É il secondo anno che gli alberghi della Costa Smeralda vengono gestiti per conto di Qatar Holding da Marriott International Inc., la più grande compagnia alberghiera del mondo che quest’anno compie 91 anni. Il grande successo si basa sui valori etici della compagnia, sulle iniziative commerciali e gli innumerevoli brand di Marriott che fanno la differenza nel mondo alberghiero.

Personalmente sono sempre più onorato di coordinare l’Area Costa Smeralda e sempre più innamorato dei nostri alberghi, stimolato dai nostri clienti e orgoglioso degli oltre 800 collaboratori: i veri artefici della unicità dei nostri alberghi.

Il 2018 segna l’inizio delle nuove esperienze in Costa Smeralda: grandi brand diventano nostri partner, come Matsuhisa Nobu, Novikov, Quattro Passi, Nikki Beach, la nascita di Nuna, il nostro ristorante peruviano a Porto Cervo, la nuova Pergola in Giardino e il Cala Beach Club. É curioso pensare a come particolari così unici, a volte sfuggano persino ad un occhio attento, come se volessero nascondersi per preservare la loro magia. Il nostro obiettivo è rinforzare la Sardegna come destinazione facendola diventare la meta turistica per eccellenza, e la Costa Smeralda il sogno di tutti.

Personally, I’m feeling even more honoured to coordinate Area Costa Smeralda, falling more in love with our hotels, driven by our guests and proud of more than 800 associates, the true masters of the uniqueness of our hotels. 2018 marks the New Experience in Costa Smeralda: big brands become our partners, like Matsuhisa Nobu, Novikov, Quattro Passi and Nikki Beach, the opening of Nuna, our Peruvian restaurant in Porto Cervo, the new Pergola in Giardino and the Cala Beach Club. Chi meglio di Marcello Fois può raccontarci cosa significa essere sardi, appartenere a questa terra anche se si vive lontano dal suo mare. E lui ci ha sorpreso raccontandoci una Sardegna diversa dal nostro immaginario, che la vuole da sempre intensa e forte. Una terra raffinata e complicata, quasi fragile, come dice lui ...

Partiamo dalla Sardegna, terra dove è nato, scenario di molti suoi libri. Qual è il valore aggiunto di questa terra?

Direi che da scrittore è assolutamente un privilegio essere nati in una terra di narrazioni che può vantare una tradizione letteraria tutt’altro che periferica. La mia terra è il senso primo della mia scrittura.

Who better than Marcello Fois can say what it means to be Sardinian, to belong to this land even staying far from its shores. And we remained surprised by his telling about Sardinia that is different from what is familiar image in our heads. It’s a refined and complicated land, almost fragile, as he says…

Let’s start with Sardinia, where you were born and where many of your books are set. What’s the added value of this land?

As a writer, I would say that it’s an absolute privilege to be born in a land of stories that boasts a literary tradition that’s anything but marginal. My home is at the basis of my writing.

COSMHO STORY

‘MY SARDINIA IS MUCH LESS ARCHAIC THAN WHAT IS ENVISAGED’

Mare ma anche una terra forte, intensa, ricca di storie e leggende. La sua Sardegna?

L’intensità e la fortezza sono spesso categorie che attengono alla percezione piuttosto che al carattere vero e proprio. Quando penso a noi sardi “forti e intensi” non sono i primi aggettivi che mi vengono in mente.

Penso piuttosto a “troppo raffinati e complessi per sopravvivere”. Ma qualche volta bisogna piegarsi a queste percezioni di orgoglio diffuso che ormai ci sovrastano. La mia Sardegna è più attuale e meno interessata ad essere “resistenziale” di quanto la vulgata ami rappresentarla; assai meno arcaica da come viene disegnata e assai meno consolatoria di quella in cui noi sardi per primi tendiamo a rifugiarci.

Identità e appartenenza ai luoghi d’origine caratterizzano lei e i suoi protagonisti. Quali sono i cardini di questo legame?

Non mi interrogo mai su questioni identitarie perché sono convinto che lo stesso domandarsi le metta in dubbio, non ho dubbi sul colore dei miei capelli, ormai sale e pepe, o sul colore dei miei occhi; la mia statura è quella che è: sono dati di fatto. Interrogarsi sulla sardità vuol dire normalizzare un patrimonio enormemente complesso, e vuol dire, in qualche modo, delimitarne le possibilità di sviluppo. So che sono sardo, lo attesta il mio certificato di nascita, ma non voglio che si limiti in nessun modo la possibilità di sperimentare che sardo posso essere. I cardini dunque non possono essere che coscienza di sé, del proprio posto nel mondo, della propria storia. Rifiuto di ogni tendenza consolatoria.

Una scrittura poetica e evocativa, come è arrivato a questo modo di scrivere così personale?

Passando attraverso la venerazione per l’esercizio della lettura. Sono un lettore compulsivo. E dunque uno scrittore per invidia. Fin da bambino volevo poter suscitare quella stessa meraviglia che mi attraversava ogni volta che leggevo un grande libro. Il giorno in cui sarò troppo soddisfatto della mia scrittura

There’s sea, but also a land that’s strong and intense, rich in stories and legends. What’s your Sardinia?

Intensity and strength are often categories that tend towards perception rather than the character itself. When I think about us Sardinians, “strong and intense” aren’t the first adjectives that come to my mind. I instead think about us as “too refined and complicated to survive”. But sometimes we need to cede to these perceptions of the widespread pride that by now dominates us. It is more current and less interested in being one of “resistance” than what is commonly said about us; much less archaic than what is envisaged and much less comforting than the one in which we Sardinans are the first to take refuge.

Identity and belonging to one’s homeland characterize you and your protagonists. What are the cornerstones of this bond?

I never ask myself questions about identity because I’m convinced that the very act of asking puts one in doubt. I have no doubts about the colour of my hair, by now salt and pepper, or the colour of my eyes; my stature is what it is: they’re facts of life. Questioning ourselves about our “Sardinianness” means standardizing an enormously complex patrimony, and means in some way delimiting its possibility to develop. I know I’m Sardinian, my birth certificate proves it, but I don’t want for it to limit in any way the chance to experiment with what kind of Sardinian I can be. The cornerstones, then, can’t be but self-consciousness and awareness about our place in the world and our history. I refuse any consolatory tendency.

Yours is a poetic and evocative writing. How did you come upon such a personal way of writing?

Through venerating the practice of writing. I’m a compulsive reader. I’m also an ardent writer. Ever since I was a child, I’ve wanted to be able to express that same wonder that I feel every time I read a great

book. The day I’m too satisfied with my writing is the day I’ll stop writing, but I’ll never give up reading.

The Chironi family is the protagonist of a trilogy set on the Island. What are the fundamental traits of this family and the Sardinian people?

In this family saga, I tried to conform as much as possible to the precepts of that literary genre: the place where it takes place, the period of time in which the story unfolds, the precise passage from one generation to the next. This allows the stories to be local and global at the same time. So the fundamental traits of the Chironi, each with their own differences, are, in this sense, the same as the Malavoglia, the Buddenbrook, the Melrose and so on…

Your last book, Del dirsi addio, is set very far from the Island. What drove you to “leave” for a bit, from the literary point of view?

I tried to experiment with a Sardinian writing outside of Sardinia. This story, set in Bolzano, is really very Sardinian in its sensitivity and, I’d even say, it’s grammar. But then again, I’m a mountain Sardinian.

Your next projects?

Writing. I have a novel to finish and another to start.

As long as this enthusiasm sustains me, I’m going to continue with it.

In questa saga familiare ho cercato di attenermi il più possibile ai dettami di quel genere letterario: il luogo dove si svolge, il periodo di tempo in cui si sviluppa, il preciso passaggio da una generazione all’altra. Questo permette alle storie di essere locali e globali allo stesso tempo. Perciò i tratti fondamentali dei Chironi, fatte le debite differenze, sono, in questo senso, gli stessi dei Malavoglia, dei Buddenbrook, dei Melrose e così via…

Il suo ultimo libro, Del dirsi addio, è ambientato molto lontano dall’isola. Cosa l’ha spinta a “partire” per un po’, a livello letterario?

Ho provato a sperimentare una scrittura sarda fuori dalla Sardegna. Questa storia bolzanina è davvero molto sarda nel sentimento e direi persino nella grammatica. Ma del resto io sono un sardo di montagna.

I suoi prossimi progetti?

Scrivere. Ho un romanzo da finire e uno da iniziare.

Finché mi sorregge questo entusiasmo continuerò.

Lei è Francesca Dordei, 30 anni: da Cagliari al Cern di Ginevra per studiare l’antimateria al fianco di premi Nobel come Peter Higgs e François Englert (ricordate il bosone di Higgs, la “particella di Dio”?). Francesca ci è arrivata per merito, dopo tanto studio, scelta tra i migliori studenti di tutto il mondo. Lui è Gigi Datome, 31 anni, il primo sardo e il quarto cestista azzurro in epoca recente ad aver giocato in NBA. Nato in Veneto nel 1987, a Montebelluna, la città della madre, ma cresciuto a Olbia dove si è formato nella società del padre (Santa Croce), ora gioca nel Fenerbahce di Istanbul, con cui ha vinto l’Eurolega nel 2017.

Per entrambi la Sardegna non è solo la terra d’origine, il luogo della famiglia e degli affetti, il trampolino di lancio dei loro sogni avverati, ma qualcosa di ancora più profondo che nessun altro posto nel mondo può sostituire: “Non c’è niente che mi faccia sentire più a casa che passeggiare nel cuore di Cagliari, in quei vicoli stretti dove il vento si incanala scompigliando i capelli – racconta ad esempio Francesca Dordei - e quando meno te l’aspetti si aprono su viste mozzafiato sul mare. Chiudo gli occhi, respiro forte e mi sento nel mio posto”.

Quali sono, Francesca, gli elementi che rendono questa regione un luogo unico nel mondo?

La prima cosa che colpisce della Sardegna sono le sue spiagge, uniche e bellissime, e la cucina con i suoi piatti di mare tipici, dai ricci di mare alla bottarga. Ma il suo vero cuore si trova lontano dalle coste, là dove tutto è nato. Qui si scoprono i resti del periodo nuragico, i piatti tipici di terra, i formaggi e le carni, le persone parlano ancora in sardo e il tempo sembra scorrere più lentamente. Sarà un caso che proprio qui si trovi un’altissima percentuale di centenari?

Gigi, c’è un luogo particolare che senti il bisogno di rivedere quando torni in Sardegna?

Cala Moresca è il mio angolo di paradiso. Ogni volta che

Francesca got there by merit, after years of studies, chosen from amongst the top students from around the world.

His name is Gigi Datome, 31 years old, the first Sardinian and the fourth Italian basketball player in recent times to have played in the NBA. Born in Veneto in 1987, in Montebelluna, his mother’s home town, he grew up in Olbia, where he trained in his father’s sports club (Santa Croce), and he now plays for Fenerbahçe in Istanbul, which won the Eurolega in 2017.

For both, Sardinia isn’t just their homeland, the place where their families and loved ones are, the springboard for the dreams they’ve achieved; it’s something even deeper that no other place in the world can replace: “Nothing makes me feel more at home than strolling through the heart of Cagliari, down those narrow streets that funnel the wind, whipping my hair into disarray,” Francesca Dordei tells us, “and when you least expect it, you suddenly come upon breathtaking views of the sea. I close my eyes, breathe deeply, and feel at home.”

Francesca, what is it that makes this region so unique in the world?

The first thing that strikes you about Sardinia is its beaches, one-of-a-kind and incredibly beautiful, and the cuisine, made of typical seafood dishes, from sea urchins to bottarga. But its true heart can be found far away from the coast, where everything began. Here, you discover traces of the Nuragic period, typical dishes with vegetables, cheeses and meats, people who still speak Sardinian and places where time slows down. Is it a coincidence that this is where

ci vado mi sento a casa, in contatto con l’isola: è un posto in cui mi sento in pace col mondo e in cui posso smaltire le tossine della stagione trascorsa.

Francesca, qual è invece la cosa che ti manca di più?

Le lunghe estati, fatte di cieli azzurri che durano mesi, dell’arancione dei tramonti e del verde cristallino del mare.

Ma soprattutto il profumo che si respira. Appena arrivi in Sardegna il vento ti avvolge subito con l’odore salmastro dell’acqua che si fonde con il profumo di lentisco della macchia mediterranea, un mix che non ho mai trovato altrove.

E poi, la colazione con la pizzetta sfoglia!

Gigi, hai mai ospitato colleghi di squadra in Sardegna?

La mia famiglia gestisce un hotel a Golfo Aranci da più di 30 anni e tanti compagni di squadra sono venuti a trovarmi.

Belinelli, Gallinari, Poeta, Mordente, Cusin, Cittadini, solo per nominare i più conosciuti.

Francesca, secondo te qual è il momento più bello dell’anno per visitare la Sardegna?

Consiglio a tutti di visitare l’isola nel mese di maggio, almeno una volta nella vita. Magari per la festa di Sant’Efisio, che trasforma Cagliari in un caleidoscopio di colori e tradizioni. E’ un tripudio di bellissimi abiti sardi accompagnati dal suono delle launeddas, antichissimo strumento a fiato tipico della mia regione. Quando poi tutta via Roma

Gigi, is there a particular place that you need to visit whenever you come home?

Cala Moresca is my corner of paradise. Every time I go there I feel at home, in contact with Sardinia. It’s the place where I feel at peace with the world, where I can rid myself of the toxins of the previous season.

Francesca, what do you miss the most?

The long summers, with their blue skies that last for months, the orange of the sunsets and the crystal clear emerald green sea. But I mostly miss the aromas in the air. Gigi, have you ever hosted your teammates in Sardinia?

My family has managed a hotel in Golfo Aranci for more than 30 years, and many of my teammates have come to visit me. Belinelli, Gallinari, Poeta, Mordente, Cusin and Cittadini, just to name a few.

La Sardegna permette di godere di cieli stellati indimenticabili. Spingetevi verso l’interno, sistematevi in prossimità di uno dei tanti nuraghi che la popolano e godrete di una notte magica. Per gustarsi la lettura di un buon libro in tranquillità consiglio Cala Domestica, una piccola insenatura tra i monti dell’Iglesiente a cui si accede a piedi da una piccola grotta e con un caratteristico mare verde smeraldo.

