It feels like we’ve had a good share of rogues and scams already this year, and we’ve just been alerted to another - the Madrid inheritance letter, claiming the reader is set to inherit a small fortune. They seem to have just enough personal information to cause the reader to consider the letter as genuine. Fundraising Treasure Hunt After the success of our Ladies Night at the Races in February, Kirsty Gillanders, Liz Quinn and Lesley Finn organised a Family Car Treasure Hunt followed by Family Disco with Quiz on 1st June in aid of Yorkhill Childrens Charity.

20 cars set off from O’Brien’s car park in Houston kitted with Yorkhill balloons, searched for the clues around Houston, Bridge of Weir and completed tasks at RSPB and Castle Semple in Lochwinnoch, before finishing back at Houston Bowling Club for a fun-filled evening, including a fantastic hot buffet meal supplied by Denny at Sorelle in Bridge of Weir. There were a lot of laughs, a few potential divorces, several near misses in the cars, a few cheaters, a couple of detours, lots of dancing and a cartwheel competition. Everyone had a great time and we raised just under £500 for the cause. Thanks to everyone who took part to make this another success!

Travel Blog

by Maureen Horton of Travel a la Carte

Wedding Bells in Italy This year, the most popular destination so far has been Italy. There is so much variety in this wonderful country to explore..... Cities and Culture, Coast and Countryside, Lakes and Mountains, all within a short distance from each other by road or rail. No matter where you choose to go you will find warm friendly service, wonderful food, wine, coffee and ice cream at very reasonable cost. At the end of May 14 of us from Bridge of Weir, plus a further 100 others, descended on the peaceful unsuspecting walled town of Orvieto to attend the wedding of a friend’s son. This charming Umbrian hill town is perched on a great volcanic plug 315 metres high and has a fortress type appearance. It is situated midway between Rome and Florence - easily accessed by the highway close by or the intercity train. From the station a funicular transports you up to the town. Inside the walls there is a labyrinth of small alleys and streets leading to the main event, the Duomo. It was built in the 1300s and is unique in it’s finish of striped white travertine and black basalt. The wedding ceremony was movingly conducted in Italian and the whole day was a delightful and happy event, although the weather was more Scottish then Southern Italian. This did not dampen the joy of the day or impinge on the enthusiasm of the piper, who I am sure caused a stir among the local residents. As the weekend’s celebration came sadly to an end, we all scattered like swallows to explore different corners of the country. Some to Rome, some to Perugia and Assisi, some to Capri and Amalfi and us to Siena and San Gimignano, finally migrating back to Bridge of Weir with lovely memories to reflect on.

The Glasgow 5k Run Saturday 27th July - Bellahouston Park. Start Time: 11am - Please arrive ready at 10.40am for the Big Warm Up. Visit www.bigfunrun.com to enter or for further information.

£4m extension of Glasgow Centre announced The Scottish SPCA has appealed for support from animal lovers in the West of Scotland after announcing ambitious £4 million plans to extend its Glasgow Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre. Known locally as the Glasgow Dog and Cat Home, the centre will be transformed over the next two years after planning permission was granted by Glasgow City Council last week. The extended centre will be able to care for up to 3,000 abused, abandoned and injured animals every year. Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said, “Sadly, the extremely high number of animals coming into our care has been stretching our resources to their absolute limit, which is why this massive investment is vital. “Our Glasgow centre is our largest and oldest in Scotland. This is the most ambitious building project we have ever undertaken and further demonstrates our determination to help animals in Scotland.” The Cardonald-based centre, which opened in 1908, cared for 1,967 animals last year. Once extended, it will house the only two-tiered kennel blocks in Scotland. Anyone wishing to donate to our appeal can call 0800 160 1758 or visit our appeal page at www.scottishspca.org/Glasgow

Paisley Abbey Bathed in Eternal Light Bearsden Choir’s final performance of the season was held in Paisley Abbey on 15th May, raising the sum of £600 in aid of Poppyscotland. It was a beautiful, evening so like the warm, sunny weather in western France in the spring of 1915. (Photo courtesy of Gordon R A Smith). Joined by Chorus Niagara they sang, Beethoven: Mass in C and Howard Goodall: Eternal Light – A Requiem. Many of the audience were familiar with the Beethoven Mass few, if any, had experienced the poignancy of Eternal Light. Goodall has woven the words of the Latin Mass with poetry to create, “a breathtakingly beautiful piece of music.“ Eternal Light reflects upon the agony and the emptiness which accompany the loss of a loved one and the desolation and despair that must be endured by those who are left to mourn The Dies Irae is sculpted from a poem written by John McCrae, in France, in May 1915, after he had presided over the funeral of a friend. “In Flanders fields the poppies blow, between the crosses row on row......... “ The choirs blended brilliantly and embraced their audience with an exceptionally moving performance of a choral work inspired, in part, by war and in part by a tiny crimson flower.

Eternal Light ends with the words, et lux perpetua luceat eis , - and let perpetual light shine upon them. As the final, plaintive syllable of eis was embraced by the Abbey as it faded to naught, we were all left to ponder................? Fully, ten seconds of stillness and silence followed. Surely, the most fitting testimonial to a truly heartfelt and inspired performance. Bearsden Choir opened season 2012 / 2013 with The Dream of Gerontius by Edward Elgar. In December, the Choir was delighted to welcome Kelvinside Academy Junior Choir to join in the festive celebrations. This concert also raised £850 for Save the Children. 2013 presented a completely new challenge. Bearsden recorded its first CD – a selection of choral favourites from Burns to Bruckner. A refreshing potpourri with something for everyone. Please do purchase a copy and help the choir to continue performing for your pleasure. Practices are a combination of learning and much hilarity. Performances are, quite simply – a delight !! If you would like to join Bearsden Choir please call: Gill Hamblen 07751 151799 or email: enquiries@ bearsdenchoir.co.uk www.bearsdenchoir.co.uk

Sma’ Shot Day

Sma Shot Day takes place on the first Saturday of July (6th). The day starts with a Procession setting off from the Dooslan Stane at Brodie Park, winding its way through the streets of Paisley before ending up at Abbey Close, where a fair is held. At the head of the procession is the Charlston D r u m m e r , pounding out the call to the Buddies of Paisley to follow the marchers. Following behind are effigies of the infamous Cork, local dignitaries

and banners from the old weaver villages of Paisley.

Airshow 2013! On Saturday 27th July from 10am to 5pm at the National Museum of Flight, East Fortune, East Lothian EH39 5LF. You can book tickets online at www.nms.ac.uk/our_museums/museum_of_ flight.aspx. You can also book by calling 0300 123 6789 or in person at any National Museums Scotland site. Join us for a fun-filled family day out. Enjoy activities on the ground and in the air, with activity workshops, demonstrations and hours of exciting aerial displays.

Sma’ Shot Day originates from the w e a v i n g industry, which, in the 19th century made Paisley and the surrounding area one of the major textile producing areas in the British Empire. The sma’ shot was a binding thread which held together the patterned shawls which Paisley is famous for. But, because the sma shot was never seen in the finished shawls the manufacturers refused to pay the weavers for the yarn. After many years of dispute, the weavers won their cause. In celebration the traditional July holiday was renamed Sma’ Shot Day and is celebrated on the first Saturday in July. The Sma Shot Cottages are now open to the public, every Wednesday and Saturday from 12 noon till 4pm - April to September. The volunteers are very friendly and helpful - many thanks on my recent visit. On Sma’ Shot Day a weavers’ march proceeds through Paisley. Starting from the Dooslan Stane in Brodie Park and ending at Abbey Close the march is led by a drummer with a replica of the Charleston Drum and features banners representing Ferguslie, Toonheid, Sandholes, Sneddon, Causeyside, Newtoun and Charleston. Also in the procession is the cork, an effigy of one of the contemptuous manufacturers, which is burned at the climax of the re-enactment of the Sma’ Shot Story. Kristine Olsen in Concert Kristina Olsen at Lochwinnoch - Monday 15th July. £17 - includes fixed menu meal.

Kristina Olsen is one of the most entertaining and compelling performers: a superb multi-instrumentalist (acoustic guitar, steel-body slide guitar, saxophone, concertina, mandolin and piano) as well as an award-winning songwriter with a big bluesy voice. Her mix of powerful songs range from sassy bottleneck blues to lilting ballads to swing jazz to raunch and roll (as well as her hilarious storytelling) makes for a diverse and satisfying musical experience. Review: “It is indeed a rare occurrence to be so completely captivated for an entire concert by one person and a guitar, but American singer/ songwriter Kristina Olsen certainly managed this and more, delivering a highly entertaining show. The audience loved it, demanding that Olsen return to the stage for three encores.” Christchurch Press, New Zealand. Venue: The Club House Restaurant, Lochwinnoch Golf Club, Burnfoot Road, Lochwinnoch, PA12 4AN For information or advance booking contact 07717 211057 or email houstonfolkclub@gmail.com Doors open 7.30pm. Fijian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) Local vet, Rosemary Leslie, is heading to Fiji this summer to volunteer with the Fijian Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA). Fiji is a beautiful country, composed of many islands, many, many miles away. At the moment, there are no permanent vets in the country, other than the two government vets who deal with large animals and the charity relies on volunteer vets from abroad who arrive sporadically, mainly from Australia, but there has been at least one from Bridge of Weir already!

Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre Looking for something to do that’s just a wee bit different these summer holidays? Then why not pay a visit to the Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre at Balloch. A fun day out for everyone, regardless of age. You will learn about the individual birds, see them close up, stand six feet from a Golden Eagle. Watch the birds training or flying in our aviary compound. Learn about our rescue facilities and success stories. Many say the atmosphere at the centre is unique, the character of each bird, and the obvious relationship between the birds and the owner. A place where you can escape the real world for a twenty minutes, or two hours. No one leaves disappointed. Loch Lomond Bird of Prey Centre is located to the rear of the Loch Lomond Homes & Garden Centre. Entry to the Bird of Prey Centre is accessed through the Garden Centre. The Garden Centre is situated on the A811, Stirling Road, 3/4 mile outside Balloch. Find out more at www.llbopc.co.uk or visit the LLBPC facebook page.

