More than a PLACE to STAY “Everything changes over time, but emotions remain”.

Franco Mulas Ho visto il Cala di Volpe per la prima volta quando avevo sei anni e il mio sogno di lavorare lì è diventato la mia realtà quotidiana da trentacinque anni. Attenzione ai dettagli ed equilibrio in una continua ricerca della qualità. La forza del Cala di Volpe risiede nelle Persone che vi lavorano e negli Ospiti che ci scelgono. Non si può riassumere in poche righe. È davvero magico: circa il 70% dei nostri ospiti torna anno dopo anno, e lo stesso vale per il 90% dei miei colleghi, che scelgono di restare con noi. Tenendo presente che l’Ospitalità è un Dialogo, non un Monologo, ascoltiamo ogni idea perché c’è sempre un modo migliore per fare ogni cosa. Con la certezza che spesso dietro un’idea sbagliata se ne nasconde una brillante.

Tutto cambia col tempo, ma le emozioni rimangono. Il Cala di Volpe è un paradiso. Il nostro hotel è un gesto d’amore, e noi tutti abbiamo il privilegio di esserne ospiti.

I saw the Cala di Volpe for the first time when I was six and my dream of working there has been my daily life for thirty-five years. Attention to detail and balance in a continuous pursuit of quality. The strength of Cala di Volpe lies in the People who work there and the Guests who choose us. It cannot be summed up in a few lines. It is truly magical: about 70% of our guests return year after year, just as 90% of my colleagues do. Keeping in mind that Hospitality is a Dialogue, not a Monologue, we listen to every idea because there’s always a better way to do everything, and with the certainty that there’s often a brilliant idea behind a bad one. Everything changes over time, but emotions remain.

Si rinnova il sodalizio tra il Cala di Volpe, hotel simbolo della Costa Smeralda, e Dolce&Gabbana, firma di eleganza italiana nel mondo, che questa estate porta per la prima volta la sua iconica fantasia Maiolica sulle terrazze dell’Atrium Bar. Un takeover DG Resort che si traduce in un’esperienza immersiva dove moda, design e lifestyle dialogano con il paesaggio.

Affacciato sull’omonima baia e progettato negli anni Sessanta dall’architetto francese Jacques Couëlle come un immaginario borgo di pescatori, il Cala di Volpe è una sinfonia di forme scolpite, terrazze sospese sull’acqua e interni sinuosi, che racconta un’eleganza senza tempo, perfettamente integrata con i profumi della macchia mediterranea e con le sfumature del mare.

La stampa Maiolica, reinterpretata in un’inedita tonalità gialla, richiama la luce intensa del Sud Italia e dialoga con le sfumature della pietra, del cotto e del mare: divani, cuscini, poltrone e tavolini danno vita a un unico racconto visivo, vibrante ma armonico con l’architettura dell’Hotel.

L’allestimento prosegue a bordo della grande piscina di acqua salata, una delle più estese del Mediterraneo, dove cabane personalizzate e vasi dipinti a mano trasformano gli spazi in un elegante set en plein air.

Cala di Volpe, a landmark hotel on the Gallura coast, renews its partnership with globally renowned Italian house Dolce&Gabbana. This summer, Dolce&Gabbana brings its iconic Maiolica pattern to the terraces of the Atrium Bar for the first time. This DG Resort takeover translates into an immersive experience where fashion, design, and lifestyle interact with the landscape.

Overlooking the bay of the same name and designed in the 1960s by French architect Jacques Couëlle as an imaginary fishing village, Cala di Volpe is a symphony of sculpted forms, terraces suspended over the water, and sinuous interiors, expressing a timeless elegance, perfectly integrated with the scents of the Mediterranean scrub and the nuances of the sea.

The Maiolica print, reinterpreted in a unique yellow hue, recalls the intense light of Southern Italy and interacts with the shades of stone, terracotta, and the sea: sofas, cushions, armchairs, and coffee tables create a unique visual narrative, vibrant yet in harmony with the hotel’s architecture.

The display continues around the large saltwater pool, one of the largest in the Mediterranean, where custom cabanas and hand-painted vases transform the space into an elegant outdoor setting.

The launch of The Exclusive Porto Cervo Collection, the tenth collaboration between the Italian fashion house Dolce&Gabbana and the luxury platform Mytheresa.

When a dress becomes a message, choosing a style becomes a full experience involving sight, touch, heritage, a part of the world and emotions. Dolce&Gabbana and Mytheresa know this very well. Their new collection, designed in collaboration and recently presented in Porto Cervo, was a triumph of perfumes, colors, dance, food, light and celebrities. For the launch of The Exclusive Porto Cervo Collection – the 10th joint project between the Italian fashion house and the luxury platform – Dolce&Gabbana and Mytheresa decided to put the spotlight not only on fashion but also on the imagery around it. Attracting international guests, fashion personalities and lifestyle experts to Porto Cervo, the event lasted two days during which this famous destination turned into a natural stage surrounded by contemporary glamour and Mediterranean heritage.

The event opened at the Hotel Cala di Volpe, a place of international hospitality and beauty that has been a symbol of the charm of the north-eastern coast of Sardinia since the 1960s. The guests were welcomed with an aperitif at sunset in the Atrium Bar featuring sinuous architecture, artisanal details and a view of the turquoise waters of the bay: an experience designed to set the mood for the whole day, elegant but natural, refined but still profoundly rooted in the local area.

