He has founded and runs, with his wife Ausilia Veneruso, the La Conchiglia Editions which counts more than two-hundred titles which among many are dedicated to history and literature of the island. Ausilia Veneruso, was born in Capri and has created, from 1982, four book stores which she runs between Capri, Anacapri and Rome. She has realized, together with her husband Riccardo Esposito, the La Conchiglia Editions and the homonymous Cultural Association which organizes, each year, book presentations and cultural manifestations.

When did your passion for fashion start?

When I used to sew the dresses for my Barbie doll. It was the early Seventies, but I became aware of it a long time after that.

I was sure I would have continued the path chosen by my parents, doing with numbers, but now I feel complete: I am a creative talent with mathematics and economics running through my veins.

The greatest emotion you have felt in this job?

From the outside I look very controlled, but I always give space to emotions, every day, even only for a good variation of color.

What do Full Style collections express?

Today, to think of a clothing collection in a society I which women are given many roles, behaving differently in different situations, means to acknowledge the fact that clothes are also our identity: beside representing us, they must emphasize our strong points and we make us feel comfortable and attractive.

This is what I always try to do with Full Style. The result is a collection that is loved by people because it is easy to wear, match and combine to create our own “Style de la Vie”, also with clothes.

What do you expect from this store in Capri?

What I basically expect from all other stores: young ladies and women that can find there not only a product, but an idea of style that I have designed for them.

Quando è nata la sua passione per la moda?

Quando cucivo i vestitini per la mia Barbie. Erano i primi anni ’70, ma l’ho riconosciuta molto dopo. Ero convinta di dover perseguire i percorsi familiari fatti di numeri e matematica, ma ora mi sento completa, perché sono una creativa con la matematica e l’economia nel sangue.

L’emozione più grande che ha provato in questo lavoro?

Apparentemente sono molto controllata ma do molto spazio alle emozioni, tutti i giorni, anche solo per una semplice variante colore riuscita bene.

Cosa esprimono le collezioni Full Style?

Pensare oggi a una collezione di abbigliamento, in un contesto di vita in cui ogni donna assume svariati ruoli, numerosi volti, significa ricordarsi che vestirci è anche il nostro biglietto da visita che, oltre a rappresentarci, deve valorizzarci, farci stare comode e farci sentire attraenti. In Fullstyle metto sempre questo pensiero. E il risultato è una collezione che piace perché è anche facile da portare, da abbinare, da assemblare per costruire il proprio ‘Style de Vie’ anche attraverso l’abbigliamento.

Cosa si aspetta da questo store caprese?

Quello che mi aspetto da tutti gli altri stores, ragazze e donne felici che escono non con un prodotto, ma con un’idea di stile pensata da me.

When did your passion for jewelry design start?

I have grown up looking closely at my mother working as a jeweler. With the passing of the years I began to feel a special love for this unique sector, both complicated and fascinating, which mentally stimulates all designers.

What do you wish to communicate with your creations?

The jewelry sector has lost the fascination related to its uniqueness and manual skills, with ever more serial products without a soul. I try to fill my items with thoughts, emotions, feelings. They have simple lines and forms that remind of a child’s drawing.

What are your sources of inspiration?

A movie, a sunset or a view that touches me, but also a song or a meeting. Everything I can experience that stimulates my senses can inspire me and be turned into a jewel.

A meeting that has changed your life?

The fact that I have discovered and got to know myself better now that I have matured has surely changed my life. The awareness of the fact that I could turn my passion into MY career has come with age and experience. I own a lot to some dear people that have believed in me and encouraged me to achieve better results. My family, my annoying, lovely boyfriend and some great friends of mine.

Rossella Catapano. She has attended courses in gemology and jewelry design at the Polytechnic University of Milan. Once she was back in her native Capri, she decided to give life to a unique Made-in-Italy jewelry collection with a Mediterranean fascination 24 Capri | The Divine Coast

Come è nata la passione per il jewel design?

Sono cresciuta seguendo mia madre nel suo lavoro di gioielliera. Nel corso degli anni ho maturato un amore unico per questo settore particolare, difficile ma estremamente affascinante che riesce a stimolare la fantasia di ogni designer.

Cosa vuole trasmettere con le sue creazioni?

Il settore del gioiello ultimamente ha perso il suo fascino di unicità e manualità, proponendo sempre più prodotti seriali, senza anima. Nei miei piccoli oggetti inserisco un pensiero, un’emozione, uno stato d’animo. Hanno forme semplici e lineari, ricordano i disegni di un bambino.

Quali sono le sue fonti d’ispirazione?

Un film, un tramonto, uno scorcio che mi emoziona ma anche una canzone, un incontro. Tutto ciò che è esperienza e stimola la mia soggettiva percezione può diventare ispirazione e materializzarsi in un gioiello.

C’è un incontro che le ha cambiato la vita?

Incontrare me stessa e conoscermi in un’età più matura mi ha certamente cambiato la vita. La consapevolezza di poter far diventare la mia passione un lavoro mio, l’ho acquisita col tempo. Tanto devo a persone a me carissime che hanno creduto in me e mi hanno spronato a diventare grande. La mia famiglia, il mio insopportabile e adorabile ragazzo e amici importanti.

How did you get the idea for Kukai?

Kukai has been my Christmas present. I wanted to have sushi for my Christmas lunch: I searched on the Internet and saw that there were no Japanese restaurant in the South of Italy. When I want something I get it, and that was what happened.

What is the dish on your menu that represents your character most?

Black Cod with Fois Gras. It is a dish that requires a long preparation, as well as calm and attention, you need to wait for it. It reflects my character: I am basically calm, and I need to stop sometimes to understand the direction I am going.

If Capri was a dish, how would it taste?

Like dark chocolate. Capri is like the good mood and the joy you can breathe there. During Winter months I never go to Capri and I usually eat a lot of chocolate.

What will never characterize the cuisine of Kukai and what will always be part of it?

It will always be open to the new. I like experimentation and I don’t want to have limits. Total commitment and care in the preparation of dishes will always have a crucial importance. I am a fanatic about perfection and I look at every detail in order to always achieve better results.

The perfect lunch?

With the right partner, looking at her in the eyes.

Come nasce l’idea di Kukai?

Kukai è stato il mio regalo di Natale. Volevo fare il pranzo natalizio a base di sushi, ho fatto una ricerca su internet e mi sono accorto che in tutto il sud Italia non esistevano ristoranti giapponesi. Ma quando voglio una cosa me la prendo e così è stato.

Quale piatto del tuo menù ti rispecchia maggiormente?

Black cod al fois gras. É un piatto che necessita del suo tempo, richiede calma e attenzione, ti costringe a fermarti. Io sono così, tendenzialmente calmo, ho bisogno dei miei momenti di fermezza per capire dove sto andando.

Se Capri si potesse mangiare che sapore avrebbe?

Cioccolato fondente. Capri è il buonumore, la spensieratezza, l’aria di gioia che si respira. In inverno non vado a Capri e mangio un sacco di cioccolata.

Cosa non entrerà mai nella cucina di Kukai e cosa non può mancare mai?