226_JULY13_14-19 WHAT'S ON.ind.indd 19

The SPCA run a shelter which can house 40 animals but since at least 8 lost or feral animals are presented each day, they are put to sleep in 24-48 hours if not claimed. While most Fijians are kind and loving towards their pets, 25% of Fiji’s population lives below the poverty line and many people simply cannot afford to feed their dogs let alone pay for spaying and neutering them. As a result, there are hundreds of dogs that end up starved, neglected, poisoned or injured and the local volunteer-run SPCA in Suva is overwhelmed with dogs in need. For only £10 you can sponsor one spay or neuter and be responsible for stopping the reproduction of potentially hundreds of unwanted puppies headed for a life of suffering & hardship. The SPCA relies on income from rehoming to pay for drugs. No vet means no neutering so no income. That is where you can make such a difference. I hope to raise enough to send essentials like antibiotics, anaesthetics, painkillers, wormers and anti-parasites. Please help. For further details, contact Rosemary Leslie at leslierosemary@yahoo. co.uk

business news iT blog

with Colin Fyfe of Colcom We recently had a big news debacle regarding online anonymity and the CIA and GCHQ’s efforts to track our every online foray. For me, policing the internet is a parent’s job and nobody else’s; although I have no problem at all with policing on the internet I don’t think the decisions, purchases or searches we make online should be monitored and recorded for surveillance or crime prevention purposes. Whether they actually are or not is another question, however monitoring our online behaviour now more than ever are the companies we buy from and whose emails we read. I was recently configuring an email newsletter for a client and was quite amazed at the level of insight the sender gets in to the recipients interaction with the email. If the email gets opened it is registered, if the recipient clicks on a link then that too is registered on the senders mailing software. This enables the company to target your interests more accurately. This seems quite benign and actually pretty helpful, but I wonder what the longer term trade-offs are and what other clandestine tricks it paves the way for. Incidentally, the online mailer service I was configuring, Mail Chimp, has recently redeveloped its front end and is very worth a (another) look if you

in business with Steve Povey

Stress is like an ice cream cone - you have to learn to lick it! An article I read recently said; “The struggle to balance work, family, and outside commitments has intensified in recent years.” While that’s hardly a surprise, as stress is a part of daily life, it is intensifying and we have to learn how to reduce it and manage it. Communication is often the big key to relieving stress in every area of life; you’ll know yourself how a lack of it just creates tension and stress. Talk things over with someone you trust “Don’t bottle it up,” says sociologist Ronald L. Pitzer, “Confide your feelings and worries to some level-headed person who is likely to understand and care.” Under stress at work? Well don’t suffer in silence; it only makes you feel more pressured. Experts recommend “Talking to your employer: if they don’t know there’s a problem, they can’t help.” In a business-like approach, aim to convince them that less job stress means more productivity!

226_JULY13_20-23 BUSINESS NEWS.ind.indd 20

are looking to do a mailing list. One tool in the fight for online anonymity is the ‘Tor browser’. It is worth looking at their site to get a handle on why anonymity is important and what you can do to outwit Big Corp and maybe Big Gov too.

And you do need some ‘me time’. A proverb says “Better is a handful of rest than a double handful of hard work and striving after the wind.” In other words, setting aside some time for you can do wonders—just a few minutes to enjoy a cup of tea, read, or meditate in peace. A book on parenting said: “When you spend some of your valuable time and energy on yourself, you are, in essence, filling your personal-resource bank. Constantly giving means that you’ve got to be sure there’s something going back in, or you’ll risk becoming emotionally short-changed, if not bankrupt.” Great advice. Stress though is a huge area to cover and is one I work on with the Dental profession – oh boy are they stressed! So I could write all day about this, but Rona won’t let me so let’s end here with 11 good steps we can all take until we revisit this at another time; 1.Get sufficient rest every day; 2.Maintain a good diet. Avoid overeating; 3.Engage in proper and regular exercise, such as walking; 4.If you’re worried, talk to a friend; 5.Spend more time enjoying your family; 6.Delegate more tasks; 7.Know your own physical and emotional limitations; 8.Set realistic goals; do not be a perfectionist; 9.Be organized; have a balanced schedule; 10.Cultivate stress relieving qualities such as mildness and patience; 11.Set aside some time for yourself. So remember, “Don’t take life too seriously – you’ll never get out of it alive” (If you would like some advice on how to improve the effectiveness of your skills, contact Steve on 07949 197658 or steve@developmentpartners. co.uk (Next month the power of video.)

local History by Renfrewshire Local History Forum

Day Conference Celebrating 850 Years of Paisley Abbey Saturday 7th September Paisley Abbey 850 Conference, organised jointly by the Abbey and Renfrewshire Local History Forum, will be held in Paisley Abbey on Saturday 7th September. The conference is one of the final events in the year-long series of activities to celebrate the 850th anniversary of the founding of the Abbey. The foundation Charter was signed in 1163 at Fotheringay, Northamptonshire, to allow Walter Fitzalan, Steward of Scotland, to establish a Priory at Paisley. Thirteen monks came from the Cluniac Priory at Much Wenlock in Shropshire to establish the priory at Paisley. In 1219 the priory was raised to the status of Abbey by the Pope. The morning session of the conference will concentrate on the period up to the seventeenth century and the afternoon session from the eighteenth century onwards. Under the chairmanship of Derek Alexander of the National Trust for Scotland, a prestigious team of speakers will cover a wide range of topics relevant to the Abbey, the town of Paisley and beyond. The morning session will open with Gilbert Márkus of the University of Glasgow speaking on Paisley, the Stewarts and the use of Saints. He will

be followed by Professor Richard Oram of the University of Stirling whose topic covers the Abbey, its estates and the changing face of the land. Next, local Paisley historian, Alan Steel, will speak on the Abbey’s patrons, trouble makers and angry abbots. The morning session will conclude with Tom Addyman of Simpson and Brown introducing a new investigation and analysis of the archaeology of the Cloister and the Place of Paisley. After lunch, the afternoon session will be opened by Professor Charles McKean of the University of Dundee speaking on the modernization of Paisley, with reference to the use of the Abbey lands and the formation of the new town between 1750 and 1820. The next speaker, David Roberts, formerly Keeper of the Archives at Paisley Museum, will discuss the life and times of the Reverend Patrick Brewster. Patrick Brewster was appointed minister to the second charge of Paisley Abbey in 1818. The question is - was he a charismatic people’s champion or a bigoted, self-important windbag? The conference will conclude with the Reverend Tom Davidson Kelly speaking on the Scots architect, Macgregor Chalmers and the 20th century choir restoration. The Paisley Abbey 850 Conference, with its prestigious team of speakers and the introduction of some little known aspects of the Abbey’s history, is a fitting event in the yearlong celebration of the founding of the Abbey. Application forms for the conference can be found at www.paisleyabbey. org.uk or www.rlhf.info

The Gryffe Camera Club Time to charge the battery and put the memory card into your camera! We attract most of our new members over the summer when people who would like to find out what a camera club is like, find a few hours to come along to one of our summer ‘open’ evenings. They meet like-minded people who have fun learning on how to get more from their cameras and also visit interesting places. We meet in the rear car park of the Carrick Centre, (Main Street, Houston, Renfrewshire, PA6 7AS) and set off, car sharing where possible.

The latest Ernst and Young Attractiveness survey has found that inward investment in Scotland is at a 15 year high. The 2013 survey describes the performance as “sparkling”, with Scotland attracting 49% more projects in 2012 than in 2011. 76 projects were recorded last year – the highest figure since 1997. Scotland’s success at securing inward investment is clear and as this welcome report states ‘There is no sign of investors being deterred from coming to Scotland; if anything, the reverse appears to be true’.

Hopefully we will have some good light, but remember you also get some great shots when the weather is perhaps not at its best! Go on – try us one Wednesday evening! 3rd July (sunset Portencross

I have always said the debate about Scotland’s future could be a positive one. Renfrewshire has a strong record of attracting and maintaining key new business operations and I recently met with Tom Johnston, President of the Renfrewshire Chamber of Commerce, to discuss future plans.

In my role as Planning Minister I visited Loch Lomond National Park and Glasgow International Airport to discuss proposed plans to enhance the sites under Scotland’s third National Planning Framework (NPF3) which I lead. That shows the balance to strike between environment and economic growth. The new policies will influence development plans across Scotland and guide future planning decisions on a range of sectors including transport, energy and infrastructure. Town centre policies will also be strengthened, good news for Renfrewshire. The airport visit included sight of plans for refurbishment and extension to terminal buildings, additional aircraft stands and taxiways as well as improvements to surface transport access. I was also very pleased to hear that Passenger growth at Glasgow Airport has continued with almost 665,000 people travelling through the airport in May 2013, representing an increase of just under 1% compared to the same period last year. At Loch Lomond National Park, I visited the site of the Ben Arthur resort at Arrochar which is due for competition in 2015.

As part of the planning conditions for the former ROF site in Bishopton there was a commitment to for funding towards sports, recreation and play facilities. I was pleased to recently meet with a number of local people who are looking into possible options for sports facilities in Bishopton. I plan to conduct a survey to gather the views of local residents in the near future to assist with moving this forward.

School Visits I was very pleased to attend St Fillan’s Primary School to round off my school visits for this academic year. I have been very lucky in having the opportunity to meet staff and pupils in many of the schools in the Renfrewshire North and West constituency over the past year. I see education as a responsibility of my position as an MSP and I feel these visits produced an educational experience for both me and the students.

