A special tour of the Versilian coast from south to north Un itinerario ad hoc, da sud a nord della Versilia TORRE DEL LAGO Our first stop is the Regional Park of Migliarino, San Rossore, and the Massaciuccoli Lake, located very close to Pisa and its world-famous leaning tower. This protected park is rich in low dunes, pioneer plants, pinewoods planted in the eighteenth century and sweet-smelling stretches of Mediterranean scrub populated with deer and wild boars.

At Torre del Lago, an environmentally-friendly navigation service offers tours of the Massaciuccoli Lake, a WWF and LIPU-protected area: a paradise for birdwatching and naturalistic photography lovers.

Situated on the lake’s shore facing the coast is the famous Villa Puccini, where Giacomo Puccini, the

LIDO DI CAMAIORE Fossa dell’Abate marks the boundary with Lido di Camaiore, the ideal destination for a family-friendly vacation. LE FOCETTE, TONFANO, FIUMETTO Le Focette, once the heart of the Versilian area’s nightlife with the famous Bussola club, owned by Bernardini, and other popular clubs where the greatest singers of the ‘60s and ‘70s performed, including Mina; next comes Tonfano, with its lovely street markets and focaccia stalls; last but not least, Fiumetto, home of the beautiful Versiliana park, so dear to the great poet D’Annunzio, where a popular music and theatre festival is held every year in summertime.

FORTE DEI MARMI Viale Morin, the quiet and tree-lined residential avenue running parallel to

The Forte dei Marmi’s pier the seafront, takes us straight to Forte dei Marmi, the Versilia area’s most exclusive town.

The bustling holiday resort atmosphere, which starts fading in Fiumetto, disappears here: private and selective beach clubs, high-end designer boutiques, luxury shops, gourmet restaurants. An upmarket and elegant summer retreat, Forte dei Marmi is the Italian answer to Saint Tropez, although it seems to have forgotten lately the low-key chic that once pervaded it and made it the buen retiro of the Agnelli family.

Do not miss Forte dei Marmi’s Wednesday street market (a smaller version is held on Sundays), where you can find quite expensive but beautiful and sophisticated items of

If you’re a nightlife lover, welcome to wonderland. The Italian “gilded youth” flocks to this part of the coast every night, with the evening evolving gently from aperitivo to dinner to dancing at the Capannina, usually at the crowded piano bar.

FROM VITTORIA APUANA TO MARINA DI MASSA After Forte dei Marmi, the vacation goes back to a more family-focused style. Vittoria Apuana, Cinquale, Poveromo, Ronchi and Marina di Massa are definitely more traditional and affordable seaside destinations and the restyling they have under-

gone (especially Cinquale and Vittoria Apuana) in the past few years has made a big improvement in appearance.

Poveromo - in the 1700s it was a marshy and inaccessible place, populated with criminals fleeing from justice- began developing into a residential area in the late 1970s, with big villas surrounded and protected by the lush vegetation and thick pinewoods.

In those years, immediately following the economic boom, there was a very popular club in this area, Oliviero, which was in competition with La Bussola and La Capannina, having the plus of allowing customers to enjoy drinks and relax by the poolside.

It closed down in early 2000, but it will be forever part of the history of this piece of Tuscan coast.

Poveromo - nel 1700 località paludosa e inaccessibile, rifugio di malviventi e balordi che non volevano scontare le proprie pene – da fine anni ’70 è diventata una zona di ville, anche molto grandi, protette dalla vegetazione e dagli alberi della pineta.

Proprio in questi anni, quelli subito dopo il boom economico, anche in questa zona c’era un locale gettonatissimo: Oliviero, che faceva concorrenza a La Bussola e a La Capannina, soprattutto per chi aveva voglia di una bevuta tranquilla a bordo piscina. Chiuso all’inizio del 2000 rimane un pezzo di storia indelebile di questa parte della costa.

To fully appreciate Pietrasanta, ideally you should arrive around sunset, perhaps bicycling along the treelined boulevard that leads from the sea to this carved-from-marble locale. If you get here around six in the evening, start with a little shopping.

