An island in an island THE MADDALENA ARCHIPELAGO, AN UNSPOILT WORLD WAITING TO BE DISCOVERED

A

A place with unchanged charm, of still wild and unspoilt nature, where sunsets invade the entire island and even the ferry journey to reach it becomes a dream. This is La Maddalena and its archipelago, a constellation of islets hiding enchanting beaches like the Pink Beach, where docking and bathing are prohibited to safeguard its unique pink grains.

It can be admired from afar, from Palau harbour, standing out serenely on the horizon, with the island of Santo Stefano alongside it and Caprera behind it. Very close to the Palau coast, it almost seems as if you could get there with a short swim, like when, from the shore, you reach certain strips of land surrounded by water, where there is no one and you can just simply stop and breathe.

La Maddalena is a bit like that, an island where time could stop and life flow at a slower pace. Just twenty minutes by ferry and you disembark in a place that smacks of ancient times, where even the speech of the local people has a

n luogo dal fascino immutato, della natura ancora selvaggia e incontaminata, in cui i tramonti invadono l’intera isola e anche il viaggio in traghetto per raggiungerla diventa un sogno: è La Maddalena con il suo arcipelago, una costellazione di isolotti che nascondono spiagge incantate come la Spiaggia Rosa, protetta e sulla quale vige il divieto di avvicinamento per preservarne i preziosi ed unici granelli dal colore rosa appunto. La si ammira già dal porto di Palau. Si staglia all’orizzonte placida, con al suo fianco l’isola di Santo Stefano e alle sue spalle quella di Caprera; vicinissima alla costa palaese, sembra quasi di poterci arrivare con poche bracciate a nuoto, come quando dalla spiaggia si raggiungono certi lembi di terra circondati dall’acqua, in cui non c’è nessuno e ci si può mettere anche solo semplicemente a respirare. La Maddalena è un po’ così, un’isola nella quale il tempo potrebbe fermarsi e la vita scorrere con ritmi più lenti. Venti minuti appena di traversata con il traghetto e si sbarca in una realtà

different sound, a dialect in itself, the result of the mixture of many linguistic influences and even a little bit of America, which for decades had military bases here, now abandoned. The old town, a stone’s throw from the harbour where you disembark, is a maze of narrow streets overlooked by ancient buildings adorned with balconies and wrought iron railings. The Town Hall, with a large patio inside, is worth a visit, just as it is a must to go over to Caprera to admire the Garibaldi Compendium and its fortification.

Here the ‘Hero of Two Worlds’, Giuseppe Garibaldi spent the last years of his life and built the famous White House, now a museum house open to the public. Here you can also visit the tomb where the General, symbol of the Italian Risorgimento, rests. With its wide variety of restaurants offering dishes cooked with the fresh catch of the day, while you are in a Maddalena, you have to stop at least once in Cala Tegge where there is a small place favoured by the locals, and where you can eat fried calamari with an authentic flavour.

Il centro storico, a un passo dal porto in cui si sbarca, è un dedalo di viuzze strette in cui si affacciano palazzi antichi adornati da balconi e ringhiere in ferro battuto. Il palazzo del Municipio, con al suo interno un importante patio, merita di essere visitato, così come è d’obbligo raggiungere Caprera per ammirare il Compendio Garibaldino e la sua fortificazione. Qui ‘l’eroe dei due mondi’, Giuseppe Garibaldi trascorse gli ultimi anni della sua vita e vi costruì la famosa Casa bianca, oggi casa Museo aperta al pubblico.

E sempre qui è possibile visitare la tomba dove riposa il Generale, simbolo del Risorgimento Italiano.

Ricca di ristoranti che propongono piatti cucinati con il pescato fresco del giorno, a La Maddalena non si può non fare almeno una volta tappa a Cala Tegge dove si trova un piccolo ritrovo da veri maddalenini e in cui si può mangiare un fritto di calamari dal sapore autentico.

Guardians of the night THE GALLURA LIGHTHOUSES, SET IN UNIQUE LANDSCAPES

I FARI DELLA GALLURA, IMMERSI IN PAESAGGI UNICI

T

owers set among the rocks atop rugged cliffs, squat white buildings or colourful little lanterns, the lighthouses of northern Sardinia stand in solitary splendour in spectacular landscapes where nature remains undisturbed.

Like the one at Capo Testa, which watches over the granite crags of Moon Valley, or the one at Punta Palau, which shines its light over the transparent waters of a beach set among the untouched mediterranean scrubland. But best of all is Porto Cervo, where the Capo Ferro lighthouse reigns supreme. When darkness falls, the lights come on, showing the way for ships and small boats, just as they have since ancient times.

The Capo Ferro Lighthouse The lighthouse on the Capo Ferro promontory is one of the most popular sites among visitors to Porto Cervo, offering fabulous views of the sea, the rocks all around and the two signalling towers. Construction of the lighthouse began in 1858 and concluded in 1861. The building itself is a two-storey rectangular block, topped by a truncated cone-shaped tower that contains the lantern. Nowadays the two levels are home to the families of the two lighthouse keepers who still take care of the operation.

The lamp was electrified in 1938. With its blinking red light reaching eight nautical miles, the lighthouse is a guiding device equipped with a radio beacon. The area around Capo Ferro is characterised by a large number of inlets, small islands and shallows, making this one of the most difficult stretches of coastline to navigate; so much so that the seabed is littered with the wrecks of vessels that have sunk in the course of history.

The Capo Testa Lighthouse Another equally famous lighthouse is the one at Capo Testa, in the vicinity of Santa Teresa di Gallura on the northern tip of Sardinia. It was inaugurated in 1845 and can be seen clearly from the Maddalena Archipelago and the island of Corsica. Built in the 19th century, the Capo Testa Lighthouse is 23 metres tall and white-painted; the rectangular two-storey building is topped by the lantern tower. Not far away is the old lighthouse, now

abandoned and not accessible to the public. From it there are extraordinary views of the Strait of Bonifacio and the Capo Testa promontory, even more spectacular at sunset.

This is an obligatory visit for fans of lighthouses, which have captivated us all with their romantic, yet melancholy atmosphere since the dawn of time.

