Chef dell’anno e vincitore dell’Award of Culinary Excellence Marriott Europe nel 2016, per Maurizio Locatelli la cucina è la sua vita. Anche se le sue origini sono profondamente radicate nel Nord Italia (essendo nato a Brescia, vicino al Lago di Garda) è in Costa Smeralda che Locatelli, da oltre 30 anni, delizia i palati degli ospiti più esigenti. La sua filosofia, saldamente radicata nella tradizione, combinata a ingredienti creativi, internazionali e personali, gli ha permesso di diventare uno dei protagonisti di ‘Taste of Sardinia by Cala di Volpe’, un progetto che porta in giro per il mondo il know-how del Cala di Volpe in termini di servizio ed esperienza culinaria. Although his origins are deeply rooted in Northern Italy (he was born near Lake Garda in Brescia) it is on the Costa Smeralda that Locatelli has been delighting the palates of discerning guests for more than 30 years.

His philosophy, firmly rooted in tradition yet infused with creative, international, and personal ingredients, has established him as a key figure in ‘Taste of Sardinia by Cala di Volpe’, a project that spreads Cala di Volpe’s expertise in service and culinary experience worldwide. His career began in Sardinia, his homeland, inspired by his father who taught him the basics of Mediterranean cuisine. MARCO URRU

C H E F AT T H E B E E F B A R C A L A D I V O L P E Nato nel cuore della Sardegna, Marco Urru inizia a viaggiare presto per inseguire la grande passione per la cucina. Tutto inizia a Camogli, in Liguria, dove frequenta la scuola alberghiera Marco Polo. Fa ritorno in Sardegna, ma successivamente si sposta a Malta, per poi dividersi tra esperienze al Pitrizza e al Cala di Volpe e alle pendici del Cervino in Val D’Aosta d’inverno. Dopo anni di crescita professionale, viene nominato chef al ristorante il Pomodoro a pochi passi dalla piazzetta storica di Porto Cervo. In seguito, si apre un’altra parentesi nella sua vita professionale, che lo vede a capo del progetto Beefbar all’interno del Cala di Volpe. La cucina di Urru è caratterizzata da un felice connubio fra la tradizione gastronomica della sua terra e suggestioni più moderne, ottenuto grazie a un sopraffino lavoro di contaminazione e pianificazione creativa. Per capirlo, basta provare lo straordinario Filetto al pepe, una piatto che deve il suo incanto alla qualità assoluta della materia prima, la carne, combinata con una magistrale esecuzione.

Born in the heart of Sardinia, Marco Urru started travelling early to pursue his great passion for cooking. It all started in Camogli, Liguria, where he attended the Marco Polo hotel management school.

He returned to Sardinia, but later ventured to Malta and then divided his time between experiences at Pitrizza and Cala di Volpe, as well as on the slopes of Cervinia in Val D’Aosta during the winter. After years of professional growth, he became head chef at the Pomodoro restaurant, just a stone’s throw from Porto Cervo’s historic square. Subsequently, another chapter opened in his career when he took the helm of the Beefbar project at the Cala di Volpe. Urru’s cuisine blends the gastronomic traditions of his homeland with modern influences, achieved through meticulous work based on creative contamination and planning.

Parliamo della Pastry Chef Laura Prinzis che in soli quattro anni si è guadagnata il titolo di Chef de Partie in pasticceria al Cala di Volpe. Il suo stile di vita e di lavoro, è un’ode all’apertura mentale, mentre l’obiettivo privilegiato della sua carriera è il tentativo di fondere nel modo più armonico e suggestivo la pasticceria moderna alla grande tradizione sarda, che resta il suo punto di riferimento e la sua più grande passione.

Lei si racconta al meglio con la sua Delizia Sarda, un dessert ispirato ai profumi della Sardegna: crumble di amaretti racchiuso in una spugna al cacao, gel di pesca bianca, germogli di finocchietto, Cagnulari. Il tocco finale: origliette e coricheddos (dolcetti tipici sardi) posti in cima con eleganza.

The event was dedicated to the world of wine and food and was organised by Marriott International on behalf of Smeralda Holding, which manages the Hotel Cala di Volpe, the Cervo Hotel, the Pevero Golf Club and a rich collection of bars and restaurants on the Costa Smeralda.

