Just a year ago, few were those

who would have believed 2017 to be the year

of the Italian textile-clothing industry’s revival. 2016 had

begun under favorable auspices, owing to the positive inheritance received

from 2015, and for about six months everyone expressed hope in the continuation of the general upturn. And then, some cog in the machine got jammed and the race was stopped, quite abruptly, in the second six-month period.

Smaller orders, lower sales than expected, unpredictable foreign markets, what with the Brexit and general international tension, ever-changing trade fair schedules and the election of Trump as the “cherry on top” of a truly astonishing 2016. As for the Brexit, the effects are still too soon to judge: the markets revolving around the Pound have shown neither positive nor negative signs so far. The London Textile Fair, which will be attending for the second year in a row to monitor the London market of young and up-and-coming brands that offers an interesting outlet for Italian fabrics, may provide a good testing ground.

We had a talk with some of the leading figures of the textile-clothing industry, at both the entrepreneurial and administration level, asking them to help us understand in what direction the industry is heading, with all that is waiting ahead: the first Milano Unica show being held in July rather than in September, the renewed “challenge” between Italian and French trade shows, more possible take-overs of Italian brands and companies by foreign groups (another hallmark of 2016) and a change in demand, with technical fabrics rising to the top in terms of sales and turnovers.

2017 is also the year La Spola celebrates its twentieth birthday: our first issue (in paper form back then) was released in November 1997. Very pleased to still be here, we want to welcome you into the new international textile trade fair year with Showcase number 160.

Un anno fa in pochi avrebbero scommesso su un 2017 di rilancio per il tessile-abbigliamento italiano. Il 2016 era infatti iniziato con la positiva eredità ricevuta dal 2015 e per sei mesi o poco meno ha fatto sperare in un prosieguo del trend di crescita; poi invece qualche ingranaggio si è inceppato e la corsa si è interrotta, abbastanza bruscamente, nel secondo semestre.

Ordini non più così ingenti, fatturati con una crescita minore del previsto, mercati esteri ancora meno interpretabili, tra Brexit e tensioni internazionali, e calendari fieristici in continuo mutamento hanno rimescolato tutte le carte, con l’elezione di Trump a chiudere il cerchio per un 2016 davvero sorprendente. Per quanto riguarda la Brexit gli effetti sono tutti da valutare: i mercati che ruotano intorno alla sterlina non hanno dato particolari segnali né in positivo né in negativo e un buon banco di prova può essere la The London Textile Fair che seguiamo per la seconda edizione di fila per monitorare il mercato londinese dei brand emergenti e giovani, interessante valvola di sfogo per i tessuti italiani.

Ne parliamo con alcuni dei massimi esponenti del mondo del tessile-abbigliamento, sia a livello imprenditoriale che amministrativo, per capire direttamente dai vertici del settore la direzione da prendere in vista della prima edizione di Milano Unica a luglio anziché a settembre, della rinnovata ‘sfida’ di saloni tra l’Italia e la Francia, delle possibili nuove acquisizioni di brand e aziende da parte di gruppi stranieri (altra caratteristica del 2016 che ci ha salutati) e del mutamento delle richieste dei mercati, col tessile tecnico sempre più protagonista delle ascese in termini di vendite e fatturati. Col 2017 inizia anche l’anno in cui La Spola celebra i suoi primi venti anni: tanti ne saranno passati a novembre, mese esatto della prima uscita dell’allora rivista cartacea nel 1997. Felici di essere ancora qui vi accompagniamo con lo Showcase numero 160 in questo nuovo anno del tessile internazionale.

The discovery Alla scoperta dei nuovi calendari of new calendars

The 2017 textile trade show year can already be described as “historic”, for it is the year Milano Unica gives up September to Munich Fabric Start and Première Vision, with July being crammed with events, from Milano Unica (quite satisfied with the results of Prima) to Blossom PV, the London Textile Fair and the Preview of the Munich show.

However, in this Showcase issue, we will be dealing with the “classic” trade fair calendar, that is, Florence, Munich, Milan, Paris, and London which was held in early January and that we describe at length in a separate article.

The Pitti Filati show reaches the round figure of 80 with the 2018 spring/summer preview of knitwear yarn collections. The Research Space will revolve around the theme of The Passenger, “the journey, beyond the boundaries and roles of everyday life”.

The trio at the head of the exhibition and research project is made up, as usual, of artistic director Angelo Figus, knitwear expert Nicola Miller and Alessandro Moradei who is in charge of the setting. Knitclub gathers the companies capable of interpreting the technical and creative ideas of the show’s visitors, in order to encourage advanced integration of the whole textile chain, whereas Fashion at Work brings together the exhibitors that deal with style consulting, stitch and prototype development, printing on knits, knitting machinery, buttons and notions, trimmings, embroideries and appliqués, dyeing and finishing, trend carnets and style bureaus, color-coding systems and software for design and manufacturing.

Pitti Filati is held at the same time as Vintage Selection, whose 29th winter season show will be based on the Let’s dance! theme: a tribute to the disco dance of the eighties, which represented one of the greatest moments in the history of music and dancing and is Il 2017 delle fiere di settore è già a suo modo ‘storico’ perché è l’anno della rinuncia di Milano Unica a settembre, che rimarrà quindi appannaggio di Munich Fabric Start e Première Vision, e con un luglio che rischia di diventare l’oggetto dei desideri degli organizzatori, tra Milano Unica (che quindi archivia il test positivo di Prima), Blossom PV, la London Textile Fair e la Preview della stessa fiera bavarese.

Ma la tornata fieristica di cui ci occupiamo in questo numero di Showcase rientra nei canoni classici, con la solita scaletta Firenze, Monaco di Baviera, Milano e Parigi e con Londra che ha appena anticipato tutti a inizio gennaio, come raccontiamo in un articolo a parte.

Pitti Filati fa cifra tonda e arriva all’edizione numero 80 con l’anteprima primavera/estate 2018 dei filati da maglieria: lo spazio ricerca sarà improntato al tema The Passenger, “il viaggio, oltre i confini e i ruoli del quotidiano”.

Confermato il trio alla guida del progetto espositivo e di ricerca: Angelo Figus alla direzione artistica, l’esperta in maglieria Nicola Miller, e Alessandro Moradei responsabile dell’allestimento. Con Knitclub torna la selezione di aziende capaci di interpretare le volontà tecniche e creative dei visitatori del salone, per favorire un’avanzata integrazione di tutta la filiera, mentre Fashion at Work riunisce gli espositori impegnati in consulenze stilistiche, progettazione, stampa, macchinari, minuterie, accessori, applicazioni, tintorie e finissaggi, tendenze e bureaux de style, sistemi di codifica del colore, software per il disegno o la confezione.

Ovviamente non manca il binomio con la Vintage Selection, giunta all’edizione 29 con il tema “Let’s dance!”: un omaggio alla Disco Dance, che ha rappresentato una grandissima stagione della musica e della danza degli anni Ottanta e che si pone in stretto dialogo 8 fairs

Starting one day after and held simultaneously with Munich Fabric Start for two days is Milano Unica, which goes back to Rho for its 24th show, following the debut in September. We should expect some changes in the logistics of the show, since the plan of having all textile shows held at the same time failed in September, because of Lineapelle having second thoughts at the last moment. As a matter of fact, MICAM and Mipel will take place two weeks after Milano Unica and Lineapelle twenty days later.

The Italian textile show features about 450 exhibitors (figures are not official at time of print release, editor’s note) and is greatly encouraged by the successful results of both Prima and the September show, although the market did not confirm the positive trend con Pitti Dance Off, leitmotiv dei saloni invernali alla Fortezza da Basso di Firenze.

Preceduta di un giorno e sovrapposta per i due seguenti a Munich Fabric Start, che fa da trait d’union tra gennaio e febbraio, Milano Unica torna a Rho per la sua 24’ edizione e non mancheranno accorgimenti e razionalizzazioni nella logistica dopo il debutto dello scorso settembre: naufragato il tentativo di abbinare le varie fiere della filiera già in parte fallito a settembre per il ripensamento improvviso di Lineapelle. theMICAM e Mipel si terranno infatti due settimane dopo Milano Unica, Lineapelle addirittura venti giorni dopo.

