonal checkout, whether clicking or bleeping.

Local Artist unveils Sculpture in Aberdeen A striking and vibrant artwork was unveiled last month at the entrance to Prime Four Business Park in Kingswells, Aberdeen. The installation was created by Prime Four Artist-in-Residence, Rosemary Beaton, and uses the oil, gas and renewable energy sectors as a source of inspiration for the design. Prime Four has established itself as a significant hub for the energy industry with majors Nexen, Transocean, Apache already based at the Business Park, and Premier Oil, De Vere Hotels, OneSubsea and Statoil to follow over the coming year. The piece, entitled “Present & Future” is the first in a series of installations that will be designed and constructed as the Park expands. The artwork makes a prominent visual statement alongside a new Prime Four sign at the entrance to the Park. Artist-in-Residence and Kilmacolm resident Rosemary Beaton said: “My intention was to create a visually interesting and thought provoking art piece which explores the relationship between man and the energy he cultivates from beneath the waves. “I have tried to encompass imagery that explores man’s endeavour in the energy industries. Wave movement in particular seemed prominent in this thought process and I was drawn to the idea of bringing the fruit of man’s achievements to shore. This is very relevant to the story of Aberdeen’s success and is highly pertinent to Prime Four given its status as a foremost business location for the energy industry within the City.” Graeme Bone, Managing Director of developers Drum Property Group commented, “It has long been recognised that a great working environment has a quantifiable effect on business performance, and Prime Four has been designed to deliver a socially and creatively stimulating environment for staff based at the park. Purchase of an Automated External Defibrillator
We have now over 30 people from our community through the free two hour course run by Liz Simpson and Morag Thow. The group were taken through a range of Emergency Life Support Skills (ELS) including: • Dealing with an unconscious casualty • Cardiac arrest • Suspected heart attack • Choking • Serious bleeding We have been successful in our grant application from the British Heart Foundation for an automated external defibrillator (AED) for the villages. An AED is a portable electronic device that automatically diagnoses the lifethreatening cardiac arrhythmias. We have had support from the Lochwinnoch Community Council to help fund the application to the British Heart Foundation. More information will follow on where the AED will be positioned in the village and extra training opportunities for AED use.

The Johnstone Club - Young Author Competition
The Johnstone Club has recently held the Young Author Competition which is always very popular with the teaching staff and pupils of our local secondary schools. On this occasion the participating schools were Castlehead, Johnstone, Linwood and St. Benedict’s High Schools. In total there were twenty four entries which were divided into under 16 and over 16 age groups. Glasgow welcomes the World Pipe Band Championships back to Glasgow Green on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th August. Friday’s competition programme consists of the Grade 1 Qualifiers.
The very difficult task of judging the entries was undertaken by two of our members, Tom McKay and Jim Sharp, together with guest judge Barry Kergon. Marking was carried out to strict criteria and the winners were declared to be:

Thanks also to Bobby Hart for his very efficient organisation of the contest.
Sma’ Shot Day
Saturday 5th July was a glorious day for the annual Sma’ Shot Day parade and festival in Paisley Town Centre. This year was a very special one as it follows hard on the heels of the launch last week of Paisley’s new Heritage Assets Strategy. Renfrewshire Council has launched its new strategy having realised the potential for Paisley’s future prosperity lies in making the most of the stories and buildings from our past. Sma Shot Day celebrates the tale of the striking mill workers who refused to allow the bosses to get away with not paying them for the hidden Sma’ Shot thread (the one that they claimed bound the fabric together). This story is one of many that make up the rich tapestry of Renfrewshire’s history. The founder of the thread industry was Christian Shaw who famously accused almost 30 people of witchcraft and went on to establish the first thread mills in the area: Bargarran Mills. Renfrewshire Witch Hunt 1697 (members in costume pictured here) is a local project dedicated to the retelling of that story and the celebration of the thread industry that she founded.

RNIB needs your help to support Blind and Partially Sighted People
“I remember just after diagnosis, I had lost my job, my income, my identity as a teacher, my driving licence, my social network, my house, my independence and I had sunk into a deep depression, whilst struggling to look after a new baby and two toddlers.” Imagine what it must be like to be told that you are going to lose some or all of your vision… Every day in Scotland, ten people begin to lose their sight, but only one in six will be offered support and counselling, despite the devastating impact it can have on a person’s life. You could help us reach more people and make life better for those in Renfrewshire who are living with sight loss. RNIB Scotland is the leading charity supporting blind and partially sighted people, and we are looking for your help to raise the funds needed to continue our work in Renfrewshire and throughout Scotland. We provide many support services to blind and partially sighted people including children’s and family services, day care for people with complex needs, Talking Books, and support and counselling at the point of diagnosis. However all this comes at a cost. If you could spare a couple of hours a month, we would love to have you on board in our Inverclyde Fundraising Group and will provide you with full training and support throughout your volunteering journey. We are looking for people who have skills in administration, finance, media, PR or would like to be part of a team who are really making a difference to blind and partially sighted people,

Hannah Simpson aims to trek to Everest Base Camp Hannah Simpson is fundraising for Help for Heroes. Having left St Columba’s in 2010, I attended the University of Birmingham where I was given the opportunity to take on the challenge of a lifetime. In September 2014, I am undertaking a trek to Everest Base Camp to raise money for Help for Heroes. The challenge is an 11 day trek starting at Kathmandu up to the peak of Kala Patthar at 5600 m, via Base Camp at 5360m. This is the biggest expedition I’ll have ever undertaken and I cannot wait! I ran the Birmingham half marathon last year to raise money and I would be extremely grateful for donations towards this worthy cause, however small, to help me reach my target at http://www.bmycharity.com/ hannahjsimpson Help for Heroes offers comprehensive support to those who have suffered life-changing injuries and illnesses whilst serving our country. The money raised by the hugely generous public has been used to support our wounded, but there is still so much more to do. They are still battling and we won’t let them battle alone.

Irish Cycle Challenge for Teenage Cancer Trust
We did it! All 8 cyclists completed the 450-mile cycle with a killer climb up to the finishing point at Malin Head. Strictly returns to St Vincent’s Hospice
It’s your chance to dance and support local patient care at St Vincent’s Hospice on Friday 20th March 2015 when Strictly Come Prancing returns to the Normandy Hotel. Register now to be one of the Strictly stars in a fun-filled evening of glitz and glamour, and raise vital funds for St Vincent’s Hospice. Gryffe Camera Club The club has continued to be active over the summer months. Instead of the weekly indoor meetings there have been Wednesday evening outdoor visits to scenic spots in search of winning shots. On 14th June, club members become waitresses in the tea tent at the Bridge of Weir show, and did brisk business throughout the afternoon. On July 5th, we had our annual club outing - this year to see the jousting display at Linlithgow Palace. On a beautiful sunny day in a lovely setting we watched a colourful and entertaining spectacle of knights in armour-plus a ‘rabble army’ of children recruited from the crowd. A good day out. Lifetime mortgages are a way of borrowing money on the value of your home. The amount borrowed will be repaid when you die or depending on the lender when you go into long-term care. They usually work on a fixed rate of interest and the interest is either added to the loan, increasing the total amount you owe, or it can be paid as you go thus keeping the original mortgage balance the same. There are some variable rate lifetime mortgages, but they offer less certainty. This means that if you choose to allow the interest to be added to the loan then the alarming possibility of owing more than the value of your home does exist, however, most lenders have a no-negative-equity guarantee scheme that ensure you never have to repay more than what the property is worth. Not everyone is eligible for this borrowing. Lenders impose strict criteria, including a minimum age of 55 or 60. Age also affects the percentage of your property you can borrow against. At 65, it may be as little as 20 percent. There are stipulations about the minimum loan amounts and the value of your property. Lifetime mortgages come in different forms. The lump-sum (or roll-up) mortgage means you pay no interest until you die or move into residential care. Drawdown mortgages are more flexible and potentially cheaper as you take a smaller sum at the start with the option to borrow more as required. Other variations, including interest repayment options and enhanced mortgages for those with lower-than-average life expectancies exist. Lifetime mortgages, while allowing you to benefit from the value of your home, do have drawbacks. Early repayment can come with costs and penalties and, while some mortgages are portable, moving house could be difficult. Drawing money in the form of a lifetime mortgage, could affect your means-tested benefits such as pension credit or council tax benefit. However it also offers borrowers the potential to remain in their existing property whilst at the same time allowing them to enjoy funds held within their property for whatever use they wish.