Francesca, c’è qualcosa di autenticamente sardo nel tuo carattere?

Sono molto riflessiva, un tratto che si sviluppa naturalmente guardando il mare in inverno, quando si può godere in silenzio del rumore delle onde.

Three tips for experiencing Sardinia in the summer?

Sardinia is a place where you can enjoy unforgettable starry skies. Head inland, settle down next to one of the many nuraghe found in the area and enjoy a magical night. If you want to read a good book in peace and quiet, I recommend Cala Domestica, a small cove nestled in the mountains of the Iglesiente that boats characteristic emerald-green waters, which you can get to on foot through a small grotto.

Francesca, is there anything authentically Sardinian in your character?

I’m very meditative, which is a trait that develops naturally when you look out at the sea in the wintertime, when you can enjoy the sound of the waves breaking on the sea, surrounded by silence.

Poche regioni possono vantare origini tanto misteriose quanto suggestive come la Sardegna.

Terra aspra, isola che fonda le sue attività non sulla pesca ma sulla pastorizia, abitata da genti non solo tra le più longeve, ma anche storicamente organizzate per via matrilineare. Non sarà mica per quell’impronta lasciata da Giove?

Già, perché secondo una leggenda, la Sardegna altro non sarebbe che la paradisiaca Tirrenide sconvolta un giorno da maremoti e terremoti tanto da rischiare di sparire negli abissi.

Ma come si racconta, Giove bloccò la deriva dell’ultimo scampolo di terra fermandolo col piede e dando così all’isola la foggia della sua impronta, Ichnusa, appunto, o Shardana. Solo leggenda? Forse, ma intanto c’è chi è pronto a scommettere che la mitica Atlantide fosse proprio l’isola di smeraldo. Perché altrimenti Giove avrebbe dovuto scomodarsi tanto? A sostenerlo è l’archeologo Sergio Frau che col suo Le Colonne d’Ercole, un’inchiesta, ipotizza lo spostamento dei confini del mondo allora noto, non a Gibilterra ma allo Stretto di Messina. La

Could the island be that footprint left by Jupiter?

Right, because according to a legend, Sardinia is none other than that heavenly Tirrenide, so devastated one day by tidal waves and earthquakes that it risked disappearing into the abyss. But the story goes that Jupiter blocked the last remnant of land from drifting away, shaping it with his foot and giving the island the appearance of a footprint, Ichnusa, or Shardana. Only a legend?

Perhaps, but there are nevertheless those who are ready to bet that the mythical Atlantis was the emerald island itself. Why else would Jupiter have gone to such trouble? Non ultimo quello di Aristeo, figlio di Apollo e Cirene, che dopo aver fondato Caralis la moderna Cagliari, avrebbe anche insegnato agli uomini l’arte del fare il formaggio. Pater, dio dei sardi nuragici (di cui resterebbe traccia anche di un tempio) tra i più arcani abitanti dell’isola che ora, nella sua ultima fatica Shardana e Sardegna, l’archeologo Giovanni Ugas, cerca invece di svelare. of the Sardus Pater, one of the most mysterious gods of the Nuragic civilization (of which traces of a temple exist), who archeologist Giovanni Ugas seeks to unveil in his latest work Shardana e Sardegna. Based on his recent research, Ugas claims that the Nuragic people were none other than the Sherden, the sea peoples that defeated the Hittites and later the Egyptians. They weren’t so much bandits as they were valiant soldiers who populated the ill-tempered Sardinia.

Though while the history of the island is still cloaked in mystery, the Janas fairies cast a bit of light on it, who, it is said, had translucent skin. Legend says that to keep their skin pure, they only killed at night: so they wouldn’t be lacerated by the bramble, they had the power to glow and find the right road.

Simple fireflies? Maybe, but they’re so fascinating that they make Sardinia’s nights all the more intriguing.

Li abbiamo incontrati tra un volo e l’altro, all’indomani del grande successo di New York. Abbiamo parlato di lavoro, passione, vacanze e naturalmente Costa Smeralda, dove quest’anno sono presenti anche con due boutique gioiello al Pitrizza e al Romazzino.

Moda e territorio: le vostre creazioni parlano sempre di più della nostra terra nel mondo. Cosa vi pia-

We met them between flights, on the heels of their great success in New York. We spoke about work, passion, holidays and, of course, the Costa Smeralda, where this year there are two dazzling boutiques at the Pitrizza and the Romazzino.

Fashion and territory: your creations increasingly speak about our homeland in the world. What do you like about this combination?

DD: Everything we do is tied to our homeland, to Italy, to its traditions, to the family we love so much. We’re Italian, we love our country and our roots. We like representing Italy at its best.

SG: We wanted to open boutiques that would reflect our strong bond with the territory, with the contribute of local artisans. For example, in Porto Cervo, we used yellow and blue glass inserts that recall the colours of Italian craftsmanship. While in Capri, the boutique has white terrazzo flooring with yellow, green and blue marble; the lime walls mixed with stones and pebbles are painted white and gold overlaid with blue. This type of finishing touch recalls the typical houses of southern Italy.

You’re back from a hugely successful event in NY. What can you tell us about that?

DD: Tutto quello che facciamo è legato alla nostra terra, all’Italia, alle tradizioni, alla famiglia a cui teniamo moltissimo. Noi siamo Italiani, amiamo il nostro Paese e le nostre radici. Ci piace rappresentare l’Italia al meglio.

SG: Abbiamo voluto realizzare delle boutique che rispecchiassero il nostro forte legame al territorio, avvalendoci dell’aiuto di artigiani locali. Per esempio, a Porto Cervo abbiamo utilizzato inserti in vetro giallo e azzurro che ricordano i colori della tradizione artigianale italiana. Mentre a Capri il pavimento della boutique è realizzato in seminato bianco con inserti in marmo giallo, verde e blu; le pareti in calce mista a sassi e ciottoli sono pitturate di bianco e di oro sovrapposto a blu. Questo tipo di finitura ricorda le case tipiche del sud Italia.

Arrivate da un evento di enorme successo a NY: ce lo raccontate?

DD: New York rappresenta la città in cui realizzare i propri sogni. Ci ha consentito di mostrare a tutto il mondo la nostra visione dell’Alta Moda. New York è una delle mie città del cuore, sono stati giorni pieni di emozioni.

DD: New York is the city where dreams come true. It allowed us to show the entire world our vision of Alta Moda. New York is one of my favourite cities, and those days were rich in emotions.

SG: The runway shows of Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria and the collection of Alta Gioielleria are inspired by New York, its spectacular skyscrapers, its skyline, its infinite lights and all those symbols that have made it famous around the world. We tried to recount, in our own way, the city and its magic. I love New York; its beauty is pure, simple, and you can sense that as you walk down the streets, from Central Park to Downtown. It’s the city of diversity and success.

Alta Moda for Dolce&Gabbana in a few words.

DD&SG: Our dream. At the beginning, no one would’ve believed that we would become successful, but in the end, our work and passion have paid off with great satisfaction. Alta Moda allows us to explore the furthest reaches of our creativity, to experiment, to organize events in incredible places throughout Italy and abroad. After the first Alta Moda runway show in Taormina in 2012, we began to get to know our clients more and more, extending the DG family.

We like to speak with them and share our feelings about the runway shows.

What is your Alta Gioielleria (high jewellery) line inspired by?

SG: Just like for Alta Moda, the Alta Gioielleria pieces we create are unique and are expressions of our creativity. The places we visit inspire us: we dedicated a beautiful brooch to New York, with the colours of the American flag, as well as a necklace with a pendant, with the words New York and several stars covered in rubies and diamonds.

DD: The clients themselves inspire us and ask us to be able to dream and create their desires: what we try to do is create pieces that are “miniature” dreams.

SG: Le sfilate di Alta Moda, Alta Sartoria e la collezione di Alta Gioielleria sono ispirate a New York, ai suoi spettacolari grattacieli, allo skyline, alle sue infinite luci e a tutti quei simboli che l’hanno resa famosa nel mondo. Abbiamo provato a raccontare, a nostro modo, la città e la sua magia. Adoro New York, la sua bellezza è pura, semplice, si percepisce camminando per le strade, da Central Park fino a Downtown. È la città delle diversità e del successo.

In poche parole l’Alta Moda per Dolce&Gabbana.

DD&SG: Il nostro sogno. All’inizio di tutto nessuno avrebbe creduto che ce l’avremmo fatta, ma alla fine, il lavoro e la passione ci hanno ripagati con grande soddisfazione. L’Alta Moda ci permette di esplorare la nostra creatività al massimo, sperimentare, organizzare eventi in luoghi meravigliosi d’Italia e non solo. Dalla prima sfilata di Alta Moda a Taormina nel 2012, abbiamo iniziato a conoscere sempre meglio i nostri clienti, allargando la DG Family. Ci piace parlare con loro, condividere le emozioni di una sfilata.

La linea di Alta Gioielleria a cosa si ispira?

SG: Come per l’Alta Moda, anche per l’Alta Gioielleria i pezzi che creiamo sono unici e sono l’espressione della nostra creatività. Sono proprio i luoghi che visitiamo che ci ispirano: abbiamo dedicato a New York una bellissima spilla che richiama i colori della bandiera americana e una collana con un pendente, la scritta New York e tante stelle ricoperte di rubini e diamanti.

DD: I clienti stessi ci ispirano e ci chiedono di poter sognare e realizzare i loro desideri: quello che proviamo a fare è realizzare dei gioielli che sono “sogni” in miniatura. Ci piacerebbe se una donna, indossando

Sardinia is a beautiful Island, full of traditions waiting to be discovered and colours, not just of the sea, but also the Island, the hills, the flowers.

Our country is extraordinary in every season.

SG: I love the sea and its thousands of colours, the small islands, from north to south…

The Costa Smeralda in an immage for Stefano and Domenico. How do you spend your vacations here?

DD&SG: The simplest picture, which happens every time we come here, is surely of us bathing off the coast with our family, nephews and friends.

DD: Cala di Volpe is an institution, an international tourist destination, a place to love in its entirety.

We chose this hotel because it’s the perfect stage for our high-end jewellery, capable of highlighting the importance of what we’ve created, a bond between nature and the best of hospitality.

This year you will open two boutiques at the Pitrizza and Romazzino: 40 sqm each, where Dolce & Gabbana will be presented to an international public. What will they be like?

DD&SG: The two boutiques will represent our idea of fashion, but each one in a different way depending on the hotel. The space at the Romazzino will be dedicated to what we call #DGFamily, the Men’s, Women’s and Children’s collections that we create according to the concept of mini-me. The space at the Pitrizza, on the other hand, will be dedicated to accessories made from special hides, our Fine Jewellery collection and our Men’s and Women’s Watch collections, which we create with passion and extreme attention to each and every detail.

DD: La gente, il cibo, le città e i piccoli borghi..la Sardegna è una terra bellissima, piena di tradizioni da scoprire e colori, non solo quelli del mare, ma anche quelli della terra, delle colline, dei fiori. Il nostro Paese è straordinario in ogni stagione dell’anno.

SG: Io amo il mare e i suoi mille colori, le piccole isole, dal nord al sud della Regione...

La Costa Smeralda in un’immagine per Stefano e Domenico. Come passate qui le vostre vacanze?

DD&SG: L’immagine più semplice e che si ripete ogni volta che veniamo, è sicuramente quella di noi che facciamo il bagno al largo delle coste insieme alla nostra famiglia, i nostri nipoti e amici.

DD: Il Cala di Volpe è un’istituzione, una destinazione internazionale del turismo, un luogo da amare in ogni suo angolo. Abbiamo scelto questo hotel perché è il palcoscenico perfetto per la nostra Alta Gioielleria, in grado di esaltare al massimo l’importanza di ciò che abbiamo creato, unione tra natura e eccellenza dell’ospitalità.

Quest’anno aprirete due boutique al Pitrizza e al Romazzino: 40 mq ciascuno per raccontare Dolce & Gabbana al pubblico internazionale. Come saranno?

DD&SG: Le due boutique rappresenteranno al massimo la nostra idea di moda, ma in modo diverso a seconda dell’hotel. Lo spazio al Romazzino sarà dedicato a quella che noi chiamiamo #DGFamily quindi alle Collezioni Uomo, Donna e Bambino che creiamo secondo il concetto del mini-me. Lo spazio invece al Pitrizza sarà dedicato agli accessori in pellami speciali, alla nostra Collezione Fine Jewellery e Orologi uomo e donna che creiamo con passione e estrema cura di ogni singolo particolare.

Non tutti hanno il privilegio di poter intervenire su un gioiello dell’architettura come l’Hotel Cala di Volpe. A suo tempo, per dargli vita, l’Aga Khan chiamò Jacques Couelle, creatore di quello che poi è diventato lo stile inconfondibile della Costa Smeralda. Sono iniziate quest’anno le prime opere di rinnovo, cominciate da alcune suite e le camere a loro adiacenti. Situate nel corpo centrale dell’Hotel, grazie alla loro posizione e alla vista spettacolare, sono tra le più richieste dagli ospiti affezionati. Per il progetto sono stati chiamati gli architetti di fama internazionale Bruno Moinard e Claire Betaille di 4BI & Associés.

Qual è stato il concept del progetto?

L’intento è stato quello di offrire una lettura contemporanea di questa struttura, preservandone l’anima, l’attaccamento alla terra e la sua caratteristica bellezza fatta di forme e contrasti.

Da dove avete tratto ispirazione?

Vivendolo. Non è possibile capire la poesia del luogo solo attraverso immagini e piante di progetto.

Quali materiali avete preferito usare? E perché?

In questo hotel c’è un uso meraviglioso del vetro. Solitamente il vetro è il materiale impalpabile per eccellenza, questo vetro invece ha uno spessore reale, materico, per certi aspetti brutale. Allo stesso tempo è di una semplicità emozionante.

Quale stile avete scelto per l’arredamento?

Ci siamo ispirati ai mobili originali dell’hotel. Ogni singolo oggetto d’arredo è stato progettato appositamente per queste camere. A primo impatto alcuni potrebbero sembrare degli assemblaggi di tronchi quasi casuali, poi però appare la raffinatezza delle finiture e la particolarità delle giunture. Tutte le componenti di legno sono come smussate e lucidate dal tempo e la purezza della forma è rilassante.