And the choice of holding the summer show in July rather than in September, besides putting an end to the never officially declared war for European supremacy, produced a domino effect that affects Filo as well. This show will be held in Milan on February 22 and 23 and will close the trade fair winter season which, up to a few years ago, ended in March. Palazzo delle Stelline is fully booked up, with South Korea as the country-market analyzed during the debate traditionally held on the first day of the show.

Première Vision keeps going its own way. The French textile show gave notice of its current and future timetable in advance, with the usual February-September schedule. One of the latest developments of the winter show, taking place on February 7-9, is the Wearable Lab, which brings together accessories, fabrics and leather in a project devoted to idea and innovations, with the showcasing in Hall 5 of seven experimental works (none of them is Italian) and a showroom presenting 4 start-ups (with France and Germany taking the lion’s share again).

Among Première Vision’s hallmarks are, as usual, big figures, perfect organization and the charm of Paris despite the fear of terrorist attacks. Equally appealing and held on the same days as Première Vision are the shows of Messe Frankfurt: Texworld, Apparel Soucing, Avanprint, Avantex and Shawls and Scarves, the super-poker of Le Bourget. The exhibitors-customers’ target is always the same, very East-oriented, with Asia as the star and Africa following closely behind.

Let’s jump a few months ahead to May (3, 4 and 5) with Proposte, the furnishing fabrics fair, which in Cernobbio, at Villa Erba, to be precise, will celebrate its 25th anniversary.

a confermare le ottime indicazioni ricevute sia a Prima che a settembre anche se poi il mercato non ha confermato quanto di buono era emerso in fiera. E la scelta di luglio con la rinuncia a settembre per l’edizione estiva, oltre ad aver interrotto la mai ufficialmente dichiarata battaglia per la supremazia europea, ha innescato un effetto domino che riguarderà anche Filo, che riporterà Milano in scena il 22 e 23 febbraio, praticamente per la chiusura di un calendario che fino a pochi anni fa abbassava il sipario a marzo. Ormai abituale tutto esaurito al Palazzo delle Stelline, con la Corea del Sud come paese-mercato analizzato nell’ormai consueto dibattito del primo giorno.

Va avanti per la sua strada Première Vision, che con il consueto anticipo ha comunicato le date delle fiere attuali e future a non esce dal binario consolidato dell’abbinamento febbraio-settembre.

Per l’edizione del 7-9 febbraio una delle novità è il Wearable Lab che unirà accessori, tessuti e pelle in un progetto dedicato alle idee e alle innovazioni con esposizione nella hall 5 di sette lavori sperimentali (nessuno italiano) e una showroom di 4 start-up (anche in questo caso protagoniste Francia e Germania). Il resto sarà affidato ai grandi numeri, all’organizzazione sempre puntuale e allo charme che vanta ancora Parigi nonostante le paure degli ultimi tempi. Lo stesso appeal che faranno valere negli stessi giorni le fiere di Messe Frankfurt: Texworld, Apparel Soucing, Avanprint, Avantex e Shawls and Scarves, il super-poker di Le Bourget. Il target espositori-clienti è sempre lo stesso, improntato ad Oriente, con l’Asia assoluta protagonista insieme ad un po’ di Africa. Infine un salto in avanti di qualche mese per arrivare a maggio (3, 4 e 5), con Proposte che a Cernobbio festeggerà le nozze d’argento con la 25’ edizione del salone per i tessuti da interni che si tiene a Villa Erba.

In the name Carlo Piacenza, nel segno della continuità of continuity di Elisa Signorini

Carlo Piacenza has been the president of Biella’s Association of Industrialists since July 4, 2016. Therefore, he is a privileged observer of a textile district which is known worldwide for the quality of its fabrics. On the eve of Pitti Filati, La Spola asked him a few questions.

First of all, what is the condition of the Biella district?

The crisis affected the Biella industrial district too, causing it to lose a great number of businesses. However, it “held out” by increasing product quality, continuing to invest and relying on international markets. In 2015, exports value reached 1.7 billion, with a 6,6% increase as compared to the previous year, which is above national average. This proves that fighting entrepreneurial spirit runs in our DNA. You are in the early stage of your mandate: what priorities have you identified that you want to pursue as president? And what degree of continuity have you retained with the policies of your predecessor, Bolli?

I made it clear from the outset that my team and I would have extended the policies of my predecessor, Marilena Bolli, in the name of continuity. “Biella is in transition” this is the assumption that has been influencing the Association’s strategies and responsibilities towards the local community in the past few years. It is a process that we intend to develop further, trying to achieve the goals that represent concrete opportunities for the area: from the support to businesses willing to invest in innovation and internationalization to projects aimed at relaunching the cities’ historic center, from the improvement in infrastructural links to the creation of digital tools and the promotion of our cultural heritage and values. The “Biella in Transition” project has gathered great support, with a Dal 4 luglio 2016 Carlo Piacenza è presidente dell’Unione Industriale Biellese, ha pertanto un ruolo di osservatore privilegiato su un distretto che produce tessuti la cui eccellenza è riconosciuta in tutto il mondo. Alla vigilia di Pitti Filati La Spola gli rivolge alcune domande.

Innanzitutto ci dica qual è lo stato di salute del distretto biellese.

In seguito alla crisi, anche il distretto industriale biellese ha perso molte imprese, comunque, ‘ha tenuto’, alzando il livello qualitativo, continuando a investire e puntando sui mercati internazionali. Un dato su tutti certifica la voglia e la capacità di fare impresa che sono nel nostro Dna: nel 2015 il valore dell'export è stato di 1,7 miliardi, con un incremento del 6,6% sull'anno precedente, superiore alla media nazionale.

E’ ancora all’inizio del suo mandato: quali sono le novità che lo stanno caratterizzando e quali priorità si è posto? Quali invece le maggiori linee di continuità con la presidenza Bolli?

Fin dal mio insediamento, ho detto che avrei operato, assieme alla mia squadra, nel segno della continuità seguendo la linea che il mio predecessore, Marilena Bolli, ha saputo tracciare in questi anni complessi. ‘Biella è in Transizione’: questo è il dato che negli ultimi anni ha influito sulle strategie e sulla rinnovata assunzione di responsabilità che l'Uib ha deciso di mettere in atto per il territorio. È un processo che continueremo a sviluppare, cercando di raggiungere quei traguardi che rappresentano opportunità concrete per il territorio: dal sostegno alle imprese che vogliono investire in innovazione e internazionalizzazione alle idee di rilancio del centro storico della città, dal miglioramento dei collegamenti infrastrutturali alla creazione di strumenti digitali, dalla valorizzazione del patrimonio turistico alla promozione dei valori culturali ad esso strettamente legati. Sui vari capitoli di Biella in Transizione è stato possibile raccogliere complessivamente, ad oggi, 300 milioni di investimenti da parte di soggetti privati.

Another central theme of my mandate, which aligns with the past president’s vision, is the protection and promotion of the Made in Italy. Furthermore, the Association has a number of goals it is working toward accomplishing: help our businesses grow in terms of both volume and quality and take action to promote training programs, the “sustainable” Made in Italy and the whole textile chain. I believe that it is important to intensify the collaboration between schools and the business world, by matching the businesses’ needs with training programs carried out by schools. I also believe that it is crucial to rely on the textile chain as a key to the production system’s higher competitiveness. The textile chain is a key element in the system and I think that it is very important to promote integration within the chain itself, between the upstream and downstream sectors, in order to strengthen the identity of our manufacturing industry.

Let’s talk about Biella’s entrepreneurs and their approach to the market: what main changes, for the better or worse, have you noticed lately?

Biella’s textile industry is made up of mostly small and very small-sized companies. Today, more than yesterday, it is very important to “join forces” in order to meet the challenges of globalization and competition and face the difficult economic situation we are going through. This is the path that local (and Italian) entrepreneurs should follow, by realizing that we have to promote the “wellmade, beautiful and sustainable”, in order to maintain our preeminent position in international markets. On other hand, we have some knotty problems to resolve, which affect entrepreneurial activity on both the national level, with bureaucracy and the pressure of taxation causing our businesses to be less competitive than those of other countries, and international level, where the big Made in Italy. C'è, poi, tutta una serie di obiettivi che l'Unione si propone di perseguire: far crescere qualitativamente e quantitativamente le nostre imprese, puntare sulla formazione, valorizzare il “made in sostenibile” e promuovere la filiera. E' inoltre mia convinzione che la strada giusta sia rendere ancora più stretto il dialogo fra mondo della scuola e mondo del lavoro, cercando di sincronizzare le esigenze delle imprese con la definizione dei percorsi formativi messi a punto dalla scuola. Credo anche che sia fondamentale puntare sulle filiere produttive per trainare il sistema produttivo su più alti livelli di competitività. La filiera è un tassello prezioso e sono convinto che sia indispensabile l'integrazione anche all'interno di essa, fra i settori a monte e quelli a valle, per rafforzare ancora di più l'identità del nostro manifatturiero.