Entrerà sempre tutto. Sono per la sperimentazione e non voglio avere limiti. Non mancherà mai la dedizione e la cura con cui vengono preparati i piatti. Sono un po’ maniaco della perfezione e non trascuro mai alcun dettaglio, cercando continuamente di migliorarmi.

Il tuo pranzo ideale?

Con la persona giusta da guardare negli occhi.

What is the ADHD syndrome?

The Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder affects children with problems of attention in scholastic and extrascholastic activities.

How do you explain this lack of attention, this hyperactivity?

Behavioral and emotional disorders can be emphasized in particular family situations. Every symptom must be contextualized looking at the event that has been the cause for it. Problems at work for a parent, the change of residence or the arrival of another baby can cause a lack of parental attention and children’s behavior can reflect their discomfort.

What role does school play?

School is very important for a prompt acknowledgment and warning of the child’s emotional and learning problems.

Disorders often appear at the beginning of the primary school with children showing learning and attention problems or aggressive behaviors.

How can parents help their children?

It is important they understand what their child wants to communicate to them through their behaviors. When unexpected or destabilizing events occur, it can help to explain them to the child, clarifying what is actually happening.

Che cos’è la sindrome ADHD? L’Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Deficit dell’Attenzione e Disturbo di Iperattività, indica una sindrome che coinvolge bambini con difficoltà a mantenere l’attenzione nelle attività di gioco e in quelle scolastiche.

Come si spiega questa disattenzione, questa iperattività?

I comportamenti e gli stati emotivi possono accentuarsi in situazioni familiari particolari. Il sintomo va contestualizzato all’interno di un evento. Un problema di lavoro di un genitore, un cambio di casa o la nascita di un fratellino possono far diminuire l’attenzione dei genitori sul bambino e lui può manifestare un disagio attraverso questi comportamenti.

Il ruolo della scuola? È estremamente importante nella tempestiva individuazione e segnalazione delle difficoltà emotive e cognitive. Spesso il disagio compare con l’inizio della scuola elementare e si manifesta con difficoltà di concentrazione, di apprendimento o con comportamenti aggressivi.

Come aiutare i propri figli?

Per i genitori è importante cercare di comprendere ciò che il proprio figlio vuole comunicare attraverso il loro comportamento. In presenza di eventi imprevisti o destabilizzanti all’interno della famiglia può esser utile spiegare loro e dare voce a quanto stia accadendo.

How did you get the idea to set your first novel in Capri?

Even though I have chose to become a physician, my interest in writing has never waned. I knew I would have ended to write a book, as I knew I would have set it in Capri.

When did you have the inspiration for the story?

I was taking a walk through the island, when I happened to see a semi-abandoned villa. It really fascinated me, so I decided it that it would have been the first source of inspiration for my story. An actor that was famous during the Sixties has given me the inspiration for a charming male protagonist, while the books edited by La Conchiglia has helped me for the setting.

What do you expect from “La seconda estate?”

I hope it would catch the attention of the greatest number possible of readers, leaving something to them and making them dream.

What is sure is that this book makes you desire to come back to Capri, or, if you still don’t know it, to discover this island.

Are there places or people in Capri you feel particularly attached to that you have cited in your novel?

I have described the Capri of the early Sixties, the one that saw Gracie Fields still the queen of La Canzone del Mare complex, and the evenings were animated by the the music played by Peppino di Capri and his Rockers.

Come è nata l’idea di ambientare a Capri il suo primo romanzo?

Nonostante io abbia scelto di fare il medico la mia passione per la scrittura è rimasta sempre viva. Sapevo che prima o poi avrei scritto un romanzo, e sapevo anche che l’avrei ambientato a Capri.

Quando la sua storia ha visto la luce?

Durante una passeggiata sull’isola, mi sono imbattuta in una villa in stato di semi abbandono. Mi ha affascinato molto e ho deciso che sarebbe stato il primo spunto per la mia storia. Un attore, celebre negli anni ‘60, mi ha ispirato un affascinante protagonista maschile. I libri delle edizioni La Conchiglia mi hanno aiutato molto per l’ambientazione.

Cosa si aspetta da “La seconda estate”?

Spero che possa appassionare quanti più lettori possibile, che possa trasmettere loro qualcosa, farli sognare. Quel che è certo è che leggerlo fa venire una gran voglia di tornare a Capri, o, per chi non la conosce ancora, di scoprirla.

Ci sono luoghi e personaggi dell’isola a cui è legata e che ha citato nel tuo libro?

Ho descritto la Capri d’oro dei primi anni ’60, quella in cui Gracie Fields era ancora la regina della Canzone del Mare, e le serate erano animate dalla musica di Peppino di Capri e dei suoi Rockers.

He won the Academy Award for Adaptation and wowed the audience with his stunning performance in American Beauty as a strict and desperate father. He recently worked side by side with Meryl Streep in The secrets of Osage County, the film that was premiered in Europe at the Capri Hollywood Festival, founded by Pascal Vicedomini, of which Chris was one of the special guests.

Chris, you have been given the Legend Award at the Capri Festival. What does this award and this festival mean to you?

It’s a bit like going back home. My wife, Marianne Leone is the daughter of Italian immigrants from Campania and Lucania, Italy has always been a mythical, dream place, full of warmth. I had been to Italy before, to shoot a film, My House in Umbria, a made-for-television movie directed by Richard Loncraine in 2003. We shot in San Casciano dei Bagni and in Florence with Maggie Smith. The story is that of a train bombing: Maggie invites the survivors of the disaster to stay at her villa. I play the role of the father of a young girl who survived the terrorist attack. But, above all, I remember how hot it was. I immediately realized why the Italians take a siesta after lunch: we were heated up nearly to the point of melting! (he laughs).

You rose to fame relatively late in your career, with American Beauty. Why? I worked for fifteen years as a stage actor before ever setting foot on a movie set. I was thirty-five years old when I played in my first film. My wife encouraged me to take up big screen acting and I’m very grateful to her for this. You know why I made up my mind? Because stage actors travel all the time, they are always thinking about the next show. I had a young child at home, I wanted and had to take care of him. I didn’t want to travel from one city to the next and have no time for

Chris, Capri le conferisce il Legend Award. Che significato hanno, per lei, questo premio e questo festival?

In molti sensi, un ritorno a casa. Mia moglie, Marianne Leone, è figlia di immigrati della Campania e della Lucania, l’Italia è sempre stata un luogo mitico, di sogno, di calore umano. Ho fatto quindici anni di teatro prima di mettere piede su un set cinematografico. Avevo trentacinque anni, quando ho visto battere il primo ciak. E’ stata mia moglie a spingermi verso il cinema, e la ringrazio ancora. Vuole sapere perché mi sono deciso? Perché con il teatro sei sempre in giro, sei sempre a pensare alla prossima data. E io avevo mio figlio, a casa, volevo e dovevo pensare a lui. Non volevo girare da una città all’altra e sottrarre tempo alla mia famiglia. Non volevo vivere per il teatro.

E ancora oggi, ha scelto di non “vivere per” il cinema. Vive lontano da Los Angeles…

Smetto quando voglio. This year’s best Italian comedy by Sydney Sibilia Smetto quando voglio.