Not everyone has the privilege of intervening in an architectural gem like the Hotel Cala di Volpe. At its inception, Aga Khan called upon Jacques Couelle to design the building, creator of what would become the unmistakable style of the Costa Smeralda. The first renovation works began this year, starting with some suites and the adjacent rooms. Located in the core of the hotel, thanks to their position and spectacular view, they are among the most requested by returning guests. For the project, the internationally famous architects Bruno Moinard e Claire Betaille, of 4BI & Associés, were called in.

What was the concept for this project?

The intent was to offer a contemporary interpretation of this building, preserving its soul, bond with the land and characteristic beauty made of forms and contrasts.

Where did your inspiration come from?

Living it. It’s not possible to understand the poetry of the place solely through images and project plans.

What materials did you prefer to use and why?

In this hotel, there’s a magnificent use of glass. Usually glass is an imperceptible material par excellence, but this glass has real weight to it, it’s tactile, in some ways coarse. At the same time, there’s a touching simplicity to it.

What style did you choose for the interior design?

What’s the added value of these new rooms?

The essential characteristic is the rapport with the surrounding nature and local traditions, as well as extreme comfort, which exists thanks to an arrangement of the furniture that adapts to the guest’s needs and preferences, transforming the room into his/her bedroom for a day, a week, a memorable time.

What did this project mean to you?

It was a project well outside all the rules we know, a sort of “return to our roots”.

What did you think when you saw the hotel for the first time?

This place has a unique ability to wow anyone who stays in its bay. We were fascinated by the atmosphere, deeply tied to the 1960s but suspended in time. To stay there is like living in a sculpture. It’s a work of art, with a very unique spirit.

What is your idea of luxury?

We love to immerse ourselves in the place where we’re working and based on this, tell stories that are always different. Beyond the “rules” normally tied to the concept of luxury, we believe that every aspect must be personalized so they can create a sense of surprise and encourage memories. Only the places where the creator’s mark is unique and perceptible can find themselves indelibly imprinted in the mind of those who experience them. The Cala di Volpe is special for this reason. You constantly find surprises. They come from the originality, from a sort of nudity that describes the new concept of luxury, a bit like Arte Povera. It’s imperfection, in its intelligence, that creates impalpable sensations. An absolute peace, outside the world.

Cosa avete pensato quando avete visto l’hotel per la prima volta?

Questo luogo ha la singolare capacità di meravigliare chiunque trovi rifugio nella sua baia. Siamo rimasti affascinati dall’atmosfera, profondamente legata agli anni ‘60, ma sospesa nel tempo. Stare lì è come vivere in una scultura. È un’opera d’arte, con un’anima molto particolare.

Qual è la vostra idea di lusso?

Amiamo immergerci nel luogo in cui lavoriamo e in base a questo raccontare storie sempre diverse.

Oltre alle ‘regole’ normalmente legate al concetto di lusso, riteniamo che ogni aspetto debba essere personalizzato, in modo da generare sorpresa e imprimere ricordi. Solo i luoghi dove il segno della mano è unico e percepibile possono fissarsi in maniera indelebile nella mente di chi li vive. Il Cala di Volpe è speciale per questo. Lì la sorpresa è costante, si origina dalla semplicità, da una sorta di nudità che descrive un nuovo lusso, un po’ come l’arte povera. È l’imperfezione, nella sua intelligenza, a creare vibrazioni indefinibili. Una pace assoluta, fuori dal mondo.

Il pranzo al barbecue è diventato un must, con i suoi profumi e le preparazioni non banali. Il pomeriggio, poi, si declina secondo le variabili, che possono essere gli amici in hotel o il tempo, scegliendo tra la lettura, una nuotata in piscina o il tornare sulla spiaggia.

The days completely change rhythm, and in the morning, we enjoy breakfast either in our room or out on the terrace. Then we go downstairs for a coffee at the pool-side bar and calmly make our way to the beach, returning to the hotel around 2.30-3.00pm. The barbecue lunch is a must, with its aromas and exciting preparations. The afternoon changes depending on a variety of things, like friends at the hotel or weather, choosing between reading, a dip in the pool or heading back to the beach.

La sera può essere in albergo o, se qualcosa ci incuriosisce o ci attrae, partecipiamo a qualche serata fuori.

La Sardegna che amiamo abbiamo cominciato a conoscerla quando è nato il Cala di Volpe e ne apprezziamo profondamente i colori e i profumi, la terra e le sue peculiarità.

E con questi ne amiamo le persone che, anno dopo anno, arrivano e - come noi - se ne innamorano creando spontaneamente un gruppo di amici e habitué da tutto il mondo, con i quali si scambiano impressioni, sensazioni, esperienze dell’inverno appena trascorso che qui assumono il loro valore e la loro misura. Tutto questo senza che l’hotel cambi in quelli che sono i suoi punti di forza, ovvero la tranquillità, l’ospitalità squisita, le attenzioni discrete e perfette, la quotidianità che avvolge di benessere e cura dell’ospite. Una piacevole costante è la sensazione di sentirsi a casa, soggiornando nella medesima suite, incontrando membri del personale che ci conoscono e sanno quali siano i nostri gusti e i nostri ritmi. Come accade con il concierge che indovina anno dopo anno quali siano gli eventi cui avremmo piacere di partecipare senza sbagliare mai; o il ristorante dove il maître e il sommelier ci propongono ogni volta l’abbinamento perfetto per la nostra serata; e non ultimo al bar dove Andrea e i suoi collaboratori ci portano il drink giusto al momento giusto. Quelle stesse persone competenti e affabili che d’inverno incontriamo con lo stesso piacere e affetto a Gstaad e Sankt Moritz.

We fell in love with Sardinia when the Cala di Volpe opened, and we deeply appreciate its colours and fragrances, the land and its unique characteristics. We also love the people that come here year after year and – like us – fall in love with this place, spontaneously creating groups of friends and habits from all over the world, exchanging impressions, feelings, stories about our recent winters, which take on their value and their magnitude here. All this without the hotel changing its strengths, like its tranquillity, exquisite hospitality, discreet and perfect attention or the everyday imbued with well-being and guest care.

A pleasant constant is that you feel at home here, staying in the same suite, meeting staff members that remember us and know our tastes and rhythms. This is the case with the concierge, who year after year guesses which events we would like to participate in, without ever getting it wrong; or the restaurant where the maître and the sommelier always suggest the perfect pairing for our evening; or the bar where Andrea and his team bring us the right drink at the right moment, those same competent and trustworthy people that we meet with the same joy and affection at the Gstaad and Sankt Moritz in the winter.

L’atmosfera, l’intesa con lo staff, la sua preparazione e disponibilità, il piacere della tavola e la tranquillità sono qualità impagabili. E il Pitrizza è la perfetta sintesi di tutto questo. Se poi aggiungi il mare della Costa Smeralda, il suo sole e queste bellissime ville distribuite su una verdeggiante collina, allora fai come me e dopo una vita in viaggio diventi inaspettatamente un habitué. Sono stato un po’ ovunque, dall’Australia all’America Latina, passando per l’Estremo Oriente, ma in pochi casi sono tornato più volte nello stesso albergo, almeno fino a quando non sono approdato al Pitrizza. Questo hotel sembra fatto su misura per me e ormai sono sei anni che non riesco a fare a meno di passare qui le mie vacanze estive. Vengo appena comincia la stagione e ci soggiorno dalle quattro alle sei settimane, fino ad agosto, a volte settembre. Forse il periodo che preferisco è giugno, quando percorrendo i sentieri che risalgono dalla spiaggia senti ancora più distintamente quel profumo intenso di macchia mediterranea che ti accompagna fino alle ville. Da lì domini l’intera baia, arrivando a toccare con lo sguardo la Corsica, che spunta al di là delle isole più vicine.

L’arrivo è stato entusiasmante. Ma come si dice?

The atmosphere, the staff’s understanding, along with their expertise and availability, the pleasure of dining and tranquillity are priceless qualities. And the Pitrizza is the perfect synthesis of all this. If you add the sea of the Costa Smeralda, its sun and the beautiful villas dotting the lush hill, then be like me who, after a life spent traveling, unexpectedly found a habitué. I’ve been everywhere, from Australia to Latin America and to the Far East, but very rarely have I returned to the same hotel more than once, at least not until I came to the Pitrizza. This hotel seems to be tailor-made for me, and it’s now been six years since I started spending my summer holidays here. I come as soon as the season starts and I stay for about four to six weeks, until August, sometimes September. I think I like June the most, when I can walk the paths coming up from the beach, taking in that distinct and intense aroma of the Mediterranean scrub that hangs in the air all the way to the villas. From up there, you can look over the entire bay, as far as Corsica, the closest of the nearby islands.

My arrival was exciting. But what is it that they say?

In realtà in questo caso io e la mia compagna abbiamo percepito immediatamente la particolare attenzione che viene riservata all’ospite, è stato il tempo però a darcene riprova. Non servono parole, basta uno sguardo per far capire di cosa ho bisogno. Anno dopo anno si ricordano esattamente le mie preferenze. Sanno come mi piace trovare la villa al mio arrivo in ogni dettaglio, dal tipo di cuscino che uso alla frutta che preferisco e conoscono alla perfezione i miei gusti e le mie abitudini a tavola. Sono queste piccole grandi cose che danno ragione al direttore quando a inizio stagione mi saluta dicendomi “bentornato a casa sua”.

Della Sardegna non ero nuovo, la frequento da più di quarant’anni, ma non c’è altro luogo dove la puoi vivere con questa intimità. L’hotel è strutturato in modo tale da ospitare un numero limitato di clienti e in spiaggia anche in pieno agosto non sei in compagnia di più di quindici o venti persone. La cucina è eccellente, qualità rara in un albergo.

L’anno scorso per la prima volta mi ha raggiunto mia figlia con i bambini e si è divertita provando tutti gli sport acquatici per cui l’hotel è attrezzato. I miei nipotini - e la loro mamma che così si è potuta concedere anche un po’ di riposo - hanno adorato il Toy Club.

Insomma, puoi dimenticare la macchina e gli spostamenti: qui hai tutto quello che puoi desiderare.

E so per certo che questi sei anni sono stati solo i primi di una lunga serie.

Honestly, in this case, my partner and I immediately noticed the particular attention given to the guests, but then it was time to make a prove.

There’s no need for words; all it takes is a look and they understand what I need. Year after year, they always remember what I like. They know how I like to find the villa when I arrive, down to the smallest details, from the type of pillow I use to the fruit that I like, and they perfectly know my tastes and habits at the dinner table. It’s these small, important things that prove the manager right when, at the beginning of the season, he greets me with a “Welcome home”.

I wasn’t new to Sardinia; I’ve been coming here for more than forty years, but there’s no other place where you can experience this level of familiarity.

The hotel is structured in such a way that it hosts a limited number of clients, and so the beach, even in August, doesn’t tend to have more than fifteen or twenty people on it. The food is also excellent, a rare quality in hotels.

Last year, my daughter came to visit with her children for the first time and she had a lot of fun trying all the water sports that the hotel is equipped for.

My grandchildren really enjoyed the Toy Club – and so did their mom, who was able to relax for a bit.

You can forget the car and moving around: this place has everything you’d want. And I know for certain that these six years have only been the first of many more to come.

Trascorro al Romazzino le vacanze estive con la famiglia dal 1997. Dieci giorni di relax e di pace assoluta.

Non abbiamo mai perso un anno. Ci andiamo tra giugno e luglio, un periodo speciale per noi perché festeggiamo il compleanno di mia moglie e di una delle nostre due figlie. Ed è sempre stato bellissimo.

Qui si ha la combinazione di un luogo straordinario e di un servizio che ci ha sempre fatto sentire a casa nostra.

Il paesaggio è incomparabile. Ma l’elemento che rende davvero unico il Romazzino è la qualità dell’accoglienza. Non abbiamo mai trovato un equivalente in nessun altro luogo. Al di là della bellezza sconcertante di questo angolo di Sardegna, è proprio l’essere accolti come se fossimo di casa il motivo per cui siamo sempre tornati. Due esempi che mi vengono in mente a questo proposito. Noi arriviamo ogni anno, la mattina presto, col primo volo per Olbia da Milano.

Si disfano i bagagli velocemente, e si va subito in spiaggia dove - con un piacere per me impagabile trovo i miei giornali ad aspettarmi. Questo perché i portieri sanno da un anno all’altro che cosa leggo.

I’ve spent my summer holidays with the family at the Romazzino since 1997. Ten days of relax and total peace. We haven’t skipped a year. We go between June and July, a special period for us because that’s when we celebrate my wife’s and one of our daughters’ birthdays. And it’s always been incredible.

It’s a magnificent and welcoming place for us because it’s the combination of an extraordinary place and a service that has always helped us feel at home.

The landscape is unparalleled. This is a paradise where you can completely detach from the outside world and feel reinvigorated from every point of view. But what makes the Romazzino truly unique is the quality of its hospitality. We’ve never found anything like it in any other place. Beyond the devastating beauty of this part of Sardinia, it’s being welcomed as if we were at home that has always encouraged us to come back. Two examples of this come to mind. Every year, we arrive early in the morning with the first flight for Olbia from Milan.

Unpacked quickly, we go straight to the beach, where I find my newspapers waiting for me, which is a joy I find truly priceless. This is because the concierge remember what I read, even a year later.

E’ un servizio che sa riconoscere anche finemente nel dettaglio e con discrezione le nostre preferenze e abitudini, sono anni che non comunichiamo più il tipo di acqua che preferiamo bere.

Questo è anche un albergo perfetto per andarci con la famiglia, c’è un’organizzazione eccezionale per la gestione dei bambini piccoli. Quando le nostre due figlie erano piccoline, questa per loro era una vera vacanza: stavano tutto il giorno nel club dei bambini dove erano accudite con ogni attenzione e dove facevano mille giochi e attività adatte alla loro età. Allo stesso tempo c’è un grande rispetto per le esigenze e le necessità degli adulti. Questo consente di fare una vera vacanza a tutto il nucleo familiare. E poi ci sono momenti indimenticabili che si ripetono ogni anno scandendo amabilmente le nostre vacanze. L’aperitivo al tramonto, quando ci sediamo sulla terrazza interna del Romazzino, in balia di colori affascinanti, e lo sguardo si perde sull’isola di Mortorio che si tinge di rosso, nessun rumore, pace assoluta. Le feste di compleanno. In vent’anni abbiamo festeggiato qui 40 compleanni, venti di mia moglie e venti di mia figlia, con bellissimi party in albergo. E poi la cucina. Le ‘Penne al Romazzino’ servite flambé al tavolo con una coreografia spettacolare ed eccitante e… le bollicine fresche e spumeggianti di champagne che qualche volta ci concediamo mia moglie ed io nel corso della vacanza. Sono questi i ricordi e le sensazioni che riempiono i nostri sogni per tutto l’inverno.