Punta Palau, Punta Sardegna and Capo d’Orso Lighthouses Still in the north of the island, in the Palau region we can admire the lighthouses of Punta Palau, Punta Sardegna and Capo d’Orso. Three very different structures that add even more charm to an area already steeped in history and packed with natural wonders. The beach of Porto Faro

orri incastonate nella pietra, che sovrastano scogliere, edifici bianchi e squadrati o piccoli fanali colorati, i fari del Nord Sardegna, solitari, immersi in paesaggi unici in cui la natura domina indisturbata. Come il faro di Capo Testa, che sorveglia i costoni granitici della Valle della Luna o quello di Punta Palau, che proietta le sue luci sulle acque trasparenti di una spiaggia circondata dalla macchia mediterranea. Ma soprattutto Porto Cervo, dove domina il Faro di Capo Ferro.

Quando cala l’oscurità, le luci si accendono, come quando in tempi più antichi indicavano la via a navi e piccole imbarcazioni.

Il faro di Capo Ferro Il faro e il fanale del promontorio di Capo Ferro sono uno dei luoghi più visitati di Porto Cervo per

ammirare il mare, le scogliere e le due strutture di segnalazione.

La costruzione del faro cominciò nel 1858 e i lavori terminarono nel 1861. La struttura si presenta come un corpo rettangolare a due piani, sormontato dalla torre troncoconica che ospita la lanterna.

Oggi i due piani dell’edificio ospitano le famiglie dei due faristi che ancora oggi provvedono al funzionamento del Faro. L’elettrificazione dell’occhio avvenne nel 1938. Con la sua luce a intermittenza rossa della portata di 8 miglia nautiche, costituisce un faro d’atterraggio dotato di radiofaro. La zona di Capo Ferro si caratterizza per una grande quantità di insenature, piccole isole e secche.

Queste lo rendono uno dei tratti di costa di più difficile navigazione, tanto che i fondali sono punteggiati di relitti di imbarcazioni affondate nel corso della storia.

Il faro di Capo Testa Celebre è anche il faro di Capo Testa, nel territorio di Santa Teresa di Gallura, nell’estremo nord della Sardegna, inaugurato nel 1845 e ben visibile dall’arcipelago della Maddalena e dalla Corsica. Costruito nell’Ottocento, il faro di Capo Testa, con la sua altezza di 23 metri e la sua facciata bianca, è un edificio a pianta rettangolare a due piani, sormontato dalla torre della lanterna. Poco distante, si trova anche il vecchio faro, in disuso e non aperto al pubblico. Da qui, è possibile ammirare incantevoli scorci panoramici sulle Bocche di Bonifacio e sull’area del promontorio di Capo Testa, resi ancora più suggestivi dalla luce del tramonto.

Una tappa imperdibile per gli amanti dei fari, che da sempre conquistano con la loro atmosfera romantica e, al contempo, malinconica.

I fari di Punta Palau, Punta Sardegna e Capo D’Orso Sempre nel nord dell’isola, a Palau, si possono poi ammirare il faro di Punta Palau, il faro di Punta Sardegna e il faro di Capo d’Orso.

Tre strutture diverse tra loro che contribuiscono a rendere ancora più bello un territorio già ricco di storia e capolavori della natura. La spiaggia di Porto Faro è una delle spiagge più caratteristiche del nord Sardegna, il cui nome deriva dal suo faro bianco, che con la sua punta dipinta di verde domina una piccola insenatura intagliata nella località Punta Palau. Un gioiello incastonato nel cuore di Palau, da cui si apre

is one of the most distinctive in northern Sardinia; it’s named after its green-topped white lighthouse, which overlooks a small bay carved out of Punta Palau. This gem set in the very heart of the Palau area offers stunning views of the entire Archipelago di La Maddalena National Park. Then there’s the Punta Sardegna Lighthouse, built in 1913 and consisting of a quadrangular granite tower 15 metres tall, with balcony and lantern on top of a two-storey keeper’s house. The building and the lamp have been automated since the departure of the last keeper in 1975. In 1995 the site was given by the Italian Navy in perpetual concession to the University of Trieste, which had requested it as the headquarters of its Coastal and Marine Geomorphology Group.

The Capo d’Orso Lighthouse was built by the Italian Navy in 1924 and subsequently abandoned in 2000. The main building features a rectangular floor plan on two levels: the ground floor has a surface area of 139 square metres and was originally the home of the lighthouse keeper and his family; the first floor provided accommodation for support staff. Access to the structure is via a side entrance, leading to a staircase and a storage room. Outside is a large terrace perched above the sea, giving access to the service pier and the signalling lantern, 10 metres tall and standing next to the original building. The lighthouse can be reached by land via a narrow path from the 18th-century fortress above; or by sea, thanks to the convenient mooring place a few metres from the building.

C’è poi il faro di Punta Sardegna, costruito nel 1913, composto da una torre quadrangolare in granito, alta 15 metri, con balcone e lanterna in cima ad una casa del custode a due piani. L’edificio e la torre sono automatizzati da quando l’ultimo guardiano ne ha lasciato la custodia nel 1975. Nel 1995 la struttura venne affidata dalla Marina militare italiana in concessione perpetua e gratuita all’Università di Trieste, che ne aveva fatto richiesta come sede del Gruppo di Geomorfologia Costiera e Marina.

Il faro di Capo d’Orso fu costruito dalla Marina militare nel 1924 e dismesso nel 2000. L’edificio principale presenta un impianto planimetrico regolare di forma rettangolare, articolato su due piani: la costruzione al piano

terra ha una superficie coperta di 139 metri quadri e ospitava l’ex alloggio del fanalista e la sua famiglia, mentre al primo piano si trovava l’alloggio per il personale di supporto. L’accesso al fabbricato è garantito da un ingresso laterale, cui si accede tramite una rampa di scale esterne che conducono ad un ambiente centrale su cui si affaccia il vano scala ed un locale adibito a deposito. All’esterno si trova un’ampia terrazza a picco sul mare, da cui si raggiunge il molo di servizio, e la struttura di segnalamento, costituita da una torre circolare bianca, alta 10 metri, situata in prossimità del vecchio fabbricato. Il faro è raggiungibile via terra attraverso uno stretto sentiero, che parte dalla batteria ottocentesca situata a monte, ma anche via mare grazie a un comodo ormeggio a pochi metri dall’immobile.

oberto Ragnedda is the mayor of Arzachena, but more than anything else he’s the son of a place with a unique identity and stunning natural beauty. He told us about three places that are particularly dear to his heart and his memories, places that have a special significance for him, and whose past and present should be carefully preserved; with the inevitable connection to his own leading role in their administration.