Gryffe Valley Rotary At the end of a busy year Mike Farley handed over the reins of Gryffe Valley Rotary to new President Angus Matheson. Looking back on the last 12 months, Mike reflected on a successful year for the club with the highlight undoubtedly being the visit of the Princess Royal to Castle Semple to hand over and name the specially adapted dinghy which Gryffe Valley had donated for disabled sailing on the loch.
the UK sailing up the Clyde from Greenock to the centre of Glasgow via Braehead as part of the build up to the Commonwealth Games. One of the dinghies was the one provided by Gryffe Valley and it was sailed by Vicky McMillan from the Disability Resource Centre in Paisley. In a hugely successful and well supported event, Vicky won the prize as the most improved sailor! Looking forwards, Angus confirmed that the major objective for the next year was to sustain recent growing trends in membership numbers and fundraising whilst delivering on the wide range of ongoing community projects. The major challenge would be to complete the WOW! Project (Wheelchairs On Water!) which involves raising a total of some £23,000 to buy a roll-on roll-off powered boat to enabled disabled sailors who are restricted to their wheelchairs to get out onto the water at Castle Semple. Thanks to the fundraising events and donations mentioned above, over half of this sum has already been secured and hopefully WOW! Can be delivered within the next few months.
One of the final events of the year was another fund raising lunch held at Mike and Kay’s house and garden when some 70 guests enjoyed some great food in glorious weather and raised over £1500 in aid of Olivia Giles charity “500 Miles”, which provides prosthetic and orthotic devises to the disabled in Malawi, Zambia and Zanzibar. This final event contributed to the record sum of over £22,000 which Gryffe Valley Rotary had raised during the year to fund its range of projects in support of local and worldwide communities. In addition to the popular BBQ, Burns Supper, Curry Night and 10K run events, a myriad of raffles, collections and other activities organised by the members all contributed to the total, and these efforts were supplemented by a number of generous donations from local businesses and Trusts. Barely had Angus taken office, than Gryffe Valley was out actively supporting the Race2theGames event organised by the Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. This involved 13 special dinghies from all over

What lovely weather we have had this summer with all the gala days and Commonwealth baton relay benefitting. The new Local Development Plan (LDP) was agreed at a meeting of the Planning and Property Policy Board in late June. Local residents may be concerned about the areas zoned for new housing. The Scottish Government Reporter, not content to approve the council’s recommendations for housing supply in Dargavel and Shillingworth, has identified 3 additional sites in the Green Belt for new housing. These are: Station Rd, Bishopton (50 units), Lawmarnock Road, BoW (9 units), Northbar, Florish Road, Erskine (200 units) There is no mention of the vacant site at Bull’s garage in the LDP. With schools already stretched to accommodate existing pupils and car parks and roads in the villages at capacity, I am shocked and dismayed at this surprise outcome. Furthermore the council will be required to review the housing land supply with guidelines on releasing more land from the Green Belt if they feel that there is not adequate housing land supply. I am looking into an idea to set up a Village Trust Fund in both Bridge of Weir and Langbank, to allow people to make donations towards the improvement of the village and village life. Such a trust would need trustees to manage both its investments and grants to local organisations. Please contact me if you would like to help with this.

Films at The Bridge
If you enjoy a good film why not try The Bridge in Bridge of Weir? The programme from August to December can be collected from the shop counter in The Bridge and films are open to everyone. Just turn up, there is no admission charge although donations are always welcome. The coming season is our most international with visits to Columbia, Afghanistan, Spain, France, Germany, the USA and an English country house. It includes two fine stories told in Spanish and two more in French. “Joyeux Noel” in December is particularly appropriate for the centenary of the first Christmas on the Western Front. We start with “Love in the Time of Cholera” based on the book written by Nobel prize-winning author Gabriel Garcia Marquez who died recently. “Belle Epoque” stars Penelope Cruz, “Gosford Park” has an all-star cast and “Chocolat” also has a great cast including Judi Dench and Juliette Binoche. Clint Eastwood directed and played the lead in “Gran Torino”.

Bishopton’s Brilliant Gala Day And Gala Week On Saturday 21st June, hundreds of people descended upon the Renfrewshire village of Bishopton, to attend the 42nd annual gala day. It was very well attended and the sunshine was an added attraction. A children’s treasure hunt was held throughout the week. The winners, announced at the gala day, were Isla Campbell (11), Zoe Kerr (10), Jamie Greenan (9) and Amy Kerr (8). They each received a ‘Commonwealth’ goodie bag. ‘Bishopton Day’ provided the community and the hundreds of visitors with a fantastic range of fun and entertainment at the village field. The crowd enjoyed a variety of entertainment, including Kilbarchan Pipe Band, Tai Chi demonstrations, skirmishes by the Glasgow Vikings; Bishopton Rugby Club’s display, children and ladies from Bishopton FC giving a football display, live music by members of Erskine Music Media Studio, dancing displays by the Lisa Marie School of Dance and the Natalie Burke Dance Army, professional wrestling, magicians, a demonstration from Peter Bowsher, champion chainsaw wood carver, performances by Renfrewshire Witch Hunt 1697, a vintage fire engine bouncy castles and of course lots of fund raising stalls. Throughout the afternoon entertainment was provided in the main arena and on the stage. Peter Bowsher’s world class chain-saw wood carving display proved to be very popular. A large audience watched him carve an eagle from a tree trunk. The eagle was raffled as a prize at the end of the Gala Day and won by Finn Rodger from Langbank. Surrounding the main arena was a vast array of charitable stalls, representing most of the community organisations, giving everyone the opportunity to win a prize or purchase a bargain. Most of the stalls reported brisk business with many selling out before the end of the gala day. The day ended with a prize draw, organised by Bishopton Travel and a separate draw by The Village Tea Room, Houston.
Bishopton Fun Run Winners On Wednesday 18th June in Bishopton, dozens of children and adults took part in the annual fun run, one or two laps on a designated route through the village, starting and finishing at the Community Centre. A separate toddlers’ event was also held. It was a very successful night for the Sutherland family from Bishopton, who scooped up 3 of the main prizes in different age categories. All of the participants received certificates. A full list of winners is as follows: Gents over 16 years - Alan Dick; Ladies over 16 years - Sharon Sutherland; Boys age 12 – 15 - Ciaran Gallagher; Girls age 12 – 15 - Eve Sutherland; Boys under 12 years - Owen Sutherland; Girls under 12 years - Nicole MacGilp. The winners were presented with their prizes at Bishopton Gala Day.

Lights, Camera, Action! #Ecoclips Competition Results
In Spring this year LEAP ran a short film clips competition for young people between the ages of 11 and 26. The initiative was put together in partnership with the Climate Challenge Fund, Young Scot and Active Renfrewshire. The competition generated discussions around ‘climate challenge’ - a subject area often weighed down with too much doom and gloom for many young people. Working to one of the suggested themes of, “Save The Planet”, “Save Energy” or “Meet the Climate Challenge”, entrants created simple, snappy short film clips between 6 and 60 seconds long using, a mobile, a flip cam or a video camera. 13 short clips were submitted involving the work of 22 young people whose creations were promoted though Youtube, and the LEAP and Young Scot Rewards websites. Selected via on-line votes the winning entry by Skye Cheshire bagged her the top prize of a beautiful Dawes bicycle. Local Prize winner Joseph Cameron, who as well as having a creative flair also has a keen interest in sciences was very pleased to receive a solar construction kit along with a wind up torch/radio as his prize. In the group category the winning team, the Magazine Group of Linwood Academy, will be taking part in a short course in animation production run by local filmmaker Kevin Cameron. Bishopton train station is to have a new ramp installed to enable wheelchair users better access to the station. Over half a million rail passenger journeys are made from the train station each year and this will increase as Dargavel grows. It is only right that public services are accessible to those who have limited mobility and I am very pleased that First Scotrail are making this investment. Renfrewshire and seven surrounding local authorities are to benefit from over £1billion of investment following the approval of the ‘City Deal’ from the UK Government. The funding will be used to deliver major infrastructure projects including a rail link to Glasgow Airport, a river crossing between Renfrew and Yoker and an opening-up of economic development locations around Glasgow Airport. As part of the deal there will also be funding to support projects to support people into work and career development and funding to tackle the scourge of youth unemployment. Across the region the funding will support 16,000 jobs during the construction phase and a further 28,000 permanent additional jobs. This is fantastic news and shows what can be done when local authorities work together and take a strategic approach to economic regeneration.
St Machar’s Bridge of Weir Ranfurly Church Senior Citizens’ Guild Association The Guild commences the new Session on Monday 6th October with a musical evening and harvest supper. We meet on the first and third Monday of each month and all are welcome. We have an interesting syllabus so come along and join us for an evening of friendship and fellowship.
Our session commences on Wednesday 24th September in the Cargill Gall, Bridge of Weir at 7.15pm with entertainment. Our meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month and a warm welcome is extended to anyone who is over 55.
It was a delight to see the Queens Baton Relay visit Bridge of Weir, Langbank and Bishopton. In all three villages residents turned out in force and gave the baton carriers a warm welcome, clapping and cheering the relay runners as the baton visited every part of Renfrewshire. The baton carriers – volunteers nominated by the local community – did their areas proud with many stopping to have pictures taken and allowing children to touch the baton. Space doesn’t allow them to be mentioned by name (there were 21 in Ward 10 alone) – but they all played a very important part in making the event memorable for everyone involved. TARA Report The latest meeting of Bridge of Weir Tenants and Residents Association was held on Tuesday 15th July. The police report for the past month showed that there were twelve crimes committed over the period, eight of which were detected. Two of those undetected concerned an incident under the Dangerous Dog Act where a child was bitten in Houston Road park and a break in at The Kiosk shop in Houston Road. Renfrewshire Council are continuing their policy of releasing Greenbelt land for private housing throughout the county, with the latest local housing plan making provision for forty houses at Shillingworth and a further application is expected for nine houses to be built in Lawmarnock Road. The impact these and any future developments will have on local services such as doctors, schools, transport, etc., will be closely monitored by local councillors and this association. Restoration of the village’s war memorial is almost complete, and after a few minor hitches it is expected the work will be completed within the next couple of weeks.

