the world’s most important textile machinery show, a global

showcase in which we have a small role as media partner. An honour, but also the responsibility of describing accurately and minutely the eight-day show and providing our readers with a daily dose of information, news and updates on our portal HYPERLINK "http://www.laspola.com" www.laspola.com and in this special Showcase issue.

The textile machinery industry is one of the sectors that brings prestige to Italy in the textile-clothing world: quality, research, innovation and sustainability are the strengths of our companies, which we describe by showcasing the opinions gathered in Italy’s four most representative textile districts: Biella, Como, Prato and Varese. And without ever forgetting about Acimit, the association member of Cematex, the trade show’s organizer and the highest representative body of the Italian textile machinery industry. This special Showcase ITMA is a guide to the show grounds, provides information and news about the exhibiting companies and an overview of where the market stands today, obviously from the Italian point of view, with exports still playing a crucial role and domestic consumption struggling to recover.

The “birth” of textile machinery is, instead, described by those who invest money, produce and attend ITMA as exhibitors, that is, the sector’s entrepreneurs and company owners. They build the future of the textile industry, while we tell you about the past. In other words, we take a dive into the history of ITMA, with the help of the protagonists of the book “The Stories of Prato” by Pierfrancesco Benucci. The book, in its English version, will be given to our fellow journalists attending the show.

So let’s enjoy the Italian edition of ITMA, hoping that the worldwide success of Expo will extend to the textile machinery world.

We’ll tell you Vi raccontiamo una storia a story The collaboration between our publishing house and the Prato-based marketing company 360 Gradi srl. triggered a major promotional action on all international markets in favour of tradition, the culture of industry and the city of Prato. The occasion is ITMA 2015, held this year in Milan.

At our ITMA stand, a reception and information point, we will offer guests and international press (over 300 journalists from all over the world are expected to attend the show) a complimentary copy of the book “The stories of Prato”, written by Pierfrancesco Benucci.

The books are distributed by Prato’s Association of Industrialists, the Cassa di Risparmio di Prato Foundation and six Lions Clubs of Prato which, with the decisive help of Mr. Piero Zucchi, have greatly contributed to the promotion of the city’s image through initiatives held within major international trade shows, such as Première Vision in Paris and ITMA. The book, published in English, consists of a number of imaginary interviews by Francesco di Marco Datini with some of his fellow townsmen, who describe their lives, careers and hard work. Is it, thus, a history book? A journalist from Prato described it as a “love story” addressed to Prato and its people.

L’occasione è arrivata da ITMA 2015, quest’anno organizzata a Milano.

Nel nostro stand di ITMA, punto di accoglienza ed informazione, omaggiamo ospiti e stampa internazionale (sono previsti oltre trecento giornalisti provenienti da tutto il mondo) del libro “The stories of Prato”, scritto da Pierfrancesco Benucci.

I libri sono stati messi a disposizione dall’Unione Industriale Pratese, dalla Fondazione della Cassa di Risparmio di Prato e dai sei Club Lions di Prato che, grazie al lavoro di coordinamento del dottor Piero Zucchi, hanno contribuito in maniera determinante a promuovere l’immagine della città attraverso iniziative realizzate all’interno delle grandi manifestazioni espositive internazionali come Première Vision di Parigi ed adesso ITMA. Il libro, editato in lingua inglese, racconta una serie di interviste fantastiche che Francesco di Marco Datini fa ad alcuni suoi concittadini per farsi raccontare le loro storie, i loro successi, la loro fatica. The 17th ITMA show, the world’s most important trade fair for manufacturers and suppliers of textile-clothing machinery and equipment, revolves around the innovations aimed at promoting the sector’s sustainability. Held every four years since 1951, ITMA showcases the most advanced production solutions and this year it will be attended by 1,600 exhibitors from 46 countries.

ITMA is organized by Cematex, Comité Européen des Constructeurs de Machines Textiles, which gathers the associations of textile machinery producers from nine European countries. The Italian association which has joined Cematex is Acimit.

“The theme chosen for this year’s ITMA, Masters in the art of sustainable production, -explains the president of Cematex Charles Beauduin- is crucial to today’s textile-clothing-fashion industry. The companies which are the most sensitive to current changes view sustainability as a key factor for their production process. We believe that the sector’s companies are willing to support us in our goal of spreading the use of eco-friendly machinery and production processes within the textile-clothing chain”. Sustainable innovations for the textile-clothing-fashion system will be on show throughout the fair’s 19 sectors- ranging from spinning to weaving, from knitwear to finishing treatments to printing, to fibers and yarns. A great number of exhibitors will be showing “green” technological innovations, that is, water and energy efficient machinery, or solutions allowing for greater reduction in emissions and waste, and more sustainable alternatives as compared to the materials currently used in production, such as dyes which do not require the use of water or environmentally friendly chemicals.

“In keeping with this year’s theme, we have planned several conferences encouraging debate and exchange of ideas with experts on themes of great importance for the sector- says Beauduin. Organizzata ogni quattro anni fin dal 1951, ITMA 2015 mette in mostra le soluzioni produttive più innovative, proposte da oltre 1.600 espositori provenienti da 46 paesi.

“Il tema scelto per questa edizione di ITMA, ovvero ‘Maestri nell’arte della produzione sostenibile – spiega il president di Cematex Charles Beauduin - è oggi cruciale per l’industria tessile-abbigliamento-moda. Le aziende più sensibili ai cambiamenti in atto guardano sempre più alla sostenibilità come a un fattore imprescindibile del loro processo produttivo. Siamo convinti che le imprese del nostro settore vorranno condividere il nostro obiettivo di una diffusione sempre maggiore di macchinari e processi produttivi amici dell’ambiente all’interno dell’intera filiera del tessile-abbigliamento”.

Innovazioni sostenibili per il sistema tessile-abbigliamento-moda sono in mostra in tutti i 19 settori dell’esposizione – che spaziano dalla filatura alla tessitura, dalla maglieria alla nobilitazione alla stampa, fino alle fibre e filati. Sono molti gli espositori che presentano innovazioni tecnologiche dalle caratteristiche “verdi”, quali un minor utilizzo di acqua o di energia, oppure soluzioni che permettono una riduzione delle emissioni o dei materiali di scarto. Non mancano neanche alternative più sostenibili rispetto ai materiali utilizzati oggi nei processi di produzione, come tinture che non richiedono l’uso di acqua o prodotti chimici amici dell’ambiente.

dents who have distinguished themselves by contributing to the realization of sustainable solutions for our industry”.

The winners will be announced at the gala dinner, held on the first day of the show. All the sustainable innovations that have made it to the finals in the “industry” category will be introduced by the exhibitors who nominated them for the award. Instead, the students named finalists will illustrate their research work at the Research & Innovation Pavilion’s Speakers Platform during the trade show.

Italy and Milan will be hosting the show again after twenty years, with the opening held two weeks after the closing of the 2015 Expo, thanks to which the city captured the world’s attention. Italian exhibitors are about 460, spreading across an area of 31.450 square meters.

Among the off-fair events worth mentioning are the 2nd World Textile Summit, the Forum of the leading manufacturers of textile dyes and chemicals, the conference on technology for textile technicians of the 2BFUNTEX consortium, the seminar on “responsible cotton” by Better Cotton Initiative, the conference on digital textiles by World Textile Information Network and the Euratex 2015 convention.

I vincitori saranno annunciati nel corso della cena di gala, in programma nel primo giorno di esposizione. Tutte le innovazioni sostenibili finaliste della categoria “industria” saranno presentate dagli stessi espositori che le hanno indicate per il premio. Gli studenti finalisti, invece, illustreranno le loro ricerche dalla Piattaforma dei relatori del Padiglione Ricerca & Innovazione nel corso dei giorni di esposizione.

L’Italia e Milano tornano ad ospitare il salone dopo venti anni, con l’inaugurazione che arriva due settimane dopo Expo, un altro evento che ha fatto della città lombarda il fulcro del mondo. Gli espositori italiani sono circa 460, per una superficie pari a 31.450 metri quadrati.

Tra gli eventi collaterali sono da ricordare il secondo World Textile Summit, il Forum dei leader dei coloranti tessili e dei materiali chimici, la conferenza sulla tecnologia per tessili tecnici del consorzio 2BFUNTEX, il seminario sul “cotone responsabile” della Better Cotton Initiative, la conferenza sul tessile digitale del World Textile Information Network e il congresso annuale di Euratex.

After barely two years since her election as president of Acimit, the Italian Association of Textile Machinery Manufacturers, Raffaella Carabelli has naturally assumed the role of “lady of the house” at the world’s most important textile machinery show, which she will be attending also in her capacity as entrepreneur and Fadis company owner. A degree in business economics at Bocconi University and sales manager of the family-owned company, Ms. Carabelli has completed the first part of her “journey” at the head of an Italian industrial sector which has reached a worldwiderecognized level of excellence. But she still has a long way to go, in terms of protecting the sector’s market share from competitors, and in terms of sustainability, quality and figures, as she herself asserts on the eve of ITMA’s opening.

ITMA represents the best of worldwide production. What are Italy’s most potent “weapons” against competitors, in particular, North-European competitors?

Italian machinery stands out for its quality and reliability. As compared to our traditional competitors, Germany and Switzerland, we offer more flexibility in meeting the customer’s requirements, by providing customized offerings. And what’s more, our company members joining the “Sustainable Technologies” project provide also sustainable offerings: eco-friendly and energy, water and raw material-efficient machinery. Of course, there are manufacturers from other countries who are dealing with the same issues, but I believe, and I’m pretty sure that I cannot be contradicted, that the Italian suppliers of Sustainable Technologies are among the first to be able to provide machinery whose power consumption and energy efficiency have been verified and approved by a third-party certifier, such as RINA. ITMA closes a long-running series of textile-clothing trade shows across the world and the year 2015, which is still open to interpretation from the economic point of view. What kind of year has it been for the textile machinery industry?

A poco più di due anni dalla sua nomina a presidente di Acimit, l’Associazione Costruttori Italiani di Macchinario per l'Industria Tessile, Raffaella Carabelli si trova a fare gli onori di casa per la manifestazione mondiale più importante del settore nel quale lei ha anche un ruolo imprenditoriale con Fadis.

Una laurea in economia aziendale alla Bocconi e direttrice commerciale della ditta di famiglia adesso ha davanti a sé il compimento di una prima parte di ‘tragitto’ dirigenziale come vertice di un settore in cui l’Italia eccelle.

Barra a dritta quindi verso la difesa di quote di mercato appetite da tanti ma anche attenzione alla sostenibilità, alla qualità e ai numeri, come testimoniano le sue parole alla vigilia di ITMA. ITMA rappresenta il meglio della produzione mondiale. Quali sono le 'armi' italiane per superare la concorrenza, soprattutto quella del nord Europa?

Le macchine italiane da sempre si contraddistinguono per qualità e affidabilità. Rispetto ai nostri concorrenti tradizionali, tedeschi e svizzeri, possiamo offrire una maggiore flessibilità nell’approccio alle richieste del cliente proponendo un’offerta su misura. Oggi, poi, le aziende associate che aderiscono al progetto “Sustainable Technologies” propongono un’offerta sostenibile: macchine rispettose dell’ambiente, ma soprattutto attente al risparmio di energia, acqua e materie prime. Su questo tema si stanno spendendo anche i costruttori di altri Paesi, ma ritengo senza tema di smentita che le aziende “Italian supplier of Sustainable Technologies” siano tra le prime a poter certificare attraverso un ente certificatore terzo, quale RINA, il loro impegno: offrire macchine con minori consumi e maggiore efficienza.

ITMA chiude di fatto una lunga serie di appuntamenti fieristici di tutto il tessile-abbigliamento e anche un 2015 ancora da interpretare dal punto di vista economico. Che anno è stato per il meccanotessile? interview 13

L'assemblea dei soci 2015 a Villa Erba di Cernobbio Let’s wait for the end of ITMA to see. I’m sure that the show will give further boost to our companies. In the meantime, if we examine the data we have so far, we can definitely say that 2015 closes on a positive note. The domestic market is recovering, owing also to the government incentives to purchasing of machinery (I’m mostly referring to the new Sabatini). As far as foreign sales are concerned, though we’re waiting for Chinese demand to pick up, I would like to point out that our companies are doing well in many EU markets and South-Asian markets, in particular, Bangladesh.

How much will the Chinese crisis, with the currency devaluation and repercussions on worldwide economy, affect Italy’s textile machinery industry and exports to the Far East?

