text Veronica Sgaravatti

How was this passion born? I studied in Switzerland, Holland and England and, at the Swiss lyceum I had a very good drawing teacher who was able to make me love painting. For the rest, I taught myself. I have always traveled a lot, and for my work I have visited over a hundred different countries, which has increased my curiosity and stimulated my vocation to dedicate myself exclusively to painting. What can you tell us about your painting? I do an abstract, informal but conceptual painting. Before creating a work I think a lot about it, partly because of the large formats of my works. It is inconceivable for me to paint outside of my studio. What materials do you use? I paint with oil and acrylics, on canvas, cardboard and wood but the material I now prefer is metal. I have developed a technique for which, after having painted on metallic laminates, I have them enameled with hot epoxy resins and this makes my works absolutely contemporary. Who is the painter you admire most? Anselm Kiefer, because his composition and his chromatic sense fascinate me. What is your source of inspiration? The nature that surrounds me, the colors and perfumes that it bestows. My works contain repetitive elements that reflect the obsessive and serial character of contemporary life.

Eugenio Sgaravatti, Roman painter and artist. Born into a family boasting generations of producers of plants and seeds, after working for years in close contact with nature has begun to devote himself body and soul to his true vocation: painting 16 Roma | the Eternal City

tune r o f e e g a r u o C E FORTUNA CORAGGIO

text Veronica Sgaravatti

How did you come up with the idea of business for yourself? It started with a misfortune that became our greatest fortune. We found ourselves out of work. Some of our customers had grown fond of us. We decided to try going into business for ourselves. The space we had found was a bit too big and so we also created a small gym. What training have you had? I was born and raised in Trento, where I studied accounting and after graduation, I decided to go to a beautician school. It was what I liked. I’ve been traveling for work since I was 19 years old. I’ve worked in the wellness area in various beauty centers in Madonna di Campiglio, Ortisei, Abano Terme and Bagno Vignoni. What kind of customers do you have? A medium-high end clientele ranging from about 30 to 60 years and 30% of these are men. The gym is also widely used in combination with the personal trainer. Most of the gyms in the center don’t let you take single lessons with a personal trainer if you’re not registered. We, on the other hand, also get people who only want to do an hour of running or guided exercises. What gratifies you most about the work you do? Seeing the client’s body improve, succeeding in achieving a result and making a person happy and gratified. What is your relationship with Rome? It’s a magical place that lets you live in an open-air museum, especially in the historic center.

Giulia Bailoni is a girl from Trento who, together with her partner Sivia Bilotta, inaugurated Aestetica in May. It is an oasis of wellness: a special space where both basic and advanced aesthetics coexist in a location near Piazza Navona 18 Roma | the Eternal City

text Veronica Sgaravatti

How did it all begin? My family has had a tailoring shop for over thirty years. I studied at the European Institute of Design and at the same time studied Literature and Philosophy. I had the good fortune of apprenticing at Capucci, Lancetti, Gattinoni and at the same time was a Ready-towear consultant in Northern Italy. I can say that I had triple training: classics at university, Ready-to-wear thanks to IED, and high fashion and high artistic craftsmanship. What is the secret to your garments? My key word is lightness. I make all my clothes extremely light. One of my garments weighs a few grams; I use French tulle and amber effect organza for impalpable dresses that give the impression of a second skin. I have always enjoyed representing my dresses as dream-like garments. At the first Rome high fashion show, Donna sotto le Stelle, they defined me as the Peter Pan of Italian high fashion. Who do you dress? I dress many celebrities; among these, and with a special fondness, Barbara D’Urso, Claudia Gerini and Elena Sofia Ricci. How do you create your wedding gowns? I always try to customize according to who I have in front of me, so that the bride buys her identity, her way of being. What is elegance for you? It is the ease with which a woman always represents herself in the way she dresses, without ever showing off.