Per il lancio di The Exclusive Porto Cervo Collection, decima collaborazione tra la maison italiana e la piattaforma luxury, Dolce&Gabbana e Mytheresa hanno scelto di mettere al centro non solo la moda, ma l’immaginario che la circonda. L’evento, articolato in due giornate, ha riunito ospiti internazionali, volti della moda e protagonisti del lifestyle a Porto Cervo, trasformando la destinazione in una quinta naturale, sospesa tra glamour contemporaneo e memoria mediterranea. La prima giornata si è aperta all’Hotel Cala di Volpe, luogo simbolo dell’ospitalità internazionale e dell’estetica che dagli anni Sessanta definisce il fascino della Costa Smeralda.

Con il calare della sera, l’atmosfera si è fatta più conviviale al Cala di Volpe Barbecue, dove Francis Belin, CEO di Mytheresa, e Alfonso Dolce, CEO di Dolce&Gabbana, hanno ospitato una cena esclusiva. La mise en scène ha unito il gusto per il dettaglio, la ritualità della tavola e quella naturale teatralità che appartiene al linguaggio di Dolce&Gabbana. A seguire, un DJ set ha accompagnato la notte, aggiungendo una nota più vibrante a un evento nato per celebrare l’estate nel suo registro più sofisticato. Il secondo giorno il racconto si è spostato nella Piazzetta di Porto Cervo, trasformata per l’occasione in un mercato dal puro spirito italiano curato nei dettagli. Qui l’esperienza ha assunto un carattere più aperto e narrativo, intrecciando moda, tradizione e cultura locale. Le performance folkloristiche sarde hanno portato al centro della scena l’identità dell’isola, il senso della festa e il valore dell’incontro, creando un dialogo tra l’universo internazionale dei due brand e la ricchezza del territorio. La collezione è rimasta sullo sfondo come filo conduttore estetico: un omaggio all’estate, alla natura in fiore e ai paesaggi assolati di Porto Cervo, con oltre 150 proposte tra womenswear, menswear, kidswear e homewear. Abiti leggeri, sete fluide, lini, cotoni, motivi floreali e richiami costieri hanno accompagnato l’evento senza dominarlo, diventando parte di un racconto più ampio, in cui l’abito non è solo prodotto ma espressione di un modo di vivere. Tra gli ospiti, Nora Attal, Rebecca Donaldson, Mathieu Simoneau e Kim Turnbull hanno contribuito a definire l’immagine di un appuntamento mondano ma misurato, perfettamente coerente con il contesto.

Later in the evening, the atmosphere became more convivial at the Cala di Volpe Barbecue where Francis Belin, CEO of Mytheresa, and Alfonso Dolce, CEO of Dolce&Gabbana, hosted an exclusive dinner. The arrangement and food presentation combined taste for detail, the ritual of the table and that spontaneous theatricality that is part of Dolce&Gabbana. The evening continued with a DJ to add a more vibrant note to an event conceived to celebrate summer in its most sophisticated aspect. On the second day, the celebrations continued in the Square of Porto Cervo which for the occasion was transformed into a typical Italian market with great attention to even the smallest details. Here the experience expanded, adding a narrative character to it, intertwining fashion, tradition and local culture. Sardinian folk performances helped to put focus on the island’s identity, the sense of celebration and the value of exchange, creating a dialogue between the international scope of the two brands and the richness of this area. Throughout this time, the collection served as a common aesthetic thread: paying homage to summer, nature in bloom and the sunny landscapes of Porto Cervo with more than 150 models including women’s, men’s and kids’ clothing as well as homewares. Light dresses, smooth silks, linens, cottons, floral and coastal motifs animated the event without dominating it, becoming part of a larger story in which the dress is not merely a product but an expression of a way of life. Among the guests were Nora Attal, Rebecca Donaldson, Mathieu Simoneau and Kim Turnbull who contributed to defining the image of a social but measured event coherently within its context.

Has the creation of new content become increasingly important?

More than creating content, our goal is to create memorable experiences, because true value lies in the ability to offer authentic, exclusive, and unforgettable moments that create a lasting emotional connection with the destination.

This philosophy guides our events strategy. The exclusive concerts hosted at our properties are a concrete example of this vision. This year, we will welcome world-renowned artists such as Robbie Williams and Katy Perry, who will headline two events expected to attract guests from around the globe.

Ma solo nel Novecento, con il crollo della mortalità infantile, i progressi dell’igiene pubblica e della medicina, la longevità è diventata un fenomeno di massa: oggi l’Italia è tra i Paesi più longevi d’Europa. In Sardegna, il nome del Professore Gianni Pes è legato alla scoperta della prima Blue Zone, individuata insieme a Michel Poulain nelle aree montane del centro-est dell’isola. Eppure, a distanza di oltre vent’anni, il quadro potrebbe essersi modificato: Arzachena, con Porto Cervo e buona parte della Costa Smeralda, mostra segni di longevità che meritano attenzione. L’ipotesi più suggestiva è che alcune generazioni nate nella Gallura rurale abbiano conservato fattori protettivi della vita tradizionale, beneficiando poi del miglioramento economico, sanitario e abitativo intervenuto dagli anni Sessanta in avanti. Ne abbiamo parlato con Gianni Pes, medico, ricercatore e professore associato dell’Università degli Studi di Sassari.

