CAPTURING THE SOUL
CAMILLA ALIBRANDI, A PHOTOGRAPHER THAT LOVES AESTHETICS AND ARCHITECTURE, FOTOGRAFA E STYLIST APPASSIONATA DI ESTETICA E ARCHITETTURA text Veronica Sgaravatti
What kind of training did you have? I studied architecture and then did two Masters degrees in Rome at the Academy of Fashion and Costume, one in fashion journalism and the history of Costume and another specializing in accessories: shoes and bags. I’m convinced that the saying “the clothes don’t make the man” isn’t true. When people look at you, they immediately get a first impression of you. What does photography mean to you? Photography has the responsibility of telling a story and describing a person also through a light, color and focus. I subscribe to the idea that it takes very little to recount a lot: “Less is More.” I like the idea of blending aesthetics with a person’s ethics and being able to capture characteristics that even the people themselves sometimes don’t see in themselves. Who did your passion for photography come from? My father, also an architect, photographer and director. When I was 12, he gave me my first camera and at 15 an enlarger and dark room and taught me to develop my own photos. Saturday mornings, we used to sit down with a glass of orange juice and he patiently taught me the secrets of the trade. What do you really love? I love sports – I’ve also become a swimming and yoga instructor because I’m convinced that teaching helps us to grow - but above all contemporary art and cinema.
Sposo l’idea che basta poco per raccontare molto: “Less is More”.
I LIKE THE IDEA OF BLENDING AESTHETICS WITH A PERSON’S ETHICS TO CAPTURE THE SOUL 16

LINEAR AND TACTILE
MONICA HELL IS A FURNITURE DESIGNER. NOW SHE HAS ALSO HER OWN LINE OF BAGS. SI OCCUPA DELLA PROGETTAZIONE DI MOBILI. HA FIRMATO ANCHE UNA SUA LINEA DI BORSE. text Veronica Sgaravatti
How did this line of work begin? Everything stems from a great passion passed on to me by my father. When I was a child, every ten years he had our home renovated by architects who systematically transformed it. This influenced both my choice of studies and my work. I began working in architectural studios and supervising construction sites. Then, I continued alone, always with renovations and furnishings. By then, I knew all the artisans and decorators who could be of use to me. When did you make the first piece of furniture? For my own house, about ten years ago. The first piece was in leather. Then a friend of mine with a furniture shop encouraged me to make other pieces that she immediately sold. So I started a business with my decorator Marzia Sansonetti Sauve and now I handle the design part and she manages the research of materials. What makes your furniture unique? We use materials such as rope, cork and acrylic paste to give volume to the leathers and create a three-dimensional effect in the decorations. Our furniture is linear and material at the same time. How much later did you start your line of bags? Two years later, almost eight years ago. I make a maximum of 200 bags a year, all made in Rome. First the customer chooses the leather and the design and 15 days later, they have their bag. I only sell from my showroom in Parioli.

A STONE’S THROW FROM VIA VENETO GUIDO CITERNI AND HIS RESTAURANT FIORE: GOOD, HEALTHY, BEAUTIFUL DISHES GUIDO CITERNI E IL RISTORANTE FIORE: PIATTI BUONI, SANI E BELLISSIMI text Veronica Sgaravatti
How did the idea of opening a Flexiterian restaurant come about? We opened this restaurant after finding out that there was a lack of this niche of restaurant in Rome. Flexitarian is derived from flexible, a cuisine that favors products of vegetable origin, but without giving up meat and fish completely. What are your strong points? The three adjectives we combined to develop this new project are: healthy, tasty and Italian. We use the highest quality basic ingredients and are constantly looking for the freshest, most wholesome and organic products. Our menu changes monthly, depending on which ingredients are in season. Why the name Fiore? Initially it was called Fiore, Crudo e Vapore (Flower, Raw and Steamed), then we shortened it to one word. Which dish characterizes you the most? Definitely a dish that characterizes us a lot are the steamed baskets that can be vegetables, rice, meat and fish. We steam much of our food which allows us to eliminate saturated fats and ensure a high digestibility of our dishes, reducing calories and preserving the flavors of the foods intact. How important is the location for the restaurant’s success? Fundamental: during the day it’s an area of offices and so people pour in because it’s the only restaurant in the area that’s a bit different. In the evening, it’s convenient thanks to the availability of parking.