Franco Ciambella is an Italian designer of high fashion and wedding gowns known in Italy and abroad for his light impalpable garments. His atelier is in Civitavecchia, and here everything is sewn, cut and embroidered strictly by hand and made to measure 20 Roma | the Eternal City

Mi è sempre piaciuto rappresentare i miei abiti in chiave onirica.

Rino Barillari, The King of Paparazzi, tells his story of adventures, strokes of genius and wisdom

164 hospital stays, 11 broken ribs and more than 70 smashed cameras. Rino Barillari is a living legend, the world’s most famous ‘paparazzo’, and he’s still working. With a vast photographic archive of more than 600,000 images, from the 1950s to the present day and constantly growing, because his spirit is so feisty, his love of the profession so strong, that even now the King - as Federico Fellini called him - continues to hunt exclusives for Rome’s daily paper Il Messaggero. An exhibition at the MAXXI organised by the Istituto Luce (until 28 October), a book and a documentary written and directed by Giancarlo Scarchilli and Massimo Spano and entitled Rino Barillari. The King of Paparazzi give a comprehensive overview of his incredible career, from the Dolce Vita years to events that shaped the course of Italian history. How did your career as a photographer begin? I left Vibo Valentia, my hometown in Calabria, when I was 14. I wanted to discover the world, and I found it in the magical city of Rome, along with photography. It was a chance encounter. At the Trevi Fountain there were the so-called ‘scattini’, photographers who took pictures of tourists and persuaded them to buy them as souvenirs, while kids like me made a note of their hotel and went to deliver the envelopes in the evening. That’s how I got started. But you don’t get to be the King of Paparazzi by chance… One day one of the photographers lent me his camera, and, well, that day I earned more than he did, and soon I found myself taking photos too. In those days international celebrities used to come, especially in the evenings, so I started taking photos of them. After a while I realised you can earn more with VIPs than you can with tourists. Do you remember your first photo? My first important job was an American with a rubber dinghy and two top models. The photographer he’d hired hadn’t arrived, he saw me hanging around with my camera and asked me to take the photos. I handed over the roll of film and he gave me the money.

Ecco come ho iniziato.

Rome revealed through its surfaces: a story in pictures that becomes an unprecedented narration of eras, stories, customs and traditions .... The result is a wonderful fresco that has the colors and the material consistency of the Imperial City, where the vibrations of marble, the irregular tiles of the mosaics, the repetitiveness of frets and capitals seem to find their harmony in the “micro” as well as in the “macro” dimension, in the part as well as in the whole. You will certainly recognize the Circus Maximus, the Pantheon and the Portico of Octavia; Trajan’s Forum and the splendid mosaics of the Museum of Palazzo Massimo ... or perhaps not? Perhaps you will simply let yourself be carried away by these veinings, by these colored tiles capable of leading us back in time to the glories of the great emperors, the temples and the conquests. As if every fragment were able to preserve that great energy over the centuries and to release it if triggered by a glance. This is only one of the souls of Rome, its most ancient soul.

Imperial Patterns DETTAGLI IMPERIALI

text Francesca Lombardi photo Valentina Stefanelli

O forse no?!

