The mountain huts of the Dolomites are truly scenic terraces to be experienced. Cortina’s high-altitude location, overlooking its unmistakable basin, offers jawdroppingly beautiful views. While still retaining their traditional roots, the mountain huts offer travellers and tourists not only a unique yet friendly atmosphere, but also an experience that’s increasingly sought by visitors, in terms of hospitality, food and service. The term ‘terrace on the Dolomites’ could have been coined for Rifugio Lagazuoi, perched 2752 metres high on the summit of the mountain whose name it bears and surrounded by an ocean of mountains, from Cunturines to the peaks of Fanes and the mighty Tofane group, the Odles to magnificent Marmolada. On clear winter’s days, dawn and sunset are a mystical experience, verging on the holy when accompanied by a glass of wine on the terrace or an early morning ski run in the silence only found in the high mountains. The Lagazuoi is located within the Ski Tour Super8, a skiing itinerary that’s astounding for the beauty of its scenery and its views of eight of the most famous Dolomites - Tofana, Pelmo, Civetta, Marmolada, Fanes, Averau, 5 Torri and Conturines - with the possibility of taking a break at one of the area’s most celebrated venues. The ideal spots for this ski tour are Rifugio Scoiattoli, Rifugio Averau and Rifugio Col Gallina. The latter two are also perfect for those who prefer cocktails to skis, easy to reach by car and just the place for an informal lunch or snack. On the roadside towards Giau, we come to the mountain hut and restaurant Da Aurelio, a gourmet heaven offering traditional dishes with a contemporary twist. From here, ski lifts take you up to Peziè de Parù and Rifugio Dibona, whose panoramic terrace hosts concerts and events that combine stunning views, highclass musicians and the excellent cooking of the Recafina family who own the premises. Nearby are Rifugio Duca d’Aosta, Baita Piè Tofana, Capanna Ra Valles I rifugi delle Dolomiti sono vere e proprie terrazze panoramiche da vivere. L’alta quota di Cortina d’Ampezzo, affacciata sull’inconfondibile conca, regala squarci di bellezza commovente. I suoi rifugi, pur restando nel solco della tradizione, sanno offrire al turista e al viaggiatore non solo un ambiente familiare e unico al tempo stesso, ma anche un’ospitalità sempre più ricercata da chi va in montagna, in termini di cucina, accoglienza, servizi. Il titolo di ‘Terrazza sulle Dolomiti’ spetta per antonomasia al Rifugio Lagazuoi, arroccato sulla cima del monte omonimo, a 2752 metri, circondato da un oceano di vette: dalle Cunturines alle Cime di Fanes, alle possenti Tofane, alle Odle, alla splendente Marmolada. Nelle limpide giornate invernali, le albe e i tramonti sono un’esperienza mistica, che assurgono al divino se accompagnate da uno dei vini del rifugio da degustare nel dehors o una sciata di primissima mattina, nel silenzio che solo l’alta montagna sa regalare. Il Lagazuoi si trova all’interno dello Ski Tour Super8, un percorso sci ai piedi che sorprende per la bellezza del paesaggio che si attraversa e la vista su otto delle montagne dolomitiche più famose - Tofana, Pelmo, Civetta, Marmolada, Fanes, Averau, 5 Torri, Conturines - con possibilità di ristoro in alcuni dei rifugi più rinomati della zona. Punti di appoggio ideali per questo ski tour sono il Rifugio Scoiattoli, il Rifugio Averau, Rifugio Col Gallina. Ideali, questi secondi due, anche per chi allo sci preferisce i bombardini: facilmente raggiungibili con la macchina, sono perfetti per un pranzo o una merenda informale. In direzione Giau, affacciato sulla strada, troviamo il rifugio e ristorante Da Aurelio, paradiso dei gourmet, che offre piatti della tradizione con un twist contemporaneo. - the highest pizzeria in the Dolomites - and Rifugio El Camineto, whose adjoining restaurant offers views, a great atmosphere and an impeccable menu combining tradition with a touch of creativity. Finally there’s the Masi Wine Bar, a foodie landmark for skiers and mountain-lovers which also welcomes those who prefer strolling Corso Italia and the more sophisticated side of Cortina. So what brings the skiers and the designer handbag brigade together? The desire to enjoy a glass of Amarone