access to train stations to avert further risks, and Milan patrolled night and day by foot soldiers during the ITMA show.

International terrorism seems aligned with the textile/clothing trade fair schedule, by threatening the cities that host the major shows and, thus, exposing them to rising fear among tourists and business travelers. And yet, what better way to dispel the fear of violence from our hearts and prevent the terrorists from winning than by going on with our lives and traveling freely where we wish?

So, Showcase, as always in the past few years, has traveled to Florence, Milan, Paris and all the other cities to let our readers in on the new, positive and good going on there and on what the future holds.

In this issue, we rely on the words of a number of people whose job consists in looking ahead every day: Giusy Bettoni, the driving force behind Class and one of Italy’s greatest experts in the field of sustainable textile industry; Ercole Botto Poala, the newlyelected president of Milano Unica; Andrea Cavicchi, who replaced Stefano Ricci at the head of the Florence Center for Italian Fashion; and Guglielmo Olearo, the man in charge of the international Première Vision shows.

They help us understand where the current market stands, following a 2015 season with perhaps more lows than expected, but with some unexpected highs too.

2015 has gone, taking old trade shows with it and bringing new ones, paving the way for 2016, which will have to deal with a still difficult economic situation, with a forced slowdown in Russian economy and an inevitable one in Chinese growth (after years of economic boom).

This Showcase issue will take you into the new trade fair year and invites you to always believe in tomorrow, without surrendering to fear, whether it’s the “physical” fear of terrorism or the “instinctual” fear of market uncertainty.

Attentati messi in pratica a Parigi, altri sventati (pare) a Firenze, stazioni bloccate a Monaco di Baviera per evitare rischi e anche Milano controllata dall’esercito già nei giorni di ITMA. La linea del terrorismo internazionale sembra seguire il calendario delle fiere del tessile/ abbigliamento, toccando le città che ospitano i principali saloni europei e che per questo rischiano di pagare un dazio oneroso alla paura.

Ma è proprio scacciando i fantasmi e andando avanti a testa bassa che si può e si deve vincere il timore e isolare chi vuole obbligarci a subirlo e quindi Showcase, come è sempre stato negli ultimi anni, è a Firenze, Milano, Parigi e in tutte le altre città per raccontare il bello, l’eccellenza, il futuro.

In questo numero lo facciamo affidandoci alle parole di chi col futuro convive nel presente, ovvero Giusy Bettoni, anima di Class e massima esperta di tessile sostenibile; di chi ha raccolto un importante testimone nel recente passato e deve onorarlo nel presente, ovvero ercole Botto Poala, nuovo presidente di Milano Unica, e Andrea Cavicchi, che ha preso il posto di Stefano Ricci alla guida del Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana; di chi il futuro deve vederlo in anticipo, ovvero Guglielmo Olearo, responsabile dei saloni internazionali di Première Vision.

Nelle loro parole, ma non solo le loro, l’analisi del mercato attuale dopo un 2015 forse meno positivo del previsto ma anche portatore del segno più in settori dove da tempo si vivacchiava nella modestia. Un anno che se n’è andato cancellando fiere e portandone di nuove, aprendo la strada ad un 2016 che deve convivere con una situazione ancora difficile e con economie in rallentamento forzato (Russia) o forse inevitabile (Cina, dopo un boom durato molti anni). Questo numero di Showcase vi accompagna nel nuovo anno fieristico e vi invita a credere sempre nel domani, senza piegarsi alla paura, che sia quella ‘fisica’ del post attentati o quella ‘istintiva’ sui mercati.

Trade shows, a merry-go-round Saloni, una giostra che non si ferma mai that never stops

That of the trade shows is a world in a permanent state of ferment and this year, like never before, it is engaged in a flurry of novelties, cancellations, change of locations and dates, both useless and successful attempts. So, it may be useful to set things straight, not only about the shows we usually describe in Showcase, that is, Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, Filo and Première Vision, but also about the summer season that will bring further developments, some of which very interesting and not related to the textile/clothing industry.

Chronologically speaking, Pitti Filati is the first trade show of the season. It will be held, as usual, at Fortezza da Basso, Florence’s traditional location for trade fairs, which might undergo some changes in the near future, with Pitti Immagine joining other institutional subjects in the management of the structure ,the redistribution of partnership shares and Florence’s Chamber of Commerce making its entry beside Regione Toscana, Comune di Firenze and Città Metropolitana after the sale of several properties. Anyway, Pitti Filati number 78 is ready to go and introduce visitors to the best of Italian and European production. On show, the “world premiere” of the spring-summer 2017 knitwear yarn collections. The Research Space, which has been further developed, revolves around the Materiality theme, based on the concept of matter as the star of the creative revolution leading to a new way of seeing the world, and divided into ten sub-themes. The show’s artistic directors are fashion designer Angelo Figus and knitwear expert Nicola Miller, while the setting is designed by Alessandro Moradei.

Held at the same time but lasting two days longer (until January 31) is Vintage Selection, at Stazione Leopolda.

The February Milano Unica show might be the last one held at the Portello, according to rumors from various Milanese trade fair and Quello dei saloni è un mondo in continuo fermento e mai come negli ultimi anni si sono susseguite novità, cancellazioni, spostamenti di sedi o di date, tentativi falliti ed altri coronati dal successo. E’ quindi il caso di fare un po’ di chiarezza, non solo in vista dei saloni dei quali ci occupiamo di solito su Showcase, ovvero Pitti Filati, Milano Unica, Filo e Première Vision, m anche in previsione di un’estate che porterà ulteriori novità, talvolta curiose e non collegate al mondo del tessile/abbigliamento.

In ordine temporale è Pitti Filati a dare il via alla danze e in questo caso tutto si muove su binari già rodati ma in un contesto, la Fortezza da Basso, che nel prossimo futuro potrebbe mutare, con l’ingresso diretto di Pitti Immagine nella gestione della struttura insieme agli altri soggetti istituzionali o con la ridistribuzione delle quote e l’ingresso della Camera di Commercio di Firenze a fianco di Regione Toscana, Comune di Firenze e Città metropolitana dopo la vendita di diversi immobili. In ogni caso resta tutto confermato sul fronte dei saloni, con Pitti Filati numero 78 pronto a riportare a Firenze il meglio della produzione italiana e europea. In vetrina l’anteprima mondiale primavera-estate 2017 delle collezioni di filati per maglieria, mentre lo Spazio Ricerca, ulteriormente sviluppato, lancia il tema ‘Materiality’, col concetto di materia, protagonista della rivoluzione creativa da cui consegue un nuovo modo di intendere il mondo sviluppato in dieci i temi. La direzione artistica è del fashion designer Angelo Figus e dell’esperta in maglieria Nicola Miller e l’allestimento è firmato Alessandro Moradei. In contemporanea, ma con due giorni di svolgimento in più (fino al 31 gennaio) la Stazione Leopolda ospita Vintage Selection.

Quella di questo febbraio potrebbe essere l’ultima edizione di Milano Unica al Portello, stando ai rumors che arrivano dagli ambienti fieristici milanesi e dalle istituzioni. Ed anche osservando i movimenti che riguardano questa edizione, la numero 22, che non potrà utilizzare i padiglioni 1 e 2 e si sposterà verso il 5. institutional sources. Nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but it’s a good guess considering that this season’s fair, number 22, is moving from pavilions 1 and 2 to pavilion 5. So, most likely the September show will be held in Rho, as suggested by the vice-minister of economic development Carlo Calenda, who would be pleased to have all Italian fashion trade shows held in the same, modern and big space outside of Milan and nearly at the same time: Milano Unica (September 6-8) with Micam and Mipel (3-6) and Lineapelle (7-9).

In any case, just like Pitti Filati in Florence, Milano Unica is going its own way (it opened in 2016 in New York, following the successful debut in summer 2015), with the first show organized by Ercole Botto Poala, with whom we talk about the present and future of the show in this Showcase issue. After the successful 2015 results, the Milanese fair is moving forward to strengthen its position on the European scene, confident of the support of the country’s present government and highest offices.

It can hardly be denied that textile companies are looking forward to Texworld (alongside Apparel Sourcing and Avantex) and Première Vision with a mix of anticipation and apprehension. Paris has paid a heavy price for terrorism in the late 2015 and now the city seems enveloped in a halo of hope, mystery and tension, as it struggles not to be overwhelmed by fear. In November 2015, Tissu Premier, which kicked off immediately after the terroristic attacks, had to deal with some exhibitors and visitors cancelling their trip to Paris. The two February shows may not run this risk, but nothing is going to be the same anymore. And so, we hope that the fabrics, accessories and colors of Première Vision will shine more light on the Ville Lumière, while Texworld promotes the products and markets of far-away countries. richieste del governo, nella persona del viceministro allo sviluppo economico Carlo Calenda, che vede nello spazio espositivo più moderno, grande e decentrato il polo dei saloni della moda italiani , tutti concentrati insieme: Milano Unica (6-8 settembre) con Micam e Mipel (3-6) e Lineapelle (7-9). In ogni caso, così come Pitti Filati a Firenze, anche Milano Unica va avanti per la sua strada (iniziata per questo 2016 a New York, dopo il buon debutto della scorsa estate) con la prima edizione firmata Ercole Botto Poala, al quale Showcase dedica un’intervista per conoscere presente e futuro della manifestazione. Dopo i buoni riscontri del 2015 il salone milanese cerca conferme e prosegue la ‘scalata’ alle posizioni di vertice del panorama europeo forte del confermato appoggio del governo e delle istituzioni.

C’è curiosità e, inutile negarlo, anche un po’ di apprensione, nell’avvicinarsi a Texworld (con Apparel Sourcing e Avantex) e Première Vision. Parigi ha pagato un dazio altissimo al terrorismo proprio a fine 2015 ed ora sembra avvolta in un alone di speranza, mistero, tensione e voglia di non farsi schiacciare. A novembre Tissu premier, iniziata all’indomani degli attentati, ha dovuto registrare il forfait di alcuni espositori e visitatori: questo è un pericolo scongiurato per le due fiere di febbraio ma sicuramente niente sarà più come prima. E allora potrebbero essere proprio i tessuti, gli accessori ed i colori di Première Vision a portare ulteriore luce nella Ville Lumière, con Texworld in concomitanza a esaltare produzioni e mercati di latitudini più lontane.