Parliamo dell’imprenditoria biellese e del suo approccio al mercato: quali sono i maggiori cambiamenti, in meglio e in peggio, che ha potuto vedere?

Il tessuto industriale biellese è composto soprattutto da aziende di piccole e piccolissime dimensioni. Oggi, più che in passato, di fronte alle spinte della globalizzazione e per poter meglio contrastare la concorrenza e il momento congiunturale non certo favorevole, occorre “fare sistema”.

E' questa la direzione che l'imprenditoria locale (e italiana) deve continuare a seguire, nella consapevolezza che solo valorizzando ciò che è bello, ben fatto e sostenibile sarà possibile continuare presidiare il gotha dei mercati internazionali.

D'altronde restano tanti i nodi da sciogliere, che condizionano l'attività imprenditoriale, sia sul piano nazionale, dove l'eccessiva burocrazia e il livello di pressione fiscale hanno finito per creare un gap competitivo con gli altri Paesi, sia in ambito internazionale, dove si tratterà soprattutto di capire come si muoverà il nuovo presidente americano, la cui politica commerciale sembrerebbe improntata al protezionismo.

Da segnalare, in positivo, che la manovra di bilancio per il 2017 varata dal Governo prevede tutta una serie di esenzioni, incentivi e agevolazioni

Carlo Calenda at Pitti Uomo Opening Ceremony question is how Trump’s protectionism will be implemented and what it will mean for the rest of the world. Among the good news is that the 2017 government budget balance includes a number of exemptions, incentives and reductions for businesses. Another positive sign is the strategy adopted by Minister Calenda with his national “Industry 4.0” plan.

What is your opinion about young entrepreneurs in Biella, in particular, in the textile industry? Does this sector still appeal to young people?

There are a lot of young entrepreneurs who are really passionate about their job. We see it every day within the Association’s Young Division, which celebrated its fiftieth anniversary last year: the new generation is full of creativity, spirit of enterprise and resourcefulness.

Despite the difficult times, they don’t ask for financial support or facilitations, they simply want to be able to work without being strangled by tax burdens and bureaucratic regulations that are a waste of time and money. In the Biella area, there is a renaissance of young entrepreneurs, as shown by the number of start-ups in the textile field: a total of 42.

Our last question: there is a tendency among institutions to amalgamate. Is there a chance Biella’s Association of industrialists will be heading in that direction?

As I said, I strongly believe in the power of “joining forces”. Even in the case of Confindustria’s local associations, uniting means increasing the weight of our representatives and the structures’ efficiency. However, we have to discuss the modes: I agree with the “regionalization” model which our region, Piemonte, is striving to achieve step by step, starting with the areas willing to embrace the change that is inevitable. per chi fa impresa. Un altro segnale positivo è arrivato dalla linea strategica adottata dal ministro Calenda e dal suo piano nazionale “Industria 4.0”.

Come vede l’imprenditoria giovanile a Biella e nel tessile in particolare? E’ ancora un settore che ha un suo appeal?

Ci sono tanti giovani imprenditori che hanno voglia di darsi da fare. Lo vediamo tutti i giorni nell'ambito del Gruppo Giovani Uib, che proprio lo scorso anno ha tagliato il traguardo dei cinquant'anni: le nuove leve hanno creatività, spirito d'iniziativa e intraprendenza. Nonostante i tempi difficili, non vogliono aiuti economici o agevolazioni particolari, chiedono semplicemente di essere messe nella condizione di poter lavorare lavorare, senza essere “strangolate” da un'eccessiva imposizione fiscale e senza quella mole di pratiche burocratiche che comporta un dispendio di tempo e di denaro. Nel Biellese si assiste a una rinascita dell'imprenditoria giovanile. Lo attesta il numero delle start-up avviate e presenti anche nel settore tessile: sono 42 in totale.

Infine: tra le istituzioni c’è una grande tendenza agli accorpamenti: anche l’Unione Industriale Biellese potrebbe andare in questa direzione?

Ribadisco che credo profondamente nella forza di “fare sistema”.

Anche nel caso delle territoriali di Confindustria “mettersi insieme” aumenta il peso della rappresentanza ed incrementa l'efficacia delle strutture.

Il tema, però, sono le modalità: auspico un modello di “regionalizzazione” sul quale anche il nostro Piemonte si sta muovendo magari per step, partendo da quelle territoriali più disponibili di altre a sperimentare un cambiamento che è inevitabile.

Filpucci is about to celebrate a landmark birthday: 50 years of activity in the production of high-end and creative knitwear yarns.

A glorious past behind it and a future rich in promise ahead, with the handover of the business to the younger generation already achieved and a well-tested management team. The president and founder of the company Leandro Gualtieri, alongside Giuliano Coppini (with whom he founded Lineapiù), is a legendary name in the yarn manufacturing business, a name that from Prato has travelled the world, along with his innovative and sustainable yarns, which are very popular with the world’s greatest fashion designers.

An important anniversary: how do you plan to celebrate it?

We are working on a book that is not meant to be self-praising, but rather a source of inspiration for the future. It gathers our most emblematic threads: I think can say without false modesty that they can be described as milestones because of the innovation, of both product and processing, that we brought to the industry. I hope this book will be inspirational for young people.

How has the textile industry changed over the past few years?

Fashion is a fast-changing industry, and there is no doubt that there has been a considerable acceleration of speed in the past few years.

Customers are the first to investigate solutions to deal with global competition, concerning retail, online sales and recession stages. Of course, we are dependent upon their choices. For the time being, there has been a fragmentation of the collections: the Zara method is becoming increasingly popular even among those who work in the high-end market.

Of course this has repercussions on your company’s strategies.

Yes, absolutely, this way of working involves small orders that are fast and easy to fill. Unfortunately, this way of working, besides requiring a well-structured and organized company, sends up costs because the plants’ efficiency is reduced, which is something that E’ un anniversario importante, quello della Filpucci, 50 anni di attività nella produzione di filati creativi di alta gamma da maglieria: un passato importante alle spalle e un futuro ricco di promesse davanti, con un passaggio generazionale già compiuto e un management collaudato. Presidente e fondatore Leandro Gualtieri, che insieme a Giuliano Coppini (con cui per altro fondò Lineapiù), è un nome mitico della filatura internazionale, un nome che da Prato è arrivato nelle griffe di tutto il mondo, insieme ai suoi filati, ricercato dai maggiori stilisti e produttore di filati assolutamente innovativi, con una grande attenzione alla sostenibilità.

Un anniversario importante: come sarà sottolineato?

Stiamo lavorando alla realizzazione di un libro che non sarà autocelebrativo ma che vuole essere fonte di ispirazione per il futuro. Raccoglierà i fili più emblematici che abbiamo realizzato: senza falsa modestia dico che alcuni sono stati delle pietre miliari del settore per le innovazioni, sia di prodotto che di processo, che abbiamo introdotto. Spero che questo lavoro possa essere fonte di ispirazione per i giovani.

Com’è cambiato il settore tessile in questi anni?

La moda è continuo cambiamento, è indubbio però che negli ultimi anni c’è stata un’accelerazione notevole. I clienti per primi cercano delle soluzioni per organizzarsi al meglio in questa competizione globale, in merito al retail, alle vendite on line, alle fasi di recessione. Ovviamente dalle loro scelte dipendiamo anche noi. Per ora l’effetto principale che viviamo è quello della frammentazione delle collezioni: il metodo Zara si sta affermando come una strada da seguire anche per chi lavora nell’alta gamma.

Ovviamente questo ha le sue ripercussioni sulla vostra organizzazione aziendale.