La commedia italiana dell’anno firmata da Sydney Sibilia The world of temporary employees described with sense of humour and brilliant cinematographic references. Smetto quando voglio, this year’s revelation film, is Sydney Sibilia’s first movie as film director. Born in 1981 in Salerno, the young film director lives and works in Rome where he made a name for himself thanks to several successful short films.

Sydney Sibilia and cinema: when did you fall in love?

As a child by watching films: at that age you realize what language you are more comfortable with. In my case, it was American cinema of the late eighties/early nineties, films such as Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Tim Burton’s Batman, Stargate, Dances with Wolves.

How did you get to the making of Smetto quando voglio?

I read an article about two garbage collectors who had a degree in philosophy and I pictured them working for Ama (Rome’s street cleaning service) while discussing Kant’s Critique of Pure Reason. That is how I got the idea.

What is the secret behind all this success?

Laughter. I wanted to entertain and make the audience have fun with this film. Of course, I’m very pleased that the film has also been well received by critics.

The film has been very much promoted on social media platforms.

How powerful is the Web today?

Increasingly powerful. The promotional campaign was driven by budget reasons, but it was very amusing and reached out to a wide audience. We made a parody of Nymphomaniac by Lars von Trier, shortly before the film was released, which was unexpectedly successful.

Your greatest satisfaction so far?

One evening I was walking home, in the Trastevere area, and I overheard two boys quoting one of the film’s lines and laughing to tears…I was so incredibly touched!

How much have your origins influenced your personality?

They provided me with a different point of view. Every time I go home, I notice the differences as compared to Rome, which is a world of filmmakers, and I feel I am being constantly enriched….I hope I will never lose this power.

Come sei arrivato a Smetto quando voglio?

Lessi un articolo riguardo due netturbini, laureti in filosofia, e li immaginai mentre lavoravano per la Ama (società di pulizia stradale di Roma, ndr) discutendo della Critica della Ragion Pura di Kant…da lì è nata l’idea.

Qual è il segreto di tutto questo successo?

La risata. Con questo film volevo far divertire, intrattenere. Poi sono felice, chiaramente, che la critica ci abbia visto altro.

Il film ha avuto una grande campagna promozionale sui social media.

Quanto conta oggi il potere del web?

Sempre di più. La campagna promozionale è nata per esigenza di budget, ma ci ha divertito molto e ha raggiunto una grande parte di pubblico. Abbiamo fatto una parodia di Nymphomaniac di Lars von Trier, poco prima che uscisse il film nelle sale, che ha avuto un successo inaspettato.

La soddisfazione più grande fino ad oggi?

Una sera stavo tornando a casa, nel quartiere di Trastevere, e ho sentito due ragazzi citare una frase del film ridendo come matti…è stata un’emozione grandissima!

Nato a Salerno, quanto e in cosa le tue origini hanno influenzato la tua personalità?

Mi hanno offerto un punto di vista diverso. Ogni volta che ho il piacere di tornare a casa percepisco le differenze, rispetto a Roma che è un mondo di addetti del settore, ho un ritorno maggiore. E mi arricchisco sempre un po’ di più…spero di non perdere mai questa capacità.

I began dreaming as a child, inspired by the love of my mother and her infinite elegance. I remember going shopping with her at her favorite boutiques. I remember the sweet smell, the shop windows shining with beautiful things, with luxury garments to which I felt so attracted. She tried them on and at every change of clothes she asked me: “Francesco, do you like it?”. I felt something growing inside, the passion for beauty and women and I thought that one day I would have designed clothes that would have been showcased in those windows.

I would have never believed I could attract the attention of such popular women. Madonna has been my childhood idol since the age of eight, I had her poster hanging in my room. She was my dream back then. I was so inspired by her music, by her commitment to social activism.

When I embarked on my career as a fashion designer, I dreamt of dressing her up, until 2008, when someone called me at dead of night. It was a friend from New York City, a joker, who told me to check my e-mails and keep calm.

Nasce quando ero molto piccolo, dall’amore che da sempre nutro nei confronti di mia mamma e della sua infinita eleganza. Ricordo con affetto che mi portava sempre con sé quando andava a comprare i suoi vestiti. In me è ancora vivo, presente, il profumo di quelle boutique, le vetrine allestite in modo esclusivo, con capi di lusso che già sentivo appartenermi. Indossava le sue selezioni e poi si avvicinava chiedendomi: “Francesco ti piace?”

Avvertivo nascere qualcosa, un amore per il bello e per le donne e pensavo che un giorno avrei disegnato degli abiti da esporre in quelle vetrine.

Quel bimbo poi è cresciuto.

Madonna è stata l’idolo della mia infanzia, da quando avevo 8 anni e ho affisso alla parete della mia camera un suo poster. Allora pensai che il mio sogno sarebbe stato lei. Quando ho intrapreso questo percorso sognavo di vestirla, fino a quando nel 2008 ricevo una chiamata in piena notte. Un amico di New York, che è solito fare scherzi, insisteva nel dirmi di aprire la mia email e di stare calmo. I saw Madonna on the preview of Elle America wearing a shirt of mine. I couldn’t believe it. I had no idea how it had happened. I was feverish with excitement, I was moved to tears.

Then what happened?

I had the chance to meet her and the honor of dressing her on other occasions, such as the Oscar night. I couldn’t stop thinking: “Out of all the fashion designers, why me?” Then came all the other celebrities, one after the other. Lady Gaga, with whom I had a long and special working relationship, Rihanna, Lana del Rey, Jennifer Lopez. Last but not least, Nicole Kidman, who had me design a gown for her for her first appearance at the Cannes Film Festival a few months ago.

What is your ideal of elegance?

Elegance is a way of being, a lifestyle. It means being self-confident when you wear something that gives you strength. I enjoy making romantic clothes for women, but with a very rock and contemporary soul.

Do your Neapolitan origins influence your creations? Do they bring added value to your creativity?

Naples is deeply rooted in my heart, when I think of it I shiver with joy. It is so beautiful to be still moved by one’s homeland after 39 years. It gave me so much.

I was born in Pompeii and I lived there for 27 years. I studied in Naples and I crossed the Forcella area every morning to reach my fashion school in Via Duomo.

I took in the city’s sensuality, I could smell its beauty. Naples is my soul and my ongoing source of inspiration. No other city could ever give me more. With all its contradictions, with all its good and bad sides, Naples is love.

What is the secret to finding new garments in an increasingly global world?

There is no secret. My advice in order to be always contemporary and elegant is to wear something that lets your personality shine through.

What does it mean when designers go back to the fashion of the past? Have they run out of ideas and need to browse through the archives?

The past is like a formal structure providing volume, proportions and styles, through a photograph

by Newton or the memory of an incredibly elegant suit, masterfully cut by the genius Yves Saint Laurent. The day I will run out of creativity, you will find me selling fish at Mergellina, which wouldn’t be that bad at all.

Capri, your relationship with and vision of the island?

Capri is my secret hideaway. It is a place that I enjoy in the most intimate and natural way possible.

