Raise your eyes. You will once again feel like little children who get excited when they see so many lights and decorations.

It may be cold but during the Christmas season Tuscany takes on a bright sparkling look that makes it warmer and more magical. Our region is so beautiful when it dresses up for the holiday period: the shopping streets sparkle, and the roads of the old towns are colored with decorated fir trees. And for a top-notch Christmas, take to the mountains for the snow covered slopes where you can even meet Santa Claus in the flesh on his reindeer-drawn sleigh.

So here is a guide to the must-see cities and places, selected based on the spacial events dedicated to Christmas.

FLORENCE I may be the lights and candles that give Florence its holiday feel but the lights seen from above from Piazzale Michelangelo, at this time of the year, are something magical. It is something that we discover upon entering the tangle of Christmas illuminations that decorate the shopping streets, in the triangle between Via Calzaiuoli, Via degli Speziali and Via del Corso. The entire fashion

FIRENZE Sarà per il gioco di luci e candele che fanno aria di festa ma la luce della Firenze vista dall’alto del piazzale Michelangelo, in questo periodo, ha un qualcosa di magico. La scopriamo entrando nel groviglio delle luminarie di Natale che impreziosiscono le strade dello shop-

SIENA The city of the Palio is always splendid but at Christmas it is even more beautiful. Among the walls, towers and ancient gates, it seems that here the clock of history stopped in the Middle Ages. Every year, in early December, a majestic spruce is lit up in the central Piazza Salimbeni with many, many cards hanging from the tree, while the magnificent Piazza del Campo becomes the frame for the Mercato del Campo market (the 2017 edition falls on December 2-3) for a dip into the 14th century surrounded by the history, crafts and flavors of the region. Ma l’itinerario natalizio diventa anche l’occasione per scoprire il famoso ciclo di affreschi di Piero della Francesca e, perché no, concedersi una pausa dedicata allo shopping, portando a casa magari un originale souvenir tra le ceramiche della Valdichiana, il panno del Casentino, i merletti di Sansepolcro.

Christmas among the vineyards Un Natale speciale tra i vigneti During the weekend of the Immacolata, December 8 – 10, the Movimento Turismo del Vino is organizing Cantine Aperte at Christmas: many winemakers will open their doors to visitors with events designed ad hoc, tastings and guided visits. Some examples? Casa di Terra and Tenuta di Vaira in the area around Bolgheri, and Poggio La Luna in Maremma. From December 12 to Epiphany, anyone passing along via Chiantigiana should make a late-evening stop at Villa Cerna. They will witness an unprecedented site. Luci in vigna, a luminous installation commissioned by the Cecchi Family, made by Angela Nocentini, and designed and produced

by Riccardo Cioni. The leaves in the vineyard will come to life with light and dimension, from dusk to deep in the night, transforming the vineyard into a magical illumination. And with the arrival of the company’s 125th anniversary, the façade of the headquarters of the historic wine cellar will also come to life with colourful projections that celebrate this important anniversary.

But another surprise awaits at the gates to Arezzo: the historic mechanical Nativity in the medieval village of Tenuta Il Borro, property of the Ferragamo family who produces excellent wines here. A corner of history and magic, where every child is fascinated by the immense splendour and where each one of us can once again be a young dreamer.

Nel weekend dell’Immacolata, 8-10 dicembre, il Movimento Turismo del Vino organizza Cantine Aperte a Natale. E in Toscana molte aziende vitivinicole, per l’occasione, aprono le porte ai visitatori con eventi realizzati ad hoc, degustazioni e visite guidate.

Tra queste Casa di Terra e Tenuta di Vaira nella zona di Bolgheri, e Poggio La Luna in Maremma. Dal 12 dicembre fino all’Epifania chi passa dalla via Chiantigiana mediti una sosta in tarda serata davanti alla collina di Villa Cerna. Assisterà ad uno spettacolo inaudito. Luci in vigna, installazione luminosa voluta da Famiglia Cecchi e realizzata da Angela Nocentini ideata e prodotta da Riccardo Cioni. Le foglie del vigneto si illuminano dall’imbrunire a notte fonda, trasformando il vigneto in una luminaria magica. E per festeggia i 125 anni di attività nel 2018, la facciata della storica cantina si colora di proiezioni luminose per celebrare, insieme al Natale, anche questo importante anniversario.

