Mariangela Rossi Genoa-born but Milanese by heart, she is a well-known lifestyle journalist. She has written several books and essays on the little pleasures in life.

Albiera Antinori Vice president of Marchesi Antinori Spa, she is the eldest of Piero Antinori’s three daughters. Since 1994 she has been president of Prunotto srl in Alba, Piedmont. In addition to strategic marketing, she follows the company’s plans to build new wineries, including the new Bargino winery, jewel in the Chianti Classico crown.

Luca Lo Presti Founder and President of Pangea, the nonprofit association whose aim is to improve women’s lives in countries where they experience the most discrimination and to offer support to mothers who are victims of domestic violence in Italy. Born in Milan in 1963, founded the Fondazione Pangea Onlus in 2011.

very time you pack a suitcase is it a struggle to get everything in and you always end up leaving something at home?

Here’s a practical guide to ensure you don’t forget anything, and never have to resort to holiday enemy number one – the iron.

1. Lists are the first secret to having everything under control. If you write down every single thing you won’t risk leaving something essential behind or taking 28

2. Following the golden rule that “heavy objects go on the opposite side to the suitcase handle”, always put shoes on the bottom, inside cloth not plastic bags so they can breathe.

3. After packing the shoes, check the spaces between one pair and another.

Quando viaggi per piacere o per lavoro che cosa ti aspetti dagli hotel che ti ospitano?

Se viaggio per piacere, in destinazioni più ‘vacanziere’, per me è essenziale un bravo concierge che consigli e organizzi attività in zona.

Quando invece viaggio per lavoro, cerco alberghi efficienti, centrali e con un buon accesso ai trasporti urbani, senza code alla reception, silenziosi, con macchina per caffè espresso in camera e WiFi velocissima.

Dal tuo punto di vista privilegiato, come commenti il dato che vede l’Italia prima nella classifica mondiale come Paese produttore di vino?

L’Italia ha scalato la classifica della quantità, ma c’è ancora tanto da lavorare per migliorare sia qualitativamente la produzione nazionale (anche se negli ultimi anni sono stati fatti passi avanti importanti) che da un punto di vista promozionale e di vendita, in maniera da poter rendere l’Italia prima nelle due classifiche mondiali.

Qual è il caso più affascinante di biodiversità nel quale ti sei imbattuta?

L’attività della nostra famiglia si basa, in fondo, sulla biodiversità: la grande varietà di vitigni, il terroir che ne influenza la produzione, la varietà di flora e di fauna che rendono speciale ogni territorio, la tipicità delle produzioni locali. Siamo fortunati di poter vedere ogni giorno nelle nostre fattorie casi di biodiversità a cui poniamo particolare attenzione nel preservarla e implementarla.

2) Robiola (Piedmont). Small soft-ripened cheese, beguiling and freshly flavored, made with at least 50% goat’s milk. The version from Roccaverano is extraordinary.

ere’s the story of a mob boss and a movie star. One is named Johnny Depp. One is named James “Whitey” Bulger.

They’ve never met before.

Actually, let’s put it this way: Whitey Bulger, who’s serving back-to-back life sentences in a federal prison in the United States, and who knows all of Johnny Depp’s films, is also probably the only person in the world to ever have refused a private meeting with the most beloved actor in the world.

It’s because Johnny Depp was just about to play him in the film Black Mass, and Bulger didn’t particularly like this, so he refused to meet him. His lawyer, one Hank Brennan, declared: “Hollywood’s greed is behind my client’s nervousness to speak – and the film forgets to talk about the responsibili40

ties of the FBI, its involvement in the homicides that the film depicts.” He announced that Bulger would not see the film.

That’s a shame, because he might have liked it. The film is quite good. “Johnny Depp does career-best work as notorious Boston gangster James ‘Whitey’ Bulger in Scott Cooper’s taut, elegantly understated crime drama,” wrote Scott Foundas, critic at Variety, the world’s most important cinema magazine. Dave Calhoun of Time Out echoes these sentiments: “Johnny Depp is more engaging than he’s been in years.” There are already many rumors surrounding the film as a possible Oscar candidate. hair, and a low voice, almost a whisper. He orders his “guys” around and doesn’t hesitate to kill: out of the blue, completely by surprise, he’s suffocating, strangling, choking with his hands.

Depp, how does one go about playing a crime boss whose name is linked to 19 homicides?

Simply by portraying a human being: this is what I attempted in my performance - it’s the human side that you look for.

Did you struggle to really enter into Bulger’s dark side?

I found evil within myself a long time ago. I accepted it, and we are now old friends.

In any case, Bulger was a complex man, with many different dimensions. No one wakes up in the morning, brushes their teeth and looks in the mirror thinking ‘I’m evil’ or ‘I’ll do 42

“I made an attempt to see him out of respect for him, knowing that I would act out his life on screen. But I knew that

Ho trovato il male dentro di me tanto tempo fa. L’ho accettato, e adesso siamo vecchi amici. In ogni caso, Bulger era un uomo complesso, a molte dimensioni.

Nessuno si sveglia la mattina e si lava i denti e si guarda allo specchio pensando ‘io sono malvagio’ o ‘farò qualcosa di male oggi’…

Ma per un boss la violenza è una dimensione quotidiana.

E’ parte del lavoro. È, in qualche modo, il suo linguaggio. Ma non è solo quello. Lui poteva aiutare una vecchietta a portare la spesa fin dentro casa e dieci minuti dopo poteva fare esplodere il cranio di qualcuno. Ma era quello il mondo che conosceva, l’unico.

Bulger si è rifiutato di incontrarla…

It’s true. I didn’t want to act at all. I wanted to play music.

That was my dream.

Why didn’t you want to be an actor?