I enjoy walking barefoot, delving into the memories of Capri’s glorious past, described through images which have made this island the gem of the Mediterranean sea.

What is in and what is out in Capri?

Capri is only in, also because I am in no way familiar with the out!

What is your ideal day on the island?

I wake up, I have my cappuccino in the piazzetta, wait for my friends and go together to the port, get my boat and sail the blue sea thinking about my future, about what I will do when I’m grown up.

And what are you planning to do when you’re grown up?

After the age of 50, my dream is to be a film director, to tell proudly about my homeland and all the beautiful things I have seen and enjoyed so far. And I plan to be and feel very much alive in the company of the people I love.

This is true luxury to me.

Lady Gaga con cui ho avuto una lunga e speciale collaborazione, Rihanna, Lana del Rey, Jennifer Lopez.

Ultima, ma non certo per importanza, Nicole Kidman, che ha deciso di farsi disegnare un abito in esclusiva per arrivare alla sua prima apparizione all’ultimo Festival di Cannes qualche mese fa.

Il suo ideale di eleganza?

L’eleganza è un modo di essere, uno stile di vita. È sentirsi sicuri indossando qualcosa che ti dà la forza. Amo vestire le donne in maniera romantica, ma sempre con un’anima molto rock e contemporanea.

Le sue origini partenopee influenzano le sue creazioni?

Danno valore aggiunto alla sua creatività?

Napoli è nel mio cuore. È bellissimo dopo 39 anni emozionarsi ancora per la propria terra. Mi ha dato tanto. Sono nato a Pompei e ho vissuto lì per 27 anni. Studiavo a Napoli e camminavo la mattina attraverso Forcella per arrivare alla mia Accademia in via Duomo. Respiravo la carnalità della città, sentivo il profumo della sua bellezza. Con le sue contraddizioni, i suoi lati belli e quelli meno belli, Napoli è amore.

Qual’é il segreto per trovare nuovi capi da indossare in un mondo sempre più globale?

Non credo ci sia alcun segreto.

Indossare qualcosa che dia la possibilità alla propria personalità di far uscire la vera identità. È un consiglio per essere sempre contemporanei e eleganti.

Quando si ritorna alle mode del passato cosa significa? Gli stilisti finiscono le idee e guardano in archivio?

Il passato è come una struttura formale dalla quale tirare fuori dei volumi, delle proporzioni o dei sapori estetici, trasmessi da una fotografia di Newton piuttosto che da un lontano e incredibile ricordo di eleganza di un eccellente tailleur, magistralmente tagliato dal genio di Yves Saint Laurent. Il giorno che esaurirò la creatività mi troverete a Mergellina a vendere branzini, e non sarebbe per niente male.

Capri, il suo rapporto e la sua visione dell’isola?

L’isola di Capri è il mio rifugio segreto. È il posto che vivo nella maniera più intima e nella più totale naturalezza. Amo camminare scalzo, vivere il ricordo di anni meravigliosi raccontati da immagini che hanno fatto di quest’isola il vero gioiello del Mediterraneo.

Cosa è in e cosa è out a Capri?

Capri è solo in, anche perché qualsiasi cosa sia out non la frequento!

La tua giornata ideale quando sei sull’isola?

Alzarmi al mattino, bere il mio cappuccino in piazzetta, aspettare gli amici per scendere al porto, prendere il mio gozzo e attraversare il blu pensando al mio futuro, a cosa farò quando sarò grande.

Cosa farà quando sarà grande?

Dopo i 50 anni il mio sogno è di fare il regista, orgoglioso di raccontare l’anima della mia terra e tutto quello che di bello ho visto e vissuto. E vorrò ancora vivere e sentirmi vivo con le persone a cui tengo. Questo è il vero lusso.

An unrepeatable time for Capri.

A book published by La Conchiglia describes it Un periodo irripetibile per Capri.

Un libro edito da La Conchiglia li racconta The fifties were the golden age for Capri. You could really say that that period of vitality, joie de vivre and love of excess, that in Italy would take the name “dolce vita” and would characterize an unforgettable moment in the history of our country, was born on the tiny island long before that, at the end of the Second World War actually.

The war had just ended, the world was still licking its wounds and half of Italy was reduced to rubble. The first waves of revellers were already crowding onto Capri, eager to forget the horrors of war and longing to dull their senses with entertainment, heedless of differences in age, sex, money and political thought. This book reconstructs that unique time through the testimonies of those who lived it, the newspaper reports of the time, the archive documents, memoirs and photographs of that time. Page after page recounts the extravagances of international high society, of industrial leaders at play, the excesses of the daredevil nobility, the beauty of cover girls, the Hollywood stars, entertainment of the fashionable intellectuals and the frivolity of the most serious politicians, giving us the image of a special world caught in a carefree and enjoyable moment. It was a world made up of the elite, leading figures in every field and from every country, where such distinguished personalities as Togliatti, the powerful secretary of the Communist Party, took walks with Nilde Jotti and his magic circle. There was King Farouk of Egypt, a regular visitor to the island even after his abdication. And Graham Greene who always sat at the same table in his favourite restaurant.

There was the industrialist Gazzoni, who drove around in a sedan while Edda Mussolini Ciano had an aperitif every evening in the Piazzetta a few tables away from General Pietro Badoglio and the mobster Lucky Luciano, protected by his henchmen. There was Palma Bucarelli, the legendary director of the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Moderna, holding court surrounded by her admirers, the most important journalists of the time, while the actress Rita Hayworth, the “atomic bomb”, walked the narrow streets of Capri followed by an adoring crowd. And Aristotle Onassis striding into the town centre with his wife Tina and Maria Callas, who he was mad about. Giovanni Gastel. A great photographer. A special exhibition in Capri Un grande fotografo. A Capri una mostra inedita

man. With an early passion for the theatre and poetry, he soon developed an interest in photography as a hobby and a job. The eighties, thanks to the encounter with Flavio Lucchini and Gisella Borioli, publisher and editor-in-chief of Mondo Uomo e Donna, marked the height of his popularity: he became the most sought-after photographer by fashion magazines. And Gastel had already developed his signature style.

He is a self-taught man, he has never worked as assistant photographer nor has he attended a photography school. He is an “old school” photographer, he uses a large polaroid camera, a rare optical bench, his source

How did you develop the passion for photography?

For the love of a woman.

Today’s photography: analog or digital?

Photography is in its early stage of life. Analog photography is mere archaeology by now.

What photographer do you consider to be your mentor?

Irving Penn.

An extraordinary impression. When I photographed Caprese people’s faces, I realized that they could have been born only on this spectacular island.

What do you like in a face?

The incredible uniqueness of every human being.

When is creativity simply too much?

Never. Creativity is endless, the only thing that can stop it from happening is the fear of losing it.

What three adjectives describe a fascinating photograph?

Che sensazione ha avuto di Capri e della sua gente?

Un’impressione straordinaria. Fotografando i volti dei capresi ho capito che potevano essere nati solo su questo spettacolare scoglio.

Cosa le piace di un volto?

E quel giorno furono viste dodici aquile volare sulla culla e una portava nel becco uno scudo d’oro con la scritta Res Publica… (come per la nascita di Augusto).