Al Parc des Expositions ormai tutto è sotto l’emblema di PV Paris ed i ‘vecchi’ nomi dei singoli saloni sono sempre più consegnati alla storia, anche se le abitudini sono dure a morire. PVP è globalità d’offerta senza perdere le peculiarità ed ha aperto una strada che non dispiace né agli espositori della fiera parigina né a chi vorrebbe vedere qualcosa di simile anche in Italia, e non è detto che proprio la linea che porta a 10 fairs

The calendars of the exhibitions change year after year chasing new markets and customer needs, which require shorter times.

I calendari delle fiere cambiano anno dopo anno inseguendo i nuovi mercati e le esigenze dei clienti, che hanno bisogno di tempistiche più ristrette.

At the Parc des Expositions, all textile shows have gathered under the umbrella of PV Paris and the “old” names of the single trade fairs do not figure on the list anymore. PVP has gone global, though keeping focus on distinctive features, and has opened doors that all exhibitors seem to appreciate, both in Paris and in Italy, and Milano Unica moving to Rho could be pursued as part of this strategy.

In March, the number one event is Filo, the show that comes back to Italy after its first Chinese experience, one of the many novelties that the new year inherits from the old. The trade show, held at Palazzo delle Stelline, goes on pursuing a new identity and a new direction for the future and is one of the “privileged few” that can count on the government’s support in the promotion of its international image.

Munich Fabric Start has been the first show to adapt to the new trade fair schedule, but being held right before Milan and not early enough compared to Paris, it is “condemned” to be a point of reference only for the German-speaking area which, per se, is not necessarily a limitation. The results of the shows of the past few years have been variable, so expectations for 2016 are high. Heimtextil, which opened Frankfurt’s 2016 trade fair season, deserves a separate mention. Messe Frankfurt’s major event of the year is perhaps Techtextil in China, in October.

The July shows of Interfilière and Mode City are going back to the original location in Lyons, at the Eurexpo, not only because of a strategic choice by the show’s organizing committee, Eurovet, but mostly because of the 2016 UEFA European Championship finals: the trade shows will be held from July 9 to 11 and the final match in Paris on July 10. Which makes it difficult, if not impossible, to find hotel rooms in and outside of Paris. So, fabrics, lingerie and swimwear will have to move to make room for football.

Rho non rientri in questa strategia.

Toccherà a Filo animare il mese di marzo, con il salone che torna in Italia dopo la sua prima parentesi cinese, una delle tante novità che il 2016 prende in eredità dall’anno precedente. Al Palazzo delle Stelline un altro passo in avanti nel lancio della nuova identità della fiera, affezionata al passato ma da qualche edizione tornata a ingranare qualche marcia in più e finita nell’elite delle fiere appoggiate dal governo nel piano di internazionalizzazione.

Gli altri – Munich Fabric Start è stata la prima a adattare date e organizzazione ai nuovi calendari, sempre più volubili e concentrati, ma l’arrivare a ridosso di Milano e non abbastanza in anticipo rispetto a Parigi la ‘condanna’ a rimanere fiera di riferimento per un solo mercato, quello dell’area germanofona, anche se questo non è necessariamente un limite. Le ultime edizioni sono andate a corrente alternata e quindi c’è attesa per vedere cosa riserva il 2016.

Di Heimtextil, che ha aperto il 2016 di Francoforte scriviamo a parte: per Messe Frankfurt l’evento del nuovo anno è forse Techtextil in Cina, a ottobre.

La curiosità – Trasferimento forzato o quasi per Interfilière e Mode City di luglio, che torneranno nella sede originaria di Lione, all’Eurexpo, non tanto per una scelta strategica degli organizzatori di Eurovet quanto per evitare la concomitanza con la finale degli Europei di calcio: i saloni sono infatti in programma dal 9 all’11 luglio, la finale di Parigi il 10. Impossibile abbinare le due cose per la difficoltà di reperire camere negli hotel della capitale e dei dintorni e quindi tessuti, lingerie e swimwear lasceranno spazio al pallone. fairs 11

The home textiles market is not what it used to be, whether it’s a good or a bad thing. And even Heimtextil, Europe’s major home and contract textiles show, is a mirror of this change. The mid-January show had the highest attendance of any year and saw an increase in the number of Italian exhibitors, with several companies, which had given up taking part in the show for some years because of the global crisis, going back to Frankfurt.

2866 exhibitors, nearly 15 more in a year’s time, with visitors and exhibitors coming from all over the world, a turnover of € 3 million for Germany only, a bigger light shining on the whole city of Frankfurt and the marked development of specific sectors such as digital printing.

These are the distinguishing features of the show, which enjoys a new lease of life after having suffered from the consequences of the crisis, with a decrease in the number of exhibitors and less and less appeal to textile companies.

Messe Frankfurt can be pleased with the results of the show, which has also proven this area of industry’s liveliness, definitely higher than that of the “classic” textile industry, that is, clothing. The Theme Park, the exhibitors’ party with music and entertainment, made it clear.

While the show’s number of exhibitors has increased, its geographical representativeness has changed too and, unfortunately, to Italy’s detriment. Our country has slid from a leadership position to that of a follower (though having 152 companies on show), being surrounded by Chinese and Indian competitors that occupy entire pavilions and with Turkey strengthening its position on the world scene, as it offers a better price-quality deal than the Asians do. What still makes Italian companies successful is product quality and the skill in creating items that, because of their creativity and use of raw materials, cannot be copied by others. If global economy begins making a slow but steady recovery, the cost of raw materials will not have such an adverse impact on Italian companies anymore and they might be able to regain footing on the market, in both the contract and private customer service field.

Il mercato del tessile da arredamento non è quello di una volta, nel bene e nel male. Ed anche Heimtextil, la principale fiera del settore organizzata in Europa, è lo specchio di questo cambiamento: l'edizione di metà gennaio è stata quella con i numeri più alti da tanti anni a questa parte ed anche la partecipazione italiana è aumentata, forte del ritorno a Francoforte di aziende che avevano rinunciato alla presenza all'insorgere della crisi globale.

2866 espositori, quasi 15 in più nel giro di un anno, praticamente tutto il mondo rappresentato, tra visitatori e aziende, un giro di affari che riguarda solo in Germania, 3 miliardi di euro di fatturato, una visibilità estesa a tutta la città sulle rive del Meno e l'estensione decisa e convinta di segmenti come la stampa digitale: questi i dati principali della fiera, tornata quindi ad una seconda giovinezza dopo che anch'essa aveva accusato le ripercussioni della crisi con una calo di espositori e un appeal minore per le aziende.

Messe Frankfurt può mandare in archivio in modo positivo un salone atteso anche per testare la vitalità del settore, che per certi versi appare superiore a quella del tessile "classico", ovvero quello da abbigliamento: il Theme Park, la festa degli espositori con musica e allegria ne sono l'emblema. Ma se i numeri crescono in modo positivo la loro rappresentatività, almeno a livello geografico, è cambiata, un po' a discapito dell'Italia che da una posizione di leadership consolidata negli anni passati adesso si ritrova con numeri comunque buoni (152 aziende) ma circondata dallo strapotere asiatico con Cina e India monopolizzatrici di interi padiglioni e con la Turchia che si inserisce nello scenario mondiale con decisione in virtù di un rapporto qualità-prezzo migliore rispetto a quello degli orientali.

A salvare l'Italia, o meglio a farle mantenere un ruolo di primo piano, è ovviamente la qualità e la continua capacità a creare articoli che, per fantasia e materie prime, non sono copiabili dagli altri: se l'economia dovesse proseguire nella sua lenta ma costante risalita il costo al metro del tessuto non sarebbe più una discriminante primaria e le aziende italiane potrebbero riguadagnare ulteriore spazio sui mercati, sia nel contract che nella vendita ai consumatori privati.

The Milano Unica show number 22, which will be held from February 9 to 11 at Fieramilanocity, will be the first under the presidency of Ercole Botto Poala, who recently replaced Silvio Albini at the head of Italy’s major textile trade fair. The 44-year-old managing director of Lanificio Reda, a historic Biella-based company, inherited a still difficult situation and the hard task of supporting the sector in the adoption of new rules in view of the changed economic scenario.

While Milano Unica is “warming up the engine” before the official opening on February 9, while spinners gathered in Florence for Pitti Filati are testing the waters to see if the economic recovery is real, we asked Botto Poala a few questions, encouraged by the atmosphere of optimism that prevailed at Pitti Uomo and by the show’s positive results. As we are writing, figures show a 4% increase in attendance at the Fortezza.

Mr. Botto Poala, how will your presidency differ from that of your predecessor Albini and what programs/policies of his do you intend to continue?

My predecessor did a wonderful job of keeping Milano Unica going and growing in very difficult times from the economic point of view. He made Milano Unica recognized by all as a model worthy of emulation, offering companies lacking a solid organizational structure the chance to break into international markets in an ideal setting. Furthermore, he created a strategic and synergistic relationship with the current government and other textile shows. I intend to carry on from where he left off and help Milano Unica move up to bigger heights.

What do you feel is the most pressing issue affecting the textile industry at the moment?

I believe we will soon have to face major changes in our area of industry and shows such as MU, which showcase a range of fabric and accessory offerings

L’edizione numero 22 di Milano Unica sarà la prima da presidente di Ercole Botto Poala, che succede a Silvio Albini al vertice della maggiore fiera italiana di tessuti. Il 44enne amministratore delegato del Lanificio Reda, storica azienda biellese, riceve in dote una situazione non ancora semplice e l’arduo compito di sostenere il settore nel trovare nuove regole per gestire mutate situazioni economiche e commerciali. Mentre Milano Unica scalda i motori per l’inaugurazione del 9 febbraio, mentre i filatori riuniti a Firenze per Pitti Filati saggiano la tenuta dell’annunciata ripresa, poniamo alcune domande a Botto Poala, con l’ottimismo che deriva dalla buona atmosfera che si è respirata tra gli stand di Pitti Uomo, confortata dai positivi dati di chiusura: mentre questo giornale va in stampa si parla di incremento di almeno il 4% dei visitatori in Fortezza.

