this month.... Mixed news this month.
I was delighted to hear that the group, “Weir Saving our Village”, has offered to help meet the costs of improving the play area in Moss Road Park, Bridge of Weir. The group – formed to save the park from a sell-off for retail development – successfully campaigned for the Council to retain ownership of the park. The funds raised during their campaign became surplus to requirements. On a sad note, I’m sure that you will share my surprise and disappointment at the imminent closure of Bull’s Garage (see the adjacent page). If local rumours are to be believed the possibility of the business continuing as a going concern is not an option and consequently the buildings may be demolished. If true, what is to become of the site? The site of the garage includes the vacant land towards the River Gryffe, currently used for casual parking. This vacant land was referenced on the local plan and designated residential development, however, with the removal of the garage what is to become of this significantly larger plot. Rumours abound; more housing, affordable housing, a supermarket, a railway station, etc? I don’t know, but one thing is for sure, the convenience of the local garage which has been there as long as I can remember will be sadly missed. Not to forget the service which the Crawford family has afforded the community, having built the business over the years. Finally, and on a lighter note, I was highly amused to hear that there were, in fact, no nearly new babies for sale at the recent ‘Nearly New Baby Sale’ in Kilmacolm. I’ve no doubt though that some big brothers and sisters might have thought this would be a really good idea.

End of an era
C H Bull & Sons Ltd and C H Bull & Sons (Coachworks) Ltd As many of you will by now know we (the Directors) have taken the very sad decision to close both companies and wind up the business as of November this year. We have taken this decision due primarily to two Directors (Alan Crawford and Ann - Mrs John Crawford) wishing to retire and the impending maternity leave of a third Director (Heather Glass). We have been very fortunate over the years with our employees and we would like to thank them all, past and present, for their loyalty and service. We are delighted that many staff members have already found alternative employment and wish all employees continued success in all that they do going forward. We would also like to thank all of our customers for their many years of support and patronage. We have enjoyed being part of the local community and making so many friends over the years. Please pop into the shop for some final bargains!

The Old Peesweep Inn and the Peesweep Club by Bill Speirs of Johnstone History Society
The Peesweep Inn sat on the Gleniffer Road at the northeast corner of the crossroads east of Lapwing Lodge. All that remains to indicate the site is the raised patch of ground where the inn and its garden once stood. The inn was built between 1810 and 1840 when one traveller described it as “an old fashioned and bien howff where a farle of oatcake and a gill of mountain dew could be had”. It was still occupied as a private residence in 1931. In 1856 the inn was documented as a lowly one storeyed building with a kailyard behind and a rowan tree at the front, perhaps to keep witches and evil spirits away in this isolated spot. The proprietor of the Peesweep Inn was in the 1850s was David Stevenson, with his wife Barbara, their daughter Janet, and sons David and Thomas. Perhaps the most important guests who frequented the Peesweep Inn were a number of notable gentlemen from Johnstone, Paisley and Glasgow who called themselves the Peesweep Club. The Peesweep Club was formed in 1849 and the members met during April or May each year at the inn. They took part in various sports, some aquatic when there was sufficient water in the nearby Hartfield Loch (also known as the Peesweep Dam). After the initial round of sports the members would adjourn to the hostelry for dinner which would include the sma’ still whisky “that streams in the starlight when kings dinna’ ken”. The meeting would finish with a group photograph of the members, occasionally gathered posing round a wagon in the yard. Baillie Thomas Stevenson of Johnstone, who had been brought up at the inn, was one of the members and would surely have got a warm welcome from his sister, Mrs Muir, the landlady. ©2013 Bill Speirs

British Airways’ New Mega-Jumbo Last month saw the launch of BA’s new A380 airbus, the first British airline to offer flights on these mega jumbo aircraft. Those of you who have flown on this aircraft previously (most likely with Singapore Airlines, Emirates or Quantas) have expressed to us how great the experience was in terms of comfort and amenities on-board, but most importantly on the quietness and air quality. It is BA’s intention to phase out their 747 400 aircraft, affectionately know as the “Jumbo” and replace them with a fleet of A380’s. The increase in passenger numbers goes form 299 to 469 respectively in a seat configuration of 8 in First class, 97 in Club World on 2 levels, 55 in World Traveller Plus on the upper deck only and 309 World traveller on both levels with ond e m a n d a u d i o and video throughout plus an improved cabin service. You may be thinking it must take ages to board the aircraft..... but not so. I flew on an A380 from Los Angeles to Paris with Air France and was astonished how quick the boarding and disembarking process was, due to at least 4 air bridges being used on to the 2 levels simultaneously. The flight time was only just over 9 hours - this was due to the fact that the airbus can fly at an increased mph. The new planes will be used initially for flights to Los Angeles and Hong Kong from 22nd October, with Johannesburg being introduced next year all in and out of Terminal 5 with easy connections from Glasgow. Flying Long Haul just became a lot more pleasurable.
Preview on Sunday 3rd November. Now in its 29th year, the Show is very much part of the annual Scottish art scene and, since its inception, has raised well over £2.5 million for this worthwhile cause. Each year artists donate 50% of their sales to Macmillan, which allows the charity to carry on supporting people affected by cancer and their families throughout the West of Scotland. The committee’s firm aims are to feature works from emerging and established artists and to make art accessible and affordable to all. This year’s event will feature around 800 eclectic exhibits from paintings to sculptures, ceramics to jewellery and with prices from £50 to several thousands of pounds. Loyal supporter of the Show, artist Muriel Barclay, has kindly donated ‘Before Rehearsal’ - an exquisite example of her work featuring one of her signature ballet figures - as this year’s raffle prize. Once again the event will be staged at the Caledonia Galleries within the M&Co headquarters at Inchinnan by Renfrew, kindly donated, for the sixth year, by the McGeoch family and it will run from Monday 4th November to Saturday 16th November - open Monday to Saturday 10am until 5pm and on Sundays from 11am to 5pm. Returning artists such as Georgina McMaster, Lin Pattullo, Gordon Wilson, Jennifer Irvine and Helen Turner are just some of the artists whose work will hang alongside a wide range of pieces by newly invited artists such as Nichol Wheatley, Gregory Rankine, Stephanie Rew, Mo Shankland, Stanley Bird, Fiona Miller and many, many more. Macmillan funds a range of innovative medical, financial, emotional and practical services to reach and improve the lives of the 18,000 people in Glasgow living with cancer.

‘APPROACHING STORM’ BY PAISLEY COLOUR PHOTOGRAPHIC CLUB
Sculpture Tribute to Port Glasgow’s Past
Eleanor McEvoy at the Carrick Centre, Houston
The people of Port Glasgow have voted overwhelmingly for a new piece of public art paying tribute to the town’s historic past. ‘The Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow’ will stand on the flat-topped traffic island at the end of the dual carriageway at the western entrance to the town on Greenock Road.
Eleanor McEvoy achieved star status when her song ‘Only A Woman’s Heart’ inspired the title for, and appeared on, the ‘A Woman’s Heart’ anthology album. This album has since gone on to become the best-selling album in Irish history. Its 20th anniversary in 2012 saw nine soldout ‘Woman’s Heart’ shows at the Olympia Theatre. An intimate and powerful live performer she has appeared all over the world on numerous TV shows, films, festivals, and concerts. Her critically acclaimed canon of work spans eleven albums, forty singles, and appearances on numerous compilation albums. She is today recognized as Ireland’s most successful female singer-songwriter.
Inverclyde Council and urban regeneration company Riverside Inverclyde have been working together to improve and enhance the town centre to boost business confidence and to attract shoppers, new investment and jobs. Inverclyde Councillor Michael McCormick said: “Throughout August residents voted for their preferred choice from a shortlist of four designs. The very clear winner is John McKenna’s design which polled a total of 46% of the combined website and public library ballot box votes.” Already a striking ship’s hull sculpture ‘Endeavour’ has been installed at Fore Street as part of works to visually improve the town centre entrances. ‘The Shipbuilders of Port Glasgow’ pays tribute to the working people of the Clyde who built great ships and sent them to all corners of the world. Cast in stainless steel the orientation of the two figures on the traffic island site will allow people to see aspects of the sculpture from all angles.
Eleanor McEvoy is appearing at the Carrick Centre, Main St, Houston on Thursday 31st October. Doors open 8pm. £12 (payable at door). BYOB. For information or to advance book contact 07717 211057 or email: houstonfolkclub@gmail.com
Soroptimists support Guiding Paisley Soroptimist Club, a world wide organisation for women, has a new President this year. Mrs Nancy Fisher, an ex-guider herself has chosen to promote Guiding in Renfrewshire as her charity. We will be holding a series of fund raising events including a quiz night and a bridge lunch. We also fund raise for local and international charities such as Renfrewshire Women’s Association, Young Carers and Save the Children. We also support the anti-trafficking campaign in Strathclyde, Water Aid to Africa, a maternity hospital in Gambia and many other projects. The club meets fortnightly, second and forth Thursday in the Glynhill Hotel, Renfrew from September to June. If you would like to hear more details of our club, please check out our Soroptimist International of Paisley website.
KDS Panto Despite having such a large cast & the intervention of holidays, rehearsals for ‘Cinderella’ are going well, order is emerging amidst the apparent chaos, the singing & dancing are making progress, & some ‘swots’ are already putting their scripts away although the more bewildered among us still rely on the written word! Well done everyone! Tickets for this pantomime will go on sale in the Village Newsagent in Kilmacolm & usual outlets at the end of October - so don’t be caught on the hop. Buy early to avoid disappointment! And now for a panto fact: Pantomime has combined many elements of theatre throughout its existence, and by adapting has survived. The elements of ‘novelty’ & ‘topicality’ are key, but retained within a structured framework. To remain popular, this form of theatre has had to keep its eye firmly on modern trends, and by weaving these into its format, remains one of the most popular forms of entertainment in this country. A ‘traditional’ pantomime should have a strong story line. The fable or fairy tale should be well told, incorporating the all important elements of good battling against evil, and emerging triumphant. It can thus trace its roots back to the medieval morality plays, performed on village greens.