“Piazza Risorgimento and the beaches of Capriccioli and Pevero are places with deep links to my childhood and my youth, and they top the list of my favourite places in Arzachena. It’s a difficult choice to make, among so much beauty and the countless memories I have in this land, so blessed in terms of nature, history and economy, which I have the honour of serving”.

THE HEART OF THE TOWN “In the heart of the historic town centre, until thirty years ago Piazza Risorgimento was the main focal point for the local residents. They came here in the evenings to walk about, meet their friends, celebrate holidays or enjoy summer events”, the mayor recalls. “Without social media, this square was the place where everything happened.

Today, societal and economic changes and new behaviours have overturned all that and distanced people from the old neighbourhoods; it’s a phenomenon that has affected all towns indiscriminately. And for that reason, over the past six years or so, the local council has been implementing a strategic plan to relaunch the historic town centre. We’ve refurbished the paving and the fountain in the square and invested in new street furniture, as well as installing various urban artworks such

Ci ha indicato i suoi tre luoghi del cuore e della memoria, che per lui rappresentano qualcosa di speciale e da conservare con cura tra ricordi e presente, legato inevitabilmente alla propria attività amministrativa.

“Piazza Risorgimento, le spiagge di Capriccioli e quelle del Pevero sono i luoghi legati all’infanzia e alla gioventù che metto in cima alla lista tra i posti del cuore della mia Arzachena. Difficile scegliere tra tanta bellezza e tanti ricordi, che ritrovo in ogni angolo di questo territorio baciato dalla fortuna dal punto di vista naturalistico, storico ed economico, e che ho il privilegio di amministrare”.

IL CUORE DEL PAESE “Nel cuore del centro storico cittadino, piazza Risorgimento è stata fino a 30 anni fa il punto di riferimento per gli arzachenesi. Qui trascorrevamo le serate a passeggiare, incontrare gli amici, celebrare le festività o divertirci con gli spettacoli estivi - ricorda il sindaco -.

Senza i social media, era questa piazza il luogo in cui accadeva “tutto”. Fattori sociali, economici e comportamentali hanno invertito la tendenza e allontanato dai vecchi quartieri la popolazione: un fenomeno che ha colpito indistintamente tutte le città. Per questo, da circa sei anni, l’amministrazione comunale porta avanti un piano strategico di rilancio del centro storico. Abbiamo previsto la riqualificazione della pavimentazione e della fontana, l’acquisto di nuovi arredi e di palazzi storici da riconvertire e valorizzare, l’organizzazione di mercatini serali e di numerosi eventi, oltre che l’installazione di

SUNDAYS ON THE BEACH “For me, the beaches where I spent my childhood summers are equally close to my heart. It was a tradition to get together every Sunday with family and friends at Grande and Piccolo Pevero, or on the beaches of the Capriccioli headland”, Roberto Ragnedda tell us. “Particularly in the latter area, we’re seeing extreme coastal erosion, to the point where the local council has decided to create a special nature reserve to protect the fragile dune systems and the surrounding juniper groves. The natural environment is the true

wealth of our area, and it’s our duty to take concrete action to safeguard it, as well as raising awareness and educating the population to respect its natural balance. For example, last year saw the completion of the first wooden walkway; we’ll soon be installing foot showers on the beaches, and summer 2024 will see the launch of a new project to protect the dunes, funded by the One Ocean Foundation and sponsored by the Town Hall. We’ll be installing a footpath with wooden posts, natural rope and signage to mark the access to Capriccioli Ovest. This will protect the area behind the beach and inform the public of the basic rules for sustainable enjoyment of our beaches. In the future, we’ll be extending similar projects to other beaches on the Arzachena coastline, accompanied by appropriate information campaigns”.

LE DOMENICHE IN SPIAGGIA “Altrettanto care sono per me le spiagge dove ho trascorso le estati da bambino. Era una tradizione riunirci tutte le domeniche con la famiglia e gli amici al Grande e al Piccolo Pevero, oppure in quelle del promontorio di Capriccioli - racconta Roberto Ragnedda -. In quest’ultimo, in particolare, assistiamo a un pesante fenomeno di erosione costiera, tanto da aver indotto l’amministrazione comunale a progettare la realizzazione di un parco a tutela dei fragili arenili e dei boschetti di ginepro circostanti. La vera ricchezza della nostra

destinazione è proprio il patrimonio naturalistico ed è nostro dovere intraprendere azioni concrete per tutelarlo, oltre che sensibilizzare la popolazione a rispettarne gli equilibri. Ad esempio, lo scorso anno è stata completata una prima passerella in legno, saranno presto installate le doccette lava piedi e, entro l’estate 2024, verrà avviato un ulteriore progetto a salvaguardia delle dune finanziato dalla Fondazione One Ocean con il patrocinio del Comune. Allestiremo un percorso con paletti in legno, corde naturali e cartellonistica per delimitare l’accesso a Capriccioli Ovest. Servirà a proteggere il retrospiaggia e a divulgare tra i bagnanti le regole basilari per una fruizione sostenibile dei nostri lidi. In futuro, estenderemo iniziative simili anche ad altri litorali di Arzachena, accompagnate da adeguate campagne di comunicazione”.

T

he 2024 summer season in Porto Cervo offers a packed calendar of events, including numerous shows, literary encounters, concerts and themed evenings. From 3 August to 8 September, Piazza del Principe in Porto Cervo hosts the art exhibition Colours of the Soul, the first phase of a new project curated by LamaroArte.