The actor says phrases that he doesn’t think, and often these phrases are poorly written. When I got into acting, by chance, I told myself: okay, at least don’t end up pigeonholed. You should always change characters: get in there and enjoy the challenge. You will risk looking like a fool, but you will have at least tried.

Which actors do you most admire?

John Barrymore, John Garfield, Lon Chaneyu sr, and Marlon Brando: actors who transform themselves. I have always wanted to be transformed— and not just be a poster boy, as they wanted me to become a hundred years ago.

You didn’t meet Bulger, but one of his friends came on set…

Yes, and I was really worried about what he would think. It was Jay Carney, another one of his lawyers. He helped me find the character, and on a few different occasions came on set. After one scene he shook his head, and I really felt disheartened. Then he said: God, I’m getting chills, you’re him!

Then he told me that he could ‘feel’ his old friend in what I was doing.

Perché non voleva fare l’attore?

L’attore dice frasi che non pensa, e spesso sono frasi scritte male.

Quando sono finito, per caso, a recitare, mi sono detto: almeno, non finire in trappola. Cambia sempre personaggio: giocati sempre una sfida. Rischierai di

sembrare un cretino, ma ci avrai provato.

Ma quali sono i suoi attori di riferimento?

John Barrymore, John Garfield, Lon Chaneyu sr, e Marlon Brando: attori che si trasformano. Io ho sempre voluto trasformarmi e non essere un ragazzo da poster, come volevano farmi diventare cento anni fa.

Sì, ed ero molto preoccupato per il suo giudizio. Si tratta di Jay Carney, un altro dei suoi legali. Mi ha aiutato a trovare il personaggio, e in un paio di occasioni è venuto sul set. Dopo una scena ha scosso la testa e mi sono avvilito molto. Poi ha detto: Dio, mi vengono i brividi, sei lui!

Piero, Ignazio, and Gianluca - who are all impressively young - unite their voices in a musical project called Il Volo. As in a fairy tale, everything began in 2009 when a television talent show presented these three boys from Agrigento, Trapani, and Teramo to the Italian public. Their unmistakable sound is a mixture of opera and pop, classic and innovative spirit. Their success quickly catapulted them to the United States. In 2010 when they released their studio record We Are The World 25 for Haiti, no one knew who they were. But the spotlight immediately shone on them when Justin Bieber, Celine Dion, and Kanye West were

all exclaiming, “What is this?” Thus began the story of Il Volo, and they glided into Italy and won, in 2015, the Italian Song Festival in San Remo. All the rest is music. Music that comes from the heart, music that breathes the Italian spirit.

Il Volo is a symbol of an Italy that broke through worldwide. They say the international stages have cheered Piero, Ignazio, and Gianluca on since the beginning: from New York to London, Paris to Miami, Moscow to Vienna.

You are the face of Italian music in the world. A perfect union of tradition and ingenuity. Was it hard to get to the top?

It was a fantastic, exciting flight, as the name of our band suggests. As in all

desideri cade dal cielo e per realizzare i sogni, grandi o piccoli che siano, è necessario impegnarsi, lavorare, studiare, spesso soffrire anche un po’. Come descrivereste la vostra “Italia nel cuore”, quella che vi accompagna in ogni parte del mondo?

Il Paese più bello del mondo e mentre ci accompagna, cerchiamo anche di

raccontarla a chi ci segue.

Quali sono i vostri ruoli fuori dal palcoscenico?

Non ci sono ruoli, siamo una sola entità, come i tre moschettieri: uno per tutti, tutti per uno. Ognuno ha i suoi pensieri, le sue idee, i suoi pregi, tanti difetti, ma ci compensiamo e molte volte ci aiutiamo l’un l’altro.

Uno per uno, vorremmo sapere il vostro viaggio dei sogni G: un safari in Africa. I: un safari in Kenya. P: un viaggio in un isolotto di pescatori senza cellulare.

Quello che vi aspetta è una serie di concerti in Italia e poi via verso il “North America Tour 2016”. Qualche piccola anticipazione su quello che ci regalerete.

ow fantastic to be in Florence.

When I come, I have the impression that everything here is attuned to art and beauty. And this piazza – its choral nature fascinates me, the way it makes the masterpieces that make it up accessible to everyone”. At midnight in Florence’s Piazza della Signoria, Jeff Koons commented on the installation of Pluto and Proserpina, his monumental, over 3 metretall sculpture in the famous piazza, with these enthusiastic words and almost childlike wonder – an unmistakable aspect of his character and work. The event inaugurated Jeff Koons In Florence, an extraordinary project that juxtaposes contemporary art with the art and architecture 54

of the Florentine Renaissance.

“I find the Renaissance extremely seductive” continued Koons, the guest of the Tuscan city, “because it encapsulates all the polarities of mankind and expresses all its potential in a wonderful balance. It is surprising to come to Florence and come into contact with this greatness, and at the same time feel that there is room for further experimentation”.

The encounter between the artist and the city – initiated

by Fabrizio Moretti, General Secretary of Florence’s International Antiques Biennale and fine arts dealer, and curated by art historian Sergio Risaliti – is not limited to Pluto and Prosperina.

of the Gazing Ball series of white-plaster sculptures modelled after iconic works from the Greco-Roman era, to which the artist has added a precariously balanced brilliant blue glass ball, has been placed in the Sala dei Gigli in Palazzo Vecchio next to the original of Donatello’s bronze sculpture Judith and Holofernes. The Gazing Ball series takes its name from the mirrored spherical ornaments frequently found on lawns and gardens around Koons’s childhood home in Pennsylvania. Bewitching, enchanting ornamental objects first produced in Venice in the 13th century, they became famous in the 19th century during the reign of Ludovic II of Bavaria, who used them to decorate his palace gardens.

The mystical power of these objects is that they enable whoever gazes into them to see the vastness around them, absorbing their reflection and everything around them into

their mirrored surfaces.