Apart from the recent crisis, a slowdown in Chinese economy is to be considered normal. In our sector, we have been aware of the slackening in Chinese demand for a few years now. This applies not only to Italian machinery. The delocalization of Chinese textile companies is already taking place and it will be to the advantage of our companies in secondary markets. However, we are still worried about Chinese competition in the textile machinery field, because China is growing in terms of quality as well, owing to the acquisition of Western technology by some local manufacturers.

Are there any new or emerging markets worth exploring beyond the usual European-Asian-African routes?

The above-mentioned areas represent 86% of the sector’s sales across the world. It is nearly impossible to find markets outside of such areas.

However, globalization is a fast-growing trend and allows the sector’s major groups to look for production hubs where labour cost is cheaper, offering us manufacturers new business opportunities. That is why we are all looking at Sub-Saharan Africa as a potentially interesting market. However, I think that our attention will soon turn to other markets.

ITMA shows how and where it is best to invest from the technological point of view. In your opinion, do Italian textile copanies Aspettiamo la conclusione di ITMA per dirlo. Sono sicura che la manifestazione darà un’ulteriore spinta all’attività delle nostre aziende. Nel frattempo se ragioniamo sui dati fin qui in nostro possesso posso dire che il 2015 potrà chiudere in positivo. C’è una ripresa sul mercato interno, anche grazie agli incentivi forniti dal Governo per incentivare l’acquisto di macchinari (mi riferisco soprattutto alla nuova Sabatini). All’estero, in attesa di una ripresa della domanda cinese, mi sembra importante sottolineare il riscontro positivo osservato dalle aziende in molti mercati della UE e da quelli del subcontinente indiano, Bangladesh in primis.

La crisi cinese con la svalutazione della moneta e le ripercussioni sull'economia mondiale quanto potrà pesare sul settore e sulle esportazioni in tutto l'Oriente?

A prescindere dalla recente crisi un rallentamento economico in Cina è fisiologico. Nel nostro settore il minore dinamismo della domanda cinese si è palesato già da qualche anno. Questo vale non solo per le macchine italiane. La delocalizzazione nel tessile cinese è già in atto e ciò porterà vantaggi anche per le nostre aziende in mercati finora secondari. Resta, invece, la preoccupazione per la concorrenza del meccanotessile cinese, che sta crescendo anche in termini di qualità grazie soprattutto all’acquisizione di tecnologia occidentale da parte di alcuni costruttori locali.

Ci sono mercati nuovi o in via di sviluppo interessanti da seguire per uscire dai tracciati consueti Europa-Asia-Africa?

Le aree citate rappresentano una quota dell’86% del commercio mondiale del settore. Quasi impossibile trovare mercati che siano al di fuori di tali zone. Ma è vero che la globalizzazione corre più veloce delle classificazioni geografiche. La ricerca da parte dei grandi gruppi del settore di hub produttivi, dove il costo del lavoro sia minimo, genera nuove opportunità di business anche per noi costruttori. Per questo motivo oggi tutti noi guardiamo all’Africa Subsahariana come ad un mercato potenzialmente interessante. Sono convinta, però, che a breve ci saranno altri mercati ad attirare la nostra attenzione.

tend to make strong investments or spend their resources on simple technical updating? And what about foreign companies?

Companies, whether Italian or foreign, have to invest to meet the needs of their customers. Competition requires the use of increasingly efficient and cost-saving technology. It is usually not enough to make some modifications to the machinery already installed and making strong investments becomes crucial to the company’s success. On the other hand, it is clear that the current economic situation penalizes the pursuit of a rational investment policy.

The role of ACIMIT at ITMA. Figures, strategies, initiatives….

ITMA is back in Milan after twenty years. The companies have responded beyond our expectations. First of all, some figures: 456 Italian exhibitors (+42% as compared to the 2011 show held in Barcelona), an exhibition space covering an area of 31.450 square meters (+56% as compared to 2011). ACIMIT plans to do no less and, thanks to the contribution of MISE and to the operational efforts of ICE- the agency for the promotion and internationalization of Italian businesses abroad-, we have prepared the event to our best ability.

Among the 2015 initiatives are the incoming missions of foreign delegations, which have brought to Italy about 200 people working in the textile field from a dozen countries (including Bangladesh, Iran, Egypt and Pakistan), and the ITMA 2015 Awards, thanks to which about ten students from foreign universities (Ethiopia, India, Russia and Vietnam) will be able to visit the ITMA pavilions and learn about the latest developments by the Italian textile machinery industry. In addition, an intense press communication campaign (including two videos: one on color, the other on innovation), two press conferences, one held in June and the other one scheduled for November 15 including a fashion show and the new institutional ACIMIT video.

ITMA mostra come e dove si può investire dal punto di vista della tecnologia. Dal suo punto di vista vede la propensione delle aziende tessili italiane a forti investimenti o le risorse sono limitate a semplici aggiornamenti tecnici? E le aziende straniere?

Le aziende, italiane o estere, devono sicuramente investire per rispondere alle esigenze dei propri clienti. Il contesto competitivo richiede l’utilizzo di tecnologie sempre più efficienti e cost-saving. Spesso non è sufficiente apportare modifiche alle macchine installate e quindi la necessità di procedere ad investimenti significativi diventa fondamentale. E’ però altrettanto evidente che la congiuntura economica negli ultimi tempi ha penalizzato una razionale politica di investimenti.

Il ruolo di ACIMIT ad Itma. Numeri, strategie, iniziative...

ITMA torna a Milano dopo vent’anni. Le aziende hanno risposto oltre le aspettative. Prima di tutto nei numeri: 456 espositori italiani (+42% rispetto all’edizione 2011 svoltasi a Barcellona), 31.450 metri quadrati di superficie occupata (+56% rispetto al 2011). ACIMIT non ha voluto essere da meno e, grazie al contributo del MISE e allo sforzo operativo di dall’ICE-Agenzia per la promozione all'estero e l'internazionalizzazione delle imprese italiane, abbiamo cercato di preparare l’evento al meglio. Tra le diverse iniziative del 2015 si devono menzionare le incoming mission di delegazioni straniere che hanno portato in Italia quasi 200 operatori tessili provenienti da una decina di Paesi (tra cui Bangladesh, Iran, Egitto e Pakistan) e gli Awards ITMA 2015, grazie ai quali una decina di studenti di università estere (di Etiopia, India, Russia e Vietnam) potranno visitare i padiglioni di ITMA e scoprire le novità proposte dal meccanotessile italiano. A tutto ciò si aggiunge un’intensa campagna di comunicazione stampa (comprensiva di video: uno sul colore e l’altro sull’innovazione), due conferenze stampa, una svoltasi a giugno e l’altra in programma il 15 novembre con sfilata di moda e il nuovo video istituzionale ACIMIT. interview 15

The launch of H2Dry Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia lancia l'H2Dry

A ITMA often comes the future of textiles, thanks to those who find new technological solutions but also thanks to who these solutions can enhance them believing in research and innovation. It's the case of Zegna Baruffa Lane Borgosesia, a company where the past and future go hand in hand as always, with lab technicians constantly strive to maintain the excellence achieved in almost two centuries of production. Re-Active H2Dry and K-Wool H2Dry are examples of this ongoing research in the field of high technology combined with respect for the environment. He tells us about the birth of these two yarns Luciano Bandi, Commercial Director Zegna Barney Lane Borgosesia.

What are the technical characteristics of H2Dry? H2DRY is a manufacturing process developed within Zegna Baruffa that, thanks to the potential of its plants, is able to develop research and apply it to their yarn in a narrow time. H2DRY is a process which permits the yarn to be easy care, to have a natural elasticity, to have a degree of crease resistance higher than the products of the same composition and to have the properties of extract moisture. Opportunity, latter, specifically reserved to products made from man-made fibers. We can safely say that through the procedure H2DRY, applicable to different types of yarn, Zegna Baruffa has managed to concentrate in a single machining process characteristics that are found in a separate way for yarns currently on the market.

To highlight the performance you have chosen the Tor des Geants. So H2Dry adapts to any type of use?

The process H2DRY was especially developed for use as part of a performance clothing "fashion" that is in current use. The features permit to products made with our yarns treated H2DRY and prepared, to be used also for uses in which the performance requirements are high.

Fairs, partnerships with events, continuous enhancement of the brand. Continuing efforts to keep alive the market: there are countries on which bets or more, whereas others find interesting for future development?

The fairs remains an important point in the promotion of our products. We have worked hard to enhance our brand and today we are doing it with greater insistence, since we are now the only spinning company that can make use Made in Italy uncompromising because the production facilities are exclusively in Italy. Customers appreciate this feature because it allows to market products with specific characteristics that put them out of the competitions more aggressive. The selection of a clientele more then their location become an element of choice and investment for our future.

Quali sono le caratteristiche tecniche di H2Dry? H2DRY è un processo di produzione esclusivo messo a punto all’interno di Zegna Baruffa che, grazie alla potenzialità dei propri impianti, è in grado di sviluppare ricerca e applicarla ai propri filati in tempi relativamente stretti. H2DRY è un procedimento che permette al filato di essere totalmente easy care, di avere una particolare elasticità naturale, di avere un grado di ingualcibilità superiori ai prodotti di pari composizione e soprattutto di avere le proprietà di estrarre l’umidità. Opportunità, quest’ultima, riservata specificatamente a prodotti realizzati con fibre man made. Possiamo tranquillamente dire che attraverso il procedimento H2DRY, applicabile a diversi tipi di filato, Zegna Baruffa è riuscita a concentrare in un unico processo di lavorazione caratteristiche che normalmente si trovano in modo separato sui filati attualmente in commercio.

Per evidenziarne le performance avete scelto il Tor des Geants. Quindi H2Dry si adatta a qualsiasi tipo di utilizzo?

Diciamo che il processo H2DRY è stato soprattutto pensato per un utilizzo performante nell’ambito di un abbigliamento “fashion” vale a dire di uso corrente. Le caratteristiche permettono a prodotti realizzati con i filati trattati H2DRY e specificatamente predisposti, ad essere utilizzati anche per usi in cui le necessità di performance sono molto elevate.

Fiere, partnership con eventi, continua valorizzazione del brand. Un impegno costante per mantenere vivi i mercati: ci sono Paesi sui quali puntate maggiormente o altri che invece ritenete interessanti per uno sviluppo futuro?

Ovviamente la partecipazione alle fiere rimane un punto importante nella promozione dei nostri prodotti. Abbiamo molto lavorato per valorizzare il nostro marchio e oggi lo stiamo facendo con maggior insistenza, visto che siamo ormai l’unica filatura che può avvalersi di un Made in Italy senza compromessi in quanto gli impianti di produzione sono solo ed esclusivamente in Italia. I clienti apprezzano questa nostra caratteristica perché permette a loro volta di immettere sul mercato prodotti con caratteristiche specifiche che mettono loro fuori dalle concorrenze più aggressive. Si ritorna a parlare di prodotto, di contenuti, di qualità e oggi più che mai la necessità di uscire dalla “massificazione”. E' componente comune in tutti i Paesi. E’ quindi la selezione di una clientela più che la loro localizzazione a diventare un elemento di scelta e di investimento per il nostro futuro. focus 17

Biella, Como, Prato and Varese, strictly in alphabetical order. These are Italy’s textile districts, this is where the “Made in Italy” is born and from where it travels the world, this is the Italian textile machinery industry’s primary market and where all the major textile machinery manufacturers are located. Four industrial districts based on research, innovation and technological development.

So, it seems only natural to us to turn to the Associations of Industrialists of these districts to learn more about the situation of the Italian textile machinery industry on the eve of ITMA’s opening. We asked the same six questions - nearly the same we asked the president of Acimit Raffaella Carabelli -, to Francesca Bozzo, leader of Mechanic Industry Group the Unione degli Industriali of Biella, to Claudio Taiana, president of Gruppo Filiera Tessile of Unindustria Como, to Francesca Fani, president of the Unione Industriale of Prato textile machinery section and to Tiziano Barea, vice president Unione degli Industriali of Varese. Here are their answers.

ITMA represents the best of worldwide production. What are Italy’s “weapons” against competitors, in particular, North-European competitors?

Taiana - The best strategy against competition is based on performances and innovation of processing stages, which translates into treating innovative fibers and fabrics more efficiently. In the finishing field, there are two decisive factors: flexibility in order to improve services, and energy conservation to reduce production costs, followed by pre and post-sales support and service.

Fani - When referring to North-European competitors, we are talking about Germany which, however, means facing increased Biella, Como, Prato e Varese, in rigoroso ordine alfabetico. E’ qui che si concentra la produzione tessile italiana, è in questi distretti che nasce il made in Italy che poi fa il giro del mondo, è qui che il mercato interno del meccanotessile ha il suo sfogo primario, ma anche le principali aziende produttrici di macchinari.

