How was the idea of this market born? More than 22 years ago, we had the intuition to create a space for amateurs to sell everything they wanted to get rid of, allowing people to give away everything they did not make use of anymore. It was something of a revolution because it allowed so many objects to be recycled. How has the Borghetto changed over the years? Today, I think people have better knowledge about the objects they go to sell. Today, we attribute more value to individual pieces. How was the idea of collecting historical clothes born? It all started from the Borghetto, our base and source of endless supply. Today our collection numbers over 6000 pieces including clothes and accessories of high fashion designers such as Balenciaga, Valentino, Capucci, Paco Rabanne, Galitzine and Emilio Pucci. The intuition was to see the clothes as objects of design rather than garments. What is your favorite dress? A dress of black plastic by Paco Rabanne of 1969. I like it very much because it includes elements of space fashion, at the time of the landing on the moon. Today, many dresses from our collection are on loan in important museums of the world. For us it is a source of great satisfaction.
Enrico Quinto is the inventor of the open-air market at Borghetto Flaminio, the first garage sale for enthusiasts that has been held every Sunday in Via Flaminia for over 20 years. Together with his partner Paolo Tinarelli, he has become one of the most important collectors of historical clothes of the 20th century 18 Roma | the Eternal City

In his workshop in Via Margutta, marble worker Enrico Fiorentini carves phrases in marble for tourists and Roman locals. And if you happen to drop by at lunchtime, he might offer you a dish of sublime pasta
Did you always think you would work with your father Sandro? Actually, my family gave me the chance to study: I’m a graduate of architecture and also certified. They still call me Architect today. All of Rome has passed through here. Which customer.... I’m not going to tell you... On the contrary, no, they still have to arrive (he laughs) And then all of Rome, let’s not overdo it: scholars, doctors and wise men have come through here... And even a few f.... I better be quiet! How do your phrases come into being? Listen, think, create... The finest building you’ve ever worked on... Once an American called me, along with some others, to reconstruct the spa at his home in San Francisco. When the work was finished, I saw the owners crying with happiness. A place where people are free to enter, stop a while, and eat... My father used to say: “regardless of who’s here at 1 o’clock, I’m going ahead and eating”. And so it has been to this day. Because my dear friend Alona came along! Your favorite place in Rome? The other day I had an appointment at Palazzo Brancacci. I arrived early and sat down to wait. I looked up: the palace, the forums, the church... What a place I live in! All of Rome is a wonder... In this regard, I’m reminded of an inscription: every time I go to Milan, I give thanks that my mother made me Roman Ha sempre pensato di lavorare con suo padre Sandro? Anzi no quello che deve venire (ride). E pure qualche f…. Meglio se stò zitto! Come nascono le sue frasi? Sentite, pensate, create …

et m r u o G a z z i P RI INTENDITO PIZZA PER
text Veronica Sgaravatti
He tells us how the idea to open this pizzeria was born. The idea began with the desire to apply the principles of great ingredients to pizza. A pizzeria in Italy is a popular restaurant that is informal and accessible to everyone. Emma was conceived to combine this way of marketing pizza with a very high quality product. In a zone of the city with a high density of pizzerias and restaurants, what is Emma’s calling card? Emma has united the simplicity of pizza to first-class seasonal products and accessible prices. We have also added a traditional restaurant with express dishes on a well-structured menu and a rich wine list. We use oils from all over Italy and the unbeatable bread of Pierluigi Roscioli. What is the secret of your pizza? Emma was conceived to give Roman pizza a new dignity. We develop our dough in three long levitation phases and we use only 0.6 grams of yeast for each kilo of flour. The dough is made from a selection of organic flours, it is easy to digest and the crust is aromatic and crisp. The wood burned in the oven comes exclusively from the mountains and confers an intense aroma during baking. What are your projects for the future? Right now, we are working on opening an emporium to sell products and the ingredients we use for the restaurant, including the egg pasta we produce every day. For the future, we have received several proposals, mostly from the United States.
Francesco Roscino, a young Roman entrepreneur, is the owner of Emma, a pizzeria with kitchen, just a few steps from Campo de’ Fiori. From 2003, he worked with his best pal and later partner, Pierluigi Roscioli, to find the best quality ingredients 22 Roma | the Eternal City

When was your passion for fashion born? I grew up in a family that did a lot of traveling. When I was eighteen, I lived in London to study. Thanks to some coincidences, from there I traveled to India and Thailand. In India, I started to design my first collection. It was 2011, I was so electrified by the fabrics and the elegance of Indian women that I just felt compelled to create garments that I then presented in Italy. Why did you return to live in Italy? I lived in Madrid and in Ibiza from when I was eighteen and that’s where I opened my first showroom. Then I came back to Italy, to Rome because I became the mother of two marvelous children, and for work. What inspires you? My fashion is inspired by art, by traveling, by poetry and by music. It’s an inspiration with distant origins. They are all lined and made of silk. They occupy very little space in the suitcase. My line of T-shirts grew out of a synthesis of the time in which we live. I created them for every woman who loves the designs printed on them, What is luxury for you? Having time to travel and to open and expand your mind. What are the musts in a woman’s closet? She must have beautiful and refined lingerie, a T-shirt, her favorite jeans and a perfume that belongs to her alone.
Ludovica Amati is an unusual designer and a traveler. She is young, beautiful, sensitive and a free spirit. She was born in Rome but has lived in London, India and Israel. In Tel Aviv, she studied Hebrew and created her second line of T-shirts, LA13. She has a studio at Via Giulia 95 24 Roma | the Eternal City
Perché è tornata a vivere in Italia?

