Secrets and fun facts about the city’s metro stations
TEXT Ugo Rossi
As you travel on Milan’s metro system, have you ever wondered about the origins of some of its station names? We’ll tell you about them! Our journey begins at QT8. This name has a very specific meaning: Q stands for Quartiere, or neighbourhood, T refers to Triennale and 8 indicates the eighth edition of the exhibition run by Milan’s Palazzo dell’Arte e dell’Architetura. Construction in the district took place in 1946 and 1947, with the goal of providing accommodation for the displaced of the war. The development involved eleven different models of homes, designed by the successful architects in a national competition. Green spaces were an important priority, with the creation of public gardens, playing fields for children, green areas around high-rise housing and a huge

park occupying some 350,000 square metres, which would become a landmark for the whole city. Continuing on the same metro line, we come to another station with a curious name: Precoto. The origin of this name is shrouded in mystery, and there are several interpretations. One theory suggests that the area was once a barren landscape of dry, sunscorched fields, resulting in
the Milanese dialect word pree, meaning fields and land. But the most likely explanation takes us back to the medieval name Pulcoctum, thought to be the ancient name of this area. Finally, our journey takes us to Cascina Gobba, on the green Line 2. This station name is rooted in the history of an ancient rural community called Gobba (or Goeubba in dialect), home to a renowned tratoria of the same name, on the former site of a farmstead (cascina). Historically, the area was traversed by a tramline that connected Milan to Vimercate and Vaprio; trams were powered originally with steam, and later with electricity. An interesting detail: Cascina Gobba is the only station in the Milan metro system with four platforms. Next time you take the metro, look out for the station names; they might conceal stories yet to be discovered!

MILANO AT A SLOW PACE
Exploring the city’s most beautiful piazzas, with fragments of stories and emotions hidden within
TEXT Martina Olivieri
THESE PIAZZAS ARE VERITABLE
GATHERING PLACES, WHERE MILANO’S SOUL COMES TO LIFE
Piazza Fontana: Piermarini’s fountain was the first fountain in Milan, dated 1782. Only minutes away is the church of San Bernardino alle Ossa.
Piazza San Lorenzo: famous for the Basilica di San Lorenzo, one of Milan’s oldest churches. A recommended restaurant in the area is Nautilus Trattoria di Mare.
Piazza XXV Aprile: with the arch of Porta Garibaldi, built in 1826. Men who love trendy shopping should go to Eral 55, the boutique for men who want to stand out since 1976.
Milano is a city that speaks also through its squares, symbolic spaces where art, architecture and daily life intertwine. From the imposing Piazza Duomo, the city’s throbbing heart, to the lively Piazza Gae Aulenti, one of Milano’s more contemporary sights, every corner offers a unique mix of the past and future. These piazzas are not only landmarks for tourists, but veritable gathering places, where Milano’s soul comes to life amidst cultural events, street markets, historic cafés and breathtaking views. Let’s start from Piazza Duomo, the heart of the city and an iconic spot that lures both tourists and locals with its beauty and history. The Piazza is dominated by the magnificent Cathedral of Santa Maria Nascente, beter known as the Duomo of Milano, a
masterwork of Gothic architecture, with its spires, sculpted statues and the famous gilded Madonnina, the statue of the Virgin Mary that soars above the city. In addition to the Duomo, the Piazza is lined with historic buildings and interesting sights, such as the Galleria Vitorio Emanuele II, a prestigious shopping arcade known for its high-end boutiques, historic cafés and modern restaurants. Located on Piazza Duomo is also Palazzo Reale, which today houses major art exhibitions, and Museo del Novecento, the home to a priceless collection of 20th-century works of art. Piazza Duomo is the ideal starting point for exploring Milano’s major shopping, cultural and culinary destinations. Just steps away from the Duomo, hidden amidst the city’s modern streets, is Piazza Mercanti, a fascinating corner full of
the charm of medieval Milano. Once the heart of the city’s economic and political life, the Piazza had been the commercial and administrative center since the 13th century. It is encircled by historic buildings, such as Palazzo della Ragione, the former headquarters of the court of law, Loggia degli Osii, with its elegant marble balconies, and Casa dei Panigarola. This square is still filled with the atmosphere of medieval Milano, with its brick arches, aristocratic coats of arms and architectural details that speak of centuries of history. Not far from here is Piazza Affari, Milano’s financial heart, the home of the

