Reale, Navigli and Darsena, Castello Sforzesco, Leonardo da Vinci’s Last Supper in Santa Maria delle Grazie. Don’t miss our museums, from Galleria d’Arte Moderna to Museo del ‘900, Museo di Scienze Naturali, Museo della Scienza e

della Tecnologia, Brera Picture Gallery and many others. Let yourself be fascinated by the skyscrapers of Porta Nuova and CityLife and go search for unprecedented glimpses of the city as you move away from the centre: each district, with its buildings, shops and meeting points, has its own story that deserves to be discovered and known. Then I suggest a stop in our parks and green areas, for some physical activity. Finally, make the most of the shopping opportunities in the fashion district and in the neighborhood markets; go to the theatre or to San Siro, join in one of the many musical or sporting events that Milan hosts with pride and enthusiasm. Milan’s vitality will win you over. Thank you for choosing us and come back to visit us soon...! 15

BVLGARI HOTEL MILANO Via Privata Fratelli Gabba, 7/B (Milan) ph. +39 02 8058051 bulgarihotels.com Da Niko: the new restaurant inside the Bvlgari Hotel. It features a modern yet welcoming concept that showcases Niko Romito’s traditional dishes, from pasta with tomato sauce to Milanese-style cutlet. Vesta Fiori Chiari: excellent aperitif paired with top-quality seafood dishes. Casa Fiori Chiari: modern Italian cuisine in the heart of Brera. An outdoor table on weekend makes for a truly special and enjoyable dinner. Il Solferino: historic restaurant that serves the best Milanese and Italian dishes in an atmosphere of refinement and elegance. 26

ust a short stroll through the cobblestone streets of Via della Madonnina and Via del Carmine — or along the famous Via dei Fiori Chiari and Via dei Fiori Oscuri — is enough to immerse yourself in the most authentic spirit of Milan. Old signs, historic cafés, studios, and galleries tell the story of a style with deep roots: a blend of culture and elegance, with that touch of eccentricity that makes Brera unmistakable. Strolling through the neighborhood means letting yourself be surprised by hidden courtyards and gardens, stately mansions and small apartments, penthouses and pied-à-terres overflowing with flower boxes, alongside artisans’ workshops. It is an intimate and sophisticated side of Milan, with a bohemian-chic atmosphere, capable of preserving its character without sacrificing its sense of curiosity.

PINACOTECA DI BRERA The Palazzo di Brera is the cultural heart of the neighborhood. For over two centuries, the Academy and the Art Gallery have attracted artists, critics, students, writers, and poets, making this place one of the centers of Milan’s artistic life. The large complex, originally a 14th-century Jesuit convent, was transformed in the 18th century at the behest of Maria Theresa of Austria, who sought to make Brera a cutting-edge cultural hub. It became home to the Academy of Fine Arts, the Braidense Library, and the Pinacoteca. The Pinacoteca’s collections trace the history of Italian painting through masterpieces such as Lamentation over the Dead Christ by Mantegna, The Marriage of the Virgin by Raphael, Supper at Emmaus by Caravaggio, and The Kiss by Hayez. In the Braidense Library, the magnificent reading room features wooden

Here, in fact, Saint Expeditus is venerated – the saint considered a ‘specialist’ in granting swift graces: a popular and whimsical figure, perfectly in tune with the city’s character. VIA SAN MARCO MARKET The neighborhood market brings Via San Marco to life every Monday and Thursday, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. The route leads toward the elegant Piazza San Marco, dominated by the church of the same name, amid stalls where objects and flavors mingle: designer shoes and cashmere sweaters sit alongside roast chickens, 32

THEATER

THE POWER OF THE STAGE The Teatro alla Scala has been Milan’s great world-class opera house since 1778 text by Teresa Favi photo © Teatro alla Scala

O CONCIERGE TIPS Fabio Neri Head Concierge

ROSA GRAND MILANO STARHOTELS COLLEZIONE Piazza Fontana 3, (Milan) ph. +39 02 88127850 collezione.starhotels.com For me, attending a performance at La Scala is an experience everyone should have at least once – not just for the music and dance, but for the atmosphere and history that permeate this extraordinary place. Before the show, take a tour of the La Scala Theater Museum to admire unique artifacts and look out from the historic boxes. 34

ne might think that building a theater requires many years, a few kings, a patient architect, and a respectable amount of money. La Scala proves otherwise. In Milan, in 1776, a theater burned down. Two years later, there was already another one. Of course, in the meantime, a church had also disappeared. It was Santa Maria alla Scala, which had been named after Beatrice Regina della Scala, wife of Bernabò Visconti and a descendant of the Scaligeri of Verona. Beatrice had married Bernabò at the age of twelve and borne him fifteen children: a family life that, viewed from the audience, seems almost more dizzying than that of a soprano. When Maria Theresa of Austria decided that Milan needed a new theater, the church of Santa Maria alla Scala was demoli-

shed, and architect Giuseppe Piermarini was given two years to complete the rest. He used that time with considerable efficiency: on August 3, 1778, La Scala opened its doors with Antonio Salieri’s L’Europa riconosciuta. Since then, Milan has continued to call it La Scala, even though the staircase, strictly speaking, was now elsewhere. THE LIGHT In 1883, another small revolution took place: the Teatro alla Scala became the first public building in Milan to be electrically lit, thanks to Edison. On the ceiling, the grand chandelier featured 383 light bulbs. It’s hard to imagine today the amazement of a theater audience that suddenly no longer depended on open flames. But every era has its own technological marvel. La Scala has seen them all come and go.