Ma un’altra sorpresa ci aspetta alle porte di Arezzo. E’ l’antico Presepe meccanico nel borgo medievale della Tenuta Il Borro proprietà della famiglia Ferragamo che qui produce vini eccellenti. Un angolo di storia e magia, dove ogni bambino resta affascinato davanti a tanto splendore e dove ognuno di noi torna ad essere un giovane sognatore.

The first great Tuscan wine, in the modern meaning of the word, dates back to the late nineteenth century and was the result of the groundbreaking and far-sighted work of Ferruccio Biondi Santi, the father of Brunello di Montalcino wine, who realized that proper growing and vinification of Sangiovese grapes would lead to a structured and long-living wine. Since then, Brunello di Montalcino Biondi Santi has been one of the finest and best-known Italian wines. The rise in popularity of the wines of the Tuscan Coast, including Sassicaia whose production method in Bolgheri was inspired by the great French wines, is a more recent phenomenon. The 1980, 1981 and 1985 Sassicaia vintages, a blend of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc grapes, met with huge international success and still receive great attention from collectors.

In Bolgheri again, but a few years later, another unforgettable wine was created: Masseto, a 100% Merlot by Tenuta dell’Ornellaia, which is one of the few Italian labels to be quoted on the British Stock Exchange among other foreign icon wines. Another revolutionary wine project is the one that led to the production, in the Chianti Classico area, of Tignanello wine by Antinori, a paragon

Il primo grande vino toscano in senso moderno risale alla fine del secolo XIX e si deve all’attività controcorrente e lungimirante di Ferruccio Biondi Santi, il padre del Brunello di Montalcino, il quale intuì che un’adeguata coltivazione e vinificazione del Sangiovese avrebbe potuto realizzare un vino strutturato e longevo. Da allora il Brunello di Montalcino Biondi Santi non ha mai cessato di rappresentare un’eccellenza dell’enologia italiana.

Più recente il boom dei vini della Costa Toscana, con il Sassicaia che a Bolgheri inaugura un progresso enologico incredibile ispirato dai grandi vini francesi. Ottenuto da Cabernet Sauvignon per l’85% e da Cabernet Franc, con le annate 1980, 1981 e 1985 riscuote un enorme successo mondiale, la cui portata non si è ancora esaurita. Sempre a Bolgheri, qualche anno dopo, viene alla luce un’altra bottiglia memorabile: il Masseto, Merlot in purezza della Tenuta dell’Ornellaia e che oggi è uno dei pochi vini italiani quotati all’indice borsistico britannico dei grandi vini del mondo.

Altro progetto rivoluzionario è quello che, nel territorio del Chianti Classico, determinò l’origine del Tignanello in casa Antinori, un modello di eccellenza ed eleganza.

The charity project by Obicà and Fondazione Francesca Rava Il progetto charity di Obicà e Fondazione Francesca Rava This Christmas, it only takes one chocolate to be a better person, thanks to the charity project where once again the restaurant Obicà, realm of the buffalo mozzarella Campana Dop with a store on glittering Via de’ Tornabuoni in Florence, and the Fondazione Francesca Rava - NPH Italia Onlus will be collaborating. From December 8 to January 6, this tasty address will not only be the setting for delicious lunches and dinners serving gourmet pizzas and exquisitely seasonal recipes, but it will also be where you can make this small and precious gesture: for every T’a Milano chocolate served with coffee, Obicà Mozzarella Bar will donate 1 euro toward the purchase of milking cows for the Baby House and other initiatives in Haiti promoted by the Fondazione, a not-for-profit organization that for 30 years has been working to help thousands of children throughout the world. The project is called Una mucca sotto l’albero (A cow under the Christmas tree) and it aims to produce fresh milk for the very young orphans and abandoned children in the Baby House run by Father Rick Frechette, an American priest and doctor, chairman of NPH Haiti. A simple but concrete action to fight poverty and malnutrition, guaranteeing a crucial food for the growth of every child with a view to self-sustainability.