Professore Pes, le aree interne della Sardegna, in particolare l’Ogliastra e la Barbagia, detengono tuttora un primato di longevità a livello mondiale?

In linea di massima sì. I dati demografici ci dicono che poco più di una decina di comuni nell’area montuosa del Gennargentu restano ai vertici mondiali della longevità e possono essere messi a confronto con altre aree del pianeta note per l’alta frequenza di centenari, come Okinawa in Giappone, la penisola di Nicoya in Costa Rica e l’isola greca di Icaria.

Queste aree furono poi chiamate “Blue Zones”, ma il nome nacque quasi per caso: oltre venticinque anni fa segnavo i comuni longevi su una carta geografica con un pennarello blu. Sul piano scientifico, però, una Blue Zone non è un’etichetta folkloristica: è una piccola area relativamente omogenea, con una longevità eccezionale che deve essere verificata con metodi demografici accurati.

Che cosa avete osservato invece ad Arzachena?

Già i dati amministrativi locali e gli articoli di stampa segnalavano da tempo la presenza costante di centenari ad Arzachena e in altri comuni della Gallura. A incuriosirmi, però, è stato soprattutto un dettaglio storico: l’ufficio di stato civile

Longevity has always figured largely in the human imagination.

But it was not until the decline in infant mortality and the progress in public sanitation and medicine of the twentieth century that longevity became a mass phenomenon. Today, Italy is one of the European countries where people live the longest. In Sardinia, the name of Professor Gianni Pes is associated with the discovery of the first Blue Zone, which he and Michel Poulain identified in the mountainous central-eastern part of the island. And yet, more than twenty years later, there may be some changes to this picture: Arzachena, along with Porto Cervo and most of the northeast coast, show noteworthy signs of longevity. The most interesting hypothesis is that certain generations born in rural Gallura have preserved the protective factors associated with traditional lifestyles, while also benefiting from improvements in the economy, sanitation and living conditions since the nineteen-seventies. We discussed the theory with Gianni Pes, a physician, researcher and associate professor at Università degli Studi in Sassari.

Professor Pes, does the Sardinian hinterland, and particularly the Ogliastra and Barbagia areas, still hold the world record for longevity?

Pretty much. The demographic statistics tell us that about a dozen communities in the mountainous Gennargentu area still set the record in terms of longevity, and are comparable with other parts of the planet known for their high percentage of centenarians, such as Okinawa in Japan, the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica and the Greek island of Icaria. These areas came to be known as “Blue Zones”, though the name arose pretty much by chance: more than twenty-five years ago, I marked the longest-living towns on a map with a blue pen. In scientific terms, however, Blue Zone is more than just a colourful term: it’s a small, relatively homogeneous area where people live exceptionally long lives, verified using accurate demographic methods.

And what have you observed in Arzachena?

Statistics from the local administration and articles in the papers had been commenting on the constant presence of centenarians in Arzachena and other municipalities in Gallura for some time. What got me wondering, though, was a historical detail: 43

mi aveva segnalato l’esistenza di un centenario deceduto ad Arzachena a 102 anni addirittura nel 1903, un evento rarissimo in un’epoca in cui la speranza di vita era ancora molto bassa.

Da lì è nata l’idea di ricostruire, in modo sistematico, la sopravvivenza delle coorti nate ad Arzachena tra il 1900 e il 1925.

Cosa suggerisce il caso di Arzachena in relazione allo sviluppo della Costa Smeralda?

Il caso di Arzachena suggerisce che modernizzazione e longevità non siano necessariamente in contraddizione tra loro. Se lo sviluppo economico migliora il reddito, le abitazioni, l’accesso alle cure, ai servizi e alla mobilità, ma non cancella del tutto le reti familiari, le abitudini alimentari e il rapporto con il territorio, allora può crearsi una combinazione favorevole. È proprio questa, a mio avviso, l’ipotesi più interessante da verificare.

In questo quadro quanto conta l’alimentazione?

Negli studi sulla Sardegna interna è emerso che la dieta da sola non basta a spiegare le differenze territoriali della longevità; molto rilevanti sembrano invece l’attività fisica occupazionale e le caratteristiche geografiche del territorio. Per la Costa Smeralda, bisogna considerare che le generazioni oggi longeve avevano già formato i propri gusti e le proprie pratiche alimentari prima dell’esplosione del turismo e dei consumi contemporanei. In questo senso, il caso arzachenese sarebbe l’effetto di una transizione vissuta tardi, da generazioni che avevano interiorizzato abitudini diverse. Anche qui, però, bisogna parlare di ipotesi e non di prove definitive.

Quali fattori potrebbero aver contribuito?

Potrebbe quindi essersi prodotta una combinazione favorevole: conservare alcuni elementi protettivi della vita tradizionale, riducendone al tempo stesso la povertà, l’insicurezza alimentare e la difficoltà di accesso ai servizi sanitari.

Anche l’ambiente della Costa Smeralda ha avuto un ruolo?

La bassa densità edilizia di molte aree, la presenza di spazi naturali, la possibilità di trascorrere tempo all’aperto e la limitata industrializzazione potrebbero avere contribuito alla qualità della vita. Non sarebbe però corretto attribuire automaticamente alla vicinanza del mare un effetto sulla longevità. Occorrerebbe analizzare l’esposizione all’inquinamento, le condizioni abitative, le occupazioni svolte e gli spostamenti di ciascun individuo nel corso della vita.

