text Federica Repetto What is your relationship with fashion in your everyday life? Fashion has been a part of my daily life since I was a child. I have never been a slave to it, I made it a component that allowed me to express myself and my desire to distinguish myself from others by finding the right combinations, the detail that used in the right way can make even a simple t-shirt unique and special. What should never be missing from a wardrobe? I think of a wardrobe as a bit like a box full of toys to play with, and I believe it should never be missing (mine definitely not) a pair of jeans, a cashmere sweater and a silk top. What is your favourite look? Clothes should make you feel at ease with yourself and your surroundings, so I do not have a particular favourite, even if jeans, a t-shirt and a high heel shoe always manage to make the difference. The secret to being always in fashion? The secret is to always use simple, quality clothes. Mix styles and colours, and always aim for comfort. Dare and discover your own potential without shame or being too judgemental. Is Venice fashion? By its very nature Venice is a fashion runway par excellence, and more or less unconsciously every women plays a leading role. You go out and you are already on the most romantic catwalk in the world, even when there is “acqua alta”.

Qual è il suo rapporto con la moda nella vita di tutti i giorni? Fin da bambina la moda per me è stata un elemento che mi ha accompagnata tutti giorni. Non l’ho mai subìta, l’ho fatta diventare una componente che permettesse di esprimere il mio essere e il volermi distinguere dagli altri cercando l’abbinamento giusto, il dettaglio che, se inserito nel suo modo migliore, riesce a rendere unica e particolare anche una semplice maglietta. Cosa non dovrebbe mai mancare in un guardaroba? L’armadio lo considero un po’ come una scatola piena di balocchi con cui giocare e credo che al suo interno, non debba mai mancare (nel mio sicuramente no) un jeans, un maglioncino in cachemire ed un top in seta. Il suo look preferito? Un capo d’abbigliamento deve farti sentire bene con te stessa e con l’ambiente che ti circonda quindi non ho una preferenza particolare anche se, un jeans, una T-shirt e una calzatura con tacco riescono comunque a fare la loro differenza. Il segreto per essere sempre fashion? Il segreto è usare capi semplici di qualità. Mescolare stili e colori, cercando di non rinunciare mai alla comodità. Osare e scoprire le proprie potenzialità senza vergogna e giudizi troppi rigidi. Venezia è moda? Venezia è per sua natura la passerella per eccellenza della moda, e ogni donna più o meno inconsapevolmente, ne è la protagonista. Esci di casa e, sei già nella sfilata più romantica del mondo, anche con l’acqua alta.

text Federica Repetto When did you become interested in glass-making? While I was waiting to begin restoration of a Dino Martens fresco on Murano, I had the chance to do a course in lampworking. It’s an art that resonated deeply with my passions: the study of traditional materials, techniques and design. What does being a glass designer mean? Studying, understanding and experimenting with the potential of glass, using traditional techniques to create jewellry and objects with a pronounced modern identity. What is the traditional lampwork technique you use to make your jewellry? It consists in using a flame from a torch (lamp) fuelled by a mixture of oxygen and gas which can reach a temperature of 1,000°C. It is only the skill and expertise of the “beadmaker” that turns the drop of glass into beads with different shapes and decorations. What are you main sources of inspiration? The reflections of water under a bridge, the geometric lines of a building, glass objects from the past. The Butterfly collection, winner of the Open Design Italia 2012 Ottagono award, originated from the observation of a tiny bead from the Thirties. What do Venice and Salento have in common? Immediately recognizable reflections and light…

Quando si è avvicinata al mondo del vetro? In attesa di iniziare il restauro di un affresco di Dino Martens a Murano ho avuto l’opportunità di frequentare un corso di lavorazione a lume del vetro. È un mondo che si fondeva incredibilmente con le mie passioni: lo studio dei materiali tradizionali e le tecniche di lavorazione e il design. Cosa significa essere una glass designer? Studiare, conoscere e sperimentare le potenzialità del vetro, utilizzando tecniche tradizionali per creare gioielli ed oggetti con una forte identità contemporanea. Cos’è la tecnica tradizionale del lume che lei utilizza per la realizzazione dei suoi gioielli? Consiste in una fiamma prodotta da un cannello (lume) alimentato da una miscela di ossigeno e gas che può raggiungere i 1.000°C. È solo con l’abilità e la maestria della “perlera” che da questa goccia di vetro si riesce ad ottenere perle con forme e decori diversi. Quali sono le sue principali fonti di ispirazione? Il riverbero dell’acqua sotto un ponte, le geometrie di un’architettura, la produzione in vetro del passato. La collana Butterfly, vincitrice nel 2012 del premio Ottagono durante la Open Design Italia, è nata dall’osservazione di una piccolissima perla degli anni 30. Venezia e Salento cosa hanno in comune? text Federica Repetto Does Venice inspire your works? In an obscure way. I have deep ties to Venice, which like a loving, possessive mother gives you everything and does not let you go. Did you always dream of having this career? I have always needed this expressive outlet, and spending time doing what you really love is priceless. How would you describe your style? There’s delicacy, but also strength in my way of working, and it requires careful observation to capture the details. I made light scratches on the photos of shadows, my latest exhibition, a seemingly iconoclastic gesture that gives new life to the shapes. I imprison slender paper cut-outs of bodies in my snow globes that tell stories of love, sex and possession. What are you working on at the moment? Drawings. I take inspiration from old photos and postcards showing couples poised between normality and restlessness. Which of your projects are you most proud of? I love all the work I have done, but as with lovers, it is the current one that makes your heart beat faster and takes all your attention, yo-yoing between excitement and torment. But when the work is completed, the feeling is unique.

