Now a designer as well as a sports journalist. How did this adventure get started?

It started with my remembering a friend who unfortunately lost his life in an air show. His passion was flying and so I decided to remember him with my great passion, fashion. From there, I took some courses, then decided to create a line of evening and cocktail dresses and to organize my first show.

What are you particularly proud of?

I am really proud of having created a group of wonderful people who are continuing to sustain me. They are my fantastic models who are really world-class athletes because the purpose of every show of mine is to raise funds for charitable associations.

What inspires you for your creations?

For my creations, I take my inspiration from a woman who wants to take risks. I believe that clothes have the power to make you dream and transform yourself.

Why does fashion intrigue you?

I have always been impressed by the world of fashion precisely because of its power of transformation. We women let ourselves be influenced. Our state of mind often influences how we dress. That’s why I try to create bright cheerful dresses that represent me.

What do wish for your city, Venice?

Just one word: respect.

Non solo giornalista sportiva ma anche stilista. Come è iniziata questa avventura?

E’ iniziata ricordando un amico che purtroppo ci ha lasciato durante un’esibizione aerea. La sua passione era il volo e così ho deciso di ricordarlo con quella che è la mia grande passione ovvero la moda. Da qui dopo aver frequentato dei corsi ho deciso di creare una linea di abiti da sera e da cocktail e di organizzare la mia prima sfilata.

Quale il progetto che La riempie di orgoglio?

Essere riuscita a creare un gruppo di persone splendide che continuano ad affiancarmi. Si tratta delle mie fantastiche modelle che in realtà sono atlete di calibro internazionale perché lo scopo di ogni mia sfilata è quello di raccogliere fondi per varie associazioni benefiche.

A chi si ispira per le sue creazioni?

A una donna che ha voglia di osare.

Perchè la affascina il mondo della moda?

Sono sempre stata abbagliata dal mondo della moda proprio per il potere di trasformazione.

Come vorrebbe fosse la sua Venezia Una sola parola: rispettata.

When were you introduced to this art?

Glassmaking has always fascinated me for its magical and alchemistic qualities. The transformation of the material in the capable hands of the masters on Murano left me speechless, but full of a great desire to learn about it. That was at the same time as the Abate Zanetti International Glass School was opened on Murano. Despite some initial difficulties with being accepted, I began to follow the courses.

Who were your masters?

I want to cite several masters who contributed to my education. I want to thank Davide Salvadori and Pino Signoretto for the good advice and the support they gave me. To Vittorio Costantini on the other hand, my thanks for his small animals that have been a source of inspiration for me.

Why do you make the pearls only?

For me, learning to make glass was like learning a new expressive language, in addition to painting and music. My pearls are like tales of voyages, of meetings and life’s experiences. No two pearls are the same as any other and each one will encounter the person who will select it among a Niang Moulaye. Born in Senegal, thousand. art and passion have made him a Venetian Your idea of Venice.

Quando si è avvicinato a questa professione?

La lavorazione del vetro mi ha sempre affascinato per quel suo aspetto magico e alchemico, la trasformazione della materia nelle capaci mani dei maestri muranesi mi lasciava incredulo e con una grande voglia di apprendere. Nello stesso momento apriva a Murano la Scuola internazionale del vetro Abate Zanetti e, nonostante qualche difficoltà per essere ammesso, ho preso parte ai corsi.

Quali sono stati i suoi maestri?

Nella mia formazione voglio citare alcuni maestri. Davide Salvadori e Pino Signoretto li ringrazio per i validi consigli ed il sostegno che mi hanno riservato. Vittorio Costantini invece per i suoi animaletti che sono stati fonte per me di ispirazione.

Perchè lavorare le perle e non altro?

Imparare a lavorare il vetro è stato per me entrare in possesso di un nuovo linguaggio espressivo, oltre alla pittura e alla musica. Le mie perle sono racconti di viaggio, di incontri e di esperienze di vita... Nessuna perla è uguale all’altra ed ognuna incontrerà la sua persona che la sceglierà tra mille...

Un suo pensiero su Venezia?

Venezia è per me un luogo dell’anima.

Your life is split between Paris and Venice. Which of the two cities do you love more?

Paris is a “ville-lumière”, cosmopolitan. Venice is a miracle, a challenge to the world! There is magic in every moment here, a phenomenal potency that rests on a fragile balance. It is a bridge connecting the East and the West. A prophetic city, timeless.

You and your husband, Nicolas Arnita, are known for organizing the most wonderful parties during Venetian Carnival.

More than hosting great parties, we wish to promote the cultural essence of Venice’s Carnival and the city itself.

What made you choose to come live in Venice?

When it’s a case of love at first sight, one cannot really say it was a choice. It’s a long, wild story going back more than twenty years..

What do you recommend Parisians see when they visit our city?

I would say to anyone to forget everything, allow a space to be filled with the effects of light on this stone frieze on water, to let yourself be enchanted, to lose yourself. From morning to evening, be dizzy from so much beauty.

Venice is to you....

A witch, or rather Venice bewitches me. I could not leave this city even if I wanted to. I am viscerally, fundamentally connected to this island of mine.

Lei è nota insieme a suo marito, Nicolas Arnita, per aver realizzato le feste più belle del Carnevale di Venezia.

Non cerchiamo solo di fare bellissime feste ma cerchiamo sempre di promuovere l’essenza della cultura del Carnevale di Venezia e della città..

Coma mai ha scelto di venire a vivere a Venezia?