The Porto Cervo Wine & Food Festival is designed to bring together major and emerging names from the local and national wine and food scene to present their products to industry professionals and enthusiasts.

This year, the long weekend of Wine & Food tastings at the Cervo Conference Centre was enriched by an intense programme of masterclasses, cocktail shows and evening events, according to a concept of widespread event that involved the whole area.

Lo chef Michele Bacciu, nato e cresciuto in Gallura, quel territorio che ospita la Costa Smeralda, è stato ispirato da suo padre, che gli ha insegnato le basi della cucina mediterranea. Ma la sua cucina è una rielaborazione in chiave contemporanea delle varianti etniche, unite alle materie prime e alle più arcaiche tradizioni locali. Bacciu ha frequentato l’istituto alberghiero IPSAR di Arzachena, per poi iniziare a lavorare nella brigata di cucina del Cervo Hotel a Porto Cervo. Dopo aver collezionato numerose esperienze tra i migliori ristoranti della Costa Smeralda e della Svizzera, è approdato all’Hotel Cala di Volpe. Qui sotto la guida di Maurizio Locatelli ha potuto valorizzare la sua creatività e le sue origini sarde. Nel private member club Harry’s Bar nel cuore di Mayfair, uno dei quartieri più eleganti di Londra, lo scorso marzo sono andate in scena due serate all’insegna dell’esclusività: due esperienze culinarie create ad hoc per gli ospiti dell’Hotel Cala di Volpe e del Cervo Hotel, i due hotel gestiti da Marriott International, per conto di Qatar Holding. Nel menù solo il meglio della produzione enogastronomica dell’isola, i cui sapori e profumi hanno subito evocato tutta la suggestione e bellezza della terra sarda. Sono i culurgiones, tipici ravioli sardi con un ripieno fatto di patate, formaggio pecorino e foglie di menta fresca, insieme con le mitiche seadas, il dolce sardo per eccellenza e quello più conosciuto ed apprezzato, il punto forte del menù di Taste of Sardinia.

Piatti in cui emerge chiaro il legame tra la cucina locale e la tradizione agropastorale dell’isola, in cui ogni pietanza racchiude anche un significato più profondo, non solo legato al cibo. I “culurgiones” infatti, ricetta tipica ogliastrina, vengono considerati come un dono prezioso, un segno di stima, rispetto ed amicizia. Mentre le “seadas”, farcite con un interno di formaggio a pasta molle, fritte e ricoperte di una colata di miele caldo, venivano preparate dalle donne sarde per festeggiare gli avvenimenti importanti. Poi non può mancare uno dei piatti più rappresentativi del ristorante dell’Hotel Cala di Volpe: il lombo d’agnello in crosta di erbe, rivisitato utilizzando prodotti ed erbe spontanee del territorio, accompagnato da una salsa al cannonau e menta.

Chef Michele Bacciu, born and raised in Gallura, the region where the Costa Smeralda is located, was inspired by his father, who taught him the basics of Mediterranean cuisine. But his cuisine is a contemporary reinterpretation of ethnic variations, combined with the most ancient local traditions and ingredients. Bacciu attended the IPSAR hotel management school in Arzachena before joining the kitchen brigade at the Cervo Hotel in Porto Cervo. After gaining experience in the best restaurants on the Costa Smeralda and in Switzerland, he arrived at the Hotel Cala di Volpe. Here, under the guidance of Maurizio Locatelli, he was able to develop his creativity and his Sardinian origins. Last March, Harry’s Bar, a private members’ club in the heart of Mayfair, one of London’s most elegant districts, hosted two exclusive evenings: two culinary experiences created ad hoc for the guests of the Cala di Volpe and Cervo Hotels, the two hotels managed by Marriott International on behalf of Qatar Holding. The menu featured only the best of Sardinian food and wine, whose flavours and aromas immediately evoked all the charm and beauty of Sardinia. The ‘culurgiones’, typical Sardinian ravioli with a filling of potatoes, pecorino cheese and fresh mint leaves, together with the legendary ‘seadas’, the Sardinian dessert par excellence and the best known and most popular, were the highlights of the Taste of Sardinia menu. These are dishes in which the clear link between the local cuisine and the island’s agro-pastoral tradition is evident, with each dish also having a deeper meaning, not only related to food.