Youth Employment Initiative Launched in Inverclyde A programme to encourage local employers to create jobs for local young people has been launched in Inverclyde – with almost £550,000 available. The Employer Plus Wage Subsidy is part of the Youth Employment Scotland project funded by the Scottish Government and the European Social Fund (ESF). The programme is open to young people who live in Inverclyde aged 18-24 years and who have been unwaged or unemployed for less than six months. Funding is available to pay half of the national minimum wage for the age of the young person employed, payable for up to a maximum of 26 weeks. Jobs must be for a minimum of 25 hours per week and no more than 40 hours per week. Jobs must be for a period of 26 weeks or more, be additional to the existing workforce and must not replace positions that would otherwise be filled. Jobs cannot be filled before the formal authorisation of the wage subsidy. To take part in the programme employers should contact the EEP Team on 01475 553344 or email info@employerplus.org

village news bishopton, langbank & bridge of weir Bishopton Development the way ahead for the Community Now that the Development on the BAE site next to the Village is underway and has ‘actual’ rather than ‘hypothetical’ houses on it considerable interest has been generated and as a Community we must move forward and embrace and influence what happens both on the new site and in the existing Community. A ‘Community Briefing Night’ was held on Monday 10th June in the Community Centre where all the groups who have evolved from the ‘Section 75 Group’ reported on their activities and tried to give a better understanding of what the Development involves and how individuals can contribute and become involved. We are required as a ‘Community’ to set up a trust to manage the funds that the Development brings to the village and work has already been done with ‘Engage Renfrewshire’, ‘Development Trusts Association Scotland’, ‘Planning Aid Scotland’, ‘Sports Scotland’ and a range of other organisations to allow the Community to make the best of this opportunity. As a Community Council we regularly hear the cry that ‘we do not know what is happening’ so here is your opportunity to find out from, those who have already done a bit of digging, what is happening now and what possibly should be our aspirations for the future. Taylor Wimpey one of the House builders on the site also met with the Community Council in the School on the 3rd June to let us know how they are progressing and answer Questions from the Community as a whole.

Hearing Aid Centre - The Bridge Personnel are at The Bridge from 1pm to 2pm on the third Friday of every month for the issue of hearing aid batteries and hearing aid checks.

Langbank Parish Church Invitation From Sunday 25th August, there will be changes in the activities for children of all ages. We are all very excited and looking forward to welcoming any children that would like to come along and join the Sunday Club! For the babies and pre school children there will be a Crèche with lots of new toys, games and activities. The Primary School Children have planned activities including arts and crafts, music, drama and games. The Welcomers are for older children and they carry out a range of projects. They recently held a successful Sale to raise money for the Malaria Programme. We have an enthusiastic group of adults ready to engage with the children. The Church service starts at 10am and you can come along and meet in the Hall from 9.50am.

Proof that crossing fingers works? What a glorious day it was for this year’s Gala Day! It must be at least partly due to all the crossed fingers that could be seen throughout Bridge of Weir in the build up to the event. This year, Brighter Bridge of Weir had two stalls, one for the now traditional strawberries and cream, and another dedicated to Tam Tattie-Bogle and his new missus, Bessie, another fundraising enterprise for the group’s efforts to brighten up the village. Thanks to Beaton Brothers for the strawberries and Alice Johnstone for Bessie. Speaking of fund raising efforts, the group secured a grant award from Renfrewshire Council for this financial year. Thanks to local councillors for their help and support. Regular readers may recall that prior to Gala Day, Brighter Bridge of Weir volunteers spent two weekends cleaning up the village. The copy deadline for June’s issue of the Advertizer fell between the two, but we can report a successful conclusion. The volunteers were provided with snacks and soft drinks courtesy of the Co-op Food store, and teas and coffees were spontaneously provided by Anderson’s Bakery, Bernie’s Deli and Lochnagar Cafe. As to the group’s everyday work, the daffodil display in Main Street was late this year due to the spring(?!) weather, but they certainly brightened things up when they did eventually burst forth. They’ve since gone, you may have noticed, and the planters and barrier baskets are now sporting a variety of summer bedding plants. Over the next couple of months they should develop into a gorgeous display of colour. Roll on August (but not too quickly).

The Local Area Committee had their first meeting of the new financial year when I was pleased to secure an extra £1000 for Brighter Bridge of Weir. They are doing an amazing job in the village. Donaldfield Estate in Bridge of Weir, that’s St Andrews Drive and roads around it, is suffering some neglect. The pavement on Clevans Road leading to the estate requires upgrading, steps are dangerous, white lining is non-existent, roads need adopting, etc. I am looking for some help and if anyone would like to form a residents association then please get in touch. I am disappointed tthat the proposal of The Planning & Property Policy Board is that the committee agree that no modifications are made to the Local Development Plan. From here the proposals for the LDP will be submitted to Scottish Ministers. From July 2013 to March 2014 an independent reporter from the Scottish Government will examine the LDP. Then in April 2014, the LDP will be adopted.

Bridge of Weir Gala Day Window Competition: A clear winner was New Vision once again, but thanks also to the Co-op supermarket, St Vincent’s Hospice, Serendipity, LEAP, Bernie’s Deli-cafe, Kerr’s Vets and Ailsa Hairdresser. An enjoyable Gala Week service was held in St Machars Ranfurly church at which the Gala Queen read very well. Traffic calming on Lintwhite Crescent: the scheme has been added to the Council’s ‘wish list’ and should it become a definite proposal we can look at possible funding in the future. The expected results of Driver Feedback speed monitoring signs, installed on Kilmacolm Road, Bridge of Weir and also Main Street, Langbank, will make interesting reading and will also give an idea of the seriousness of the situation. Surgery details: Bishopton Community Library - 1st Monday of every month (6.30pm), Cargill Hall - 2nd Monday of every month (7.30pm), Langbank Village Hall - 3rd Monday of every month (6.30pm). Come and visit the Summer Art Show at The Bridge, enjoy holiday paintings, kids on the beach and others by Phyllis Milligan. There is also a selection of prints from only £10 and who knows, there could be more colourful surprises in store for you.

Langbank: It was good to see the primary school-children doing cycling proficiency training in the sunshine. I was also really impressed by the outdoor mobile climbing wall the youngsters were scaling! Planning Department has received 67 objections to a proposed retail and office development, which they are considering. I hope to be able to report next month on the results of the week of traffic monitoring, which took place on Main Road recently. Bridge of Weir: After Riverside buses ceased trading, McGills have picked up the routes, but there have been some changes. People affected may want to consider using “My Bus Rural”, which is available for anyone living in Renfrewshire not covered by a regular service. It is publicly funded so we need to use it or we risk losing it! They can be contacted at 0845 128 4025 or www.spt.co.uk/bus/mybus. I have received an assurance from the Planning Department that there are no plans for further green-belt release, anywhere in the village beyond that already detailed in the Proposed Local Development Plan. Although the Department is considering green-belt release at Shillingworth, to which they have received 552 objections, they have specifically indicated that they would resist any proposals in respect of the adjoining fields. Bishopton: At the Community Council meeting in June, representatives from Taylor Wimpey advised that there is already a significant level of enquiries from prospective buyers in the Dargavel Village development where they will be building 344 houses over the next 8 years. Houses will also be built by Cala and Persimmon. Local Area Committee: At the recent quarterly meeting, I was pleased to see that several organisations in Ward 10 received a boost to their finances. I can be contacted by email at: cllr.maria.brown@renfrewshire.gov.uk, by phone: 0300 300 1259, mobile: 07534 148 734. The Council will be in recess until late August, so there will be no surgeries until September.

Put your Heart into Intensive Care After a break-up, make sure to put your heart into intensive care. Give yourself time to heal. Focus on you, focus on good, focus on now. A break-up when all your heart was in it can be as difficult to get through as losing someone by death. For the first short while, just focus on anything good in your life, and take it day by day, or hour by hour if you have to. Find things in your life that you need to focus attention on, and that you really love doing. Creative things where your attention needs to be on them are good. Be with your feelings. Grieving can’t be rushed. You’re not weak for feeling pain, you’re sensitive. Only sensitive people can be compassionate, and really help others, but they also feel pain a lot more strongly. Get detached...write a list of every quality you would want in a partner. Then go back to that list and honestly answer if this relationship gave you those things: 1: in the beginning, 2: 90% of the time, and 3: the last while.

Please note that due to circumstances there will be no Lunch Club in June or July. The next Lunch Club will be on Friday 30th August.

Bridge of Weir TARA At the Bridge of Weir Tenants & Residents Association (TARA) meeting on Tuesday 18th June the Chair reported on his recent meeting with Mrs Burgess, the Minister for Housing & Welfare and advised us of the questions raised regarding the bedroom tax and how this affects armed forces personnel. The question whether the Scottish Government has in place a system for monitoring these arrears was also raised. Discretionary Housing Grants are available, for further information contact the Local Council. The Chair then passed around a newsletter from Regional Network regarding Region 7. Another newsletter from Keepmoat, one of the SQHS contractors, was passed around. There was no police report as no police attended the meeting even though yet again they had been invited. Complaints were raised by various local residents to the lack of street pride among the local shop owners and the rubbish and cigarette ends left lying outside their premises. If every shop owner swept up outside their own shops this would mean that Brighter Bridge of Weir could continue their good work keeping the barrier baskets etc looking really good. It has been noted that the garden area in the Livery Walk is still under Council control and the untidiness of this will be raised with the Council again. Cllr Maria Brown gave a report regarding various issues to do with Anti Social Behaviour which had been brought to her attention prior to the meeting. Brian Turner, PGTF, gave a brief report regarding the cycle track and the need to keep the track bed safe from being built on to allow a possible rail link being reinstated in future years to come. Various housing issues were raised in relation to St Mungo Court & Park Road. As well as environmental safety issues with the footpath between Houston Road (behind the kiosk) and Mimosa Road and the stairs between Castle Road & Park Road The next scheduled meeting with be on Tuesday 17th September in the Cargill Hall at 7.30pm and as usual is open to the public.