Questo Natale basta un cioccolatino per essere più buoni, grazie al progetto charity che vede collaborare ancora una volta il ristorante Obicà, regno della mozzarella di bufala Campana Dop che a Firenze ha sede nella scintillante via de’ Tornabuoni, e la Fondazione Francesca Rava - NPH Italia Onlus. Dall’8 dicembre al 6 gennaio questo indirizzo del gusto non sarà solo la cornice di deliziosi pranzi e cene a base di pizze gourmet e proposte squisitamente stagionali, ma sarà anche il luogo dove fare un piccolo e prezioso gesto: per ogni cioccolatino di T’a Milano servito con il caffè, Obicà Mozzarella Bar devolverà infatti 1 euro per l’acquisto di mucche da latte per la Baby House e le altre iniziative in Haiti promosse dalla Fondazione, un’organizzazione no profit che da trent’anni lavora per assistere migliaia di bambini nel mondo.

Il progetto si chiama Una mucca sotto l’albero e ha come obiettivo la produzione di latte fresco per i piccoli orfani o abbandonati accolti nella Baby House diretta da padre Rick Frechette, sacerdote e medico americano, direttore di NPH Haiti. Un’azione semplice ma concreta per combattere la povertà e la malnutrizione garantendo un alimento fondamentale per la crescita di ogni bambino in un’ottica di autosostenibilità. Un dolce messaggio di spirito natalizio per regalare un sorriso.

Il Teatro Verdi propone il 24 dicembre il suo Concerto di Natale, diretto da Daniele Rustioni, con Alessandro Taverna al pianoforte e dedicato a Beethoven.

PROSE A full intense month at the Teatro della Pergola. From December 5 to 10, Musica ribelle is on stage with music by Eugenio Finardi and directed by Emanuele Gamba, a unique story of the 1970s; from the 12th to the 17th, the troubled noble Pirandello is back with Enrico IV acted and directed by theatrical maestro Carlo Cecchi; to end the year (from December 27 to January 2) the choice falls to the brilliant work that Monica Guerritore has taken from Husbands and Wives by Woody Allen, accompanied in her adventure by Francesca Reggiani. At Teatro Puccini, instead on December 13 and 14, there is the show with Natalino Balasso and Marta Dalla Via in Delusionist, a title that is more than a metaphor.

FOR CHILDREN This year too, Teatro Puccini wishes to dedicate a “corner” of its December calendar to its youngest audience, starting with The Fir Tree/Pupi di Stac on December 3, to jump into the Christmas spirit and a joyful finale with the traditional Anderson story; on the ninth and 10th, the scene is The Wizard of Oz, while December 27, the spotlights are pointed on Scrooge and his Christmas Carol in the version by Teo Paoli.

From Michelangelo and Pontormo to Giambologna, with more than 70 works by artists who spoke, lived and changed the way of conceiving space and size in the regional capital. In Palazzo Medici Riccardi, on the other hand, there is an exhibition entitled Made in New York. Kate Haring (Subway drawings) Paolo Buggiani and co. La vera origine della street art, an open dialog between the graffiti culture and the Street Art dimension, to understand an art form that is now familiar. Until 21 January 2018, Piazza della Signoria is hosting the colossus of the Swiss Urs Fischer: Big Clay #4, twelve meters of ultracontemporary metal.

SIENA In the stratified museum complex of Santa Maria della Scala, until 21 January 2018, Ambrogio Lorenzetti will be on display. You can admire his cycle of frescoes of the San Galgano Montesiepi chapel and the polyptych from the Church of San Pietro in Castelvecchio in Siena: a unique opportunity to understand the facets of an artist who represents a new way of seeing the world and the Middle Ages.