Work will start on new traffic calming measures on Kilmacolm Road within the next eight weeks in the hope of reducing the speed of traffic entering and exiting the village. The next TARA meeting will be held in the Pirie Centre at Freeland Church on Tuesday 19th August at 7.30pm.
Sam, who received the Baton from Susan Fleming high fived Andrew Girvan as she sent him on his way on the next leg. Andrew was nominated by customers on his retirement after 31 years as the local postie. Andrew then sent Toni Napolitanio on her way Toni was filmed on the BBC website coverage. Teacher Tim Burges covered the final leg before the Baton was sent on its way to Houston. The Community Council is currently on summer recess however this does not stop us taking on matters of concern to the Village. Readers may recall back in February a local resident presented a petition supported by the Community Council to The Audit Scrutiny and Petitions Board for further traffic calming measures on the Kilmacolm Road. This was passed to the Director of Community Resources for her consideration. It has again been brought to the attention of the Community Council that the existing measures are non-functional due to broken bollards and lack of any proper traffic control at the location. We have asked the Council if they have any new proposals for this area and that the current measures be reinstated or upgraded. A resident approached the Chairman of the Community Council with a positive suggestion to have the obsolete bus shelter on Main Street at the Prieston Road junction be relocated to the bus stop at Bulls Garage on the route to Kilmacolm. The Community Council will raise this matter with Adshiel the suppliers. We have written to Renfrewshire Council to have the Prieston Road to Bonar Crescent steps maintained. On the buses: summer offers on McGill’s buses miss out Bridge of Weir Go Zone 4 users on the X7. On other Zones children travel for £1. To visit the ON-X in Linwood children from Bridge of Weir pay double, another offer outwith the village, Inverclyde to Glasgow from £5 return Bridge of Weir to Glasgow £6:90. WWW.ADVERTIZER.CO.UK Some of our readers may have noticed Brighter Bridge of Weir volunteers out and about recently, watering the planters in the rain. You’ d be forgiven for thinking “?!” But they have an answer, as a member of the group explains: “As the flowers and shrubs develop, the planters’ surfaces become sheltered by the growth above them, and rain doesn’t penetrate sufficiently to keep them healthy.” Most of the planters have built-in reservoirs, containing from about 9 litres (2 gallons) to over 200 litres (45 gallons). In warm weather, the water is quickly taken up by the plants and some is lost by evaporation, too. It isn’t possible to channel the rainwater into them, so the planters require to be topped up regularly as often as two or three times a week in spring and summer even if it’s been raining. “Plants take up water through their roots,” our source points out, “so
howwood & elderslie Congratulations MBE for Mrs Nan Robertson On the Tuesday 1st July 2014 at Hollyrood Palace Edinburgh, Mrs Nan Robertson was presented with an MBE for services to the children’s panel. Nan was a member of the Children’s Hearing system since its inception in 1971 till she retired from it in 2013. The Children’s hearing system is unique to Scotland and mainly took over the role of the juvenile court helping children from birth till 16 years, and 18 years in some cases. The Hearings consisted of three Panel Members (Mixed either two men and one woman or two women and one man) dealing with children who have offended or have been offended against. The panel listened to the grounds of referral (the reason why they were there) and discussed in full together with the child and parents a possible solution to the problems etc. The idea was to be curative rather than punitive. Many children have benefitted from the Children’s Hearing system over the years and in fact as adults some have applied to be panel members and after training have proved to be excellent members using their life experiences and skills to help others.

But in the case of Brighter Bridge of Weir’s planters - and tubs in peoples’ gardens or patios and driveways - the plants are in confined spaces with a very limited catchment and whatever rain falls simply wets the leaves and flowers. It isn’t enough to sustain them, you have to water the soil.” So now you know. Brighter Bridge of Weir were represented when the Commonwealth Games Baton was carried through the village on Thursday 17th July. The TattieBogle family: Tam, Bessie and wee Gryffe, last seen on Gala Day, were there to help the Community Council distribute snacks and soft drinks to the children who were out to watch the historic event. I attended the Howwood Primary Schools Commonwealth Games Baton Relay. The weather was glorious and the kids seemed to really enjoy it. A lot of work went into this event so well done to the teachers and parents who were involved in organising the day. Members of the Community Council contacted me concerning the height of the fence that is beside the road that goes over the A737 near the railway station. I have been told by the authorities that the height is acceptable and that it meets minimum standards. Let me know what you think? I managed to pop into the consultation exercise being run by the Forestry Commission concerning some work to be done near and around the old Carsewood House site. I think this area is a terrific asset, not only for the village, but for the whole of Renfrewshire. Any enhancement to this area is to be welcomed. I have spoken to the police recently about speeding drivers. Do you think this is a problem for Howwood? If so, please let me know. The local development plan was passed recently by Renfrewshire Council and the field between Kilknowe Cottages and the Beith Road has been identified as a possible sight for new housing. I will keep you up to date with any developments. Finally some good news for the area with the announcement of a one billion pound investment in the Greater Glasgow area. This will help create thousands of jobs for people and I am pleased that our council was heavily involved in achieving this funding. After 25 years of panel membership she went on to be a member and latterly chair of the Renfrewshire Children’s Panel Advisory committee and among the many duties there took part in annual recruitment campaigns to encourage other members of the public to give some of their time to becoming a panel member. This work was totally voluntary but interestingly very satisfying and all while working full time.

Agreement kilmacolm & Twinning signed in Mérignies quarriers
For many months, the Kilmacolm & Mérignies Twinning Society has been working hard to ensure that the formal twinning agreement with Mérignies in north eastern France could become a reality.
I attended St Columba’s Church 3 days in a row at end of term School occasions. Kilmacolm Primary held its annual P7 leavers service, conducted by the youngsters most impressively. Good to see Mrs Jones in attendance and it is fortunate that there is an able deputy in Mrs Reid. St Columba’s Junior School held their prize giving where the guest of honour was Mr Sam Wilding the well known author of children’s books. He certainly knew how to engage with his audience. The Senior School prize giving is one of the highlights of my educational year and this was no exception. The main speaker Jamie Andrew OBE was quite inspirational. He told the story of how he lost his best friend and both hands and feet in a climbing accident and how he adapted to normal life. He did spare us the intricacies of changing a nappy with his teeth! The vast majority of leavers from KPS are moving on to Port Glasgow High School whose presentation of the Broadway Musical Hairspray was befitting of an educational establishment with an exceptional musical reputation. I recognised many FPs of KPS in the cast. The signing agreement of the twinning of Kilmacolm with Merignies was conducted on behalf of the village by Fiona Scott on Bastille Day in Northern France. Momentoes were presented on behalf of the Provost to the Mayor of Merignies . Road signs for outside the village are currently being drawn up to match those now outside our French counterpart. I received the Queen’s Commonwealth Baton in the village, where there was an excellent turnout in spite of the rain. I am not sure if photos of me hugging the Games Mascot Clyde have done much good for my street cred. The Union Flag flew over the village for this occasion and recently for Armed Forces Week.
As many will know, the agreement was to be signed in both villages, with the first signing taking place at the Kilmacolm & Port Glasgow Agricultural Show in May and attended by a number of Councillors from Mérignies. In early July, a delegation from our Twinning S o c i e t y travelled to Mérignies to sign the agreement on French soil. They were g r e e t e d with the same hospitality, warmth, enthusiasm and genuine friendship shown on previous occasions. These were just some of the reasons the Twinning Society believe Mérignies to be a suitable village to twin with. Others are, of course, the many similarities between the two villages such as schools, societies, clubs, sporting groups of all types and cultural activities.
The smell that emanates from human sewage is different from the earthy aroma of slurry and can be overpowering. Those who live in a country village accept slurry smell as part and parcel of a rural way of life. I am quite sure the problem currently associated with the spreading of the former near Kilmacolm and Bishopton will soon waft away.
The flags of both countries were flying at the main church, at the town hall and other important buildings to welcome the Kilmacolm delegation and a reception was held by Mayor Francis Mélon and his Councillors.
The adoption of the concrete planters at Birkmyre Park by Colourful Kilmacolm has been a resounding success and I also feel there has been a significant improvement in the appearance of the new ones in the Piazza though there are those that think that the planters themselves are just a wee bit too large.
Mayor Mélon is an exceptional man. He has been a very popular Mayor of Mérignies for many years and was recently re-elected for a further term. He is passionate about Kilmacolm and forging close links between the villages on a cultural, educational and sporting level and he and his Councillors have never faltered in their desire to formalise the agreement.