Assolutamente, dato che questo modo di lavorare comporta ordini piccoli e veloci da evadere. Purtroppo questo modo di lavorare, oltre a richiedere un’azienda strutturata e fortemente organizzata, fa lievitare anche i costi perché non consente la migliore efficienza degli impianti. interviews 19

affects the whole textile chain. Just think about dyeing mills, which have to use small tanks to dye small quantities. As a consequence, we all have to reorganize our system to produce at lower costs without sacrificing quality nor raw materials and processing stages. To us, this is a must, but it is not always shared by other brands, which rely more on the logo than on quality.

How do consumers react to these two different approaches?

Well, relying only the brand name is definitely not a successful strategy nowadays. Consumers are mature and careful about their spending. Today, luxury is not about brand names, but about the processing, quality and creativity behind a product.

In Prato, but also in Biella, investors and foreign groups are shopping for textile companies. Has Filpucci received any purchase enquiry or request for business partnership?

No, Filpucci is not being “courted” by anyone right now. Actually, the yarn manufacturing business is less appealing to potential investors than textile companies are. The image is not that recognizable. However, as far as we are concerned, I am proud to say that I have seen garments made with our yarns with our label inside all over the world. Such a visibility is very important to us and very rewarding.

How has Prato changed?

I must regretfully admit that in Prato the textile chain has nearly disappeared. We ourselves had to invest in machinery required for certain processing stages which were carried out by other companies of the district up to a few years ago. We are nearly a full-cycle company. This has serious disadvantages: such a situation leads to less flexibility and to a loss of skills and knowledge within the district.

A catena questo si riverbera a valle della filiera: pensi solo alla tintoria che sarà costretta a tingere in vasche piccole. La conseguenza è che dovremmo tutti organizzarci per produrre a costi più bassi, pur senza sacrificare la qualità né delle materie prime né delle lavorazioni.

Questo resta per noi un must, non sempre condiviso da tutte le griffe, alcune delle quali preferiscono far leva sul logo anziché sulla qualità.

Come si pone il consumatore di fronte a questi due diversi approcci?

Certamente oggi fare leva solo sul marchio non è una scelta vincente: il compratore è maturo, attento. Oggi il lusso non è il marchio, ma la lavorazione, la qualità, la creatività che stanno dietro al prodotto.

A Prato, ma anche a Biella, investitori e aziende straniere hanno fatto shopping nel settore tessile, Filpucci ha ricevuto qualche richiesta di acquisto o ingresso in partecipazione dell’azienda?

Filpucci non ha al momento nessun ‘corteggiatore’, del resto il settore dei filati ha meno appeal di quello dei tessuti sul mercato delle imprese: non c’è una immagine così riconoscibile. Per quanto ci riguarda, però, sono orgoglioso di dire che in molte parti del mondo ho trovato abiti realizzati con nostri filati con dentro la nostra etichetta. Questa visibilità è importante e motivo di grande soddisfazione.

Infine, com’è cambiata Prato?

Dico con rammarico che a Prato purtroppo è quasi scomparsa la filiera: noi stessi abbiamo dovuto fare investimenti per acquistare i macchinari necessari a certe lavorazioni che prima facevamo fare fuori in aziende del distretto; siamo diventati un’azienda quasi a ciclo completo. Questo comporta minore elasticità, ma soprattutto comporta una perdita di competenze nel distretto, un patrimonio di conoscenze che si impoverisce.

The British market is a peculiar market: a few big fashion brands and a multitude of young and up-and-coming designers fresh from fashion schools from all over the world elbowing their way to success. And you might happen to see a textile trade show attended by former British first lady Samantha Cameron like a first-year fashion student, or by Vivienne Westwood’s stylists or by Victoria Beckham as an ordinary dressmaker or aspiring designer.

That is probably one of the reasons why the London Textile Fair’s otherwise composed and very business-like atmosphere is interrupted by theme parties, music and toasts. And the man in charge of the London Textile Fair, John Kelley, reflects all the characteristics of the show: a brilliant textile agent, an active staff coordinator busy from the early hours, but at 6 pm you’ll see him dressed up as Elvis Presley to join exhibitors and agents in a toast. He has a “double personality”, which- we have to admit- comes in handy to play down the difficult, uncertain times we are faced with. We met with Kelley at the end of the winter London Textile Fair and asked him, first of all, about his impression of the show: “My impression – he says – is that we’ve had the same number of visitors or slightly less as compared to previous shows, but higher quality, as I’ve been told by the exhibitors”.

Why should a textile manufacturer come to this show?

Because it is different from all the other shows. There are no stands here, only tables and racks for the samples. You can take a look, touch and examine the fabrics without having to walk into a stand. If you are interested in an item, you sit down and talk to the exhibitor. Otherwise, you go your way.

You have the chance to see from 30 to 40 collections in one day, not just a few collections like elsewhere. It is a very informal and low-cost trade show.

The change in the schedule of Milano Unica affected you directly. You were supposed to hold the show at the same time as Milano Unica, but you decided to postpone it for seven days.

Quello inglese è un mercato particolare: qualche grande brand della moda internazionale e una miriade di giovani e rampanti stilisti usciti dalle scuole di moda di tutto il mondo e pronti a sgomitare per ritagliarsi uno spazio sulla scena. Può capitare che un salone dedicato al tessile richiami l’ex first lady inglese Samantha Cameron come una studentessa di fashion alle prime armi, i responsabili stile di Vivienne Westwood e Victoria Beckham come un piccolo artigiano sarto o uno stilista emergente.

Forse è anche per questo che la London Textile Fair in alcuni momenti sembra una fiera estremamente seria e composta ed in altri, pur mantenendo la professionalità, si concede momenti ludici con feste a tema, musica e brindisi. E il suo organizzatore, John Kelley, ne rispecchia in pieno le caratteristiche: brillante rappresentante di tessuti, attivo coordinatore del suo staff fin dalle prime ore del mattino lo trovi poi alle 18 vestito da Elvis Presley a brindare con espositori e agenti. Una doppia personalità utile anche per sdrammatizzare i momenti difficili di un mercato comunque in fibrillazione, tra alti e bassi continui.

Incontriamo Kelley alla fine dell’edizione invernale della London Textile Fair e un primo bilancio è d’obbligo: “L’impressione – dice – è che ci siano stati più o meno i visitatori di sempre o qualcosa in meno ma a crescere è stata la qualità, come mi hanno confermato gli espositori”.

Perché un produttore di tessuto dovrebbe venire ad una fiera come questa?

Perché è diversa dalle altre. Qui non ci sono stand ma solo tavoli e stendini per i campioni. Il visitatore guarda, tocca, studia il tessuto senza l’obbligo di dover varcare la soglia di uno stand; se l’articolo interessa si siede al tavolo e parla con l’espositore, altrimenti tira dritto. In questo modo si riescono a vedere 30-40 collezioni in un giorno solo, non poche come altrove; è una fiera molto informale e dal costo basso.

La variazione di calendario di Milano Unica vi ha riguardati in modo diretto. A luglio avreste avuto la fiera in contemporanea e avete deciso di spostarvi sette giorni in avanti. interviews 27

That is why, last October, we combined Texfusion, the Oriental textile trade show, with the London Technical Textile Fair, with six exhibiting companies. In March, the exhibitors will be at least 25, if not twice as much…

London has always been a source of reference for the market. It is the birthplace of many of the styles that have made the history of fashion. Besides the designer brands, where can visitors find the most interesting things?

For sure at the Dover Street Market, where all the most creative young designers gather, but you can have a taste of the liveliness of London fashion at Camden Lock and Brick Lane too.

Our last question is inevitable. Your impression several months after the Brexit referendum.

We have got used to the idea by now and we keep going without shake-ups. Nothing has happened so far, it is quite impossible for the European Union to stop doing business with Great Britain. Germany has too many interests and trade going on here to sever all relations with us, Mercedes cars will keep being sold, as well as everything else. Perhaps the majority of English people didn’t put much thought into voting, but for the time being, nothing has changed.

Sì, la faremo il 19 e 20 luglio. Quando abbiamo saputo la data di Milano abbiamo chiesto la disponibilità al Business Design Centre e ci hanno concesso lo spostamento; la nuova data coincide con Première Vision New York e forse sarà un problema per gli studi di design ma non per i tessitori. Non potevamo fare altrimenti anche se nessuno ci ha forzati.