Stock Exchange building, the imposing Palazzo Mezzanote, a rationalist-style building dating back to the 1930s. One of the Piazza’s most iconic elements is the provocative L.O.V.E. sculpture by Maurizio Catelan, depicting a giant hand with the middle finger sticking up, a contemporary work of art inviting to reflect upon the relationship between power and finance. We then head towards Piazza Castello, dominated by the imposing Castello Sforzesco, one of Europe’s grandest Renaissance fortresses. Surrounded by large treelined avenues and by the spectacular fountain on Piazza Castello, commonly
PiazzaSempione(ph.DarioGarofalo)
known as torta degli sposi (wedding cake) because of its round shape and atracting plays of water, the Piazza affords a breathtaking view of the Castle’s façade. Today the building houses museums and art collections of inestimable value.
It leads directly to Parco Sempione, the city’s green lungs, ideal for a relaxing walk along tree-lined paths, litle bridges and picturesque views. The end of Parco Sempione gives direct access to Piazza Sempione, with its imposing Arch of Peace, one of the city’s most symbolic monuments. Built in the 19th century to celebrate Napoleon’s victo-
ries and later on dedicated to peace between European countries, the Arch dominates the Piazza with its neo-classical elegance. All around, elegant buildings and trendy spots create a lively atmosphere, making this square a gathering place for locals and tourists alike, in particular, on spring and summer nights. We move onto the heart of the Porta Nuova neighborhood, to Piazza Gae Aulenti, the symbol of contemporary Milan, a masterwork of design and technology which embodies the city’s transformation into a world-leading metropolis. Surrounded by iconic skyscrapers, such as the Uni-
credit Tower, Italy’s tallest building, the Piazza features a round raised platform, spectacular plays of water and a beautiful LED lighting system. A must-see for anyone seeking to explore Milano’s most modern side. Before ending our tour, we go to Piazza Quadrilatero, in the famous Fashion District, the symbol of the city’s elegance and prestige, where the elegant Portrait Hotel is located. And from there we head to Piazza San Babila, dominated by the Basilica of San Babila, a combination of ancient charm and modern dynamism, the last stop of our journey through Milano’s architectural wonders.

SHAPES AND VISIONS
Salone del Mobile 2025: art, light and contemporary vision
TEXT Teresa Favi
This April, as every year, Milan once again becomes the beating heart of international design, with Salone del Mobile 2025 at the Fiera di Rho and Fuorisalone turning the city streets into a theatre of experimentation, where aesthetics, innovation and technology combine in an immersive experience. The positive energy that permeates Milan radiates from the Salone: a sensory journey among visionary forms, unusual materials and perception-challenging installations. An unmissable event for anyone who sees design as cultural expression and a statement of style.
THE KEY EVENTS
The programme for this edition is a mosaic of encounters with architecture, design and art. On 6 April, Robert Wilson opens proceedings with
Mother, a site-specific installation at Museo Pietà Rondanini in Castello Sforzesco.
In a dialogue between eras, the renowned US artist comes face to face with Michelangelo’s last unfinished work, accompanied by a haunting soundtrack courtesy of Arvo Pärt. Organised in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan’s Culture department, the exhibition is open until 18 May. Pavilions 13-15 of the fair present Villa Héritage, a spatial narrative curated by Pierre-Yves Rochon, maestro of interior design and the creator of some of the world’s most iconic hotels, such as the Waldorf Astoria in New York.
Among the most eagerly-anticipated installations is La dolce atesa by the Oscar-winning filmmaker Paolo Sorrentino, in Pavilions 22-24.
This immersive work promises an emotional journey: a timeless space and an invisible bridge between present in future, in which desire is intertwined with the fear of meeting destiny. A void to be filled or an opportunity to seize. Because, in Sorrentino’s words, “Waiting is agony. Sweet anticipation is a journey; stunning and mesmerising”. A middle ground where everything is still possible, where everything can – or could – be sweeter.
For the third consecutive year, the Formafantasma Arena hosts Drafing Futures. Conversations about Next Perspectives in Pavilion 14, a series of talks curated by Annalisa Rosso. Prominent speakers include Lesley Lokko, founder of the African Futures Institute and curator of the Venice Biennale of Architecture, and Valeria Sego-