On 11 August, the Abbiadori sports stadium presents Radio 105 In the City, featuring The Kolors. There’s more music with Noemi, who will perform in the Piazzetta of Porto Cervo on 31 July, and Nomadi, with another concert in the Piazzetta on 27 August. Traditional annual events organised by the Costa Smeralda Consortium include the moving Concerto all’alba, which takes place on 3 August, at 5:30 a.m. on Capriccioli beach. Porto Cervo is also the venue for a summer of literature, with Tiziana Rocca on 12 August and Ernesto Maria Ruffini on 30 August starring in the Porto Cervo Libri festival. Stunning staging and special effects on 13 August with Mariah Carey, who will perform at the Gala Night at Hotel Cala di Volpe.

On 22 August the Piazzetta in Porto Cervo will fill with the island’s traditional colours and flavours for the Gran Gala della Sardegna. Piazza di Cannigione hosts the Liberamente Sopra le Righe literary event, with guests including Daniele Bossari on 30 July and the actress and writer Francesca Reggiani on 11 August.

On 2 September Piazzetta della Marina in Porto Cervo is the setting for the third edition of Longevity Fest, conceived and produced by film director Pietro Mereu and Ilex Productions, with a talk exploring the topic of longevity.

And last but not least, the four concerts of the Classical Music Festival at the Conference Centre in Porto Cervo from 7 to 13 September.

eside the stunning olympicsize pool at Hotel Cala di Volpe and cooled by the fresh summer breeze, an atmosphere reminiscent of One Thousand and One Nights sets the scene for Porto Cervo’s most exclusive gala dinners, universally acclaimed for their spectacular staging, exquisite menus to please even the most exacting diners and extraordinary performances by international music stars. Lightweight linen drapes float in the breeze and a multitude of lanterns join the twinkling of the stars, creating a marvellous impression of continuity between earth and the night sky.

And it’s right here that the magic happens. The event is based on the collaboration with Una Scuola Sarda and highlights the most significant aspects of Sardinia’s cultural and traditional heritage with music, entertainment and participation.

The Manna di Gaddura Festival, which is held in September in Luogosanto, is Gallura’s most important event. The cult of the Virgin of Locusantu - after which the church founded in 1218 by the first Franciscan friars who arrived in Sardinia from a pilgrimage to the Holy Land was named - is deeply rooted and popular.

Since 1954, the year in which the Basilica’s Virgin was crowned Queen of Gallura, the Sanctuary has become a very popular place of worship for the locals, in particular, during the rituals and feasts of September 8.

La Festa Manna di Gaddura, che si svolge a settembre a Luogosanto è la sagra più importante della Gallura. Qui il culto di Nostra Signóra di Locusantu - titolare dell’omonima chiesa fondata nel 1218 dai primi frati francescani, giunti in Sardegna dopo un viaggio in Terra Santa - è radicato e popolare.

Dal 1954, anno in cui la titolare della basilica è stata incoronata Regina di Gallura, il santuario ha consolidato il suo ruolo di luogo di culto più popolare per i galluresi, in particolare durante i riti e le festività dell’8 settembre.

n keeping with tradition, the summer season at Porto Cervo concludes with the Costa Smeralda Classical Music Festival in September.

The 2024 edition features four extraordinary concerts.

The opening event takes place on 7 September and stars the Cagliari-born violinist Anna Tifu.

She will be accompanied by the Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra of Venice and its exceptional soloists, led by concertmaster Guglielmo De Stasio. Anna Tifu is considered one of the top international violinists of her generation. The evening of 9 September is dedicated to the Great Performers of Music History. This year’s edition presents the acclaimed Canadian pianist Louis Lortie, with a programme of music

by Schubert and Mozart. The concert on 11 September once again focuses on emerging new talent, and features the young Italian pianist Luigi Carroccia, who will perform Beethoven’s Concerto No. 3 for Piano and Orchestra, again accompanied by the Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra. Described by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram as an aristocrat of the piano, Luigi Carroccia has won numerous prizes in national and international competitions.

The fourth and final concert on 13 September sees the return of the extraordinary cellist Mischa Maisky. Following his enormously successful 2023 tour with the Antonio Vivaldi Orchestra of Venice, the soloist presents a brandnew programme with the string ensemble that will accompany his performance.

Artistic direction is by Maestro Guglielmo De Stasio, joint founder and organiser of the Festival, with the support of the Costa Smeralda Consortium of Porto Cervo. Concerts will take place in the Conference Centre of the Cervo Hotel in Porto Cervo, and all events will start at 21:30.

ome da tradizione la stagione estiva di Porto Cervo si conclude con il Classical Music Festival Costa Smeralda, in scena a settembre.

L’edizione 2024 è scandita da quattro appuntamenti.

L’apertura è stabilita per il 7 settembre 2024 e affidata alla violinista Cagliaritana Anna Tifu accompagnata dall’Orchestra Antonio Vivaldi di Venezia con i suoi solisti di eccezione, guidata dal Konzertmeister Guglielmo De Stasio. Anna Tifu è una violinista considerata tra le migliori interpreti di livello internazionale della sua generazione. La serata del 9 settembre 2024, invece è dedicata ai Grandi Interpreti della Storia della Musica.

Questa edizione ospita il celebre pianista canadese Louis Lortie. Il programma prevede Musiche di Schubert e Mozart. L’11 settembre 2024 è ancora dedicato ai giovani talenti in ascesa, e vede esibirsi il giovane pianista italiano Luigi Carroccia, la quale eseguirà il Terzo Concerto per pianoforte e orchestra di L. van Beethoven, accompagnata sempre dall’Orchestra Antonio Vivaldi. La quarta e conclusiva serata 13 settembre prevede il ritorno del grande violoncellista Mischa Maisky.

Dopo il grande successo ottenuto nel tour 2023 con l’orchestra A. Vivaldi di Venezia il solista presenta un nuovo programma con il gruppo d’archi che lo accompagna nella serata. or the Ogliastra’s locals, those who are called ‘centenarians’ are their uncles and aunts, grandmothers and grandfathers, the people whom, in the world’s most famous Blue Zone, they have always known. In a world where everything tends to be standardized and uniformed, it is nice to be able to tell stories with faces and voices that help to better understand a phenomenon.