Venezia ispira le sue opere? In modo occulto. Ho un profondo legame con Venezia che come una madre affettuosa e possessiva concede tutto e non ti lascia andare. Ha sempre sognato di fare questa carriera? Ho sempre avuto il bisogno di questo canale espressivo e passare il tempo a fare quello che ti piace davvero è impagabile. Come definisce il suo stile? Nel mio modo di operare c’è delicatezza ma anche forza e richiede sempre un’osservazione attenta per coglierne i particolari. Sulle foto di ombre, la mia ultima mostra, intervengo con leggere incisioni, gesto apparentemente iconoclasta che dona nuova vita alle forme. Nelle mie boules à neige imprigiono esili corpi di carta intagliata che raccontano storie di amori, di sesso e di possesso. A cosa sta lavorando al momento? Disegni. Prendo ispirazione da vecchie foto e cartoline che rappresentano coppie di persone in bilico tra normalità e inquietudine. Tra i suoi progetti di quale va maggiormente fiera? Amo tutti i progetti che ho realizzato ma come per gli amori è quello in corso che fa battere il cuore e prende tutta l’attenzione, un alternarsi di eccitazione e tormento e poi quando il lavoro è compiuto la sensazione è unica.

When did your love of music, and especially the piano, begin? I had the good fortune to have parents who were musicians, and who still play professionally. Edda is one of the first violins in the Teatro La Fenice orchestra, and Ezio, a pianist, is rehearsal accompanist at the Venetian theatre. What do you feel when you play? Playing is a very complex discipline and the emotions you feel during a performance are numerous. If it difficult to give them a name because they are continually changing. What has been your most thrilling experience? It is not necessarily tied to music, but I can say that music accompanies every moment of my life. . Some upcoming performances? I play piano duets with my father. We have recently added Igor Stravinsky’s Le Sacre du printemps to our extensive repertoire, probably the most complex piece we have ever attempted. It will be a way to bring the public closer to a 1913 masterpiece. Is Venice music? Yes. I believe the poetry that daily describes the city of Venice can only be translated with the noble art of Music.

Quando è nata la sua passione per la musica e nello specifico per il pianoforte? Ho avuto la fortuna di avere dei genitori musicisti, che tutt’ora praticano la professione. Edda violinista, tra i primi violini dell’orchestra del Teatro La Fenice ed Ezio pianista, primo Maestro di Sala nel teatro veneziano. Cosa prova quando suona? Suonare è una disciplina molto complessa e le emozioni che si provano durante un’esecuzione sono molteplici. Difficile dar loro un nome perché si rinnovano continuamente. L’esperienza che l’ha maggiormente emozionata? Non è necessariamente legata alla musica. Ma posso dire che la musica accompagna ogni momento della mia vita. Prossimi impegni lavorativi? Con mio padre svolgo un’attività concertistica con il pianoforte a quattro mani. Nel nostro ampio repertorio abbiamo recentemente aggiunto Le Sacre du printemps di Igor Stravinsky, probabilmente il brano più complesso mai affrontato. Un modo per avvicinare il pubblico al capolavoro del 1913. Venezia è musica? Si. La poesia che quotidianamente descrive la città di Venezia credo possa essere tradotta solo con la nobile arte della Musica.

The months of the Biennale offer a sequence of events to be taken with love: installations that rise from the water or descend upon the fields adapt to the pulsing rhythms of the 57th International Art Exhibition, entitled Viva arte viva and curated by Christine Macel, on display at the Giardini and Arsenale until 26 November. As usual, there are numerous appointments that follow the Biennale, starting with the Golden Tower (a golden obelisk) by James Lee Byars, in Campo San Vio and they continue with the evocative installation by Lorenzo Quinn that seems hardly able to hold up Ca’ Sagredo,

titled Support, a gesture against global warming. The work by Michelangelo Pistoletto in the Abbazia di San Giorgio Maggiore is also an installation (included in a greater complex) with an evangelical title, One and One Makes Three. The photographic exhibition by Shirin Neshat at the Museo Correr, The Home of My Eyes, is instead profoundly human, with the artist presenting gestures and expressions captured uniquely in black and white. Jan Fabre’s works on view at the Abbazia di San Gregorio seem to move in quite a different direction, toward reconsideration of the complicated phenomenon of metamorphosis, as explored in the Glass and Bone Sculptures (19772017). The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied, on view at the Fondazione