Why did you decide to open a hammam in Rome? I opened the hammam ten years ago. I had this space where I worked. I have always been a restorer, and this was my storage area. From the first time I set foot in it, it struck me as a place of meditation. It was divided into small rooms, but it my head it could have become a place to take care of well-being. Is this what inspired you for the hammam project? Certainly, I took my cue from Greco-Roman culture. The place has always been divided up, so it was easy to use it for what I had in mind. To create a spa with a hot room, a tepid room and a cold room, to respect the tradition of the ancient Romans. What is the most popular service? Undoubtedly the hammam and its accessory services. How would you describe your most loyal customers? Women, without a doubt. The women bring the men and often offer them the treatment. There are days when the hammam is mixed, like on the weekend, and other days for women only. Why do people come to the hammam? To relax. The greatest affluence is over the weekend, with no more than 12 persons in each environment. The hammam is recreation that donates relaxation and well-being, stemming from profound harmony with your own body, abandonment and meditation.
Mario Gammino is the heart and soul of Acqua Madre Hammam, the first Turkish bath in Rome, created in an archeological space in Via S. Ambrogio 17, between the fountain of the Turtles and the Porticus Octaviae. It is a magical place that evokes the atmospheres Perché ha deciso di aprire un hammam a Roma? of the ancient Greco-Roman baths L’hammam l’ho aperto 10 anni fa.
Sicuramente l’hammam e i servizi correlati. Perché le persone vengono all’hammam?

MAGGIO Botero in mostra a Roma.
Una fotografa ritrovata, is the title of the exhibition at the Museo di Roma in Trastevere until 18 June 2017. Vivian Maier portrayed the cities where she lived - New York and Chicago - with a curious glance, attracted by little details, particulars and imperfections, but also children, old people and by the life that unrolled in front of her on the street, by the city and its inhabitants in a moment of fervid social and cultural changes. lavoro fotografico della grande e sconosciuta autrice: Vivian Maier.

city itinerary
You can cross Rome thousands of times without ever feeling that you know it completely. It’s often surprising to see a detail or perspective that until then, you hadn’t noticed. This is the case with the columns and obelisks that have centuries and sometimes thousands of years of history behind them, sometimes less noticeable than the palaces and fountains. The capital city hosts the largest number of obelisks in the world, of which thirteen are ancient, mainly from ancient Egypt, where they were believed to be solar symbols. They were transported to Rome during the imperial period following the Roman conquest campaign. In monolithic basalt, they bore commemorative engravings on the sides and were placed in pairs at the entrance of the temples. Some were buried for centuries and re-emerged in 1500, while other decorative ones were created more recently on the Egyptian model. The Flaminio Obelisk, almost 24 meters high, comes from the Sun Temple in Heliopolis in Egypt, where it was erected in 1200 B.C. by Pharaohs Seti I and Ramses II in front of the Sun Temple. It was among the first to be brought to Rome by Emperor Augustus in 10 B.C. and placed in the Circus Maximus to celebrate the victory over Egypt. In 1589, it was relocated to Piazza del Popolo by Pope Sixtus V, who wanted to dedicate it to the Holy Cross. It still stands there today. In St. Peter’s Square, we find the very famous Vatican obelisk in red granite, over 25 meters high, and more than 3200 years old. In 37 A.D., Caligula had a ship built specifically to hold its 350 tons to bring it from Heliopolis to Rome to adorn Nero’s private Circus, located in what is today the sacristy of the Basilica. In 1586 it was moved to the center of the square at the behest of the energetic Pope Sixtus V, with a project by architect Domenico Fontana that used a complex pulley system, winches, workers and horses.

cross containing the relics of the Holy Cross was placed on its top. The red granite Macuteo obelisk from the Pantheon is little more than six meters high, and stands in Piazza della Rotonda. It also comes from Heliopolis, where it was erected in 1200 BC and moved to Rome in an unspecified era along with its twin, currently at Villa Celimontana. It was intended to adorn the Temple of Isis and Serapis in the Campus Martius. In the 14th century the obelisk in question was placed first in Piazza San Macuto then moved in 1711 at the behest of Pope Clement XI in front of the Pantheon, at the center of the 16th-century fountain by Giacomo della Porta. Not far away is the Minerva obelisk, about five and a half meters high, also from Heliopolis, built in the 6th century B.C. by Pharaoh Aprie. It was found in 1665 near the Temple of Isis in Campus Martius and placed at the behest of Pope Alexander VII Chigi on an original pedestal designed by Bernini: a small marble elephant supports it on its back and, symbolically, with its strong mind, the solid wisdom of the ancient Egyptians. The 16-meter tall Agonal obelisk stands at the center of Piazza Navona and was created at the time of Emperor Domitian on an Egyptian model, to adorn his villa in Albano. In 311, Maxentius had it moved to the circus of his villa on the Ancient Appian Way. In 1651, Bernini restored it and placed it at the center of the Fountain of the Four Rivers, where it stands today. Positioned at its top is a dove, symbolizing the Pamphili family and representing the Holy Spirit spread across four continents. The almost 14-meter high Sallustiano obelisk stands in Piazza Trinita dei Monti, overlooking the Spanish Steps. It was created in imperial times on an Egyptian model, and bears the Egyptian hieroglyphics found on the Flaminio obelisk. Originally adorning the hippodrome of the Gardens of Sallust, it was given in 1738 to Pope Clement XII by the Ludovisi family, but erected only in 1789 in front of the Trinita dei Monti church.

