Trade shows have always played a key role in the textile-clothing industry,

but they have never been in the spotlight as much as they are now, in this Showcase issue: Milano Unica makes its debut in July and the eyes of all entrepreneurs and textile experts are on it.

The market, though not fully healed yet, is basically steady or, at least, not on a permanent roller-coaster ride of ups and downs, and so we can get back to talking quality, research and innovation. This Showcase issue deals mostly with such themes and our “thank you” goes to those who invest time and resources in training and planning for the future: the trade show organizer who looks at technical fabrics as the new frontier for Italian companies; the manager who agrees with this impression and helps revive and relaunch the theme of school-university-employment relationship; the creators of a product which has gained recognitions and awards in just a few years’ time; and the experts and teachers who tell us about Italy’s textile-oriented school’s present situation.

A comprehensive view that projects us into the near future, but doesn’t sweep serious problems under the carpet, such as the lack of generational turnover in our companies or the very little appeal the textile-clothing industry has with students and their families when the time comes to choose the school they believe is best. All this despite the fact that the textile industry, as a whole, represents the second most important sector in Italy.

We will, as usual, share some gastronomic “advice” with you: where to go when you have little time for lunch or dinner breaks. Fast food, but not as you know it!

Last but not least, a few words to tell you about a very important anniversary: La Spola turns twenty this year and we want to let you know how we are going to celebrate such an amazing goal, ours and of our faithful readers over the years.

Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, The London Textile Fair, Première Vision e Filo. E prima ancora Techtextil e Texprocess a Francoforte. Le fiere mantengono il loro ruolo determinante per il tessile-abbigliamento ma mai come in occasione di questo Showcase saranno più che mai al centro dell’attenzione: Milano Unica debutta a luglio e concentrerà su di sé gli sguardi di imprenditori e addetti ai lavori.

Il mercato, pur non brillante, si è sostanzialmente stabilizzato o, quantomeno, non è più soggetto all’ottovolante che ha accompagnato tante stagioni e quindi si può tornare a parlare di qualità, ricerca, innovazione. Ed in questo numero di Showcase si parla anche e soprattutto di questo, grazie a chi investe tempo e risorse nella formazione e nella programmazione del futuro. C’è l’organizzatore di fiere che vede nel tessile tecnico una nuova frontiera anche per le aziende italiane, c’è il dirigente che conferma questa impressione e rilancia il tema del rapporto scuole-università-lavoro, ci sono le ideatrici di un prodotto che in pochi anni ha fatto incetta di complimenti e premi e ci sono gli esperti e le insegnanti che ci raccontano come sta la scuola italiana orientata al tessile. Uno sguardo a 360 gradi che ci proietta nel futuro prossimo ma che non nasconde neppure ombre preoccupanti, come la mancanza di ricambio generazionale nelle aziende o lo scarso appeal che ha il tessile-abbigliamento sugli studenti e le loro famiglie al momento di scegliere il percorso scolastico. Tutto questo nonostante la filiera, nel suo complesso, rappresenti per valore il secondo settore nell’industria italiana.

Non mancano neppure stavolta i ‘consigli’ gastronomici: per non rubare troppo tempo al lavoro abbiamo scelto qualcosa di rapida consumazione.

Ma non pensate solo al fast food!

Per finire ci prendiamo alcune righe per anticipare le celebrazioni di un importante anniversario: La Spola compie 20 anni e presto scoprirete in che modo abbiamo deciso di festeggiare questo traguardo, nostro e di chi ci segue da sempre con affetto.

Showcase usually introduces the summer season’s trade show calendar strictly in chronological order, starting with Pitti Filati. Without wishing to offend the Florentine show, this time we have no choice but to jump a few weeks ahead to July 11, the opening day of the Milano Unica show in its new location.

The debut of the Milanese fair in July, not as “Prima” anymore but as a trade show in its own right, is the biggest “news” of the year.

A well-pondered decision, which was called for, at first, by very few people and then with increasing insistence by most textile entrepreneurs. And now the distance in time that separates Milan from Paris is real. And the decision, which was not well-received at first, is currently approved of by many exhibitors, although the minority of textile entrepreneurs who produce fancy fabrics would have preferred not to have the show pushed ahead of schedule to have more time to get the collections ready to go.

Whether it’s a good or bad decision, we will know for sure only in a few months’ time, but it is a fact that the whole Italian textile sector is in a state of ferment over the new trade show schedule.

The number of exhibitors attending the Rho fair is expected to increase, and the show will no longer be openly in contrast with Première Vision, whose dates remain unchanged.

Milano Unica takes on a new look, with more focus on womenswear and on foreign buyers and visitors, although the Su Showcase siamo soliti presentare le fiere del periodo estivo seguendo un preciso ordine cronologico, che inizia solitamente con Pitti Filati e arriva fino a ben dopo le vacenza a Milano per Filo.

Non ce ne voglia la fiera fiorentina ma stavolta è obbligatorio fare un salto in avanti di un paio di settimane rispetto alla data del salone della Fortezza da Basso e andare all’11 luglio, giorno di apertura di Milano Unica nella sua nuova collocazione estiva: il debutto a luglio della fiera milanese, non più come negli anni passati con la fortunata esperienza di Prima (precollezioni) ma proprio come salone di collezioni è infatti la ‘notizia’ dell’anno.

Decisione ponderata, richiesta prima con poche voci e poi con sempre più crescente insistenza dagli imprenditori, adesso l’anticipo che distacca temporalmente Milano da Parigi è cosa reale. E la decisione, che appena fu ventilata non sembrava incontrare molti favori, è stata accettata con piacere da molti espositori, anche se rimane la minoranza di chi fa fantasia pura che avrebbe evitato questo accorciamento dei tempi per creare la collezione.

Se anticipare a luglio è stata la scelta giusta si saprà tra qualche mese ma intanto il fermento si è creato all’interno di tutto il settore tessile italiano: i numeri dei presenti a Rho dovrebbero ampliarsi e non ci sarà più la contrapposizione diretta con Première Vision, che rimane ferma alle sue date storiche.

Milano Unica riparte quindi con una veste nuova, che dovrebbe aprire di più le porte anche alla moda femminile ed ai buyers e visitatori esteri, anche se l’intreccio con le date delle sfilate e delle fiere in Cina o negli Stati Uniti è tutto da testare.

show’s new schedule overlapping with the dates of the fashion shows and trade fairs in China and in the US has yet to prove itself irrelevant.

Now let’s go back to Pitti Filati, the last trade show scheduled for June, which brings to Florence, for the 81st time, the best of Italian and international yarn producers, with a renewed layout and different distribution of spaces and many off-show events. This season’s theme is Human Edition, while the Knitclub, the area devoted to knitwear producers, grows in size. Pitti Filati welcomes a total of 132 brands, 24 of which coming from abroad (UK, Japan, Rumania, Peru, Germany, Turkey, New Zealand and South Africa). Among the new exhibitors and those coming back are the Italian Filatura Cervinia, Filatura di Crosa and Pettinatura Lagopolane.

At the same time, like last’s year summer show, the Medici pavilion hosts the 30th Vintage Selection event, but fashion is also the star of the Feel The Yarn competition and of the show by the Costume and Fashion Academy.

One more jump in time and space: from Italy to England for The London Textile Fair on July 19 and 20. An increasingly growing trade show- like its “siblings” , the home, technical and print textile shows (which will soon make their debut in the US version in New York)- which has, however, to deal with the market uncertainties due to the escalating terrorist tension.

Anyway, Islington’s Business Design Centre will welcome many of the companies attending both the Milan and Paris Riportando indietro il calendario torniamo a Pitti Filati, che chiuderà giugno portando a Firenze l’eccellenza dei produttori italiani ed internazionali per la sua edizione numero 81, che ha un layout rinnovato, con una diversa distribuzione degli spazi e tante iniziative collaterali. The Human Edition è il tema scelto per il progetto espositivo, mentre cresce in dimensioni il Knitclub, l’area riservata ai maglifici.

132 i marchi in totale a Pitti Filati, di cui 24 provenienti dall'estero (Regno Unito, Giappone, Romania, Perù, Germania, Turchia, Nuova Zelanda e Sud Africa).

Tra le novità ed i rientri ci sono le italiane Filatura Cervinia, Filatura di Crosa e Pettinatura Lagopolane.

In contemporanea, come nell’altra edizione estiva, nel padiglione Medici va in scena la 30’ edizione di Vintage Selection, solitamente ospitata alla Stazione leopolda, ma la moda entrerà dalla porta principale anche con il concorso Feel The Yarn e con la sfilata di Accademia del Costume e Moda.

Nuovo salto temporale e geografico: dall’Italia all’Inghilterra per The London Textile Fair del 19 e 20 luglio. Una fiera in continua crescita, come le ‘sorelle’ del tessile casa, tecnico e della stampa (che debutteranno anche nella versione USA a New York) ma sulla quale incombono le incertezze di mercato dovute alla crescente tensione per il terrorismo.

Al Business Design Centre di Islington si ritroveranno comunque molte delle aziende presenti sia a Milano che a Parigi e quindi questo banco di prova sarà seguito con attenzione dagli addetti ai lavori: nelle ultime edizioni la fiera londinese ha portato un buon riscontro sia in termini di affari che di contatti e la speranza è che le cause esterne non facciano abbassare richieste dei clienti e creatività dei tanti giovani stilisti 10 fairs

Il debutto a luglio della fiera milanese è la più grande ‘notizia’ dell’anno

shows, so the fair is inevitably going to attract the textile experts’ attention. In the past few seasons, the show has met with success in terms of business results and everyone hopes that external causes will not discourage customers from buying and the many young London designers from hunting for new trends.

No changes in store for Munich Fabric Start, which will be held, like the previous successful editions, in September (5-7) and adds clothing to its traditional clothing and technical textile offerings, with Munich Apparel Source. View, the preview textile fair held in Munich on July 17 and 18, for the first time will not be affected by the “closeness” of Milano Unica.

The stars of Paris’s trade show summer season are, as usual, Texworld and Première Vision Paris, two shows travelling on parallel tracks but in different directions (that is, targets).

In Le Bourget, special attention goes to the shows held at the same time as Texworld, starting with Avantex (see the interview with Michael Scherpe), whereas in Villepinte everything will proceed along the successfully beaten paths: attendance figures have proven the organizers right considering that, despite the drain of both European and Asian companies leaving, the number of exhibitors seems about the same as previous years (at the time of printing).

The trade fair season ends on September 27 and 28, with Filo at Milan’s Palazzo delle Stelline: in this case as well, the show will be held ahead of its usual date, and our impression is that we better get used to it. londinesi sempre a caccia di novità.