Quando si tratta di colpo di fulmine, non si parla proprio di scelta. E’ una lunga e pazza storia che risale a più di vent’anni fa.

Cosa consiglia di vedere ad un parigino in arrivo nella nostra città?

A chiunque, di dimenticare tutto per lasciare uno spazio che possa riempire gli effetti della luce su questo fregio di pietra sull’acqua, di lasciarsi incantare, di perdersi. Alla mattina o alla sera ubriachi di tanta bellezza.

Venezia per Lei è ....

Una strega anzi Venezia mi strega. Anche se volessi abbandonare la città, non lo potrei fare. Sono visceralmente, essenzialmente attaccata a questa mia isola.

Ivo Natali made history in the city with his restaurant.

He had started in Tuscany as a chef in Montecatini. Lunching or dining at the Grand Hotel delle Terme was like dining at the Ritz today. He was also awarded the Cordon d’Oro of the Accademia della cucina della Toscana.

Why is Ristorante Da Ivo so famous?

It was more renowned for meat than for fish, it was the only one to use a charcoal grill. Ivo Natali knew how to make a great caciucco (fish stew), ribollita (vegetable potage with bread sop). He was the one who brought the famous mare e monti (pasta with clams and mushrooms) to Venice, not to mention his prawns with beans, arugula and onions. He was an artist in the kitchen.

What is your most popular specialty?

Pasta with ricotta, coffee and rum. He used to top it with freshly made hot zabaione. Lord Lawrence was one of the first to appreciate it. Since then, it spread by word of mouth and now everyone asks for it. The cook, Giorgina Mazzero, continues to propose a mixture of Tuscan, Venetian and Italian dishes with great success.

Many celebrities continue to come to your place.

Elton John comes frequently and has become a member of our “family”. He celebrated his birthday here. He adores our cooking and always brings all his friends.

‘Da Ivo’ opened in 1976 in the name of its founder, Ivo Natali from Tuscany.

Today Giovanni Fracassi is the manager.

‘Da Ivo’ inizia la sua storia nel 1976 grazie al suo fondatore, il toscano Ivo Natali. La gestione oggi è affidata a Giovanni Fracassi.

Ivo Natali ha fatto la storia della ristorazione in città.

Ha incominciato in Toscana, lavorava come cuoco a Montecatini. Pranzare o cenare al Grand Hotel delle Terme è come andare oggi al Ritz. E’ stato anche un Cordon d’Oro della Accademia della cucina della Toscana.

Perché è famoso il ristorante Da Ivo? E’ stato più famoso per la carne che per il pesce, era l’unico ad avere la carbonella. Ivo Natali sapeva cucinare in maniera egregia il caciucco, la ribollita ed è stato lui a portare a Venezia il famoso “mari e monti”, per non parlare degli scampi con fagioli, rucola e cipolla. Era un creativo in cucina.

Quale è il vostro piatto vincente?

Pasta con ricotta, caffè e rhum. Sopra ci metteva lo zabaione caldo fatto al momento. Lord Lawrence è stato tra i primi ad apprezzarlo e da allora divenne un passaparola tanto da essere richiesto da tutti. La cuoca, Giorgina Mazzero, continua, a proporre con grande successo prelibatezze toscane e venete unitamente a piatti di cucina italiana.

Tante sono le celebrità che continuano a venire da voi.

Elton John ormai è di casa ma soprattutto di famiglia. Ha festeggiato il suo compleanno. Adora la nostra cucina e porta sempre qui tutti i suoi amici.

“On a trip through South America, Bruce Chatwin met an elderly lady who was crossing the desert with an aluminum ladder on her shoulder. She was Maria Reiche, the German archeologist who was studying the Nazca lines. Standing on the ground, the stones had no meaning. They just looked like gravel. But from atop the ladder, the same stones formed the shape of a bird, a jaguar, a tree or a flower. We want the Architecture Biennale 2016 to offer a new point of view like that of Maria Reiche from her ladder.”

These are the words of Chilean architect and winner of the Pritzker award 2016 Alejandro Aravena, curator of the 15th international exhibition of Architecture, which he has entitled “Reporting from the front”. With sixty-two nations exhibiting and three special projects, the Biennale will form a single exposition itinerary from the Central Pavilion (gardens) to the Arsenale.

ARCHISTAR The names of David Chipperfield, Herzog & de Meuron, the Japanese studio Sanaa, sir Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas, Studio Mumbai, Shigeru Ban and Tadao Ando stand out among other well-known international architects. The project from Italy is Architecture and Vision, directed by Arturo Vittori, a study that ranges between projects of art and architecture, seeking solutions capable of balancing esthetics with ecologic and economic demands. Then there are the experiences of the group G124, set up by Renzo Piano to help regenerate the suburbs.

THE PRINCIPLES The old tradition of an event created by architects for other architects has been interrupted and substituted by the idea to use sharing to try to overcome the split between architecture and society. “From the architects’ court to the 78 Venezia | made in Veneto

Sono le parole dell’architetto cileno e premio Pritzker 2016 Alejandro Aravena, curatore della 15esima mostra internazionale di Architettura, a cui ha dato il titolo Reporting from the front. Con sessantadue partecipazioni nazionali e tre progetti speciali la Biennale forma un unico percorso espositivo dal Padiglione Centrale (Giardini) all’Arsenale.

