Secrets and fun facts about the city’s metro stations
TEXT Ugo Rossi
Have you ever travelled on Milan’s metro system? And if so, have you ever wondered how some of the stations got their names? Let’s find out together. We’ll start with Line 3the yellow line - and Porto di Mare. It was 1907 when the Public Works Department of Milan presented a project that would make the river port at Rogoredo, to the south of Porta Romana, the point of convergence for water flowing out of the city. The plan was for a large basin with no fewer than five mooring piers, lying to the east of the Idroscalo artificial lake and connected by the Rogoredo and Porta Romana railway lines. However, two world wars and changing lifestyles in the city meant the project was abandoned. The metro station and the
UgoRossi HEAD CONCIERGE HOTEL GALLIA PALACE PUNTA ALA AND EDITOR-INCHIEF OF MILAN CONCIERGE
entire Porto di Mare neighbourhood are a homage to a project that never happened. Continuing our journey, we come to Lodi TIBB. To understand the station’s name, we need to go back in time to the early 20th century in the area between Viale Umbria and Piazzale Lodi. The area was home to a now-defunct company that designed and built trains,
trams, rolling stock and signalling and safety systems. Its name was Tecnomasio Italiano Brown Boveri, and it was located here because this was a strategic junction with the goods line to Porta Romana, which would have been the natural choice for a name in 1991, when the station opened. Nevertheless, to avoid confusion with an existing railway station of the same name, the acronym Lodi TIBB was created. Now we’ll change to number 1, the red line, and Gambara, which in station announcements is pronounced Gàmbara, while local inhabitants insist the correct pronunciation is Gambàra. But it seems ATM, the Milan public transport company, is right: the station is named afer the nearby square commemorating the 16th-century poet Veronica Gàmbara.

The route where you can discover the most beautiful house museums in Milan is a special secret journey to explore stately homes which still preserve the traces of those who inhabited them and elegantly disclose their secrets.
MUSEO BAGATTI
VALSECCHI
The Museo Bagati Valsecchi is a house museum whose origin is an extraordinary event dating back to the late 19th century, related to the collection world. The protagonists of this story are two brothers: the barons Fausto and Giuseppe Bagati Valsecchi.
Starting from the 1880s, the two of them renovated their family home in the heart of Milan between Via Gesù and Via Santo. Afer Fausto and Giuseppe died, the house of Bagati Valsecchi continued to be inhabited by their heirs
until 1974. That year, one of Giuseppe’s sons, Pasino, who in his seventies decided to establish the Bagati Valsecchi Foundation, donating the whole collection of works of art collected by his ancestors. The Museo Bagati Valsecchi opened to the public in 1994, twenty years afer the descendants of Fausto and Giuseppe lived in the building, today located in the heart of the fashion district.
When visiting it, the first impression you get is that you are entering a typical 16th-century Lombard house filled with Renaissance furniture, paintings and statues, but when you really look around, one realises the amazing feeling of modernity hiding behind its old-fashioned style: the idea of the barons was also to add to the house all the most futuristic comforts of the time such as heating, fresh water and
electricity. The most peculiar aspect of this house, however, is perhaps the spirit which was behind the idea of Fausto and Giuseppe to collect ancient and precious pieces: not with the sole purpose of admiring them, but to live with them and use them in their everyday life.
Via Gesù, 5. Open Tuesday to Sunday (1pm-5.45pm). Admission: full price €10 – reduced € 7

THE ROUTE WHERE YOU CAN DISCOVER
THE MOST BEAUTIFUL HOUSE MUSEUMS
IN MILAN IS A SPECIAL SECRET JOURNEY
Open since 2003, the couple’s former home takes you on a journey through 20th-century Italian art with a selection of about three hundred works of art belonging to the Boschi Di Stefano collection. The house was donated along with the works to the Municipality of Milan in 1973. The house is divided into 11 exhibition rooms laid out in a chronological and stylistic order which also matches the choice of the furnishings. It is a very rich collection which includes artworks from the first decade of the 20th century to the end of the 1960s. Boccioni, Carrà, Sironi, Morandi, De Pisis, de Chirico, Fontana, and Manzoni are just
a few of the important artists the couple chose to invest in. Antonio and Marieda lived their passion for collecting as a sort of joint endeavour with a moral purpose, afflicted by sacrifices and hardship along with a patronising spirit. They did not just buy works and display them for pure aesthetic reasons: they both believed that the artist was a special person capable of understanding and representing the ethical values and spirit of their time, transforming them into a work of art. For this reason, the apartment in Via Jan 15 was not only the repository of a rich collection but a meeting place for artists and personalities who had a key role in the