Nessun passo indietro nel calendario per Munich Fabric Start che, forte delle positive precedenti edizioni, resta ferma su settembre (5-7) inserendo nel pacchetto tessile per abbigliamento e tessile tecnico anche l’abbigliamento, con Munich Apparel Source. La fiera di Monaco di Baviera, che il 17 e 18 luglio mette in campo View, ovvero il salone delle precollezioni, per la prima volta non risentirà della vicinanza con Milano Unica.

L’estate parigina del tessile sarà come sempre quella di Texworld da una parte e Première Vision Paris dall’altra, due fiere che corrono su binari paralleli con destinazioni (ovvero target) diversi. Entrambe hanno un calendario 'rigido' che le pone negli stessi giorni e a poche decine di chilometri di distanza.

A Le Bourget si punta molto anche sulle fiere che si aprono in contemporanea, a iniziare da Avantex (vedi intervista a Michael Scherpe), mentre a Villepinte tutto procederà secondo sentieri già battuti con successo: i numeri sembrano dar ragione ad entrambe le organizzazioni, visto che nonostante l’emorragia di aziende sia ormai non solo europea ma anche asiatica non sembrano (al momento di andare in stampa) in calo gli espositori.

Il 27 e 28 settembre la grande giostra delle fiere farà l’ultimo giro con Filo, al Palazzo delle Stelline di Milano: anche in questo caso i tempi sono decisamente anticipati rispetto al calendario abituale ma l’impressione è che questi anticipi diventeranno la ‘nuova’ abitudine. fairs 11

Alessandra Guffanti. Siamo giovani... ma già cresciuti but grown-up di Matteo Grazzini

Alessandra Guffanti is a young woman, but she has already built a formidable reputation on the Lombard and Italian entrepreneurial scene. She is the president of Sistema Moda Italia’s Youth Group and vice-president of the Young Entrepreneurs of Assolombarda. She is also in charge of the sales, internationalization and marketing of Guffanti Concept, the company started by her father Gianfranco: “Guffanti Concept- she proudly says- has been distributing Italian and international fashion brands in Italy and abroad since 1989. For twenty years, my father produced his own knitwear collection and, owing to the excellent relationship he had built with well-known multi-brand boutiques, he decided to expand his range of offerings by including creative designers. He has always had an innovative approach, at first with his brand and now with our company”.

We met with her while she was flitting between Milano Unica, the Milano Fashion Week and Pitti Uomo, in search of ideas and inspiration.

Let’s start with talking about your job. You say that it is not limited to just distributing fashion brands….

At our headquarters in Milan, our “historic” range has been expanded to include childrenswear and bridalwear, in addition to womenswear. Different offerings, but these “communicating vessels” are connected and transfer experience and energy to each other. Distributing a brand means going over the whole production chain with the designer: raw materials, processing, communication.

Is the fashion world as alive as it used to be?

Since 2008, I have been rebuilding our market position in the former USSR, China, Korea and Middle East by travelling to over 90 cities in these areas.

In 2016, we received 580 requests for collaboration from brands all over the world, which only proves our strategy right: examining the production chain together and getting the product to the market together. We are constantly committed to brand scouting outside of Italy, looking for brands with a strong identity and having a bond with their place of origin. We were the first to work with Russian and Chinese designers and we go on doing it by partnering them with Italian brands, such as Leitmotiv which takes part in the Milano Fashion Week. Childrenswear is the area of the fashion market that is growing the most in Italy and abroad. We are the pilot case of Pittimmagine’s new E-Pitti software, “Ready to order”, which completely digitalizes the process of order taking.

Alessandra Guffanti è giovane ma da molto tempo lavora nel cuore dell’imprenditoria lombarda e italiana, è presidente del Gruppo Giovani di Sistema Moda Italia e vicepresidente dei Giovani Imprenditori di Assolombarda. E’ da sempre un innovatore prima con il suo brand e ora con la nostra azienda”.

L’abbiamo incontrata tra Milano Unica, la Milano Fashion Week e Pitti Uomo, trovando una fucina di idee e suggerimenti.

Iniziamo con il suo lavoro. Lei ama dire che non si limita a distribuire dei brand di moda…

Dal nostro ufficio di Milano abbiamo ampliato la scelta ‘storica’ inserendo oltre alla donna, il bambino e la sposa. Una combinazione unica come proposta, ma questi “vasi comunicanti” trasmettono esperienza e energia l’uno all’altro in un costante intreccio. Distribuire un brand significa ripercorrere tutta la filiera assieme al designer: materie prime, produzione, comunicazione.

Il mondo del fashion è vivo come una volta?

Dal 2008 ho avviato ex novo i mercati ex Urss, Cina, Corea e Middle Est viaggiando in più di 90 città di queste aree. Solo nel 2016 abbiamo ricevuto 580 richieste di collaborazione da parte di brand a livello mondiale e questo ci conforta sul nostro schema: studiare con loro la filiera e arrivare al mercato assieme. D’altro canto noi facciamo costante scouting di brand anche fuori dall’Italia, tutti con una forte identità e legame al proprio territorio. Siamo stati i primi a avere designer russi e cinesi e continuiamo affiancandoli a brand made in Italy come Leitmotiv che sfila alla Milano Fashion Week. Il mondo bambino è quello con il maggior sviluppo in Italia e all’estero. Siamo il caso pilota del nuovo software di E-Pitti Pittimmagine “Ready to order” con cui è digitalizzata tutta la gestione ordine in resa diretta.

Fashion is an area with experience: how do you youngg make yourself heard and dispense advice to the historic entrepreneurs?

Sistema Moda Italia is the vertical association of Confindustria dedicated to the whole textile chain and its members include spinning and weaving mills, garment makers, industrial dyeing companies and brands from all over Italy. The Youth Group gathers the under-40 company owners or people appointed by the companies, whose activity consists in providing the textile sector with support which is complementary to that provided by the senior group. “Sharing the knowledge” is our motto and in the past three years we have held 35 events in the districts of Como, Biella, Milan, Prato, Friuli, Treviso, Umbria, Naples and Puglia. The Young Entrepreneurs Group focuses its attention equally on every company by organizing visits, workshops and building a reliable network. We were the first to hold our national annual convention in the wonderful districts of Umbria, Naples and Martina Franca. As for innovation, we put the companies in contact with the development centers that work on textile innovation projects and our Tessuto 4.0. conference was all about innovation. As a member of Assolombarda, I have learnt that useful and visionary projects motivate participation.

In February, at the Milano Unica show, you talked about the Connection project. Have there been any developments?

In order to promote the “Made in Italy”, we have to make things easier for the international brands that wish to produce in Italy. I developed Connection to allow international designers to easily contact Sistema Moda Italia and to put them in contact with our member garment makers. Since the launching of the project, we have been contacted by many sales offices of consulates in Milan and we are cooperating with the British, Norwegian and Austrian consulates because they receive production requests for Italy. Our first successful case is that of a Dutch cashmere designer who chose one of our Umbrian members to have her products made.

magari qualche consiglio anche agli imprenditori ‘storici’?

Sistema Moda Italia è la verticale di Confindustria dedicata a tutta la filiera tessile e sono iscritte filature, tessiture, confezionisti, tintorie industriali e brand da tutta Italia. Seguono il Gruppo Giovani i titolari o le persone indicate dalle singole aziendale under 40 per creare un’agenda di attività di supporto al tessile complementare a quella dei senior. Considero questo incarico un impegno civico per supportare le attività delle aziende e dico sempre che partecipare in associazione è per ogni imprenditore, start up o azienda storica una vitamina. “Sharing the knowledge” è il nostro motto e in tre anni abbiamo realizzato 35 eventi nei distretti di Como, Biella, Milano, Prato, Friuli, Treviso, Umbria, Napoli e Puglia. Sul territorio i GGI danno visibilità equamente a tutte le aziende organizzando visite aziendali, workshop e un sano network. Per primi abbiamo portato il nostro convegno annuale di rilievo nazionale nei distretti dell’Umbria , Napoli e Martina Franca. Sul tema innovazione mettiamo in contatto i centri di sviluppo con le aziende per progetti di innovazione tessile e sull’innovazione verteva anche tutto il nostro convegno Tessuto 4.0. In Assolombarda ho imparato a concepire e realizzare progetti utili e visionari per motivare la partecipazione.

A Milano Unica di febbraio parlò del progetto Connection. Ci sono stati sviluppi?

Per promuovere il made in Italy bisogna agevolare i brand internazionali che desiderano produrre in Italia. Ho concepito Connection per permettere ai designer internazionali di contattare facilmente SMI e sentrare in contatto con i nostri soci confezionisti. Ci hanno contattato molti uffici commerciali dei consolati di Milano e con quello inglese, norvegese e austriaco abbiamo individuato delle sinergie perché ricevono richieste di produzione in Italia. Il primo caso di successo è con una designer di cashmere olandese che ha selezionato un nostro socio umbro per la sua produzione.

The Group plays a key role when it comes to education and training. What are your most successful projects so far?

The Young Entrepreneurs Group is preparing a collection of mini-videos of interviews titled “The passion behind the runway” to describe the quality and craftsmanship that go into garment-making, selection of materials and treatments that give the finished products. They are typical Italian stories full of humanity which we want Italian students to learn about in order for them to be able to choose the textile field that suits them best. Technical textile and skilled training currently ensures 80% of employment opportunities and many companies “book” the resources they wish to work with in advance. Our best-known and oldest project is ComOn: for nine years now, about twenty textile companies from Como have been taking in students from European fashion schools for three months for a mutual exchange of learning and creativity. Piattaforma della Moda brings Italy’s main postgraduate fashion schools together and has planned a national event, which will be held for the first time in November in Milan, aimed at establishing contacts between companies and students and coordinating workshops between companies and schools.

What is Alessandra Guffanti’s life beyond her professional life?

This year I turned 40 and it feels like the best time of my life. The motto of my school is: “Wer schaffen will muss frohlich sein”, that is, “Those who are determined to succeed, must be happy” and I throw all my energy into it. I have a law degree, but I have been working in the company since the age of 14 and I love it because I built a great team through dedication and vision. I love dancing swing, cooking and connecting with the people around me. The Guffantis have been living in Como since the 1400s, while my maternal grandfather was Belarusian, my grandmother German and my mother French.

So, going to a German school was quite consistent with my family’s “international” vision, and I feel like a citizen of the world.

Il vostro è un ruolo determinante se si parla di formazione. Quali sono i progetti che ci può segnalare come più 'virtuosi'?