The service is able to recognize, even down to the smallest details and with discretion, our preferences and habits. It’s been years since we’ve told the kind of water we like to drink. This is also the perfect hotel for spending time with the family. The staff demonstrate exceptional organization in managing young children. When our two daughters were little, this was a real vacation for them: they spent all day at the kid’s club, where they were carefully looked after and where they played a thousand games and activities suited to their age.

At the same time, there’s immense respect for the needs and necessities of the adults. This allows for a true vacation for the entire family. And then there are those unforgettable moments that are pleasantly repeated throughout the vacation year after year.

The aperitivo at sundown, when we sit out on the Romazzino’s indoor terrace, absorbed in the fascinating colours, and our gaze stretches to the island of Mortorio as it takes on a reddish hue, no noise, absolute peace. The birthday parties: In twenty years, we’ve celebrated 40 birthdays, twenty for my wife and twenty for my daughter, with wonderful parties in the hotel. Then there’s the cuisine. The Penne al Romazzino, served flambé at the table with a spectacular and exciting choreography, and the cold, frothing champagne that my wife and I sometimes allow ourselves during the vacation. These are the memories and feelings that fill our dreams all winter long.

La prima volta è stata un’escursione: ogni anno con mio marito, mia sorella e il marito e una coppia di amici partivamo per una crociera in tarda primavera. Destinazione: Caraibi e Mediterraneo.

Diciassette anni fa siamo arrivati a Porto Cervo, il tempo di un aperitivo in Piazzetta al tramonto e ci siamo innamorati: un “coup de foudre” moltiplicato per sei, per tutta la nostra piccola brigata di viaggiatori. Da allora la nostra meta è diventata la Costa Smeralda, ogni estate dal 2001. Molte cose sono cambiate in questi anni ma per me e mia sorella il nostro mese all’Hotel Cervo è diventato un appuntamento a cui non possiamo mancare. E le nostre famiglie ci seguono, per passare un po’ di tempo con le nonne: l’anno scorso eravamo 14, di ogni età! Una bellissima atmosfera. Cosa mi piace di questi luoghi? Difficile da dire: per me ormai è casa, un posto dove mi sento al sicuro, coccolata e protetta come quando ho i miei cari attorno, anche se viaggio da sola. Voglio raccontare una piccola disavventura, solo per far capire il senso intimo delle mie parole: due anni fa sono caduta in Piazzetta. Risultato: un polso rotto! Ma non ho un brutto ricordo dell’episodio, perché prima di

The first time was an excursion: every year with my husband, my sister and her husband and a couple of friends, we would go on a cruise in the late spring. The Caribbean and the Mediterranean. We came to Porto Cervo 17 years ago, and all it took was an aperitivo in the Piazzetta and we’d fallen in love: a coup de foudre for our little group of travellers. Since then, our destination has become the Costa Smeralda, a fixed period on our calendar since 2001. Many things have changed over the years, but for me and my sister, our month at the Hotel Cervo has become something we would never skip. And our families follow us so they can spend a bit of time with their grandmothers: last summer we were a party of 14, ranging all ages! It was a beautiful atmosphere. What do I like about these places? It’s difficult to say. This has become my home now, a place where I feel safe, cared for and protected like when I have those I’m most close to around me, even if I travel by myself. I want to mention a little misadventure, just to underline the heartfelt sense of what I’m saying: two years ago I fell in the Piazzetta and broke my wrist.

rendermi conto di quanto stava accadendo, Christian della portineria era lì con me, con la stessa confidenza di un fratello o di un caro amico e in pochissimo tempo abbiamo risolto. Si sa, non sono più una ragazzina e queste sensazioni per me sono importanti, soprattutto quando non mi trovo a Toronto! La mia passione è l’arte: a casa dipingo e quando sono in italia – dopo la Sardegna trascorriamo sempre qualche mese a Venezia a casa di mia sorella – mi godo i grandi capolavori di ogni tempo e le mostre che mancano nel mio paese di adozione. Amo da sempre la musica e la cosa che rende la Costa Smeralda un luogo veramente speciale per me e la mia famiglia sono le serate al piano bar, con Max Ruffino che intona canzoni italiane, con il mare sullo sfondo. Quando siamo al gran completo occupiamo letteralmente tutto il piano bar. Un paio di volte ho anche cantato: adoro “Romagna mia” e le canzoni napoletane. Max mi ha fatto promettere che quest’anno canterò di nuovo con lui!

La mia camera è sempre la stessa: una grande suite affacciata sulla Piazzetta da cui sento le note del piano. A cena sempre e solo scampi alla griglia, il mio piatto preferito, mentre durante il giorno trascorro le ore alla caletta del Romazzino. Quando mi raggiungono figli e nipoti organizziamo qualche uscita in barca per un bagno al largo e un pranzo sulla riva con pesce freschissimo. Stessa spiaggia, stesso mare? Direi di no: è il calore dello staff a rendere tutto nuovo e unico ogni anno.

Art is my passion: I paint when I’m at home and while I’m in Italy – after Sardinia we always spend a few months in Venice at my sister’s house – I enjoy the great masterpieces of every era and the exhibitions that you just don’t see in my adopted country. I’ve always loved music and the thing that makes the Costa Smeralda such a special place for me and my family are the evenings at the piano bar with Max Ruffino singing Italian songs, the sea in the background.

When there are many of us, we take up literally the entire piano bar. I’ve also sung a few times: I love Romagna mia and Neapolitan songs.

This year Max made me promise to sing with him again!

My room is always the same: a large suite overlooking the Piazzetta, where I can hear the piano notes.

At dinner, it’s always grilled scampi, my favourite dish, while during the day I spend the hours at the Romazzino’s bay. When my children and grandchildren arrive, we organize a few outings on the boat for a swim off the coast and lunch on the shore with fresh fish. The same beach, the same sea? I wouldn’t say so: it’s the warmth of the staff that makes everything new and unique each year.

La terra generosa e il mare incontaminato di quest’isola baciata dal sole, da secoli consente ai contadini, pastori e pescatori sardi di portare in tavola materie prime eccezionali. Oggi la riscoperta di attività di piccole dimensioni, consone allo stile produttivo di questa regione e distanti anni luce dall’industria agroalimentare intensiva, rende merito alle eccellenze locali. Carciofo Spinoso Sardo Di tutte le varietà che crescono in Italia quello spinoso sardo è una delle migliori perché nasconde un cuore tenerissimo e dolce, un sapore finissimo e fiero, che si presta perfettamente anche alle preparazioni più leggere e “a crudo”. Sardinian Spiny Artichoke Of all the varieties of artichoke that grow in Italy, the spiny Sardinian is one of the best because it hides a sweet and tender heart and a strong yet subtle flavour, which lends itself perfectly even to light, a crudo preparation. La pesca delle aragoste viene effettuata o con il metodo del tramaglio (una rete flottante costituita da tre parti, una rete mediana a maglie piccole compresa fra altre due reti a maglia più larga) o con quello della nassa (una rete metallica o di plastica sulla cui estremità si trova una sorta di “imbuto”). Carne bianca, compatta e dal gusto delicatissimo, in particolare quella del crostaceo pesca-

to nelle acque di Bosa, non ha tuttora rivali per qualità.

Astice Il solo crostaceo capace di competere con la sontuosa aragosta sarda è l’astice, non di rado confuso con l’aragosta (invece scientificamente sono di famiglie diverse e si nota subito la differenza per via delle chele: l’astice le ha, l’aragosta no). Una materia prima di assoluta eccellenza pescata nelle acque incontaminate a nord dell’isola. E’ molto apprezzato per le sue carni sode bianco-rosate ricche di minerali e vitamine, e per il suo sapore delicato. Un prodotto diventato prelibatezza per palati fini e portafogli forti, ma fino agli anni ‘50 alimento base sulla tavola di tante famiglie, non solo di pescatori, e cibo alla portata di tutti. Il sogno (quasi irrealizzabile) è l’astice blu, il preferito dei gourmet soprattutto per il rarissimo colore bluastro della sua corazza.

Vongole veraci Quelle della Sardegna sono ricchissime di sali minerali. La pesca viene effettuata con un rastrello a mano o da barca. Rispetto alle vongole filippine, ormai dilaganti nel Mediterraneo, hanno colori meno vivaci e più uniformi, ma la prova schiacciante sono i due piccoli sifoni per l’ingresso e l’uscita dell’acqua, che si muovono in modo totalmente indipendente. Un’oasi dove le vongole veraci prosperano senza doversi preoccupare delle temute rivali è la laguna di Arborea, nei pressi di Oristano: 180 ettari di stagni costieri, ricavati tra lingue di sabbia che dividono il mare dalla terraferma.

The white meat is compact and extremely delicate in taste, especially if the lobster was caught in the waters off Bosa, and still has no rivals for quality.

European Lobster The only crustacean able to compete with the sumptuous Sardinian spiny lobster is the astice, not infrequently confused with the other. Scientifically, they belong to different families and are immediately distinguishable: the astice has claws, the aragosta does not. A truly exquisite food, it is caught in the island’s uncontaminated northern waters and is greatly prized for its hard white-pink meat, rich in mineral salts, vitamins and subtle flavours. It is now a delicacy for those with refined tastes and deep pockets, but until the 1950s it was a food within everybody’s means and on many people’s tables, not just those of fishermen. The gourmet’s dream, almost impossible, is the blue lobster, on account of the rare colour of its carapace.

Clams Sardinian clams are very rich in mineral salts. They are fished with a rake, either by hand or attached to a boat. Manila clams, now rampant in the Mediterranean, have a more uniform, less vivacious colour, but the distinguishing feature is the two small siphons, which move totally independently, for the intake and expulsion of water. An oasis where the clams can prosper without fear of their rivals is Arborea lagoon, near Oristano: 180 hectares of coastal pools, formed between the sandbanks that divide the sea from dry land.

Ci sono giornate che sai come cominceranno ma non puoi immaginare come finiranno. Capita spesso, direte, ma quando la serata inaspettatamente si trasforma in un ricordo indimenticabile che fa brillare gli occhi, allora è una certezza: quella giornata è un dono prezioso. È stato così per Virginia McNamee che al Cala di Volpe ha trovato il luogo perfetto per la tradizionale cena che una volta all’anno riunisce tutta la sua famiglia sotto lo stesso tetto, anzi, in questo caso è più corretto dire, sotto lo stesso cielo stellato. Sì, perché per la loro cena hanno scelto una location davvero unica: l’orto dell’hotel, ovvero il regno del signor Giovanni, che ne cura ogni angolo quasi fosse una signorile reggia en plein air, con rami carichi di frutta fresca al posto dei lampadari di cristallo e ordinati grappoli di pomodori di un intenso rosso scarlatto al posto di eleganti mobili. Non mancano le galline con le loro deliziose uova fresche, le caprette, tra cui Peppy, pupilla di Giovanni, tutti gli aromi e le altre verdure della ricca cultura gastronomica sarda, più un piccolo vigneto tra i cui filari spunta un incantevole bar dove allestire inedite degustazioni delle eccellenze vinicole della Sardegna, provenienti dalla ricercata carta del ristorante Cala di Volpe.

This is how it was for Virginia McNamee, who saw the Cala di Volpe as the perfect place for the traditional dinner that once a year sees her whole family under the same roof, or in this case, under the same starry sky.

Yes, because for their dinner, they chose a truly unique location: the hotel’s vegetable garden, the realm of signor Giovanni, who takes care of every corner as if it were an aristocratic palace en plein air, with branches loaded with fresh fruit instead of crystal chandeliers and ordered bunches of tomatoes, bestowed with an intense scarlet red colour, rather than elegant furniture. There are chickens, with their delicious fresh eggs, baby goats, including Peppy, Giovanni’s pet, all the aromas and vegetables of Sardinia’s rich cuisine and a small vineyard, with a charming bar nestled amongst its rows, where guests can experience original tastings of Sardinia’s best wines, coming from the wine list of the Cala di Volpe’s restaurant.

Sarà per il loro amore per la natura, sarà per la loro fattoria nella zona di Flinders, nel sud dell’Australia, dove si dedicano all’agricoltura e all’allevamento, ma questo per la famiglia McNamee era il contesto dove sentirsi veramente a casa. È bastato chiedere al personale dell’hotel e la magia ha avuto inizio. Ecco dunque che il manto erboso si è trasformato in un fresco pavimento e sotto il verde baldacchino è apparsa una tavola imbandita di tutto punto, con piante rampicanti come cornice e una mise en place davvero originale fatta di inebrianti composizioni non solo floreali ma anche vegetali. Uno spettacolo per gli occhi e per l’olfatto. Prima di gustare gli ottimi piatti orchestrati ovviamente dall’Executive Chef Maurizio Locatelli “è stato bello rilassarsi e chiacchie-

Perhaps it was for their love of nature, or for their farm in Flinders, in the south of Australia, where they’re dedicated to agriculture and breeding livestock, but this is the setting where the McNamee family felt truly at home.

All it took was asking the staff at the hotel and the magic had begun. The blanket of grass transformed into a fresh floor and a table prepared for a feast was set up under the green canopy, with vines framing the scene and a truly original mise en place made of inebriating compositions not only floral but vegetal as well.

Tutto è stato pensato con amore e tocchi personali, vini squisiti e ottimi piatti: io ho adorato l’aragosta al burro e il maialino sardo, mentre il gelato con i limoni dell’orto è entrato letteralmente nel cuore di mio padre.” “Le parole non possono descrivere tutto questo”, conclude Virginia.

A distanza di un anno, a ricordare ai McNamee la splendida serata, c’è una riproduzione di quasi due metri di Peppy, l’esuberante capretta che quella sera li accolse insieme al signor Giovanni. “La loro Bepe”, come la chiamano affettuosamente, una statua in ferro che adesso fa compagnia agli animali della loro grande tenuta in Australia e dà il benvenuto ai suoi ospiti.