Carolina Crescentini, from her passion for the film set to sleepless nights watching video clips Carolina Crescentini, dalla sua passione per il set alle notti insonni a guardare videoclip She’s leaving for Naples when we meet her. Her destination is Capri for the Prix Italia, where she’ll present the second season of I bastardi di Pizzofalcone, premiering on Rai 1 in October, picking back up in her role as Laura Piras alongside Alessandro Gassmann’s Giuseppe Lojacono. She’s filming a new movie with Fabrizio Costa in Turin, but she can’t tell us anything about it. She’s natural, ironic and professional, the same combination of qualities that she brought to the recent Venice Film Festival, where she was the only Italian judge for the “Luigi De Laurentiis” Award for a Debut Film. Where did your passion for cinema come from? I’ve always watched film after film and I love to write, so I decided to enrol in a Film History and Critique course. After various writing seminars, out of pure curiosity, I signed up for an acting class…I never would have done it! That’s where it all began. What was your experience like with transitioning from film school to working in front of the camera? In reality, I did my first film, H2Odio, while I was still in acting school. I didn’t have the time to realize what was happening to me. I was hit by a giant wave, which I later understood was doing something I love. Which director have you worked most closely with? Giuliano Montaldo. In addition to being a master and an excellent director, he’s a very special man. And other actors? Who have you connected with and who would you like to work with? I work well with Piefrancesco Favino, who I’ve made two movies with (The Entrepreneur in 2011 and A casa tutti bene, which came out last year, editor’s note), because just like me, he’s dedicated to his job and we understand each other very easily. I would also like to work with Elio Germano. Which role were you most enthusiastic about? The “non-role” par excellence: the actress Corinna Negri in Boris, (which earned her a Nastro d’Argento for Best Supporting Actress, editor’s note). The film was genius, the script incredibly funny, with an irony that definitely spoke to me.

Roma | the Eternal City 61

cover story

Carolina Crescentini in some scenes in ‘Boris’, ‘I bastardi di Pizzofalcone’ and ‘A casa tutti bene’ And what role would you like to play? I’m inspired by women who are determined and courageous but who are fragile and hide it. Perhaps this is because I personally oscillate between these two extremes. You’ve participated in a few videos, including with Baustelle and Sergio Cammariere. What’s your relationship with music like? Music has always been an essential element in my life. It’s my way of escaping the here and now while remaining in the same place, and videos are a true passion of mine; I watch so many of them, especially at night when I can’t sleep. What was the Venice Film Festival like this year? Incredible. I think being on the jury is the best way to experience the festival. Even though it takes a lot of work – because you have to watch five films a day starting early in the morning – you don’t have that same anxiety one might feel participating in the festival on the other side of the barricade. Plus, I love to watch movies. Do you like working more in films or television? There’s an attention in making films that television just doesn’t have. On the other hand, the serial nature of television allows you to delve into a character and really get to explore it. Right now, I would like to work in both. Talk to us about your Rome. I’m Roman, born and bred, and I proudly lay claim to my origins. I’ve lived in Trastevere for 12 years and don’t have any plans to leave. I consider it my little village, where time stands still, except for Saturday evening, when everyone comes here to party. I truly love my city, even if it’s made me a bit angry as of late because it’s not valorized properly. Your favourite places? I love to run along the river in the morning, when there are very few people. The Janiculum walls are also all mine; I often go there to read, write or eat take away. Villa Pamphilj, with its bistro, perfect for a picnic, is stupendous. But what I would recommend the most, even to Romans, is to step outside the box, be curious and open the door to a church you’ve never noticed before, go into a courtyard… by doing this, I once found myself in the middle of a Congolese mass in a church on via del Governo Vecchio. It was wonderful! What tips do you have for a proper Roman aperitivo? Go to Coffee Pot in Trastevere, or Na Cosetta in Pigneto, where there’s often live music. A classic is Bar del Fico, where it’s better to go a bit early so you can have an aperitivo together with the old men playing chess. There are also Oasi della Birra and Angelina in Testaccio. 62 Roma | the Eternal City

Alessandro D’Ambrosi, Roman actor, director and screenwriter, recently appeared on Sky Fox with ‘Romolo + Giuly’ (ph. Marzia Ferrone) 64 Roma | the Eternal City