Come GGI stiamo preparando un raccolta di mini-video con interviste dal titolo “La passione prima della passerella” per raccontare la qualità e la manualità nel confezionamento, nella scelta dei tessuti, nei trattamenti che portano al capo finito. Sono attività piene di umanità e di storia italiana e vogliamo che i ragazzi delle scuole le conoscano ancora meglio per scegliere la formazione nel tessile più valida. La formazione tessile tecnica e di manodopera oggi garantisce l’80% di occupazione e molte aziende “prenotano” le risorse con cui lavorare. L’iniziativa storica è ComOn in cui da nove anni una ventina di aziende tessili di Como ospitano per tre mesi i migliori studenti delle scuole di moda europee in una reciproca contaminazione di formazione e creatività. Durante la “Settimana della creatività” il sindaco accoglie gli studenti e c’è un fitto calendario di iniziative sul tessile in città. Piattaforma della Moda invece associa le principali scuole post diploma di moda italiane e organizzerà per la prima volta a novembre a Milano un evento nazionale mirato al posizionamento degli studenti e ai workshop tra aziende e scuole.

Chi è Alessandra Guffanti quando smette i tanti panni istituzionali e lavorativi?

Quest’anno ho compiuto 40 anni e mi sembrano i migliori anni della mia vita. Il motto della mia scuola è “Wer schaffen will muss frohlich sein”, cioè “Chi nella vita vuol concepire deve esserne fiero” e io ci metto tutta la mia energia . Sono laureata in diritto, ma lavoro in azienda dall’età di 14 anni e ne sono innamorata perché con costanza e visione ho costruito una grande squadra. Adoro ballare swing, cucinare e connettere le persone attorno a me. I Guffanti sono di Como dal 1400, mentre mio nonno materno era bielorusso, mia nonna tedesca e mia madre francese, dunque la scelta di fare la scuola tedesca era il linea con la visione “internazionale” della mia famiglia, ed io mi sento cittadina del mondo.

The color of luxury fashion La moda di lusso ha il colore delle arance is orange

The Italians have a saying that goes: “An orange is gold in the morning, silver at noon, and lead at night”. However, the orange we are referring to is not the fruit, but a fabric, the one produced by Orange Fiber, a brilliant entrepreneurial idea which has gained recognition on the Italian textile-clothing scene in a few years’ time. The company produces fabrics targeted at the luxury fashion market by using hundreds of thousands of tons of by-product that the citrus processing industry produces every year. In addition to the advantage of transforming oranges into fabric, this idea provides an environmentally friendly waste disposal and recycling solution. The “mothers” of Orange Fiber are Adriana Santanocito, the current CEO, an expert in innovative textile fibers, and Enrica Arena, a marketing, communication and fundraising professional; the company’s two founders have been joined by entrepreneurs Francesco Virlinzi and Antonio Perdichizzi, and legal adviser Corrado Blandini. Orange Fiber joined the portfolio of FTL Venture, the venture capital fund founded by entrepreneur and fashion editor Miroslava Duma, who sits on the company’s advisory board.

Adriana Santonocito tells La Spola and Showcase all about the company, a few months after the signing of a prestigious agreement with Salvatore Ferragamo.

Orange Fiber is well-known in the textile-clothing world, but describing how it started off, by means of which intuition and what funds may be helpful for those who have brilliant ideas but are unable to concretize them.

One of our goals is to make the “Made in Italy” known beyond Italian borders through our work and message. The company was born out of our wish to do something for our land, Sicily, to turn a problem into a resource and bring innovation and sustainability “L'arancia la mattina è oro, a pranzo è argento, la sera è piombo” recita un proverbio italiano ma nel nostro caso questo agrume ha le forme sinuose di un tessuto, quello prodotto da Orange Fiber, geniale idea imprenditoriale che in pochi anni si è imposta sulla scena del tessile-abbigliamento italiano.

L’azienda infatti crea tessuti destinati al comparto moda-lusso utilizzando centinaia di migliaia di tonnellate di sottoprodotto che l’industria di trasformazione agrumicola produce ogni anno: risparmi sullo smaltimento, recupero e benefici per l’ambiente sono il risultato che riguarda anche l'extra-tessile.

Le ‘genitrici’ di Orange Fiber sono Adriana Santanocito, attuale CEO, specializzata in fibre tessili innovative ed Enrica Arena, specializzata in marketing, comunicazione e raccolta fondi; alle due fondatrici si sono aggiunti gli imprenditori Francesco Virlinzi e Antonio Perdichizzi imprenditori, ed il legale Corrado Blandini. Orange Fiber fa parte del portfolio della FTL Venture Inc, il fondo internazionale di venture capital fondato dall’imprenditrice e fashion editor Miroslava Duma, presente anche nell’advisory board dell’azienda.

E’ Adriana Santonocito a raccontare a La Spola e a Showcase questa realtà, pochi mesi dopo un prestigioso accordo con Salvatore Ferragamo.

Orange Fiber è ormai nota nel mondo del tessile-abbigliamento ma raccontare come è nata, con quale intuito e quali fondi può essere di aiuto a chi ha idee geniali ma non riesce a concretizzarle...

Grazie innanzitutto per descriverci come una realtà già affermata a livello internazionale. Una delle nostre finalità è diffondere il Made in Italy oltre i confini con il lavoro e il nostro messaggio. Siamo nati dal desiderio di fare qualcosa per la nostra terra, la Sicilia, di trasformare un interview 17

into the Italian textile and manufacturing industry. In 2011, when I was studying Fashion Design and Innovative Materials at Milan’s AFOL Moda, I wrote a thesis on sustainable materials, a young trend but which I believed would grow to be strong in the near future.

During the same period, I learned about the difficult situation of Sicily’s citrus processing industry and I came up with the idea of developing an eco-friendly fabric by recycling the by-products of orange juice processing, that is, the peels that the food industry cannot use anymore but represent a huge burden for the companies concerned and, above all, for the environment: about one million tons per year in Italy, the management of which involves substantial expenses for the processing companies and hurts the environment. I went from developing my idea to patenting it, through a feasibility study which I myself worked on in the laboratory of Chemistry of Materials of Milan’s School of Engineering, applying for the Italian patent and then for the international PCT in 2014.

At that time, my flatmate in Milan was Enrica Arena, who studied communication and international cooperation, thinking about a career in the social entrepreneurship field. Enrica was very intrigued by my project and excited to contribute, and so she joined the company in which we have been working side by side since 2014. The funds we received through the competitions and awards we won have been fundamental to meet our first production and management expenses, including the Seed Money we were given by the Trentino Sviluppo project (Operative Program FESR 2007-2013 of Provincia Autonoma di Trento with the contribution of the European Fund of Regional Development), and the funds from Smart&Start, Invitalia (Ministry of Economic Development), as well as the prize we were given at the 2016 Global Change Award, an international award which supports circular production in the fashion industry and is promoted by the H&M Foundation.

Does Orange, the name of the company, exclude the possibility of creating yarns from other fruit waste in the future?

We are currently developing yarn blends with acetate obtained from citrus fruit, which have a great potential but need to be further studied and tested. So, for the time being, our name faithfully reflects our business. The goal is to achieve a degree of productivity problema in una risorsa e portare l’innovazione e la sostenibilità all’interno del comparto tessile e manifatturiero italiano. Nel 2011, nel corso dei miei studi in Fashion Design e materiali innovativi all’AFOL Moda di Milano, ho presentato una tesi sui materiali sostenibili, intercettando un trend giovane, ma che intuivo essere di sicuro sviluppo per il futuro. Nello stesso periodo sono venuta a conoscenza della situazione di sofferenza del comparto agrumicolo siciliano e ho avuto l’idea di sviluppare un tessuto ecologico recuperando i sottoprodotti della spremitura delle arance, bucce che non servivano più all’industria alimentare e che rappresentavano un peso non indifferente per le aziende stesse e, soprattutto, per l’ambiente: circa un milione di tonnellate l’anno in Italia, la cui gestione comporta ingenti costi per le industrie di trasformazione e impatta l’ambiente. Dall’intuizione del tessuto ecologico si è giunti in breve al brevetto, passando attraverso uno studio di fattibilità che io stessa ho aiutato a sviluppare nel laboratorio di Chimica dei Materiali del Politecnico di Milano, depositando il brevetto italiano, esteso poi in PCT internazionale nel 2014.

A quel tempo condividevo la stessa casa a Milano con Enrica Arena, che studiava comunicazione e cooperazione internazionale, immaginando un futuro nell’imprenditoria sociale. Enrica rimase affascinata dal mio progetto, aderendo all’impresa alla quale lavoriamo fianco a fianco dal 2014.

Sicuramente sono state fondamentali certi aiuti ottenuti con concorsi e premi che abbiamo vinto e che hanno permesso di sostenere le prime spese di produzione e amministrative: tra questi l’aiuto ottenuto da Seed Money, progetto di Trentino Sviluppo (programma Operativo FESR 2007-2013 della Provincia Autonoma di Trento con il contributo del Fondo Europeo di Sviluppo Regionale), e da Smart&Start, Invitalia (Ministero Sviluppo Economico), nonché il terzo posto ottenuto nella edizione 2016 della Global Change Award, un premio internazionale che sostiene la produzione circolare nella moda voluto dalla H&M Foundation.

Orange, nel nome, esclude in assoluto la possibilità che pensiate in futuro a filati creati con gli scarti di altri frutti?

Ora siamo nella fase di sviluppo di mischie partendo dall’acetato ricavato dagli agrumi che ha molte potenzialità e che vanno tutte studiate e testate.

Quindi per adesso il nostro nome rispecchia a pieno il nostro lavoro. L’obiettivo è raggiungere un grado di produttività - che vada di pari passo con la commercializzazione del tessuto - in grado di assorbire, se non interamente, almeno la maggiore quantità possibile del sottoprodotto agrumicolo.

C’è ancora molto da fare prima di pensare di recuperare i sottoprodotti di altre lavorazioni. Ma ci auguriamo che nel frattempo sempre più imprese interview 19

Is the collaboration with Ferragamo a point of arrival or the official entry into the world of luxury fashion?

The collaboration that we established through the launching of the Orange Fiber Collection by Ferragamo on April 22, on the International Earth Day, is a beautiful entry into the luxury fashion world, but it is also a point of departure for us. Our dream is to make Orange Fiber the leading company in the production of sustainable fabrics through a “green” production of cellulose textiles from renewable sources and to create a highly recognizable textile brand which differs from other brands in the commitment to environmental protection and transparency of the whole production chain. We plan to turn Orange Fiber into a benchmark for the key players of the fashion-luxury industry that are committed to environmental protection and exclusivity.

Have you ever met your foreign competitors, that is, companies that process natural waste to convert it into fibers?

Yes, over and over again. Every year, all over the world, there are companies that create alternative materials for clothing, accessories, design applied to objects for everyday use. We are particularly impressed with the idea of some young Italian men- they won the Global Change Award this year- who created a material similar to leather and, thus, having the same uses, by processing grape-stalks.

