lorence is a walkable, human-scale city and has one of Europe’s biggest pedestrian areas, which is ideal for talking long walks and enjoying all major cultural attractions. Last year, the City of Florence introduced Firenze The Walking City project (http://sport.comune. fi.it/theWalkingCity/index. html), 18 suggested itineraries covering 97 kilometers, along the river and through the hills.

If you wish to plunge in local history, we recommend a twohour walk past the city’s top sights. Leaving from Starhotels Michelangelo, a stone’s throw from Stazione Leopolda, a fascinating example of industrial architecture, walk along Lungarno Vespucci towards Piazza del Duomo, which gathers Florence’s best- known monuments and churches: the

Duomo, or Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore, Giotto’s bell tower and St. John’s Baptistery.

We suggest to walk down towards the Lungarno and Ponte Vecchio. By crossing the Ponte Vecchio with its jewelry shops and the Vasari Corridor passing over it, you reach Palazzo Pitti ( once home to the Medici family) and the Boboli Gardens. This is the so-called Oltrarno area, the left bank of the Arno river. The tour proceeds by going back to the right bank, across Santa Trinità Bridge which leads to Via de’Tornabuoni, the city’s most elegant shopping street. Our walking tour ends at Palazzo Strozzi, which houses some of the best and most interesting exhibitions held in Florence.

Needless to say, there are still plenty of things to see and do and worth many trips back.

Firenze è una città a misura d’uomo e l’area pedonale, che è una delle più grandi d’Europa, permette lunghe passeggiate, tra wellness e cultura. Su questa traccia il Comune ha presentato lo scorso anno il progetto Firenze The Walking City (http://sport. comune.fi.it/theWalkingCity/ index.html) che suggerisce 18 percorsi per una lunghezza di 97 km totali, lungo il fiume e sulle colline. Se invece preferite una full immersion nella storia, noi vi suggeriamo una passeggiata di due ore circa che tocca i principali monumenti della città. Partendo dallo Starhotels Michelangelo, a due passi dalla Stazione Leopolda, architettura industriale di grande charme, prendete il vicinissimo Lungarno Vespucci in direzione Piazza del Duomo dove troviamo tra i più noti monumenti e chiese di Firenze: il Duomo o

Cattedrale di Santa Maria del Fiore, il Campanile di Giotto e il Battistero di San Giovanni.

Il consiglio è di dirigersi verso i Lungarni in direzione del Ponte Vecchio. Percorrendo Ponte Vecchio e le sue botteghe, mentre si segue con lo sguardo il Corridoio Vasariano e l’Arno, si arriva a Palazzo Pitti (residenza della famiglia De’ Medici) e il Giardino di Boboli. Qui siamo sulla riva sinistra dell’Arno, nel quartiere di Oltrarno.

L’itinerario prevede di tornare sulla riva destra, passando da Ponte Santa Trinità che ci permette di attraversare Via de’ Tornabuoni, via dello shopping più esclusivo. Il tour di Firenze a piedi termina a Palazzo Strozzi, di stagione in stagione sede di mostre di grande valore artistico.

Le cose da vedere sarebbero ancora moltissime e meritevoli di visite ripetute.

Candida Morvillo shares her experience in the Starhotels world Candida Morvillo racconta la sua esperienza nel mondo Starhotels

I

have had the pleasure of staying at Starhotels Splendid Venice during the Carnival period. The hotel is located in the heart of the city and has a beautiful, typical Venetian atmosphere.

You can even reach it by boat and the courtyard is popular with both an international clientele and Venetian gondoliers, which gives you that comfortable, “at home” feeling that is rarely found in luxury hotels.

I have very happy memories of my time spent in the city on that occasion, for my enjoyment of Venice was doubled: I attended the Doge’s Ball, wearing a magnificent eighteenth-century gown, and had a taste of traditional Venetian glamour, but I also enjoyed Starhotels Splendid Venice’s intimate and romantic atmosphere and was able to set aside some time to relax. That is where I wrote the first pages of my latest novel, Le stelle non sono lontane, published by Bompiani.

Ho avuto il piacere di essere ospite dello Starhotels Splendid Venice durante il periodo del Carnevale.

L’hotel è proprio nel cuore della città e vi si respira una bellissima atmosfera, tipica veneziana.

Vi si può accedere anche in barca e il cortile è frequentato sia da una clientela internazionale che dai gondolieri veneziani: tutto questo contribuisce a creare quella familiarità, quella sensazione di ‘sentirsi a casa’ che è molto difficile da trovare in un grande albergo di lusso.

Ho un ricordo molto bello di questa esperienza perchè ho potuto vivere la città di Venezia in un duplice ruolo…partecipai al Ballo del Doge, con uno splendido abito vintage del 700, respirando appieno la tradizione e il fascino glamour della città, ma allo stesso tempo grazie all’atmosfera intima e romantica dello Starhotels Splendid Venice sono riuscita a ritagliarmi del tempo per me stessa, staccando da tutti i miei impegni.

I often go to Starhotels Rosa Grand in Milan as well, for a business lunch or a drink with friends. The hotel works very well for my interviews and business meetings due to its downtown location and professional and discreet atmosphere.

Candida Morvillo, leader writer of Gruppo Editoriale Rizzoli Corriere della Sera, was editor-in-chief of weekly magazine Novella 2000 from June 2008 to September 2011.

She also worked for A, Vanity Fair, Oggi and Il Mattino. She wrote the essay La Repubblica delle veline, vita vezzi e vizi delle ragazze della tivù dagli anni Cinquanta ai giorni nostri published by Rizzoli. In July 2006, she was awarded the Angelo Rizzoli International Journalism Prize as best under-35 print and news agency journalist. YC is by far my favorite city, such a fast-changing city, and every time I go back, after having lived there for several years, it’s so exciting to see what has changed while I was away… “mission impossible”, of course! I never take the subway because I don’t want to miss a single corner or new building under construction. NYC is breathtaking any season of the year, any time of the day. At sunrise it is simply amazing: watching the city wake up is a treat. The one NYC tradition I really enjoy is power breakfast, a business meeting first thing in the morning, but also a great way to start the day on a delicious note. Broadway shows are definitely among the must-sees: I love musicals. I love the Rockfeller Center and its ice-skating rink, which brings back some lovely memories of my children and I together. Organic food-addicts should head straight to Organic Avenue shops and restaurants, scattered across the city, and to Dylan Candy Store. As for women’s shopping, I recommend Figue, at 268 Elizabeth Street, started by former Tory Burchdesigner Stephanie von Watzdorf, and for hat lovers, the one-of-a-kind handmade pieces by Satya Twena Fine Millinery and department store Dover Street Market. For menswear, Acustom Apparel, where they use the latest 3D technology to make tailor-made suits to the customer’s choice of fabric. For home goods, William-Wayne in Lexington Avenue. The best pet shop in Manhattan is American Kennels.

For dinner, try a Chinese restaurant with an innovative twist: Fung Tu (22 Orchard St., near Hester St).

‘NY è la città che adoro in assoluto, in continua evoluzione, e dopo averci vissuto diversi anni ogni volta che torno cerco di vedere tutto quello che cambia…missione impossibile ovviamente! Mai preso una subway, perchè non voglio perdermi nemmeno un angolo o un nuovo edificio in costruzione.

NY è bella in ogni stagione, e a qualsiasi ora del giorno. L’alba è meravigliosa: camminare per le sue strade e vedere la città che si sveglia è un’esperienza incredibile.

Un’usanza che mi piace è il Power Breakfast, ovvero il primo meeting di lavoro, un modo per iniziare la giornata in modo piacevole.

Da non perdere mai uno show a Broadway: io adoro i musical! Il mio department store preferito rimane Saks e la sua vicinanza al the Michelangelo mi permette di inserire un break nella mia giornata di lavoro. Adoro il Rockfeller con il suo pattinaggio

airing a fish dish with a glass of red wine has gone from being an odd passing fad to being a well-established habit.