MUSEO POLDI PEZZOLI
Open to the public since 1881, the Museo Poldi Pezzoli is an enchanting museum not only for the collections it houses but also for the style of its rooms. The house belonged to Gian Giacomo Poldi Pezzoli, a collector and art lover with innovative ideas. Afer his unexpected death at the age of 57, the museum was open to visitors – as per his wish –three years later in 1881 with the help of the Foundation established and managed by his dear friend Giuseppe Bertini. The house museum was set up by Gian Giacomo in 1849 when he returned to Milan afer being forced into exile by fear of repercussions from the Austrians for his support to the revolution. The young heir developed an interest in art and visited France and England where he came into contact
with the world of international collecting. Gian Giacomo was the son of Giuseppe Poldi Pezzoli, an affluent man, and grandson on his mother’s side of a man of great culture, as well as a collector of rarities, precious objects and ancient volumes. He began his own personal collecting activity starting with ancient weapons and eventually with paintings of the Lombard, Venetian and Tuscan Renaissance (including precious paintings by Pollaiolo, Boticelli, Mantegna, Hayez and many others). For the furnishing of the house, instead, he commissioned the most sought-afer artists-decorators of the time: Giovanni Bertini and Luigi Scrosati, who designed a series of rooms inspired by different styles of the past: the large staircase and the bedroom in Baroque style, the antechamber in French Rocaille style, and the Black Room in Renaissance style.

VILLA NECCHI CAMPIGLIO
Located in the heart of a tranquil and elegant district in the centre of Milan, Villa Necchi Campiglio was designed in the early 1930s by architect Piero Portaluppi on behalf of sisters Nedda and Gigina Necchi and Angelo Campiglio, Gigina’s husband, members of a cultured and avant-garde industrial bourgeoisie. The building is surrounded by a beautiful garden equipped with a tennis court and a swimming pool. Keywords: innovation and elegance. The building is marked by expansive linear architecture and is divided into two floors. The ground floor overlooks the greenery, and was used for social events and designed to spend time with the guests; the upper floor is occupied by the sleeping quarters. All the rooms were designed to be efficient and comfortable, equipped with the latest systems such as lifs, food lifs, intercoms, walled vaults and sliding armoured
doors. In addition, it was embellished with art deco furnishings and works of art. Today, the villa is open to the public, honouring the wish of the Necchi sisters who entrusted the house to FAI in 2001.
Via Mozart, 14. Open Wednesdays to Sundays (10am-6pm).
Admission: full price €12, reduced €4-7, free admission for FAI members.
CASA MANZONI
Alessandro Manzoni lived in many houses, but the only one that can really be regarded as such is the house in Via Morone 1 in Milan: a three-storey building purchased afer the birth of his first two children, consisting of many rooms. Manzoni had his own private room overlooking the garden, which can still be visited today, where he spent time alone to read, meditate, and write. It is here that he developed his ideas for the characters of The Betrothed. Afer the writer’s death and numerous vicissitudes, it was opened to the public by the Municipality of

From 1962 to 2002 Achille Cas-
tiglioni worked in the studio in Piazza Castello 27. In 2006, this place was turned into a museum without losing its essence and nature; a space which was a source of ideas and creativity. Here everything – or almost everything – can be touched and observed up close: there are no display cases. You can sit on the same chairs where Castiglioni, Giò Ponti, or Zanuso sat during their meetings and let your gaze wander over the famous anonymous objects collected by Achille during his life which were his inspiration. In 2011, the Achille Castiglioni Foundation was officially established with the aim of preserving his work through the complete cataloguing and digitisation of everything relating to Achille’s 60 years of activity.