We share the current mindset among young entrepreneurs according to which a problem can be turned into a business opportunity positively associated with environmental protection and launched on the international stage, to prove that we are competitive and active. It is the opposite of being lax, plaintive and unresponsive. si dedichino a un tipo di produzione “circolare” e che riutilizzino insomma, piuttosto che creare ex-novo.

La collaborazione con Ferragamo è un punto di arrivo o l'ingresso 'ufficiale' nel mondo della moda di lusso?

La collaborazione che si è concretizzata con il lancio della Orange Fiber Collection by Ferragamo il 22 aprile, per la Giornata Internazionale della Terra, è un bellissimo ingresso nella moda di lusso, ma rappresenta per noi anche un punto di partenza. Il nostro sogno è fare di Orange Fiber l’azienda leader nel segmento dei tessuti sostenibili attraverso una produzione “green” di tessili cellulosici da fonti rinnovabili e creare un marchio tessile altamente riconoscibile e differenziato dagli altri per l’impegno nella tutela dell’ambiente e la trasparenza dell’intera catena di produzione.

Orange Fiber dovrà diventare l’azienda tessile di riferimento per i player del settore moda-lusso attenti alla tutela ambientale e all’esclusività.

Avete mai avuto un confronto con realtà simili alla vostra all'estero, con aziende che lavorano gli scarti naturali per ottenere fibre?

In continuazione, ogni anno a livello globale ci sono aziende che creano nuovi materiali alternativi per la moda, gli accessori, il design applicato ad ogni oggetto di uso quotidiano. Ci ha colpito l’idea di alcuni ragazzi italiani, vincitori quest’anno della Global Change Award, che hanno ricavato un materiale simile alla pelle, e quindi con le stesse applicazioni produttive, trattando i raspi dell’uva. Ci piace questa nuova mentalità tra i giovani imprenditori - che è poi la nostra - di trasformare un problema in una opportunità, un’occasione imprenditoriale con un risvolto ecologico e portarla all’estero, per dimostrare che siamo competitivi e attivi. Contrasta e svecchia una lassezza che ci ha visto ultimamente sempre di più lamentarci e poco reagire.

Trade shows good Michael Scherpe. Saloni buoni per ogni stagione for any season di Matteo Grazzini

A trip to Italy from Paris to meet with the leading figures of the technical textile industry and to promote one of the trade shows that promises to grow bigger every year, Avantex. We are talking about the head of Messe Frankfurt France, Chief Executive Officer Michael Scherpe: together we had a “look” at the other Le Bourget shows to learn more about the present and the future of the sector.

The latest French trade shows achieved excellent results in terms of both exhibitors and visitors. Is it a sign of more faith in the markets, of improved offerings available to customers from trade shows or of a better international context as compared with 2016?

Generally speaking, the spring shows in France have seen a nearly 2% increase. This year, the three Texworld, Apparel Sourcing and Avantex shows have seen a 6,9% increase and, since the beginning of the crisis in 2010, they have been growing steadily. The reason?

The world population is growing rapidly. At the beginning of my career, the world population was five billion, now it has reached seven billion and is expected to be ten billion in the future. This is the reason behind the textile sector’s ongoing evolution and of our trade shows’ success. In particular, Texworld covers most of the market segments and provides buyers with interesting offerings due to companies that are able to offer high volumes, quality and products in different price ranges.

The textile industry seems increasingly shifting towards technical fabrics. Is Messe Frankfurt France under the same impression?

In 1987, the year Techtextil was established, technical fabrics were not very well-known. Engineers dealt very little with the textile industry and all new developments came from the chemical industry. With Techtextil, our goal was to prove that innovation developed in Un viaggio in Italia per incontrare i protagonisti della filiera del tessile tecnico e per promuovere quella che potrebbe essere una delle fiere dalla crescita più importante, Avantex. Da Parigi si è mosso addirittura il numero uno di Messe Frankfurt France, il Chief Executive Officer Michael Scherpe: con lui abbiamo dato anche uno ‘sguardo’ alle altre fiere di Le Bourget cercando di capire presente e futuro del settore.

L'ultima tornata di fiere francesi ha portato percentuali positive nei numeri di espositori e visitatori. E' un segnale di maggior fiducia dei mercati, di miglioramento dell'offerta da parte dei saloni o di un contesto internazionale migliore rispetto al 2016?

In generale, le fiere primaverili in Francia hanno visto un aumento del 2% circa. Quest’anno le tre manifestazioni Texworld, Apparel Sourcing e Avantex hanno invece registrato un incremento del 6,9% e dall’inizio della crisi nel 2010 sono le fiere francesi che hanno avuto la maggiore crescita. Il motivo? La popolazione mondiale cresce sempre di più. All’inizio della mia carriera era pari a 5 miliardi, oggi è di 7 miliardi e si prevede che in futuro gli abitanti del nostro pianeta saranno 10 miliardi. Questa è la ragione alla base della continua evoluzione del settore tessile e del successo delle nostre fiere. In particolare, Texworld copre la maggior parte dei segmenti di mercato e propone ai buyer una valida offerta espositiva grazie alla presenza di aziende che possono offrire sia volumi che qualità che prodotti appartenenti a diverse fasce di prezzo.

Il baricentro del tessile "che funziona" si sta spostando sempre di più verso il tessuto tecnico. E' una percezione che ha anche Messe Frankfurt France?

Nel 1987, anno della creazione di Techtextil, i tessuti tecnici non erano molto conosciuti. Gli ingegneri non si occupavano molto del comparto tessile e l’innovazione nel settore arrivava soprattutto dall’industria chimica. Abbiamo iniziato con Techtextil pensando e cercando di far 22 interview

one sector could open up opportunities for other industries too. Many companies began realizing that technical fabrics could be applied in the most diverse fields. The production of technical fabrics has increasingly developed over the past 30 thirty years and is crucial to the growth of the whole textile sector. Innovation is very important because it allows producers to keep prices high. At Techtextil, I noticed that technical fabrics were used mostly for workwear and sportswear, but very little in fashion design, where innovation was limited, for instance, to the use of new colors. So, I wondered if even the clothing industry would achieve better results through innovation and Avantex Paris was born out of this reflection and out of the determination to bring innovation even in the fashion business, in order to provide the companies with a platform and encourage them to integrate technology into the fashion world. There are a lot of fashion tech-oriented young people and that is why I believe that today we have all the necessary conditions to successfully combine fashion and technology.

In what does Avantex differ from Techtextil?

Avantex Paris covers the whole fashion chain, from fibers to end-products, from creation to retail. It offers, for instance, finished products, clothing and fashion accessories featuring integrated technology. There has been a big revolution in the past few years. Nearly everyone has a smartphone, that is why fabrics need to be increasingly integrated with new technologies. For instance, it will soon be possible to obtain and relay information to one’s doctor or take medicines through fabrics.

Texworld’s strength lies in the fabrics produced in the Far East. Is the balance shifting or is China still the reference point?

Texworld mirrors the market. The show is attended by many Chinese exhibitors because China is a big textile producer and, thus, capire che l’innovazione sviluppata per un settore potesse rappresentare una chance anche per altre industrie. Molte aziende hanno capito sempre di più che il tessile tecnico poteva avere applicazione in diversi comparti. Lo sviluppo dei tessili tecnici negli ultimi 30 anni è stato importante e fondamentale per lo sviluppo di tutto il settore tessile. L’innovazione è fondamentale perché permette di mantenere alto il livello dei prezzi. Osservando Techtextil ho notato che i tessuti tecnici erano utilizzati nell’abbigliamento di protezione e nello sport, ma molto poco nella moda, dove l’innovazione si limitava per esempio all’utilizzo di nuovi colori. Per questo mi sono chiesto se anche il fashion potesse avere migliori risultati grazie all’innovazione e da questa riflessione e dalla volontà di portare innovazione anche nel campo della moda è nata Avantex Parigi, per offrire una piattaforma e incentivare le aziende a introdurre la tecnologia nel fashion. Molti giovani sono orientati al fashiontech e per questo credo che oggi ci siano le condizioni per coniugare fashion e tecnologia.

In cosa Avantex differisce da Techtextil?

Avantex Paris copre tutta la filiera della moda, dalla fibra al prodotto finito, dalla creazione al retail. Propone per esempio prodotti finiti, abiti ed accessori di moda che abbiano una tecnologia integrata. Negli ultimi anni c’è stata una grande rivoluzione. Quasi tutti portano con sé uno smartphone, per questo nel tessile verranno sempre più integrate le nuove tecnologie. Per esempio sarà possibile rilevare e inviare informazioni al proprio medico e assumere medicinali attraverso i tessuti.

Texworld ha come punto di forza il tessile prodotto nel Far East. Gli equilibri si stanno spostando o è ancora la Cina il Paese di riferimento?

Texworld è specchio del mercato. Alla manifestazione sono presenti molti espositori cinesi perché la Cina rappresenta un grande Paese

plays a key role in the sector. At present, the major textile countries are China, Turkey and India and they all attend Texworld. But other countries are emerging as competitors, such as Cambodia, Vietnam and Ethiopia and, of course, when talking about textile industry, we cannot forget to mention Italy, which is the world’s leading country in terms of creativity. In my opinion, the quality of Chinese production is bound to improve in the future. The importance of the Chinese market is underlined by another successful Messe Frankfurt show, Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics.

How much do “external” causes (terrorism, infrastructure, strikes, religious holidays abroad…) weigh on the organization and management of trade shows?

Safety is an issue that all those who organize and run high-attendance events have to deal with. For the time being, terrorist attacks have not influenced the market. We have actually seen a 4% decrease in the number of visitors attending the show held after November 2015 and the Bataclan attack. As trade show organizers, we are aware that now, because of these attacks, we require different safety strategies, just like other lines of business, for instance, airline companies.

Many European trade shows will be held ahead of their usual schedule to offer collection previews. Are you planning similar action in July and December?

No, we have a different approach to Texworld right now. A “preview” would imply not only pushing the dates ahead, but also offering some clients a part of the collection while launching on the market a more “mature” product later on. The Messe Frankfurt shows adhere to a very specific schedule: we start in Europe at the beginning of the year and then we continue in Asia and, sometimes, in the US from May. produttore anche per il comparto tessile e quindi ha una posizione di grande importanza nel settore. Vietnam, Etiopia e India anche se parlando di tessile naturalmente non possiamo dimenticare l’Italia, che è il Paese leader per quanto riguarda la creatività. In futuro a mio parere migliorerà la qualità della produzione cinese. L’importanza del mercato cinese è sottolineata anche dal successo di un’altra manifestazione Messe Frankfurt, Intertextile Shanghai Apparel Fabrics.

Quanto influiscono i contesti "esterni" (terrorismo, infrastrutture, scioperi, festività religiose all'estero...) nel vostro lavoro di organizzazione e gestione dei saloni?