The ‘culurgiones’, a typical recipe from Ogliastra, are considered a precious gift, a sign of esteem, respect and friendship. The ‘seadas’, stuffed with soft cheese, fried and covered with warm honey, were prepared

by Sardinian women to celebrate important events.

There was also one of the most representative dishes of the restaurant of the Hotel Cala di Volpe: herb-crusted lamb loin, reinterpreted with local products and wild herbs, accompanied by a cannonau wine and mint sauce.

Una responsabilità affrontata più in vigna o in cantina?

Marco Lostia. Sicuramente i nostri vini nascono in vigna. In cantina non facciamo altro che adottare una enologia poco invasiva e che possa rispettare e esaltare queste differenze.

Qual è la strategia per esaltare l’identità del terroir?

Salvatore Giacoppo. Il segreto è essere poco invasivi, limitando le forzature. Gli interventi chimici sono riservati solo alla difesa dai patogeni, salvaguardiamo il terreno e la sua vitalità, è ciò che rende speciali i vini Capichera.

Come state affrontando il climate change?

Salvatore Giacoppo. Ci concentriamo sul terreno, cercando di difenderlo dal caldo e dalla siccità, favoriamo lo sviluppo delle erbe spontanee tra i filari per mantenere la copertura vegetale. Lavoriamo anche sulla chioma delle viti per ombreggiarle. Ma oltre alle buone idee bisogna avere personale di campagna capace e motivato, e Capichera ne è ben dotata.

L’innovazione e la tradizione in due prodotti?

Marco Lostia. Se parliamo di tradizione il nostro ‘Capichera’ che nasce nella tenuta storica e da più di 40 anni incarna la filosofia dell’azienda. Un vino complesso con un buon corpo e con una spiccata mineralità, una grande longevità che racconta l’annata di produzione.

L’innovazione è il nostro rosato ‘Tambè’, moderno, carattere spiccato, ottima bevibilità.

Which is greater, vineyard management or winemaking?

Marco Lostia. There is no doubt that our wines are born in the vineyards. At the winery we have chosen to adopt non-invasive winemaking practices which respect above-mentioned differences.

What strategy to enhance the terroir’s identity?

Salvatore Giacoppo. The secret is to be as little invasive as possible. Chemical treatments are limited to protecting the grapes from pathogens, we safeguard the soil and its productivity, which is what makes Capichera wines so special.

How are you facing climate change?

Salvatore Giacoppo. In our vineyards, we are focusing on the soil, we are encouraging the growth of wild herbs in the vineyards to maintain spontaneous covering of the soil and, if necessary, we sow herbs to cover the soil. We also work on the vines’ foliage to provide dense shade.

But, in addition to good ideas, you need a skilful and motivated staff, and Capichera has it.

Innovation and tradition in two products?

Marco Lostia. When it comes to tradition, our ‘Capichera‘ wine, which is produced at our historic winery, has embodied the winery’s philosophy for over 40 years. A complex, full-bodied wine with remarkable minerality. Innovation is represented by our rosé ‘Tambè’ wine, which is modern, with character and very easy to drink.

Da un territorio unico come la Gallura non poteva che nascere un’acqua altrettanto unica, ben due volte vincitrice al Berkeley Springs Water Tasting (nel 2019 e nel 2023). A raccontaci di più è Mauro Solinas, presidente e direttore generale dell’Acqua Smeraldina.

Perché un’acqua minerale come Smeraldina non potrebbe nascere altrove?

Perché è un dono della natura che nasce nelle profondità del Monte di Deu, dove gli antichissimi graniti, datati ben trecento milioni di anni, le conferiscono una bontà e una purezza eccezionali.

Che ruolo ha la sostenibilità nella vostra produzione?