If the answer to all or many of the things you want is “no” then it’s not that person or that relationship you wanted, but instead it’s attachment breaking that’s rough, or a strong reaction to rejection, or some other thing that’s pulling you back toward something that you really weren’t all that happy in when you were in it. Do not put yourself in the firing line, move as far out of the way as you can, feel not anger but pity, and be glad you are you. For now, enjoy the things about being single that you couldn’t enjoy before... whatever those things may be. Do things that you want to do, when you want to do them, and learn to love and feel complete in a single life. Learn to love all the great things that are unique and wonderful about you, and really discover who you are and what you really love in life. Whenever the time is right for a new love, you will be whole, and will have so much more to offer. You will have found you. Mo Ferrington Advanced Clinical Hypnotherapist. kilbarchan & lochwinnoch Weaver’s Cottage, Kilbarchan Last month Sir Kenneth Calman, Chairman of the National Trust for Scotland, accompanied by his wife, enjoyed a visit and watched the new Battle of Bannockburn commemorative tartan being woven. The Old Library, Kilbarchan All of the team were delighted to be presented with a Lilias Day Rosette for our window decoration. Yes, it was only 3rd prize, but the fun we had deciding on a theme and then working together to create the display was beyond measure. Our one window was a replica of how it looked when, in 2000. This was when KIPCo took over the organising and the financing of The Old Library Centre from Renfrewshire Council. The other window was a bright appeal for new volunteers and an advert of our present activities. The Board wish to thank our present hardworking volunteers and to thank the many supporters who, by their annual donation, keep the Library going and make sure that the windows are not boarded up again. A great many people use the facilities and we are always delighted to greet visitors, many from abroad tracing family links. KIPCo offers a very wide ranging programme including classes on computing, bridge, yoga and pilates and groups involved in family history, book club and craft. Also available are laminating, faxing, including receiving a fax for you to collect, internet access and printing. Our commercial photocopying machine is capable of a quite complex range of programmes up to A3 sizing and colour. All our pricing is very competitive. We are delighted that we have purchased a commercial dishwasher and so you can be sure that your cup of tea or coffee is now produced in a very hygienically washed cup. Our rooms are available for hire and are used for concerts, meetings and business training sessions. The Centre is an ideal setting for seminars and ideally situated being so close to the M8 and with free parking available nearby. The Board and Team are taking a holiday in July. It really is a busman’s holiday because when the Centre is closed repairs and maintenance will be undertaken. I wish to thank you for your continuing support and hope to see you in August. See www.kipcokil.com for Centre details.

Lilias Day: To Chairman David Blair, and his Team, for their significant contribution to community life, and who have brought pleasure to Kilbarchan families for decades and I want to say thank you to you all. Power Surge: Due to damage caused by theft to a nearby sub station, subsequently when residents turned on their appliances dozens of them suffered massive appliance failure. I met with McCrorie Place residents and representatives of Scottish Power, and I am working with Stewart Maxwell MSP to support the residents in their campaign. Lochwinnoch Gala Day: I was honoured to open the 2013 event at the request of Organiser Jane Owens and her outstanding Gala Day Team. The theme of the Gala this year was Scotland, and I made the point in my opening address that just as Scotland is a proud country so is Lochwinnoch a proud community, and that the day should be a celebration of all that is good in both country and community. The whole of the village owes a great debt to Jane Owens and her team for all their hard work that made it such an enjoyable day, and we even had sunshine to boot. Open Night: At Lochwinnoch Golf Club, organised by parents seeking to provide a successor service to Lochwinnoch of Out School Club which sadly went into liquidation earlier this year. I have lobbied the Council to provide an interim service over the summer and parent feedback to me regarding this, and the prospects for the new Out of School service in the village, has been very positive. Support for families and parents to allow them to be economically active is vital for Lochwinnoch as a community and the new service has my total support. Roadhead Roundabout: I attended a site visit with a senior manager from Transport Scotland concerning the possibility of a crossing at the Roadhead. This would make it more viable for those villagers seeking to use the bus service into Glasgow from that point. Transport Scotland will consider our request and report back in the autumn of 2013. My Kilbarchan surgery is on the second Wednesday of the month, excluding July, at 8pm in the Steeple Hall, and my Lochwinnoch advice surgery is on the fourth Wednesday of the month, excluding July, at 8pm in the McKillop Institute. Lochwinnoch Gala Day 2013 In addition to the credits on the programme, we would just like to thank all the unsung heroes on the day who helped to erect marquees, collected litter, sold programmes and generally fixed anything that needed fixing!! Particular thanks to Willie Gamble who organised the music all afternoon, Karen McDermott from the PTA, who brought in enough people to organise the enthusiastic children’s games, Lochwinnoch Primary School staff for their time and patience, Kevin Moulds for the great photographs, and our Councillors and the staff at Renfrewshire District Council for opening the Annex and going one step further to make the day work well. Last but not least, a BIG thank you to all of you who came along and helped to make it a great party day. Whoever fixed the weather did a fantastic job! Glentyan Electrical Sub Station: Following irresponsible criminal damage to the Glentyan electrical sub station in Kilbarchan on the 27th May, the subsequent power surge resulted in damage to electrical domestic appliances in several properties in McCrorie Place, New Street, and the Wheatlands, Meadside, and Glentyan areas of the village. Those affected, reported that the initial response from Scottish Power left much to be desired, with inadequate re assurance on the safety issues, and an unwillingness to consider any financial compensation for the damage incurred. Following a residents meeting, with Scottish Power representatives, and further representations from myself, I was glad to report to those affected that Scottish Power had reflected on the views expressed, and were prepared to cover the excess on individual insurance claims, and offer a 50 pounds goodwill payment. Having urged Scottish Power to do the right thing, and supported their customers I am pleased that they have moved on this issue ,however I will continue to seek reassurance for all Kilbarchan residents regarding safety standards at this and other sub stations. Steps at Platform 1: Work at Milliken Station which Network Rail will undertake in October will provide access to all As a daily train user frequently using the station, I know that this will be welcomed by all rail passengers in Kilbarchan particularly those with mobility difficulties . Lilias Day, and Lochwinnoch Gala Day: Many thanks to David Blair [retiring after 28 years on the Lilias Day committee] and Jane Owens and their respective committee members for organising 2 wonderful spectacles of colour and pageant. Both committees are always looking for volunteers - if you have spare time to support these events which showcase the heritage Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch, I am sure your help will be appreciated. I will not be holding a surgeries in July and will be taking a short break in the middle of the month. I will continue to work hard for Kilbarchan and Lochwinnoch during the Council recess. After forty five years serving in the local community, Ian and Marian Simpson retired from the Agricultural Show Committees. Marion has worked diligently on the Industrial Section Committee and this year presented the prizes for Crafts, Baking and Provisions for adult and children’s sections. She herself is an excellent baker and has won many prizes over the years. Ian presented the Cups for Livestock and Equestrian Sections of the Agricultural Show. He in turn was presented with a beautiful bone handled walking stick for forty five years of service to the committee, with his expertise of management on Elderslie Estates for many years. He has also managed his own farm and has shown cattle in the past and this experience has been put to good use in helping make Houston Agricultural Show the great event it is in Houston’s calendar.

kilmacolm & quarriers The New Surgery After years of hopes, disappointment, progress and setbacks , the NEW New Surgery , in the heart of Kilmacolm was officially opened on 18th May 2013. The day began with the sound of the pipes (courtesy of Josh Fraser), welcoming the guests into the bright, new premises. Dr Mia Manasses thanked the guests for all their work in achieving the move and the transformation of the building. 100 year old Mr Herbert I’Anson, the practice’s most senior patient kindly agreed to cut the ribbon. His moving and eloquent speech about the care he has received from the surgery was the highlight of the occasion. The centre of Kilmacolm has been transformed by the renovation of the two schools and the staff of the New Surgery feel very privileged to be able to share the old primary school with the library. We are very grateful to the KNCC for their support and patience. We would like to include photographs of how the building looked when it was still a school on our storyboard display. If you have one we could scan please could you contact Margaret Smyth, Practice Manager on 01505 872844.

KDS Calendar Girls - a great success!

‘Calendar Girls’ has been adjudged a great success & has justified our decision to put on an additional performance on the Wednesday. We had nearly full houses for all four performances & won praise for their slickness, pace & professionalism. I hope that, in the words of the original Calendar Girls, you ‘laughed a lot, cried a little & went away feeling uplifted’. Much respect to the ladies who disrobed on stage, & also to those who disrobed for the calendar. Due to their bravery & the generosity of our audiences we have been able to present a cheque to Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research (LLR) for £1,000 - with an additional tranche to come as calendars continue to sell. Calendars for 2014 are still available in Kilmacolm from The Village Newsagent, The Cross Cafe or from me, for donations over £5.

Preparations for this year’s pantomime are continuing apace. We are down to the final choice of script, the techy team is in formation & we shall shortly be announcing audition dates - so, if you’re 18 or over keep an eye out for announcements, or contact Rosie Thirde (01505 873088) or myself (01505 872465) for details. And now for another panto fact: “Slapstick” takes its name from a device used in “Harlequinades”. Harlequin carried a sword, made of wood which alternated between being a weapon and a magic wand. This sword had a hinged flap, which created a very loud “slapping” noise when used, generally to give a more theatrical effect when used to slap fellow actors. To this day a pantomime comic will insist on using the talents of a drummer in the orchestra pit to “point” his comic stage business of slaps, falls or trips. The slapstick may also have had a secondary purpose. Harlequin, in these semi-improvised scenes would be in control of the situation. He would know when the scenery should be changed, and it is believed he would “Clap” his slapstick to indicate that this should happen, in the form of an audible cue. This may well be the basis of the theatrical superstition that one should never clap backstage, for fear of bad luck, since bringing heavy scenery down upon your head could be bad luck indeed! At this time of year, us Councillors get invited to lots of school events. St Anthony’s show this year took us on a musical trip from the 1950’s to the present day. It was a terrific show and I thoroughly enjoyed it so well done the kids of St Anthony’s. I was at Lilias day a few weeks ago and I am afraid it was spoiled a bit by several heavy downpours. However a week later, at the St Aidan’s fete the weather was glorious. It is a shame, after all the hard work people put in, the weather still dictates how the day goes. Another event I was at was the rowing regatta at Castle Semple Loch. It was a great day and I was pleased to see so many young people taking part and the organisers did a great job in keeping the event looking very slick despite record numbers taking part. Many of you may have seen the artists impression of the new Johnstone Town Hall. I have to say it looks great and I think it will provide a great service for the people of the villages as well as Johnstone. I was involved recently in an agreement the council have entered into with the fire and rescue service This will identify people who are most at risk of danger due to their health or life choices of being involved in a fire . I am afraid too many people in our communities are badly injured or killed in fires. Till next time enjoy what’s left of the summer. l