Che insegnamento porterebbe questa nuova Blu Zone?

Lo sviluppo può diventare una risorsa quando migliora il benessere materiale senza cancellare i legami sociali, le abitudini alimentari e il rapporto con il territorio. È questa, al momento, l’ipotesi più suggestiva che lo studio di Arzachena ci invita a esplorare.

the registry office had told me about a centenarian who passed away in Arzachena at the age of 102 way back in 1903 - an extremely rare event at a time when life expectancy was very low.

Hence the idea of systematically reconstructing the lifespan of people born in Arzachena between 1900 and 1925.

What does the Arzachena case suggest about the development of the area?

The Arzachena case suggests that modernization and longevity are not necessarily opposed. When economic development improves income, homes, and access to medical treatment, services and mobility without eliminating family networks, eating habits and the people’s relationship with the land, the two factors can be combined beneficially. And this is the most interesting hypothesis to investigate, in my opinion.

How important is diet in this picture?

Studies of inland Sardinia have revealed that diet alone is not sufficient to explain territorial differences in aging, but that the amount of physical activity involved in people’s occupations and the geographical features of the land seem to play an important role. In the case of the northeast coast of Sardinia, it’s important to realize that the generations who are now turning out to be long-lived had already formed their tastes and eating habits long before the explosion in tourism and the modern diet. And so Arzachena demonstrates the results of a transition that was experienced late in life, by generations who had already internalized a different lifestyle. But here too, we’re talking about hypotheses, not definitive proof.

What factors might have contributed to this effect?

It could be the result of a favorable combination: preserving a number of the protective factors associated with traditional lifestyles, while at the same time reducing poverty, food insecurity and lack of medical services.

So did the environment of the northeast coast play a role in this?

The low density of construction in many areas, with the presence of pristine natural areas where people can spend a lot of time outdoors and only limited industrialization, may have contributed to people’s quality of life. But it would be wrong to attribute an effect of automatically increasing longevity to the presence of the sea. We need to look at factors such as exposure to pollution, living conditions, occupation, and the places where each individual has lived over the course of a lifespan.

So what can we learn from this new Blue Zone?

That development can be a resource when it makes us materially prosperous without eliminating our social bonds, eating habits and relationship with the land. This is the most interesting hypothesis that the study of Arzachena invites us to explore at the moment.

What were your thoughts when you set eyes on Cala di Volpe for the first time? What made you fall in love with the place?

I remember the first time I saw Cala di Volpe, twenty-six years ago with my mother, as if it were yesterday. Our yacht was anchored at Porto Cervo, and a friend had told me about a really great hotel: Cala di Volpe. We took the boat out in the afternoon and stopped for lunch at the Barbecue by the pool. My mother ordered a tuna steak, and when she had finished it, she exclaimed, “That was the best tuna I’ve ever eaten!” That very day I promised myself I’d go back with my family, and I kept this promise ten years later. We’ve been regulars ever since. The architecture at Cala di Volpe is unique, the food unparalleled, the pool a dream.

You’ve been coming back for many years now.

How do you feel when you return, and what makes you and your family choose Cala di Volpe summer after summer?

Being here with you is like being at home. I have an Italian heart: my mother comes from Romagna and my father from the Veneto. I was born in Brazil, but I’ve always felt Italian.

You’ve been to plenty of places all over the world; what makes this place so special for you?

We keep coming back because the natural set-

Che cosa ha pensato la prima volta che ha visto il Cala di Volpe e che cosa l’ha fatta innamorare di questo luogo?

Ricordo come fosse oggi la prima volta in cui vidi il Cala di Volpe, ventisei anni fa, insieme a mia madre.

Eravamo ancorati a Porto Cervo con il nostro yacht e un amico mi aveva parlato di un albergo bellissimo: il Cala di Volpe. Arrivammo in barca nel pomeriggio e ci fermammo a pranzo al Barbecue, davanti alla piscina. Mia madre ordinò un trancio di tonno e alla fine esclamò: ‘Il miglior tonno della mia vita!’. Quel giorno promisi a me stesso che sarei tornato con la famiglia e, dieci anni dopo, mantenni la promessa. Da allora non manchiamo mai. L’architettura del Cala di Volpe è unica, la cucina impagabile e la piscina uno spettacolo.

Tornate qui da molti anni. Quale emozione prova ogni volta che arriva e che cosa spinge lei e la sua famiglia a scegliere il Cala di Volpe estate dopo estate?

Stare qui, con voi, per me è come essere a casa. Il mio cuore è italiano: mia madre è romagnola e mio padre veneto. Sono nato in Brasile, ma mi sono sempre sentito italiano.

Avete visitato molte destinazioni nel mondo. Che cosa rende questo luogo così speciale per voi?

nioso e le persone che lavorano al Cala di Volpe sono diventate parte della nostra famiglia: riescono a farci sentire davvero a casa. Quando qualcuno va in pensione o sceglie una nuova opportunità, ne sentiamo molto la mancanza. Con molti di loro restiamo in contatto anche durante l’inverno.

Ci racconta una sua giornata tipo al Cala di Volpe?

Qual è l’angolo più suggestivo e il momento della giornata che ama di più?