Il vero lusso è …amare il proprio lavoro.

Katriona Munthe talks about her grandfather Axel and her memories in Capri Racconta il nonno Axel e i suoi ricordi a Capri “Timberio has a cataract in one eye, but with the other he goes through life with unperturbed calm. The Pagano family of dogs was always the first on Capri and now, since one of their masters has become mayor, they are even more locked in that reserved attitude that they have always had toward the lower classes.” This fragment is taken from I cani di Capri (Dogs of Capri), one of the stories from Uomini e Bestie (Men and Beasts) by Axel Munthe, recently reprinted

by La Conchiglia with a wonderful introduction by his granddaughter Katriona Munthe. We asked her about her memories in Capri and to talk about her grandfather, starting with this text with many levels of interpretation, from purely descriptive to more psychological.

What is your grandfather’s message in this text?

Often our pets represent (as do our children as well) the screen on which we project our desires, our vision of the world. They come to embody a hope, an ideal behaviour to emulate.

In this case the dogs, in their instinctive authenticity, are considered by my grandfather to be infinitely nobler, infinitely superior to humans also because they cannot pretend. The admiration for certain qualities such as the

unperturbed calm of Timberio (friends called my grandfather himself “Tiberius” because of his uncompromising and imperious side) was a difficult attitude to achieve!

This spiritual development was possible only through pain and impairment of vision, the very cataract from which the author was also suffering. Schopenhauer’s philosophy and Leopardi’s vision were reflected behind these words. The analogy as a linguistic form lets us use humour and with a hint, a light touch, say what even then would not have been considered to be politically correct!

Your childhood memories of your grandfather Axel?

I grew up for the first 13 years of my life in the houses that my grandfather had built in Capri, Sweden, and Rome. My grandmother Hilda was a member of the family. My father continued to live as if his father were still there too. I had a deep longing. Axel conditioned everything: the house had to be kept in semi-darkness because “the light hurt his eyes.” The way the antique furniture was arranged - all chosen by my grandfather and grandmother - in every room could only be done according to the rules laid down by him. A lei abbiamo chiesto i suoi ricordi a Capri e di parlarci della figura di suoi nonno proprio partendo da questo testo con tanti livelli di lettura, da quello puramente descrittivo a uno più psicologico.

Qual è il messaggio di suo nonno in questo testo ?

Spesso i nostri animali rappresentano (come d’altronde anche i nostri figli) lo schermo sul quale noi proiettiamo i nostri desideri, una nostra visione del mondo, vengono ad incarnare un auspicio, un comportamento ideale da emulare…

In questo caso i cani, nella loro autenticità istintiva, sono considerati dal nonno infinitamente più nobili, superiori agli esseri umani anche perché non sanno fin-

gere. L’ammirazione per certe qualità come l’impassibile calma di Timberio (gli amici chiamavano il nonno stesso “Tiberio” per il suo lato intransigente ed imperioso) era un atteggiamento difficile da raggiungere! Era uno sviluppo spirituale possibile solo attraverso il dolore e la menomazione della vista, appunto la cataratta di cui anche l’autore soffriva. Traspare la filosofia di Schopenhauer e la visione di Leopardi dietro queste parole. L’analogia come forma linguistica, ci consente di utilizzare lo spirito umoristico e con un accenno, un tocco leggero, dire ciò che anche allora non sarebbe stato considerato politicamente corretto!

I ricordi di bambina di suo nonno Axel?

Sono cresciuta per i primi 13 anni della mia vita nelle case che mio nonno aveva costruito a Capri, in Svezia, a Roma….

Mia nonna Hilda faceva parte della famiglia, mio padre continuava a vivere come se suo padre fosse anche lui ancora presente...ne aveva una profonda nostalgia! Axel condizionava tutto: l’ambiente doveva essere tenuta in semi oscurità perché “la luce faceva male agli occhi”. Il modo di distribuire i mobili antichi - tutti scelti dal nonno e dalla nonna - in ogni stanza poteva solo essere fatto secondo i canoni da lui stabiliti. Villa San Michele and Capri. You spent your holidays there?

At the time of my birth in London, my brothers were with my father at the Tower of Materita inhabited by my grandfather in the last years of his life. We all played a lot in the gardens of Villa San Michele, exploring the medicinal herbs that were grown there.... But we didn’t go to Villa San Michele very often because it had already become a tourist attraction.

Lei è diventata medico come suo nonno: qual è stato il più grande insegnamento che le ha trasmesso della sua professione?

Dopo molti anni solamente, quando ho iniziato a intervenire come psicoanalista alle Cure Palliative dell’Ospedale di Grosseto, ho capito che avevo ereditato il suo essere affascinato con la morte: una grandissima maestra della vita, maestra della filosofia, guida e consigliera nel quotidiano esistere. “…fu medico dell’anima quanto del corpo: si dice che

rapporto con le proprie emozioni, il proprio dolore, finche’ non lo si vive in prima persona insieme al proprio paziente e ci si apre all’esperienza di essere “un guaritore ferito”, uno sciamano, rimaniamo coatti, ristretti, rinchiusi all’interno della rocca forte delle nostre teorie.

Credo in questo senso che il nonno Axel rimane oggi , un’ispirazione, una guida da seguire, un esempio di come poter diventare terapeuti nel senso pieno della parola. Che richiede in realtà il coraggio di esperire, di praticare anche la dimensione spirituale dell’arte antichissima che era di Asklepios !

Franco Senesi, his galleries and the art system Le sue gallerie e il sistema dell’arte In Capri, White Room is synonymous with contemporary art. The gallery is part of a larger project, the Liquid Art System, which also involves the Square Gallery in Positano and the experimental workshop Studio Lab. The common denominator and creator of the project is Franco Senesi, whose story about entrepreneurship and insight is a fascinating one. On the eve of the new exhibition of works by Marco Grassi in Capri, we asked the gallery owner to talk about his true passion, art.

This summer, your gallery on Capri is collaborating with two very interesting outside projects, the Settimana Futurista (Futurist Week) and the project Capri Clou. Can you tell us about them?

Futurist Week arose from a collaboration with the curator of the Massimiliano Finazzer Flory event. It was a chance to exhibit work like that of Paolo Grassino which, despite its modern materials clearly cites “Forme uniche della continuita’ dello spazio (Unique shapes of the continuity of space)” by Boccioni. The work is on display in Capri at the Studio Lab. The project Capri Clou, on the other hand, is the result of a collaboration with Federico Guiscard who has just opened the art garden in Anacapri, a very nice space in 110 Capri | The Divine Coast

the heart of the historic centre where I was able to exhibit large sculptures by Luigi Galligani and Sergio Rubini.

An important event this summer will be the exhibition of photographs for charity signed by Guy Laliberté, founder of the Cirque du Soleil. How did this collaboration come about?

The meeting with Guy Laliberté took place in my galleries in Positano.

Since our meeting, Guy has become one of our most devoted collectors and one of the first works he acquired was a sculpture by Giacinto Bosco which represents the possibility of capturing the moon. This was the inspiration for telling the story of his journey into space through images. The photos taken will be exhibited in Capri in the White Room from August 1 to August 18. Guy Laliberté will also be at the inauguration.