ONORATO MANCINI, MASTER FRAME-MAKER FOR OVER 50 YEARS. THE ART OF VALORIZING ART ARTIGIANO E MAESTRO CORNICIAIO DA OLTRE 50 ANNI. L’ARTE DI VALORIZZARE L’ARTE text Virginia Mammoli
Are frames a family tradition or a personal passion? A personal passion, that has given rise to a family tradition. In 1965 I attended the school of arts and crafts in Rome and from there, I went on to enter the workshop of my teacher Giuliano Palla. After years spent gaining experience, I opened my own workshop in Vicolo della Campana, which this year celebrates its 50th anniversary. My daughter Roberta and my son Paolo, who have my same love for craftsmanship, have been working with me for 10 years now. What fascinates you most about this craft? That would be seeing the added value that our experience can give to even the most modest artwork, enhancing it to the maximum. And the most delicate phase in the creation of a frame? Precision in the cutting of corners and glass is crucial, as these are very delicate and dangerous operations. The most precious painting for which you have created a frame? A Leonardo da Vinci painting for the Capitoline Museums. A real accomplishment. The most important teachings you have passed on to your children? Respect for the client, punctuality and precision in the execution of every work. They chose this work for themselves. They are excellent craftsmen and there is no better satisfaction for me than seeing the future of this workshop in them. Your Rome, in 3 places dear to your heart. The Colosseum, my arts and crafts school was near it; Piazza Navona, that I cross every day to go to work and the Tiber river, where every day I walk my dog Lapo, the our mascot.
THE MOST FASCINATING THING IS SEEING THE ADDED VALUE THAT OUR EXPERIENCE CAN GIVE TO THE ARTWORKS 22

26 BUILDINGS AND 17 VILLAS BETWEEN PIAZZA BUENOS AIRES AND VIA TAGLIAMENTO 26 PALAZZINE E 17 VILLINI TRA PIAZZA BUENOS AIRES E VIA TAGLIAMENTO Located in the heart of Rome, just a few kilometers from the historic center, is one of the most characteristic neighborhoods in the city. Not actually a neighborhood, but a corner of Rome made up of a complex of buildings located in the larger Trieste district, a bizarre mix of Art Nouveau and Art Deco, with infiltrations of Greek, Gothic, Baroque and even medieval art: we are talking about Coppedè. Pleasant streets for a walk, especially if you have children and want them to discover absolutely different places, a fascinating and surreal route: 26 buildings and 17 villas with Tuscan turrets, Moorish arches, animalesque figures in the frescoed facades and gardens with palm trees, located between the Salaria and Nomentana districts and more precisely, between Piazza Buenos Aires and Via Tagliamento. The group of buildings, an incredible blend of architectural styles, steep the visitor in the opulent and even slightly fictitious atmosphere of the early 1900s. The neighborhood was designed and built entirely by the eclectic Florentine architect Gino Coppedè between 1913 and 1926. The main entrance to the area, from the Via Tagliamento side, is a large lavishly decorated arch, with a grand wrought iron chandelier, and connects the two ambassadors’ palaces. Before the arch, which leads to Piazza Mincio - the heart of the district - is a niche with a statue of a Madonna and Child. In the center of the piazza is the Fontana delle Rane, Fountain of the Frogs, built in 1924 and consisting of a central basin, with four pairs of figures, each of which supports a shell on which there is a frog from which water gushes into the pool and, from a second pool, about two meters in height, from another eight frogs. The fountain, inspired by the turtle fountain in the Jewish ghetto, is also known for the night that the Beatles took a bath in it fully clothed after their
BERNINI’S ROME
SCULPTURES THAT MARKED THE 17TH CENTURY IN THE ETERNAL CITY LA CITTÀ IMPERIALE DELLO SCULTURE CHE HA SEGNATO IL ‘600 text Francesca Lombardi photo Valentina Stefanelli
Favored by the pope, the papal court and its noble families of the time, Bernini was probably the artist who knew best how to interpret natural form at a time when men were seeking to reconcile two aspects of existence, that of the earthly and the spiritual, that of sensuality and devotion to God. These pages explore the Rome of Bernini’s time: Bernini’s early sculptures that hark back to the paganist and sensual tones of antiquity, and the shift towards Christianity in his mature works, interpreting the religious drives and erotic aspects of Mysticism in the 1600s.

Amato dai Papi e dalla corte pontificia come dalle grandi famiglie nobili, Bernini nelle sue sculture giovanili, resuscita l’antichità pagana e sensuale.