I was in training for a sponsored charity bike ride on behalf of a charity called Marten’s progress. I was part of a team of three who cycled from Howwood to Arran and back the long way raising much needed funds for Marten and also raising more awareness of the ABR treatment that he has been receiving. Marten has Cerebral Palsy and his family have been utilising this treatment to improve his quality of life. I would urge you to go online and have a look at his journey and see the difference that this treatment has made to Marten. www.martensprogress. co.uk and abrscotland.com for further information. Grass Cutting: Many residents are raising concerns about the grass cutting in some areas. In some areas they are lifting the grass and in some areas the grass is being left uncollected. Grab and Go (School Lunches for primary schools): There has been a pilot involving several schools in Renfrewshire. If you would like more details regarding this new scheme and the implications for your child please do not hesitate to contact me. Picnic in the Park: We are planning a community get together in the Howwood Park, to bring together our local community on the 18th August at 1pm till 4pm. The aim is to have fun, compete in some games (optional) and meet other villagers. More details to follow when we have confirmed the details and activities. My surgeries at present are being held weekly on a Thursday evening: Howwood Village Hall - 1st Thursday of every month - 6pm to 7pm, Cochrane Castle/St David’s Joint Campus, West Johnstone - 1st Thursday of every month 7.15 to 8pm, Auchenlodment Primary School - 3rd Thursday of every month - 5.15pm to 5.50pm, Elderslie Village Hall - 3rd Thursday of every month - 6pm to 7pm. Surgery details may change particularly during school and public holidays, please call to confirm times and dates of surgeries. As required by planning legislation, Inverclyde Council has published its first Local Development Plan for public consultation. The plan is the Council’s view as to what it considers should be the overall development strategy, providing a land use planning framework to guide development and investment in Inverclyde over the next 5-10 years and beyond. The plan will now be subject to an eight week consultation period which runs until the 26th of July 2013 and the Council would like your views and comments on the Proposed Plan. The plan can be viewed at all Council libraries in Inverclyde and at the Municipal Buildings in Greenock. Alternatively you can access the plan at www.inverclyde.gov.uk/ldp. I would encourage you to have a look at the plan and submit your views on it. Recently I attended a parade in Port Glasgow by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders. It was great to welcome the troops home alongside the hundreds of people gathered there. I had the privilege of visiting the new St Columba’s High School in Gourock and the new Shared Campus in Port Glasgow. Both of these projects are coming on really well and will be opened to pupils and staff later in the year. I’m extremely impressed by the amazing facilities that will be on offer to the school community and the wider community once up and running. I don’t have any surgery this month due to the summer recess but please don’t hesitate to contact me with any issues. In addition to my own surgeries, I’ve held two joint surgeries with Mary Fee MSP and I hope to hold more in the future. You can reach me on 01475 712727 (during office hours) and 07881 280016 (anytime) or by emailing me at james.mccolgan@inverclyde.gov.uk. I understand that the Post Office have agreed the transfer of the sub post office to the Village Stores. I supported this move in my response to the consultation. Kilmacolm needs a post office for many reasons, but these days the only economically viable way of continuing the service is in conjunction with a retail offering. Inverclyde Council have awarded “Colourful Kilmacolm” a grant of £1000 to assist in their endeavours. I am pleased to support this initiative and welcome the news that “Colourful Kilmacolm” will take responsibility from the Council for the concrete planters at Birkmyre Park. In conjunction with the Community Council the Masons have placed 20 odd small pots around the shops and Cargill Centre. Riverside Transport have unfortunately ceased to trade and temporarily McGill’s have maintained the No1 service during June until Gillens take over the route in July. SPT have moved smartly to maintain what is a vital rural route serving both upper Kilmacolm and Quarriers Village. The bus will continue to stop at Morrison’s on its way to Johnstone Station. I attended the official opening of the New Surgery in the centre of the village. This is a very modern facility which is not only an asset to the village, but provides rental income to the Cargill Centre. A fine example of the community profitably using redundant council property. We wish them well. We are out to consultation on 2 hour parking in the main car park. It is essential for the retailers in the village that customers can easily park and do their shopping. Currently the car park can be full for most of the day. We do though need to consider shop employees, bus travellers and village centre residents who may wish to park all day. To this end an overflow long stay car park behind the old police station could be the solution to maintaining the economic viability and prosperity of the village. My surgery is the 27th July 10am-11am at the Cargill Centre. I can be contacted on 01475 712727 and 741969 and 07766 992294.

Recently I attended the first Inverclyde Council for Voluntary Services (ICVS) Community Awards ceremony in the Beacon Arts Centre. It was an excellent night in celebration of the work that many voluntary groups and individuals do in Inverclyde. There were a number of awards on the night with the overall main one going to Inverclyde Foodbank. A very worthy winner. On the 11th June the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders marched and paraded in Port Glasgow town centre. It was a wonderful spectacle with a very good crowd attending on the day. I felt proud to be there especially since my late father had served with the Argyll’s from 1945 - 1948. At the Riverside Youth Brass Band concert in Port Glasgow town hall, the young musicians were again fantastic playing to a very high standard under their director Lynda Nicholson. Several of the young people have now been chosen to play at regional and national levels which is a testimony to Lynda, their schools tutors and their parents. A real credit to Inverclyde. The “Let the Games Begin” production in Greenock town hall was a great show displaying the abundance of talent that Inverclyde has under the direction of Brian Keachie and Inverclyde Music Services. Inverclyde Carer’s Council launched their third Carer’s Charter a few weeks ago and I was honoured to be asked along. Sadly too many people still do not recognise themselves as carers or know that there are agencies out there, including the council, that can offer advice and a range of help and services. For me carers are unsung heroes who save the state billions of pounds every year. Finally, now that summer is upon us I would like to wish everyone a nice break whether that is getting a away for a week or two or simply staying at home. Hopefully, the weather is good for all of us. My next surgery will be on Wednesday 10th July at Kilmacolm Community Centre at 1pm - 2pm. Anyone wanting to contact me can do so by phoning me at my council office on 01475 712727 or on my mobile phone 07747 765 839, or by emailing me at jim.macleod@inverclyde.gov.uk or writing to me at Inverclyde Council, Municipal Buildings, Clyde Square, Greenock, PA15 ILY. l

I am delighted that Quarrier’s Sommerville Weir Hall is now accessible to the whole village community following the installation of a passenger lift and disabled toilet. The works were funded by a £41,000 grant from the Council’s Communities Facilities Grant Fund. Well done to Katrina Vine for once again rising to the challenge by securing this funding on behalf of the village. On 11th June I visited the new £44m Port Glasgow Community Campus to view the progress of works and I was delighted by what I saw. It really will be a fantastic learning environment for the young people who attend it and a tremendous asset for the communities living in this part of Inverclyde. I was particularly delighted by the facilities on offer at the new Craigmarloch School for children with additional support needs. They are truly exceptional. Later the same morning I attended the parade through Port Glasgow by the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders (5 SCOTS), Inverclyde’s local regiment. The troops received a very warm welcome. In the afternoon I attended the first performance of the new schools’ musical “Let the Games Begin” in Greenock Town Hall and was pleased to see the pupils of Primary 5 in Kilmacolm Primary School performing along with pupils from a number of other local schools. The show was another success for Inverclyde’s excellent Music Service.

Colourful Kilmacolm At a well supported inaugural meeting of Colourful Kilmacolm on 13th May a constitution was approved and a committee elected. This allowed us to seek funding and we are pleased to report that we have received startup funding from Inverclyde Community Fund as well as a grant from Inverclyde Council Small Grants. Other sources of funding are being actively pursued as the initial costs of planters etc. will be considerable. In this regard we are open to all offers of support, of money or in kind. If you have given us your contact details you should by now have received membership and standing order forms. We are happy to have the support both of those who want to be ‘hands-on’, and also of anyone who just wants to encourage us with financial help. We are also in the process of setting up a website which will be developed in the coming months. If there is anyone out there who has a supply of old bricks, no matter their condition, we might be able to use them as drainage. For more information or to offer help, please contact Peter (01505 872448) or Diane (01505 872611).

At the Council’s Grants Sub-Committee on 12 June Kilmacolm’s green fingered residents were rewarded with funding of £1,250. Colourful Kilmacolm received £1,000 towards the cost of installing planters on the village square and Kilmacolm Horticultural Society received £250 for new equipment. Due to the summer recess I don’t have any surgeries this month. These will resume in August. Have a great summer! In the meantime you can contact me directly to discuss any matters that are of concern to you by telephone on 01475 712020 (during office hours) and 871368 (home) or by email to Stephen. schools news Eco Schools - 3rd Green Flag

Houston Primary School is delighted to announce that they have achieved the prestigious Eco Schools Green Flag status for the third time! The coveted Green Flag is awarded to schools who exhibit pro-active environmental work covering topics such as water, health and well-being, waste management, litter, transport, school grounds, bio-diversity and energy. The Eco School’s assessor, Miss Love, came on the 28th May and was most impressed with the projects which Houston Primary School’s Eco Representatives and Eco Rangers spoke so eloquently about. She particularly enjoyed her tour of the school grounds: Eco Greenhouse ~ We made this using 2 litre plastic bottles and recycled wood. It took three years to build! Gym Equipment ~ We love it! Mrs McPherson applied for a grant from the Big Lottery. Orchard ~ We planted 16 fruit trees this year ~ Raised Beds, Each class has its own raised bed. This year we had a country theme ~ Bird & Beastie Box. We collected Morrison’s vouchers and got this special home for birds and beasties! On Tuesday 11th June pupils from P6 and P7 took part in the Strawberry Field Nursery Cup at Ardgryffe Park. The players played extremely well and beat local schools to lift the cup for the second year running!

Congratulations to the boys, along with team managers Mrs McPherson and John O’Hare

She is dedicated to helping young people improve their singing voices. If you wish to improve your singing voice and learn the essential breathing techniques that not only strengthen the voice, but more importantly protect it, then come along. Classes will cover all aspects of Musical Theatre performance including acting and dancing. Only 20 places are available each week, early booking will avoid disappointment. Strawberry Field Nursery Bright Stars Building: We have had a busy few weeks practising for our Graduation day, which was held on Tuesday 11th June. The children sang some songs and then received their certificates. Hardly a dry eye in the house. Teachers from the local primary schools have also been visiting the children and brining their buddies to meet them. Nursery staff also assisted in induction days at Houston Primary to ensure a good transition from nursery to school. Rainbow Building: Children have been enjoying playing in the garden with all the beautiful sunshine that we have had. We were also busy making a farm yard collage for the Houston show.