on the large outdoor terrace, against the extraordinary backdrop of the Tofane, Cristallo and the extensive Cortina basin. Both the Masi Wine Bar and Ra Valles can be reached by the new Freccia nel Cielo cable car, a stone’s throw from the centre of Cortina. Not far from the centre of Cortina d’Ampezzo and the ski slopes is Baita Fraina, wood-clad B&B with a view, where you can relax in the tranquillity of nature and the sunshine of the terrace with fabulous views of the Dolomites. Perfect if you want to stay close to the town without getting in the car, there’s also the Faloria area, which combines the convenience of vicinity and splendid views. The jewel in the crown of Rifugio Faloria - located at the cable car arrival point - is the food, with a predominance of grilled meats. After a lavish lunch, those wishing to work off some of the sausages and polenta can take the half-hour walk from Rifugio Faloria to Rifugio Capanna Tondi (2327 m), on the ridge that separates the Tonde de Faloria from the slopes of Monte Ciasadio. The views are magnificent, but the desserts and the famous grappoteca should not be missed either. The ability to disconnect and spend some peaceful time in the mountains is a human need that’s increasingly widespread. In high season, these places are not exactly quiet at lunchtime, but just wait until the tourist tide dies down a little, and you can fully enjoy the place with all the respect and care merited by the mountains and the people who choose to take care of them every day from inside the huts. Sia il Masi Wine Bar sia Ra Valles sono raggiungibili con la nuova cabinovia Freccia nel Cielo, a pochi passi dal centro di Cortina. A poca distanza dal centro di Cortina d’Ampezzo e dalle piste da sci, si trova la Baita Fraina, un B&B arredato in legno con vista panoramica, per rilassarsi nella quiete della natura, sulla terrazza al sole con una meravigliosa vista sulle Dolomiti. Perfetta per chi desidera restare nei paraggi della Regina delle Dolomiti senza spostarsi con l’auto, è anche l’area del Faloria, che coniuga la comodità della vicinanza a splendidi panorami. Fiore all’occhiello del Rifugio Faloria - situato all’arrivo della funivia - è la cucina, con una predilezione per la carne alla brace. Per chi, dopo il lauto pranzo, volesse smaltire un po’ di salsiccia e polenta, è consigliata la passeggiata di una mezz’oretta che dal Rifugio Faloria porta al Rifugio Capanna Tondi (2327 m), sulla cresta che separa i Tonde de Faloria dalle pendici del Monte Ciasadio. Bellissimo il panorama, ma imperdibili anche i dolci e la famosissima grappoteca. Potere staccare la spina e trascorrere momenti di tranquillità in quota è una necessità umana sempre più diffusa. Questi luoghi non sono esattamente eremitici all’ora di pranzo in alta stagione, ma è sufficiente aspettare che il flusso turistico si quieti per godere pienamente di questi luoghi, con il rispetto e l’attenzione che merita l’alta montagna e chi, all’interno del rifugio, sceglie quotidianamente di prendersene cura. Perché questo è il rifugista: l’anello di congiunzione tra la società e i ghiacciai, tra le città e le cime dove corrono soltanto i camosci.

RIFUGIO AVERAU This hut on Mount Averau welcomes visitors in a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can stay over or simply enjoy a lunch of traditional Ampezzo and Friuli specialities. RIFUGIO COL GALLINA This mountain hut within the Super8 Ski Tour circuit offers fabulous views over the pistes and trails. PEZIÈ DE PARÙ The small Peziè de Parù is just five kilometres from the centre of Cortina d’Ampezzo, on the road from Pocol to the Giau Pass. Don’t miss the utterly traditional cooking; there are also three delightful guest rooms. RIFUGIO DUCA D’AOSTA The Duca d’Aosta, on the south-eastern slope of the Tofane group, boasts unparalleled views of the Ampezzo valley. A great place to sample delicious home cooking on the panoramic terrace.

RIFUGIO FALORIA Rifugio Faloria is located at the arrival point of the cable car of the same name, which ascends from Cortina d’Ampezzo. It enjoys one of the best views in the area: a panorama of the most famous peaks of the Dolomites, including Pomagagnon, Croda Rossa, Croda del Becco, Croda Da Lago and Pelmo.