Again in August in Capri, Tim Okamura and Jérôme Lagarrigue will be exhibiting in the gallery space we call the Studio Lab, a venue dedicated to the exhibition of artistic experiments to verify the effects on the public of works that come to Capri for the first time. Of all the artists in the creative American group in Brooklyn (visual artists, photographers and video-makers), Okamura

La galleria fa parte di un progetto più ampio, il Liquid Art System, che coinvolge anche la Square Gallery di Positano e il laboratorio dedicato alla sperimentazione Studio Lab. Comune denominatore e ideatore del progetto Franco Senesi, protagonista di un’affascinante storia di brillante imprenditoria e intuizioni. Alla vigilia della nuova mostra dedicata all’artista Marco Grassi alla galleria di Capri, abbiamo chiesto al gallerista di parlarci della sua vera passione, l’arte.

Quest’estate la sua galleria di Capri è impegnata con due collaborazioni esterne molto interessanti, la Settimana Futurista e il progetto Capri Clou. Ce li racconta?

La Settimana Futurista è nata dalla collaborazione con il curatore della manifestazione Massimiliano Finazzer Flory , è stata una occasione per poter esporre un’opera come quella di Paolo Grassino che, pur nella sua modernita’ di materiali e cita chiaramente “Forme uniche della continuita’ dello spazio” di Boccioni.

L’opera è in esposizione a Capri allo Studio Lab. Il progetto Capri Clou nasce invece dalla collaborazione con Federico Guiscardo che ha appena inaugurato il giardino dell’arte ad Anacapri, spazio molto bello nel cuore del centro storico, dove ho potuto

Un momento importante di quest’estate sarà la mostra con finalità benefiche delle fotografie firmate Guy Lalibertè, fondatore del Cirque du Soleil. Come è nata questa collaborazione?

L’incontro con Guy Laliberté è nato nelle mie gallerie di Positano.

Dal nostro incontro, Guy è diventato un nostro collezionista affezionato e tra le prime opere ha acquisito una scultura di Giacinto Bosco che rappresenta la possibilita’ di catturare la luna. Questo è stato lo spunto per cominciare a raccontare attraverso le immagini il suo viaggio nello spazio. Le foto che ha realizzato verranno esposte a Capri alla White Room dal 1 agosto al 18 agosto. All’inaugurazione sara’ presente anche Guy Lalibertè.

Sempre ad agosto a Capri presentera’ Tim Okamura e Jérôme Lagarrigue…

Si nello spazio della galleria che chiamiamo Studio Lab, luogo dedicato all›esibizione di esperimenti artistici per verificarne gli effetti sul pubblico di opere che arrivano a Capri per la prima volta. Okamura e Lagarrigue sono gli artisti che in questo momento raccolgono in America la maggior attenzione nel gruppo dei creativi di Brooklyn (artisti visivi, fotografi e video-makers).

A painting of the artist Roberto Ferri and another image of the White Room gallery in Capri and Lagarrigue are receiving most of the attention at this moment.

What are the most important fairs and most interesting markets for your galleries?

During the winter and spring I’m involved in international fairs. For Contemporary Art, Miami is currently the most interesting market in America, while Istanbul is establishing itself as an emerging market by virtue of its position as a crossroads between East, West and the Arab World. Next winter, we will also be doing an experiment with the Eastern market in Singapore.

How do you go about looking for the new artists to exhibit in your venues?

We have a “statement” our curator uses to select the artists. He then shares them with me. His focus is on all those artists who know how to bring innovation - projecting into the future - to tra112 Capri | The Divine Coast

ditional expressive methods and/or techniques from their places of origin or activity.

What is your personal recipe for success?

The economic and cultural affirmation of countries once considered to be developing countries led to the crisis in the traditional concept of the art gallery, linked to the alleged superiority of the economy and culture of Western countries. There is a need to design a new concept of gallery that adapts to this new global market, but also knows how to focus on all the local situations and demands that deserve attention.

Future projects and the artist you would like to have but don’t have yet?

We are working to open Liquid spaces outside of Campania and in the international arena and would love to have a Chilean artist with us... I won’t mention the name because I don’t want to jinx it.

Quali sono le fiere di rifermenti e i mercati più interessanti per le sue gallerie?

Durante l’inverno e la primavera sono impegnato nella partecipazione a Fiere Internazionali. Per l’Arte Contemporanea Miami si conferma attualmente il mercato piu’ interessante in America, mentre Istanbul si sta affermando come mercato emergente in virtu’ della sua posizione di crocevia tra Oriente, Occidente e Mondo Arabo. Il prossimo inverno in piu’ faremo anche un esperimento sul mercato Orientale di Singapore.

Come avviene la ricerca dei nuovi artisti che propone nei suoi spazi?

Abbiamo uno «statement» in base al quale il nostro curatore seleziona gli artisti e li condivide con me. La sua attenzione è rivolta a tutti quegli artisti che sappiano innovare - e proiettare verso il futuro modalità e/o tecniche espres-

sive tradizionali dei propri luoghi di origine o di attività.

Qual è la sua personale ricetta del successo?

L’affermazione economica e culturale di paesi considerati un tempo in via di sviluppo ha condotto alla crisi del concetto tradizionale di galleria d’arte, legato alla presunta superiorità dell’economia e della cultura dei paesi occidentali. È necessario concepire un nuovo concetto di galleria che si adatti a questo nuovo mercato globale, ma che sappia anche prestare attenzione a tutte le istanze di natura locale che meritino di essere messe in evidenza.

Progetti futuri e l’artista che vorrebbe e non è riuscito ad avere ancora?

Stiamo lavorando per aprire spazi Liquid al di fuori del contesto campano ed in ambito internazionale e mi piacerebbe avere con noi un artista cileno...di cui non faccio il nome per scaramanzia.

The island’s secret soul L’anima segreta dell’isola text Francesca Lombardi

Ausilia Veneruso and La Conchiglia bookstore and publishing house tell the story of Capri Ausilia Veneruso e la libreria e casa editrice La Conchiglia raccontano Capri Capri is different from any other place in the world. But don’t expect to discover the soul of the place over the weekend, with a swim at the Faraglioni and a drink in the Piazzetta. At the most it will let you see its glamorous side, unchanged for over a century. Only a few have been able to discover Capri’s soul, its intellectual, deep soul that goes beyond convention. One of these lucky guardians is Ausilia Veneruso who is, with her husband Riccardo Esposito, the brains behind La Conchiglia, bookstore and publishing house. We asked her to tell her story, and thanks to her and the work of La Conchiglia, we caught a glimpse of the soul of this place, where even the most audacious of avant-garde figures were always elegant and light.

Can you tell me about this cultural adventure which is intertwined with the story of your life?