The triumphal columns or coclidee were the Roman answer to Egyptian obelisks, icons of imperial triumphs and later symbols of Christianity. These were large celebratory columns, consisting of heavy marble blocks, decorated with an upward-spiraling frieze. Inside each one was a spiral staircase, almost 200 steps, whose spiral was called a coclide. The first to be built in Rome was Trajan’s column, a sculptural masterpiece in excellent condition, looming before the Forum of Trajan. The ‘centenary’ type, meaning a hundred Roman feet high, almost thirty meters, was built in 113 AD by Emperor Trajan. On the top was a bronze statue, lost during the Middle Ages, and replaced by the statue of Saint Peter, the patron of Rome. A continuous frieze like a scroll spirals up the column’s shaft 23 times and contains 150 scenes and about 2500 figures. It illustrates the Roman army’s military campaign in Dacia, today’s Romania, and celebrates the exploits of Trajan and the Roman army. Highlights of battles are shown in meticulous detail, including violent scenes of women tortured and heads severed, conveying a sense of pity for the vanquished. The second centenary coclidea column was that of Marcus Aurelius. It stands isolated in the center of Piazza Colonna. Built by Commodus in 180 A.D. and standing near a temple, it randomly illustrates the victories of Marcus Aurelius over the Germanic and Hungarian populations. On the top was a bronze statue of Marcus Aurelius and Faustina, lost during the Middle Ages and replaced from 1588 by Pope Sixtus V with the statue of Saint Paul. The Column of Phocas, 13.60 meters high, was built with the pieces of a 2nd-century A.D. column from the Temple of Vesta and is now in the Roman Forum. It was the last to be erected in the city center in 608 A.D. to thank the Eastern Emperor Nicephorus Phocas for having given Rome and Pope Boniface IV the pagan temple of the Pantheon. Originally, at the top was a gold statue of Phocas, but it was destroyed. grandi colonne celebrative, costituite da pesantissimi blocchi in marmo, decorate da un fregio, che si arrotola verso l’alto.

Giovanna Mezzogiorno, onstage in the theater and with one art film soon coming out, tells it all Giovanna Mezzogiorno, a teatro e in uscita con un film rigorosamente d’autore, si racconta “I’m a nerd,” says the award-winning, rigorous, composed and much loved Giovanna Mezzogiorno when talking about herself. Actress, daughter of great actors, Vittorio Mezzogiorno and Cecilia Sacchi, born in Rome and raised in Casal Palocco and later in Milan, followed by eight years in Paris. Before moving to Turin, where she lived for several years with her family, she lived in the heart of Rome, in Borgo Pio, in a house that she loved. She debuted in the cinema in 1997 with The Bride’s Journey by Sergio Rubini, followed by almost bulimic roles in cult films such as Gabriele Muccino’s The Last Kiss (2001), Ferzan Ozpetek’s Facing Windows (2003), Cristina Comencini’s The Beast in the Heart (2005), Love in the Time of Cholera alongside Javier Bardem (2007), with Wim Wenders in Palermo Shooting (2008), Vincere, directed by Marco Bellocchio (2009), and Basilicata coast to coast, directed by Rocco Papaleo (2010). We met her with a movie coming out in April, La tenerezza by Gianni Amelio alongside Elio Germano and Micaela Ramazzotti, and another, perhaps in May, directed by Ferzan Ozpetek. Meanwhile she has also dedicated herself to theater, twenty years after debuting with Peter Brook, and on Sky Athlantic she is the analyst of the psychotherapist Sergio Castellitto in the third season of In Treatment A time of great artistic pressure, how are you coping with managing it from Turin and no longer from Rome? It is just the right distance from the flurry of the productions to allow me to deal with work in a healthy way. Obviously I have to travel a lot, but it is a sacrifice that I am willing to make. What do you miss the most about your home town? The atmosphere of a city that never sleeps. Even in the middle of the night in Rome you can hear people talking, leaving restaurants, strolling down the street. However, I believe that the recent local authorities have not lived up to its complexity and beauty. You recently returned to the theater with a play by John Were directed by Valerio Binasco. What is your relationship with the stage? It was a type of preparation that I was not used to because so far my life has revolved more around the cinema, but I like the theater and I 64 Roma | the Eternal City