Chef Maurizio Locatelli, “it was wonderful to relax and talk as we walked, a glass in hand, along the garden paths illuminated by candles and evocative lanterns,” Natalie, Virginia’s daughter, tells us. “It was one of the most memorable evenings that we’ve ever spent as a family, thanks especially to the kindness of the staff, the beauty of the set-up and the fairy-tale atmosphere.

Everything was thought of with love and personal touches, exquisite wines and excellent dishes: I loved the lobster in butter and the Sardinian piglet, while the gelato made from the garden’s lemons has literally found a place for itself in my father’s heart.” “Words can’t describe all this,” Virginia finishes.

A year later, reminding the McNamee of the splendid evening, there’s a reproduction of Peppy, almost two metres high, the exuberant baby goat that welcomed the family together with Giovanni that evening. “Their Bepe,” as they affectionately call her: an iron statue that keeps their animals company on their large estate in Australia and welcomes their guests.

Quattropassi al Pescatore, nel cuore di Porto Cervo, racconta la cucina di Nerano sull’Isola.

Come è avvenuto l’incontro con la cucina?

L’amore per la cucina lo devo a mia mamma Flora, capace di declinare la grande arte dei monzù cucinando a casa delle famiglie nobili che villeggiavano nella Penisola Sorrentina. Dopo la scuola alberghiera ho iniziato a lavorare sulle navi da crociera: partivamo da Miami e toccavamo San Lucas, Martinica, Guadalupe. Il mio sogno nel cassetto era però aprire un ristorante mio. Un sogno che si avvera nel 1983, quando conosco mia moglie Rita: per realizzare i sogni c’è bisogno di qualcuno che aiuti a mettere in ordine le idee.

Perché ha scelto la Sardegna?

La Sardegna è il coronamento di un altro sogno. Arrivato a Porto Cervo, ho incontrato grandi professionisti e quando incontri persone così entri in sintonia immediata.

In Sardegna che tipo di cucina propone?

Abbiamo lavorato per rinnovare gradualmente l’ottima carta del Pescatore, aggiungendo i nostri piatti cult. Con gli chef del Pescatore abbiamo deciso di far venire da Nerano i giovani della cucina, per condividere i signature dishes: è iniziato così il nostro percorso insieme.

Il piatto che racconta la sua cucina in Costa Smeralda?

La mia linguina con zucchine, non posso farne a meno!

Ma ci sono anche il pacchero con lo scorfano, un raviolino col pomodoro fresco e i miei grandi piatti di crudo.

Raccontiamo poi il territorio con le proposte già presenti in menu. Naturalmente usiamo il pecorino sardo e il pescato dell’isola: ho un amico sorrentino che lavora a due ore da Porto Cervo e questo ci aiuta a fare la differenza.

Where did your love of cooking come from?

I owe my love of cooking to my mother Flora, who’s skilled at evoking the great art of the monzù preparation in the homes of noble families that vacationed on the Sorrento Peninsula. After hospitality school, I began working on cruise ships. My dream was to open my own restaurant though, which I did in 1983 when I met my wife Rita: to achieve your dreams, you need someone who can help you put your ideas in order.

Why did you choose Sardinia?

Sardinia is another dream of mine. When I came to Porto Cervo, I met major professionals, and when you meet people like that, an automatic harmony kicks.

In Sardinia, what kind of cuisine do you offer?

The project began with a small revision of what was already on the menu: we’re working on gradually revamping it, without introducing sudden changes.

With the chefs at the Pescatore, we decided to bring in the young cooks from Nerano to share our signature dishes: this is how our journey together began.

The dish that best represents your menu in the Costa Smeralda?

My zucchini linguine, I can’t resist it! But there’s also paccheri with scorpion fish, ravioli with fresh tomatoes and my excellent raw dishes. We reflect the territory with the items already available on the menu. We use pecorino sardo and seafood caught right here on the island: I have a friend who works two hours from Porto Cervo and this makes a difference.

Il suo primo ricordo di cucina e il piatto di cui non può fare a meno?

La zuppa miso. Mia madre la preparava rigorosamente tutti i giorni ed è il primo piatto che ho imparato a cucinare.

Come si può definire il Ristorante Matsuhisa e il suo DNA, e in che modo Matsuhisa si differenzia da Nobu?

Nobu è il mio nome e Matsuhisa il mio cognome. Sono entrambi miei figli. I ristoranti Matsuhisa sono generalmente più piccoli e si trovano in località stagionali o in città più piccole come Monaco e Atene.

Ciò spiega la decisione di aprire un pop-up nel leggendario Hotel Cala di Volpe, dove riscontriamo similitudini con altri locali di successo in Europa, come il Matsuhisa Mykonos o il Matsuhisa al Palace St Moritz.

Quali sono i legami che uniscono le due “istituzioni” Cala di Volpe e Matsuhisa?

La stessa etica di ospitalità: lusso discreto, eccellenza nel cibo e nel servizio, energia, calore e una visione a lungo termine.

Tutti i suoi ristoranti nel mondo hanno un tema senza tempo che li unisce e va oltre le mode e le tendenze del momento.

E’ eleganza e l’eccellenza nei piaceri del palato e dello spirito che li hanno resi un modello a cui ispirarsi.

Quali sorprese ci riserverà l’apertura del Matsuhisa pop-up restaurant al Cala di Volpe?

Porteremo i nostri piatti più conosciuti e l’energia e il calore di tutti i nostri ristoranti, sia Nobu che Matsuhisa. Cercheremo anche di usare il più possibile ingredienti locali e stagionali come pesce, pomodori, verdura e frutta.

Your very first cooking memory and the one dish that you can’t do without?

Miso soup. My mother made Miso soup every day and this is the dish that I first learned to cook.

Matsuhisa Restaurant and its DNA, how this can be defined. In what ways does Matsuhisa restaurant differ from Nobu restaurant?

Nobu is my first name and Matsuhisa my surname. They are both my children. Menus and concept are similar. Matsuhisa restaurants tend though, to be smaller and are located mostly in seasonal destinations and smaller cities as Munich and Athens . That explains the decision to do a popup in legendary Cala di Volpe, where we see similarities with other very successful European ventures as Matsuhisa Mykonos or Matsuhisa at the Palace St Moritz.

What are the ties that bind these two “institutions”, Cala di Volpe and Matsuhisa?

Both brands share the same ethics on hospitality. They are about discreet luxury, excellence in food and service, energy, warmth and are seeking the long term.

In all of your restaurants throughout the world, there is a timeless theme that connects them, that disregards the fashions and trends of the moment.

It’s that sophistication and excellence in pleasures of the palate and the spirit that has made them an inspirational example.

What surprises are in store with the opening of the Matsuhisa pop-up restaurant at the Cala di Volpe?

At Cala di Volpe we are bringing our signature dishes and the energy and warmth that you can find in all our restaurants, Nobu or Matsuhisa. We will also try to work as much as possible with local seasonal ingredients when we can, as local fish, tomatoes, vegetables, fruits.

Nuna, in dialetto Inca “anima”, racconta in modo completo il Perù, non tralasciando nessuna delle macro aree in cui è suddiviso: mare, costa, sierra e selva. Un ristorante e bar che rimane fedele al patrimonio peruviano nella sua offerta di aperitivi e cena contemporanea, che si distingue per i suoi colori vivaci, gli aromi seducenti e l’amabile ospitalità Quali sono i piatti più identificativi del nuovo ristorante?

Il piatto bandiera è la cevice, ma non è l’unico: da Nuna troverete molto altro. Sapori inediti, ingredienti ricercati che daranno vita a meravigliose ricette di pesce, ma anche piatti che nascono per la condivisione, piccoli assaggi che accompagnano buonissimi cocktail. E non ultimi, i rinomati arrosti: saporiti e salutari, assicurano un gusto raffinato e pieno senza grassi Perché la cucina peruviana sta vivendo un momento di grande successo?

Perché è sana, equilibrata, povera di grassi e utilizza tanti alimenti a basso indice glicemico e ricchi di calcio.

Oltre a essere buonissima e bella da vedere: ogni preparazione è un fantastico arcobaleno di colori e sapori.

Saranno utilizzati anche ingredienti tipici dell’Isola?

Certo, i fantastici aromi sardi! I profumi che si respirano qui sono unici…

Che atmosfera accoglie gli ospiti di Nuna?

Rilassata, colorata, piena di musica e relax. Abbiamo delle proposte di cibo abbinato ai cocktail ma anche una carta di vini importante e interessante. Ci si potrà fermare da Nuna per un aperitivo o per una cena con una festosa compagnia di amici, per gustare i nostri attraenti e colorati assaggi. Un luogo dove si va per scoprire nuovi sapori e si rimane per l’atmosfera.

What does Nuna mean and what will the concept be of the new restaurant in the piazzetta in Porto Cervo?

Nuna, meaning “soul” in the Incan dialect, speaks of Perù in its entirety, never neglecting the macro areas that it’s divided into: sea, coast, sierra and forest. It’s a restaurant and bar that remains loyal to Peruvian heritage in its choices of aperitivi and contemporary dinners, which sets itself apart for its lively colours, seductive aromas and friendly hospitality.

What are the most distinguishing dishes of the new restaurant?

The emblematic dish is the cevice, but that’s not the only one: at Nuna, you’ll find much more. Original flavours, selected ingredients that create incredible fish recipes and dishes that are meant to be shared, small bites to accompany delicious cocktails. And last but not least, the renowned roasts: flavourful and healthy, they promise a refined and full flavour, fat free.

Why is Peruvian cuisine having such success right now?

Because it’s healthy, balanced, low in fat and uses many foods that have a low glycemic index and are rich in calcium. In addition to being incredibly good and beautiful to look at, every preparation is a fantastic rainbow of colours and flavours.

Will the island’s typical ingredients be used?

Of course, the fantastic Sardinian aromas! The fragrances that infuse the air here are unique…

What kind of atmosphere welcomes guests at Nuna?

Relaxed, colourful, full of music and tranquillity. We have dishes paired with cocktails, as well as an important and interesting wine menu. Guests can stop by Nuna for an aperitivo or for dinner with a festive group of friends to taste our attractive and colourful bites. This is a place where guests go to discover new flavours and stay for the atmosphere.

Arkady Novikov, ristoratore di fama internazionale e vero fan della Sardegna, torna in Costa Smeralda per il terzo anno consecutivo con il suo marchio Novikov, questa volta nella storica Piazzetta di Porto Cervo. I suoi piatti asiatici impreziosiscono il menu, valorizzato anche dall’utilizzo degli ingredienti sardi.

Come sarà l’esperienza da Novikov a Porto Cervo?

Il cibo sarà sempre delizioso, esattamente come a Mosca, Londra, Dubai e Miami. La posizione è fantastica. Volevamo mantenere lo spirito di Novikov Londra, declinato in un’atmosfera favolosa legata al mare. All’interno troviamo un grande bancone in marmo per il sushi, mentre all’esterno una terrazza estiva arredata con mobili di raffinata fattura e naturalmente la VIP lounge.

Cosa l’ha fatta innamorare della Sardegna?

Ho visitato la Sardegna, per la prima volta, circa vent’anni fa e da allora vengo qui ogni anno e adoro tutto: il mare, la costa, le rocce, la vegetazione, le persone, il cibo, l’architettura. La sua pace e la tranquillità sono uniche. Questo è il mio paese d’adozione, il posto giusto per me.

Come concilia gli ingredienti locali con lo stile asiatico?

Con la sapienza, l’amore e l’aiuto di chi conosce bene la cultura enogastronomica locale. Ciò che conta di più è l’uso di materia prima di altissima qualità abbinata agli ingredienti che esaltano il sapore secondo il concetto di Fusion asiatico.

Quali ingredienti sardi cerca di portare nel mondo?

Quando vengo in Sardegna non dimentico mai i sapori che mi rimangono in testa, come un’orata, una spigola, un’aragosta, i pomodori e i cetrioli locali. Da non dimenticare i vini sardi, irrinunciabili elementi che completano i menu dei miei ristoranti.

Arkady Novikov, an internationally acclaimed restaurateur and a true fan of Sardinia, for the third year in a row returns to Costa Smeralda with his brand Novikov, this year in the storical Porto Cervo’s Piazzetta. His Asian dishes grace the menu, with the added value of Sardinian ingredients.

What will be the experience at Novikov in Porto Cervo?

The food is always great, like we do in Moscow, London, Dubai and Miami. The location is gorgeous. We wanted to maintain the spirit of Novikov London and fill it with an atmosphere that’s refined and tied to the sea. Inside, there is a huge marble sushi counter, while outside the summer terrace with very high-end furniture (same of the yachts) and of course the VIP lounge.

How did you fall in love with Sardinia?

I came to Sardinia for the first time about twenty years ago, and since then, I’ve come here every year. I love everything about it: the sea, coast, rocks, plants, people, food, architecture and its distinctive peace and quiet.

This is the country of my dreams, the ideal place for me.

How do you reconcile local ingredients with Asian style?

With the expertise, passion and collaboration of those who have a deep knowledge of the local food and wine culture. What counts most is the use of basic ingredients of the highest quality and enhancing flavors according to the Asian Fusion concept.

Which Sardinian ingredients do you bring to the world?

When I come to Sardinia I never forget the things that make a lasting impression on me, like Gilthead bream, sea bass, lobster, local tomatoes and cucumbers. On top of that are Sardinian wines which have become the basis of the menus in my restaurants.

Sardinia aims to showcase the charm of Costa Smeralda and it does so thanks to the kitchen brigades who bounce around to the most exclusive spots in the world, spreading their knowledge and communicating the authenticity of Sardinia, a place steeped in culture and values that stand out for their excellence in the international arena.

Just before departing for Istanbul, after five weeks of collaboration at Albany Club Bahamas, and already knee-deep in preparations for the days in Baku in Azerbaijan, the storytelling side of Taste of Sardinia is a true must. “When we arrive at one of our destinations, whether Palm Beach or London, Miami or Nassau, we commit to showcasing our traditions and our world through food,” Lutzoni explains, “also because we often come across guests who have not been to Sardinia yet. So we start telling them about it, sharing the stories behind each dish and explaining the choices that we make when we suggest wines.”

During the exclusive Taste of Sardinia evenings, the room is adorned with myrtle, rosemary and lemon: this helps guests to immerse themselves completely in the Island’s atmosphere, including its scents.