As we come to the end of another very successful year, we wish Mrs Laurie and Mrs Nonweiler health and happiness as they retire from the school. A huge thanks to all who are associated with our School and Nursery class and for the tremendous support given to us throughout the year. We wish everyone a very happy summer holiday. l

Howwood Primary School

The Howwood village community has been celebrating 50 years of the Primary School on its present site with a series of very well attended and most enjoyable events. The official opening of the Trim Trail was held on a glorious afternoon on 26th April, with many members of the community and friends of the school joining the pupils and staff. The ribbon was untied by George Whyte from P2 and his Mum, Gillian, whose skills in securing grant funding made this project possible. The children had also chosen items for the Time Capsule to be buried by our youngest pupil, Iona Burnfield and former Head Cleaner Isobel Donaldson. Generous support from the community meant we were able to put on a super display of photos from across the last 50 years. This was fascinating for our visitors! We were very fortunate to have the support of Mrs. Sarah Galloway, the school librarian, in gathering archive material and setting out the exhibition.

On 30th April, P7 pupils from Kilbarchan Primary travelled to Dalguise Outdoor Activity Centre for a 4 day residential trip and had a great time! We enjoyed a wide range of activities including raft building (we got wet!), zip wire sliding and tree climbing. We also had a

The pupils and staff worked very hard to put on a series of fantastic shows. Each class took a different decade and wrote the script around events in the school at this time. Each part of the show was linked by the drama club’s film, where members of staff were all too accurately portrayed by the pupils! The school’s fantastic work in improving the environment and promoting energy saving measures has been recognised by our second Green Flag. We are so proud!

Kidston Kids At Kidston Kids in Kilmacolm, we have had lots of fun and fresh air with our friends. We have been out planting our tubs and watering our Sunflowers. We also went on a big bus to Lunderston Bay. With the help of the Rangers from Clyde Muirshiel Country Park, we found lots of sea creatures. We would like to say a big “thank you” to Josy’s mum, Adelaide, who came in to do a little music session with us. It was very exciting and we all really enjoyed it. We are sad that our own ‘special sunflowers’ will be moving on to school or nursery. The children have not only grown in height but in confidence too and are now happy to tell us when it is tidy up time! We’ll miss you but we hope you make lots of new friends. We wish all our families a safe and happy summer and thank you for bringing your children to Kidston Kids. We will restart after our summer break on Monday 26th August If you would like to join the fun, please visit our website www.kidstonkids.co.uk or call Fiona 07811 766672.

Langbank Primary School Every Primary 3-7 pupil was involved in a wonderful production of ‘Olivia’ this term. The action packed show saw Olivia, an orphan, end up in cruel Mrs Murdstone’s Orphanage before escaping to London. She then met up with Eliza Doolittle, Fagin, Dodger and a whole host of well known characters before finding herself at Mrs dilber’s Poor School for Girls. As the plot Nomad Music – a collaboration of local music tutors running group music lessons and youth clubs – will hold their summer club during the school holidays for anyone aged 6 to 14. Every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10am till 2pm from the 2nd of July – 8th August in the Kilbarchan East Church Hall. 22nd Paisley Company The Boys’ Brigade Annual Inspection held on Friday, 17th May in Sherwood-Greenlaw Church The opening ceremony was preceded by the marching-on of the company. After dedication and raising of the Flag, Company Captain David Syme invited Inspecting Officer, Deputy Lord Lieutenant of Renfrewshire James Wardrop OBE, to view the assembled three sections, totalling over 60 boys, -- Company; Junior and Anchor Boys. An excellent turn-out of Mums, Dads and family members ensured an enthusiastic audience, who gave much encouragement to the boys in Marching (Anchor Boys); Gymnastics (Company Section); Games (Junior Section), also Songs (Anchor Boys). There were Drill Movements and Marching from the Company Section, too. The Gymnastics drew much applause, especially the Vaulting and Springboard callisthenics performed by members of Company Section. The presentation of prizes and awards was superseded by the announcement that three members, Connor Smith, Nick Salmon and Connor McCuaig have gained their Queen’s Badge. In his Inspecting Officer’s remarks, and resplendent in full uniform, Deputy Lord Lieutenant James Wardrop congratulated the Officers, Staff and the members of the 22nd Paisley Company Boys’ Brigade. He also had words of praise for the parents, whose encouragement and dedication ensured their sons were a credit, not only to themselves, but to society at large. This was an inspiring evening and showed that today’s youth has much to offer the future. Report and Pictures by Murray Balfour

Gryffe High School - Author Victoria Campbell Victoria Campbell, author of the popular teenage novel ‘Viking Gold’ came into the school to talk to the new S2 pupils about her book. Victoria is a former GH pupil who was a lawyer before following her dream of becoming a writer. She gave pupils and aspiring authors great writing tips and spoke about the fascinating and bloody history of the Vikings. After reading from her book she showed pupils her Viking artefacts, which included a Viking helmet and broadsword and explained how these would have been used in battle. I am delighted to say that Victoria has accepted our invitation to become GHS’s Reading Patron. She will be coming back into the school next session to hold creative writing workshops with the new S1s and to work with us on future reading and writing initiatives. Both pupils and staff found Victoria’s talk to be fascinating and informative. She in turn was very impressed by the pupils’ enthusiasm. Kilbarchan Community Nursery

In June some of the children had an ‘environmental walk’ round the village looking for signs and different forms of writing. They found names on street signs, shops and the church notice board. The children’s growing awareness of environmental print will help them when they learn are learning to read. June also marked the end of another year at nursery for all our pre-school children. We held our end of term presentation on the last day and although it was a sad occasion, all the children are now ready to move onto primary school in August. To help the children to make the transition as smooth as possible, the children who will be going to Kilbarchan Primary have all been allocated a ‘First friend’. These are children who will be in Primary seven in August and will help the new children to settle in school. They visited the nursery to meet the children and also had great fun in the playground getting used to the new games painted on the ground. We wish all the children well in August and hope that will come back and visit us in nursery.

St Benedict’s High School

Earlier this year pupils from St Benedict’s High School were joined by pupils from Gleniffer, Trinity and Paisley Grammar on a school trip to Cern in Geneva, Switzerland to visit the science facility in which the Higgs bosun particle was discovered. Here is an account of the trip by Daniel O’Brien an S6 pupil from St Benedict’s. An affordable trip to CERN seemed a prospect almost too good to be true for the motley crew of sixth years and teachers, now crammed into an EasyJet high above the Alps. And, as we explored the calm streets of Geneva after being delivered by a near-silent train with perfect punctuality, I still wasn’t sure it had sunk in yet.

Kilmacolm Nursery Class Kilmacolm Nursery Class have travelled by minibus, by coach and on foot to reach different places, both near and far, and what a wonderful time we have had in the process! Visits to the Beacon Centre in Greenock to find out what it is like behind the scenes of a theatre was very enlightening, trips to the park in Quarrier’s Village, an ante-preschool outing to Pandemonium in Erskine and Robertson Park in Renfrew and a pre-school trip to Deep Sea World in North Queensferry rounded off a fabulous spell of outdoor activity. New play stations have been set out in the outside play area. We now have easels on the fence for painting and drawings, guttering beside the water tray to allow us to watch water flow, building blocks, stored on wire shelves, are available and new number plaques help to make the play area a more inviting place to be. Lots of vegetables and flowers have been planted and we look forward to them being established. Before the end of the session, we will have Sports Day during Health Week and an Award Ceremony to mark children moving on to primary school or finishing their first year at nursery. We also have to say a big THANK YOU to Mrs McIntosh as she will not return next year. She has been with us in the mornings for two years now and has been a valued member of staff. We wish her well in the future and hope she keeps in touch. l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

Abbey Nursery This time of year at Abbey is always full of special events and wonderful moments which stay in the hearts of everyone at the nursery. We thought we would just share some of these magical times with you this month; looking at our Graduation of thirty children to primary school and our summer Pirates and Princesses BBQ where we were blessed with such great weather nobody wanted the day to end. As well as all the activities for children, the parents took part in races and Pirate Pete shared his magic and humour with children ‘of all ages’!!

However, after an obscenely early start and an introductory 8am particle physics lecture, it was clear that we had arrived. A quirky tour guide showed us around the spotless Accelerator Technologies building which housed parts and testing equipment for the €3 billion collider, humming 100m below our feet. There was also a glimpse of the control room for ATLAS, the 7000-tonne detector seeking new particles like the recently-confirmed Higgs boson.

The remainder of the day was spent in the Globe of Science and Innovation, a striking two-storey tall wooden sphere that greets visitors as they enter the CERN site. It contained interactive exhibitions including chairs that explained string theory even the original Edinburgh University paper on the Higgs! After a final group photo the tram took us back to Geneva and home. A good time, indeed, was had by all. l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l l

St Columba Church playgroup Playgroup had a wonderful end-of-year trip to Finlaystone and were blessed with glorious weather. We enjoyed a challenging nature hunt, filling our bags with leaves and pine cones. We then took part in boisterous parachute play plus socialised over snack, before having lots of fun on the pirate ship. It was great that so many families could make it and we had a lovely family outing. May and June are always hectic with various events and this year we have been especially busy with high numbers of children which is great to see. Don’t forget that we are back on Thursday 22nd August with lots more fun and play with all our wonderful resources and experienced staff. If you are interested in a place on Monday, Tuesday or Thursday morning give our membership secretary Jenny a call on 07557 656968. Our toddler group will return on Wednesday’s from Wednesday 21st August between 10am and 11.30am for children from birth to 3 years, and is a great chance for your little ones to try out different toys and make new friends, we always look forward to welcoming new faces. Please check our facebook page - St Columba Playgroup & Toddlers Kilmacolm. For further information about the group. We also have a new email address stcolumbachurchplaygroup@ gmail.com mailto:stcolumbachurchplaygroup@gmail.com so please use this to contact us with any questions regarding playgroup or toddlers. We will be holding a nearly new baby sale on Saturday 31st August with a few stalls selling new baby clothes and equipment too, look out for further details soon. Duchal Nursery School