The Germany Pavilion, winner of the Golden Lion, deserves a special mention: a cage with high screens guarded by two Dobermans (to increase the emotional tension), in which sit young emaciated and frightened bodies, observed by the public as if they were test animals behind glass - they appear to be in search of an internal and physical balance. The New Zealand Pavilion - Tese dell’Isolotto, in the Arsenale – features a 40-meter screen showing the digital animation film about colonialism by Lisa Rehiana. In the French Musical Pavilion, Xavier Veilhan transformed his pavilion in the Giardini into a geometric acoustic, wooden ‘box’, becoming a fully operational recording studio, where music can be made for the duration of the Biennale. Last but not least is the Mongolia Pavilion, at the Istituto Santa Maria della Pietà: amidst thousand-year-old shamanic traditions and awareness for environmental protection, contemporary Mongolian art is an interesting surprise. ITALY PAVILION The Italy Pavilion, curated by the amazing Cecilia Alemani, portrays The Magic World, with Roberto Cuoghi, Adelita Husni-Bey and Giorgio Andreotta Calò, three artists that have created interventions that are at once unique and complementary. The pavilion contains perhaps one of the most beautiful works in this year’s Biennale: The Imitation of Christ by Roberto Cuoghi, which opens the Italian exhibition. The organic matter and spiritual references of Adelita Husni-Bey follow, with The Reading / La Seduta, in which the artist presents the “language” of video and that of sculpture side-by-side. Finally, the submerged and overturned world of Giorgio Andreotta Calò, with an environmental aspect, plays a prominent role. WORKS NOT TO MISS The Light Sweeper. It’s like dust, but it’s light; it’s as if it were a rug, but it’s a white rectangle: it’s One Thousand and One Night, in the Arsenale, the work by Belgian artist Edith Dekyndt. The piece features someone who sweeps for 8 hours a day, without a break. The Hammock. The piece comes all the way from the Philippines and it is the designed by David Medalla, but it’s a work in progress as well: many hands, those of the visitors, who, with a needle and string, can leave a trace of their visit. Large, white hands, 12 meters long, dug into the Grand Canal, each one weighing 2,500 kg. The hands hold up Ca’ Sagredo against the risks that Venice runs every day, from sinking like the lost Atlantis to dying without that water that has made it a masterpiece of architecture throughout the centuries. Support is the installation striking the imaginations of visitors to the Lagoon city and it is a powerful reflection that Lorenzo Quinn (sculptor and actor like his father Anthony) calls on us to make on the hot-button question of global warming and on the protection of world heritage, which the Serenissima most certainly is. Finding art along the streets and canals is spontaneous and there are numerous spaces hosting programs, installations and initiatives of great beauty until November 26, like the Golden Tower by James Lee Byars in Campo San Vio. The 20-meter high obelisk covered in 35,500 24-karat gold leaves is a tribute to the deceased artist and his love for Venice and is a demonstration of the value of Italian craftsmanship. Meanwhile, a reflection on man and the increasingly complex present can be found in Michelangelo Pistoletto’s installation One and One makes Three in the Abbey of San Giorgio Maggiore. In this sacred and ancient place, a circle of mirrors – facing each other, forcing vistors to look inside themselves and consider themselves in relation to others – invites each visitor that accepts to become a work of art and thought for a profound and silent reflection. The Galleria d’Arte Contini is hosting The Luminous Details the solo show by Manolo Valdès, an eclectic and versatile artist and one of the most important maestri of the 21st century. The exhibition brings together his recent creations, wonderful large-scale paintings and collages, evocative sculptures with feminine faces, equestrian statues and other subjects, made in aluminium, bronze, iron, wood and alabaster. There are around 40 works, including some of the most important ones of his 56 Venezia | made in Veneto

There is a particular attention on dimension in the retrospective dedicated to Alighiero Boetti, held at the Fondazione Giorgio Cini: Minimum/Maximum is the program that invites the visitor to immerse themselves in works that are presented in two sizes (minimum and maximum, as the title goes), totally respecting the principle according to which everything contains its own opposite and that in the flags that become maps, the visitor can find an iconography that has been unknown to them. The graphic-political insight of Boetti is certainly not the only one in Venice, and the aspects of this theme are the focus of an exhibition at Palazzo Fortuny, which brings together artefacts of the past and ancient works, as well as modern and contemporary pieces, organized in a way that traces through time and space that form of knowledge that cannot be explained with words but which offer deep certainties. In the rooms of Intuition, visitors encounter Neolithic menhir and works by Kandinskij, as well as automatic writing and installations by Marina Abramovic, uninterrupted, just like the intuitions of art over the centuries. Out of a shared and constant reflection comes the project that occupies the ground floor and two upper floors of the Fondazione Prada, The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied. This multimedia exhibition is the result of a fruitful collaboration between the writer and director Alexander Kluge, the artist Thomas Demand, the scenographer and costume designer Anna Viebrock and the curator Udo Kittelmann. A collection of videos and artworks, installations and ample spaces offers the possibility for meeting and communicating between men and women capable of questioning themselves and the present.