A PASSION FOR WESTERNS MARCO GIALLINI. THE GREAT ROMAN ACTOR DISCUSSES MEMORIES, FRIENDSHIPS AND SECRET DREAMS IL GRANDE ATTORE ROMANO TRA RICORDI, AMICIZIE E INASPETTATI SOGNI NEL CASSETTO text Virginia Mammoli
He is one of the most popular faces of Italian cinema. His unmistakable voice sounds extremely familiar. So, when you first talk to him, it feels like you’ve always known him, although he enjoys wrong-footing you with his delightfully irreverent sense of humor and well-known digressions. Marco Giallini, a born-and-bred Roman. His career to date includes over 50 films, such as ACAB - All Cops Are Bastards with Pierfrancesco Favino, Tutta colpa di Freud and Perfetti Sconosciuti by Paolo Genovese, Beata ignoranza with Alessandro Gassmann and Domani è un altro giorno with Valerio Mastandrea, released in February. He will soon be back on the big screen starring in Villetta con ospiti by Ivano De Matteo, a film noir with seven leading characters, as many as the deadly sins. Your father was a great cinema buff. Did you become an actor thanks to him? There’s a little bit of an actor in all of us, but doing it from the heart, to make people absorb your emotions is another thing entirely, that’s when you’re a real actor, and you know it. My father’s passion, however, spurred me on. He was a factory worker, he sometimes mispronounced the names, but he understood cinema. He enjoyed watching French films, he talked about Truffaut and drove me to the movie sets on his motorbike. Once there was this war film set, I don’t remember the title, but I believe Gina Lollobrigida was starring in it, she was not a young girl, but still very “Gina”. You started off as a whitewasher and you sold drinks. When did you realize that your future was in acting? I think it’s funny that everyone points out that I worked as a whitewasher. Actually, as strange as it sounds, it was only natural for me. I was born in a family of factory workers and we all had to work at a certain point in life, plain and simple. But I still dreamt of becoming a musician or an actor. I realized that my future was in acting when I had the proof that I could do it and do it - let’s say - well, I don’t want to exaggerate. In Domani è un altro giorno, you are co-starring with your dear friend Valerio Mastandrea. When did you first meet? It’s not like we’re engaged (he laughs). Anyway, we were in a movie theatre watching Messico e nuvole by Angelo Orlando.
Marco Giallini, romano doc.

COVER STORY
“MOST OF ALL, I WOULD LOVE TO PLAY IN A WESTERN, I DO HAVE THE RIGHT FACE” “PIÙ DI TUTTO MI PIACEREBBE FARE UN WESTERN, AVREI ANCHE LA FACCIA ADATTA” It was the year 1994, 25 years ago. This film we did together is great, you cry, you laugh, and we had fun working together again, because we know each other so well. I know exactly what he is about to say when I improvise. What can you tell us about Villetta con ospiti by De Matteo? I can say that this is another great film. I think that Ivano is one out of the three-four best film directors I’ve ever worked with. I’ve known him for years, but I was surprised by how determined he is on the set, you can see his “biceps swelling”. He would love to hear me say this. You’ve played diametrically opposed characters throughout your career. What is your favorite? The positive ones. Although in Ivano’s film I’m very negative, probably the most negative character of my life. But I enjoy testing my ability to play such difficult roles. Roles like those in Tutta colpa di Freud and Perfetti sconosciuti make women fall in love with me, and then they all “stalk” me outside my home (he laughs). You are what you do, it’s obvious. What kind of film would you like to play in? I really like swashbuckler films and, in general, period movies. But most of all, I would love to play in a Western, I do have the right face. If you think of it, Westerns were all the rage in the seventies. We taught the Americans to do Westerns: Silverado, and even Unforgiven by Clint Eastwood. Sergio Leone, a Roman from Trastevere, taught the Americans to do Westerns. How incredible is that? Or at least in a certain way, his way. As an actor, cinema expert and a Roman, what films would you recommend to someone who is not familiar with Rome? We All Loved Each Other So Much by Ettore Scola and Big Deal on Madonna Street by Mario Monicelli, and also Pasolini’s films or Rossellini’s Rome, Open City. But I guess it depends on what you want to tell about Rome, which is not only Sordi’s Rome or Monicelli’s poor suburbs where the working class used to live, which are today’s downtown neighborhoods. “Rome is not Rome anymore”, people said back in the sixties, let alone nowadays, but this applies to all cities. Sorry, I’m wandering off the point, I do it often. It’s common knowledge that another passion of yours, in addition to rock music, is motorcycling. Let’s go for a ride, where? I don’t care where, I just drive fast. I get on my motorbike and speed up. Because I’m the romantic type and because, as Steve McQueen used to say, “they won’t catch me that way”.
A lui piacerebbe come definizione. Abbiamo insegnato agli americani a fare i film western. Capisci?