From the left, Mezzogiorno in the third season of In Treatment; the actress in two frames of La tenerezza
faced it with great enthusiasm. It was in fact the artistic experience with a legend contemporary theater that marked the beginning of your career. What is the most important thing that Peter Brook taught you? He helped me to understand that, yes, I wanted to do this job. And then I took on the values of his theatrical troupe, one of the hardest in the world, a gym of rigor, discipline and total dedication to work. Tells us about the period when you filmed Love in the Time of Cholera, was sharing the set with Javier Bardem a challenge? It was an excruciatingly tiring film ... But other than that it was wonderful to be guided by a great director such as Newell and work alongside an actor like Javier Bardem. And what do you remember about Wim Wenders? A man full of poetry, sweetness, never angry, and very friendly. And an artistic greatness that is almost as unattainable as it is multifaceted. Of the many awards received what is one that you feel most attached to? I am attached to all of them, but the one that makes me particularly proud was the prize from the American film critics association prize for Vincereby Bellocchio because it was unexpected (she plays Ida Dalser, the alleged first wife of Mussolini, ed.). What is the principle that has guided you artistic choices so far? I have to trust the director - this depends very much on his humanity. And I have always chosen without being cunning. Has it been rewarding? I stopped for four years to devote myself to my children and my family, a monstrously long time in my area where everyone is scared of being forgotten. What allowed me to start back up again was in fact having created an environment of trust and credibility. What is the film by Gianni Amelio that is coming out in April about and what is your role in the movie? It is a film on the theme of abandonment and it recounts the painful relationship between an unemotional father, Renato Carpentieri, and his sons, a rocky relationship that finds a resolution within the story. I play Elena, Carpentieri’s daughter. It is a beautiful film - the screenplay is one of the most beautiful that I have ever read. In May you will begin shooting the new film by Ferzan Ozpetek, almost fifteen years after Facing Windows. Can you tell us anything about it? A great joy to once again work with a director and a friend with whom I shared a movie that people still talk about today ... It is a very dark, strange, visionary movie, in Ferzan’s style, set in a magical city, Naples, where Gianni Amelio’s film is also set.
Private novels ROMANZI PRIVATI text Veronica Sgaravatti
Simona Sparaco tells her story. She writes for herself, but a whole generation wants to be moved Simona Sparaco si racconta: scrive di sé per emozionare una intera generazione Simona Sparaco is a writer and a script writer. Born in Rome, young and beautiful, she has a natural gift for writing. There is always something of herself in her novels, something that has happened to her and that she always succeeds in transmitting to readers as if they were feeling that emotion themselves. She considers herself introspective, distracted and disorganized. Only when I comment that these are three negative traits, she admits that being altruistic, sensitive and imaginative are her merits. When did you start writing? I started early. In elementary school my teacher told me I had a talent for writing and that I should cultivate it. When I had to write an essay in class, he took me around the other classrooms, to read my essay out loud. At 12, I wrote my first novel, for myself of course, and at 20 I self-published, as Moravia did. In 2008, a publisher finally published my second work, Lovebook, which talks about a love story that happens in the Facebook age. What is your source of inspiration and the key to your success? I write about my experiences. I start with something that has happened to me recently, and when I write, I always think of something I would like. I am moved when I reread my work and I believe that I succeed in transmitting the same emotions to my readers who recognize themselves in my stories. Your latest novel, Sono cose da grandi, is a letter to your son. It is a little different than the others. How was it born? It is my important novel. It was a personal thing, which I had written only for my son and for me to expose the things that frighten me and I think may some day cause him anguish too. My agent read it and, in her enthusiasm, told me it would be beautiful to share it with others. Pub68 Roma | the Eternal City

lishing it would mean helping many other people who could recognize themselves in this story. Writing, for me, is something like a therapy I use to get to know myself better. What time of the day is most inspiring for you? For years, before Diego who is now four, I always wrote at night. Today, I can’t do that any more because I need to sleep, so I find time for myself during the day. I love to write in the bathtub because I can relax. I’ve put a plywood board above the soap dish that crosses the tub at the halfway mark and set my computer on it. I like the idea of writing with the PC suspended over the water. What do you do in your free time? I like to go to Villa Glori, where there are ponies. They remind me of my infancy and I make peace with the girl I was. Another thing I especially love to do is to visit the exhibitions at the Vittoriano. That area behind the Forums, I believe it’s one of the most beautiful views in the world. What is your favorite book? Anna Karenina, without a doubt. What moment of the day do you prefer? I love the evening, when I put Diego to bed and tell him fables. When I climb into bed is also the moment when I give in to my sin of gluttony and devour my favorite, horrible snacks: potato chips, olives and salted lupins, all doused with cold tea. Are you writing a new novel? Yes, I am working on a script and a novel at the same time. It is a very interesting idea and I believe it could be very beautiful from a cinematographic point of view too. But it’s early to talk it about now. A dream for your future? My dream was to become a writer, so let’s just say that I have taken a good stride. I hope to continue doing this forever. Simona Sparaco has published these novels: Anime di carta (2005); Lovebook (2008); Bastardi senza amore (2010); Nessuno sa di noi (2013); Se chiudo gli occhi (2014); Equazione di un amore (2016); Sono cose da grandi (2017).