Meet Molly Scottish veterans at the Erskine Mains Home are enjoying the company of a very special new friend. The most adorable addition to the Erskine Mains team might be just a puppy, but she is taking her duties as a Canine Therapist very seriously! Molly is a Beagle puppy who is being introduced to life at the Erskine Mains Home by Manager Leslie Wylie. Although the Beagle breed can be a little naughty at the puppy stage, they are renowned for being extremely sociable dogs as adults and love people. The plan is that Molly will be like any other pet dog and will be spending quality time with Erskine residents. And as Lesley says, the benefits are clear: “It’s a well-known fact that having a pet around can lighten the heart and help reduce stress and Molly is clearly doing just that. Her charm is irresistible! Many of our residents had dogs or cats before they came to live at Erskine and are really feeling the benefit of having Molly around; those who are new to dogs are enjoying her company too. She’s a sociable wee thing and can’t get enough of the residents attention. Our goal at Erskine is to offer our residents the best possible experience – and Molly is certainly helping to do just that.” Residents are also involved in the very important task of making sure Molly is well looked after, as Lesley reports: “She is already being spoiled! One of our residents came back from a recent visit to the supermarket with two toys for her – and she has been on the receiving end of goodness knows how many treats.” Molly is currently enjoying gentle walks around the garden with residents, and once she is fully trained, will be a very valuable addition to the Erskine Mains team.
Beith Arts Sunday Concerts The 2nd concert of our 49th season will be held at 2.30pm on Sunday 27th October in the Community Centre, Kings Road, Beith. The musical group entertaining us will be a quintet called Regal Brass, which consists of 2 trumpets, a horn, trombone and tuba, and the 5 members of the group are experienced, professional performers who regularly play with all of Scotland’s national orchestras. They have been playing together since 1998, when they were all students at the RSAMD as we used to know it. They have developed their own style, which is both exhilarating and unmistakable, and will play a mixed programme which in their own words, could include music ranging “from Bach to the Beatles ….and Mozart to Madness!” Very obviously a concert not to be missed. Prices are £9 (£7 conc), children and students £2 (at the door). Refreshments are available at the interval. Do look at our website (www. beitharts.org) to find out more about us, and our aims and plans for the future. We also give detailed directions to the Community Centre, Members of our committee will be pleased to guide you to a seat and introduce you to some regular attendees to make you feel at home. - please just have a word with one of the people wearing badges saying `Committee Member` if it is your first visit. We look forward to meeting you.
Leap Achieve Charitable Status LEAP is delighted to announce success in becoming a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation (SCIO), established for charitable purposes. This has been an ambition of the project for some time, since our project area expanded beyond Lochwinnoch to include Kilbarchan, Howwood and Bridge of Weir. Since LEAP first secured funding for its project initiatives in April 2010, the project has been delivered through LMEG, Lochwinnoch Millennium Events Group, a company limited by guarantee with charitable status. LEAP are very grateful for the help, support and guidance provided to the project by LMEG, without this constituted body none of the initial project funding could have been secured. LEAP would like to take the opportunity to thank LMEG and its directors for their help and support, which has been critical to the success of the project to date.

On The Buses An interesting visitor to Kilmacolm on Saturday 17th August was this former London Transport ‘Routemaster’ bus, up from Reading with its present owner Adam Conner, and a party of vintage bus enthusiasts from that town. Adam, now living in Reading, is a former Kilmacolm resident. The mammoth trip, embracing next Lathalmond in Fife where it would be attending the Scottish Vintage Bus Museum’s Annual Rally and then Fort William, included retracing many of the routes the bus formerly traversed when poppy-red and yellow and owned by the new defunct ‘Clydeside’ company after it left London. The unusual livery accurately reproduces the livery it carried once before whilst still in London and commemorates and 150th anniversary of George Shillibeer’s introduction of the omnibus into that city. The ‘OMNIBUS’ was, in those days of course, horse-drawn! Many of these amazing vehicles, now over 50 years old, exist in preservation and have become iconic symbols of the london scene. A similar vehicle, restored to its original red ‘London Transport’ livery is sometimes seen about the area and it has been owned by myself for many years.

It is proposed to run a free vintage bus service from Bridge of Weir to cover this event. For details contact Brian Turner (01505) 613277.

Adopt-A-Monument
Kilallan Kirk and Graveyard – Living Ruin “Makeover for Medieval Kirk and Graveyard Commences” Kilallan Kirk Preservation Trust is pleased to announce that the preservation work, at Kilallan Kirk and Graveyard, is now underway. The preservation work is being carried out by CBC Stone; a specialist division of the CBC Group; a long established Glasgow based Construction, Preservation and Restoration Company. The work is expected to take approximately 20 weeks to complete taking us into the start of 2014. During this time, please note that the site will be closed to the public for health and safety reasons. To celebrate the start of the works the Trust held a big PR Launch on 24th September, attended by all those who have been involved in the project to date. Coverage of this event can be seen on our website. Whilst the contractors are on site, we will be filming the key elements of the work to include in our short film/documentary. We will also be targeting for interview, “local worthies” who have stories to tell about Kilallan and/or those buried there, so that we might include some of these stories in the film and/or on our website. If you have a story to tell or of you know of anyone who has any useful information to help us bring Kilallan to life, please contact Lynn Rew at lynn.rew@live.co.uk or Telephone 01505 874193 or 07595 461550. Last month we held another Gravestone Recording Training Session for volunteers from the local community, which was a great success. We spent two days on site with GUARD Archaeology learning about Geographic Positioning Systems (GPS) and Magnetometer and Resistivity Survey to accurately plot all visible gravestones and to establish whether further detailed geophysics would reveal buried grave markers. On completion of the on-site fieldwork, we spent a day at GUARD Archaeology’s offices in Glasgow, processing and linking the resultant digital data from the GPS and digital photographs, in a Geographic Information System, (GIS). The GIS allows us to add additional genealogical information, local historic tales and further digital data, over time, which will be able to be accessed by the public via our website. The volunteers all agreed that they had spent an interesting and enlightening few days with us.
Classic & Custom Car Show! Back by popular demand! On Sunday October 20th the Pre Ford 67 Club and friends will be displaying a fantastic range of classic & custom cars on the scenic shores of Castle Semple Loch. There will be less parking spaces than normal, leave your car at home or park in the village and walk to the lochside for a change.
Rotary Fun and Funds Some 120 members of Gryffe Valley Rotary and their friends had a great evening recently at their annual BBQ in Brookfield Village Hall. The event raised almost £2500 for local good causes, including upcoming visits for groups of Young Carers to Xscape and Pizza Hut. Rotary Ladies laid on a great spread with salads and desserts to supplement the meats and fish BBQed by Kilbarchan Scouts (the club was happy to make a contribution to Scout funds), ensuring that everyone was well fed. Angus Matheson organised the bar with fine wines and drinks to ensure that all were well watered. Favourite DJ Archie strutted his stuff (as only Archie can!) and ensured that everyone was up dancing and was well exercised, and Dan Mungin’s raffle ensured that everyone (well, almost everyone!) had a nice present to take home – thanks to the River Inn and others for donating their generous prizes. Good fun in aid of good causes – that’s what Rotary is all about!

Revamp your home Every home is full of possessions we love, with great stories attached to them. At ReVamp, this is foremost in my mind when looking at how homes can be improved to reflect changing lives and needs. Revamp is a new venture from myself, Lisa Davis, an experienced Interior Designer. Inspired by how individual we all are and how differently we all live, I provide a wide range of services to transform your home, giving creative input to come up with solutions you love. It’s your home, your way. As well as providing a full bespoke Interior Service, I can also help you create the home you desire from what you already have - an affordable alternative to “starting from scratch”, from up-cycling furniture to creating spaces that function well. ReVamp also works in conjunction with Davis Décor, offering a room clearance, pre-decoration service, along with putting that freshly decorated room back together… Should you be pushed for time in the run up to Christmas, my Seasonal Styling service would be ideal. Visit my website at www. revamp-yourhome.co.uk, call Lisa 07583 634557, or scan the QR code at the top of the page.

Showcase ‘flies’ for Dreamflight! After the great success of the national premiere of ‘PLANES’ on 11th August, the staff of Showcase in Paisley decided to continue their support of DREAMFLIGHT by taking part in a sponsored zip line from the roof of Xscape on 8th September! Eight brave people took part, including the General Manager, Kellie who had been the instigator of the whole idea and they were joined on the day by James Sammon, who had been on Dreamflight as a 10year old in 1993 and has already done a Skydive for the charity! The total amount raised by Showcase is now standing at over £16,500, with sponsor money still being totalled!! This money will go toward the 27th Dreamflight next month, when 192 special children will head off with a team of medical volunteers for 10 amazing days in Orlando. Photos: the Showcase Eight……. Before the event! James with Muriel Searl MBE, who had been his Group Leader back in 1993.

Artist studio tours Local artist and Sculptor in Ordinary to Her Majesty the Queen Alexander Stoddart has raised £1,800 for St Vincent’s Hospice in the charity’s 25th anniversary year. Sandy held three unique tours in his capacity as Ambassador for the local hospice. The first in May, an exclusive tour of his studio, was limited to just 10 lucky guests. A tour of Glasgow Necropolis in June and his recent walking tour of Paisley attracted over 50 people to each, there was even a waiting list set up once maximum numbers were reached.
Tough Mudder! Many thanks to Joe Gibson who took part in the Tough Mudder course on Sunday 25th August in Dalkeith, Edinburgh. Branching Out aids those suffering with mental health conditions and helps recovery and wellbeing through woodland activity.
The weather was tremendous with just one spot of rain for 30 seconds in the whole week and nudging on 30 degrees on most other days. The Scouts achieved many new experiences from Expedition Challenge to daily detailed inspections. The progress they made through the week was superb. They were lucky enough to be sleep over in a Nissen Hut at Cultybraggan, a site that held 4000 prisoners of war in World War II. Some of the highlights of camp were meeting a local Ghillie and learning about his work, swimming in Perth pool (to get clean and have some fun!), making pioneering catapults to have a water fight, open fire cooking, camp fire and sketches, backwoods cooking, learning about Fairtrade, skinning and eating fresh rabbits and lots of other great activities. Despite the dreaded Cleggs they all had an excellent time. The 42nd is very grateful to their young people, leaders and all the adults that helped make this a superb camp. Same weather next year please!

Golf Day Raises £1000 For Canine Partners A Houston man was on hand to receive a cheque from Rotarians after they raised £1000 for national assistance dog charity Canine Partners following their hugely successful annual Golf Day. Canine Partners volunteer and supporter Danny Gallagher received the cheque after the Cumnock Rotary Club chose them after a talk and demonstration by Danny earlier in the year. More than 60 players in 16 teams took to the greens of Ballochmyle Golf Course in Mauchline, Ayrshire, for the charity fundraising event. The Cumnock Rotary Club Golf Day was the 12th annual golfing event that the club has held. Danny Gallagher, who has been a volunteer puppy trainer for the charity which trains pups in Paisley and Stirling, explained: “We tend to choose charities which are lesser known and more deserving and it very much depends on the presentation we are given by the charity. “We all nominate a charity from the presentations that we have had, and I put Canine Partners forward. The other members agreed that it filled the criteria that we were looking for.” Canine Partners is a national charity that trains assistance dogs for people with physical disabilities including civilians and members of HM Armed Forces. The charity has 12 Scottish partnerships with three people on our waiting list for an assistance dog. Our dogs are trained to help with everyday tasks such as opening and closing doors, unloading the washing machine, picking up dropped items, pressing buttons and switches and getting help in an emergency. They also increase independence, confidence and self-esteem and bring companionship, a sense of security and increased social interaction. Ayrshire partner Zoe Maclean from Largs, who was partnered with Remus in 2011, said: “Remus has been trained to fetch help in an emergency, which gives both me and my family peace of mind that I am always in safe paws whether I am out and about or at home. “Alongside the practical help Remus gives me every day, the biggest and most precious gift is his constant friendship and companionship. I would not be without him; he is my best friend that is with me all the time. He doesn’t see my wheelchair or my disability and accepts me for who I am.”