Il problema della sicurezza riguarda tutti quelli che devono gestire eventi e situazioni che vedono la presenza di molte persone. Per il momento gli attacchi terroristici non hanno influenzato il mercato. Abbiamo in realtà registrato un calo dei visitatori del 4% all’edizione successiva al novembre 2015 e al Bataclan. Come organizzatori di fiere questi episodi sappiamo che adesso si rendono necessarie diverse strategie di sicurezza, così come accade per altri operatori come per esempio le compagnie aeree.

Molte fiere europee hanno anticipato le date per seguire le precollezioni. Voi state pensando a soluzioni simili a luglio e dicembre?

No, al momento per Texworld abbiamo un approccio diverso. Parlare di “preview” vorrebbe dire a mio parere non solo anticipare le date, ma presentare ad alcuni clienti in esclusiva una parte della collezione per poi portare sul mercato un prodotto più “maturo”. Le fiere Messe Frankfurt seguono ritmi precisi, si parte dall’Europa a inizio anno e si continua poi in Asia e a volte in America a partire da maggio.

The setting is that of Techtextil, a trade show which can be described as the home of technical fabrics and where companies show their products to buyers from all over the world.

The context is the one described by Aldo Tempesti, director of TexClubTec, the association that, in Frankfurt, was the reference point for all the many Italian companies in the field and, outside of trade shows, the association whose priority is the understanding, development and promotion of technical and innovative fabrics.

The issue at hand is, mostly, the training of both students and entrepreneurs, even in the light of some negative signs, which may appear paradoxical if we consider that some companies have trouble finding skilled workers.

“Techtextil has always been a successful show- says Tempesti, who worked for SNIA Fibre in the past and has been director of TexClubTec for nearly twenty years- even when other textile sectors were going through the hardest crisis, like in 2008 for the classical textile. It is the world’s major trade show because Europe is the world’s major market, the one having the know-how, universities…”

Let’s get straight to the point. No prize was awarded to Italy at the Techtextil and Texprocess Awards….

La cornice è quella di Techtextil, una fiera dove il tessuto tecnico trova la sua massima esaltazione e dove le aziende presentano i prodotti a buyer di tutto il mondo.

Il quadro invece è quello ‘disegnato’ da Aldo Tempesti, direttore di TexClubTec, che a Francoforte ha fatto da punto di riferimento per le tante aziende italiane del settore e che, al di fuori delle fiere, è l'associazione che si pone come obiettivo prioritario la conoscenza, lo sviluppo e la promozione dei tessili tecnici ed innovativi. Il tema è, più che altro, la formazione, sia degli studenti che degli imprenditori, anche alla luce di alcuni segnali negativi, talvolta paradossale se si considera che alcune aziende ricercano lavoratori specializzati senza trovarne.

“Techtextil è una fiera che è sempre andata bene – esordisce Tempesti, un passato nella SNIA Fibre e direttore di TexClubTec da quasi venti anni – anche in momenti in cui gli altri settori del tessile vivevano la crisi peggiore, come ad esempio nel 2008 per il tessile classico. E’ la più importante al modo anche perché l’Europa è il mercato più importante, quello dove ci sono conoscenze, università…”. interview 33

Our companies have been awarded in the past, this time there were obviously no projects worthy of an award, but I’m not concerned about this. The real problem is that our companies have to struggle with the everyday issues, they cannot look ahead, be forward-looking. In Italy, businesses are focused on the budget, on last-minute customers, on the not-to-miss opportunities. In Italy, the average number of employed individuals in a technical textile manufacturing company is 9, whereas in Germany it is 150. So, it is easy to guess who can invest in planning and research and who cannot”.

What policies should be implemented?

First of all, we should work together and join forces in order to grow bigger in number. Then, we have to realize that technical fabrics are employed in all sectors, from automotive to health-care, from business to fashion. One of Italy’s strengths lies in being a very adaptable, flexible and creative country. If a company in Japan or in the US invents a new material, they come to Italy to have it processed and launched on the market. What we don’t have is the ability to invest in medium and long-term projects. The chemical industry used to do it, but not anymore.

What role do public institutions play?

We need to be supported by the government together with the universities, like in other countries, where universities are forced to establish a close relationship with the industry. All the more so because the technical textile industry can help the traditional Entriamo subito nel tema allora. L’Italia non ha raccolto neppure un premio agli Awards di Techtextil e Texprocess…

In altri anni le nostre aziende sono state premiate, evidentemente stavolta non c’erano progetti all’altezza ma non è questo un problema che mi preoccupa. Il problema vero è che le nostre aziende sono strozzate dal quotidiano, non hanno modo di guardare al futuro, di essere lungimiranti; in Italia si guarda al budget, al cliente che arriva all’ultimo momento, alle occasioni da non perdere. Da noi la media di occupati in un’azienda che fa tessuto tecnico è di 9 persone, in Germania di 150, è facile capire chi può destinare risorse alla sola programmazione e alla sola ricerca e chi no”.

Quali sono le politiche da seguire?

Intanto lavorare insieme per fare aggregazione e avere così numeri più grandi. Poi pensare che il tessile tecnico vale in tutti i settori, dall’automotive alla sanità, dal lavoro alla moda. L’Italia ha il grande pregio di essere una nazione che si adatta, che ha flessibilità e creatività. Se in Giappone o negli Stati Uniti inventano un materiale nuovo poi cercano in Italia le aziende per lavorarlo e lanciarlo sul mercato. Quello che manca a noi italiani proprio per la ristrettezza dei tempi di lavorazione è invece la capacità di investire su progetti a scadenza medio-lunga. Una volta questi venivano dal settore della chimica, che però oggi non esiste più.

Quale ruolo hanno le istituzioni?

Serve un grande supporto da parte di chi governa insieme alle università, come fanno all’estero, dove gli atenei sono di fatto 34 interview

clothing industry make a leap forward. Companies need to be competent, well-informed; expertise is crucial to building a position in the markets, but also to preventing the sector from dying. With the advent of the Far East, price became the most influential factor, but not anymore. Minister Calenda has been quite helpful lately, but the training and education issue has not been dealt with yet.

Sadly enough, the textile industry does not seem to appeal to young people, who do not believe it offers any rosy prospects. In Biella, the two-year textile engineering master course is being discontinued due to the lack of students…

Enough with talking about the crisis and problems. We created a new association in Confindustria which gathers all textile companies and we are the second most important sector in Italy, so why shouldn’t young people and their families rely on us? Why aren’t we supported and encouraged? In Italy, we do not have a textile university like in other countries, such as in Lille or Gent.

Can sustainability help the sector develop and put it in the limelight?

Yes, because it has become a priority of the Italian textile-clothing industry. And the technical textile industry plays a double role: as producer of sustainable items itself and as a support to those who produce other sustainable items, such as filters, fabrics for wind energy applications, conductors for photovoltaic panels….. obbligati a creare un rapporto stretto con l’industria. Tanto più in un momento in cui il tessile tecnologico può aiutare anche quello da abbigliamento tradizionale a fare un salto in avanti. Le aziende devono essere preparate, informate; la conoscenza è la discriminante per imporsi sui mercati ma anche per non far morire il settore. Dopo l’avvento del Far East il presso è diventato una discriminante ma ora non lo è più. Ultimamente il governo con Calenda ha dato un input importante ma manca ancora la questione formazione e scuola.

In effetti il tessile sembra non avere più un grande appeal sui giovani, che non ci vedono un futuro roseo. A Biella chiude il biennio magistrale di ingegneria tessile per mancanza di iscritti…

Bisogna smettere di parlare di crisi e problemi. Abbiamo creato il nuovo soggetto in Confindustria che racchiude tutta la filiera e insieme siamo il secondo settore più importante in Italia, perché i giovani e le loro famiglie non dovrebbero puntarci? E perché non siamo maggiormente supportati? Non abbiamo in Italia un’università tessile come hanno altrove all'estero, tipo a Lille o a Gent.

La sostenibilità può essere di aiuto a sviluppare sistema e attenzione?

Sì, perché ormai è una priorità nel sistema del tessile-abbigliamento italiano. Ed inoltre il tessile tecnico ne è interessato in doppia veste; sia come produttore di articoli sostenibili in sè e per sè sia come produttori di tessuti che aiutano gli altri produttori, anche esterni al tessile, a fare prodotti sostenibili, come i filtri, i tessuti per le pale eoliche, i conduttori per i pannelli fotovoltaici… interview 35

Tight deadlines. Fil-3's doubts Tempi stretti. E la qualità è un’incognita: i dubbi in casa Fil-3

The second half of 2017 is definitely going to be a turning point in the Italian textile-clothing industry and in the whole international trade fair system. The Milano Unica event held in July, a couple of months ahead of its usual schedule, is a matter of concern for all the entrepreneurs and company owners involved in the trade show. Among them is Giacinto Gelli, the owner of Fil-3, who is still not sure it is a good idea: “A trade show held in July is ridiculous- says Gelli- because we do not have enough time to show the collection at its best, to enrich it with the best ideas which usually come at the last minute, after several tests. Now we’ll have to make do with what we have a few days before the show”.

The whole system is affected. “Quality is inevitably sacrificed in the long run- explains Gelli- because creativity is the added value of our items, but now our textile technicians do not have enough time to work on the collection, on new colors, items and weaves. Creating new yarns or pairing yarns by different suppliers has become impossible. Today, the district is dependent on four to five major brands that drop down supplies, both basics and fancy items, leading to the impoverishment of the supply chain and shrinking the district's profit margins. We need to be able to give the right value to the product, because that's how we will be profitable throughout the supply chain".

La seconda metà del 2017 è sicuramente un crocevia importante per il tessile-abbigliamento italiano e per tutto il sistema fieristico internazionale. L’anticipo a luglio di Milano Unica è un giro di boa guardato con attenzione, e un po’ di apprensione, da tutti gli addetti ai lavori. Uno di questi è Giacinto Gelli, titolare di Fil-3, che non è ancora convinto della bontà della scelta: “Una fiera a luglio è un’assurdità – dice Gelli – perché non possiamo studiare bene la collezione, non c’è la possibilità di rinnovarla con le idee migliori, che di solito arrivano all’ultimo momento, dopo aver fatto le varie prove. Così invece bisogna prendere per buono quello che riusciamo a fare pochi giorni prima di andare in fiera”.