Una nuova svolta per voi potrebbe essere il tessuto tecnico?

Ci crediamo molto, d’altronde basta guardarsi in giro, agli angoli delle strade, per capire che il tessile tecnico è ovunque. In Inghilterra c’è tanto consumo, soprattutto per lo sportwear, ma anche per l’outdoor e il countrywear e così nello scorso ottobre abbiamo voluto abbinare a Texfusion, la fiera del tessile orientale, anche la London Technical Textile Fair, con sei aziende espositrici. A marzo saranno almeno 25 se non addirittura il doppio…

Londra è da sempre un punto di riferimento per la moda, qui sono stati lanciati stili che hanno fatto epoca. Chi viene qua, grandi brand a parte, dove può trovare le cose più interessanti?

Sicuramente al Dover Street Market, è lì che si concentrano con i loro stand i giovani designer più creativi, ma anche al Camden Lock e al Brick Lane si può vedere la vivacità della moda londinese.

Infine una domanda obbligatoria. Un’impressione sulla Brexit ad ormai molti mesi dal voto del referendum.

Ormai ci siamo ‘acclimatati’, abbiamo assuefatto la novità e andiamo avanti senza scossoni. Per ora non è successo nulla, è impossibile che l’Unione europea non lavori o non faccia affari con l’Inghilterra. La Germania ha troppi interessi e scambi commerciali qui per tagliare i ponti, le Mercedes continueranno ad essere vendute e così tutto il resto. Forse il voto è stato un po’ frettoloso e inconsapevole da parte della maggioranza degli inglesi ma, al momento, non ha cambiato nulla.

The Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex® certification for sustainable chemical textile products offers manufacturers of chemical products for the textile industry a restricted and independent method to reassure clients that their chemical products, dyes and auxiliary products and finishing agents are in line with the sustainability initiatives and requirements of the textile sector. Chemical products certified Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex® protect consumers, workers in the textile sector and the environment against the potential hazards of harmful substances. On 11 October 2016, in the presence of the Secretary General of the Oeko-Tex®, Georg Dieners, and the CEO of Centrocot (the only Italian institute recognized by the Oeko-Tex®), Grazia Cerini, the 100th Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex® Certificate was awarded to the Italian company Savarè.

Savaré. has been operating for 90 years in the high-tech specialty chemical products sector and since 1970 it has focused on the development and production of innovative hot-melt adhesives. With plants in Italy and the USA, Savaré is a leading supplier of hot-melt adhesives to the industry. The certification is the system of control and certification of chemical products, dyes and auxiliary products for the textile industry. An Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex® certified product can be used in the sustainable textile manufacturing chain for the creation of articles which have human-ecologically optimized characteristics. Savaré decided to raise its level of commitment to guaranteeing clients and final consumers a higher level of confidence. Eco Passport by Oeko-Tex® consists in a twostage control procedure at the end of which manufacturers of chemical products for the treatment of textiles are able to affirm that their products meet the criteria of sustainable textile manufacturing. Genius loci, a witness Genius loci, testimone della maestria to craftsmanship

A book that recounts, with images and words, the hard work of an area, but also the breaking down of the barriers represented by traditions and parishes, dialect and competition, differences and, sometimes, envy. Genius loci, the book published by Confindustria Toscana Nord is a graceful and elegant ode to an almost epochal place: Lucca, Pistoia and Prato coming together to create something bigger, more important, more effective in a constantly evolving and suffering market.

Andrea Cavicchi, Federica Landucci and Cristina Galeotti, industrial presidents of the three provinces, have guided the merger, which began in 2015 and became official in 2016. And to close the year of great change in the best way possible they entrusted the creation of a book to the photographer Dario Garofalo and the Gruppo Editoriale. The publication is important due to both its role and its content: photo shoots in the heart of the companies, in front of the machinery, side by side with the workers and employers, from great heights of the quarries and cranes to the holds of the boats under Un libro che racconta, con immagini e parole, la laboriosità di un territorio ma anche la caduta di steccati rappresentati da tradizione e campanili, vernacolo e concorrenza, differenze e, talvolta, invidie. Genius loci, il volume realizzato da Confindustria Toscana Nord è un inno garbato ed elegante ad una svolta quasi epocale: le associazioni di Lucca, Pistoia e Prato che si uniscono per creare qualcosa di più grande, più importante, più efficace in un mercato in continua evoluzione e sofferenza.

And in support of the images there are the words of journalists from the three provinces and experts in the ten sectors into which the industries have been divided: fashion system, metalworking, paper and paper products, services and tertiary, chemicals, plastics and pharmaceutical, construction, food, transport and logistics, marine.

Being able to grasp the soul and craftsmanship of Tuscan workers is the main merit of Garofalo, a photographer who, despite his young age, is stringing together prestigious collaborations in Italy and abroad: in this case he was able to capture the essence of the work without focusing on names, brands or particular connotations. The companies in fact offered to take part in the work completely anonymously because Genius loci is not a source of publicity but rather an innovative and striking way of telling others a story.

And to top it off there are statistics, processed by the Confindustria Toscana Nord research center, which explain the excellence of the work in terms of companies, employees and exports. industrie associate a Confindustria Toscana Nord: sistema moda, metalmeccanica, carta e cartotecnica, servizi e terziario, chimica, plastica e farmaceutica, edilizia, alimentari, trasporti e logistica, nautica. Firme che arrivano dai quotidiani toscani e nazionali o da riviste specializzate.

Saper cogliere l’anima e la maestria dei lavoratori toscani è il merito principale che è stato riconosciuto a Garofalo, un fotografo che, a dispetto della giovane età, sta inanellando collaborazioni prestigiose in Italia e all’estero: in questo caso ha saputo cogliere l’essenza del lavoro senza indugiare su nomi, brand o connotazioni particolari. Le aziende si sono infatti ‘prestate’ all’opera a titolo assolutamente anonimo, perché Genius loci non è un modo per farsi pubblicità ma piuttosto un veicolo innovativo e suggestivo per raccontarsi agli altri.

E per completare l’opera ci sono i numeri, elaborati dal Centro Studi di Confindustria Toscana Nord, che spiegano l’eccellenza del lavoro in termini di aziende, addetti e export.

At the outset of 2017, Lanificio Bisentino is ready to dive into the tight textile trade show schedule, as Giovanni Gramigni tell us.

Milano Unica held in July, does it affect your schedule?

Like many other Prato-based wool mills, we have been preparing our collections far in advance for several years now. We and our customers have already adjusted to the July schedule , so it’s not a big change for our company. However, this decision might affect negatively those who have not reset to the new schedule yet. I believe that it is an excellent chance for customers to be able to see the entire collections in July at such an important show as Milano Unica.

2016 was a year of ups and downs, but Lanificio Bisentino did not “tighten the reins”, on the contrary. Digital innovation, new stores downtown Prato and Pistoia.. What do you expect from 2017?

Like in the past few years, we expect to be on the rise. We believe that the trade world is evolving and nobody can take it easy. Lanificio Bisentino has a calendar full of things to do and complete for the next three years. In the wake of digital technology, concerning the direct connection with customers through our Web platform, we plan to improve our supply chain system in order to ensure higher customer satisfaction and product guarantee, certification and traceability. We hope that within the end of 2017 we will be able to present our archives promotion project. Our archives have grown in size and interest and we want to share them with our customers.

Brexit, Russia recovering, the US less brilliant than expected: are markets changing too or are your customers still the same?

For the time being, everything is unchanged, Russia’s signs of recovery make us hope well for the future, but we have to proceed with caution. We got less than what we expected from the United States, but we trust in 2017.

Il 2017 del Lanificio Bisentino inizia all’insegna del rispetto dei calendari fieristici, come conferma Giovanni Gramigni alla vigilia delle più importanti fiere di settore.

Milano Unica a luglio cambia qualcosa per la vostra tempistica?

L’orientamento, come quello di tanti altri lanifici pratesi, è già impostato da qualche anno ormai sul giocare di anticipo con le collezioni. Le tempistiche su luglio sono all'ordine del giorno per noi e i nostri clienti, quindi per la nostra organizzazione non cambia tanto. Però questa decisione potrà creare qualche scompiglio per chi ancora non aveva dovuto affrontare questa calendarizzazione. Per i clienti credo che sia un ottima chance quella di visionare collezioni complete a luglio in una manifestazione importante come è diventata Milano Unica.