movie interview

The eternal struggle L’ETERNA LOTTA text Veronica Sgaravatti

Alessandro D’Ambrosi, not only an actor, but also a sharp commentator on the world today Non solo attore, ma anche acuto interprete della realtà di oggi Alessandro D’Ambrosi is a Roman actor who has also experimented with photography, writing and directing. He grew up in the EUR neighborhood of Rome, and we have seen him on television as the protagonist of the Italian series Romolo + Giuly, broadcast on Sky Fox. What sort of preparation have you received? I graduated from the Massimiliano Massimo classical lyceum and I started working as an actor right afterwards. When I was 18, I presented a program for children in RAI for three years, which was good practice; then a lot of theater. I’ve always liked to tell stories: the origin of my love for scriptwriting and directing. I directed a short film, Buffet, together with Santa De Santis and now, still together, we are working on our first feature film. How was this passion born? I have always been afraid of death and with this kind of work it seems possible to overcome this limit; as an actor, living other people’s lives, personifying other realities, and also as a director, inventing other situations. This work is my therapy, my self-cure. What would advice to a person who wants to undertake this work? It is a job that subjects you to many privations; it must be a need. You have to have a lot of courage and patience, but also always defend your childlike freedom. It is essential to maintain a taste for play. Always facing everything with extreme seriousness. What led to the creation of the Romolo + Giuly series? It was born from the teamwork of three friends: Giulio Carrieri (screenwriter), Michele Bertini, (director) and myself, two and a half years ago. Together we wrote the series. In 2016, we created an 11-minute web teaser that had millions of views; so then we developed the idea, at first only by playing on the rivalry between Northern Rome and Southern Rome, then even extending it to Milan, Naples and to all of Italy. We have worked, in a satirical manner, on the theme of diversity and useless divisions between characters who are apparently different but, actually, profoundly close. Romolo + Giuly - clearly a Shakespearean transposition - are an example of how it is possible to be together even if one loves Amatriciana and the other sushi.

Roma | the Eternal City 65

Guenda Goria, 28, actress, director, producer and pianist graduated from the Milan Conservatory. She lives in Rome (ph. Marcello Norberth) 66 Roma | the Eternal City

theatre interview

I pursue my passions INSEGUO LE MIE PASSIONI text Teresa Favi

Actress Guenda Goria tells her story as she takes us through her city L’attrice Guenda Goria si racconta portandoci per mano nella sua città

Versatile and determined, Guenda Goria is an artist devoted to ongoing research and experimentation. A first-rate pianist, actress and director- she has worked with great masters such as Matteo Garrone, Pupi Avati, Gianfranco Pannone, Gerardo Placido, the Manetti Bross- and the daughter of anchorwoman Maria Teresa Ruta and sports journalist Amedeo Goria, Guenda has always relied on her own strength, working her way up through hard work. What is the greatest satisfaction you gained from your way of being? The successful show, Pianista Perfetta, in which I played the role of Clara Schumann, was my greatest joy. A role customized to display my gift for classical music, which marked my youth years, as well as my passion for the theatre. What is the best aspect of your job? Being able to turn an idea into something real. What do you have in store for us in the upcoming months? A film set in the Royal Palace of Caserta, called L’ amore vero by Paolo Consorti, a visual artist and film director, and the play Cognate by Eric Assous, co-starring Anna Valle and directed by Piergiorgio Piccoli. We will be touring with the show from late October. What are your top five favorite places in Rome? The Pantheon and Piazza della Rotonda, which I discovered when I was rehearsing at the magnificent Theatre of Palazzo Santa Chiara, and then the Turtle Fountain in Piazza Mattei. As for restaurants, well, let’s see…. I like Trilussa, traditional Roman cuisine served in a frying pan, the Zodiaco with its breathtaking view of Rome’s rooftops, and Dieciventitrenta, Amatriciana-style cuisine in the Prati area. What theatres in Rome do you keep an eye open for? I am mostly intrigued by original and contemporary plays. From the Teatro Eliseo to the Barnum Seminteatro in the Garbatella district, which makes some daring choices. I adore the Teatro della Cometa. When will you be performing in Rome? In April, at the beautiful Villa Torlonia in the Pianista perfetta show.