Un ampio quadrilatero all’interno del quale ricerca, innovazione e sviluppo tecnologico sono imprescindibili; normale quindi che all’interno delle varie unioni industriali ci sia un referente pronto a guidarci nel meccanotessile italiano alla vigilia di Itma.

Abbiamo rivolto le stesse sei domande, quasi tutte uguali a quelle rivolte alla presidente di Acimit Raffaella Carabelli, a Francesca Bozzo, a capo del Gruppo Industria Meccanica dell'Unione Industriale Biellese, Claudio Taiana, presidente del Gruppo Filiera Tessile di Unindustria Como, Francesca Fani, presidente della sezione Meccanotessile dell’Unione Industriale Pratese e Tiziano Barea, vicepresidente dell’Unione degli Industriali di Varese. Ecco le loro risposte.

ITMA rappresenta il meglio della produzione mondiale. Quali sono le ‘armi’ italiane per superare la concorrenza, soprattutto quella del nord Europa?

Taiana - I grandi temi della concorrenza si giocano innanzitutto sulle prestazioni e sull’innovazione di processo, che si traducono nella possibilità di trattare con sempre maggiore efficacia fibre e tessuti con caratteristiche innovative. Per restare nell'ambito della nobilitazione sono decisivi due fattori, la flessibilità per migliorare il servizio ed il risparmio energetico per contenere i costi di produzione. A seguire affidabilità e servizio pre e post vendita.

Fani - Quando si parla di concorrenza del Nord Europa si parla di Germania, che però sempre più è diventata concorrenza dalla Cina, poiché alcuni nomi importanti del meccanotessile tedesco sono stati acquistati da gruppi cinesi. Naturalmente come sistema Paese, sia parlando di Germania e ancor più parlando di Cina, le nostre aziende sono fortemente penalizzate. Abbiamo un handicap di partenza importante al quale le nostre imprese reagiscono con alcuni fattori competitivi che si sono dimostrati fondamentali per resistere: la flessibilità, intesa sia in termini di progetto che organizzativa, la velocità di reazione viste le ridotte 18 interview

competition from China, as some of Germany’s major textile machinery companies have been taken over by Chinese groups. Of course, whether it’s Germany or China, our companies are greatly penalized. Italian companies are disadvantaged from the start, but they can also count on some competitive advantages, which give them an edge over their rivals: flexibility, in terms of both planning and organization; reaction speed, as they are smaller-sized than their competitors; dynamism and presence in various markets and, last but not least, the great passion, experience, dedication and entrepreneurial spirit that drive our companies to excel.

Barea - Innovation, quality, flexibility and production diversification: these are the best weapons the Italian textile machinery industry has. To use a play on words, we might say that we are the tailors of world mechanics. Our companies are much more able to adapt to customers’ requirements, by creating custom-made machinery, than other kinds of industry. We have production plants that look more like laboratories than factories. This give us an edge over our rivals, hardly repeatable and reproducible by other systems.

This skill of ours is acknowledged all over world, in all markets.

Bozzo - The best weapon we have is the determination of single entrepreneurs and of the people they work with who, unfortunately, are disadvantaged from the start because of, first of all, bureaucratic obstacles, tax burden, high management costs and increasing narrow margins of profit. We have no choice but to pursue innovation to maintain our position in international markets.

However, in order to keep prices competitive, it is crucial to make investments in research more accessible for Italian companies and make customers see them as an added value. dimensioni rispetto a tali competitor, la dinamicità e presenza sui vari mercati e non ultima la grande passione, esperienza, voglia di fare e di intraprendere che anima le nostre imprese.

Barea - Innovazione, qualità, flessibilità e diversificazione produttiva: sono queste le migliori armi che l’industria italiana del nostro comparto è in grado di mettere in campo. Con un gioco di parole, spesso usato, siamo i sarti della meccanica mondiale. Le nostre imprese, più di altre, sanno adattarsi alle richieste dei singoli clienti, creando macchine tagliate su misura delle varie necessità. Abbiamo stabilimenti che somigliano più a dei laboratori che a dei classici spazi produttivi legati all’immaginario collettivo della fabbrica. Tutto questo ci dà un’arma in più, difficilmente imitabile e replicabile da altri sistemi. Una capacità che ci viene riconosciuta in tutto il mondo, su tutti i mercati.

Bozzo - Le armi migliori che abbiamo a disposizione sono la determinazione e la grinta dei singoli imprenditori e dei loro collaboratori che, purtroppo, si trovano ad affrontare i competitor internazionali con forti handicap determinati, in primis, dalla complessità burocratica,dal peso del fisco, dagli alti costi della gestione e dai margini sempre più risicati. La strada dell'innovazione è una 'via obbligata' per continuare a presidiare i mercati internazionali ma, per poter mantenere anche un prezzo competitivo, è fondamentale che gli investimenti in ricerca diventino meno onerosi per le imprese italiane e soprattutto che vengano recepiti come valore aggiunto dai clienti.

Il salone arriva dopo Expo. Pensate che l’Esposizione Universale abbia portato benefici diretti o indiretti anche a settori diversi da quelli dell’alimentazione?

Taiana - Per il nostro territorio, che è così vicino al polo espositivo di Rho, si può dire a sensazione che i riscontri ci sono stati per il settore turistico e, sotto il interview 19

ITMA follows immediately after the Expo. In your opinion, has the Universal Exposition brought direct or indirect benefits to sectors other than the food industry?

Taiana - As far as our area is concerned, being very close to the Rho exhibition center, we have benefited from increased tourism and visibility, owing to the promotion of the Como Lake area. But I’m afraid there have been no major and tangible benefits for our industry. As for the great names of fashion design, we’ll have to wait for their statements. Anyway, 75% of our products are sold abroad.

Fani - The 2015 Expo was a great event, which helped restore our country’s international credibility. This is a blessing for everyone.

Barea - Yes, I believe so, in particular, in terms of image and opportunity to establish new international relationships and strengthen the most strategic ones. Lately, Varese’s Association of Industrialists has been meeting with foreigners working in the most varied sectors, not only in the food and beverage industry. For instance, the Belgian delegation that visited SmartUp, our digital manufacturing laboratory created within LIUC –Cattaneo University. And the Chinese delegation from the local government of Pudong, which was looking for a partner in Italy for the promotion of the creation in Shanghai, in the area where the 2010 Expo was held, of a free-trade zone. Not to mention the many meetings we’ve had in the past few weeks with European colleagues from local industrial confederations, such as the French of Medef de l'Est Parisie and Rhône-Alpes and the Germans of Hannover. All opportunities we’ve had thanks to the Universal Exposition being held just a few kilometers from our area.

Bozzo - Italy’s Expo has been very successful, mostly in terms of promotion. The chance to have millions of tourists visit the Universal Exposition and Italy has definitely increased all manufacturing sectors’ business opportunities, not only those of the food &beverage industry. The country’s renewed dynamism has greatly improved our prospects for the upcoming months, contributing to the economy’s recovery from recession. But the Expo won’t last forever, and we will have to go on dealing with Europe’s “zero” inflation.

ITMA closes a long-running series of textile-clothing trade shows across the world and the year 2015, which is still open to interpretation from the economic point of view. What kind of year has it been for your district and, in particular, for the textile machinery industry?

Taiana - For the Como textile district, 2015 has been a more difficult year than 2014. The Russian market collapsed and other markets are impacted by political uncertainty. Consumer confidence is hit by the complexity of the context in which we operate. As far as the textile machinery industry is concerned, the data we have so far show signs of recovery. ITMA will help us understand more about our prospects for the near future.

Fani - The textile machinery industry is enjoying a positive period, especially if compared to the past two-three years. But I have to be careful about what I say, because our goal is business continuity, which we have not seen much of in the past five years. The same applies to the Prato district, although there are some distinctions related to specific sectors and productions.

Barea - udging by the production levels and exports trend, there is no doubt that the local textile machinery companies, as well as the mechanics sector in general, have enjoyed a recovery as compared to 2014. However, in comparison with the years of the pre-crisis period, it is clear that we still have a long way to go to fully recover from the crisis. Government incentives are definitely not enough to overcome all difficulties. It’s not all bad, but times are still tough.

Bozzo - Unfortunately, the trade show is held too far into the season and requires very high costs for the setting up of the stand and installation of the machinery on show. So, it weighs negatively on the sector’s already negative profits for the year 2015, which are way below expectations, with a few exceptions. However, the reversal of the negative trend is an objective datum, although we cannot be too enthusiastic about it, as we are still profilo della visibilità, per la promozione del “Como Lake”. Non mi sembra di cogliere grossi benefici tangibili per la nostra filiera. Per quanto riguarda le griffes, aspettiamo di vedere i loro resoconti. Ma i nostri prodotti, per il 75% sono collocati sui mercati esteri.

Fani - Expo è stata una grande manifestazione che ha fatto bene al nostro paese in termine di credibilità internazionale. Questo è un bene per tutti.

Barea - Credo di sì, soprattutto da un punto di vista dell’immagine e delle opportunità di stringere nuovi rapporti internazionali e di rinsaldare quelli più strategici. Come Unione Industriali di Varese, in particolare nell’ultimo periodo, abbiamo avuto numerosi incontri con operatori esteri dei più diversi comparti, non solo quelli dell’alimentare o delle bevande. Penso alla delegazione belga che ha visitato SmartUp, il nostro laboratorio di fabbricazione digitale creato all’interno della LIUC – Università Cattaneo. Penso all’incontro con la delegazione cinese del Governo locale di Pudong per fare della nostra Unione Industriali un partner in Italia per la promozione della creazione a Shanghai, nella zona dove si tenne l’Expo del 2010, di una free trade zone. Senza contare il confronto che in queste settimane abbiamo avuto con i colleghi delle confindustrie locali francesi del Medef de l'Est Parisie e di Rhône-Alpes e quella tedesca di Hannover. Tutte occasioni create grazie alla facilitazione di avere avuto a pochi chilometri un evento come quello dell’Esposizione Universale.

Bozzo - Il successo dell'Expo è stata una scommessa che il Paese ha vinto, soprattutto in termini di promozione. L'opportunità di avere qui milioni di visitatori stranieri che hanno visitato l'esposizione universale e l'Italia ha indubbiamente aumentato le occasioni di incontro e di business non solo per le imprese del settore del food &beverage ma anche per tutti i comparti manifatturieri. Questa rinnovata vivacità ha certamente migliorato le prospettive attuali e per i prossimi mesi, assecondando l'inversione di tendenza della congiuntura economica verso la risalita, ma l'Expo non dura per sempre, quindi torneremo a dover fare i conti con una inflazione "zero" quale è quella europea.

ITMA chiude di fatto una lunga serie di appuntamenti fieristici di tutto il tessile-abbigliamento e anche un 2015 ancora da interpretare dal punto di vista economico. Che anno è stato per il suo distretto e per il meccanotessile in particolare?

Taiana - Per il distretto tessile comasco il 2015 è stato un anno più difficile di quello precedente. Il mercato russo è crollato ed altri mercati sono condizionati dalle incertezze di tipo politico, la complessità del contesto in cui operiamo ha provocato incertezza nella clientela. Per il meccanotessile i dati disponibili evidenziano la continuazione di un buon rilancio. L’appuntamento di ITMA sarà utile per capire meglio le prospettive.

Fani - Il meccanotessile sta vivendo un periodo positivo, soprattutto se paragonato ai 2-3 anni precedenti. Lo dico con grande prudenza poiché l’obiettivo a cui tendere è la continuità sui mercati, che invece è mancata nell’ultimo quinquennio. Questo sentiment può essere esteso con moderazione anche al distretto pratese, per il quale valgono però i necessari distinguo legati ai vari settori ed alle specificità produttive.

Barea - Se dobbiamo stare ai livelli produttivi e all’andamento dell’export è indubbio che le imprese del territorio del mio comparto in particolare, così come di tutta la meccanica più in generale abbiano assistito a dei miglioramenti rispetto al 2014. È però tutta questione di dove poniamo l’asticella temporale del termine di confronto, perché se la spostiamo agli anni pre-crisi, beh allora le devo dire che abbiamo ancora tanto da lavorare e ancora tanto da recuperare. Non sono gli incrementi dello zero virgola a doverci far festeggiare. Il momento è positivo, ma ancora duro.