“The challenge, or rather the comparison with the old masters excites me” concluded Koons.

By bringing my art here I can touch the same pleasures that they experienced. This is also dialogue, it’s a connection.

And if you think about it, when these masterpieces were presented to the Florentines centuries ago, they were as bright and sparkling as my Pluto and Proserpina is today.

Not many people know that Pluto and Proserpina will go from Piazza della Signoria straight to Bal Harbour, to the lobby of an upmarket condominium. But you shouldn’t be surprised, after all even Michelangelo worked for the highest bidder.

Pochi sanno che Pluto and Proserpina da piazza della Signoria andranno diretti a Bal Harbour, nella hall di un condominio super vip... Ma non stupitevi, anche Michelangelo lavorava per il miglior offerente.

oved in Italy and all over the world, his works are housed in leading museums and public and private collections in Italy and farther afield.

We interviewed him on the occasion of the retrospective dedicated to him by the Maxxi in Rome: Olivo Barbieri. Images 1978 – 2014.

“I believe that my work begins where photography ends”.

Can you tell us about this sentence of yours?

I titled the retrospective at the MAXXI Images 1978-2014 and not Photographs 1978-2014.

My interest in photography began from those by the likes of Man Ray and Andy Warhol who produced images. The “real” world of photography is recreational. I’m not very attracted, although I respect it, by the rhetoric of fine 58

print photography. When photography ends, regarded as a rhetorical apparatus, images come to life.

Selective focus makes cities into perfect models, far away from the actual chaos of our cities. Is that what you intended to do?

The intention is to take back what we’ve built in cities at a design level and look at it in a new way, examining and questioning it. Deciding whether to accept it or not.

Transforming it. Achieving a new awareness perhaps.

The site specific_ project that involves 50 cities and metropolises around the world is a study in shape –meaningof the contemporary city.

What do you love and what don’t you love about Italy?

I love the images of the art cities and 20th-century architecture.

“Credo che il mio lavoro inizi laddove finisce la fotografia” Ci racconta questa sua frase?

Ho intitolato la retrospettiva al MAXXI “Immagini 1978-2014” e non “Fotografie 1978-2014”.

Il mio interesse per la fotografia ha preso vita dall’opera di autori come Man Ray e Andy Wharol che producevano immagini. Il mondo “reale” della fotografia è amatoriale. Non sono molto attratto, anche se la rispetto, dalla retorica della fine print photography. Provo poco

interesse per gli archivi storici o dei vecchi fotografi. Quando finisce la fotografia, intesa come apparato retorico, prendono vita le immagini.

Il fuoco selettivo rende le città dei plastici perfetti, lontane dal caos reale delle nostre città. E’ questo il suo intento?

L’intento è di riportare quanto abbiamo costruito nelle città, a livello progettuale e di rivederlo, esaminarlo, metterlo in discussione. Decidere se accettarlo o no. Trasformarlo.

Raggiungere una nuova consapevolezza, forse.

Il progetto site specific_ che coinvolge cinquanta città e metropoli nel mondo è uno studio sulla forma - significato della città contemporanea.

Like everyone, I think, I cannot stand the rhetoric with which one pretends to take it into account and nothing gets done about it.

Interpreting reality: your work has always been based on this, whether it’s out of focus, a change in color, overexposure…

I try to invent, construct unorthodox perceptual devices that allow us to explore things in greater depth. I try to go beyond the consolidated academic “state of the art”.

What’s your relationship with light, especially of the artificial variety?

I live a few kilometers from the birthplace of Correggio and I often ride past the property on my bike. One of his most famous works, ``Adoration of the Shepherds,`` also known as ``The Night`` (1530), is a painting 60

The figures in the scene are lit not by lamps, but in an irregular way by a light emanated from the Baby Jesus and Mary. Depending on how you look at it, it could be a mystical, philosophical, magical or technological light. I have always interpreted artificial light as a way of looking at things that opens up passages of representation and at the same time provides new ways of interpreting and therefore reflection.

In your work there’s always a hint of anguish and alienation.

Interpretare la realtà: il suo lavoro è sempre girato intorno a questo, che sia una sfocatura, una alterazione di colore, una sovraesposizione…

Cerco di inventare, costituire degli apparati percettivi non ortodossi che permettano di andare in profondità. Cerco di andare oltre il consolidato accademico “stato dell’arte”.

Che rapporto ha con la luce, soprattutto artificiale?

Abito a pochi chilometri dalla casa natale del Correggio e spesso ci passo davanti in bicicletta. Una delle sue opere più famose, “L’adorazione dei pastori” conosciuta anche come “La Notte” (1530), è un dipinto ambientato al tramonto.

I personaggi della scena sono illuminati non da lampade, ma in modo irregolare da una luce emanata dal Bambino e da Maria. Può essere una luce mistica, filosofica, magica o tecnologica, dipende dal sentimento di chi lo osserva.

Ho sempre interpretato la luce artificiale come possibile macchina di visione che aprisse squarci di rappresentazione e allo stesso tempo fornisse nuove chiavi di lettura e quindi di riflessione.

What’s the filter through which you look at things? Is it strictly personal or more social?

J. G. Ballard claimed that we live in a state of widespread psychopathology. I believe that a solely personal filter no longer exists, unless it’s a pathological one. Art cannot change the world but it can help us to understand it.

The MAXXI retrospective is an important tribute to your work. Has this the way it’s always been? Have you ever had problems winning people over with your way of speaking about reality?

Hard question. Public approval is shaped by institutions and cultural associations. I haven’t been neglected by my country, by its institutions. Although everything has always gone ahead extremely slowly, with 62

Quello del MAXXI è un tributo importante al suo lavoro. E’ stato sempre così, ha mai trovato difficoltà a conquistare il pubblico con questo suo modo di narrare

Domanda difficile. Il consenso del pubblico è forgiato dalle istituzioni e dagli apparati culturali. Non sono stato trascurato dal mio Paese, dalle sue istituzioni. Anche se tutto procede da sempre con estrema lentezza, ritardo e inefficacia.