Roma | the Eternal City 67

Totò in Rome TOTÒ A ROMA

text Antonello de Curtis e Gianluca Tenti photo Massimo Sestini The story of Totò and his relationship with the Eternal City told in a new book In un libro la storia di Totò e la sua relazione con la Città eterna

My grandfather Totò loved Rome deeply. Rome the capital, naturally. The Eternal City. For him Rome was professional life, it was acclaim and success, the dream and the everyday. Two parallel worlds. Because there was the public Totò. But there was also the private one. And the Totò Metà-Fisico, as we wrote in the book published by Gruppo Editoriale and illustrated by the photos of Massimo Sestini, the photo-journalist who shares with the legendary Rino Barillari the title of absolute master of the shot. No, Gianluca isn’t Totò’s grandson. He’s his son, as my mother Liliana told him, because at the end of the day we’re all Totò’s children. In spite of everything. But back to his relationship with Rome. When I was born, I made the peace between my grandfather and my mother, as I write in a book (also with Gianluca Tenti) entitled I tre nonni, which we’ll publish sooner or later. Because there are many unknown aspects of il Principe that deserve to be known. I remember my grandfather at home in Via Parioli. My grandfather with film stars, directors, the small-but-great Court of Miracles who jostled to sit at his side. I could hardly believe the list of important names. I remember Alberto Sordi, Nino Manfredi, Walter Pidgeon, Steno, Monicelli. And women, so many women. Gorgeous women. And all in love with grandfather. But dinnertime wasn’t easy at Totò’s. It required a mixture of respect and reverence. Although he did everything he could to limit such occasions, because really he liked his privacy. Darkness. And he’d have his films screened at home. As a child, I used to try and disturb him as little as possible; one day he said to me: “Remember you’re a count!” I didn’t understand then, but now I do. Why do I write these things? Because I believe the public the reader - has the right to know these less talked and written-about parts of his life too. Episodes that are apparently insignificant, but are actually full of merit and which perhaps

A prescindere. Ricordo mio nonno a casa, in via Parioli. Ricordo Alberto Sordi, Nino Manfredi, Walter Pidgeon, Steno, Monicelli. Donne, tante donne. Belle, bellissime. Firenze | made in Tuscany 69

Between 2014 and 2015 the Gallery opened a pop-up space in Manhattan, a project halfway between a gallery and a residence, which continued with the opening of a second location in Lisbon, with the goal of intertwining trajectories and creating networks between cities and artist communities. Since 2000, not far from Piazza di Pietra, at number 17 of Via dei Prefetti 9, there is Magazzino, whose spaces separated by a courtyard into two distinct architectural bodies have been temporarily transformed by Los Angeles-based Chinese artist Yan Xing – on display from September 28 – in a monumental scale environment, an uncanny place that evokes the architecture of the Fascist period. Also in this case the space itself is often the starting point for the interventions of the artists represented by the Gallery, including the Italians Massimo Bartolini, Alberto Garutti, Elisabetta Benassi and Alessandro Piangiamore, and foreigners such as Jan Fabre and Mircea Cantor. You can find these galleries when visiting the largest international fairs such as Frieze, Art Basel or MiArt and in the biggest museums in the world, for example Tate, Kunsthalle Basel, Palais de Tokyo, there are the works of some artists we found in these spaces. The professional careers of many artists started in this city, thanks to the support of its galleries and collectors. Patronage is indeed a distinctive and ancient trait of Rome. It is of little wonder then that, in recent times, this inclination has led to the creation of many different foundations that, although supported by private individuals, act as if they were public institutions,