The energy of Rome L’ENERGIA DI ROMA text Veronica Sgaravatti
Paola Calliari loves to act, to dance and more... Her city of choice Paola Calliari ama recitare, ballare e... la sua città d’adozione
Paola Calliari is a young actress of 26. She was born in Trento but has always travelled, given her adventurous spirit and desire to discover new things. On 6 April, The Start Up by Alessandro D’Alatri, in which she stars as the protagonist, will debut in movie theaters in Italy and, after just one week, Marito e Moglie by Simone Godano will also open, where she appears beside Pierfrancesco Favino and Kasia Smutniack. How did you get started in acting? My passion as a little girl was dance. I did artistic gymnastics but I also loved doing plays at school. I have always loved being at the center of attention. What do you like best about acting? Telling stories written by others and putting them into action. Immerging yourself in someone else’s story and being able to incarnate it. When did this become your profession? I’ve been acting for fifteen years, but it became my work only since I finished the acting academy where I studied for three years in Rome. What is your greatest passion? I love what I’m doing and the emotion on stage is what I like the best. The theater is the greatest expression for acting and for dance. The two are complements for me and I cannot say which I prefer to do. If I don’t do one of the two, I don’t feel well. You have always done a lot of travelling. What have you learned from your trips? I have always been curious and interested in culture. I like languages and love to learn new things. I am a person who is open to the world. What is the latest thing you have learned? Hebrew. I learned it while I was taking a dance course and going horseback riding in Jerusalem. What is the place you love best in Rome? I love green. Recently, I moved near to the park of the aqueducts and I would say that is my favorite zone. In addition to the Pantheon, I find its architecture fantastic. That central hole where the light comes in gives me incredible energy. 72 Roma | the Eternal City

“Everything starts with a blank page... Riccardo Zannetti’s words are always excellent.” Riccardo Zannetti. The story of the Zannetti Handmade Watches begins with a great passion, that of Carmine Zannetti for watches. He was a master goldsmith, an enthusiast of fine mechanics and mechanics of precision. Carmine is succeeded by Mario Zannetti, whose geometric designs still influence production. In 1982 his son Richard, now owner of the Zannetti universe, continued along this path and began producing watches for large contemporary watchmaking brands alongside creations for private clients. Italian creativity and craftsmanship. What is the process for getting one of your watches? Each model has its own characteristics, each finish requires a certain time. If we are talking about our personalized watched, the process is quite complex: there is the first contact with the customer, then the design, and finally the approval. We then go to implement the design on the dial and to beginning the various processes, from engraving, to glazing and setting gems. We then mount and finish it. How long does it take to create one of your timepieces?

Behind some models is the work of several master craftsmen, with different techniques and characteristics. As a result, it can take anything from a few weeks to several months to achieve the desired result. For the personalized products it takes at least four or five weeks to create the final product from the first contact with the customer. What remains of the design in the end product? In the custom models, the end product is strongly linked to the initial design. Craft and avant-garde techniques: how do they coexist? In normal production they do not coexist. For a big brand it is almost impossible to use
A strong point of Zannetti is the use of glazes and engraving on the dials or on the cases. Are there predisposed craftsmen? There are very few masters craftsmen who can engrave or enamel a dial or a case. Their contribution is an integral part of Zannetti. We are proud to give them a chance to express themselves through our timepieces. What is the difference between a great industrial product and a top-of-therange handcrafted one? Every piece, every single watch, is ultimately unique. When a craftsman engraves a dial, when an enameller applies color, the end result

Tecniche artigiane e d’avanguardia, come convivono?
“There are very few masters in the art of etching or enameling a dial ...” traditional techniques and, in very rare cases where this happens, the customer pays stratospheric amounts. For us it is different. We have our craftsmen and we have a limited but top quality production. We can therefore bring together highly-technological products with antique finishes - this is exactly what the customers ask us for. Is a watchmaker also a mathematician? Absolutely! Accuracy in the measurement of time requires mathematical rules and meticulous construction. It is not surprising that we only use the best of Swiss mechanics.
is something totally original. You cannot repeat it. Industrial products are all, sadly, the same! What is Zannetti’s philosophy? Creating unique pieces that give the owners true emotions. Also we are very price-conscious. Our watches are definitely realistic in this respect. What are you working on today? We have just presented a new collection, the Discobolo. Its design allows us to create models in steel, bronze, gold, as well as with precious stones. All this while having an extraordinary fit and being of great impact and pleasure.
assolutamente originale. A cosa sta lavorando oggi? Roma | the Eternal City 103