First stop is Zoe: for a light, flowery dress to go with a pair of custommade clogs and the delightful, refined and never gaudy costume jewellery. Then cross the piazza Duomo and pause a few moments in front of the four monumental works by Igor Mitoraj, commemorating the artist in the year of his death and recounting his ties to this place. Mitoraj Mito e Musica (‘Mitoraj Myth and Music’), on in Pietrasanta until August 30, is a mixed event that will wind through

Those wishing to extend this complex and fascinating artistic journey should next visit the Museo dei Bozzetti, a treasure chest of reproductions of celebrated artistic works and remnants of the many artists who spent time here; followed by a visit to the many galleries either born here or that have chosen Pietrasanta as their second home: Cardi Gallery, Flora Bigai, Spirale Arte, to name but a few. If instead you wish to continue shopping, take via Stagi and lose yourself in the small shops lining this street and the one parallel.

It’s almost aperitif time now, and here’s a sound recommendation: Head back towards piazza Duomo and stop at Vintage Cafè or Bar Pietrasantese, with tables overlooking the Square. If you haven’t reserved a restaurant for dinner, there’s no time to lose because at dinner time Pietrasanta fills up very quickly. Pinocchio, Enoteca Marcucci, Filippo or Marzocco are the most popular choices, each with its musts: at Pinocchio, it’s about simple yet creative cuisine; at Filippo, the meat is exceptional; Marzocco offers an explosion of local flavours with an ‘ethnic’ touch; and at Enoteca Marcucci, the most famous and storied of these, enjoy a candle-lit meal (either outside or inside), with champagne to accompany your meat or grilled fish. While these are our recommendations, you can always follow your own intuition and choose from among the countless small restaurants, many located on lesser-known side-streets, that you’ll pass while touring the town.

The nice thing about Pietrasanta is that here everything is quality, with rather similar prices from place to place. For an after-dinner drink or night out at the disco, head back to Vintage with its comfortable outdoor seating, complete with couches and plush cushions, at the rear of the establishment.

Enoteca Marcucci è il più celebre e quello con più storia: si mangia sia fuori che dentro, a lume di candela bevendo champagne con carne e pesce alla griglia. Se questi sono i nostri consigli, scegliete pure a intuito tra i mille ristorantini che incontrerete girando anche per le strade secondarie: l’offerta qui è tutta di un buon livello con prezzi piuttosto uniformi tra un luogo e l’altro.

Per un drink prima di andare a letto o di continuare la serata in discoteca, si torna al Vintage, magari comodamente seduti sui divani e cuscini del salotto en plein air nella parte retrostanto del locale.

Tuscan allure The essence of a bygone Tuscany Bolgheri e Castagneto Carducci

Bolgheri, those five kilometres of ancient cypress trees remembered by Carducci as “tall and upright in double rows,” is located inland from the Etruscan Coast, less than 10 km from the sea and a half-hour drive from Viareggio.

This tiny, exquisite village has leapt into the international elite tourism limelight in the last thirty years, making a name for itself as a famed wine-making region, as well as a place of charmed lifestyle—which, rather quietly (something highly appreciated in certain circles), brings together the very best of the Tuscan good life: wine, hillside, an ideal climate, aristocratic appeal, and the sea.

Having passed the famous Viale dei Cipressi¸ the cypress-lined boulevard perpendicular to the sea that leads directly to the village, next are the cellars

Bolgheri, ovvero quei cinque chilometri di cipressi secolari “alti e schietti in duplice filar” di carducciana memoria.

Nell’entroterra della Costa degli Etruschi, a meno di 10 km dal mare e a una mezz’ora di macchina da Viareggio, vi attende questo piccolo prezioso borgo balzato, negli ultimi trent’anni, agli onori del turismo internazionale d’élite sia per la fama del suo vino sia per il suo lifestyle che, senza far rumore (cosa molto apprezzata in certi ambienti), condensa il meglio del saper vivere toscano: vino, colline, clima perfetto, appeal aristocratico e mare. Approaching the village, you begin to make out the captivating red-brick castle of Bolgheri through the trees, so beautiful and perfect it seems lifted from the pages of a fairy tale. Leave your car in the small pay parking lot that you’ll find on the right. A few steps on (ideal for a few lovely snapshots) you will find yourself directly in front of the tower and gates to the village. Just above the doors, notice the large coat of arms of the della Gherardesca Counts, the ancient noble family who inhabited the castle going back to 1200. Just beyond the splendid castle, the village centre starts, and it’s here you will find the not-to-miss terracotta productions of Gabriele Fantozzi, at via Lauretta 12/a; and the Enoteca Tognoni, at number 5 on the same street, where all the exceptional red wines of this area are available, also by the glass. From the end of town, take the unpaved road on the left for a pleasant, brief stroll past the vineyards and knotty olive trees belonging to the Gherardesca family farmhouses. The surrounding countryside produces some of the best Tuscan wines, prized throughout the world. In addition to Sassicaia, considered one of the finest red wines available (and as such is among the most expensive), there are also Bolgheri Superiore,