A detail of the fountain in Piazza Trilussa 102 Roma | the Eternal City

Piazza Trilussa and its staircase

The beauty of Trastevere lies in its narrow streets, sounds, smells and the many restaurants where you can taste typical Roman dishes, but also in the street artists who perform for tourists and locals. Our itinerary begins from Piazza Trilussa, overlooking Lungotevere Raffaello Sanzio. This square is dedicated to the famous poet who wrote in Roman dialect and lived and died in Trastevere. Its staircase offers space to sit in the shade and cool off with water from the fountain, commissioned by Pope Paul V. From here go towards Via della Lungara, a road built in the 16th century to link Trastevere to the town. From here you go through Porta Settimiana, built in 1498 by Pope Alexander VI above a small passage of the Aurelian walls. On this street you immediately come across Palazzo Corsini, today home to the Lincean Academy and the National Gallery of Ancient Art. The works in the Gallery come mostly from the Corsini family’s collection and date from the 16th and 17th centuries. One of the most important paintings here, housed in Room 7, is that of St. John the Baptist by Caravaggio. Behind Palazzo Corsini are the Botanical Gardens, formerly the private garden of the Palazzo, which today, in its 12 hectares, houses more than 8000 species of plants. Continuing along Via della Lungara we can stop in front of Villa Farnesina, one of the first Renaissance villas, built between 1508 and 1511 for the rich papal banker Agostino Chigi and acquired in 1577 by Cardinal Alessandro Farnese. The most famous frescoes are those of Raphael

The church, dedicated to Saint Francis, today has a Baroque style dating back to1680 and inside has one of the finest works by Bernini: the Ecstasy of the Blessed Ludovica Albertoni. The Ecstasy of the Blessed is one of the most beautiful works of Bernini, executed in 1674, and sister Ludovica, a nun of the Poor Clares, is represented while reclining on an embroidered bed in marble, in the act of Christian rapture, with her eyes closed and mouth open. The east side of Viale Trastevere can be said to be the area of the district that is a little more secluded but equally rich with hidden treasures. Going along Via Anicia, towards Lungotevere we can stop in front of the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, where the remains of the patron saint of music lie. The ninth-century basilica, was built over an earlier fifth-century church which was in turn built on the house where it is believed that the saint was martyred in 230. In addition to the sculpture by Maderno, depicting the saint, which is located under the altar, the work that arouses admiration is the 13th-century fresco by Pietro Cavallini depicting the Last Judgment in the choir of the monks. There are still many more churches and you can spend another two fun, carefree house losing yourself among the alleyways where breathtaking attic houses, coexist with clothes hung out to dry in the sun and Trastevere locals mix with new residents and tourists from all over of the world.

A Corner of Paradise UN ANGOLO DI PARADISO text Teresa Favi

Alessia Antinori’s Roman refuge. An organic estate on the edge of the city Il rifugio romano di Alessia Antinori. Una bio-fattoria alle porte di Roma

Alessia Antinori, vice president of the Marchesi Antinori winery, is the youngest of Piero Antinori’s three daughters. We’re talking about one of the oldest families in the winemaking world, currently in its 26th generation “and about to reach the 27th”. Alessia was born in Lausanne and grew up in the family home in Florence; she officially joined the family firm after completing a degree in Viticulture and Oenology at the University of Milan. In Rome she lives in Palazzo Pecci Blunt, and for several years now she has been working full-time at Fattoria di Fiorano, a 120-hectare organic estate inherited from her mother’s side of the family and located just outside Rome on the Appian Way. Grape varieties grown here are Cabernet, Merlot and Sémillon, left to Alessia and her sisters Albiera and Allegra by their grandfather Alberico Boncompagni Ludovisi. Here Alessia Antinori has returned to her first and greatest passion, winemaking. What’s the best thing about your work? Nature and the people surrounding it. What does Fattoria di Fiorano mean to you? It’s my passion. And my grandfather’s. He was a Roman prince who could have done many other things with his life, but he was passionate about the land and about this estate. I still remember him every day; I wear his tweed jacket on the tractor. What was his legacy here at Fiorano? The vines he planted in the 1950s: Merlot, Cabernet and Sémillon. He was the first grower in Rome, and one of the first in Italy, to experiment with French grape varieties. What’s more, he believed in organic farming. In the 60s and 70s he was bold and pioneering in his resistance to the use of chemicals and fungicides. He was adamant about this, and the result is that the estate has been orga114 Roma | the Eternal City

Negli anni Sessanta e Settanta resistette, in maniera pionieristica e coraggiosa, all’impiego di prodotti chimici e anticrittogamici.