Bozzo - Purtroppo, una data così tardiva per una fiera così importante, che impone costi elevatissimi per stand e predisposizione del macchinario da esporre, per il nostro settore é stata credo determinante per un bilancio dell'anno in corso che non può che essere inferiore alle attese, a parte qualche eccezione. L'inversione della tendenza negativa, però é un dato oggettivo anche se non può essere considerata con troppo entusiasmo perché in realtà stiamo ancora risalendo la china, senza aver recuperato il terreno perso in passato. Va anche ricordato che il comparto meccanico è composto di una miriade di aziende molto diverse fra loro, con andamenti e prospettive altrettanto variegati. A livello locale il settore meccanico sta ancora soffrendo. Sono stati fatti alcuni passi nella direzione giusta: qualche speranza arriva anche dal bonus ammortamento del 140% contenuto nella legge di Stabilità, un segnale importante che speriamo possa tradursi concretamente in nuovi investimenti.

recovering from the crisis and have not made up for lost ground yet. We must also consider that the textile machinery sector consists of a large number of different companies with different trends and prospects. On the local level, the textile machinery sector is still suffering from the crisis.

However, the government is taking some steps in the right direction by adopting measures that we hope will lead to new investments.

How much will the Chinese crisis, with the currency devaluation and repercussions on worldwide economy, affect Italy’s textile machinery industry and exports to the Far East?

Taiana - In the light of the sensible increase in production costs and of the general trend of delocalization of production facilities to less-qualified areas, many Western companies were ready to move towards cheaper countries. Even some of China’s major businesses were planning to shift their production towards South-East Asia, in particular, Vietnam, where labour cost is cheaper. We will soon see what the effects of currency devaluation are.

Fani - Well, there’s a question with a capital “Q”. The aspects and factors of economic policy involved are so complex that they are beyond an entrepreneur’s understanding.

Barea - The slowdown in Chinese economy is one of the factors that prevents us from being happy with the current economic recovery. In the past few years, our sector has been greatly relying on exports to far-away countries to compensate for the drop in domestic consumption, which includes our European partners. And China used to be one of our major markets. It is hard to say what repercussions there might be in the following months. One thing is sure: the 26,1% decrease in exports of textile machinery from Varese to China, registered in the first six-month-period of 2015, as compared to the same period of 2014. This is definitely a warning signal.

Bozzo - The slowdown in Chinese economy, though predictable, has been a major variable for global economy. Although China’s growth is expected to remain around 6%, we have seen a sharp drop in orders. Exports to the Far East are still very important for textile machinery companies’ sales and I believe that this trend should be further developed, while expanding into other markets as well.

La crisi cinese con la svalutazione della moneta e le ripercussioni sull’economia mondiale quanto potrà pesare sule settore e sulle esportazioni in tutto l’Oriente?

Taiana - In considerazione del sensibile aumento dei costi della produzione e della spinta a muovere molte unità produttive verso aree meno qualificate, molti operatori occidentali si stavano preparando ad un rientro delle produzioni più qualificate ed allo spostamento verso paesi meno costosi di quelle meno complesse.

Anche alcuni tra i maggiori operatori cinesi stavano addirittura progettando nuovi insediamenti verso paesi del Sud Est Asiatico caratterizzati da minori costi della manodopera, Vietnam primo tra molti. Capiremo a breve gli effetti della svalutazione.

Fani - Direi che questa è “la domanda” con la D maiuscola. Giocano fattori ed aspetti di politica economica e non solo talmente complessi che sfuggono alla capacità di lettura dell’imprenditore.

Barea - Ecco, proprio il rallentamento dell’economia cinese è uno dei fattori che meno ci permettono di festeggiare del sentiment congiunturale di miglioramento.

Molte delle fortune del nostro comparto, negli ultimi anni, si sono basate proprio sulla capacità di compensare con l’export nei mercati più lontani la brusca frenata registrata nei consumi interni, comprendendo ormai con questo termine anche i partner europei. E proprio la Cina è stato un mercato di riferimento sempre più importante. Oggi è difficile dire quale saranno gli impatti sui prossimi mesi, di certo c’è il crollo del 26,1% dell’export della meccanica varesina in quel Paese, registrato nei primi sei mesi del 2015, rispetto allo stesso periodo del 2014. Tanto basta per far suonare più di un campanello di allarme.

Bozzo - Il rallentamento dell'economia cinese, seppur prevedibile, è stata una variabile importante per l'economia mondiale. Anche se si parla comunque di una crescita che si assesterà per la Cina intorno al 6% , una brusca frenata negli ordinativi si è percepita. L'export inOriente continua a rappresentare un significativo capitolo per il fatturato delle aziende meccaniche e credo che questa tendenza dovrà essere rinforzata ed affiancata, però, dalla scommessa su altri mercati.

Ci sono mercati nuovi o in via di sviluppo interessanti da seguire per uscire dai tracciati consueti Europa-Asia-Africa?

Taiana - Non registriamo, soprattutto per le macchine e per le tecnologie più avanzate, nuove aree caratterizzate da piani di sviluppo particolarmente significativi. Registriamo comunque l'attivazione di significativi piani di adeguamento tecnologico delle più innovative tra le maggiori realtà Europee (Italia e interview 21

Are there any new or emerging markets worth exploring beyond the usual European-Asian-African routes?

Taiana - As far as the most advanced machinery and technologies are concerned, there are no new areas having particularly significant development plans. However, we know that the activation of significant technological upgrading plans is taking place in the most innovative areas in Europe (above all, Italy and Germany) and Asia (Taiwan).

Fani - No, the interesting markets are still the same, as shown by data for exports.

Barea - If we exclude Europe, Asia and Africa, we are left with America. That is why we are very interested in the finalization of the proposed free trade agreement between the European Union and the United States. The TTIP will mark an epoch-making change in terms of both trade flow and investments. The United States is a very important market for Italian products, in particular, products made in Varese, but rules and regulations often constitute an insurmountable obstacle. Reducing or removing trade barriers would greatly help us extend our market penetration.

Bozzo - India will represent a great business opportunity in the next 5/10 years, although initial investments in this country require more time than, for instance, in China. Africa is still a very interesting market, despite the repercussions of China’s slowdown, which greatly affects at least half of the African continent. Another interesting option is the United States: the trend towards reindustrialization and financial support might generate new investments, but America’s expected recovery from recession has not brought any tangible benefits to Italian economy yet.

ITMA shows how and where it is best to invest from the technological point of view. In your opinion, does the district have any margin for strong investments or are resources spent on simple technical upgrading?

Fani - No, i mercati interessanti rimangono gli stessi. I dati sull'export lo confermano.

Barea - Escludendo Europa, Asia e Africa, rimane l’America. E in questo assistiamo con interesse ai tavoli tra Ue e Usa per arrivare al trattato di libero scambio tra questi due giganti economici mondiali. Il TTIP può rappresentare una svolta epocale, sia nel flusso commerciale dei nostri prodotti, sia in quello degli investimenti. Gli States sono sempre stati un mercato molto importante per il made in Italy e il made in Varese in particolare, ma le difficoltà normative hanno rappresentato un ostacolo insormontabile in molti casi, togliere barriere non può che agevolare la nostra capacità di penetrazione.

Bozzo - L'India rappresenta una grande opportunità di sviluppo del business nei prossimi 5/10 anni, anche se una forte criticità nell'affrontare questo potenziale mercato è determinata dalle tempistiche molto dilatate per la realizzazione degli investimenti rispetto, ad esempio, alla Cina. L'Africa continua ad essere un mercato appetibile nonostante l'influenza del rallentamento cinese, che come sappiamo non può non interessare la metà del continente africano.

Un'interessante prospettiva è determinata dagli Usa: la spinta alla reindustrializzazione e le agevolazioni promesse potranno generare nuovi investimenti ma le previsioni di ripresa americana, al momento, non si sono ancora tradotte in un beneficio palpabile per l'economia italiana.

ITMA mostra come e dove si può investire dal punto di vista della tecnologia. Ci sono nel distretto margini per pensare a forti investimenti o le risorse sono limitate a semplici aggiornamenti tecnici?

Taiana - Nel settore della nobilitazione crediamo che non ci sia spazio, come avvenne negli anni '80, per semplici aggiornamenti tecnici. Le macchine dell'ultima generazione hanno caratteristiche tali da non consentire l'adeguamento delle macchine installate: se ne impone, di fatto, la sostituzione. Occorre quindi fare in modo che l'industria locale possa disporre delle risorse necessarie a sostenere gli indispensabili piani di adeguamento tecnologico.

Taiana - We believe that in the finishing field, technical upgrading is not enough, as back in the eighties. The latest-generation machinery’s characteristics do not allow for small improvements to existing machines: they need to be replaced. Therefore, local industries should be provided with the resources needed to support indispensable technological upgrading plans.

Fani - In the textile-machinery field, innovation is usually, with some rare exceptions, incremental innovation. Which means that, though important and expensive for textile machinery companies, it is easily accessible innovation from both the application and economic-financial point of view for the company-client that decides to invest money.

Barea - Today’s challenge is called digital manufacturing. We are not talking about a trick or about doing the same things faster and cheaper. If we really wish to exploit the Internet of Things, we must be able to revolutionize the paradigms of production processes. In the Varese area, we have some very innovative companies, even in the textile machinery field. There are companies that are busy developing technology aimed at encouraging reshoring in the Italian and European textile industry. These state-of-the-art businesses should be the driving force behind local industry, by sharing experiences and best practice. That is one of the reasons why we created the SmartUp digital manufacturing laboratory within LIUC –Cattaneo University.

Bozzo - Considering the very complex and delicate international scenarios we are faced with today, it is difficult to make forecasts, but there is no doubt that the trade show is going to be a great opportunity in terms of innovation and technology, which we cannot absolutely miss. This year’s trade show will be revolving around research on cost-efficient and low-environmental impact technologies. It is a very important goal to be achieved, in terms of environmental sustainability and wellbeing, but also as a weapon against our increasingly aggressive competitors. The gap between Italian and foreign companies in terms of product quality and solutions provided is growing thinner and thinner. So, what really makes the difference is the government’s ability at supporting, or at least at not interfering with the companies’ international ambitions.

Fani - L’innovazione che viene proposta dal meccanotessile è solitamente, tranne rare eccezioni, innovazione incrementale.

Questo significa che, sebbene importante ed impegnativa per noi imprese meccanotessili, si tratta di una innovazione accessibile sia dal punto di vista dell’applicazione sia dal punto di vista della fattibilità economico-finanziaria per l’azienda-cliente che decide di investire.

Barea - La sfida oggi si chiama fabbricazione digitale. Non parliamo di un semplice accorgimento, o di fare le stesse cose di prima in maniera più veloce e a prezzi più bassi. Se vogliamo sfruttare appieno l’Internet of Things dobbiamo saper essere in grado di dar vita ad una rivoluzione dei paradigmi stessi della produzione.

In provincia di Varese ci sono già realtà molto avanti su questo fronte, anche nel meccanotessile. Ci sono aziende del Varesotto che stanno addirittura sviluppando tecnologie in grado di favorire il reshoring in Italia e in Europa dell’industria tessile. Punte avanzate che dobbiamo riuscire ad utilizzare per fare da traino a tutta l’industria locale, mettendo a fattor comune esperienze e best practice, anche per questo abbiamo creato all’interno della LIUC – Università Cattaneo il laboratorio di fabbricazione digitale, SmartUp. Bozzo - Per come evolvono gli attuali complessi e delicati scenari internazionali è difficile fare previsioni, ma sicuramente il salone internazionale sarà una grande opportunità che dobbiamo sfruttare con tutte le nostre forze come una sfida di innovazione e tecnologia.

Sarà una fiera in cui si metterà al centro la ricerca di nuove tecnologie che impattino meno sia sui costi che sulle risorse utilizzate dal punto di vista ambientale ed economico. E' un obiettivo importante da raggiungere, non solo in termini di sostenibilità ambientale e benessere, ma anche rispetto ad una concorrenza internazionale sempre più agguerrita. Si sta assottigliando il gap fra le aziende italiane e quelle straniere in termini di qualità di prodotti e soluzioni presentate quindi a fare la differenza è sempre di più l'incidenza di un Sistema Paese capace di supportare, o almeno non ostacolare, il fare impresa a livello internazionale. interview 23

We talk with Giancarlo Girani.

What are some of the Girani collection’s strengths for the upcoming seasons?

One of the key characteristics of our approach has always been to offer original, signature designs and colour combinations every season.

Clients appreciate this, and they seek out our assistance in resolving any issues of appearance. Clearly, every designer’s studio has its own specific requirements, but we try to involve ourselves in our designs as much as possible. And we can attest to this. We believe cooperation among workers is a winning strategy.

2015 is a year in which institutions and the production world are closer than ever. What do you think of the government’s commitment to boosting Made in Italy by promoting fairs and investing in internationalisation?