ARCHISTAR Tra i ben noti nomi internazionali spiccano David Chipperfield, Herzog & de Meuron, lo studio giapponese Sanaa, sir Norman Foster, Rem Koolhaas, Studio Mumbai, Shigeru Ban e Tadao Ando. Per l’Italia, tra gli altri, c’è Architecture and Vision, diretto da Arturo Vittori, uno studio che spazia tra progetti di arte e di architettura, cercando soluzioni capaci di equilibrare l’estetica con istanze ecologiche ed economiche.

E poi le esperienze del gruppo G124, messo in piedi da Renzo Piano per aiutare la rigenerazione delle periferie.

I PRINCIPI Si interrompe la vecchia tradizione di una manifestazione fatta dagli architetti per gli architetti è il principio cardine, con l’idea di base di utilizzare l’arma della condivisione per tentare di ricucire lo scollamento che esiste tra architettura e società. “Dalla corte degli architetti al pubblico”, sintetizza Paolo Baratta, presidente della Biennale.

public,” Paolo Baratta, chairman of the Biennale, puts it in a nutshell. So, the Biennale speaks to a non-specialized public, including customers. Against a background of disappointing realizations, lost occasions, the construction of living spaces that are no pride for mankind, speaking to the public means “stoking up the desire for architecture,” concludes Baratta.

THE CURATOR An important commitment for Aravena (born 1967) who is well-prepared with a consolidated curriculum and knowledge of Italy, particularly of Venice where he participated in the Venice Prize one year before submitting his thesis in Chile in 1992. The following year (1993) he studied History and Theory at IUAV and engraving at the Academy of Fine Arts, until winning the Silver Lion at the 11th Biennale of Architecture (2008).“When I first came to Venice,” says Aravena, “I wanted to become acquainted with the architecture I had studied only from photographs. I wanted to go to the sources. I walked the narrow streets, measuring buildings.”

Having always valued the quality of the environment and of people’s lives above all the rest, he has clear ideas and speaks of taking the first step to give the right example “by learning from the types of architecture that despite limited resources, emphasize what is available instead of complaining about what is missing.”

THE THEME Reporting from the front takes on themes such as segregation, social inequalities, city outskirts, access to health services, natural disasters, insufficient lodgings, migration, informality, criminality, traffic, waste, pollution and community participation. It presents examples of synthesis where the pragmatic meets the existential, pertinence meets audacity and creativity meets common sense. The marginal place makes it necessary to be very well informed about what happens at the center of the world and, at the same time, to understand the virtuous procedures that are implemented there and not elsewhere. “The outskirts are not the place where the world ends,” said Iosif Brodskij.

The vernissage will be 26-27 May, the award ceremony and inauguration will be held 28 May. The exposition will be open until 27 November 2016.

Così, la Biennale parla anche al pubblico di non addetti ai lavori, compresi i committenti. Sullo sfondo di realizzazioni deludenti, di occasioni mancate, della costruzione di ambienti di vita di cui l’uomo non può andare fiero, parlare al pubblico significa «riattizzare il desiderio di architettura», conclude Baratta.

IL CURATORE Un ruolo impegnativo per Aravena (classe 1967) che non si fa trovare impreparato, forte anche di un consolidato curriculum e della conoscenza dell’Italia, di Venezia in particolare, dove aveva partecipato al Premio Venezia un anno prima della sua tesi conseguita in Cile nel 1992, e studiando l’anno dopo, nel 1993, Storia e Teoria allo IUAV, e incisione all›Accademia di Belle Arti, fino al Leone d›Argento conquistato alla 11esima Biennale Architettura (2008).

“Quando sono venuto a Venezia per la prima volta – racconta Aravena - volevo conoscere le architetture che avevo studiato solo in fotografia. Volevo andare alle fonti. Camminavo per le calli e misuravo edifici.”.

Lui che ha sempre privilegiato la qualità dell’ambiente e della vita delle persone al resto, sembra avere le idee chiare e parla di fare il primo passo per dare il buon esempio “imparando da quelle architetture che, nonostante la scarsità di mezzi, esaltano ciò che è disponibile invece di protestare per ciò che manca”.

IL TEMA Reporting from the front affronta temi quali la segregazione, le disuguaglianze, le periferie, l’accesso a strutture igienicosanitarie, i disastri naturali, la carenza di alloggi, la migrazione, l’informalità, la criminalità, il traffico, lo spreco, l’inquinamento e la partecipazione delle comunità. E presenta degli esempi di sintesi dove il pragmatico si intreccia con l’esistenziale, l’attinenza con l’audacia, la creatività con il buon senso.

Il luogo di margine impone di essere molto informati su quel che accade al centro del mondo e contemporaneamente di capire le pratiche virtuose che lì e non altrove si attuano. “La periferia non è il luogo dove il mondo finisce”, diceva Iosif Brodskij.

La vernice è il 26 e 27 maggio, la cerimonia di premiazione e di inaugurazione si svolge sabato 28 maggio. La mostra rimarrà aperta fino al 27 novembre 2016.

An exhibition at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on Italian art in the 60s Una mostra alla Collezione Peggy Guggenheim racconta l’arte italiana negli anni ‘60 An unprecedented interpretation of Italian art in the 60s: this is the objective attained by IMAGINE. New Imagery in Italian Art 1960-1969, curated by Luca Massimo Barbero, at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection until 19 September. The theme of the image is the guiding thread of the path that starts by analyzing the birth of a movement in Italian art that has attracted less attention and notoriety: the step beyond monochrome.