Amii Stewart, disco and soul famous singer, she was born in Washington but has been living in Rome since the fisrt-1990s
MUSIC INTERVIEW
MY FREE SINGING
WE SPOKE WITH AMII STEWART, THE GREAT SOUL SINGER WHO CHOSE ITALY HAS HER SECOND HOME LA GRANDE VOCE SOUL HA SCELTO L’ITALIA COME SECONDA PATRIA E SI RACCONTA text Teresa Favi
Amii Stewart, raised in America and beloved in Italy for her impressive soul music, was the queen of disco in the 1970s: she became famous with her single Knock on Wood, selling eight million copies worldwide. Living in Italy since 1990, Amii splits her time between Rome and Porto Cervo. The singer chose to explore not one but one hundred different paths in the world of entertainment and music, collaborating with artists like Morricone, Moroder, Piovani, Mike Francis and Gianni Morandi. She has recently staged at the Opera di Roma to perform Nicola Piovani’s La Pietà, a piece for two female voices (soul and soprano), with an orchestra and the splendid voice of Gigi Proietti. How did you meet Nicola Piovani? Nicola and I met about 20 years ago by chance at a small restaurant in Testaccio, called Felice, where we both went out of our love for good Roman cuisine. Nicola designed my part based on my voice, and the piece was presented for the first time in the cathedral in Orvieto in 1999. What was your reaction when Piovani sought you out to bring the piece to the stage again? My first thought was “I can’t do it like I did then”. Voices change over time, both physiologically and due to the emotional experiences we each live through. I said to him, “If you allow me to do this with the emotion and changes that these 20 years have brought, I can try it,” but I was still nervous. Then, one evening, I received a beautiful text message: my deeper, richer voice was the right one for this second act. I was touched. And what is it like working with Gigi Proietti? Gigi is a great master and an incredible person. During rehearsals, he has the ability to make everyone feel comfortable and to lighten up even the most negative moments.

THE MAN OF THE FUTURE
THE SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE HIGHLIGHTS THE CAREER OF LEONARDO DA VINCI, ALLE SCUDERIE DEL QUIRINALE IL PERCORSO CHE RACCONTA LEONARDO DA VINCI text Francesca Lombardi
Ten masterful drawings from the Ambrosiana, Leonardo’s most important writings and the Codex Atlanticus go on display alongside the priceless original gates installed in the Naviglio di San Marco canal, which remained in use until 1929. These are some of the main objects on display in the exhibition dedicated to Leonardo da Vinci at the Scuderie del Quirinale, running until June 30. In addition to original pieces from Leonardo’s lifetime, visitors can discover historic models from the Museo della Scienza e della Tecnologia, including objects that have not been on display in decades and some of which have recently been restored, all of which are considered incredibly important for understanding Leonardo’s genius. The exhibition, curated by Claudio Giorgione, explores the technical and humanistic subjects Leonardo tackled throughout his career, like the development of machinery for large construction sites, the use of drawing and perspective as tools for knowledge, the art of war – both traditional and innovative – designs for “imaginary” contraptions like flying machines, reflections on the ideal city and studies for waterways. Special events and workshops add to this major exhibition: adults and children alike can test their skills with fresco painting and perspective drawing, as well as experiment with techniques for building machinery and writing Leonardo-style calligraphy. In addition to classes and workshops held directly inside the exhibition at the Scuderie del Quirinale, the city of Rome will become a stage in its own right thanks to the initiative Leonardo in città (Leonardo in the city), a rich series of events and in-depth talks about Leonardo and his genius. Biblioteca Angelica and Teatro Argentina are just a few of the institutions that will host these commemorative events dedicated to the master Leonardo da Vinci.