All residents of Mérignies were invited to attend the signing. The local brass band and choir played traditional French music, and surprised the Kilmacolm visitors with renditions of Highland Cathedral and Flower of Scotland. The choir, who had learned the words phonetically, produced a truly memorable and moving performance.

Although a constituted group, the Twinning Society is not an elected body and therefore the Agreement was duly signed by Mayor Mélon, and by Helen Cook who signed in her capacity as Deputy Chair of Kilmacolm Community Council. Helen and members of the Twinning Society, David Bowman and Chair, Fiona Scott, gave speeches to the assembled community, variously explaining more about Kilmacolm and Scotland in general. David gave a lighthearted presentation in French which helped the formalities run smoothly, raising laughter in the process and improvising as required. The speeches were well received and the interest in visiting Kilmacolm or welcoming visitors to Mérignies, was significant. Fiona was presented with the ‘key’ to Mérignies and was then asked to unveil, with Mayor Mélon, the new road signs that will be positioned at the main entry roads to Mérignies. The visit served to further strengthen the links between the two villages, as well as allow the formalities to be concluded. The Twinning Society has already begun to work on a sustainable plan for the future that will allow schools, groups, clubs and the wider Kilmacolm community to benefit from the opportunities that the twinning can offer. A similar scenario is taking place in Mérignies. More information will continue to be made available in future editions of the Gryffe Advertizer. St Fillan’s and Others Three local Scottish Episcopal churches have joined together under a new Rector, the Revd David Gifford. The new minister will lead a Ministry Team to serve St Mary the Virgin, Port Glasgow, St Mary the Virgin, Bridge of Weir and St Fillan’s, Kilmacolm. David and his wife, Francine came from the Diocese of Oxford in which David served as a Curate. They will take up residency at the Rectory which is attached to St Mary’s Church in Port Glasgow. The Rector will be leading the Ministry Team which will include the Rev Robert Chambers, Gerard McKeown (Reader) and Maureen Russell (Pastoral Assistant).

The Angel Voices The Angel Voices Community Children’s Choir had a celebration with songs and music to celebrate their first year. Mr. Tom Walton who is former Head of Music at St. Columba’s School presented members of the choir with their awards for the Royal School of Church Music Voices for Life course and a Certificate of Merit in recognition to all the individual children for their wonderful contribution.

AMG T’ai Chi and Chi Kung On Friday 15th August at 10.15am, a new six week block of 18 Movement (T’ai Chi) Chi Kung will start in St Fillan’s Episcopal Church Hall , Kilmacolm. This is a series of gentle, relaxing exercises based on the movements of T’ai Chi, but much simpler to learn. The exercises are designed to improve the general health and wellbeing of the practitioner and the overall aim of the exercise is to reduce mental stress and physical tension carried in the muscles of the body. The Cross Café celebrates its 90th Birthday on Saturday 13th September 2014. We are holding a day of celebrations and hope you will all come along and join us at some point during the day. We have lots planned including a treasure hunt for children, a raffle & music just to name a few events on the day, more details to follow in the September issue of the Advertizer. We also have a Facebook page for you to keep up with our plans and goings on. Please like us! Did you know……… Bernedetto Pignatelli came to Scotland as a boy in 1902. Later he met Carmela Rossi in Glasgow whom he married. When their family, came along they decided they wanted the children to be brought up in the country. The family came to Kilmacolm in 1924, took over an empty shop which had been a fruit shop and confectioners, which became the Cross Cafe. Bernedetto and Camela had 2 boys & 3 girls, one of the girls being Mafalda known as Mabel, (Alda & Johnanna’s mother). In 1948 Mabel met Giovanni Jannetta, known as Johnny, they married in 1950 and took over the Cross Café from Mabel’s parents Bernedetto & Carmela as they wanted to go back home to Casino in Italy to retire. Mabel and Johnny went on to have 2 daughters, Alda & Johanna. Both Johnny and Mabel have now sadly passed away. Alda & Johanna have carried on running the family business and the rest as they say is history!
Colourful Kilmacolm Isn’t this a pleasant way to spend a warm, sunny summer’s morning? Our teams of volunteers have been kept busy at the Piazza and at Birkmyre Park, for good weather means we have to do lots of watering and dead-heading. Of course it also means that the displays look their best and from the comments we have been receiving locally it appears that our efforts are appreciated. At the start of our project we registered with ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’, a scheme run in conjunction with Keep Scotland Beautiful and The Royal Horticultural Society and in June we had a visit from an assessor. In his report he complimented Colourful Kilmacolm on our first year’s achievements: ‘off to a flying start’, ‘impressive array of colours’, ‘stunning planters’, are among his phrases. He also praised the involvement of volunteers, good partnership with the local authority, links with schools and our ‘informative website’. Are we pleased? Of course we are, especially when such positive comments come from an organisation which is regularly assessing schemes throughout Scotland. Kilmacolm Bridge Club The Kilmacolm Bridge Club resumes play on Monday 1st September. We meet in the New Community Centre and play commences at 7.15pm. The Club is a member of the Scottish Bridge Union with 2 teams playing in the Renfrewshire Bridge League. There is a proposal by the Post Office to move the Lochwinnoch Post Office service into the Spar Store at the Cross. If this happens, the opening hours of the new Lochwinnoch Post Office will radically increase, so that it will open Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 10pm, and have Sunday opening from 8am to 10pm. There will be however some services which will no longer be available locally, and villagers would have to go to Johnstone or Kilbirnie for international parcels and travel insurance.

I am delighted to be able to inform all Habbies that following a long running campaign by myself, with determined input from Shuttle Street residents, I have persuaded Renfrewshire Council to install Driver Feedback Signs in Shuttle Street on a permanent basis, to reduce speeding down through Kilbarchan. This is a step forward, I feel, for road safety in the village as this is a hot spot for speeding.

The girls and helpers from The Sunday S c h o o l kept all the children who attended, w e l l entertained, and the Tea Room helpers w e r e certainly kept going. The burgers were all used up, the tombola ran out of prizes, and the baking disappeared like ‘hotcakes’!! (Sorry). It has been noted that we will need to have more stalls in future, and that matter will be addressed.
We are a friendly knitting group, meeting every Monday at The Three Churches, Church Street, Lochwinnoch, from 10am until lunchtime (and beyond). The weather stayed fair, and we royally entertained by The Riverside Youth Band, The 2nd Port Glasgow BB Marching Band, and representatives from St Columba School Pipe Band. We got in before Glastonbury, and T in The Park, and though we didn’t have the numbers attending that those events had, we still heard great music.

As I write my article for the August edition of the Advertizer we are only a few days away from the start of the Commonwealth Games and excitement is building as we await athletes from around the globe. Here is to an excellent Games and all the activities and programmes going on around them. We must also hope for great weather and of course that our Scottish athletes perform well and win many medals.

Last month the Commonwealth Baton Relay came to Inverclyde and was warmly embraced across all our communities. The last leg of the baton relay finishing that night at the Battery Park where well known weight lifter George Byng ran into the park to be met by many of the Inverclyde baton bearers, who had run stages throughout the day, as well as several hundred members of the public. At the park we were well entertained by children from schools around the distinct along with some adults who sang “Let the Games Begin”, the WOOPI pipes and drums and by the young entertainer from the X-Factor Nicholas McDonald. It was a great day and night for Inverclyde. The baton bearers must have felt very proud to play their part in the Games.