We recognise the profuse effort made in various directions, generally, at least with regard to stated intentions. When it comes to the problems of our industry, we are of the opinion that one can always strive for higher goals. Regarding administrative and bureaucratic compliance, we don’t perceive any improvement whatsoever; on the contrary, trade and industry taxation seems to us heavy and convoluted.

Among your company priorities is respect for the environment and use of renewable forms of energy. How is this priority fulfilled?

We have considered this issue very seriously, as majority members of the governing body of a famous dye-works company in Como. We believe it is extremely important to quickly obtain the best results in the current state of dying technology. Naturally, this means considerable investment, which is a top priority. We do not hide our satisfaction in noting that an important global consultation company, one that handles analysis of our production site, considers our company among the best in the fabric dying market, and has complimented us on our current set-up.

Più di venti anni a contatto con il mondo della moda, una ricerca continua di innovazione, una presenza continua alle principali fiere di settore, non solo europee: Girani è un caposaldo del distretto di Como e ne parliamo con Giancarlo Girani.

Quali sono i punti di forza di Girani per le collezioni delle prossime stagioni?

E’ sempre stata prerogativa del nostro sistema occuparci ogni stagione di proporre evoluzioni di filo, armatura disegni e accostamento colori. I clienti quindi apprezzano la nostra proposta e cercano la nostra collaborazione per risolvere i problemi delle loro presentazioni. Chiaramente ogni ufficio stile ha le proprie specifiche esigenze, ma si integra con le nostre proposte per quanto possibile, e questo è ciò che constatiamo. Riteniamo la collaborazione fra tutti gli operatori una strategia vincente.

Il 2015 è l'anno in cui istituzioni e mondo produttivo sono più vicine di sempre. L'impegno del governo per rilanciare il made in Italy con la promozione delle fiere e gli investimenti nell'internazionalizzazione la convincono?

Ci rendiamo conto dello sforzo profuso in varie direzioni a carattere generale. Perlomeno della dichiarazione di intenti. Arrivando ai problemi del nostro comparto, opiniamo che si potrebbe aspirare a obbiettivi superiori. Per la questione degli adempimenti amministrativi e burocratici non rileviamo miglioramenti di sorta e, al contrario, la fiscalizzazione a cui commercio e industria si devono sottoporre ci sembra vieppiu´ contorta e appesantita.

Avete tra le priorità aziendali il rispetto dell'ambiente e l'utilizzo di energie rinnovabili. in che modo rispettate questa priorità?

Abbiamo affrontato molto seriamente questo problema, essendo partecipi in maggioranza del consiglio di amministrazione di una famosa tintoria comasca.

Riteniamo importantissimo pervenire al più presto ai migliori risultati ottenibili allo stato di fatto dell´attuale tecnologia di tintura. Si tratta, è naturale, di investimenti cospicui, ai quali stiamo dando priorità assoluta. Non nascondiamo la nostra soddisfazione nel constatare che un´importante azienda di consulenza mondiale, che si è occupata dell´analisi della nostra struttura produttiva, stima la nostra azienda fra le migliori del mercato tintoriale esaminate, e si complimenta con noi dell´attuale stato di fatto . focus 25

Innovation Cambi Luigi, tra innovazione e ricerca and research A micro textile-chain on company premises, a laboratory for research and innovation and ITMA as a source of new ideas and insights into the future of the textile industry. At Cambi Luigi, a well-known textile company from Prato, ongoing research is the rule. This year’s ITMA show will be attended by the company’s mechanic, electrician and production manager and, of course, by the owner Iacopo Scuccimarra, with his wife and sister-in-law, Sara and Silvia, the daughters of Andrea Cambi, who passed away before his time six years ago. “We are eager to see the latest innovations in terms of production and sustainability”.

Cambi Luigi was, in fact, one of the district’s first companies to embrace the cause of sustainability: “We have installed a toxic fume treatment system- says Scuccimarra- and a one-megawatt photovoltaic system on the company’s buildings and on the buildings of our affiliated companies”.

And for many years now, the company has been providing for the separate collection of waste: fluff, fabric, cardboard, plastic, iron and wood.

Then they have a laboratory on company premises, where research work is carried out: “Especially on dyeing products and chemicals- goes on the company owner- and on whatever else contributes to environmental protection and improves product quality”.

ITMA is a source of new ideas for the updating of the company’s machinery: “Times are tough- says the Pratese entrepreneur- but the district will be able to stick together once the crisis is over. We are already increasingly collaborating with wool and dyeing mills, which is a very good sign.

Una micro filiera interna, un laboratorio per fare ricerca e innovazione e ITMA come via rapida per trovare spunti e conoscere il futuro del tessile. Alla Cambi Luigi, storica azienda pratese, la ricerca non si ferma mai a questa edizione di ITMA saranno presenti il meccanico, l’elettricista e il direttore di produzione, come conferma Iacopo Scuccimarra, titolare dell’azienda con la moglie e la cognata, Sara e Silvia (nella foto in alto), figlie di Andrea Cambi, prematuramente scomparso sei anni fa: “Siamo curiosi di vedere cosa c’è di innovativo sia per la produzione che per la sostenibilità”.

La Cambi Luigi infatti è una delle aziende che per prime ha sposato la causa della sostenibilità: “Ci siamo dotati di sistemi per l’abbattimento dei fumi nell’atmosfera – continua Scuccimarra – e abbiamo anche un impianto fotovoltaico da quasi un mega su immobili di proprietà o di società collegate”. In più da anni, in anticipo sui tempi, è stata avviata la raccolta differenziata degli scarti: peluria, stoffa, cartoni, plastica, ferro e legno. Poi c’è il laboratorio interno, dove fare ricerca: “Sui prodotti, soprattutto di tintoria e sui chimici – continua il titolare dell’azienda – e su tutto quello che in generale ci può far ridurre l’impatto ambientale e migliorare la qualità del lavoro”.

ITMA è una fucina di idee per il rinnovamento del parco macchine: “Il momento non è ancora dei più felici – conclude l’imprenditore pratese – ma il distretto saprà restare unito una volta passata definitivamente la tempesta. Già adesso collaboriamo sempre di più con i lanifici ed anche con le tintorie e questo è un segnale positivo”. focus 27

The textile mechanical sector is sharpening its profile: maybe it is the Italian location for Itma 2015, but this edition of the fair will see many new interesting things. A positive atmosphere accompanied the presentation of the new machinery, reflected by the optimism of the producers related to the actual trend of the sector. A sector that seems to have overcome the difficulties of the previous years, ready to look with confidence at the positive trend of the textile sector.

We have talked about this with Andrea Piattelli, President of the Unitech Textile Machinery, a company that produces textile finishing machines, located in Montemurlo (Prato) and owned by the Piattelli, Denti and Barni families, and with Alice Tonello, Marketing and R&D Manager of Tonello.

We start with Piattelli What is the situation in the Italian textile-mechanical sector?

I generally think that Italian textile-mechanical sector has managed to develop, at least in part, the countermeasures rendered necessary by the great changes affecting the global market. That makes me talk of a rather positive trend of the sector. And, as far as our company is concerned, I would say we are following this positive trend.

Is there something new you are going to present at Itma?

Itma, with its four-year frequency, has always been an important event for our company, and since it is going to take place in Italy this year, we have increased our efforts to present a wide selection of the products on our catalogue. More specifically, we will showcase our flat rama machinery,

Il meccanotessile italiano tira a lucido i propri strumenti: sarà per la sede italiana dell’Itma, ma questa edizione del salone metterà in vetrina molte interessanti novità. Uno spirito positivo, quindi, nella presentazione di nuovi macchinari, che corrisponde all’ottimismo dei produttori anche per quel che riguarda l’andamento del settore. Il settore sembra avere superato anni difficili e aspetta con fiducia il buon andamento del tessile.

Ne parliamo con Andrea Piattelli, presidente di Unitech Textile Machinery di Montemurlo (Prato), azienda produttrice di macchine per il finissaggio tessile che fa capo alle famiglie Piattelli, Denti e Barni, e con Alice Tonello, Marketing and R&D Manager di Tonello.

Iniziamo con Piattelli Qual è lo stato di salute del meccanotessile italiano?

In generale trovo che il settore meccanotessile italiano abbia trovato, almeno in parte, le contromisure rese necessarie dalle rilevanti mutazioni del mercato globale. Pertanto mi pare di poter dire che il settore stia attraversando un momento piuttosto positivo. E per quanto riguarda la nostra azienda direi che siamo in linea con questo trend positivo.

Con quali novità vi presentate a Itma?

Come sempre l'Itma, con la sua cadenza quadriennale, rappresenta un appuntamento importante per la nostra azienda e quest'anno essendo in Italia, abbiamo moltiplicato gli sforzi per presentare una vasta gamma dei prodotti in catalogo. In particolare esporremo una rama piana, una garzatrice a doppio tamburo, un banco di spalmatura, una spazzolatrice per tessuti, un forno per digitale. Tutta la gamma prodotti è stata oggetto di evoluzione (alcuni progetti sono stati sviluppati in collaborazione con l'Università di Firenze) in modo da migliorare il rapporto tra qualità, versatilità ed economicità produttiva.

a shearing machine with double crock, a coating head, a brushing machine for textile finishing and a coating machine for digital printing. All the products have undergone further development (some projects have been developed in collaboration with the University of Florence) for a better final ratio between quality, product versatility and productive cheapness.

What are the expectations after so much preparatory work?

We have big expectations in fact, since the fact that the fair will take place in Italy will enable us to show our foreign potential customers the quality of our products, possibly taking them to visit some top-range productioon sites.

As far as foreign custumers are concerned, what are your reference markets and the ones you would like to eventually enter?

There are no reference markets in fact, but a global market that has to be carefully taken into consideration. We actually hope that some important and big markets in terms of volume of trading could evolve and start to consider, beside quantity, also quality and environmental sustainability.

Considering these new parameters could help moving from a 'mere' question of value to more extended evaluation criteria, according to which we can better get by than other producers from developing countries.

What other companies you fear most?

We actually have the maximum respect for all our competitors, that is why we mainly concentrate on what we do to always try to improve our organization and the quality of our products.

Then Alice Tonello.

Le aspettative sono enormi, perchè una fiera in Italia consente anche di mostrare , a tutti i potenziali clienti esteri la qualità dei prodotti realizzati, abbinando visite a siti produttivi in genere di alta gamma.

Parlando di clienti esteri, quali sono i vostri mercati di riferimento e su quali vorreste aprirvi?

Non esistono di fatto mercati di riferimento, esiste un mercato globale che deve essere seguito con la massima attenzione. La speranza è che alcuni mercati importanti e di volume possano avere un'evoluzione rapida e possano cominciare a considerare, oltre all’all'aspetto quantitativo, anche quello qualitativo ed eco-compatabile. La considerazione di questi nuovi parametri potrebbe spostare l'attenzione dalla semplice questione valore ad argomenti di valutazione un po’ più estesi, dove sicuramente, ci possiamo difendere meglio rispetto ai produttori dei paesi emergenti.

Quali concorrenti temete di più?

In verità, in Unitech abbiamo grande rispetto per tutti i nostri competitors ed è questa la ragione per la quale lavoriamo molto su di noi, per cercare costantemente di migliorare la nostra organizzazione ed i nostri prodotti.

Proseguiamo con Alice Tonello.

Con quali novità vi presentate a ITMA e che aspettative avete dalla fiera?

ITMA si intervalla ogni quattro anni ed è la fiera più importante del nostro settore. Non potevamo presentare dei prodotti già visti nel mercato. Abbiamo quindi pensato bene di lanciare delle novità esclusive, molte delle quali già in fase embrionale durante il precedente ITMA del 2011. Tra le novità più importanti abbiamo sicuramente NoStone che lanciamo in collaborazione con Levi Strauss & Co e finalista agli ITMA Sustainable Innovation Awards.

Tonello NoStone What innovations will presented at ITMA and what expectations you have from the fair?

ITMA are alternated every four years and is the most important trade fair in our industry. We could not present the products already seen in the market. We have therefore seen fit to launch the exclusive news, much of which was in its infancy during the previous ITMA 2011. Among the most important innovations we launch NoStone we in collaboration with Levi Strauss & Co. and finalist at the ITMA Sustainable Innovation Awards. In essence, NoStone allows to achieve a stone-wash effect on denim garments without in any way use pumice stone. As you can imagine, this brings significant economic benefits, logistics and environmental. The other important change is instead Water Brush, a fully automated technology to whiten and abrade jeans without using toxic chemicals and pollutants such as permanganate. With Water Brush in fact, the vintage look much sought by the world brand sportswear is made solely and exclusively by spraying water at high pressure. Water which is then recovered, filtered and reused by the robot to the next fabric. As with NoStone, even for Water Brush the environmental benefits and safety of workers are absolutely revolutionary.