This is the concept on which the origin of the Longevity Fest is based, an event devoted to exploring the secrets of longevity, a term that has been very abused in the past twenty years, and is very trendy right now. In 2015, owing to the funds for the Expo, the documentary film The Centenarians’ Club was shot and, since 2017, it has been taking part in various festivals, meeting with great success and being awarded several prizes. In 2021, an event was held in Milan called Ogliastra: The Island of Longevity, with the contribution of some

Nel 2021, è stata organizzata una serata a Milano dal titolo Ogliastra: Isola della Longevità, con il contributo di alcuni comuni dell’Ogliastra, la Sardegna Film Commission e Scalo Lambrate, locale

Ogliastra towns, the Sardegna Film Commission and Scalo Lambrate, a club founded by Fabio Lucarelli. In 2022, because of the event’s great success, the Longevity Fest was established, an event that better describes the secrets of longevity in a worldwide perspective. Last year, there was a twinning of Sardinia and Japan, and this year the special guest is Costa Rica, starring scientists and personalities who have an in-depth knowledge of the matter and of the reasons of longevity. The news of 2024 is that the event doubles, from one to two, with very important guests.

Of course, inviting such prestigious guests involves several complications, but the event promises to be unforgettable. Partners of the event are Consorzio Costa Smeralda, CIPNES and Smeralda Holding again.

We will be waiting for you on September 2 and 3 in Porto Cervo to celebrate longevity and explore the secrets behind a long and happy life.

Visto il grande successo di questo evento, dal 2022 è nato il Longevity Fest, un appuntamento che racconta meglio quali siano i segreti della longevità con una prospettiva mondiale. Lo scorso anno è stato sancito un gemellaggio tra Sardegna e Giappone, e quest’anno sarà ospite il Costa Rica, con scienziati e personalità che conoscono a fondo gli argomenti e le ragioni della longevità. La novità del 2024 è che l’appuntamento raddoppia, da una a due serate,con ospiti molto importanti. Ovviamente, portare simili personalità comporta relative complicazioni, ma sarà un evento indimenticabile. I partner dell’evento saranno ancora una volta il Consorzio Costa Smeralda, il CIPNES e Smeralda Holding.

he sporting legacy of the yacht Azzurra can these days be found in Young Azzurra, the programme in which the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda supports talented young sportspeople like Cesare Barabino from Olbia, aged 22 and a sailor in the Olympic ILCA 7 class, (better known as Laser, the most widespread in the world), Cagliari-born Federico Alan Pilloni, just 18 years old and an excellent athlete in IQFoil windsurfing (an Olympic event, from this year’s Paris Games) and Maddalena Spanu, also aged 18 and from Oristano, the current Wingfoil word champion.

Federico, how does it feel to see your speciality, IQFoil, becoming an Olympic event for the first time?

It’s really exciting, because it’s the second-largest Olympic class in terms of practising athletes.

It’s a discipline that will bring some great action to the Paris Olympics.

Which was the most important regatta of your life?

Youth Sailing World Championship 2024, the third most important in Olympic sailing, after the Olympics and Worlds. It recently ended on Lake Garda, where I earned the title of world champion in the U19 category. I’d already taken part in the competition in Oman in 2021, where I won a gold medal for Italy for the first time.

What’s your ideal regatta venue in Sardinia?

Definitely Golfo degli Angeli in southern Sardinia, close to my home and the Arcipelago di La Maddalena Your favourite place on the Costa Smeralda?

The Capo Ferro lighthouse, which is particularly spectacular in bad weather.

Maddalena, how did you get started in Wingfoil?

It was thanks to my dad, who got me to try it one day for a laugh.

Federico, cosa provi nel vedere che la tua specialità, l’IQFoil, è diventata per la prima volta Classe Olimpica? É un’emozione forte, anche perché è la seconda Classe Olimpica per numero di atleti praticanti. Sarà una disciplina che darà tanto spettacolo alle Olimpiadi di Parigi.

La regata più importante della tua vita?

La Youth Sailing World Championship 2024, la terza più importante della vela olimpica, dopo le Olimpiadi e i Mondiali. Si è conclusa da poco sul Lago di Garda, dove ho guadagnato il titolo di campione del mondo nella categoria U19.

Ho già partecipato a questa competizione nel 2021 in Oman dove ho vinto per la prima volta la medaglia d’oro per l’Italia.

Campo di regata ideale in Sardegna?

Sicuramente il golfo degli Angeli nel Sud Sardegna, vicino casa e l’Arcipelago di La Maddalena Il tuo angolo preferito in Costa Smeralda?

Il Faro di Capo Ferro, particolarmente spettacolare durante condizioni meteo impegnative.

Maddalena, come sei arrivata al Wing Foil?

Grazie a mio padre che un giorno mi fece provare per gioco.

Your dream on the back burner?

To win at the Olympics one day, in the hope that Wingfoil will soon be recognised as an Olympic event. But I also dream of clocking up a record number of wins in the Wingfoil World Championships.

What’s your ideal regatta venue in Sardinia?

Cagliari, second only to the Costa Smeralda.

Your favourite place on the Costa Smeralda?

Isola dei Monaci in the Maddalena Archipelago. It’s amazing to watch the regattas from that idyllic spot.

Cesare, how did you get into ILCA? I started sailing in 2008 with Optimist, a small boat that’s

excellent for children to learn in. Later, partly to follow in the footsteps of my sister who sailed in ILCA 4, and partly because I liked sailing solo, I chose ILCA. Your most important regatta?

For me, the U21 European Championship in France in 2022 was really special, and I won the silver medal.

Your sporting dream?

To win the ILCA 7 World Championships and gold at the Olympics.

What’s your ideal regatta venue in Sardinia?

As I’m a fan of strong wind, I think the most challenging place is in front of Santa Teresa di Gallura, in the Strait of Bonifacio.

Your favourite place on the Costa Smeralda?

Yacht Club Costa Smeralda: it’s in a unique location in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

Cesare, come sei arrivato all’Ilca?

Mi sono avvicinato alla vela nel 2008 con l’Optimist, piccola

barca, ottima per imparare quando si è piccoli. Poi, un po’ per seguire le orme di mia sorella maggiore che regatava nell’Ilca 4, un po’ perché mi piaceva navigare da solo, ho scelto la Classe Ilca.

La tua regata più importante?

Quella che occupa un posto speciale è il Campionato Europeo U21 in Francia, nel 2022, dove ho conquistato l’argento.