The development of the exhibition “proceeds by contrasts, jolts and mishaps created by discords and testing” as Barbero himself suggests. Each room is designed to be synthetically emblematic of one aspect of the artistic research by the protagonists of those years. The first section is dedicated to experiments with cancelling and masking reality deriving from the effervescent atmosphere in 1960 in Rome, with the Filtri [Filters] and Metalli [Metals] by Lo Savio, the Monocromi [Monochromes] by Schifano, the Schermi [Screens] by Mauri, and their dialogue with Angeli’s strong veiled images. The next step is the birth of a new type of image, which seemingly in reaction to international currents, looks at art history and almost creates a new mythology. This section hosts the works of Fioroni (Particolare della nascita di Venere [Detail of the birth of Venus], 1965) e di Festa (Nostalgia dell’infinito (Obelisco) [Nostalgia for Infinity (The Obelisk)], 1963, La grande Odalisca [The Great Odalisque], 1964). Two rooms, emblematic of this “everyday metaphysics”, are dedicated to Schifano and center on the hypnotic visual axis of the monumental L’inverno attraverso il museo [Winter passing through the museum] (1965), together with some surprising, less known works such as Io non amo la natura [I don’t love Nature] (1964), and Central Park East (1964), which reflect the artist’s relation with the passage of his intense experience in New York. Next, a whole room dedicated to the universe of Gnoli and his very personal lenticular images with works such as Due Dormienti [Two sleeping] (1966) and Letto Bianco [White bed] (1968). At the center of the exhibition, there is a moment of coexistence between the image and photography. This passage includes the world of cinema and media of Rotella (Posso? Un’inedita lettura dell’arte italiana degli anni ’60: è questo l’intento raggiunto della mostra IMAGINE. Nuove immagini nell’arte italiana 1960-1969 a cura di Luca Massimo Barbero, fino al 19 settembre alla Collezione Peggy Guggenheim. Il tema dell’immagine è il fil rouge del percorso, che prendendo avvio dal superamento del monocromo analizza la nascita di un momento meno noto e approfondito dell’arte italiana.

Il percorso espositivo “procede per contrasti, sbalzi, inciampi creati da dissonanze e verifiche” come suggerisce Barbero stesso: ogni sala vuole essere sinteticamente emblematica di un aspetto della ricerca artistica dei protagonisti di questi anni. Si parte con una sezione dedicata alle indagini di cancellazione e schermatura della realtà, derivanti dall’effervescente clima della Roma del 1960, con i Filtri e i Metalli di Lo Savio, i Monocromi di Schifano, gli Schermi di Mauri, in dialogo con le forti immagini velate di Angeli. Si passa poi alla nascita di una nuova tipologia di immagine, che quasi per reazione alle correnti internazionali, guarda alla storia dell’arte quasi creando una nuova mitologia: in questa sezione le opere della Fioroni (Particolare della nascita di Venere, 1965) e di Festa (Nostalgia dell’infinito (Obelisco), 1963, La grande Odalisca, 1964). Di questa “metafisica del quotidiano” emblematiche due sale dedicate a Schifano che ruotano intorno all’ipnotico cardine visivo del monumentale L’inverno attraverso il museo (1965), insieme ad alcune sorprendenti opere meno note, come Io non amo la natura (1964), e Central Park East (1964), che riflettono il rapporto dell’artista con il paesaggio nel momento della sua intensa esperienza newyorkese. Si entra poi nell’universo di Gnoli, alle cui particolarissime immagini lenticolari è dedicata un’intera sala, con lavori come Due Dormienti, (1966), Letto Bianco (1968). Centrale all’interno del percorso espositivo è un momento di convivenza tra immagine e mezzo fotografico. The image then became an object and surpassed the simple representation in the last rooms with the works of Pascali.

We spoke with Massimo Barbero about some aspects of the exhibition to better comprehend the innovative significance of the itinerary.

How was the idea of the exhibition born?

The project was born in connection with the investigation we are conducting here at the Peggy Guggenheim Collection on Italian art after World War II. The idea was to examine two fundamental moments of this period. The first is linked to the Italian Neoavanguardia movements, particularly Azimuth, thus a sort of rewind expressed in that monochrome mode that emerged in Milan at the end of the 50s. The other moment is the one we examine in this exhibition, which identifies another origin of Italian art, starting from the monochrome mode in Rome and goes as far as 1969.

Is there an underlying theme that unites the artists in the exhibition, aside from their contemporaneity in history?

The focalization on the birth of a new image. Image in the sense of a new symbol, the rebuilding of a new alphabet and thus a new mode of speaking through contemporary art.

How did you elaborate the exhibition itinerary?

In a textual mode, where the works are themselves a source of information. So rather than context, we start from the work of art to arrive at the social and historical moment. It is also an itinerary made of zones. I am thinking of the monochrome works by Schifano, Mauri and Lo Savio in the first rooms that slowly leave room for more powerful images to emerge as the exhibition continues.

How does Italian art of these years relate to Pop Art of the same period in the United States?

It is absolutely autonomous. The birth of the image in Italy has very strong links to art history, to museums and to mythology, all things that are part of our daily life. Very different from the consumer culture under investigation in America and London at the time.

Which of the works in the exhibition best express this period of art?

I would point to two important poles in the exhibition. The first is Schifano’s cyclopean work, L’inverno attraverso il museo, of 1965. Schifano is a very talented painter and this exhibition marks an important rediscovery of his work. The other is the Self-portrait by Giulio Paolini of 1968. A photograph on canvas, it represents the extraordinary and extremely conceptual style of those years.