Dopo la colazione mi piace raggiungere la spiaggia a piedi. Il sentiero che conduce al mare è rimasto così naturale e intatto da regalarmi, ogni giorno, una nuova emozione. Amo molto camminare: ogni sera arrivo a piedi fino al Romazzino e, al ritorno, ci fermiamo tutte le sere al Bar per bere il Bellini di Andrea, poi ceniamo tutti insieme a Le Grand. È un’esperienza culinaria unica.

Nel corso degli anni ha creato un legame profondo con molti membri dello staff. Quanto è importante ritrovare, stagione dopo stagione, le persone di sempre?

Rappresenta il cento per cento della vacanza. È senza dubbio l’aspetto più importante. Siamo molto affezionati a tutti loro, ma questo non significa che la qualità del servizio ne risenta; al contrario, sono ancora più attenti e premurosi.

Qual è il momento più speciale vissuto al Cala di Volpe, quello che conserva nel cuore più di ogni altro?

Ho cinque nipoti e non potrò mai dimenticare il momento in cui hanno mosso i loro primi passi proprio al Cala di Volpe. Un altro motivo per scegliere il Cala di Volpe: i miei nipoti adorano praticare sport acquatici.

Se dovesse descrivere il Cala di Volpe con sole tre parole, quali sceglierebbe?

Insieme, eleganza, qualità.

ting is unique, the service is harmonious, and the people who work at Cala di Volpe are like a part of our family: they really make us feel at home. When somebody retires, or goes off to pursue another opportunity, we miss them a lot. We keep in touch with many of them even over the winter.

Can you describe your typical day at Cala di Volpe? What is the most beautiful spot, and which time of day do you like best?

After breakfast I like to walk to the beach. The path down to the sea is still so natural and pristine that I feel something new every time I walk along it. I really love walking: I walk to Romazzino, and on the way back we stop every evening at the Bar for one of Andrea’s Bellinis before sitting down together for dinner at Le Grand. It’s a unique culinary experience.

You have formed deep ties with many members of the staff over the years. How important is it for you to find the same people there, season after season?

That is one hundred percent of our holiday. It is undoubtedly the most important thing. We are really fond of them all, but this doesn’t mean they compromise on the quality of the service: quite the contrary, they are even more attentive and considerate.

What is your most special experience at Cala di Volpe, your favourite memory?

I have five grandchildren, and I’ll never forget when they took their first steps right here at Cala di Volpe.

Another reason why Cala di Volpe is so special: my grandchildren love spending their days enjoying water sports.

If you had to describe Cala di Volpe in just three words, what would they be?

Togetherness, elegance, quality.

Mi soffermo spesso davanti alle fotografie storiche e mi trattengo nel cortile pensando che ognuno di noi possiede un potenziale unico per costruire un’eredità significativa. La sua giornata inizia spesso con una nuotata all’alba.

In che modo questi momenti influenzano il suo equilibrio personale durante la giornata?

Prima delle otto del mattino entro in mare e nuoto dalla baia del Romazzino fino alla baia del Cala di Volpe. Tra andata e ritorno sono circa 6,7 km. È lì che sento di entrare in una connessione profonda con l’anima della Sardegna. È un momento di meditazione e di centratura che mi prepara alla giornata. Il nuoto in mare aperto sulle lunghe distanze è un’esperienza esaltante, ma allo stesso tempo ti invita a prendere consapevolezza dei tuoi limiti. Ed è proprio questa la base del successo, in ogni ambito della vita.

Oltre al tempo trascorso in hotel, le piace esplorare i dintorni?

Devo ammettere che durante i miei soggiorni al Cervo sono sempre stato così appagato da non sentire il bisogno di esplorare oltre.

Quanto sono importanti per lei questi momenti?

Sono fondamentali. Trovare uno scopo e provare entusiasmo nell’apprendimento è una fonte di gioia. Da imprenditore ho conseguito il dottorato all’Università di San Gallo piuttosto tardi. Ho completato la versione destinata alla pubblicazione del mio libro, Governing Continuous Tran-

You often return to the Cervo Hotel and describe it as ‘home’. What makes this place so special for you?

It is a distinct blend of its team, authentic attention to detail, and a space that empowers travel into a unique story. The late Aga Khan’s extraordinary vision for a global model has been endlessly copied around the world but timelessly captured at the Cervo. I often stop in front of the historic photographs and linger in the courtyard, thinking: each one of us carries a unique potential to build a meaningful legacy, no matter how small but impactful. The team at the Cervo has uniquely lived up to this aspiration, to this every day.

Your day often begins with an early swim in the sea. How do these moments influence your personal balance throughout the day?

Before eight o’clock in the morning,I step into the waters of Romazzino Bay and swim to Cala di Volpe Bay. It is roughly 6.7km there and back. That’s where I make a unique connection with the soul of Sardinia. It is a moment for meditating and recentering for the day.

While long-distance open-sea swimming is uplifting, it equally invites you to develop self-awareness for your very limitations. That’s the essential foundation for success, in every field of life.

Beyond your time at the hotel, do you enjoy exploring the surrounding area?

I must admit that I have always been so content during my stays at Cervo to explore any further.

You enjoy reading in your favorite room, 166. How important are moments of calm and reflection in your life?

It is essential. Finding purpose and excitement in learning is a source of joy. As a business owner, I completed my PhD at St Gallen University rather late. I finalized it for publication as a book at the Cervo Hotel: Governing Continuous Transforma53

Il Cervo Hotel, più di molte altre strutture di lusso, ha preservato questa autenticità: governare il cambiamento con uno scopo chiaro, restando sempre fedele alle proprie origini.