‘My Pet Cat’ by Langbank Camera Club
Hey Big-Ears! Many parents will have given in to pleas for a small pet over the summer, and for some, rabbits make an obvious choice. Small and easily kept outside, they are docile and can be handled safely by young children. They are also unbearably cute! They have great character and can be very rewarding pets. However, although they are small and cheap to buy, they are incredibly complex little creatures and are similar in internal anatomy to a horse. This means they need more specialised veterinary attention than a cat or dog. Rabbits are not designed to live in a confined space. In the wild they cover an area equivalent to 30 football pitches. They’re not designed to live alone either - wild rabbits live in large social groups, foraging, grooming each other and huddling together for warmth. Rabbits living alone experience high levels of stress. A hutch should only be a shelter and not the only living space. It should be attached to a secure run of at least 8’ x 4’.
Re-homing Pets
Can you offer a home to any of our featured pets? ~~ Similar to Photo ~~ Charlie is only a baby at 12 weeks old. He is an all black very silky semi longhaired kitten. He is the most adorable boy. Ref: BC
Willow is an extremely friendly young black and white female. Willow is due her kittens very soon and should be ready for rehoming around the middle of October. If you would like to reserve this lovely wee girl please contact us. Ref: HM To contact the Renfrewshire Branch on 0141 876 4133. All rehomings are subject to a successful home visit. Del Boy - Age: 2-3 years - Male crossbreed. Del Boy has a fun loving character. Sometimes he can become over excited so he would be more suited to family with older children. Del Boy loves his walks and is very affectionate!
The Rabbit Welfare Association & Fund recommends a minimum hutch size of 6’ x 2’ x 2’, which allows rabbits some room to move, stand on their hind legs and enough space for the food, toilet and sleeping areas to be kept apart. It is commonly accepted that a rabbit should have space for 3 hops, but it is commonly underestimated just how far 3 hops is - our tests show that 3 hops from an average sized rabbit covers 6-7 feet! Please bear in mind that these recommendations are all minimums - and like many things in life, bigger is better! If you need any advice on housing, feeding, neutering or vaccinating your rabbit, or on any other aspect of rabbit care, call our experienced rabbit vets at PetVets on 01505 800366.
To contact the centre about any animals, please call 03000 999 999 or visit www.scottishspca.org/rehoming Jake - a 5-7 year old crossbreed. Jake loves his food and loves getting lots of attention and cuddles once he gets to know you. He needs a home with people who have had experience of owning a dog before who are willing to keep working with him to settle into his new environment. Jake loves to play and go swimming in the pond here at Dogs Trust. He is a very strong boy with lots of energy. He loves to show off and show you what he have learned through clicker training. With more than 1,400 dogs in our care at any one time – that’s a lot of dog food I’m sure you’ll agree! As well as feeding the dogs in our centres, every dog that leaves for their forever home will also get a free 2kg bag of Wainwright’s to take home too. This great new initiative will save much-needed funds for Dogs Trust and allow us to invest in caring for more dogs in the coming years.
Dogs Trust Gifts

Guide Dogs For The Blind
As you will see from the photo, horse dung was left on the pavement outside an angry reader’s house by an irresponsible horse rider recently.
Our Christmas range is now out! You’ll be transforming the lives of blind and partially sighted people across the UK with every purchase from our dogalogue - thank you.
According to the Highway Code, horses should not be ridden on the footpath and on the cycle path riders must dismount and kick any dung to the side.
If you are on the lookout for gifts for your friends and family – including your feline friends too, of course – then this year’s Cats Protection Card & Gift catalogue is here to help you. As usual, it is packed with several fantastic gift ideas as well as all the cards and wrapping paper you will need.

with Colin Fyfe of Colcom Whenever I get asked who might be the best broadband provider, I have always said it is the one with the best technical support. Over the years I have had to deal with the kind of ‘customer service’ that many of us are subjected to whenever we report a problem with our phone line or broadband service. The common issues are many, as I am sure you will know, but the final straw for me was the call centres leaking our details out the back door. These were sold on to the people that are plaguing us with these nuisance calls from abroad. One of my clients recently had her computer completely trashed by one of these, purporting to be calling from Microsoft. Please remember that nobody respectable will ever call you about your computer, so never give them access by doing what they ask of you. I have noticed an increase in the amount and variety of browser helper objects. The common ones are the ‘Delta Search’ and ‘Conduit’ add-ons. These will redirect your searches to useless sites and generally disrupt your sessions online. To remove these you should seek them out in the ‘Programs’ section of the control panel and remove. Then you will need to change your home page by going to ‘internet options’ in Internet Explorer or
the innocuous three horizontal lines in Chrome. Further to that you should remove them from your ‘Add-Ons’ in I.E. or ‘Extensions’ in Chrome as well as reviewing your search options in each too. I now issue a monthly email newsletter; please see my website, www. colcom.info, for details of that and other services that I now provide.

Royal Visit To Castle Semple Gryffe Valley Rotary was delighted to be invited to Castle Semple Centre on the occasion of the Princess Royal’s visit in her capacity as Patron of the RYA Sailability Programme. Last year Gryffe Valley Rotary was able to provide a special hoist to the Centre to enable disabled sailors to be transferred from a wheel chair into a boat. This was a key element in Castle Semple being able to attain Centre of Excellence status, the first in Scotland. This year, following a 10k fund raising run in May and with some generous sponsorship from Bridge of Weir Leather, enough was raised to enable a specially adapted dinghy to be procured. During her very relaxed and informal visit, the Princess was able to chat to a number of Gryffe Valley members and representatives of other groups involved in enabling disabled sailors to have the opportunity of sailing on the waters of Castle Semple. On the pontoon, the Princess cut the hand-over ribbon of Rotary’s new adapted dinghy and, as the photo shows, was able to watch a disabled sailor being hoisted into it. A great and rewarding day for Castle Semple and for Gryffe Valley Rotary Club!
Diaporama We have started our new session in our new venue - Carrick Centre, Houston. The highlight of the evening had to be ‘The Kendarrachan Cup’ - a game of football between 2 teams of crab shells (blue v red) with a whelk as referee!!!! A good time was had by all. Our next meeting is on Monday 14th October, 7.30pm in Carrick centre, Houston when Colin is doing ‘A Mystery Evening’. Visitors welcome.

Healthy Minds with Mo Ferrington, Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist
Digital addiction clinics to become the norm in 2013 The last decade has seen a massive rise in the time we spend attached to technological devices – but with big plans to digitise yet more aspects of our lives, is 2013 the year to go cold turkey? Smart-phones have revolutionised the way we share information, gain knowledge, communicate with friends and experience the world around us. With the advent of social media, we are now able to use our phones to upload thousands of photographs, publicly advertise the things we do, feel and ‘like’ and access a live stream of news happening across the world, from anywhere we happen to be. More and more parts of our lives are being integrated into smart-phone software – bank cards, travel cards, boarding passes, maps – even memories, friendships and relationships. Bit by bit, our ability to function without our mobiles is decreasing. More worrying still, Ofcom has recently reported that the UK is now the biggest user of mobile data in the world, having overtaken Japan in 2012.
get moving!
As a worrying side-effect of the digital age, more and more people appear to be developing ‘digital addiction’, symptoms include:
with Pauline Mullen, Physiotherapist
• feeling like you’re missing something important when you’re not logged in. • feeling frustrated or shifty when you’re not using your device. • unable to imagine life without your device. • spending large amounts of time using your device.
Get Moving! Keep Mobile! Stay Active! How many times a week do you think you should be exercising – and for how long? Well, Department of Health guidelines say it should be 5 times a week for 30 minutes each time, probably a lot more than you’d think! As a qualified physiotherapist that’s something I think we can all aspire to. My clients see huge benefits with regular exercise; improving and preventing so many medical conditions and making them feel great! There are so many fun ways to introduce activity into your everyday life; it’s really a matter of figuring out a plan that’s right for you. For example you can walk to the shops, take the stairs, or join a gym – a favourite of my 75 year old client Bill, who after recovering from major surgery joined a gym and his wife complains she never sees him Did you know? anymore! Regular exercise and activity In my 16 years of professional can help prevent and manage experience working in hospitals over 20 medical conditions and top rehabilitation centres we including: begin with manageable goals and • Heart disease together we work on “upping” your • Stroke activity levels. Being fit and active
• automatically using it without even thinking. • going bananas if your signal drops off. Hypnotherapy is leading the way for digital addiction treatment. If you think you’ve lost control over your use of the Internet then you might benefit from trying a hypnotherapy session. To find out more, give Mo Ferrington a call to help you put things into perspective, it’s only a case of a change of mindset. Mo Ferrington Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist 07775 594132.

Turning food waste into opportunity Renfrewshire is about to increase its impressive recycling rates with the roll out of a new food waste collection and recycling service. Residents are already recycling effectively; doing their bit for the environment by reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill and reducing the amount of tax that their council pays on that waste. On average, food makes up one third of the waste in our grey bins and the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012 places a statutory duty on all local authorities to provide households with a separate food waste collection service by 1 January 2016. This week, residents will start to receive all they need to make recycling food easy. A small 7 litre caddy and biodegradable refill bags to be used in the kitchen for all sorts of cooked or uncooked food: dairy, meat, chicken, bones, fruit, vegetables, bread, rice and pasta, fish, teabags and coffee grounds.
The Arran Challenge St Vincent’s Hospice have launched their 2014 weekend duathlon with an early bird booking discount. The Arran Challenge on June 7th and 8th starts with a scenic 42mile cycle to Lochranza on day 1 and follows with a 14mile cycle to Goatfell before trekking to the summit at 847m on day 2. Sponsorship of just £300 includes all transport, meals and accommodation plus free t-shirt and fundraising pack. Save 50% on your registration fee by booking before November 29th contact 01505 705635 or info@svh.co.uk
When full, the bags should be put in the outside 23 litre food recycling bins. These have secure lids and will create no more smell or pest risk than normal grey bins. The council will collect food caddies weekly. When they are close to running out of the biodegradable caddy bags, people should tie a bag to their outside food waste caddy when they put it out for collection. The council will then leave a free roll of replacement bags. It is important that only these bags are used to recycle food, as ordinary bin liners and carrier bags are not biodegradable. One half of Renfrewshire’s households will take delivery of their two caddies and a supply of food waste bags during week commencing 16 September. Their waste will be collected the next week on the same day as their usual bin collection. The remainder of households will receive their caddies and bags during the week commencing 23 September and collections will start during the following week. People who live in flats will get all they need to recycling their food waste later in the autumn. More benefits have arisen from this initiative; it has created work for 12 people to drive the specialist vehicles and 12 collectors. The good news continues with the processing of the food waste that Renfrewshire recycles. It will be taken to a treatment facility where it will be made into agricultural fertiliser and used to produce a gas that can be used to generate electricity. Residents are still being urged to continue home composting and recycling. This new collection service takes food that cannot be composted in a domestic setting. All Renfrewshire household will receive leaflets containing detailed instructions on how best to recycle their food waste.

Langbank Camera Club
School Closures
The Langbank Camera Club got off to a great start for the new season at the September meeting. A very informative presentation about the support for Military Veterans at Erskine Hospital provided moving detail for all attending the session, and the amazing work that goes on to rehabilitate those affected by conflict. Members took the opportunity to plan the activities of the Club for the forthcoming months and enjoyed viewing summer photographs and stories, along with the entries for the monthly competition. The subject of ‘Sport’ brought in a wide selection on the night and at the next meeting the subject will be ‘birds in flight’.
I will be supporting parents and pupils to get the right outcomes for Renfrewshire pupils regarding the programme of closures and amalgamations of schools and nurseries across Renfrewshire.