Per noi il rispetto della natura è tutto. Il nostro lavoro consiste proprio nell’estrarre un bene prezioso da un terreno incontaminato, che da sempre ci impegniamo a mantenere tale. Ecco perché la prima confezione Smeraldina, nel 1985, fu il Tetrapak, tutt’ora impiegato per la Smeraldina Box (più del 75% di materiale rinnovabile e tappo di plastica ‘estratta’ dalla canna da zucchero). Inoltre, operiamo in tutto il territorio sardo con il vetro a rendere, introdotto nel 1987.

Come nasce l’impegno a sostegno dello sport?

Mio padre, il fondatore, ha fatto del benessere olistico la propria filosofia di vita. Da qui nasce il nostro claim: “Pura gioia di vivere”. E lo sport racchiude al meglio questo concetto. Soprattutto quando sono i giovani a praticarlo, come nel progetto della scuola di golf per gli under 18 che sosteniamo insieme all’Hotel Cala di Volpe. Come azienda, sosteniamo inoltre la Lega Basket, la Dinamo Basket e i Sardegna Open del 2023-2024.

Why couldn’t a mineral water like Smeraldina have come from somewhere else?

Because it is a gift of nature born in the depths of Mount Deu, where the ancient granite rocks, dating back three hundred million years, give it an exceptionally good flavour and purity.

What role does sustainability play in your production?

For us, respect for nature is everything. Our job is to extract a precious commodity from uncontaminated soil, which we have always strived to keep as such.

That is why the first Smeraldina packaging, in 1985, was Tetrapak, which is still used for the Smeraldina Box (more than 75% is made from renewable material and the plastic for the cap is made from sugar cane).

And since 1987 we’ve been using reusable glass bottles all over Sardinia.

How does the commitment to support sport come about?

My father, the founder, made holistic wellness his philosophy of life. This led to our claim: “Pure joy of life”. Sport epitomises this concept, especially when it is practised by young people, as exemplified by our support for the under-18 golf school project with the Cala di Volpe Hotel. As a company, we also support the Basketball League, Dinamo Basket and the Sardegna Open 2023-2024.

The work by Studio Dordoni Architetti, who, along with the Moinard-Bétaille duo from the 4BI & Associés architecture studio, was also responsible for the restyling of Hotel Cala di Volpe, has transformed the heart of the club, the members’ and awards room: this has been revisited with respect for the valuable pre-existing elements, with the aim of creating a new setting where members and friends can gather and share their passion for golf. “The initial idea was to emphasise space, which was strongly characterised by the ‘ship’s keel’ ceiling structure, through lighting design to accentuate its beauty and at the same time create a soft and relaxing atmosphere, which typically characterises convivial spaces”, architect Luca Zaniboni, president of Studio Dordoni Architetti explains. Consequently, we renewed the furnishings by selecting various collections of Italian-made furniture, aiming for a contemporary design with balanced volumes and light lines capable of recreating the original atmosphere of the golden years of the Costa Smeralda. Wooden armchairs, fabrics in natural and delicate colours, hand-woven jute and wool rugs create a warm and sophisticated setting, accentuated by the addition of solid walnut tables designed specifically for

Dopo che il 2023 si è concluso come un anno record, anche il 2024 si prospetta essere un altro anno straordinario e ancora più spettacolare per la Costa Smeralda, con previsioni che superano quello precedente. È iniziata una nuova stagione superlativa che vede la Costa Smeralda sempre più leader tra le destinazioni turistiche di lusso nel mondo.

Lo scorso anno, in occasione dei festeggiamenti dei 60 anni, si sono conclusi i grandi lavori di restyling del Cala di Volpe, iniziati nel 2018, che hanno portato a una evoluzione dell’Hotel trasformandolo in una vera e propria destinazione con una serie di innovazioni, una ricca offerta nella ristorazione e nel wellness, e camere e suite rinnovate. Anche quest’anno si prospetta per il Cala di Volpe un’altra stagione di record, successi e grandi novità, infatti, all’attuale Ristorante Matsuhisa si aggiunge una lounge per creare una offerta anche per il post cena; abbiamo rifatto le facciate e l’illuminazione esterna dell’Hotel riportando l’edificio al suo look originale progettato da Jacques Couëlle negli anni Sessanta; è iniziata la prima fase del restyling della Club House del Pevero Golf Club, curato dallo Studio Dodoni Architetti e stiamo anche già progettando le novità del 2025: una nuova palestra e rifaremo il look all’iconico ristorante Barbecue.