A rimetterci è tutto il sistema: “Sì, perché cala la qualità – spiega ancora Gelli – in quanto fantasia e creatività sono i valori aggiunti dei nostri articoli ma adesso i tecnici non hanno il tempo di capire la collezione, di valutare i colori, gli articoli, le armature. Lavorare sulla fantasia, creare nuovi filati o abbinarne più di uno di fornitori diversi è impossibile. Oggi il distretto dipende da quattro-cinque brand importanti che mettono all'asta al ribasso le forniture, sia dei basici ma anche degli articoli di fantasia, portando all'impoverimento della filiera e al restringimento dei margini di guadagno del distretto. Bisogna riuscire a dare e a farsi dare il giusto valore al prodotto, perchè così ci sarà guadagno per tutta la filiera". focus 37

Schools and companies: Scuola e imprese: mismatching il più grande rischio mismatch is the greatest risk

Companies, schools and associations have always been collaborating: the training of technical professionals is one of the strengths of any production sector. A good example of this cooperation can be found in the fashion and textile world and has been a cause for reflection by the system’s key players for decades.

We talked about it with Ermanno Rondi, an industrialist from Biella, in charge of Confindustria’s Technical Group on Professional Training and School-Work Alternation.

How has the schools-companies collaboration been going in the past few years?

Very well, owing also to the Law 107 of 2015 which established school/work alternation. What for many years was left to voluntary work and to the initiatives by single individuals is now structured and regulated. So, there is an excellent relationship between schools and companies. What we are a bit worried about is the alienation of young people from textile training lately. Actually, not only is technical textile training suffering on the national level, but nearly every family has suffered from the economic crisis that has brought huge restructurings over the past ten years and is doubtful about the opportunities offered by this kind of education.

Towards what kind of education are young people oriented?

The national trend is towards secondary school with an emphasis on humanities or on sciences: 200 thousand lyceum students versus 160 thousand technical school students in 2016. Actually, many students attending a lyceum fail to complete their course of studies and, above all, there is a big mismatch between the supply and demand of professional competence in the labour market. Italian companies are in need of 76 thousand technical professionals, versus 359 thousand young people having a degree and looking for a job. These are the 2016 data.

Is the lack of professionals available to fill the demand already impacting on the companies?

Yes, definitely: in the past few years, major restructuring plans and the Fornero Law have prevented many companies from letting older workers go to replace them with younger workers. But now, with the older workers retiring on grounds of

Questa collaborazione esiste anche nel mondo della moda e del tessile e da decenni è oggetto di grande riflessione da parte di tutti i soggetti del sistema.

Ne parliamo con Ermanno Rondi, industriale biellese, responsabile del Gruppo Tecnico di Confindustria su Formazione professionale e Alternanza scuola-lavoro.

Come procede in questi ultimi anni la collaborazione scuola-impresa?

Sicuramente molto bene, forti anche della legge 107 del 2015 che prevede l’alternanza scuola/lavoro. Quello che per molti anni è stato volontariato e buone iniziative dei singoli, adesso è strutturato e disciplinato. Il rapporto è quindi ottimo. Semmai quello che ci fa un po’ preoccupare è la disaffezione che negli ultimi anni si è consolidata tra i giovani nei confronti della formazione tessile. In realtà non solo la formazione tecnica indirizzata al settore tessile patisce a livello nazionale, la crisi economica che da più di dieci anni ha costretto a grandi ristrutturazioni fa sì che quasi in ogni famiglia ci siano esperienze che fanno dubitare dell’opportunità di questo tipo di istruzione.

Quindi verso che tipo di formazione sono indirizzati i ragazzi?

La tendenza nazionale è verso una marcata liceizzazione dei percorsi: 160mila iscritti nell’anno 2016 agli istituti tecnici contro i 200mila ai licei. Da questa scelta in realtà deriva una forte dispersione, perché non tutti i ragazzi che scelgono un liceo poi riescono a completare un percorso che li conduca al diploma prima e alla laurea poi, ma soprattutto un grande mismatch tra richiesta e offerta di professionalità nel mondo del lavoro. Mancano 76mila figure tecniche nelle aziende, contro 359mila laureati in cerca di impiego. Sono dati del 2016.

Queste assenze in azienda si avvertono già in maniera significativa?

Assolutamente sì: da qualche anno importanti ristrutturazioni aziendali ma anche la legge Fornero hanno mantenuto in azienda molti lavoratori in avanti con gli anni, negli ultimissimi anni che questi lavoratori hanno iniziato a lasciare l’attività per raggiunti limiti d’età, 38 school

age, the generation gap is widening and will reach its peak in 3 to 5 years’ time. We can only hope that young people will start growing aware of this trend and go back to studying technical fields. In any case, all technical schools are structured as a five-year course of studies.

What is the greatest risk associated with this situation?

The risk is the delocalization of production processes to other countries: a trend that began a few years ago because of the lower costs in terms of labour, energy and raw materials, but which may grow stronger in the near future because of the current lack of technical professionals.

What role do Confindustria and schools play in all this?

Schools must provide students with career guidance and counselling, besides giving information about where the graduates are placed and work after graduation. Confindustria must provide information about the companies’ real needs. And the companies have to make their specific needs known. In short, everyone has to work on providing information about work and industry.

What is the situation of the Biella district?

The Itis Sella school in Biella is achieving great results: it closely collaborates with the companies and 100% of graduates find a job. Unfortunately, not many students graduate from this school, about 20 to 25 per year, but the results are positive anyway. Instead, Città Studi offers short professional courses to meet the companies’ specific needs.

Qual è il rischio più importante che deriva da questa situazione?

Il rischio è che le lavorazioni in certi settori si spostino in altri paesi: tendenza che è iniziata diversi anni fa per i minori costi da sostenere in materia di manodopera, energia e materie prime, ma che ora potrebbe consolidarsi anche per la mancanza di professionalità.

In tutto questo, qual è il ruolo di imprese, Confindustria e scuola?

Le scuole devono indubbiamente fare orientamento per illustrare le loro potenzialità e la loro offerta, oltre che illustrare il collocamento dei diplomati in uscita. Confindustria ha il ruolo di fornire informazioni oggettive sulle reali necessità delle aziende. le imprese da parte loro devono far conoscere i loro fabbisogni specifici. Tutti, in sostanza, devono lavorare sull’informazione.

Qual è, infine, la situazione del distretto biellese?

L’Itis Sella a Biella sta dando ottimi risultati: gode di stretti collegamenti con le aziende e ad oggi i diplomati sono totalmente occupati subito dopo l’uscita. Va detto che i diplomati non sono molti, 20/25 all’anno, comunque i risultati sono positivi. Con Città Studi, invece, c’è una proficua collaborazione per l’organizzazione di corsi professionali brevi, che vadano incontro alle esigenze delle aziende.

Una panoramica del "Newton" di Varese

Every textile district has its own technical school offering education and training in the textile field: famous schools committed to transforming students into professionals who are still highly in demand.

Como has the I.S.I.S. Paolo Carcano school, but for 150 years the locals have been affectionately calling it Setificio (silk factory),the source from which trained professionals find their place in Como’s worldwide renowned silk industry.

The school experienced a moment of decline about fifteen years ago, when the number of students dropped to 300, but today it has over one hundred students and is in excellent health.

Obviously, even the Setificio had to adapt to new scenarios and the training it offers is divided in three areas: traditional textiles, graphics and lyceum. It enjoys a well-established relationship with the local companies and there is a local institution committed to promoting this collaboration: Fondazione Setificio, consisting of several companies from Como, which acts as a link between schools and businesses and sets the rules for this collaboration.

Apprenticeships, school-work alternation, managers and entrepreneurs meeting with students. The school provides also an experimental program of “strengthened alternation” , which consists in a very strong collaboration between about twenty companies and twenty students: the goal is to prevent the most brilliant students from leaving to pursue a career in another country. The school offers a two-year Fashion System Technician Course and a three-year Fabric Design and Textiles, Clothing and Fashion Course.

Ogni distretto tessile ha un istituto scolastico di riferimento per garantire una formazione adeguata: scuole storiche che da sempre formano figure professionali, molte delle quali tuttora molto ricercate.

Como ha il 'suo' Setificio, la cui denominazione ufficiale è I.S.I.S. Paolo Carcano, ma da 150 anni i comaschi lo chiamano così: è da lì che escono le figure professionali che hanno fatto del distretto serico un’eccellenza nel mondo.

L’Istituto ha conosciuto un momento di declino una quindicina di anni fa, quando il numero degli iscritti è sceso intorno a quota 300, ma oggi è tornato a superare i mille iscritti e si può dire che goda di ottima salute. Anche il Setificio ha dovuto adeguarsi ai tempi nuovi e oggi conta tre anime: la tradizionale tessile, quella grafica e un liceo. Il rapporto con le aziende del territorio è assolutamente consolidato ed esiste anche un organo che istituzionalizza questa collaborazione: la Fondazione Setificio, composta da alcune imprese comasche, che funge da trait d’union tra scuola e imprese e determina le modalità di collaborazione.

Stage, alternanza scuola-lavoro, testimonianze di manager e imprenditori. A tutto questo si aggiunge un percorso sperimentale di ‘alternanza potenziata’ che consiste in un lavoro di formazione e collaborazione molto forte tra una ventina di imprese e una ventina di ragazzi: obiettivo è quello di tenere sul territorio i cervelli, magari anche dopo un percorso universitario.

Il corso di Tecnico del Sistema Moda ha un biennio comune, mentre il triennio contempla il corso di Disegno per tessuti e quello di Tessile, abbigliamento e moda.

L'Istituto "Paolo Carcano" di Como are closely associated with Istituto Buzzi, the school that has been churning out technicians and managers for Prato’s and Italy’s textile industry for 130 years. The school has evolved over the years and currently offers a two-year preparatory course of studies and a three-year specialization course with six different programs, one of which is Fashion System.

The Fashion System program is divided in textiles, clothing and fashion and is designed to develop the skills required to design a sample collection, supervise the various production stages, perform quality control, take care of product marketing and contribute to the company’s creative, production and organizational innovation.

Among the subjects are Technologies of Fashion Materials and Production and Organizational Processes, Applied Chemistry and Finishing Treatments on Materials for Fashion Products which includes textile fibers and the performance of materials in the dyeing and finishing stage, Economics and Marketing. The school is equipped with state-of-the-art labs where students can practice what that they have been taught and which offer also consultancy for textile companies.

The school works in close collaboration with local textile companies, which offer the four and fifth-year students apprenticeships and traineeships as entry routes into a career in the textile industry.

In Varese, the best-known technical school is Istituto Tecnico Newton, which offers a “Fashion System” program divided in two areas of study: “Textiles, Clothing and Fashion” and “Shoes and Fashion”. In both cases, students are required to develop proficiency in raw materials, products and production processes for the manufacturing of traditional and innovative fabrics and fashion accessories. The young Itis graduate has specific skills in the various fields of creation, design, production and marketing for the textile, clothing, shoe, accessory and fashion sector.