Anyone is welcome to the ext meeting on Monday October 14th, in the Church Halls at 7:30pm.
Carbon Monoxide Alarms
watching the clock as we get ready to turn back time in October, here are some fun clock gift ideas Melting Clock
The Melting Clock makes a fabulous unusual gift for those who love the weird and wonderful. Imagine giving this to your art student friend as a home gift or Birthday present? Perhaps someone in your family loves funky, cool clocks. The Melting Clock not only tells the time, but is a work of art too.
I have been approached by a number of constituents with regards to the upkeep of play parks in the Bishopton area. I understand this is a matter of concern for a number of residents and I have contacted Renfrewshire Council.
Since my last column was published, I have, in my ministerial role, delivered changes to building regulations that requires the fitting of alarms warning against the presence of poisonous carbon monoxide. The regulations will require carbon monoxide alarms to be fitted when a new or replacement boiler, or other heating appliance, is fitted. This is great news for the people of Renfrewshire. Carbon monoxide poisoning can have a devastating effect on people’s lives. Lives are lost every year in Renfrewshire from this silent killer and these measures will hopefully help reduce the number of victims of poisoning.
Surgeries are Back Last month Parliament reconvened following the summer recess. During the recess, as well as still being busy in my role as Minister for Local Government and Planning, I held a number of street surgeries across the constituency. I thoroughly enjoyed speaking with residents regarding their concerns and issues. If you did not manage to see me and you have a matter you wish to raise, my regular surgery programme is now back up and running. Please call my office on 0141 885 2076 for details.
One World Celebration Nerf Target Alarm Clock
This cool kids alarm clock is a great to get them up and out of bed! It works with any standard foam dart gun and if you manage to shoot the target, will set itself to snooze. It also works if you tap the top! Displaying the time, date and temperature, this is an awesome boys alarm clock for a stocking filler.

BACKWARDS Clock
Like something out of Alice In Wonderland this is an innovative device which works in an anti-clockwise motion that will tick tock backwards, while the numbers read backwards too! Forget your lunch as you take time deciding whether it is quarter past one or quarter to one and send your mind mad as you confuse your ten past three meeting with ten to three mayhem! For the second year running, the local Fairtrade group is organising an event to mark One World Day to take place in the Royal British Legion hall in Bridge of Weir on Saturday 2nd November. This was a great success last year and promises to be even better in 2013. There will be a variety of stalls, including crafts from Peru and Palestine and fairly traded goods from Rainbow Turtle. Enjoy tea, coffee and fairtrade baking while enjoying music from around the world courtesy of the Houston Folk Club and choirs from the local Primary schools. For only £2 a ‘Third World Lunch’ can be purchased; try Turkish lentil soup and African stew with rice from Malawi. This is an occasion to celebrate the place of our own communities in a shared world, so we are delighted that Brighter Bridge of Weir will be supporting the event again and that the LEAP car club will also be there. This promises to be a really enjoyable and worthwhile event so we hope to see you there!

You can enjoy a cake plus a cup of Fairtrade tea or coffee, and find out more about how to make truly “One World”. Tickets £2 for adults, with children free. There will be a competition and activities for Primary aged children based on the “One World Theme”, Fairtrade groceries for sale, you will also be able to order Fairtrade Christmas Hampers and Charity Christmas cards ( a percentage of the proceeds from the sale of cards is allocated to Tradecraft, Christian Aid and SCIAF).
Christmas Art And Crafts Fair On Saturday 16th November (10am - 3pm) at Bishopton Community Centre, Bishopton Art Group will host their annual Christmas Art and Crafts Fair. Local amateur artists and crafts people will offer a variety of products for sale that will make ideal Christmas presents. The venue has free parking and is a 5-minute walk from Bishopton railway station. This year there will also be a children’s art activity area, supervised by some of the artists. Bishopton Art Group has recently welcomed several new artists to the group and their paintings will also be on sale. Mr William Stewart, organiser of Bishopton Art Group’s Christmas Art and Craft Fair said, “This year we have several new members in Bishopton Art Group who are looking forward to exhibiting their paintings for the first time. We are also introducing a children’s’ art activity area. There will be something for the whole family. Tea, coffee and some great home baking will be available. Admission is free.” Langbank: At the Community Council meeting in September I reported issues including overgrown road verges and the perennial drainage problem on Station Road, which may have been caused by work done by a utility contractor. I am assured that repair works will be carried out by the Council during the current financial year. Bishopton: The Dargavel development is progressing rapidly. Any site with a manufacturing history requires to be confirmed as safe before residential development is permitted. I recently spoke to the Council officers who had a monitoring role and was impressed with their vigilance in ensuring that all tests were clear. I also confirmed this with the Project Manager from Bae Systems. A member of my family has since bought a house there and I am looking forward to trying her homegrown vegetables! Bridge of Weir: Road conditions and closures have featured significantly over the summer months. The repair programme is very expensive, but I shall try to ensure that the Council continues to maintain the roads and footpaths in the villages. Trains: I have written to Railtrack regarding the concession fare inequity in relation to the villages that have no bus service as an alternative to rail. Buses: At the Local Area Committee meeting in August, it was clear that some people had not read my July article! I mentioned that “My Bus Rural” is available for anyone living in a rural area, which is not covered by a regular service. There is no age or mobility requirement. They can be contacted at 0845 128 4025 or www.spt.co.uk/bus/mybus. Contact: email: cllr.maria.brown@renfrewshire.gov.uk, phone: 0300 300 1259, mobile: 07534 148 734. Las Vegas Meets Bridge Of Weir Brighter Bridge of Weir is bringing the bright lights of Las Vegas and the elegance of Monte Carlo to the village on 26th October. To help raise funds for their work the group have secured the services of Pink Cocktails Fun Casino, providers of professional casino entertainment for fundraising occasions. So, for one night only, the Royal British Legion hall in the village will be transformed into Casino Royale, or Caesars Palace, or the Luxor whatever you want it to be. Imagine what it might be like to be James Bond or a Bond Girl for an evening. Or maybe you’d prefer to be one of Ocean’s 11 - Brad Pitt? Catherine Zeta-Jones? Why not really get into the swing of things and wear a tuxedo or a cocktail dress - you might win even a prize for it! There will be roulette and blackjack tables with professional croupiers, and there will be other events too. And the best thing of all is - nobody loses! Simply buy some Fun Money and exchange that for casino chips. Those with the most chips left by the end of the night will be eligible for a variety of prizes, Brighter Bridge of Weir gets a boost, and everyone has a great time! What’s not to like about that? Look out for more information posted throughout the village over the next couple of weeks, and on the group’s website: www.brighterbridgeofweir. org And be sure to keep your diary free for Saturday 26th October. Whether you prefer your martinis shaken or stirred, you will have great fun and you’ll be helping to keep your Bridge of Weir brighter and better.

I had reports of several near misses on the Bridge of Weir Road – the A761 – due to surface water lying and cars aquaplaning or throwing water onto the windscreens of oncoming vehicles. This was due to a choked sewer which is the responsibility of Scottish Water. I contacted Scottish Water who did clear the drain but there appears to be an ongoing, if intermittent problem with the sewers in the area and I have written further to Scottish Water requesting more extensive investigations of the sewer system in the area. There is concern that the barrier replacement programme on the Erskine Bridge will cause significant delays over the next 10 months. The closure of the north on-slip from the Spectacles roundabout means a significant detour for Bishopton residents adding time and cost onto their journey. The 10 month timescale for replacing the barriers seems overly long and I have written to the Transport Secretary asking if it might be possible to shorten the timescale (and at the same cost) by utilising more workers. The Council will include repairs to the drainage system on Station Road in Langbank as part of the next drainage contract. Water runs down the road and causes flooding at the bottom at least in part because of the blocked drains. It may take a bit of time for the work to be done – but it will hopefully stop the almost guaranteed flooding and dangerous icing in cold spells.
On display will be local scenes from Kilmacolm, Houston, Paisley and also some of his recent internationally exhibited prints including from the Landscape Photographer of the Year 2012 and the ‘Illusion’ Exhibition at the Centre for Fine Art Photography in the USA.

BoW Tenants & Residents (TARA) The September meeting was well attended with some new faces present. The police report showed crime figures for Bridge of Weir halved between July and August. There was however a warning regarding the theft of high performance cars over the region as a whole. Metal thieves have also been busy removing gates, fencing, etc.. Cllr. James MacLaren highlighted his success in getting Thriplee Road and Lomond Crescent adopted by Renfrewshire Council. He was however met with derision when he brought to the table his proposal to form a Donaldfield Residents Association. It was pointed out to the councillor that the present Tenants and Residents Association represented the whole village. Renfrewshire Council will be distributing food waste caddies to households between the 23rd and 29th September. The use of these caddies is not presently compulsory. The next TARA meeting will be held on the 15th October at 7.30pm in the Pirie Centre at Freeland Church. As always the meeting is open to all tenants and residents of the village so come along and air your views.

kilbarchan & lochwinnoch Kilbarchan has had road resurfacing work in Barn Green and High Barholm, repair to the footpath outside the Coop, and refurbishment of the car park at the rear of Ewing Street. Members of the Community Council thanked the staff of Renfrewshire Council for the improvements undertaken in the village. Some homes in Kilbarchan suffered discoloration to their water supply over the weekend of 17th/18th August, and I contacted Scottish Water who responded quickly to the concerns. This problem followed a burst pipe, and advice to customers was to run the supply for a short period of time until the discolouration cleared. If you continue to have problems in this area please let me know as I wish to monitor events. Residents in Lochwinnoch who use the train, will be pleased that the changes to the Glasgow Ayrshire daytime services on weekdays and Saturdays, have resulted in an improved half hourly service for the village. I would hope that the half hourly service can be extended to mid and late evening services and will work for this improvement. However, the bus from the station to Johnstone does not run a timetable to meet the train, and I have taken this matter up with the bus companies. Kilbarchan Primary School Parent Council worked hard to improve the play facilities in the school playground. I am delighted that funding from the Big Lottery and from Kilbarchan Build Our Park fund has helped towards the purchase of two activity trails for the junior and senior playground. I attended the opening of the trails on 3rd September, and the enthusiasm of the children was there for all to see. It was an event enjoyed by everyone. Surgeries: Saturday 5th October 9am at the McKillop Institute and 10am at the Steeple Hall. Contact: cllr.derek.bibby@renfreshire.gov.uk or phone 07534 156007.

kilbarchan & lochwinnoch Over the last few months I have been campaigning for new street signs for many areas in Kilbarchan which are currently sub standard due to either age, wear and tear, or car collision, which is sadly the most common cause of damage. Of special note is the fact that soon the entrance to Kilbarchan at Cartside Terrace will have a special sign at my request which says “Kilbarchan – a conservation village”, to emphasise the distinctiveness of Kilbarchan as a place of some antiquity. At the last meeting of the Johnstone and Villages Local Area Committee, I was pleased to move that the Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch Guides, one of our traditional youth organisations which does great work in our villages, be granted £450 to continue their activities. I think the Johnstone and Villages LAC should have given the Guides more, but due to the high number of previous awards at the last LAC to bodies, predominantly based in Paisley and Renfrew, which have their own LAC’s. Charity begins at home and my warnings about profligacy were not heeded. The Labour administration has published its school estates plan for Renfrewshire. The plan notes that the building at Lochwinnoch Primary is one of the worst in Renfrewshire, due to its age, so I have written to the Head of Education calling for a timescale for the creation of a new Lochwinnoch Primary fit for the 21st Century, which I believe is now overdue. All investment in the existing school is welcome, but I want to see a new build facility in the village and a timescale for its creation as Lochwinnoch parents and children deserve no less. My Kilbarchan advice surgery is on the second Wednesday of the month, excluding July, at the new time of 7:45pm in the Steeple Hall, and my Lochwinnoch advice surgery is on the fourth Wednesday of the month, excluding July, at the new time of 7:30pm in the McKillop Institute. Kilbarchan Fair Trade Steering Group
Kilbarchan Fair Trade Steering Group met this month in the Ladies’ Room at the Steeple. Next event on the calendar is a Fairtrade curry night at the Glenleven Inn, from 5pm to 9pm on Friday 4th October. The curry will be made from Kilombero rice from Malawi and sauces from Swaziland. It will cost £5.95 for a curry and a pint or small glass of wine. Every kilo of rice sold contributes to the education of a rice farmer’s children. Some of the ingredients are available in Bobbins, where even more shelving has become available for Fairtrade products. The shelves are regularly refreshed with sauces, spices, gifts and children’s toys. On 22nd November the Fairtrade Steering Group will hold a cheese and wine in the Old Library, at which Liz Cotton of Rainbow Turtle, Paisley, will talk on her visit to Nepal. Photo shows some of the new Fairtrade goods..
Weaver’s Cottage, Kilbarchan The Weaver’s Cottage closes for the winter on Monday 30th September. It has been a busy and varied season with most visitors from the UK, and others from the Ukraine, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the USA. Visitors will have seen a rag rug being manufactured by staff and volunteers. This year’s rag rug will be handed over to the David Livingstone Centre, Blantyre, Lanarkshire. The rag rugs in Burns’ Cottage were made in the Weaver’s Cottage, and there is an example in the Tenement House. Photo shows the outgoing rug.