Last year not only marked the 60th anniversary of the Cala di Volpe, but also saw the completion of the large-scale refurbishment works on the hotel, which began in 2018 and that have resulted in an evolution for the hotel, transforming it into a destination on its own, with a series of innovations, a generous offer in terms of restaurants and wellness, and renovated rooms and suites. This year will be another fantastic season for the Cala di Volpe, introducing some exciting innovations: the Matsuhisa Restaurant will see the addition of a late-night lounge; we refurbished the facade and the external lighting of the hotel, restoring the original look designed by Jacques Couëlle in the Sixties; the first phase of the restyling of the Club House of the Pevero Golf Club, carried out

by Studio Dordoni Architetti has been completed and we are also already planning more innovations for 2025, with a new gym and a new look for the iconic Barbecue restaurant.

Proseguono restyling e novità anche negli altri alberghi del Gruppo con ulteriori investimenti per arricchire l’offerta della destinazione, abbiamo avviato i lavori di conversione del Cervo Tennis Club in un albergo Lifestyle che aprirà nel 2026, mentre all’Hotel Cervo sarà costruita una Destination Spa con una piscina indoor per arricchire ulteriormente la nostra offerta wellness con l’obiettivo di allungare ancora di più la stagione turistica. Abbiamo ampliato ulteriormente la nostra proposta nella ristorazione con l’apertura di altro beach club esclusivo a Liscia Ruja che si chiama A Mare con una proposta gastronomica di mare firmata dallo chef tre stelle Antonio Mellino.

Inoltre il 2024 entrerà nella storia della Costa Smeralda per la partnership strategica che il nostro Gruppo ha siglato con LVMH per affidargli la gestione di due gioielli della nostra offerta alberghiera: il Romazzino, che già a partire da quest’anno entra a fare parte di Belmond Hotels e il Pitrizza, che nel 2026 diventerà Cheval Blanc e che si aggiungeranno all’attuale operatore degli Hotel Cala di Volpe e Cervo, Marriott International.

I due Hotel, nei prossimi due anni saranno oggetto di un restyling completo che sarà curato da Gilles & Boissier al Pitrizza e Palomba e Serafini al Romazzino. A restyling ultimato gli alberghi si presenteranno con elementi distintivi e di differenziazione, sia nel design, che manterrà una forte connotazione sarda, sia nei servizi, come - ad esempio - la creazione di nuove spa, centri fitness e nuovi ristoranti per arricchire l’offerta gastronomica. Un altro importante traguardo che conseguiremo è rendere gli alberghi conformi ad ottenere la certificazione LEED. Un ulteriore passo per raggiungere gli obiettivi di decarbonizzazione del nostro Gruppo.

Questa nuova partnership proietterà la Costa Smeralda nella galassia LVMH rafforzando ulteriormente la Costa Smeralda conseguendo un’altra importante milestone nel nostro percorso di differenziazione dell’offerta alberghiera e di riposizionamento della destinazione portato avanti con il nostro azionista Qatar Investment Authority dal 2016.

Restyling works and changes are also under way for the Group’s other hotels, with further investments to enhance the destination’s offering. Works have started to convert the Cervo Tennis Club into a lifestyle hotel that will open in 2026, while the Hotel Cervo will see the construction of a Destination Spa complete with indoor pool to further enhance our wellness offer, with the aim of further lengthening the tourist season. We have further expanded our range of restaurants with the opening of another exclusive beach club at Liscia Ruja, which is called A Mare, offering a locally rooted seafood menu designed by the three-star chef Antonio Mellino.

2024 will also mark a milestone in the history of Costa Smeralda with the strategic partnership that our Group has signed with LVMH for the management of two pearls in our portfolio of hotels: the Romazzino, which as of this year is part of the Belmond collection, and the Pitrizza, which in 2026 will become a Cheval Blanc hotel, joining the current operator of the Hotels Cala di Volpe and Cervo, Marriott International.