Titanic challenges SFIDE TITANICHE text Virginia Mammoli

Hotel de Russie and its exceptional personal trainer: Danilo Palmucci, a Triathlon legend L’Hotel de Russie e il suo personal trainer d’eccezione: Danilo Palmucci, leggenda del triathlon Being comfortable with yourself and your body is a priority even when travelling. For this reason, the exclusive Hotel de Russie places a lot of emphasis on its wellness amenities. And we’re not just talking about the elegant spa, with its signature treatments, but also the fitness area, overseen by the exceptional ironman Danilo Palmucci. A Triathlon legend, he boasts 300 races and 185 wins, including two gold medals at the ITU World Triathlon Grand Final Gold Coast 2018, held in Australia in September. An athlete by nature, he was “born 200 metres from the Colosseum,” and for more than 10 years, he’s dedicated himself to the role of personal trainer, combining his professional sports skills and his in-depth knowledge of the city. In addition to training sessions in the hotel gym, which vaunts state-of-the-art Technogym equipment, Palmucci also organizes Art Running and Art Biking, special itineraries to discover the Eternal City and the wonderful surrounding countryside. How do you create your itineraries for hotel guests? For running, we have three set itineraries, during which we visit iconic places like the park at the Villa Borghese, the Colosseum, the ghetto and the Pantheon. They’re offered in the early morning when the city is still at the height of its beauty. But I often create tailored itineraries that match the guest’s interests and physical capabilities. Rome is my gym – I know the hours of the churches, the doormen at historic palaces – so I’m able to show a side of the city that many would never get to know. The perfect place to ride a bike in the city is the park at the Villa Doria Pamphilj, nearly as large as Central Park, but with more artistic depth to it. On two wheels, guests can also access sites beyond the city centre, like the Roman Castles area or the places between Bracciano and Civitavecchia. Your training philosophy? We’re a wellness area, the goal is to feel good. This doesn’t mean pushing your body to its limits, as professional athletes often do… that’s not me. If I can still reach these goals at 55 years old, sure, I have my good genes to thank, but it’s also because I maintain a healthy lifestyle and adhere to a non-extreme but continuous

The hotel’s fitness centre vaunts state-of-the-art Technogym equipment training regime. I’m convinced that this is a successful philosophy and I try to demonstrate it with facts. How did your career in sports begin? Swimming when I was five years old. Not long after, I was an Italian champion, and at 9 years old, a world champion, coming in fifth. And your passion for Triathlons? It’s still a little-known discipline, but to win a medal is the dream of all true athletes. It’s a titanic challenge – 3,800 metres swimming, 180 km by bike, 42 km running – and you win only one. It’s precisely because we’re well-aware of how monumental it is that we accept every result with pride and celebrate the last ones to arrive more than the first ones, because those are the people who struggled the most. What’s your winning strategy? Establish goals year after year. Focus on the race so there won’t be any need to recover from unexpected situations and that everything is already processed in the mind and body. Your next goal? The championship in Nice. It’s the largest Triathlon venue in Europe and it will be the most important race in the world that year. It’s the best place for those like me who want to leave their mark on the history of the Triathlon. Did you reward yourself with some well-deserved rest after the race in Australia? Back home from Australia, I wanted stay with my family, my wife and sons, to recharge before taking on a new challenge. Another good thing about Nice is that I can bring my family. Knowing that I’ll see them in the crowd during the race is a wonderful thing. Your dream? Race a world championship in my country. 120 Roma | the Eternal City

Unique experience ESPERIENZA UNICA text Veronica Sgaravatti

Style and research: the secrets of Zuma Roma, one of the chicest places in the city Stile e ricerca: i segreti di Zuma Roma, uno dei posti più chic in città