Many interesting and varied activities are held in the Centre. To find out about details you can visit www.kipcokil.com phone 01505 706070, look at the notices in the window or visit the Old Library. The opening hours are Monday to Friday 10am -12 noon and 2pm - 4pm. We are always surprised by the number of people who still think that the Centre is run by Renfrewshire Council. The registered Charity- Kilbarchan Improvement Projects (known as KIPco) is the Company which manages the Centre and comprises of six volunteers who are Kilbarchan residents. It is another support team of local volunteers who keep the Centre functioning and the many people who continue to give financial support through their usage of the facilities and their donations. This support team carry out many tasks. They do the set up and clear down the seating for concerts and meetings, maintenance tasks, keep the web page up-to-date, do gardening and help with fund-raising ideas and products. They are presently producing a Kilbarchan Calendar for 2014 this should be on sale very soon. We hope that you will consider supporting the Centre by buying this calendar and wish to thank the local businesses for their support.
Things Are Fizzing Again At The Old Lemonade Factory Community Buyout Public Meeting Wednesday 2nd October at 7.30pm in the Parish Church, Lochwinnoch
Exciting news! Struthers factory site is up for sale and Lochwinnoch village has the right of first refusal through our community ‘right to buy’ which we gained 6 years ago. LCBG (Lochwinnoch Community Buyout Group) members are planning a public meeting to remind everyone of the plans for the site, outline what the village is required to do to comply with the legislation (namely, to hold a ballot of all villagers by December) and to recruit the many people we will need – right now – to make this a success. There’s lots to do - raising funds (through Big Lottery and others), developing the business plan, publicity, leafleting. Please come to the public meeting, find out how you can contribute and help the dream become real! Time is short – we need you NOW! A number of activities are being considered for the site. It is intended to: • restore the old schoolhouse for use as a museum with office space for either social services or businesses. • develop a production facility, possibly incorporating a microbrewery and water bottling plant, utilising the spring well. • develop workshops for businesses including local artists and crafts people. • use the open space for horticultural use including perhaps an orchard and glasshouses providing fresh locally produced organic fruit and vegetables. • use other space within the site for cultural and leisure purposes e.g. sports hall/theatre space/filmhouse/music venue possibly with recording studios and facilities to benefit local musicians. • integrate infant and youth facilities within this space for example with a soft play area and flexible meeting space for other groups such as the elderly.

Heartstart Now In Houston
At the Crosslee Crescent Co-op Store - Public Access Defibrillator Kindly donated by the Heartstart Gryffe Group (An initiative of the British Heart Foundation). A cardiac arrest is a condition where the heart suddenly stops working properly. If you suffer a sudden Cardiac Arrest away from a hospital in the UK today, your chances of survival are only about 5%. Prompt defibrillation is often the only way someone will survive. ANYONE CAN USE IT—THE MACHINE DOES ALL THE WORK However, the staff at the Co-op and Whispers Chinese Restaurant attended a training evening on CPR and familiarisation with the Defibrillator. The Gryffe Group are grateful to Whispers for providing the venue. Early resuscitation and prompt defibrillation can result in 60% chance of survival. The Heartstart Gryffe Group offers free CPR training to local groups or individuals. If you are interested, please contact Kate Jackson on 01505 613676. There is also a Public Access Defibrillator at the Bridge of Weir Co-op Store.
Houston Community Sing-along - The Big ‘Summer Holiday’ Sing This was a happy event on 6th September with an appearance from some real Teddy Bears at the Teddy Bear’s Picnic thanks to Forgotten Dreams in Johnstone and staff from the Houston Inn, The Fox and Hounds and the River Inn. We had accordion accompaniments from Alexander Young, instrumental and vocal accompaniments from Gryffe High, and Jan Anderson on the piano; and the Houston and Killellan choir helped to keep the singing going. Woodlands Nursery, St Fillan’s Primary, the Gryffe High Jazz ensemble, and Houston and Killellan’s inimitable Norrie Cochran and Peter McKerrell performed and gave the audience wee rests from singing; and the Scouts and Guides, Cubs and Brownies invited us to a campfire where we sang some choruses. We even managed two part and four part singing and an action song as well! A big thank-you as well to all the folk who helped to move staging, collect the money, generally steward the event and clean up afterwards, as well as dealing with the sound and vision requirements. Apart from singing, the audience donated around £670 (+ £50 from Gift Aid) for the two local good causes - the Crosslee Playpark Improvement group, and the Houston and Killellan Kirk Extension. The next Big Sing - the Big Christmas Sing - will be on December 20th. Please put the date in your diary and come along for an enjoyable two hours of singing. All donations will be for the Syrian Crisis Appeal.

Regarding the proposal to create a 2 hour time limit on the Cargill Centre car-park as part of the Council’s Decriminalised Parking Enforcement scheme, many feel that two hours is simply not suitable due to a number of reasons including the average duration of a class in the Community Centre, going for lunch in the village and members of staff who work in the village. The issue was also discussed at a recent meeting of Kilmacolm Community Council and I have raised these points with officers in the Roads Department. The final decision hasn’t been taken yet and will be taken in recognition of supporting local residents and local businesses. The consultation responses are being analysed by officers and will be subject to a report before Councillors on the Council’s Environment & Regeneration Committee. A steering group was set up to explore the initiative of Kilmacolm being twinned with the French village of Mérignies and members of the group visited Mérignies. I attended a recent meeting of the steering group and it was great to hear about the visit to Mérignies and the very welcoming reception held. At the meeting it was announced that a visit to Kilmacolm by a group from Mérignies is expected to take place in the first weekend of November and funding is required to help facilitate this visit. As a result of the meeting I am enquiring with officers to establish whether any support is available for the visit in November. kilmacolm & quarriers I am pleased to report this month that a contractor has been appointed for a new surface for Birkmyre Park play area and the work will be carried out shortly. Also, improved Christmas decorations will be provided in Kilmacolm this year following representations from local residents. Since the start of April we have spent £1.7m on carriageway repairs across Inverclyde. The challenge is how we maintain our investment in roads to clear the backlog of repairs. We need around another £12m to do that. One way would be to increase the Council Tax to pay for the additional borrowing. Council Tax has been frozen for 6 years and is likely to be frozen again for a further two years as a condition of the Council’s funding settlement from the Scottish Government. A fairly modest Council Tax increase of 2% in each of the following two years would go a long way to providing the funding we need to clear the backlog of roads repairs. If the Scottish Government was to allow us the freedom to increase the Council Tax would local taxpayers support such a proposal? I would welcome your feedback. The new £42m Port Glasgow Community Campus will open its doors to pupils on Friday 25th October. The campus will be home to Port Glasgow and St Stephen’s High Schools and the new Craigmarloch School for children with additional support needs. It will also provide a range of fantastic sports and community facilities for this part of Inverclyde. Whist Drive Tuesday 19th November - Howwood Village Hall at 7.30pm: Catered by Mrs J Burns Hi there many of you may have been at the meeting organised by Douglas Alexander MP concerning the speed of broadband in the village. Over 200 people attended the meeting and it was quite clear that there is a lot of frustration and anger at the poor service currently being provided. We will find out in October where Howwood features in the programme for improvements in the service. I certainly hope Howwood will be one of the first areas to benefit from future investment. Parents will be asked about the future provision of Primary education in Johnstone. Views will be sought from the Parents of children who attend St Anthony’s and they will have plenty of opportunity to let there views be known starting with a meeting in Johnstone High School on the 22nd October. I expect there will be a good turnout for this consultation. I am currently working along with others to secure the future provision of a Post Office facility in the village. I would welcome any views from readers on this issue. Finally remember I hold my surgery in the Village Hall on the fourth Thursday of every month between 6pm and 7pm.