Over the next two years, the two hotels will undergo a complete restyling that will be curated by Gilles & Boissier at the Pitrizza, and by Palomba & Serafini at the Romazzino. Once these works are complete, the hotels will feature distinctive and characterising elements both in terms of design, which will maintain a strong Sardinian flavour, and in terms of services, such as, for example, the creation of a new wellness proposition as well as new restaurants to widen the culinary options on offer. Another important goal thatwe will be accomplishing for the hotels is LEED certification.

A further step in reaching the decarbonisation goals set by our Group. This new partnership will see Costa Smeralda become part of the LVMH universe, further strengthening the destination and marking another important milestone inour repositioning strategy that we have been pursuing with our shareholder Qatar Investment Authority since 2016 to enhance and differentiate the value proposition of our stunning destination.

Considerata uno dei luoghi più suggestivi al mondo l’Arcipelago di La Maddalena è un vero e proprio ‘paradiso nel paradiso’.

Una costellazione di isole e isolette incastonate in acque cristalline che vanta 180 chilometri di costa, con scogliere mozzafiato e spiagge di sabbia bianchissima che si specchiano sulle acque dalle mille sfumature color smeraldo.

L’arcipelago conta 7 isole principali, La Maddalena, Caprera, Santo Stefano, Santa Maria, Spargi, Budelli e Razzoli e innumerevoli isolotti minori, insenature e cale di straordinaria bellezza. L’isola di La Maddalena è la maggiore di tutte le isole, che si svela come un dipinto vivente dove il blu del cielo e il mare si confondono.

Qui sorge il principale centro abitato. La città, con le sue stradine acciottolate e le case dai colori pastello, emana un fascino antico, invitando i visitatori a perdersi tra le sue pieghe e ad assaporare l’autenticità di un luogo senza tempo.

La seconda isola dell’Arcipelago per estensione è Caprera, un luogo incantevole dal punto di vista naturalistico e dal grande valore storico per aver ospitato Garibaldi negli ultimi 25 anni della sua vita durante il suo esilio. La sua casa è oggi una casa museo aperta al pubblico.

WALKING THROUGH THE STREETS AND ALLEYS OF LUOGOSANTO, THE GAZE SWEEPS OVER NEAT FIELDS TO WHITE CLIFFS OF BONIFACIO

A pochi chilometri da Porto Cervo, immerso nella rigogliosa vegetazione della Gallura, c’è un angolo di pace e profonda spiritualità: Luogosanto.

Fondato nel XIII secolo dai francescani al tempo in cui era in vita San Francesco d’Assisi, il borgo rappresenta un’esperienza unica per chi cerca l’essenza dell’Italia medievale, quel senso di beatitudine interiore che trasmette ogni luogo del Santo.

Una delle opere più importanti da vedere è la basilica di Nostra Signora di Luogosanto. La leggenda narra che la Madonna apparve a due monaci, indicando loro il luogo dove trovare le reliquie dei santi Nicola e Trano, e suggerì di costruire un santuario in suo onore.

La chiesa fu costruita attorno al 1218 dai francescani, tra i primi monasteri eretti in Gallura quando San Francesco era ancora in vita. Al suo interno si trova una Madonna lignea del XVIII secolo, ritrovata in una spiaggia di Arzachena. Nella cripta della basilica pare sia tumulata Elena di Gallura, regina di Gallura, una delle prime sovrane d’Europa.

One of the most important places to visit is the Basilica of Our Lady of Luogosanto. Legend has it that Our Lady appeared to two friars, showing them the place where they could find the relics of Saints Nicholas and Trano, and suggested they build a shrine in her honour. The church was built around 1218 by the Franciscans, among the first monasteries erected in Gallura when St Francis was still alive. Inside, there is a wooden Madonna from the 18th century, found on a beach in Arzachena.

The crypt of the basilica is said to be the burial place of Helena of Gallura, one of the first queens in Europe.

Then there is the Hermitage of San Trano, built in the 13th century.

C’è poi l’Eremo di San Trano, costruito nel XIII secolo. L’eremo si sviluppa attorno a una grotta granitica che funge da abside naturale, proteggendo l’altare di granito. L’interno è semplice, con una navata unica, pochi banchi e pavimentazione in lastre granitiche. Dietro l’altare, sotto la grotta, si trovano le statue dei santi Nicola e Trano.