Qual è stata la sua impressione quando ha visto per la prima volta il Cervo Hotel?

Il nostro legame con la Sardegna è iniziato altrove. Ci è voluto del tempo prima di scoprire il Cervo Hotel. Oggi, però, non scambierei l’autenticità, l’attenzione ai dettagli e il calore del Cervo con nessun altro hotel di Porto Cervo.

C’è un ricordo che conserva con particolare affetto?

La grandezza di una storia si misura con il passare del tempo. La più bella risale a una serata mondana del 2008, apparentemente ordinaria, che ha finito per dare vita a una splendida amicizia tra le nostre due famiglie. In modi che allora erano del tutto inimmaginabili, questa amicizia ha nutrito e trasformato le nostre famiglie fino a oggi. Continuiamo a celebrare la Sardegna come quel luogo unico che ha reso possibile tutto questo.

Ha instaurato un rapporto speciale con lo staff?

Certamente. Antonella, del front office, è un vero punto di riferimento, un ponte tra passato e futuro: è il mio primo passo verso quella sensazione di essere a casa. L’intero team del Concierge – con alcuni dei quali mi incontro anche durante gli inverni a St. Moritz – rappresenta un perfetto equilibrio tra professionalità e sincera umiltà. Anche tra il personale della colazione e dell’housekeeping ci sono molte persone che mi fanno sorridere non appena le incontro. Hanno la straordinaria capacità di farti sentire speciale, ricordando le tue abitudini e anticipando quei dettagli invisibili che definiscono davvero chi sei.

Our connection with Sardinia began elsewhere. It took us a while to discover the Hotel Cervo. But today, I wouldn’t trade the authenticity, attention to detail, and refined warmth of the Cervo for any other hotel in Porto Cervo Is there a story you remember with particular fondness?

How great a story is you can tell with passage of time.

The best story goes back to a rather mundane socialite evening in 2008, eventually leading to building the most beautiful friendship between our two families. In unimaginable ways, this friendship has nurtured and transformed our respective families to this day. We continue celebrating Sardinia as this unique spot that made it all happen.

Have you developed a special relationship with any of the hotel staff?

Of course. Antonella from the front office is a monument bridging the past into the future – she is my first step into ‘home’. The entire Concierge team – some of whom I relate to from winters in St. Moritz – stand for outstanding professionalism and heartful humility. Amongst the breakfast and housekeeping team, there are many that instantly put a smile on my face. All of them have the brilliance to make you feel special by appreciating your habits and, more importantly, anticipate lesser tangible particularities that define you as a person.

If you had to describe the Costa Smeralda in three words, which ones would you choose and why?

Authentic, pure, lots of character. It calls for respect.

Despite all global influences, its people have not lost their connection with their roots. That makes it a unique microcosm, beyond all the world’s noise.

African Queen è stata fondata sulla Costa Azzurra nel 1969. Che cosa rappresenta per lei questo marchio e quali valori hanno contribuito a renderlo l’icona che è oggi?

Per me African Queen è sempre stata molto più di un ristorante: è uno stato d’animo. Dal 1969 incarna un particolare stile di vita tipico della Riviera, fatto di eleganza senza formalità, glamour senza ostentazione. Ciò che l’ha resa un’icona per oltre cinquant’anni è la coerenza con il suo spirito: la stessa gioia di vivere, lo stesso senso dell’ospitalità, la stessa dedizione alle cose belle e semplici, realizzate in modo impeccabile. È un marchio costruito sull’atemporalità, non sulle mode, ed è proprio questo il motivo per cui continua a essere così attuale ancora oggi.

Che tipo di esperienza desidera offrire agli ospiti di African Queen in Costa Smeralda?

Vorrei che gli ospiti ritrovassero lo stesso spirito spensierato e baciato dal sole che ha definito African Queen fin dalle sue origini, reinterpretato però attraverso l’energia unica della Costa Smeralda. Si tratta di pranzi che si trasformano naturalmente in serate, di una cucina profondamente mediterranea e di un luogo dove il mare, la luce e la compagnia contano tanto quanto ciò che arriva nel piatto. Più che un semplice pasto, è un’atmosfera, uno stato d’animo.

Due icone del Mediterraneo si incontrano: il glamour dell’Hotel Cala di Volpe e l’identità di African Queen. Qual è il legame tra questi due mondi?

Entrambi custodiscono una certa leggenda mediterranea: quell’equilibrio tra lusso discreto, bellezza naturale e stile spontaneo che non può essere costruito a tavolino, ma solo conquistato nel tempo. Cala di Volpe e African Queen condividono lo stesso DNA: sono nati entrambi dall’amore per questa costa e da allora le sono rimasti fedeli. Riunirli è sembrato meno una partnership e più il naturale incontro di due storie destinate a incrociarsi.

Il suo rapporto con Cala di Volpe è iniziato nel 2021 con Beefbar Italy. Come si è evoluto e cosa l’ha spinta a investire ulteriormente?