Con Massimo Barbero abbiamo approfondito alcuni aspetti della mostra per cogliere meglio la portata innovativa del percorso.

Come è nata l’idea della mostra?

Il progetto è nato in continuità con l’indagine che stiamo conducendo alla Collezione Peggy Guggenheim sull’arte italiana del Secondo Dopoguerra. L’idea è stata quella di rintracciare due momenti fondamentali di questo periodo: il primo quello legato alle Neoavanguardie Italiane, in modo più preciso legato ad Azimuth, quindi una sorta di azzeramento che si concretizza in quella modalità monocroma che si realizza proprio a Milano alla fine degli anni ‘50; l’altro momento è quello che raccontiamo attraverso questa mostra e che delinea un’altra origine di arte italiana, che parte dalla monocromia romana e arriva fino al ’69.

C’è un filo conduttore, oltre il momento storico a cui appartengono, che lega gli artisti in mostra?

La focalizzazione sulla nascita di una nuova immagine intesa come un nuovo simbolo, una ricostruzione di un nuovo alfabeto e quindi un modo nuovo per far parlare l’arte contemporanea.

Come ha elaborato il percorso di mostra?

In modo testuale: le opere diventano una fonte di informazione.

Quindi più che dal contesto si parte proprio dall’opera per arrivare al momento storico e sociale. E’ poi un percorso costruito per zone: sto pensando ai monocromi di Schifano, Mauri, Lo Savio delle prime sale che lasciano piano piano il posto a un affioramento delle immagini sempre più potente con lo svolgersi della mostra.

Come si pone l’arte italiana di questi anni rispetto al pop statunitense dello stesso periodo?

In maniera assolutamente autonoma: la nascita dell’immagine in Italia è fortemente legata alla storia dell’arte, al museo, alla mitologia, cioè quello che per noi è quotidiano. Molto diverso dal consumo di massa oggetto dell’indagine americana e londinese di quegli anni.

Quali tra le opere in mostra raccontano al meglio questo periodo dell’arte?

Io rintraccerei due poli importanti all’interno della mostra: la prima è un’opera ciclopica di Schifano, L’inverno attraverso il museo, del 1965. Schifano è un pittore dotatissimo, questa mostra sancisce anche una sua importante riscoperta. L’altro è Autoritratto di Giulio Paolini del 1968: una fotografia su tela, che riprende un il gusto straordinario e molto concettuale di quegli anni.

Running until next November 20, Punta della Dogana presents Accrochage, a group exhibition curated by Caroline Bourgeois.

Accrochage brings together about seventy works never exhibited since becoming part of the Pinault Collection. Conceived specifically for Punta della Dogana, Accrochage will take up the entire museum exhibition space. To develop the project, the curator Caroline Bourgeois not only focused on a theme or historical period, but used precise rules, like rules for a game: “For the most part, I wanted to select the most significant groups of works that were a consequence of a minimal gesture or minimal thought, that evoke the quest for a void or mise en abyme of an aspect or moment of art history. [...] Although very different, these works share a simplicity, an opening that in some way expands the space of the other, the observer. With “Accrochage,” I wanted to encourage precisely this freedom. The neutral, generic, almost aloof exhibition title itself, first leaves space to the works, suggesting that one should merely look. The works, for their part, encourage the viewer to question the thing before his eyes, inviting him to look instead of see. They create a space where emotion and sensitivity are as important as visual perception and thought.”

The exhibition features the work of twenty-nine artists, twenty of whom are present for the first time in an exhibition of the Pinault Collection - Absalon, Nina Canell, Tacita Dean, Peter Dreher, Fernanda Gomes, On Kawara, Edward Krasiński, Guillaume Leblon, Sol LeWitt, Bernd Lohaus, Goshka Macuga, Fabio Mauri, Prabhavathi Meppayil, Michel Parmentier, Florian Pumhösl, Haim Steinbach, Niele Toroni, Günther Uecker, Dewain Valentine, Cerith Wyn Evans - while nine are historical artists of the collection - Pier Paolo Calzolari, Pierre Huyghe, Louise Lawler, Jean-Luc Moulène, Henrik Olesen, Philippe Parreno, Charles Ray, Thomas Schütte and Franz West.

Fino al prossimo 20 novembre, Punta della Dogana presenta Accrochage una mostra collettiva a cura di Caroline Bourgeois.

Accrochage raccoglie circa settanta opere mai esposte da quando sono entrate a far parte della Pinault Collection. Concepita specificamente per Punta della Dogana, Accrochage occuperà l’intero spazio espositivo del museo. La curatrice Caroline Bourgeois per sviluppare il progetto non si è concentrata su un tema o su un periodo storico, ma ha usato regole precise come fossero le regole di un gioco: “Ho voluto selezionare per lo più gruppi significativi di opere che sono la conseguenza di un gesto o di un pensiero minimale e che evocano una ricerca del vuoto o una mise en abyme di un aspetto o di un momento della storia dell’arte. [...] Seppur molto diversi, questi lavori sono accomunati da una semplicità, un’apertura che in qualche modo dilata lo spazio dell’altro, dell’osservatore. Con “Accrochage” ho voluto incoraggiare proprio questa libertà. Il titolo stesso della mostra, neutro, generico, quasi in disparte, lascia spazio anzitutto alle opere, limitandosi a suggerire: guardate. Pierre Huyghe, Untitled (Human Mask), 2014 (Pinault Collection) mar Polke (1941-2010). The exhibition was conceived by Elena Geuna and Guy Tosatto, director of the Musée de Grenoble, in collaboration with The Estate of Sigmar Polke. It traces the artist’s entire career, from the 1960s to the 2000s, and the many techniques he used. In fact, Polke focused his work on the expressive potential of the materials, experimenting with every type of medium - canvas, paper and cloth wallpaper, silk etc.- and pigments. Out of this came a huge corpus of works that combine abstract solutions with a rich repertoire of pop approaches made more complex, from the 1980s, by introducing social or political themes. The retrospective includes about ninety works, some from the Pinault Collection and some from important public and private collections.