Langbank Playgroup

Despite the weather, and as we do every year, Duchal Nursery had a great day at the Kilmacolm Show. There really was something for everyone who visited our stall. A big thank you to everyone who helped out, and to all who came along and treated themselves to some of our home baking goodies that were on sale, entered our competitions or even had their faces painted. The children were very excited to see their work on display, and a huge well done goes to Anna Robertson for winning the cup. We were all very proud. It was also a great opportunity for those who are joining us next year or who are considering it to learn more about what we do. With the improving weather we have taken lots more opportunities to take

We’ve had a wonderful year at Playgroup in Langbank with great numbers of children and very supportive families, enjoying play and learning with peers on a Friday morning, led by our two qualified and experienced Playleaders. The summer term flew past with visitors from Oral Health and the local Primary, Sports Day, Graduation and a fun football session too plus chilling out with the playdough is always relaxing. A new opportunity for our children this year was the monthly gymnastics sessions which proved to be very popular and will be repeated in the new session. We have once again enjoyed a close link with Langbank Primary, with a number of visits to and from the school throughout the year. 11 of our children will be moving on to Primary School this year and we would like to wish them well as they embark on this exciting new stage of their life. Although not a nursery we still follow the themes from the Curriculum for Excellence to help ensure all of our children are as well prepared as possible for their transition to school. Our latest Care Inspectorate report rated our Care and Support and Staffing as “Very Good”. All children from Langbank, Castlebank and the surrounding areas, age from 2.5 years are very welcome. For more details and to enquire about a place in the new session, please contact our Chair, Jacqueline on 01475 540728. Turtle Tots were delighted to recently announce Olympic swimmer and leading sports scientist, Professor Greg Whyte as the ambassador for their unique children’s swimming programme. Whyte pushed David Walliams and Eddie Izzard to their physical limits for Sport Relief and coached the celebrities who climbed Mount Kilimanjaro for Comic Relief.

the children outside. We have had our Sports Day in the Birkmyre Park which was great fun for the children, with our French Teacher Madame Camelford giving our the awards. We also had a Toddle Waddle, and with the help of lots of mums, dads and carers, we were able to take the children on an outing to Lunderston Bay. Armed with their buckets and spades, the children had a really great day, as did the adult helpers. Our Blue Teddies having been getting ready for their big move to primary school after the summer holidays, and have been able to visit the local primary schools on a number of occasions over the past few months to help them get ready for what is a very exciting time for them. If you live in Kilmacolm or the surrounding area, you can give your children the best possible start to life at Duchal Nursery School. Scout Presentations at Kilmacolm It was a night of laughter hugs and celebrations at Kilmacolm Cubs as the Pack said goodbye to its three Duke of Edinburgh helpers and presented a host of badges. Popular Duke of Edinburgh helpers Sophie, Adam and Joe said a fond farewell to the youngsters and were mobbed by the Cubs after a presentation by Akela Audrey Espie. Among the badges handed out on the night was a special presentation of Chief Scout Silver for Cub, Elliot Nixon as this year’s session prepares to draw to a close. Turtle Tots Baby and Toddler Swimming Classes provide a really special bonding experience for mums (or dads!) with their babies, and are also fun and sociable. We use songs and nursery rhymes to help create a relaxed atmosphere in which your baby can naturally develop a love of water. We teach you to teach your baby to swim and each week we introduce a new progressive skill for your baby to encourage and assist them in their swimming journey. There are numerous health benefits associated with baby swimming including physical, emotional, neurological and social benefits. All of our classes have also been endorsed by personal trainers to ensure you gain maximum benefit from your time in the pool too. Laurel from Turtle Tots says: “At my classes you’ll learn how to swim with your baby above and below the water, and how to teach your baby water confidence and key life saving skills. We also hold a number of under water photo shoots throughout the year.” Laurel is fully qualified with the STA to teach baby swimming.

sports news 3rd Erskine Urban Orientering Race Local Orienteering club, Clydeside Orienteers, held their 3rd Erskine Urban Orienteering race on Saturday 1st June. Based at the Erskine Sports Centre, competitors had to run and navigate round the Bargarran and North Barr parts of Erskine. 90 competitors from all over Scotland took part, with courses ranging from 1k for under 12s to 10k for the elite athletes. The men’s open race was won by Will Hensman from Stirling, while the women’s open went to student Kirstin Maxwell from Edinburgh. There were CLYDE wins for Houston-based Amelia Petrie in the women’s supervet category and Alice Wilson in the girls under 12 race, while 9 year old Michael Paterson, also from Houston, was 2nd in the boys under 12 race. Race Organiser Andy Paterson said after the race “Urban orienteering is just the same as normal orienteering except the map used is of an urban area instead of a forest. It’s a bit easier that forest orienteering, but because everything happens much faster, you have to keep your wits about you! This is the third time we’ve held an urban orienteering race in Erskine and its always one that orienteers look forward to. Once people realised what was going on I saw lots of local people helping out by pointing people in the right direction! We’ve almost completed our map of the whole of Houston village so look out for some even closer to home orienteering soon”. The Erskine race itself is race 3 of a 7 race series across Scotland known as the Scottish Orienteering Urban League. You can find out more about this and other orienteering opportunities on the Clydeside Orienteers website – www. clydesideorienteers.org

Tennis Scotland Award for Alan Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash Club member, Alan Hutton, was presented with the Tennis Scotland Vice-President’s Award for long service in recognition of his voluntary work for more than half a century! Alan, who lives in Elderslie, became President of Elderslie LTC at a very young age and, despite the club not being a particularly large one, they won the Scottish Cup on three occasions and produced a trio of Scottish junior champions. He was also a driving force in the successful relocation of Elderslie LTC along with Bridge of Weir LTC to Houston to form Strathgryffe Tennis & Squash Club and has been instrumental in that club’s hugely impressive development since its formation in 1992, with the ‘Club of the Year’ title being won twice. Strathgryffe now has over 1100 members. Alan continues to serve on the Strathgryffe main committee as Treasurer. For details on membership or coaching at Strathgryffe please email: info@ strathgryffe.net or phone reception on 01505 615100.

Advertizer Delivery Boy Wins Medal The 2013 Scottish Schools Indoor Freestyle Championships took place at ‘Snow Factor’. Both the primary and secondary events went off smoothly with a fantastic level of riding on display from skiers and boarders. Congratulations to all who competed and in particular to the medal and trophy winners. Good news, Blair representing Gryffe High School, won third place in the Secondary Schools Individual section of the competition. Photograph of Blair being presented with medal from Iain Ramsay-Clapham of Snowsport Scotland.

Stewart Watt Does It Again The Duncan Trophy is awarded by Renfrewshire Golf Union to the County Youth Match Play Champion. It is contested by the leading 16 youths from the Stroke Play Championship and Renfrew Golf Club provides the venue. The defending champion was Stewart Watt from Old Course Ranfurly and he fought his way to the final where he met Craig Pirie, who had the advantage of playing on his home course. The final was a high quality, closely fought battle and local knowledge seemed to be favouring Craig as he sank a succession of putts to go 2-up. Stewart fought back but, with 3 holes to play, Craig was 1-up and looking confident. Stewart was determined to have the trophy on his shelf for another year and won both 16 and 17 to go 1-up with 1 to play. A half in par at 18 was enough to see the cup return to Bridge of Weir.

Elderslie Amateurs F.C. (Under 11’s) Elderslie Amateurs Under 11’s (2001) are currently on the look out for a sponsor for our team as we move from 7-a-side to 11-a-side in August. We train 3 times a week at different venues in the Renfrewshire area and play our home games at Stoddarts Playing Fields in Elderslie. At present we have a number of boys who play for us from the Renfrewshire area, we are looking for a sponsor who would get their name on the front of the strip, a team photograph for their business premises and anything else we could do to promote your business. Elderslie Amateurs 2001’s are also currently looking for new players who could enhance our squad on making the next step up to 11-aside football, any sponsor or player interested in joining our well run club please phone Ian Morris 07759 450825 or Stuart Brown 07515 528434.

Tom in First National

As I write I am gearing up for my first National Race contesting KGP (June 21st – 23rd). It’s at my favourite UK circuit GlanY-Gors in North Wales. Lots of hills and bends liken it to a rollercoaster – plus welsh weather!!! The Friday is given over to testing, with Qualifying and some Heats taking place on the Saturday and the remaining Heats and all-important Finals on the Sunday. I am driving as part of the ACR Birel-Ginetta Team. Teesside Karting in Middlesbrough is very kindly sponsoring me again this year and as an added bonus I have a Team in the British 24 Hour Race held over the August Bank Holiday weekend. Last year we came 5th in Class with 7 drivers but, having learnt that we can all sustain a good pace for 1½ to 2 hour stints, we are fielding a Team of 5 this year. This means less pit stops for driver changes so hopefully a more competitive outfit…. If our kart behaves itself!! Now I’ve finished my exams my parents and I, in conjunction with Birel, are looking at the best way to forward my racing career. As I mentioned in previous months, I will be testing in a car as I need fairly substantial sponsorship to progress further and car series offer huge crowds, excellent media coverage and obviously a lot more bodywork for sponsors logo’s ? I was also hoping to win a place on the AASE (Motorsport) next academic year, but unfortunately you have to be 16 when the course starts this August, so this ambition is on hold for 2014 - 2015! This course, which will be in addition to my school subjects, covers the non-driving aspects of becoming a professional driver e.g. fitness, nutrition and media skills. It visits top motorsport institutions and many top drivers from various motorsport disciplines help to present it. I’ll let you know how I get on at GYG in next month’s column…….. Birkmyre Girls Score in Scottish 7’s Birkmyre rounded off a successful season by entering an U’15 team in the SRU National 7’s competition at Peffermill. This is the first time that the club has been able to field a complete team from it’s own players and credit must go to team captain Charlotte Reid for her working in rounding up players from St Benedicts and Gryffe High School. For many of the team, this was their first taste of competitive rugby, but despite that they managed one win and one draw from their four games. Their efforts did not go unrecognised as they picked up the SRU fairplay trophy in the emerging teams competition. The U’15 girls have one more match before the end of the season when Auchterarder and Hillhead Jordanhill visit Birkmyre park at the end of June. If you would like to get involved or know any girls that might like to have a go, please visit the club website at www.birkmyre. org.uk or look for “Birkmyre Girls” on facebook. Girls from S1 to S6 are welcomed regardless of experience, although enthusiasm is welcomed. Ex ladies player Bronwen Scott is on hand to dispel any myths the girls or their parents may have about girls and ladies rugby. Gryffe HS and Birkmyre girls Louise and Siobhan McMillan picked up the Scottish U’18 cup playing for a West of Scotland team that narrowly beat a strong Murrayfield Wanderers team 5 tries to 4. Louise sealed the victory with a dramatic last minute try from the half way line battling over the line with two defenders trying to pull her down. The team was made up of girls from Ayr, Birkmyre, and HillheadJordanhill. This is Louise’s first year as an U’18, but she is now in the SRU pathway and trying to join her sister in the Scottish U’20 development squad.