Quello iniziato con Beefbar nel 2021 non è mai stato pensato come un progetto isolato, ma come l’inizio di un vero dialogo con l’hotel e con tutto ciò che rappresenta. In questi anni ho visto quanto naturalmente il nostro mondo si integri con il loro e quanto gli ospiti abbiano apprezzato questa sintonia. Portare oggi African Queen al Cala di Volpe significa approfondire questo percorso, offrendo qualcosa di complementare, non ripetitivo: un’altra espressione della nostra identità, in un luogo che ha già dimostrato di comprenderla e valorizzarla.

Che cosa ama di più della Sardegna?

La sua autenticità. Nonostante tutto il fascino e il glamour che circondano la Costa Smeralda, la Sardegna è riuscita a preservare un’anima più selvaggia e genuina: la luce, il mare, il ritmo della vita. È proprio questo contrasto, tra raffinatezza e natura incontaminata, a renderla un luogo così stimolante in cui lavorare.

African Queen was founded on the French Riviera in 1969. What does this brand represent for you, and which values have helped make it the icon it is today?

African Queen has always been more than a restaurant to me, it’s a state of mind. Since 1969 it has embodied a certain art of living particular to the Riviera: elegance without formality, glamour without pretension. What has kept it iconic for over five decades is its consistency of spirit, the same joy, the same sense of hospitality, the same devotion to beautiful, simple things done exceptionally well. It’s a brand built on timelessness rather than trends, and that’s exactly why it still feels so relevant today.

What kind of experience do you aim to offer guests at African Queen in Costa Smeralda?

I want guests to feel the same carefree, sun-drenched spirit that has defined African Queen since its origins, but reimagined for Costa Smeralda’s own unique energy. It’s about long lunches that drift into evenings, a menu rooted in the Mediterranean, and a setting where the sea, the light, and the company all matter as much as what’s on the plate. It’s less about a meal and more about a mood.

Two Mediterranean icons come together: the glamour of Hotel Cala di Volpe and the identity of African Queen. What connects these two worlds?

Both are guardians of a certain Mediterranean legend, that mix of understated luxury, natural beauty, and effortless style that can’t be manufactured, only earned over time.

Cala di Volpe and African Queen share the same DNA: they were both born from a love of this coastline and have stayed true to it ever since. Bringing them together felt less like a partnership and more like a natural convergence of two stories that were always meant to meet.

Your relationship with Cala di Volpe began in 2021 with Beefbar Italy. How has it evolved, and what inspired you to invest further?

What started with Beefbar in 2021 was never meant to be a one-off, it was the beginning of a real dialogue with the hotel and everything it represents. Over these years I’ve seen how naturally our world fits into theirs, and how much our guests have responded to that pairing. Bringing African Queen to Cala di Volpe is now a way of deepening that story, of offering something complementary rather than repetitive, another facet of who we are, in a place that has already shown it understands us.

What do you love most about Sardinia?

Its authenticity. Despite all the glamour associated with Costa Smeralda, Sardinia has managed to protect something wilder and more genuine underneath, the light, the sea, the pace of life. That contrast, between refinement and rawness, is exactly what makes it so inspiring to work in.

Fire is the fulcrum around which Chef Marco Urru’s Korean BBQ unfolds: a method that combines Beefbar’s international identity with a cuisine grounded in technique, research, and conviviality. The heat of the embers is the essential element that enhances the raw ingredients through a balance of intensity, contrasts, and harmony of flavors. Star of the dish is Wagyu fillet, enhanced by a 24-hour marinade in soy, honey, and fermented chili pepper. Over the embers, the sugars caramelize the surface and retain the juices, while the pickles introduce a fresh, bold note that balances the richness of the meat. Nothing is superfluous: each element complements the Wagyu without detracting from its starring role. Apparent simplicity belies precision work, based on respect for timing, technique, and raw ingredients. The perfect harmony of a few elements becomes the main tool for expressing the entire identity of the dish.

Protagonista è il gambero rosso, valorizzato con una lavorazione delicata che ne preserva dolcezza, eleganza e succulenza durante la breve cottura dei culurgiones. “L’esperienza di Orani è rimasta l’esperienza più forte della mia vita”. Detto da un artista e scultore che ha trascorso gran parte della sua esistenza tra Manhattan e Long Island, lasciando il proprio segno su alcuni degli edifici più importanti del nordest degli Stati Uniti, rende bene l’idea di quanto Orani sia un piccolo gioiello nel cuore della Sardegna. A pronunciare queste parole fu Costantino Nivola, il cittadino più noto del paese, che nel 1938 fu costretto a lasciare l’Italia per sfuggire al regime fascista, insieme alla moglie Ruth Guggenheim, ebrea. Oggi il suo paese natale lo ricorda anche attraverso il Museo Nivola, tra i più importanti musei d’arte contemporanea della Sardegna.

Adagiato ai piedi del Monte Gonare, in una terra di antiche testimonianze nuragiche e domus de janas, Orani è un borgo che sorprende, dove la Sardegna più autentica convive con una forte anima contemporanea, lasciata in eredità proprio dall’artista.