Pochi passi a piedi (perfetti per scattare qualche bella foto) e vi troverete proprio di fronte alla torre ed alla porta di accesso al borgo. Appena sopra la porta certamente noterete il grande stemma dei conti della Gherardesca, antica casata nobile proprietaria del castello fin dal 1200. È proprio al di là di questo splendido castello che si sviluppa il centro storico dove sono da vedere le terrecotte di Gabriele Fantozzi in via Lauretta 12/a, e l’Enoteca Tognoni, al numero al 5 della stessa strada, che serve tutti i grandi rossi della zona anche al bicchiere. Dalla fine dell’abitato, se si imbocca lo sterrato sulla sinistra, parte una bella passeggiata a piedi. Ci si ritrova in breve in mezzo alle vigne e agli olivi dal tronco nodoso che circondano le case coloniche dei conti della Gherardesca. Le campagne circostanti producono vini d’eccellenza: nascono nella zona di Bolgheri alcuni dei migliori vini toscani rinomati in tutto il mondo. Oltre al Sassicaia, considerato uno dei rossi più pregiati e per questo, anche tra i più costosi, c’è poi il Bolgheri Superiore, Bolgheri Rosso, Ornellaia, ma anche ottimi vini bian-

Bolgheri Rosso, Ornellaia, as well as some excellent white wines, such as Vermentino and Bolgheri Bianco. More than thirty area producers make up the Bolgheri Doc Consortium, which guarantees the absolute quality of their products. Every year in July and August the Bolgheri Melody Festival takes place, an event rich in music, theatre, and dance. Most of the events are held in a large arena located at the start of the viale dei Cipressi. Along the road that winds from Bolgheri through olive groves, vineyards, farmed fields and manor houses, next is Castagneto Carducci, where the poet Giosuè Carducci lived from 1848 to 1849. Park outside the town, and just as you start to walk up to the town centre, take a moment

Along the streets of Castagneto, many details recall the town’s medieval origins: family crests, arches, decorations, and capitals added during later constructions.

Mick Jagger, Kate Moss and Sarah Jessica Parker are but a few of the international jet set known to love this stretch of upper Maremma, just a stone’s throw from the sea.

In 2010, Jagger stopped in Castagneto to order Maremma style jackets (as well as the “Lucca” model) from Florin Cristea, a traditional tailor whose shop Arte e moda is located at 50 via Vittorio Emanuele.

Also this Summer of 2015, international sailing happens to be linked to the Versilia.

The shipyards along the Tyrrhenian coast have indeed produced the yachts that are dominating the international markets, deserving the greatest success in the trade fairs of the sector in all five continents.

For example, the Perini Navi Group has just won the Neptune Award -the umpteenth award of primary importance for the company- as Best Motor Boat of the year and Best Motor Yacht in the category of ships below 3,000 tons with its Grace E, the third motor boat of 73 meters produced by Picchiotti, whose technical, aesthetic and quality characteristics convinced the jury members of the World Superyachts Awards.

The Grace E also does justice to the ships that have come before it, like the multi-awarded 50 meter Exuma and the 55 meter Galileo G, showing all the typical elements of the design that characterizes the Vitruvius series: authonomous cruising range of 7,800 miles at a cruising speed of 12 knots and a maximum speed of 17.5 knots.

The Perini Navi Group has also launched the sailing ship Perseus, the second 60 meter sailing yachts produced by this Italian shipyard, which has collaborated with Future Fibres in the creation of the 75.8 me-

The latest yacht produced by Benetti, the 60-meter FB255 M/Y Formosa, was launched on December the 4th in the waters next to the shipyard in Livorno: this steel and aluminum yacht is spread over five decks and has a length of 10.6 meters.

With five suites for ten guests, an entire deck devoted to the owner’s apartment and a crew of 14 people to provide support to the captain, the Formosa can reach a top speed of 16 knots, with a cruising speed of 15 knots.