2016 marks the 75th anniversary of the artist’s birth and the 30th anniversary of his participation in the Venice Biennale in 1986 where he was awarded the Leone d’Oro. Sigmar Polke has a special place in the Pinault Collection: presented in four of the exhibitions at Palazzo Grassi-Punta della Dogana, a special tribute dedicated to him marks the tenth anniversary of the reopening of Palazzo Grassi.

The first work that visitors can admire in the atrium of Palazzo Grassi will be Axial Age (2005-2007), a monumental work that is now part of the Pinault Collection following his presentation at the Venice Biennale in 2007. Sigmar Polke himself oversaw the installation of the work at the Punta della Dogana in 2009 for the museum’s inauguration with the exhibition “Mapping the Studio.” The retrospective will take up the entire exhibition space of Palazzo Grassi and will present works that use different formats and techniques: painting, drawing, installation and film.

Palazzo Grassi presenta invece nello stesso periodo la prima grande mostra personale in Italia dedicata all’artista tedesco Sigmar Polke (1941-2010). La mostra è concepita da Elena Geuna e Guy Tosatto, direttore del Musée de Grenoble, in collaborazione con The Estate of Sigmar Polke. Ripercorre l’intera carriera dell’artista, dagli anni ’60 agli anni Duemila, e la molteplicità delle tecniche utilizzate. Polke infatti ha incentrato il proprio lavoro sul potenziale espressivo dei materiali, sperimentando ogni genere di supporti - tela, carta e stoffa da parati, seta ecc.- e di pigmenti; ne è scaturito ampio corpus di opere che fondono soluzioni astratte con un ricco repertorio di matrice pop reso più complesso, a partire dagli anni Ottanta, dall’introduzione di temi di impegno sociale o politico.

La retrospettiva raccoglie circa novanta opere provenienti in parte dalla Pinault Collection e in parte da importanti collezioni pubbliche e private. Il 2016 segna il 75esimo anniversario della nascita dell’artista e il 30esimo anniversario della sua partecipazione alla Biennale di Venezia del 1986, dove fu premiato con il Leone d’Oro. Sigmar Polke occupa un posto particolare nella Pinault Collection: presentato in quattro delle mostre di Palazzo Grassi-Punta della Dogana, gli viene dedicato uno speciale tributo in occasione del decimo anniversario della riapertura di Palazzo Grassi.

On exhibit in Venice, the photos that consecrated Newton In mostra a Venezia, alla Casa Tre Oci, le foto che consacrarono Newton all’arte dell’obiettivo For the first time in Venice until August 7, more than 200 images by Helmut Newton, one of the most important and celebrated 20th century photographers, make up the exhibition Helmut Newton. Fotografie. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes The exhibition, curated by Matthias Harder and Denis Curti and hosted at Casa Tre Oci, grew from a project launched in 2011 at the behest of June Newton, the great photographer’s widow.

The exhibition collects images from White Women, Sleepless Nights and Big Nudes, Newton’s first three books published in the late ‘70s.

In White Women, published in 1976, Newton chose 81 images (42 in color and 39 in black and white), introducing the nude and eroticism in fashion photography for the first time. In the balance between art and fashion, the shots are mostly female nudes presenting contemporary fashion. These visions come from art history, particularly Maya desnuda and Maya vestida by Goya, preserved at the Prado in Madrid.

Sleepless Nights is more retrospective in character, with 69 photographs (31 in color and 38 in black and white) shot for different magazines (Vogue, among others) and is what defines his style, making him an icon of fashion photography. With Big Nudes, Newton became the star in the history of the late 20th-twentieth image. The 39 shots in black and white from Big Nudes launched a new dimension in human photography: the blown-up photos that, by this time, were shown in galleries and museums around the world.

In the artist’s autobiography published in 2004, Newton explains how these naked full-length shots taken in the studio with a medium format camera, which produced the life-size prints Big Nudes, were inspired by the popular posters used

by German police to search for members of the RAF terrorist group (Rote Armee Fraktion).

Per la prima volta a Venezia fino al 7 agosto, oltre 200 immagini di Helmut Newton, uno dei fotografi più importanti e celebrati del Novecento con la mostra Helmut Newton. Fotografie. White Women / Sleepless Nights / Big Nudes L’esposizione, curata da Matthias Harder e Denis Curti e ospitata alla Casa Tre Oci è frutto di un progetto, nato nel 2011 per volontà di June Newton, vedova del grande fotografo.