outdoors Paisley Colour Photographic Club www.paisleycolour.co.uk During the session PCPC participates as a Club in numerous external competitions. These dovetail with and are an extension of the internal competitions which are integral to our syllabus. Throughout session 2012-13 the Club participated in two Photographic Society of America Inter Club Competitions, Projected Image and Nature, with some success. In the Projected Image Division promotion to class B was achieved and in Nature our position in class A was retained. There were some notable individual successes. “End of the Line” Duncan MacDonald (above right) achieved a Best of Show Award.
Gryffe Camera Club
At our first meeting of the 2013-14 session, President Kate Cummings opened the meeting, followed by a ‘quick guide’ on ALL you need to know about getting good pictures by Andy Stark, one of Gryffe members who is a professional photographer. Presented as being ‘for new members’ there seemed to be a lot of interest and mental note-taking going on among the ‘experienced’ members too. Following this were two Audio-visual presentationsthe summer Wednesday evening outings and ‘Postcards from Millport’. Finally Bill Crookston gave a demonstration of photo mounting on mounting board, so that we can show our images off to their best advantage. Next time we will be looking at images we have taken over the summer. We were set a challenge of using our cameras ‘out of our comfort zone‘. We will also be choosing workshop groups for the year .These small groups provide the chance to work on specific topics e.g., portraiture, landscapes, macro-photography.
Awards of Merit were gained by “Through the Mire” James Dunlop (right); “Autumn Light Kilchurn” Joan Thomson (above); “Dawn Mist” Pat Cook (below right); “Storm Light” Robert Fulton (below). “Female Common Blue” Jim Black (bottom right) was awarded an Honourable Mention. Please consider joining PCPC members at our Thursday evenings meetings, 7.30pm until 10pm from September through to the end of April. These take place at the William McMaster Community Centre, Donaldson Drive, Renfrew PA4 8LX. New members and visitors are assured of a warm welcome. The Garden in October
Late summer and autumn merge slowly together, and it is often difficult to categorise perennials that flower at this time of the year as belonging to one season or to the other. To a large extent, the autumn perennials form a bridge between the two seasons. As summer fades, the tall branched flower stems of Japanese Anemones become covered in lovely blooms. Planted in drifts rather than in isolated clumps, they are perfect for the mixed border, where their foliage can form a cover between shrubs and other perennials during the summer. ‘Honorine Jobert’ (pictured rop right) is a particularly choice variety with white, single flowers, tinged with pink on the underside of the petals. Flowering from August to October, it is fully hardy and fast-growing, preferring well-drained soil in sun or partial shade. Mulch around the plant each year. As anemones do not like being disturbed only lift and divide, if needed, about March/April. Anemone ‘Alice’ (left) Anemone ‘Bressingham Glow’ (bottom right)
Marching to Autumn The Windows on Wildlife Project aims to bring people closer to wildlife, gaining unique insight to the furry & feathered inhabitants of Castle Semple Country Park. Project Officer Hayley Douglas gives us an update.
WoW Event Updates The Badger Watches were very popular in August and were all fully booked. It’s a great experience sitting and listening for what might be about, just as it starts to get dark. The blackbirds were very helpful and started alarm calling over the sett when the badgers were emerging and we heard them scratching and crashing through the undergrowth, but unfortunately they did not head over to where we were waiting. However, we did see the deer and the foxes and the most memorable experience was the Barn Owl that flew in behind us and landed 3 feet away from the group. It observed us as much as we did it before heading off and we were treated to it hunting in the field behind us. That is ‘The Watches’ finished for this year now, they will be resumed again in the spring. On Tuesday 1st October the Windows on Wildlife project will be one year old. To celebrate this there will be a WoW weekend at Castle Semple on the 12th and 13th October from 10am - 4pm. Come along and see the footage that has been filmed during the summer as well as trying out some of the equipment for yourself. There will be other events during the winter months such as a Poo and Pellet analysis day and a tracking workshop.
Wildlife News During the summer months the Rangers, along with a group of international volunteers from Xchange Scotland, constructed an artificial otter holt on Castle Semple Loch. With the help of the new endoscope camera we can see that something has been investigating the holt, but at the moment we are not sure what. One of the motion cameras is going to be relocated and hopefully it be able to report on who has taken up residence.
Otter filming is in progress at the moment - a lot of its time is spent eating eels, but as yet we’re not sure if this is one of the females or the new male who has been reported in the area. The young roe deer are still doing well and an interesting piece of footage showing an interaction between a rabbit and a grey squirrel has been caught on camera. To watch for yourself go to http://youtube/xJepemFwLcI. Autumn is here and the animals and birds are preparing for it. The badgers were looking thin after the dry summer, but they are back up to normal weight now and are making the most of the food available in the Park. The wood mice have been seen gathering up the peanuts to store for the winter and there has been an increase in sightings of song thrushes. Hopefully we won’t be in for a bad winter.
More Info… Details can be found on the Parks website page www.clydemuirshiel.co.uk or by emailing wow@ clydemuirshiel.co.uk. Footage can be viewed on the Park’s Youtube channel or on the WoW Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/ WindowsonwildlifeatClydeMuirshiel. Talks to groups can be arranged if you are interested in finding out more about your furry and feathered neighbours. Lawn Care for October Remove worm casts by brushing with a broom before mowing. Early October is the last chance to aerate / top dress / feed the lawn before winter if you haven’t already done so. Raise the height of the lawn mower blades and reduce frequency of mowing. Remove any leaves / debris that has fallen onto the lawn using a rake / leaf blower. Keep an eye out for lawn fungal diseases. Information source:- www.lawnandmower.com/Lawn-Calendar.aspx

Bridge of Weir Horticultural Society Flower Show Our Flower Show was held towards the end of the sunniest summer this century. The hall was filled with the aroma of Sweet Peas and tangy Onions and Leeks. There was a dazzling display of Dahlias, Fuchsias and flowering herbaceous. Jim Carruth was the guest of honour. He reminisced about his experience of the vegetable patch and, as a poet of renown, gave a view of gardening from a different angle: “Hard Graft of the Garden Birds” which he wrote specially for the occasion. Do you prefer leaflets or phone apps? Let us know by going to the Park website to view the online consultation.
ICOD Ramble at Greenock Cut 15 people took part in the first Inverclyde Council on Disability (ICOD) Ramble along the 4.5km (3 miles) of scooter trail along the Greenock Cut aqueduct. There are now two scooters available for daily use, look on line for details or phone the Centre on 01475 521 458 to make a booking.
High Temperatures, but no blue-green Alage The final water sampling of the 2013 summer season has taken place and, like all previous samples this year, the levels of blue-green algae present in the Loch were low. There were no significant algae blooms at all on Castle Semple Loch this year even with the high temperatures during July that usually provide ideal growing conditions. ‘Anabaena circinalis’ is the species that can cause water quality issues, but amazingly there was very little of it this year. If you have any queries about the water quality at Castle Semple Loch please ask a member of staff.
Volunteer with Clyde Muirshiel If you are looking for a great way to get out and get active, the Regional Park can help. We have a ‘Thursday programmes’ underway at Castle Semple and a ‘Saturday programme’ at Greenock Cut Centre.

The main news this month is that our application for substantial Lottery (Awards for All) funding has been successful, as a result of which we have placed our order for the planters for the Piazza. We had been hoping that things would come together in time for autumn planting and so it now looks as if we will be able to have some winter colour and the promise of spring bulbs to look forward to. If you have registered as an ‘active gardener’ member you will be contacted when we are ready to plant. We are still developing our website, but hope to have it up and running in the not too distant future. Our first AGM is planned for the evening of Monday 11th November. Members will receive further details nearer the time, but meantime please keep the date clear if you possibly can as we need a good turnout to have a quorum. Many thanks to everyone for your support and encouragement. Membership and standing order forms can still be returned. For more information or to offer help, please contact Peter (01505 872448) or Diane (01505 872611).

schools news Bishopton Primary School Garden make over Pupils and parents of Bishopton Primary school, took a little time a the weekend to get involved with a make over of the school vegetable plot and secret garden. Both areas unfortunately had become overgrown and full of nettles, weeds, and unfortunately people using the veg plot to walk their dogs!
St Columba Church Playgroup & Toddlers Would you trust these two doctors if you were ill? Perhaps not, but dressing up is great fun! Who will you be today; a doctor, princess, fairy, soldier or perhaps Spiderman? The possibilities are endless when the dressing-up comes out at Playgroup and the high-heeled shoes always a favourite too. Great opportunities to develop feelings of choice and independence plus language and selfdressing skills. We have a great variety of resources at Playgroup which are changed on a daily basis so something for everyone and the older children are currently being wonderful role-models for the younger new ones. We have just been successful in an application for a grant through the Big Lottery which will be used to bring in external play specialists for song, dance and gymnastics sessions, we have been lucky enough to do this in the past and the children have loved it. Thanks to everyone who came along and supported and donated goods and baking to our Nearly New Sale at the end of August. It was a great success raising much needed funds for the group so we hope to make this a regular event on our calendar. Our annual Christmas Craft Fair will be held on Saturday 16th November so keep the date free as we have lots of stall booked, perfect for starting the Christmas shopping!
Houston Primary School Parent workshops for parents in each stage of the school took place and were very well attended. Clyde Murshiel Rangers visited Primary 4 in August. Primary 4 are studying minibeasts and went on a minibeast hunt around the school grounds. They used classification keys, magnifying glasses and scoopers. Minibeasts are very fragile and must be handled very carefully. No minibeasts were hurt on this expedition. Primary 1 are settling into school life and are working hard. They are enjoying and embracing the new challenges which school brings. Visitors to our assembly this month included Katie Reid and Dr George McPhee who talked about Paisley Abbey Choir, our chaplin Rev Donald Campbell who very appropriately talked about celebrating skills and talents and pastor Andy from Quarriers entertained everyone with a great puppet show, music and a bible story. The school and Nursery class are once again celebrating our renewed accreditation for Fair Trade status.

A small band of pupils and parents & staff, who wanted to make a difference got together and cleared all the debris away and its now once again a usable garden. Next up the school eco committee will arrange for bulbs to be planted to have a lovely display in spring, both in the secret garden and in the plots. In spring the area for the veg garden will be ‘turned over’ and the pupils will create their own allotments for each year group, as well as a Bug garden, designed to attract lady birds and butterflies. Well done and thank you to the people who wanted to make the difference!
A Scottish Day Of Red, White & Blue For Schools The charities of the three armed forces are calling upon Scotland’s schools to sign up to ‘Red, White and Blue Day 2013’, a campaign to raise awareness about the difficulties faced by service children and families. Scheduled for Friday 11th October 2013, RWB13 is an opportunity for schoolchildren to donate £1 each in order to wear the British colours of red, white and blue, and for schools to run activities to further pupils’ understanding of what it means to be the child of a serving member of the British Armed Forces. RWB13 is an annual national campaign run by the three official Service charities and supported by the three Services themselves. It will highlight the difficulties and instability faced by the children who are left behind when one, or both, parents serving in Her Majesty’s Armed Forces is away on operations or based abroad. Gryffe High School First Year Settle in Well (Photo – Miss A Iafrate)
It seems wrong to describe the S1 pupils as ‘new’. They have settled in so well! As you can see from the photograph they are certainly well engaged and keen to learn. They seem to be enthusiastic and look very smart in their uniforms. The ease of transition has been helped by the long induction period in June. This year the S1 pupils spent almost a week at Gryffe getting to know their way around the school and following their August timetable.

“Trim Trail” – Grand Opening
We celebrated the official opening of the new “Trim Trails” in the playground. Pupils enjoyed watching the visiting Local Councillors trying out the new equipment and swinging on the monkey bars! Amelie Drummond P1, cut the infant Trim Trail ribbon, and Marcus Cole P7 cut the ribbon for the seniors. Harry Pittaway P7 said, “It’s amazing, I like the challenge.” Esther Walker P1 said, “I like everything!” Gardening Club Success Kilbarchan Primary Gardening Club won 3rd place in the Bridge of Weir gardening competition with the fantastic marrow they grew. The marrow weighed in at 2.1kg and took 2 months to grow! There were over 100 entries for the competition. Club members include – Anna Lyons, Cameron Payne, Eleanor Lambert, Abbie Bone, Nathan Cowgill, Nicola Martin and Alasdair Armour. The Club is run by Alastair’s mum, Mrs. Armour. The pupils from P5 all enjoyed planting the marrow and watching it grow! Zoo Lab Visit The pupils of P1 and P2/1 enjoyed a visit from the Zoo Lab. The animals included snakes, spiders, rats and snails. Lewis Moore said, “I thought the snails were slimey.” Owen Miller said, “My favourite part was when the rats were climbing up the keeper’s arm!” All the boys and girls really enjoyed the visit from Zoo Lab and also learned a lot about animals.
St Benedict’s High School Erskine Writers Schools’ Short Story Competition
The Albert Hammond Award – St Benedict’s High School Winners In August of last year Joan Pretorius - Lougheed, President of Erskine Writers, wrote to all Headteachers in Renfrewshire with details of entry to the Albert Hammond Award. Pupils were invited to submit a short story of 750 words, the theme of which, was A Modern Take on an Old Fairytale or Folk Legend. In May 2013 the results of the competition placed third year pupils Holly Russell in 1st place, Calum Bastaple in 2nd place and Moya Barclay in 3rd place. Also highly commended were Abaigh Barlow and Laura McMahon. St Benedict’s is justifiably proud of their achievements. The adjudicator, Rosemary Gemmell, who is a competition winner and a published author of stories for both adults and children, commented that she was impressed by the originality of the entries and the imagination of the students. Congratulations to all winners and thank you to Erskine Writers for offering this opportunity to all our young people. Abbey Nursery Things are very much back into a routine at Abbey Nursery now with children in the Grasshoppers playroom embarking on new topics including Discovering Animals; Under the Sea and Cat in the Hat and their sponge minds are absorbing all sorts of new information on a daily basis. Extending their learning within the wider community is a key part of our focus and it is always fun to take the children on visits to open up the discussion. In particular they always enjoy the bus rides and had fun looking at all the animals and care needs at Pets @ Home. The Busy Bunnies have also been following Under the Sea and exploring starfish, taking part in shell printing and have particularly enjoyed learning about sharks. The children also shared a special birthday treat recently when Madison’s parents prepared a traditional Filipino meal for the children to share and it was so successful we are planning to add some of these dishes to our nursery menu in the future. The Little Ladybirds is very lively at the moment with a lot of new, younger babies so there are lots of soft play activities as well as singing and messy play to keep the children busy all day. Should parents be looking for a nursery place we currently have a waiting list for the next few months and would advise you to contact us now if looking for a January space.
Kilmacolm Nursery Class
We are well into the session now and all the new children have settled in really quickly. It is amazing how independent they are nowadays and this allows us to get down to business as quickly as possible! We have already enjoyed a Teddy Bears’ Picnic as part of our first theme and collected a donation for charity to boot. During the brilliant summer weather our vegetable garden flourished and we harvested a fabulous crop of potatoes, peas and turnips to name but a few. Our success continued at the Kilmacolm Flower Show where we picked up a first ticket for our peas and a second for our turnips. Anna McMinn also gained a prize in the Picture Gallery. Primary 7 have erected the Discovery Dome and made a brilliant job of it! The Dome is made up of wooden poles, plastic discs and covered with strong material. This tent like structure can be placed outside but we were worried that it might not survive our weather and since we had space it is place indoors. The dome has lots of interesting bags which are attached inside and file on all the activities you can participate in.