Light as experience, technology and innovation is the focus of Euroluce 2025. The brand-new Euroluce International Lighting Forum (10-11 April, Pavilion 2) explores the role of lighting from a multidisciplinary perspective. Under the title Light for Life, Light for Spaces, more than 20 experts – lighting designers, architects, artists, scientists and psychologists – share their visions of the future of light. The event takes place in the Forest of Space Arena, conceived by Japanese architect Sou Fujimoto, creator of the famous cloud-like metal Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London. Scheduled speakers include Stefano Mancuso, a pioneer in plant neurobiology, solar design expert Marjan van Aubel, and Japanese lighting

Casa BFF is the headquarters of BFF Bank transformed into a museum of modern and contemporary art. It is a new icon of Milan inaugurated last March and hosts, like a sophisticated gallery, some important works by artists who have made the art history. A project to promote art and culture in a large space that the whole world knows because for decades it was the territory where the Milano Fiera Campionaria was located and where even today you can feel the presence of millions of people who have come to this area from all over the world to see, experience and discover the novelties of the moment. The collection also includes masterpieces by Valerio Adami, Franco Angeli, Alberto Burri, Lucio del Pezzo, Gianfranco Pardi, Arnaldo Pomodoro, Lucio Fontana, Mario

The event on this occasion is dedicated to Enrico Baj, with a series of forty etchings made in 1987 and inspired by a J. Milton’s poem that concerns reflections on the human condition. The de-
sire to share an artistic heritage of notable cultural value now made available to the community is clear. The stimulus for innovation and change can be perceived from the group’s philosophy and from the impact that the technologically advanced building of great architectural value has. Urban regeneration concerns people and the museum was therefore designed to be transparent, useful and accessible. Visible from the outside, while protecting the works inside, the contents of the BFF Gallery structure are partially underground and allow the works to be preserved from light and offer large outdoor spaces to socialize; as stated by M. Belingheri, CEO of BBF Banking Group, aware that art is a tool for dialogue and a stimulus to creativity and growth for both companies and society as Italian culture promotion.
BEYOND LIVING
Welcome to Palazzo Molteni – a space suspended between art and design, in the heart of Milan
TEXT Sabrina Bozzoni
Three thousand square metres spread across seven floors: these are the impressive proportions of the historic Milanese building that is now home to Molteni&C. Located at number 9 Via Manzoni – just steps from Piazza della Scala – in a wonderful historic palace, the newly inaugurated Palazzo Molteni blends the elegance of Liberty style with neoclassical refinement.
Created in partnership with Arc74, a renowned name on both the Italian and international design scenes, the space embodies the very soul of Molteni&C: its unmistakable style, its collections, and its heritage. But this is more than a flagship store. It is a versatile, open space that redefines the concept itself – a multifaceted venue where art and design converge,
with a forward-looking spirit. Like the grand home of an art collector, it showcases paintings, sculptures, installations, and furniture, almost as if it were Milan’s newest museum. A hybrid space with generous yet intimate rooms, it exists somewhere between a showroom and a boutique: a microcosm where design and art enhance one another, forming a vibrant window into the Italian lifestyle.
Overlooking one of the city’s most prestigious streets, Palazzo Molteni has become an essential destination for design lovers. At the helm is the brand’s creative director, Vincent Van Duysen, who has reimagined this 19th-century building – renovated in 1922 by Giuseppe Mentasti and Stefano Lissoni – as a kind of “urban pavilion” with a distinctly domestic
soul. A sanctuary for lovers of art and design, it features marble, wood panelling, and striking graphic compositions flowing from room to room. Stepping inside feels like entering the enlightened home of a collector – where every object tells a story, stirs an emotion, evokes a life. It is a space where bold experimentation dialogues with history. It’s not just a showroom. It’s not just a shop. It is a living, breathing space – vibrant and dynamic. An open, flexible ecosystem where design creates an immersive, enveloping atmosphere. A new home that marks the culmination of a milestone year for Molteni&C, as the brand celebrates its 90th anniversary. A must-visit for Milanese locals and curious travellers alike, eager to discover a world where beauty is meant to be lived.