We started in 1981 in Via Parroco Canale, on an alley off Via Le Botteghe. It was a very small space, 13sqm, but it already had a collection of all our passions: books and exhibitions of paintings at first. From the beginning, Riccardo and shared an idea: Capri is the place of words, written but also painted and sung... and the union of art and books for us has always been inseparable: in 1981 we opened with an exhibition by Raffaelle Castello, a great artist from Capri who had trained in Europe, a friend of Paul Klee and Mondrian. At a certain point in his life he decided to return to Capri. It was a success and immediately made us a cultural landmark of the island. We held painting and photography exhibitions; we collected signatures to prevent the historical sites of the island from being transformed.

A few years later we moved to a bigger and more visible place, the historic shop in Via Le Botteghe that we still have: 40sqm, but to us it seemed like La Rinascente!

This year we’ve returned to the Piazzetta, to the entrance of Capri’s oldest but also most important point of communication with the outside. What meaning does this place have, at the level of thought as well?

In April, we left Via Cammerelle for Acquaviva. For those arriving from the funicular, it’s the first place you see when entering the

Uno di questi fortunati custodi è Ausilia Veneruso, ideatrice con il marito Riccardo Esposito de La Conchiglia, libreria e casa editrice. A lei abbiamo chiesto di raccontarsi, e grazie a lei e al lavoro de La Conchiglia abbiamo intravisto l’anima di questo luogo, dove anche le avanguardie più audaci sono state sempre eleganti e leggere.

Mi racconta questa avventura culturale, che si intreccia con la storia della sua vita?

Abbiamo iniziato nel 1981 in via Parroco Canale, un vicolo su via Le Botteghe. Era uno spazio piccolissimo, 13mq, ma che raccoglieva già tutte le nostre passioni: i libri e le esposizioni di quadri prima di tutto, ma anche il nostro impegno civile: ricordo con orgoglio la raccolta di firme per Villa Lysis, più di 1500 tutte raccolte attraverso la libreria, che hanno permesso che non venisse trasformata in appartamenti o in un grande albergo.Fin dall’inizio Riccardo e io avevamo un pensiero condiviso: Capri è il luogo delle “parole”, scritte ma anche dipinte e cantate... E il connubio arte e libri per noi è sempre stato inscindibile: nell’ 81 inaugurammo con una mostra di Raffaelle Castello, un grande caprese di formazione europea, amico di Paul Klee e Mondrian, che a un certo di punto della vita decise di ritornare a Capri. Fu un successo e ci fece diventare subito un punto di riferimento culturale dell’isola. Facevamo mostre di pittura e fotografia, raccoglievamo firme per impedire che i luoghi storici dell’isola venissero trasformati. Qualche anno più tardi ci siamo trasferiti in un posto più grande e più visibile, lo storico vnegozio di via Le Botteghe che abbiamo ancora: 40mq , ma a noi sembrava “La Rinascente”!

Quest’anno siete tornati in Piazzetta, all’ingresso della Capri più antica ma anche punto importante di comunicazione verso l’esterno. Che significato assume anche a livello di pensiero questo luogo?

There we mounted a camera connected to a large screen placed in the bookshop: we let Capri come indoors, with its sunsets, summer mornings, the winter rain ...

In Via Acquaviva there are art and fashion books, limited editions, and objects with the La Conchiglia signature.

The other three galleries, the one on Via Le Botteghe, the one in Anacapri and the one in Rome have their own special soul, thanks to their collaborators. Tell us about the soul, which is different in each place?

Along with Riccardo and me, our stores are managed and organized by my son Vincenzo and a team of young people who are a great asset to La Conchiglia. The bookstore in Via Le Botteghe, which I call the parent shop, has all the books of the La Conchiglia series, the current best-sellers from the major publishing houses and also small specialized bookstores. I personally choose every book. I know my audience and what they want. The bookstore on Anacapri was opened in 2000: there is atmosphere there. Children often come in, exchange a few words with us, then sit on the floor and begin to read.

It’s a great feeling when this happens, more rewarding than any sale.

The publishing house: what sort of goal did you give yourselves and undertake with this project?

We started in 1989 at a time when production and also re-printing of books on Capri had come to a halt. From WWII until the 1970s, the intellectual ferment was alive and exciting. Then silence. We felt this huge lack and concentrated on this direction. Riccardo is a graphic designer, and my son actively participates in the publishing house business. We do everything in-house, from the translation - in which established professionals are actively involved - to the choice of iconography. The editing work has allowed us to create an archive of images without equal: we have portraits of the great intellectuals who have lived here, the Hollywood stars who chose it for their holidays or buen ritiro, all the personalities of the twentieth century. I want to clarify one thing: La Conchiglia does not do amarcord, memoir. We do not seek the faded memory of the past. Whether we choose to publish new works or reprints, the intent is always to reflect on the past that feeds the intellectual fervour that has always characterized this island.

These were the years of speculation: I remember with pride collecting signatures for Villa Lysis, more than 1,500 gathered all through the bookstore, which prevented the Villa from being turned into apartments or a large hotel.

Anche le altre tre librerie, quella a via Le Botteghe, quella ad Anacapri e quella a Roma hanno una loro anima speciale, resa tale anche grazie ai suoi collaboratori. Ci racconta questa anima?

Oltre a Riccardo e me i nostri punti vendita sono gestiti e organizzati da mio figlio Vincenzo e da un team di ragazzi che sono una grande risorsa per La Conchiglia. La libreria di via Le Botteghe, che io chiamo la casa madre, propone dai grandi successi del momento delle case editrici più importanti, ai libri in lingua, ai titoli meno conosciuti delle piccole realtà editoriali di ricerca. Scelgo personalmente ogni singolo testo, conosco il mio pubblico e so cosa vuole. La libreria di Anacapri è stata aperta nel 2000: l’atmosfera che si respira qui è davvero particolare. Spesso i bambini entrano, scambiano due battute con noi, poi si siedono in terra e cominciano a sfogliare i libri e a leggere.

La casa editrice è un altro capitolo di questa storia imprenditoriale.

Quale tipo di obiettivo avete intrapreso con questo progetto?

Abbiamo iniziato nel 1989 in un momento in cui la produzione e anche la ristampa dei testi su Capri si era rallentata. Dal dopoguerra fino agli anni ’60, infatti, il fermento intellettuale e la ricerca storica erano rimasti vivi. Poi il silenzio. Abbiamo avvertito questa mancanza importante e la nostra ricerca si è concentrata in questa direzione. Riccardo è grafico-editoriale, mio figlio partecipa attivamente al lavoro della casa editrice. Facciamo tutto internamente, dalla traduzione – a cui partecipano attivamente professionisti affermati – alla scelta iconografica. Il lavoro di editing ci ha permesso di creare un importante archivio di immagini. La casa editrice è diventata, così, il centro propulsore per tante ricerche sullo straordinario patrimonio storico e letterario della nostra isola.Ci tengo a precisare, però, una cosa: La Conchiglia non fa amarcord, non ricerchiamo il ricordo sbiadito di quello che è stato. Sia che si scelga di pubblicare testi nuovi sia nel caso di ristampe, l’intento è sempre quello di promuovere una riflessione sul nostro passato, che alimenti il fervore intellettuale che da sempre caratterizza e alimenta l’anima segreta di quest’isola.