Itis graduates usually find a job in the fields of creation, design and production of yarns, fabrics, garments, shoes and accessories, but also in the organization, management and quality control of raw materials and finished products. They can also take care of the planning of corporate activities, in addition to the activities related to creative, production and organizational innovation.

The school has a very strong bond with the local community and businesses: school-work alternation, apprenticeships and scholarships are the pillars on which the schools-companies collaboration is built, a collaboration further strengthened by the employment of many graduates in the district’s entrepreneurial system.

A Prato quando si parla di formazione tessile si intende Istituto Tullio Buzzi, che da 130 anni forma i quadri tecnici e dirigenziali dell'industria tessile pratese e non solo. L’Istituto offre un biennio propedeutico e un triennio di specializzazione con sei indirizzi, uno dei quali è Sistema Moda, che si articola in tessile, abbigliamento e moda e forma figure che potranno progettare il campionario, seguire la produzione, organizzare il controllo della qualità, occuparsi della commercializzazione, contribuire all’innovazione. Tra le materie di indirizzo c'è Tecnologie dei materiali e dei processi produttivi e organizzativi, Chimica applicata e nobilitazione dei materiali per i prodotti moda in cui si studiano le fibre tessili e il comportamento dei materiali nella fase di tintoria e finissaggio, Economia e marketing. L’Istituto è dotato di laboratori nei quali gli studenti svolgono attività pratica ma che offrono anche attività di consulenza per le aziende.

Stretti sono i legami con le imprese tessili anche grazie agli stage che in quarta e quinta portano i ragazzi nel mondo del lavoro. Prendendo atto della ristrutturazione industriale degli ultimi anni, nei programmi si è dato spazio, con intervento di esperti esterni, alla confezione.

Un'informazione incoraggiante riguarda gli iscritti: dopo anni di riflusso, in cui il numero di diplomati si era andato affievolendo in concomitanza alla crisi e al buon senso comune che il distretto tessile fosse destinato a scomparire, negli ultimi due o tre anni (grazie a una politica di informazione e orientamento anche insieme alle associazioni imprenditoriali) gli iscritti all'indirizzo Sistema Moda sono in aumento e il prossimo anno saranno fatte tre sezioni. Questo riequilibra il mercato del lavoro che registra esigenze di assunzioni difficilmente concretizzabili anche perché più della metà dei diplomati prosegue gli studi.

A Varese il riferimento è l'Istituto Tecnico Newton, che presenta un indirizzo “Sistema Moda” diviso in due articolazioni “Tessile, abbigliamento e moda” e “Calzature e moda”. In entrambe si acquisiscono le competenze che caratterizzano il profilo professionale in relazione alle materie prime, ai prodotti e processi per la realizzazione di tessuti tradizionali e innovativi e di accessori moda. Il giovane diplomato Itis ha competenze specifiche nell’ambito delle diverse realtà ideativo-creative, progettuali, produttive e di marketing del settore tessile, abbigliamento, calzatura, accessori e moda.

Chi esce dall’Itis varesino si colloca negli ambiti della ideazione, progettazione e produzione di filati, tessuti, confezioni, calzature e accessori, ma anche in quelli di organizzazione, gestione e controllo della qualità delle materie prime e dei prodotti finiti. Può occuparsi della pianificazione delle attività aziendali, oltre che di quelle di innovazione creativa, produttiva e organizzativa. Il legame con il territorio è forte e ormai consolidato: alternanza scuola-lavoro, stage, borse di studio sono gli strumenti di una collaborazione che si perfeziona con l’assorbimento di molti diplomati nel contesto imprenditoriale del distretto.

The red thread of ideas: Il filo rosso delle idee: Lanerossi compie 200 anni Lanerossi turns 200 di Elisa Signorini

Doing things well and making them known. This has always been Lanerossi’s double goal, a goal now shared with all the companies of the sector, but Lanerossi set this goal over one hundred years ago, when communication was far from being a priority for just about any manufacturing company.

The company’s close attention to communication appears clear from the celebrations for the bicentenary of Lanerossi, founded

by Francesco Rossi in Schio, and which Gruppo Marzotto and Filivivi, the current owners of the brand, planned to hold at the same time as the Pitti shows. On the occasion of both the Pitti Uomo and Pitti Filati events, the Lemon-House of Villa Vittoria, opposite the Fortezza da Basso, hosts the exhibition The Red Thread of Ideas. Lanerossi 200 Years. Lanificio Rossi (which was shortened to Lanerossi) was started in 1817 in Schio, near Vicenza, by Francesco Rossi, but his son Alessandro brought the company to unprecedented heights. Alessandro Rossi took over at the helm of the company in 1849 and transformed it into one of Italy’s greatest industrial success stories. In the early 1900s, the company owned many plants in the Vicenza area. And while Marzotto was building the Social City, a complex of charitable and recreational institutions in Valdagno, Lanerossi built workingclass neighborhoods and working men’s clubs in Schio.

“These two companies, located about ten kilometers from one another as the crow flies- says Sergio Tamborini, the managing director of Gruppo Marzotto - paid special attention to the social context in which they operated and, by doing so, they influenced the growth and development of the area and the community’s wellbeing, long before the economic boom of the postwar period”.

In 1955, however, Lanerossi was hit by a major crisis and, in 1962, ENI performed what the politicians and the press of the time Fare bene e far conoscere quello che si fa bene. Questo da sempre il duplice obiettivo di Lanerossi, obiettivo che oggi condividono tutte le aziende di ogni settore, certo, ma Lanerossi se li è posti più di cento anni fa, quando la comunicazione non era certo una delle priorità delle manifatture.

E’ proprio questa attenzione alla comunicazione che emerge dalle celebrazioni per il bicentenario di Lanerossi, fondata da Francesco Rossi a Schio, e che il Gruppo Marzotto e Filivivi, attuali proprietari del marchio, hanno voluto far coincidere con le manifestazioni fiorentine del Pitti. Sia in occasione di Pitti Uomo che di Pitti Filati, Lanerossi presenta la mostra ‘Il filo rosso delle idee. Lanerossi 200 anni’ che si tiene alla Limonaia di Villa Vittoria, davanti alla Fortezza da Basso.

Il Lanificio Rossi (poi abbreviato in Lanerossi) nasce nel 1817 a Schio, nella provincia di Vicenza, per iniziativa di Francesco Rossi, ma è al figlio Alessandro che si deve lo sviluppo della impresa. Alessandro Rossi assume la direzione nel 1849 e trasforma l’azienda in una delle maggiori industrie italiane. Agli inizi del novecento la Società conta numerosi stabilimenti nel vicentino. E se la Marzotto realizza a Valdagno la Città Sociale, complesso di opere assistenziali e ricreative, Lanerossi realizza a Schio i quartieri operai, i dopo lavoro, opere sociali.

“Due realtà, distanti in linea d’aria una decina di chilometri – commenta Sergio Tamborini, amministratore delegato Gruppo Marzotto - che hanno prestato attenzione alla produzione ma anche al contesto sociale in cui erano inserite, che hanno influenzato la crescita e lo sviluppo del territorio e hanno dato benessere alla popolazione, ancor prima del boom economico del dopoguerra”.

Un particolare di una campagna ideata da Claudia Armando Sancilio Testa called a “rescue operation”, by taking over the company. In those years, the name of the company was closely associated with Vicenza’s football team, Lanerossi Vicenza: Paolo Rossi playing, the team finishing second in the Serie A championship and the whole city partaking in a dream come true which is now, unfortunately, only a distant, though indelible, memory.

“From the economic point of view, those were very difficult years- goes on Tamborini- but very active from the social point of view: by associating its name with the local football team, Lanerossi was ahead of its time in realizing how important image is”.

The exhibition, curated by Alessandra Bosco and Fiorella Bulegato, highlights the quality of communication that Lanerossi pursued over the decades, by using material nearly unknown to the public. And, through the history of the brand, the exhibition explores the recent history of our country, for instance, the commercial success of the electric blanket that was advertised on the Carosello show.

The exhibition showcases the work of the artists and designers who collaborated with the company starting from the 1930s, such as Adolfo Busi, Studio Stile, Armando Testa, Pino Tovaglia, Severo Pozzati, Claudia Morgagni, or photographers like Mauro chiamano “salvataggi”, rilevando la società. In quegli anni il nome della società si lega indissolubilmente alla squadra di calcio del Vicenza, la Lanerossi Vicenza: Paolo Rossi, un secondo posto in serie A ed un'intera città coinvolta in un sogno sportivo che adesso purtroppo per Vicenza rimane un ricordo, sia pure indelebile.

“Dal punto di vista economico quelli furono anni assolutamente difficili – continua Tamborini - ma molto attivi dal punto di vista sociale: legando il proprio nome alla squadra di calcio la Lanerossi precorre assolutamente i tempi ed è forse qui che diventa importante l’immagine”.

L’esposizione, curata da Alessandra Bosco e Fiorella Bulegato, vuole evidenziare proprio la notevole qualità della comunicazione che Lanerossi ha utilizzato nella sua storia, avvalendosi di materiali pressoché sconosciuti al grande pubblico. E, attraverso la storia di questo marchio, raccontare anche quella dell’intero Paese: basti pensare alla celebre termocoperta pubblicizzata in Carosello.

Il percorso espositivo sceglie di privilegiare l’intreccio fra le opere dei maggiori autori che hanno collaborato con l’azienda a partire dagli anni Trenta del Novecento – artisti e designer come Adolfo Busi, Studio Stile, Armando Testa, Pino Tovaglia, Severo Pozzati, 46 history

“The exhibition draws on material from Lanerossi’s extraordinary archives- said Alessandra Bosco during the presentation of the exhibition- material never shown to the public before and of the highest quality: we selected 100 pictures in an amazingly beautiful place which, we hope, can be experienced within the exhibition too”.

In 1987, Marzotto took over Lanerossi from Gruppo ENI. Today, with the Lanerossi brand, Gruppo Marzotto designs, produces and distributes home fabrics and furnishings. The Filivivi Group (created out of the merger of the Lanerossi Filati division and Manifattura Lane Folco) is the licence holder of the Lanerossi Filati brand, owned by Marzotto.

“Filivivi goes on promoting the brand’s Italian heritage- says Stefano Verzoletto, president and managing director of Filivivi - and believing in the importance of effectively communicating our strengths: unfortunately, we cannot rely on iconic means such as Carosello anymore, but the new media have a great potential”.

“La Mostra utilizza materiali provenienti dallo straordinario patrimonio rappresentato dall’Archivio Storico Lanerossi di Schi – ha illustrato Alessandra Bosco in occasione della presentazione della mostra – materiali inediti e di altissima qualità: abbiamo selezionato 100 immagini all’interno di un luogo di grande fascino, che auspichiamo possa essere percepito anche nella mostra”.