Lochwinnoch Arts Festival There was a very successful Arts Festival outreach event on Saturday 12th July, a free “come and try” session for absolute beginners on playing the Ukelele followed by a varied fun evening in The Three Churches Inn with ‘Trampas’, ‘Witches Brew ‘and the ‘Small Fezzes’. The SNP’s Councillor for Johnstone North, Kilbarchan, and Lochwinnoch, Andy Doig, has advised his Lochwinnoch constituents to make sure they have their say over new plans by the Post Office nationally to re-shape the provision of services at the Lochwinnoch Post Office in the village’s Main Street, and move it into the Spar Store at Lochwinnoch Cross. The consultation started on 3rd July and ends on the 21st August 2014. Cllr Doig said “I received a letter from the Post Office nationally about the fact they are launching a consultation for the residents of Lochwinnoch on how they want the service at Main Street to develop. Immediately I contacted the Sub Postmaster and his staff to get more information and the fundamental change is to move the Post Office service into the Spar Store at Lochwinnoch Cross. Another main change which they are proposing is that once they move into the main store the opening hours of the new Lochwinnoch Post Office will radically increase so that it will be open Monday to Saturday, from 7am to 10pm, and have Sunday opening. There will be however some services which will no longer be available locally and villagers would have to go to Johnstone or Kilbirnie for international parcels and travel insurance. Recognising Mary Barbour Local Kilbarchan Councillor Derek Bibby is leading a campaign to recognise the achievements of one of Renfrewshire’s legendary figures of the early 20th century, in Kilbarchan where she was born and spent her childhood. Mary Barbour was born on the 22nd February in 1875 at 37 New Street - sadly now demolished. She was the third of seven children born to carpet weaver James Rough and Jane Gavin. Mary spent the first formative years of her life in Kilbarchan before the family moved to Elderslie following which Mary moved to Govan where she spent her adult life. Next year will see the centenary of the Glasgow Rent Strike which she led and which was featured in the history of the Great War presented by Jeremy Paxman on BBC television earlier this year. Mary Barbour and her supporters led opposition to the rent increases and fought evictions imposed by unscrupulous land lords which affected families of soldiers away fighting on the battlefields of the First World War. The actions of Mrs Barbour’s army as they became known resulted in the Rent Restrictions Act that marked a turning point in Scotland’s housing history this was far from Mary Barbour’s only achievement. In 1920 she became Glasgow’s first female councillor, one of the first female magistrates, was instrumental in the provision of child welfare centres, free oranges juice, laundries, wash houses, help and benefits for mothers and the setting up of Glasgow’s first family planning clinic. Now Councillor Bibby has secured agreement from Renfrewshire Council that Mary Barbour’s legacy and achievements be recognised in Kilbarchan He told us; “Plans to commemorate Mary Barbour’s life are up and running in Glasgow. Mary came from a weaving family in Kilbarchan an industry which had a strong sense of social justice. Mary’s vision and achievements which pre dated the welfare state were forged through that vision. Although less welcome than other influential figures in Renfrewshire’s political history such as Willie Gallacher and Jimmy Maxton, few are more venerated in the annals of the working class movement. Mary Barbour has featured in the media in recent times through a Channel Four documentary the BBC series The Great War and on Woman’s Hour. She is also part of Scotland’s Tapestry exhibition which recently visited Renfrewshire. I am delighted therefore to have had discussions with both Kilbarchan community council and Renfrewshire council to look at ways in which the village can mark the achievements of this legendary woman. Among the suggestions were a commemorative blue plaque, bench, cultural exhibition of her work, and a annual award for the Young Woman Achiever of the Year. Further discussions will take place on these proposals, however I would welcome suggestions from Advertizer readers. Weaver’s Cottage
I am pleased to report work is continuing on improving the roads and footpaths within Kilbarchan and particularly away from the main routes. The potholes in Forehouse Road, and the pavement in Milliken Drive have recently seen improvements. I recently attended a meeting with members of Kilbarchan Community Council, representatives the Cemex company, and a senior planning officer from Renfrewshire Council which looked at concerns of villagers regarding activities at Kilbarchan quarry. Renfrewshire Council’s planning board turned down the original application for a time extension until 2030 on activities at the quarry, but it was granted on appeal by the Scottish Government. Some of the main areas of concern discussed at the meeting were traffic movement early morning and weekends, noise levels, and safety issues on the Branscroft. It is fair to say, that limited reassurances were received, however there is some hope for more consideration to be given to local residents affected by activities at the quarry. There remains however a continuing need for vigilance in ensuring that the conditions associated with the planning approval are strictly adhered to, and I will continue to work with the community and Renfrewshire Council to ensure this is the case. In Lochwinnoch, among the local organisations awarded grants at the most recent local area committee meeting were Lochwinnoch Arts Festival and the village Scottish Country Dance group. Congratulations to Liz Somerville Head Teacher and her staff at Kilbarchan primary school, for an excellent report following the schools most recent inspection. This is testimony to the hard work and commitment of all in striving to provide the best possible education for all our children. As everyone will know the Queens baton passed through Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch on the 17th July, on its way to the Commonwealth Games. I was pleased to help secure funding for flags and bunting for the event.
The summer brings people from all over the world to KIlbarchan. The village is an ideal venue for visiting Commonwealth Games supporters, if you are hosting them. Last month a group of Americans on a tour of National Trust for Scotland properties in the West of Scotland dropped in at the Weaver’s Cottage to see spinning and weaving in progress. They were pleased to see the prototype Bannockburn commemorative tartan and were happy to buy Johnson’s of Elgin Bannockburn ties and scarves in the cottage’s souvenir and craft shop. Queen’s Baton Relay
It was great to see Renfrewshire rising to the occasion when welcoming the Queen’s baton to the county. There was a real buzz at a number of the locations where the baton was carried and at the On-X in Linwood it was a real fun family event throughout the day. Special thanks are owed to all those who carried the baton throughout Renfrewshire.

Community Councils can make a real difference to the local area and when people work together it has a real impact on community spirit. Houston Community Council are currently looking for new members and the council meets on the 3rd Wednesday of the month (except July and August) at 7.30pm in the Carrick Centre. Having raised concerns regarding the maintenance of the main roundabout on Houston Road I am pleased to notice an improvement in this area. The regular fly-posting and irresponsible discarding of signs at the roundabout continues to make this busy junction in the village appear untidy and I share the concern of residents who feel this needs to improve. Baton Relay comes to Brookfield
The Commonwealth Baton Relay came to Brookfield on Thursday 17th. July. The baton was carried down Victoria Road, along Woodside Road and up Albert Road. Residents had put up bunting, flags and balloons to decorate the route and some of the children of the Village greeted the arrival of the baton at the top of Victoria Road. The route was lined with residents and friends who either waved flags, cheered or ran with the baton. After the baton left the Village, residents and children enjoyed picnics in the Field and took part in races and other activities. Kate Gordon, the Village poet composed a special poem entitled “Brookfield’s Baton to mark the day and read it in the Field before the activities started. Sandy, Kate’s husband had represented Scotland at two previous Commonwealth Games and he brought along some memorabilia for everyone to see. It was also Sandy’s Birthday and Louise Barker, the Village Chair person had made a birthday cake which everyone enjoyed. The sun shone and it was a wonderful and memorable day for the Village of Brookfield and its residents. Kirk Extension Begins The long anticipated work on the Kirk Extension has commenced! Fleming and Company, builders with experience of completing similar projects, have been taking advantage of the fine summer weather to make an impressive start to building work. It is hoped to complete the job in the spring of next year.

Village development ‘reckless’ blasts Councillor
An application for housing development which would see greenbelt lost in the Renfrewshire village of Houston has been attacked as ‘reckless’ by one of the Local Councillors representing the area. Labour Councillor Stuart Clark has lodged a formal objection to the application which proposes twenty detached houses would be built on greenbelt land at the site between Lonend Cottage and Woodend Lodge at Houston Road in the village. The proposal, by housing developer Cala, comes after the land was approved by the Scottish Government to be zoned for housing, following their acceptance of Renfrewshire Council’s Local Development Plan. However many local residents are fearful of the potential for increased flooding in the village, which has been an on-going concern for years. Scottish Water recent revealed to the Community Council that the area needs an upgrade to the water network of over £1million to prevent the flooding which has been a concern at hot-spots in the village network. Councillor for Houston, Crosslee and Linwood, Stuart Clark, blasted the proposal: “We have two other housing applications in within the village, on brownfield sites at the former Urquhart and Killallan Houses, with this application too we will be talking about an extra 50 houses being built in Houston. I am not against development in principle, but it needs to be measured and sensible. Building on green-belt land whilst there are still infra-structure concerns is not sensible and I believe it should be opposed.” Local residents expressed concern to the Scottish Government during its consideration of the Local Development Plan with hundreds of residents from Houston filing objections. Two greenbelt sites have been approved for development, including land at the East of Fleming Road. Local resident Stephen Wright expressed concerns about the green-belt application, saying: “When there are brown-field sites up for development and other sites such as the large brown-field Merchiston site just up the road I do not think it should be deemed necessary to lose greenbelt to the village forever.” The deadline for objections to the application has now past, but it is expected that the proposal will be discussed and decided upon by members of the Planning Board in the autumn.