It was opened on July 8, 1950, in Capri’s loveliest spot, just opposite the Faraglioni. With its seawater pool dropping sheer to the sea, the ultra-modern masonry cabanas with private bathroom and restaurant combining local and international cuisine, Canzone del Mare was the dream come true of a stunningly beautiful actress and singer from Lancashire, Gracie Fields. That little gem, which had been given a name recalling the song of the Sirens, soon became Mediterranean high-society’s chic and informal gathering place: King Faruk, the Shah of Persia and wife Soraya, Jackie Kennedy, Aristotele Onassis and many other prominent figures of the time. The perfect picture, to which Marchese Pucci’s boutique and the Riva motor-boat that took the guests waterskiing added strokes of light and sparkle.

Luigi Iacono was “chosen” by Gracie Fields when the British artist realized that the time had come to step down in favour of someone else: Gracie saw in Luigi the man that could follow in the wake of her myth and pursue the dream that many years before had led her to that amazing strip of coast.

Since then, what is considered to be one of the world’s most spectacular beach clubs has been run by the Iaconos, who have always lived up to Gracie’s expectations.

Today, at the head of the exclusive restaurant and beach club in Marina Piccola are Luigi’s children- Ilaria, Chiara and Mario-, always busy with parties, private events or events organized by the great international luxury brands (Jaeger-LeCoultre, Omega, Rolex), under the watchful eye of Ms. Angela, still a handsome woman with two eyes as blue as Capri’s sea.

Quel piccolo gioiello a cui Gracie aveva dato un nome che ricordava il canto delle sirene incantò fin da subito la jeunesse dorée del Mediterraneo.

And even diving into its waters is a very rewarding experience. The seabeds, lying at the foot of the rocks, represent the other side of the coin, the underwater realm known only to scuba-diving lovers.

Enrico Desiderio, born into a family of jewelers for several generations, is a passionate photographer. His passion goes well beyond the common snapshots we all take. During his underwater “walks” over the years, he has brought to the surface the lesser-known Capri, although it is before everyone’s eyes, a world filled with multicolored vegetation, with unique and unexplored sceneries, revealed only to those who dare venture into mazes of rock and pathways, underwater hollows and hidden caves.

That is how you might come across a millenary-old cave surrounded by sponges and gorgonians, at the foot of a rock on the southern-western side of the island, 40 meters deep. Inside the cave lives a colony of thousands of prawns, unaware of the privilege of living their whole life in one of the world’s most beautiful places.

The Guarracino could be described as Capri’s most common fish. The island’s waters are teeming with it and it is actually a very lucky fish. Being full of bones, it is never caught nor eaten.

And it will never know that it has given its name to a shoal, a strip of rock populated by Anthias, a red variety of this fish species. The Guaraccino shoal is known only to connoisseurs, it lies at a depth of 18 to 50 meters between Punta Massullo, the promontory on which Villa Malaparte stands, and the Monacone rock, opposite the Faraglioni, and Enrico Desiderio captures it in his unique photographs.

The Faraglioni are the world-famous stacks rising out of the water, which are also home to a rare and blue-colored subspecies of the Italian wall lizard, in addition to a variety of other animals and plants.

Nelle sue passeggiate sottomarine ha negli anni impresso e portato in superficie la Capri nascosta, ma sotto gli occhi di tutti, dove la moltitudine dei colori della superficie trova corrispondenza nella variopinta vegetazione sommersa, gli scenari unici diventano panorami inediti sotto le 3 atmosfere di pressione e gli scorci suggestivi vengono rivelati ai più audaci dopo labirinti di roccia e sentieri marini, esplodendo in cavità sommerse e grotte nascoste.

Così capita di scoprire che sull’estremità di una punta rocciosa sul versante sud-ovest dell’isola, alla profondità di oltre 40 metri, si apre da millenni un’ampia cavità contornata da spugne e gorgonie. All’interno una colonia di migliaia di gamberi vive le acque di Capri con l’inconsapevole privilegio di essere in uno dei posti più belli del mondo.

Il Guarracino è un po’ il pesce di Capri. Le sue acque ne sono ricchissime ed è un pesce fortunato. Pieno di spine non viene mai pescato ne mangiato. Non saprà mai di aver dato il nome a una secca, un lembo di roccia popolatissima di Anthias, variante di colore rosso di questa specie. La secca del Guarracino è per intenditori, si nasconde tra i 18 e i 50 metri tra Punta Massullo, il promontorio che ospita Villa Malaparte, e lo scoglio del Monacone, di fronte ai Faraglioni e Enrico Desiderio ce la rivela attraverso scatti unici.

Assertive, resolute, determined. Sometimes flexible, but always watchful and careful. There is nothing she doesn’t understand, she has everything under control. Her days start early in the mornings and are very full, you never know when they will come to an end –usually very late. When Maria D’Alessio was a child, she enjoyed her childhood in Capri, but she already dreamed of a career, and she has managed to established herself in the end. Today, nobody calls her Maria anymore: everywhere she is known as Mia di Aurora.

When did you stop to enjoy Capri?

I still enjoy Capri, every day, even only because I have the privilege to live here, but I was very young when I started to work. I have learned to know every aspect of my sector’s work: it was necessary to do my work exactly the way my family wants it to be done. The secret is to be able to do a little bit of everything.

When did everything change?

When I was 20 and I started to attend classes to enter the Sommelier world. I started to believe in wine and in its primary importance in cuisine.

What do you remember of those years?

The first steps in a family business, above all if it is consolidated and successful, are always difficult. It takes a lot of time and patience to achieve good results and a creditable and successful position. What I have learned through my experience, by traveling and opening myself to the world, has helped me in this.

Time has proved you were right?

To be able to anticipate times and trends is at the basis of our changes.

I had the support of my husband, who is the restaurant’s Chef. We share the same ideas and we have the same objectives.

Working with your family and husband..?

When Franco started to work in our family business, he already had years of experience as Chef, he had been abroad and worked with Gualtiero Marchesi for some time. When I got to know him, he had been working as Chef of Aurora for three years and I would have never thought at that moment that I would have fallen in love with him,

Come nasce il Suo nome?

Mio fratello Raffaele quando era piccolo non riusciva a pronunciare il mio nome e mi chiamava Mia. Da allora sono Mia per tutti e lo ringrazio. È più identificativo e mi ha portato fortuna.

Quando ha smesso di godersi l’isola?

L’isola me la godo ogni giorno anche solo per il privilegio di vivere qui, ma ho iniziato a lavorare molto presto. Ho imparato a conoscere ogni aspetto del mio settore ed è fondamentale per poter lavorare come la famiglia vuole. Alla base c’è il saper fare un po’ di tutto.

Quando ha avuto inizio il cambiamento?

Con i primi corsi da sommelier quando avevo 20 anni. Ho iniziato a credere nel vino e nel suo aspetto fondamentale nella ristorazione.

Inserirsi in un’attività familiare non è mai facile, per di più quando è ben consolidata, avviata e di successo. Ci vuole tempo e pazienza per affermarsi e essere credibile. Con l’esperienza maturata, viaggiando e aprendomi al mondo ho iniziato ad avere più credibilità.

Il tempo le ha dato ragione?