Il 2016 è stato un anno altalenante ma il Lanificio Bisentino non ha tirato il freno, anzi. Innovazione digitale, store in centro a Prato e Pistoia... Il 2017 come si prospetta?

In maniera non diversa da tutti gli anni recenti e a venire, in salita. Siamo convinti che il mondo del commercio sia in evoluzione e che non sia possibile adagiarsi. Il Lanificio per i prossimi tre anni ha già un calendario ricco di attività e novità da ultimare. Sulla scia della novità digitale, riguardante la connessione diretta con i clienti tramite la nostra piattaforma web, migliorreremo il nostro sistema di supply chain per orientare ancor più il nostro lavoro alla soddisfazione del cliente e alla garanzia, certificazione e tracciabilità dei prodotti. Speriamo in tutto il 2017 di presentare il progetto di valorizzazione del nostro archivio che, diventato di notevole interesse e grandezza, abbiamo voglia di condividere con i clienti.

Brexit, Russia in leggera ripresa, Usa meno brillanti del previsto: cambiano anche i mercati o per voi i clienti sono gli stessi?

E' tutto invariato, i segnali di ripresa della Russia ci fanno ben presagire per il futuro, ma la cautela è di rigore. Per gli Usa la speranza era molto superiore a quelli che poi sono stati i risultati, ma confidiamo nel 2017. focus 39

History, the Materia museum Storia, ‘Materia’ di insegnamento al museo

The name itself tells you something about it: Materia, the acronym for Museo di Arte, Tintoria, Energie Rinnovabili e Ambiente (Museum of Art, Dyeing, Renewable Energies and Environment). It is the museum located in Cantagallo, near Prato, next to Gruppo Colle: a training, information, history and solidarity project achieved by converting an old farmhouse into a multipurpose center where visitors can learn about the history of textile processing in the Prato area, the importance of water power, as well as that of environmental protection and use of sustainable and renewable energy.

After barely a year into full operation, the museum has already hosted a series of conferences and exhibitions, not all necessarily textile-related but useful all the same in allowing people with the most diverse interests- from railway model-making to vintage cars, from hydroelectric energy to blanket labels- to interact within Materia. The tour of the museum begins outside, with the visit to the margone (a canal) containing an old 1924 turbine, to other historic Italian and foreign turbines and the so-called inferno (an interesting underground hollow for the containment of water) dating back to 1450. Visitors go back to modern times inside the museum, where screens show the various hydroelectric processes, the situation of the Bisenzio Valley and the way Materia works. The museum is completely independent from fossil fuels: electricity is provided by a photovoltaic system and hydroelectric turbine, while heating is provided by the passage of waste from the adjoining dyeing mill.

The museum was established by a leading company in the renewable energy field H2E, with the cooperation of Gruppo Colle and the Austrian Andritz Group, a global supplier of hydropower equipment. Tickets cost € 4 for elementary school children, € 5 for junior high school children, € 6 for high school visitors and € 10 for adults. All proceeds go to the local non-profit institution Spes Docet, which helps children in difficulty. The museum’s program for the near future includes an exhibition showcasing historic vehicles and firemen’s clothing (in April) and a tour of the hydroelectric plants in Gamberame and Molino Rizzoni, near Bologna (in May).

Il nome è già di per sè un’indicazione: Materia, acronimo di Museo di Arte, Tintoria, Energie Rinnovabili e Ambiente. E’ il museo aperto a Cantagallo, in provincia di Prato, accanto al Gruppo Colle: progetto di formazione, informazione, storia e solidarietà trasformando un vecchio casolare in un centro per scoprire e imparare la storia della lavorazione tessile nella valle pratese, l’importanza della forza delle acque ma anche il rispetto dell’ambiente e delle energie sostenibili e rinnovabili.

Dopo neppure un anno di vita il museo polifunzionale ha visto già visto susseguirsi incontri a tema e mostre, non tutte necessariamente legate al tessile ma utili per far interagire all’interno di Materia persone con interessi tra i più disparati, dal modellismo ferroviario alle auto d’epoca, dall’energia idroelettrica alle etichette da coperte.

Il percorso museale inizia all’esterno, con la visita al margone (canale) con una vecchia turbina ristrutturata del 1924, altre turbine storiche italiane e straniere e il cosiddetto inferno (suggestiva cavità sotterranea di contenimento dell’acqua) del 1450. All’interno, invece, c’è l’epoca moderna, con schermi che mostrano i vari processi idroelettrici, che illustrano la situazione in Val di Bisenzio e tutti gli aspetti di Materia, che è completamente autonomo da energia da fonti fossili: l’elettricità arriva da un impianto fotovoltaico e da una turbina idroelettrica, mentre il riscaldamento è assicurato dal passaggio degli scarichi della confinante tintoria.

La creazione del museo è un vanto di una società del settore delle energie rinnovabili H2E, che lo ha realizzato insieme al Gruppo Colle e all’austriaca Andritz Group, leader nella produzione di turbine.

Il calendario delle visite, (il costo è di 4 euro per gli alunni delle elementari, 5 per quelli delle medie, 6 per quelli delle superiori e 10 per gli adulti con incassi interamente devoluti alla onlus pratese Spes Docet, che aiuta bambini in difficoltà), prevede nel prossimo futuro l’esposizione di mezzi storici ed abbigliamento dei pompieri (ad aprile) e le visite alle centrali idroelettriche a Gamberame e a Molino Rizzoni, nel Bolognese (a maggio).

When it gets impossible Quando è impossibile bloccare i listini a lungo to freeze prices for long Changeable markets, unstable foreign policies, fast-changing costs of raw materials: in such conditions, it’s hard to freeze prices for three months, let alone one year. On the eve of the winter textile trade shows, Giacinto Gelli, the owner of Fil-3, invites his Italian fellow entrepreneurs for the umpteenth time to join forces to make customers realize that the prices of yarns and fabrics are not known with certainty six, ten or twelve months in advance.

“There are too many uncertainties- says Gelli, at the outset of 2017- and we cannot expose ourselves to the risk of offering our customers prices that we might not be able to afford in a year’s time. For instance, we have no idea what impact Trump’s victory will have on the dollar rate: some market analysts say 0,90, others 1,40, even among the experts there is not complete agreement”. One of the main causes of price instability is the cost of raw materials: “The price of wool is increasing- explains the entrepreneur- silk has become very expensive, processing costs are higher, dyeing materials for one, and so it is impossible to freeze prices for a year, like we used to do ten years ago”.

The message is intended mostly for Pratese entrepreneurs: “We have to recognize- concludes Gelli- that we are all in the same boat and we cannot give in to the demands of one good customer who places an order according to a price list seen at Milano Unica and Première Vision months before. Trade shows are now held one after the other, so we have the time and chance to adjust the price lists according to our needs. In other districts or countries, price lists are adjusted for changes every fifteen days, if necessary”.

In the meantime, Fil-3 is pleased with the results of 2016, which are in step with those of 2015. Fancy, slub and tweed yarns did very well and the stock service contributed to keeping sales high.

Mercati volubili, politica internazionale mutevole, costo delle materie prime soggetto a cambiamenti continui: in queste condizioni bloccare un listino diventa un’impresa anche per un trimestre, figuriamoci per un anno. Ed alla vigilia delle fiere invernali di settore Giacinto Gelli, titolare di Fil-3, lancia l’ennesimo invito ai colleghi e agli imprenditori dei distretti tessili italiani: fare squadra per far capire ai clienti che non si possono sapere i prezzi di filati e tessuti con un anticipo di sei, dieci o dodici mesi.

“Ci sono troppe incognite – dice Gelli a 2017 appena iniziato – e non possiamo esporci troppo con il cliente finale garantendo prezzi che, magari, tra un anno sono impossibili da sostenere. Per esempio non sappiamo che effetto avrà il dollaro sui mercati dopo l’arrivo di Trump; alcuni analisti lo vedono a 0,90, altri a 1,40, c’è divisione anche tra gli esperti”. A incidere sull’instabilità dei prezzi c’è anche il costo delle materie prime: “La lana sta aumentando – spiega ancora l’imprenditore – la seta negli ultimi tempi ha raggiunto costi molto alti, le lavorazioni costano di più, basti pensare ai coloranti per le tintorie e quindi è impossibile fissare i listini per un anno come facevamo dieci anni fa”.