L’intuizione grafico-politica di Boetti non è certo l’unica presente a Venezia, poiché agli aspetti di questo tema nell’arte è dedicata l’esposizione a Palazzo Fortuny, che raccoglie artefatti del passato e opere antiche, ma anche moderne e contemporanee, organizzate in modo da disegnare nel tempo e nello spazio quella forma di conoscenza che non si spiega a parole ma che dà certezze profonde. Nelle sale di Intuition, dunque, s’incontrano menhir del Neolitico e opere di Kandinskij, testi di scrittura automatica e installazioni di Marina Abramovic, senza soluzioni di continuità proprio come le intuizioni d’arte nei secoli. Da una riflessione condivisa e costante è nato invece il progetto che occupa il piano terra e i due piani nobili della Fondazione Prada, che presenta The Boat is Leaking. The Captain Lied, esposizione transmediale, frutto della felice collaborazione tra lo scrittore e regista Alexander Kluge, l’artista Thomas Demand, la scenografa e costumista Anna Viebrock e il curatore Udo Kittelmann. Un sommarsi di video e opere, installazioni e spazi ampi offre la possibilità dell’incontro e della comunicazione per uomini e donne ancora capaci di interrogarsi sul sé e sul presente. Anti-divo, or perhaps the biggest divo of all. James Franco is one of America’s most eccentric, eclectic movie stars. He played Seam Penn’s lover in Milk, the biopic about gay rights activist Harvey Milk, is a cult indie movie actor and the director of very personal films. And he also played the lead in the blockbuster Rise of the Planet of the Apes. In Venice last September, James Franco appeared with a Western hero-style moustache. In 2016, Franco presented In Dubious Battle, the film he directed based on John Steinbeck’s novel of the same name, at the Venice Film Festival. The film is a drama set during the Great Depression, and Franco plays the part of an activist for the American Communist Party who infiltrates the ranks of Californian apple pickers to organize their protests against wage cuts. Mr Franco, how did this project come about? “In 2014 I played in Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men on Broadway, and took the opportunity to re-read all of his novels. This resulted in a great urge to make a film adaptation of one of his books, and In Dubious Battle seemed to be a novel full of strong characters. It is one of Steinbeck’s lesser known works, but extremely cinematic”. A novel that seems topical and relevant to today’s social injustices… “It’s true; the references to workplace injustices are very topical. The film is set in the Thirties and tells of clashes between day labourers and landowners, but it could apply to any conflict, any labour injustice in our times.” During the presidential election campaign you did not hide your preference for Hillary Clinton, and en-

Era l’amante di Sean Penn nel biopic gay Milk; è attore cult di film indipendenti, regista di film molto personali. Poi lo troviamo in blockbuster come L’alba del pianeta delle scimmie. A Venezia, il settembre scorso, James Franco si è presentato con un paio di baffoni da eroe western. Nel 2016 ha presentato sempre a Venezia un film da regista, In Dubious Battle, ispirato al romanzo di John Steinbeck La battaglia. Il film è un dramma ambientato durante la Grande Depressione americana. Franco interpreta un rappresentante del partito comunista americano che si infiltra tra i raccoglitori di mele della California per guidare le loro proteste contro il taglio dei salari. Signor Franco, come è nato questo progetto? “Nel 2014 ho interpretato, a Broadway, Uomini e topi da Steinbeck. Per l’occasione, ho riletto tutti i suoi romanzi. Mi è venuto un grande desiderio di girare un film tratto da un suo libro: La battaglia mi sembrava un romanzo pieno di personaggi forti. È un romanzo meno noto di Steinbeck, ma molto cinematografico”. Un romanzo che sembra parlare di attualità, delle ingiustizie sociali del presente… “I richiami alle ingiustizie sul lavoro sono molto attuali, è vero. Il film è ambientato negli anni Trenta del Novecento, e racconta le lotte fra i braccianti e i proprietari terrieri. Ma può valere per ogni conflitto, per ogni ingiustizia sul lavoro nel nostro presente.” Durante la campagna per le elezioni presidenziali, lei non ha nascosto la sua preferenza per Hillary Clinton, invitando gli americani a votare per lei. “Sì: se credo in qualcosa, cerco anche di stimolare le Venezia | made in Veneto 63

couraged Americans to vote for her. “Yes, if I believe in something I try to incite people to go in that direction. I wish I had been able to use words as effectively as Steinbeck would have – he certainly would never have voted for Trump! But all political leaders lack real concern for the working classes”. Actor, director, musician in your spare time. Do you actually have any free time? “Not really. I met some of my high school buddies a while ago, almost all of them are married and have kids. There and then I thought I’d like to have a family one day, but with the rhythm I’m into now, it wouldn’t be easy. I work a lot, at a frantic pace, because you’re always afraid that what you do and what you love won’t last, there won’t be a next time”. Working as if there’s no tomorrow and verging on provocation, perhaps. As in 2014, when James Franco appeared in a 70’s-style suit, his head completely shaven and wearing an enormous pair of dark Ray-Bans. And he did something no-one else would dare to – while attending the premier of his adaptation of Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury, James Franco turned the red carpet into the set for another film. Sporting Liz Taylor and Montgomery Clift tattoos on the back of his shaven head, he filmed a scene for his latest project, Zeroville, a film which has mysteriously vanished without trace. Also last September he didn’t miss the chance to get the paparazzi working and send them away happy – grabbing a banana, he pretended to shoot the crowd with it. He knows it’s essential to put on a show. And speaking of more serious things, let’s see what he knows and what he loves about Italy. Is there an Italian director you’d like to work with? And is there a writer you admire? “I’d like to work with Paolo Sorrentino. Does that go without saying? And a writer I find brilliant is Elena Ferrante. Whoever she is, she’s managed to build a career without becoming a slave to promotion, publicity or the need to appear. Ma adesso sono dentro questo ritmo, non sarà una cosa facile. Lavoro tanto, freneticamente, perché si teme sempre che quello che si fa e che si ama fare non duri, non abbia seguito”. Lavorare come se non ci fosse un domani. Sul filo della provocazione, magari. Come nel 2014, quando James Franco si era presentato completamente rasato, in pieno look anni ’70, con un paio di enormi Ray-Ban scuri. E aveva fatto una cosa che nessuno aveva osato: mentre faceva la passerella per presentare The Sound and the Fury, tratto da Faulkner, James Franco aveva trasformato la passerella nel set di altro un film. Tutto rasato, con un vistosissimo tatuaggio sulla testa che raffigurava Liz Taylor e Montgomery Clift, si era fatto filmare per la scena del film che stava dirigendo, Zeroville. Film di cui misteriosamente si sono perse le tracce. E anche lo scorso settembre, non si è lasciato sfuggire un’occasione per fare lavorare i paparazzi, e farli tornare via contenti: ha impugnato una banana, e si è messo a sparare sulla folla. Lo sa, che fare spettacolo è necessario. E parlando di cose più serie, cerchiamo di capire che cosa sa e che cosa ama dell’Italia. C’è un regista italiano col quale vorrebbe lavorare? O uno scrittore che apprezza? “Mi piacerebbe lavorare con Paolo Sorrentino. Troppo ovvio? E fra gli autori di libri, trovo geniale Elena Ferrante. Chiunque sia, è riuscita a crearsi una carriera senza diventare schiava della promozione, della pubblicità, dell’obbligo di apparire. Fra i film italiani degli ultimi anni, Gomorra è quello che mi ha impressionato di più”.