David Hayman brings his new show to Houston One of Scotland’s finest actors and directors David Hayman is bringing his new play to Houston. After a full run at the Assembly Rooms at the Edinburgh Fringe, The Pitiless Storm tours Scotland throughout August and September, including the Carrick Centre in Houston.
The one-man show, written by Chris Dolan, takes place on the eve of the Scottish referendum. On the most important night of his life a left wing trade unionist goes through a crisis of conscience as he is forced to question his political and moral beliefs in the face of a seachange in his country’s political life. Loved and respected Bob Cunningham (David Hayman) has devoted his life to the party he loves and believes in but in his mid-fifties he is forced by the voices of his past and his conscience to re-evaluate everything he has held dear. A widower with a dicky ticker and an estranged son is either about to accept an OBE or make a decision that will not only change his life but may also affect the future course of his country. David Hayman said: “I’m delighted to be performing in Houston. The play deals with a very real dilemma faced by many Scots as September approaches. Do we stick with the ideals we have grown up with, or face the reality of the issues facing Scotland today?” The performance is followed by a Q&A session with David Hayman. OUTDOORS news The Garden in August Container-grown roses can be planted at any time of year. Choose a spot where they’ll enjoy at least a few hours of sun each day. Shrub roses and easy-care varieties will grow happily among other flowers in the border. Enrich the soil with compost and a handful of general fertiliser, water generously, and mulch. Keep watering throughout the first season.
These gardens can be large single areas or a collection of smaller, town or village gardens. All we ask is that there is collective interest for about 45 minutes. The openings are great fun and money is raised for good causes.

The flowers are a particularly warm shade of deep yellow and have a wonderful scent. Plant in fertile, well-manured soil in full sun. Deadhead regularly to encourage repeat flowering.

The Highs coming in from the south are meeting damper conditions in the north thus providing ideal growing conditions for hedging. Now is a good time to give hedges a prune - unless you have birds nesting. If so, wait till the young have fledged before trimming back new growth. A members-only visit to a local garden took place in June. This walled garden is well-known for managing Bridge of Weir’s mixed soil conditions and damp or rocky areas. These private outings are much enjoyed by everyone and inspire members who leave with ideas for their own gardens. Sadly, the Society said farewell to its President, Willie Scott. For many years Willie acted as Treasurer and - along with sister, Betty, remembered in a recent article - was a great supporter of all the Society’s events. His knowledge and contribution will be much missed.

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society’s annual Flower Show will be held in the New Community Centre, Kilmacolm on Saturday 6th September. Admission is free to members, and £1 for non-members. Doors open to the show from 11am onwards, with the prizegiving at 3.30pm and auction of flowers and vegetables at 4pm. Entries need to be brought to the Hall on Friday evening prior to the show. Lochwinnoch’s Gala Day Dog Show On behalf of the organisers of Lochwinnoch’s gala day dog show, I would like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who supported us on the day. The classes were a great success, some full of entries, lovely to see so many breeds, and ages of dogs, and a great mix of owners. Kilbarchan Beekeepers Association General Beekeeping
During July and August the main nectar flow of the summer starts. Brambles, Blackberries, Lime Trees, Clover (white), Rosebay Willowherb, and later on Himalayan Balsam are a major source of nectar for our local honeybee colonies. Some of the garden plants flowering over these months beneficial to bees are Borage, Buddleia, Campanula, Cerinthe (Honeywort), Cosmos, Dahlia’s (single open flower varieties), Hydrangea, Jasmin, Lavender, Lavaterea, Salvia and many more.
Royal Highland Show
The Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh was on between June 19th – 22nd. The Scottish Beekeeping Association were present in their large tent at the West Gate. The SBA have been regulars at the show for many years, and their exhibit provides invaluable information about Honey Bees and other pollinators for the general public. This includes educational talks for schools and even the opportunity for children to make their own rolled wax candles. Kilbarchan Beekeepers support the SBA by providing volunteers to help set up the exhibits, and provide general stewarding during the 4 days the show is open to the public. In addition, all members are encouraged to submit entries into the judging of all the categories, focusing on Honey and Honey Products, Wax and related products, Baking using honey as a key ingredient and general displays from Local Associations around Scotland. This year KBA’s Ian Craig not only won 1st in Class for his 6 Jars of Honey, but also won the overall Best Exhibit across all the Honey Classes due to the quality and taste of his entry – Well Done Ian!
RSPB Lochwinnoch
Autumn is a great time to visit RSPB Lochwinnoch Nature Reserve. As well as the wonderful birdlife, it is the perfect time to see bats because the evenings are getting darker and the bats are not hibernating yet. Dinner for a bat would be some yummy moths and we have been getting some lovely ones here at the reserve. A couple of favourites are the elephant and poplar hawkmoths! Unmistakable because they’re so much larger than the rest! If you would like to explore the reserve out of hours and learn more about the bats and moths that are found here then come along on Friday 29th August 8pm til late. There will be a presentation and then a walk out on the reserve with bat detectors, led by experts. The following morning 10am12pm we’ll check the moth trap and see what yummy moth snacks are around for the bats to eat. Pedal for Scotland and raise money for the SSPCA We’re looking for enthusiastic cyclists who want to raise vital funds for Scotland’s animals!
Beware of Ticks
Fresh n Lo Pedal for Scotland is an event for cyclists with three fantastic options to choose from.
Ticks lie in wait in areas of vegetation and attach to passing animals, including cats and dogs (and people!). Once attached a tick will feed for a period of hours to days.
The Challenge Ride is the classic 51 mile cycle from Glasgow to Edinburgh.
Ticks are a serious health concern. Severe infestations of ticks can cause anaemia due to blood loss, especially in young animals. They can cause local reactions at the site of attachment and more importantly can act as vectors of disease, meaning they can transmit diseases to the host animal. Clinical signs of tick borne disease can vary and may develop within days or may take months to become apparent. The most common clinical signs of a tick borne disease are fever and lethargy. Other signs may include weakness, lameness, joint swelling and anaemia. In order to reduce the risk of disease transmission it is important that ticks are removed as soon as possible. This can be done using a specially designed tick hook or with a pair of fine tipped tweezers. The tick should be rotated clockwise while pulling gently to remove. It is important not to jerk the tick as stressing the tick increases the risk of transmitting disease due to regurgitation of the ticks’ stomach contents into the hosts’ blood stream. If you are not sure about removing a tick yourself your vet will be happy to help. There are several preventative treatments on the market designed to repel ticks and reduce the chance of one attaching, and to kill ticks rapidly if they do attach and feed. It is a good idea to use one of these products on your pet especially if you walk regularly in rural areas. Your vet will be able to advise on the best option for prevention for your pet. Underheugh Ark Founded and managed by animal lover Stefanie Gallagher, the Underheugh Ark is a self funding, non profit organisation and charity which rescues and rehomes animals that have suffered cruelty or neglect. Situated near Gourock at Lunderston Bay, the rescue centre currently has chickens, cockerels, geese, rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, gerbils, dogs and cats all in search for new, attentive owners and homes. The animals are all checked and any potential homes reviewed prior to rehoming. The Ark are very keen to hear from anyone who would be willing to give any of these wee souls a forever home. Another aspect for helping is to offer a foster home until a forever home can be found as space is a priority for these poor wee animals. Summer Fun At Midgavin Nursery Summer is here and the children have enjoyed many sunny days out in the Nursery garden area attending to fruit, vegetable and herbs and feeding our chickens. Also during June staff and children invited Dads to come into the Nursery for a morning or afternoon to participate in a fun activity with their child. Some of children and dads enjoyed filling out a fun questionnaire all about them and their dad and drawing pictures of each other and other outside activities in the garden showing them our new well, garden patch and chickens. At the end of June mums, dads and grandparents attended our Graduation Concert where the children enjoyed performing their French, dancing, singing and their little drama, “The Litter Muncher”. Our Pre 5 children were delighted when one of their favourite characters “Peppa Pig” arrived unexpectedly to deliver their Graduation Certificates to them and all the staff expressed their best wishes to the children for their future. Linda from Oral Health recently visited with Charlie, the crocodile, and Sally, the snake, to talk to the children about how to brush their teeth properly. The children had the opportunity to brush Charlie and Sally’s teeth and to check them with a small mirror. They also discussed about visiting the dentist and healthy and unhealthy foods. When out in the sunny weather the children have been digging up our home grown carrots, potatoes and onions from our raised beds and in the polytunnel and look forward to harvesting the rest of the assorted vegetables throughout the next few months. The children then gave the vegetables to our Cook who cooked them for lunch and snacks. Throughout the nursery the children have been going on nature walks discovering the changes in nature during the summer months. We are having an open week between 4th August and 8th August 2014 in the hours between 9am – 11am & 2pm – 4pm. Please come along and see the work that we do. Houston Primary Houston Primary School pupils and staff enjoyed a fantastic leavers’ ceilidh in school, following a pre dance party at the River Inn. It was also the final ceilidh for Mrs Myra Hamilton who has been Head Teacher, for the past 20 years.
Mrs Hamilton said, “I have had the most amazing years as Head Teacher of this wonderful school and nursery, working alongside so many skilled members of the management team, talented teachers, nursery officers and support staff who, along with our parents and volunteers have given the children the very best education possible. I shall miss the pupils, staff, parents and the Houston community very much and will take a wealth of special memories with me into my retirement. I would like to thank Houston Primary/Nursery staff, parents, pupils, school volunteers, the School Council, Mr Johnson and Gryffe High School, The Reverend Donald Campbell and Houston and Killellan Kirk, former parents and pupils, colleagues, Bridge of Weir Primary, St Fillan’s Primary, Woodlands Nursery, Strawberryfield Nursery and Abbey Nursery for their friendship, gifts, cards and good wishes. I have been truly overwhelmed by everyone’s generosity. I shall never forget the wonderful send off I was given by staff and pupils in true Houston style which included a special garden party in school grounds on the sunniest day of the year. I was given the honour of being Queen for the day. The Nursery children and pupils in every stage of the school performed specially written songs which I and invited guests enjoyed. The day ended with the whole school singing the school song. It was a perfect day which I shall never forget. I leave behind a strong team who will lead the school and nursery onwards and upwards, always striving for excellence. I wish Jennifer Murray, Acting Head Teacher and staff every success as the new session begins on 12th August.”