Inevitabile una domanda sulla continuità rispetto alla presidenza Albini: cosa intende portare avanti con convinzione e su cosa di nuovo, invece, si caratterizzerà il suo mandato.

Il mandato del mio predecessore è stato molto proficuo, ha preservato il ruolo di Milano Unica in anni difficilissimi dal punto di vista economico, ha reso MU una fiera internazionale riconosciuta da tutti come modello da seguire, dando in particolar modo alle aziende non strutturate la possibilità di affacciarsi sui mercati esteri in una cornice ideale. Ha, inoltre, avviato uno strategico rapporto sinergico con le istituzioni e le altre manifestazioni della filiera. Io intendo ovviamente portare avanti questo importante lavoro cercando di far sì che Milano Unica diventi sempre più un punto di riferimento degli addetti ai lavori e non solo.

Quale esigenza del settore si è affermata come più urgente all’inizio del suo mandato?

Credo che siamo di fronte a grandi cambiamenti nel nostro settore e una fiera come MU, che presenta un’offerta di tessuti e accessori che vedremo fra un anno o forse meno nei migliori negozi del mondo, deve obbligatoriamente guardare al futuro e quindi offrire ai suoi espositori e visitatori non solo il miglior servizio/ qualità che già offriamo, ma anche spunti di riflessione che possano aiutare gli addetti ai lavori a capire meglio quello che verrà.

that we will be seeing in a year’s time, or even less, at the world’s best shops, must look ahead and offer its exhibitors and visitors not only the best service/ quality possible, which we do already, but also the chance to learn what’s going to happen next.

Could you tell us what you think about the sector’s trend? There is some talk about recovery, backed up by the latest economic data, but the worldwide tension due to terrorism and the sharp drop in oil prices are sending us tumbling back into economic crisis. Does all this have repercussions on the textile industry?

As I said, we are living in a time of great changes. These changes are both macroeconomic and geopolitical, definitely bigger than us. They cause storminess in all economic areas, not only in ours. In my opinion, the end is still to come, so we will have to learn to adapt to strong oscillations, both negative and positive. This is certainly the less favorable scenario for the textile industry, and yet we have no choice but to respond positively and optimistically. Actually, every crisis represents an opportunity for someone. Our textile system, despite all its difficulties, has an advantage over the others. We have something that consumers all over the world want and love: the Made-in-Italy label.

Textile shows: Première Vision gave up a market and reassessed the importance of an event. What do you think about it?

In my opinion, Première Vision is an example worth following. They tried to look ahead by offering something different. If they gave up, it’s probably because it was too early or because the market did not develop or open up as expected, but they did well to try. As I said, a trade show must look ahead, and it doesn’t matter if it didn’t work out, at least they tried.

How is Milano Unica’s health?

Ci dia una sua opinione sull’andamento del settore: si parlava di ripresa, forti della conferma degli ultimi dati congiunturali, ora però la tensione mondiale dovuta agli attentati terroristici e il brusco abbassamento del prezzo del petrolio rendono di nuovo fragile l’economia mondiale. Tutto questo ha degli effetti sul settore tessile?

Viviamo in un periodo, come dicevo prima, di grandi cambiamenti. Questi cambiamenti sono macroeconomici e geopolitici, certamente molto più grandi di noi.

Creano forti turbolenze in tutti i settori dell’economia, non solo nel nostro. Non vedo al momento la fine, per cui, secondo me, dobbiamo saperci adattare a forti oscillazioni sia negative sia positive. Per l’industria è certamente lo scenario meno favorevole, ma non possiamo fare altro che affrontarlo in maniera positiva ed ottimistica. Ogni crisi in realtà offre sempre un’opportunità per qualcuno. Il nostro sistema tessile, pur con tutte le sue difficoltà, parte comunque in vantaggio rispetto a tutti gli altri. Noi abbiamo qualcosa che tutti i consumatori del mondo ci riconoscono, un’etichetta strategica: made in Italy!

Parliamo delle fiere. Première Vision ha abbandonato un mercato e ridimensionato un appuntamento: cosa ne pensa?

Première Vision è secondo me un bell’esempio da seguire. Loro hanno provato, hanno cercato di proporre qualcosa guardando al futuro, se lo hanno poi abbandonato è perché forse sono partiti troppo presto o forse perché il mercato non si è sviluppato o non si è aperto come ci si aspettava, ma secondo me hanno fatto bene a provarci. E come dicevo prima una fiera deve guardare avanti, se poi non funziona non importa, almeno si è provato.

In che condizioni di salute si trova Milano Unica?

Milano Unica è in ottima salute, addirittura meglio di quello che io percepivo da semplice espositore. Se si pensa che oggi è una delle poche fiere chiamate a

Milano Unica is in good health, even in better health than it appeared to me as an exhibitor. Milano Unica is one of the few shows which has been asked to join the Round Table of Fashion promoted by Vice-Minister Calenda and considering that it is the “youngest” one, it is obvious that my predecessor did a wonderful job. Nonetheless, Milano Unica has the capacity for further growth if it finds a way to attract the many Italian companies that are not showcasing their collections at MU yet and to team up with the other Italian trade shows, which are quite different from us but share the same Made-inItaly label. As I said, this is our greatest asset.

What do you think about the show moving abroad?

The latest October show held in Shanghai was the best ever. Not only did we increase the number of visitors in Shanghai, but even more in Milan. The debut of Milano Unica New York was very successful, not only in terms of figures, but concerning new customers as well. We all thought that the US market was fully mature, all of us, except for President Albini. So, my sincerest congratulations to him.

You are new to the job as Milano Unica’s president. How do you reconcile your life as an entrepreneur with your new institutional role? How is this experience contributing to your personal growth?

It’s not easy for me to stay away from my “factory”. On the other hand, I have the chance to meet many extraordinary entrepreneurs, which surely makes me a richer person.

You have been to the Pitti Uomo show. How would you describe the sector’s state of health, judging by what you’ve seen in it?

I want to say that Pitti Uomo is a show which Milano Unica can learn much from. As for the feeling I had at the show, it was good, or better still, very good!

E’ una fiera che però può ancora crescere molto se riuscirà a coinvolgere molto di più le molte aziende italiane che ancora non trovano in MU la location ideale per esporre le proprie collezioni e se riuscirà a far squadra con tutte le altre fiere in Italia che, sì, fanno cose molto diverse da noi, ma che hanno in comune la stessa nostra etichetta Made in italy. Come dicevo, è il nostro vantaggio principale.

Cosa ci dice delle ‘trasferte’ all’estero della fiera?

L’ultima edizione di ottobre a Shanghai è stata “the best ever”, non solo aumentiamo i numeri di visitatori a Shanghai, ma soprattutto a Milano. L’esordio di Milano Unica New York è stato più che positivo, non solo nei numeri, ma nello scoprire nuovi clienti in un mercato che tutti noi, tranne forse il presidente Albini, consideravamo maturo. Per cui…complimenti sinceri a lui.

Dopo poco tempo in questo nuovo ruolo, come concilia la sua vita da imprenditore col ruolo istituzionale? E in che cosa questa esperienza la sta arricchendo?

Non è semplice per chi come me soffre lo star lontano dalla “fabbrica”. D’altra parte sto incontrando tanti imprenditori straordinari questo è il più importante arricchimento.

Ha ovviamente visitato Pitti Uomo, quali percezioni ha avuto a Firenze della salute del settore?

Premesso che Pitti per me è una fiera da cui MU può imparare molto, la percezione è stata più che positiva, anzi ottima! interview 19

Biancalani Biancalani offre soluzioni gives solutions!

Traditionally active in the field of machinery for the textile finishing, last November at ITMA 2015 the company Biancalani of Prato/ Italy presented a revolutionary machine that allows, during drying, shrinking and relaxation of knitted fabric in continuous free-form: BRIO 24. With the application of a particular patented vibration system guarantees maximum natural shrinkage never achieved before on knitting. The main advantage is that a garment made with knit dried in BRIO 24, will not suffer any more contraction, so it will be easier to maintain. Additionally you obtain a considerable reduction of the spirality, defect well known by those working the knitting.

During the same international exhibition Biancalani presented the fourth evolution of the popular AIRO 24, a continuous tumbler in open width (protected by several patents) very well known and appreciated by the manufacturers of fabrics and knitwear in all sectors. The great performances of its air mechanical finishing are very much appreciated by finishers of a large range of textiles for clothing, furniture, home textiles, technical textiles and workware, imitation leather, polar fleece, etc. In each of these sectors AIRO 24 guarantees performances that allow its users to become a leader in its sector, holding positions and gaining new market shares.

Serving the textile customer for almost 60 years, the Biancalani is organized with an internal department of design, research and development, and also trials and testing to ensure the satisfactory operation of the machines are done internally. Equal importance is given to the installation and commissioning of the machines, with operators training and after-sale service.

Biancalani exports 95% of its production, with agents in about 80 countries worldwide. The principal countries are India, China, and the Far East in general. In Europe, the countries that absorb more Biancalani machines are Turkey, Portugal and Belgium, and part Italy.

The machinery of the Tuscan company are produced in eco-sustainable ways and are always easy to use and with low energy consumption. Customer expectations and their claim to solutions has always been the main engine of growth of Biancalani.

Tradizionalmente attiva nel campo dei macchinari per il finissaggio dei tessuti, lo scorso Novembre ad ITMA 2015, l'azienda Biancalani di Prato ha presentato una rivoluzionaria macchina che consente, durante l'asciugatura, il restringimento ed il rilassamento della maglia in continuo in forma libera: BRIO 24. Con l'applicazione di un particolare sistema a vibrazione brevettato garantisce il massimo restringimento naturale mai ottenuto prima sulla maglia. C.L.A.S.S., the acronym for Creativity Lifestyle and Sustainable Synergy. Date of birth: 2007. Place of birth: Treviglio, near Bergamo (don’t be fooled by the English name). Place of residence: Milan. And that’s basically it, as far as personal information goes. The rest we learn from Giusy Bettoni, the heart, soul and driving force behind this platform that provides a safe refuge for companies that are committed to sustainable production, but don’t know how to make it known to a wider audience nor how to convey the sustainability message, which is still not widely understood on the market. Giusy Bettoni, from Bergamo, a 33-year career in the textile industry, is one of the greatest experts in the field and she switches frenetically between many roles: from mediator presiding over debates at PV to press agent for companies attending ITMA, while she runs Class’s office, whose fast growth is proportionate to that of the company.