Local Horticultural Society Wins Grant

Kilmacolm Horticultural Society were granted £250 in a share-out of nearly £80,000 in the first round of awards from Inverclyde Council’s Grants to Voluntary Organisations fund.

In spite of the wet conditions that greeted us on Saturday 15th June, sixteen of us made our way to The Weaver’s Cottage, Kilbarchan where we were warmly greeted by Christine McLeod, Property Manager and Weaver.

Arts groups, sports clubs and tenants associations are among the latest winners after submitting successful applications in the first round of discretionary awards.

Christine gave us a fascinating introduction to the art and history of dyeing and dye plants showing us wool dyed with various plants including rhubarb root, onion skins, madder, oak gall and Calendula. We then ventured into the garden, the rain being lighter, to admire the plant collection. Columbines, Alkanet, Dame’s Violet, Iris, Geranium, perennial Wallflower, Sweet Woodruff and Woad were all in flower in the largely herbaceous display of native dye plants. The ruins of another old cottage were covered in a pink haze of Fairy Foxglove.

Grants Sub-Committee Chair Councillor Jim Clocherty said: “We had over 50 applications for funding and each has been carefully considered. We recognise how important this money is to voluntary groups who carry out important work in the lives of their local communities and we always are keen to do what we can for them. I am delighted we have been able to make these awards and I look forward to the next round of applications later this year.”

We returned to the cottage to explore the rooms and see the looms – a most interesting morning and so close to home!

The Budget for the Grants to Voluntary Organisations Fund for 2013/14 is £381,430. Organisations receiving three year funding have already been allocated £120,650.

Flower Show

The Bridge of Weir Flower Show takes place next month on Saturday, 31st August and thoughts turn to what we might enter. The glorious weather in May and June lifted our spirits and was a much needed tonic for our gardens. The late spring meant many trees and plants were in blossom simultaneously which could mean a bumper autumn for some fruits and berries. The warmth will have also encouraged our plants to get growing. By the end of next month our gardens and vegetable plots should be full of colour, interest and produce and if you have anything you would like to bring to the show, please do. If you don’t already have a schedule, please call our Show Secretary on 01505-612898.

Gardening in July A butterfly haven

Adult butterflies feed on nectar, so stock your garden with nectar –filled flowers. Stick to old-fashioned varieties and single blooms – these tend to be richest in nectar. The more variety you offer, the wider the range of visitors you’ll attract. Position plants in a sunny, sheltered spot and keep them in flower longer by dead-heading them regularly. Try to plant a succession of flowers that will provide food from late February through to October. Dig in a good fertiliser before you start planting to make sure your butterfly border gets off to a good start. Catmint [Nepeta], Sedum, Verbena Bonariensis, Wallflower, Rosemary, Thyme, Lantana Camara, Salvia and plants with daisy flowers are all excellent choices. The combination of lavender and roses also attracts butterflies in droves. The Buddleia (pictured above), known for good reason as the butterfly bush, is one of the very best. Hard prune it in early spring for maximum flower power. Verbena Bonariensis (pictured left) is a stylish perennial which has regained popularity in recent years. Flowering from June to September with tightly packed clusters of purple flowers on tall stiff, branching stems, it is perfect for a sheltered, sunny, well-drained spot in the border.

Kilbarchan Bee Keepers Association

Usually in June there is a spell of about 2 weeks, referred to by beekeepers as ‘the June gap’ which is due to the ‘gap’ in nectar being available for bees to forage on as Spring flowering plants finish and before the summer ones bloom. Due to the late start to Spring this year, Honey bees throughout June have been bringing nectar into the hive and beekeepers have not needed to feed their bees to see them through this ‘gap’ unlike last year. There is a wide range of flowers yielding nectar for the bees such as hawthorn & sycamore with others that will soon be available like the lime and brambles. At this time of year a prominent feature of honey bee husbandry is managing swarms. Swarming is the honey bees way of increasing the population of the species. As the colony size begins to increase the bees may begin to raise new queens. When this happens, the old queen leaves the hive with the older flying bees leaving the younger hive based nurse bees to raise the new queen in the original hive. Beekeepers manage this by carrying out an artificial swarm to convince the bees that they have swarmed, and helps bee keepers retain and expand their stock. When a honey bee swarms, unlike tales of fiction, they do not go on a rampage, but simply are looking for a suitable new home, and the majority of the time will settle in a tree or a bush. The below picture attaches is what a honey bee swarm will look like. If you see a honeybee swarm please contact the KBA secretary who will arrange for a local bee keeper to catch and remove it for you. The majority of the general public will always picture a Bumble bee when bees are mentioned, however a honey bee is more likely to be mistaken for a wasp. To help you distinguish between them, see the below picture. If you are interested in beekeeping for yourself or the whole family. Contact Ian Craig, the KBA Secretary on 01505 322684 or via e-mail beekeeper30@btinternet. com if you would like to know more, or to report any honey bee swarms.

Buddleia [Butterfly Bush] The Buddleia is a fast-growing and undemanding shrub. The long, heavy, colourful flower heads transform the bush and make a stunning display, attracting clouds of butterflies.

Windows on Wildlife!

Hayley Douglas, Project Officer at Castle Semple Country Park, gives us an update for summer.

WoW Event Updates

In April, I was joined by some hardy (some might say foolhardy!) individuals willing to get up before sunrise to see one of Lochwinnoch’s local otters. Unfortunately our early rise didn’t result in an otter sighting, but both mornings were glorious and we saw kingfishers, smew, common sandpipers and otter tracks. The ‘Wee furry beastie trapping session’ in Parkhill Wood managed to live trap some woodmice. We admired and learnt about these wee beasties before safely letting them go. On the Badger Watching sessions, badgers have been present and we also managed to scare an unsuspecting Roe Deer, next dates for this are in August. Did you see me at Hessilhead’s open day or the Kilbarchan Show?

Hear a brief history of the Pollok Fold, then move on to watch a Highland Cow being washed and prepared for the show ring.

Coming up are ‘WoW Wednesdays’ during the s u m m e r holidays for the kids which will involve Wildlife Spy sessions and mammal workshops. If you would like to get involved please phone Castle Semple on 01505 842 882 for more info.

Hayley and furry friends at Hessilhead Open Day.

Our four badgers have been busy going between their main and satellite sett. I’m hoping that some cubs will put in an appearance soon. Everything seems to be running late this year due to the poor weather in May. The Roe Deer in the wood have had their babies and they should be putting in an appearance on camera soon. The delivering of 80 workshops to 16 Primary 5 and 6 classes in Renfrewshire including Lochwinnoch, Kilbarchan and Bridge of Weir Primary is well underway. The children have been watching the footage and learning about wildlife issues in Scotland. They have also been learning about photography and how they can help monitor and record our local wildlife from bees to birds. The children are enjoying the sessions and it’s great to see their knowledge and skills improve each week. As an added incentive we have one of the cameras up A Frog! Taken by local school children. for grabs as a prize for the best newspaper report on a wildlife issue. Looking at the entries already in and it’s going to be a hard decision picking a winner.

pets Slugs and Snails and Puppy Dog Tales It’s not just the start of a children’s rhyme, but a good way to bring up the subject of dogs who have a natural inquisitive nature. Lungworm is present in a proportion of slugs and snails in Scotland right now, and there is a real risk to your dog’s health if he becomes infected. The slug or snail acts as an intermediate host to a developing stage of the worm, and the infective larvae can be found not only in the body of the snail, but in the slimy mucus trail that is left as it moves. Some dogs actively eat slugs and snails out of choice, but other routes of infection include playing with toys which have been contaminated by slugs and snails, and eating grass or drinking from puddles that have been infected. Puddles, unpleasant to us, but did you know that this is the main route by which your dog could catch lungworm? Once infected, these larvae migrate to the heart, laying eggs which hatch out in the lungs of your dog. Coughing, fever, sickness, diarrhoea, and unexplained bruising or bleeding can all be caused by this parasite. Symptoms are varied between dogs, and it can prove difficult to diagnose. Whilst you can’t prevent dogs being interested in these slimy creatures, you can prevent illness by treating regularly with a lungworm killing wormer. Ask your vet about regular treatment today. At PetVets we stock all the wormers and anti-parasitics your pet could need, and are happy to advise on their use and dosing. Give us a call on 01505 800366 today to register your pet and receive free parasite advice.

Dog Fouling - Don’t Put Up With It!

If you own a dog, or are looking after a dog, it is YOUR responsibility to clean up after it. You should always pick waste up and put it in the nearest litter bin. Owners who don’t pick up their dog’s mess and dispose of it properly will face a fine. You can be fined £40 (rising to £60 if not paid within 28 days). You should carry a plastic bag or ‘poop scoop’ with you, clean up every time your dog fouls and teach your dog to go to the toilet in your garden before you leave the house. The message is: Grab It - Always keep a supply of bags near your dog’s lead so you don’t forget to take them with you on every walk. Simply insert your hand in the bag and pick up your dog’s waste. Bag It - Carefully turn the bag inside out to “bag” your dog’s mess. Bin It - Dispose of the bag in a bin. Dog waste can be put in a public litter bin if a specific dog waste bin is not provided. Don’t put up with it - if you see someone allowing their dog to foul a public place such as a park, footpath or green space and fail to clean it up, call Renfrewshire Wardens with information, anonymously, using the contact details below. This information will allow us to target foot patrols in your area more effectively.