A wiew of Janiculum and the equestrian statue is dedicated to Anita, Garibaldi’s heroic companion 106 Roma | the Eternal City
city itinerary
From the terrace of the Janiculum you can delight in one of the most spectacular views of Rome. It is one of the must-have photos because in one click you can capture all the beauties and monuments of the eternal city. Janiculum Hill is located behind the Trastevere area and slopes down to Saint Peter’s Basilica. It is undoubtedly one of the most romantic places in Rome. Couples, students and tourists got to the terrace on Janiculum Hill to admire the breathtaking view over the rooftops of Rome, the ancient ruins and the hundreds of domes that fill the city. A favorite game is to try to spot as many monuments as possible. The Altare della patria, the Roman Forum, the Trinità dei Monti, Piazza del Popolo and the dome of St Peter’s. Passing by Porta San Pancrazio you arrive at the Museum of the Roman Republic and, from here, two large avenues with beautiful plane trees lining Villa Aurelia lead us to Piazzale Garibaldi. At the base of the monument to the hero of the two worlds, an artwork by Emilio Gallori (1895), the famous phrase “Either Rome or death” is inscribed. In 1849 this square was the scene of a heroic battle in which the red shirts of Garibaldi resisted the French troops for weeks, despite the French being far superior. Not far another equestrian statue is dedicated to Anita, Garibaldi’s heroic companion. Nearby is the Parco degli Eroi with busts of the defenders of the Roman Republic, a panoramic point on whose parapet is engraves the text of the Constitution of the Roman Republic, and the Piazzale del Faro with a lighthouse donated to Italy by Argentina. If you visit the Janiculum in the late morning, just a few minutes before 12, then you can see three soldiers pulling on an antique cannon onto the terrace of the Janiculum and a loud shot is fired at noon exactly. This has taken place every day since 1847, when Pope Pius IX established the cannon signal to help align the bells of Rome’s churches. The cannon was placed on Castel Gandolfo and then in 1904 it was moved to the Janiculum Hill: its shot can be heard throughout the center of Rome. Another sight to discover is the Church of San Pietro in Montorio with Bramante’s famous tempietto, situated in one of the most beautiful corners of Rome, highly sought after for weddings. The tempietto, built by Bramante in 1502, stands on the site where, according to tradition, the Apostle Peter was Dalla terrazza del Gianicolo si gode uno dei panorami più spettacolari di Roma, uno dei must have delle fotoricordo perché in uno scatto si racchiudono tutte le bellezze e i monumenti della città eterna.

crucified on the cross upside down; the little commemorative tomb is round inside and on the altar there is a statue of the apostle, created by an unknown artist of the 16th century. Another area to pass through is the Fontanone dell’Acqua Paola, commonly called Fontanone, dating from the early 17th century, designed by the architects Giovanni Fontana and Flaminio Ponzio: this fountain consists of five large arches flanked by columns and a large attic and is made with bare white and polychrome marble from the Roman Forum and the Temple of Minerva inn the Forum of Nerva, while the red and gray granite columns belonged to the old Constantinian basilica of St. Peter. Carlo Fontana modified it at the end of the 17th century, giving the fountain its current form: a monumental marble basin instead of five basins, originally inserted between the columns of the arches. The Janiculum does not have many restaurants and bars (to find them you must go down to Trastevere) but there are some good ones. In Piazzale Aurelio the Gianucolo Bar offers great juices and beers, while for a more elite aperitif there is la Terrazza di San Pancrazio, with good background music. Three excellent restaurants are: Carpe Diem, with Roman specialties in Via San Pancrazio; Antico Arco at Piazzale Aurelio 7, with an excellent cuisine of meat and fish; and Antica Pesa in Via Garibaldi, which offers an entirely Roman menu. A walk through Janiculum leads to Trastevere by means of the Sant’Onofrio steps where there is the small church that is part of a monastery with a small museum in which there are the remains of Torquato Tasso. At the foot of the steps is the Botanical Garden, which covers an area of 12 hectares with a park and greenhouses. Its collections are of particular interest not only for the scientific aspect but also, and especially, for the methods of cultivation and the dramatic reconstruction of the environments, which help the visitor in the difficult task of placing the species in their area of origin. The Botanical Garden has over 8000 species of plants and also an indoor path for the blind with the classification of the plants in braille and an olfactive journey that leads to “the perfume garden”. Of particular interest are the Japanese Garden, the area devoted to bamboo, the medicinal plants of the area and, in the spring, a walk to admire the multitude of flowers in full bloom is a must. rotonda, sull’altare è posta una statua dell’apostolo, realizzata da un ignoto artista del Cinquecento.