Dopo l’esilio negli Stati Uniti, Nivola lavora come art director per riviste di architettura e stringe un rapporto destinato a cambiare la sua carriera con Le Corbusier. L’incontro con il maestro del Modernismo lo spinge ad abbandonare la pittura figurativa per avventurarsi in una stagione di intensa sperimentazione che culmina, nel 1950, con l’invenzione del sand casting, una tecnica che utilizza matrici

“My experience in Orani is still the most powerful experience I ever had”. The fact that these words were said by an artist and sculptor who spent most of his life between Manhattan and Long Island, giving his own personal touch to some of the most important buildings in the Northeastern United States is further proof of the beauty of Orani, a little gem in the heart of Sardinia. The artist who said those words was Costantino Nivola, the most renowned citizen of Orani. In 1938, he was forced to flee the country to escape from the Fascist regime along with his Jewish wife, Ruth Guggenheim. Today, his hometown still pays tribute to his memory through the Nivola Museum, one of the most important museums of contemporary art in Sardinia.

Standing at the foot of Mount Gonare in a land filled with ancient remains of the Nuragic civilisation and domus de janas, Orani is an extraordinary village where the most authentic essence of Sardinia coexists with a strong contemporary vision, the legacy left by the artist himself.

During his exile in the United States, Nivola worked as an art director for architecture magazines, building a solid relationship with Le Corbusier that would shape his entire career. His friendship with the master of Modernism made him lose his interest in figurative painting and enter a phase of intense experimentation which culminated in 1950 with the invention of

Sarà proprio questo linguaggio a consacrarlo a livello internazionale, a partire dalla decorazione dello showroom Olivetti sulla Fifth Avenue di New York, progettato dallo studio BBPR. Ma il legame con Orani non venne mai reciso. Nel 1953 immagina Pergola Village, un visionario progetto di riqualificazione urbana pubblicato sulla rivista americana Interiors: case dipinte di bianco con uno zoccolo azzurro e una grande pergola di vite a collegare le strade, trasformando il paese in uno spazio condiviso dove architettura e socialità dialogano tra loro. Un’idea che oggi rivive nella reinterpretazione firmata da Stefano Boeri, grazie alla quale il centro storico invita a passeggiare tra vicoli bianchi e azzurri, pergolati, melograni e botteghe artigiane.

Poco distante, la facciata della chiesa di Nostra Signora d’Itria custodisce un’altra preziosa testimonianza del suo talento: i graffiti realizzati nel 1958, unica opera pubblica europea eseguita da Nivola con questa tecnica.

E poi, il Museo Nivola, che conserva la più importante collezione al mondo dedicata all’artista, con oltre duecento opere tra sculture, dipinti, terracotte, rilievi in sandcasting, modelli per monumenti e lavori grafici. Accanto alla collezione permanente trovano spazio mostre temporanee che mantengo-

It is thanks to this innovative technique that he would become internationally renowned, starting with the decorating of the Olivetti showroom on Fifth Avenue in New York, designed by the BBPR studio. However, his connection with Orani was never lost. In 1953, he designed Pergola Village, a visionary urban redevelopment project published in the American magazine Interiors: houses painted in white with a blue trim and a large pergola made of vines connecting the streets, conceiving the town as a shared space where architecture and social life are equally appreciated. An idea that has been recently revived with a new interpretation by Stefano Boeri where the historic centre welcomes visitors for a stroll among white and blue alleys, pergolas, pomegranate trees and artisans’ shops. Not so far away, another important example of his talent can be admired in the façade of the Church of Nostra Signora d’Itria: some graffiti created in 1958, a unique European public work carried out by Nivola with this technique. And then the Museo Nivola which houses the most important collection in the world of the artist’s creations with more than two hundred pieces including sculptures, paintings, terracotta sculptures, sand-molded reliefs, models for monuments and graphic works. A pochi passi emergono gli affascinanti ruderi dell’antica chiesa di Sant’Andrea Apostolo, a cui è intitolata anche la parrocchiale ottocentesca, riconoscibile per l’elegante facciata neoclassica a tempietto. Nelle vicinanze si trova anche la chiesa di San Giovanni Battista, che conserva un monumentale organo settecentesco.

A dominare il paesaggio è però il Monte Gonare, alto oltre mille metri. Tra boschi di lecci e roverelle, ciclamini, orchidee, peonie e profumato elicriso, i sentieri conducono al santuario mariano sulla vetta, meta di pellegrini ed escursionisti. Secondo la tradizione, fu il giudice Gonario di Torres a farlo costruire come ex voto dopo essere sopravvissuto a un naufragio di ritorno dalla Seconda Crociata.

Oggi, dalla piccola chiesa in granito, lo sguardo si apre a 360 gradi, regalando uno dei panorami più emozionanti dell’entroterra sardo.

The 19th-century church is also dedicated to this saint and features an elegant neoclassical temple façade. Another monument located in the proximity is the church of San Giovanni Battista which preserves a magnificent 18th-century organ. The landscape is dominated by Mount Gonare standing at more than one thousand metres high. Paths winding through forests of holm oaks and downy oaks, cyclamens, orchids, peonies and fragrant strawflowers, lead to a Marian sanctuary perched high above, a popular destination among pilgrims and hikers. According to tradition, it was built

by Gonario di Torres who wanted it as a votive offering after surviving a shipwreck on his return from the Second Crusade. Today, the small church in granite offers a 360-degree panorama with one of the most breathtaking views of the Sardinian hinterland.

The experience starts at sunset in the Vegetable Garden of the Hotel Cala di Volpe: here our guests and their families have the first-class opportunity to feed our goats and chickens, collect eggs and vegetables from the farm.

As the sun sets, however, the space transforms into a charming open-air rustic restaurant, accommodating up to 20 guests and offering an intimate dining experience unlike any other (available exclusively for private events and upon request).