Il tuo sogno sportivo?

Vincere il Mondiale assoluto ILCA 7 e l’oro alle Olimpiadi.

Il campo di regata ideale?

Da amante del vento forte penso che il più sfidante sia di fronte a Santa Teresa di Gallura, tra le Bocche di Bonifacio.

LA NOSTRA INTERVISTA A RICCARDO BONADEO, PRESIDENTE DI ONE OCEAN FOUNDATION

T

ry to imagine the beauty and richness of a planet bathed everywhere by clear, clean waters. A thought certainly stimulated by the wonder of the sea that laps the northern coast of Sardinia. It is no coincidence that One Ocean Foundation was set up by the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda.

Riccardo Bonadeo, president of the Foundation and for many years Commodore of Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, tells us more about this important organization committed to protecting the ocean.

How did the idea of setting up One Ocean Foundation come about?

The idea came about following the great success of an international Forum on the theme of protecting the sea and our ties with it, which we organized in Milan on the occasion of the Yacht Club Costa Smeralda’s 50th anniversary in 2017.

What are the Foundation’s main areas of activity?

The Foundation’s activity is divided into three main lines.

The first is that of awareness and education, through activities and events, such as the Young Summit and One Ocean Week Milan. Then there are environmental initiatives, such as research in the Caprera canyon (from this year the second Hope Spot in Italy recognized by Mission Blue), No Plastic in the Ocean and Blue Forest, a big international project dedicated to the protection of marine forests, one of our flagship activities thanks to which we have already restored 400 m2 of marine forests in Liguria, and planted over 10,000 cuttings of Posidonia Oceanica, a plant with extraordinary environmental value. The third strand is Blue Economy, to which projects such as the Ocean Disclosure Initiative are linked, the first system of guidelines to support companies in becoming aware of the pressure exerted by industry on marine ecosystems.

‘WHAT IS NOT GIVEN ENOUGH CONSIDERATION IS THAT TAKING CARE OF THE HEALTH OF OUR ECOSYSTEM IS FUNDAMENTAL FROM AN ENVIRONMENTAL, BUT ALSO SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC POINT OF VIEW’ committee we created the Charta Smeralda, a guide with ‘the 10 Commandments’, which include minimizing the use of natural resources and drinking water when not strictly necessary, encouraging recycling and separate waste collection, and putting suggested good practices in place to minimize sources of pollution, starting with boat maintenance and cleaning.

What world awaits us if we start taking care of it?

Come è nata la volontà di dar vita a One Ocean Foundation?

L’idea è nata in seguito al grande successo ottenuto da un Forum internazionale sul tema della tutela del mare e del nostro legame con esso, che organizzammo a Milano in occasione del 50° anniversario dello Yacht Club Costa Smeralda, nel 2017.

Quali sono gli strumenti principali della Fondazione?

L’attività della Fondazione si articola su tre principali filoni.

Il primo filone è quello della consapevolezza e dell’educazione, attraverso attività ed eventi, come il Summit Young e la One Ocean Week Milano. Poi ci sono le iniziative di carattere ambientale, come le ricerche nel canyon di Caprera (da quest’anno il secondo Hope Spot riconosciuto da Mission Blue in Italia), No Plastic in the Ocean e Blue Forest, un grande progetto internazionale dedicato alla tutela delle foreste marine, una delle nostre attività di punta grazie alla quale in Liguria abbiamo già ripristinato 400 m2 di foreste marine e piantumato oltre 10.000 talee di Posidonia oceanica, una pianta dallo straordinario valore ambientale. Il terzo filone è rappresentato dalla blue economy, a cui si legano progetti come l’Ocean Disclosure Initiative, il primo sistema di linee guida per supportare le imprese nel prendere coscienza delle loro pressioni sugli ecosistemi marini.

Piccole ma importanti attenzioni alla portata di tutti?

Insieme al nostro comitato scientifico abbiamo creato la Charta Smeralda, una guida con ‘i 10 comandamenti’, che includono il minimizzare l’uso di risorse naturali e dell’acqua potabile quando non strettamente necessario, favorire il riciclo e la raccolta differenziata, e mettere in atto le buone pratiche suggerite per ridurre al minimo le fonti di inquinamento, a partire dalla manutenzione e pulizia della barca.

Che mondo ci aspetta se cominciamo a prendercene cura?

The Foundation’s objective is to refute this doom and gloom prediction, and to do so it is necessary to explain the interdependence between human life and that of the ocean. What is not given enough consideration is that taking care of the health of our ecosystem is fundamental from an environmental, but also social and economic point of view, if we consider how natural resources are very important for the development of many businesses.

An important memory of yours related to the sea?

When returning in extremely difficult conditions from the famous Fastnet Race in 1979, where I competed aboard one of the three Italian yachts taking part, I came across an enormous mass of clotted plastic. It was the event that perhaps more than any other marked the beginning of my commitment to protecting the sea.

Salgado, che ha documentato la bellezza ma anche il degrado del nostro pianeta, sostiene che l’umanità ha raggiunto una soglia di non ritorno. L’obiettivo della Fondazione è confutare questa profezia nefasta e per farlo occorre spiegare l’interdipendenza tra la vita umana a quella dell’oceano.

Quello che non si considera abbastanza è che occuparsi della salute del nostro ecosistema è fondamentale dal punto di vista ambientale, ma anche sociale ed economico, se si pensa quanto le risorse naturali siano importantissime per lo sviluppo di molte imprese.

Un suo importante ricordo legato al mare?

Quando rientrando in condizioni estremamente difficili dalla famosa regata Fastnet nel 1979, dove gareggiavo a bordo di una delle tre barche italiane presenti, ci imbattemmo in un’enorme massa di plastica raggrumata. È stato l’evento che forse più di tutti ha segnato l’inizio del mio impegno per la protezione del mare.

WHEN THE BEACH UMBRELLAS CLOSE, THERE IS A PART OF THE ISLAND TO DISCOVER

When the beach umbrellas close and towels give way to jackets and sweaters, there is a part of the island to discover with the wind in your face. It’s the northeastern coast, to be tackled

by Enduro motorbike or in a 4x4, alone or with an expert guide for an excursion, perhaps in a group.