i and La ibute of Pless The mutual tr hibition ex or summer Fenice: a maj si e La es Pl a tr o aggi Il reciproco om state l’e r ande mostra pe Fenice: una gr It should have been a tribute from Venice to its great maestro, but it has become a tribute by Fabrizio Plessi to La Fenice. “I’ve had 500 solo shows and exhibitions in 137 museums,” he explains to us, gracefully revealing figures that would make heads spin, “but I was so flattered by the opportunity that my adopted city offered me that I wanted to do something new: take on a new challenge without copying myself.” At the center of Fenix Dna are the main elements in Plessi’s art, fire and water, to which he has added - for the first time in his career - an external element: white plaster casts, negatives of theatre decorations that represent the great historical memory of these places. La Fenice reciprocates this great tribute, entrusting Fabrizio with its space until August, when performances are not being staged. Plessi’s video installations invade the Venetian theatre with all its energy: an exhibition itinerary through the rooms of the Theatre made of light, sounds and audio-video installations. How did you come up with the idea to use white plaster casts are enveloped in water and fire? These plaster casts represent the ancient soul of La Fenice, they recount its tenacious and endless rebirth, in fierce contrast with the black ashes on the ground, which symbolize our insecurities. Some months ago, I visited the La Fenice’s storages in search of a new idea for a project. It was a real flash of inspiration: I created this white sea that became the background of my works, or rather, an integral part of them. Al centro di Fenix Dna, la grande mostra dell’estate a La Fenice di Venezia, gli elementi primari dell’ arte di Plessi: il fuoco e l’acqua, a cui si aggiunge - per la prima volta nella storia dell’artista – un elemento esterno: dei gessi bianchi, negativi delle decorazioni del teatri che rappresentano la grande memoria storica di questi luoghi. La Fenice ricambia questo grande omaggio affidando a Fabrizio i suoi spazi a fino al 6 agosto, nel periodo di chiusura delle rappresentazioni. Le installazioni video di Plessi invadono con tutta la loro energia l’interno del teatro veneziano: un percorso itinerante nelle sale del Teatro fatto di luci, suoni e installazioni audio-video. Come è nata l’idea dei gessi bianchi che emergono dalla cenere e sono avvolti da acqua e fuoco? Questi gessi rappresentano l’antica anima de La Fenice, raccontano la sua ostinata e infinita rinascita, in feroce contrasto con la cenere nera a terra a simboleggiare le nostre insicurezze. Ho visitato qualche mese fa per la prima volta i magazzini de La Fenice alla ricerca di una idea inedita per il progetto. “The exhibition is a tribute to the Theatre where I got my intellectual education and to the city”

represent its endless ability to reproduce itself, its energy. The ashes on the ground create, on the other hand, a sense of instability, insecurity in the journey. Water, fire, ashes follow one another in an extraordinary replay… do they scare you or reassure you? It’s our world, a continuous flow in eternal movement. The plaster casts represent Reason and historic memory, which he grasp onto: we walk around Reason to find ourselves, castaways of the culture of today. A complete work, Wagner-like, in which music also plays an important role… They are electronic acoustics, atavistic, primordial; everything must arrive from the black hole of time. Everything unravels and gets lost over and over again. What does Venice and La Fenice mean to you? I’m Emilian, I came here to study at the Accademia Di Belle Arti and I stayed because Venice is like no other place. Here, everything is fluid, mobile, elastic. It’s my city and it’s changed me. As for La Fenice, it marked my intellectual growth, where I saw extraordinary things: Pina Bausch, Bob Wilson, Vedova’s scenographies for Intolleranza ’60 by Luigi Nono. What is your next project? Something that I’m very proud of: a major retrospective at the Pushkin Museum in Moscow. anzi parte integrante delle stesse. Essendo i negativi delle decorazioni del Teatro, rappresentano la sua infinita capacità di riprodursi, la sua energia. La cenere a terra crea invece un senso di instabilità, di insicurezza nel percorso… quella a cui ci ha abituato il mondo contemporaneo. Acqua, fuoco, cenere si susseguono in uno straordinario replay… Le fa paura o la rassicura? E’ il nostro mondo, un flusso continuo in eterno movimento, in cui siamo naufraghi. I gessi rappresentano la Ragione e la Storia cui ci aggrappiamo: per ritrovare noi stessi, naufraghi della cultura di oggi. Un’opera totale, wagneriana , in cui ha un ruolo importante anche la musica… Sono sonorità elettroniche, ataviche, primordiali; tutto deve arrivare dal buco nero del tempo. Tutto si dipana e si perde all’infinito. Sono firmate da Giovanni Sparano, è la nostra prima collaborazione. Cosa rappresentano per lei Venezia e La Fenice? Sono emiliano, sono arrivato qui per frequentare l’Accademia Di Belle Arti e mi sono fermato perché Venezia era diversa da tutte le altre. È un luogo dove tutto è fluido, mobile, elastico. È la mia città, mi ha cambiato. La Fenice è stato invece il luogo della mia crescita intellettuale, dove ho visto cose straordinarie: Pina Bausch, Bob Wilson, le scenografie di Vedova per Intolleranza ’60 di Luigi Nono. Il suo prossimo progetto? Una cosa che mi rende molto fiero: una grande retrospettiva al Museo Puškin di Mosca.