Has your company’s role changed since 2007? Do you adapt to the companies’ needs or is it the opposite? Do you go to them or them to you?

In the past few years, everything has changed for the better. In 2007, we started as a startup company, now our eyes and ears are on constant alert. At the beginning, we served as a platform that interacted with everyone, now we focus on a more specific target. In 2015, we began also working in the educational field by holding workshops for experts to help them exchange information. We offer assistance to the companies that wish to add innovation and communication on top of sustainability. We go looking for one half, the other half comes looking for us. At least three-quarters of our customers are Italian companies, one quarter Japanese, and they all have high product development in common, but no external communication strategy. We work with companies that make wonderful yet nearly unknown products. I have personally worked with companies located just a few kilometers from home, which make products I knew nothing about.

The World Tour across three continents has made you internationally known. What is your major market?

Giusy Bettoni, bergamasca, da 33 anni nel mondo del tessile, è una delle principali esperte in materia e si muove freneticamente tra molteplici ruoli: passa dall’essere mediatrice di dibattiti sul tema a Première Vision a fare da (non certo semplice) addetta stampa ad aziende presenti a ITMA, il tutto coordinando un ufficio cresciuto proporzionalmente a Class.

Il vostro ruolo è cambiato dal 2007 a oggi? Vi adattate voi alle aziende o succede il contrario? Cercate o venite cercati?

In questi anni è cambiato tutto in meglio. Nel 2007 eravamo una startup, oggi abbiamo occhi e orecchie attente e allenate, prima eravamo una piattaforma che interagiva con tutti, oggi abbiamo un target più mirato e nel 2015 ci siamo aperti anche all’educational con workshop per addetti ai lavori che possono condividere informazioni. Siamo un punto di riferimento per le consulenze alle aziende che vogliono aggiungere alla sostenibilità anche innovazione e comunicazione. Metà le cerchiamo noi, l’altra metà ci cerca; tre quarti delle aziende che seguiamo sono italiane, un quarto giapponesi ed in comune hanno tutte un elevato sviluppo del prodotto ma poca e nulla comunicazione all’esterno. Troviamo aziende con prodotti stupendi ma sconosciuti. Mi è capitato personalmente di avere aziende a pochi chilometri da casa che facevano prodotti che ho scoperto solo dopo qualche anno.

As I said, Japan. However, in the past two years the United States have proven to be highly receptive and we are now focusing on this market too.

How does Class work?

We started off with showrooms in various countries across the world, but this is not a contemporary approach anymore, because trade fairs already provide this kind of service, that of being a showcase for the companies. Now we focus on communication and meetings, such as incomings, as we realized that many companies prefer coming to Milan, to our office, than waiting for us to go to them. Furthermore, we go visiting the production plants, which are often just a few kilometers away from the company’s headquarters, and we have noticed that a company does not necessarily require state-of-the-art machinery to be innovative when it has creativity, imagination and sense of responsibility.

Are there products that have attracted your attention more than others? Amazing fabrics or yarns from 2007 to the present day? Any special collaboration with a company?

I would rather not name any names for fear of wronging someone. Fashion designers usually come to us and we provide them with a lot of ideas to choose from. That is how the collaboration begins. I’ve seen cotton, wool, cashmere fabrics and yarns undergo all kinds of transformation…. Certainly, the Newlife by Sinterama, 4-5 years ago, has a special place in our history. It opened up a lot of opportunities for us, including the current Japanese eco-stretch. In Italy, there are a lot of areas that do very well in the sustainability field: Prato and Biella, for instance.

At the institutional level, there is a round table that gathers the Italia Fashion System, the National Chamber of Fashion Il World Tour, con tappe in tre continenti, vi ha reso internazionali. Dove avete più presa?

Come detto in Giappone, ma negli ultimi due anni gli Stati Uniti sono stati molto ricettivi e anche noi ci siamo focalizzati su quel mercato.

Come si muove la struttura di Class?

Abbiamo iniziato con showroom in più parti del mondo ma questo è un approccio non più contemporaneo perché c’è già chi offre questo servizio di vetrina, ovvero le fiere. Ora guardiamo più al dialogo e ad incontri più frequenti, anche di incoming, perché abbiamo visto che molti preferiscono venire a Milano, da noi, piuttosto che aspettarci nei loro Paesi. In più andiamo a vedere dove nascono i prodotti, talvolta anche a pochi chilometri dalla sede, e notiamo che per l’innovazione non è strettamente necessario il macchinario di ultimo modello se mancano creatività, fantasia e responsabilità.

Ci sono prodotti che ti hanno colpita di più? Tessuti o filati stupefacenti ammirati dal 2007 a oggi? Una collaborazione con un’azienda in particolare…

Nominandoli farei torto a qualcuno, anche perché sono gli stilisti che vengono da noi e hanno grande possibilità di scelta che determinano poi le collaborazioni. Ho visto trasformazioni di tutti i tipi in filati e tessuti di cotone, lana, cachemire… Sicuramente nella nostra storia ha un posto di primo piano il Newlife di Sinterama di 4-5 anni fa che ha aperto una strada che ci ha portato a toccare tante eccellenze fino all’eco stretch giapponese di adesso. Posso dire che in Italia ci sono aree che lavorano bene nel campo della sostenibilità: Prato sicuramente, Biella in alcune sue parti, per esempio.

A livello istituzionale c’è un tavolo di lavoro che riunisce, tra gli altri, Sistema Moda Italia, la Camera Nazionale della Moda e l’associazione Tessile&Salute: il manifesto già presentato da CNMI si amplia e affronterà il tema

and the Tessile&Salute Association. The manifesto introduced by CNMI is being expanded to include the themes of sustainability and safety in several spheres, including workplaces and raw materials. What is your opinion on the matter?

I cannot say because I don’t have expertise on the matter, but I am pleased to learn that fashion designers have started talking about it and doing something about it. We have to discredit the theory that sustainable is not beautiful, nor sophisticated or luxurious, but only basic and flat. Introducing common rules in the textile industry, whether in the chemical and production field or in workplaces, is a great step ahead that no one had taken before.

2020 is going to be a key year for environmental policies in various areas of industry: emissions, recyclable wastecollection…What is eco-sustainability going to be like in four years’ time?

As far as I can see, there are many industries committed to environmental protection and having a positive attitude towards consumers.

Much has been done since 2014, but we have to go on stressing the importance of eco-sustainability, because this message is too often not well received.

Over three decades working in the textile industry and so busy on many fronts. Does Giusy Bettoni have other interests, besides Class, showrooms and trade fairs?

Yes, I do. Although I love my job, I do find the time for other interests, including taking classes that relate to my job, such as learning how to communicate differently and more effectively. My number one hobby is whatever has to do with the world of digital communication, but I also enjoy good cuisine, both local and international when I travel abroad for business. della sostenibilità e della sicurezza in più ambiti, compresi i luoghi di lavoro e le materie prime. Come giudichi il lavoro?

Non sono in grado di valutarlo perché non ne ho le basi ma mi fa piacere pensare che anche gli stilisti abbiamo iniziato a parlare del tema e a fare qualcosa, perché bisogna sfatare il tabù che sostenibile non è bello, di lusso o ricercato ma solo basico e piatto. E’ un grande passo che nessuno aveva mai fatto quello di dare regole comuni nel tessile, che siano nella chimica piuttosto che nella produzione, nei luoghi di lavoro o nelle condizioni dei lavoratori.

Il 2020 è in più settori un traguardo per le politiche ambientali: emissioni, rifiuti differenziati… Come sarà l’ecosostenibilità tra quattro anni?

Per quello che vede c’è grande impegno, vedo industrie che hanno voglia di fare, che hanno un atteggiamento positivo nei confronti dei consumatori.

C’è stata una forte accelerazione da metà 2014 in poi ma l’importante è continuare a sollecitare perché questo messaggio spesso trova porte chiuse.

Più di tre decenni nel tessile e un impegno quotidiano su tanti fronti. C’è una Giusy Bettoni al di fuori di Class, degli showroom e delle fiere?

Sì, assolutamente, anche se lavoro in un campo che mi piace trovo il tempo per altri interessi, addirittura per fare anche corsi, sempre comunque legati al mio lavoro, ovvero su come comunicare in maniera sempre diversa e sempre più chiaro. E’ anche un modo per coltivare i miei hobby, che riguardano tutto quello che appartiene al mondo della comunicazione digitale. Esco dal ‘seminato’ con l’interesse per la buona cucina, sia quella locale che quella internazionale quando vado fuori Italia per lavoro.

Fil-3, the importance Fil-3, l'importanza dello stock service of stock service

Compressed timing requirements, increasingly demanding customers, difficulties in finding raw materials, fast-changing trade show schedules.

These are the most pressing issues of 2016 that we discuss with Giacinto Gelli, the owner of Fil-3. “Let’s start off by saying that 2015 has been the best year since the outbreak of the crisis in 2008- says the entrepreneur- owing mostly to our stock service, which allows us to meet our customers’ expectations as far as reliability and quick delivery are concerned. At a time when companies such as ours, working on both the domestic and foreign market, have to deal with different timing requirements, being quick is imperative”. Not to mention the difficulties related to raw materials: “It’s hard to find them and at increasingly high costs, which prevents us from keeping prices fixed. Silk is unobtainable, wool- even blousse- is often of low-quality. Given the situation, I couldn’t increase the materials in stock in the warehouse even if I wanted to.

And I would like to, as I expect a good year this year and I would love meeting everyone’s requests”.

In such a context, trade shows still play an important role: “They are useful, they are the place where people gather and exchange ideas.

However, I don’t agree with the shows being held too early in the season, such as Filo. We need time to prepare our sample collections and we cannot do it unless we know what the market wants, what fashion designers have created. It’s easier for those who produce classic collections, but it’s very difficult for those, like us, who work on a lot of patterns and colors”.

At least, you are able to speed things up through the Internet and your website: “Yes, we do. Our color cards are all viewable in high-definition on our website, to which access is granted through username and password, and which cuts time and distances”.