Mario Lutzoni e Maurizio Locatelli sono gli ambasciatori del Cala di Volpe nei diversi continenti. “Ogni volta che preparo un piatto o lo creo, quello a cui miro è saper presentare l’essenziale, far sì che in bocca si rifletta perfettamente il piatto che il commensale ha davanti racconta l’Executive Chef del Cala di Volpe-. L’autenticità è fondamentale e la scelta delle materie prime lo è altrettanto. Inebriare con la delicatezza, la semplicità: è questo il risultato che voglio ottenere.” Una sfida che ogni volta riesce a vincere, presentando sulla tavola i sapori veri dell’orto e del mare, anche quando le materie prime da impiegare possono apparire non adeguate: “quando preparo il raviolo ricotta, limone e asparagi con bottarga, che ho creato per dare la consistenza e il profumo della Sardegna a chi non l’ha mai vista, non sempre ho a disposizione tutti gli ingredienti. Eppure riesco ogni volta a riprodurre il sapore intenso e fresco del Mediterraneo, grazie a un uso attento delle materie prime che trovo in giro per il mondo.” Anche se quando si tratta di carré d’agnello al Vermentino, assicura lo chef, “Vermentino dev’essere.” Così a Baku in occasione del Gran Premio, a Riyadh come già nella statunitense Everglades, il profumo e il calore generoso della Sardegna sono indimenticabili.

“Authenticity is fundamental and so is the selection of raw materials. To inebriate diners with delicacy and simplicity: this is what I look for.” It’s a challenge that time and time again he manages to conquer, bringing the true flavors of surf and turf to the table, even when the raw ingredients to be used can seem insufficient: “When I prepare ravioli with ricotta, lemon, asparagus and bottarga, which I created to show the texture and scent of Sardinia to those who’ve never experienced it, I don’t always have all of the ingredients available. And yet I manage each time to reproduce the intense and fresh taste of the Mediterranean, thanks to a diligent use of raw materials that I find around the world.”

Although when it comes time for rack of lamb with Vermentino, the chef assures us, “You have to use Vermentino.”

And so in Baku, for the occasion of the Gran Premio, and in Riyadh, just as in the Everglades in the United States, the extravagant scents and warmth of Sardinia are unforgettable.

È un appuntamento da scrivere sul libro d’oro degli anniversari, quello del 2018, perché segna la decima edizione del Porto Cervo Wine & Food, nata nell’aprile 2009 come Porto Cervo Wine Festival il cui contraltare (nel settembre) fu il Porto Cervo Food Festival. Due date strategiche, che aprivano e chiudevano la stagione più vivace della Costa Smeralda, offrendo un panorama ampio - di confronto e discussione - sull’enologia e la gastronomia, immergendosi nella stretta relazione che esiste tra i grandi vini e l’alta cucina. Da sempre il moderatore dei confronti è Bruno Gambacorta elegante intenditore di enogastronomia. Dal 2016 i due eventi sono diventati il la con cui si dà l’avvio alla stagione, senza perdere di vista la valorizzazione dei prodotti del territorio sardo e il clou dell’enologia nazionale e internazionale, cui si è associata la presentazione di aziende dei settori caseario, oleario, ittico e adesso anche la birra.

Il contatto con la natura, mettersi alla prova, assaporare il silenzio e lo spazio, poterlo fare ad ogni età, anche se si è scoperto lo sport non da ragazzini: sono questi i segreti del trekking, un’attività che ha sempre nuovi appassionati. Lo sa bene Antonello Azara: nato in Gallura, ha iniziato le sue personali esplorazioni di trekking all’età di 10 anni in compagnia del nonno che lo portava a raccogliere il miele da alveari selvatici in anfratti rocciosi e piccole grotte, là dove è più nascosto e buono. Oggi quelle piccole fughe in compagnia del nonno sono diventate il suo lavoro: organizza escursioni per gli ospiti dei nostri hotel della Costa, ma anche per i tanti galluresi che vogliono riassaporare un contatto più ruvido e genuino con un territorio ancestrale e affascinante. Per questo Antonello ha riscoperto le vecchie vie che collegavano gli antichi stazzi galluresi, fattorie che popolavano questa parte di Sardegna prima dell’avvento della Costa Smeralda. Un accordo con alcune associazioni specializzate ha permesso ad Antonello di affrontare le stesse vie anche con le bike, un’alternativa al trekking che permette di percorrere distanze più sostenute. Salire una montagna, un picco o un canalone è già avventura. Ma trovare il modo per scenderli in sicurezza, utilizzando corde e le necessarie attrezzature, rappresenta quel salto di qualità che rende questo tipo di trekking un’esperienza entusiasmante, coinvolgente e nuova: stiamo parlando di abseiling o scrambling che unisce il cammino al brivido di una via ferrata, affrontata in sicurezza e con

Antonello Azara knows this well: born in Gallura, he began his personal explorations of hiking at 10 years old, accompanied by his grandfather, who brought him to collect honey from wild beehives in rocky ravines and small caves, where they’re most hidden and the best kind. An agreement with a few specialized associations lets Antonello tackle the roads by bike as well, offering an alternative to hiking so visitors can cover greater distances. “Dio fornisce il vento ma l’uomo deve alzare le vele”: 1500 anni prima della creazione dell’America’s Cup Sant’Agostino aveva già indicato la strada da seguire per sfruttare gli elementi della natura e diventare un tutt’uno con il mare.

A fare tesoro di questo insegnamento sarà un team di persone che ha già trasformato quello che sembrava essere solo un sogno in una realtà, ambiziosa e umile allo stesso tempo, e lo farà nel nome della Sardegna e di Adelasia, ultima giudicessa regnante di Torres nel Medioevo: partecipare alla prossima edizione della Coppa America con una barca progettata e costruita interamente sull’Isola.

Un progetto nato da un messaggio Whatsapp inviato ad un amico da Renato Azara, imprenditore sardo e presiden“God gives us the wind, but man must raise the sails”: 1,500 years before the creation of America’s Cup, Saint Augustine had already indicated the road to follow for exploiting nature’s elements and becoming one with the sea.

Treasuring this teaching will be a team of people that have already transformed what seemed like a dream into reality: participating in the next edition of America’s Cup with a boat designed and built entirely on the Island. And they’ll do it in the name of Sardinia and Adelasia, the last Judge of Torres in the Middle Ages.

te della Fondazione Adelasia di Torres, dopo una regata ad Abu Dhabi: “Pensa cosa sarebbe per la Sardegna partecipare alla Coppa America…”. Detto fatto, è nata la fondazione ed è partito l’iter per l’iscrizione alla più antica competizione sportiva del mondo tuttora esistente: l’obiettivo è Auckland, Nuova Zelanda, 2021.

“Il progetto - spiega Azara - ha un’anima sarda, ma di una Sardegna inclusiva. La barca sarà costruita qui, abbiamo eccellenze e tecnologie che ce lo consentono, ma Adelasia di Torres è anche un modo per fare una rivoluzione attraverso la vela, per far cambiare la percezione dei sardi nei confronti del mare, che non deve essere visto come elemento di isolamento per chi vive su un’isola ma anche come mezzo di riscatto sociale e rilancio economico. Dopo la costruzione della barca che andrà alla Coppa America il cantiere resterà aperto e quindi il nostro progetto ha suscitato anche un interesse economico in chi ci supporta come sponsor. La ricerca dei soldi è finta e ci siamo iscritti perché il denaro non manca, mentre di solito scarseggiano le buone idee. E noi l’idea l’abbiamo avuta”.

La Regione Sardegna ha già dato l’appoggio istituzionale e per il finanziamento di questa impresa la Fondazione ha potuto contare su importanti nomi.

Nel 2018 la Coppa America, intesa come concetto e non

This is possible because our project has also raised a good amount of economic interest from various sponsors. We’ve finished looking for the money and we’ve signed up because there’s enough of it, while it’s usually good ideas that are lacking.

Poi nel 2019 faremo tre regate nel Mediterraneo, nel 2020 altre tre in tutto il mondo e per il 2021 saremo pronti per portare il nostro orgoglio sardo in Nuova Zelanda, con un equipaggio di valore e pronti a batterci per vincere la coppa; non si pensi che andiamo là a fare passerella”. Gli avversari saranno i nomi storici della vela mondiale, dai padroni di casa con Emirates New Zealand ai “cugini” di Luna Rossa, la Challenge of Record dell’edizione, ma anche a New York tutti sono al lavoro per riprendersi la coppa. Dal punto di vista prettamente sportivo Adelasia di Torres si batterà per il Club Nautico Arzachena, un club scelto per la sua popolarità e per il radicamento sul territorio: “Restiamo umili, visionari forse, ma umili e semplici - conclude Azara, già skipper di Adelasia alla Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup a Porto Cervo - e anche consapevoli che con la passione si riescono a fare anche le cose più difficili”.

La vela è alzata, la Coppa America è già all’orizzonte.

From a merely sport point of view, Adelasia di Torres will race for the Club Nautico Arzachena, a club chosen for its popularity and roots in the territory: “We will be humble. Visionaries, perhaps, but humble and simple,” concludes Azara, who was previously a skipper on the Adelasia at the Maxi Yacht Rolex Cup in Porto Cervo – “and also well-aware that with a bit of passion, people can do even the most difficult things.”

The sails have been raised, America’s Cup is already on the horizon.

E’ qui che Nikki Beach ha aperto la sua nuovissima location italiana, dopo Nikki Beach Versilia nel 2016.

“Abbiamo scelto Nikki Beach partner ideale per rendere l’offerta di intrattenimento della Costa Smeralda ancora più competitiva ed unica.” spiega Mario Ferraro, amministratore delegato di Smeralda Holding, che ha fortemente voluto il connubio tra questi due brand dell’ospitalità. La nuova bellissima struttura ha il look tipico del Nikki Beach, caratterizzata da un invitante design total white con dettagli in legno. All’interno del beach club: un ristorante con cucina raffinata di ispirazione mediterranea, aree relax, bar e zona mare con lettini e ombrelloni. A raccontarci il nuovo Nikki beach, è Lucia Penrod, Ceo del brand Nikki Beach.

Com’è nata l’idea del Nikki Beach quando è stato fondato nel 1998?

E’ nata 20 anni fa - a dicembre, infatti, inizieranno i festeggiamenti per il nostro ventesimo anniversariocome un giardino idilliaco in riva al mare, situato a Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. Si chiamava Café Nikki, in ricordo di Nicole Penrod, la figlia di Jack, mio marito. Il giardino ospitava anche un piccolo caffè, un giardino delle farfalle, uccelli, girasoli e alberi ad alto fusto, creando un’atmosfera magica, quasi zen. Abbiamo costruito il nostro successo sul passaparola: negli anni ’90 Miami rappresentava un luogo clou per le agenzie di modelle e l’industria cinematografica. Grazie al successo di Café Nikki, decidemmo di espanderci anche nella spiaggia adiacente al caffé, e così nacque il Nikki Beach. Oggi siamo in tutto il mondo: accogliamo vip, persone del posto, turisti e jet setter. Qui tutti si sentono speciali.

This is where Nikki Beach has opened its newest Italian location, following Nikki Beach Versilia in 2016. “We chose Nikki Beach as the ideal partner for making the entertainment offer in Costa Smeralda even more competitive and unique,” explains Mario Ferraro, the CEO of Smeralda Holding, who strongly wanted the collaboration between these two hospitality brands. The beautiful structure has the typical look of Nikki Beach, characterized by an inviting total white design with wood details. Inside the beach club: a restaurant with refined, Mediterranean-inspired cuisine, relaxation areas, a bar and a beach area with lounge chairs and umbrellas. Lucia Penrod, CEO of the brand, spoke to us about Nikki Beach.

Where did the idea for Nikki Beach come from when it was founded in 1998?

It was founded 20 years ago – in December; we’re actually about to begin our celebrations for the 20th anniversary – as a peaceful garden on the shore in Ocean Drive, Miami Beach. It was called Café Nikki, in memory of Nicole Penrod, my husband Jack’s daughter. The garden also had a small café, a butterfly garden, birds, sunflowers and tall trees, which created a magical, almost zen atmosphere. We built our success through word-ofmouth: in the 1990s, Miami was a prime city for modelling agencies and the film industry. Thanks to the success of Café Nikki, we decided to expand to the nearby beaches, and so Nikki Beach was born.

Una vacanza è relax, divertimento ed anche meritato riposo ma guai a pensare che questi tre termini facciano rima con inattività e sforzi ridotti al minimo perché, come insegnano i latini, mens sana in corpore sano: quindi allenarsi o fare attività fisica durante il soggiorno negli hotel Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Pitrizza o Cervo significa godersi ancora meglio il periodo di vacanza.

Lo sa bene Mauro Maggi, che coordina lo staff di quasi venti persone che segue la preparazione fisica degli ospiti degli hotel, dai più allenati anche in sport faticosi a chi invece cerca solo un po’ di tonicità o di movimento dolce. Quanto basta per tornare in forma ma anche esercizi e trattamenti per il recupero a seguito di infortuni o interventi, con esercizi di rieducazione motoria per ritrovare forza e mobilità. La lista delle attività da fare nei centri fronte mare - spiega Maggi - è comunque molto lunga e si va dal pilates al nuoto passando da stretching assistito, aquagym, ginnastica dolce per donne incinte o anziane, terapie manuali per i dolori articolari, yoga, pesistica ma anche boxe. E per uscire un po’ dagli schemi c’è il paddleboarding, equilibrio ed avventura su una particolare tavola da surf. Senza dimenticarci dei bambini, per i quali ci sono apposite attività motorie”.

Completa l’offerta uno degli sport più diffusi al mondo: il tennis, che in Costa Smeralda ha cambiato look sotto la supervisione dello Sport Consultant Alessandro Romano. Il binomio salute-racchetta si concretizza in un impianto sportivo ristrutturato, con un nuovo campo da padel e sette campi da tennis in superficie ITF2 di nuova generazione.

Gli ospiti potranno anche allenarsi con campioni del passato o partecipare ad attività sportive in grado di coinvolgere tutti gli appassionati di tennis.