The works of the great artist at the new Project Rooms of Peggy Guggenheim Collection Le opere del grande artista nelle nuove Project Rooms della Collezione Peggy Guggenheim Exciting things are happening at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice this summer. are In June, Philip Rylands, the collection’s first director and its leader for 37 years, handed over the reins to Karole Vail, who is not only Peggy’s granddaughter, but also an internationally appreciated contemporary art historian. At the end of August, the museum’s Project Rooms, two new rooms for exhibition projects with a special focus, will host an exhibition-dossier dedicated to Pablo Picasso (1881-1973): a new adventure designed to take an indepth look at the Spanish artist’s techniques and stories. The show gathers a selection of ten drawings, three paintings and a sculpture, made by Picasso between February and December 1937, a period full of significance for the eclectic artist. We are in the period of Guernica, of the painting and of the destruction of the little town in devastating bombardments by forces backing the Francoist cause. It was the artist’s most intense period of civic engagement. However, Luca Massimo Barbero, curator of Picasso. On the Beach (from 26 August 2017 to 7 January 2018) has chosen to focus more on the stylistic aspect. Picasso’s bathers in the painting La Baignade, now part of the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, painted 17 years after his playful Three Bathers of 1920, create an almost intimate scene formed by two large, soft and brilliant figures playing with a toy boat. Also in the exhibition is Grande Baigneuse au livre, the immense figure of a woman seated on the beach, blanched by the hot light of the southern sun, an effect accentuated by the white pastel Picasso made wide use of at the time, creating painted figures that seem like sculptures. Barbero highlights his connection with the sea, the Mediterranean, and his rounded figures recall the fertility goddesses of Malta, which stands at the crossroads of Mediterranean cultures. The exhibition is a chance to reflect on this universally known but not always fully understood artist. 88 Venezia | made in Veneto

Estate ricca di novità per la Collezione Peggy Guggenheim di Venezia. Se a giugno, dopo 37 anni, il direttore storico Philip Rylands ha passato il testimone a Karole Vail, non solo nipote di Peggy ma anche una delle storiche di arte contemporanea più apprezzate a livello internazionale, a fine agosto le Project Rooms, due nuove sale del museo dedicate a progetti espositivi raccolti e mirati, ospitano una mostradossier dedicata a Pablo Picasso (1881-1973): una nuova avventura destinata ad approfondire tecniche e storie dell’artista spagnolo. La mostra ripercorre poco meno di un anno di attività, tra febbraio e dicembre del 1937, ma carico di significato per l’eclettico artista. Tre dipinti, dieci disegni e una scultura. Siamo nel periodo che ruota attorno a Guernica, al dipinto e al bombardamento che nel ‘37 distrusse la cittadina da parte delle forze falangiste che appoggiavano Franco. È il periodo più intenso, per impegno civile, dell’artista. Ma la scelta di Luca Massimo Barbero, curatore della mostra Picasso. Sulla spiaggia (dal 26 agosto 2017 al 7 gennaio 2018) punta più sull’aspetto stilistico. Picasso con le sue bagnanti, protagoniste del dipinto Sulla spiaggia oggi alla Collezione Peggy Guggenheim, ed esposto in occasione della mostra, realizzate a distanza di 17 anni da quelle giocose del 1920, ripropone un angolo quasi intimo, formato da due grandi figure, morbide e brillanti, che giocano con una barchetta. Ancora, in mostra, una donna immensa, protagonista della tela Grande bagnante che legge un libro, sbiancata dalla luce calda del sole del sud, effetto accentuato dall’uso del gesso di cui Picasso al tempo fa largo uso, offrendo figure dipinte che sembrano sculture. Barbero lo ferma in quel suo rapportarsi al mare, al Mediterraneo. Tanto che le sue tonde figure ci rimandano alle dee della fertilità maltesi incrocio di culture mediterranee appunto. L’occasione per riflettere su questo artista universalmente noto, ma non sempre pienamente capito.