A short list of shows you won’t want to miss this spring in Rome. The Mediterranean in Chiaroscuro. Ribera, Stomer and Mattia Preti from Malta to Rome This is the exhibition that Malta organized to inaugurate its semester of European presidency. Eighteen works of art retrace the intense historical and artistic relations that existed between Italy and Malta from the 1600s, when Malta became progressively more receptive to the style and invention of the baroque style in Rome, as the paintings on view make evident. The legacy of Caravaggio and his new painting are at the core of the exposition that compares masterpieces from Malta with those in Roman collections. When: until 21 May 2017. For the first time a major monographic exhibition brings together a conspicuous number of these paintings, which are considered to be a kind manifesto of Baselitz’s painting and to mark a milestone in the history of contemporary art. Doffing the positive image associated with the rhetoric of war and postwar propaganda, Baselitz’s Heroes display fragility, precariousness and inconsistency. On April 10th at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, Sandro Lombardi reads L’ultimo nastro di Krapp (Krapp’s Last Tape), a one-act play by Samuel Beckett. Actor, performer and author, Lombardi is a veritable sacred monster of Italian contemporary theatre, winner of the Ubu Prize 2016 for Best Actor (for the sixth time) for Calderòn, a co-production between the Teatro di Roma and the Teatro di Toscana. This April offers an opportunity to hear him once again tackling an author he finds especially congenial. Returning to the Teatro Sistina from April 12th to April 23rd, Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s masterpiece, Jesus Christ Superstar, now known to history as one of the most famous and beloved musicals in the world. This is the Italian language version directed by Massimo Romeo Piparo, starring the legendary actor Ted Neeley in the role of Jesus. From April 13th to April 15th at the Auditorium Parco della Musica, the Orchestra and Chorus of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia conducted by Antonio Pappano will perform a masterpiece of the sacred music repertoire. The Passione secondo Giovanni (St. John Passion), retracing the sacrifice of Christ, is one of the best known and most beloved works written by Bach. On April 18th, again at the Auditorium, Gigi Proietti returns to the Sala Santa Cecilia almost two years after the premiere of his extraordinary, successful one-man show, Cavalli di Battaglia (with performances always sold out). Cavalli di Battaglia is an excursus into Proietti’s repertoire: popular, dramaturgic, singing, mime, poetry, parody, comic, human, multicultural. A contamination of the genres that characterize his shows and which are the ingredients of his great success. The city rose garden IL ROSETO DELLA CITTÀ text Gabrielle Bolzoni
During the period of flowering, from 21 April to 19 June, the rose garden opens its gates Nel periodo della fioritura, che va dal 21 aprile al 19 giugno, il roseto apre i battenti Rome cultivates a magic place at the foot of the Aventine hill where Spring bursts into bloom every year in a triumph of colors and perfumes. The city’s rose garden was created in 1933 at the will of countess Mary Gayley Senni, inspired by Josephine Bonaparte, who was the first at end 1700s to launch the idea of a garden of roses only. It fits in between the slopes of the Aventine and the Circus Maximus on one hectare of land that had been the site of the Jewish cemetery, transferred by will of Mussolini to the monumental cemetery of Verano (although voices have it that 5000 souls still lie buried under the rose garden). The Jewish community gave its consent to transform this sacred place into a garden at the condition that only roses be planted. Architect Di Castro designed the garden in the form of a menorah, the Jewish candle holder, and there is a commemorative plaque at the entrance representing the Tablets of the Law, a reminder of the holiness of this place. During the period of flowering, from 21 April, anniversary of the founding of Rome, to 19 June, the rose garden opens its gates to enthusiasts and offers very pleasant guided visits. It is divided in two sections: the collection, with approx. 1200 species of the sixty thousand that exist in the world; and the competition area, which hosts a prestigious international competition in May where every year about one hundred new varieties are proposed. Strolling in the rose garden, we are slightly overwhelmed by the perfume and fascinated by the stories narrated by rose expert and environmental instructor, Antonello Santelli, who makes his knowledge available to visitors. Mr. Santelli tells us the story of each flower, of which he recalls the characteristics, the anecdotes and the rarity. Although apparently delicate, the rose is a hardy and resistant plant that prospers in cool, ventilated areas of the great Mediterranean cities, where they do however suffer from many fungal diseases. Farmers have always planted roses, called the spy or sentinel plant, at the head of every row in the vineyard, because if it sickens, the vine will soon follow. There are two groups of roses that pre-date the twentieth century, characterized by intense perfume and a single flowering: the

species or botanical roses, which grew spontaneously in nature in the northern hemisphere and were exported by the colonists in the 1700s, including the rosa canina, used for pharmaceutical purposes; and the antique roses, or spontaneous hybrids, such as the rosa gallica, a favorite of the ancient Romans who cultivated it at Paestum and exported it to the world, and the very aromatic damask rosa, imported by the Crusaders, from which a very precious distillate is obtained (three to five kilos of petals are required to obtain one gram of distillate). In the history of humanity, all highly evolved civilizations have cultivated roses, pods of which have been found even in Egyptian sarcophagi. China has a long history related to roses. In fact, roses were cultivated in Chinese pagodas when the great European capitals did not yet exist. Today, China holds the record for spontaneous and naturally reflowering roses, called Chinese roses, imported in the 1800s by plant hunters, sent to the Orient by aristocrats who wished to adorn their European palaces and castles. In the 1900s, the modern rose category was born. It had a long stem and flowered all year round but was scentless and short-lived, a beauty with no soul, as our guide says. In the 1960s, David Austin, an English gentleman, created a hybrid of the modern with the antique rose, which produced the English rose, cupped shape, well-perfumed and reflowering, the best-seller in the world today. At the end of the 1930s, producer Francis Mailland decided to protect and preserve one type from the German invasion and sent a few prototypes to America. It was only at the end of the war, in 1945, that this type of rose appeared again at the San Francisco Conference, when the rose called Peace/Gioia, believed to be extinct, was donated to all the participants. We invite you to visit this magic place that instills so much serenity and good cheer. 136 Roma | the Eternal City