Kilbarchan Primary Helping Mary’s Meals
Jessica Newnes (P7) started a Nail Bar in Kilbarchan Primary in 2011 to raise money for Mary’s Meals. She decided to start the Nail Bar “Polish it up” because she thought it would be a fun thing to do while raising money for a worthy charity. Recently she was presented with a Renfrewshire Council’s Young Achiever’s Award for her efforts.
She has raised £48.20 since August 2013, but has raised hundreds of pounds since it started. She did the Nail Bar on the first Friday of every month. Without the help of the pupils and teachers and especially Mrs Sommerville (the Headteacher) the Nail Bar wouldn’t have been as successful as it was.
Why don’t you come along and have some fun and make new friends? Mummies, Daddies, Carers, Grannies, Grandpas are welcome to come along too.

St Columba Church Hammering Home to Playgroup & Toddler Group Victory Gifted St Benedict’s pupil Mia Shepherd is a growing talent in the world of sport. Mia, an S5 pupil, recently achieved much success through her participation in a Scottish Schools’ Athletic Association event, at Hampden. Towards the end of June, Mia, along with young budding athletes, including her school colleague, Megan Leighton, who narrowly missed qualifying for the final stages of the 400m, competed against pupils from schools across Scotland. Mia surpassed expectations, by achieving a fabulous personal best of 17.75 seconds for her performance in the hurdles. She also performed extremely well in the Hammer Throw, and she won the silver medal. Mia, who has competed most years in the event said “I was delighted and surprised with the hurdle event, as I achieved a personal best. The most exciting thing was when I made second place in the Hammer Throw. This was obviously an amazing experience especially in this inspiring setting.”
Playgroup is on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings in the St Columba Church in Kilmacolm using a cosy hall for the Playroom. You can attend one, two or three days – whatever suits. Mondays from 9.30, Tues & Thursdays from 9.15am until 11.40am. Fees are currently £7 per session which is great value for over 2 hours care.
Children are welcome from 2yrs 4mths but get your name on the waiting list quickly as under Care Inspectorate rules, we can only take ten 2yrs olds on any one day. Children don’t need to be toilet trained. Most children move on to nursery after their third birthday so Playgroup is a great stepping stone from Toddlers and creates independence.
Gryffe High School Careers Fair/ Employability/ Heart Start Event Friday 13th June was a very busy but productive day for EVERY single Gryffe High pupil including the P7 pupils who were finishing their week long induction. P7 and S2 pupils followed an intense programme which provided the opportunity for them to see at least 6 different careers. They chose 4 workshops and then had 2 extra workshops included. More than fifty people gave up their time to help with the day and share their expertise with
We have a huge variety of resources and equipment from the climbing frame, to cars, trains, dolls, jigsaws, dressing-up, sand and water play – including lots of things you might not let them do in the house! The session is mostly free play but with some adult-led craft and physical games. There are lots of chances to play and explore plus make friends for nursery. It’s a busy morning and your child will go home happy, tired and fulfilled. Parents or carers are given a slot on the duty rota to help out and also observe what goes on. These can be swopped if dates don’t suit and little siblings can be brought in too. We also ask you that bring the healthy fruit snack for that day. We really appreciate this help and can’t do it without you.. Playgroup is run by a committee of parents and employs two trained and experienced Playleaders. St Mirren coaches attended complete with their famous ‘Panda’. Other team exercises involved tyre sorting, water skills and ski boards. ALL S3 and S4 pupils were Heart Start trained on Friday and 400 pupils (including some staff) received their Heart Start Training Certificates at the end of the day. This involved CPR skills as well as recovery position training and assisting with a person (or baby) who is choking – invaluable skills for life. At the same time, S5 pupils took over Houston and Killellan Church Hall and learned all about Employability and associated skills from a huge variety of Personnel. S6 pupils acted as Pas for the day. They ably assisted all of the guests as well as having a big hand in the organisation of the various activities. Head Teacher Mr Colin Johnson said; “To have taken on the project of a Careers/Employability Day, with all year groups involved, and over 50 presenters was a quite daunting task – however I must state that I am overwhelmed with the response of our pupils and our staff. The P7 through to our S6 pupils have fully participated in the wide and varied programme on offer, and I am confident, as it is easy to see, that the pupils recognise the day as worthwhile and have enjoyed the experience. I would like to thank the many presenters, including many parents, for their valued contribution in supporting our pupils in considering positive choices beyond school. A fantastic day was had by all.’

Duchal Nursery School The end of term was full of fun, enjoying the fabulous weather in our new revamped garden a great space for learning and play. We had a lovely teddy bears picnic as well as a sausage sizzle during our Wednesday Lunch Club that runs as an extended hours activity each week. What a fantastic end to our year – the summer concert was just great with all the children having lots of fun performing to their audience - a wonderful finish to the year. Woodlands Day Nursery Woodlands Day Nursery has been open for 23 years in Houston and is in partnership with Renfrewshire Council. Alison and Rosie will be hosting an annual Open Day on Saturday 30th August from 2pm until 4pm. Everyone is kindly invited to come along to meet the staff and view the facilities on offer. All the boys and girls in the nursery are continuing to enjoy their Summer Programme with a host of activities on various themed weeks during the holidays. So far, they have had fabulous pool parties during their beach week when the babies enjoying splashing in paddling pools and making hula skirts. During Disney week, the Tweenie Room were invaded by beautiful Princesses and dastardly Pirates. The Rising 5’s enjoyed dressing up and having fun making tiaras, wands, masks and shields for their Princesses and Superheroes week.

Johnstone High School JHS Robot Club competed in the Scottish National Rampaging Chariots against 50 other robots from school and youth organisations such as the scouts and army cadets. The team consisted of 5 S4 pupils: Stuart Brown, Samantha Cook, Jonathon Reid, Abigail King and Ruiraidh Carmichael who had worked very hard all year during lunch times, after school and even came in on a school holiday. The robot was their second build and was based around an old pc case. JHS Robot Club competed admirably in all 3 events, winning second place in the robot Tug Of War event as well as collecting trophies for Best Newcomer and Most Innovative Design. In April, seven J-High pupils were very kindly invited to the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce networking lunch in the Lyndhurst Hotel, Johnstone. Accompanied by Miss Keenan they were a little apprehensive of mixing with the area’s business leaders but were made most welcome by Chairman Bob Davidson and his fellow members. The nerves didn’t last long and the Chamber was very impressed by the pupils positive attitude, confidence in approaching members and their ability to effectively communicate. Members offered advice to pupils and in return, the young people gave their views about business and opportunities in the local area and what they might contribute in the future. The pupils left having made excellent contacts and having started to build relationships with people who may well be their future employers or perhaps even fellow Board members! The children have been getting excited about summer holidays and days out as they enjoyed sharing lots of stories about airplane journeys and swimming pools. If you are jetting off to sunnier climates or maybe having fun in the Scottish sun, feel free to send us a postcard – we would love to hear all about it! The Out of School Care Holiday Club continues to have a fantastic time with outings and activities galore. The children celebrated the Commonwealth Games through a host of sports throughout the summer especially being able to watch the Queen’s Baton running through Houston. The children will continue their outings this month by visiting the Maritime Museum in Troon and Ayr Beach Park as well as, going ten pin bowling. They too, will also be participating in various themed days such as, Pyjama, Music and Pirate Days. As the new school term commences, Lynne and the staff would like to welcome all the new children and parents joining the Out of School Care and hope you all settle in well.