Ivano Guastella is the general manager of Zuma Roma, one of the city’s most glamorous and refined restaurants. We met him in the restaurant, hosted in the splendid setting of Palazzo Fendi, and that in just two years has imposed itself on Rome as one of the best and most fashionable eateries in the city, offering a unique sensorial experience for palates and eyes. Palazzo Fendi overlooks Piazza Goldoni, where there is the beautiful sculpture by Giuseppe Penone, but the entrance to the restaurant is in Via Fontanella Borghese, where an elevator takes us to the fourth floor. A corridor of bamboo canes and Japanese ceramic tiles introduces us to the main dining room. We have the good fortune to dine with the director, who explains the concept of sharing dishes and welcomes us with an invitation to taste a wonderful business lunch, a quicker and easier meal than dinner, where it is possible to dine even without an advance reservation which is, instead, necessary for dinner. In just a few years, Zuma has become a reference point and meeting place for the city. What are the strengths of Zuma? The team that oversaw the opening and the brand are the two main elements that have characterized its success to date. But also the incredible partnership with the Maison Fendi that has strengthened our reputation in the city. Is it a lively place functioning at lunchtime, for aperitifs and for dinner? We are proud and also fortunate to be able to say that they all function very well. To be honest, it was not that way at the beginning; lunch and aperitifs became popular more gradually. How does your clientele change at different times of the day? There are no big differences in our clientele between lunch and dinner, but rather on the terrace, on the fifth floor, especially at aperitif time. What are Zuma’s signature dishes? Miso marinated black cod wrapped in hoba leaf, spicy beef tenderloin with sesame seeds, Iberian pork with yuzu kosho and truffle sauce, seabass with truffle oil and salmon roe, salmon seared with lime, shiso and soy sauce.

Autumn dining L’AUTUNNO IN TAVOLA text Gabrielle Bolzoni

Artichokes, mushrooms and truffles, veritable musts in Roman cuisine. The best places to eat them

Carciofi, funghi e tartufo, veri must della cucina romana. I migliori indirizzi dove mangiarli

Autumn has the colors and the taste of artichokes, mushrooms and truffles: a palette of flavors opens with the pleasantly bitter notes of artichokes, the most popular vegetables in Roman, but also Italian, cuisine. Good cooked or raw - who has never tried them in pinzimonio, that is raw, dipped in newly-pressed olive oil? As for mushrooms, there are many varieties used in our cuisine, even if the most noble and tasty are the porcini, with firm and compact flesh and an unmistakable scent; versatile in the kitchen, they accompany every course perfectly and can be served raw, cooked, fried and stewed. The truffle, considered the king of mushrooms, is by far the most prized food of this season. Black truffles are often used for seasoning first courses, while the white truffle is a real rarity, and an Alba white truffle can cost nine thousand euro per kilo. But this delicacy must be tasted at least once in a lifetime because it guarantees an unforgettable olfactory experience which delights the palate and soul. Ideally, if we were to accompany you for a typical autumn dinner, we would suggest starting with a Roman-style artichoke, that is, stewed (or alla giudia, that is, fried, Jewish-style), and to continue with fettuccine with black truffles and finish with sliced grilled steak with porcini mushrooms. Trying is believing ... Near Via Veneto there is the historic Tuscan restaurant Tullio, where you can enjoy the best ovoli (Caesar’s mushrooms), porcini and truffles in an intimate and refined setting. Via di S. Nicola da Tolentino 26, tel. 06 4745560, wwwtullioristorante.it Behind Piazza di Spagna, Hostaria da Pietro offers traditional dishes in an informal and cheerful atmosphere. Authentic Roman-style artichokes, fettuccine with artichokes and pecorino cheese or porcini mushrooms, risotto or ravioli with white truffles, beef carpaccio and eggs with black truffles.