Ode to Transience it is not a simple exibition of art works by a Chinese artist coming from the Royal College of Art in London but a strong expression of cultural roots and sense of impermanence connected to a deep and sensitive Tibetan culture. A beautifull collection of several oil on caneva paintings, have been presented at Tempesta Gallery; in view untill March 21th and they are worth a visit. Human condition with a fluide and very changing existence is the message with painterly gesture of color gradations that spread dreamlike and volatile dimentions, stimulating spiritual character. They are a poignant series of artworks focus of profound emotion moments inspired by Tibet ‘s tradition also between hope, solitude and the love for one’s family. This is the first solo exhibition in Italy by Zhang (1998) that brings already universal themes of the meaning
of life memory, without losing the material sense of real physical life that gives us things, memories but also the joy of living and to stay together. As Zhenlin Zhang says: “The coldest places in the world are not glaciers but the predestined chill of human skin. Farewells are not merely separations: they are encounters with the profound essence of life, an opportunity to reflect on the fleeting beauty of the most meaningful moments of our existence. My work seeks to honor these transitions, merging hope and solitude”. Tempesta Gallery was Founded in Milan in 2020 by Elisa Bonzano and Enrico Angelino to promote contemporary art addressing socially and environmentally relevant themes connecting artists from Italy to abroad.

OLD MILAN BACK IN ACTION
Everyone is crazy for Risoto Milanese. A list of the best hotel restaurants where you can try this dish
TEXT Teresa Favi
Risoto alla Milanese is one of the most famous Italian dishes, a symbol of Milanese cuisine. Its origin dates back to the 16th century. At that time, Lombardy was under Spanish rule and Milan was no longer the largest producer of textile and weapons. Legend has it that the recipe for this risoto was invented during the construction of Milan Cathedral: some strands of saffron that a Flemish crafsman used to colour the windows ended up in the rice served at his daughter’s wedding. From that day, the dish gained its golden colour and be-
came one of the most recognisable symbols of Milanese cuisine.
The recipe has evolved over the centuries and to-

day, this dish is included in the menus of the most prestigious restaurants and served during the
most important occasions such as premiere nights at the Scala, where Risotto alla Milanese was considered a sign of success.
The recipe has been enriched with various ingredients, but the protagonist has always remained saffron, responsible for the characteristic golden colour of the risoto.
The first versions included marrow and ‘cervellata’ (spiced pork sausage flavoured with saffron) until 1981 when Gualtiero Marchesi revolutionised the dish by replacing the marrow with gold leaf, thus introducing a more refined and lighter version.
Despite its many transformations, Risoto alla Milanese is still true to its essence and a symbol of Milan’s food tradition. The main ingredients are rice, broth, buter, marrow (optional), Grana Padano or Parmigiano Reggiano, and of course saffron.
The dish is a staple of restaurants and special occasions, and continues to represent the history of a city which has made cuisine an art, and today, it is one of the most important dishes of the best hotel restaurants of Milan. Let us discover them.

TAKE CARE NOT TO OVERSTIR OR OVERCOOK; THE RICE SHOULDN’T TAKE MORE THAN 20 MINUTES ON THE STOVE
ACANTO
This version stands out for its elegant presentation with a marrow croquete flavoured with Maldon salt and pink pepper. A modern dish but with the taste of tradition. Sof sauce, Carnaroli rice cooked al dente for no more than 14 minutes,
plenty of grated 24-month Parmigiano Reggiano, and saffron pistils.
A refined risoto which suits the style of this luxurious restaurant with its marbles and Murano glass, the purple colour and the small orchids.
(Principe di Savoia, Piazza della Repubblica, 17)
ARMANI/RISTORANTE
The beauty of the location, the refined hospitality, and the charm of the roofop terrace accessible by a private lif makes this place unique. Here Risotto alla Milanese does not renounce its traditional ingredients.
Yet, the marrow is turned into a smoked mousse served as a side dish, a mignonete sauce with rosemary oil and Sarawak pepper. A masterpiece of elegance enriched in the end with a fresh touch of sour flavours such as lemon peel and a teaspoon of wine vinegar.

ON TRADITIONAL MENUS,
YOU’LL OFTEN FIND THE RICE TOPPED WITH OSSOBUCO
LA CUPOLA
Saffron risoto with bone marrow, ossobuco jus, and gremolata. Made with Riso Riserva San Massimo, cooked in chicken broth and creamed with 24-month-aged Parmigiano, buter, and a reduction of vinegar, wine, and onions.
The bone marrow, oven-baked until creamy, is served at the center. Ossobuco jus is added along with part of the original vegetable soffrito. The dish is finished with gremolata, made of parsley, fresh lemon zest, and garlic, for an aromatic touch.