Nel 1987 la Marzotto rileva la Lanerossi dal Gruppo ENI. Oggi, con il marchio Lanerossi, il Gruppo Marzotto progetta, produce e distribuisce Tessuti e Arredo Casa. Il Gruppo Filivivi (nato nel 2005 dalla fusione tra la divisione Lanerossi Filati e Manifattura Lane Folco) è licenziatario del marchio Lanerossi Filati, di proprietà della Marzotto.

The hamburger, which was once the symbol of cheap and unhealthy food eaten fast and forgotten faster, now ranks high on the list of gourmet delights: prepared in almost endless variations, it is the perfect dish for any age, filling and tasty without costing you a fortune.

And so, people talking business over a dish of hamburger and fries is not an uncommon sight anymore. That is why, this time, Showcase takes you exhibitors and visitors attending the trade shows in Florence, Milan, London and Paris to the best burger joints in town or to veritable restaurants where hamburgers have made it to the main course menu (with or without bun).

In Florence, there is Grif, the acronym for Glamour Restaurant in Florence (Piazza del Carmine 8), where you can enjoy an Italianstyle hamburger in a futuristic setting designed by Italo Rota. Or Lungarno 23 (Lungarno Torrigiani 23), which makes hamburgers with Chianina beef exclusively sourced from local farmers. One of the first burger joints in Florence, when fast food chains were yet to come, is Ringo (Borgo San Jacopo 19/r): delicious bun and meat, tasty sauces, just the perfect cooking point, and vaguely seventies-style interiors. At Zoe (Via dei Renai 13), in one of the city’s trendiest neighborhoods, San Niccolò, you can treat yourself to Italian-style hamburgers, as well as chicken curry, carpaccio dishes and big salads. Sant'Agostino 23 (Via Sant'Agostino 23), just Uscito da tempo dal contesto in cui era relegato, quello del fast food e del panino mangiato in pochi minuti senza nemmeno apprezzarne il gusto o la qualità adesso l’hamburger è entrato di diritto nella lista dei cibi da gourmet: oggetto di sperimentazioni a volte ardite, piatto per ogni età, ottimo modo per riempirsi la pancia deliziando il palato senza per questo svuotare il portafogli.

E non è insolito ritrovarsi intorno ad un piatto con hamburger e patatine per parlare di affari o per stipulare accordi importanti. Ecco perché stavolta Showcase prova a indirizzare i frequentatori delle fiere di Firenze, Milano, Londra e Parigi verso i locali che preparano al meglio l’hamburger, al piatto o nel panino, siano essi luoghi dove la carne è l’unica protagonista o ristoranti dove questa pietanza è entrata da tempo nel menu principale.

A Firenze c’è ad esempio il Grif, acronimo di Glamour Restaurant in Florence (piazza del Carmine 8), dove si mangiare l'hamburger all'italiana in un ambiente futuristico, progettato da Italo Rota. Oppure il Lungarno 23 (Lungarno Torrigiani 23), che prepara hamburger di Chianina toscana fatti solo con carni provenienti dagli allevamenti in zona di origine. Uno dei primi a portare l’hamburger a Firenze, quando ancora i fast food non esistevano, è Ringo (Borgo San Jacopo 19/r): buoni il pane e la carne, gustose le salse, perfetta la cottura; il tutto in un luogo vagamente anni ‘70. steps away from Piazza Santo Spirito, makes delicious burgers, but its fries and sauces really make the difference. Keep in mind that it is open only at lunchtime.

In Milan, there are plenty of places to choose from, given that the city is big and busy. Therefore, our list is far from exhaustive and only representative of fast-changing cuisines and different tastes: just consider, for example, the ways one prefers to have one’s meat cooked. As a tribute to the famous actor, the specialty of Denzel. Art burger, fish and more (Via Washington 9) is the Denzel Burger made with freshly-ground beef patties, salad, tomatoes, onions and pickles. Those really hungry but in control of their health, can try the 530-gram burger. Located in the Chinatown area, at 63 Via Paolo Sarpi, MU (Milano Unica has nothing to do with it…) offer hamburgers made with Chianina and Fassona beef, Campania cow buffalo meat and Patanegra pork with Spanish ham. Last but not least, three historic eateries in Milan: Rock Burger, Al Mercato and Macelleria Popolare. Rock Burger, on Via Ercole Oldofredi, makes its own sauces, including the delicious mayonnaise, and- hamburger purists might scoff at the mere idea- the vegan burger.

At Mercato, at 16 Via Sant’Eufemia, the only flaw is the waiting time which, however, testifies to the restaurant’s food quality. At Macelleria Popolare (Piazza XXIV), the meat, the cooking, the bread and service are considered to be among the best in town.

July in London: dining outdoors, perhaps in one of the branches of a quality burger chain, such as Kua ‘Aina at 26 Foubert’s Place, near Carnaby Street in Soho, is a must. Be open to unusual pairings and flavors though, such as beef, avocado and tuna burger accompanied by a coconut milkshake. Add in the house fries, simply delicious. Typical London-style hamburgers at Rox Burger, at 82 Lee High Road: well-recommended if there is a large party of people with different tastes, as the menu includes a vegetarian option. Mere minutes from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street is Patty & Bun, at 54 James Street: the deliciousness of the buns passo con pollo al curry, carpacci e insalatone. Infine il Sant'Agostino 23 (via Sant'Agostino 23), a due passi da piazza Santo Spirito: oltre agli hamburger a fare la differenza sono patatine e salse. Per chi è in fiera vale ricordare che è aperto solo a pranzo.

A Milano la scelta è ancora più ampia, in ragione delle dimensioni della città. Per questo la guida non può essere esaustiva ma solo rappresentativa di una cucina in continua evoluzione e di gusti non uniformi, basti pensare al grado di cottura della carne. Omaggio al noto attore il nome del Denzel (in via Washington 9) Art burger, fish and more: la specialità è il Denzel Burger con carne trita di manzo fresca preparata in casa, con insalata pomodori cipolle e cetrioli sottaceto. Chi ha fame e pieno controllo della salute può arrivare anche all’hamburger da 530 grammi. In zona Chinatown il MU (Milano Unica non c’entra…), che propone hamburger di bovino, di chianina, di fassona, di bufalo campano e di suino Patanegra con prosciutto iberico. E’ in via Paolo Sarpi 63. Per finire tre capisaldi a Milano: Rock Burger, Al Mercato e Macelleria Popolare. Il primo è in via Ercole Oldofredi e produce anche le salse, con l’eccellenza toccata dalla maionese; adattamento ai tempi non troppo gradito ai puristi è l’hamburger vegano. Al Mercato di via Sant’Eufemia 16 l’unica pecca sono talvolta i tempi di attesa, testimonianza comunque della qualità del cibo, mentre a Macelleria Popolare (piazza XXIV) la carne, la preparazione, il pane ed il servizio sono per molti i migliori della città.

Luglio a Londra: più che consentita una cena all’aperto o in un hamburgeria espressione di qualche catena, come ad esempio il Kua ‘Aina, al numero 26 di Foubert’s Place, nei pressi di Carnaby Street a Soho. I gusti devono essere allenati a sapori inconsueti perché la carne viene preparata in abbinamento a ingredienti insoliti come avocado e tonno e magari accompagnata da milkshake al cocco. In the same area, not far from Piccadilly Circus, at 97-99 Wardour Street, the Byron is a favorite with tourists and locals alike, as it offers a number of options including classic burgers, French fries, onion rings, vegetarian and low-fat dishes. Near Camden Town is Haché Camden (24 Inverness Street), indeed a gourmand’s haven: hamburgers carefully prepared and presented and a young and friendly staff. We recommend booking a table in advance to make sure you get a seat.

Lastly, Paris. Again, the city offers an endless choice of restaurants and our list is restricted to a few arrondissements only. The first restaurant we suggest is located in the 6th arrondissement: Le Bistrot Famili, at 18 Rue Guisarde. It is not a big place, but carefully designed. The burgers come with huge portions of fries, which can be shared with the other guests. Atelier Saint-Georges, at 16 Rue Henry Monnier, serves some of the best hamburgers in Paris. The buns are branded with the restaurant’s logo and the meat is not minced but chopped with a knife. A nice place for a quick snack at the bar of the Marché des Enfants Rouges is Le Burger Fermier des Enfants Rouges (39 Rue de Bretagne): all ingredients are sourced in Picardy and you have only three choices to make: cooking point, with or without bacon and type of cheese. Paris New York has three branches (50 Rue du Faubourg Saint-Denis, 1 Rue Perrée, 96 Rue Oberkampf) and it is the place in Paris, among those suggested by us, that comes closer to a burger chain. It is impossible to recommend one burger in particular, new items being added to the menu all the time. And to end on a high note: Big Fernand, scattered across four arrondissements (40 Place du Marché Saint-Honoré in the 1st , 32 Rue Saint-Sauveur in the 2nd , 99 Rue de Provence and 55 Rue du Faubourg Poissonnière in the 9th , 86 Boulevard du Montparnasse in the 14th ). Here, the name of the dish has been Frenchified into hamburgé. “Fast” food in terms of serving time, “gourmet” food as for quality: we recommend the Bartolomé burger, with Raclette cheese, smoked bacon, onion confit, chives and two house sauces. che sono la vera specialità. Hamburger tipicamente londinesi al Rox Burger, in Lee High Road, al numero 82: opzione valida per gruppi di persone con gusti diversi, visto che c’è anche un’opzione vegetariana. A pochi metri dal brulicare di negozi di Oxford Street c’è Patty & Bun, al 54 di James Street: variabile da non dimenticare è la bontà del pane, che qui è assicurata. Sempre in zona, non lontano da Piccadilly Circus, in Wardour Street 97- 99, il Byron mette d’accordo londinesi e viaggiatori con hamburger tradizionali, patatine, onion rings, piatti vegetariani e dietetici. Vicino a Camden Town, che in ogni caso assicura un rifugio dai mille sapori per il palato, si trova Haché Camden (24 Inverness Street): hamburger presentati con cura e personale cordiale e giovane fanno consigliare una prenotazione per essere sicuri di avere un posto a sedere.

Chiusura a Parigi. Anche in questo caso scelta infinita e bisogna limitarsi a pochi quartieri. Il primo consiglio è nel 6° arrondissement: Le Bistrot Famili, al 18 di Rue Guisarde, locale non grande ma curato. L’hamburger è accompagnato da tante patatine fritte, abbastanza da poterle condividere con altri commensali. L’Atelier Saint-Georges al 16 di Rue Henry Monnier propone alcuni tra gli hamburger migliori di Parigi. Tra le curiosità ci sono il pane marchiato col simbolo del locale ed anche la carne non tritata ma tagliata col coltello.