Natural synergy SINERGIA NATURALE
text Gabrielle Bolzoni photo Valentina Stefanelli Dining at Zuma, the most glamorous place in Rome A cena da Zuma, il locale più glamour di Roma
Going out to dinner at Zuma is a real sensory experience. Here, taste, experimentation and tradition create an ensemble that is not easily forgotten. Zuma, that blew out it first candle this year, is in fact one of the most glamorous restaurants in the city, much in demand for lunches and dinners. Because of this, you should book well in advance, especially for the evening. The thing that distinguishes it is the location, the spectacular setting of Palazzo Fendi in Piazza Goldoni: the combination of ZUMA and the timeless Maison Fendi, the restaurant’s local partner, that shares its values and sophistication, has created a natural synergy of style, design, excellence and creativity. After entering the historic building from Largo Fontanella Borghese, the elevator takes us up to the fourth floor, In the spacious main dining room in oriental decor, we find a first kitchen on the left and following that the sushi counter, where Italian and Japanese sushi chefs, lined up along the counter, masterfully prepare delicacies with seaweed, rice and fish. Here we meet the talented chef Massimiliano Blasone, for eleven years a disciple of Heinz Beck at La Pergola and executive chef for prestigious restaurants, including Apsleys in the Lanesborough Hotel in London, where he was awarded a Michelin star after four months. He tells us that he was called back to Rome last year for what is considered the capital’s most important opening of 2016. Blasone coordinates the kitchen at Zuma, assisted by three sous-chefs - Kate Allan, Paolo Bianchi, Alessio Conti - and a team of tireless helpers. Every detail is carefully checked, from the shopping, which he often does personally at the Trionfale Market, to the freshness of the seafood, and the timing of the dishes served. It was the English school that taught him all the tricks of the trade. Blasone shows us that in the rich and sophisticated menu, thee are three different styles of cuisine, allowing customers to try foods with different looks and tastes: the main kitchen, which serves contemporary dishes, the Sushi Bar with expert sushi chefs and the Robata Grill which uses coal, inspired by the cuisine of the fishermen in northern Japan, where meat and fish are grilled together. Blasone recommends that we taste the red crispy Mazara
Zuma Rome, the staff shrimp with spicy broth, the anchovies in tempura and miso-marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf, considered to be Zuma’s most outstanding dishes. The secret of Zuma’s success lies in the perfect balance between quality, quantity and competitive prices. The team consists of young people who work well together, preparing dishes for to 275 guests per evening. Soon the amazing terrace on the fifth floor will be opening, with stunning 360 degree views over the Eternal City. The restaurant, designed by the Japanese designer Noriyoshi Muramatsu of Studio Glitt, is striking for the energy that permeates it and the warm colors, inspired by the four natural elements and Izakaya, the most informal Japanese culinary style.. The wine and spirits list, awarded in 2017 by the prestigious Identita`Golose Guide, offers an original choice between forty types of sake, selected by sake sommelier Michele Brando. The bar, a destination in its own right, serves up unique cocktails and delicious reinterpretations of historic drinks but made with Japanese spirits and fresh fruit. The German chef Rainer Becker founded the brand in London in 2002 with the enlightened entrepreneur Arjun Waney. In a short time, Zuma’s philosphy has achieved a resounding international success. Rome marks the second opening in Europe and the tenth in the world by the Group, and in a decade, nine restaurants have been launched in London, New York, Miami, Hong Kong and Dubai, among others. The Zuma experience is sensory, and sophisticated. Rainer claims to have found “the perfect home” in Rome, Zuma has won this challenge in Rome thanks to the originality of the formula, revolutionary for the capital, and its unique appeal.

The taste of spring GUSTO DI PRIMAVERA text Marco Talluri
The puntarelle: from Imperial Rome to now, a popular but sublime dish Le puntarelle: dalla Roma Imperiale a oggi, una scelta popolare ma sublime
Asparagus chicory, that is the variety of chicory (Cicorium Intybus) with shoots inside the head that resemble asparagus, was already known to the ancient Greeks and is particularly loved by Romans today. It is no accident that the dressing still used today to enjoy the salad version of this specialty, Puntarelle alla Romana, recalls what must have been the taste of garum, the sauce based on fish entrails that was very popular at the time of Imperial Rome. Although chicory is available in Rome all year round, the ideal season is late spring. The shoots are particularly fragrant and superbly crunchy (scrocchiarelli) until July. When in Rome, you will find them in all of the dozens of neighborhood markets in the city, already cleaned and curled and ready to be dressed with the traditional recipe or a milder version, without garlic, as the author prefers. For do-it-yourselfers, we suggest you equip yourself with a taglia puntarelle. This is a special tool made of wood and harmonic wire with a central hole where you will pass the puntarelle or shoots, after removing the thin leaves and the skin. The shoots have a green point and become paler toward the base. The white part, which is the hardest, should be removed; use only the tender part. After selecting the part of the shoot to be used, peel the shaft with a knife. The skin is very thin and almost transparent. Now pass the shoot from the base to the point through the taglia puntarelle (www.tagliapuntarelle.it), cutting it into thin slivers. Once these are left soaking in water for twenty minutes, they will curl and are ready for dressing. Preparing the dressing is just as simple. You can use pestle and mortar (like the author) or a blender. For two persons: 1 clove of garlic, 10 anchovy filets, 4 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil. Place the garlic and anchovy filets in the blender and add the oil gradually. You will need at least 100 grams of puntarelle per person, or about 300 grams of chicory to be cleaned and skinned. For cooked puntarelle, try the “Ai Piani” recipe for spaghetti with clams, bottarga and puntarelle. 148 Roma | the Eternal City