Vacation means relaxation, entertainment and much deserved rest, but be careful not to think that these three words are synonymous with idleness and zero effort: exercising or doing physical activity during your stay at the hotels Cala di Volpe, Romazzino, Pitrizza or Cervo means enjoying your holiday even more. Mauro Maggi knows this well, as he leads a staff of about 20 people that follow the guests’ physical training, from those for whom exercise is a lifestyle to those who are just looking to tone their muscles or for a bit of soft movement. Just enough to get back into shape. But there’s also the option of rehabilitation treatments for guests who’ve been in accidents or gone through surgery, with a focus on re-establishing strength and mobility. Guests can also allow themselves an extra treat at the table, when they can work off the excess calories with a training aimed at weight loss and watching blood sugar and triglyceride levels. “The list of activities available at the seaside centres,” Maggi explains, “is very long and ranges from pilates, swimming, assisted stretching, water fitness, soft gymnastics for pregnant women and elderly guests, manual therapies for joint pain, yoga, weightlifting and even boxing. And just to step a little outside the box, there’s also paddle boarding. Children also have things to do, like specific motor activities.”Rounding out the activities is one of the most popular sports in the world, tennis, which in Costa Smeralda obtained a new look under the supervision of Sport Consultant Alessandro Romano. The combination of well-being and racket finds its place in a renovated sports structure, with a new padel court and seven tennis courts boasting the newest generation of ITF2 flooring.

Guests can train with champions of the past and participate in matches with other tennis enthusiasts of all levels.

Alla finestra dell’Hotel il profumo del mare arriva terso, con un soffio di sale amaro e una memoria antica. È un odore che s’insinua e attrae. Ed è così che il desiderio di immergersi in queste acque ci ha portati a chiedere il modo migliore per conoscere i luoghi più belli e segreti, quelli nei quali conoscere uno dei tanti volti di questa Sardegna che ci sta incantando con la sua bellezza unica e i suoi profumi così essenziali e terrestri.

La risposta dell’attentissimo staff sempre pronto a esaudire i desideri degli ospiti è un Lobster Rose Island, già ancorato lungo il molo su cui s’affaccia il nostro amato Cala di Volpe. Decidiamo di salpare alla scoperta delle spiagge e delle isole su cui s’affaccia il mondo di questa nostra estate; al timone Gianpaolo, Beach & Pool Service Coordinator Area Costa Smeralda che insieme al suo collega Carlo si muove sicuro e possiamo ammirare le sfumature di blu turchese del mare che s’apre davanti a noi, mentre sottocosta andiamo verso Nord avvolti da una vivace brezza di Maestrale e raggiungiamo la spiaggia del Grande Pevero, le cui acque sembrano seta leggera dalle sfumature più delicate dell’azzurro e le sue rocce e la sabbia bianca ci fanno scivolare dolcemente fino al golfo, mentre proseguiamo il viaggio raggiungendo Porto Cervo, affacciandoci sulla sua Piazzetta, la sua Marina e la sua spiaggia discreta. Da lontano scorgiamo il faro che in lontananza ci guida fino alla spiaggia del Pitrizza: davanti a noi si stende un fondale di sassolini minuscoli, che ci fanno capire dove finisca

Through the hotel window comes the clear smell of the sea, suffused with bitter salt and ancient memories. It is a smell that works its way into the blood and refuses to let go.

And the desire to immerse ourselves in these waters has led us to ask the best way of getting to know the most beautiful and most secret places, where we might apprehend one of the many faces of this Sardinia, which enchants us with its singular beauty and its smells, so essential, so earthy.

The faultlessly attentive staff, always ready to act upon the wishes of the guests, would answer Lobster Rose Island, moored along the pier which faces our beloved Cala di Volpe: so let’s weigh anchor and find beaches and islands on which to greet the Sardinian summer.

At the helm is Gianpaolo, the Costa Smeralda Area Beach and Pool Service Coordinator, who together with his colleague Carlo will take care of us while we admire the turquoise-blue shades of the sea that opens before us. We head north, hugging the coast, tickled by the north-west wind, and reach the beach of Grande Pevero, which silken waters seem a more delicate colour than azure. We gently slide into the gulf and proceed to Porto Cervo, which overlooks its Piazzetta, the Marina and the beach, discreetly tucked away. From afar we can glimpse the lighthouse that in the distance guides us to the beach of the Pitrizza: a bed of tiny stones stretches

la vegetazione e si apra l’arenile, quasi una meravigliosa piscina di granito… Scendiamo lentamente per una lunga nuotata in un’acqua che pare rifrangere le luci trasparenti di uno zaffiro e intanto posiamo lo sguardo su quella che è l’isola di Caprera, chiedendoci quale sarà la spiaggia più bella nella quale potremo immergerci.

La nostra imbarcazione dunque si volge verso l’arcipelago della Maddalena, che Gianpaolo ci spiega essere una zona protetta per la sua bellezza e per la flora e la fauna che lo popolano. Risaliamo verso ovest e il Maestrale ancora non ci abbandona e ci regala un alito fresco nella mattinata che è ormai quasi il mezzogiorno, quindi guardiamo passare Cala Portese e la sua piccola spiaggia spolverata di bianco e la macchia fatta di giallo caldo e verde asciutto di Cala Brigantina con le sue rocce levigate. La navigazione prosegue sullo specchio del mare che si fa sempre più intenso tra il turchese e il blu liquido che piano piano, avvicinan-

We slowly disembark for a leisurely swim in water that seems to refract the light to a transparent sapphire, and turn our gaze meanwhile on the island of Caprera, wondering which would be the most beautiful beach to rest on.

We re-embark, then, around the archipelago della Maddalena, which, Gianpaolo explains, is a zone protected for its beauty, flora and fauna.

We turn towards the west, the north-west wind still not abandoning us but treating us to a fresh puff. We see Cala Portese and its small, dusty white beach pass by, and Cala Brigantina, with its smooth rocks and scrub of warm yellows and dry greens.

Our course continues over the mirror of the sea, always intensifying in colour between turquoise and liquid blue, until gradually, as we near the

dosi alla costa, si trasforma in un tono di smeraldo trasparente di luce e capiamo che alle bellezze di questo luogo non ci sono confini, perché la scabra roccia fatta di sasso sembra diventare una piccola spiaggia di oro e diamanti liquefatti. È proprio su quella spiaggia che arriviamo a nuoto, muovendoci attenti tra i piccoli pesci che ci accarezzano le gambe e guardando il fondale che si rivela ricamato di verde e sassi levigati. Scopriamo solo sulla via del ritorno che Cala Coticcio è conosciuta con il soprannome di Tahiti, per le sue caratteristiche uniche e sottilmente esotiche anche per la Costa Smeralda. L’ultima isola che vediamo da vicino è quella di Mortorio, con le sue coste frastagliate e il suo aspetto scabro dal fascino rude, un altro luogo dai caratteri unici e rari, come ogni angolo di questo arcipelago. Il rientro avviene così, guardando il mare, i suoi golfi e le sue calette, e il pontile del Cala di Volpe si avvicina e i profumi di mirto ed elicriso ci accolgono, facendoci sentire a casa.

It is precisely on this beach that we have come to swim, moving carefully through the little fish that brush our legs, looking down at a seabed wreathed with vegetation and smooth stones.

Only on the return journey do we discover that Cala Coticcio is nicknamed Tahiti, on account of its unique, subtle exoticism. The last island that we see from up close is Mortorio, which has a rough charm to its jagged coastline and stark aspect: it is another rare place, like every corner of this archipelago. Thus we return, looking out over the sea, its coves and its bays, and the jetty of the Cala di Volpe comes into view as the scent of myrtle and everlasting flowers reaches out to meet us, making us feel at home.

La tradizione delle terme, in Sardegna, si rivela non soltanto in luoghi di relax e rigenerazione fisica e spirituale come l’elegante e nuovissima spa dell’Hotel Romazzino - che regala agli ospiti esclusive coccole firmate MyBlend di Clarins - ma ha una radice antica di grande valore nello spazio delle Terme di Fordongianus. Costruite in due distinti secoli dai Romani che dominarono l’Isola per lungo tempo non riuscendo mai a soggiogarla completamente - le antiche Terme furono costruite dove s’incontravano le due vie principali che mantenevano in comunicazione l’isola. Le proprietà curative delle acque di Caddas, come da secoli sono chiamate, sono favorite dal sottostante banco vulcaniche e sono oggetto di continui studi e ricerche mentre l’imponente struttura delle terme romane che ancora oggi i visitatori possono apprezzare è nitidamente frutto di due periodi di costruzione, afferenti al I e al III secolo quando l’Impero dedicava una particolare attenzione all’architettura, utilizzando materiali in situ (come in questo caso la trachite grigia) e apportando innovazioni come la pavimentazione a mosaico di cui rimangono ampi frammenti. Di grande modernità il soffitto in pasta vitrea azzurra, che pare anticipare le terapie fotocromatiche oggi così in voga, mentre l’hospitium aveva né più né meno le medesime caratteristiche che presentano le stazioni termali che offrono ai loro ospiti ampi spazi nei quali riposare, ristorarsi e raccogliersi. La particolare attenzione alla piacevolezza si rivela nei rivestimenti di lastre di marmo, mentre un ninfeo mantiene intatta la sua grazia di spazio consacrato alle femminili divinità dell’acqua.

The tradition of thermal baths in Sardinia is revealed not only in places of relaxation and physical and spiritual regeneration, like the elegant and brand-new spa at Hotel Romazzino - which bestows its guests with exclusive treatments signed MyBlend by Clarins - but has esteemed and ancient origins at the Fordongianus Thermal Baths. Built by the Romans over two separate centuries – who dominated the Island for many years, never being able to completely subjugate it – the ancient baths were established where the two main communication roads met. The curative properties of the Caddas waters, as they’ve been called for centuries, are fostered by the underlying lava bench and are subject to continuous studies and research, while the imposing structure of the Roman baths that visitors can still admire today is the distinct result of two building periods, namely the 1st and 3rd centuries, when the Empire dedicated particular attention to the structure, using in situ materials (like the grey trachyte) and creating innovations like the mosaic flooring, large fragments of which have survived to this day. The blue glass ceiling is highly modern, which seems to foreshadow the light-sensitive therapies that are so in vogue today, while the hospitium had neither more nor less of the same characteristics found in thermal baths, which offer guests large spaces in which to rest and collect their thoughts.

Particular attention to satisfaction is revealed in the marble slab cladding, while a nymphaeum maintains intact the grace of this space dedicated to the female water deities.

Fordongianus presenta un’altra preziosa e rara testimonianza secolare, ovvero la cosiddetta Casa Aragonese, la cui struttura della fine del XVI secolo e le peculiarità nella decorazione degli “infissi” sono un unicum non soltanto in Sardegna ma anche nell’intero bacino del Mediterraneo. La Casa in trachite rossa e rosata, infatti, risale agli anni in cui l’Isola fu uno dei punti cardine delle rotte che dall’Aragona dei Trastamara giungevano al sud dell’Italia e oltre.

Oggi segni della tradizione catalana a Fordongianus si riconoscono nei particolari come le grondaie di tegole o le aperture delle facciate incorniciate di trachite oltre che dalle colonne decorate secondo moduli propri dell’interno della Sardegna, mentre la contemporaneità ha le forme delle opere che da decenni rimangono in questo luogo lungo le rive del Tirso dopo i Simposi di Scultura qui organizzati ogni anno.

The large swimming pool, the cornerstone of the baths’ earlier construction, definitely enjoyed a mixture of hot and cold waters that together reached just the right temperature and which were conserved in tanks installed uphill, making a stay in this place both intense and regenerating.

Fordongianus also has another priceless and rare trace of centuries-old history: the so-called Casa Aragonese, whose late 16th-century structure and the peculiar decorations of the “fixtures” are unique not only in Sardinia but in the entire Mediterranean basin. The Casa, with red and pink trachyte, dates to the years when the Island was one of the key points on the routes that led to southern Italy and beyond from Trastámara-era Aragon. Today, traces of Catalan tradition in Fordongianus can be seen in the details, like the gutters or the openings on the facades framed by trachyte, as well as the columns decorated according to Sardinian styles, while contemporary modes are found in the works that for decades remained in this place on the banks of the Tirso after the Sculpture Symposiums organized here every year.

These elements of Engage Summit are immensely distinguished and a sure success, clear from the moment the event’s participants came together from all corners of the world to discuss the profession and participate in wedding-related workshops and initiatives, with talks by many of the island’s top companies, including important local businesses, which for the event staged a completely Sardinian wedding, collecting and recounting with skill and precision the many customs of the communities involved.

Upon arrival, participants were immersed in the lively climate befitting of a wedding theme thanks to a series of set-ups characterized by the most glamourous Sardinian tradition and hints of green, pink and candles, each of which offered a new face to a thousand-year-old practice through elegance and romanticism: the Cala di Volpe was enveloped in a magical evening of candles and rich aromas.

During the day, there were many rendezvous dedicated to encountering the land of Sardinia and its distinctive facets, thanks to coffee breaks that were organized with themes like “rural style,” and “women pastry chefs,” which were even more engaging because of the waitstaff’s clothing, whose uniforms included sailor’s caps or Sardinian bonette. Rounding out the event were the dessert party and a gala dinner that involved many sponsors and all those who contributed to making Engage Summit an unforgettable event, like the Costa Smeralda and its hospitality.

Quasi impossibile, se non si è mai stati all’Hotel Cala di Volpe e non se n’è respirata la vibrante atmosfera. Il sole comincia a tingersi dei caldi toni del tramonto, ma c’è ancora luce quando si entra nella hall dell’albergo. Un trionfo di fiori inaugura un percorso di bellezza visiva che arriva fino a bordo piscina, dove Tonino Serra, partner on interior design degli alberghi Marriott in Costa Smeralda, ha allestito per gli ospiti delle due serate un set da Mille e una notte. In un incontro misterioso, in un sodalizio che ha contribuito a creare uno stile unico e imitatissimo, ma comunque irraggiungibile, nel tempo e nello spazio, si cela una delle storie che hanno segnato il mito della Costa Smeralda. Nel pantheon fondativo trova posto Giovanni Antonio Sulas, artista, fine conoscitore della cultura materiale sarda, prezioso e discreto consulente con un ruolo decisivo nella definizione dello stile della Costa Smeralda. Nel 1959 gli venne affidato l’incarico di consulente artistico del “Progetto Sardegna”, voluto dalla Regione sarda e dall’O.E.C.E., Organizzazione europea per la cooperazione economica, che aveva il compito di coordinare gli aiuti previsti dal Piano Marshall e utilizzarli anche per promuovere la rinascita economica della Sardegna. Il progetto investiva nella promozione di linee di sviluppo locali, con effetti proficui per gli scambi commerciali e per il rinnovamento delle produzioni. Un incarico, un “cursus honorum” nella piccola realtà sarda, che proiettarono Sulas verso uno scenario internazionale. Probabilmente qui si inserisce lo snodo decisivo che lo portò in contatto con il principe Karim Aga Khan, che in quegli anni creava i prodromi di un sogno chiamato Costa Smeralda. La riservatezza di Sulas non ha mai consentito di svelare l’arcano di un connubio che ha creato uno stile, anche se si dice che fu l’avvocato francese André Ardoin, plenipotenziario del Principe, a contattare per primo il professore nuorese. Un nome storico per la Costa Smeralda quello di Ardoin. Fu infatti uno dei “magnifici sei” che con Karim Aga Khan, Patrick Guinness, Felix Bigio, John Duncan Miller e René Podbielski firmarono l’atto di nascita del Consorzio Costa Smeralda.