Il messaggio ha come destinatari principali gli imprenditori pratesi: “Bisogna capire – conclude Gelli – che siamo tutti sulla stessa barca e che non ci si può piegare di fronte al buon cliente di turno che basa l’ordine solo su un prezzo visto a Milano Unica e Première Vision tanti mesi prima.

Tra l’altro adesso le fiere sono una dietro l’altra e il modo per adeguare i listini c’è quindi usiamole per comunicare questa necessità, anche perché qualcuno, in altri distretti o altre nazioni, il listino lo cambia anche ogni 15 giorni”.

Intanto Fil-3 ha archiviato il 2016 con risultati in linea con il 2015, con ottime performance con i filati fantasia bottonati tweed ed anche il servizio di stock service ha contribuito a mantenere buono il fatturato.

Eating Mangiando con le stelle with the stars

Considering that the high-end and luxury area of the industry is a permanent source of reference for the companies attending the textile trade shows of Florence, Milan and Paris, we decided to rely on the number one restaurant guide, Michelin, for some advice for you on where to dine after the shows.

Here are the restaurants, city by city, which have been bestowed with one or more Michelin stars because of the quality of food and wine.

Florence boasts seven Michelin-starred restaurants, including the newest 2017 addition: La Leggenda dei Frati (Costa San Giorgio 6/A ), housed in the Museum of Villa Bardini. It offers gourmet dishes such as celeriac gnocchi, tonic water-flavored pumpkin, quail and truffle ragù sauce, and the quail served in two ways, the breast with spring onions and the leg with asparagus. The Borgo San Jacopo restaurant (Borgo San Jacopo 62) of the Lungarno Collection group, owned by the Ferragamo family, was awarded its first star in 2016. A great success marked by the arrival of Chef Peter Brunel. View over the Arno river and Ponte Vecchio, one of the must-tries is the potato spaghetti dish served with a sauce of zabaglione and Cinta Senese lard.

Three Michelin stars for Enoteca Pinchiorri (Via Ghibellina 87): the restaurant’s signature dishes include double ravioli with burrata cheese and guinea-fowl and pancetta-wrapped prawns with bean and farro soup. Its world-renowned wine cellar features over 400 labels. Il Palagio, the restaurant of Four Seasons Hotel Firenze (Borgo Pinti 99), was awarded its first star in 2011. The kitchen is run by Chef Vito Mollica, who suggests hand-rolled pici pasta with hare and tonka beans, roast scampi with topinambur cream, Spanish lard and hazelnut oil.

La Bottega del Buon Caffè (Lungarno Benvenuto Cellini 69/r), one Michelin star, uses ingredients coming straight from the restaurantowned farm in the Tuscan countryside. The must tries include foie gras-flavored crème brûlée, Tropea red onion ice-cream and pan brioche, and ravioli filled with smoked angler fish and mullet bottarga. Florence’s sixth Michelin-starred restaurant is Ora d’aria (Via dei Georgofili 11/r), one star since 2011: we recommend the roast étouffè pigeon with apple and puntarelle and the venison steak. Last but not least, the one-Michelin-starred Winter Garden by Caino (Piazza Ognissanti 1), the restaurant of the St. Regis Hotel, whose menu offers a mix of creative and traditional dishes.

In Milan, the 2017 Michelin guide recommends 17 restaurants, with some very interesting new additions. The one-star category includes: Joia (Via Panfilo Castaldi 18), Tano passami l’olio (Via Villoresi 16) and Vun (Via Silvio Pellico 3), which hints at Neapolitan influences.

The newcomers are Lume (Via Watt 37), housed in a building which is an example of industrial archeology and run by Luigi Taglienti, and Visto che la fascia alta e il lusso sono ancora un riferimento essenziale per le aziende che partecipano ai saloni tessili di Firenze, Milano e Parigi per i nostri consigli enogastronomici per il dopo fiera ci vogliamo affidare alla guida per eccellenza in fatto di cucina, la Michelin.

Andiamo quindi a vedere, città per città, quali sono i ristoranti che si possono fregiare di una o più stelle per la qualità di piatti e cantina.

A Firenze sono sette, con l’arrivo nel 2017 del La Leggenda dei Frati (Costa San Giorgio 6/A ), all'interno del complesso Museale di Villa Bardini. Offre piatti come gnocchi di sedano rapa, zucca all’acqua tonica, ragù espresso di quaglia e tartufo oppure quaglia, petto ai cipollotti e coscia agli asparagi. Nel 2016 invece ebbe la stella il ristorante Borgo San Jacopo (Borgo San Jacopo 62) del gruppo Lungarno Collection, proprietà della famiglia Ferragamo. Un grande successo in grande stile a un anno dall’arrivo dello chef trentino Peter Brunel. Vista su Arno e Ponte Vecchio, imperdibile lo spaghetto di patate condito con zabaione di uova e guanciale di cinta senese. Tre le stelle per l’Enoteca Pinchiorri (Via Ghibellina 87): i classici sono i ravioli doppi con burrata e faraona e i gamberoni avvolti nella pancetta con zuppa di fagioli e farro; in cantina oltre 400 etichette tra le prime al mondo. Una stella dal 2011 anche per il Palagio, il ristorante del Four Seasons Hotel Firenze (Borgo Pinti 99). Lo chef è Vito Mollica, che consiglia pici tirati a mano, lepre e fave di tonka, scampi arrostiti con crema di topinambur, guanciale iberico e olio alle nocciole. a Bottega del Buon Caffè (Lungarno Benvenuto Cellini 69/r), una stella, ha molti ingredienti che provengono dalla fattoria toscana di proprietà del ristorante. Tra i piatti da non perdere la Creme brûlée al Foie gras, gelato alla cipolla rossa di Tropea e pan brioche, e i ravioli di rana pescatrice affumicata e bottarga di muggine. Sesto stellato è il ristorante Ora d’aria (Via dei Georgofili 11/r), stella Michelin dal 2011: consigliati il piccione etouffè arrostito con mela e puntarelle e la bistecca di cervo. Infine la stella del Winter Garden by Caino (Piazza Ognissanti 1), ristorante del St. Regis Hotel, un mix di dinamismo e tradizione del territorio.

A Milano la guida 2017 ha scelto 17 locali, con alcune novità interessanti. Andando per ordine crescente di stella sono da segnalare il Joia (via Panfilo Castaldi 18), il Tano passami l’olio (via Villoresi 16) e il Vun (via Silvio Pellico 3), con tracce di cucina napoletana. Sempre con una stella anche l’esordiente nella guida Lume (via Watt 37), inserito in un contesto di archeologia industriale e con lo chef, Luigi Taglienti, e l’altro nuovo arrivato Felix Lo Basso (piazza Duomo 21, 5° piano) dello chef pugliese Felice Lo Basso. Anche un nome legato ai temi di Showcase, ovvero Armani, può festeggiare la presenza nella guida Michelin col suo ristorante in via Manzoni 31: tanti gli ospiti dello stilista che si fermano a mangiare lì per gustare sapori legati soprattutto al made in Italy.

One of Showcase’s favorite names, Armani, is mentioned in the Michelin guide for its restaurant on Via Manzoni: many of the fashion designer’s guests stop there to enjoy “Made in Italy” dishes. The two-star category includes Sadler (Via Ascanio Sforza), with view over the Navigli, Seta (Via Monte di Pietà), one of the new 2017 additions to the guide, Il luogo di Aimo e Nadia (Via Montecuccoli), the other newcomer Enrico Bartolini at the Mudec (Via Tortona), housed in the Museum of Cultures. Last but not least, Cracco (Via Victor Hugo), traditional Milanese cuisine with a contemporary twist. Those who want the very best table, should ask for the “table d'hôte", which accommodates up to four guests with view of the kitchen to watch the chef perform his magic!