Tempistiche che cambiano, clienti più esigenti, difficoltà nel reperire le materie prime e calendari delle fiere da aggiornare in continuazione: con Giacinto Gelli, titolare di Fil-3, tocchiamo i temi più 'caldi' di questo 2016: "Intanto iniziamo col dire che il 2015 è stato il più positivo dopo lo scoppio della crisi nel 2008 - dice l'imprenditore - e questo grazie soprattutto allo stock service che ci consente di garantire ai clienti affidabilità e velocità nelle consegne. In un momento in cui le tempistiche sono cambiate per aziende come la nostra che hanno mercato interno ma anche straniero essere rapidi è determinante". Il tutto con le difficoltà legate alle materie prime: "Si trovano con difficoltà e a costi che salgono continuamente e che ci impediscono di mantenere fermi i prezzi per il cliente. La seta è introvabile, la lana, anche blousse, non è sempre di qualità. Anche se volessi aumentare ulteriormente il materiale in magazzino avrei difficoltà a farlo in queste condizioni. E vorrei farlo perchè prevedo una buona annata e vorrei accontentare tutti".

In questo contesto le fiere hanno ancora un ruolo importante: "Servono, sono un punto di incontro e di scambio di idee in tutti i sensi. Sono però in disaccordo con tutte queste anticipazioni, come succede a Filo. Ho detto loro che dobbiamo avere il tempo per fare le campionature e non possiamo farlo se non conosciamo le richieste del mercato, le scelte degli stilisti... PVP, further growth PVP, un 2016 per rafforzarsi e crescere ancora and strengthening in 2016 di Matteo Grazzini

With the creation of the Première Vision Paris brand gathering under its umbrella all the PV trade shows, the cancellation of historic shows such as those held in Moscow and Brazil, the birth of new exhibition events and constant attention to emerging markets, the life of Guglielmo Olearo, the man in charge of all the French company’s international shows, can be hardly described as boring.

In his fourth year as PV manager, of Piedmontese origin with a degree at Turin’s School of Engineering, Olearo is ready to discuss the work he and his staff have done so far and describe his plans for the near future. We talked right after Christmas holidays, with PV New York as his first appointment of the new year.

2015 ended with a lot of changes on the trade show schedule, for both PV and other names. Will 2016 follow the same trend?

2015 has been an important year for us, owing to the launching of the PVP brand, which we are extending to the other local shows too. The decision met with a positive reaction from customers and exhibitors, who appreciate being part of the Première Vision world.

Thanks to the single brand, we are able to provide more varied offerings and highlight specific products such as shoes or denim, the so-called Upper Jeanswear. We have strengthened our position in Istanbul, we have grown in the US and we did very well with denim products in Barcelona, a lively, dynamic city, ideal for this type of clientele and production.

But you had to give Brazil up. The bad news, because totally unexpected, is this: a bolt from the blue or has Brazilian economic growth been slowing down for some time now?

Very bad news, because the decision came abruptly. We were surprised by the country’s sudden economic downturn. All’alba del suo quarto anno nei quadri dirigenziali di PV Olearo, piemontese con laurea al politecnico di Torino, può già fare un bilancio dell’operato suo e dello staff che guida e anche analizzare quello che succederà nel prossimo futuro. Lo abbiamo sentito subito dopo le festività natalizie, con PV New York come primo impegno del 2016.

Si è chiuso un 2015 con tante novità nel calendario dei saloni, sia di Pv che di altri soggetti. Il 2016 seguirà lo stesso trend?

Per noi è stato un anno importante per il lancio del brand PVP, che stiamo applicando anche agli altri saloni locali. Abbiamo avuto ottimi riscontri da parte di clienti ed espositori, contenti di far parte appieno del mondo di Première Vision. Grazie al brand unico abbiamo la possibilità di presentare un’offerta più trasversale e di lanciare focus come quello sulle scarpe o quello sul denim, l’Upper Jeanswear. Per il resto abbiamo consolidato Istanbul e siamo cresciuti tanto negli Usa, ci siamo confermati col denim a Barcellona, città gioiosa, dinamica, ideale per questo tipo di clientela e di prodotto.

Ma avete rinunciato al Brasile. La notizia negativa, perché più inattesa, è questa: fulmine a ciel sereno o il Brasile ha già fermato da tempo una corsa che sembrava inarrestabile?

Notizia molto brutta proprio perché la decisione è maturata in tempi molto brevi. Siamo rimasti sorpresi dall’improvviso rovesciamento delle condizioni economiche del Paese. Avevamo già avuto qualche avvisaglia ma i brasiliani ci dicevano che pesavano gli effetti ed i costi del Mondiale di 30 interview

a few signs leading up to it, but the Brazilians kept telling us that the country had been negatively affected by the costs of the World Football Cup and that the recession would have been mild. Instead, it reached 4%, domestic currency lost 50% of value (going from 2,3 to 4,65 against the euro) and consumption decreased by 12%. That is why we decided to cancel the PV Brazil show and it seems like the trend won’t change in 2016. We constantly monitor the situation every six months but, for the time being, there are no conditions for holding the show in Brazil, also because any crisis in the BRICS area would have immediate repercussions. I’ve been to Brazil, I talked with the local associations, the customers, the entrepreneurs and I realized that the local textile/clothing industry is on the brink of collapse. There are companies whose business has plunged by 40-50%. However, the crisis is making Brazilians investigate the possibility of expanding the market, by stepping out of their inner circle. We’ve actually seen some of them in New York .

Are you exploring the possibility of taking PV to other countries to make up for the cancelled shows?

In 2016, considering the international situation, we will focus on strengthening our position where we are already established and on promoting our PV, Tissu Premier and Denim brands, while doing our best to make the New York show look as similar as possible to the Paris show, with comprehensive offerings all in house. At present, I see no specific countries worth looking out for. Some say India, but in my opinion the country is still too conservative.

In Italy, the government has been investing strongly in the Milano Unica, Filo and other trade shows in order to make up ground on Première Vision. Have these investments had effect on Première Vision?

To be honest, I believe they have caused only positive effects. The fact that the Italian government has been investing in trade shows encourages us to improve and do better. We are a private company, we cannot rely on state funding and we have to adapt to the markets. calcio e che la recessione sarebbe rimasta su percentuali basse. Monitoriamo tutto di sei mesi in sei mesi ma non ci sono, al momento, le premesse per rifare il salone là, anche perché nei paesi del BRICS c’è sempre la possibilità di avere contraccolpi repentini. Sono stato in Brasile, ho parlato con le associazioni di categoria, i clienti, gli imprenditori e ho capito che l’industria del tessile-abbigliamento non è al collasso ma quasi; ci sono aziende che lavorano al 40-50% in meno rispetto a prima. Comunque la crisi sta facendo riflettere i brasiliani su un allargamento dei mercati, uscendo dal loro circolo interno, e in effetti ne abbiamo visti alcuni a New York State studiando la possibilità di portare PV in altre parti del mondo in sostituzione delle edizioni annullate?

Visto il contesto internazionale il 2016 sarà un anno di consolidamento là dove siamo presenti e di lancio ulteriore dei marchi PV, Tissu Premier e Denim, oltre a fare sempre di più di New York una piccola Parigi, con l’offerta completa del salone. Non vedo emergere zone particolari sulle quali puntare. C’è chi dice l’India ma è un Paese ancora troppo conservatore.

In Italia proseguono i proclami delle istituzioni per recuperare terreno, in Europa e nel resto del mondo, rispetto a Première Vision. Per ora avete visto effetti di questi forti investimenti da parte del governo su Milano Unica, Filo e altre fiere?

Onestamente i riflessi che abbiamo avuto sono stati positivi. Al di là degli interessi singoli il fatto che anche in Italia si sia iniziato a puntare forte sulle fiere ci dà stimoli per migliorarci e per dare del nostro meglio. Noi siamo una società privata, che non ha aiuti statali e nella quale lavoriamo adattandoci ai mercati. Dal punto di vista dei numeri il 2015 è stato eccezionale e spero che il 2016 lo sia altrettanto, quindi non ci sentiamo interview 31

Guglielmo Olearo Data show that 2015 was a very successful year and I hope 2016 will be the same. So, we don’t feel damaged by what is going on in Italy. Instead, we are very worried about the world’s geopolitical balance, now that Saudi Arabia is at war with its “neighbors” and the North Korean bomb has caused Asian markets to falter.

What atmosphere can we expect to find in Paris? Many exhibitors and buyers cancelled their trip to Paris to attend Tissu Premier after the terrorist attacks in mid-November. Did the same thing happen to Première Vision?

Exhibitors have had some doubts and questions for us, but the number attending the show has not decreased. We have taken increased safety measures, but the city’s general atmosphere has not changed much. Parisians have reacted immediately to terrorism, the city has responded by not withdrawing into itself and the whole world is showing support and solidarity. Unfortunately, even terrorism has gone global and I personally don’t feel more or less safe in Paris than I do in Lyons, Turin or Istanbul. danneggiati da quanto sta succedendo in Italia, piuttosto siamo preoccupati per l’assetto geopolitico mondiale, ora che anche l’Arabia Saudita è entrata in conflitto con i ‘vicini’ e che una bomba in Nord Corea ha fermato i mercati asiatici.

Che Parigi, intesa come città e come ambiente, dobbiamo aspettarci? Espositori e visitatori hanno rinunciato a Tissu Premier all'indomani degli attentati di metà novembre. E' successo qualcosa di simile anche a Première Vision?

Qualche dubbio è nato, qualche domanda ci è stata fatta dagli espositori ma il numero non è sceso. Da parte nostra abbiamo già previsto misure per garantire la sicurezza di tutti ma in città il clima non è cambiato troppo, la risposta dei parigini al terrorismo è stata immediata, la città ha reagito, non si è chiusa, supportata anche dai messaggi di vicinanza e solidarietà arrivati da tutto il mondo. Ormai anche il terrorismo è globale e personalmente non mi sento più o meno sicuro a Parigi piuttosto che a Lione, a Torino o a Istanbul.

History and Innovation Tintoria Silli, tra storia e innovazione

The name Silli has been closely associated with textile dyeing since the late 1700s. The first company was established by Giuseppe Silli, in Via del Gelsomino, in the late 1800s.