La rassegna raccoglie le immagini di White Women, Sleepless Nights e Big Nudes, i primi tre libri di Newton pubblicati alla fine degli anni ‘70 In White Women, pubblicato nel 1976, Newton sceglie 81 immagini (42 a colori e 39 in bianco e nero), introducendo per la prima volta il nudo e l’erotismo nella fotografia di moda. In bilico tra arte e moda, gli scatti sono per lo più nudi femminili, attraverso i quali presentava la moda contemporanea. Queste visioni trovano origine nella storia dell’arte, in particolare nella Maya desnuda e nella Maya vestida di Goya, conservati al Prado di Madrid.

Sleepless Nights è un volume a carattere più retrospettivo che raccoglie 69 fotografie (31 a colori e 38 in bianco e nero) realizzate per diversi magazine (Vogue, tra tutti) ed è quello che definisce il suo stile rendendolo un’icona della fashion photography.

Con Big Nudes, Newton raggiunge il ruolo di protagonista nella storia dell’immagine del secondo Novecento. I 39 scatti in bianco e nero di Big Nudes inaugurano una nuova dimensione della fotografia umana: quella delle gigantografie che, da questo momento, entrano nelle gallerie e nei musei di tutto il mondo.

Nell’autobiografia dell’artista pubblicata nel 2004, Newton spiega come questi nudi a figura intera ripresi in studio con la macchina fotografica di medio formato, da cui ha prodotto le stampe a grandezza naturale di Big Nudes, gli fossero stati ispirati dai manifesti diffusi dalla polizia tedesca per ricercare gli appartenenti al gruppo terroristico della RAF (Rote Armee Fraktion).

With her voice to set Maria Callas. A Verona una mostra ne ripercorre la vita.

Con la sua voce come scenario A woman, more than a voice. Also an icon of style. But it had not always been like that. Between 1947 and 1953, accompanying the enthusiasm that her exceptional voice unleashed, the comments on her esthetic aspect were quite unpleasant. Weighing almost 100 kilos with a stature of 1.73 meters [5’-8”], her figure had nothing of swan-like grace. The comment of a critic after the Aida at the Arena di Verona was very nasty: “...impossible to note the difference between the feet of the elephants and those of Aida...” The incredible metamorphosis began about 1952 when she decided to lose 35 kilos and established her bonds with Biki, the dressmaker in Milan, and Alain Reynaud, fashion house director and designer, her Pygmalion off the stage, and reached a climax in 1957 when she was named the most elegant woman in the world. Her artistic career underwent a similar transformation at the same time. Her body and movements finally became the instruments of interpretation that matched the expectations of her exceptional voice. Her development benefited over time from the contributions of great directors such as Franco Zeffirelli and Luchino Visconti, which enabled her to perfect her personality and exhibit the lady in her nature. As of 1954, the new thin, elegant and refined Callas became a cultural phenomenon. Great couturiers, such as Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin and Hermès called her ‘la divina’. Her wardrobe was endless with dresses, shoes, turbans, hats, bags and accessories all accompanied by detailed notes about all possible combinations. The exhibition includes a few garments saved from the bonfire that Callas organized in the garden of her house in Milan when some museums refused to accept her stage costumes. There are also jewelry, video clips, letters and photographs and documents from theaters and private collections. The exhibition displays the extraordinary life and career of Anna Maria Cecilia Sophia Kalogeropouloued together with films of the time on the theme of her prodigious voice.

Prima di una voce, una donna. Una icona anche di stile. Ma non fu sempre così. Tra il 1947 e 1953 accanto all’entusiasmo che la sua impareggiabile voce sprigionava, i commenti sul suo aspetto estetico erano assai sgradevoli. Quasi 100 chili per 1 metro e 73 di altezza non la facevano certo assomigliare a un cigno. Molto sgradevole fu il commento di un critico dopo la rappresentazione dell’Aida all’Arena di Verona: “…impossibile notare la differenza tra le zampe degli elefanti e quelle di Aida….”. L’incredibile metamorfosi iniziò intorno al ’52 quando decise di perdere 35 chili e il legame con la sarta milanese Biki e Alain Reynaud, direttore e stilista della casa di moda e suo pigmalione dell’immagine fuori dalle scene, la consacrarono nel ’57 donna più elegante del mondo. E di pari passo coincise anche con la trasformazione artistica. I movimenti del corpo finalmente libero diventarono un supporto interpretativo e atteso alla sua stupenda voce. Una crescita alla quale contribuirono nel tempo anche grandi registi come Franco Zeffirelli e Luchino Visconti che l’aiutò a perfezionare il personaggio e a tirar fuori la ‘signora’ che era in lei. Dal 1954 la nuova Callas magra, elegante e raffinata, diventa un fenomeno di costume.

Grandi sarti come Christian Dior, Yves Saint Laurent, Pierre Cardin, Hermès, la reclamano come ‘la divina’. Il suo guardaroba era sterminato: abiti, scarpe, turbanti, cappelli, borse, accessori insieme a dettagliatissimi biglietti per ogni possibile loro abbinamento. In mostra alcuni capi salvati dal falò che la Callas orchestrò nel giardino della sua casa di Milano a seguito del rifiuto di alcuni musei ad accettare i suoi abiti di scena. Ci sono gioielli, video, lettere e fotografie, documenti provenienti dagli archivi dei teatri e da collezioni private. La mostra mette in scena la straordinaria carriera artistica e la vita di Anna Maria Cecilia Sophia Kalogeropouloued insieme a filmati d’epoca con il fil rouge dalla sua prodigiosa voce.