Rich fish stews can go delightfully with a red Cirò or a Pinot noir from the Alto Adige, ideally a fairly soft, unstructured version. Serve black pepper mussels with a Negroamaro from Apulia, rich eel stews with a Chianti Colline Pisane or a Barbera d’Alba, a fish stew from Livorno with its traditional partner Chianti (Montalbano Chianti if possible) or alternatively with a Bolgheri red.

A substantial dish featuring swordfish, a fairly rich fish, goes perfectly with soft fruity reds from Campania, even slightly fizzy versions.

This is the case for the wines we have selected for you in this issue which are ideal when matched with the exclusive fish dish prepared by Raffaele Guarracino, chef at the restaurant of SHS Terminus hotel in Naples.

L’abbinamento di un piatto di pesce a un bicchiere di vino rosso da semplice moda stravagante e passeggera è diventata una consuetudine consolidata.

Ricche zuppe di pesce possono fare la gioia di un Cirò rosso, o di un Pinot nero dell’Alto Adige, magari uno non troppo strutturato.

PIEDIROSSO D’ISCHIA Per’ ‘e Palummo – Casa D’Ambra This is a DOC wine (Registered designation of origin) which can only be produced on the island of Ischia. It is ruby red in colour, with a distinctive vinous aroma. Pleasanttasting with a dry flavour, medium-bodied and well-balanced tannins.

E’ un vino DOC la cui produzione è consentita nell’isola d’Ischia ed ha un colore rubino odore vinoso, caratteristico, gradevole, ed un sapore asciutto, di medio corpo e giustamente tannico.

LACRYMA CHRISTY Mastroberardino The red Lacryma Christi del Vesuvio is a fine wine. It has a deep red colour with purple tinges and violet notes, which evoke the sweet violet. It has a soft, pleasant taste and a well-balanced structure.

Il Lacryma Christy rosso del Vesuvio è un vino pregiato. Il suo colore rosso intenso presenta riflessi violacei, ricorda la violetta e il fior di mammola, ha il gusto gradevole, morbido è di equilibrata struttura.

The exclusive fish recipe by Raffaele Guarracino, chef at the Hotel Terminus, Naples L’esclusiva ricetta di pesce dello chef Raffaele Guarracino, Terminus, Napoli Ingredients (serves 4): 500 gr. Swordfish, cut into slices, 10 artichokes, 150 gr. baby tomatoes from Vesuvius, parsley, garlic, salt, pepper, extra virgin olive oil to taste. Recipe: cut the fish slices into rounds and fry till a golden brown. Cut 7 artichokes into julienne strips and sauté them in oil and garlic. Fry the remaining 3 artichokes. Halve the baby tomatoes and fry them gently in oil. Assemble all the cooled ingredients in layers, with a layer of swordfish, a layer of artichokes and lastly a layer of tomatoes. Season with salt and parsley. Repeat the layers three times to create the mille feuille. Bake at 150° for 8 minutes.

Ingredienti (per 4 persone): 500 gr. pesce spada a fette, 10 carciofi, 150 gr. pomodorini del Vesuvio, prezzemolo, aglio, sale, pepe, olio extravergine q.b. Procedimento: decoppare in forma tonda le fette di pesce spada e doratele in padella. Tagliare 7 carciofi a julienne e saltateli in padella con olio e aglio, gli altri 3 friggerli. Tagliate i pomodorini e rosolateli con olio. Comporre il tutto, raffreddato, con uno strato di pesce spada, uno di carciofini e i pomodori. Condire con sale e prezzemolo. Ripetere l’operazione per 3 volte fino ad ottenere il millefoglie. Infornare a 150 gradi per 8 minuti 31

M

assimo Listri began his career as a photographer at a very young age, when he was just sixteen. Thanks to his father, a journalist and literary critic, with whom he began telling in pictures what his father described with words.

He made his debut with a series of extraordinary black and white portraits of the leading figures of the twentieth century: Montale, René Clair, Carlo Bo, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Zeri, Sir Harold Acton and many more... Massimo spent important moments of his early training with them, and perhaps these meetings helped to hom to become first a photojournalist and then an artist. They certainly helped him to form that personal point of view, which is not only a photographic perspective but a way of making a place his own,to

so it could return to us in its stylistically perfect and absolute beauty.

Whoever has seen him work tells mainly of the extraordinary ease with which Listri finds the perfect angle, the one which captures the soul of a place. It often happens in a few minutes, like falling in love, like a sort of liaison between the artist and his muse. Which in this case is not a creature, but a room, a hall, a courtyard, a view... Places, never people. And if you ask him why, he replies without melancholy: “I like to work alone.” He is able to photograph, with equal mastery, the opulence of a baroque hall or of the mirrors at Versailles, the decadence of a room covered with dust, of an abandoned garden, or the sights of Capri, just as well as the dusty volumes of the State Archives in Naples.

Grazie a suo padre, giornalista e critico letterario, con cui inizia a raccontare per immagini quello che suo padre descrive con le parole. Esordisce con una serie di straordinari ritratti in bianco e nero sulle personalità di rilievo del Novecento: Montale, René Clair, Carlo Bo, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Zeri, sir Harold Acton e molti altri… Con loro Massimo ha passato momenti fondamentali della sua formazione e forse questi incontri hanno concorso a delineare il suo essere prima fotoreporter e poi artista.

Hanno contribuito certamente a formare quel suo personalissimo punto di vista, che non è solo una prospettiva fotografica ma un modo di far proprio un luogo per poi restituircelo nella sua forma stilisticamente perfetta e

di assoluta bellezza.

Chi lo ha visto lavorare racconta soprattutto la semplicità straordinaria con cui Listri individua l’angolazione perfetta, quella da cui si coglie l’anima di un luogo. Succede spesso in pochi minuti, come un innamoramento, una sorta di liason tra l’artista e la sua musa.

Che in questo caso non è una creatura, ma una stanza, un salone, una corte, uno scorcio…

Luoghi, mai persone. E se gli chiedi perché, risponde senza malinconia: “mi piace lavorare da solo”.

Riesce a fotografare con uguale maestria l’opulenza - quella di un salone barocco o degli specchi di Versailles - come la decadenza di una stanza velata dalla polvere, di un giardino abbandonato; gli scorci di Capri come i volumi polverosi dell’Archivio di Stato a Napoli.

e was born and raised in Rome. The son of a university professor of cinema, with Neapolitan origins, Carlo has always loved Rome, its streets, its houses, its people. From the terrace of his house, high on the hilltop of the Monteverde Vecchio district, you can see a large part of this beautiful city, and sometimes enjoy breathtaking sunsets. Carlo Verdone and Rome, the eternal city that, like all the great capitals of the world, always seems to be on the verge of disaster. It has now regained its splendour in our collective imagination thanks to “The Great Beauty”, which won an Oscar for the best foreign film in 2014, with Carlo playing a leading role. Let’s talk with him about the film and about his next trip.

Yes, I was invited by a prestigious American university in Bloomington, Indiana, to teach a course on the commedia all’italiana, that is, Italian-style comedy. I am very pleased to be able to explain, in my own way, the genre that most identifies us throughout the world, the one that we have in our DNA: realistic comedy, the kind that can speak about serious things with a smile, and which knows how to entertain an audience without forgetting the realities of life. I am pleased to be able to bring the great beauty of Italian cinema to the American public.

Incidentally, how did you spend the Oscar night?

I was invited to Los Angeles, but I thought it would be right to leave the stage entirely to Paolo Sorrentino. I spent the night quietly in Rome. At six in the morning, my phone began

Ero stato invitato a Los Angeles, ma ho pensato che era più giusto lasciare il palcoscenico tutto a Paolo Sorrentino. Ho passato la notte tranquillamente a Roma. Alle sei di mattina il mio telefono ha cominciato a vibrare, una, due, venti volte…

to vibrate, once, twice, twenty times ... and I understood. And I called Paolo. He sounded very happy.

According to you, what is the image of Rome that emerges from the film?

Rome is the magnificent setting of a drama. An almost theatrical drama, which tells about the derailment of today’s society. Sorrentino tells about a society without ethics, without values. He tells about a world of solitude, a world of social climbing, of pretense. But the city, around this dreary world, is beautiful.