From the fair, we expect definitely a growing interest in the sustainable technologies for the treatment. In too many countries around the world are used practices and methods not only from the Stone Age, but also dangerous for workers and the environment.

What are your target markets and what would you like to open up?

Tonello is a company projected into the overseas market with a percentage of revenues derived from exports of 97%. We have not a single reference market because, through a network of agents, we are present in 360 worldwide. The markets certainly more influential for our industry are those of the Far East but also America, Central and South.

What are the demands that will be made by users (environmental sustainability, energy efficiency, ease of use, after-sales...)?

For Tonello is an important factor was the ability to intuit that our customers and potential customers had no need of a provider, but a partner that can support their business, to bring a plus innovative solutions and cutting edge fashion. The demand is increasingly that of sustainable technologies that save water, chemicals, electricity and resources in general. All these savings translate it into a substantial economic advantage for companies. Our machines on the fabric, however, realize the exact same look "trendy" obtained by traditional methods, often harmful to workers and the environment.

In sostanza, NoStone permette di realizzare un effetto stone-wash su capi in denim senza utilizzare in alcun modo pietra pomice. Come si può ben immaginare, questo porta notevoli vantaggi economici, logistici e ambientali.

L’altra importante novità è invece Water Brush, una tecnologia completamente automatizzata per sbiancare e abradere i jeans senza utilizzare prodotti chimici tossici e inquinanti come il permanganato. Con Water Brush infatti, il look vintage tanto ricercato dai brand del mondo Sportswear viene realizzato solo ed unicamente attraverso la spruzzatura di acqua ad alta pressione. Acqua che viene poi recuperata, filtrata e riutilizzata dal robot per il capo successivo. Così come per NoStone, anche per Water Brush i vantaggi ambientali e di sicurezza dei lavoratori sono assolutamente rivoluzionari. Dalla fiera, ci aspettiamo sicuramente un sempre maggiore interesse alle tecnologie sostenibili per il trattamento in capo. In ancora troppi Paesi del mondo vengono utilizzate delle pratiche e dei metodi non solo da età della pietra, ma anche e soprattutto pericolosi per i lavoratori e l’ambiente.

Quali sono i vostri mercati di riferimento e su quali vorreste aprirvi?

Tonello è una realtà produttiva proiettata verso il mercato estero con una percentuale di fatturato derivato dall’export pari al 97%.

Non abbiamo un singolo mercato di riferimento in quanto, tramite una rete di agenti, siamo presenti a 360° in tutto il mondo. I mercati sicuramente più influenti per il nostro settore sono quelli del Far East ma anche l’America, centro e sud.

Quali sono le richieste che maggiormente vi vengono fatti dagli utilizzatori (sostenibilità ambientale, risparmio energetico, facilità d’uso, servizio post vendita…)?

Un fattore importante per Tonello è stata la capacità di intuire che i nostri clienti e potenziali clienti avevano bisogno non di un fornitore, ma di un partner in grado di supportare il loro business, di portare un plus innovativo e soluzioni moda all’avanguardia. Sicuramente la richiesta è sempre più quella di tecnologie sostenibili e che consentano di risparmiare acqua, prodotti chimici, energia elettrica e risorse in genere. Tutti questi risparmi si traducono infatti in un consistente vantaggio economico per le aziende. Le nostre macchine però realizzino sul capo lo stesso identico look “alla moda” ottenuto con i metodi tradizionali, spesso dannosi per gli operatori e l’ambiente.

Grazia Cerini, general manager of Centrocot, the Textile Cotton and Clothing Center, describes the role played by Centrocot in the Italian textile-clothing world and much more. A center which provides thousands of laboratory tests and certifications every year, oversees projects by both proposing and developing the companies’ ideas, and to train highly skilled technicians. Just during the ITMA fair it's on a two-year course ITS - Foundation Cosmo "higher level technician for innovation in the textile sector with multi-sectoral applications, supported and also wanted by thirty Italian companies who really believe in innovation as a competitive tool.

What does ITMA represent for Centrocot?

It is a showcase- say Cerini and Gabriella Fusi, the technical director - to highlight not only the value of laboratory tests for certification, but also that of education and research as tools for the enterprise. How would you describe the role of Italy in the technical textile field?

The role of our country is much higher than the numbers provided by the official statistics because are not considered as only those companies that are directly or exclusively in the "Technical Textiles" but also those who, working in the clothing industry and its supply chain design, produce and use innovative materials for the sports industry, leisure and fashion. And if we think of the Personal Protective Equipment, Centrocot only issued to companies well 4310 EC certificates of type, demonstrating the vitality and growth of the industry.

Il ruolo del nostro paese è decisamente superiore ai numeri forniti dalle statistiche ufficiali in quanto non vanno considerate solo le aziende che operano direttamente o esclusivamente nel “Tessile Tecnico” ma anche quelle che, operando nel settore dell’abbigliamento e della sua filiera progettano, producono e utilizzano materiali innovativi per il settore sportivo, il tempo libero e la moda. What is this new development about and what advantages does it offer?

We have added a vibration to our new drying machine - precise that this machine is protected by several patents - which leads the shrinking of the knitted fabric to a complete relaxed state and a permanent stable condition, making washing and management of knits easier. In addition, we achieve another very important result: the reduction of residual spirality of knits, which is a flaw that all knitwear manufacturers have to deal with.

How is Biancalani Textile Machinery’s activity carried out?

Research and development, planning, experimentation and testing operations to check the working of the machines are conducted on company premises. Of course, we provide our customers with installation, end-user training and post-sales assistance.

What are you major markets?

Biancalani exports 95% of its production. We have agents working for us in 80 countries across the world. We used to sell a lot on the domestic market, but unfortunately the number of Italian textile companies has decreased significantly in the past years and the still existing ones do not make strong investments, which is a shame. Some European countries are doing better, in particular Portugal and Belgium, as well as Turkey, but we sell mostly in India, China and Far East in general.

What do you provide your customers with?

100% user-friendly machinery, with low energy expenditure and low environmental impact, which is a requirement all our customers ask for, even China, the country that up to a few years ago was a huge pollution-machine.

What do you expect from the trade show?

We have been attending ITMA since 1975 and we expect, as usual, to meet with our customers and satisfy all their needs, because their demand for solutions is the driving force behind our growth.

Dopo molti anni di attività nella produzione di macchinari per la lavorazione dei tessuti, Biancalani consolida la propria posizione nel comparto della maglieria e questa edizione di Itma la vedrà protagonista con una macchina nuova che consente il restringimento e il rilassamento della maglia in continuo, una macchina per l’asciugatura che applica una forza particolare tramite vibrazione. Ne parliamo con Rossano Biancalani, presidente del Cda dell’azienda.

In cosa consiste questa novità e che vantaggi comporta?

Di solito la maglia viene asciugata libera, noi aggiungiamo una vibrazione e riusciamo così ad ottenere un restringimento naturale mai ottenuto finora. Il vantaggio è che una volta costruito il capo con una maglia asciugata con questo processo - preciso che questa macchina è protetta da vari brevetti - il capo stesso non subirà più alcun restringimento, quindi saranno più facili gestione e lavaggi. Quali sono i vostri mercati di riferimento?

La Biancalani esporta il 95% della produzione, abbiamo rappresentanti in 80 paesi al mondo. In passato abbiamo venduto tantissimo in Italia, purtroppo adesso l’industria tessile italiana è molto ridotta e quella ancora attiva non investe in maniera significativa e questo è un peccato. Un po’ meglio vanno i paesi dell’area europea, in primis Turchia, Portogallo e Belgio, ma soprattutto vendiamo in India, Cina, in generale in Estremo Oriente.

Cosa garantite ai vostri clienti?

Macchinari assolutamente user friendly, bassi consumi energetici, basso impatto ambientale, cosa che ci viene richiesta unanimemente, anche dalla Cina, che fino a qualche anno fa era un grande produttore di inquinamento.

Aspettative dalla fiera?

Siamo all’Itma dal 1975 e come sempre ci aspettiamo di incontrare i clienti nei confronti delle cui esigenze garantiamo la massima attenzione perché la loro pretesa di soluzioni è il motore della nostra crescita. focus 35

“Welcome to all, thank you for joining me at this round-table conference. Let’s start with a bit of history, shall we? The trade show or trade fair is a showcase of various products designed to bring them to the attention of potential buyers. In the Middle Ages, trade fairs where held within local festivals and were authorized by the city or royal authorities who usually exempted merchants attending the fair from payment of duties and taxes. During the most important trade shows, those having an international impact, social order and safety were ensured, enabling merchants to carry on their business peacefully and profitably. Those having the privilege of taking part in the trade fair were granted a diploma written on parchment, with the seal and coat of arms of the person who had issued it. The diploma included the reasons, location and date on which the trade show was held every year, as well as the duration of the event and tax exemptions.

Merchants played the leading role in trade shows. If we think about the history of Florence, we realize how important and active the members of the Arte di Calimala, the guild of cloth finishers and merchants in foreign cloth, were in the late-12th century, long before I moved to Avignone.

The members of the guild were both merchants and entrepreneurs who imported raw materials, such as English woolens purchased in London or Southampton, or dyers’ materials purchased in the Near East. They were called merchants because they used the materials purchased not only to supply their own businesses, but also to trade and sell them directly to customers across Europe. They were called entrepreneurs because they purchased raw fabrics of the French Flanders and Brabant, brought them to Florence along with the dyeing substances, dyed and finished them, La S.V. illustrissima è invitata a partecipare a “Una tavola rotonda in casa Datini: la storia di ITMA, una fiera meccanotessile che ha scandito le innovazioni tecniche dell’industria del settore”. “Benvenuti a tutti, grazie di avere accettato il mio invito a questa tavola rotonda. Cominciamo con il fare un po’ la storia delle fiere: la fiera è una manifestazione in cui si espongono dei prodotti al fine di poterli vendere. Già nel Medioevo le fiere, che si svolgevano nel corso di feste locali, erano autorizzate dall’autorità municipale o reale che spesso concedeva l’esenzione da dazi e gabelle a favore dei mercanti che vi intervenivano. Soprattutto durante le fiere più importanti, a carattere internazionale, era garantita un buona sicurezza e tranquillità nello svolgimento degli affari. Il privilegio della fiera era concesso o confermato tramite diploma scritto su pergamena e munito di sigillo con lo stemma araldico di chi lo aveva rilasciato. Nel diploma era descritta la motivazione, il luogo e la data in cui si teneva la fiera ogni anno, la durata e le relative esenzioni.

Era il mercante la figura principale di queste fiere. Se pensiamo alla storia di Firenze dobbiamo ricordare che, molti anni prima che io mi trasferissi ad Avignone, erano particolarmente attivi nelle fiere internazionali i membri di una importantissima corporazione: l’Arte di Calimala, nata alla fine del XII secolo.

I soci dell’arte erano ad un tempo mercanti e imprenditori che importavano le materie prime, come la lana inglese acquistata a Londra o a Southampton o le sostanze tintorie che comperavano negli empori del vicino Oriente. Erano mercanti perché facevano quegli acquisti non solo per rifornire le proprie aziende, ma anche per conto di clienti di diverse città europee. Erano imprenditori perché acquistavano panni grezzi delle Fiandre francesi e Brabante, li portavano a Firenze assieme alle sostanze tintorie e provvedevano a tingerli e a rifinirli per poi nuovamente esportarli.

Quando non era possibile raggiungere quelle materie prime e quei semilavorati nei loro luoghi di produzione, si potevano acquistare e vendere nelle celebri fiere di Champagne”.

Over the centuries that followed, as a consequence of economic development, trade shows underwent major changes, but- as pointed out by Francesco Datini- the current ones are more like the regional, national and international trade fairs held in the Western world from the 1800s on.

After World War Two, the trade show evolved into a showcase of scientific and technological developments. The first trade fairs meant as a gathering of businesses within a specific industry were born. Among these is ITMA (Internationale Textil-Maschinen Ausstellung), whose first show opened on Friday, April 20, 1951.

At this point Francesco di Marco Datini gave Giovan Battista Mazzoni leave to speak to tell about the history of ITMA and its international and strategic importance: “When I, Giovan Battista Mazzoni, came back from Paris, where I had completed my studies, and I began building the first textile machines in the Officina di Sant’Anna, I had no idea that this industry would have enjoyed such a significant growth and development. The changes occurred in the textile industry between the two World Wars led to the technological upgrading of textile machinery, which became crucial to conquer international markets.