Jorge Mario Bergoglio, an Argentinian man of Italian ancestry, lives in Rome in a small apartment within the Santa Marta monastery, a hostel that houses the cardinals during the conclave and prelates as they pass through Rome. He pays his own bills and he drives a compact car. Distinguishing features: white robes, black lace shoes and, when he needs it, a bag for documents and personal items that he carries himself. He talks to many and everyone listens. Whether he’s at the U.N. Assembly or at the U.S. Congress, he uses clear and inclusive messages, direct and concrete words. He has restored to us the value of simplicity, a simplicity that gets to the root of everything and overcomes diversity.

Holy Year, 10 years earlier than the usual 25. But he is the most extraordinary of all. His way of doing things, his meaningful gestures and sweetness in perfect harmony with his strength: Pope Francis is loved by all. He’s loved by the faithful and even by non-believers, curious about the pope who refuses luxury and ostentatiousness in all its forms, and who, on Sundays, ends his Angelus by telling his followers to “enjoy their lunch.”

It’s no coincidence that a few days after his election, his popularity went through the roof. In the days after we heard Habemus papam!, journalists and TV producers flew to Argentina to get an idea about his life in Buenos Aires, his neighbors, his friends. They learned about

Ai credenti e, anche, ai non credenti, decisamente e piacevolmente incuriositi da quel papa che rifiuta qualsiasi forma di lusso e di esteriorità e che la domenica, dopo la recita dell’Angelus, saluta i fedeli augurando loro “buon pranzo”.

Non è un caso che, nel giro di pochi giorni dalla sua elezione, la sua popolarità sia andata subito alle stelle. Dal giorno successivo all’Habemus papam, giornalisti e operatori televisivi sono volati in Argentina per raccontare la sua vita a Buenos Aires, le sue abitudini, le sue amicizie.

Tra questi segnaliamo La Carbonara, ristorante a conduzione familiare che dal 1912 propone i piatti cult della tradizione romana, e l’antica norcineria Viola, famosa per i suoi prosciutti, salumi, salsicce e guanciali di produzione artigianale. ensington, once a country village, became popular among ‘persons of quality and note’ at the beginning of the seventeenth century, due to its fresh air and vicinity to smoky London. Beginning in that period, it evolved into a longtime favorite neighborhood among the British aristocracy, officially declared a ‘royal area’ by Queen Victoria, who was born there and lived there until her late teens. Lady Diana lived in an apartment in South Kensington, before tying the knot with Charles, moving to Kensington Palace after her separation from the Prince of Wales. From here, she loved strolling through the streets toward South Kensington. Due to the high concentration of aristocrats born and raised in the area, not many signs of foreign cultures have made their way to this neighborhood - though they’ve always been present throughout London, due to people returning from missions abroad during the colonial era and to immigration waves from those countries during the postcolonial era. However, in recent years, Kensington’s fame has attracted international, wealthy influencers intent on moving to London, like the oil tycoon Abramovich, the owner of the 84

Chelsea Football Club and therefore one of Europe’s key financial players, and Lakshmi Mittal, a major figure in the metal industry, who, with an intense takeover bid, conquered the steel giant Arcelor in 2006.

From here forward, the neighborhood started to take on a more sophisticated air, which has made South Kensington one of the most aspirational neighborhoods in the world capital of finance. We’ll check out some of its main attractions, following Lady Diana’s favorite walking route. Stay in one of the city’s two Starhotels structures.

The first, The Gore, in Queens Gate, was opened by sisters Ada and Fanny Cooke way back in 1892. Each of its six floors is its own kind of treasure chest, with unique pieces from past eras, gilded mirrors, artisanal artworks, and fine fabrics and antiques, all providing you with every type of amenity and technology imaginable, with anything you could possibly want during your stay. he Royal Albert Hall, London’s most famous concert hall – proposed by Prince Albert following the success of the 1851 Great Exhibition – stands in the heart of South Kensington (a stone’s throw from The Gore Hotel, with which it has an exclusive partnership). The innumerable and legendary shows staged there in almost 150 years are part of the English capital’s entertainment history. We met James Ainscough, Chief Operating Officer at the Royal Albert Hall, to find out what exciting events have been lined up for the coming season.

What are the most significant features of Royal Albert Hall?

A determining feature of the RAH is without doubt the organ. It was the biggest in 88

It has 9, 999 pipes, and is used over 60 times a year in different performances. But what really defines us is the variety of our programmes.

La Royal Albert Hall, la sala da concerti più famosa di Londra - concepita dal principe Alberto dopo la Great Exhibition del 1851 - sorge nel cuore di South Kensington (proprio a due passi dal The Gore Hotel, con cui vanta una partnership esclusiva) e gli innumerevoli e leggendari spettacoli, ospitati in quasi 150 anni di attività, fanno parte della storia della musica della capitale britannica.

Abbiamo incontrato James Ainscough, Chief Operating Officer della Royal Albert Hall, per scoprire quali eventi ci aspettano la prossima stagione.

Quali sono le caratteristiche più importanti della Royal Albert Hall?

Una caratteristica determinante della RAH è sicuramente il suo organo. Quando è stato realizzato era il più grande nel Regno Unito - oggi il

secondo - ed è stato denominato The Thunderer per il grande rumore che genera. È formato da 9.999 canne e viene utilizzato più di 60 volte l’anno in diverse rappresentazioni. Ma la cosa che ci definisce maggiormente è la diversità dei programmi.

Offriamo un’incredibile varietà di spettacoli: dalla musica classica al pop, al rock, al circo, e poi la danza, l’opera, la musica internazionale, la commedia e addirittura il tennis… C’è veramente qualcosa per tutti.