Così si ritrovano quei tratti dai colori accesi che hanno caratterizzato gli ultimi anni della sua attività quando ha iniziato a praticare iPod e iPad usandoli come blocchi di schizzi e perfino tele. Ci si ritrova quella costanza nel rappresentare con maniacale insistenza gli stessi scorci di campagna, d’inverno, d’estate o di primavera e poi rimbalzati su grande formato così da farci risucchiare all’interno. “…he thought that arriving in Venice from the train station was like entering a palace through the servants’ entrance and that one should always, like himself, travel across the ocean to the most improbable of cities.” Thomas Mann wrote this triumphant prose, almost whispering with words about that pleasant turmoil of emotion growing in the soul. The traveler realizes that he is crossing that invisible threshold that separates daily life from the heart-wrenching timelessness of the city of Doges. From there from the sea, another German voice knocks on the door of memory, Goethe: Venice, “That great creature, sprouted from the sea like Athena from the head of Jupiter”. And it is so true. The best way to see and experience Venice in its greatest splendor is from the water. A unique city in the world, built on 117 islets, connected to each other by 354 bridges, which serve to cross 177 rivers and canals, these latter are the viable pathways in a city surrounded by the lagoon and unique in the world for this characteristic. Gondolas and boats float between the rivers and canals, from which one can glimpse tidelines that appear to come and go in subtly changing colors, respecting the one ways, no access, and mooring restriction. On Saturday 24 and Sunday 25 June, Venice will host the V Principality of Monaco Trophy for period sailing craft in the Venice Lagoon, Banca Generali Special Cup, promoted and organised by Anna Licia Balzan, Honorary Consul to the Principality of Monaco in Venice with the support of Banca Generali and in collaboration with the Italian Navy. “The winning combination Principality of Monaco and sport, which Prince Albert II has always promoted in first person, leads me to promote initiatives such as these, which on a par with culture, tourism and the economy, represent a unique instrument to strengthen the links between our two territories, so alike in our traditions and united by a common denominator - our love for the sea”, said the Consul. In the breathtaking setting of the Lagoon, these wonderful jewels of the sea will challenge each other under the direction of Mirko Sguario, founder of Yacht Club Venezia and promoter of renowned regattas. Sunday’s award ceremony will be held at Marina Sant’Elena, when prizes created for the occasion by Venini, will be awarded to the first three classified in each of the four categories in competition. It is the third time that Venice has won the cup: the last time was 74 years ago. For the captain Tomas Ress on the other hand it is the seventh league title. Nearly 38 years old, the forward-center from Salorno has not lost his hunger for success. How was it to win the first championship with Reyer after Siena? Exciting, because Siena was ready to win when I arrived. With Venice on the other hand I arrived two years ago and we had to build a project. By winning the title this way I feel that it is much more personal. What was the strength of the team? We have always helped each other in times of difficulty, so I think the group is the key to everything. Do you still need experienced players then? An experienced player helps, but you need the young legs and the recklessness of some players who may play in a much lighter way in certain situations. Sometimes it is better to be inexperienced and go on instinct. I think Reyer had a nice mix of many of these things. Reyer is the champion of Italy, but will not play the Euroleague: such a shame. Of course! Because it is the first time in history that a situation of this type has arisen. But we are proud to be one of the top four teams in the Champions League or the Final Eight of the Italian Cup. Taliercio is small, do you need a new facility? Absolutely. In Germany and France are the most beautiful and newer sports halls. Let’s hope a new Sports Hall will be built soon. How is celebrating the Win in Piazza San Marco and Grand Canal? It is a unique city, a World Heritage Site. In other cities, you go to the main square or the town center. In Venice you go to Piazza San Marco and then come back on a gondola. You can do this in Venice, a city where you can experience unique emotions. Who do you dedicate this win to? To my family and particularly to my wife. Next year will Reyer try to win again? Of course we will, and we must always try again!