Duchal Nursery School After the long summer break it was wonderful to welcome all the boys and girls to the nursery, especially the new children just starting on their nursery adventure. The big Blue Teddies are enjoying looking after the Red Teddies and showing them around. We have been learning all about colour and senses with the help of the Mr Men and Little Miss characters, the children have had lots of fun creating Mr Happy and Little Miss Sunshine who are now up on the nursery walls. The children have been out and about doing the crocodile walk around Birkmyre Park and flying on our new aeroplane in the Duchal garden, it is wonderful to have such great facilities that we can make the most of when the weather permits!! An Open Day is being held at the nursery on Saturday 2nd November from 10.00am – 12.00pm – anyone with young children is welcome to look round the nursery and meet current parents and the teachers. It is an excellent opportunity for anyone interested in Duchal to visit the nursery and see the wonderful things that we offer. We are always happy for you to come and visit the Nursery at any time so please contact Head Teacher Jean McCarthy on: Tel. 874358 to arrange a convenient date. Also visit our website at: www.duchal.com to keep up to date with all the latest news.

Langbank Playgroup Getting creative is great fun and very relaxing at the same time (plus you might not be allowed to get this messy at home!). Langbank Playgroup is a wonderful place to come and play and make friends. We have a hectic schedule of free play, snack and adult-led activities each Friday morning with gymnastics from Christine, outdoor play and visits from school too so always something to look forward to. We create many opportunities for the children to gain in confidence and practise their social skills plus become a little bit more independent at the same time. Why not pop in for a visit any Friday morning or contact our Chair, Jacqueline, on 01475 540728 for more information. We will be doing a Ragbag collection on 9th October, so please gather up all those unwanted textiles!

St Columba’s School News Laura Nominated for Diana Award
We are delighted to hear that Laura Watson (SVI) has been nominated for the Diana Courageous Citizen category. Laura has worked very hard to raise money for the charity 500 miles, which helps people with mobility problems. The award assessors said that they “were really impressed and particularly thought that the nominee demonstrated exceptional personal qualities.”
Scottish Triathlon Team Sarah Bradford (SIV) represented Scotland as part of the national foundation squad in an elite triathlon youth race against athletes from around the world. Iona Miller (SIII) was selected for the Scottish Triathlon Team to race in the1314 age group at the Inter Regional Triathlon Championships on the same day. Katrina Miller (SI) was reserve for the 12-13 age group. Scotland came 5th out of 12 regions which is their best result for several years. Both races were held at Eton Dorney, Windsor, with the swim in the lake where the rowing was held for the Olympics
Creative Communities Junior 6 pupils worked with writer Kirstin Zhang and artist Tori Gray to produce haiku and block prints to mark Year of Natural Scotland. Please visit the School website for more information www.st-columbas.org
Corseford School Everyone at Corseford School wishes to thank Waitrose in Newton Mearns for a cheque of £243. The money was raised by Waitrose Community Program. It was wonderful news when we were told that we were selected and we all had huge smiles on our faces. We are very grateful and will enjoy spending the money on upgrading the Robo Room. We recently had a fantastic 2 week summer play scheme for 20 children at the school. We had a wonderful time doing lots of fun activities and we had lots of days out including trips on a barge, bowling, golf, speedboats and bikes. We also had fun in the school using the fantastic facilities available including the hydro therapy pool, the Rebound trampoline, the sensory room and our Magic Carpet. The children had the chance to come together with their friends and enjoyed spending time together having fun. I think though the overwhelming favourite was our day at Castle Semple in Lochwinnoch where we used the speedboats and bikes. We would like to wish 3 students in Senior 2 “good luck”. They are starting College placements as part of their transition year at Corseford. We would like to welcome new members to our wonderful Team here at Corseford: Angela Scott our new teacher in the Primary Department and Lauren Miller who is our new Sports Coach. Lauren will be with us every Monday and the pupils are looking forward to trying her exciting ideas.

Kilmacolm Primary
We have had a busy start to our new session where we welcomed 32 children into our P.1 classes. We wish them every success as they begin their school career. We have been busy already, involved in a variety of events: Primary 7 took part in a Festival of Sport to raise awareness of the Commonwealth Games. We held an Eco focus Day where every class learned about environmental issues including recycling, litter, energy conservation and biodiversity. This tied in with our participation in Kilmacolm Horticultural Show where we entered vegetables grown by the nursery and flower pictures for the gallery. Our winners were as follows: Nursery & P.1 Anna McMinn, P.2, 3, & 4 Lilianna McWhinnie, P.5, 6 & 7 Molly Rose We welcomed Badger the Mystical Mutt to school for P.1-3 who were entertained by his adventures from his new book. P.4 visited Lunderston Bay to study the seashore and although the weather was quite wet they thoroughly enjoyed learning about this environment and the creatures that live in it. We also celebrated Dahlicious Day by focusing on literacy, particularly Roald Dahl books and stories. The boys and girls dressed up as their favourite character and as well as enjoying and learning about story writing they also raised funds for Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Children’s Charity. The imaginative and colourful costumes certainly brightened up our day! Next we look forward to our Bring and Buy/Fair Trade coffee morning in aid of McMillan Cancer Care. Our P.6 class are also looking forward to a short residential trip to Ardentinny Outdoor Centre where they will participate in a range of exciting activities. We will hear about their adventures on their return. School closes on Friday 11th October and pupils return on Tuesday 22nd October.

Bridge of Weir Primary School
At Bridge of Weir Primary we are thrilled to begin this new term as a Fairtrade School and with our third “Eco Schools” green flag flying in the playground. Huge thanks to all the dedicated pupils and staff involved in the Fairtrade and Eco Committees for all their highly effective contributions and hard work. After a glorious summer, a sunny, autumnal week heralded the start of a new school year, as we welcomed old and new pupils alike, including a bright-eyed clutch of new Primary 1s. Each of our year groups has embarked on exciting new topics. Our Primary 2 pupils are discovering the creative world of the Celts, which will see them constructing their own roundhouse and trying their hands at making Celtic pots and jewellery. Primary 3/2 are investigating the Seashore with a focus on research skills while our Primary 3s are finding out what the Egyptians put in their clay pots. Primary 4 pupils are working out how to decipher the runic script and legends of the Vikings. Primary 5 everyone is looking forward to a trip to Stirling Castle, to set in context their work on the Scottish Wars of Independence. Pupils in P6 are learning about the trials and tribulations of another famous resident of Stirling Castle – Mary, Queen of Scots – and will take a trip to her birthplace, Linlithgow Palace. Our new Primary 1s are embarking on that wonderful stage of decoding squiggles on a page that will see them soon proudly taking home their first reading books. Their “We’re Going on a Bear Hunt” topic on different animal habitats has seen them using their senses and imaginations in “The Enchanted Forest”, our outside classroom. All three classes took part in outdoor workshops led by Starling Learning and even heavy rain didn’t dampen their enthusiasm! Meanwhile, our top year group, resplendent in their new P7 ties, are elbow-deep in ration books and gas masks as they consider WWII: the home front. With one eye on secondary school, transition visits from Gryffe High School are already forming part of their timetable. This month we are delighted to celebrate the individual successes of three keen cyclists. Two of our Primary 7s, Roan Steel and Cameron Hunter, cycled the 47-mile Glasgow to Edinburgh Pedal for Scotland bike challenge ride on 7th September. Meanwhile, Primary 3 pupil Isla McCutcheon, a member of Johnstone Jets, won a Bronze medal in August at the Scottish National Championships in Edinburgh, and went on to receive a Yellow Jersey for winning two of a four-race series at the West of Scotland Cycling Association’s 6th September event in Glasgow. She can be seen here with Scotland’s own Olympic cyclist Chris Hoy. Well done everyone!
Woodlands Nursery OSC unit The children have been playing outside in our outdoor play area, they have been holding their own football tournaments and hula hoop competitions, with staff joining in too, although we have found the younger you are the better you are at hula hooping. We have also had our annual inspection and are very pleased to say that we were rated 5 (very good) in areas for parent and children involvement which we are very pleased with. The inspectors observed the children interacting with staff and each other and commented on what good relationships we have at Woodlands. We have also introduced a buddy system where our older children have been supporting the younger children with daily tasks which are new to them. This has gone very well and has given great confidence to both the older and younger child.