Does “The Great Beauty” represent a worldwide relaunching for Rome’s image?

Yes, of course. But we must be careful: if an American comes to Italy imagining to find the city seen in the film, he will find a big difference. Sorrentino 42

showed a city that exists mainly in his mind: a city without traffic, with no cars. Rome is always beautiful, but it needs a lot of work, a decisive action, to return it to its state of beauty.

Otherwise, foreigners will come and ask: “…but where is the city in the film?”.

The Rome that Sorrentino shows has a “great beauty” which refers mainly to the past.

Roma è la magnifica scenografia di un dramma. Un dramma quasi teatrale, che racconta il deragliamento della società di oggi. Sorrentino racconta una società priva di etica, priva di valori. Racconta un mondo di solitudine, un mondo di arrivismo, di finzione. Ma la città, attorno a questo mondo cupo, appare bellissima.

La grande bellezza

rappresenta un rilancio per l’immagine di Roma nel mondo?

Sì, certamente. Però bisogna fare molta attenzione: se un americano viene in Italia immaginando di trovare la città che si vede nel film, troverà una bella differenza. Sorrentino ha mostrato una città che vive soprattutto nella sua mente: una città senza traffico, senza automobili. Roma è sempre bellissima, ma ha bisogno di un grande lavoro, di un intervento deciso, per restituirla alla sua bellezza. Altrimenti gli stranieri verranno e si chiederanno: ma la città del film dov’è?

La Roma che Sorrentino mostra ha una “grande bellezza” che si riferisce soprattutto al passato.

Are you wary of the future?

I am cautiously optimistic. The Italian cinema is experiencing, thanks to this film and to this Oscar, a great opportunity for a relaunch. And the city of Rome has a card to play from the point of view of international tourism.

The film is a great commercial for the city of Rome.

What is the difference between the Rome of Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita” and the Rome of “The Great Beauty”?

There is a big difference. You, the viewer, loved the characters in “La Dolce Vita” because Fellini, after all, loved them.

Instead, Sorrentino judges his characters, without indulgence.

He does not love them.

They can even be very unpleasant characters. In this, Sorrentino has had great courage. Very few directors are able to develop their characters while maintaining a detachment from them. Paolo was brilliant and unsparing.

What is Rome today?

It is a fundamental city, the image of Italy. You cannot go to Italy and not see Rome.

A city that foreigners have understood and loved: from Goethe, to Montaigne, to Montesquieu, to Rilke, to mention just a few. But that Italians, at times, do not comprehend.

Io sono moderatamente ottimista. Il cinema italiano vive, grazie a questo film e a questo Oscar, una grande occasione di rilancio. E la città di Roma ha una carta da giocare dal punto di vista del turismo internazionale. Il film è un grande spot per la città di Roma.

Qual è la differenza tra la Roma della “Dolce Vita” di Fellini e quella “Grande bellezza”?

C’è una grande differenza.

Ai personaggi della “Dolce Vita” tu, spettatore, volevi bene. Perché Fellini, in fondo, li amava. Invece Sorrrentino i suoi personaggi li giudica, senza indulgenza. Non li ama.

Possono essere personaggi anche molto sgradevoli. In questo, Sorrentino ha avuto un grande coraggio. Pochissimi registi sono in grado di raccontare i loro personaggi mantenendo un distacco da loro. Paolo è stato bravo e spietato.

Che cosa è Roma, oggi?

E’ una città fondamentale, l’immagine dell’Italia. Non puoi venire in Italia e non vedere Roma. Una città che gli stranieri hanno capito e amato: da Goethe, a Montaigne, a Montesquieu, a Rilke, per dire solo alcuni nomi. Ma che gli italiani a volte non hanno capito.

orrentino and Fellini, “The Great Beauty” and “La Dolce Vita”. After the Oscar won by the Italian film, everyone has written that Paolo Sorrentino’s “The Great Beauty” resembles Federico Fellini’s “La Dolce Vita”. In both films, there is Rome. In both films, there is chaos, the derailment of our society. The wild parties, the dissolution of morals, the loss of any ethical point of reference. And all this, observed by a character who looks at everything with cynicism and dismay. Marcello Mastroianni in Fellini’s film, Servillo in Sorrentino’s. Fellini with his visionary power, with his exceptional talent. Sorrentino with his camerawork framing shots able to transform Rome into a De Chirico painting, and then to fill it with people, crazed people dancing, dancing, as if the end of the world were at hand. The interior design of the future, straight from Milan’s International Furniture Fair Dal Salone del Mobile di Milano, lo stile che dipingerà gli interni del futuro prossimo

A

fter years of luxury as the answer to all demands on the furnishing and interior design market, luxury which took on many meanings - from attention to materials and product quality to excess -, the latest design trend goes in the opposite direction. What is being shown at this year’s International Furniture Fair is stripped down to its bare essentials: spare and understated products, limited use of resources and figurative elements.

A sort of self-imposed slimming diet leading to new design solutions in terms of both appearance and choice of materials. For instance, Daniele Bortotto and Giorgia Zanellato, two young designers launched at the

Salone Satellite, introduce a collection of chairs named La Serenissma, inspired by Venice’s high tide flooding, at Moroso’s stand. The design is deliberately simple and recalls the walkways used to cross Venice’s flooded streets and squares.

This basic structure is covered with moire, nearly shaded, fabrics produced by Rubelli.

Perhaps the only mark left by the past years’ luxury trend is visible in the furnishing collections bearing the name of famous car manufacturers, such as Bentley Home, or of fashion houses like the Fendi home collection. The new “pauperism” trend is marked by the comeback of the minimalist style, a trend that actually never dies but has been a bit less obvious

Dopo anni in cui il lusso appariva essere la risposta comune fornita dalle aziende del design e dell’arredo, lusso che veniva declinato in diversi modi dall’attenzione alla costruzione e alla materia fino al vero e proprio eccesso, il neo-nato stile che emerge dalla nuova edizione del Salone del Mobile di quest’anno va nella direzione di prodotti castigati, a volte severi, parchi nell’uso delle risorse e nella adozione di riferimenti figurativi. Una sorta di cura dimagrante che il design si è autoimposto, con nuove soluzioni che interessano tanto l’aspetto formale che la scelta dei materiali. Un esempio per tutti: Daniele Bortotto e Giorgia Zanellato, giovani designer italiani usciti dal Salone Satellite, presentano da Moroso una collezione di sedute La Serenissima, ispirate all’acqua

alta a Venezia. Il disegno è volutamente elementare e riecheggia le passerelle montate all’innalzarsi della marea.

Su questa semplice struttura vengono appoggiati tessuti marezzati, per non dire sfumati, prodotti da Rubelli.

Del lusso che aveva caratterizzato gli anni passati la traccia più evidente rimane nelle collezioni di arredo che portano il marchio di grandi case automobilistiche, si veda in particolare quest’anno la new entry Bentley Home, oppure di case di moda, confronta ad esempio la collezione Fendi casa.

Rafforza la tendenza pauperistica una nuova vitalità del Minimalismo, corrente eterna per definizione, ma che, nelle ultime edizioni del Salone del Mobile, era in qualche misura appannata. Un altro riferimento che ritroveremo

in the past fairs. Another popular trend this year, poised between pauperism and minimalism, between the East and the West, is the so-called mountain-style design. Probably inspired by the great Charlotte Perriand, there is a wealth of handcarved solid wood canes.

Letting one’s thoughts wander, narrative design.

As a reaction to the return to simplicity, here comes the dream, the fairy-tale.

Influenced by the figure of Piero Fornasetti, the world’s greatest visionarydesigner in the history of design, many companies and designers opted for an oneiric, dream-like style, with “no inhibitions” but with different results. Even the great Philippe Starck has embraced this look, with the Aunts&Uncles collection for Kartell, which strikes, however, as more Almodovar-style.

A deep appreciation for the lessons of the past, especially for the years of Italian but also Danish, Finnish and American design between the forties and mid-sixties, goes on inspiring interior designers, such as the revival of the typical sixties-style leather color for skins.

The line between contemporary and classic furniture manufacturers is becoming increasingly blurred: take a look at Marcel Wanders’ Century collection for Very Wood by Gervasoni.