One of the stories that marked the myth of the Costa Smeralda is concealed in a mysterious meeting, a friendship that contributed to the creation of a unique and intimate style, yet unattainable in time and space. One such protagonist of this fundamental story is Giovanni Antonio Sulas, artist and impeccable expert of Sardinian culture, precious and discreet consultant with a crucial role in defining the style of the Costa Smeralda. In 1959, he was appointed the job of artistic advisor for the “Progetto Sardegna,” commissioned by the Region of Sardinia and the OECD, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development, who had the task of coordinating the economic assistance provided under the Marshall Plan and using it to promote the economic rebirth of Sardinia. The project invested in the promotion of local development policies, with lucrative effects for trade and the revitalization of manufacturing. A task, a “cursus honorum” in little Sardinia, that launched Sulas onto the international scene. This was probably the crucial turning point that brought him into contact with Prince Karim Aga Khan, who in those years was busy creating the preludes to a dream called Costa Smeralda. Sulas’s discretion never allowed him to reveal the mystery of the bond that created a style, even if it’s said that it was the French lawyer André Ardoin, plenipotentiary to the Prince, who first contacted the Nuoro-based professor. Ardoin’s name is historic for the Costa Smeralda. Indeed, he was one of the “magnificent six” that, with Karim Aga Khan, Patrick Guinness, Felix Bigio, John Duncan Miller and René Podbielski, signed the founding deed for the Consorzio Costa Smeralda. Ardoin was the attorney, but also advisor and trusted ally of Karim’s grandfather, Aga Khan III. THE MEETING. Letters, writings and documentary bequests have never

le circostanze nelle quali avvenne l’incontro, quelle che crearono le premesse di quel breve ma proficuo sodalizio. Restano gli effetti di straordinaria bellezza di un connubio umano e artistico che, inserito all’interno di un gruppo di lavoro che annoverava veri e propri fuoriclasse dell’architettura, del gu-

sto e dello stile dell’epoca, avrebbe impresso il suo marchio sulle future generazioni. “Nessuno sa in quali circostanze avvenne quell’incontro, ma certamente negli anni più fecondi della sua attività il professor Sulas creò un’importante rete di artigiani, valorizzando il lavoro e le creazioni locali – spiega Francesca Manca, avvocato, presidente della Fondazione “Giovanni Antonio Sulas”, nata con lo scopo di aiutare i giovani nel percorso di formazione, attraverso l’assegnazione di borse di studio -. La spinta e l’intuizione dell’O.E.C.E. fu quella di unire gli artigiani allo scopo di dare uno sviluppo commerciale al loro lavoro, creando prodotti unici e preziosi, con uno stile sobrio, ma elegante e raffinato. Un contesto nel quale il lavoro di questi artigiani venne valorizzato, in coincidenza con la nascita degli alberghi e delle prime ville della Costa Smeralda”. I capolavori nati dalla matita di Jacques Couelle, dall’hotel Cala di Volpe alla prima villa del Principe, prendono forma arricchiti dagli arredi suggeriti da Sulas: le tende di Samugheo, i cuscini in tela grossa tessuti a mano e ricamati dalle abili mani delle signore di Oliena.

Al Cala di Volpe, emblema di stile, trovano posto i pouf di asfodelo intrecciato. Poi cuscini di pelle di capra conciata e, nella villa del Principe, arrivarono i divani bianchi creati da artigiani dell’Oristanese. Il Pitrizza, l’Hotel Cervo e il Cala di Volpe ospitano ancora le creazioni di quel periodo denso di creatività, come la sedia Sedattu e quelle di modello tradizionale sardo, tutte rivisitate da Sulas. Poi le sedute, create a quattro mani con Jacques Couelle appositamente per il Cala di Volpe.

LA STORIA. All’inizio degli anni Sessanta Giovanni Antonio Sulas entrò a far parte del gruppo di lavoro che, per conto del principe Karim Aga Khan, stava iniziando a costruire gli alberghi e lasciare al mondo i primi segni del “modello” Costa Smeral-

“No one knows the background of that meeting, but what is known is that in the most fruitful years of his career, Su-

las created an important network of artisans, promoting local work and creations,” explains Francesca Manca, lawyer and president of the “Giovanni Antonio Sulas” Foundation, established to help young professionals during their education by awarding scholarships. “The drive and intuition of the OECD was to bring together artisans with the aim of offering commercial development of their work, creating unique and precious objects that had a sober yet elegant and refined style. The work of these artisans was being valorized precisely at the same time hotels and the first villas were opening in Costa Smeralda.” The masterpieces made by Jacques Couelle’s pencil took form, from the Hotel Cala di Volpe to the first Villa del Principe, enriched by furnishings suggested by Sulas: Samugheo curtains, coarse pillows weaved by hand and embroideries by the skilled hands of the ladies of Oliena. At the Cala di Volpe, an emblem of style, there are footstools made of woven asphodels. Then there are the pillows of tanned goat leather and, in the Villa del Principe, white couches created by artisans from Oristano. The Pitrizza, Hotel Cervo and Cala di Volpe are home to other creations made during that intense period of creativity, like the Sedattu chair and traditional Sardinian seating, all reinterpreted

by Sulas. There are also the chairs that were created by Jacques Couelle and co. specifically for the Cala di Volpe.

HISTORY. In the early 1960s, Giovanni Antonio Sulas became part of the group that, on behalf of Prince Karim Aga Khan, was beginning to build hotels and define the first facets of the Costa Smeralda’s “model”. Sulas was the consultant

da. Sulas fu il consulente per l’arredo dell’Hotel Cala di Volpe, del Pitrizza, Romazzino e Hotel Cervo. Successivamente collaborò per lo stile in diverse ville di privati. Il suo ruolo è stato quello di un arredatore e designer: lavorando a stretto contatto con i prestigiosi architetti coinvolti (da Michele Busiri Vici a Luigi Vietti e l’estroso Jacques Couelle e suo figlio Savin), Sulas scelse lo stile di mobili, complementi d’arredo, tessuti per tende, divani, tovagliati e copriletto. Con questo lavoro stabilì la cifra stilistica che caratterizzerà per decenni lo stile degli interni negli hotel di lusso della prima Costa Smeralda. Diventò ricercatore e collettore di una serie di produzioni e lavorazioni che vennero interamente fatte in Sardegna e si appoggiò al vasto bacino di artigiani conosciuti negli anni del “Progetto Sardegna”. Tessitrici, falegnami, intagliatori, cestai, ricamatrici: da Oliena a Orosei, da Samugheo a Flussio, alla produzione per gli alberghi della Costa Smeralda lavorarono numerose realtà produttive di tutta l’Isola. “Fu la sua sfida più grande, quella di trovare arredi e manufatti adatti a quegli alberghi e alle ville di lusso - conferma la Manca -. Un simile ambiente internazionale regalava grandi potenzialità e una esposizione all’insegna della finezza per piccole e grandi professioni del mondo dell’artigianato artistico sardo. Lui ebbe un fondamentale ruolo di indirizzo”.

for furnishing the hotels Cala di Volpe, Pitrizza, Romazzino and Cervo. He later collaborated on the style of many private villas. His role was as interior designer: working closely with the top architects involved in the project (from Michele Busiri Vici to Luigi Vietti to the ingenious Jacques Couelle and his son Savin), Sulas chose the style of the furniture, accessories, curtain fabrics, couches, table clothes and bedspreads. With this work, he established the style that would characterize the furnishings inside the luxury hotels of the first Costa Smeralda for decades. He became a scholar and collector of a series of productions and works that were made entirely in Sardinia and supported the vast network of artisans he met during the “Progetto Sardegna”. Textile workers, carpenters, engravers, basket weavers, embroiderers: from Oliena to Orosei, Samugheo to Flussio, many people from all over the Island worked on designing the hotels in Costa Smeralda. “It was his greatest challenge, finding furniture and objects suitable for these luxury hotels and villas,” says Manca. “This international setting bestowed immense potential and excellent exposure for small and large professions in the world of Sardinian artistic craftsmanship. He played a fundamental role in its direction.”

I risultati del Gruppo Smeralda, società italiana di Qatar Holding, braccio operativo di Qatar Investment Authority, per la stagione 2017 hanno superato la soglia dei cento milioni di euro, ma l’Amministratore Delegato Mario Ferraro considera questa stagione record un punto di partenza dopo aver portato a termine la prima fase dell’ambizioso piano quinquennale di ampliamento e ammodernamento dell’offerta turistica della Costa Smeralda.

Il fatturato dello scorso anno ha superato i 100 milioni di euro, con un EBITDA di oltre il 33%, una cifra notevole.

I numeri conseguiti nel 2017 dimostrano che l’impatto della nostra strategia è estremamente positivo. È già visibile un allungamento della stagione, che quest’anno ha avuto i primi flussi ad aprile. Tutto questo non sarebbe possibile senza il supporto del nostro azionista, Qatar Investment Authority, con il quale ci confrontiamo costantemente.

Quali strategie avete adottato?

La diversificazione dell’offerta turistica è alla base della nostra strategia. È necessario adeguarsi alle mutevoli esigenze del mercato. Per questo abbiamo iniziato collaborazioni con brand globali del mercato turistico di lusso. Il restyling delle strutture, per cui abbiamo scelto alcuni degli architetti più famosi del mondo, è un’altra componente fondamentale.

Il 2018 è l’inizio di un imponente piano quinquennale...

Nel 2018 presentiamo tantissime novità di cui siamo molto orgogliosi. Per il Cala di Volpe, le prime camere disegnate da Bruno Moinard e il nuovo beach club disegnato da Matteo Thun nella spiaggia di L’Itriceddi. Al Romazzino la SPA in partnership con MyBlend by Clarins, e al Cervo le “next generation meeting and conference rooms” disegnate sempre da Thun. Sul fronte della ristorazione c’è l’arrivo del prestigioso Novikov nella Piazzetta a Porto Cervo, la creati-

The results of the 2017 season for Smeralda Holding, the Italian company under Qatar Holding, the operative branch of Qatar Investment Authority, exceeded the 100 million-euro mark, but CEO Mario Ferraro considers this season record a starting point after having concluded the first phase of the ambitious five-year plan to expand and modernize the tourist offerings in Costa Smeralda.

Last year’s revenue surpassed 100 million euro, with an EBITDA of 33%, a considerable sum.

What strategies have you adopted?

Diversifying the value proposition of the destination is at the base of our strategy. It’s important to adapt to the changing needs of the market. For this reason, we’ve begun collaborations with global brands in the luxury tourism sector. The restyling of our Hotels, Bars and Restaurants, for which we chose some of the most famous architects in the world, is another fundamental component.

2018 marks the beginning of an impressive five-year plan...

In 2018, we’re going to present many news that we’re really proud of. At the Cala di Volpe, we open the first rooms designed by Bruno Moinard and a new beach club designed

by Matteo Thun on L’Itriceddi beach. At the Romazzino, we inaugurate a SPA in partnership with MyBlend by Clarins. And at the Cervo, we are launching the “next generation meeting and conference rooms,” also designed by Thun. On the culinary side, we have the arrival of the Novikov Restaurant in the Piazzetta in Porto Cervo, the creativity of Antonio Mellino,

Per quanto riguarda l’intrattenimento e i servizi?

Fondamentale l’arrivo di due importanti brand internazionali. Il Nikki Beach, approdato a Cala Petra Ruja, e IGY Marinas, subentrato nella gestione della Marina di Porto Cervo.

Quali altre novità caratterizzano la stagione estiva 2018?

Abbiamo elaborato un calendario che va da aprile a ottobre, con oltre 70 eventi. Il progetto più ambizioso è Il Waterfront Costa Smeralda nel Porto Vecchio che ospiterà eventi e concept store di prestigiosi marchi del lusso.

Cosa succederà nei prossimi anni in Costa Smeralda?

Nel 2019 riapriremo il Cala di Volpe completamente ristrutturato, inaugereremo una SPA all’Hotel Pitrizza e daremo un nuovo look al Ristorante Pomodoro e al Bar Portico in Piazzetta. Infine, in Marina, Piero Lissoni sta disegnando la nuova Captain’s Lounge. Nei tre anni successivi completeremo il piano con le ristrutturazioni dell’Hotel Cervo, del Pitrizza, del Romazzino, il Tennis Club, il Pevero Golf e faremo grandi interventi sulle infrastrutture, inclusa la totale pedonalizzazione della Costa Smeralda.

What about entertainment and services?

The arrival of two important international brands such as Nikki Beach, at Cala Petra Ruja, and IGY Marinas, now responsible for managing the Porto Cervo Marina.

What other changes can we expect for the 2018 season?

We’ve developed a calendar of over 70 events, running from April to October. The most ambitious project is the Waterfront Costa Smeralda in the Old Port, which will host events and concept stores by prestigious luxury brands.

What will happen over the next few years?

In 2019, we will reopen the completely renovated Cala di Volpe, inaugurate a SPA at Hotel Pitrizza and create a new look for the restaurant Il Pomodoro and Bar Portico in the Piazzetta. Finally, for our Marina, Piero Lissoni is designing the new Captain’s Lounge. Over the following three years, we will complete the renovation plans for the hotels Cervo, Pitrizza and Romazzino, the Tennis Club and Pevero Golf, as well as make large-scale interventions in infrastructures, including the total pedestrianization of the Costa Smeralda.