Strawberry Field Nursery Now we are into the new school term we will have a very busy year learning new experiences. We are currently enjoying our topic based on the story ‘’The Gruaffalo’’. We have been outside looking at all the different animal footprints and climbing and exploring on the trees. We also found a fox’s house on our travels. We made a yummy gruaffalo cake and had fun measuring and mixing our ingredients. Our teacher Lesley Anne has been learning the children about the different parts of the body through a variety of activities such as games, books and songs. Nursery staff ensured that children going to school had a happy and settled transition when they helped settle them in their first two days at school.
Kilbarchan Community Nursery
We are now into our Autumn term and learning all about animals and senses. Zoolab came to visit in September and brought a spider, snakes, beetles, rats and a tree frog so that the children could learn about how animals use their senses. Ollie said that the rat’s fur felt ‘like cotton wool.’ Our Bottle greenhouse, made with recycled plastic bottles collected by parents has now been built in the garden by TVC (The conservation volunteers) along with children and parent helpers. Now the children are looking forward to growing, strawberries, cucumbers and flowers. We would like to say a big thank you to BAA – who recently awarded us a generous donation from their Flight path fund, which meant that we were able to purchase two new computers to update the nursery’s IT system. For information about the nursery, please contact us by Phone on 01505 704839, email – enquiries@kilbarchancommunitynursery.org.uk
NURSERY While down at the nursery the baby room have been very busy settling in new friends and learning “All about Me” , creating wonderful pictures and displays. Our dance teacher from “The Song and Dance Factory” is back and Brogan has been getting to know all the new children who have been showing her that they have great rhythm and love to move. Our babies have also been loving balloon play, enjoying rolling, throwing and hitting the balloons. Our teacher Lesley Anne is also back with us within the Rising Fives Unit and her focus for this term is numeracy. Children have been enjoying activities relating to number such as hop scotch, dominoes, number snap and lots more. The rising Fives children are also now enjoying doing Library each week and are loving our new selection of books from which they can choose. Within our tweenie room we are learning about bathing babies and changing nappies using the dolls as we have lots of new baby brothers and sisters who have just arrived or are just about to arrive. We have also been looking at real maps of Houston and surrounding areas to support children in identifying where they live and local attractions such as Houston Park, Schools, Library and even the doctors surgery, etc.

sports news Connor selected Scotland U19’s KO Sainsbury for Scotland Schools Games Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash Club member Connor Thomson (12) was thrilled, not only to be selected to play for Scotland, but to be part of the winning team in the annual Home Nations Tennis Championship which was held at the Cardiff Lawn Tennis Club on the 7th & 8th September. The team consisted of three age groups 18 & u, 14 & u and Connor’s category 12 & under with 2 boys & 2 girls being selected for each. Connor, along with Jacob Fearnley, Eve Lumsden & Maia Montgomerie, represented the 12 & under team. They narrowly lost to Ireland, but beat the Welsh hosts to finish as runners up in their category. All four players who were playing for their country for the first time recorded wins throughout the weekend. Scotland won overall by the narrowest of margins retaining the title which they had won as hosts in Glasgow in 2012. Strathgryffe has just launched its new coaching programmes for both tennis & squash. Please email: info@strathgryffe.net for more information or tel: 01505 615100.
Scotland’s U19 girl’s 7’s team led the way in the opening ceremony of the Sainsbury’s’ Schools games in Sheffield on Thursday evening in front of a capacity crown in the Don Valley stadium. The competition proper started on Saturday morning with a hard fought game against previous gold medal winners Wales Dragons. Despite a poor start, Scotland were defiant throughout the first day of the tournament scoring tries in all of their games and running England Midlands to a very narrow defeat. Sainsbury’s have put a huge effort into providing an Olympian atmosphere to the whole competition, from the individual en-suite rooms, to the huge number of British stars from the 2012 Olympics who are acting as mentors to competitors at these games. Birkmyre and Gryffe HS player Louise McMillan has had her first outing in Scotland colours today and is seen here breaking through the Irish defence to setup their first try. Although they did not win any of their four games they have high hopes for the Bowl competition on Sunday as they face two of the weakest teams and an England region that they came within a few points of beating on Saturday. Birkmyre Girls have page on Facebook and welcome any girls from P7 up who want to have some fun on a Sunday afternoon, look them up!!
Kilbarchan Athletic Club Interested in taking up jogging/ running? Why don’t you come and join us, we meet Monday and Thursday Nights 7pm at On-X. Linwood. We cater for all abilities. For more information phone 07941 686990
Castle Semple Sailing Club The last of the Club’s trophy races for the season took place on Sunday 19th August, when we were still in the midst of our wonderful summer. We only managed four out of our planned five races due to the weather. Nine boats entered in eager anticipation of five races, but by race four only 5 remained. The rest retiring due to exhaustion or subaqua activities. Many congratulations to the joint winners - namely Graeme Hall and Angus Winchester - well deserved wins.

Karting Blog by Tom Thickpenny Four friends and I enjoyed a fantastic weekend at Teesside Karting’s British 24 Hour Race which supports Help for Heroes. As Team Titanium we were one of 73 Teams divided into four twin-engine kart classes Our competitors included two teams of Heroes (very inspirational) and two Solo 24 Hourers raising funds for Help for Heroes and MacMillan Cancer Support respectively (hats off to you guys). During qualifying we noticed one of our engines wasn’t pulling properly. A blocked filter was diagnosed and fixed, but towards the end of the race this problem re-occurred – but not problematic enough to warrant losing 20 minutes sorting it! In the wet we were ballistic… 3rd fastest on track!...and there was some wet! The race was halted around 11pm for two hours due to the rain percolating the timing system plus some serious puddles. However the lack of power at the end of the straight due to our faulty engine – and some human error! – brought us home 8th in class and 25th overall. Never mind – the experience was just brilliant. The on-track photo was taken by my team-mate Glen Fraser (left in Team photo) whose off-track hobby is GFC Kart Photography. I’ve just been testing in a KGP Tonykart with my new Team TSR Racing and make my debut for them at the Super One National Series round at PFI kart circuit, Lincolnshire (September 20th – 22nd) after which I’ll be preparing for the KGP World Finals in Castelletto, Italy (luckily during my October half term!). Renfrewshire Junior Order Of Merit Winners
Dramatic Finish To Renfrewshire Golf Season
The final event of the season for Renfrewshire Golf Union is the Herbie Pirie Trophy hosted by Renfrew Golf Club. It is the last chance for Order of Merit points and this, in addition to the prestige of the event, ensures that the field includes the top performers in the Order of Merit table. After the morning round, the leader was Caldwell’s Paul Alexander with a four under par round of 68. His nearest rival was Grant Beaton of Bonnyton with 70 with Ryan Mackenzie (Erskine) and Sam Binning (Ranfurly Castle) both well in contention with one under par rounds of 71. Grant held it together in the afternoon and his score of 73 gave him a total of 143, a score which was soon equalled as Sam Binning handed in a level par 72. With only one game to come in, both players started to prepare for a three hole playoff under the competition rules. However, out on the course, Central Scotland Seniors Champion, Ronnie Clark (Erskine), who had a 74 in the morning round was four under with only the tough final hole to play. Needing a par to win the competition outright, he was short of the green in two, but a chip to five feet and a single putt was sufficient to win by a single shot.
With only the Kilmacolm Junior Open left to play in the sixteen events which qualify for the Renfrewshire Golf Union’s Junior Order of Merit, it was a very close run contest with Sean Burns of Caldwell Golf Club having amassed 760 points and his nearest rival, Josh Beatt from Fereneze Golf Club, with 737.5 points. Both boys played well, but Sean’s score of 74 for third place was enough to ensure that he takes the 2013 award. Josh shot a respectable 77 and this meant that he held on to second place in the Order of Merit. Fourteen year old, Jack Currie (Greenock) was third. In the under 15 section, it was also very close. Old Ranfurly’s Jamie Stewart won his section of the Opens at Greenock, Renfrew and Fereneze and these points were enough to give him a 15 point lead at the end of the season from Aiden Wilson (Erskine). In third place was Jack Currie of Greenock. Pictures of Sean and Jamie
Sailing in for a game of golf The Club welcomed Jim & Carol Fitzgerald from Michigan Ohio. The couple who were on a European cruise visited Greenock on board the Emerald Princess and thanks to their tour operator’s recommendation played at Kilmacolm. This was a first cruise passenger visit to the Club and both were given a suitable memento to mark the occasion.
Before the event, Eastwood’s David Dickson had been leading the Order of Merit by 108 points and only Grant Beaton could catch him. Grant’s second equal spot earned him 235 points and, with David adding only 75 points for twelfth place, Grant took the Blake Clark Trophy and the winning cheque back to Bonnyton.

Lochwinnoch Jogging Buddies Running can boost our physical and mental health. Running in a group can help us to maintain a fitness regime and is also fun. Lochwinnoch Jogging Buddies are part of a pan Renfrewshire organisation working under the umbrella of Jog Scotland. We meet at 6.30pm every Tuesday at the Indoor Football building off Newton of Barr. The aim is to provide non competitive group running which is suitable for people of different abilities. We vary the length of runs, and also include speed work. As it is Lochwinnoch, runs include the occasional hill! All runs are led by jog-leaders who have attended a Jog Scotland training course, and are themselves enthusiastic runners. Beginners are always welcome; also if you have a particular goal such as a 10k race in mind we can assist in your build up. During the summer we make use of the glorious countryside around Lochwinnoch. During the dark evenings of winter we remain within the village. Running in a group provides added security at this time of year.
Rena Simpson Seniors Trophy: Winner Mrs Val Lawrence Sisters Megan and Eilidh Briggs have secured further International Honours in representing Scotland in the Home Internationals at Scotscraig. Eilidh is the current is the current leader of the Scottish Ladies Amateur Golf Order of Merit and is well ahead of her closest rival. Sister Megan is currently lying in 4th place. Matthew Clark won the 72 hole Sutherland Chalice at Dumfries & Galloway and also represented Scotland at the Home Internationals. He finished 4th in SGU Order of Merit.

Hayley’s Nutty Nine in Ten
Adrenalin junkie Hayley Douglas has decided to celebrate turning 30 in an unusual way. Starting on the 18th of August and ending on the 20th of October Hayley will be taking part in nine challenges in 10 weeks. She’s doing this nuttiness in order to raise funds for Teenage Cancer Trust. Hayley has sent us an update to let us know how she is getting on so far. ‘At the time of writing I have done three of my nutty challenges. On the 18th of August I joined 500 others outside the Riverside Museum in Glasgow for the Glasgow River Rat Race, a 10k wet n wild challenge on the Clyde. The challenge saw me running, kayaking and swimming along, on and in the Clyde before completing the final obstacle a jump off the Tall Ship into the River. It was a great race and the weather held however, I came down with “Clyde Belly” the next day which took a few days to get over. I was back on form a week later to tackle my second challenge the Tough Mudder at Dalkeith Country Estate. Tough Mudder is a 12 mile long course with obstacles such as the “Artic Enema” (a skip full of ice that you have to fully submerge in) and the “Electric Eel” (a 100m crawl where you get zapped by 10,000 volts of electricity). I’ve done this event before and wasn’t too nervous, but my running partner Stephen McLean was worried about the ice. It was a great event that saw us completing the course in just over 3 hours and that was despite me blacking out after getting an electric shock to the head.
Treating the Pain Some people are unaware that osteopaths don’t only treat the spine, but also treat pain and injuries felt in the peripheral joints.
I got a break for two weeks before tackling the third of my challenges, the Pedal for Scotland 47 mile challenge ride from Glasgow to Edinburgh which I cycled with my brother. The sun shone for us on the day, but I had no idea how hilly the course was going to be. I’m pretty sure I spent about 80% of the ride in second gear on my bike and the last 10 miles were particularly hard going. What impressed me was the number of kids doing the ride, so even when moral was starting to dip I managed to dig deep and make it to Murrayfield. Two days after the cycle my legs feel great and I’m gearing up for challenge number four, The Spartan Sprint, which might be the toughest yet… I let you know how I get on next time” If you would like to sponsor Hayley you can donate online at www. virginmoneygiving.com/Hayleysnutty9in10 or complete a sponsor form at the Brown Bull in Lochwinnoch.
Things we see regularly in the clinic are patients presenting with hip and knee pain. This can be caused by many things from a simple muscle or ligament strain after a trip or sports injury to osteoarthritis or a simple postural imbalance - all of which are amenable to treatment. Knee pain is often simple to treat and, unless there is internal damage to the joint (which your osteopath will diagnose and refer for further tests), often responds well to Osteopathic treatment. A common example is when the muscles of the hip start to tighten, causing the hip to rotate slightly outwards. This changes the way we use our knee when walking and can create strain through the inside of the knee and pain from the muscles and ligaments. Gentle work to stretch and rebalance the lower limb from the hip to the ankle will reduce the strain on the knee and can dramatically reduce symptoms. If you have any questions about your pain please don’t hesitate to call us on 0141 887 3734 and we will be happy to discuss your symptoms to determine if we think treatment will be effective.