Another large group of 2014 designs draws inspiration from materials. The trendiest materials are as porous as cork and concrete, as hard as baked clay, with interesting plays of

di Piero Fornasetti, massimo designer-sognatore nella storia del design mondiale, molte aziende e designer, con risultati diversi, si sono abbandonati a un linguaggio onirico, senza inibizioni. Persino il grande Philippe Starck è coinvolto in questa vicenda di racconto e personaggi, con la collezione Aunts&Uncles ovvero Zie e Zii per Kartell forse in questo caso, un po’ più alla Almodovar.

Permane la grande fascinazione per la lezione del passato, soprattutto per gli anni che vanno dai Quaranta alla metà dei Sessanta del design Italiano,

ma anche danese o finlandese o americano, con il perdurare delle riedizioni, delle ispirazioni e dei recuperi. Tornano ad esempio gli anni Settanta, con la dominanza del color cuoio nelle pelli.

L’ondata citazionista è individuabile nello sfumare dei confini tra i produttori di “mobili contemporanei” e quelli che si dedicano da sempre al “classico”. Si confronti, a questo proposito, la collezione Century di Marcel Wanders per Very Wood by Gervasoni.

Un altro grande gruppo di progetti 2014 trae ispirazione dalla materia. I materiali più attuali sono piuttosto porosi come il sughero o il cemento, densi come la ceramica.

E in ogni caso ad essi si sovrappongono intrecci e trafori.

A sottolineare questa tendenza, il valore delle lavorazioni!

Lavorazioni industriali o manuali, indifferentemente e spesso all’unisono. Ma comunque necessariamente esibite, a giustificare specificità, esclusività e differenze di ciascuna produzione.

Anche le scelte cromatiche si adattano a questo omaggio alla materia. Primo fra tutti compare il color rame, decretato colore dell’anno, ma anche tonalità ossidate come il verde petrolio.

Non mancano tutti colori delle muffe, dei funghi e dei fanghi.

An interesting exhibition at Milan’s Furniture Fair reveals the private homes of eight great architects of today Una bella mostra al Salone del Mobile di Milano svela le abitazioni private di otto grandi architetti di oggi

O

ur home reflects our lifestyle, our taste, our habits. Whether a small house, a studio apartment or a mansion, it is our most private and personal space. That is why a house tells about its residents in the sincerest ways. It reveals the personality, the inner self and the small world of its owner.

And whenever we enter someone else’s house, we cannot resist the temptation of taking in the minutest details, because a house never lies.

It is no chance that writer Curzio Malaparte named his house in Capri “A House Like Me”, for he viewed it as a personal and intimate story, as the transposition of architecture from different cultures and contexts into everyday life. The house is the storehouse of one’s memories, dreams and ambitions.

A unique place representing freedom and our most intimate dimension.

A special exhibition held at the International Furniture Fair, features eight extraordinary houses 52

we are allowed to pry into, with one characteristic thing in common: all the owners are great names of contemporary architecture.

Inspired by a quote from Richard Rogers, “a room is the beginning of a city”, the greatest contemporary architects’ homes embody today’s vision and culture of living.

del proprietario. E quando abbiamo la possibilità di entrare all’interno delle case altrui non possiamo resistere alla tentazione di coglierne i più minuti dettagli, proprio perché la casa non mente.

Non a caso, lo scrittore Curzio Malaparte aveva battezzato “Casa come me” la sua villa sull’isola di Capri, che è infatti un racconto intimo e privato, che ricerca nei dettagli e negli spazi della quotidianità i segni e le tracce del modo di vivere l’architettura in culture e contesti diversi. La casa come

deposito delle nostre memorie, dei nostri sogni e delle nostre aspirazioni. Un luogo unico dove ritrovare, in massima libertà, la propria dimensione più intima.

Lo scorso aprile, una mostra speciale allestita dal Salone del Mobile, ha raccolto 8 straordinarie case da “spiare” con una caratteristica particolare: tutti i proprietari sono tra i più grandi architetti contemporanei.

Prendendo spunto anche dall’affermazione di Richard Rogers “a room is the beginning of a city”, le residenze abitate dai massimi architetti contemporanei sono diventate espressione di una visione e di una poetica architettonica esemplificativa della cultura dell’abitare oggi. Il tema della casa, attraverso la lettura iconica e paradigmatica delle “stanze” degli architetti, è stato l’avvio di una riflessione trasversale sulle modalità, le esperienze e le tendenze dell’abitare contemporaneo. Il titolo scelto è dunque molto coerente con il progetto, “Dove vivono gli architetti”.

And then, with the help of architect and set designer Davide Pizzigoni, who has been researching on the space of representation and working with the world’s major opera theatres for many years, she conceived a project describing the private “rooms” of eight among the world’s top architectsShigeru Ban, Mario Bellini, David Chipperfield, Massimiliano and Doriana Fuksas, Zaha Hadid, Marcio Kogan, Daniel Libeskind and Bijoy Jain/Studio Mumbaithrough videos, images,

sound, interviews and reconstructions.

Mario Bellini opens the doors of his Milanese home and is photographed sitting on his spectacular, nine-meters-high staircase-bookcase. Daniel Libeskind’s New York house is filled with books that tell us that he has spent much of his life on the go, describe his transition from European to American culture and the major role played by Milan in the architect’s

(2012) e Un bagno di stelle (2010) –, è stata accolta nelle loro abitazioni per filmarne gli esterni e gli ambienti, e intervistare ciascuno di loro sulla poetica, l’ispirazione e le scelte che hanno guidato il loro percorso progettuale e professionale. E con Davide Pizzigoni, architetto e scenografo, che da anni prosegue le sue ricerche sullo spazio della rappresentazione e collabora con i principali teatri d’opera internazionali, la Molteni ha ideato un progetto per raccontare le

stanze private di Shigeru Ban, Mario Bellini, David Chipperfield, Massimiliano e Doriana Fuksas, Zaha Hadid, Marcio Kogan, Daniel Libeskind e Bijoy Jain/ Studio Mumbai attraverso video, immagini, suoni, testimonianze e ricostruzioni dal vivo. Mario Bellini ha apertro le porte dell’abitazione milanese in esclusiva e si è lasciato fotografare seduto nella sua scenografica scalalibreria, alta nove metri.

Anche la casa di Daniel Libeskind a New York era piena di libri che raccontano molto della sua vita sempre in trasferta e anche il passaggio da una cultura europea a una americana, oltre all’importanza di Milano per un professionista che in questa città ha realizzato i suoi primi grandi progetti. In short, considering that architects usually design other people’s houses, this exhibition, besides satisfying our curiosity, helps us answer some questions: what is a space planner’s house like? Is it really beautiful? Does it reflect his/her works?

What goes on every day in these rooms, which are the results of carefully studied architectural plans and renderings?

event is based on the belief that, among all the arts of designing, domestic architecture is the most open to development and experimentation, as it easily combines architecture and interior design.

A journey from Shigeru Ban’s Japan to Marcio Kogan’s South America, through Zaha Hadid’s England, a journey through eight 100-squaremeter installations showing how the places of living change in different cultural contexts. As a result, it is an interactive exhibition space exploring the culture of living, but also the choices architects make and what they are magnificently obsessed with.

Insomma, visto che di solito gli architetti le case le disegnano agli altri, questa mostra, oltre che a soddisfare le nostre curiosità, ci ha aiutato a rispondere ad alcune domande: come sono gli ambienti vitali di chi ha fatto della progettazione dello spazio la propria professione?

Sono veramente belli?

Rispecchiano le altre opere dell’autore?

E come sono utilizzati quotidianamente quegli ambienti perfetta- mente disegnati e riprodotti con planimetrie e ren- der sugli

elaborati progettuali?

Il concept dell’evento risiedeva nella convinzione che tra tutte le discipline progettuali, l’architettura domestica sia quella più ricca di sviluppi e più aperta alla sperimentazione, in quanto capace di coniugare architettura e design. Un viaggio dal Giappone di Shigeru Ban all’America Latina di Marcio Kogan, passando per l’Inghilterra di Zaha Hadid, attraverso otto installazioni di centro metri quadrati l’una per raccontare come cambiano i luoghi dell’abitare nelle diverse culture.