LA VERANDA
Fabrizio Borraccino is a chef from Abruzzo, the region where the best saffron pistils grow in the Navelli plateau. His cuisine is flavourful and refined. To enrich his golden risotto, he adds sweetbreads braised in their own juice – a homage to the cervel-
lata dish that used to be prepared with offal, that traditional idea of a rich but also poor dish inspired by French cuisine, but cooked with the flavours and the amazing ingredients produced in the Italian Peninsula.
(Four Seasons Hotel, Milano Via Gesù, 6-8)
IL RISTORANTE
NIKO ROMITO
One of the best risotos. Perhaps, it is the tension of preparing a dish which belongs to the culinary tradition of another region. Perhaps, the fact that Romito is one of the main exponents of the new Italian cuisine. Perhaps, the proximity to Navelli and its excellent saffron. Whatever the reason behind Romito’s excellent and minimalist golden risoto – more difficult than it looks – one cannot stop eating it and when it is finished, you would always want more.
(Bulgari Hotel Milano, via Privata Fratelli Gabba, 7b)
SETA
In this tasteful and refined restaurant, chef Antonio Guida prepares a traditional, golden Risoto allaMilanese served at the bisalla tro, with saffron pistils and a flavourful sauce that is noticeable by those ripples formed when you dip the fork in. But there is another version, also golden with beef tartare spread on top of the risoto for a more creative recipe. The chef’s touch.
(Mandarin Oriental Via Andegari, 9)
TERRAZZA GALLIA
Can a golden risoto with fish still be called “Risotto alla Milanese”? Yes, if it is a golden risoto with purple shrimp from Santa Margherita (fried heads, drops of shrimp coral and burnt lemon powder).
Lightness and elegance in the cuisine of the Terrazza di Vitorio in Milan have no equal.

Opened to the public in 1881, the Poldi Pezzoli Museum is a must-see for the beauty of its rooms, evocative of the past, from the Middle Ages to the 1700s and the Armory reinterpreted by contemporary artist Arnaldo Pomodoro, but also because of the variety and richness of its collections. Masterworks of painting and sculpture, carpets, laces and embroideries, arms and armors, jewelry, chinaware, glassware, furniture, sundials and mechanical clocks: over 5,000 ex-

PALAZZO INA
There are many entrances with a recognisable appearance scattered throughout Milan, all designed by some of the most famous architects of the 20th century. But the most instagrammed? The entrance hall of Palazzo Ina by modernist architect Piero Bottoni, who also designed Monte Stella and Qt8. An atrium with Palladian Carrara marble flooring, while the walls are covered with powder pink and cobalt blue tiles: a perfect mix for Instagram. Corso Sempione, 33
VIA LINCOLN
Low-rise houses, pastel shades, small balconies and flower gardens. The houses in Via Lincoln, a former working-class district now known as the Rainbow district are all painted in different colours. Some even gave it the nickname of Milanese Burano, and it is a sought-after place by those who, in addition to the monuments, want to discover the city’s secret and unusual places.
FONDAZIONE PRADA
The architecture of the museum offers a varied choice of views and panoramas to take a good photo. For example, the Upside Down Mushroom Room: a dreamlike installation by Carsten Höller that enriches the Atlas, the permanent collection of the Fondazione Prada, and attracts the curiosity of many visitors. But also the Bar Luce, designed by film director Wes Anderson: pastel tones, jukebox, pinball machines and a refined vintage atmosphere to feel like being in a film while sipping a cup of coffee. This building is a great example of eclectic architecture. It was built by Giuseppe Pestagalli in the 1860s and features a Neo-Renaissance façade on the outside. If you stand in the middle of the courtyard open to the public and you look up, you will see how its structure frames a portion of the blue sky in a perfect octagon.

ARTLINE
Eggs that stretch out towards the sky, a gigantic hand, and stars on the square floor. These are just three of the art installations found at Artline, the park in the shadow of the skyscrapers of the City Life district, that is enriched every year with new installations. A new life for the old headquarters of the army in Piazza delle Armi, that was used for military exercises until 1923.
Piazza Elsa Morante
VICOLO DEI LAVANDAI
Located along the Navigli, Vicolo dei Lavandai offers a picturesque view of the old Milan. You can see the stream, the canopy still supported by small wooden beams and the old lavoir. The people who came here in the past to wash their clothes were not women, but men, members of a trade association active in Milan since the 18th century.