His son Alessandro had to face the 1922 and 1929 crises while, in 1943, the very young Renzo stepped in, taking the company from small to industrial-scale between the fifties and sixties. The company’s growth led to the opening of the big plant in Via Galcianese, where all production processes are still carried out.

We spoke with Giorgio, one of the owners of the dyeing factory that works for Pratese companies, as well as for some Biella-based and foreign businesses.

“It can hardly be denied that the district has been going through hard times in the past few years. We have started investing again a few months ago, by doubling the production capacity of our cone department. We have seen dozens of customers coming back after years of absence, owing to the fact that we provide impeccable service in both the knitwear and weaving yarn fields and such versatility that we can meet large production demands, as well as small supply and sample collection requests. Silli è sinonimo di tintoria a partire dalla fine del 1700, della fine dell’800 è l’attività di impresa artigianale di Giuseppe Silli in via del Gelsomino.

Toccò al figlio Alessandro superare le crisi del 1922 e del 1929, mentre nel 1943 il giovanissimo Renzo prese in mano l’azienda, che assunse una dimensione industriale tra gli anni ’50 e ‘60. Una crescita che obbligò all’apertura del grande stabilimento di via Galcianese che ancora oggi ospita le lavorazioni.

Oggi la Tintoria Silli è leader nella tintura di rocche e tops, dopo Alessandro ed Armando, sono in pista i nipoti di Renzo: Giorgio e il giovane Edoardo, in un mix di tradizione e nuovi impulsi.

Parliamo con Giorgio della Tintoria che lavora per aziende di Prato soprattutto, ma anche di Biella,oltre che per alcune straniere.

“Inutile negare le difficoltà che il distretto ha subito negli ultimi anni; noi da alcuni mesi siamo tornati ad investire, raddoppiando la capacità produttiva del reparto rocche. Dopo anni sono tornati clienti a decine, grazie al fatto che offriamo un servizio impeccabile sia nell’ambito dei filati da maglieria che da tessitura, e al fatto che riusciamo a garantire una versatilità tale da soddisfare grandi produzioni ma anche piccole forniture e campionari. Oggi la qualità è condizione indispensabile per poter guardare al futuro. Vinciamo le nostre battaglie andando oltre, con competenze tecniche, velocità di lavorazione, problem solving, logistica. From Prato to the world, Andrea Cavicchi. Da Prato al mondo, passando per Firenze going through Florence di Elisa Signorini

Andrea Cavicchi’s horizons are broadening at a bewildering rate: from president of Prato’s Confindustria to star of the association’s evolution towards Confindustria Toscana Nord to newly-elected president of the Florence Center for Italian Fashion. Many demanding and prestigious roles to perform at one time - in addition to that of entrepreneur- , which Cavicchi says he feels honored to fulfill and will carry on as long as he can do it excellently. Anything lower than that is not good enough for the textile/clothing industry, which is crucial to our country’s economy and to which the government is finally bringing its support.

Our first question for the president of the Florence Center for Italian Fashion is: what does he see as the goals of his presidency?

In perfect continuity with my predecessor Stefano Ricci, I intend to go on promoting the city of Florence, relaunching the Pitti Uomo show and, above all, focusing on the Pitti Filati and Pitti Bimbo shows, which have been suffering from declining attendance lately. As a matter of fact, we are working on a project, alongside the ministry, which aims to provide support to these two shows, in particular.

Do you have any projects under way?

Of course, we are already working on the June events. The link with the Uffizi Gallery, which the Minister announced at the opening of the Pitti Uomo show, is very interesting and it offers us the chance to plan events for the next three years to be held at museums. We are thinking about exhibitions, rather than fashion shows, for these locations. I have been suggesting to exploit the interconnectedness between fashion and culture for years. Fashion is culture, no doubt. I would like to get some private museums and Prato’s Textile Museum involved in the project too.

A born-and-bred Pratese at the head of the Florence Center for Italian Fashion. What about the traditional rivalry between Prato and Florence?

Let’s say that we put it aside! I found some very open-minded people and I tend to get everyone involved in order to return the Center to its original role as political coordinator, leaving Pitti with the task of taking care of the shows. Ricci worked in the same direction.

The latest news is the creation of the Committee for Fashion and Accessories, of which the Center is a member.

What do you think about it?

The Center and Pitti Immagine are eager to attend the first meeting together, scheduled for January 27, where we will be asking L’orizzonte di Andrea Cavicchi diventa sempre più largo: da presidente di Confindustria Prato è protagonista dell’evoluzione verso Confindustria Toscana Nord e da poco si aggiunto il nuovo, prestigioso e impegnativo ruolo di presidente del Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana. Tanti compiti che si aggiungono a quello di imprenditore e che lo stesso Cavicchi dichiara che accetterà, onorato di tanta fiducia, fino a che riuscirà a portarli avanti in maniera eccellente: un parametro più basso non è contemplabile in questo settore del Tessile/Abbigliamento, fondamentale nell’economia del nostro Paese e finalmente sempre più riconosciuto nella sua importanza anche a livello governativo.

Al presidente del Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana, chiediamo quali saranno gli obiettivi del suo mandato.

In totale continuità con la presidenza di Stefano Ricci, c’è la volontà di valorizzare la città di Firenze, di continuare nel rilancio di Pitti Uomo e soprattutto di impegnarsi molto sulle fiere dei Filati e del Bimbo che stanno soffrendo un po’ di più. Non a caso nel progetto che stiamo elaborando con il ministero abbiamo chiesto supporto soprattutto per queste due manifestazioni.

Ci sono dei progetti già in corso?

Ovviamente stiamo già lavorando sugli eventi di giugno ed è interessante il link con gli Uffizi che il Ministro ha annunciato in occasione dell’inaugurazione di Pitti Uomo e che ci darà la possibilità di organizzare eventi nei prossimi tre anni in sedi museali: noi pensiamo più a mostre che a sfilate in queste sedi. Per quanto mi riguarda propongo da sempre di sfruttare questo legame tra moda e cultura, certo che la moda stessa è cultura. Ed è un mio obiettivo coinvolgere in questo progetto anche i Musei privati e Prato col suo Museo del Tessuto.

Un pratese alla guida del Centro di Firenze per la Moda Italiana: come la mettiamo col campanilismo?

Diciamo che lo abbiamo messo da parte! Ho trovato una grande apertura, incoraggiata dalla mia tendenza a coinvolgere tutti i soggetti e a ridare al Centro il suo ruolo originario di coordinamento politico, lasciando a Pitti il compito di occuparsi delle fiere. Del resto già Ricci andava in questo senso.

Grande novità di queste settimane è la nascita del Comitato per la Moda e l'Accessorio, di cui il Centro farà parte: cosa ne pensa?

Il Centro e Pitti Immagine si avvicinano compatti al primo incontro previsto per il 27 gennaio, con la richiesta decisa di valorizzare Firenze che indubbiamente offre delle eccellenze a livello fieristico. In generale mi pare si possa fare bel lavoro sulla razionalizzazione delle fiere nazionali, chiaramente molti dettagli saranno da aggiustare al tavolo di discussione: per esempio la volontà del Governo di unificare le fiere minori a Rho in contemporanea con la settimana della

for more support for Florence, which runs trade shows of the highest international standard. In general terms, I believe we can work fruitfully on the rationalization of national trade shows, although many details need to be discussed. For instance, I am quite doubtful about the Government’s idea of holding all the smaller shows at Rho at the same time as the fashion week being a good idea. The distance between Milan and the trade show area is undeniable and even more significant during the fashion week, when most of the attendees stay in the city to take part in the many events. We’ll see, I’m optimistic.

Some are already doubtful about this Committee, describing it as a decoy, another government body having no actual power. Are you one of the dissenting voices?

It will be clear from the outset whether the Committee works or not. If it’s only a marketing strategy, it will come to nothing very soon. However, seven subjects around a table are a lot and, what’s more, they differ from one another in kind and influence. I believe that, at the beginning, it is fair to involve as many different voices as possible, but then we will have to find a working method, otherwise it’s only a waste of time.

What do you think the government funds should be used for?

The first things that come to my mind are trade shows, internationalization and incoming: distinct activities which, however, need to be carried on at the same time. It is crucial to assist our companies in the penetration of foreign markets, through missions and trade shows, but it is also very important to bring potential customers to our country and to our districts to make them understand the real meaning of the “Made-in-Italy”.

Let’s go back to Prato: you stood behind and supported Prato’s Association of Industrialists through the birth of Confindustria Toscana. How is the evolution going so far?

We will be electing the new bodies in a month’s time. We are currently busy discussing the staff ’s restructuring. We have some hard work to do, but it will lead to an absolutely positive rationalization process.

As an entrepreneur, what do you think about the crowded and fast-changing calendar of trade shows?

As an entrepreneur and representative of Pratese industrialists, I am insisting to have Prima held in early July, as it used to be, at the perfect time of the year for us. And I would love to move it from Milan to Florence, have it held at the same time as Pitti Filati.

It’s not such a far-fetched idea, considering that Fiera Milano has to leave the Portello and a show attended by only 80 exhibitors is too small for such a big exhibition space like Rho. Instead, the Fortezza is perfect.

How do you see the world’s current economic scenario and, within it, the textile industry?

There have been some signs of recovery, but they are less visible now. We have to be careful, because the situation is still uncertain, starting with oil prices, which is a big problem. As for international markets, China has never been the textile industry’s major market; the US are not as promising as expected; Russia has definitely slowed down. Instead, Japan and Korea are doing well.

What is the key word for entrepreneurs?

At the risk of appearing repetitive, I have to say innovation again. In spite of everything, those who introduce innovations and advanced, interesting solutions do fine. Those who don’t, and stay still, are dead. moda mi lascia un po’ perplesso, perché la distanza del polo fieristico da Milano è innegabile e anzi è amplificata durante la fashion week che trattiene gli operatori in città per gli innumerevoli eventi. Ma vedremo, sono comunque ottimista.

Qualcuno già guarda in maniera dubbiosa a questo Comitato come ad uno specchietto per le allodole, un altro ente privo di strumenti: lei esce dal coro?