Il risultato è stato uno spazio espositivo interattivo attraverso il quale scoprire la cultura dell’abitare, le scelte e, diciamolo pure, le magnifiche ossessioni degli architetti.

The event takes place in Rosa Grand’s Fontana Room, an exclusive lounge with a view to the square after which it is named, decorated with light sculptures of Marco Lodola.

talian fashion, a phenomenon of worldwide success, was born in Florence in the early fifties, on February 12, 1951, when Giovanni Battista Giorgini held a fashion show at Villa Torrigiani, before an audience of American buyers and journalists, with the creations by the Fontana sisters, Jole Veneziani, Fabiani, Pucci, Noberasco, Carosa and Schuberth sent down the catwalk. From 1952 to 1982, Palazzo Pitti’s White Room was the main stage of Italian fashion and, in 1954, the Florence Center for Italian Fashion was established.

This association, aimed at promoting fashion events, celebrates its 60th anniversary this year and, during the coming Pitti Immagine Uomo show (June 17-20, 2014) it 60

will launch a program of special events starring the five Florentine fashion houses par excellence: Salvatore Ferragamo, Emilio Pucci, Gucci, Ermanno Scervino and Roberto Cavalli.

Gucci was started in Florence in 1921 as a company specializing in handmade leather goods. The founder Guccio Gucci, after having worked in well-known hotels throughout Europe, started several small shops in Florence selling common leather goods, but also travel and horse-riding accessories.

That is when and how the brand’s signature items were born: the bamboo handle bag, the horsebit loafer, the Flora scarf specially made for Grace Kelly. Today, Gucci is one of the world’s most popular and successful fashion houses, with over 300 stores throughout the world.

The brand’s headquarters is still housed in Palazzo Pucci, at 6 Via de’ Pucci, and the company is now run by Emilio’s daughter, Laudomia.

Born into a family of artists, Roberto Cavalli rose to fame in the early seventies by inventing an innovative leather printing technique.

His printed jeans with leather inlays, brocades and animalier patterns, and his glamorous style appealed to an international clientele and, in 1972, he opened his first boutique in Saint Tropez. In 2010, he celebrated the 40th

anniversary of the maison with a photographic book featuring some of the stars he has dressed over the years: Kate Moss, Madonna, Sharon Stone, Jennifer Lopez, Gwyneth Paltrow, Beyoncé Knowles, Charlize Theron.

The ongoing blend of knowledge and experimentation leads them to the creation of products combining craftsmanship and innovation: the Ermanno Scervino company was started in the hills of Florence in 2007.

The knitwear factory, the atelier, the clothing and sample departments, the workshops are all located at the Florentine headquarters and all production stages are carried out under the watchful eye of Ermanno Daelli and Toni Scervino, who follow all research work and processing to ensure the highest level of artisan quality.

ichelangelo Buonarroti, the only living artist included in Giorgio Vasari’s Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Painters, Sculptors, and Architects, fought many battles and engaged in a long series of quarrels throughout his life: the row with Pietro Torrigiani, who struck Michelangelo on the nose, in Florence’s Brancacci Chapel, leaving him permanently disfigured; the misunderstandings with Pope Julius II, who would have preferred him more submissive, like the other artists of the time; the dispute with Agnolo Doni over the payment for the wonderful Tondo named after the Florentine merchant, the only panel painting attributed to Michelangelo and kept at the Uffizi Gallery; not to mention the many arguments

Michelangelo would have had with Cosimo I de’ Medici had he accepted the Grand Duke’s offer to return to Florence from Rome where he had settled by then. Michelangelo lived his whole life, which began in a small town near Arezzo that now carries his name, Caprese Michelangelo, between Florence, Bologna, Carrara and Rome. While Carrara was the town where the artist found his first snow-white marbles, Bologna was the place of his boyhood years and Florence awakened his first artistic passions, it was the city where he trained (in the gardens opposite San Marco under the careful coaching eye of Lorenzo the Magnificent who welcomed him in the palazzo of Via Larga and Ghirlandaio’s workshop) and developed political awareness, which

La vita di Michelangelo, avviatasi in una piccola cittadina dell’aretino che oggi porta anche il suo nome, Caprese Michelangelo, si distese quasi esclusivamente nei viaggi tra Firenze, Bologna, Carrara e Roma; e se Carrara fu il luogo nel quale lo scultore scelse i suoi primi bianchissimi marmi, Bologna fu importante per la sua gioventù e dove Firenze rappresentò le prime passioni d’arte, la formazione (tra i giardini, dinanzi San Marco, di Lorenzo il Magnifico che l’accolse nel palazzo di via Larga e l’animata bottega del Ghirlandaio) e l’acquisizione di una coscienza politica che ha forse il suo capolavoro nel maestoso David oggi dominante l’Accademia, Roma fu la città della maturità, della pittura ma anche della scultura e dell’architettura nelle

In 1534, Michelangelo designed the Piazza del Campidoglio in Rome

culminated in the imposing David, now at the Accademia Gallery. Rome was the city of his maturity, of painting but also sculpture and architecture, in their fullest and most intense expressions. Michelangelo was hailed as a genius while still young, and he remained such till the end of his days.

He is said to have been intent on sculpting and chiseling the Pietà Rondanini, barely a week before his death. But he is probably best known for the powerful frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, or for the harmonious elegance of Piazza del Campidoglio, designed in 1546 when Michelangelo was 71 years old.

Michelangelo was also the man who wrote poignant poems for Vittoria Colonna and Tommaso de’ Cavalieri, and the artist who designed the

magnificent Medicean Chapels in the Church of San Lorenzo in Florence and the “secret room” where he stayed hidden for three months during the siege of Florence, who had the Laurenziana Library built for one of the Medicean popes, Clement VII, and created the Bacchus, which still smiles to the Bargello Museum….

In the last stage of his life, Michelangelo poured all his passion and skill into architecture and his artistic career culminated in the designing of the dome of St. Peter’s Basilica, which he never got to see completed but, as he wrote in his letters, was one of his most deeply-felt masterpieces: the dome was supposed to be erected in the same place as the monument to Julius II. Ma quello che di lui forse più si ricorda sono le possenti immagini che animano l’ampia volta della Cappella Sistina o l’armoniosa eleganza di piazza del Campidoglio, ideata nel 1546 per quell’augusto spazio sulle rovine del Foro, quando Michelangelo aveva già 71 anni e ancora dominava la scena artistica della città dei papi. Ma di Michelangelo si ricordano anche le intense poesie dedicate a Vittoria Colonna e a Tommaso de’ Cavalieri; come si ricordano

le maestose Cappelle Medicee di San Lorenzo in Firenze e la “stanza segreta” nella quale rimase nascosto per tre mesi durante l’assedio della città, oltre che la Biblioteca Laurenziana che progettò per volontà di uno dei pontefici Medici, Clemente VII e il Bacco che ancora sorride a chi lo guardi nelle sale del Bargello…

Tuttavia, nell’ultimo tempo della sua vita sarà l’architettura, costruita di forme lontane apparentemente dall’uomo, a dominare la sua arte che avrà come summa della sua vita la progettazione della cupola di San Pietro, che non potrà mai veder completata ma che come si evince dalle sue lettere fu uno dei suoi capolavori più sofferti: la cupola avrebbe dovuto trovarsi nello stesso luogo del suo monumento a Giulio II. Il suo ennesimo incompiuto.

to understand how, in that space, the places of otia alternated with the places of negotia. The gardens complement the buildings ,fountains and monuments they are filled with, works by famous artists such as Vignola, Pirro Ligorio and Gian Lorenzo Bernini, all perfectly reflecting the Renaissance or Baroque style.

What are, in your opinion, the most fascinating parts of the Gardens?

The gardens have undergone many changes over the centuries, as every pope left his own “mark” and in some cases, at the expense of what had been done by the predecessors.