Le date da non perdere nei principali teatri di Venezia Spring is the time when the seasons in the great theaters end, but Venice is a bit of a special case, a treasure-trove city where the cultural events, of the highest quality, never sleep. And apart from the theater season, which in this case is really coming to an end, albeit in style, in terms of operas and symphonic music appointments, April, May and June offer delicacies not to be missed for all the world.

DRAMA The last two titles that close the theater season of the main drama theater in Venice, the Goldoni Theater, are two beautiful performances. Those who have heard of Emma Dante, in the new show Le sorelle Macaluso, on stage from April 21 to 24, know that, for the director and writer from Palermo, this clearly marks a return to the roots of her most disruptive and turbulent language, where the theme of life and death is still an inseparable binomial, powerful and constantly explored. A production which, incidentally, was declared one of the top ten operas in the world, an excellent production not to be missed in the 2015-2016 season, by one of the best of art and culture sites (culturetrip.com) that, along with the Venetian theater’s production, has also selected nine other shows produced, among others, by the Metropolitan Opera House in New York, the Paris Opéra, the Sydney Opera House, the Staatsoper in Berlin. Primavera è il tempo in cui le stagioni dei grandi teatri volgono al termine, ma Venezia è un po’ un caso a sé, un città-scrigno dove l’offerta culturale, di qualità elevatissima, non dorme mai.

E a parte la stagione di prosa, che in questo caso è davvero agli sgoccioli ma in grande stile, in fatto di titoli d’opera e di appuntamenti con la musica sinfonica il calendario di aprile, maggio e giugno offre squisitezze da non perdere per niente al mondo.

PROSA Gli ultimi due titoli che chiudono la stagione di prosa del principale teatro di prosa di Venezia, il Teatro Goldoni, sono due bellissimi spettacoli. Chi conosce il teatro di Emma Dante, nel nuovo spettacolo Le sorelle Macaluso, in scena dal 21 al 24 aprile che, per la regista e autrice palermitana, segna in maniera evidente un ritorno alle radici del suo linguaggio più dirompente e squassante, dove il tema della vita e della morte risulta ancora un binomio indivisibile, potente, continuamente da esplorare.

La stagione del Teatro Goldoni di Venezia, si chiude con lo spettacolo Smith & Wesson di Alessandro Baricco (4-8 maggio) che torna al teatro puro dopo il successo eclatante di Novecento. Una grande metafora sulla vita e sulle scelte che ne cambiano il corso, interpretata da un inedito Natalino Balasso, affiancato dal premio UBU Fausto Russo Alesi, per la regia di Gabriele Vacis.

OPERA Dall’8 al 24 aprile, e poi di nuovo dall’8 maggio al 5 giugno, torna in scena lo storico allestimento della Traviata di Giuseppe Verdi firmata da Robert Carsen, prodotto dalla Fenice. Of all the splendid buildings seeming to float along the Grand Canal, Contarini Corfù Palace stands out for its rare beauty, lit up by historic nuances that render it an authentic representation of Venetian Gothic style. Built at the end of the 14th century, this palace’s history could fill the pages of an extraordinary novel. In 1524, during a sumptuous party organized in honor of Vienna Gritti, granddaughter of Doge Andrea Gritti, and Paolo Contarini, son of Zaccaria il Cavaliere, it was said: “That day, the entire palace was adorned with precious carpets and tapestries.” And it was during this period, too, that the second palace was built, annexed to the Contarini Corfù and named “dagli Scrigni”. The Contarini family owned the palaces in S. Trovaso until 1838, which were then sold to the Countess Matilde Berthold, who restored their interiors in the mid-1800s. The two still-connected buildings were later purchased by Mr. Peabody Russel, a wealthy American art dealer. Mario and Moceniga had three children: Bianca in 1902, Riccardo (Bubi) in 1903 and Giulio in 1905. Bianca married Baron Raimondo Franchetti, the explorer famous for discovering

The first piano nobile of Palazzo Rocca remains an ideal setting for the most exclusive parties in Venice

Dankalia, who unfortunately died in an airplane accident while traveling to his beloved Africa. Riccardo, who often eagerly followed his brother-in-law Raimondo’s expeditions, died in 1935 after a grave illness. Giulio, who became a marine officer and served during World War II starting in 1943, was captured and held prisoner in a German concentration camp in 1946.

He had married Adriana Winspeare Guicciardi, with whom he had three children, Laura, Giulia and Francesca, who are today the proprietors and inhabitants of the palace. In 1985 Their Royal Highnesses Prince Charles and Princess Diana of Wales requested to see the palace tower (Specola) so they might admire the Venetian rooftops and visit a true, lived-in Venetian palace. In the early years of this century, there were more than 1200 bàcari, wine shops and small restaurants. Unfortunately, today very few authentic taverns remain but there are informal eateries that are cheerful and noisy, sometimes identified by old signs and simple furnishings: shelves for flasks and drinking glasses, wooden tables, straw-bottomed chairs, vintage photos and team posters on the walls. During the 1700s this particular type of hospitality was much appreciated by writers, musicians and men of culture such as Stendhal, Richard Wagner and Carlo Goldoni, who found inspiring ideas for his comedies. They have been pouring out ombre in Venice since the days of Casanova, and the bàcari served poets and artists, the more refined that catered to the well-off and the disreputable, but they all served ombre. Nel Settecento questa particolare tipologia di ospitalità fu apprezzata da scrittori, musicisti e uomini di cultura come Stendhal, Richard Wagner e Carlo Goldoni che qui vi trovò appassionanti spunti per le sue commedie.