ITMA was organized by CEMATEX (Comité Européen des Constructeurs de Machines Textiles), a body that was created for the specific purpose of organizing trade fairs. The members came from the textile machinery associations in nine European countries: France, Italy, Belgium, Germany, Austria, Holland, Great Britain, Spain and Sweden.

Con lo sviluppo dell’economia, nei secoli successivi le fiere, fossero commerciali o puramente espositive, subirono processi di aggiornamento; ma – sottolineava Francesco Datini – quelle dei giorni attuali sono più simili alle fiere regionali, nazionali e internazionali che con sempre maggiore continuità venivano organizzate nel mondo occidentale a partire dal 1800.

Subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale la fiera si rivelò sempre più teatro di presentazione di novità scientifiche e tecnologiche.

Cominciarono le manifestazioni di settore, e una delle prime, se non la prima è stata certamente la ITMA (Internationale Textil-Maschinen Ausstellung), che inaugurò la prima edizione venerdì 20 aprile 1951.

A questo punto Francesco di Marco Datini ha dato la parola a Giovan Battista Mazzoni per raccontare la storia della manifestazione e della sua importanza strategica internazionale: «Quando io, Giovan Battista Mazzoni, tornando dai miei studi a Parigi, iniziai a costruire nell’Officina di Sant’Anna le prime macchine tessili, non pensavo certamente che questo segmento di industria avrebbe avuto un così importante sviluppo. Sono stati i mutamenti che sono intercorsi nell’industria tessile nell’arco delle due guerre mondiali a far sì che l’evoluzione tecnologica delle macchine tessili fosse determinante per le tipologie produttive e la conquista dei mercati internazionali.

E siamo arrivati a questo venerdì 20 aprile 1951. In una piccola cittadina del nord della Francia, Lille, ai confini con il Belgio, in una importante area tessile, si tenne la prima mostra settoriale riservata ai produttori di macchine per l’industria tessile.

Era organizzata dal CEMATEX (Comité Européen des Constructeurs de Machines Textiles), un organismo appositamente costituito per l’organizzazione di manifestazioni fieristiche a cui aderiscono le associazioni meccanotessili di nove paesi europei: Francia, Italia, Belgio, Germania, Austria, Olanda, Gran Bretagna, Spagna e Svezia. Si sarebbe tenuta ogni quattro anni, stabilirono gli organizzatori, in sedi diverse, e avrebbero potuto essere presentate solo innovazioni tecniche non proposte o pubblicizzate nei due anni antecedenti alla mostra (questa clausola è stata di recente abolita, n.d.r.). I visited all these ITMA fairs and among my notes I found data that I verified with one of the first secretaries of Cematex, Carlo Mendelowitsch.

In 1999, at ITMA Paris 18,000 tons of machinery were shown! This machinery, if placed on railroad flatcars. would have formed a train of over 2,000 cars. In other words a train with the locomotive in Lucca and the caboose in Prato. The machinery was insured for a value of over 600 billion lire and there was an army of 18,000 specialized experts working on average for four weeks to get it displayed and working.

The promotional aspects were important and essential even, and so the textile machinery consortium of Prato, Texma, organized an event called ITMA Days, five months before the fair started. It was a three-day mini-fair of held in Prato, attended by the most well-known journalists and experts sent by the world’s most important textile magazines: from the Swiss ITS to the British Textile World, from the Turkish Textiltechnik to the Japanese JTH, from the American Textile World USA to the South American Texile Panamericanos to the Italian Selezione Tessile, to name just a few. produttivo tessile voleva essere presente per vedere, conoscere le nuove tecnologie; tutto il mondo meccanotessile presentava le nuove proposte tecnologiche.

Questo macchinario, messo su dei vagoni ferroviari, avrebbe formato un convoglio di oltre 2.000 vagoni, cioè un treno con la locomotiva a Lucca e l’ultimo vagone a Prato! Il valore assicurato è stato di oltre 600 miliardi e ben 18.000 tecnici specializzati hanno lavorato mediamente per quattro settimane per rendere funzionante il macchinario esposto.

Erano importanti, anzi essenziali, gli aspetti promozionali, ed ad esempio il Consorzio dei meccanotessili pratesi, Texma, organizzava, cinque mesi prima dell’inizio dell’ITMA, una manifestazione denominata ITMA days; una kermesse di tre giorni che si teneva a Prato ed alla quale partecipavano i maggiori giornalisti tecnico-specializzati di settore delle più grandi testate giornalistiche del mondo; dalla svizzera ITS all’inglese Textile World, dal turco Textiltechnik al giapponese JTH, dall’americano Textile World Usa al sudamericano Textile Panamericanos all’italiano Selezione Tessile.

The Italian textile machinery industry happens to be particularly successful beyond national borders, where the products by about 300 companies represent the best in the field and whose main competitors are Germany, Japan and Switzerland.

The sector employs 12.000 people, located mostly in Central and Northern Italy, with most of the companies (44%) concentrated in Lombardy (in particular, in Bergamo, Como, Brescia and Upper Milanese area) and the rest distributed throughout the textile districts of Prato and Biella. They are mostly small and medium-sized companies, with only 3% of businesses generating sales exceeding € 50 million.

And yet, in 2014, the sector’s turnover was equal to € 2,323 billion, 1,949 of which originating from sales abroad. These numbers have been slightly but constantly on the downturn in the past five years (the lowest reached in 2011, with production totaling 2 billion and 713 million), and the same can be said for exports (2,172 billion in 2011). Instead, imports enjoyed a 13% increase, having grown as compared to 2012.

In order to know more about how and where Italian companies export to and whom we should look out for during the ITMA show, we checked the charts (formulated by Acimit) and learned that Asia is the continent where most of Italian machinery is sold. If exports amount to 84% of the 2014 turnover, in the first six-month-period of 2015 Asia imported 44% of machinery, Europe 38% (22% in the European Union and 16% extra EU countries); South America 7%, North America 6% and Africa 5%.

Quello dell’industria italiana delle macchine tessili è un mercato che trova la sua consacrazione soprattutto al di fuori dei confini nazionali, dove i prodotti delle circa 300 aziende rappresentano l’eccellenza del settore ed hanno in tedeschi, giapponesi e svizzeri i principali concorrenti.

Un settore che dà lavoro a 12.000 persone, quasi tutte tra centro e nord Italia, con una concentrazione (44%) di aziende in Lombardia (ovvero Bergamo, Como, Brescia e Alto Milanese) ed il resto dislocate nei distretti tessili di Prato e Biella; quasi sempre si tratta di piccole e medie aziende, se è vero che solo il 3% delle Associate ha un fatturato superiore ai 50 milioni di euro.

Eppure il giro d’affari nel 2014 è stato pari a 2,323 miliardi di euro, 1,949 dei quali provenienti dalle vendite realizzate all’estero: cifre in leggera ma continua flessione e che nell’ultimo quinquiennio hanno avuto oscillazioni talvolta importanti (il picco nel 2011 con 2 miliardi e 713 milioni di produzione), anche per quanto riguarda l’export (2,172 miliardi nel 2011). In crescita invece del 13% nell’ultimo anno l’import, risalito anche rispetto al 2012.

Per capire dove e come le aziende italiane esportano e quindi a chi rivolgersi in questi giorni di ITMA bisogna guardare le tabelle (elaborate da Acimit) e scoprire che è l’Asia il continente dove finisce la maggior parte delle macchine a produzione italiana. Se l’export copre l’84% dei fatturati 2014 nel primo semestre del 2015 la sola Asia ha già importato il 44% di macchinari, con tutta l’Europa insieme che arriva al 38% (22% nell’Unione Europea e 16% extra UE); America Latina (7%), Nord America (6%) e Africa (5%) si dividono i resti.

E’ ovviamente, per dimensioni e tipologie di lavori, la Cina il principale mercato del settore. E’ lì che l’export italiano ha totalizzato, nel primo semestre 2015, un valore di 137 milioni di euro (pari al 16% dell’export totale). Turchia, India e Bangladesh sono le altre 42 economy

ITMA 2015 opens at a time when global economy is struggling to find a new balance, though difficult to achieve. China’s economic growth has been slowing for some years and the mid-year crisis has opened up some unexplored scenarios. The sectors making most of their profits in a specific area (textile companies in Russia, for instance) run the risk of a sharp slowdown and need to have some alternatives available just in case, while hoping that the home market recovers too.

ITMA 2015 arriva però in un momento in cui le economie mondiale stanno cercando di assestarsi su un nuovo equilibrio, anche se di difficile raggiungimento: la Cina non è più il colosso fagocitatore di risorse e idee di una volta e la crisi di metà anno ha aperto scenari ancora inesplorati. Come tutti i settori che basano su una precisa area molti dei propri profitti (un po’ come è successo per alcune aziende tessili in Russia) c’è il rischio di un forte rallentamento ed allora è bene pensare per tempo alle alternative, sempre in attesa che il mercato interno riprenda un po’ di vigore.

Nazioni come Turchia e India assicurano comunque una dinamicità ancora elevata, soprattutto per quanto riguarda la prima, una delle realtà più vivaci del tessile mondiale in cui la qualità della produzione di tessuti è ampiamente superiore a quella della produzione di macchinari.

The first 50 years Dell’Orco & Villani: i primi 50 anni

Celebrations for the company’s 50th anniversary come a few months late, but celebrating such an important event for textile machinery producers is worth anyway. Dell’Orco &Villani was started in 1964 and has been attending the ITMA show since 1967. Sergio Dell’Orco, the general manager and the second-generation Dell’Orco at the head of the business following founders Giovanni Dell'Orco and Silvano Villani, fills us in about the company.

What developments will Dell’Orco &Villani be showing in Milan?

In the past few years, we been carrying on research work on nonwovens for medical use. In particular, we have developed a new rag tearing machine (since always one of our key products) which takes care of nonwovens. So we have carved out a niche for ourselves in a very wide field ranging from the automotive to the medical and construction industries, which make use of machines that recycle difficult-to-process waste because of the fibers’ characteristics and the parameters that have to be met even after recycling. Considering the machines we have, we believe this ITMA show is going to be very successful.

So you have given up working for traditional fabric manufactures?

In the past 4/6 years, we have been focusing on the medical industry but, in the seventies, ours was among the first companies to deal with technical fabrics, nonwovens and the automotive industry.

What market is currently the most rewarding?

China, no doubt, where there is increased attention to waste reduction and where it is clear that European industry’s performances are higher than those by Chinese industry. However, our machines are sold all over the world. Exports account for 90% of our production.

Where does production take place?

100% in Prato, from research to production. We have a team of engineers, skilled workers and assemblers who take care of on-site installation and customer assistance. We have over ten-year-long business relationships with them.

In addition to installation, does Dell’Orco&Villani provide also post-sales service?

Yes, although through the Internet and the machinery’s technological upgrading we can now ensure remote assistance. We also provide end-user training and spare part supplies.

Ci sono alcuni mesi di ritardo nei festeggiamenti dell’anniversario di cinquant’anni dalla fondazione, ma ne vale la pena pur di festeggiare in un’occasione così importante per i produttori di macchinari tessili. Dell’Orco e Villani è un’azienda nata nel 1964 e nel 1967 ha partecipato alla sua prima Itma, della quale non ha più mancato un’edizione. E’ il direttore generale Sergio Dell’Orco a raccontarci qualcosa dell’azienda, seconda generazione dopo i fondatori Giovanni Dell'Orco e Silvano Villani.

Con quali novità Dell’Orco & Villani si presentano a Milano?

In questi anni abbiamo proseguito la ricerca in un settore ancora scoperto che è quello dei non tessuti per uso medicale. In particolare presentiamo un nuovo modello di sfilacciatrice (che è da sempre un nostro cavallo di battaglia) che si occupa proprio di questi ‘non tessuti’. Ci siamo ritagliati uno spazio, in un settore vastissimo che va dall’auto al medicale all’edilizia su macchine che recuperano scarti finora di difficile recupero, a causa delle caratteristiche particolari delle fibre e soprattutto dei parametri che devono mantenere anche dopo il recupero. Viste le macchine che presentiamo, potrebbe essere un’ottima edizione di Itma.

Avete dunque abbandonato il settore del tessuto tradizionale?

Negli ultimi 4/6 anni abbiamo concentrato la nostra ricerca sul settore medicale, ma è dagli anni ’70 che, tra i primi, ci siamo dedicati ai tessili tecnici, ai tessuti non tessuti, al settore automotive.