Se il Comitato funzionerà lo vedremo subito: se è solo una mossa di marketing sarà una bolla di sapone destinata a esplodere rapidamente. Di certo, sette soggetti intorno a un tavolo sono tanti, in più questi sono molto diversi per tipo e per peso. Credo che all’inizio sia giusto questo coinvolgimento ampio, poi ci sarà da trovare un metodo di lavoro altrimenti perdiamo tutti tempo.

Come ritiene più giusto utilizzare i contributi che verranno dal Governo?

Mi vengono subito in mente fiere, internazionalizzazione e incoming: attività che vanno in senso opposto ma che devono essere svolte di pari passo. E’ essenziale sostenere la penetrazione delle nostre aziende sui mercati esteri, con missioni e fiere, ma lo è altrettanto portare sul nostro territorio e nei nostri distretti i potenziali clienti che devono conoscere il vero senso del Made in Italy.

Tornando per un attimo a Prato: lei ha accompagnato l’Unione degli Industriali di Prato nella nascita di Confindustria Toscana. Come procede questa trasformazione?

Tra un mese ci sarà l’elezione dei nuovi organi, in questi giorni ci sono riunioni per la riorganizzazione degli organici. Si tratta di un lavoro impegnativo che va verso una razionalizzazione assolutamente positiva.

Parliamo anche all’imprenditore. Tante fiere e un calendario in continuo cambiamento: cosa sarebbe auspicabile?

Da imprenditore ma soprattutto da rappresentante degli industriali pratesi dico subito che ci stiamo battendo per ripristinare Prima all’inizio di luglio: si tratta di un’anteprima che per noi si colloca in un momento perfetto del calendario. E sarebbe bello portarla da Milano a Firenze, in concomitanza con Pitti Filati. L’idea potrebbe non essere tanto peregrina alla luce del fatto che Fiera Milano deve lasciare il Portello e che una fiera di 80 espositori a Rho sarebbe assolutamente sproporzionata. Al contrario la Fortezza potrebbe avere i giusti spazi.

Infine, come vede la congiuntura mondiale e all’interno di essa il settore tessile?

Ci sono stati segnali forti di ripresa che poi si sono un po’ smorzati. Oggi ci sono ancora molte incertezze che ci fanno essere prudenti, a partire dall’attuale prezzo del petrolio che rappresenta certamente un problema. Per quanto riguarda i mercati, la Cina per i tessuti non è oggi, come non è mai stata, un grande sbocco; gli Stati Uniti non si stanno rivelando la terra promessa che pareva potessero essere; la Russia è indubbiamente rallentata. Bene invece il Giappone e la Corea.

Qual è la parola d’ordine per gli imprenditori?

A costo di essere ripetitivo, devo dire ancora una volta innovazione. Nonostante tutto, chi innova e propone soluzioni avanzate e interessanti va ancora bene, chi rimane fermo è morto.

45 years old, the owner of Mario Cavelli, a company that has been producing home décor fabrics for over eighty years, a man of unyielding disposition but open to dialogue and widely shared solutions, Matteo Cavelli is now in his second term of office as president of TessiliVari.

TessiliVari is a federation gathering over a thousand small and medium-sized companies in the textile industry, which was part of the Confederation of Italian Industry until 2015 and then joined Confapi, the Confederation of Private Small and Medium-Sized Industry, after the breakdown in negotiations on the renewal of national collective agreements one year ago. We could talk about it for hours, but the president is very busy (we did the interview during the Heimtextil show), so let’s get down to the questions.

The sector is still looking lively, the markets quite active. Do you entrepreneurs have the same feeling?

Judging by this and other trade shows, 2016 could be the year of recovery, but only for those who lived through the crisis, not many unfortunately.

At the shows, the Italians are surrounded by Turkish, Indian and Chinese competitors and what makes the difference is quality on one side and pricing on the other. We are always exposed to the risk of seeing our sample collections fall into the hands of foreign competitors that copy and sell at lower prices.

Where do you have the biggest problems?

In Russia. We textile manufacturers, along with shoe manufacturers, are those who are paying the heaviest price for the economic and political crisis. The increasingly unfavorable exchange is like paying duty on our products and, what’s more, our Chinese and even Turkish competitors, despite all current disagreements with Russia, are trying to kick us out of the market by selling at much lower prices.

Instead, what markets can you count on?

European markets are still strong, but they do not provide us with new customers. Canada and the US seem healthy enough, but they are medium/

45 anni, titolare della Mario Cavelli, azienda che da oltre ottanta anni produce tessile da arredamento e tendaggi, poco malleabile ma aperto al dialogo e alle soluzioni condivise, Matteo Cavelli é al suo secondo mandato da presidente di TessiliVari, federazione da piú di un migliaio di aderenti tra le piccole e medie aziende del settore, fino al 2015 nella famiglia di Confindustria e ora con Confapi, la Confederazione Italiana della Piccola e Media Industria Privata.

Questo dopo la ‘rottura’ in tema di rinnovo del contratto nazionale collettivo arrivata meno di un anno fa. Ce n’é abbastanza per parlare per ore, ma per il presidente il tempo scorre veloce e gli impegni in fiera (lo abbiamo intervistato durante Heimtextil) lo reclamano, quindi via con le domande, iniziando da un quadro generale.

Il settore sembra vivo, i mercati abbastanza animati. É la percezione che avete anche voi imprenditori?

Guardando a questa fiera come ad altre sembra che il 2016 possa essere l’anno della rinascita, ma solo per chi é rimasto dopo la crisi, quindi non molti.

Ai saloni noi italiani siamo accerchiati da turchi, indiani e cinesi e a fare la differenza sono da un lato la qualitá e dall’altro i prezzi. C’é sempre il rischio che pezzi del nostro campionario finiscano in mani estere per essere copiati e venduti a prezzi inferiori.

Dove sono i problemi maggiori?

In Russia. Noi e i calzaturieri stiamo pagando piú di altri la crisi economica e politica. Il cambio sfavorevole e in continuo peggioramento non é ufficialmente un dazio ma é come se lo fosse e in quel mercato ci stanno scalzando i cinesi ma anche i turchi, che pure politicamente ora sono agli antipodi con i russi ma di fronte a prezzi molto piú bassi...

Chi invece vi dá fiducia?

I mercati europei tengono le posizioni ma senza clienti nuovi. Sembrano in buona salute Canada e Stati Uniti ma nei loro casi si parla di prodotti di

TessiliVari, along with Uniontessile-Confapi, has written a letter to vice-minister Calenda asking to be represented in the newly-established Fashion Committee and our request will certainly be granted. We are also associates in Milano Unica and, thus, very attentive as to where the resources are placed. Our principle is to help the companies, we are entrepreneurs and the association does not have a board nor managers.

We are working with members of the European Parliament on the promotion of labelling and traceability. As for the collective agreement, they can’t change the rules in the middle of the game: we were forced to agree to a substantial increase because of inflation and now they want to use productivity as the benchmark. At least we removed second-level collective bargaining, but there is still some friction with trade unions.

Noi di TessiliVari, con Uniontessile-Confapi, abbiamo scritto una lettera al vice ministro Calenda per essere rappresentati nel Comitato per la Moda appena creato e sicuramente le nostre richieste verranno accolte. Siamo anche soci di Milano Unica e quindi piú che mai attenti a chi vengono destinate le risorse; il nostro principio é agevolare le aziende, siamo imprenditori e l’associazione non ha consiglio o dirigenti. Ci muoviamo con i parlamentari europei per promuovere l’etichettatura e la tracciabilitá. Per quanto riguarda il contratto non voglio che le regole siano cambiate in corso: ci hanno portato ad un aumento fin troppo sostanzioso parlandoci dell’inflazione e ora vorrebbero spostare il parametro sulla produttivitá. Se non altro abbiamo tolto la contrattazione di secondo livello ma con i sindacati qualche contrasto rimane.

Cambi Luigi, Cambi Luigi, il bello del distretto the best of the district Heaven help those who stay still! The drain of companies out of the Pratese district has stopped. But the survivors are those who relied on innovation and research and were not scared to invest in such difficult times. Such is the case of Cambi Luigi, whose factory chimney soars high and proud above the heart of the city.

“2015 was not a bad year- says one of the company owners Iacopo Scuccimarra- also because a lot of companies have disappeared and now we face less competition in the market. We are so thankful for still being here alive and healthy, we did our best to hold out and stay ahead of the others. The “survivors” now represent the best of the district”.

What makes things even better is the current economic situation, tariffs and the reduction in some costs, such as gas: “Every little bit helps” says Scuccimarra, pointing out that Cambi Luigi has been one of the first companies of the Prato district to embrace the cause of sustainability: “We have installed a toxic fume treatment system- says Scuccimarra- and a one-megawatt photovoltaic system on the company’s buildings and on the buildings of our affiliated companies”. And for many years now, the company has been providing for the separate collection of waste: fluff, fabric, cardboard, plastic, iron and wood. Then they have a laboratory on company premises, where research work is carried out: “Especially on dyeing products and chemicals- goes on the company owner- and on whatever else contributes to environmental protection and improves product quality”.

Guai a fermarsi. L'emorragia di aziende tessili nel distretto pratese si è fermata e sul mercato sono rimasti solo quelli che hanno puntato su innovazione e ricerca, senza lasciarsi intimorire dai rischi degli investimenti in un momento difficile. E' il caso della Cambi Luigi, con la sua ciminiera vicina al cuore della città che continua a svettare orgogliosa.

"Il 2015 non è andato male - conferma uno dei titolari, Iacopo Scuccimarra - anche perchè ormai tante realtà sono sparite e la concorrenza è diminuita. Il fatto di esserci ancora è un premio per noi, che ci abbiamo messo del nostro per resistere e stare davanti agli altri. Chi è adesso sul mercato rappresenta il bello del distretto".