Kilmacolm Tennis Club Trophy Winners
for this year’s annual Millennium Tournament which was held on Saturday 5th July. The format for the event was mixed doubles partnerships playing in round robin groups. This year’s winners were Robbie Wishart & Susan Farr who defeated Peter Fraser and Janis Coyle in the final. In true Wimbledon style, strawberries, cream and Pimms were served in the midway break. Strathgryffe is offering non members the opportunity of a FREE taster adult/ intermediate tennis coaching session. Race 2 the games – Sailing Success for All A very memorable day was had on the River Clyde yesterday for everyone involved in Race 2 the Games - an accessible sailing boat race for people with additional support needs organised by Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park. This event is part of the Year of Homecoming Scotland 2014 celebrations and, for the competitors, their opportunity to be part of the Glasgow 2014 games. Cabinet Secretary for Commonwealth Games and Sport, Shona Robison said “Race 2 the Games is a powerful example of how sport can inspire communities and individuals with additional support needs to get active and give them an incredible experience of independence. All the participants should be very proud of their achievements. As a Supported Legacy 2014 project, Race 2 the games is creating a lasting legacy from the Commonwealth Games and making the most of Scotland’s first Centre of Excellence for disability sailing at the Castle Semple Centre, Lochwinnoch.”

Glasgow Bailie, Nina Barker welcomed all the competitors to Glasgow and Angie Malone, Winter Paralympic bronze medallist in curling at Sochi 2014, presented the Race day medals to all the competitors as they came off the water. Gerry Hughes, the first deaf yachtsman to solo circumnavigate the world via the Five Great Capes, gave an inspiring presentation to

Anyone inspired to try sailing, in any kind of dinghy can do so at Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park’s Castle Semple Centre, Lochwinnoch. The Park website www.clydemuirshiel.co.uk lists courses dates for sailing, kayaking and canoeing as well as other land based sports. The Regional Park aims to be accessible to all – that include walking trails, bikes and Visitor centres. Watch out for the next Clyde Muirshiel Regional Park organised accessible event – there are plenty to come including the Scottish Multi Class Regatta 2015.

Old Course Ranfurly are Champions
Sixteen of the clubs in the Renfrewshire Golf Union were able to field a top class team for the Club Team Championship which was hosted at Gourock Golf Club. It was sad to note the absence of some clubs who had won the event in the past and it is hoped that they can develop a team to allow them to compete in future years. In perfect conditions on a fair but testing layout, Bonnyton was first to make a challenge for the trophy which also includes a place in the Scottish Club Team Championship to be held at Lundin Links. William McMillan was one under par for 72 and David Sibbald recorded a level par 73. Unfortunately, Mark McMillan had an off day and his 82 meant an aggregate of 227. The home side was next to make the leader board with Steven Higgins making full use of local knowledge with an excellent three under par 70. So while Gourock contemplate the missed putts, the Old Course Ranfurly team can plan for Fife and dream about a trip to Europe if they win that one.
Classic Cars return to Castle Semple Country Park A classic car show will be held at Castle Semple Country Park, Lochwinnoch on Sunday 19th October from 11am- 3pm. This will be the fourth event of its type held at the scenic loch car park and has proved to be very successful. There is space for 80 cars to come and event organiser Jane Fawcett is looking for local cars owners to join her. “Last year we had lots of unusual cars enter into the show. Many classic and custom car owners don’t attend the Classic car show scene but last year we had many unseen-formany-years cars as owners were enticed to come down due to the scenic location and the hard standing used. As classic car owners, we usually get punted into a mudbath of a field, so the car park location is fantastic for keeping our much loved motors clean and shiny for the public to ogle! I’d love to see as many local cars there as possible. It’s been a busy time for the Ladies of Ranfurly Castle Golf Club recently with a fair number of competitions. On 23rd May the Dorrie Hunter Trophy was won by Jean Irvine (21), net 70, runner-up was JOY Mcleod (29), net 74. On 28th May thee Centenary Stroke play was won by Agnes Williamson (18), net 74, runner-up was Jan Macnab (15), net75. The Gran’s Competition was played on 11th June with Helen Crichton the winner (26) 33 points. The Vets Competition was played on 18th June with Joy McLeod the winner (28) 38 points and the Gillies Trophy was played on the same day with June Giles the winner (36) 37 points. On 13th June 23 Past Lady Captains joined forces in teams of 4 to play 13 holes and meet up for lunch afterwards. They were joined for lunch by 4 other past captains, one of those was Janet Gillies who had recently celebrated her 98th birthday. The winning team on the day were Helen Abram, Karin MacKenzie, Sheila Biggart, Fiona Roger with 63 points.

Kilbarchan Bowling Team welcome Indian Commonwealth Team
On the 13th July 2014, Kilbarchan Bowling Club welcomed the Indian Commonwealth team to a challenge match at Kilbarchan, as a warm up to the Commonwealth Games, where the sun shone all day. The teams consisted of five men and five ladies which, to commonwealth rules, gave us a single and fours game in the morning and pairs and triples in the afternoon. Watched by a large crowd, the Kilbarchan gents triples and fours were successful and the other Kilbarchan Teams gave a good account of themselves. The club organised Indian food for lunch, which was enjoyed by all present. The club presented the visitors with mementos of the club and in return we were presented with a ceramic figure of Ganesh - we were told if we rub it we would have good luck! Everyone attending believed it to be a wonderful day in the history of the club. The Kilbarchan gents triples, fours and the ladies triples won their district finals and all qualify for the Scottish National championships at Ayr in August. We wish these teams all the best. Does Fear hold you back?
Over the last few months, I have been incredibly busy with Personal Training and individuals looking for advice. I have met a wide range of people, having many discussions about health, fitness, nutrition, goals, wants, dreams and plans. With many people I meet, there is often an element of the ‘unknown’ over fitness and nutrition and a common theme emerged prompting this article… Many people feel like they don’t know where to start when it comes to health/nutrition/exercise, they fear being judged by others for their actions and don’t want to do things differently to what friends are doing or what’s classed as ‘the norm’. Many are simply scared to start as the mountain seems too high and too insurmountable… Within health and fitness, I see many people who are scared to start, scared to be different, scared to do the opposite of friends, scared to challenge themselves, scared to go outwith their comfort zone…
Hamish MacLaren - UK National Cycling Track Championships H a m i s h MacLaren of the Johnstone Jets travelled to Welwyn Garden City and took 2nd place in the UK National Cycling Track Championships in the Category C (under 12s) on Sunday 13th July. He was delighted to come second. The previous week he took part in the National Road Cycling Championships at Ilford and lead the race from the start but unfortunately came 9th in his age group.
The problem is, the best things in life are often obtained by some momentary adversity. You have to go outside your comfort zone… You have to venture into the unknown… Sometimes you have to ask for help… It’s ok to be scared or apprehensive, fear is normal, but without challenging this you will never challenge yourself, and never reach your goal. Usually people don’t get what they want by chance, they likely worked for it, challenged themselves and went out of their comfort zone to a place that was new and vulnerable to them. But that’s the beauty; you may be vulnerable or even scared, but it is only for a period of time that’s dependent on your goal… and then you can live exactly as you planned – healthier and fitter! Learner drivers to pay less for theory tests The cost of car and motorcycle theory tests will drop from £31 to £25 in October 2014, and then to £23 in October 2015.
The cost of the driving theory test will be cut by 25%, saving learner drivers in excess of £100 million over the next 9 years, Transport Minister Stephen Hammond announced last month. The fee for car and motorcycle theory tests will fall by £6 in October 2014, taking the cost of a test from £31 to £25, with a further drop of £2 in October 2015. Theory test fees for other categories of vehicle will also be reduced. The changes have been confirmed following a public consultation.
Keeping costs down for motorists
Transport Minister, Stephen Hammond, said: “We want to keep costs down for all motorists – that’s why we have frozen fuel duty – and by reducing the cost of the theory test we will save aspiring motorists around £9 million annually.” “This has been achieved without compromising on the vital role the theory test plays in making sure that new drivers know The Highway Code and the rules of the road. I am delighted that theory tests will now offer better value for money while continuing to meet these rigorous standards.” Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency Chief Executive, Alastair Peoples, said: “By agreeing new contract arrangements for the delivery of theory tests we have secured significant cost savings, and it is right that we pass these savings on to our customers. We want to make sure that we continue to keep pace with customers’ needs and deliver services in a way which is both convenient and cost effective.”