Qual è il mercato che attualmente dà maggiori soddisfazioni?

La Cina, sicuramente, dove è nata una grande attenzione alla riduzione degli scarti e dove ci si è accorti che le performance dell’industria europea sono più alte di quelle dell’industria cinese. Però posso dire che le nostre macchine vanno in tutto il mondo: il 90% della nostra produzione è destinato all’export.

La produzione, invece, dove avviene?

Interamente a Prato, dalla ricerca alla produzione. Abbiamo una squadra fatta di ingegneri, operai specializzati, montatori che vanno in trasferta per l’installazione e l’assistenza: rapporti di lavoro che spesso sono più che decennali.

Oltre all’installazione la Dell’Orco&Villani assicura un servizio post vendita?

Assolutamente sì, anche se oggi con Internet e con l’evoluzione tecnologica dei macchinari talvolta si riesce a garantire un’assistenza in remoto. Oltre a questa c’è la formazione degli utilizzatori e la fornitura di ricambi. focus 45

Meeting in Barcelona Appuntamento a Barcellona 2019 in 2019 di Matteo Grazzini

I twill be again Spain (or Catalonia, if in the meantime it will become independent with the long-awaited referendum by separatists) to host ITMA, which in 2019 will return in Barcelona, to Fira, which already hosts it worthily in 2011.

Cematex, the European Committee of Textile Machinery Manufacturers, has announced that and has chosen the dates: June 20 to 26. Fira de Barcelona won the international bid organised by Cematex after fierce competition from three other short-listed bidders out of an original list of nine venues. When ITMA was last held in Barcelona in 2011, visitorship exceeded 100,000 from 138 countries. 90% of the visitors came from outside of Spain: “We are delighted - explained Charles Beauduin, President of Cematex - to bring ITMA back to Barcelona. The selection process took us two years and our investigations into all the nine potential venues and their services were very detailed. We enjoyed an extremely successful show in Barcelona in 2011 and our exhibitors and visitors were very impressed with the facilities and infrastructure on site”.

“We are delighted and honoured - commented Agustin Cordon, CEO of Fira de Barcelona - to have been selected once more to host the ITMA show, and our team is looking forward to welcoming exhibitors and visitors back to the city. We gained a lot of experience from working on the 2011 show and are confident of achieving another very successful event,”.

And the programming is so advanced that it is even already created a website for the reception administration and hotel reservations.

Cematex, organizzatrice della fiera del meccanotessile, ha dato l’annuncio ufficiale ed ha scelto le date: dal 20 al 26 giugno. Fira de Barcelona ha vinto la gara internazionale organizzata da Cematex battendo una concorrenza di altri tre città preselezionate da un elenco originale di nove nomi. tma 2011 fece segnare più di 100.000 visitatori arrivati da 138 Paesi: il 90% dei visitatori proveniva da fuori della Spagna: “Siamo lieti – ha detto Charles Beauduin, presidente di Cematex –di riportare Itma a Barcellona. Il processo di selezione è durato due anni e le nostre indagini in tutte le nove sedi potenziali ed i loro servizi sono state molto dettagliate. Ci siamo goduti uno spettacolo di grande successo a Barcellona nel 2011 ed i nostri espositori e visitatori sono rimasti molto colpiti dalle strutture e dalle infrastrutture”.

“Siamo felici e onorati – ha detto Agustin Cordon, amministratore delegato di Fira de Barcelona – di essere stati scelti ancora una volta per ospitare Itma e il nostro team è impaziente di accogliere espositori e visitatori. E la programmazione è così avanti che è addirittura già stato creato un sito ufficiale per la gestione della ricettività e della prenotazione degli alberghi.

As we announced in the last issue of Showcase, a time of great technological and digital changes has arrived for us here at laspola.com.

It's online the new version: with the same address, of course, yet with a completely new design, save the logo, which remains unchanged to preserve our history and tradition.

Six years after the website launch and transition from hard copy version to digital, La Spola felt it was time for a makeover, given that six years are quite a lot when it comes to the ever-changing world of technology: over the past years, the settings have changed, social networks have arrived to shake up our routines and communication time frames, technological tools have multiplied, and today the web has reached every corner of the world, at any given moment and in myriad forms. Laspola.com has adapted to the times over recent years by creating its own Facebook, Google+ and Twitter profiles, and now is the moment to give these venues a modern, global look.

Working with Abaco Engineering, who made its staff and technological know-how available to us for a partnership that will continue with additional initiatives, we have created a fully responsive website, one that interacts directly with the social media world, gives more space to images, and allows for posting videos both shared with other sites and produced directly by us, so that interviews, reports from exhibitions, and insights can have their own location, rather than only linked to articles. The site is considerably more user friendly than the former version, also on smartphones, tablets, and cell phones, with a platform adjusted to fit individual devices.

The various sections have also been restructured: for example, by combining “News” and “Current Events” and separating out the “Districts” by province and region, as well as tags to allow tracking of various news topics. All with a simple navigation made possible by the header menu, just under the logo, and a home page that reports both primary topical and weekly news along with the latest published stories, independent of their specific sections.

This leaves the page dedicated to Showcase, where readers can browse and read the current or past issues of the magazine, a work in progress, seeing as the magazine is reaching impressive numbers; we’ve reached issue number 157, actually. The individual items from the special paper edition, on the other hand, will be accessible on the site’s regular pages in various sections, while those same articles in English language can be found in a dedicated section—another of the latest features of our new portal.

Lastly, in the footer area is information about our news room and staff, advertising, journalist contact information, office hours and, perhaps the most important detail, the form to subscribe to our daily newsletter, currently at 4,000 subscribers.

Come avevamo preannunciato nello scorso numero di Showcase anche per noi de laspola.com è arrivato il momento dei grandi cambiamenti dal punto di vista tecnologico e digitale. E' online la nuova versione del sito web: stesso indirizzo, ovviamente, ma veste grafica completamente rinnovata, tranne il logo che rimane immutato per preservare storia e tradizione.

A sei anni di distanza dal lancio del portale web e dal passaggio dalla versione cartacea a quella digitale per La Spola è tempo di cambiare d’abito, anche perché sei anni sono tanti, parlando di tecnologia sempre in mutamento: in questi anni sono cambiati gli scenari, i sociale network sono arrivati a stravolgere abitudini e tempistiche dell’informazione, gli strumenti tecnologici si sono moltiplicati e ormai il web arriva in ogni punto del mondo, in qualsiasi momento e in mille forme. Laspola.com si è adattata già negli ultimi anni, seguendo i tempi, creando i propri profili su Facebook, Google+ e Twitter e adesso è il momento di dare a queste impostazioni un aspetto globale e moderno.

In collaborazione con Abaco Engineering, che ha messo a disposizione il proprio staff e le proprie conoscenze tecniche per una partnership che proseguirà anche con altre iniziative, abbiamo realizzato un portale web completamente responsive, che interagisce direttamente con il mondo dei social, che concede più spazio alle immagini, che consente di pubblicare video sia in condivisione con altri siti che direttamente girati da noi, in modo che le interviste, i reportage dalle fiere e gli approfondimenti possano avere anche una parte non legata solo agli articoli. Il sito sarà molto più fruibile rispetto a quello vecchio anche su smartphone, tablet e telefonini, con una piattaforma che si adatta direttamente al dispositivo usato.

Sono state riordinate anche le varie sezioni, accorpando ad esempio “News” e “Attualità” o separando per provincia e regione i “Distretti”, con le varie notizie rintracciabili seguendo le “tracce” lasciate dai tag. Il tutto navigando con semplicità grazie al menù nella parte alta, proprio sotto il logo, con la home che riporta sia le notizie principali del momento o della settimana ma anche le ultime news inserite, a prescindere dalla sezione a cui appartengono.

Rimane la pagina dedicata allo Showcase, nella quale si troverà lo sfogliatore per leggere l’ultimo o uno qualsiasi dei precedenti numeri, che stiamo tuttora caricando sul sistema, visto che anche questa rivista sta viaggiando su numeri importanti e siamo giunti al numero 157. I singoli articoli dello speciale cartaceo saranno invece leggibili sulle normali pagine del portale nelle varie sezioni, mentre gli stessi articoli nella versione in inglese troveranno spazio in un’apposita sezione, anche questa grande novità del neonato portale.

LGL: eco-friendly LGL: un alimentatore per amico yarn feeders For over thirty years, LGL has been committed to the research, development, production and sales across the world of electronic yarn feeders for weaving and knitting. Since 1982, the year the this Bergamo-based company was founded, LGL has registered about two-hundred patents of international standard. We asked the company’s sole director, Pietro Zenoni, to describe the kind of product made by LGL.The yarn feeder is an auxiliary device which, once installed, catches the yarn and delivers it to the production machine. LGL electronic yarn feeders ensure high speed and excellent performance.

What developments will you introduce at ITMA Milano?

In Milano, we will be showing a completely renewed corporate image: design, colors and brand. In addition, we will introduce our latest developments. In particular, we have installed control sensors, which detect yarn movement and reduce stress on the yarn to a minimum, by monitoring and regulating yarn tension based on the machine’s needs. We are the first in the world to offer electronic yarn feeders capable of controlling and maintaining yarn tension at the desired level.

Where can we see this development?

You can find us at ITMA, Hall 5 Stand G107, in the knitting section, which represents the core of our business. And in the weaving field, the business in which LGL first started off, we introduce some feeders with a new range of electronic brakes that meet the needs of customers operating in all textile fields, from traditional to technical fabrics.

Why should a customer choose such sophisticated yarn feeders?

Today, we can install up to 120 yarn feeders per machine. Dozens of machines in the same production plant: electronic control makes the work easier and faster, management of yarn tension more accurate and constant, and the quality of end-product higher and repeatable. Our yarn feeders interact with the Android system and deliver information to mobile phones allowing us to constantly check the machine’s operational and emergency status.

Does so much technology have a large environmental impact in terms of energy expenditure?

Since 2009, we have been developing yarn feeders ensuring energy efficiency and a 30% reduction in energy expenditure.

What is your next goal?

The creation of increasingly user-friendly and customized products, with more and more attention to sustainable resource management.

Da oltre trent’anni LGL porta avanti un’attività di ricerca e sviluppo su alimentatori di filo elettronici per macchine per tessitura e maglieria, a questa attività segue quella di produzione e commercializzazione in tutto il mondo. Un’attività che dal 1982, anno di fondazione dell’azienda bergamasca, ha portato al deposito di circa duecento brevetti a livello internazionale. Chiediamo all’amministratore unico Pietro Zenoni di illustrarci il prodotto realizzato da LGL. L’alimentatore di filo è un dispositivo ausiliario che, una volta installato, preleva il filo e lo fornisce alla macchina di produzione, gli alimentatori elettronici LGL garantiscono velocità elevate ed ottime performance di lavorazione.

In occasione di Itma Milano, quali novità?

A Milano ci presentiamo con l’intera immagine aziendale rinnovata nel design, nei colori e nel marchio. Oltre a questo, evidentemente, presentiamo novità di prodotti. In particolare abbiamo inserito dei sensori di bordo che segnalano il passaggio del filo e ne diminuiscono lo stress al minimo possibile, grazie alla possibilità di regolazione della tensione in funzione delle esigenze della macchina. Siamo stati i primi al mondo a realizzare alimentatori di filo elettronici in grado di programmare e mantenere costante la tensione del filo desiderata.

Dove è possibile vedere questa novità?

A Itma siamo nella Hall 5 Stand G107, nell’area riservata alla maglieria, che oggi rappresenta la quota maggiore del nostro business. Ma anche per la tessitura, dove LGL ha le sue radici, presentiamo dei nuovi alimentatori con sistemi elettronici di frenatura in grado di soddisfare le specifiche esigenze dei clienti che operano in tutto il settore tessile, da quello tradizionale fino al tecnico.

Qual è il vantaggio di scegliere alimentatori così sofisticati?

Oggi si possono montare fino a 120 alimentatori per macchina, in uno stesso sito produttivo possono funzionare decine di macchine: se il controllo è elettronico, il lavoro è più semplice e veloce, la gestione della tensione è più precisa e costante, la qualità del prodotto finale è più elevata e ripetibile. I nostri alimentatori sono in grado di dialogare con sistema Android e mandare informazioni al telefono cellulare in modo da rendere immediata l’individuazione di eventuali allarmi.

Tanta tecnologia ha un alto impatto sull’ambiente in termini di consumi energetici?

Dal 2009 siamo impegnati nello sviluppo di alimentatori che garantiscono bassi consumi e siamo arrivati ad abbatterli mediamente del 30%.

Qual è la nuova frontiera da raggiungere?