Per salire a due stelle bisogna andare al Sadler (via Ascanio Sforza), affacciato su uno dei Navigli più periferici, al Seta (via Monte di Pietà), che debutta direttamente col doppio riconoscimento, a Il luogo di Aimo e Nadia (via Montecuccoli), all’altro debuttante Enrico Bartolini al Mudec (via Tortona), all'interno del Museo delle Culture. Chiude la lista Cracco (via Victor Hugo), il luogo dove probabilmente si trovano i migliori sapori della cucina tradizionale milanese reinterpretati in chiave contemporanea. Chi vuole il massimo può sperare di avere il "table d'hôte", un tavolo per un massimo di quattro persone dal quale si può vedere il lavoro in cucina.

Decisamente molto ampia la scelta a Parigi, che ha poco meno di cento ristoranti stellati. George V) o L'Atelier de Joël Robuchon – Étoile (133 av. des Champs-Élysées). Per provare la qualità di uno chef famoso e il fascino della storia c’è invece, a qualche decina di minuti di treno, Gordon Ramsay au Trianon alla reggia di Versailles.

La scelta tra i 68 ristoranti ad una stella è legata anche alla parte di Parigi in cui si alloggia o si vogliono incontrare i clienti. Prendendo un solo esempio per arrondissement e tralasciando sicuramente qualche ottima segnalazione possiamo ipotizzare un itinerario gastronomico tra La Dame de Pic (20 r. du Louvre, arr. 1), Le Céladon (15 r. Tintoria Silli, 2017 in leap Tintoria Silli, un 2017 di slancio

Documents conserved in Palazzo Datini in Prato, the archive of the ancient city, indicate that the Silli family already plied the trade of dyers in 1790. At the end of the 19th century, the artisan dye works of Giuseppe Silli, Renzo’s grandfather, were doing good business.

Alessandro Silli carried on with the tradition and managed to overcome the grave crises that struck the textile sector in 1922 and 1929, by means of intelligence and hard work. Renzo Silli’s moment came in 1943. He formed a one-man company and, despite the post-war difficulties, the company got off at a good pace. The company was soon a success thanks to the energy he invested, which grew its turnover. At the start of the 1960’s, the old factory on Via del Gelsomino was judged insufficient and a new factory was built at Via Galcianese no. 79, which opened in 1963 and still houses the dye works.

This year, 2016, has been full of news. After acquiring additional dyeing devices and new drying systems to expand the dyeing capacity, production now proceeds at full speed. The cones department has been doubled allowing the company to finish up to 150 quintals per day of cones and tops.

“We are satisfied,” says Giorgio Silli, “with the service we offer our customers and how we have begun to grow again over the past few months.

The professional qualifications of our technicians and the partial renewal of our structure make us a trustworthy and indispensable partner in our district and beyond.”

Tintoria Silli has done more than to invest just economic resources in its sector. Instead, it has courageously followed a hiring plan, a rarity at this point in history. “We have to start from a very complicated last quarter of 2016, perhaps one of the worst in recent years for the district.

We managed not to lose the market, but by 2017 we will have to hope for an improvement throughout the supply chain” is Silli’s conclusion.

Da documenti esistenti in Palazzo Datini a Prato, risulta che la famiglia Silli esercitasse già il mestiere del tintore nel 1790. Alla fine del 1800 era in piena attività la tintoria artigianale di Giuseppe Silli, nonno di Renzo. Nella stessa via continuò la tradizione Alessandro Silli, che riuscì a superare con intelligenza e duro lavoro le gravissime crisi che colpirono il tessile nel 1922 e nel 1929. Nel 1943 fu il momento di Renzo Silli: creò una sua ditta individuale e, malgrado le difficoltà del dopoguerra, l’azienda prese subito un notevole impulso. La ditta si affermò con rapidità grazie alle energie profuse che facevano aumentare il volume di affari. All’inizio degli anni ’60 il vecchio stabilimento in via del Gelsomino era ormai insufficiente e nel 1963 fu costruita la nuova fabbrica in via Galcianese 79, che ospita tutt’ora la tintoria.

Il 2016 è stato un anno pieno di novità. Dopo l’acquisto di altri apparecchi di tintura e di nuovi impianti di asciugatura per ampliare la capacità tintoriale è arrivato il momento della produzione a pieno ritmo; il reparto rocche è stato raddoppiato permettendo all’azienda di nobilitare fino a 150 quintali al giorno fra Rocche e Tops.

“Siamo soddisfatti – dice Giorgio Silli – per il servizio che stiamo offrendo ai nostri clienti e per quanto siamo tornati a crescere negli ultimi mesi; la professionalità dei nostri tecnici e la struttura parzialmente rinnovata ci rende un partner affidabile e indispensabile nel nostro distretto e non solo''.

La Tintoria Silli non si è limitata ad investire risorse economiche nel proprio settore, ma ha coraggiosamente portato avanti un piano di assunzioni, cosa assai rara in questo periodo storico. ''Dobbiamo ripartire da un ultimo quadrimestre del 2016 molto complicato, forse uno dei peggiori degli ultimi anni per il distretto. Noi siamo riusciti a non perdere mercato ma per il 2017 dovremo sperare in un miglioramento per tutta la filiera' conclude Silli. focus 49

Cambi: a finishing Cambi: una rifinizione sulla cresta dell’onda riding high Fulling, dyeing and finishing are the sectors in which the Cambi Luigi & C. srl., Prato historic company that has its roots in 1949, when the brothers Parisio and Luigi gave birth activity. The company over the years and industrial epochs Prato Industrial has changed shape and guides: in 1973 Luigi remains alone at the top and stays there until 2004, first joined and then replaced by the grandchildren and Silvia Sara and Sara's husband, Iacopo.

Today Cambi Luigi has about 100 employees, the shareholders hold management roles and at the same time operating, thus keeping the footprint of a family business.

As subcontractors, our interlocutor is not the final consumer, but another entrepreneur whose decisions we have to accept the fact that in recent years are essentially those of a great work fragmentation. "It's required great flexibility - continues Scuccimarra - because there are required machining of small quantities in very short times. Also required is a great skill, because the fabrics have more and more particular hands which require the use of increasingly complex products and processes. It serves great preparation, also for the required standards and the increasingly stringent standards with a view to respect for the consumer and the environment ".

Follatura, tintoria e finissaggio sono i settori in cui opera la Cambi Luigi & C. srl., storica azienda pratese che affonda le sue radici nel 1949, quando i fratelli Parisio e Luigi dettero vita all’attività. La società nel corso degli anni e delle 'ere' industriali pratesi ha cambiato forma e guide: nel 1973 Luigi resta da solo al vertice e vi rimane fino al 2004, prima affiancato e poi sostituito dalle nipoti Sara e Silvia e dal marito di Sara, Iacopo.

L’azienda ha da sempre manifestato grande attenzione all’ambiente, conseguendo certificazioni e rispettando stretti parametri, a partire dal sistema di abbattimento fumi di cui si è dotata negli anni ’70, fino all’installazione di un impianto fotovoltaico di quasi un mega in concomitanza dalla bonifica dell’amianto gli immobili di proprietà. Il target scelto è quello dell’alta qualità, in questo modo l’azienda è diventata partner di produttori che si muovono nel segmento più alto del mercato.

Oggi la Cambi Luigi conta circa 100 dipendenti, i soci ricoprono ruoli direttivi e al contempo operativi, mantenendo così l’impronta di azienda familiare.

“Più che la società, che rimane un’azienda a conduzione familiare con una spiccata vocazione all’alto di gamma – afferma Iacopo Scuccimarra – negli ultimi anni è fortemente cambiato il settore in cui lavoriamo. In quanto terzisti, il nostro interlocutore non è il consumatore finale, ma un altro imprenditore delle cui decisioni dobbiamo accettare gli effetti, che negli ultimi anni sono essenzialmente quelli di una grande frammentazione del lavoro. E’ stato faticoso, ma siamo riusciti ad adeguarci a questo sistema”.

Questo non significa che le cose sono facili: nonostante le dimensioni dell’azienda, è necessario un grande impegno per garantire i servizi richiesti.

“E’ necessaria oggi una grande elasticità - continua Scuccimarra – perché ci vengono richieste lavorazioni su piccole quantità in tempi molto brevi. Inoltre è richiesta una grande competenza, perché i tessuti hanno mani sempre più particolari che richiedono l’uso di prodotti e lavorazioni sempre più complesse. Serve grande preparazione, anche per il rispetto dei parametri e delle norme sempre più stringenti in un’ottica di rispetto del consumatore e dell’ambiente”.