Paths and dirt roads that skirt the coast but also climb towards the tops of the more inland areas, all with absolute respect for the environment and the places.

Acting as an expert guide and advisor is Alessandro Marzi, an architect with a degree in territorial, urban and environmental planning but also a passionate biker, to the point of having transformed his love for two wheels and off-roading

È la costa nord–orientale quella da aff rontare con una moto Enduro o con un fuoristrada a quattro ruote, da soli o con una guida esperta per un’escursione magari in gruppo. Sentieri e strade bianche che lambiscono la costa ma anche ascese verso le sommità delle zone più interne, tutto nell’assoluto rispetto dell’ambiente e dei luoghi. A fare da guida e consigliere esperto è Alessandro Marzi, architetto laureato in pianificazione territoriale, urbanistica ed ambientale ma anche appassionato centauro, al punto da aver trasformato

“The best, most scenic routes to enjoy the area around Porto Cervo by Enduro bike - he says - are those on the old paths f rom early last century. Some run along the coast and are the old routes used to bring water to the towns after the first urbanization. Off-road vehicles, on the other hand, need larger spaces and so one of the best destinations is inland, f rom San Pantaleo towards Monte Pino, in an area where there are granite quarries and country churches.

Or towards Mount Limbara, the second highest mountain on the island, to admire the landscape and Corsica on the horizon”.

All non-summer destinations, because with

high temperatures and the risk of fires, the forests must be protected.

“We collaborate with the Forestry Corps - explains Marzi, who also has a partnership with a motorbike rental company - and we avoid excursions f rom midJune to mid-September.

Fire answers to no-one, and we would be very vulnerable on the trails.

Furthermore, the dust raised by motorbikes could be mistaken at a distance for smoke and cause alarms.

Shorelines and beaches are also off limits. But in the summer, at certain times of the evening, we can go on simpler outings in the countryside to reach some farmhouse or go to more mountainous areas, reachable only by motorbike, to visit shepherd f riends to discover their life in the sheepfolds and eat ultra-zero kilometre products.

“Con l’Enduro - dice - i percorsi migliori e più scenografici per godersi i dintorni di Porto Cervo sono quelli sugli antichi sentieri di inizio del secolo scorso.

Alcuni corrono lungo la costa e sono le antiche vie usate per portare l’acqua nei centri dopo la prima urbanizzazione. I fuoristrada invece hanno bisogno di spazi più larghi ed allora una delle mete migliori è nell’entroterra, da San Pantaleo verso Monte Pino, in un comprensorio dove si trovano cave di granito e chiese campestri. O verso monte Limbara, la seconda montagna più alta dell’isola, per ammirare il paesaggio e, all’orizzonte, la Corsica”.

Tutte mete non estive,

perché con le alte temperature e il rischio incendi le foreste vanno preservate: “Collaboriamo con il Corpo Forestale spiega Marzi, che ha anche una partnership con una società per il noleggio delle moto - e da metà giugno a metà settembre evitiamo escursioni.

L’incendio non guarda in faccia nessuno e sui sentieri saremmo molto vulnerabili; in più la polvere sollevata dalle moto a distanza potrebbe essere scambiata per fumo e provocare allarmi. Off limits anche arenili e spiagge. Ma d’estate, in certi orari della sera, possiamo fare uscite più semplici in campagna per raggiungere qualche agriturismo o andare in zone più montane, raggiungibili solo in moto, da amici pastori per scoprire la loro vita negli ovili e mangiare prodotti a km ultra-zero”.

Colours of the Soul AN EXHIBITION OF PAINTING AND SCULPTURE AT LA PIAZZA DEL PRINCIPE UNA MOSTRA DI PITTURA E SCULTURA A LA PIAZZA DEL PRINCIPE

rom 3 August to 8 September, La Piazza del Principe in Porto Cervo hosts the exhibition Colours of the Soul, the first phase of a project curated by LamaroArte which promises to become a summer landmark for the visual arts, with the aim of attracting a broad swathe of art lovers, but also people who simply love beautiful things.

The exhibition takes place in one of Porto Cervo’s most picturesque places, La Piazza del Principe, itself reminiscent of a painting in which nature is shaped by the genius of architect Jean Claude Lesuisse. The event is designed to be a showcase for new trends in contemporary art, with a particular focus on its relationship with the local area. Artists chosen for this first edition are of varied

origins and backgrounds, but linked by their shared goal of conveying their world view through colour. Indeed, the title Colours of the Soul arises f rom the desire to present each artist through the colours that lie in their soul and which, in their own unique way, represent their stylistic identity. The special participation of the master of contemporary sculpture Giuseppe Carta adds the stamp of prestige to this first edition of the annual event.

Alessandro De Gasperi, a young artist in love with Sardinia, tells us about the project and the show.

What’s the deeper meaning of colour in your work?

For me it all starts with the image of the thing I want to paint, and once I’ve sketched it out on wood – the medium I use for painting – and given it the first coat of oil paint, it

La mostra, ospitata in uno dei luoghi più pittoreschi di Porto Cervo, La Piazza del Principe, quasi un dipinto dove la natura è stata plasmata dalla genialità dell’architetto Jean Claude Lesuisse, è stata concepita come vetrina sulle nuove tendenze dell’arte contemporanea, con un’attenzione particolare al rapporto con il territorio.

Per questa prima edizione sono stati scelti artisti di estrazione e provenienza

diversi, accomunati dal proposito di comunicare il proprio mondo attraverso il colore. Il titolo Colours of Soul nasce infatti dal desiderio di raccontare ognuno di questi artisti mediante i colori che albergano nei loro animi e che, nei modi più singolari, rappresentano la cifra stilistica di ognuno di essi. La partecipazione speciale di Giuseppe Carta, maestro della scultura contemporanea, è il sigillo di prestigio a questa prima edizione.

comes naturally to me to give the piece an ultra-saturated spectrum of vibrant artificial colours. Painting’s a place of f reedom, where images are justified only by their own selves and the visual balance they create.

How do you hit the spot with audiences who are on holiday and not particularly passionate about art?

Holidaymakers want to see positive messages, lightheartedness and colour.