I cinque spettacoli/concerti più importanti di questa stagione invernale.

Alice in Wonderland, with Danny Elfman’s memorable soundtrack played by a complete orchestra. The Nutcracker on Ice will be staged from 28th December, and promises thrills and spills and entertainment for the whole family.

Immediately after, in January, Cirque du Soleil returns to the Hall for their 20th year with their spectacular show Amaluna. The Elgar Room will host the UK Poetry Slam Finals on 9 and 10 January, and then a cabaret season with some of the country’s top names from the world of comedy.

What are the parameters you need to consider before selecting a performance or a concert?

We choose an event that fits with the Hall’s varied 90

history, and for which the promoter can sell more than 5,000 tickets. We plan up to five years ahead, and it’s rare to begin a year without most of our dates being filled. The challenge for us is that some artists work to very short timelines, so if our plans did not allow for a certain amount of flexibility we could miss out on some great opportunities.

For example, we’ve just hosted the world premiere of Spectre, the latest James Bond film, which certainly wasn’t planned five years ahead!

Who are the Royal Albert Hall’s target audience?

Our programme is so varied that there’s always something appealing and exciting for all those who love the performing arts. We cater for every single age group and every single audience type. For example,

Scegliamo un evento che ben si colloca nella ricca storia della Hall e di cui il promotore possa vendere più di 5000 biglietti.

Programmiamo addirittura con cinque anni di anticipo ed è raro iniziare un anno senza che la maggior parte delle nostre date siano occupate. La sfida per noi è che alcuni artisti lavorano con un orizzonte temporale molto più ridotto, per cui se i nostri programmi non ammettessero una certa flessibilità, potremmo perdere grandi opportunità…

Per esempio, abbiamo appena ospitato la prima mondiale del nuovo film di James Bond, Spectre, che non era certo stato programmato con cinque anni di anticipo!

Che tipo di pubblico richiama la Royal Albert Hall?

Il nostro programma è così ricco e vario che c’è sempre qualcosa di attraente, eccitante e coinvolgente per tutti coloro che amano l’arte e la scienza.

we have storytelling sessions for 0 to 4 year olds in one of our porches, and concerts especially for the elderly, and everybody finds a home here.

Which was the most successful performance ever held at the RAH? Our most regular performer is probably Eric Clapton, and every show he does is a sell-out. Bob Dylan’s concerts in 1965 and ’66 went down in rock history. In terms of popularity, the Hall hosted a show by ABBA in the ‘Seventies when we received 3.5 million requests for the 5,000 tickets available. And then there are the BBC Proms series, the world’s biggest and best classical music festival.

In addition to the great concert season, does the RAH offer any other services?

We have seven dining spaces,

An exceptional, newly renovated museum that houses 750 marble, bronze and silver statues and reliefs, masterpieces of medieval and Florentine Renaissance sacred art and sculpture.

ollowing major work to completely renovate and double the space, the new Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, which houses the world’s largest concentration of medieval and Florentine Renaissance sacred art and sculpture, opened on 29 October in Florence. Among its 750 works are marble, bronze and silver statues and reliefs by some of the greatest artists of the era: Michelangelo, Donatello, Arnolfo di Cambio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Andrea Pisano, Antonio del Pollaiuolo, Luca della Robbia, Andrea del Verrocchio and many others. Over 200 works visible to the public for the first time after restoration include Donatello’s Penitent Mary Magdalene, Lorenzo Ghiberti’s North Gate for the Baptistry and twenty-seven panels embroidered in gold and polychrome silk designed by Antonio del Pollaiuolo.

Visiting it is like a jolt to the heart and mind – it’s hard to explain the welter of feelings evoked by this perfect fusion of past (the art) and future (the way of recounting it) in any other way. Seeing it with an exceptional mentor such as Monsignor Timothy Verdon, director of the Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di

Firenze and visionary author of the salient changes to the Museum, is a real experience.

It was he who conceived the spectacular Hall of the Ancient Façade (36 metres x 20 x 20) a monumental stage set in the form of a four-story life size replica (in resin and marble dust) of the façade by Arnolfo di Cambio started in 1296, never finished and torn down in 1587. Forty of the marble statues from the 14th and 15th centuries sculpted for the façade by Arnolfo di Cambio, Donatello, Nanni di Banco and others have been placed in their original positions. On the opposite side of the room are the Gates of Paradise (1425-52), as Michelangelo called them, “once more facing the Cathedral facade as it looked in Ghiberti’s day, re-establishing a visual and iconographic harmony that was lost for over four centuries”, according to Timothy Verdon. Alongside the Gates of Paradise is the Baptistry’s famous North Door - and in the future also Andrea Pisano’s South Door - restored by the Opificio delle Pietre Dure (which also restored Donatello’s Magdalene and other works in the collection) with superb results beyond all expectations. 600 years after

Il 29 ottobre ha aperto a Firenze il ritrovato, dopo un importante lavoro di ampliamento, Museo dell’Opera del Duomo, che conserva la maggiore collezione al mondo di arte e scultura sacra medievale e rinascimentale fiorentina. 750 opere tra statue e rilievi in marmo, bronzo e argento, tra cui capolavori dei maggiori artisti del tempo: Michelangelo, Donatello, Arnolfo di Cambio, Lorenzo Ghiberti, Andrea Pisano, Antonio del Pollaiolo, Luca della Robbia, Andrea del Verrocchio e molti altri ancora. Oltre 200 opere visibili per la prima volta al pubblico dopo il restauro, tra queste la Maddalena di Donatello, la Porta Nord di Lorenzo Ghiberti per il Battistero di Firenze e i ventisette pannelli ricamati in oro e sete policrome su disegno di Antonio del Pollaiolo.