Qui sorge anche il Castello di Balaiana, uno dei più antichi della Sardegna medievale: è della prima metà del XII secolo. Il nome potrebbe derivare dai Balari, una popolazione preromana della Sardegna. Sono visibili resti di una torre, una cinta muraria a doppia cortina e una cisterna per la raccolta dell’acqua piovana. Un sentiero conduce alla chiesetta di San Leonardo, che fungeva da cappella del castello.

Luogosanto è più di un semplice viaggio nel passato medievale della Sardegna. È un invito a rallentare, a respirare profondamente e a lasciarsi ispirare dall’atmosfera magica di un luogo che armonizza natura, storia e spiritualità.

The hermitage is built around a granite cave that acts as a natural apse, protecting the granite altar. The interior is simple, with a single nave, a few pews and granite slab flooring. Behind the altar, under the cave, are statues of Saints Nicholas and Trano.

Ora, da manager, ha trasformato il calcio in una sfida imprenditoriale di successo e ha mantenuto la Sardegna - e in particolare la Costa Smeralda - nel cuore. Poteva volere di più? Sì! Poteva far abbracciare questi due mondi, e l’ha fatto: ha portato i Globe Soccer Awards - la sua invenzione per premiare l’industria del calcio a Dubai - all’Hotel Cala di Volpe. La prima edizione europea di questo evento planetario, è andato in scena dal 28 al 29 maggio, in un’atmosfera magica. Pochi giorni dopo, Tommaso Bendoni, finalmente rilassato sui divani del Cala, con i superyacht sullo sfondo, racconta l’impresa. “Calcio e Sardegna fanno parte della mia vita, perché mi hanno accompagnato dalla nascita. Il primo legame con il calcio grazie a mio padre, giornalista e dirigente sportivo. Poi a 7 anni è stata mia madre a portarmi tra Tavolara e Molara, lei veneta sognava l’acqua celeste, i graniti, la sabbia fina e ci ha regalato un sogno che continua anno dopo anno”. Enrico Bendoni, padre di Tommaso, è stato giornalista al Messaggero, al Tempo, alla Gazzetta dello Sport, capo ufficio stampa dei Mondiali in Italia del 1990, direttore generale della Juve e della Lazio. “Il calcio è sempre stato l’argomento a pranzo e cena. Now, as a manager, he has turned football into a successful business challenge and has kept Sardinia - and in particular the Costa Smeralda - in his heart. Could he have wanted more?

Yes! He could make these two worlds come together, and he did: he brought the Globe Soccer Awards - his invention to reward the football industry in Dubai - to the Hotel Cala di Volpe. The first European edition of this global event took place on 28 and 29 May and created a magical atmosphere. A few days later, Tommaso Bendoni, finally relaxed on the sofas of the Cala, with the superyachts in the background, recounts the feat. “Football and Sardinia are part of my life, because they have been with me ever since I was born. My first connection with football was through my father, a journalist and sports manager. Then when I was 7 years old, my mother took me to Tavolara and Molara.

She was from Veneto and dreamt of heavenly water, granite, fine sand, and she gave us a dream that continues year after year.” Enrico Bendoni, Tommaso’s father, was a journalist at Messaggero, Tempo, Gazzetta dello Sport, head of the press office of the 1990 World Cup in Italy, and general manager of Juve and Lazio.

“Football was always the topic of conversation at lunch and dinner. I experienced the World Cup as my first

Una passione profondissima: Tommaso Bendoni si laurea in giurisprudenza, esercita per un po’, ma alla fine sceglie il calcio. “Dubai spuntò così, per caso.