INTERVIEW MUSIC
FLUID ENERGY SIR ANTONIO PAPPANO DIRECTOR OF SANTA CECILIA, SPEAKS TO US ABOUT HIS LINK WITH THE CAPITAL IL DIRETTORE DI SANTA CECILIA RACCONTA IL SUO RAPPORTO CON LA CAPITALE text Teresa Favi
At the helm of the Orchestra Nazionale di Santa Cecilia since 2005, Antonio Pappano divides his time between Rome and London, where he also directs the Royal Opera House. Knighted for his services to music, Pappano was raised in New York by Italian parents who first emigrated from the province of Benevento to Epping, UK, where the future director was born. He worked for several years as Daniel Baremboim’s assistant before becoming one of the top orchestra directors of our time, beloved not only by the public but also by the musicians themselves. What does it mean to direct an orchestra? Being an orchestra director means always being surrounded by a world of colour and insane energy. It’s a privilege, I can’t describe it any other way; it’s a very enviable position. But it’s a big responsibility to give direction to all this energy. The key ingredient? Trust. Without it, conducting an orchestra can become one of the most unsettling things in the world. What’s the special quality that sets the Santa Cecilia Orchestra apart? It’s colouristic, warm, sensual and theatrical. How have the tones and sounds evolved since you began conducting? The sound was already there when I arrived, but together we worked to find a hierarchical balance between the parts, moment by moment. This is also a kind of life lesson because I have to listen to what others say. What kind of relationship do you have with orchestra maestri? Having Italian roots, there’s an unspoken bond, kind of chemical in a way. I always try to challenge them not only as a form of training, but also to help them grow in their music. It’s a rapport based on

FLAVOUR HOTSPOTS LE JARDINE DE RUSSIE AND STRAVINSKIJ BAR. FOR EXPERIENCING ROME IN THE NAME OF TASTE LUOGHI ICONICI PER VIVERE ROMA IN UN’ARMONIA DI SAPORI E PROFUMI text Virginia Mammoli
There are hotels where we go for a brief stay, perhaps taking in a quick meal, without any expectations. Then there are those hotels where we go for high-end hospitality and fine dining. And the Hotel de Russie in Rome is one of these. Its restaurant Le Jardine de Russie and Stravinskij Bar are well-known amongst not only the most prestigious globetrotters but also Romans themselves. We spoke to Giacinta Polidori, Food & Beverage
a unique and authentic experience. The added value can be found in the attention to detail, the smile on our staff’s faces, the dedicated service and the fact that we show them how important they are to us.

It’s a place to come together, but it’s also a charming and distinctive element of our hotel. How does the collaboration between Fulvio Pierangelini and Executive Chef Nazzareno Menghini play out in the kitchen? Fulvio oversees the guidelines; Nazzareno is the one who brings them
and a dish that’s only seemingly simple, transformed here into a true delicacy. What has made Stravinskij Bar popular for a happy hour in Rome? Its setting and simple, uncontrived luxury have made it the only hotel bar where Romans voluntarily and regularly go. Great classics and a new addition to your cocktail list? Stravinskij Bar has long been popular for martini lovers. We recently thought to pay tribute to them with a menu that not only contains varieties of the historic cock-

WINE EXPERIENCE
A PRICELESS GLASS OF WINE LA CAVE PRIVÉE AT THE MIRABELLE IN THE HOTEL SPLENDIDE ROYAL: THE ONLY SEVENTH-FLOOR WINE CELLAR IN ROME L’UNICA CANTINA AL SETTIMO PIANO DI ROMA, NEL RISTORANTE MIRABELLE DELL’ HOTEL SPLENDIDE ROYAL text Virginia Mammoli
One of the most stunning rooftop restaurants in Rome, Mirabelle at the Hotel Splendide Royal not only boasts a majestic view of the city and an outstanding kitchen run by chef Stefano Marzetti, but also prides itself on a collection of more than 750 labels from across the world in its seventh-floor wine cellar, La Cave Privée. A special space for wine enthusiasts, La Cave Privée is an elegant, air-conditioned private room with a stylish and modern crystal table that can sit up to 12 people where visitors can sample varieties from the renowned Champagne region to the greats of Burgundy, from Baroli to Barbareschi, all the way to Marsala. The room can be reserved for work meetings, private dining or wine tastings directed by Head Sommelier Fabrizio Colaianni. According to Colaianni, “A restaurant of the highest quality such as Mirabelle requires a wine cellar of similar stock, not only in terms of quantity and variety of bottles, but which is also aesthetically beautiful, engaging, and captivating.” Aside from the ambiance though, the principal feature is the wine selection. Colaianni adds, “We must always provide the client with the attention that their requests deserve. We are very happy when a regular client finds something new, one that perhaps comes from another part of the world, or when an international visitor discovers a local wine variety. For this reason, we have local and global wine products, from the most established brands to the smaller wineries, on our shelves. We love to have both. Wine does not compete with itself.” An exclusive experience awaits you at La Cave Privée.