Visitarlo è un corto circuito di cuore e testa; difficile spiegare in altro modo l’insieme di sensazioni che questa perfetta fusione tra passato (l’arte) e futuro (il modo di raccontarla) può far scaturire. Vederlo con un mentore eccezionale come Monsignor Timothy Verdon, direttore del Museo dell’Opera del Duomo di Firenze e visionario ideatore dei passaggi salienti del Museo, è una vera e propria esperienza.

Sua la firma dell’allestimento della spettacolare Sala dell’Antica facciata (36 metri 20 x 20), dove su un lato è stato realizzato un colossale modello (in resina e polvere di marmo) in scala 1:1 dell’antica facciata del Duomo di Firenze realizzata da Arnolfo di Cambio a partire dal 1296, mai finita e distrutta nel 1587.

Davanti a questa titanica quinta, ricostruita sulla base di un disegno cinquecentesco, saranno collocate 40 statue del Tre e primo Quattrocento originariamente realizzate per la facciata da artisti quali Arnolfo di Cambio, Donatello e Nanni di Banco. Sul lato opposto della sala, la Porta del Paradiso (1425-52), chiamata così da Michelangelo “che tornerà a occupare una posizione frontale rispetto all’antica facciata del Duomo, ricostruendo un rapporto visivo e iconografico perso oltre 400 anni or sono”, afferma Timothy Verdon. A fianco della Porta del Paradiso la celebre Porta Nord del Battistero di Firenze, e in futuro anche la Porta Sud di Andrea Pisano, che è stata restaurata dall’Opificio delle Pietre Dure (suo anche l’intervento sulla Maddalena di Donatello e altre opere della collezione) con dei risultati eccezionali al di là di ogni

its construction, the beautiful original gilding of the sculpted reliefs in 28 panels, the heads of Prophets and Sibyls, and friezes of plant motifs teeming with small animals has finally re-emerged from beneath a coating of dirt and incrustations. The restoration was financed with private funds made available by the Opera di Santa Maria del Fiore along with the Guild of the Dome Association, which includes entrepreneurs from around the world. Also on the first floor are three smaller rooms that house the works of greater spiritual impact created for the Baptistry and the Cathedral – a reliquaries chapel, a room of votive altarpieces with Donatello’s Penitent Mary Magdalene in the centre, and finally a kind of sanctuary in pietra serena, where in an 94

almost mystical atmosphere, enhanced by soft light, that invites contemplation, is Michelangelo’s Bandini Pietà, his last sculpture.

“We have to adapt to the times we’re living in – for visitors with little time, and there are many of them, these two sections alone are a display of great interest” explains Monsignor Verdon, underscoring an ability to anticipate a more immediate, not necessarily more superficial, way of experiencing art. Upstairs is the Giotto’s Belltower Gallery, 36 meters long, with 16 life-size statues - including Donatello’s magnificent prophets Habakkuk, Jeremiah, The Prophet Imberbe and The Sacrifice of Isaac. This room, like the one on the top floor of the same size,

“Bisogna rimanere legati all’epoca che stiamo vivendo: per visitatori con poco tempo, e sono numerosi, già queste due sezioni costituiscono un percorso di grande interesse” spiega Monsignor Verdon, che sottolinea la sua capacità di anticipare un modo di vivere l’arte più veloce, non necessariamente più superficiale.

has openings from which you see the impressive model of Arnolfo’s facade of the Duomo, as part of a continuous visual dialogue. Museums within the museum are the Brunelleschi’s Dome Gallery (1418-1436), also on the first floor, with 15th century wooden models and the Donatello and Luca della Robbia Choir Lofts Gallery with two big pulpits made between 1431 and 1439 for the cathedral. Alongside are an octagonal room with 25 reliefs from the sixteenthcentury choir loft by Baccio Bandinelli, and the Silver Altar Room containing works that were part of the “Baptistry Treasury “. On the second floor of the museum, another gallery houses late 16th and early 16th century works - large wooden models by Bernardo Buontalenti, Giovanni

Antonio Dosio and Gherardo Silvani for the new facade of the Duomo, to replace that dismantled in 1587. At the end of the gallery is a little room where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of Brunelleschi’s Dome. Our tour ends on a terrace on the third floor with another splendid view of the Cathedral. If you stretch out your hand, it’s as if you can almost touch the marble, while your eyes drink in all its history and grandeur. Open from 9.00 to 7.00pm, a single 15 euro ticket gives admittance not only to the Museum, but also to the Baptistry, Giotto’s Bell Tower, Brunelleschi’s Dome and the Crypt of Santa Reparata, giving visitors the chance to surround themselves with the power and splendour of 16th century Florence.

Artful architectures Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris and the Whitney Museum in New York. Two must-sees Fondation Louis Vuitton a Parigi e Whitney Museum di New York. Da non perdere

C

ontemporary art has two new pôle d’attraction that you absolutely can’t miss if you’re in Paris or New York.

A magnificently futuristic structure has stood in Paris’ sixteenth arrondissement, against the backdrop of Bois de Boulogne trees, for more than a year now. This striking building is the Fondation Louis Vuitton, commissioned in 2001 by its namesake fashion house and carried to completion by the Canadian architect Frank Gehry: “What inspired me was the idea of constructing a glass building in the Bois de Boulougne, otherwise it could have easily seemed invasive. Something evanescent…and costly. But it couldn’t have been done another way.”

The project brought about an incredible 12,000 square meter building, 48 meters high. Building the structure, which required more than 1500 tons of steel, also took more than 10 years and 90 million euro. All the curves, waves and spirals, typical of the Canadian architect, were created with 3600 panels of tempered glass. The interior is just as spectacular: there’s an auditorium, 11 permanent contemporary art 96

galleries and ample space for temporary exhibitions.