A migliorare la situazione è anche la congiuntura attuale, le tariffe e soprattutto l'abbassamento di alcuni costi, come ad esempio quello del gas: "E' un piccolo aiuto" conferma Scuccimarra, ma anche questo è un tema d'attualità alla Cambi Luigi, che è una delle aziende che per prime ha sposato la causa della sostenibilità: “Ci siamo dotati di sistemi per l’abbattimento dei fumi nell’atmosfera – continua Scuccimarra – e abbiamo anche un impianto fotovoltaico da quasi un mega su immobili di proprietà o di società collegate”. In più da anni, in anticipo sui tempi, è stata avviata la raccolta differenziata degli scarti: peluria, stoffa, cartoni, plastica, ferro e legno. Poi c’è il laboratorio interno, dove fare ricerca: “Sui prodotti, soprattutto di tintoria e sui chimici – continua il titolare dell’azienda – e su tutto quello che in generale ci può far ridurre l’impatto ambientale e migliorare la qualità del lavoro”.

The Pitti Filati, Milano Unica and Première Vision trade shows, in their winter version, are held at a time of the year when Valentine’s Day is just around the corner. Whether way before time (Florence), slightly before (Milan) or right before (Paris), if you’re traveling for business in these three cities, all the more the reason to celebrate Valentine’s Day at one of the lovely restaurants listed below.

Florence’s restaurant scene offers a wide variety of cuisines and locations to choose from, starting with the Winter Garden By Caino (Piazza Ognissanti 1 - ph.+39 055 2716 3770): a one-Michelin-starred restaurant, it was born out of the collaboration between the St. Regis Florence Hotel and Chef Valeria Piccini. Gourmet cuisine dishes are served in the lovely Art Deco-style Winter Garden, decorated with paintings by artist Giovannozzi which represent an allegorical vision of the city of Florence, with live music playing in the background.

Bottega del Buon Caffè (Lungarno Benvenuto Cellini 69 - ph. +39 055 553 5677) is located in the San Niccolò neighborhood. Local traditional cuisine with a contemporary twist, based on the use of ingredients from the restaurant-owned farm, and modern interiors.

Customers can dine in the private room housing the restaurant’s wine collection. Villa Cora (Viale Machiavelli 18 - ph. +39 055 228790) offers the chance to enjoy a romantic, candlelit dinner based on the most classic aphrodisiac foods and special treatments for two at the hotel’s well-known spa. Da’ Pescatore (Piazza del Carmine 8 - ph.055 219978), housed in a former Anglican church, offers dishes that “stand Pitti Filati, Milano Unica e Première Vision, nella loro versione invernale, si inseriscono in un calendario dove, sia pure non segnata in rosso, c’è una festività celebrata ovunque, San Valentino. Chi lo anticipa (Firenze), chi lo precede di poco (Milano) o chi arriva subito a ridosso (Parigi): ma in ognuna delle tre città c’è un motivo in più per festeggiarlo, unendo il piacere della compagnia al dovere del lavoro, la qualità e lo charme dei ristoranti.

Firenze offre, per scenari e menu, una scelta molto ampia: motivi di spazio ci obbligano a una lista limitata che inizia con il Winter Garden By Caino (piazza Ognissanti 1 - ph.+39 055 2716 3770): una stella Michelin, nasce dalla collaborazione tra il The St. Regis Florence e la Chef Valeria Piccini. Cene gourmet sono servite nell’atmosfera con musica dal vivo del Giardino d’Inverno, in stile Art Decò, illuminato da un grande velario eseguito su cartoni di Giovannozzi con una visione allegorica della città di Firenze. Se.Sto On Arno (Piazza Ognissanti 3 - 6th floor The Westin Excelsior – ph. +39 055 2715 2783), features a covered rooftop terrace with glass walls offering a full panoramic view of Florence. The menu is based on traditional, Mediterranean-style dishes made exclusively with fresh and seasonal ingredients. Last but not least, Sosta del Rossellino (Via del Rossellino 2r, Settignano - ph. +39 055 697245) is the perfect location for a romantic dinner in the hills of Settignano with view of Florence.

Even in Italy’s most active, fast-paced and frenzied city, Milan, there are places where sweethearts can enjoy some privacy and wine and dine to their hearts’ content. Among them is The Small (Via Paganini 3 - ph. +39 02 2024 0943), the perfect marriage of excellent cuisine and design interiors, with a rotating menu of seasonal dishes. Iyo (Via Piero della Francesca 74 - ph. +39 02 45476898), is one of Italy’s first fusion cuisine restaurants. Sushi-style meat, fish and vegetable-based dishes prepared in the open kitchen. Not far away, along the same street, is Pier 52 (ph. +39 02 3360 0400), offering such an extensive fish-based menu that it feels like dining beside the seaside. Aromando Bistrot (Via Moscati 13 – ph . +39 02 3674 4172) is a family-owned restaurant that makes use of organically-grown ingredients to prepare simple but tasty dishes. Perfect for those who go for good food over ambience. Da Noi In (Via Forcella 6 – ph. +39 02 8378111) is the restaurant of the luxury "piatti che si fanno riconoscere per le luci e i colori che li compongono, ma soprattutto per i mezzitoni e le sfumature che vi si aggirano intorno". Se.Sto On Arno (piazza Ognissanti 3 - 6th floor The Westin Excelsior – ph. +39 055 2715 2783), con terrazza con vista a 360 gradi sui tetti di Firenze, tramite una struttura realizzata con vetrate continue. Per la cena il menu offre piatti della tradizione gastronomica mediterranea utilizzando esclusivamente prodotti freschi e di stagione. Infine Sosta del Rossellino (via del Rossellino 2r, Settignano - ph. +39 055 697245), perfetto per una cena romantica affacciati sulle colline che guardano Firenze da Settignano.

Anche nella Milano più attiva, frenetica e moderna ci sono angoli in cui gli innamorati possono isolarsi e consumare una cenetta di coppia in intimità e complicità. Asian cuisine at Shambala (Via Giuseppe Ripamonti 337 – ph. +39 02 552 0194). The restaurant is a bit off the beaten path, but it offers an extensive, top-quality menu and ethnic interiors. Last but not the least, The City (Piazza Borromeo 20 – Milano Senago - ph. +39 02 9976490), which gives onto the park of the Villa San Carlo Borromeo Hotel, in Senago, a short twenty-minute drive from Milan. A treat for both the palate and the sight, as the age-old villa houses also a museum and art gallery.

Any comment on how romantic Paris is would be quite superfluous: Paris and romance are synonyms and on Valentine’s Day even a picnic under the Eiffel Tower would do! However, there are restaurants in Paris that any person in love should experience at least once in a lifetime, places where famous romantic movie scenes have been filmed. Of course, we are talking about restaurants whose pricing is directly proportionate to their fame and quality, but in some cases going to dinner is the Valentine’s Day gift itself. Our tour begins at Mystery Cuisine (37 bis Rue de Montpensier – ph. +33 01 79 97 31 81), typical Parisian atmosphere with soft lights. Delicate gourmet cuisine accompanied by fun and spectacular service. Le 23 Clauzel (23 Rue Clauzel – ph. +33 01 82 88 07 12) is a more affordable restaurant offering creative cuisine served in a wine cellar with vaulted and raftered ceiling. Mariette (24 Rue Bosquet – ph . +33 01 82 88 26 61) is a small, fifteen-seat restaurant offering a mix of French and Spanish cuisine with South-American influences. Advanced booking is highly recommended. If a picnic under the Tour Eiffel is not your thing, how about climbing the tower and having dinner at Le 58 Tour Eiffel (Champ de Mars, 1er étage de la Tour Eiffel – ph. +33 0 825 56 66 62), on the first floor of the world’s most famous monument? And if you enjoy dining in motion, rocked by the waters of the Seine river, we recommend the Bateaux Mouches (77 Rue du Cardinal Lemoine – ph. +33 01 47 07 04 17), which take you on a boat tour of Paris. Drinks at the pier, first course before the Louvre Museum, dessert behind Notre Dame… amato da chi dà precedenza al palato piuttosto che all’immagine. Da Noi In (via Forcella 6 – ph. +39 02 8378111) ha molto già nel nome, al quale aggiunge il ‘riparo’ del lussuoso Hotel Magna Pars, in zona Tortona: arredamento di gran lusso e gusto nel dettaglio, nel cibo e nella presentazione dei piatti. Tutto già provato da La Spola. Sapori asiatici da Shambala (via Giuseppe Ripamonti 337 – ph. +39 02 552 0194), ristorante un po’ decentrato con ambiente etnico, scelta ampia e di qualità. Chiusura con The City (piazza Borromeo 20 – Milano Senago - ph. +39 02 9976490) affacciato sul parco dell’hotel Villa San Carlo Borromeo, a Senago, a soli venti minuti da Milano. Oltre al piacere del palato c’è quello della vista, con l’antica villa che ospita anche un museo e una galleria d’arte.

Inutile dilungarsi sull’aggettivo romantico riferito a Parigi: è un attributo ormai insito nel nome stesso della città e probabilmente per San Valentino anche un pic-nic all’ombra della torre Eiffel va più che bene. Ma ci sono dei ristoranti che rappresentano il sogno di ogni innamorato, una location ideale per ogni storia di coppia e ovviamente alcuni non sono sfuggiti neppure a pittori e registi. Ovviamente i prezzi sono proporzionali a fama e qualità ma in ceri casi la cena è il vero e proprio regalo tra innamorati. Il tour può iniziare al Mystery Cuisine (37 bis rue de Montpensier – ph. +33 01 79 97 31 81), tipica atmosfera con le luci soffuse. La cucina raffinata e delicata è accompagnata da un servizio divertente e spettacolare. Al Le 23 Clauzel (23 rue Clauzel – ph. +33 01 82 88 07 12) l’ambientazione è affidata a una cantina a volte, con travi e pietre a vista. In questo caso la cucina è creativa e il prezzo meno impegnativo. Mariette (24 rue Bosquet – ph . +33 01 82 88 26 61) è un piccolo ristorante, con solo 15 posti e un menu che si divide tra la cucina francese e quella iberica e qualche divagazione anche nell’America Latina. Prenotazione quantomai consigliata. Se il pic-nic alla torre Eiffel non basta si può sempre salirci sopra e cenare alla brasserie Le 58 Tour Eiffel (Champ de Mars, 1er étage de la Tour Eiffel – ph. +33 0 825 56 66 62), al primo piano del monumento più famoso al mondo. Infine una cena in movimento, cullati dalle acque della Senna: è quella sul Bateau Mouches, il traghetto che fa il giro di Parigi. L’aperitivo al molo, il primo davanti al Louvre, il dessert dietro Notre Dame…