The spots that best embody and reflect the spirit of the time are the Casina of Pius 76

IV, dating back to the mid1500s, and the Courtyard of the Statues, which is part of the museum collection but stands as a symbol of the relation between built and natural environments.

And among the monuments the gardens are scattered with, which makes you appreciate the natural environment the most?

In my opinion, the most fascinating monument is the Fontana dello Scoglio o dell’Aquilone, a fountain designed by Lorenzo Bernini, a man-made rocky mountain with water flowing and spouting and the coats of arms of Pope Paul V Borghese dominating the whole composition. Non far from

Quali sono, a Suo vedere, le parti più affascinanti del percorso nei Giardini?

I giardini sono molto cambiati nel corso dei secoli, in quanto ogni pontefice lasciava il proprio “segno”, in alcuni casi a spese dell’assetto dei suoi predecessori. I luoghi che meglio hanno conservato lo spirito del tempo sono la Casina di Pio IV, della metà del Cinquecento, e il Cortile delle Statue, inserito

nel percorso dei musei ma simbolo proprio del rapporto tra costruito e verde.

E dei monumenti che li animano, quale trova più significativo per apprezzare la natura del luogo?

Il luogo a mio parere più affascinante comprende la Fontana dello Scoglio o dell’Aquilone, opera di Gian Lorenzo Bernini, montagna di roccia ideata dalla mano umana, con l’acqua che vi scorre, zampilla e gorgoglia e gli stemmi del pontefice regnante Paolo V Borghese, che dominano la scenografica composizione.

Non lontano vi è l’orto del pontefice, piccolo appezzamento coltivato dalle Clarisse che hanno sede nel convento attiguo, che ci ricorda l’antica presenza di

Was does a heritage such as the Gardens mean to a city with a millenary history like Rome?

The gardens are as crucial for our understanding of the history of Rome as its complex urban system is. The passage from the gardens of convents and buildings, small walled spaces, to the gardens of the villas of princes and popes, vast stretches of land divided into various sections- from flowerbeds to woods- runs parallel

to the city’s historic and social changes. A garden, whether carefully arranged and shaped by man or naturalistic-style, expresses the political ideology at that time. It is no chance that the backdrop of the Sun King’s absolute power was the formal Garden of Versailles, whereas the British, with their democratic ideals and Enlightenment thinkers, preferred landscape gardens where nature runs free in the form of valleys and hillocks, rivulets and thickets.

Il passaggio dai giardini dei conventi e dei palazzi, piccoli spazi racchiusi da alti muri, ai giardini delle ville di principi e papi, con estensioni enormi

e con articolazioni in diversi “comparti” - dalle aiuole di fiori ai boschi accompagna in parallelo le trasformazioni storiche e sociali della città. Nella forma dei giardini, nel loro essere rigorosamente plasmati e organizzati dalla mano dell’uomo o nell’essere libera espressione della natura, si esprime l’ideologia del momento storico di riferimento. Non è un caso se lo scenario del potere assoluto del Re Sole fosse il meraviglioso giardino formale di Versailles, mentre gli inglesi con le loro istanze democratiche e illuministe preferivano i giardini paesaggistici, nei quali la natura si esprime in valli e montagnole, corsi d’acqua e boschetti, senza alcuna limitazione o costrizione.

n invisible thread connects Rome and Genoa in 2014: Scuderie del Quirinale and Palazzo Ducale introduce the works by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo within the framework of a common project showcased in two separate exhibitions.

The Roman exhibition explores the artist Frida Kahlo and her relations with the artistic and cultural movements of her age, while the exhibition in Genoa focuses on the influence the artist’s private life, in particular, her husband Diego, had on her artistic career.

culture, Frida Kahlo is one of the most fascinating examples of inextricable art-life bond in the history of the twentieth century. Her paintings not only reflect her life, marked by the physical trauma she suffered as a result of the terrible accident she was involved in at the age of 17, but they also blend in with the history and spirit of her time, providing a faithful picture of the social and cultural changes of the world she lived in. And yet, the exhibition’s main theme is self-representation, which Frida expresses through a variety of

languages. Showing at Scuderie del Quirinale until August 31 is the first retrospective exhibition devoted to the artist in Italy and includes about 130 paintings and drawings. From September 20 through February 2015, the exhibition on Frida and her inner and outer world will be held at Genoa’s Palazzo Ducale.

The Cascine Park is back to its original splendor with the new Opera Theatre Le Cascine tornano a splendere a partire dal nuovo teatro dell’Opera

ame: Florence Opera. Distinctive features: starting this year it will not only host large operatic productions but space will also be given to other musical genres. It’s the new-born among Italian and European opera houses, having just recently opened at the entrance to the Cascine Park alongside the Stazione Leopolda tradeshow venue and some 200 metres away from the old municipal theatre.

This is also precisely where an extraordinary project to renovate the city’s largest public park will begin.

FLORENCE OPERA With its bulk, its plays of light, and a complex system of sloping terraces that nearly reach the enormous square, it already represents the admission ticket for not just 80

the park but also the new face of the city. It’s contemporary, functional and open to social gatherings and the arts. The concert halls emerge like boulders from the terraces, which will soon be occupied by restaurants and bookshops. The large hall, which seats 1,800, is furnished with three movable set platforms for quick scene changes or staging more than one show at a time. The smaller hall seats 1,100 and is mainly for concerts. The 2,200-seat open-air auditorium will be open in the summer. Picking up on the idea of a Greek acropolis, it offers breath-taking views of downtown Florence”.

On the roof of the small hall is a silhouette of a stone garden, a labyrinth reminiscent of the Boboli Gardens that blends in with the city. Tosca and Othello will be staged for the

Incastonata sul tetto, la cavea da 2.200 posti per l’estate, che riprende l’idea dell’acropoli greca e offre una vista mozzafiato sulla Firenze storica e, mancando i parapetti, si crea un «effetto di volo». Il colpo d’occhio è straordinario. Sul tetto della sala piccola si staglia il giardino di pietra, labirinto che riecheggia i giardini di Boboli, in armonia con la città. Galileo Galilei: celebrating 450 years since his birth. The Italian 1600s in Florence and Rome Galileo Galilei, i luoghi di origine a 450 anni dalla sua nascita. Seicento italiano tra Firenze e Roma

H

e is usually portrayed as a proud man with cloudy eyes because of the condition his father Vincenzio had him treated for since his youth years and which painfully marked the last stage of his life.

His last years was spent in the hills of Florence, in the villa Il Gioiello of Arcetri (exceptionally open to the public this year, on the occasion of the 450th anniversary of his birth) tending to the vineyards during the breaks from his studies and work.

He is usually portrayed as an old man elegantly dressed in black, with a white shirt and beard surrounding his face, a man greatly admired 84

by his contemporaries, although most of the cultural personalities of his time were very doubtful and perplexed about his discoveries and methods used.

Galileo Galilei, born in Pisa in 1564 into an aristocratic family of reduced fortune, was the man who revolutionized the approach to science, as his “method” based on the observation and analysis of phenomena forever changed our understanding of physics, philosophy, mathematics and astronomy and even the language used to express them.

Galileo was, in fact, among the members of the La Crusca Academy, which still jealously guards his

Galileo was a man of his time and of all times.

Though a scientist of deep knowledge, he dealt with astrology for economic reasons and, thus, not only for his daughters and himself, but for anyone who required his help.