The site of Bois de Boulogne was made possible thanks to the city of Paris, and the city will continue to own it for 55 years. Beyond its aesthetic beauty, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is a pilot project for the development of a new Hqe (Haute Qualité Environnementale) standard: what’s innovative about the project is that the materials used are all chosen based on their low environmental impact and balanced carbon emission. Rainwater is filtered and repurposed for use in cleaning the translucent surfaces and filling the basin that surrounds the building. The use of geothermal energy allows for air conditioning.

“For Paris, the Fondation Louis Vuitton is, more than anything, a new cultural adventure. It’s another site devoted to contemporary art, a place characterized by relationships with artists, with the French public and with the entire world. It aims to spur visitors’ emotions and prompt reflection by creating a spontaneous dialogue,” Explained its complex and fascinating figure, Bernard Arnault,

Ormai da più di un anno, nel sedicesimo arrondissement di Parigi, tra gli alberi del Bois de Boulogne ondeggia una astronave meravigliosa.

E’ la Fondation Louis Vuitton, commissionata nel 2001 dall’omonima casa di moda e realizzata dall’architetto canadese Frank Gehry: «Ciò che mi ha ispirato è stata l’idea di costruire un edificio di vetro nel Bois, altrimenti avrebbe potuto facilmente sembrare invasivo.

Qualcosa di evanescente….e costoso. Ma non si poteva fare altrimenti».

Il progetto ha dato vita a un edificio di 12mila mq che raggiunge un’altezza di 48 metri. Per costruire la struttura, che ha richiesto più di 1500 tonnellate di acciaio, sono stati impiegati più di 10 anni e 90 milioni di euro.Tutte le curve, le onde e le spirali tipiche dell’architetto canadese che costituiscono la costruzione sono state realizzate con 3600 pannelli in vetro temperato.

L’interno è altrettanto spettacolare: vi si possono infatti trovare un auditorium, 11 gallerie permanenti di

arte contemporanea ed ampi spazi per la realizzazione di esposizioni temporanee.

La città di Parigi ha reso disponibile il sito nel Bois de Boulogne e ne rimarrà proprietaria per 55 anni.

Oltre la bellezza estetica, la Fondation Louis Vuitton è un progetto pilota per l’elaborazione di un nuovo standard Hqe (Haute Qualité Environnementale): l’innovazione investe la scelta di materiali a basso impatto sull’ambiente e l’attuazione di un’emissione bilanciata di carbonio. Le acque meteoriche sono poi filtrate e recuperate per l’utilizzo nella pulizia delle superfici traslucide e alimentano il bacino che circonda l’edificio.

Il ricorso alla geotermia consente la climatizzazione.

«Per Parigi, la Fondation Louis Vuitton è soprattutto una nuova avventura culturale. Si presenta come un altro luogo consacrato all’arte contemporanea, un luogo di relazione con gli artisti, con il pubblico francese e del mondo intero. The coordinates of the new Whitney Museum in NY are instead Gansevoort and Washington Street, in the Meatpacking District. The new Whitney reflects the legacy of the of the celebrated museum founded by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney in 1930 in Greenwhich Village, which in 1966 moved to the building planned by Marcel Breuer and Hamilton P. Smith, between 75th Street and Madison Avenue. The new museum has 8 floors, with the complete exhibition space totaling 5,800 square meters: 4,600 of these are covered, while the other 1,200 are part of a terrace with a view over the Hudson River. Workshop spaces, a study center, two theatres 98

and various public services, including a 6,000 square meter hall, a restaurant, cafeteria and shop, deposit spaces and offices are all part of this Big Apple cultural center. In 2008, when the permanent collection reached more than 19,000 pieces, authorities determined that the Whitney needed a new, larger building, and Renzo Piano was tasked with planning the new museum.

Opened last spring, after 7 years of construction work, the localization of the new building is strategic: the Whitney moved from the Upper East Side to Lower Manhattan, on a land lot with a view of the Hudson River. The museum is found on the far end of the High Line, the linear urban park that quickly became

owner of the first (lapizzafresca. com) is a former Marine who returned from the NATO base in Gaeta in the ‘90s, deciding to bring real Neapolitan pizza to New York. The chef has always been strictly Neapolitan. At Ribalta (ribaltarestaurants. com), the names of the owners are enough to ensure the authenticity of their pizza: Rosario Procino and chef Pasquale Cozzolino. Here, their flour and fresh mozzarella are both imported from Naples, and the spacious setting is truly a ‘meraviglia,’ as they say in the homeland. Serving imported Neapolitan flour and buffalo mozzarella, there’s also Kestè (kestepizzeria. com), registered with the Associazione Pizzaiuoli

Napoletani, which allows the use of its trademark only after audits. The owner’s name is a guarantee of authenticity here, too: Roberto Caporuscio. We have to give credit to some of the big chains like Pomodoro Rosso and Fratelli La Bufala: now, we can recommend Motorino (mororinopizza. com), whose Neapolitan pizza is authentic. Lastly, we can’t forget Co. (co-pane. com). A shop with a name this presumptuous could not be located in Manhattan. In the heart of Chelsea, Co. is the nearest mid-town pizzeria to those that we have already mentioned, and it’s a fifteenminute taxi ride to eat a good pizza, but maybe one that’s a slightly less “genuine.”

Lo chef è sempre stato rigorosamente napoletano. Qui sia la farina che la mozzarella di bufala sono importate fresche da Napoli e il cornicione è ‘na meraviglia!’