Fui inviato a studiare la situazione, sapendo che il Dubai Sports Council cercava di lanciare con qualche difficoltà una conferenza internazionale dedicata allo sport. Partii con la maglietta di Totti, tornai un anno dopo con la Coppa del Mondo dell’Italia. La Dubai International Sports Conference stava crescendo e fu bellissimo vivere il 4 gennaio del 2010 l’inaugurazione della torre più alta del mondo, il Burj Khalifa (828 metri). Mancava qualcosa e negli uffici di Roma partì il progetto finale, dopo aver sentito gli amici dell’ECA, i procuratori sportivi, i dirigenti. Il calcio viveva per i campionati, le coppe, i Mondiali e gli Europei, celebrava i campioni. France Football aveva da anni il Pallone d’Oro. Ma bisognava portare in prima fila altri protagonisti. Pelé e Maradona, Messi e Ronaldo, ma chi li aveva comprati o venduti? Chi aveva costruito il successo di squadre e società?”. L’idea dei Globe Soccer è nata così, per premiare tutti quelli che fanno vivere il calcio. “La prima edizione dicembre del 2010. Furono premiati Miguel Ángel Gil, Adriano Galliani e Jorge Mendes, un presidente, un dirigente storico e un procuratore di fama internazionale. Il seme era talmente forte che sbocciò alla velocità della luce, anno dopo anno, tutti i ruoli protagonisti del calcio sono stati coinvolti e premiati. Oggi, nel 2024, puntiamo a battere un altro record, superando i 100 milioni di votanti per la prossima edizione negli Emirati (75 milioni nel 2023)”. Il calcio è nato in Europa e per Bendoni è stato naturale pensare a una tappa europea per il Globe Soccer Awards. E per un evento internazionale, non poteva che esserci una destinazione internazionale: l’Hotel Cala di Volpe. “Da europei non potevamo dimenticare che le principali leghe di questo sport sono il vero centro di attenzione.

Così, pensando al progetto di accompagnare i dodici mesi di attesa coinvolgendo tutti i continenti nella fase di scelta dei candidati finali, non potevano esserci dubbi su dove andare a piantare un secondo seme, grazie al supporto e la visione di Smeralda Holding, Marriott International e dei suoi manager. Il Qatar ha fatto il resto, un altro paese del Golfo che ha scelto il calcio e ha dimostrato di saperlo organizzare con grande qualità, allestendo la Coppa del Mondo. La prima edizione dei Globe Soccer Europe Awards è stata un successo, un evento di punta che auspichiamo possa diventare un appuntamento fisso”.

He was driven by a deep passion: Tommaso Bendoni graduated in law, practised for a while, but finally chose football. “Dubai came about like that, by chance. I was sent there to assess the situation, knowing that the Dubai Sports Council was trying to launch an international sports conference with some difficulties.

I left with Totti’s shirt and returned a year later with Italy’s World Cup. The Dubai International Sports Conference was growing and it was wonderful to experience the inauguration of the world’s tallest tower, the Burj Khalifa (828 metres), on 4 January 2010. Something was missing, and in the offices in Rome the final project was started, after talking to friends from the ECA, sports agents and managers. Football revolved around championships, cups, World Cups and European competitions that celebrated its champions.

France Football had had the Ballon d’Or for years. But other protagonists had to be brought to the front row.

Pelé and Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo, but who had bought or sold them? Who had built the success of teams and clubs?”. This is how the idea of Globe Soccer came about, to reward all those who make football come alive. “The first edition was in December 2010.

Miguel Ángel Gil, Adriano Galliani and Jorge Mendes, a chairman, a historic manager and an internationally renowned agent were honoured. The seed was so strong that it blossomed at lightning speed, year after year, all the leading roles in football were involved and rewarded. Today, in 2024, we aim to break another record, surpassing 100 million voters for the next edition in the Emirates (75 million in 2023).” Football was born in Europe and it was natural for Bendoni to think of a European stage for the Globe Soccer Awards. And for an international event, there could only be one international destination: the Hotel Cala di Volpe Hotel.

“As Europeans, we could not forget that the major leagues of the sport are the real focus of attention.

So, as we were thinking of a project to connect the twelve-month wait by involving all continents in the selection of final candidates, there could be no doubt as to where we could go to plant a second seed, thanks to the support and vision of Smeralda Holding, Marriott International and its managers. Qatar has done the rest, another Gulf country that has chosen football and has shown that it can organise it with great ability by hosting the World Cup. The first edition of the Globe Soccer Europe Awards was a success, a flagship event that we hope will become a regular feature.”