Though a layman, he had to kneel and bow his head before the Cardinals InquisitorsGeneral gathered in the Dominican Convent of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva and, on June 22, 1633, after eighteen years of disputes with the Church, he was forced to abjure all he had professed 86

to believe in. However, the sentence proved to be less harsh than expected, as formal imprisonment was commuted to house arrest, at first at his friend Archbishop Ascanio Piccolomini’s residence in Siena, then he was allowed to return to his villa in Arcetri, where he spent the last nine years of his life isolated from the world (nonetheless, he was able to have some of his major works published in those years), but close to his beloved daughter Virginia, who took the name Maria

Galileo fu in tutto uomo del suo tempo e di ogni tempo; sapientissimo per motivi economici si occupò di stilare temi astrologici, non soltanto per le figlie e per sé dunque, ma anche per quanti gliene facevano richiesta; colto e a suo modo indipendente nel

pensiero dovette inginocchiarsi e chinare il capo - il 22 giugno 1633, nella sala capitolare del convento domenicano di Santa Maria sopra Minerva di Roma - dinanzi ai Cardinali inquisitori generali di Santa Romana Chiesa e dopo 18 anni di contrasti abiurare a quanto fino a quel momento erano state le sue più salde convinzioni. La condanna dei Cardinali si dimostrò meno crudele del previsto, almeno nei primi tempi, quando poté risiedere a Siena presso Ascanio Piccolomini, anche lui principe della Chiesa, ma poi si fece più restrittiva nei nove anni di permanenza ad Arcetri prima della morte, avvenuta nel 1642, isolato (non poi troppo tuttavia, visto che riuscì anche da lì a far pubblicare alcune sue fondamentali opere) per quanto prossimo al

While Galileo spent the last stage of his life in Rome and Arcetri, his most fruitful years as a scholar were those spent in Padua- from 1592 to 1610, where he was appointed to the chair of mathematics by the glorious Republic of Venice, in his own words, “the best eighteen years of my life” -, and the time he enjoyed at the Medicean Court in Florence where, a successful teacher by then, he was appointed “Head Mathematician in Pisa and Head Philosopher of the Grand Duke of Tuscany”, but was exempted from teaching and living in Pisa.

Galileo’s was a life of discoveries that still excite

surprise and admiration, but struggling between the need to bring additional income into the household ( wherever he lived, he had a laboratory to create lenses and small telescopes) and the wish to prove the validity of his discoveries, which was finally granted, though one century after his death, with the tomb erected in his honor in the Church of Santa Croce, along the banks of the Arno River that leads from Florence to his native town, Pisa.

n the words of Vasari, it was “the modern manner”. For the rest of the world, it was a one-of-a-kind artistic season, during which genius and audacity led to the creation of sublime masterpieces forged by two key figures of the time, Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. We are now able to enjoy so much beauty in one place: on show at Palazzo Strozzi until July 20, 2014 is the great exhibition Pontormo and Rosso Fiorentino. Diverging Paths of Mannerism, which gathers, for the very first time, major works by the two artists from Italian and foreign collections, most of which specially restored for the occasion.

The exhibition is also a journey through the parallel lives of these artists who, at the end of their artistic career, got close again: Pontormo and Rosso were both trained under Andrea del Sarto, while maintaining a strongly independent approach and enormous freedom of expression. Pontormo, always a favorite with the Medicis, was a painter open to stylistic variety and to a renewal of the traditional approach to composition. Rosso Fiorentino, on the other hand, clung more tightly to tradition, though he had the audacity to be creative and original, influenced also 88

by Cabbalistic literature and esoteric works. The former had a more naturalistic approach and was close to Leonardo, whereas the latter was greatly influenced by the Michelangelesque style. The Florentine exhibition, which includes over eighty works, features about fifty paintings (on wood, on canvas and removed frescoes) by the two artists, about 70% of their entire production. The exhibition, curated by Antonio Natali, director of the Uffizi Gallery, and by Carlo Faciani, art history professor, is based on the belief that each artist responded in his own personal way to art.

Being actually designed as two monographic overviews, the exhibition displays the works

by Pontormo and Rosso in chronological order, allowing viewers to better understand the marked differences between the two painters.

Uno più naturalista, vicino a Leonardo, l’altro influenzato da suggestioni michelangiolesche. La rassegna fiorentina, che comprende più di 80 opere, potrà offrire al visitatore la possibilità di ammirare circa 50 dipinti (tavole, tele ed affreschi staccati) dei due artisti, un insieme che rappresenta il 70% della loro produzione. Inoltre disegni, arazzi e incisioni, affiancati da tavole dei loro maestri: Andrea del Sarto e Fra’ Bartolomeo.

La mostra, curata da Antonio Natali, direttore della Galleria degli Uffizi e da Carlo Falciani, docente di storia dell’arte, manifesta la convinzione che ciascuno dei due artisti rappresentasse una autonoma voce artistica. Lo svolgimento è stato quindi pensato come due percorsi monografici dove opere del Pontormo e del Rosso vengono messe in sequenza cronologica, in modo da consentire la migliore lettura delle profonde differenze espressive fra i due pittori.

irl with a Pearl Earring is one of the world’s bestknown, most beloved and copied works of art. This undisputed “pop icon”, Vermeer’s masterpiece, will be for a few months, until May 25, 2014, on show at Palazzo Fava in Bologna, just steps away from Starhotels Excelsior. The star of an ultra-sophisticated exhibition on Dutch painting’s Golden Age, curated by Marco Goldin and by Emilie Gordenker, director of the Mauritshuis Museum in The Hague, where the masterwork

by Veemer is kept and which all the paintings on display in Bologna come from.

The arrival of the painting in Italy is the result of two-yearlong negotiations, from the moment the Mauritshuis was closed for major restoration and extension works. The museum will reopen to the public on June 27, 2014. In the meantime, part of the collection has been moved to some other venues in The Hague, while the core of the collection, the most stunning pieces, have been sent out on loan to Japan, to the United States and, as the only European city and last stop for Girl with a Pearl Earring before its return trip home, to Bologna and Palazzo Fava.

“It is obviously a great honour for me to have been able to bring this masterpiece to Italy for the first time- says Marco Goldin- I would love to have viewers look at this painting not only as a pop icon, but also as the sublime representation of painted beauty, as the place of the absolute”. The masterpiece will be in good company: another 36 pieces from the same museum, major works of art specially chosen

for the venue in Bologna.

More Vermeer, but also four paintings by Rembrandt, Frans Hals, Ter Borch, Claesz, Van Goyen, Van Honthorst, Hobbema, Van Ruisdael, Steen, that is, all the leading exponents of Dutch art’s Golden Age. In addition to the exhibition, Bologna hosts Around Vermeer, a tribute to Vermeer by twenty-five Italian contemporary artists, selected

by Marco Goldin according to their conceptual kinship with Vermeer, in particular, with his use of light, whether figurative or abstract artists.

A Bologna sarà infatti accompagnato da 36 altre opere dello stesso Museo, sempre di qualità eccelsa, scelte Emilie Gordenker, direttrice del appositamente per la sede Mauritshuis Museum de L’Aia bolognese: ancora Veemer, poi dove il capolavoro di Vermeer è quattro Rembrandt, Frans Hals, conservato, e dal quale provengono Ter Borch, Claesz, Van Goyen, tutti i dipinti in esposizione a Van Honthorst, Hobbema, Van Bologna. oMA, New York’s Museum of Modern Art, located on 53rd Street just two blocks away from Starhotels The Michelangelo, houses a great exhibition on the French artist Paul Gauguin till June 9. Born in Paris in 1848, Gauguin was certainly one of the greatest Post-Impressionist artists. The epitome of the artist-rebel, he lived his private life and artistic career overwhelmed by a feeling of discontent and longing for something else, which spurred him to travel in different regions of the world, before landing in Tahiti and Hiva Oa, a small island in the South Pacific.

MoMA’s exhibition, Gauguin: Metamorphoses, showcases a lesser-known aspect of the French painter’s art production. The exhibition focuses on prints and transfer drawings, about 130 works, and some 30 related paintings and sculptures.

It is the first major monographic exhibition on Paul Gauguin ever presented at MoMa, curated

by Starr Figura, who works in the museum’s drawing and prints department, and featuring loans from over 50 96

different collections, national and international, public and private.

Many have never been shown in the United States and describe Gauguin as an artist who enjoyed experimenting with different mediums and was influenced by them, creating darker works as compared to the color-saturated Tahitian paintings he is best known for. The exhibition

offers the extraordinary opportunity to learn about the artist’s need to go beyond normality and express all his originality through the use of different mediums, such as woodcarving and printing.

The exhibition includes Gauguin’s most famous sculptures in wood, the Oviri (Savage) series, which the artist considered to be his masterpiece and a sort of self-portrait and that were supposed to adorn his grave. Not to be missed.