Farina napoletana e mozzarella di bufala anche da Kesté (kestepizzeria.com), iscritta alla Associazione Pizzaioli Napoletani, che consente l’uso del suo marchio solamente dopo un audit. Anche qui, il nome

del proprietario è una garanzia: Roberto Caporuscio. Vent’anni fa non ci saremmo azzardati di citarne una in questo contesto, ma dovendo dare il merito di aver diffuso la vera pizza napoletana anche in Italia proprio alle catene, come Rosso Pomodoro o Fratelli la Bufala, oggi possiamo consigliare Motorino (motorinopizza. com); la pizza è napoletana autentica. In conclusione, non potevamo tralasciare Co. (copane.com). Un locale dal nome così pretenzioso da chiamarsi azienda non poteva che trovarsi a Manhattan. Nel cuore di Chelsea, Co. è la pizzeria più vicina a Mid-Town tra quelle che abbiamo indicato, vale i quindici minuti di taxi, per mangiare una buona pizza e forse una pizza meno ‘verace’.

Biodiversity is our ticket. No other country in the world has a wealth of biodiversity like Italy does. Those who are able to convey this well in the kitchen tell the story and express the personality of our country through the feelings and sensations that are gifted to the taste buds.

What’s the basic ingredient to spark curiosity and flavor in cooking?

In my case, memory. In my family, cooking – I mean home cooking and strong flavors – has always been an impor112

What Eataly’s first thought for all guests who sit down at a Starhotels table?

That their decision to remain in the hotel for lunch or dinner must be rewarded with the best and highest caliber cooking, using seasonal produce and taking inspiration from the local area. At the same time, it must also guarantee – as part of a zero-food miles menu that is both focused and relatively short – a few, handpicked international dishes with a close attention to detail.

Nel mio caso, il ricordo. Nella mia famiglia la cucina, quella forte e casalinga, è sempre stata un elemento importante. La memoria dei sapori e dei profumi di quand’ero bambino è un filo rosso che mi aiuta tutti i giorni nelle scelte e negli accostamenti.

Gli stranieri che cosa amano della nostra cucina?

E’ la ciliegina sulla torta di ogni viaggio. Prima di Eataly, ho lavorato a lungo in grandi strutture alberghiere dove ho capito una cosa: la nostra cucina è allegria pura, è sorriso, sole, mare, gli stranieri la amano per questo.

Qual è il primo pensiero di Eataly rivolto agli ospiti che si siedono a un tavolo Starhotels?

Che la loro decisione di restare a pranzo o a cena in albergo deve essere ripagata da una cucina di qualità e di grande livello, mirata al prodotto del momento, e che dia slancio alla territorialità. Ma allo stesso tempo deve garantire, all’interno di una carta non chilometrica, ma ben raccolta e concentrata, pochi e ben selezionati piatti internazionali curati sotto ogni punto di vista.

by Eataly) - Tartare di manzo alla piemontese Only Fassona Piemontese beef from Consorzio della Granda finely chopped by hand (never ground as the meat mustn’t overheat to preserve its moisture) dressed with salt-cured anchovies (a legacy of the centuries-old route that linked Piedmont and Liguria), white onion, parsley, lemon, Ligurian extra-virgin olive oil, capers and egg.

by Eataly) - Trofie con il pesto Highly aromatic basil from Pra (which comes with a Slow Food guarantee), EVO oil from Taggiasca olives, pine nuts, garlic, salt, parmesan and fiore sardo cheese. Rome (Metropole, Apicio by Eataly - Michelangelo, The Dome by Eataly) - Abbacchio alla romana Its origins date back to the Ancient Romans. It’s made using actual Roman IGP suckling lambs. Their meat is tender, delicate and delicious. The dish is served with carciofi alla Giudia (fried artichokes) or with roast potatoes.

Naples (Terminus, Odeon by Eataly) - Pezzogna all’acqua pazza The “pezzogna” is a typical fish unique to the Gulf of Naples, which is why it’s only ever eaten really fresh. The “acqua pazza” is made from water, white wine – ideally local Falanghina - and Piennolo del Vesuvio tomatoes.

Dal XII secolo. Per il ripieno: 1/3 di lombo di maiale, 1/3 di prosciutto crudo di Parma, 1/3 di mortadella Bologna IGP. Il brodo è quello più leggero e raffinato fatto con cappone e manzo.

Firenze (Michelangelo, Assaggi by Eataly - Tuscany, Assaggi by Eataly) - Bistecca alla fiorentina E’ la Chianina IGP, la vera bistecca fiorentina, classica, sapida e succulenta, arroventata fuori e poco cotta all’interno.

Non va mai salata a crudo e

mai bucata con forchette o altro, perderebbe i succhi. A cottura ultimata, una macinata di pepe.

Viene fatto con i veri abbacchi romani IGP, agnelli da latte che non pesano più di cinque, sei chili dalle carni tenere, delicate e gustose e servito con i carciofi alla Giudia.

Napoli (Terminus, Odeon by Eataly) - Pezzogna all’acqua pazza La pezzogna è un pesce tipico e unico del Golfo di Napoli, motivo per cui quello che si mangia è solo freschissimo.

L’acqua pazza è acqua e vino bianco – ideale la Falanghina Locale - e pomodorini del Piennolo del Vesuvio.

L

uca Lo Presti, 52 years old, president of Pangea, sees himself as a madman. In the ‘90s, he was one of the very few cosmetic dentists in Europe. Then one day he came across Amnesty International, which is when his life changed. “It happened by accident, like when you walk down the street, see litter on the ground, stop and pick it up, without asking yourself if someone else really should be picking it up. You just do it,” he said, explaining that moment when he began seeing “the other half of the sky.” A new world opened up in his mind: one of human rights and the places where they are systematically violated. After about 10 years of volunteering for Amnesty International, Lo Presti founded Pangea, a nonprofit association working in Afghanistan, India and, since 2008, in Italy, where the work focuses on the protection of women’s rights and other ways of helping women in everyday life. In Italy, the association launched the project Piccoli Ospiti, supporting female victims of domestic violence and their children. “This is a project of love,” explained Luca Lo Presti, “because what we do is take mothers and children out of a hellish existence and