My works, like those of the other artists taking part in the show, are eye-catching and open to multiple interpretations, with an easy stylistic language that can grab the attention of anyone, even if they don’t have specific knowledge of art; but they conceal the complex story of the artist and the message, and can be more fully explored and discovered by those with the desire and the curiosity to look deeper.

Il pubblico in vacanza ha voglia di messaggi positivi, del colore, della spensieratezza.

Le mie opere, come quelle degli altri artisti partecipanti, sono accattivanti, e si presentano a più letture, con una facilità di linguaggio che può catturare l’attenzione di tutti, anche chi non ha una preparazione specifica, ma che nascondono la storia complessa dell’artista, il suo messaggio, per chi ha la volontà e la curiosità di approfondirla.

hat aspects do Madonna di Campiglio and the Costa Smeralda have in common?

One has the most fascinating mountain, the other the most exclusive beaches? Both belong to the Altagamma Foundation of which Madonna di Campiglio has been part since 2022, of course, but that’s not all. Connecting the Dolomite peaks which rose from the sea, and the emerald waters with their white beaches, is a mutual passion for high quality tourism and a love for beauty, be it that of the natural landscape or of outstanding hospitality. Madonna di Campiglio is located in western Trentino surrounded, to the east, by the Brenta Dolomites - a World Heritage Site and, to the west, by the glittering Adamello and Presanella glaciers. Everything started in Porto Cervo, is that right?

That’s right, the project was born one summer in a café in Porto Cervo. I was working at Teknowool; Gabriele Sanna had over 10 years’ experience in nanotechnology, and we joined forces to create something innovative and new. +Nano is a leading company in the nanotechnology sector. What are its spheres of operation? +Nano protects and preserves surfaces in a number of sectors: housing, hospitality, yachting,

ights are long in Porto Cervo and offer a series of elegant, sophisticated venues in which to spend the after-dinner hours, perhaps after having savoured the excellent cuisine of the chefs.

Those who are not interested in letting loose on the dance floor of the renowned Costa Emerald nightclubs, can enjoy excellent cocktails and drinks while remaining in the heart of Porto Cervo. Housed on a splendid terrace overlooking the Porto Cervo inlet, there is Zuma, a two-story restaurant created in 2002 and in which everything recalls the soft, warm colours of wood and bamboo. Here guests can sip cocktails in a sophisticated twist on Japanese izakaya style: from Virgin cocktails to Kirin Ichiban beer, everything is chosen with great care. Having dinner and then deciding to end the evening at Zuma is always an excellent idea. Under the starry sky, with the sound

of the sea as a background, after dinner at Quattro Passi al Pescatore is worth the whole holiday alone. This ‘pieds dans l’eau’ restaurant was designed by famous architect Jacques Couelle in 1960, and excellent wines can be enjoyed on the terrace, furnished with a contemporary rustic look. A short walk from the centre of Porto Cervo, you come to Hotel Luci di la Muntagna, where one of the most stunning sunsets can be admired from the terrace of the Lucina Rooftop Lounge Bar. The view encompasses the Porto Cervo marina, Spargi Island, La Maddalena and the mountains of Corsica.

Ospitato in una splendida terrazza che si affaccia sull’insenatura di Porto Cervo, si trova Zuma, ristorante su due piani creato nel 2002 e in cui tutto richiama ai colori tenui e caldi del legno e del bambù. Qui è possibile consumare cocktail ricercati, frutto di una rilettura sofisticata dello stile giapponese izakaya: dai Virgin cocktail fino alla birra kirin ichiban, tutto è scelto con grande cura. Cenare e poi decidere di finire la serata da Zuma è sempre un’ottima idea. Sotto il cielo stellato, con il rumore del mare a fare

da soffondo, il dopo cena da Quattropassi al Pescatore vale da solo tutta la vacanza. Questo ristorante ‘pies dans l’eau’ fu realizzato dal celebre architetto Jacques Couelle nel 1960 e nella terrazza, arricchita da tavoli, sedute e sospensioni intrecciate, è possibile bere ottimi vini.

A pochi minuti di camminata dal centro di Porto Cervo si raggiunge l’Hotel Luci di la Muntagna. Filindeu, which is also known as fili di Dio [threads of God], is a traditional Sardinian pasta, originally from the city of Nuoro in the centre of the island. This unique product is made by very few families, who have handed down the art of preparing it through the generations.

The name filindeu comes from the specific method of making the pasta, which is pulled and folded to form extremely fine strands - 256 of them, to be exact.

Filindeu has deep connections with the feast of San Francesco di Lula, a religious event celebrated in May and October. During the festival, the women of Nuoro traditionally prepared filindeu.

The pasta was cooked in large pots with mutton provided by the local shepherds, giving a nutritious and flavourful dish which was distributed to pilgrims and participants in the feast.

This ancient culinary tradition is not only an example of Sardinia’s gastronomic art, but is also an important part of the island’s cultural and religious heritage.

Today, filindeu is a symbol of identity and belonging for the Nuoro community, and its preparation remains a secret, jealously guarded by the handful of families who continue to produce it.

Il Filindeu, noto anche come ‘fili di Dio’, è una pasta tradizionale sarda, originaria di Nuoro, una città situata nel cuore della Sardegna. Questa pasta unica è realizzata solo da pochissime famiglie, che hanno tramandato l’arte della sua preparazione di generazione in generazione.

Il nome filindeu deriva dalla particolare lavorazione della pasta, che viene stesa e filata in fili sottilissimi, per l’esattezza 256.

Il filindeu ha un legame profondo con la festa di San Francesco di Lula, un evento religioso che si celebra a maggio e ottobre. Durante questa festa, le donne di Nuoro preparavano il filindeu. La pasta veniva tradizionalmente cotta in grandi pentole insieme a carne di pecora, offerta dai pastori, creando un piatto nutriente e ricco di sapore che veniva poi distribuito ai pellegrini e ai partecipanti della festa.

Questa tradizione culinaria non è solo un esempio di arte gastronomica, ma rappresenta anche un’importante parte del patrimonio culturale e religioso della Sardegna. Oggi, il filindeu è un simbolo di identità e appartenenza per la comunità di Nuoro, e la sua preparazione rimane un segreto custodito gelosamente dalle poche famiglie che continuano a produrlo.