THEATER

LA SCALA TAKES ITS NAME FROM BEATRICE DELLA SCALA, AFTER WHOM THE CHURCH ON ITS SITE WAS NAMED. A MEDIEVAL NAME THAT BECAME A LEGEND OF MUSIC THE NAMES The speed with which it was built isn’t its only curious record. La Scala isn’t the oldest theater in Europe, nor even in Italy. Yet, when it comes to opera, La Scala’s name holds a position that’s hard to rival. The reason also lies in the voices that have taken shape here. Giuseppe Verdi is a presence almost inseparable from the theater: Nabucco premiered at La Scala in 1842, Otello in 1887. Gioachino Rossini brought his repertoire there, as did Giacomo Puccini, composer of works destined to become universal classics. But the history of La Scala is not just that of composers. It is shaped by performers capable of transforming a performance into an event. Maria Callas is the name most closely associated with the legendary era of the Milanese theater. Luciano Pavarotti and Plácido Domingo have graced

the same stage, while before them, Giuseppina Strepponi – Verdi’s future wife – had built a significant part of her career here. At the podium, Arturo Toscanini and Riccardo Muti left their indelible marks on La Scala, each in their own era. In the realm of dance, the theater has linked its name to Carla Fracci, Rudolf Nureyev, Alessandra Ferri, and Roberto Bolle. Nureyev made his debut at La Scala in 1964, alongside Margot Fonteyn, in Giselle. DECEMBER 7 And then there’s December 7. La Scala’s opening night, on the feast day of Saint Ambrose, the patron saint of Milan, is much more than just the start of the opera season. It’s one of the city’s most closely watched events, an evening when the theater also becomes a social and institutional gathering place. On the red carpet, leading figures from the worlds of

culture, politics, business, and entertainment come together; the auditorium is often filled with the nation’s highest-ranking officials. Tickets are among the most coveted of the season, and the anticipation begins long before the orchestra tunes its instruments. SUPERSTITIONS Naturally, in a place where ghosts, stars, monarchs, and tenors have graced its halls for nearly two and a half centuries, superstitions are inevitable. It is said that Maria Malibran and Maria Callas left an invisible presence behind. There is even a box considered unlucky, on the third tier. La Scala is made up of all this as well. A demolished church, a theater built in two years, 383 light bulbs, a secret door, a transformable orchestra pit, a bomb, a few ghosts, and an impressive amount of superstition. The rest is music. 39

SECRET MILAN

Even Milan has its own mouth of truth

D

id you know that there’s also a Mouth of Truth in Milan? It’s not as famous as the one in Rome, but it still has a charm all its own. We’re on Via Tartini, at the intersection with Via Carnevali, in the Dergano neighborhood, in the northern part of the city. Here, atop a low wall, accompanied by a colorful bicycle, you can spot a curious mask. The Bocca della Verità is set into the outer wall of a building and is made of terracotta. The one in Milan is obviously inspired by the famous Roman Bocca della Verità, an ancient marble mask linked to one of the capital’s best-known legends. According to tradition, anyone suspected of lying had to place their

Ugo Rossi HEAD CONCIERGE HOTEL GALLIA PALACE PUNTA ALA AND EDITOR-INCHIEF OF MILAN CONCIERGE

hand inside the mouth of the mask. If the person was found guilty, the mouth would close, severing the liar’s hand. The legend spread rapidly, becoming a popular method for resolving issues of jealousy and infidelity. Rome’s Bocca della Verità has also inspired numerous films and literary works.

One of the most famous is Roman Holiday, starring Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck. The scene in which the two protagonists place their hands in the mouth is iconic, helping to transform it into a world-renowned tourist attraction. On the low wall housing the Milanese replica, there are also several poems, including verses by Pablo Neruda and Gabriel García Márquez, along with others by Leopardi. There are also two posters that recount the neighborhood’s history, transforming this corner of Dergano almost into a small memorial to its past. Behind the Bocca is a small garden, whose plants are tended by the neighborhood’s residents. 41

GREEN MILAN The perfect spots to discover creative and contemporary plant-based cuisine text by Martina Olivieri

I

n Milan, plant-based cuisine has taken a new turn. From restaurants that have elevated the vegetarian philosophy to a true form of haute cuisine to more casual bistros, eating vegan or vegetarian today increasingly means discovering creative dishes, seasonal ingredients, and new interpretations of flavor. We’ve rounded up some of Milan’s most interesting spots, where plant-based ingredients take center stage without sacrificing culinary innovation, conviviality, and the joy of dining. Founded in Milan in 1989 from the vision of Pietro Leemann, Joia has turned vegetarian haute cuisine into a true philosophy of life. Here, organic ingredients, seasonality, international techniques, and Italian tradition come together in a cuisine designed to nourish both body and mind. This pioneering work was first 42

recognized by Michelin with a star and later with the Green Star for sustainability. Today, under the guidance of Sauro Ricci and Raffaele Minghini,

WE’VE ROUNDED UP SOME MUST-VISIT SPOTS TO HELP YOU DISCOVER A DIFFERENT WAY TO ENJOY DINING Joia continues to explore the creative potential of the plantbased world. At Lughino, plant-based cuisine is much more than a trend: it’s a con-

scious choice, built over time through research, collaboration, and respect for nature. Located between Milan and Como, this restaurant specializing in contemporary natural cuisine serves organic ingredients and an entirely plantbased menu, where flavor and well-being coexist without compromise. The restaurant’s signature dish? Lasagna, offered in over 50 variations throughout the year, always changing with the rhythm of the seasons. An authentic and constantly evolving cuisine, conceived as a daily act of care for people and the environment. In the heart of Porta Romana, Vegamore is the vegan bistro founded in 2017 from the dream of Fabio and Morena: to create an informal and welcoming place where plantbased cuisine is also synonymous with conviviality.