L’Umana Reyer ha vinto lo scudetto (della serie A) di basket superando in finale Trento. Per Venezia è il terzo tricolore della storia: l’ultimo era arrivato 74 anni fa. Per il capitano Tomas Ress si tratta invece del settimo scudetto. Con quasi 38 primavere sulle spalle, l’ala-pivot di Salorno non ha perso la sua fame di successi. Com’è stato vincere il primo scudetto con la Reyer dopo Siena? Emozionante, soprattutto perché Siena era già pronta per vincere quando sono arrivato. Invece a Venezia sono arrivato due anni fa e si è costruito un progetto. Vincere così il titolo lo sento molto più mio. Qual è stata la forza della squadra? Ci siamo sempre aiutati anche nei momenti di difficoltà, penso che il gruppo sia la chiave di tutto. Serve ancora il giocatore di esperienza quindi? Il giocatore di esperienza aiuta, però ci vogliono le gambe giovani e l’incoscienza di alcuni player che magari giocano molto più leggeri in certe situazioni. Qualche volta è meglio essere poco esperto e andare più d’istinto. Penso che la Reyer abbia avuto un bel mix di tutto questo. Reyer, campione d’Italia, ma non disputerà l’Eurolega: un peccato. Sicuro! Perché è la prima volta che si verifica una situazione così. Però siamo orgogliosi di essere arrivati nelle prime quattro squadre nella coppa della Champions League e alla Final Eight di Coppa Italia. Taliercio piccolo, serve un nuovo impianto? Assolutamente sì. In Germania e in Francia ci sono palazzetti più belli e più nuovi. Speriamo che il Palazzetto dello Sport si faccia presto. Com’è festeggiare lo scudetto in piazza San Marco e Canal Grande? È una città unica, un patrimonio mondiale. Nelle altre città si va in piazza o in centro, a Venezia si va in piazza San Marco e poi si torna in gondola. Solo a Venezia si può fare questo, una città dove è possibile vivere emozioni uniche. Today, this wall is nothing more than physical, as these two apparently distant realities – a historic five-star hotel and a synergic garden – have formed a partnership that goes beyond the mere supply of quality agricultural products, and one that adheres closely to the values of environmental sustainability. The FUD, the Fattoria Urbana Diffusa, founded ten years ago by Michele Savorgnano, will this year expand beyond the wall and into the gardens of the Belmond Hotel Cipriani. Here, on the raised flowerbeds, grow the vegetables that will later feature on the menu of Davide Bisetto, hand-picked by the starred chef himself. The collaboration between Bisetto and Savorgnano began with the chef’s arrival at the Oro Restaurant of the Belmond Hotel, which two years ago gained its first Michelin Star. In fact, Davide Bisetto has always carefully chosen the Farm’s freshest vegetables and edible flowers for his spectacular dishes. It is not unusual to find either of the two dining with other nature enthusiasts, artists or farmers, just a few steps away from the growing crops. The crops, while remaining loyal to the Venetian tradition, also take inspiration from permaculture and the concept of natural agriculture from Masanobu Fukuoka, growing in earth that is never ploughed nor fertilized, but only fully covered by a single layer of organic substance. Hence, in these few hundred square meters operates an ecosystem that seems to encapsulate most of the Laguna’s biodiversity, with more than 300 of its annual and perennial plants. It is an estate that the Belmond Hotel Cipriani wanted to share with its guests, even the youngest ones, to whom it will be dedicated a little vegetable garden near the Kids Club. FUD, la Fattoria Urbana Diffusa, fondata da Michele Savorgnano ormai dieci anni fa, da quest’anno si allarga oltre il muro espandendosi anche nei giardini del Belmond Hotel Cipriani, dove in aiuole rialzate vengono coltivate verdure per la preparazione dei menu di Davide Bisetto, che lo chef stellato ama raccogliere personalmente. La collaborazione tra Bisetto e Savorgnano è iniziata sin dall’arrivo dello chef all’Oro Restaurant del Belmond Hotel Cipriani, che ha conquistato due anni fa la prima Stella Michelin; da sempre infatti Davide Bisetto sceglie i fiori eduli e le verdure più fresche della Fattoria per i suoi spettacolari piatti. Non è difficile trovare i due mangiare insieme ad altri appassionati della natura, artisti o contadini, a pochi passi dalle coltivazioni, le quali guardano alla tradizione veneziana, ma allo stesso tempo si ispirano alla permacultura e, seguendo il pensiero dell’agricoltura naturale di Masanobu Fukuoka, crescono in un terreno che non viene mai arato, né concimato, ma soltanto coperto totalmente da uno strato di sostanza organica. In queste poche centinaia di metri quadri è nato dunque un ecosistema che probabilmente racchiude in sé la maggior biodiversità in laguna, contando oltre 300 tipi di piante fra annuali e perenni. Un patrimonio che il Belmond Hotel Cipriani ha voluto condividere con i suoi ospiti, anche i più piccini, a cui sarà dedicato un piccolo orto vicino al Kids Club, dove sarà possibile insegnare ai bambini la bellezza della semina, accompagnandoli in percorsi interattivi alla ricerca di un maggiore e più autentico contatto con la natura.

Venetian cuisine is a heritage that still lives on in the city’s typical restaurants La cucina veneziana è un patrimonio che ancora vive nei ristoranti tipici della città Exploring Venetian cuisine and learning the origin of the dishes often means taking a journey through its complex and fascinating history, which begins in the native islands - the first settlements in the Lagoon - and it develops through the travels of merchants and the Serenissima Repubblica up to the eighteenth-century Austrian domination. For centuries, Venice has been the true crossroads of trade between East and West, which is why its culinary tradition includes a variety of dishes related to the various provenances of the ingredients. That is why on Venetian tables we find baccalà from the Baltic routes, precious spices from Asian caravans, but also the fresh vegetables of the estuary islands, fish from the lagoon and wild game. We tried to create an ideal menu of some typical Venetian dishes with a selection of local venues that still interpret these traditions to the fullest. From trattorias to the most refined restaurants, our journey begins with the appetizers, for which Venice is a master. Leaving aside the classic ‘cicheti’ to taste at the counter, where you can enjoy the baccalà mantecato with polenta, we offer you three dishes that you can taste practically only in Venice. The most original is probably fried moeca, crab caught in molting season when it is without its carapace and therefore soft (hence the name moeca); we tasted it at Ristorante Al Covo, managed since 1987 by chef Cesare Benelli and his wife Diane, assisted in the kitchen by Paolo Semeraro. Abbiamo provato a creare un menù ideale di alcuni piatti tipici veneziani attraverso una selezione di esercizi locali, che ancora interpretano al meglio queste tradizioni. Dalla trattoria al ristorante più raffinato, il nostro viaggio comincia con gli antipasti, che a Venezia la fanno da padrone. Tralasciando i classici ‘cicheti’ da gustare al banco, dove trionfa il baccalà mantecato con la polenta, vi proproniamo tre piatti che potete assaggiare praticamente soltanto a Venezia.