How Fernand Léger changed the vision and representation of the modern city Come cambiò la visione e la comunicazione della città moderna nell’opera di Fernand Léger

C

oming directly from the Philadelphia Museum of Art where it met with huge success, the exhibition on Fernand Léger’s representations of the modern city lands in Venice at the Correr Museum, located in Piazza San Marco just 500 meters away from Starhotels Splendid Venice, until June 2, 2014. “Léger. The Vision of the Contemporary City 1910 – 1930 is the first big exhibition on the French artist to be held in Italy and includes over one hundred works, of which about sixty by Léger himself, and is divided into five sections: The Metropolis Before the Great War, The Painter of the City, Advertising, Performing Arts, Space. Among the works on show is the extraordinary La Ville, the painting that marked the beginning of the most experimental and cubist-futurist phase of Léger’s artistic career, sent out on loan from the Philadelphia Museum of Art together with a collection of another twenty-five major works. In addition to this extraordinary painting, which may be 106

considered the highlight of the exhibition, a number of precious works from private and public European and American collections explore Léger’s relationship with the leading avant-garde figures of his time, as the exhibition includes major works by Duchamp, Picabia, Robert Delaunay, El Lissitzky, Mondrian and Le Corbusier, all artists who, alongside Léger, developed a new, experimental approach to urban depiction, ranging from cubism to futurism, from constructivism to neoplasticism. The exhibition focuses on the artistic outcome of the critical twenty-year period between 1910 and 1930. Fernand Léger’s art production can be described as truly pioneering, both for his multidisciplinary concept of art- the artist explored many artistic fields, from painting to cinema to theatre- and for his attempt at changing the forms of painting in order to meet the demands of modern urban life, in keeping with the phenomenon that, later on, in the postwar period, would be labeled “mass communication”.

Dopo il successo ottenuto al Philadelphia Museum of Art, il Museo Correr di Venezia, situato in Piazza San Marco a soli 500 metri dallo Starhotels Splendid Venice, presenta fino al 2 giugno prossimo le rappresentazioni della città contemporanea di Fernand Léger. La mostra dal titolo “Léger. La visione della città contemporanea 1910 - 1930“ è la prima grande esposizione sull’opera dell’artista francese e presenta oltre 100 opere di cui più di sessanta di Léger in un percorso diviso in cinque sezioni: La metropoli prima della Grande Guerra, Il pittore della città, La Pubblicità, Lo Spettacolo, Lo Spazio. Tra gli importanti prestiti spicca lo straordinario dipinto “La Ville“, un quadro che dà avvio alla fase più sperimentale e cubo-futurista della sua produzione, concesso eccezionalmente in prestito dal Philadelphia Museum of Art insieme ad un nucleo di altre 25 importanti opere. Accanto a questo straordinario dipinto, che si può considerare il focus dell’esposizione, una serie d’importanti opere provenienti da collezioni pubbliche e private europee e statunitensi, permetteranno ai visitatori

anche di approfondire la sua relazione con i protagonisti di quella fertile stagione dell’avanguardia: la produzione di Fernand Léger dialogherà nel percorso espositivo con preziosi capolavori di autori di quel periodo, tra cui Duchamp, Picabia, Robert Delaunay, El Lissitzky, Mondrian, Le Corbusier, tutti artisti che come Léger hanno contribuito a rinnovare l’idea della rappresentazione urbana, attraverso una sperimentazione che va dal cubismo al futurismo, dal costruttivismo al neoplasticismo. La mostra potrà essere quindi un momento di valutazione degli esiti artistici di quel cruciale ventennio compreso tra gli anni Dieci e Venti del ‘900.

L’opera di Fernand Léger è in questa direzione davvero pioneristica sia per la sua concezione pluridisciplinare - l’artista si mosse in ambiti diversi, dall’arte, al cinema, al teatro - che per lo sforzo di cambiare le forme della pittura, corrispondendo così alle nuove esigenze della realtà urbana, in linea con quel fenomeno che nel secondo dopoguerra verrà catalogato come comunicazione di massa.

The famous Viennese painter, one of the leading exponents of the Art Nouveau and Vienna Secession movement, who passionately pursued the ideal of sublime and precious beauty, is on view till July 13, 2014 in Klimt. The Origins of a Myth. A wonderful selection of works, organized with the cooperation of Vienna’s Belvedere Museum.

Twelve of Klimt’s oil paintings are showcased at Palazzo Reale, just steps from Starhotels Rosa Grand. An extraordinary 108

Suffice is to mention some of the city’s artistic wonders, such as the Veiled Christ in the Sansevero Chapel (Via Francesco de Sanctis, 19), Caravaggio’s Seven Acts of Mercy tucked into the church of Pio Monte della Misericordia in the heart of Spaccanapoli, surely one of the strangest and most breathtaking paintings in all of art history, the Spagnolo and Sanfelice buildings in the Sanità quarter, with their world-famous stairs, and the San Carlo Theatre, Europe’s oldest opera theatre (Via San Carlo 98). Not far from here, Palazzo Roccella has been housing Naples’s Records Center for Contemporary Arts since 2005. PAN, Palazzo delle Arti di Napoli, is the city’s first public structure set up to be used exclusively and permanently as Center for the Contemporary Arts. T

he people of Trieste are lucky. They live in a beautiful city by the sea embraced by the Karst Plateau. Because of its history, this merchant seaside town with its international port has become an intersection of races, cultures and religions that have made the natives especially open, tolerant, sophisticated and enamoured of life.

The city’s position along the gulf has favoured a close relationship with the sea at its heart and the beautiful Barcola coastline that stretches from the town to Miramare Castle. This becomes the locals’ beach in summer. Boating and especially sailing are very popular in the gulf, with hundreds of sailboats of all shapes and sizes taking part in the world-famous Barcolana Regatta each fall.

As an alternative to the seaside,

you can stroll along the Karst Plateau to admire its peculiar vegetation of Mediterranean scrub and continental Alpine flora. The “Carsiana” Botanical Garden collects aspects of native flora like heath, scrub, underwood, doline and rock vegetation. Throughout the Karst are several eateries, agriturismi (holiday farms) and osmizze (shops selling wine and local products during the high Austrian tourist season) offering traditional products from the surrounding area.

Like its culture, Trieste’s cuisine reflects a juxtaposition of various nationalities, including borrowings from Slavic and Austro-Hungarian cuisines and excellent wines like Terrano and Istrian Malvasia. Cuisine from Istria and Veneto prevail in the seaside restaurants where fish is preferred, with

Se non si va al mare si possono fare delle passeggiate sul Carso, con la sua particolare vegetazione in cui convivono sia la macchia mediterranea che la flora continentale alpina. Il giardino botanico “La Carsiana” raccoglie gli aspetti della flora autoctona (landa, boscaglia, sottobosco, dolina e vegetazione rupestre).

Sul Carso ci sono numerose trattorie, agriturismi e “osmizze” (nate come punti vendita di vino e prodotti locali durante la dominazione austriaca) in cui si possono degustare prodotti tipici della zona.

La cucina triestina, come la sua cultura, risulta dall’accostamento di varie nazionalità, con molti apporti della gastronomia slava e austroungarica e da ottimi vini

Finally, a visit to the San Giusto Hill with its cathedral and castle ”two symbols of the city” is a must.

La storica piazza Unità d’Italia con il suo Municipio, è aperta sul mare e arricchita da imponenti palazzi ottocenteschi. Lungo le Rive sorgono palazzi neoclassici e in centro, lungo le vie e le piazze principali vi sono pregevoli esempi di liberty. E non si può tralasciare una visita al colle di San Giusto con la Cattedrale e il Castello, simboli della città.

The school has always offered educational programmes across all sectors, ranging from design to visual arts, from fashion to management, offering the possibility to combine local knowhow with new technologies. The result is an amazing fusion of the ‘home-made’ and the truly innovative. And it is thanks to this ‘fusion’ of old and new that the IED Florence is launching a new course in hospitality, design and management with the aim of developing the professional skills needed to turn an ordinary consumer into a special guest. This is a partnership between two different fields, each dedicated, in its own way, to Italian style and design.
